Transcript
- 0:22Right. Good afternoon.
- 0:23Welcome Miller and Condon on a football Friday.
- 0:26It's the Iowa Sports Radio Network emanating from Des
- 0:29Moines sports station 106.3 KX and notes Trent Condon and Ken
- 0:34Miller to talk sports with you for the next couple of hours.
- 0:37And we appreciate you being with us wherever you're listening in
- 0:39the state of Iowa or anywhere on the I Heart app.
- 0:42Here's what's coming up with Trent and I In 20 minutes.
- 0:46We will have Tom Caker join us from hawkeyereport.com.
- 0:51The men's basketball non con schedule was released earlier
- 0:54this morning. Guessing that'll go over well
- 0:56with my Co host. It is.
- 0:59I I haven't complained about non conference scheduling in eight
- 1:02years. No, it's been only a couple.
- 1:04No, it's been more than that since they changed the debt
- 1:06system. When you play those tomato cans,
- 1:09when you have the BI games, it gets to hurt the RPI system.
- 1:13That was my push back. And when Freya McCaffrey would
- 1:15put out those garbage non conference schedules, it wasn't
- 1:18that. It was that you were playing the
- 1:19worst of the worst. And they are.
- 1:21And on top of it, those games hurt you when it came to
- 1:24strength the schedule when it changed to the net system where
- 1:26margin of victory and efficiency numbers are in there, that
- 1:30doesn't matter if you win those games by 3040 fifty points that
- 1:33is actually. Good for you.
- 1:34Well, it hurts the fan base. We'll put we'll leave it at that
- 1:36because it is AP, but I get what they're doing and it does make
- 1:40sense. But I used to like you and
- 1:41Canker getting into each other over that that topic here in the
- 1:45past anyways. And I was right.
- 1:47Maybe. Yeah, I agree with you.
- 1:48It was. It was awful.
- 1:50The year they got sent to Dayton that they would have played a
- 1:51better non conference schedule. If they would have played their
- 1:54by games were against decent teams, they wouldn't have been
- 1:56in Dayton that year. We'll talk to Tom Caker, then
- 1:59we'll talk to Mike Pommel, head up to Las Vegas, find out how
- 2:02these Thursday Night Football was for Circa as well as taking
- 2:06a look at some of the other numbers.
- 2:07By the way, if you are a Circa Iowa customer, you probably
- 2:13received the e-mail. If you did, make sure you open
- 2:16it because their app is about to change.
- 2:18We've been hearing that they've been upgrade this app and it
- 2:21sounds as though Iowa is maybe one of the 1st to go when it
- 2:25comes to this. So if you're a circuit customer,
- 2:27check that e-mail as it's going to require you to download the
- 2:31new app coming up here at the end of the month.
- 2:33But we'll pick Mike's brain on that when he joins us at 12:40.
- 2:37Bama, Bob, Trenton, I will go over a handful of college
- 2:40football games. We'll do that to kick off our
- 2:42number 2 and then we will make our picks before we vacate the
- 2:46premises and make way for off the bench with Sean Roberts and
- 2:51Lucas Strain football Friday night.
- 2:53Tonight the crew will be on the air at 6:00.
- 2:56I think they're covering 8 games in in central Iowa.
- 2:59Trent will be at Valley for Urbandale and Valley tonight.
- 3:03You can hear that game on the Bull 96.9 over on the FM dial,
- 3:08but if you're listening in Des Moines, you're already on the FM
- 3:10dial so just head down the dial. Old habits die hard.
- 3:13I do miss the 1460 I wonder if people still listen to.
- 3:16That they still do, yeah. They yeah, they're still.
- 3:18I know I would be there if I was a radio listener.
- 3:21You like the little extra static?
- 3:22Well. No, it's just old school.
- 3:25I guess you know where sports talk was for so many years.
- 3:28And but look at FM is the right thing.
- 3:31Anyways, I want to start with the Green Bay Packers because
- 3:37this team and in particular and syndicate Dave syndicate head
- 3:41cheese.com, he joins us talk Packers.
- 3:42He's our Packers guy talked about that defense yesterday and
- 3:47I don't recall seeing Jayden Daniels at any time, whether it
- 3:51be at LSU or since he got to here into the NFL two years ago
- 3:55being, I don't want to say taken out of the game, but he
- 4:00certainly and he threw a couple of touchdowns going to give him
- 4:02credit for that. But he didn't look like he was
- 4:04having his way with this particular defense last night.
- 4:08And Michael Parsons, he's a difference maker.
- 4:11And I and I thought it would the the reaction to the line was way
- 4:14over the top when it moved from 19 to 1 to 11 to one in the
- 4:18Super Bowl market. Boom, instantly being a non
- 4:21quarterback and you're going to see that big of a drop.
- 4:24But man, oh man, he's a difference maker on the field,
- 4:26whether he's getting to the quarterback or not.
- 4:29He was outstanding. Jordan Love has looked very
- 4:32solid. He.
- 4:32Really has. He looks like the guy we saw at
- 4:35the end of the year 2 years ago. And this defense is elite.
- 4:38And it's not just the Parsons part of it.
- 4:40There's a lot more that goes into it.
- 4:42The way those linebackers go. Daniels hasn't looked very good
- 4:45now two weeks in a row. And yeah.
- 4:47You saw him last week. I didn't against the Giants.
- 4:50We used to look at sophomore slumps and the like and you
- 4:54wonder. You're just left wondering week,
- 4:56week number. One the sophomore slumps, Drake
- 4:59may didn't look good right? Well, Knicks did not look good.
- 5:02McCarthy didn't look good. We didn't have a didn't have a
- 5:05freshman campaign, so to speak. We'll see where it goes.
- 5:08But I'm I'm anxious to see because this guy was setting the
- 5:10league on fire and was already being anointed as a top five
- 5:14quarterback in the league. We're two weeks into it.
- 5:16Washington came up against a real juggernaut last night.
- 5:19That's my take away on this that right Excuse me right now, the
- 5:23team from Wisconsin looks as though they're the best team in
- 5:27the North from what I've seen thus far.
- 5:30And it's them Eagles. Could you bet anybody else right
- 5:34now in the NFC that you'd feel comfortable with?
- 5:36It's those two, but I might sprinkle a little Buccaneer
- 5:40money in because I still, I'm still on Tampa, nobody out West.
- 5:45I wish I didn't have all those Rams tickets.
- 5:46I don't feel good about those. Obviously, the Niners worth
- 5:49their injuries. The Cardinals are going to mess
- 5:52around, win 9 or 10 football games and maybe sneak into the
- 5:55playoffs. But they'll draft 19th or 20th.
- 6:00Nobody else in the South. Well, we'll see Atlanta on on
- 6:03Sunday night against the Vikings.
- 6:06No, the answer is no, Trent. I think you're, I think you're
- 6:08right. Maybe I want to see a little
- 6:11more JJ McCarthy. I'll, I'll, I'll hold off on
- 6:14that, but it seems like right now it's the Eagles and it's the
- 6:18Packers. Yeah, right.
- 6:20And I can't say that in the AFC. I think there's a bunch of teams
- 6:23in the. AFC a lot more wide open it
- 6:25feels like over there. And yeah, that's a great start
- 6:29by Green Bay. It really is.
- 6:31Was impressed in Week 1, maybe even more impressed a Week 2
- 6:34short week, being able to do that against a Washington team.
- 6:37I think we both thought were going to hang around at minimum
- 6:39and they just completely took it out of it.
- 6:41So it's they got the running game with Jacobs.
- 6:44I think he got the pieces there. I, I think it was, I don't know
- 6:47if it was on the broadcast last night or if I heard of somebody
- 6:49else. The Packers don't have a #1
- 6:51receiver, but boy, they got a bunch of #2 and number.
- 6:54Three. They do.
- 6:54That's true. And the depth that they have
- 6:56there, they try to get Golden involved.
- 6:58Missed him on that. Deep shot by an inch.
- 7:01Just missed on that one. His speed is going to be a
- 7:03factor though this season as he can see them using and the
- 7:06floor. We're a good coach.
- 7:08Uh huh. And Jalen Reed is going to be up
- 7:10for how long now? Collarbone broken.
- 7:12Is that month six weeks? I don't know something.
- 7:14I'm just guessing. I'm just guessing.
- 7:16But yeah, if they can, if they can find a a receiver, maybe a
- 7:19cornerback, this team looks really, really good.
- 7:23And obviously health is going to play a big role into things.
- 7:26But man, oh man, it's it's it's great.
- 7:29Look, we've been fortunate for what we do.
- 7:31We've had, quote, one of our regional teams go a long way
- 7:34year after year after year. And maybe, if it's not the
- 7:37Chiefs this year, maybe it's the Green Bay Packers.
- 7:40Will keep the local quote. Local interest peaked right
- 7:44through the end. Or maybe they'll collide in the
- 7:45Super Bowl. You'd love that.
- 7:47No, I wouldn't because then I've been wrong again.
- 7:54This is a big spot for the Chiefs this week.
- 7:55You think so? I do.
- 7:56I do. Do you see them falling to Owen
- 7:58to? Evidently, you don't.
- 8:00No, I I think they do. You think they do?
- 8:02Yeah, I like the Eagles this week, but the Ravens started
- 8:05Owen two last year and they were fine and they were a Andrew's
- 8:09drop away but. What if the Eagles put it to
- 8:12him? I I can't, I can't get there.
- 8:16We've seen it before. We've seen slow starts out of
- 8:18this organization. I just believe too much in
- 8:21Patrick Mahomes to be hitting the panic button even if they
- 8:23get blown off the field. 3113 and something like that.
- 8:27Now last year in the Super Bowl, they weren't able to get any
- 8:31pressure at all against Jalen Hurts week one against Herbert,
- 8:37he was just sitting back there hopping in the pocket as Herbert
- 8:40does and firing whenever he wanted to.
- 8:43If that continued was that's where my concern is.
- 8:45It's not about the offensive side.
- 8:46It's not about Mahomes. It's defensive.
- 8:48No, no concern about Kelsey. No, no.
- 8:51I mean, I thought he looked fine on Friday night.
- 8:53It is. They're going to be OK there
- 8:56because they have 15. But the, I guess, secret formula
- 9:01is what Chris Jones and that defense has been able to do
- 9:03during the last eight years. And if they've taken a step
- 9:06back, coupled with the offense not as dynamic as it once was,
- 9:09that's when the concern starts to come in.
- 9:12We'll see. But I I think they're I think
- 9:14they're destined to be owned too.
- 9:15I really do. I think the Eagles are just a
- 9:17better football team and Jalen Carter's going to be on the
- 9:19field and he's a difference maker.
- 9:21Don't spit on anybody. Don't spit on anybody.
- 9:23I'm guessing he's been well coached.
- 9:25No, he hasn't. He's been coached for a long
- 9:27time and he's a knucklehead. No, he is.
- 9:29There's no doubt about that. Big, big game, obviously.
- 9:32And is that a Fox game? Good question.
- 9:35I think I heard that. It is a Fox game.
- 9:37Speaking of that, the maps are out over at Five O 6 Sports, so
- 9:42we can see what we're getting here.
- 9:44So Fox has the double dip, obviously.
- 9:46So game one CBS single header this week.
- 9:50OK, hang on a second. Yep, hang on a second.
- 9:53The whole state of Iowa's going to get this, so everyone's
- 9:55listening across the state, regardless of what market you're
- 9:58in, you're going to be given. So here are your choices.
- 10:01Jacksonville Cincy Charger, Tennessee New England Miami
- 10:06Buffalo Jets Cleave Bolt. That's the early window for CBS.
- 10:13They also have the Rams Tennessee game, though it is
- 10:15because, remember, we're dealing in a different world than we
- 10:18once did. But the the Rams, Tennessee
- 10:20game, they've got, too. Yes, they do.
- 10:21That's Iron Eagle and JJ Watt on the call for that one.
- 10:25I don't even see that game listed.
- 10:27It's there, they're playing it. Oh, Rams, Tennessee.
- 10:29There it is. I don't know, skipped right over
- 10:31it. We get Buffalo Jets.
- 10:36We do. Nance and Robo will be there for
- 10:38that one. So the whole state, you're going
- 10:40to get Buffalo Jets. Jets hang around against that
- 10:45crappy defense. Number six and a half, six big
- 10:47number and Oliver's out and Oliver's out and Oliver's out
- 10:50and he was phenomenal, I thought, against Baltimore.
- 10:53Yeah, I think they'll hang around.
- 10:55Hang around. Fields will make some plays, so.
- 10:56So what's late? There's CBS has a so it's so
- 11:00what's the Fox game? The Fox.
- 11:02Window is. Is Giants, Cowboys.
- 11:06Well, no. Fox has one game late.
- 11:10Everybody in the country is getting Philadelphia, Kansas.
- 11:12So who has the double header? The double header is for Fox, so
- 11:16the Fox early game is what we're talking about.
- 11:18Yeah, and that's what I'm going over.
- 11:20Giants, Dallas. Yes, and you can.
- 11:22Stop right there. It's bears.
- 11:23It's bears. Detroit, it has Bears, Detroit,
- 11:25everybody will get that across the upper Midwest and everybody
- 11:28in our market. So I put a easy week, no?
- 11:30It is an easy week. I agree with you.
- 11:32Yeah, it's an easy week. Television networks didn't have
- 11:35to twist themselves to make the wrong decision this week.
- 11:37Does it say who's doing the early Tampa Bay Houston?
- 11:42I mean where are Buck and Aikman I guess is my question.
- 11:45Let's go to let's see if we can find Monday night broadcast.
- 11:48Here we go. Early window, that is ESPNN,
- 11:51ABC6 O'clock kick off with Tampa at Houston.
- 11:54Joe Buck and Troy Aikman will be there for that one.
- 11:57Your late team on ESPN for chargers or radars in Vegas, it
- 12:02will be Chris Fowler along with Dan Orlowski and Lewis Riddick.
- 12:07That's pretty good. Not bad.
- 12:08Yep, that's pretty good. I think.
- 12:09Fowler is good I think. Fowler is good, yes, very solid.
- 12:12He. Is he is and I was bitching and
- 12:14moaning when when he took over from.
- 12:16So you. Of Musburger, but Fowler very
- 12:20quickly made it believe. Look, he's had a great career.
- 12:23Didn't Chris Fowler start on ESPN with some high school show?
- 12:27He did, absolutely. Yeah, like back in the.
- 12:30Scholastic. Something something America,
- 12:32maybe That sounds about right. Yes, absolutely.
- 12:35When did? Was that a nine?
- 12:36It had to be 9. Because I was here.
- 12:38So I wouldn't have got an ESPN, man.
- 12:39No, it must have been Scholastic Sports America.
- 12:42And he did the show from Boulder.
- 12:45Didn't you grow up in Denver or Boulder went to Colorado or
- 12:47something? Anyways, well, good stuff.
- 12:50So that's your lineup for for the week and a pretty good
- 12:53lineup after that. So Tom Caker will join us on the
- 12:56other side of this. Did you struggle as far as
- 12:58coming up with your games to put in our pick contest?
- 13:01Do you like the picks? Do you like the games this week
- 13:04from a betting perspective? I got another 1520 games I'll be
- 13:06betting this weekend. It's it's not a problem about me
- 13:09finding 5, it's me paring down to five.
- 13:11That's always my issue. Your favorite 5.
- 13:13Yes, my favorite 5. What do you like better?
- 13:15This. What do you feel better at this
- 13:17week, College or NFL? I like them both.
- 13:20I like both cards I mentioned Week 2, my favorite in the NFL.
- 13:23Overreaction doesn't feel quite as immense this week.
- 13:26For whatever reason, it doesn't this.
- 13:27Chair. But I I got a ton of games and
- 13:31I'll be betting a lot this weekend and hopefully we'll be
- 13:33in the green. We'll see where it goes.
- 13:35I'm, I did not like the college slate from a betting
- 13:38perspective. I kind of like a couple of NFL
- 13:42games more than some of the others.
- 13:43We'll get to that coming up here at about oh, quarter or so
- 13:46before quarter before 2145 ish. We will make our picks.
- 13:50Do you know where we stand in the head to head midday show
- 13:57versus afternoon drive? Well, I finally helped out last
- 14:00week. I got a couple of wins, so I
- 14:01only got one. That was an improvement.
- 14:03So you had two? I had two.
- 14:05And I was lipping off and I went one and. 41 and 4.
- 14:08So between the two of us, we had three.
- 14:10Yes, we have combined now for what, 8 victories on the year
- 14:14out of 20 picks? Not going to make money.
- 14:16Do no and the and the and Shawn and Lucas had one after the
- 14:20first week. Right.
- 14:22So, but did between the two of them, did they come up with
- 14:24seven or no? I.
- 14:25Don't think so. I don't think they had a great.
- 14:26So we're still in. We're still in front.
- 14:28We're in control all. Right.
- 14:30He put three wins out of 10 picks and we're in control.
- 14:34Let's get to Mike. He's in Waterloo.
- 14:36This should be good. Hello, Mike, How are you?
- 14:38Oh, pretty good guys. You know that 11 and one record
- 14:41I predicted? Yeah, it seems so.
- 14:43You're still alive, baby. You're still alive.
- 14:46Hey, you know, I'd like to thank you and I for giving us these
- 14:50great assistant coaches. You know, we got Green and
- 14:52Crawford and basketball. We got that offensive line
- 14:56coach. Now we got Bryce Pop Pop and you
- 14:59noticed improvement from 1:00 to 3:00 on their defensive line and
- 15:03we thought that was going to be a weak spot.
- 15:05But I tell you by the end of the year, these guys are going to
- 15:07get 3 or 4 sacks the game and I think. 3 or 4, Mike, they have
- 15:12two all year. What they give the Iowa game?
- 15:16Did we get 3 or 4? Well, you got 2 on the final
- 15:19possession. Oh, that's.
- 15:21Right. Bryce Pop was one of the
- 15:22greatest. He's a phenomenal player.
- 15:25Yeah, he was. And it's just going to, he's
- 15:27going to coach these guys hard. And I think Campbell knows he's
- 15:30got a team that can go to the playoffs.
- 15:32I really do. And he's coaching them hard.
- 15:34And you know, those two wide receivers have been 500 meter
- 15:40guys and I think we're going to get about 3 or 480 yard pass
- 15:43plays this year. What do you guys think?
- 15:45I think maybe 5 or 6 the way these.
- 15:48Well, I will say to Kenny 11 to one look.
- 15:50No, Mike, you're looking great. You, you absolutely are.
- 15:53You look like you had a pretty good feel for this squad going
- 15:56into the year. You know what Who would you
- 15:59rather buy stock in next year? The White Sox or the Cubs?
- 16:03The Cubs. The Cubs.
- 16:04I tell you one thing, have you been watching those whites?
- 16:07I have not 5 rookies. You got the next Sammy.
- 16:10So while slamming salsa on the team now.
- 16:14They their arrow was pointing up, I'll give you that.
- 16:16Oh, big time, yeah. I don't disagree.
- 16:19Yep, and one more thing, when you get cap on, would you just
- 16:22get one question for the White Sox?
- 16:23Yeah, we want to keep an audience, Mike.
- 16:25All right. Well, thanks.
- 16:27Hey buddy, enjoy the game. Good to hear from you Mike in
- 16:29Waterloo. He's one of.
- 16:31One, he's one of one and we've grateful that he listens to us.
- 16:34We'll take a time out, we'll come back and we'll be joined by
- 16:37Tom Caker. Caker on the Hawks.
- 16:38What do they need expect to see coming in here tomorrow?
- 16:42Look forward to that. Miller and Condon underway on a
- 16:45football Friday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 16:47Network. Murray Condon, welcome back,
- 17:02Iowa Sports Radio Network. Let's get to Tom Cacert,
- 17:05hawkeyereport.com. He joins the program.
- 17:09Hello, Tom. Trent and Ken's 6:30 or 6:00
- 17:12tomorrow night. Big 10 Network has the game
- 17:14can't be in front of your TV. It stares down the hall from us
- 17:17on News Radio 1040. WHO?
- 17:19All right, Tom, let's perfect world this one.
- 17:23What would be the best case scenario for the Hawks?
- 17:26Convincing win, Quarterback looks good, Backup quarterback
- 17:32some gets some time. What would appease the fan base
- 17:37if there is such a thing? I don't know if that's
- 17:40achievable because I think even if they do throw the ball around
- 17:45or. Oh no, we lost him.
- 17:50Lost him very quickly, went away.
- 17:52Yep, there you are. We lost your mid mid sentence
- 17:54there. Yep.
- 17:56OK, the, the, you know, the what'll happen is like mass.
- 18:00Oh, it's you, you know, that's so I, I think will make people
- 18:04happy as if they ball around a little bit, but I don't know
- 18:08that they'll be truly happy by it.
- 18:10Need to take some shots down the field.
- 18:12I think that would certainly be something.
- 18:13See that speed out there? Take us back to Tuesday and Kirk
- 18:17was asked about the wide receivers going short of the
- 18:19sticks and that kind of thing. He seemed frustrated and felt
- 18:23like with his wide receiver group did.
- 18:25Did you take it the same way? Yeah, I thought there was some
- 18:29frustration. I thought there was some
- 18:31frustration with special teams. I think there was some of that
- 18:35too. So I think there's just some
- 18:37general frustration from her, just that things aren't going as
- 18:41smoothly as I think he'd probably hoped that they would
- 18:45at this point in the year. But you know, they, they just
- 18:50had to find a way to do some things differently and get them
- 18:55get them better on offense because it's it's a slog right
- 18:59now. It just is.
- 19:00Then if it, if they come out tomorrow and the UMass game
- 19:05looks a lot like the Albany game.
- 19:07Oh, it's just, it's going to be Brute.
- 19:09It's going to be Brute. Just work.
- 19:11I mean, it's just they've got to do something in the first half
- 19:16and they've got a, you know, go to half time at like 28, nothing
- 19:19or something. People will be like, OK, that's
- 19:21good, that's positive. But if it's like, oh, we're
- 19:25sitting at, you know, 17/7, everybody's going to be like,
- 19:30oh, here we go again, you know? Yeah, I get Phillips involved,
- 19:34maybe get him a long pass or maybe Seth Anderson.
- 19:37So Tom, and I appreciate you doing this because I know
- 19:40nothing about UMass. I can't bring myself to look at
- 19:43this team because it's just seemingly when you get by beat
- 19:46by Bryant, I mean, help me, what?
- 19:50What does UMass do? Do Do well or average, I guess.
- 19:55What do they do that might give Iowa difficulty tomorrow?
- 20:00They haven't given up any rushing touchdowns this year.
- 20:02There you go. How about that?
- 20:06They haven't, but they've given up 9 touchdown passes in two
- 20:09games to Bryant and Temple. So you better be able.
- 20:13To there's there, yeah, you have to be.
- 20:16And they're giving up two, I think it was the 297 or 279.
- 20:21I can't remember if I'm transposed anyway, close to 300
- 20:24yards a game in the air to Temple and Bryant.
- 20:28So if I will can't throw the ball against us and they're beat
- 20:32up, their backup quarterback is going to be in there.
- 20:35A guy transferred from Yale, the best wide receiver, Ty Harding
- 20:40is out. So they've really got just one
- 20:43receiver. I think 2 of their their two
- 20:47starting corners are out too. I think they've got like 7 or 8
- 20:52starters that are out. So if Iowa can't # this team, I
- 20:57mean, you look at the Sagarin rankings and in the Sagarin
- 21:01rankings, I think UMass is like 2 spots ahead of Drake.
- 21:07Not in scholarship. Drake, yeah.
- 21:10Yeah, give me Woodley's group go get it done.
- 21:12Absolutely. So a question for you mention
- 21:14the wide receivers, the tight end position, the strength is
- 21:16going to be out for the season with the Achilles injury.
- 21:19Zach Gortworth admitted that he's not a very good blocker on
- 21:21Tuesday. OK, that's eye opening.
- 21:24Thomas Meyer heard a lot about him in the recruiting.
- 21:26I mean it, I would say it's not very often the Texas A&M and
- 21:29Miami are making their way up to Clear Lake, right?
- 21:31But they were there looking at him.
- 21:33He was on the travel squad. It's a guy that is going to be
- 21:37part of the plans eventually. I mean, is it time to take the
- 21:40bubble wrap off and say let's see what we got here?
- 21:43Ivana made the kid from Carroll Kemper.
- 21:44That's another one that's been getting a little bit of buzz.
- 21:47Take us into the tight end position.
- 21:50Yeah, I would say Meyer is the one I'm intrigued with.
- 21:53Also Michael Burt. We kind of just pass over
- 21:56Michael Burt, but he was the guy, red shirt freshman.
- 21:59He was also travelling this week.
- 22:01But I think they've probably got it.
- 22:03They were. They were clearly thinking about
- 22:07playing Meyer already because he was on the travel roster and
- 22:11he's been kind of in that you can kind of tell at the first
- 22:16home game like which guys are like, hey, we're just going to
- 22:18red shirt this guy probably. And guys that they're kind of
- 22:21thinking about because Meyer was always around the huddle out
- 22:26during timeouts where like Mason Woods and Eli Johnson, the other
- 22:31two freshmen tight ends were on the sidelines, not near the hub.
- 22:36So they're clearly kind of getting that guy ready to go.
- 22:39And I think you just got to take the take the rap off of him, as
- 22:42you said, and just let him play and see what he can do because I
- 22:45think they really like him. You know, it's going to help the
- 22:49offense too. And they eventually get
- 22:51Vanderzee. I mean, Gronowski admitted that
- 22:54Vanderzee was like one of his favorite guys to throw to.
- 22:57And, you know, now he doesn't have him and, and Marmolton, the
- 23:02top running backs been out. So I mean, there's there is some
- 23:05extenuating circumstances, but they still should if, if this
- 23:11thing's not if they don't cover the 35, something's wrong I
- 23:15think. Over under 1 1/2 punts for
- 23:17Dakin. He might get to.
- 23:21You think so? I take the under.
- 23:23I don't even. Know if he will or I Yeah, they
- 23:26might be that bad though. This might be one of the worst
- 23:28teams that's ever come in to camp.
- 23:29Oh my God, that's pathetic. Let me so let's So let me ask
- 23:32you about Moulton and Vanzi. What's what's the problem?
- 23:37Any chance they play Friday at Rutgers?
- 23:40Don't know they've Anderson. We saw him last week and he was
- 23:46still in a boot. So that's one of the things
- 23:48we're going to check on Saturday is if he's still in a boot and
- 23:51if he's out of the boot, then maybe you got a chance to get
- 23:53him ready. I think one of the interesting
- 23:56things too this week is, you know, do they just with it's a
- 24:01short turn around? I mean, you're playing a
- 24:03Saturday night game and then you got to travel and you got a
- 24:06Friday night game. So you got the wind.
- 24:08It's not like you're playing at 11 AM.
- 24:10You can get off your feet and be done by 2:30 and rest up on
- 24:13Saturday. It's, you know, it's late until
- 24:15the night, so I'm going to be curious if they start shoveling
- 24:20in some guys fairly quickly. Kirk goes to the second unit
- 24:24fairly quickly on Saturday if they can get a pretty
- 24:28significant lead and just kind of cruise in to the finish line.
- 24:32Iowa This is not very Iowa defense like they are sitting
- 24:36with just two tax sacks on the season, 4 consecutive games
- 24:40without an interception. First time since 2014 that has
- 24:43been the case getting the. Count this weekend if they get.
- 24:46One, it should because it's been a long time, but what's what's
- 24:50happening with the deep? I mean, they look buttoned up,
- 24:52they look solid and you know, holding Iowa State to those
- 24:54early field goals. There were a lot of good things.
- 24:56But those are really major parts of the Phil Parker defense,
- 25:00getting the quarterback and getting some picks.
- 25:02What's going on there? And yes, hopefully you get it
- 25:04done this weekend. But any concern with you when
- 25:07you hear those two numbers? Yeah, it is concerning that they
- 25:11have not gotten but, but it was last year, the year before they
- 25:16were just, they were sitting like 3 games in and had like one
- 25:19or two sacks or something and and they end up with 30.
- 25:22So it's like they always seem to find a way to get there, but
- 25:26they have not gotten it yet. And I think this thing that's
- 25:28concerning too is that they just have not created turnovers yet.
- 25:33And they've got to in order for Iowa to be successful, they've
- 25:38got to be able to create some turnover and get some
- 25:40opportunities. And, and they haven't done a
- 25:43whole lot on special teams. In fact, you know, Kirk was
- 25:45pretty exasperated about the special teams play against Iowa
- 25:49State. And, you know, it cost them.
- 25:52It really did. I mean, the, the unsportsmanlike
- 25:54conduct thing on Ouija and the, the, the, the, IT went by him
- 26:00and, and, you know, and then he skated back and got it and lost
- 26:04more yardage. I mean stuff like that that that
- 26:07really makes it hard It they have to be good in those off 3
- 26:11phases in order to win football games against seems like Iowa
- 26:13State. And didn't do it on Saturday.
- 26:16Tom will let you go on this. Iowa basketball has released
- 26:18their non conference schedule. I know when I talked to McCullum
- 26:21a couple weeks back, he said they were still struggling to
- 26:24find that final game or maybe some frustration.
- 26:26Do you know that they I can't tell?
- 26:28I don't remember, it was one of the ones towards the end.
- 26:30I think it was one of the December games, but kind of
- 26:32difficult at that point. They put it together.
- 26:34Give us a take away. Two on the men's hoop schedule.
- 26:38Yeah, I know he they were struggling to find that one more
- 26:42game and finally got it. So that's good that they've got
- 26:46that done. I like it.
- 26:48You know, they, they've got the the MTE thing and they're going
- 26:51to play old Miss and maybe they'll play, you know, Utah,
- 26:55you know, Grand Canyon still, I think a pretty solid program and
- 27:00Xavier's a good, solid program and Richard Pitino there.
- 27:03So, you know, he's going to put a good team out there on the on
- 27:06the floor and and Iowa State on the road.
- 27:09I mean, there's, there's some meat to it, at least some names
- 27:12that we we recognize. At least it's not directional
- 27:16school, state schools, South Carolina upstate not on the
- 27:20schedule this year. So.
- 27:22Good stuff. Tom Kegard Hot.
- 27:23Guy here's a here's a fun here's a fun note for you guys.
- 27:26Iowa hasn't. Iowa quarterback hasn't thrown
- 27:28for over 200 yards in the game since Illinois State last year.
- 27:31Good God. Have we watched them all?
- 27:35Maybe will has to happen this? Week, if we can get that this
- 27:38weekend. What a high ball.
- 27:40This weekend. When do you leave for Rutgers,
- 27:42Tom? Thursday.
- 27:44Thursday. Good stuff.
- 27:45Yeah, so I'll be out there Friday, so.
- 27:46Awesome. We'll be good.
- 27:47Good stuff. Talk to you then.
- 27:48Thank you, Tom Caker. OK.
- 27:50Yep. Thanks guys.
- 27:50Tom Caker, hawkeyereport.com All right, Mike Palm is next off to
- 27:54Las Vegas, by the way, the Chicago White Sox.
- 27:56Mike in Waterloof, you're still listening.
- 27:58Best record in baseball in September.
- 28:00Wow. How about those White Sox errors
- 28:02pointing up? I agree.
- 28:03Mike Palm is next. Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 28:05Sports Radio Network. I'm Hillary convin welcome back
- 28:19Iowa sports radio network with you until 2O clock let's head to
- 28:22Las Vegas. Mike Palm is the vice president
- 28:25of operations at circus sports and Iowa native born raised in
- 28:29Dubuque and he joins us Mike Trenton Ken good to speak with
- 28:32you. Where I want to start with you
- 28:34is got an e-mail yesterday as a customer of Circus Sports Iowa.
- 28:40Sounds as though the the app will be changing.
- 28:44It's been rumoured for some time, but I we have to by
- 28:47September 30th it will be live. And if you are a a circuit
- 28:51customer in Iowa, have to go to the App Store, download the new
- 28:54app and away we go. Changes are coming.
- 28:57Mike Palm. Yeah, that's good.
- 28:59It's a good thing. This is the the tech we've been
- 29:02developing the last few years, which will have many of the
- 29:07features that the other larger companies have such as same game
- 29:12parlays and cash out options and much more end game offerings.
- 29:18So we're excited to roll it out. I was the first state, will do
- 29:22it in Colorado at the end of October and roll it out in
- 29:25Missouri on December 1st. That'll be excellent.
- 29:28A lot of different bells and whistles that are going to be a
- 29:31part of it. How different does it make it
- 29:33for your guys's operation behind the scenes for, you know, the
- 29:36people that are working those live lines that you guys have
- 29:39had now for a number of years, but kind of the other pieces,
- 29:41they're more difficult. Is it going to take more
- 29:44manpower? How different is you compared to
- 29:46the behemoths that are out there and what they obviously have
- 29:49kind of back behind the book? No, it's, it's more difficult
- 29:52for us now because we're doing so much stuff manually and and
- 29:56when we move a number, we have to move it manually in each
- 30:00state. And so this automates a lot of
- 30:04it. Although we won't have every
- 30:06state on the new tech until Nevada is sometimes second
- 30:09quarter next year, then it will really be smooth.
- 30:13So for now, you're going to have some of the continuous end game
- 30:19that's, you know, generated through algorithms, but you'll
- 30:23also have us handbooking some of the games as well.
- 30:26So you might see two different in game lines with different
- 30:30limits obviously when you're betting live sports.
- 30:33Before we get into the games, anxious to see how the Packers
- 30:37were for you guys. Changes also coming to to
- 30:40Fremont Street and Nevada's oldest hotel.
- 30:43That's the Golden Gate, which is right out the front doors of
- 30:46your Fremont Street entrance across the street.
- 30:49Maybe 20 hearts to the not sure the direction to the to the
- 30:52right when you would leave the building is the Golden Gate, the
- 30:55oldest property in Nevada and what what a promotion you guys
- 31:00are going to launch Mike with that, with that free hour from
- 31:03six until 7. Why don't you tell us more about
- 31:07that, because that should peak some people's interest.
- 31:10Yeah. So we took out the table games,
- 31:13looked at the reality is the rising cost of Labor with the
- 31:16minimum wage going up 75% every year.
- 31:19Nevada is not one of those states where you calculate the
- 31:21tips into the minimum wage. So it goes up whether 80% of
- 31:25your income is tips or not. And so we just moved that labor,
- 31:29that table games labor to Circa and the D so nobody lost their
- 31:31job but used it where you get a little more bang for the man
- 31:35hour buck. So in place of the table games
- 31:39will be electronic table games. We're also looking at expanding
- 31:42the high limit slot area over there and be making a high limit
- 31:46lounge where table games was. But every night from 6:00 to
- 31:497:00 PM starting and next Friday the 19th, every single night we
- 31:57will have an open bar from 6:00 to 7:00 PM.
- 32:00And yeah, you will be able to go to the Players Club and you'll
- 32:09be able to go to Players Club and pick up an envelope.
- 32:11And in that envelope will be from anywhere from 5 to $1000 in
- 32:15pre play. Every night, drink free six to
- 32:18seven. Yeah, that's right.
- 32:21I can get my money's worth on that I.
- 32:23Think a lot of people will. I think a lot of people will
- 32:25start to start the night there. Mike, how about that?
- 32:29We hope so, and that's what the name of the promotion is.
- 32:31The night starts here, so we're hoping to get a lot of people to
- 32:35come down. Sure.
- 32:36Will there be some people just trying to beat us for free
- 32:38drinks and free play? Yeah, but you could be able to
- 32:40weed them out pretty quick. Let's get into the games this
- 32:43weekend Mike, and talk some football with you.
- 32:45Love the promotion, love the idea and I always make a stop.
- 32:47For saying about the new app. Yes, no doubt, and we will be
- 32:51talking about that here in the next coming weeks.
- 32:54Let's get into the local front. Iowa State, tricky spot.
- 32:58They make their way down to Jonesboro to take on Arkansas
- 33:01State and then Iowa, a huge favorite at home against UMass.
- 33:05What are you seeing in the betting market for the Hawkeyes
- 33:07and Cyclones? Well, I was very interesting
- 33:10because it's 35 and 44. So I mean, they're 36, you know,
- 33:1742, you can't get there, right? I mean 38, 38 to 6, he doesn't
- 33:25get there. And I mean, so the implied total
- 33:27for you Mass is they're not going to get more than a field
- 33:29goal, obviously. So I mean 2 field goals would go
- 33:32over there. Implied total.
- 33:34So there's not a lot of action on that game.
- 33:35There's been some on Iowa State that number fluctuating a little
- 33:39bit between 21 1/2 and 20 1/2. And right now we're at 21.
- 33:43So some action there. It's kind of, you know,
- 33:46obviously a let down spot to go to Arkansas State after the big
- 33:49win in the end in the Seihawk game.
- 33:52Want to go to switch to the NFL because you guys had a couple of
- 33:55really major movement odds wise and in particular the first one
- 33:59I saw was the Colts in Denver. There were still some 2 1/2's
- 34:02out there. I think you guys were at one at
- 34:05the time, but you guys were the first to move the Broncos and
- 34:08the Colts to a pick em game. It's back up to now.
- 34:11Denver favored but by one, but was that a significant bet that
- 34:15caused that movement, Mike? A couple limit bets that we took
- 34:20on the game on the Colts. I suspected I suspected Denver
- 34:25will be 1 or 1 1/2 by the time they kick off.
- 34:29Look, my big play last week was the Colts, but it was really
- 34:32more about I thought Miami was a train wreck and I thought he'd
- 34:36lost the team down there. The, the, the, the mad scientist
- 34:39Daniel, which I think it was right.
- 34:42I mean, Daniel Jones was looked OK, but they didn't do anything
- 34:45particularly great. Miami was just totally inept.
- 34:49And then you look at the other side of the coin.
- 34:50I really like the this weekend because you know, people said
- 34:54all Tennessee was right there with Denver, that the turnover
- 34:57margin was 4 to 1. And I don't know if Ball Nicks
- 34:59could have played any words. I don't know if Peyton could
- 35:02have coached the game any worse and they still beat him by 8 and
- 35:05I never really felt they were a threat even though they led in
- 35:07the second-half. I think Tennessee is really
- 35:10awful and I think the Rams front 4 obviously will pressure Cam
- 35:13Ward and he doesn't have anybody that can catch the ball.
- 35:15No, that's that's true. Interesting point.
- 35:17The other game that's moved to a pick and this will be I have to
- 35:20assume, despite the the prime time games, I mean eagles in the
- 35:24and the chiefs doesn't get much bigger than that.
- 35:26You guys are now at A at a Pick em on that one, Mike.
- 35:30Yeah, that's what everybody told me.
- 35:31This game would go to a that, you know, way.
- 35:33Can the market tolerate the Chiefs being the dog?
- 35:36I think they should be the dog. Seven of the last 10 times the
- 35:41Super Bowl participants have met the team that won the Super
- 35:44Bowl, won the game and covered over the team that lost the
- 35:47Super Bowl. I think Philly has a rest edge.
- 35:50They edge and rest. They didn't have all the travel,
- 35:52although the travel isn't as impactful early in the year is
- 35:54late. I don't know where the speed is
- 35:57for the Chiefs to try to take the top off the defense.
- 36:00Philadelphia dominated them in the Super Bowl.
- 36:02I don't know why they're better. I get it.
- 36:04Mahomes as a dog almost never loses.
- 36:06But I like Philadelphia here. Circus Survivor, almost
- 36:11everybody survived in week #1 we're waiting for that carnage,
- 36:15that big week that knocks a lot of people out there is a huge
- 36:18favorite on the board with Baltimore playing host to
- 36:20Cleveland. A lot of people are going to be
- 36:23on Arizona, I'm sure this week. Now, you can't tell us
- 36:25selections at this point because they're not in.
- 36:27But the anticipation, a lot of Ravens or because they have a
- 36:30prime time game later in the year, you think people are going
- 36:33to be saving them. I think people who didn't use
- 36:35Arizona will use Arizona, and the people who used Arizona will
- 36:39use the Ravens. I mean, I'm not speaking for
- 36:41everyone, but I'm speaking for the majority.
- 36:44That would be my theory on this game.
- 36:45You would try to say Baltimore. Look, Cleveland's been lucky
- 36:48with them, too. People don't like to use
- 36:50division games. I know a lot of people probably
- 36:53didn't watch Carolina because of that long lightning delay, but
- 36:56that game was awful. They were awful.
- 36:59Not that Arizona lit up the sky in New Orleans, but I think you
- 37:04would feel very comfortable to be shocked if Kyler Murray in
- 37:06Arizona lost this game at home. So I think that'll be the
- 37:10majority pick. You might see some Rams at
- 37:13Tennessee, possibly that that that could be one of the
- 37:16selections. And I think you might see some
- 37:18Cowboys. Yep.
- 37:19If you're looking at them and say we're not going to use them
- 37:21on Thanksgiving, when do you get a better spot than having the
- 37:24Giants at home? Yeah, Fairpoint, we're going to
- 37:26be both. Both our our picks are Ravens,
- 37:29Mike, we've never done this before, gone all in with both of
- 37:32our picks. But that's what we're doing,
- 37:34right or wrong. And I know they play
- 37:35Thanksgiving at night hosting Cincinnati, but I it's a
- 37:39divisional game as well. We're going both with Baltimore.
- 37:42Do you think that that will be the play?
- 37:45I mean, overwhelmingly or no, You think the cards will be
- 37:48close? I I think they'll be close.
- 37:50Do you the Cardinals and the Ravens?
- 37:52I do. Couple more on college games.
- 37:55Want to see what you see You're alma mater.
- 37:57Notre Dame. Huge spot for them.
- 37:59Can't afford to go O and two. The rest of the schedule is
- 38:01pretty easy. Notre Dame playing host to Texas
- 38:04A&M. Yeah, I, I didn't play the game,
- 38:09but I guess if I could get 7, I probably would take 7.
- 38:12And this spot, look at Texas A&M had gotten any kind of
- 38:15quarterback play last year in College Station, they'd have
- 38:17beaten Notre Dame. Notre Dame just sort of wore
- 38:19them down. They broke a few big runs late.
- 38:21I thought A&M was probably the better team for most of that
- 38:23game. Notre Dame has the week off to
- 38:26prepare here, but I think this is a game that stays inside of 1
- 38:30score. I'm not sure I'm still the
- 38:32verdicts out for me. I thought Miami totally
- 38:34dominated Notre Dame in the opener.
- 38:36I don't think the game was as close as the score indicated so
- 38:39and I'm really looking forward to Miami against South.
- 38:41Florida lot of points, 17 1/2. We'll see where that one ends
- 38:46up. What about?
- 38:46What about? The game in the middle of the
- 38:49day, Georgia, Tennessee. Mike, sounds like Georgia's got
- 38:52some significant injury problems in their secondary.
- 38:55What did you have any opinion on that game?
- 38:58No, none. I don't know anything.
- 38:59I never watched either team play Georgia spore.
- 39:03I think it's a more of a reputation.
- 39:06I mean, I'm a Leyva leaves Tennessee and UCLA is off.
- 39:09I mean, we just you and LV just beat them.
- 39:11I mean, the UCLA fans were very dejected here at that loss.
- 39:16But I stay completely away from that game.
- 39:18And that's supposedly like the feature game of the day, right?
- 39:20But there are other games that I think are a lot more
- 39:22interesting. I think Clemson, Georgia Tech is
- 39:25a really interesting game. I think Vandy, South Carolina,
- 39:27Arkansas, old mess, all of these games I would rate above that
- 39:30Tennessee, Georgia game. The you mentioned that Clemson,
- 39:34Georgia Tech, there's been a lot of steam coming in here on
- 39:36Georgia Tech. I saw the in the market
- 39:39somewhere earlier today moved down to 2 1/2.
- 39:41Looks like you guys currently are sitting right at three, that
- 39:45key number of three. How important is that in college
- 39:47football compared to the NFL? That's just because pickers
- 39:52aren't as effective in college, right?
- 39:54Some of them are. The kid from Iowa State is
- 39:57unbelievable. He might be the best that's been
- 40:01in the state of Iowa. I know that's a lot to say, but
- 40:04I'm hard pressed to think of somebody who's been better, so
- 40:09I. It just isn't as much.
- 40:13I think it's much more important in Pro Football when you expect
- 40:16to make, you know, 95% of your kicks inside of 40 and and
- 40:21probably 50% of them outside of 50.
- 40:24So it is and it isn't, right? It is and it isn't.
