- 1:56And this episode is like no other. This episode, man, I got my friend, he's host, man.
- 1:59He hosts shows all around the town from the Bay Area and Napa all the way to
- 2:03the Punchline callback bar.
- 2:05He's toured with Lance Woods and he was in this movie called Ball Busters.
- 2:09But right now, watch out again. We're going to get into that too.
- 2:11But right now, man, We about to get it in, man. Make some noise for my good
- 2:13friend, Mr. Marcus Manningham. How you doing, bro?
- 2:15Good. I'm good. What up, buddy? Yes, sir. We'll get that right.
- 2:19Yeah, we're black. We got to do better than that.
- 2:21Let's close it out. We'll get it done. This is some tea and tequila.
- 2:25That's what it is. That's what's up.
- 2:28So, Marcus, man, how you doing, bro? I'm good. I'm good, bro.
- 2:31Appreciate you having me on here. Appreciate it.
- 2:33I appreciate you being on and stuff like that. So you, you're not originally
- 2:36from California. You from, was it North Carolina?
- 2:38Yeah. Small town, Salisbury, North Carolina. That was my hometown.
- 2:43Nice, nice, nice. And what was it like being up there in Salisbury?
- 2:46It's cool. Like, I'm from a small town. So, you know, like, what do you mean?
- 2:51You know, like everybody knows each other, kind of like an industrial town where
- 2:55everybody worked at a warehouse pretty much. Like even my dad,
- 2:58pretty much most of my family were all warehouse workers or they either worked
- 3:03at a warehouse or the VA hospital.
- 3:05That was about it. Nice. You had to be a Salisbury steak for dinner.
- 3:10Totally different song. My bad. My bad. So what brought you out here to California?
- 3:15I had a friend that played basketball back in the day, Bobby Jackson.
- 3:19And I used to come out here and visit all the time. I would visit, I would visit.
- 3:23And then I just asked him one day, what do you think about me living out here?
- 3:26He was like, hell, I don't care. Like, I don't have no family out here.
- 3:29So I gave it a try. Probably maybe about a year into me living here,
- 3:33he ended up getting traded. So then I went back to North Carolina.
- 3:37And then I realized, I don't want
- 3:38to be here anymore. So now I'm back in Sacramento on the Buddy Podcast.
- 3:43Yeah, California is definitely different than North Carolina,
- 3:46man. So what got you into doing, were you doing stand-up comedy when you were in North Carolina?
- 3:51Dude, I didn't touch a microphone or do any kind of comedy until...
- 3:56Age 37, I had already been here for a while. Honestly, I never had any training
- 4:02or had thoughts of doing comedy.
- 4:04I hated doing book reports in front of the classroom, much less trying to make people laugh.
- 4:09But it's just something I wanted to get out of my system. I did one open mic at Laughs Unlimited.
- 4:15Okay. One three-minute set, and something about that just bit me,
- 4:19and I just kept coming back and kept coming back.
- 4:21And now, funny business. yeah that's
- 4:25that's how it goes that's that's funny so what made you want to just say
- 4:27like all right man it's time for me to just get on
- 4:31the mic i think i just wanted to see
- 4:33if i could do it because people would be like man you're
- 4:36funny you should try and i'm like man i can't do that like especially like i
- 4:40wasn't a stand-up guy i was more of like a tv guy like i watched every damn
- 4:45show coming up growing up like 227 nightcore like all that stuff i watched everything
- 4:50so i I would watch that and I'd be like, that's funny. Or I feel like I can do that.
- 4:55But then it's like actually doing it. Like, I don't know what I'm doing.
- 4:58So just one day I said I wanted to try. And I told maybe two people I was going to do open mic.
- 5:03I was not going to have 45 people up there watching me eat it. Hell no.
- 5:09It's not an option. So I did that. I did that little three minutes and I survived it.
- 5:14So I was just like, all right, well, let's keep seeing how far you can go with it.
- 5:18That's it. But yeah, I had no ambition at all of ever doing stand up.
- 5:22Because you're kind of more so like a just a reserved guy
- 5:25in general yeah i'm more i'm more of a laid back
- 5:27and watch you do a bunch of silly shit i'm not the kind of act
- 5:30like i don't start the
- 5:33party but if it gets going you know i'll jump in there i'll do my little two-step
- 5:37every now and then i feel like that's how it is like could be really like you're
- 5:40going to just get two or two of the other one of the others they're going to
- 5:43be like in real life they're just super reserved just chill like man only time
- 5:46i really want to talk is when i'm on the microphone well you're You're going
- 5:50to get the other comedian that's just an intention whore like 24-7.
- 5:55It's a very different dichotomy of what goes on up here. But the crowd,
- 6:00they think we all act like Krusty the Clown.
- 6:02Yeah. That's funny. We got our own personalities.
- 6:06Like, yeah, everybody's different.
- 6:09And so with that, you probably get a lot of people that like when you tell them
- 6:12that you're a stand-up comedian, you're like, oh, yeah. Tell me a joke. Oh, yeah, all the time.
- 6:16Yeah. Make me laugh, funny man. I'm like, now I'm definitely not telling you a joke. Yeah, I know.
- 6:22But I will tell you is that you can come to my comedy show. You really want
- 6:25to get these out. You got to pay. Yeah, I want to pay.
- 6:27I'm going to tell you all the jokes you want. Till your money runs out. Yeah.
- 6:32Too out of minimum. Too out of minimum.
- 6:34So when did you start? So you say you started off like hit open mic.
- 6:38When did you start like producing shows? Because you've been producing a lot of shows, bro.
- 6:42Let me say, I probably...
- 6:45Maybe a year into my stand-up career, Robert Berry offered me a show at Comedy Spot.
- 6:51I didn't know anything about producing shows. But I did know that,
- 6:55like, talking to Lance and a lot of those guys coming up, that's what they were doing.
- 6:59It's like, you want to get stage time, produce your own show.
- 7:02You can have all the time you want then.
- 7:04You don't have to fuss at anybody or, can I get on, man? You got your own stuff going.
- 7:08So I was like, that's the route. So I just started producing shows at Comedy Spot.
- 7:11Spot and that led to other stuff because with the comedy spot i got that i remember we had our show,
- 7:19after that show we drove down to check out the pink martini for food and we
- 7:24just got in conversation with
- 7:26a guy and he was like well what do you think about doing the show here
- 7:28so then all of a sudden now i'm running two shows and then that's just how it
- 7:32you know word of mouth and other people i want to i want comedy in my place
- 7:36too and that's how it is but it's it's seldom we even go searching for it.
- 7:41They just word of mouth like it's a good product, apparently,
- 7:44so they keep bringing us back.
- 7:45So how long have you been doing the shows at the Pink Martini,
- 7:48then? I think at least probably, what, six years, maybe, at this point.
- 7:52Six years? Five or six years.
- 7:54Damn, okay, for sure. So you've been ready to burn coal, baby.
- 7:57Yeah, even during the pandemic. Keep that on the low.
- 8:01Yeah, keep that on the low. We had the little outdoor shows, little patio shows.
- 8:05That was out in Rockland, though, right? Yeah, they don't have a lot.
- 8:07Yeah, they don't give a fuck. There you go. There's no laws in Rockland.
- 8:10You do what you want. They like, find us.
- 8:13We don't care. We keep our bars open. We get people drunk. Ain't nothing to
- 8:18do. We just at home with this depression.
- 8:20Let us get drunk. Yeah, they got their own set of rules in politics down there.
- 8:24But thank you, Rockland. Thank you. Shout out to Rockland.
- 8:28Said never by black people. Never. Never. We get our check in that we dip.
- 8:34We've been to those shows.
- 8:35Rockland, Placerville. Yeah. Yeah, we, the borders of Roseville.
- 8:39We get our chicken. We go out.
- 8:43So what's it like? What's your process like? Like actually like producing shows,
- 8:46going out there, finding comedians and then just the promotion aspect of it.
- 8:50When it comes to picking comedians, it's random that I book anybody I've never seen before.
- 8:56Just because I feel like it's my reputation on the line.
- 8:59And even though I can't tell them
- 9:00what to say, I don't even know how it's going to work half of the time.
- 9:04Because you can say, yeah, this guy has funny jokes and that might be the one
- 9:07night he wants to try some new stuff.
- 9:08Yeah. Yeah. But I try to get people that I've already seen before.
- 9:13And i don't know i would just say i try
- 9:16to get people i've seen before and then i try to get people that
- 9:19are that's cool and not gonna start any trouble at
- 9:22the spot you know i'm saying yeah because like i say it's
- 9:25my reputation like i don't look at it it's just well i'm
- 9:28making a couple dollars so who cares what they say as long
- 9:30as i close it out and i have a good set no that matters because
- 9:34that's your product out there yeah yeah one thing that we definitely
- 9:37do get confused few some time as as is the fact that this is
- 9:40called like the entertainment business yeah you know
- 9:43and so we forget or show business and you know business is the
- 9:46longer word so that's kind of like the most important
- 9:48thing that you got to really understand about that that this is a business man
- 9:53you gotta like say protect your reputation man you've been running the show
- 9:56for six years that's what you want to do is man lock up your paycheck yeah a
- 10:00lot of things i don't think a lot of comics understand like it is a business
- 10:04and you could be the funniest person in the world But if it doesn't fit the venue,
- 10:08they might not want sexual type of jokes or whatever it is.
- 10:13If they're hiring me and they say, absolutely not.
- 10:16I'm not going to book somebody. I know that's all they do is the opposite of
- 10:20what you. But then they take it personal. Like, well, you won't book me.
- 10:25It would be terrible for me to book you. I'm not going to lose my business for
- 10:29you to have five minutes set. Yeah.
- 10:31I've done that a couple of times. On accident. On accident. They would come
- 10:35back up to me. I'm like, well, you know what?
- 10:37Weigh down the rules to me. Just explain to me what type of comedy is something.
- 10:41What do you want? What is your audience and stuff like that?
- 10:43Because, yeah, it can get, um, comedy is subjective.
- 10:47It is very subjective. And sometimes, you know, saying what's funny to one comedian
- 10:51is not going to be funny to a hundred other people in the audience. Yeah.
- 10:54What the fuck? And everybody loves the unpredictability of a comedian until
- 10:59it goes wrong. Yeah, until it becomes unpredictable.
- 11:02It's crazy, guys, until then. Shit.
- 11:06That's hilarious. And so now, not only are you doing the shows up in Rockland,
- 11:10you also have the show out in Napa.
- 11:13Yeah. So I do a monthly show.
- 11:16Every third Thursday, we do a show out in Rockland.
- 11:19I mean, not in Rockland, in Napa, at B-Bubbly. it's a tasting room in downtown
- 11:24and we do the comedy behind the bar yeah yeah yeah yeah so I'll be to that show
- 11:30that's a good show man that's a good show cause people drunk off of wine is
- 11:34different than people drunk off of like Hennessy or yeah,
- 11:38or a wine bottle thrown in my head or people just drunk off of beer it's two
- 11:44it's three totally different audiences you get like the sophisticated people
- 11:47like ha ha ha ha ha or they're just laid back and they're sleepy so yeah But
- 11:52nothing really pops off at the tasting rooms in Napa.
- 11:58Yeah, that's a fun room. I've been to that room before and stuff like that. So that's always a...
- 12:02Honestly, though, it is a difficult room sometimes just because you have people from everywhere.
- 12:06You know, Napa's kind of like a tourist town. Yeah. So you might be like,
- 12:10oh, yeah, I got this joke about Vacaville.
- 12:12And it's like, this guy's like, I'm from Michigan. What the hell's Vacaville?
- 12:15Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm from Yuba City. I'm from Yuba City. They're like, what?
- 12:19Where's that at? What is that? that they're uh yuba city where you say the punchline
- 12:23and they just stare at you because they have no idea what you're talking about
- 12:26huh it's like i guess it was funny he's laughing the comedian's laughing so
- 12:30i guess it's funny wherever truck he's at yeah so yeah we got a truck.
- 12:38Man and then you've also been so you've been um doing that show you also got
- 12:43the show at the uh The Punchline.
- 12:45Yeah. So you're also the open mic. Yeah. So every fourth Wednesday,
- 12:48I do open mic at Punchline.
- 12:51And I think in April, every Wednesday, I think we're going to have open mic.
- 12:58So basically, it's going to be for sure every fourth Wednesday.
- 13:01But when they have open Wednesdays, I just go ahead and do open mic just to
- 13:04feel rather than just have a room sitting there. Yeah. Yeah.
- 13:08What was the process like? How did you get hooked up with hosting the open mic at the Punchline?
- 13:13Honestly, I think it was either a referral. Nobody officially told me.
- 13:17I just got an email that said a couple people thought you would be a good fit
- 13:21for doing open mic. Are you interested?
- 13:24And I was just like, let's give it a shot because I know we needed one.
- 13:27I'm like, how many years did we, me and you, run around from this bar to this bar to that bar?
- 13:33Can we not just have one night? night yeah yeah
- 13:36i mean yeah you know exactly you know exactly what it's talking about
- 13:38that's why i was producing so many shows last year just
- 13:41because i was like man i need this stage time man wherever wherever
- 13:45i could get a room at to open up a room to tell these jokes man yeah let me
- 13:48do it because i mean we got a at one point we had a lot of open mics it felt
- 13:52like yeah like we had a lot like at one point like probably like pre-pandemic
- 13:56we was having like three comedy open mics a night at least and then like different
- 14:01like music open mics that they would be friendly And then, like,
- 14:03the comedians go up and tell jokes.
- 14:05But then after the pandemic, it kind of slowed down.
- 14:08And I feel like it started even, like, we're at a point right now where it's
- 14:11kind of, like, I mean, we have a lot of open mics compared to,
- 14:14like, other cities and stuff like that.
- 14:16But, like, it's still not enough for, like, for Sacramento because we got a
- 14:20lot of comedians up here.
- 14:21We got a lot. I don't think I realized how many rooms and shows we had until the world shut down.
- 14:28Like, a lot of stuff didn't come back. Yeah. Yeah. But like I remember that
- 14:32even back then, I mean, I knew what I was doing a little bit in comedy,
- 14:35but I was doing three shows a week.
- 14:37Yeah. Yeah. Like I don't even know what I'm doing. Yeah. But if I've been on
- 14:41that track now, I've probably been on 12 shows a week. Mm hmm. Mm hmm.
- 14:44I was like, I remember I was even just doing a show out of out of a bookstore
- 14:47just because we had so many rooms.
- 14:50Shout out to Carol's books. It's not around. I got shut down because the damn
- 14:53pandemic. But like that's just how it was. I went anywhere.
- 14:55There was a it wasn't it. It didn't have to be a comedy room.
- 14:58I was like, if there was four walls, we had a comedy room. We was doing shows up here and shit.
- 15:03Yeah, your old room. I'm like, can I even talk loud in here?
- 15:06It's like a library. It's like, shh.
- 15:09I'm going to tell the joke. Yeah, that was why we had like, especially, oh, my God.
- 15:14Because that was off of Del Paso. It was bad then, too, because the homeless situation was bad.
- 15:21So we got a lot of homeless bums.
- 15:24We got a whole lot of homeless bums.
- 15:26They didn't even come for comedy. They just came for shelter.
- 15:35We ain't even here for no jokes we just we just
- 15:38we just here for a seat and a heater that's it
- 15:41man we oh my word yeah but yeah now we backed out in the pandemics over with
- 15:47and stuff like that trying to get these rooms back up but it feels like they're
- 15:50coming up and then they get to shut down get it open up they shut it back down
- 15:53it is just kind of like yeah i don't know like i feel I feel like the whole dynamic has changed,
- 15:59like what people used to do or they don't have the money that they used to.
- 16:03Like, I just feel like we used to do a lot of extra stuff that you can't really do now.
- 16:07And it reflect like you better have a great product to get a bunch of people in any room now.
- 16:11Yeah. Like, look at the movie theater. I don't care what comes out. They ain't going.
- 16:15No, hell no. Hell no, man.
- 16:18That's another thing I was going to bring up, too, because I was reading this
- 16:22article the other day from this casting director.
- 16:24And she was just talking about how like just he would
- 16:27just try to break into like like the film side right now is
- 16:30social media is very heavy you gotta have like that huge
- 16:33huge huge like social media phone but i'm not really the type
- 16:36of comedian that like yeah it's gonna be on like my
- 16:39like instagram every day just be like yeah look at me
- 16:41yeah brushing my teeth yeah yeah or
- 16:45like like like doing skits and stuff like
- 16:48that like oh yeah if i do it it's gotta be i don't
- 16:51want to say for a purpose because you know building up a fan base build up
- 16:54an audience on on social media is a purpose but they're
- 16:57like for me i just feel like there's like there's just
- 16:59gotta be something something more to probably because like when
- 17:02i was when i got started into trying to pursue this entertainment
- 17:05stuff like the like social media was not a thing
- 17:08at all so it was always like in the back of my mind about stuff like that do
- 17:13you think about that type of stuff no i definitely i get what you're saying
- 17:17because i think it just comes down to personality like Like some people have
- 17:21it and they like to do the skits and they like to walk around with the camera
- 17:24and that's on them. I'm not. That's not my personality.
- 17:27Like I feel weird doing that. Yeah. Like it's just not. Now,
- 17:31I know sometimes you just have to do certain stuff or whatever.
- 17:33Might be shooting a skit or whatever with some people. So you might have to.
- 17:36But me personally, like how I actually feel, it feels weird to just get up and
- 17:41walk around places with my phone in my hand and be like, look at me doing fun
- 17:44stuff. Wish you were here. Yeah.
- 17:47But you know who has made it? who kind of like does
- 17:49have the blueprint down for that the whole social media thing and just being
- 17:54interactive with people is Lance oh yeah Lance is great with it yeah but I don't
- 17:59I don't even think that's an act when I go to the mall with Lance he's the same
- 18:03guy he is on social media I'm like will you leave that person alone you don't
- 18:07know them I don't know I don't know.
- 18:09What is wrong with you? It's funny. No, yeah, but, yeah, shout out to Lance
- 18:13Woods, though, because Lance Woods actually helped me launch this podcast.
- 18:17That's cool. Because, yeah, he was the very first guest that I had.
- 18:19I was like, man, I'm just trying something new out, bro. I don't know what the fuck I'm doing.
- 18:22So, I know it's all good, bro. I'll slide through. So, yeah,
- 18:24no. Yeah, definitely shout out to Lance Woods, for sure.
- 18:26Nah, Lance, that's my dog, for real. I have no idea why he even took me under
- 18:31his wing, but he was one of the first people when I started.
- 18:34Because I remember I was going to do a comedy class.
- 18:37He was like, man, you don't need that. just meet me at the club so so
- 18:41i met him at uh strikes yeah he had a
- 18:44show down there one night and i'm bowling alley yeah okay drew burke
- 18:48show was down there and i went down there and i think it was uh him and it was
- 18:52j rich drew and i can't remember who all else was on the show but i didn't know
- 18:56anybody in comedy but he uh i kept running into the land so and then i went
- 19:01to that show and then i anything after that i think maybe two days later we
- 19:05went to san francisco and he was He was like, you can roll with me.
- 19:08I'm sitting there chilling in the back. He was like, good news, bro. I got you some time.
- 19:13I'm like, I don't want no time. I've done one open mic, and that was two days ago.
- 19:18Oh, shit. I ended up going on stage. How did that set go?
- 19:23Honestly, it went way better than I thought. Because I thought I was set up big time.
- 19:27Because when he got me, he was like, I got you some time, bro.
- 19:30I'm like, I'm back there pacing back and forth.
- 19:32It's packed in this place. He's pacing back and forth.
- 19:36And then he has Brian Hicks brings me out. And so it's Brian's room.
- 19:40And he's like, ladies and gentlemen, you're going to love this guy.
- 19:42He's been crushing it all over the country.
- 19:44Ladies and gentlemen, please stand up and put your hands together.
- 19:47And in my head, I'm like, why did you put these expectations on me?
- 19:50I've done three minutes, period.
- 19:53But I went out there. I remember I did some hip hop joke I had back then.
- 19:58And I did something else about when people in the club, when they step on your
- 20:03shoes, And that's like, it's like hopscotch trying to go through the club,
- 20:06not to step when you're in a black club.
- 20:08And they loved that. And I was like, God bless. Good night. And I remember I was like, thank God.
- 20:14Yeah, that's always bad, especially with like your, like you first start getting into stand up.
- 20:19And like, like I said, with the, like, with the, like the, I call it like the
- 20:23next class, the next class up.
- 20:25Like whenever they like give you like that time, you're like,
- 20:28bro, I don't know if I'm ready for this.
- 20:29It's always that kind of like that, that antsy feeling. I have no idea how this
- 20:32is going to go and shit like that. Cause I think, um, so one comedian,
- 20:35uh, Dave Gaskins, I don't even think he does stand up anymore,
- 20:38but I ran into him like last week and stuff like that. But like, yeah, like I went to go.
- 20:44Sacramento punchline bro just to go just to check it out just to
- 20:46support the show and comedy and stuff all like that he's like
- 20:49bro i'm gonna get you some stage time i'm like no that's okay don't worry about it he's like
- 20:52you play with me bro you play no i'm gonna get you some stage i'm gonna get
- 20:55you some stage time i'm like nah bro you play you play it so i
- 20:58went downstairs to those smoke with andre bailey and shit like that we just spoke
- 21:01and then they still somebody's like just like hey buddy they looking for you
- 21:03they look at me like well what did i do i didn't
- 21:06pay my check i didn't do nothing like nah
- 21:09man you about to go up on stage bro you got like a minute to get up up here
- 21:11so i'm over here got over here fucking smoking so i'm over running up as fast
- 21:15as i can bro i'm over here jump on stage but i still got like the smoke in my
- 21:19lungs i'm over here i'm over like coughing people just see the smoke they think
- 21:24the capitol building on fire yeah it looks like.
- 21:27Like a monster was attacking like but i was
- 21:31like this is not good at all man this is not good at all
- 21:34but y'all learn from there always be prepared if somebody tells you to get
- 21:36a stage time time yeah stage time so be
- 21:39prepared for that oh yeah i think it was tony roberts he told
- 21:42me if you show up at the club just be prepared just
- 21:45in case so anytime i go to a club i at least go through a couple jokes in my
- 21:49head just in case because it's been a couple times it's like somebody didn't
- 21:53show up you're here like yeah all right let's do it yeah that's also a important
- 21:57thing too man just showing up just showing up to support because you never know
- 22:00what that could turn into and like you You say you have a brother.
- 22:03I see you a lot on top of you hang out with like Lance and Tony Roberts and stuff like that.
- 22:08I feel like that's like when I, just from my eyes, from my perspective,
- 22:11I see like those are like the two like mentors or influences that really like kind of like.
- 22:16You know, say somebody to take you under the wing and like teach you things
- 22:18and stuff like that. Yeah.
- 22:20So I told you me and Lance were cool. And then that just happened by association,
- 22:24with Tony because Tony and Lance are like best friends.
- 22:27So then we would all just end up hanging out or whatever. And he thought I was pretty funny.
- 22:32So then he, he invited me to do a weekend with him.
- 22:35It was all guest sets, but it was at a Tommy T's and a Rancho.
- 22:40And I did pretty good that weekend and I
- 22:43was that time I was only six months into comedy and I
- 22:47forgot the lady's name they used to run it maybe you remember they used
- 22:50to run they used to run the Tommy T's yeah so the white lady she
- 22:53had them glasses but I don't remember her name it wasn't it sounds I feel like
- 22:56it was like just like a two-letter name like in syllable like AJ or JD or something
- 22:59I don't know I can't remember but yeah but yeah so she she saw me that weekend
- 23:04and so she was like she hit me up maybe that Monday afterwards and I remember
- 23:08I was at my job and she was like do you you want to do a weekend?
- 23:11She's like, next weekend, we got Marsha Warfield coming in. So maybe you can
- 23:15just open up for somebody. Hell yeah, let's do it.
- 23:17So then I go, I do, I do it. But then I get there. She don't know how young I am in the game.
- 23:23She's like, just go up there and do maybe 12 minutes and then we'll bring Marsha
- 23:28up. I got seven minutes to my name. Yeah.
- 23:32So I go up there and I play it cool in front of her. I go upstairs and I'm just
- 23:36trying to put any notes or anything together. What was that one thing I thought about?
- 23:40I saw some kind of way I powered through and got through that and made it through
- 23:44the next line. And luckily, the second show got canceled.
- 23:49So luckily, but I survived it. But yeah, it was it was rough at first.
- 23:53But yeah, I don't know why Tony took a liking to me, but he did.
- 23:58So that's like Lance and Tony. Those are both my homies for real.
- 24:01Yeah. So what's it like having those two type of guys?
- 24:05Mentors uh influences in the game just like could
- 24:08constantly be in your ear somebody that you could text to for advice on
- 24:11how to handle the business because like i said as as as much
- 24:14like the comedy scene up here is fucking strong like
- 24:17there's a strong ass comedy scene for the aspect of just how many
- 24:20comedians there are and they're just how many like hitters
- 24:23there are just like making moves but to have like probably like
- 24:26the two the two biggest ones oh you know
- 24:29in the city what's it to like having those two as like as i
- 24:31said mentors people that you could like talk to
- 24:34about shit and not even on the comedy team you just talk to about life yeah
- 24:38no it's i say it's
- 24:41cool because like with lance i feel like they're both at
- 24:43two totally different stages you know like tony isn't that like legend
- 24:46status so he's been he's seen he's
- 24:49done everything but lance is on his ass like
- 24:52lance is coming up in the game big time so it's kind of
- 24:55like i get to see what he would like the the finished product
- 24:58and what you what it takes to get to that product but
- 25:01at the same time man like i'm more laid back
- 25:04and quiet but we're all just clowns like when we
- 25:07get together it's random we even talk about comedy we either cracking jokes
- 25:11on each other talking about something totally unrelated to what we got going
- 25:14on yeah and lance and tony is like herding cats they are they're all over the
- 25:18place they're like they are best buddies we got like i'm on the road with them I'm like,
- 25:25good Lord, I'm taking care of children.
- 25:30But those are the type of relationships that you want, like,
- 25:33because you want to have those type of relationships with like comedians where
- 25:35you don't have to be a comedian.
- 25:37Like, OK, I could just be like I could just be Marcus right now or I could just
- 25:40I could just sit back and be buddy around this person. I don't worry about being the fucking comedian.
- 25:44Because I'm sure you've experienced like maybe a newer comic and he knows who
- 25:48you are, but he's putting on a show.
- 25:51He's not being himself like that's annoying. annoying like yeah stop
- 25:54trying to make me laugh just be funny naturally but
- 25:57yeah i was thinking about that look at that guy huh
- 26:00yeah yeah yeah
- 26:03no yeah most definitely yeah yeah especially yeah especially when i was doing
- 26:06the brooms last year what about this i might bro
- 26:09just go up to you what about this premise yeah
- 26:12all these people saying in the audience those are the people you got to worry
- 26:15about don't worry about my being bro just man you come up make sure
- 26:17you're doing good make sure your head is on your shoulders bro and other than that
- 26:20we could be cool and stuff like like that so you got
- 26:23it so you went on you've been on the road with them you got any any interest
- 26:26in any stories about being on the road with them that you could talk about or
- 26:29just being on the road in general i've been done many many
- 26:32days but the one thing that did stick out tony gave
- 26:34me an opportunity to go back to north carolina and perform in
- 26:38front of my family and people i hadn't seen since i graduated high school when
- 26:42they actually came out which was weird because you know i was a quiet dude in
- 26:45school so i'm like it might be five people but nah probably maybe 30 to of 40
- 26:51people throughout the weekend came through and checked me out. And it was cool though.
- 26:55I was like, for me, that was kind of like a dream because it's just like.
- 26:59Being from a small town, go all the way to California and then get to come back with Lance and Tony.
- 27:04You're not just like, hey, well, I got to do that one bar that one night.
- 27:07That was fun. It's like, no, I'm coming back to a comedy club with two monsters.
- 27:11So for me, that was great. So they was looking at you like, OK, that's that bar.
- 27:16Yeah, he's not full of shit. I thought it was live. I swear I did. It's California, boy.
- 27:21That was Eddie Murphy. No idea. I've never seen it. That's how it is.
- 27:26We don't do that up here. That's one thing I will say. When I say California,
- 27:31it doesn't matter where.
- 27:32They think I run into damn Britney Spears and Eddie Murphy and damn Kim Kardashian, that Rite Aid.
- 27:38I've never seen any of these people. I live in Sacramento. I see Slamson.
- 27:42Yeah, I might be lucky. I might be lucky to run into one of the G League players.
- 27:49Maybe a radio DJ, maybe somebody from 1025 if I'm lucky.
- 27:55Keith but yeah maybe slams in his centerfolds but
- 27:57other than that yeah yeah stealing his mascot stealing
- 28:01his mascot just get in a lap dance just hit no suit it's like this doesn't go
- 28:06gotta relax even I need time shit that's funny man that was yeah this is just
- 28:14a side story but like I used to be that I wasn't I used to be the mascot for
- 28:19for golden one credit union,
- 28:21union so not like you know not like the kings but like golden
- 28:24one check stuff no i was a
- 28:28golden retriever that's what's up but we but i used to work a lot with samson
- 28:32he that boy pretty fucking wild and stuff like he he was stuff i got fired though
- 28:37because i was wearing laker socks one time to one of the promo events they was
- 28:40like buddy man get it to the mascot i was all right cool man so i'm over getting
- 28:44they had no dress room for me or whatever so i'm like all right
- 28:47this kid just right here. And I took him off. They was like, dude, Lakers socks?
- 28:50I'm all like, well, yeah. Like, you know we're about to do some Kings promo,
- 28:54right? I was like, I guess so. I was like, yeah.
- 28:57But I'm a Lakers fan. I don't know what to do. That's what's up.
- 29:00You're taking it too far. Took it too far. And they said, yeah, you can't come back.
- 29:04He's repping the wrong set. They was all like, yeah, you got to keep that on.
- 29:07Yeah, you got to set tripping.
- 29:09It's like, keep that on the low,
- 29:11low. But you had to work through with the Kings. But you said earlier.
- 29:14Bobby Jackson was the person that brought you out here and stuff like that.
- 29:17Yeah. So what was that connection like?
- 29:20I see you doing, like, not necessarily work with the Kings, but up at the G
- 29:24League, the Stockton Arena, and all that stuff.
- 29:27Yeah, so basically him and my uncle were best friends in high school,
- 29:31and I was just a kid on the sideline.
- 29:34Like, I would watch them go play ball. They would play every day,
- 29:37and they played on the same high school team together.
- 29:40And Bobby told him, he said, if I ever make it,
- 29:43actually make it, I'm gonna come back for you so
- 29:46not me he told my uncle that I will come back for you so
- 29:49once he got once he got to Sacramento my uncle
- 29:52was just like kind of like in a rut in my life
- 29:55I just want to start over completely and Bobby said I remember what I told you
- 30:00I got you so he brought my uncle out my uncle was out here probably four years
- 30:04before I even came to California and then I came out here to visit him and I
- 30:10don't know it was just it was just I think Sacramento was the The first place I ever went to,
- 30:14I wasn't like, I'm ready to go back home.
- 30:17Because most of the time I would be like, yeah, I had fun in D.C.
- 30:19I had fun in Atlanta. That was cool. But I'm going to get my ass back home.
- 30:22This was like one of the first places I came to. I was like,
- 30:25you know, I actually like it out here. Like, I might stay a couple extra days.
- 30:28So I thought I just kept going back and forth, back and forth.
- 30:31And I'm not going to lie. It didn't hurt having an NBA friend.
- 30:34You know, they gave me all kind of perks.
- 30:36I don't have on the right clothes. Who cares? Come in the club.
- 30:40Now I got to wear a damn Easter suit to go in the right age.
- 30:44Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But I don't know, just being out here was different
- 30:48in the vibe. And I was just like, let's give it a shot.
- 30:52So that's when my uncle, he ended up going back because he still had his son back in North Carolina.
- 30:58But for me, I was just like, this is a fresh start. I don't have any kids,
- 31:02so let's do it. So that's why I'm here now.
- 31:05Yeah. I go like, this is a true story. Like, I actually had a name drop you
- 31:09one time and stuff like that because I ran into, well, Bobby Jackson likes to party.
- 31:14Bobby Johnson likes to party.
- 31:18And I ran into him. I ran into him at a... I can't remember what the name of
- 31:22the bar was. Faces. No, not Faces. It was at Folsom.
- 31:27Powerhouse, I think it was. Oh, yeah. I ran into him at Powerhouse.
- 31:30I was like, Bobby, man, Bobby. He's like, yeah, yeah, it's Bobby.
- 31:35It's like, man, you know my boy Marcus, man. That's my boy right there.
- 31:38He's like, oh, yeah, for sure. Come party with us, bro. Come party with us. Oh, yeah.
- 31:41You owe me a drink buddy I do owe you a drink me, Bobby, some drinks and some snow bunnies.
- 31:52Folks, y'all trying to get killed. Get out of there. What are you doing?
- 31:56Bobby's like six something, so ain't nobody attacking Bobby.
- 31:58Then I was just pretending to be the security up until that point.
- 32:01So once I got in, nobody was like, fuck, it would be a shoot.
- 32:04But yeah, dude, I'll owe you a drink next time. I appreciate that.
- 32:07I had to name drop you one time.
- 32:10I was like, yeah, Bobby, man, Marcus is my dude right there.
- 32:13He was like, oh yeah, for sure, man, come party with us, bro.
- 32:15Come get some drinks. I was like, for sure. We up in here.
- 32:18He was also up at Chris Webber. You know Chris Webber as well?
- 32:22Yeah, but that just came from being with Bobby back in the day.
- 32:26At that time, Bobby was married, but Webb wasn't.
- 32:31So we were used to going out all the time, but then when Bobby and his lady
- 32:35got serious, he stopped going out.
- 32:36Webb was like, well, I ain't married, so if y'all want to go out, we can still go out.
- 32:40So me and my uncle started going out with him, and we just ended up building
- 32:43a friendship to how we ended up being cool.
- 32:46But I feel like a lot of it is just like personality, because he's laid back, I'm laid back.
- 32:51He's super into music. I am too. So we've just all had that connection.
- 32:55And also, I've never been like, not trying to be arrogant about it,
- 32:59but I've never just been like, oh, my God, it's Chris Webber.
- 33:02I've just never had that in me.
- 33:03If anything, I talk crazy to him, and that makes him like me more.
- 33:06Like, you can't talk to me like that. Why not?
- 33:09You treat him like a human and stuff like that. A lot of people are like,
- 33:12oh, my God, it's a Sacramento legend, Chris Webber.
- 33:14But he's just all like that. Yeah, then I'll be like, oh, look at me.
- 33:17I'm here for Chris Webber. Who cares? Can we go? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:22Which is, that's always cool when you could have that type of,
- 33:24that dynamic with people. Because like I said, it could be just being somebody in that spotlight.
- 33:30I can imagine it like a lot of people just trying to get something from you.
- 33:35So when there's somebody that comes around you where they can be like,
- 33:38oh, I can just genuinely connect with this person. I can sit back and chill.
- 33:40This person don't want nothing from me except just good convo.
- 33:43Those are the type of relationships that you want in this business.
- 33:46I think that's something I learned from Bobby, though. Just being on the outside
- 33:50and watching him, like coming up.
- 33:52From the Kings to start and into retirement.
- 33:55And just seeing how people treat you and how things go and how you can be on
- 33:59top of the world and everybody loves you and as your popularity goes, so do they.
- 34:03You get back popular, they come out of the wood where, hey, remember me?
- 34:07Hey, I didn't forget about you.
- 34:09And it made me realize none of it's real, man.
- 34:12And I know Bobby has the same problems that everybody else. I watched him.
- 34:16I was there with him all the time.
- 34:17And same arguments, same everything.
- 34:20You just got money now. You got the same problems. them so that's
- 34:23why i look at them the same way like just you know before
- 34:26that you would look at movie stars and be like man they got it made
- 34:29whatever whatever they at work yeah they at work that is not fun they're like
- 34:34leave me alone bro don't talk to me right now bro i'm over here trying to i
- 34:38mean it looks like like i'm memorizing lies and it looks fun but like no this
- 34:41is work or even even award shows like they think it's so great i'm working i'm
- 34:46trying not to mess this up i'm
- 34:48trying to not have a terrible look. I don't want to be a meme tomorrow.
- 34:51Yeah. Because my shoulder sleeve came down or something stupid.
- 34:55Like, it's a lot more than people don't even think about. Yeah.
- 34:59No, yeah, I've seen some shit on some movie sets, man, where people just be,
- 35:03like, stressing out, just yelling.
- 35:05I'm all like, God damn, man, we're supposed to be making a movie.
- 35:08I thought we were the jury, but no, we just at work.
- 35:12And then soon as they say, cut, start the movie, there you go.
- 35:16It's a totally different person.
- 35:17Yeah, yeah, totally different people, man.
- 35:20What are your goals and aspects? Do you want to, like, get to that level in the comedy game?
- 35:25Like do you eventually want to like be in movies
- 35:28and all that good jazz honestly it
- 35:31sounds dumb but i i go back and forth because i do love comedy but sometimes
- 35:36i feel like i probably want to get into writing and be more behind the scenes
- 35:40because i do love the comedy but just sometimes it's a lot just because it's
- 35:44just not my personality like we were talking about like i'm not the look at me guy.
- 35:49And a lot of times you have to be that sometimes i don't feel like being that
- 35:53guy but it's part of the job.
- 35:55So it's kind of like, but I also think it's maybe a learning process for me.
- 35:59Like it is a job, like just turn it on, do your 30 minutes or whatever you got
- 36:03to do. And then you're done.
- 36:05But people don't realize like, yeah, I'm only doing 30 minutes,
- 36:08but I've been thinking about this 30 minutes since I opened my eyes this morning. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 36:13And then once I get off the stage, I'm going to be thinking of that 30 minutes again.
- 36:16It's going to be a whole different tone of voice. I'm like, man,
- 36:18I missed this tagline. I could have done this better.
- 36:20I could But it's definitely a lot that goes into the whole process of just trying
- 36:25to knock out that 30 minutes. Yeah.
- 36:29So, so you don't, so you, you go back forth, which I totally get, I totally get.
- 36:35That's one reason why I started this whole podcast, just because I was all like,
- 36:39man, I'm not like the social, like we were going back to like the whole social
- 36:44media aspect and stuff like that.
- 36:45But people are just all like, you got to have something, you got to do something.
- 36:49So I was like, all right, shit, I guess I'll just, everybody else is doing a podcast.
- 36:53Let me just start up this train and just see where it goes. But it's also been
- 36:55beneficial for me, just like I say, from hearing the perspective of other people just like us.
- 37:01Because like I said, we all like how you were just saying, like,
- 37:02we all go through the same things in life outside of the comedy game.
- 37:06It's all the same. So just seeing what other people's perspective is,
- 37:10it helps put like that perspective in me too.
- 37:13Just all like, okay, this whole entire like fame or whatever you may be.
- 37:18Because I feel like a lot of times it's something that people outside of the business put on you.
- 37:23They kind of put that aspect on you. And you're like, man, you got to be doing
- 37:25this. You should be doing this. I'm like, no, I just got to be me.
- 37:28I just got to be me. I just got to be chilling. And everybody has a bright idea
- 37:31what you should do with your life.
- 37:33Yeah. You don't do any of this stuff you tell me to do.
- 37:36You should get up at 7 and do this. You don't do any of that.
- 37:41But is that easy the way you're telling me you do it? Yeah.
- 37:44You ain't never wrote a joke for you to give me a tag.
- 37:48You ain't never been on an audition to tell me I shouldn't be in this movie.
- 37:51Be you a i was like yeah let me just let me just do me because you know it's
- 37:55it's this whole this whole idea like
- 37:58being like this hollywood stuff and everything like that man it could be.
- 38:03Hectic it could be a lot so no i definitely get where
- 38:05you're talking about just doing the whole behind the scenes so that's why i
- 38:08was trying to start it last year like just trying
- 38:11to produce more just produce more produce more produce because i was like that
- 38:14seems more like on the behind the scenes type of detail like even if i don't
- 38:17want to have to host the show i mean at least producing it i'm still involved
- 38:22in some type of aspect but i don't know gotta be in the limelight don't gotta
- 38:25be in the spotlight to where now afterwards everybody's coming up to me like
- 38:29oh And then they want that attention because, man,
- 38:31my social battery be done after a while.
- 38:33Yeah, I'll be honest. Like when I do weekends, I'm done because I'm just not
- 38:38normal, like not speaking and being the mayor and shaking hands and kissing
- 38:42babies. So when I'm done, I'm done.
- 38:44Like Monday, I'm like, it's over. Thank you, Jesus. Yeah.
- 38:48Yeah, I was going to ask that because like what, like after like doing like
- 38:50so many shows, do you have like that kind of like, I want to say like that wind down period?
- 38:54Like I'm just, I'm just like, I'm just not doing nothing today. day yeah
- 38:57i will have those one day not not many but yeah
- 39:01if we like on the road for a minute or something that one that
- 39:03day after i'm chilling because i'm mentally i'm
- 39:06done and i just want to get back focused and then the next day let's go get
- 39:10them but i need me at least one day to chill but even after shows like i can't
- 39:14just come home and get in the bed like i don't care if it was a good show or
- 39:17a bad show like i can't just go to sleep like that adrenaline doesn't cut off
- 39:21for a minute you just be you just be laying down you just eyes wide open and
- 39:24then like the second you you close up,
- 39:26you'd be thinking of something and then you just right back to being alerted. You'd be like, ah, damn.
- 39:30I'd be feeling like I'd be like the laziest woke person ever.
- 39:35I'd be wanting to not do anything, but then just the way my brain operates,
- 39:40I'm like, I don't know, I gotta get up, I gotta do this, I gotta write this
- 39:42tag that I just found out about this.
- 39:43Or, you know, I'm like, now I gotta try to find the next job.
- 39:46Where's the next gig coming from? It's just...
- 39:48I begin to wind down and stuff like that. Yeah, I'm the same way, though, sometimes.
- 39:52Like, I need to just chill for a second. Next thing I know, I'm knee-deep in
- 39:56something on YouTube. I'm like, I didn't rest at all. Yeah. Yeah.
- 40:02And that especially do with this, because, like, whatever I talk to,
- 40:06like, most people, I'm like, well, what do y'all do to, like,
- 40:09you know, just to relax and wind down?
- 40:10But, oh, I watch TV and stuff like that. I was like, well, shit,
- 40:13I can't really just sit back and watch TV or watch anything,
- 40:16because that still just puts my
- 40:17mind right back into the whole aspect of entertainers and stuff like that.
- 40:22I'm all like, now I'm over here studying the actor, the way they're working,
- 40:25or if I just want to sit back and watch a comedy show or just watch some jokes
- 40:31or just hear somebody tell some jokes on YouTube, I'm all like,
- 40:34damn, that's a good tag. I could do this.
- 40:36Analyzing it. Yeah, it's totally different. So the whole wind down, it can get tricky.
- 40:40So I just got to do nothing. And I don't smoke weed no more either,
- 40:44so then that's the other aspect of it too. So now I'm just really like, just staring.
- 40:49Yeah, just staring up into the world. I'm like, why he did it and stuff like that.
- 40:54And then so, oh, yeah, one thing I wanted to talk to you about and stuff was the movie Ballbusters.
- 41:00Yeah. Was that your first time working on like a movie? It was. It was. Yeah. Okay.
- 41:05So how that even came about, my boy, Chris Michael Hawley, he had hit me up randomly.
- 41:10I was at my job at the time at Lexus. It was like, hey, man,
- 41:14they got these auditions at Comedy Spot.
- 41:16If you want in, you better come down here. And I'm like, I got to at least try.
- 41:20But I'm like, I never acted at all. Like, I didn't know anything.
- 41:23So I come down there and they ask me, they just say, do stand up.
- 41:27They do maybe 10 minutes of stand up. So I do stand up.
- 41:30And they had me do a couple of scenes or whatever to see if I would work out
- 41:34for this role or that role. A couple of them I did terribly on.
- 41:38Oh, and Lance came with me. So we both went out there.
- 41:41And basically I just did my set or
- 41:44whatever Lance did a couple things and it was
- 41:46kind of like kind of like a little mini talent show they were
- 41:49doing yeah yeah so some of them were like real deal actors I could tell I'm
- 41:53like why am I even in this they got headshots they got a resume they got a monologue
- 41:57what is this super proper I'm like I don't know what's happening right now but
- 42:02it was cool I honestly I just did that I did a couple minutes of stand-up and
- 42:05maybe two minutes I mean Two days later,
- 42:08I just get a call and it was like, hey, can you come do the such and such at McClellan Airport?
- 42:12I was like, all right, let's do it. Even when I got there, I had no idea what
- 42:15was going on. Here's the makeup chair.
- 42:17I'm like, okay. It's like makeup. No, no, no.
- 42:20I don't do makeup. What do you know about makeup? I'm like Paul's,
- 42:23but I want to make the movie.
- 42:26So, yeah, that's pretty much how it came about, man. He just looked,
- 42:29um, Holly looked out for me and it ended up working out, you know.
- 42:33And so what did you do on the, um, on the movie set? Oh, I was a security guard. Okay.
- 42:38So, uh, I just got to, I got to toss a couple of people out the door. That was about it.
- 42:42But I don't know. It was cool though. It was like just being on the scene,
- 42:45just seeing how, like how many times you have to shoot and trying to make it
- 42:49look natural when it's not natural.
- 42:51And like Jerry O'Connell was like, good job. because I actually tossed his ass out the door.
- 42:58So way to throw me around. It's like, make it look real. I was like,
- 43:00all right, get your ass out of here. I'm going to kick his ass real quickly.
- 43:04But yeah, I just thought the whole experience was good. You know,
- 43:07like it was funny just being on set and seeing how everything actually works.
- 43:11The guy with the boom mic, he dropped the shit accidentally.
- 43:14So then we had to reshoot the scene again. It was just like,
- 43:17I don't know. It was just cool for me to experience of it.
- 43:20Did y'all have lunch on set? uh afterward we
- 43:22had to wrap uh dinner i guess oh oh
- 43:25y'all had to after yeah that's that's that's one thing i know whenever
- 43:28i'm like i determine what a good movie set is by the lunch like if it's a good
- 43:33lunch you should i'm like all right cool we could i don't care what goes wrong
- 43:36whatever may be wrong as long as they got good lunch and a good craft service
- 43:39i'm like we can we could chill i'll be out here eating it's all good and stuff
- 43:43like that but no shout out to christopher michael Hawley,
- 43:46because funny story is Christopher,
- 43:50or Chris, he actually cast me in my very first movie.
- 43:54It was a movie called, what was it called? Oh, Left and Loose in the Lock.
- 43:59It was this definitely looking at uh yeah.
- 44:04Left and loose but i'm getting naked out here left and loose in the line it was just.
- 44:11It's like a truck stop movie oh my word it
- 44:13was a lot close close no it was this it was a stoner movie it was a stoner movie
- 44:19man it started like at the time it was the two biggest djs that was on uh one
- 44:23one oh two five so it was the specialist then waney wayne and they was just
- 44:28basically So there was two stoner security guards at this parking lot complex.
- 44:32And I was just one of the stoner kids or whatever. We were just chilling.
- 44:37And they ended up stealing like our snacks and shit like that.
- 44:40But that was, that was, that was, man, that was, I remember like,
- 44:45because he gave me my very first lines in a movie.
- 44:47He was like, is that your hand shaped like a gun?
- 44:50And like, that was my first line in a movie.
- 44:54But like, we went to, went to go check out the movie premiere.
- 44:57And I brought like my folks and a couple of my friends and we watched that shit.
- 45:00I was like, damn, buddy, you in a movie and shit. That's dope as shit.
- 45:02And then when, and then once it came out on DVD, I had like a big,
- 45:06like, like a house party to like watch that shit.
- 45:09And the whole entire scene that I was in got cut out.
- 45:13So you was at a house party. So I was just at a house party just watching this shit in the building.
- 45:18And I knew it too because like the scene where I was in where I was supposed
- 45:21to, where I was supposed to come up, it just like jumped and then I went to
- 45:23something else and I was just all like, got me. I was like, I got to get out of here.
- 45:28I put my mom to the side and I'm like, hey, I'm leaving. I was like,
- 45:30we're at your party. We're watching your movie. I'm like, no,
- 45:33I'm not in it. That's what's up. She's like, what do you mean? I'm like, I'm not in it.
- 45:36I was like, I'm not in the movie, man. They cut me out. They cut me out.
- 45:40So I just took off pissed. I was mad. They going to be like,
- 45:42that was a good-ass movie. I'm like, shut up.
- 45:45But yeah, no, shout out to Christopher Hawley because, yeah,
- 45:48he put me on first movie. And we're both alumni from Wheatland High School as well. Okay. Yeah.
- 45:52He used to have a little party animal in him back in the day. He used to cut a rug.
- 45:57I wouldn't doubt it. I wouldn't doubt it. Yeah. I've seen some of the pictures
- 46:00from him in high school and stuff like that. I was like, yeah,
- 46:02he probably, yeah, he used to get me. Shout out to.
- 46:04Oh, yeah. Yeah, no, in fact, because I did an open mic out in Yuba City,
- 46:10and somebody had just said, oh, man, you look like Christopher Hollis. I'm like, no, I don't.
- 46:14You just think all black people look alike. It's all good. No, not at all.
- 46:20Oh, yeah, I used to party. We partied. All right, cool.
- 46:24We could party, but I'm not him. I mean, nothing close to him.
- 46:28It's just like that. But, oh, yeah, speaking of Yuba City, man, shout out to Paul.
- 46:32He'll love that. Paul Nixon he loves
- 46:36attention no yeah every time every time we link up and
- 46:38brother it's a show or whatever we gotta do we gotta you know for Paul so shout
- 46:42out to Paul or even when I did your show out in Napa he just pulled up out of
- 46:45nowhere I'm sorry Paul and you're not even surprised not even surprised at all
- 46:50but yeah so shout out to Paul just for shout out to Paul just for being Paul
- 46:53for being you Paul shout out to you I remember,
- 46:57first time I met Paul was at was at how's this happening.
- 47:03We gonna do a whole segment on Paul real quick shut up first time I met Paul
- 47:08was at we was doing the comedy burger show,
- 47:11oh okay at Ongayo's thing and I did a joke about Yuba City and he just pulled
- 47:16me to the side like he was like the mafia and shit he's like so you from Yuba City huh,
- 47:21I'm like no maybe I don't know it's like nah man it's all good I'm from Yuba
- 47:27City too man you do your thing you do your thing Oh, yeah. So shout out to Paul.
- 47:32You just made his life. Yeah. Shout out to Paul. I'll try to bring Paul on,
- 47:36too. He'll bring a guest on this. Oh, my God.
- 47:41That's the homie right there, for sure. But, oh, yes.
- 47:44Before we do wrap up the whole podcast and all that good jazz,
- 47:47one thing that I always do when I bring people on is we do what was called the
- 47:51Mount Rushmore, which is basically your Mount Rushmore of comedians.
- 47:56And then, so yeah, I'll try to put you on the spot, but yeah,
- 48:00no, I'm trying to think as soon as you said that.
- 48:03I'd say for sure Pryor, he's on there. Pryor's on there.
- 48:09Eddie's on there. People get mad at me for saying that, but it's my life.
- 48:13Chris Tucker's on there for me. Okay.
- 48:15Because I would say he's a huge influence on me. Just that movie Rush Hour.
- 48:20I'm not an outgoing person, but I felt like if I was, that would be me.
- 48:24I would talk as much shit as he did in that movie. And I feel like that is me. That's me.
- 48:30Let me see. Who else? Who else? I don't know.
- 48:33Honestly, I got to put Tony Roberts on there. Yeah, I have to.
- 48:38Like, stage or at home watching TV. He's one of the funniest people I've ever met in my life.
- 48:44He said some of the craziest stuff for no reason that I've ever heard.
- 48:50So he's definitely going to be up there.
- 48:52Am I in my cross? I got one more? You got one more. Let me see. Let me see.
- 48:58Oh uh it's more
- 49:01i would say it's more tv than stand up but
- 49:04i have to say red fox okay i think sanford
- 49:08the sun is one of the greatest tv shows i've ever witnessed because
- 49:11for it to be made in the 70s and be
- 49:14funny right now is amazing and i
- 49:16don't mean just like little giggle like i can watch episodes now
- 49:19and be like that's hilarious real so that has
- 49:22he's he's my last member of the the top all right
- 49:25no i ain't mad at that list what do you sound about like with chris tucker i definitely
- 49:29get what you're saying as far as like there's always like
- 49:32that one comedian that we look at it would be all like that
- 49:35makes us look at it it would be like oh okay i can do that i could definitely
- 49:38do that as shit so you know i definitely get what you're saying with chris tucker
- 49:41and then one thing that i always find interesting which is why i always do like
- 49:44this whole mount rushmore thing is when i like especially like with comedians
- 49:47there's always like some somebody always names drop like a comedian that is
- 49:52like i don't want to say like like local, but like somebody that's like within our atmosphere,
- 49:55like how you say like with Tony Roberts and stuff like that,
- 49:57that accessibility and stuff like that, which again speaks to just the whole aspect of.
- 50:03Man, how strong the comedy scene is up here because it's not,
- 50:06because it's a legit, it's a legit top four.
- 50:07Like, putting Tony Roberts up there with those people, it's a legit thing, you know?
- 50:12But then, like, say, to be able to, like, they, like, they, like, they, like, right here.
- 50:17Like, we ain't got no choice but to grow and, like, if you have the opportunity
- 50:20to grow, learn from them because then eventually, man, 10, 15,
- 50:2420 years from now, shit, you're going to be on somebody's Mount Rushmore.
- 50:27But, like, with Tony, like, most people wouldn't even have paid attention to it.
- 50:32It was one of the first shows I did with him at Cobb's and it was mostly white
- 50:36and I could tell like he wasn't nervous but I know Tony mostly does black crowds
- 50:41so Tony goes out there and it was the shortest joke but it made everybody fall
- 50:46out he said I saw a white lady with yellow teeth she looked like a devil egg,
- 50:51the whole place fell out from that short
- 50:54little joke and from there he killed the rest of the
- 50:57night but it's just like something that little short like you can have dudes
- 51:01to write an hour our joke and don't get that laugh that he got from that one
- 51:04joke yeah because white people love like i get it i get it you're right you
- 51:13might be all of a sudden dude talk about barge yeah.
- 51:16You know her shit yeah no you don't so that's um no that's definitely what's
- 51:21up man that's definitely cool so so yeah so we had you said it was was it eddie
- 51:25murk no richard pryor yeah And then it was Murphy.
- 51:29Was it Murphy? No, it wasn't Murphy. No, it was Murphy. You said Murphy.
- 51:32So did you do five people?
- 51:33So I was like, well, you were looking at me. I'm like, OK, well,
- 51:36my bad. So, yeah, well, the black route rush for me.
- 51:40Somebody else. So, yeah. OK. Yes. Oh, yeah. You always bring one person extra.
- 51:44They don't tell you. Oh, yeah. So I brought my homeboy.
- 51:47You got a girl. You got a girl for my homie.
- 51:52All right the show all right cool so yeah
- 51:54so yeah we are gonna wrap up this episode like i said this episode was
- 51:57brought to you again by the comedy cash cow competition so
