- 0:00Speaker 1: Do Do for all your men bastards.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Loving the Big Show podcast, Get Up Even Closer on Instagram,
- 0:09Speaker 2: YouTube and ticktu Off for raw doggets four to seven
- 0:14Speaker 2: every weekday on radio. Heard Care Yeah, get with me.
- 0:20Speaker 2: That's got your That's not cool, Kies, it's a different guy.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I tell you what.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Kezy came in today and it was like he literally
- 0:27Speaker 1: rolled out of bed.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I haven't been in bed. I wish I'd been in bed.
- 0:31Speaker 2: That's the issue.
- 0:32Speaker 3: I had a big night last night, didn't you.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I didn't have a small night.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Talk about that. I look in a little bit sleepy,
- 0:41Speaker 3: a little bit. I've been on the pess. If I'm
- 0:43Speaker 3: honest with you, how do you how very especially when
- 0:47Speaker 3: I know what a big day you hear today, Keys,
- 0:49Speaker 3: huge day, the huge morning that you're head in front
- 0:51Speaker 3: of you today. I hope you didn't put that at risk.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Mate. It went great. Sure, guess what were you having
- 0:57Speaker 2: a few beers last night? I was literally like this
- 0:59Speaker 2: is going to help because tomorrow I have to be tired,
- 1:02Speaker 2: and I was fucking tired.
- 1:03Speaker 3: It was great.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I loved it. It's called method acting. It was so
- 1:07Speaker 2: I was like, here we go. Now I'm gona start
- 1:08Speaker 2: hitting the bttle all the time.
- 1:11Speaker 3: That's where it started for Jason.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I reckon, you know, if they're I always wondered
- 1:16Speaker 1: if there was a scene where you had to be drunk.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Was my attitude was, well, let's get drunk, but of
- 1:22Speaker 1: course directors are like, no, no, obviously we won't do that.
- 1:25Speaker 1: You have to pretend to be drunk.
- 1:27Speaker 2: And the opportunity though, and that's where.
- 1:29Speaker 1: You see the worst acting is when people try and
- 1:32Speaker 1: be drunk, like when you go, I'm very good at
- 1:37Speaker 1: being drunk because what what the big mistake that can make.
- 1:41Speaker 3: To the Lispeg son of Jason is pitting himself on the.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Being drunk, because the big mistake that most people make
- 1:50Speaker 1: when they're pretending to be they're two, they're way over
- 1:53Speaker 1: the top with it. Instead of being slow and just
- 1:56Speaker 1: slightly off kilter, they try to go.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Right. It's like no, no.
- 2:02Speaker 3: The thing with drunk people, Jace as they're trying to
- 2:05Speaker 3: act like they're not drunk.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Correct, thank you.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So he was just trying to cover her app all
- 2:10Speaker 1: the time was that it just then there was a
- 2:14Speaker 1: little bit of it just it's very subtle.
- 2:17Speaker 2: Keysy, So you hungover? Is that the point? No, I'm
- 2:21Speaker 2: not hungover. I had four beers. Oh really, I was
- 2:24Speaker 2: just we were just up late. We didn't get home
- 2:26Speaker 2: till midnight because after how because we had the slippy
- 2:29Speaker 2: Chisher Island screening which my wife used to work for
- 2:31Speaker 2: TV ands in. All of her friends still work there
- 2:33Speaker 2: and invited me just so that i'd bring her as
- 2:36Speaker 2: a plus one and they can hang out with her,
- 2:38Speaker 2: which is fair enough. But then afterwards they we all
- 2:41Speaker 2: meet up at a bar and had a few drinks
- 2:43Speaker 2: for a week while.
- 2:43Speaker 1: They don't have drinks there, No, they did before all right,
- 2:46Speaker 1: yeah before the screening.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Hohen I had a beer? Yes, Jace. Yeah. God.
- 2:53Speaker 1: It's just so much free pess around Magie these days,
- 3:00Speaker 1: missing out massive industry.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I don't think, yeah, you know, you out. The thing
- 3:05Speaker 2: is we're not hitting the purse constantly. There's just a
- 3:08Speaker 2: beer or two here, you know, here or there. You're
- 3:11Speaker 2: not here there yeah here, well there yeah yeah, yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 2: it's a tragedy.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Anyway. How'd it go?
- 3:18Speaker 2: The callback? Yeah? Okay, So for those who don't know,
- 3:22Speaker 2: got an audition? Did the audition? Then you need a
- 3:24Speaker 2: call back, which I believe is about four or five people. Yeah,
- 3:27Speaker 2: might be less I mean, who knows you. And so
- 3:30Speaker 2: that happened and you go back and I was like, shit,
- 3:32Speaker 2: I wonder what we have to do today? Literally the
- 3:33Speaker 2: same thing again, just with a different person, once again
- 3:36Speaker 2: holding a little small handicam. Yeah, you're in front of
- 3:39Speaker 2: a wall. The weird thing about this one is obvious.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I'm not going to give away what it is all
- 3:43Speaker 2: what I had to do, but it involves me being
- 3:45Speaker 2: part of a relationship and a family. And so you
- 3:47Speaker 2: arrive and there's like a a person, mid twenties person there,
- 3:54Speaker 2: and it's just like, this is your partner. Ah, hello,
- 3:57Speaker 2: so we're gonna we love each other, do it? Okay?
- 4:00Speaker 2: And then a lady walked in with her like three
- 4:02Speaker 2: year old daughter, and I was like, that's obviously my daughter,
- 4:06Speaker 2: isn't it. Yeah, And so it was this weird thing
- 4:08Speaker 2: where you were like meeting all the people who you
- 4:10Speaker 2: might be having this family with and then you say,
- 4:12Speaker 2: all right, well, hopefully see you next time after ten
- 4:15Speaker 2: minutes of being there.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it random. Anybody else there in the waiting room.
- 4:21Speaker 2: One dude as I walked out, Yeah, just one dude.
- 4:26Speaker 2: But there was the only other people in the waiting
- 4:28Speaker 2: room where the people going for the like you know,
- 4:29Speaker 2: the parents of the little kid. Yeah, yeah, you know.
- 4:32Speaker 2: So yeah, interesting though, really a good times. It takes
- 4:36Speaker 2: me back afterwards. I was thanks, ey, that's my first
- 4:38Speaker 2: ever callback, and they're oh great, did really well? Yeah,
- 4:41Speaker 2: thanks thanks for that, thanks mate. Yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 1: It is the weird aspects of acting is when you
- 4:50Speaker 1: get those scenarios where you meet a total stranger and
- 4:53Speaker 1: then have to act together and pretend like your lovers
- 4:56Speaker 1: or whatever there, it can be quite strange.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I had one.
- 5:03Speaker 3: What I think it was for hard Courts and just
- 5:07Speaker 3: had to go in. I don't know why. I didn't care,
- 5:09Speaker 3: but I really didn't and I just had so much
- 5:11Speaker 3: fun and got the role. And then that was with
- 5:14Speaker 3: Jackie van Beek. She be my wife. It was my
- 5:17Speaker 3: first time meeting her. And Renee Lyons was the real
- 5:20Speaker 3: estate agent. Right. Yes, it was just all improv of
- 5:23Speaker 3: the whole thing, and none of our dialogue was used
- 5:25Speaker 3: in the edit because it just had music playing over
- 5:27Speaker 3: the top of it. And so it's like our relationship
- 5:29Speaker 3: with our real estate agent over the years as we
- 5:31Speaker 3: went through the years and got bigger homes and moved
- 5:34Speaker 3: around and stuff. But because we knew that we could.
- 5:36Speaker 3: They couldn't hear what we were saying. We were you know,
- 5:39Speaker 3: it wouldn't be used in the air. We'd be saying
- 5:41Speaker 3: the most horrendous ship to each other. Yes, get a Susan,
- 5:45Speaker 3: you're fucking slut A three way. There was a lot
- 5:55Speaker 3: of fun.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Well, this one's like, it's really poorly, it's short.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Let's that going for Yeah?
- 6:00Speaker 2: Sure, So it's just like literally over and then there's
- 6:03Speaker 2: probably five second graphic at the end of it or something.
- 6:05Speaker 2: So literally yes, which is a nice way to start. Yeah,
- 6:08Speaker 2: I don't have to improv, you know, although I'm it's fine,
- 6:13Speaker 2: I'm ready to improve. It's actually really helpful.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Though.
- 6:16Speaker 2: The thing that it's been interesting is when doing something
- 6:20Speaker 2: and you become self aware. Do you guys have that
- 6:23Speaker 2: we are, Yeah, yeah, I can be south aware. Sure.
- 6:27Speaker 2: So it's like, okay, so this time is we're gonna
- 6:29Speaker 2: film that will just be a close up of you,
- 6:31Speaker 2: my female partner, that's just close upon you. It cools
- 6:34Speaker 2: to do the scene. Okay, you do the scene. It
- 6:35Speaker 2: was all right, Chris, Now that's just gonna be close
- 6:36Speaker 2: up on you. So they focus it on you and
- 6:38Speaker 2: you're like okay, actually and then you're just like, sure,
- 6:41Speaker 2: this is the one they'll be like looking at this
- 6:43Speaker 2: is like, yes, I probably do a bit, and this
- 6:45Speaker 2: is all why you're trying to just do it. And
- 6:47Speaker 2: I've been nailing it until they they're focusing on you.
- 6:49Speaker 2: You do your best work off camera.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's yeah, that's something I appreciate. There happens
- 6:55Speaker 2: to me when I'm doing stand up too. When I
- 6:58Speaker 2: was about to start last week when I was to
- 7:00Speaker 2: stand up, just I was about to start, I know
- 7:02Speaker 2: exactly how to start every time, and I just forgot it.
- 7:04Speaker 2: And I was just like, I'm on stage in front
- 7:06Speaker 2: of it people here, and I can't remember ship. Yeah,
- 7:11Speaker 2: and so I just like stood there for like two
- 7:14Speaker 2: seconds and then it came back to me. Those starts.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Oh god, horror. Self Aware The.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Whole Archy Big Show week days from four on Radio
- 7:24Speaker 3: Hierarchy The Warchy Big Show Podcast.
- 7:28Speaker 2: The Mind Blank. Do you do it on the radio?
- 7:32Speaker 2: What becomes self aware when you're about to go live?
- 7:35Speaker 1: No, I often have a mini panic attack before I go,
- 7:40Speaker 1: but just you know, random one that will happened just before.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I go live, like the first break of the show.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Yes, the very first one. Oh, yeah, I'll just forget.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Oh that's right, I'm doing a radio show. Concentrate, concentrate,
- 7:53Speaker 1: for God's sake. But no, I sat in your head,
- 7:57Speaker 1: which I've already told you guys about. In the he
- 8:00Speaker 1: had a terrifying moments of utter blankness at the start
- 8:05Speaker 1: of a play.
- 8:05Speaker 2: For example, I'm not good. I'm i'd ever do like
- 8:09Speaker 2: a play or anything. Yeah, Like, it's too far down
- 8:12Speaker 2: the acting route for me.
- 8:13Speaker 3: You don't play? Yeah, plays, I need one? Yeah, I
- 8:16Speaker 3: did one, and it was I didn't want to. It
- 8:22Speaker 3: was just like a guy. A guy got hired in
- 8:24Speaker 3: the lead and then he got cast in a TV show,
- 8:27Speaker 3: so obviously he took the TV shows at Circle down
- 8:29Speaker 3: in Wellington. I must have told you about this, Jay
- 8:32Speaker 3: and then and then the director ragged me up ward
- 8:35Speaker 3: work with on TV shows and he was like, you
- 8:38Speaker 3: gonta do a play man you wonder And I was like,
- 8:40Speaker 3: absolutely not. And it was the lead role. And I
- 8:45Speaker 3: had eight days to learn a ninety five page script.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Fuck that.
- 8:50Speaker 3: And I was in every single scene. I think it
- 8:52Speaker 3: had one scene off. It was a three hander. Yeah,
- 8:55Speaker 3: And so I was like, yeah, right out right right,
- 9:01Speaker 3: yeah did that? And I learned. It was even probably less,
- 9:03Speaker 3: I think, because don't know, if you know Jason White,
- 9:05Speaker 3: the hector, was yeah, so he was very well too
- 9:07Speaker 3: briefly and he's like, nah, piece of person.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Man.
- 9:11Speaker 3: I used to learn like thirty pages a day, and
- 9:13Speaker 3: I was like, oh sweet. So then I was learning
- 9:14Speaker 3: twenty twenty five pages a day, so I was like yeah,
- 9:17Speaker 3: and just just did it because you had to.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:19Speaker 3: And then I really loved it, really loved it. But
- 9:22Speaker 3: it was like it was twenty eight performances or something
- 9:24Speaker 3: across a month round about and.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Did you do them all?
- 9:27Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 9:27Speaker 2: Wow?
- 9:28Speaker 3: And then but then I found jas that you get
- 9:32Speaker 3: like after five or six, Okay, i'll get it over it.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you're done.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Yeah. I didn't get but I didn't really find the
- 9:38Speaker 3: reward and going again and again and again and finding
- 9:42Speaker 3: something else. I did like the fact that if you
- 9:43Speaker 3: had an idea, you could go oh great, And we've
- 9:46Speaker 3: spoken about that before. When you do a TV thing
- 9:49Speaker 3: or a film thing, you often have your best ideas
- 9:51Speaker 3: when you're driving home. Ah, I should have done that. Yeah,
- 9:54Speaker 3: but with a player, you can go, well, I try
- 9:56Speaker 3: that tomorrow, and more often than not, you try it
- 9:58Speaker 3: and it sucked.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Yes, it just becomes a job. I remember we had
- 10:02Speaker 1: this legendary situation. It was I wasn't in the play.
- 10:06Speaker 1: It was before my time, but we had that exact
- 10:09Speaker 1: scenario where the main lead in our school play got
- 10:13Speaker 1: sick and like really sick. And this guy I remember,
- 10:16Speaker 1: I still remember his name, Graham Perdoh, who was the coolest.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Seriously, he was the coolest dude.
- 10:23Speaker 1: He used to have an umbrella and just walk around.
- 10:27Speaker 2: He was.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Today and yeah, he was in the seventh form and
- 10:32Speaker 1: I think I was in the fourth form or something.
- 10:33Speaker 2: He was just a very cool dude.
- 10:35Speaker 1: The day before it opened, he took over the role
- 10:38Speaker 1: without any you know, they said, Graham, do you want
- 10:41Speaker 1: to do it?
- 10:42Speaker 2: And he did it and it was brilliant and learnt
- 10:44Speaker 2: it all in a day. Did swing's umbrella around?
- 10:47Speaker 1: No, But he was just one of those really cool cats.
- 10:51Speaker 3: It's quite good, isn't. It's good to have done. I
- 10:54Speaker 3: don't know if I would do again.
- 10:56Speaker 2: So what was the saying yes?
- 10:58Speaker 3: Because I was scared play?
- 11:00Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 11:00Speaker 3: Right, So if I'm scared of it, I have to
- 11:01Speaker 3: say yes. If the only reason you're not doing something
- 11:03Speaker 3: is because you're scared of doing it, then you have
- 11:05Speaker 3: to say yes, I don't know that. If you're scared
- 11:07Speaker 3: of failure and that's what's stopping you, you have to do.
- 11:09Speaker 2: But what if it's something that is literally nothing to
- 11:12Speaker 2: do with anything you're interested in doing because it was
- 11:14Speaker 2: acting and you were scared. Yeah, I mean.
- 11:16Speaker 3: If it's like fucking you want to fix his car
- 11:18Speaker 3: or go for a really long walk, then yeah.
- 11:23Speaker 1: I don't know if I would do a play again.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I've done quite a few.
- 11:26Speaker 3: I'd like something, a real good one, like what are
- 11:31Speaker 3: the classics? JA?
- 11:31Speaker 2: Certainly not Shakespeare, Billy Elliot.
- 11:33Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I don't think I want to do Shakespeare.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Gary Glenn Ross.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I'd like that one Blood Brothers plays.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I'm waiting for gott I saw that one
- 11:44Speaker 3: with McCallen. Yes, and who was in it with him?
- 11:48Speaker 2: That's a fucking random place, don't remember.
- 11:50Speaker 3: I can't remember.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Oh, I just.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Wasn't Patrick Stewart, I don't think. And then I'd never
- 11:55Speaker 3: I'd never heard of the play. I was like twenty,
- 11:58Speaker 3: I don't know how old I was. And it's not short, no,
- 12:02Speaker 3: And you're sitting there watching it and it was about
- 12:05Speaker 3: an hour fifteen into it and I was like bitless,
- 12:08Speaker 3: fucking god, I was not even going to turn Yeah,
- 12:13Speaker 3: and so it proved, But fuck that was boring.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Well so was Beckett.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Yeah, the writer, he's brilliant but kind of a pretty
- 12:22Speaker 1: tedious character. It is biography right, well, no order, no biography.
- 12:27Speaker 1: He's a pretty grim, stolic, boring dude.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Yeah. Most most people that you guys act words, right,
- 12:35Speaker 2: do they do plays?
- 12:38Speaker 3: I have acted?
- 12:39Speaker 2: It's a split yeah yeah back in the day. Yeah
- 12:41Speaker 2: about like back for example, back when Brokenwood was still going,
- 12:45Speaker 2: did any of those because that's like a serious program,
- 12:47Speaker 2: did any of those actors do plays? Yeah? Yeah, quite
- 12:49Speaker 2: a few of them, right, Okay? Is it like a
- 12:51Speaker 2: thing that you do when you're not And then.
- 12:53Speaker 1: There's unfortunately there's not a lot of theater around really.
- 12:58Speaker 1: I mean there's you know, Auckland Theater Company. I think
- 13:01Speaker 1: that's still going, isn't.
- 13:02Speaker 3: It, and stuff like that.
- 13:04Speaker 2: There's there's not huge opportunities.
- 13:07Speaker 3: I was actually a basement as amateur theater, and they
- 13:11Speaker 3: do some good stuff, but they're really short runs.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Yes, I did actually get asked a couple of times
- 13:17Speaker 1: to do those plays, but I don't know why attend now,
- 13:20Speaker 1: Probably because I was too terrified.
- 13:22Speaker 3: They're terrifying and also horrendously paid my experience anyway, because
- 13:28Speaker 3: very much. They set it up as a co op,
- 13:29Speaker 3: so you get a percentage of the door, and I
- 13:32Speaker 3: think I did. What was that month? I got like
- 13:34Speaker 3: four hundred bucks or something?
- 13:35Speaker 2: Yeah, shit the fuck? Yeah. Wow.
- 13:42Speaker 3: You're not in it obviously for the money, but do
- 13:44Speaker 3: be nice to have more than that.
- 13:45Speaker 1: It's better than like, you know, Johnny and I going
- 13:48Speaker 1: and doing tours around the country and then fucking owing money.
- 13:51Speaker 3: Because you're on the hammele. And that was the problem
- 13:54Speaker 3: with the theater, is that you could just run a
- 13:56Speaker 3: tab on the bar and then at the end of
- 13:57Speaker 3: the yes and then one else I think on the
- 14:00Speaker 3: cast owed money.
- 14:01Speaker 2: That great.
- 14:02Speaker 1: That great autobiography I told you about with Barry Humphrees
- 14:06Speaker 1: and oh yeah, called More Please. He's got some magnificent
- 14:11Speaker 1: stories of doing plays and ship and getting heavily on
- 14:15Speaker 1: the pest all the time, and doing a scene and
- 14:18Speaker 1: running off to the bar and having a quicktion and
- 14:20Speaker 1: and then running back on again.
- 14:21Speaker 3: It was great stuff.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Unreal, wasn't yeh Man back in the day.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Yeah, but no, like if I was approached, it's very elegant,
- 14:30Speaker 1: isn't she?
- 14:31Speaker 2: If I was approached eyes to the front, are you
- 14:34Speaker 2: kidding me?
- 14:35Speaker 1: In fact, I think it was approached not long ago,
- 14:36Speaker 1: but I can't remember what.
- 14:37Speaker 3: It was for, but probably moved along, sir.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Yeah, that would be my party, which is very elegant.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Yeah you'd know that. So what I was gonna ask
- 14:50Speaker 2: before is would you rather, with a week's notice, do
- 14:52Speaker 2: a fight, a boxing fight or a play?
- 14:57Speaker 3: At my age of play a play? Yeah, I was
- 15:00Speaker 3: too old any any injury. I sustained that I'd.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Die if I had a fight. Yeah, there's two minutes.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I'd have a heart attack. Let's use that excuse again.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Old Kizy will do it for you. Yeah, Jas will
- 15:12Speaker 2: sign up for it. That old up. That's that's a
- 15:17Speaker 2: true story. Uh today, Hey Hidarky Big show four or
- 15:25Speaker 2: seven weekdays. It's super good. Check it's so good. It's
- 15:29Speaker 2: so elegant.
