- 0:24Boring Company, and Neuralink. I'm your host, Will Walden, and
- 0:29on today's episode we're going to talk about Spacex's Starship
- 0:34IFT 4 flight that will be happening sometime in the next
- 0:38month. Ish, according to Elon Musk and
- 0:42SpaceX COO Gwen Shotwell, now IFT 3.
- 0:47Let's go back a little bit to IFT 3.
- 0:49This happened about a month ago. Their Starship vehicle, which
- 0:54launched from Starbase, Texas as a very successful launch by the
- 0:58way, very successful flight that happened about a month ago and
- 1:05it did everything almost that they wanted it to.
- 1:09There were a few things that it didn't accomplish, which was a
- 1:12soft landing in the Gulf of Mexico and also a soft landing
- 1:16in the Indian Ocean for the ship.
- 1:18The booster was in the Gulf of Mexico, the ship was in the
- 1:20Indian Ocean. Other than that though,
- 1:22everything was great and the launch was perfect.
- 1:27So what does this mean for the next launch of Starship though?
- 1:31We have to think about this, What's going to happen for IFT
- 1:344? They're going to be doing the
- 1:37same thing. Let's let's go back to IFT 3
- 1:40again. There was there were a few
- 1:41things that they wanted to do. One of them was the payload door
- 1:46opening and shutting and the payload.
- 1:48Right now the payload door is just for Starlink satellites, so
- 1:52they wanted to get that done. I FT3 they did.
- 1:55They opened the door and then they shut the door.
- 1:58The door as it shut little bit, get little bit slow, little bit
- 2:06slow, but it was successful. They're going to clean that up.
- 2:11They may do another Starlink door mission in the future.
- 2:15Not sure if it's going to be for this one or the next one or the
- 2:17next one. IF T6, maybe, but for right now,
- 2:21IFT 4, there's one thing that Elon Musk was talking about
- 2:26Elon's big hope for IFT 4. And if I'm going to get to that
- 2:32in a second because we have to go through what's happening for
- 2:35IFT 4 before we get to the big thing.
- 2:39So Elon wants IFT 4 to have a successful launch.
- 2:42Of course they want the booster. They had to blow up the booster
- 2:46in the ship of the 1st IFT 3, by the way.
- 2:49So the booster flies to the Gulf of Mexico.
- 2:53Stage separation will happen for IFT 4 and what happened with IFT
- 2:573 is that when the stage separated, the booster came back
- 3:00down towards the Gulf of Mexico and they had to blow it up
- 3:04because there were some systems that weren't working properly.
- 3:08So they had to do a a termination of the booster,
- 3:12which is totally fine. SpaceX does a thing called rapid
- 3:15iteration, so they learn from their mistakes.
- 3:19IFT one there was mistakes with a launchpad.
- 3:21It basically obliterated the launchpad under the launchpad
- 3:26for IFT 1 IFT 2 they installed a water deluge system which is
- 3:33fantastic. It cools down where the flames,
- 3:37where a normal flame trench would be.
- 3:39For a ship like this. It but it shoots thousands of
- 3:44gallons of water into a concentrated area right under
- 3:47the ship. And it absorbs the shock, it
- 3:50absorbs the sound and it works totally perfect.
- 3:54So IFT 2 fixed that problem. IFT 3, same thing and the water
- 3:59dilute system works great. IFT 2 the ship and the booster
- 4:03didn't detach for IFT one or IFT.
- 4:08Yeah, for IFT 1 and so IFT 3 hot staging works perfectly and not
- 4:13for IFT 4. They're going to refine those
- 4:15systems so hot staging is going to be refined.
- 4:19Things will work better this time.
- 4:21The plumbing within the Starship and the booster will be refined.
- 4:26So these things work a little bit better every single time.
- 4:30The electronics, maybe there's a software update, there's
- 4:32hardware updates. It's just like an iPhone.
- 4:35Every version of an iPhone from iPhone 1 to where we are now,
- 4:40it's iterative design. Things that didn't work in IF or
- 4:44in the IFT One work in IFT 4. Things that didn't work in the
- 4:48first iPhone or things that were pin points for people work
- 4:52totally fine in the iPhone 4. So it's very similar, yeah.
- 4:56So. Now for FT four stage
- 4:59separation. Like I was saying, they're going
- 5:01to do a boost back burn with the booster.
- 5:03Do the flip maneuver and let's talk about his plan, Elon Musk's
- 5:08plan. SpaceX posted a tweet the other
- 5:11day of the static fire of a single Raptor engine for the
- 5:15Starship test for test flight IFT 4 and it was successful.
- 5:20Full duration. Elon Musk tweeted after that
- 5:23getting ready for flight 4 of Starship exclamation point.
- 5:26Goal of this mission is for Starship to get through Max re
- 5:29entry heating with all systems functional.
- 5:34We saw during the static fire the single Raptor static fire of
- 5:39this ship that some of the heat tiles fell off.
- 5:44I don't know how many yet because there's 1000 of those
- 5:47things on there, so we don't know how many fell off, how many
- 5:50are remaining. They have to replace some and we
- 5:54saw some of these fall off during the last flight.
- 5:58IFT 3 and Elon wants Max reentry heating for this one.
- 6:05If some of these tiles fall off during launch, they're not going
- 6:11to be there for reentry, so any heat that they would have
- 6:14absorbed and protected the ship that's out the window that
- 6:19doesn't work doesn't work anymore.
- 6:21It's got to heat up the stainless steel that the
- 6:24Starship is composed of, So stainless steel, hot, very hot,
- 6:30thousands of degrees hot, and then baking the inside of this
- 6:36thing from the reentry heat. Luckily it's a few minutes of
- 6:40reentry, so it's not going to take 20-30 minutes to do this.
- 6:48But there's the possibility that it could get so hot that it
- 6:52could burn the systems inside, could stop some of the systems
- 6:54inside. That's the only thing I'm
- 6:55worried about. What if it destroys some
- 6:59electronics or ruins something along the way?
- 7:04And I'm not being pessimistic here, It's just the way that
- 7:06engineering works. It's physics.
- 7:09If heat in contact or something, it's going to burn it or it's
- 7:13going to melt it. And the the avionics, possibly
- 7:16the electronics. Like I was saying, if it burns
- 7:18through a wire harness with 15 or 20 wires on it, some of those
- 7:24wires could be communication wires and some of those could be
- 7:28something for avionics and then it goes spinning out of control.
- 7:32Things can happen. We don't know, we don't know
- 7:34what could happen within that system, what are the pipes for
- 7:38fuel. Anything could happen and we
- 7:40could get a rapid UN scheduled disassembly or Rudd if you will,
- 7:46mid flight at the very end of the flight if some of these heat
- 7:48tiles fell off and the heat gets into the ship itself.
- 7:53So stainless steel steel gets really hot really fast.
- 7:57I I don't know if you have a stainless steel pan that you've
- 8:00ever used, but they conduct heat very well.
- 8:03I know SpaceX is using a very a very proprietary stainless steel
- 8:09for this, so they may be able to ablate some of that heat by.
- 8:14Itself but. As of right now, we see that the
- 8:17heat tiles falling off is a possibility, but that heat could
- 8:22actually stop this light, and they're going to have to find a
- 8:26way to attach these heat tiles in a more proficient way and
- 8:30efficient way in the future. So that's all I'm really worried
- 8:34about. But Elon's tweet goal of this
- 8:36mission is for Starship to get through Max re entry heating
- 8:39with all systems functioning. That's what he's really worried
- 8:42about. I don't think there's going to
- 8:44be any other tests that they're really, really worried about in
- 8:47this. They do have a payload door on
- 8:49this. It looks like maybe they're
- 8:52going to do a fuel transfer that they were supposed to do an IFT
- 8:543. We're going to do that again.
- 8:56We're going to see in the coming weeks they're going to start
- 8:58tweeting some stuff. Elon and SpaceX are going to see
- 9:00tweeting some stuff in the coming weeks about this mission.
