- 0:01Hey friends, welcome back to the She Speaks Live podcast.
- 0:04I am so thankful you're here listening in today.
- 0:08I am with me author and speaker for Lifeway Ministries, Melissa
- 0:12Spoelstra. She's written an 8 session Bible
- 0:16study all about angels and I'm so excited to bring you her
- 0:19biblical insight and wisdom on this fascinating topic.
- 0:23Together, we'll explore Scripture from Genesis to
- 0:26Revelation to learn who angels are, what they do, and what they
- 0:30have to do with us. Melissa has such a deep passion
- 0:33for studying God's Word. She holds a degree in Bible
- 0:36Theology, has written numerous Bible studies, and is a regular
- 0:40contributor to the Proverbs 31 verse 5 app.
- 0:43I love this conversation so much, especially as we approach
- 0:46the Christmas season when we tend to talk about angels a
- 0:50little more. All right, if you're ready, I'm
- 0:52ready. Here's my guest, Melissa
- 0:55Spoelstra. Hi, Melissa.
- 0:57Welcome to She Speaks Life. I am so excited you are here.
- 1:01Welcome. I'm so happy to be here, excited
- 1:04about this conversation. Yeah, this topic I absolutely am
- 1:09so excited because we're going to be talking about angels and I
- 1:14love angels and I know most people do and we don't hear
- 1:19often on the topic of the message on angels.
- 1:23And so this is going to be a fun conversation.
- 1:26You have written A8 session Bible study called Angels
- 1:32Finding Hope in the God who Reigns over heaven and Earth,
- 1:37and you have published this with Lifeway.
- 1:40You are a Lifeway speaker and I'm so excited for you to just
- 1:45impart to us this message. I just find them angels so
- 1:49fascinating. They're just wooman throughout
- 1:52the Bible from Genesis to Revelation.
- 1:55And I love hearing what the role is for us today, that they
- 1:59weren't just in the Bible there and that was it, but that they
- 2:03do have a role for us today. And I can't wait for us to dive
- 2:09in further with that. And before we do, I love to ask
- 2:13each guest before we begin, what is a Scripture verse that you
- 2:17are currently enjoying and why? Well, I'm going to go to Psalm
- 2:2127. It's the passage that I'm
- 2:23currently memorizing, and it starts with the Lord is my light
- 2:26and my salvation, of whom shall I be afraid?
- 2:29But it's in verse 3, the verse that I'm really holding on to
- 2:32right now. It's where David says even if I
- 2:35am attacked, I will remain confident.
- 2:38And in this conversation about angels, that's one of the things
- 2:41I hear women say, oh, I don't want to study, you know,
- 2:44supernatural beings and certainly fallen angels that are
- 2:47demonic because what if I get attacked?
- 2:49And I always want to remind people, if you're following
- 2:52Jesus with a whole heart attack is just part of the deal.
- 2:57And so studying this will only help us be not scared, but
- 3:02prepared. And so I certainly through this
- 3:06process there have been moments of feeling some spiritual
- 3:09warfare, some attack. But I love how David says even
- 3:12if I am attacked, I will remain confident, not because I know
- 3:16anything great, but because the Lord is my light and my
- 3:19salvation. So whom should I be afraid of?
- 3:23Yeah, I love it. I know.
- 3:25I think being aware of what is going on in the supernatural is
- 3:29so important. It's how you get over fear and
- 3:33things when you understand you know where it's coming from, the
- 3:37root of it, and you're able to push against that and resist the
- 3:42enemy when you're aware of what is going on in the supernatural
- 3:46realm. And so let's just begin with
- 3:49what inspired you to write this Bible study on angels.
- 3:53There is nothing like it. I absolutely loved it.
- 3:57When it came across my e-mail, I was like, Oh my gosh.
- 4:00This is definitely something that would be fun and important,
- 4:05essential and vital to talk about.
- 4:08So for me, it was a couple years ago, I was at my daddy's
- 4:11memorial service and someone made one of those offended
- 4:15comments that is meant to be comforting but is very
- 4:17theologically inaccurate. God needed another Angel.
- 4:21And I remember just thinking, wait, do you think that we
- 4:25become angels when we die? And I didn't say anything.
- 4:29Obviously it was the time of our family's grief, but I just kept
- 4:32thinking about it. And then I was listening to some
- 4:34of my favorite podcasts and people were talking about the
- 4:37supernatural, about things like the Nephilim and cosmic
- 4:40geography. And I heard on a podcast someone
- 4:43say this. They said God is the king of A2
- 4:46household family angels and the supernatural and humans in the
- 4:50natural. And I can tell you I've never
- 4:53thought of it like that. Like, and I thought, wait, I'm
- 4:56going to spend eternity with angels worshipping God and I
- 4:59know almost nothing about them. I had a very weak angelology is
- 5:04what I would say. And so I just began to study.
- 5:07And really it was the scriptures themselves that, you know, just
- 5:11in my daily reading, everywhere I looked, I saw angels.
- 5:14There's over 300 mentions from Genesis to Revelation of God's,
- 5:18and I think if God revealed that much about them, he would want
- 5:21us to know something about them. And what I found is that angels
- 5:25are always pointing back to the power and purposes of God.
- 5:28It's not that we become enamored with these supernatural beings
- 5:32that we know just get a glimpse of in Scripture, but I think the
- 5:36the benefit in studying them, and certainly for me, and I hope
- 5:40for anyone else who does, is that it will just give them
- 5:42greater hope that their God is amazing.
- 5:45He's Yahweh Sabeoth, the Lord of Heaven's armies, with millions
- 5:49of angels at his disposal. Yeah, I like what you said
- 5:53specifically on page 149 you said that angels are there to
- 5:58inform and confirm the work of God.
- 6:01And I thought that is just just sums it up right there and to
- 6:05point people to the greatness of God also.
- 6:10And I just that was a a paragraph that you wrote.
- 6:13And I thought that was just so just, that's exactly it, you
- 6:18know, summing it up with what angels do.
- 6:21And I know we're going to go into the different kinds of
- 6:24angels and their different roles and stuff.
- 6:27So in your Bible study you had pointed out some misconceptions.
- 6:35I know you just mentioned one that you know if someone dies
- 6:39they turn into an Angel in heaven.
- 6:41What are some other misconceptions that you have
- 6:44seen in the modern? Day the biggest one for me is
- 6:48that angels don't have wings. Like, I mean, look at at at the
- 6:53holiday time, every Angel you're gonna see in the nativity plays
- 6:57in the top of the Christmas trees just on things.
- 6:59Are these winged? And certainly the the fat little
- 7:02chair with wings. There's nothing that's a
- 7:04textless doctrine. I mean, there's nothing that
- 7:08points to that. But now there are some heavenly
- 7:11creatures that have wings. The seraphim and the cherubim
- 7:13are both described with wings, but the seraphim wings are
- 7:17covered with eyes, right? So never seen that in a nativity
- 7:21place. So I think there's a lot of
- 7:22misconception. You know, even our our innocent
- 7:26cute little movies at Christmas, every time a bell rings, you
- 7:28know, another Angel gets its wings.
- 7:30And so I think that's a misconception that I had for
- 7:33sure, that angels mostly when they appear, appear in human
- 7:36form to Zechariah, to married to Joseph, to Abraham.
- 7:41That's mostly how we find them now.
- 7:43People were scared. So many times when an Angel
- 7:46appears, the first thing they say is do not be afraid.
- 7:48I mean, Daniel basically passed out when an Angel, when Gabriel
- 7:52appeared to him. So there must be something about
- 7:55them that's heavenly. The biggest misconception for
- 7:58me, and I think for most of us is that we are struggling with
- 8:02an anti supernatural bias. We live kind of as though
- 8:05there's God and there's people and we forget that there's this
- 8:09whole other thing. There's one theologian who
- 8:11referred to it as the excluded middle, that there's this whole
- 8:14middle category of of warfare that's happening in the
- 8:19heavenlies and it impacts our lives.
- 8:22And a few times in Scripture, you see that certainly with
- 8:24Daniel, where they're like, hey, as soon as you prayed Daniel, I
- 8:27sent this Angel, I was coming to help you, but I was waylaid for
- 8:3221 days because I was fighting the the spirit Prince of Persia.
- 8:35So I think just an awareness of that is a huge misconception for
- 8:40us because we look at everything so logically.
- 8:42No, that's good. I mean, I just, I can't help but
- 8:45think like this is how God operates.
- 8:48He's operates in the supernatural.
- 8:50God is a spirit, We're a spirit. And there's so much more going
- 8:53on in the unseen realm than we can even wrap our minds around.
- 8:59It's not supposed to be logical or reasoning, right?
- 9:03So I think that's important for us to turn our attention to and
- 9:09understand. And so that's so good that you
- 9:12have this study for us. What were some of the surprising
- 9:17things that you found about angels during your research with
- 9:21the study? Lots of, lots of different
- 9:24things. The wings thing was, was a
- 9:25pretty big one for me. I, I was, I was as pressed at
- 9:28that. But I, if you'd have asked me,
- 9:32did an Angel ever pray to God? I would be like, no, we, we pray
- 9:37to God. But actually there is an Angel
- 9:39who prays in the book of Zechariah.
- 9:41And this Angel prays because it's the end of the 70 years of
- 9:45exile and God hasn't delivered his people.
- 9:48And Daniel made that prophecy. That Angel was very aware of
- 9:50that. And he, he prays on behalf and
- 9:53he's like, God is, is it time to bring your people back?
- 9:55And he, he just praised his beautiful prayer on behalf of
- 9:59humans. And I think it's so interesting
- 10:01that we are going to spend eternity with these creatures
- 10:03and they seem to have a warm heart toward us.
- 10:06What is it? The New Testament first Peter
- 10:08says they are. They wonder at our salvation.
- 10:11They wonder at redemption. They're the only other created
- 10:15thing that contains personhood, that refers to themselves as I,
- 10:22that has emotions, that has a will.
- 10:24And definitely we're distinct from angels, but we have a lot
- 10:27in common with them. We worship God alongside them.
- 10:30Yeah, that's so good. Now, do you go into the
- 10:33different roles of angels and what they have to do with us
- 10:38today? So I I created what I call some
- 10:42handlebars. I just took an acronym from the
- 10:44name Angels and because, because what I really want to focus on
- 10:49is who they are, what they do and what that has to do with
- 10:52you, right? Like, and so, so I think what's
- 10:55important is to go, what do we find angels doing in scripture?
- 10:59What are their main roles? And so if it's OK, I can just
- 11:01share. Oh, I'd love it.
- 11:03Yeah, I'd like to dive into this because I was just in Judges and
- 11:07I ran into an Angel that had Maura's wife.
- 11:13It didn't even name the woman, but an Angel came to the woman
- 11:17and said that she was going to conceive.
- 11:19So they're everywhere. Yeah, Yeah.
- 11:21They are bringing messages and so the A and angels is adore.
- 11:26They adore God and we see them worshipping God from from
- 11:31Genesis to Revelation. They are they are before God's
- 11:33throne. They are crying holy, holy,
- 11:35holy. And I think what that has to do
- 11:37with you and I is that when we when we talk about God's holy
- 11:40angels, it reminds us that God is holy and that he's worthy of
- 11:44our worship. And we shouldn't let the angels
- 11:46be the only ones worshipping him.
- 11:47We should join them and worship. The end is kind of with a
- 11:52capital because it's notify God's servants.
- 11:54It's just like what you were talking about.
- 11:56So in fact, their name means messenger.
- 11:59It's Malik in the Hebrew, it's Angelos and the Greek, which is
- 12:03where we get the word Angel. It means messenger.
- 12:05They're bringing messages. That's what kind of makes them
- 12:09distinct from the cherubim and the seraphim who are definitely
- 12:11worshipping God. They're guarding, they're doing
- 12:13some other things, but it's the the angels that come in human
- 12:16form that are that are notifying God's servants.
- 12:20Then G, they guard God's boundary.
- 12:22They are in a guardian role. You see that in with the
- 12:26cherubim right out the gate in Genesis.
- 12:28They're guarding the way to the tree of life so that Adam and
- 12:31Eve can't get back at that fruit that they the forbidden fruit
- 12:34that they ate. They're also guarding God's
- 12:37people as they're fleeing Egypt. You see Jesus saying, you know,
- 12:42if I, if I wanted to, I could call down the angels right now
- 12:45to protect us. And so there is this protective
- 12:48measure, this guardian role that they have.
- 12:51So A adore God, adore God and notify God's servants.
- 12:56G guard God's boundaries. E everybody's, everybody's
- 13:00favorite and they enact God's judgement.
- 13:03And we see this a ton. I mean, let's go to Passover,
- 13:07put some blood on the door. Why?
- 13:09So that the Angel of death would pass over.
- 13:15Certainly there's some Old Testament stories where we see
- 13:18God's people up against enemies and God is a rescuer of his
- 13:22people. He's a deliverer and he when he
- 13:24wants to can just, he sent an 1 Angel to kill 185,000 soldiers,
- 13:29Assyrian soldiers that were, you know, coming against God's
- 13:32people. And this goes back to what we
- 13:33were talking about with that anti supernatural bias.
- 13:36You know, we stack up our pros and cons list.
- 13:38And if, if the nation of Judah had done their pros and cons
- 13:42list, they were going to be like, we should run like this
- 13:45doesn't make sense. There's so many of them and
- 13:46there's so few of us but God. But God changes everything.
- 13:51And there he had the Angel. But I think the thing about
- 13:54enacting God's judgment that I think is what that has to do
- 13:57with you and I is I think about the parable that Jesus told of
- 14:01the weed and the wheat, the weeds and the wheat.
- 14:04And it's Jesus said, you know, the, the wheat is those, that
- 14:08the good soil, it's the seeds. It's the true followers of the
- 14:11Lord. And then these weeds are coming
- 14:13and sown among the wheat. And they say, oh, should we pull
- 14:16the weeds? And Jesus says, no, it will
- 14:19damage the wheat. So just leave them in.
- 14:22And at the end of the age, the angels are the harvesters.
- 14:26They're going to come with the sickle.
- 14:28And so there's kind of two things that I think that should
- 14:30motivate us to do. First of all, leave the labeling
- 14:33to the angels. Stop trying to pull the weeds.
- 14:37You're a good person, you're a bad person.
- 14:38You're a good person, you're a bad person.
- 14:40That's not our job. Our job is to follow Jesus and
- 14:43to love on everyone, even our enemies.
- 14:47And then secondly, it should remind us that judgement is
- 14:49coming and God will send his angels to judge the earth and
- 14:53put the separate, the weed in the weeds.
- 14:55And so everyone that we love, anyone that we see because we're
- 14:59supposed to love everyone, we should be sharing with them that
- 15:01there is a God who loved the world so much that he sent his
- 15:04Son Jesus to die for us. That we don't have to undergo
- 15:08the judgement to come if we have answered God's invitation to
- 15:14repent. And so to me, the angels
- 15:17enacting God's judgement should be a huge motivator for all of
- 15:20us to share the gospel message. God's love, we're sinners.
- 15:25Christ paid the penalty. We need to receive him and
- 15:28follow him. So that's our El Angels lead
- 15:31God's people. We see this all the time in
- 15:33Scripture. I love there's an old show
- 15:35called Touched by an Angel, and I'm always like, oh, people were
- 15:38being touched by an Angel in the Bible way before that show came
- 15:41on, right? I mean, Lot was grabbed by an
- 15:43Angel, like let's get out of Sodom, and he's kind of dawdling
- 15:46and the Angel literally grabs him.
- 15:48But one of my favorite led by an Angel is Elijah.
- 15:54He's just had a ministry high and then he has a big ministry
- 15:57low and an Angel leads him and the Angel says you need to eat
- 16:03food and take a nap. So I always say if an Angel
- 16:05appeared and was going to lead me, I hope, I hope it's to to
- 16:08take a nap and eat some food that that would be which is
- 16:11really cool. We see it.
- 16:13We see God an Angel LED Abraham to stop the knife from
- 16:17sacrificing his own son, which is again a picture of Jesus.
- 16:21So, so many examples of angels leading God's people and then
- 16:23the S service God's agents. I hate to say it this way, but
- 16:29it's kind of my catch all because one of my beefs in
- 16:32reading some of the theological books on angels throughout the
- 16:34ages is that people can get real tight in terms of like, if an
- 16:39Angel isn't doing one of these four or five, six, whatever
- 16:41their list of the things angels do, then it can't be an Angel.
- 16:45Like you must be mistaken. And here's the thing, Scripture
- 16:48tells us we can entertain angels unaware.
- 16:51That's why we're supposed to show hospitality to everyone.
- 16:53And I look at scripture and I'm like, angels can do anything God
- 16:56tells them to do. If God wants them to stand in
- 16:59the path of a donkey, they can stand in the path of a donkey.
- 17:02There's even a joke that angels do laundry.
- 17:05And everyone's like, where in the Bible there's this, there's
- 17:07this passage in Zechariah where the priest Yeshua.
- 17:10Has dirty clothes. And an Angel comes and gives him
- 17:13clean clothes, so I don't know if he just zapped it or if he
- 17:15did laundry or if he gave him new clothes, whatever.
- 17:17But my point is, is that they're God's agents.
- 17:22So an agent is someone who goes on behalf of someone else.
- 17:25So anything God asked them to do, they can do.
- 17:28There's really only one thing angels can't do, and that's they
- 17:31couldn't die for our sin. And only Jesus could do that.
- 17:35He is the stairway. The I love Jacob has in the Old
- 17:40Testament Genesis this dream and he has this dream of a stairway
- 17:44between heaven and earth and the angels are going up and down on
- 17:47the stairway. It's such a interesting, you
- 17:49know, visual picture for us. But then in John chapter 1,
- 17:52Jesus says to his disciples, you will all see heaven open up and
- 17:56you will see a stairway with the angels of God going up and down.
- 18:00And he said, and I am that stairway.
- 18:02The Son of Man is that stairway. So it is Jesus who is the
- 18:07stairway, the bridge between the scene and the unseen, between
- 18:10heaven and earth, between being lost and found, between darkness
- 18:13and light. And yes, the angels go up and
- 18:14down, but Jesus himself is that stairway.
- 18:18That's so beautiful, so good, and such an important message.
- 18:22I know as we get closer to Christmas, we start talking
- 18:25about angels, angels because Angel Gabriel coming to Mary,
- 18:30Jesus, mom and all of that. So I just love how timely the
- 18:37study is. And do you have, I'm just
- 18:40curious, do you have a favorite chapter of this Bible study
- 18:46have. You maybe?
- 18:47Gone through it. Yeah, that's hard and.
- 18:49Maybe not. Oh, it might be this one, but.
- 18:52Rather than a favorite chapter, I think one of my kind of
- 18:55favorite side benefits of doing a study like this because
- 18:58typically I write in a book of the Bible.
- 19:00Like my last study before this was the Gospel of John and
- 19:03before that was the book of Isaiah.
- 19:04I normally like to camp in a book and really get to know the
- 19:08author and God's heart and the message and what was going on in
- 19:11history at at that time. So this was different because it
- 19:14was tracing a theme. It's what we call biblical
- 19:16theology where we start at the beginning.
- 19:18And so it's this isn't organized like here's the chapter on
- 19:21angels guarding. Here's the chapter on angels
- 19:23notifying. It is let's start at Genesis and
- 19:26look at Angel mentions and say, what did God reveal about
- 19:29himself progressively over time? And we work our way in the study
- 19:33from Genesis to Revelation. But one of the side benefits and
- 19:36one of the favorite things for me along the way is studying
- 19:39genre of literature. And what I mean is that like the
- 19:44first week is angels in the beginning, it's the Pentateuch,
- 19:46the first five books of the Bible.
- 19:48That's a lot of narrative, that's a lot of history.
- 19:50So fun. Then we went into the historical
- 19:53books, you know, Joshua, Judges, Ruth, all of those.
- 19:56Then the wisdom books, which there's a lot of poetry there,
- 20:00there's Psalms, there's a job has a lot of supernatural
- 20:05activity going on behind the scenes that we learn about.
- 20:09So I think. I got to do a little teaching on
- 20:12like when we got to the prophets.
- 20:14Here are 5 things you should know about apocalyptic
- 20:16literature before we dig in. Or here's when we look at a
- 20:19parable, here's some things we need to keep in mind or poetry,
- 20:25you know that some of this is allegory, metaphorical.
- 20:27We need to keep our ears up. So like one of my favorite
- 20:30things because I'm a Bible nerd is that I loved getting to teach
- 20:34genre of literature along the way in this study.
- 20:37And so to me, that's a a little side benefit that just really
- 20:40needed to happen as we came along.
- 20:43Yeah, he had a wide variety going from Genesis through
- 20:46Revelation. Yeah, lot of terrain.
- 20:49Lot of lot of terrain to cover. Lots of cover.
- 20:52Yeah, I love the format. I love everything about this
- 20:55Bible study. And I am so excited that you got
- 21:00to share this important, vital message on angels and us, to be
- 21:05more aware of them and their supernatural activity.
- 21:09And before we close, I'd love for you to have an opportunity
- 21:14to share a take away for us, something that the listener can
- 21:18putter on or take action in. Well, I think about coming into
- 21:21the Christmas season, you're going to see angels, you're
- 21:24going to see them on your decor, you're going to sing about them
- 21:26in our beautiful Christmas songs.
- 21:29So I've just prepared 7 free devotions on Christmas Angels on
- 21:34my website and you can just go sign up for free and put in your
- 21:38e-mail address. And then just for the next 7
- 21:40days you'll get delivered to your inbox.
- 21:42A little teaching on, you know, day one.
- 21:44I think it's that the Angel that came to Zechariah and what do we
- 21:47learn? What is God's message for us at
- 21:49at Christmas time, time to marry to Joseph, to the shepherds.
- 21:53And then a little bit about spiritual warfare, because I do
- 21:56think the holidays is a time also of spiritual warfare that
- 21:59we want to be prepared and eyes wide open.
- 22:02This is the time that, you know, conflicts and families happen as
- 22:05we all get together or there's financial strain for a lot of
- 22:09people during this time of the year.
- 22:11And so so yeah, this is just a way to continue to dig a little
- 22:16bit deeper into angelic activity in a biblical way.
- 22:20That's good. And that's on your website.
- 22:22It's on melissabolster.com. If you just click on Christmas
- 22:25DeVos, put your e-mail in, it'll happen.
- 22:29Yeah, so good. Well, thanks, Melissa, for
- 22:31coming on here. It was a joy to have you.
