- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas! Ready to learn some new phrases. I've been practising my market shopping. Lucas: That's great. Today we're going to buy something that's a staple in Malaysian cooking — tofu. Luna: Tofu! I love tofu. How do you say it in Malay? Lucas: It's 'tauhu'. T-A-U-H-U. Tauhu. Luna: Tauhu. Tauhu. Okay, I've got that. Lucas: So if you're at the market and you want to buy tofu, you can say 'Saya mahu tauhu.' Luna: Saya mahu tauhu. That means 'I want tofu.' Lucas: Exactly. Now, let's say you want to ask the price. Tofu is often sold per piece. So you ask 'Berapa harga sekeping?' Luna: Berapa harga sekeping? How much per piece? Lucas: Right. 'Sekeping' means one piece. So 'Berapa harga sekeping?' Luna: Berapa harga sekeping. Got it. Lucas: Let's practice a little dialogue. I'll be the seller. You come up and say you want tofu. Luna: Saya mahu tauhu. Lucas: Baik. Berapa keping? Luna: Umm, I want three pieces. How do I say that? Lucas: You say 'Saya mahu tiga keping.' Tiga is three. So 'Saya mahu tiga keping.' Luna: Saya mahu tiga keping. Lucas: Perfect. And the seller might say 'Tiga keping. RM3.' Then you can ask 'Tauhu ini segar?' Is this tofu fresh? Luna: Tauhu ini segar? Good question. I always want fresh tofu. Lucas: And if the seller says yes, you can say 'Boleh potong?' Can you cut it? Luna: Boleh potong. That's useful. Lucas: Yeah. And if you want a specific type, like white tofu, you say 'Saya mahu tauhu putih.' Luna: Saya mahu tauhu putih. White tofu. There's also fried tofu, right? Lucas: Yes, that's 'tauhu goreng'. But we'll stick to basic tofu today. Luna: Okay. So let me try a full conversation. I walk up and say 'Saya mahu tauhu.' Lucas: Baik. Berapa keping? Luna: Saya mahu tiga keping. Lucas: Baik. Tiga keping. RM3. Luna: Tauhu ini segar? Lucas: Ya, segar. Luna: Boleh potong? Lucas: Boleh. Luna: Okay, I think I can do this. But I'd probably forget 'segar' in the moment. Lucas: That's okay. Practice makes perfect. Let's repeat the key phrases once more. Luna: Sure. Lucas: Saya mahu tauhu. Luna: Saya mahu tauhu. Lucas: Berapa harga sekeping? Luna: Berapa harga sekeping? Lucas: Saya mahu tiga keping. Luna: Saya mahu tiga keping. Lucas: Tauhu ini segar? Luna: Tauhu ini segar? Lucas: Boleh potong? Luna: Boleh potong? Lucas: Saya mahu tauhu putih. Luna: Saya mahu tauhu putih. Great. I feel ready for the market. Lucas: If today was actually useful to you, the way these stay ad-free is listener support — buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's a small way to keep the show going. I know I appreciate it. Lucas: Me too. So, back to tofu — you can also ask for it to be cut into smaller pieces with 'Boleh potong kecil-kecil?' Luna: Boleh potong kecil-kecil? That's handy for cooking. Lucas: Exactly. So remember, 'kecil' means small. 'Kecil-kecil' means into small pieces. Luna: Got it. So if I want it cut small, I say 'Boleh potong kecil-kecil?' Lucas: Yes. And the seller will usually say 'Boleh' and cut it for you. Luna: Awesome. I'm going to try this at the market this weekend. Lucas: Do it. And let me know how it goes. For now, let's do a quick review of all the phrases. Luna: Okay, hit me. Lucas: Saya mahu tauhu. Luna: I want tofu. Lucas: Berapa harga sekeping? Luna: How much per piece? Lucas: Saya mahu tiga keping. Luna: I want three pieces. Lucas: Tauhu ini segar? Luna: Is this tofu fresh? Lucas: Boleh potong? Luna: Can you cut it? Lucas: Saya mahu tauhu putih. Luna: I want white tofu. Lucas: Excellent. You've got this. Practice these and you'll be a pro at buying tofu in Malay. Luna: Thanks Lucas.
