1:41
Speaker 3: Hope you had a chance to enjoy what was a
1:42
Speaker 3: beautiful weekend here in the Canaw Valley. Coming up a
1:45
Speaker 3: little bit later on, Diana Graves will join us. She
1:47
Speaker 3: is with the Republican Party here in Kanawa County and
1:50
Speaker 3: they have a lot to celebrate. Republicans now out number
1:53
Speaker 3: the Democrats for the first time in Canaw County in
1:55
Speaker 3: a long long time. So we're gonna kind of talk
1:58
Speaker 3: about that a little bit with Diana Pla. They've about
2:01
Speaker 3: to open up their headquarters, so we're going to tell
2:02
Speaker 3: you all about that. Some sad news broke over the
2:05
Speaker 3: weekend with the death of Woody Woom Woody Woodroam, of course,
2:09
Speaker 3: the long time fixture with broadcasting to Marshall University well
2:12
Speaker 3: over fifty years and some capacity with the university. Steve
2:16
Speaker 3: Cotton is the voice of the Thundering Herd and he's
2:18
Speaker 3: going to join us to talk about Woody Woodroram and
2:22
Speaker 3: his passing and just what a great guy was. I mean,
2:25
Speaker 3: I was very very good friends with Woody and had
2:27
Speaker 3: done several projects with them in the pass and I hate,
2:30
Speaker 3: really hated to hear about that. So we're going to
2:32
Speaker 3: join be joined by Steve Cotton to talk about that.
2:35
Speaker 3: Plus tomorrow night is the big Debates, Yeah, Trump, Ann Harris,

2:55
Speaker 3: by spending some time talking about the West Virginia Humanities Council.
2:58
Speaker 3: What is it, what do they do, and who's this
3:01
Speaker 3: big time guest speaker that they're bringing to Charleston. Eric
3:04
Speaker 3: Wagner is the executive director of the West Virginia Humanities Council,
3:07
Speaker 3: and he joins us now to par Bars Store studio.
3:09
Speaker 4: Eric, good morning, Welcome to the show.
3:10
Speaker 5: Hey, good morning, Dave. Thanks for having us.
3:12
Speaker 4: So, first of all, tell us exactly what is the
3:14
Speaker 4: Humanities Council.
3:14
Speaker 5: I'm to be glad to tell you we are the
3:16
Speaker 5: official state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
3:19
Speaker 5: That federal agency is our primary partner, and with the
3:22
Speaker 5: help of the National Endowment for the Humanities and some
3:25
Speaker 5: support from the State of West Virginia and our many
3:27
Speaker 5: wonderful members all around the state and beyond, our purposes
3:30
Speaker 5: is to provide public educational programs in the humanities. I'm
3:32
Speaker 5: talking about history, everything from national to regional and local.
3:36
Speaker 5: I'm talking about literature. I'm talking about even down to archaeology,
3:39
Speaker 5: legal studies, language studies, and so forth. I like to
3:41
Speaker 5: think of the humanities as all the things that we
3:44
Speaker 5: do to tell the story of our experience, whether that's
3:46
Speaker 5: a great, big experience as a nation or a world,
3:48
Speaker 5: or it's a very local community experience. Wherever you're telling
3:51
Speaker 5: the story of an experience of people, you're doing the
3:54
Speaker 5: work of the humanities. And that's what we do every
3:55
Speaker 5: day of the year. That's a lot, that's a big umbrella.
4:00
Speaker 5: This this car.
4:00
Speaker 3: You got your business cards the size of poster paper,
4:04
Speaker 3: but they explain what it is that you do.
4:05
Speaker 5: It's well. We use the funding that we receive from
4:07
Speaker 5: the NH in the state and from our members around.
4:09
Speaker 5: Our goal is to put as we're an independent, nonpartisan nonprofits,
4:13
Speaker 5: so we're not affiliated with the state. We are sort
4:15
Speaker 5: of our own entity and our our primary partner, as
4:16
Speaker 5: I said, is the NH. We take the money that
4:19
Speaker 5: we receive through revenue public and private, and we put
4:24
Speaker 5: that money back out into the state of West Virginia
4:26
Speaker 5: in the form of high quality educational programming free of
4:29
Speaker 5: charge to the general public, doesn't matter where you live,
4:31
Speaker 5: doesn't matter where in the state or beyond. If you
4:32
Speaker 5: look at some of our digital programs, we want to
4:35
Speaker 5: deliver that content to West Virginia's wherever they live, into
4:37
Speaker 5: folks all around outside of the state. The shorthand version
4:40
Speaker 5: that I like to use is we bring the world
4:43
Speaker 5: to West Virginia. That is, we bring top quality humanities
4:45
Speaker 5: and educational programs to West Virginia, and we bring West
4:48
Speaker 5: Virginia to the world. We tell West Virginia's true stories,
4:51
Speaker 5: not the stereotypical stories, not the ones people think they know,
4:54
Speaker 5: not the negative stuff. But we talk honestly and specifically
4:57
Speaker 5: about the challenges and all the great and wonderful things
4:59
Speaker 5: that are having. And then here, as anybody who lives
5:01
Speaker 5: here and.
5:01
Speaker 3: Knows, I'm very glad to hear you say that, because
5:04
Speaker 3: so often, Eric, we let other people tell our story
5:07
Speaker 3: for us. And you know this is what well, those
5:10
Speaker 3: that know that West Virginia's state and we're not somewhere
5:12
Speaker 3: near Cono. But but but I mean, we we have
5:16
Speaker 3: let other people for so many years. And I'm not
5:19
Speaker 3: turning this into political I'm just saying it is. It
5:21
Speaker 3: is what it is. It is we let so many
5:24
Speaker 3: people tell the story of West Virginia when by God,
5:26
Speaker 3: we have to be telling our own stories. Yeah, because
5:28
Speaker 3: nobody knows your story like you know.
5:29
Speaker 5: It absolutely and that's you know, increasingly we've been looking
5:32
Speaker 5: for ways to let WES to be the platform through
5:34
Speaker 5: which West Virginians can tell their own stories. One of
5:37
Speaker 5: my favorite ways that we can do that, and it's
5:39
Speaker 5: a really good example of the kind of thing we do,
5:41
Speaker 5: is working with local and county historical societies that you know,
5:44
Speaker 5: who knows better than the people in those communities what
5:47
Speaker 5: that history and what that contemporary culture is all about.
5:50
Speaker 5: So through our grant funding, we try and give support
5:52
Speaker 5: to programs that are going on in those communities. So
5:54
Speaker 5: if you've got a regional museum, or if you've got
5:56
Speaker 5: a county historical society or something like that, you're working
5:59
Speaker 5: on a project right into the council. We have one
6:01
Speaker 5: phone number, get you to everybody in the building. All
6:03
Speaker 5: of our emails are right up there. Talk to us
6:06
Speaker 5: about grand funding. Let us see how we can support
6:08
Speaker 5: some of the things that are going on in these
6:09
Speaker 5: communities to celebrate their history and culture.
6:11
Speaker 3: And let's bring it in a little closer to home again.
6:13
Speaker 3: We're talking with Eric Wagner from the Western Indian Humanities Council.
6:15
Speaker 3: Give us an example of some things that have gone
6:17
Speaker 3: on here in the Canal valley that people can actually
6:19
Speaker 3: look at and say, Okay, that was you guys.
6:21
Speaker 5: One of our most popular programs that it's really easy
6:24
Speaker 5: to do in the valley is History Alive. We have
6:26
Speaker 5: a living history presentation program. We have about a dozen
6:29
Speaker 5: presenters on the roster who can go in. The great
6:32
Speaker 5: thing about this program, Dave, is that you can put
6:33
Speaker 5: it on anywhere you have little floor space. So this
6:36
Speaker 5: gets into the city and the state parks systems, it
6:39
Speaker 5: gets into local schools, and we send presenters in to
6:43
Speaker 5: portray people from history, sometimes West Virginia history, sometimes broader
6:46
Speaker 5: than that, and they'll give about a half an hour
6:48
Speaker 5: presentation in that character, talking about their history and their
6:52
Speaker 5: life's work and so forth. Then there'll be a little
6:54
Speaker 5: Q and a session when we go into school buildings
6:58
Speaker 5: that the kids always love this part. They get to
6:59
Speaker 5: ask the character questions, you know, in character, and then
7:02
Speaker 5: the presenter will step out of character a little bit
7:04
Speaker 5: and talk to the kids about the research they've done
7:06
Speaker 5: for these historical figures. So we've got, as I said,
7:10
Speaker 5: some folks from West Virginia history. In the past, we've
7:12
Speaker 5: had everyone from Gosh Minnie Pearl to Mark Twain to
7:17
Speaker 5: Harriet Tubman like to I mean, big big names from
7:20
Speaker 5: all around, Pierpont, France, Pierpont, some folks from West Virginia history,
7:25
Speaker 5: and some folks from beyond. To really get in there
7:26
Speaker 5: and talk to the kids about the importance of knowing
7:28
Speaker 5: your state and local and cultural history.
7:31
Speaker 3: And I love when things like that are portrayed for
7:33
Speaker 3: the kids in school, because you know, you can read
7:34
Speaker 3: it out of a book, you can read it on
7:36
Speaker 3: a computer screen or whatever. But when they see a
7:38
Speaker 3: character that comes in in the full character and comes
7:42
Speaker 3: to life as you mentioned Harriet Tubman or Mark Twain
7:44
Speaker 3: or something like that, it really, you know, kind of
7:47
Speaker 3: I think it tells the story a little bit better.
7:49
Speaker 5: There's no substitute for being in a room. I mean,
7:50
Speaker 5: that's one thing we found out during the COVID years,
7:53
Speaker 5: as you made when nobody could get together, you know people,
7:56
Speaker 5: it was really in a way heartening. That may not
7:58
Speaker 5: be the right word given to context, but it was
7:59
Speaker 5: hard I think to see that the general public doesn't
8:03
Speaker 5: think of the humanities as a luxury. They think of
8:05
Speaker 5: it as as a necessity. People love going out to
8:07
Speaker 5: cultural programs, They love their local museums, They love their
8:10
Speaker 5: local cultural initiatives in their hometowns, and the excitement with
8:16
Speaker 5: which people have come back together in person and in
8:18
Speaker 5: the room has been really wonderful to see coming out
8:20
Speaker 5: of the set of years that we had recently. Indeed,
8:23
Speaker 5: folks love it.
8:24
Speaker 3: Nine to fifteen Dave Island showing five any line presented

8:29
Speaker 3: number of Windfield for all projects big and small, shop
8:31
Speaker 3: locally visit General Hardware WV dot com and you folks
8:34
Speaker 3: will bring them special guests next month.
8:36
Speaker 5: Is that right? Yes? And this is you talked about
8:38
Speaker 5: some things that are happening in the valley. One of
8:40
Speaker 5: the things that we've done for since the mid eighties.
8:43
Speaker 5: Nineteen eighty five, I believe was the first year we
8:44
Speaker 5: did it was the mccrite Lecturer in the Humanities. That
8:47
Speaker 5: is a Charleston event and we talk about bringing the
8:50
Speaker 5: world to West Virginia. That's the big sort of high
8:52
Speaker 5: profile annual project that we have where we bring in
8:55
Speaker 5: a national or an internationally renowned could be a scholar,
8:58
Speaker 5: could be a filmmaker, could be a writer to talk
9:00
Speaker 5: about their work. Over the years, we've had Joyce Carol Oates.
9:03
Speaker 5: We've had Ken Burns, We've had Henry Lewis Gates. We've
9:06
Speaker 5: had a variety of people from a variety of backgrounds
9:08
Speaker 5: in the humanities. This year, it would be tougher to
9:11
Speaker 5: name a hotter writer in the public mind fiction writer
9:14
Speaker 5: than Perceval Everett. Perceval Everett. If you saw the movie
9:17
Speaker 5: last year, American Fiction, it was out with Jeffrey Wright.
9:20
Speaker 5: He wrote the novel Erasure that that movie was based on.
9:23
Speaker 5: And when that movie won the Best Adapted Screenplay at
9:25
Speaker 5: the Oscars earlier this year, Perceval Everett became as people
9:29
Speaker 5: often say, well, it's an overnight success. Nobody knew about him,
9:32
Speaker 5: and in the next day every this overnight success has
9:34
Speaker 5: been coming for about thirty years, two dozen novels, you know.
9:39
Speaker 5: But he is a really, really wonderful writer. I would
9:42
Speaker 5: say he's worked in a variety of backgrounds, but I
9:44
Speaker 5: would say a lot of what he does is he
9:46
Speaker 5: really sort of plugs in on parts of contemporary life
9:50
Speaker 5: and culture that people think of as kind of strange
9:53
Speaker 5: or absurd or bizarre, or why does it have to
9:55
Speaker 5: be that way? Or why do it? Isn't there a
9:56
Speaker 5: better way? We can do it, you know, and he's
9:58
Speaker 5: writing really a lot about In this new novel of his, James,
10:02
Speaker 5: he takes one of what I think is I mean,
10:04
Speaker 5: one of the really inarguably classic American novels, The Adventures
10:07
Speaker 5: of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, And if you call
10:10
Speaker 5: that story, it's about a young, poor, uneducated white kid
10:14
Speaker 5: in the day years leading up to the Civil War
10:16
Speaker 5: who is on the run with the enslaved man Jim,
10:19
Speaker 5: who's the second major character in that book. And Huck
10:21
Speaker 5: and Jim's relationship is it is a friendship. It is
10:24
Speaker 5: very complicated friendship, as it has to be. There's a
10:26
Speaker 5: big difference in age, there's a difference in race obviously,
10:29
Speaker 5: and so forth. But the two of them together, their
10:31
Speaker 5: flight from so called civilization really puts them both on
10:34
Speaker 5: a path where their lives are changed inexorably. They come
10:38
Speaker 5: to know each other in a way that they could
10:40
Speaker 5: not simply being within the society that they both inhabit.
10:42
Speaker 5: They have to go on the run in order to
10:44
Speaker 5: do that. And this new novel by Perceval Everrett James
10:47
Speaker 5: takes that story and reimagines it from the perspective of Jim,
10:51
Speaker 5: who is a secondary character in the story of Huckleberry Finn.
10:54
Speaker 5: So Jim's story is not a story that huck Finn
10:56
Speaker 5: could tell in the first person because he didn't live it,
10:58
Speaker 5: he didn't experience it. This book is really I read
11:01
Speaker 5: it in a day. The first time I read it,
11:03
Speaker 5: I absolutely could not put it down. It says so
11:06
Speaker 5: much about American history and American culture, and American literature
11:10
Speaker 5: and all the stuff that really deeply involves us in
11:13
Speaker 5: an awareness of our own history and our own culture.
11:15
Speaker 5: It is an absolute knockout book. And we secured him
11:19
Speaker 5: really at the perfect moment. His star is rising, as
11:22
Speaker 5: they say. He's been the subject of profiles in The
11:24
Speaker 5: New york Er, New York Times, book Review, Time's Literary Supplement,
11:27
Speaker 5: just a variety of publications. He's having cultural moment right
11:31
Speaker 5: now that is well deserved, and we're very, very fortunate
11:33
Speaker 5: to have him in Charleston and Armorkright lecture every year
11:36
Speaker 5: takes place right here in the metro valley. That's one
11:38
Speaker 5: of our real hometown programs for sure. And where and
11:41
Speaker 5: when it's going to be the Historic Capital Theater on
11:44
Speaker 5: Summer Street. It is October seventeen, which is a Thursday,
11:47
Speaker 5: doors at seven. The event begins at seven point thirty.
11:50
Speaker 5: That's right in line with art Walk and festivefal are
11:53
Speaker 5: taking place. We're looking for a lot of foot traffic and.
11:56
Speaker 3: One of the reasons we're having you on early as
11:57
Speaker 3: well so people can plan for it. It is free
11:59
Speaker 3: to the public. It is for you, but you may
12:01
Speaker 3: want to go ahead and make plans of being there
12:03
Speaker 3: because it's it's not a huge building, right.
12:05
Speaker 5: It's not a huge it's just just north of four
12:07
Speaker 5: hundred I think building seats and it's a really great venue,
12:09
Speaker 5: beautiful venue from dot Bean inside it, it's really really
12:12
Speaker 5: well put together, and we're yeah, we're expecting a big
12:15
Speaker 5: crowd and just have really been fortunate to get him
12:17
Speaker 5: at a great, great moment in his long career.
12:19
Speaker 3: Do people need to get tickets ahead of time? I mean,
12:21
Speaker 3: I know it's free event, or do they just show
12:23
Speaker 3: up or what?
12:24
Speaker 5: We have never done any kind of reservations. We are
12:26
Speaker 5: looking at the possibility of setting something up formally, but
12:29
Speaker 5: we have not made any decisions yet. The way we
12:31
Speaker 5: have always done it in the past is we put
12:32
Speaker 5: the doors open and anybody wants to come in can
12:34
Speaker 5: come in. We'll see like we love to do it
12:36
Speaker 5: that way. We'll see if we can see if we
12:39
Speaker 5: can keep it on that level for this upcoming event.
12:42
Speaker 3: And it's October the seventeenth, the Capital Theater, doors open
12:44
Speaker 3: at seven, Lecture starts at seven thirty. Where can people
12:47
Speaker 3: learn more about it? Websites, social media where again.
12:50
Speaker 5: We got we're on We're across so the social media platforms.

13:09

16:55
Speaker 9: Hi Jay, great to be here, Thank.
16:57
Speaker 4: You, thank you for being here.
16:58
Speaker 3: I know you're a busy, busy per sitting today and
17:00
Speaker 3: he had to call us up on the road just
17:02
Speaker 3: to do so safely, which I'm sure you are.
17:04
Speaker 4: Absolutely It's a good Diana. It's a good time to
17:08
Speaker 4: be a Republican in West Virginia.
17:09
Speaker 3: Is it not.
17:11
Speaker 9: I think it's always a good time to be a Republican.
17:14
Speaker 9: I enjoyed being one when a lot of my fellow
17:17
Speaker 9: West Virginians also take the same way.
17:19
Speaker 3: Yeah, and you know, Diana, most people think that Governor
17:22
Speaker 3: Justice is a shoe in to be the next US Senator,
17:25
Speaker 3: replacing Joe Manchin, who opted not to run, saying with
17:27
Speaker 3: Attorney General Patrick Morrissey, who was expected to, with all
17:31
Speaker 3: due respect to Steve Williams, is expected to defeat Steve Williams,
17:35
Speaker 3: the current Huntington mayor. So not I mean this, this
17:39
Speaker 3: state is solidly read and getting redder seemingly by the minute, Diana,
17:45
Speaker 3: it is.
17:46
Speaker 9: I mean, you can consider it a tendulum swing. Of course,
17:50
Speaker 9: we were eighty three from ten years pretty solidly Democrat,
17:55
Speaker 9: but West Virginians have always been a special breed of conservative.
18:01
Speaker 9: Democrat was the only option for a long time. But
18:03
Speaker 9: in the hearts of a lot of our people, they're
18:06
Speaker 9: fiscal conservatives. They're good, thought searing, sun loving, family oriented people.
18:14
Speaker 9: And really it's just over time they see that that
18:17
Speaker 9: Washington especially has a standoned those values, and they've just
18:21
Speaker 9: come home to the Republican.
18:22
Speaker 3: Party and that those kind of going to kind of
18:25
Speaker 3: lead me to my next question. Why is it that now?
18:28
Speaker 3: I mean, you know, I'm old enough to remember when
18:32
Speaker 3: I've told this story on the air before growing up
18:35
Speaker 3: as a kid in the seventies and eighties, and where
18:38
Speaker 3: I'm from in southern West Virginia, we didn't have enough
18:40
Speaker 3: Republicans to be poll workers, you know, as mandate because
18:43
Speaker 3: they because there just weren't any. The elections were effectively
18:47
Speaker 3: over in southern West Virginia in May with the May primary.
18:51
Speaker 3: Other than maybe president or something like that, but your
18:53
Speaker 3: local elections, your house or you know, legislator, county commission, whatever,
18:57
Speaker 3: everybody was a Democrat. Now that is seemingly changing to
19:01
Speaker 3: the other side. You touched on this a little bit,
19:04
Speaker 3: but expound on it a little bit. Why do you
19:06
Speaker 3: think this message of the Republican Party continues to resonate
19:11
Speaker 3: so much with West Virginia voters.
19:14
Speaker 9: Well, it's mostly in captured and what I said before,
19:17
Speaker 9: so West Virginia is just a different breed of Democrats.
19:23
Speaker 9: Even the Democrats from the Democrats that we still have,
19:26
Speaker 9: they haven't come yet to the Republican Party, but a
19:29
Speaker 9: lot of them in their hearts, they really hold to
19:33
Speaker 9: conservative values, and I think the schism that has been
19:37
Speaker 9: happening on the federal level is d see various pig
19:43
Speaker 9: metropolitan areas of the country that progressive progresses have taken
19:48
Speaker 9: over the Democrat Party and pushed it so far less
19:52
Speaker 9: that a lot of these people they don't even recognize
19:55
Speaker 9: their party anymore. They feel abandoned. Also so far as
19:58
Speaker 9: to say, I think they feel the trade and I
20:01
Speaker 9: don't blame them, so they feel a lot of them
20:04
Speaker 9: feels that they have no recourse really but to join
20:08
Speaker 9: a party where there are candidates that call the same
20:11
Speaker 9: kind of value as they do, and so they have
20:14
Speaker 9: just made It's a very moral choice. In a lot
20:17
Speaker 9: of cases, they have to switch because they're not going
20:20
Speaker 9: to betray who they are.
20:22
Speaker 3: I want to again, we're talking Diana Grays from the
20:24
Speaker 3: Knaw County Republican Party. I want to talk about that
20:26
Speaker 3: switching parties thing, because there has been a lot of
20:30
Speaker 3: people outside the elected world that have made the switch.
20:35
Speaker 3: But there are are also a lot that were Democrats.
20:38
Speaker 3: I mentioned Jim Justice that switch Republican. There have been
20:41
Speaker 3: others that have in the legislature and on county levels
20:44
Speaker 3: and on municipal levels and whatever. I've heard from some
20:47
Speaker 3: in the Republican Party though, that they are concerned that
20:53
Speaker 3: leopards don't change their spots, as one Republican once told me,
20:57
Speaker 3: and that you've got to be aware that just because
21:00
Speaker 3: somebody has now and are after their name, that they
21:03
Speaker 3: may just be doing that just to get elected. Is
21:06
Speaker 3: this a concern with those in power in the Republican Party, Well, yes.
21:11
Speaker 9: Because we're not stupid, so of course, of course it's
21:15
Speaker 9: going to happen. You have people who the ones I
21:18
Speaker 9: have been talking about are people who are switching because
21:22
Speaker 9: of a moral imperative. But they're of course human beings
21:26
Speaker 9: without the best votives.
21:27
Speaker 10: They just want to win.
21:29
Speaker 9: They want to be in power, they want to be
21:30
Speaker 9: the ones making decisions. They're going to do whatever it
21:33
Speaker 9: takes to get there, and those are the people we
21:35
Speaker 9: have to hear the most because they're power hungry and
21:39
Speaker 9: they don't care what they have the sacrifice to get there.
21:41
Speaker 9: So I have been pushing the State GOOP for a
21:44
Speaker 9: number of years now. When I ran for State GOP
21:48
Speaker 9: CO chair, one of my platform issues was we have
21:51
Speaker 9: to help the the electorate determined between those who truly
21:56
Speaker 9: hold Republican conservative values and those who are wolf wolves
22:00
Speaker 9: and she was clothing. And it's been a it's been difficult.
22:05
Speaker 11: You know.
22:05
Speaker 9: We want to have a great big tense and I
22:08
Speaker 9: absolutely asbout that value. But I don't I don't think
22:12
Speaker 9: that that includes throwing every single candidate who hadn't arbecized
22:16
Speaker 9: their name and holding them, you know, as those they
22:18
Speaker 9: are all the same value because they're they're quite different.
22:22
Speaker 4: Well, we saw this before, you know, as you mentioned that.
22:24
Speaker 3: We've mentioned a couple of times Dana with with the
22:26
Speaker 3: with the Democratic Party.
22:27
Speaker 4: I mean when they were in power. Let's take any decade.
22:29
Speaker 3: Let's say the nineteen sixties for example, not every Democrat
22:33
Speaker 3: was the same and and it's the same now I'm
22:37
Speaker 3: presuming with Republicans. How as somebody in a leadership position,
22:42
Speaker 3: as I said, you with the with the Republican Party
22:44
Speaker 3: in Kanawha County, how do how do you vet people?
22:48
Speaker 3: I guess I mean, is it questionnaire? As you just
22:50
Speaker 3: sit down and talk because.
22:52
Speaker 4: You feel that it's your job to educate the electorate.
22:54
Speaker 3: And I completely get that, but but how how do
22:57
Speaker 3: you actually go about that?
22:59
Speaker 9: So we in Kanna took a kind of too prong approach.
23:04
Speaker 9: If you had legislative history, if you had a voting record,
23:08
Speaker 9: we didn't even send you a questionnaire. We're going to
23:10
Speaker 9: grade your vote, which one how did you vote to
23:14
Speaker 9: uphold the values in the Republican Party platform when you
23:18
Speaker 9: had a chance to really exert your will. So that's
23:21
Speaker 9: so we did a grading system for those and right, honestly,
23:26
Speaker 9: some current legislators failed. And then for those who were
23:30
Speaker 9: seeking power for the first time, we did a questionnaire.
23:34
Speaker 9: Every single question was based in some meaningful way within
23:39
Speaker 9: the Republican Party platform. So we and we published their
23:44
Speaker 9: you know, if they were if they got a certain score,
23:47
Speaker 9: they were listed as at least conservative, and then if
23:50
Speaker 9: they didn't, they were marked is not conservative. And so
23:53
Speaker 9: we're doing our part. If you can't trust the Republican
23:57
Speaker 9: Party of the state to help voters to like figure
24:01
Speaker 9: out who has Republican values, who are you gonna look to.
24:04
Speaker 9: What we found is that people were forced to listen
24:08
Speaker 9: to every single special interest group that sent a mailer
24:11
Speaker 9: to their house because they're desperately searching for information. We
24:14
Speaker 9: don't want that. We want some somewhere for them to
24:17
Speaker 9: go to say, hey, I want to know what kind
24:20
Speaker 9: of values this Canada has when they were in power,
24:23
Speaker 9: how did they vote? Did they really do what they said?
24:25
Speaker 9: Because canteen promises are very easy to give and they're
24:28
Speaker 9: even easier to break.
24:30
Speaker 4: And indeed I agree with you on that.
24:32
Speaker 3: It's twenty eight minutes away from ten talking to Diana
24:35
Speaker 3: Graves to Dave Valid Show on five, Adeline brought to
24:37

24:51

24:52
Speaker 9: Yes, I lost you for second.
24:53
Speaker 4: Okay about your headquarters? You're about to open up a
24:56
Speaker 4: headquarters in Kannak County.
24:57
Speaker 9: Yeah, we did. We did open it or you did headquarters? Yeah,
25:01
Speaker 9: it's that if you know where budget tapes and records
25:04
Speaker 9: us to be. Yeah, it's over there in Kanash City.
25:06
Speaker 9: Almost everyone does. It's thirty seven eight mccorco Avenue, Southeast
25:11
Speaker 9: and we're open Monday through Friday from tens and sixty
25:14
Speaker 9: pm and then on Saturday from ten to too, and
25:17
Speaker 9: I want to say, you know, people are complacent because
25:21
Speaker 9: our majority is so big in this state. But I
25:24
Speaker 9: want to talk about Kanawh for just a moment. Pana
25:28
Speaker 9: is not a safe area. Cana and Montagay County. We
25:32
Speaker 9: have some counties in West Virginia where every vote counts,
25:36
Speaker 9: and I want to encourage people to turn out to vote.
25:41
Speaker 4: Come by.
25:42
Speaker 9: If you're not even sure, if you're registered, come by.
25:44
Speaker 9: We'll register you right on the spot. And I want
25:47
Speaker 9: to give some props to the former chair of the KCRAC.
25:51
Speaker 9: Her name is Teresa Howe. She's running for a House
25:53
Speaker 9: of Delegates. She's an incredible candidate. She was a former
25:57
Speaker 9: chair and she really has to play a large role
26:01
Speaker 9: in flipping Canal red. So I want to make sure
26:05
Speaker 9: and mention her. She is an excellent conservative candidate and
26:08
Speaker 9: I want to I want her name out there.
26:11
Speaker 3: We got a text here to the show. Somebody ask
26:13
Speaker 3: about to none of this is something that you get
26:14
Speaker 3: a lot people.
26:15
Speaker 4: Wanting Trump signs. Do you have Donald Trump signs?
26:18

26:18
Speaker 10: We sure do.
26:19
Speaker 9: Now we have. So if you go online you can

26:33

26:35
Speaker 3: Diana, It's always a pleasure to talk to you, and
26:37
Speaker 3: I do appreciate you tech. As I said, you're very
26:39
Speaker 3: busy and I appreciate you taking time out of your
26:41

26:43
Speaker 4: It's thanks a lot and we'll talk again soon.
26:46

26:47
Speaker 3: Diana Graaves again a former legislator and she is now
26:51
Speaker 3: I think the head of.
26:52
Speaker 4: The Kanawa the Kanawha County Republican Party.
26:57
Speaker 3: I believe that that is her title, but either way,
26:59
Speaker 3: she's very involved the Cana County Republican Party and it
27:02
Speaker 3: is now a red county, which took a.
27:05
Speaker 4: Lot of people by surprise.
27:07
Speaker 3: In the heart of West Virginia, there exists a profound
27:09

32:04
Speaker 3: that a long time fixture of marsh University tragically and
32:07
Speaker 3: surprisingly passed away. Woody woodrom just an icon in Huntington
32:12
Speaker 3: for Marshall University in the world of broadcasting for well
32:15
Speaker 3: over fifty years. In fact, he had just had the
32:18
Speaker 3: call on the Huntington Martinsburg game Friday night when a
32:22
Speaker 3: few hours later he passed away at home. Steve Cotton
32:24
Speaker 3: is the play by play guy for the Thundering Herd
32:26

32:28
Speaker 4: Now, Steve, good morning, welcome to the show.
32:30
Speaker 12: Good morning, Dave, thank you.
32:32
Speaker 3: Thanks for being here. It's always a pleasure to have
32:34
Speaker 3: you on the show. But Buddy, I wish it were
32:35
Speaker 3: under better circumstances.
32:37
Speaker 12: Yeah, that's for sure. We were in the press box
32:40
Speaker 12: at Lane Stadium and Virginia Tech when the word spread
32:44
Speaker 12: and that was yeah, that's just the kick you. And
32:50
Speaker 12: Woody was one of those guys who was so lively
32:54
Speaker 12: and was so gregarious and outgoing, and everywhere you were
32:59
Speaker 12: with him you had that giant laugh and all of
33:03
Speaker 12: a sudden the realization you weren't going to hear that again.
33:06
Speaker 12: Was a tough one, just.
33:08
Speaker 4: A great, great guy. And I know you know, Steve,
33:11
Speaker 4: when someone passes.
33:12
Speaker 3: Away that people always say, well, hopefully they'll they will say,
33:16
Speaker 3: oh he was a good guyer he or she was
33:18
Speaker 3: such a good person, or whatever the case would be.
33:20
Speaker 4: But in the case of Woody Woodrum, I mean just
33:22
Speaker 4: an all around good dude.
33:26
Speaker 12: Yes, and one who loved Marshall University and Dave, probably
33:33
Speaker 12: you would be very hard pressed to find somebody anywhere
33:37
Speaker 12: who spent more time thinking about and talking about this
33:42
Speaker 12: school than what he did fifty years from the time
33:45
Speaker 12: in nineteen seventy four he came to Huntington from Winfield
33:48
Speaker 12: as a Marshall student and he had two distinct careers, Dave,
33:53
Speaker 12: and both of them go back to that because he
33:55
Speaker 12: took journalism classes, but he went to work in the
34:00
Speaker 12: equipment room as a student equipment manager and when he graduated,
34:05
Speaker 12: that was his career and it was a career that
34:09
Speaker 12: made a difference that is still seen today. People because
34:14
Speaker 12: of what he's done for the last twenty years, may
34:17
Speaker 12: not realize that he was the equipment man at Marshall
34:22
Speaker 12: in the era when it went from a job where
34:25
Speaker 12: you do laundry and order shoes to it became known
34:31
Speaker 12: that how equipment could protect players, and specifically the biggest
34:37
Speaker 12: thing is helmets and being properly fitted and new technology
34:41
Speaker 12: and preventing concussions in that but all sorts, you know,
34:44
Speaker 12: shoulder pads that are fitted properly can help prevent injuries
34:47
Speaker 12: as well. And he was Marshall's man in that era
34:50
Speaker 12: and realized and pushed for additional training and certifications and
34:56
Speaker 12: licensures and deve you hear in the world of sports
35:01
Speaker 12: about quarterback coaching trees like Mike Leach's in the air
35:06
Speaker 12: raid offense, and you see where that spreads to and
35:09
Speaker 12: in broadcasting sports casting Syracuse, all those Syracuse alumps, who
35:15
Speaker 12: you have that tree. In the world of college football equipment,
35:20
Speaker 12: Woody is the godfather of a big tree. And just
35:22
Speaker 12: a couple of examples you had Notre Dame's top equipment
35:28
Speaker 12: man for several years, just got out of the business.
35:31
Speaker 12: Ryan Grooms was a Marshall guy. Just last week at
35:34
Speaker 12: Virginia Tech. Eric Lewis is a Marshall guy. And you
35:37
Speaker 12: trace all of that back to Woody and the people
35:41
Speaker 12: who followed him, like Matt Lewis and Rich Warner and
35:44
Speaker 12: so on and so forth. But these guys are all
35:46
Speaker 12: over the country. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of their youngsters,
35:50
Speaker 12: Kyle Poter, is a Marshall guy. So that was a
35:53
Speaker 12: long lasting and significant contribution.
35:56
Speaker 4: To the world of sports along those lines.
35:58
Speaker 3: I just got a text from Bill Woodrum, who is
36:01
Speaker 3: a very good friend of mine and the and the
36:03
Speaker 3: brother of Woody, And I'll talk about Bill's statement a
36:07
Speaker 3: little bit later on, but he tells me that wood
36:09
Speaker 3: he actually designed the current m on the helmet for
36:13
Speaker 3: Jim Donnon Yes.
36:16
Speaker 12: And the list goes on and on and on with
36:22
Speaker 12: little things like that that make a big and again
36:26
Speaker 12: unless someone like Bill knows the story and can pass on.
36:31
Speaker 12: It's the sort of thing that people, even though who
36:34
Speaker 12: knew it at the time, may not remember. Because then
36:36
Speaker 12: when the equipment job wore down his body and he
36:40
Speaker 12: couldn't do that anymore, he made the transition into writing
36:44
Speaker 12: and broadcasting sports for several years with us on the
36:48
Speaker 12: Thundering Herd network, and that's where I've got to know
36:52
Speaker 12: him well. So many road trips rooming together and so
36:55
Speaker 12: many laughs. And then even when the body again broke
36:59
Speaker 12: down a little the morning he couldn't travel anymore, he
37:01
Speaker 12: still was a fixture at everything Marshall, at high school
37:05
Speaker 12: stuff around Huntington, and he made a difference in a
37:08
Speaker 12: second career on that side of things.
37:10
Speaker 3: Talking to Steve Cotton again the voice of the Thundering Herd,
37:12
Speaker 3: on the death of Woody Woodroum, you know, I never, Steve,
37:15
Speaker 3: I never met anyone who had a bad word to
37:17
Speaker 3: say about Woody, and in our business, the broadcasting side
37:21
Speaker 3: of it, but you know that's a rarity's.
37:24
Speaker 12: Debit rarity well because he always uh, well, if he
37:31
Speaker 12: didn't have a smile on his face, it didn't last
37:33
Speaker 12: that way long. And he would bounce back and be happy.
37:36
Speaker 12: And Dave, you know, we talked about his physical challenges
37:39
Speaker 12: as his life went on. A couple of years ago
37:43
Speaker 12: he had a very significant illness and weren't sure he
37:47
Speaker 12: was going to make it through that. He ended up
37:48
Speaker 12: in a rehab facility across the river in South Point, Ohio.
37:52
Speaker 12: And uh, I remember going over to visit him there,
37:55
Speaker 12: and that's a rough place. There's not a lot of laughter.
37:58
Speaker 12: I walked in the door, went to the front desk,
38:00
Speaker 12: was going about to ask, all right, can you tell
38:02
Speaker 12: me what room Woody Woodrom's in? And I heard that
38:05
Speaker 12: laugh down the hallway and I told the guy, nope,
38:08
Speaker 12: I got it. And I just followed the noise and
38:10
Speaker 12: was able to go visit him. And he bounced back
38:12
Speaker 12: from that and had a couple of more years hanging
38:15
Speaker 12: around sports in Huntington and at Marshall specifically. So and
38:21
Speaker 12: you mentioned Bill. Bill works in economic development in the
38:24
Speaker 12: state of West Virginia. Another brother, Jim, and all these
38:26
Speaker 12: guys worked for Woody in the Marshall Equipment Room to
38:30
Speaker 12: get their start. Jim went onto a long career in
38:33
Speaker 12: sports marketing. Now he teaches sports marketing classes and the
38:37
Speaker 12: Brad Smith College of Business here at Marshall University. So
38:41
Speaker 12: the Woodroom family legacy is something that we all know about,
38:46
Speaker 12: and Woody was the one who got it all started.
38:49
Speaker 3: Indeed, while I have you here, Steve, I would be
38:52
Speaker 3: remiss if I didn't at least talk a little bit
38:54
Speaker 3: about Marshall Thurner and heard football. You know, they went
38:57
Speaker 3: down to Blacksburg on Saturday afternoon, and I don't think
39:00
Speaker 3: a whole lot of people expected.
39:02
Speaker 4: Them to win the game. I don't think they played
39:04
Speaker 4: all that badly your thoughts.
39:07
Speaker 12: The defense stood tall and held Virginia Tech to three
39:11
Speaker 12: hundred and thirty eight yards of total offense. A special
39:15
Speaker 12: teams play against Marshall was a difference maker. First Virginia
39:19
Speaker 12: Tech touchdowns was on a punt return, but then the
39:21
Speaker 12: Marshall special teamers got that back by blocking a punt
39:25
Speaker 12: that went out of bounds at the five yard line,
39:27
Speaker 12: scored a touchdown. And then at the end of the
39:30
Speaker 12: game you're trailing, so you have to go for it
39:33
Speaker 12: on fourth down. A couple of times Marshall had two
39:36
Speaker 12: long drives down into the red zone, including one to
39:38
Speaker 12: the six yard line. Couldn't settle for field goals at
39:41
Speaker 12: that point, had to go for it easily, could have
39:44
Speaker 12: been a little bit closer. Now Marshall knows it needs
39:47
Speaker 12: to get more done on offense than it was able
39:49
Speaker 12: to do in Blacksburg. Now there's a bye week, you
39:51
Speaker 12: can go back to work specifically on yourself. But after
39:55
Speaker 12: the open date, a couple of weeks down the road,
39:57
Speaker 12: Marshall is at Ohio State. So there's another huge challenge
40:00
Speaker 12: in store next in line for coach Charles Soustein.
40:03
Speaker 4: Oh, come on, how.
40:04
Speaker 3: Hard could it be to go to to go to
40:06
Speaker 3: the Horseshoe and beat Ohio State.
40:08
Speaker 12: Well we'll find out now, won't. That's what everybody said
40:11
Speaker 12: a couple of years ago with Marshall.
40:13
Speaker 3: I still I still remember that that quite well. Hey, Steve,
40:18
Speaker 3: I know this was a difficult to think getting back
40:19
Speaker 3: to Woody woodrom and it was difficult for you because
40:21
Speaker 3: you guys were very close. I'll leave you with a
40:24
Speaker 3: quick woody woodrom and I've got plenty of woody woodroom stories,
40:26
Speaker 3: but I'll leave you with one of my Ten years ago,
40:30
Speaker 3: the city of Chapmanville, in my native Logan County, played
40:33
Speaker 3: host to the state Little League Baseball tournament and I
40:36
Speaker 3: was doing some more promotion type stuff. Then the city
40:39
Speaker 3: hired me and my company to cheap Plug for Dave
40:43
Speaker 3: Maley Communications, to come to kind of just put the
40:46
Speaker 3: whole thing on. You know, I mean, the onfield thing
40:48
Speaker 3: is one thing, but you gotta, you know, you got
40:50
Speaker 3: to organize, well, who's going to throw out the first
40:53
Speaker 3: pitch and who's going to do the national anthem and
40:55
Speaker 3: that sort of thing.
40:56
Speaker 4: So that's what they hired me to do, basically.
40:58
Speaker 3: Was to the entire duction around the state Lilllegue Baseball
41:01
Speaker 3: tournament for a week in Chapmanville. And Wood he was
41:05
Speaker 3: broadcasting one of the local teams from Huntington, Barbersville, somewhere
41:08
Speaker 3: down there, and he came down there and the press
41:11
Speaker 3: box at the end, and this is at the Chapmanville
41:14
Speaker 3: Regional High School facility, which is a big, massive facility,
41:17
Speaker 3: not the most easily accessible press box in the world.
41:21
Speaker 3: And as you said, even ten years ago, Wood he
41:22
Speaker 3: had some health issues and I got the pleasure of
41:25
Speaker 3: carrying his cases for him up the I think it
41:28
Speaker 3: was like two flights of stairs to get to that
41:30
Speaker 3: press box.
41:31
Speaker 4: He was very appreciative of it, but I don't think.
41:34
Speaker 3: A couple of points I had to stop because he
41:37
Speaker 3: was saying things to make me laugh so loudly that
41:40
Speaker 3: I was like, what do you want me to carry this?
41:42
Speaker 3: Or do you not because I can't carry your stuff
41:44
Speaker 3: and listen to you at the same time. That's who
41:46
Speaker 3: Woody Woodron was.
41:48
Speaker 12: That's true. And you know, over the last few days,
41:52
Speaker 12: you don't go a few minutes without thinking about what
41:54
Speaker 12: he and you're sad, But then a minute later, I've
41:57
Speaker 12: got a smile on my face and that is a wonderful.
42:01
Speaker 4: Indeed it is. Hey, Steve, I appreciate you being here.
42:03
Speaker 4: We will talk Someboddy, thanks a lot.
42:05
Speaker 12: Hi. Dave ad One.
42:06
Speaker 3: Steve Cotton, the voice of the Thundering Herd on the
42:09
Speaker 3: loss of Woody Woodroam one of the all time just good,
42:12
Speaker 3: good guys. And as I said, in this broadcasting business
42:14
Speaker 3: that I've been a part of for thirty six years,
42:17
Speaker 3: it's hard to find anybody that no one will say
42:19
Speaker 3: anything bad about.
42:20
Speaker 4: I mean me included, But Woody was just one of
42:25
Speaker 4: the good guys.
42:25
Speaker 3: And I got a text, as I said, I'm very
42:27
Speaker 3: good friends with his brother Bill, and I got a
42:28
Speaker 3: text that asked if I could just say thank you
42:31
Speaker 3: to everyone from the Woodroom family. The outpoint of love
42:34
Speaker 3: for Woody and their family has been amazing and overwhelming.
42:37
Speaker 3: That's a text for Bill, the brother of Woody Woodroam.
42:39
Speaker 3: He will definitely, definitely there's a giant hole in the
42:44
Speaker 3: Jewels City now at Marshall University first and again, as
42:47
Speaker 3: Steve said, you know, starting in the equipment room and
42:51
Speaker 3: then transitioning into broadcasting. And the last thing he did
42:55
Speaker 3: in the world of broadcasting on Friday night was he
42:58
Speaker 3: did the call of the Hontington Martinsburg So he still
43:01
Speaker 3: had that love.

47:39
Speaker 3: lost their collective minds Oh of this guy. He fancied

Speaker 3: himself as an Internet celebrity, real estate mogul, etc.
47:45
Speaker 5: Etc.
47:46
Speaker 3: Well, now he's facing some big time trouble with the Feds,

48:12
Speaker 3: talking about how far left the Democrats have gradually gone
48:15
Speaker 3: over the past few decades. These dangerous illegals, like the
48:19
Speaker 3: Venezuelan gangs in Aurora, Chicago, and Houston are now in
48:22
Speaker 3: small towns. Check out the video from a city council
48:25
Speaker 3: meeting in Springfield, Ohio. Over ten thousand Haitian illegals were
48:29
Speaker 3: sent there by this administration, and one gentleman stated that
48:32
Speaker 3: children cannot go to the park because they've seen these
48:35
Speaker 3: illegals pick up some of the ducks by the neck,
48:37
Speaker 3: kill them and walk away with them.
48:39
Speaker 4: To cook and eat them.
48:42
Speaker 3: Wake up people, This is getting very close to home,
48:46
Speaker 3: says a Texter.
48:49
Speaker 4: Guns in America.
48:51
Speaker 3: The latest school shooting in Georgia last week, and I
48:56
Speaker 3: touched on this briefly because it was based on a text.
48:59
Speaker 3: I got to this show that the father of the
49:02
Speaker 3: shooter in that particular situation in Georgia from last week
49:06
Speaker 3: is being charged in a big time a second degree murder,
49:09
Speaker 3: I think is what it was. The question on everyone's
49:14
Speaker 3: mind is what do we do about it? And every
49:17
Speaker 3: time that there is either a school shooting or a
49:22
Speaker 3: mass shooting in a public place, which is kind of
49:24
Speaker 3: concentrated on school shootings now, people wring their hands and
49:29
Speaker 3: say thoughts and prayers.
49:32
Speaker 4: What do we do about it?
49:34
Speaker 5: Now?
49:34
Speaker 4: I will state point.
49:35
Speaker 3: Blank, I'm a gun guy, and you will never ever
49:38
Speaker 3: hear me blame the gun.
49:41
Speaker 4: I blame the person.
49:43
Speaker 3: But with this particular case, there were so many red
49:48
Speaker 3: flags with this shooter that went unchecked. You've heard the
49:55
Speaker 3: story now about the FBI being sent to the parents'
49:58
Speaker 3: house because of threats what couple of years ago and
50:01
Speaker 3: they found no credible evidence. The FBI comes back and says, hey,
50:06
Speaker 3: if the parents say he's okay, and we talked to
50:08
Speaker 3: the kid and we don't see any sort of threat
50:12
Speaker 3: from him, imminent threat.
50:14
Speaker 4: Based on interviews to them, what are we supposed to do?
50:17
Speaker 4: And I get that.
50:18
Speaker 3: I completely understand what they're saying. Now it's come out
50:21
Speaker 3: that the mother of the shooter actually called the school
50:26
Speaker 3: that day warning them that something could happen. I'm like
50:32
Speaker 3: a lot of you. I bring things up on the show.
50:34
Speaker 3: I just have a different platform. I bring things up
50:36
Speaker 3: on the show, and I don't have answers to it
50:39
Speaker 3: because I don't know what the answer is to this.
50:44
Speaker 3: But I will say this, and this is the This
50:48
Speaker 3: is direct from the Captain Obvious file. We got to
50:53
Speaker 3: do better, and I don't know what. I don't know
50:58
Speaker 3: what that better is. I may spend some time in
51:04
Speaker 3: a show in the next couple of days laying it
51:06
Speaker 3: out there to you as to what your answer is,
51:10
Speaker 3: because I seriously.
51:13
Speaker 4: I don't know. I don't know what the answer is.
51:17
Speaker 3: Tomorrow night, as I mentioned earlier, the first and perhaps
51:20
Speaker 3: only debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President
51:24
Speaker 3: Kambala Harris. We will have coverage of the debate here
51:27
Speaker 3: on WCCHS starting tomorrow night at eight o'clock. I'll spend
51:31
Speaker 3: some time on Wednesday reviewing it. But I will say
51:33
Speaker 3: this going in that no matter what happens, your candidate,
51:39
Speaker 3: the candidate of your choosing, will be the winner, because
51:42
Speaker 3: that's kind of where we are right now in America.
51:44
Speaker 4: Mark my words.
51:46
Speaker 3: If I were handicapping this thing, I would give the
51:48
Speaker 3: edge to Harris because quite frankly, she is a much
51:52
Speaker 3: better speaker. She'll went on style points and she's a prosecutor.
51:57
Speaker 3: But well, totally with whole judgment on that, I guess
52:00
Speaker 3: until we have the show on Wednesday after the debate again.
52:04
Speaker 3: Our coverage of the debate will start tomorrow night via
52:06
Speaker 3: ABC Radio starting at eight o'clock.
52:08
Speaker 4: Coming up by tomorrow's show.
52:09
Speaker 3: More on this weekend's rip fest and how you can
