- Lucas: Luna, welcome back. You ready for another episode? Luna: Always! What are we learning today? Lucas: So I know we've done a few weather episodes before — windy, cloudy, rainy, summer heat. But today I want to focus on something really specific to Hong Kong. Luna: Oh, let me guess... hot and humid? Lucas: Exactly. And there's a special word for that sticky, muggy feel. It's a Cantonese classic. Luna: Oof. I remember my first summer here. Just stepping outside — ugh. Lucas: Right? So today we're going to learn how to say "so hot" and "so humid." Let's start with hot. In Cantonese, "hot" is 熱. Luna: 熱. Lucas: Good. And to say "so hot" or "very hot," we say 好熱. Luna: 好熱. Lucas: Yes. So if you step outside and it's really hot, you can say 好熱. Luna: 好熱. That's pretty straightforward. What about humid? Lucas: Humid is 濕. Luna: 濕. That means wet, right? Lucas: Exactly. So "so humid" is 好濕. Luna: 好濕. So if it's both hot and humid, can I say Lucas: You can, but there's an even better word: 焗. 焗 means muggy, stuffy, like the heat is trapped. Luna: 焗. That sounds perfect for a Hong Kong summer. So 好焗? Lucas: Yes! Let's practice a full sentence. "Today is so hot" — 今日好熱. Lucas: And "Today is so humid" — 今日好濕. Lucas: And if it's both, you can say I can already imagine saying that walking out of the MTR. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a mini dialogue. Imagine I'm your friend and I just came inside. And 好濕! Lucas: Perfect. You can also just say 好焗 for the whole feeling. Luna: 好焗. I like that one. It's efficient. Lucas: Okay, let's review all three phrases. Repeat after me: 好熱. Luna: 好熱. Lucas: 好濕. Luna: 好濕. Lucas: 好焗. Luna: 好焗. Lucas: Now a full sentence: 今日好熱. Luna: 今日好熱. Lucas: 今日好濕. Luna: 今日好濕. Lucas: 今日好焗. Luna: 今日好焗. Lucas: Great. Now if you want to ask someone if they think it's hot, you can say: 今日熱唔熱? But that might be for another episode. Luna: Hold on, let me guess. 今日熱唔熱 means "Is today hot?" Lucas: Yes! You're picking it up. We covered the question pattern before. Luna: So if I want to say "Is it humid today?" Lucas: Exactly. And for muggy: 今日焗唔焗? That's a good one. I can use that a lot. Lucas: Let's do a quick scene. Imagine we're meeting outside. Lucas: Oh, nice! You asked me if I'm hot. I'd say: 好熱. Luna: See, I'm getting the hang of it. Lucas: You really are. So let's practice one more time: repeat after me, 好熱. Luna: 好熱. Lucas: 好濕. Luna: 好濕. Lucas: 好焗. Luna: 好焗. Lucas: And if you want to say "today is so hot and humid," you can combine: 今日又好熱又好濕. Luna: 今日又好熱又好濕. That's a mouthful. I'll stick with 好焗 for now. Lucas: Smart. 好焗 covers it all. Now, before we wrap up, I want to mention something. Luna: Sure, what's up? Lucas: If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Cantonese — like, if today's phrases felt useful — there's a small way you can support the show. Luna: Yeah, it's a coffee thing, right? Lucas: Right. If today was worth a coffee to you, that's the link: buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: And every little bit helps us keep making these episodes ad-free. Lucas: Exactly. No pressure, just if you feel like it. Okay, let's get back to the weather. So imagine you're walking down the street and it's super muggy. What do you say? Luna: 好焗. Lucas: Perfect. And if someone asks you 今日熱唔熱, you can say 好熱. Luna: 好熱. Or I could say 好焗 to be more specific. Lucas: Exactly. Let's do a quick review of all phrases one more time. Lucas: Excellent. Practice these whenever you step outside. Feel the weather and say it in Cantonese. Luna: I will. Thanks, Lucas. This was really helpful. Lucas: You're welcome, Luna. And to everyone listening, practice these till we chat again. See you next time.
