- 0:03Speaker 1: The Foul Territory Spring Training Tour is engineered by Fastnall.
- 0:06Speaker 1: We keep running AJ's hustling. By the way, check out
- 0:09Speaker 1: more information at fastnall dot com at aste n al
- 0:15Speaker 1: dot com. They're also unveiling the calendar for us. We're
- 0:18Speaker 1: taking you on the AJA Tour. We started with the
- 0:20Speaker 1: Royals last week, a week ago from today, and now
- 0:24Speaker 1: we're in Red's camp today tomorrow, with the Cubs, Diamondbacks
- 0:28Speaker 1: on Thursday, Giants on Friday. By the way, for any
- 0:30Speaker 1: of the teams that we're visiting, if you want us
- 0:32Speaker 1: to talk to someone specifically, please let us know. Comment
- 0:36Speaker 1: on this video on the vod not on the live.
- 0:39Speaker 1: On the live, I'll see you, but also comment on
- 0:41Speaker 1: the video once this is officially posted and not live anymore.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Also, you can send us a direct message on Instagram.
- 0:47Speaker 1: We're looking at what AJ's view is of Red's camp
- 0:51Speaker 1: right now. Looks like a beautiful day out there, AJ,
- 0:54Speaker 1: for a team that I think you keep reminding people about.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Many people forget very successful year for the Reds. They
- 1:02Speaker 1: made it back to the playoffs and they ran into
- 1:03Speaker 1: a buzzsaw, but overall the Reds made a nice step forward.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Yeah, they made the playoffs. People people just don't want
- 1:11Speaker 3: to remember that the Reds made the playoffs because of
- 1:15Speaker 3: the way that it ended with the Dodger Series and
- 1:18Speaker 3: they got pushed out in two quick games. But three
- 1:21Speaker 3: teams from the Anol Central made the postseason last year,
- 1:24Speaker 3: the Brewers, the Cups, and the Reds. Now you can
- 1:26Speaker 3: say it was the Mets that collapse or whatever. This
- 1:28Speaker 3: team made the postseason. They go out, they signed Gino Suarez,
- 1:32Speaker 3: they bring back Amelia Bagone, They the lefty Caleb Ferguson,
- 1:36Speaker 3: they bring in, they made they got rid of Gavin Lux,
- 1:38Speaker 3: brought in, you know, in a trade. They made some
- 1:40Speaker 3: other moves. They tried to sign Kyle Schwarber, it didn't
- 1:42Speaker 3: work out. They're doing things. They have Tito Francona, who
- 1:46Speaker 3: will talk to later. They have some things up their sleeve.
- 1:49Speaker 3: And I really like this team, and we've been saying
- 1:51Speaker 3: for a couple of years now. They can keep pushing, pushing, pushing,
- 1:54Speaker 3: especially if Lodolo Ashcraft, uh Abbott, Brady Singer, those guys
- 2:01Speaker 3: are healthy, and if Ellie de la Cruz takes that
- 2:03Speaker 3: next step, man, this team could be can be really good.
- 2:06Speaker 1: So I want you to bottle that up and we'll
- 2:08Speaker 1: extend that conversation a little bit later when we talk
- 2:11Speaker 1: about the red season preview. We have Terry Francona coming soon.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Also conversations with Amelio Pagan, Brady Singer and maybe Hunter Green,
- 2:21Speaker 1: maybe Gino Suarez. So a lot to do in the
- 2:23Speaker 1: next couple hours. Also want to remind everyone that's watching today,
- 2:27Speaker 1: especially looking at the Reds Riverfront Territories part of the
- 2:32Speaker 1: FT Network. CE Trent Rosekrantz covers this team on a
- 2:35Speaker 1: daily basis. He's the beat guy for the Athletic covering
- 2:38Speaker 1: the Reds for years now, and Danny Graves in the
- 2:40Speaker 1: Reds Hall of Fame part of the Ft fam is
- 2:43Speaker 1: also running that show. So again, give that show some love. YouTube, subscribe, podcasts, Apple, Spotify,
- 2:50Speaker 1: wherever you get them.
- 2:51Speaker 2: That would be great.
- 2:52Speaker 1: We're not just talking Reds over the course of the
- 2:55Speaker 1: next couple hours, So let's get to the headliner today.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Charge about.
- 3:02Speaker 1: More money for AJ's former teammate Chris Sale. He said
- 3:06Speaker 1: people were asking him about potential retirement scratch that add
- 3:11Speaker 1: another year to his contract one year, twenty seven million
- 3:13Speaker 1: dollars is the extension that also includes a club option
- 3:17Speaker 1: for the Braves to activate for thirty million dollars in
- 3:20Speaker 1: twenty twenty eight. I passing originally breaking the story. The
- 3:22Speaker 1: thirty six year old would have been a free agent
- 3:25Speaker 1: who knows he's getting up there in years, but he's
- 3:28Speaker 1: still looking like prime Chris Sale. Chad Bishop with this
- 3:33Speaker 1: tweet that he posted from Sale. We have a great manager,
- 3:35Speaker 1: great front office, core group of players that are going
- 3:37Speaker 1: to be here for a while, good young talent coming up,
- 3:39Speaker 1: excited for that.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I want to be here for that.
- 3:40Speaker 1: And it gets you guys off my back asking me
- 3:43Speaker 1: if I'm going to retire at the end of this year.
- 3:47Speaker 1: So we're up to over two hundred and sixty million
- 3:51Speaker 1: guaranteed dollars over the course of Chris Sale's career. And
- 3:54Speaker 1: he looks back and he remembers his early days playing
- 3:58Speaker 1: catch with you, Aja, I.
- 4:01Speaker 5: Mean, where's my cut sailor?
- 4:02Speaker 6: Can?
- 4:02Speaker 3: I mean, I'm don't have to call him and be like, dude,
- 4:05Speaker 3: I need like a one percent of that at least
- 4:07Speaker 3: like something right because I was there for his debut,
- 4:09Speaker 3: I was there when he was a closer, and now
- 4:11Speaker 3: here he is two hundred and fifty million plus in
- 4:15Speaker 3: the bank, living in his you know, big mansion down
- 4:18Speaker 3: in Florida. You know, I remember his days back when
- 4:20Speaker 3: he was in Lakeland at FGCU hoping to get drafted,
- 4:23Speaker 3: and he grinded through the minor leagues for all of about,
- 4:26Speaker 3: i don't know, three weeks before he was in the
- 4:28Speaker 3: big league. So you know, he really needs to not
- 4:31Speaker 3: forget about the small people. And uh, you know, like me, sailor.
- 4:34Speaker 3: So I'm really happy for Chris Man. Great guy, great person,
- 4:38Speaker 3: just a fun guy to be around. He's been through
- 4:40Speaker 3: some ups and down, nine time All Star, he's got
- 4:42Speaker 3: that cy young He's on a Hall of Fame track.
- 4:45Speaker 3: I'm just happy for Chris Saale and his family because
- 4:47Speaker 3: they are good people.
- 4:49Speaker 4: I love it because the first time he ever came
- 4:51Speaker 4: on our show, we asked him, you think you're a
- 4:53Speaker 4: Hall of Famer and he's like, ooh, I don't know.
- 4:56Speaker 4: And now he's on his second extension with the Braves.
- 5:00Speaker 4: He signed an extension with the with the Red Sox earlier.
- 5:04Speaker 4: I'm not sure if he signed something of the White Sox.
- 5:06Speaker 4: But to have three extensions in your career, to me,
- 5:11Speaker 4: I think it shows it shows obviously teams are like
- 5:14Speaker 4: WHOA like we see an opportunity to lock a guy up,
- 5:17Speaker 4: he's willing to take it. We'll do it, Yes, But
- 5:19Speaker 4: to sign an extension, you have to like where you're at,
- 5:22Speaker 4: or you have to be committed to where you're at,
- 5:25Speaker 4: like he was committed to be in Boston. Did that
- 5:28Speaker 4: contract once they signed the extension workout?
- 5:30Speaker 2: No?
- 5:31Speaker 4: Did the first part of it work out? Absolutely? You
- 5:34Speaker 4: know they he signed an extension. You know, look kind
- 5:38Speaker 4: of odd right when he got to the Braves turned
- 5:40Speaker 4: out to be amazing for the Braves, and in his
- 5:43Speaker 4: time there, he doesn't sit there and go, Man, I
- 5:45Speaker 4: feel like I got screwed signed that extension. You know,
- 5:49Speaker 4: I wanted to cy young. No, Like, he just seems
- 5:52Speaker 4: because I don't know him any more than my interaction
- 5:54Speaker 4: with him on our show in the different times that
- 5:56Speaker 4: we've seen him live, Like, he just seems like somebody
- 6:00Speaker 4: that's committed to being the best he can for whatever
- 6:03Speaker 4: team he's on. And I think this is huge obviously,
- 6:07Speaker 4: anybody says when he's getting up there in age, there's
- 6:10Speaker 4: plenty of really good Hall of Fame pitchers that are
- 6:13Speaker 4: pitching past forty, and he will only be thirty seven
- 6:16Speaker 4: when he plays on this extension season, and it's only
- 6:20Speaker 4: at twenty seven million, so if he goes out and
- 6:22Speaker 4: stays healthy this year, he could have been looking at
- 6:25Speaker 4: possibly two years at twenty seven a year. So it's
- 6:31Speaker 4: great for the Braves, and I think it's obviously great
- 6:33Speaker 4: for sale, or he wouldn't have signed it.
- 6:38Speaker 1: And now let's talk about the number one rated ticketing app.
- 6:42Speaker 1: It's called seat Geek, And what I'm gonna do here
- 6:45Speaker 1: each day is just run through a few reasons why
- 6:47Speaker 1: you should be checking out tickets for spring training guys.
- 6:50Speaker 1: So again, today's Tuesday for Tuesday show, but I'm looking
- 6:53Speaker 1: at Wednesday games, So tonight you can go and find
- 6:56Speaker 1: Paul Skeins pitching actually against the Braves on Wednesday. That's
- 7:00Speaker 1: probably the one start, and then you go on to
- 7:03Speaker 1: Team USA and the World Baseball Classic. Kratz is boy,
- 7:06Speaker 1: I know the ticket you're getting.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Kratz.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Johann O Viedo, your favorite pitcher in baseball I think,
- 7:11Speaker 1: is making his spring training debut for Boston against the
- 7:14Speaker 1: Twins on Wednesday. Cody Ponce making his debut for the
- 7:18Speaker 1: Blue Jays, signed for thirty million bucks this offseason.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Casey Maiz pitching against him.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Hunter Brown making his spring debut Nicoldolo as we're at
- 7:24Speaker 1: Red's camp, He's going to pitch on Wednesday, and Rookie
- 7:27Speaker 1: Sazaki for the Dodgers. So a lot of good pitchers
- 7:30Speaker 1: to look at and you can find them in Arizona
- 7:32Speaker 1: or in Florida in those spring training games and also
- 7:35Speaker 1: aj of course World Baseball Classic around the corner. So
- 7:39Speaker 1: each ticket rated on a scale of one to ten,
- 7:41Speaker 1: so you know you're getting a good deal or maybe
- 7:43Speaker 1: a not so good deal, and then you can find
- 7:45Speaker 1: yourself a better deal.
- 7:47Speaker 4: I think I love about Seekik too is people that
- 7:49Speaker 4: are people that are scheduling their trips to Florida especially,
- 7:53Speaker 4: you got to kind of figure out your drive. You
- 7:56Speaker 4: can go through the schedule of when, where all the
- 7:59Speaker 4: games are, where you'll be sitting, because in Florida you're
- 8:02Speaker 4: you're a Northerner. You sit there and you go, ah,
- 8:05Speaker 4: I don't want to be out of the sun. You'll
- 8:07Speaker 4: know which side of the stadium during that game time
- 8:10Speaker 4: has that and you have a little shade if you
- 8:12Speaker 4: want it or if you want the sun, you get it.
- 8:16Speaker 1: And of course we have a code for you territory
- 8:18Speaker 1: ten ten percent off your next set of tickets at
- 8:20Speaker 1: SEKK ten percent off any tickets with promo code Territory
- 8:24Speaker 1: one zero. Make sure you click the link in the
- 8:26Speaker 1: description to download the app, have the code automatically added
- 8:29Speaker 1: to your account at that point so you can use
- 8:31Speaker 1: it later.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Thank you, Sea geek Aj. He was hurt a lot with.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Boston, like Kratz mentioned, but this is a prime example
- 8:39Speaker 1: of someone who is aging gracefully and aging like a
- 8:42Speaker 1: fine wine. Insert whatever phrase you want to use. Sometimes
- 8:46Speaker 1: I talk to people across the game that say they
- 8:48Speaker 1: don't want to sign pictures deep into their career, and
- 8:50Speaker 1: I'm like, maybe not any picture, but if it's a
- 8:54Speaker 1: number one guy and he.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Still got it.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Chris Sale is the example of someone who's thirty six
- 8:59Speaker 1: years old who's come off the season where, yes, he
- 9:01Speaker 1: wasn't one hundred percent healthy the whole year, he gave
- 9:03Speaker 1: them about one hundred twenty five innings, but two and
- 9:05Speaker 1: a half ERA his production per inning was just as
- 9:07Speaker 1: good as the year before. So young year two three
- 9:10Speaker 1: eight ERA one hundred and seventy seven and two thirds innings.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Are there some injury concerns?
- 9:15Speaker 2: Sure? Are there?
- 9:16Speaker 1: Injury concerns with just about everyone else that has an
- 9:19Speaker 1: arm that throws in Major League Baseball. Yes, I think
- 9:21Speaker 1: the point here is that if you've got a stuff
- 9:25Speaker 1: like this and you can carry it, then the Braves
- 9:28Speaker 1: did the smart thing by bringing it on, giving him
- 9:31Speaker 1: these little tack on one year extensions and maximizing value.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Right they've got an ace.
- 9:36Speaker 1: They've got a guy at the top of the rotation
- 9:37Speaker 1: for a team right now that I think is in
- 9:39Speaker 1: some depth trouble on the starting rotation front. They have
- 9:42Speaker 1: a roster crunch. Ken Rosenthal spoke about this. They have
- 9:45Speaker 1: Joey Webz and Bryce Elder who don't have options anymore.
- 9:47Speaker 1: So if they pick up someone like Lucas Gildo or
- 9:50Speaker 1: Zach Lttel, they'd have to bounce one of those guys
- 9:53Speaker 1: off the roster. So Chris Sell is needed more than ever.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Right now.
- 9:57Speaker 1: They're down Schwellenbach, they're down Hurston Waldrip, and we are
- 10:00Speaker 1: not even halfway through spring training.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Yeah, but this is perfect for Chris Sale. I mean,
- 10:06Speaker 3: if you go Sales, Strider, Lopez, those guys stay healthy,
- 10:08Speaker 3: that's a pretty good one two three of Strider, especially
- 10:11Speaker 3: if Strider is back to where he was before his
- 10:13Speaker 3: arm injury. Listen, I love Chris Sale. So my feelings
- 10:17Speaker 3: are well known, but I think the Braves need Chris
- 10:19Speaker 3: Sale to be good. And I love they jumped in
- 10:21Speaker 3: front of this because it gives him security, gives them
- 10:23Speaker 3: security knowing they'll have Chris Sale for at least this
- 10:25Speaker 3: year and next year and in twenty twenty eight if
- 10:29Speaker 3: he's still pitch him, well, they can pick him up
- 10:30Speaker 3: and they already know what that price.
- 10:31Speaker 6: Is going to be.
- 10:32Speaker 3: So I love this. I love this deal for both parties. Now,
- 10:36Speaker 3: just he Chris Spencer and Ronaldo to stay healthy. And
- 10:38Speaker 3: that's a pretty good one two three.
- 10:41Speaker 4: When you sit there and you look at an older
- 10:42Speaker 4: player at the end, what people see is the end
- 10:45Speaker 4: of his career. You say, oh, well, you know his
- 10:48Speaker 4: strikeouts are going to drop. He's not that type of
- 10:51Speaker 4: picture where he has to throw one hundred miles an
- 10:54Speaker 4: hour the entire outing. He can still dial it up
- 10:57Speaker 4: to ninety seven ninety eight when he needs to. But
- 10:59Speaker 4: that's slider to me. That's the part that doesn't seem
- 11:02Speaker 4: like it. Ages and hitters just don't see that angle.
- 11:06Speaker 4: They don't see the angle and they're not picking it up,
- 11:08Speaker 4: and he's still racking up a ton of strikeouts, even
- 11:10Speaker 4: in the year last year when he was hurt. It's
- 11:13Speaker 4: to me, I think it's it's a no brainer for
- 11:16Speaker 4: the Braves to have signed this extension.
- 11:19Speaker 1: They also need left handed starting pitching. Aj how important
- 11:22Speaker 1: is that everyone else in their stable is right handed?
- 11:26Speaker 1: The guys that are hurt and the rest of the
- 11:28Speaker 1: current starting staff that's peg to begin the year. So
- 11:31Speaker 1: if you take out Schwellenbach and Waldrip, who are both
- 11:33Speaker 1: right handers, you've got Strider, Lopez, Grant Holmes, so he
- 11:37Speaker 1: has good stuff. See if he stays on the mound,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and then Bryce Elder those are all right handed pitchers.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Yeah, break it up. And we did a whole thing.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Remember the whole thing on how dominant lefties were last year.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I mean, Schooble, you start with school and work your
- 11:49Speaker 3: way down, but how there was a whole thing about
- 11:51Speaker 3: how dominant, how much more dominant left handed pitchers have become.
- 11:54Speaker 3: And Chris Hill, when he's right, can be as good
- 11:57Speaker 3: as any of them. Maybe not Trek Scooble, just because
- 11:59Speaker 3: he's older. Sar So, I love you, but I don't
- 12:01Speaker 3: know if you were that good because you're you know,
- 12:03Speaker 3: you're just so old at this point in your life,
- 12:05Speaker 3: you know, and you're starting to get great hair in
- 12:07Speaker 3: the beard. So when I see you all, make sure
- 12:08Speaker 3: I tell you this. But he's one of the if
- 12:10Speaker 3: he's healthy, he's still a top five pitcher and definitely
- 12:14Speaker 3: a top five lefty in baseball.
- 12:16Speaker 4: So you guys got to solidify it. AJ, and then Scott,
- 12:20Speaker 4: Hall of famer, yes.
- 12:21Speaker 5: Or no, Yes, and I'll get invited to Cooperstown.
- 12:25Speaker 3: So Apps, he's fifty seven point three war right now,
- 12:29Speaker 3: he's got a cy young, he's got a World Series.
- 12:32Speaker 3: What else you gotta do? He's he's a Hall of
- 12:34Speaker 3: Famer right now. If he plays two more years, three
- 12:37Speaker 3: more years, and he gets to seventy. Let's say he
- 12:40Speaker 3: gets four wins four war year, that almost puts him
- 12:42Speaker 3: at seventy war, he's a first ballot guy.
- 12:44Speaker 1: Then Scott, oh, I always love when AJ starts ripping
- 12:49Speaker 1: war numbers.
- 12:50Speaker 2: It's just fun. It shows how far we've come.
- 12:52Speaker 1: No, but that is yeah, but it also does I can.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Just get I can just give an analytical answer in
- 13:00Speaker 3: that way. People can't say, oh, you're biased toward them. Well,
- 13:02Speaker 3: I can look at the numbers and say, listen, he's
- 13:04Speaker 3: one hundred and forty five and eighty eight right now
- 13:06Speaker 3: in his career. His EER for his life is three
- 13:09Speaker 3: point zero one. Okay, that's pretty good. He's got over
- 13:13Speaker 3: two thousand innings, he's got over what has he got
- 13:16Speaker 3: twenty almost twenty six hundred strikeouts? If he stays healthy
- 13:20Speaker 3: for two more years, he's gonna get the three thousand strikeouts.
- 13:22Speaker 5: This isn't even a conversation. He's in.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Okay, he's in. He probably's in right now if he
- 13:27Speaker 3: stopped pitching. But he's got two more years. If he's healthy,
- 13:30Speaker 3: he's gonna be over three thousand strikeouts. This shouldn't even
- 13:32Speaker 3: be a conversation.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks for the layup question. But what cap would
- 13:36Speaker 1: he wear in the Hall of Fame? Maybe a Braves
- 13:39Speaker 1: cap if he keeps this up the next couple of years, World.
- 13:43Speaker 6: Series with the Red Sox.
- 13:45Speaker 3: Yeah, he wouldn't go Red Sox so just because we
- 13:48Speaker 3: asked him. Remember he didn't pitch well enough long enough
- 13:51Speaker 3: there went. He'd still have more years with the White Sox.
- 13:55Speaker 3: I think he might go in as a White sock.
- 13:56Speaker 3: You guys are gonna laugh for root.
- 13:59Speaker 4: In four years, four years of top six Cy Young
- 14:03Speaker 4: voting with the White Sox. I think it's a white Sox.
- 14:06Speaker 4: I think I think it's a white Sox. Now the
- 14:09Speaker 4: Braves win a World Series. The next two years, he
- 14:12Speaker 4: gets up there again.
- 14:13Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 14:13Speaker 4: We have to We'll have to go back to the
- 14:15Speaker 4: very first interview and see who asked him if he's
- 14:18Speaker 4: a Hall of famer, because I thought then he was
- 14:20Speaker 4: a Hall of Famer, and I think there was a debate.
- 14:23Speaker 6: I think he's put the debate to bed and astly.
- 14:27Speaker 5: Yeah, hey, I asked, right.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Do you know why I asked.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Because I wanted to ask him, and I wanted his
- 14:32Speaker 3: reaction because I knew that he would never say that
- 14:35Speaker 3: he's a Hall of Famer. He just would never do it.
- 14:37Speaker 3: And he didn't. He gave the perfect answer. I'm not yet,
- 14:40Speaker 3: but I need to keep going. And then he goes
- 14:41Speaker 3: out and dominates for two more years and boo. I
- 14:44Speaker 3: mean if he has this average year, which is five
- 14:46Speaker 3: point five war for three more years, I mean that's
- 14:49Speaker 3: almost what that's sixteen and a half more war. It
- 14:52Speaker 3: puts him almost a seventy five war. There's no way
- 14:55Speaker 3: you're keeping him out.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Yeah, he already looks like a lock if he doesn't
- 15:00Speaker 1: play this season, but he looks like he has maybe two,
- 15:05Speaker 1: if not three years left, right because they did hang
- 15:08Speaker 1: a club option around it, And I'm sure if Chris
- 15:11Speaker 1: is feeling good, then he'll go out for another season.
- 15:14Speaker 2: He's thirty six. Could he pitch at thirty nine? Sure,
- 15:16Speaker 2: it's definitely possible.
- 15:17Speaker 1: And smart move here by Atlanta because what they do
- 15:20Speaker 1: is they've got Sale locked in now. They've got them
- 15:22Speaker 1: locked in for next year. If the stuff does fall
- 15:25Speaker 1: off or if an injury hits him again, they've got
- 15:28Speaker 1: the club option. So it's like, hey, you want another
- 15:30Speaker 1: guaranteed year close to thirty million bucks, cool, let's do it.
- 15:34Speaker 2: But give us the option to.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Keep you for one more season after that and get
- 15:37Speaker 1: that benefit of going.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Year to year.
- 15:40Speaker 1: So Chris Sale, Atlanta brave. He's loving it there, clearly.
- 15:44Speaker 6: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 15:45Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 15:47Speaker 6: That's what he said.
- 15:48Speaker 2: That's what he said. Woo peeko.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Armstrong's bringing the smoke this quote. I love Chicago more
- 15:58Speaker 1: and more. People are great. They give a shit. They
- 16:02Speaker 1: aren't just baseball fans who go to the game like
- 16:04Speaker 1: Dodgers fans to take pictures and whatever, they're paying attention.
- 16:09Speaker 2: They care. He's from LA.
- 16:16Speaker 6: He's feeling good at the plate. He's feeling good at
- 16:18Speaker 6: the plate.
- 16:19Speaker 4: Good for him, Like we heard a lot from PCA
- 16:22Speaker 4: last year in the first half, and then he scuffled.
- 16:24Speaker 4: We didn't hear as much. To me, this is just
- 16:27Speaker 4: his personality, Like, let his personality shine through. He doesn't
- 16:32Speaker 4: need to be a fan of Dodgers fans, like, that's
- 16:36Speaker 4: not his team. It's not going to cost him anything
- 16:38Speaker 4: in free agency. He didn't say anything bad about the
- 16:42Speaker 4: organization or he'll never play there. He's saying how it is.
- 16:46Speaker 4: And I think, you know, some people would disagree with
- 16:49Speaker 4: him about Cubs fans. Lee ilia as Aj would love
- 16:53Speaker 4: to reiterate anytime that he can. You know, I think
- 16:57Speaker 4: there's there's an affinity for the way he plays in
- 17:01Speaker 4: that city. They love him, they love us the way
- 17:04Speaker 4: he runs around the outfield, and I think, you know,
- 17:08Speaker 4: he feels that connection.
- 17:09Speaker 6: So good for him for saying it.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Also important note Pete Crow Armstrong's father is a Cubs fan,
- 17:18Speaker 1: and he had two rules for Pete growing up. You
- 17:20Speaker 1: do not like the Dodgers. You do not like the Cardinals.
- 17:24Speaker 1: And we're gonna flow in some comments as we're chatting.
- 17:27Speaker 1: We've already had this become the topic of the day
- 17:30Speaker 1: in the live chat. I have read every comment so
- 17:33Speaker 1: far today up until the last minute or so, and
- 17:35Speaker 1: there's a lot of back and forth. Some fans like, hey,
- 17:38Speaker 1: he grew up going to Dodger games, but not being
- 17:40Speaker 1: a fan of the Dodgers, so maybe he does have
- 17:43Speaker 1: some experience. But I'm like, at the same time, he
- 17:45Speaker 1: doesn't like the Dodgers. And there are tens of thousands
- 17:48Speaker 1: of fans at games for the Dodgers and the Cubs,
- 17:52Speaker 1: and I can add the Yankees.
- 17:54Speaker 2: To this list. And here is a separation factor for me, Kratz.
- 17:59Speaker 2: What's that Are you in?
- 18:00Speaker 1: Who are you around in the front row, in the
- 18:04Speaker 1: seats where corporations give them out to a different client
- 18:08Speaker 1: every day, or their suits showing up for food, vibes,
- 18:12Speaker 1: a good time, the artie moreno style, or are you
- 18:15Speaker 1: in sections or near people. I'm not saying there aren't
- 18:18Speaker 1: people that are diehards that sit up close, but you
- 18:20Speaker 1: could be around people that are spending as much as
- 18:23Speaker 1: they can to go to the games. They watch every game,
- 18:25Speaker 1: they consume every show on this network, right covering their
- 18:29Speaker 1: particular team.
- 18:30Speaker 2: A little bit of it is luck of the draw.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Where were you going and who are you seeing?
- 18:33Speaker 5: Now?
- 18:34Speaker 1: Might you see a few more people snapping a selfie
- 18:37Speaker 1: or a photo of themselves in Los Angeles?
- 18:40Speaker 2: In general?
- 18:40Speaker 1: I think just about anyone can be clear about that one.
- 18:44Speaker 1: That's more of an LA thing. In general, it's the creator,
- 18:47Speaker 1: influencer capital of the United States. I would say second, third, fourth,
- 18:53Speaker 1: probably looking at like a New York Miami, that would be.
- 18:58Speaker 2: A pretty solid top three to start.
- 19:00Speaker 1: So sure, do you think that maybe some people are
- 19:03Speaker 1: spending a little extra time taking photos somewhere? I guess
- 19:06Speaker 1: has it become a tourist destination out there?
- 19:09Speaker 2: Absolutely right?
- 19:10Speaker 1: Shoheo Tani could be the best player of all time
- 19:13Speaker 1: in baseball history. There are people that come from all
- 19:16Speaker 1: over the globe to see him and to take pictures
- 19:20Speaker 1: around being at Dodger Stadium. So all of these things
- 19:23Speaker 1: can be true. But to call out the dedication of
- 19:26Speaker 1: Dodger fans, to me, sounds like someone who wants to
- 19:30Speaker 1: spark up a rivalry, and I'm all for that. Go
- 19:33Speaker 1: to LA, You're going to get booed for the rest
- 19:36Speaker 1: of your life. Out there and back that shit up.
- 19:39Speaker 4: All right, two comments because of one. I'm not even
- 19:42Speaker 4: sure which comment strolled across the street the screen. But
- 19:47Speaker 4: when he gets to Chavez Ravine, it said, can't wait
- 19:49Speaker 4: for his first step back. He's not going to get
- 19:51Speaker 4: booed that much, because very few fans actually make it
- 19:54Speaker 4: to the Dodger games for first for the leadoff hitter
- 19:57Speaker 4: of the game. Because I don't just try and all
- 20:00Speaker 4: that stuff. But I play with a guy you probably
- 20:03Speaker 4: remember him, Scott Dianna Navarro. He played in LA and
- 20:06Speaker 4: he played in Chicago. And he said, more celebrities come
- 20:11Speaker 4: through the Cubs clubhouse then come through the Dodgers clubhouse.
- 20:16Speaker 4: And I thought that was interesting. He said, very sneaky
- 20:19Speaker 4: people want to A lot of celebrities come through Chicago
- 20:22Speaker 4: and they want to go to Cubs games. He said,
- 20:25Speaker 4: a lot of celebrities live in LA. He said, so
- 20:28Speaker 4: it's not as much like that, like team interaction with
- 20:33Speaker 4: the celebrities, they still have it because now the Dodgers
- 20:36Speaker 4: themselves are celebrities, Like they don't need celebrities coming in.
- 20:40Speaker 4: But I thought it was interesting that he said that.
- 20:42Speaker 4: And so this is good nature, fun, this is this
- 20:46Speaker 4: is this is it. If he gets some booze, remember
- 20:48Speaker 4: what AJ said, nobody booze.
- 20:52Speaker 6: Nobody.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Although if anybody on the Cubs said this, they could
- 21:00Speaker 1: be the twenty sixth man on the roster, they would
- 21:03Speaker 1: probably still get booed. This kind of quote does really.
- 21:07Speaker 4: They forget it. They forget it. I promise I wasn't nobody.
- 21:12Speaker 4: I got in Joey Vado's face where Cubs were Red's
- 21:15Speaker 4: camp today. I got in his face stirring at Bat.
- 21:19Speaker 4: I got booed my next step bat, and I think
- 21:22Speaker 4: my next step Bat, I got a hit. Nobody even
- 21:24Speaker 4: said a word. Nobody boo They forgot, They forget nobody's
- 21:28Speaker 4: That's what happens. PCA goes and makes another All Star team.
- 21:32Speaker 4: He comes into LA, runs all around center field making
- 21:35Speaker 4: diving catches. They're gonna keep remembering them. People are gonna
- 21:38Speaker 4: be like, why are we booing this guy? And they'll
- 21:41Speaker 4: be like, well, I don't even know everyone else is
- 21:44Speaker 4: doing it.
- 21:45Speaker 2: He said, we're in our phones too much. Everyone's in
- 21:49Speaker 2: their phones too much.
- 21:50Speaker 6: He said, we're on our phones. What hu uh?
- 21:54Speaker 2: Fly ball? Foull ball.
- 21:58Speaker 1: AJ has talked often about how it is fun to
- 22:02Speaker 1: be a heel. He's right now running around and grabbing
- 22:04Speaker 1: more players for us to chat with at Red's camp.
- 22:07Speaker 1: But AJ has always believed in this. He has preached
- 22:10Speaker 1: this to current players and Kratz. He has talked about
- 22:14Speaker 1: this during his career. There were times when he loved
- 22:17Speaker 1: being a heel. And if you don't know what a
- 22:19Speaker 1: heel means, you can look it up right now on
- 22:22Speaker 1: your favorite search platform.
- 22:23Speaker 2: But PCA is gonna have fun with this.
- 22:28Speaker 1: It does bring a little attention and a little juice
- 22:31Speaker 1: to a random day in spring training where.
- 22:33Speaker 2: There's not much else going on, so it's fun.
- 22:37Speaker 1: The one thing I think people have to do is
- 22:39Speaker 1: just not take it too seriously, you know. I mean,
- 22:43Speaker 1: if you want to look up John Rockers quotes from
- 22:46Speaker 1: back in the day describing his New York City experience,
- 22:50Speaker 1: you can take things personally. On this front, he's saying
- 22:53Speaker 1: that they're not as dedicated as Cubs fans.
- 22:55Speaker 2: I think that's good, clean fun.
- 22:57Speaker 4: But everybody has a different sense of coffee at this
- 23:00Speaker 4: point in the year. And the Cubs. Were they a
- 23:04Speaker 4: bat short last year, were they a bullpen arms short
- 23:07Speaker 4: last year?
- 23:08Speaker 6: We'll never know.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Is anybody saying they're better than the Dodgers. Now, No,
- 23:13Speaker 4: are they closer to the Dodgers than they were last year?
- 23:17Speaker 6: Yes?
- 23:17Speaker 4: I think so. So there's some confidence he didn't just
- 23:20Speaker 4: come up with this on his own. Like you know,
- 23:22Speaker 4: these dudes are talking. They're not talking about beating the
- 23:25Speaker 4: Pirates and the Reds and the Brewers.
- 23:29Speaker 6: They're talking about winning the World Series.
- 23:31Speaker 4: And I know that that might be in a lot
- 23:34Speaker 4: of clubhouses, but I think there's dudes in there that
- 23:36Speaker 4: believe it, and that conversation is happening. And to win
- 23:39Speaker 4: the World Series, you got to beat the Dodgers.
- 23:44Speaker 1: We're going to get into all of the nitty gritty
- 23:46Speaker 1: details about why you should switch to Mint Mobile, but
- 23:49Speaker 1: I brought a special guest in for this one to
- 23:51Speaker 1: alert you that you might be paying way too.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Much for your wireless bill. Eric Kratz, Can you give
- 23:57Speaker 2: me the bullpen dugout phone? Please?
- 24:02Speaker 4: Lu lu lu lu lu lulu. You want to pay

- 24:38Speaker 1: network is busy. Capable device required, availability, speed and coverage
- 24:42Speaker 1: varies see mintmobile dot com. If I'm cubs Brass and
- 24:47Speaker 1: I see a nice first half from Picrow Armstrong might
- 24:50Speaker 1: want to have a little conversation about an extension. I'm
- 24:52Speaker 1: not saying that one quote is going to create that,
- 24:55Speaker 1: but clearly this guy wants to stay here. He just
- 24:58Speaker 1: called out a team and he does not want to
- 25:01Speaker 1: be a part of the Dodgers in the future. Now,
- 25:02Speaker 1: there are plenty of other teams that he could sign
- 25:04Speaker 1: with one day in free agency.
- 25:06Speaker 2: No, you think so. You think you.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Put something like this out there before free agency and
- 25:11Speaker 1: then end up signing with the Dodgers, hears from now,
- 25:13Speaker 1: I don't think so.
- 25:14Speaker 2: I mean, he doesn't like and he likes the Cubs.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I know he called out the fans, but still, if
- 25:19Speaker 1: I'm Pete crow Armstrong, I'm trying to get an extension, and.
- 25:22Speaker 2: I think a quote like this does throw a hint
- 25:24Speaker 2: out there.
- 25:24Speaker 1: I'm not saying that he had this premeditated and said,
- 25:27Speaker 1: you know what, I'm going to call out Dodger fans
- 25:29Speaker 1: and talk about how much I love Cubs fans and
- 25:32Speaker 1: maybe that'll turn into an extension for me. There already
- 25:35Speaker 1: have been extension conversations from last year. He might get
- 25:38Speaker 1: something done in spring training krats. So I'm just throwing
- 25:41Speaker 1: this out there for Cubs brass. If you believe in
- 25:44Speaker 1: the player, he clearly believes in you and loves you.
- 25:47Speaker 2: He grew up a freaking Cubs fan in LA. Locked
- 25:50Speaker 2: that extension up.
- 25:52Speaker 6: I hear you, I hear you that extension.
- 25:53Speaker 4: I think I think it's tough because he believes he's
- 25:57Speaker 4: the first half player there feel for a fearful of
- 26:00Speaker 4: the second half player. His defense is worth an extension.
- 26:05Speaker 4: His offense in the first half was worth an extension.
- 26:08Speaker 4: How do you value somebody like that? You go eight years?
- 26:12Speaker 4: Does his defense and speed wear down? Does he even
- 26:15Speaker 4: want an extension? Because you know he came from money.
- 26:19Speaker 4: He was, you know, higher pick he signed. Like, there's
- 26:22Speaker 4: a lot that goes into that extension talk. So I
- 26:26Speaker 4: think the Cubs need to do it. I'll be honest.
- 26:28Speaker 4: Paid the man as many.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I think he wants an extension. He might have
- 26:33Speaker 1: some money, he doesn't have that kind of money. Plus,
- 26:35Speaker 1: the defense isn't going to slump. He's the best center
- 26:38Speaker 1: fielder in baseball right now.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Defensively it looks like he'll be that for quite some time.
- 26:44Speaker 1: So good for PCA throwing a little juice in there
- 26:47Speaker 1: for the Cubs Dodgers rivalry this year? What about the
- 26:50Speaker 1: Dodgers Mets Rivalryjan Soto coming after show, Hey o Tani,
- 26:56Speaker 1: this one was a little more playful, or at least
- 26:58Speaker 1: it appeared that way. The quote from him on Otani,
- 27:02Speaker 1: he better keep doing what he's doing because I'm coming
- 27:05Speaker 1: Sodo talking about Otani. I already know what Kratz is
- 27:08Speaker 1: going to say. Good freaking luck, because you don't pitch.
- 27:11Speaker 1: So if Otani keeps doing what he's doing, you have
- 27:14Speaker 1: almost no chance at an MVP. Not if Otani's putting
- 27:18Speaker 1: up numbers. If he just replicates what he did, even
- 27:20Speaker 1: last year, and I think he'll pitch more than he
- 27:22Speaker 1: did last year. He's auto MVP for the next few
- 27:26Speaker 1: years if he puts up right, you know, one fifty
- 27:30Speaker 1: ohps plus and he's dhing just about every day, and
- 27:33Speaker 1: then he gives you what fifteen plus starts really is
- 27:38Speaker 1: all it probably takes to keep racking MVPs and have
- 27:41Speaker 1: such a clear distinct advantage over someone. Do you maybe
- 27:45Speaker 1: have a chance if you're an all around player, I guess,
- 27:47Speaker 1: And I know Soto added the stolen bases to his
- 27:50Speaker 1: game last year, but he is not going to be
- 27:53Speaker 1: an elite defender, and that will knock a couple points
- 27:55Speaker 1: off the old war number in the MVP voting.
- 28:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean he had a higher war than Bryce
- 28:02Speaker 4: Harper the year that Juan Soto could could have won
- 28:06Speaker 4: the MVP, but Bryce won it that year and a
- 28:09Speaker 4: few more homers like if you're just comparing, and I
- 28:12Speaker 4: think sometimes like a lazy argument as you compare their
- 28:15Speaker 4: hitting and you're like, well, I think Wan probably brings
- 28:18Speaker 4: a little bit more to the plate. I wouldn't even
- 28:21Speaker 4: sit there and argue with you. I think Wan's ops
- 28:25Speaker 4: last year was lower, but I would say Wan's coming
- 28:29Speaker 4: into what even baseball pundits, baseball front offices call your prime.
- 28:35Speaker 4: I think your prime can stretch way deeper into your career.
- 28:39Speaker 4: But Wan's coming into his prime, and let's say prime
- 28:42Speaker 4: is going to be his next five years.
- 28:44Speaker 6: Wan's going to have to continue to improve.
- 28:46Speaker 4: Unfortunately, we don't know much about like Tommy John surgery
- 28:50Speaker 4: or internal bracing, which show Hey got. Wan, just like
- 28:54Speaker 4: you said at the beginning, does not have a chance
- 28:57Speaker 4: to win the MVP. If show Hey stays healthy, show
- 29:01Speaker 4: Hey will not have as good as hitting numbers. If
- 29:04Speaker 4: he pitches, if he makes twenty five starts in a year,
- 29:07Speaker 4: it's just he's there's just gonna be some type of
- 29:09Speaker 4: drop off that is not going to allow show Hey
- 29:12Speaker 4: to have the ridiculous, ridiculous fifty to fifty seasons like
- 29:16Speaker 4: he has. So Swan's gonna have to do. Wan Soto
- 29:19Speaker 4: is gonna have to do something historic to beat show
- 29:23Speaker 4: Hey out. And until show He's not pitching in a season,
- 29:27Speaker 4: I just don't see how anybody else wins it.
- 29:37Speaker 1: In the Weeds Engineered by Fast mol where industry meets innovation,
- 29:42Speaker 1: We've got some quotes and we want to do a
- 29:45Speaker 1: deeper dive on Pete Alonzo exiting the Mets and now
- 29:49Speaker 1: making an impact with the Orioles from the jump. I
- 29:52Speaker 1: know it's only spring training, but we'll get to all
- 29:54Speaker 1: of that. Let's start with Daryl Strawberry. Here's a guy
- 29:58Speaker 1: who was met and then eventually left to be a
- 30:02Speaker 1: Dodger through free agency after the nineteen ninety season. He
- 30:07Speaker 1: was shocked and says Pete will regret leaving the Mets
- 30:12Speaker 1: for the Orioles. Here's the quote from Daryl. I was
- 30:15Speaker 1: really shocked that Pete would leave New York for Baltimore.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Pete could have broken all the records and could have
- 30:20Speaker 1: been on top of every offensive category for this organization.
- 30:24Speaker 1: And then sometimes when you don't see that and realize
- 30:26Speaker 1: how important that is, one day he's going to wake
- 30:29Speaker 1: up just like I did and regret you didn't stick
- 30:33Speaker 1: where you are at.
- 30:36Speaker 2: He said.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Also, the biggest mistake I saw was after they lost
- 30:40Speaker 1: in Miami. That was the end of the season, when
- 30:41Speaker 1: the Mets blew their wild card lead, that Pete opted out.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Daryl said, I think if he just waited and said, okay,
- 30:48Speaker 1: I'll stay at that, So stay in, don't opt out
- 30:51Speaker 1: of your contract and then ask the Mets for four
- 30:53Speaker 1: more years something like that. They could have worked it out.
- 30:56Speaker 1: He thinks also that both sides could have fought harder
- 30:59Speaker 1: in the situation. Now, remember years back, Pete did get
- 31:03Speaker 1: an extension offer from the Mets, and while you're chatting,
- 31:05Speaker 1: Crats'll pull it up to give you the exact number.
- 31:07Speaker 1: It was a nice number, but Pete ended up making
- 31:09Speaker 1: more on the free agent market. The Mets in the
- 31:13Speaker 1: David Stearns era was not as into Pete. I think
- 31:16Speaker 1: that's pretty obvious, and Steve Cohen has spoken recently about
- 31:20Speaker 1: how he is paying David Sterns a lot of money
- 31:23Speaker 1: to make these types of calls. So it was under
- 31:26Speaker 1: the give me the Last GM Billy Eppler era where
- 31:30Speaker 1: they threw the.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Extension Pete's way.
- 31:33Speaker 1: He said no, he did the longer deal, but really
- 31:37Speaker 1: a one year deal, the opt out deal. Played this
- 31:39Speaker 1: out and then hops over to Baltimore. I don't think
- 31:42Speaker 1: it's fair for Darryl to call out Pete during this
- 31:45Speaker 1: particular offseason when the Mets weren't in sniffing distance of
- 31:49Speaker 1: what Baltimore was throwing his way and valuing him at.
- 31:54Speaker 4: The key number here is two times the Mets really
- 31:58Speaker 4: weren't that interested in locking up this player in Tee Alonso,
- 32:03Speaker 4: who Daryl Strawberry is saying shouldn't have left. Not sure
- 32:08Speaker 4: why he left, don't make the same mistake that I made.
- 32:12Speaker 6: Dal Strawberry. For kids who don't know, you need to
- 32:15Speaker 6: look up his numbers. And when he.
- 32:17Speaker 4: Left New York it was a steep drop off. There
- 32:22Speaker 4: are other things that went into that. You never know.
- 32:25Speaker 4: You know how things are going, but you also never
- 32:27Speaker 4: know as a free agent what it's going to be
- 32:29Speaker 4: like somewhere else. And I'm sure Daryl left. I don't
- 32:32Speaker 4: know the exact reasoning, but I'm sure he left for
- 32:35Speaker 4: a big contract. And if you're not loved where you're
- 32:39Speaker 4: at where Pete was because they went through the free
- 32:42Speaker 4: agency dance twice and they weren't willing to extend him.
- 32:46Speaker 4: I think Pete kind of knew going into the off season. Look,
- 32:50Speaker 4: they're not they're not that into me, Like, I don't
- 32:54Speaker 4: see why they would change their tone. I've had an
- 32:56Speaker 4: incredible career. I'm the career leader in home runs here.
- 33:00Speaker 4: The fans love me. They just weren't that into them,
- 33:04Speaker 4: you know, would they have finally matched the offer. Maybe,
- 33:08Speaker 4: but did he want to stay?
- 33:10Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 33:10Speaker 4: He seems pretty happy every time we've talked to Pete,
- 33:13Speaker 4: every time you see something with him, and like the
- 33:16Speaker 4: orange really suits him, and I think it's unfair to say, ah,
- 33:23Speaker 4: you know what, he should have just stayed. Darryl is
- 33:26Speaker 4: part of the group of Mets, that old school, that
- 33:30Speaker 4: old crew, that old group that won the World Series.
- 33:33Speaker 4: I've never seen more of a staunch group of guys
- 33:37Speaker 4: who are like, we love the Mets. You know why,
- 33:41Speaker 4: because the Mets have kept him around. They won a
- 33:43Speaker 4: World Series, and the Mets have loved those guys, and
- 33:45Speaker 4: they love the Mets and Mets fans. It's a reciprocal relationship.
- 33:49Speaker 4: It's a give and take relationship. And those guys are
- 33:53Speaker 4: true blue Mets fans and they were just ex Mets players.
- 33:57Speaker 4: I mean, you can go down the list of all
- 33:59Speaker 4: the guys and Daryl's one of them. And you never
- 34:02Speaker 4: hear this from front office guys who are staunch Met fans.
- 34:07Speaker 4: But these guys are not really front office, but they're
- 34:10Speaker 4: not coaches. They're just strong, strong fans of the Mets.
- 34:15Speaker 4: And so good for him for saying it. Like he
- 34:18Speaker 4: wanted to keep Pete around because he's useful the front office,
- 34:21Speaker 4: who's who's delving out the contracts, did not. They feel
- 34:26Speaker 4: like Jorge Polanco and other use of their money in Boba,
- 34:29Speaker 4: Schett is a more useful use of their money. And
- 34:34Speaker 4: we'll see how it works out.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Twenty twenty three, the contract extension offer from the Mets
- 34:41Speaker 1: with seven years, one hundred and fifty three million dollars.
- 34:46Speaker 1: If you count the seven year stretch as the prior
- 34:52Speaker 1: too seasons for Pete plus the five year deal he
- 34:54Speaker 1: just signed with the Orioles, that's seven years, two hundred
- 34:58Speaker 1: and five million dollars.
- 35:00Speaker 2: It's a big difference.
- 35:02Speaker 1: I'd love to know when that was in twenty three, right,
- 35:06Speaker 1: I think if he had an opportunity to get the
- 35:11Speaker 1: seven to one point fifty three or to get I
- 35:13Speaker 1: don't want to put the same number out there because
- 35:14Speaker 1: they are very far apart. But my point is in
- 35:16Speaker 1: the last two years, from what we know, he didn't
- 35:18Speaker 1: get anything close to even four or five years on
- 35:22Speaker 1: a deal offer. It was like two maybe three. So
- 35:27Speaker 1: they didn't they put him in a place where he
- 35:29Speaker 1: had to say no.
- 35:31Speaker 5: For sure.
- 35:32Speaker 4: And the part and the part where Darryl said, where
- 35:34Speaker 4: Daryl Strawberry said, you know, he should have accepted the
- 35:38Speaker 4: He should have accepted the or not taken the opt
- 35:40Speaker 4: out and then negotiated it. What in the previous offseason
- 35:45Speaker 4: would have indicated to Pete. Oh, yeah, they'll definitely give
- 35:50Speaker 4: me an extension. They could have given an extension the
- 35:53Speaker 4: entire year. They could have given him the five years
- 35:56Speaker 4: that he wanted the year before. They could have done that.
- 35:59Speaker 4: And I'm not saying it's again it's bad that Stern's
- 36:03Speaker 4: doesn't want to go past go go that long. It
- 36:05Speaker 4: doesn't want those long term deals. It's just what they want.
- 36:09Speaker 4: So you're gonna not be able to retain certain players.
- 36:12Speaker 4: And to me, Peede Alonzo was becoming a franchise type
- 36:17Speaker 4: of player, not just franchise for when he's there, but
- 36:19Speaker 4: franchise forever type of player. And they're willing to move on.
- 36:24Speaker 4: Good for Pete for being willing to move on and
- 36:27Speaker 4: going away from a place that he was comfortable in.
- 36:33Speaker 2: Yeah, Orioles value him more. It is what it is.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Yeah, So let me explain one reason why the Orioles
- 36:43Speaker 1: really love Pee Alonso.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Right now. They feel like they made a mistake.
- 36:47Speaker 1: We have many quotes coming out of Orioles camp over
- 36:50Speaker 1: the last few days about how they were missing something.
- 36:54Speaker 1: They brought up an exciting young core that didn't really
- 36:58Speaker 1: have the Pete Alonso and there are a number of
- 37:01Speaker 1: quotes from different stories. Ken Rosenthal's story in the Athletic.
- 37:05Speaker 1: There's a Baltimore Banner story, so here's Ken's story. To
- 37:09Speaker 1: get the most out of their young core, the Oriols
- 37:11Speaker 1: had to bring in outside veteran help. Michae Elias was
- 37:16Speaker 1: quoted saying, looking back at the last couple of years,
- 37:19Speaker 1: I think for our young position player group, it would
- 37:21Speaker 1: have been helpful for them to have somebody accomplished from
- 37:23Speaker 1: outside the organization who wasn't part of our rebuild, wasn't
- 37:26Speaker 1: an Oriols draft pick, wasn't an Oriols development story, come
- 37:30Speaker 1: in and just absorb a lot of the attention on
- 37:32Speaker 1: the team speak for the team. Jordan Westburg telling the
- 37:35Speaker 1: Baltimore Banner, I do think it would be good to
- 37:36Speaker 1: have a personality going forward, whatever adjective you want to use, polarizing, loud, boisterous, whatever,
- 37:41Speaker 1: but just something different. I think it would be beneficial
- 37:45Speaker 1: freeze people to be themselves, and then I'll finish with
- 37:49Speaker 1: Tony Manslino, who's now the bench coach for Walt Weiss
- 37:52Speaker 1: over in Atlanta, he said, because he was the interim
- 37:57Speaker 1: manager for the Orioles after Brandon Hyde was fired. He said,
- 38:00Speaker 1: just recently, in the past twenty four hours, we were
- 38:02Speaker 1: asking a bunch of players in years two, three, and
- 38:04Speaker 1: four to be superstars. And the reality is nobody has
- 38:06Speaker 1: a bunch of players in years two, three and four
- 38:08Speaker 1: who are superstars. He's not saying you can't be a
- 38:10Speaker 1: superstar earlier in your career, but to rack that many
- 38:12Speaker 1: players and ask them to lead the team.
- 38:14Speaker 2: You always hear this from people.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Hey, if you want a total all around team, it
- 38:19Speaker 1: can't just be all of one thing. You need to
- 38:21Speaker 1: have the blend. And it seemed like they were just
- 38:24Speaker 1: flowing with what they tanked to create and that was great,
- 38:29Speaker 1: but they didn't add the icing on the cake. That's
- 38:31Speaker 1: what they tried to do this past offseason. It seemed
- 38:33Speaker 1: like they did that well. One more quote from Mansolino,
- 38:36Speaker 1: by the way, he goes being here talking about Atlanta
- 38:39Speaker 1: coming out of this situation, I just came from and
- 38:41Speaker 1: I don't say this lightly.
- 38:43Speaker 2: I feel like.
- 38:44Speaker 1: He as in the Braves Alexandropolis, Walt Weiss specifically, kind
- 38:48Speaker 1: of rescued me in a lot of ways and got
- 38:50Speaker 1: me over into this place and working under him, and
- 38:52Speaker 1: I couldn't be happier.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Whoa that was?
- 38:57Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I mean eh, Tony Tony said, said it
- 39:02Speaker 4: with his chest. I'm gonna go back to the first
- 39:04Speaker 4: thing before we hit that part of it, Tony Manzelino
- 39:07Speaker 4: talking about it. Michaelias now like he must have gone
- 39:11Speaker 4: back and watched some of the old FT's, the old
- 39:15Speaker 4: FT episodes that we This is what we've talked about.
- 39:18Speaker 4: Was Michaelias the guy to be able to take this
- 39:21Speaker 4: team because of theirs very much parallels with the Astros
- 39:27Speaker 4: whom Michaelias worked for and the Orioles as they came up,
- 39:31Speaker 4: Like is he able to take this team to where
- 39:34Speaker 4: the Astros were going? Well, the Astros went out and
- 39:38Speaker 4: made some trades for some for some guys that were
- 39:41Speaker 4: getting to the end of expiring contracts. They were afraid
- 39:45Speaker 4: to go to get that veteran and now might you know, hey,
- 39:50Speaker 4: you know what, now we got to do it. So
- 39:52Speaker 4: it was tough to do. It was tough. It was
- 39:54Speaker 4: tough for Michaelias to do it, or maybe he just
- 39:57Speaker 4: didn't think the team was quite ready, or maybe the
- 39:59Speaker 4: owners change. There's a lot of things that were going
- 40:02Speaker 4: on in there, but I'm glad that they've noticed it
- 40:04Speaker 4: now that hey, you know what a veteran leader. Veteran
- 40:07Speaker 4: leaders different personalities, and it's not all just the same
- 40:11Speaker 4: young guys, because Michaellias saw it as well, Josel Tuve
- 40:15Speaker 4: Correa and Bregman and Springer, they were all young guys
- 40:20Speaker 4: that came through the organization and we won a World
- 40:23Speaker 4: Series with those guys like but they also did it
- 40:26Speaker 4: with a few veteran add ons that they had on
- 40:29Speaker 4: that team. Charlie Morton started Game seven like they had
- 40:33Speaker 4: Brian McCann behind the ditch. I think they have McCann
- 40:36Speaker 4: that year or Dan mccannon twenty two or twenty one, anyway,
- 40:41Speaker 4: whatever it is, they added on. And so that's what
- 40:44Speaker 4: the teams need to do now. The Tony Manzolino quotes
- 40:49Speaker 4: that he got that he got saved from out of there,
- 40:53Speaker 4: I don't know. Rarely do you hear Rarely do you
- 40:56Speaker 4: hear guys talk like this, So there had to be
- 41:01Speaker 4: something that he didn't agree with, but if I'm not mistaken,
- 41:05Speaker 4: he was the interim manager, and when he became the
- 41:10Speaker 4: intern manager, his exact quote was, AH, you know, I
- 41:15Speaker 4: don't know that I'm really gonna change anything when the
- 41:19Speaker 4: team was struggling. If you really want to be that manager, like,
- 41:23Speaker 4: that's your chance, that's your chance to put your stamp,
- 41:27Speaker 4: your footprint on trying to change something. And so what
- 41:33Speaker 4: all happened, what all went down there, I'm sure we'll
- 41:35Speaker 4: hear more about it here in the next few weeks year.
- 41:39Speaker 6: While he's a Brace coach.
- 41:41Speaker 1: I think it's tough to throw a quote like that
- 41:43Speaker 1: out there. And I'll read the quote again for AJ,
- 41:46Speaker 1: who's back with us here the rest of the way.
- 41:48Speaker 1: Tony Mansolino, interim manager for the Orioles last year, taking
- 41:53Speaker 1: over after Brandon Hyde.
- 41:54Speaker 2: AJ.
- 41:55Speaker 1: He said, being here coming out of this situation that
- 41:58Speaker 1: he just came from, and I don't say this lightly.
- 42:00Speaker 1: I feel like he kind of rescued me in a
- 42:01Speaker 1: lot of ways and got me over into this place
- 42:03Speaker 1: and working under him, and I couldn't be happier.
- 42:05Speaker 2: That was Tony talking.
- 42:05Speaker 1: About Walt Weiss and the Braves rescuing him from the Orioles.
- 42:10Speaker 1: To me, when you use that word, and you also
- 42:13Speaker 1: said within the quote, I don't say this lightly, that
- 42:16Speaker 1: means there was some shit going down and we haven't
- 42:18Speaker 1: not really heard about anything to that extent. It looked
- 42:21Speaker 1: like a team that were underperformed. To me, this might
- 42:25Speaker 1: have a slice of a front office disconnect. And again
- 42:28Speaker 1: I'm playing conspiracy theory game where a show that's what
- 42:31Speaker 1: we do. I don't think there were like personality issues
- 42:35Speaker 1: within the Orioles. I feel like we would have heard
- 42:37Speaker 1: about that one of us three, or there would have
- 42:39Speaker 1: been something out there.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Felt like a.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Team that underperformed, that didn't stack their coaching staff with
- 42:46Speaker 1: enough pitching depth, and as we've been talking about now
- 42:48Speaker 1: for the last several minutes, was relying on all young
- 42:51Speaker 1: core players without a Pete Alonso to take away attention
- 42:55Speaker 1: and to lead the charge.
- 42:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Also, maybe he's a little mad at it and get
- 43:00Speaker 3: the job after he took over. I mean it's always that.
- 43:02Speaker 3: I don't know if you guys talked about that, but
- 43:04Speaker 3: there's always that little, you know, tidbit you have to
- 43:08Speaker 3: throw in there. I'm not saying that that was the
- 43:09Speaker 3: case here at all. I don't know what these were
- 43:12Speaker 3: mentioned of. But yeah, I mean there had to be
- 43:14Speaker 3: a disconnect because I'm sure he wanted to keep that
- 43:16Speaker 3: big league job. So I don't know if he went
- 43:18Speaker 3: to michae Elias and the rest of the front office
- 43:20Speaker 3: and said, hey, this are my thoughts and they disagreed.
- 43:23Speaker 3: But he's if he says he's in a better place,
- 43:24Speaker 3: how about we just say, hey, I'm in a better
- 43:26Speaker 3: place now. It didn't work out in Baltimore and move
- 43:28Speaker 3: on it. Just when you say these things after you're
- 43:30Speaker 3: not hired as the manager or if you're let go
- 43:33Speaker 3: as a player, And listen, we've all been emotional, we've
- 43:35Speaker 3: all been mad, you just sound like you're a little salty, right,
- 43:40Speaker 3: And I don't know, Listen, I wish him nothing but
- 43:43Speaker 3: the best of the braves and I hope everything goes well.
- 43:44Speaker 3: But I don't know, just you just seem a little
- 43:47Speaker 3: salty when you say these things after you let go.
- 43:50Speaker 1: What about Daryl Strawberry's quotes, which we already commented on,
- 43:53Speaker 1: but we can get them from you. Your thoughts on
- 43:56Speaker 1: Strawberry saying that Pete Alnso is going to regret his decision.
- 44:01Speaker 1: The Mets didn't offer anything close to what the Orioles.
- 44:04Speaker 2: Threw his way.
- 44:05Speaker 5: The Mets didn't even make him an offer, did they?
- 44:07Speaker 5: I thought?
- 44:07Speaker 3: I mean I read this this Twitter thread and John
- 44:10Speaker 3: Hayman fired back with You're wrong. They never even made
- 44:12Speaker 3: him an offer. So how how is he gonna go back?
- 44:15Speaker 3: Will you just show up at camp and be like, hey, guys,
- 44:17Speaker 3: I'm back. I don't want to leave here. Listen, Pete
- 44:19Speaker 3: Alonso did that last year. He didn't leave. He came
- 44:21Speaker 3: back on the one year deal with the opt out,
- 44:23Speaker 3: and what do he do? He had another great year
- 44:25Speaker 3: and what the Mets do not offer him another contract?
- 44:28Speaker 3: So what's he supposed to do? Darryl sit there and
- 44:31Speaker 3: just show up at did Port Saint Lucien say guys,
- 44:33Speaker 3: I'm back, and I don't you don't have to pay me,
- 44:34Speaker 3: I'll just play for free. When the Orioles offered him
- 44:37Speaker 3: what he offered, No, like come on, dude, like it's
- 44:40Speaker 3: just just such a this is just such a I
- 44:42Speaker 3: just got my number retired by the Mets. I have
- 44:44Speaker 3: to do whatever they want me to say, like come on,
- 44:46Speaker 3: know the facts before you say that.
- 44:48Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
- 44:49Speaker 1: I don't even think the Mets wanted him to say that.
- 44:51Speaker 1: I think Dyryl doesn't really pay attention to the nuances
- 44:54Speaker 1: of free agency and what is going on in the offseason,
- 44:57Speaker 1: and so a reporter. But yeah, but he's going to
- 45:00Speaker 1: go and he's like, oh, yeah, he's gonna regret that, but.
- 45:03Speaker 3: He's going to go on the side of the Mets,
- 45:04Speaker 3: right because they just retired his no doubt, you know,
- 45:07Speaker 3: So he's gonna always, oh, you know, he's gonna look
- 45:10Speaker 3: back at his choices. And I don't know what his
- 45:12Speaker 3: free agency choices were when he left the Mets. Maybe
- 45:14Speaker 3: you know, they were great obviously, but he made that decision.
- 45:17Speaker 3: That's your decision, Darryl. But if Pete doesn't have the
- 45:20Speaker 3: same opportunity to stay, and I don't know, maybe the
- 45:22Speaker 3: Mets did offer Daryl a great contract Bick. Then again,
- 45:24Speaker 3: I don't remember. That was a long long time ago.
- 45:27Speaker 3: But Pete had a different path because again, the facts
- 45:29Speaker 3: line up, and every reporter that you see says the
- 45:31Speaker 3: Mets never made him an offer, so he can't just
- 45:33Speaker 3: show up. It takes two to tango, they always say,
- 45:36Speaker 3: and you need the team to want you back. The
- 45:38Speaker 3: Orioles wanted Pete Alonzo. Guess where he is. He's in Baltimore.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and it seems like the early impact is strong.
- 45:46Speaker 1: So theme here, you go where you're wanted. And for
- 45:51Speaker 1: the Orioles, I think a lesson was learned and we'll
- 45:53Speaker 1: see if that impact plays out for this season. The
- 45:56Speaker 1: one thing that could hold them back early on this
- 45:58Speaker 1: season is that they're all aready down a couple players.
- 46:01Speaker 1: I think there's enough depth for them to still be
- 46:02Speaker 1: in a good position lineup wise. I know they'll be
- 46:04Speaker 1: without Westbrook for at least a month. Sounds like Holiday
- 46:07Speaker 1: will miss at least a few weeks, but there are
- 46:09Speaker 1: some opportunities for other guys to step up here and
- 46:12Speaker 1: they still added. Like AJ has been mentioning about seventy
- 46:15Speaker 1: home runs with Pete and Taylor Ward, I don't think
- 46:18Speaker 1: offense is going to be the problem.
- 46:19Speaker 2: I have more questions about the.
