- 0:16welcome back to another episode of relish today we are going to lord willing
- 0:22college up on the um what's in a name series i guess is what it's going to be now um,
- 0:29anyways we promised last week last week we talked a little bit about,
- 0:33the name of god that he gave us and all the different ones and what they mean
- 0:37and we we skipped over a few for sure um,
- 0:41but but this week today we're gonna go into i assume the gospel of john and talk about jesus,
- 0:50as god what is,
- 0:54What does Jesus say? That he is.
- 0:58Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, I'm thinking of John 14. Is that where you're thinking?
- 1:03I was thinking John 8, but go ahead. Oh, okay. We can do John 8.
- 1:08You like to do that? He's 58.
- 1:17Yep.
- 1:21I tell you the truth, before Abram was born, I am.
- 1:26And at this they picked up stones and were stoning him, getting ready to stone
- 1:29him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.
- 1:34So is it wrong for Jesus to call himself the I am?
- 1:37Heavens, no. Well, to them it was. Well, to them it was.
- 1:44And it would be the thing that they would actually take him to the cross for.
- 1:47I mean, it was basically the only count that they could actually have any grounds
- 1:53in their law to take him to the cross.
- 1:57Claiming he was God or making himself equal with God. It wasn't that he was
- 2:02saying that he was the Savior, right?
- 2:03They were expecting a Savior. They were expecting a Savior. But they weren't
- 2:06expecting God to be the Savior. Right.
- 2:11So this guy coming along saying, I am using that language, they're like,
- 2:15oh, that can't be tolerated. That can't be.
- 2:18Right. Well, and they didn't much like what he was saying either. That's true.
- 2:22You go to Matthew 23 and you realize Jesus was very outspoken about what he
- 2:28thought about the Pharisees and Sadducees. And yeah, he wasn't getting any noogie points from them.
- 2:34No. At that point, because, yeah, that was not, he was not kind to them.
- 2:41I think there's seven, seven woes. Oh, yeah. That he delivers to the Pharisees and Sadducees.
- 2:48Well, and that's the big, you know, tension of Christianity.
- 2:50This God that loves us wants to be with us.
- 2:54It is infinitely beyond anything we can understand. Actually,
- 2:57wants a relationship with us so much that he came. Personally.
- 3:02Yeah. Wow. Didn't send.
- 3:06Somebody that represents him. Right. He came personally. That's right.
- 3:10And that's what we're trying to say here is that Jesus gives all these I am statements.
- 3:16And like all these I am statements, I have a list of them. I won't show them
- 3:19to you. You will. I'm sure you know them all right.
- 3:23In all of these I am statements, he's claiming to be God, right? Yep.
- 3:28Different attributes of God, different showing the character of God through them, right? Oh, yeah.
- 3:34And several of these in John, he specifically says, I am doing what I see my father doing. Yeah.
- 3:42And so he's basically saying, watch me, I'm doing what God's doing already here.
- 3:49As if he really is the personal in-time manifestation of Almighty.
- 3:56And so they're responding to this. You can't be doing that. Yeah.
- 4:01Can't be saying that. No. Even though he was. Yeah.
- 4:04And even asking him, say it plainly, are you actually claiming to be God?
- 4:09And it's like they hadn't been listening the whole time. Right.
- 4:11They hadn't been listening the whole time. Yeah. They just wanted to hear him say it again, maybe.
- 4:16John's gospel gave us several I'm the bread of life Oh yeah,
- 4:22John 6 I'm the light of the world I am the door.
- 4:30I am the good shepherd I am the resurrection and the life I am the way the true
- 4:36and the life Oh yeah, and I am the true vine,
- 4:40are some that I have down 15 you got all these different I am statements yes
- 4:46what's the significance of that I am part do you know well I still think it
- 4:48goes back to the to the Old Testament yeah,
- 4:51to God saying I am that I am and and that.
- 4:58I mean, you can't get into any, uh, fuller foundation, I guess when you boil
- 5:04down any issue to its base, then you, this is the base we have. He is.
- 5:12Yeah. He is. Uh, so. Let me ask a question. Why, why didn't,
- 5:16instead of when he says before Abraham was, I am, why didn't he just say,
- 5:21you know, like I existed before Abraham?
- 5:24I mean, that's, that's the big deal, right? To them it is. Yeah.
- 5:28Because they trace everything back to Abraham. Yeah.
- 5:32I don't know why. I mean, they could go all the way back to Adam,
- 5:36but they go to Abraham because Abraham was the genetic form of their ethnic line.
- 5:44And I think part of that is a lot of this Jewish stuff was ethnic. Yeah.
- 5:50And so they hang it on that, I can prove my DNA, you know, I can prove that
- 5:55he was my father. I can...
- 5:58And yeah, that's why if somebody married outside, well, that messes up the gene pool.
- 6:08And if you go to the Old Testament, in fact, we almost got turned off when we
- 6:12got to Chronicles, the son of, the son of, the son of, the son of.
- 6:17And you go through the Chronicles, do I need to know this?
- 6:21But part of it is because they could trace themselves all the way back.
- 6:25And Paul would come out and say, well, don't mess around with the genealogies anymore.
- 6:31That's not our relationship. And so, don't mess with the endless genealogies.
- 6:38And that points to something else. And so, what is this relationship we have
- 6:42with this Christ? The I am.
- 6:46And he would say, come unto me, all you who are weary and laden,
- 6:52and I will give you rest. It's a relationship. It's personal.
- 6:56It's not out there. I mean, so many, so it seems like the Pharisees,
- 7:01Sadducees would treat God as being off there. And we just sort of have to qualify.
- 7:10We have to sort of gain his presence. We got to gain his favor.
- 7:14We've got to gain this God's favor.
- 7:15And Jesus comes from another attribute and say, come know me.
- 7:22In fact, he says of all these people in Matthew chapter seven,
- 7:26I, I, They do all these things in my name, but I never knew them.
- 7:32And that's an intimacy that Jesus wants. Yeah. That God wants.
- 7:37And that bridges to this next point, like seamlessly, is that there's more than knowing God's name.
- 7:45God's name is not just information. Correct. Right?
- 7:49In fact, I would say you could know this whole book and not know...
- 7:56It's true author. You could have all the information and not know the importance of the creator. Yeah.
- 8:04I mean, yeah. Isn't there a guy who worked with Michael Heiser or something
- 8:06like that who was an atheist? And he'll know more about the Bible than I ever, ever will.
- 8:11Well, and I was thinking, F.F. Bruce was an excellent textual critic of the
- 8:18New Testament, especially, but yet a tremendous man of faith.
- 8:23But the guy who took over from him was an atheist.
- 8:27And really didn't care about the faith and didn't really care about anything
- 8:32except the textual criticism.
- 8:34And he heightened the criticism to such a point that it really.
- 8:42Went underneath the text. It sort of took the foundation down.
- 8:47I'm trying to think what happens when you have a dam and it all of a sudden
- 8:51gets the water going under it instead of through it, over it.
- 8:55You look like you're digging underneath a tree trying to find the root and then
- 8:59you're finding some other trees. It really eroded the foundation.
- 9:03Hammer looking for a nail. Yeah.
- 9:07So it eroded the textual criticism. In fact, the whole study of textual criticism is being criticized.
- 9:15Yeah. Because the guy who came after, successor of F.F. Bruce,
- 9:20pretty well took it down as a study of the New Testament. And,
- 9:24uh, yeah, it's sad, really sad. Yeah.
- 9:27And we, we have to be wary of that because knowing someone's name,
- 9:31knowing God's name is not simply the intellectual information because in the
- 9:35Bible, when, even when God talks about knowing our names and I know you're getting
- 9:38there, not stealing your thunder.
- 9:42You're knowing a person that's not knowing your name.
- 9:46If someone says, I know Alex, that's different than saying, I know Alex's name.
- 9:50Like there's people that, you know, say if they know my name,
- 9:52it feels like they know me. Right.
- 9:55Yeah. And when we, we need to be careful about knowing God's name and actually
- 9:58knowing God. Right. Yes.
- 10:00And I've been caught in situations where somebody says they know me and I haven't got a clue who they are.
- 10:06And I don't know how many times I end up. And it's not just because I'm forgetful. I could be part of it.
- 10:11But it's because they know where I'm at and where I belong, but I really don't
- 10:16have a relationship with them.
- 10:19And that really ends up some interesting times. So I personally work against that and say, well.
- 10:31I have a relationship. If I have a relationship, yes, they're a friend of mine.
- 10:35If I don't have a relationship, well, I'm acquainted with him.
- 10:38If at least I've seen them face to face.
- 10:41I know his work. If I haven't seen him face to face, but I know,
- 10:46you know, what he's written or listen to him on the TV or radio,
- 10:51I'm acquainted with his work.
- 10:52Okay. Rather than, well, I know who that is. Okay. I don't know who that is,
- 10:57but I am acquainted with his work. Mm-hmm.
- 11:01Because. How do we then not be that way with God? Huh.
- 11:09Because that would be real easy.
- 11:14I know God. Because people don't know you if they don't have a relationship with you, right? Right.
- 11:20And so then, how do we have a relationship with God?
- 11:25And I think we need to gain the understanding of who he is calling us to.
- 11:33He's calling us to that relationship that is more than just,
- 11:37oh, hi, how are you doing?
- 11:40It's a, are you going to be my people?
- 11:45Are you going to reflect my values?
- 11:51And even then, I'm not sure,
- 11:55we reflect him well. Sure. So-
- 12:02This possibility of being made new and fresh.
- 12:06We hear it, Jesus. Jesus talks about the transformation and moves Simon to be a Peter.
- 12:17And he talks about John's baptism for the remission of sins.
- 12:23And he talks about us being baptized in the Holy Spirit. What's that gonna do?
- 12:30It's going to change us, isn't it? It's going to change us from who we are to who God wants us to be.
- 12:35And we have to, in one way or another, allow ourselves to be molded by the Almighty.
- 12:43And this,
- 12:46Ephesians 4, verse 24, 25 talks about us taking off the old self and putting on the new self. Yeah.
- 12:54And 2 Corinthians 5, 17 through 19 talks about us.
- 12:59Doing much the same thing, in order to be his ambassadors.
- 13:04What's interesting is then Paul would take that same concept and say,
- 13:08no, you're not only ambassador, you're his sons. Uh...
- 13:16He would take us from, for what the law is powerless to do in that it was weakened by sinful nature.
- 13:24In other words, the Jews thought if they kept the law well enough, they would be okay.
- 13:33And that's not the, God did by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful
- 13:37man to be a sinful sin offering.
- 13:40And so he condemns sin in sinful man in order that righteous requirements of
- 13:45the law might be fulfilled and met in us, who do not live according to the sinful
- 13:50nature, but live according to the Spirit.
- 13:55And so he calls us into this new nature of the Holy Spirit to the point that
- 14:01we get to verse 12 of chapter 8.
- 14:04It says, therefore, brothers, we have an obligation, not to the sinful nature to live according to it.
- 14:11For if we live according to the sinful nature, we'll die.
- 14:14But if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body in which you
- 14:20live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
- 14:26And so it's a spirit.
- 14:29It is a new spirit. It's a new life.
- 14:34It's led by this Holy Spirit rather than our spirit who sort of wants to do its own thing. Yeah.
- 14:43Can I just say that the answer in a short way is reconciliation through Jesus?
- 14:51Yes, reconciliation through Jesus. That's what I'm talking about.
- 14:54The thing is, is he's unpacking what that means. And you go through the book
- 15:00of Romans and you're going to find out what that actually looks like.
- 15:03Because it's easy to say.
- 15:05And you're given that very big definition, very accurate definition.
- 15:10I hope you know I'm not saying like. Preachurizing it. Yes. Preachurizing it.
- 15:14Every little bit here is a full sermon for Don, and that's what he gets paid
- 15:16the big bucks to do is turn these little concepts into 15 minutes and 20 minutes.
- 15:22But like, they're all worthy of that, right?
- 15:24And reconciling to such a point that we get to the point we can cry,
- 15:28Abba, Father, because he is our father.
- 15:32He's not only out there, I am.
- 15:35No, he's our father. Abba, Father, my heartfelt father. He's the one that gives me life.
- 15:42And the Spirit testifies with our spirit that we're God's children.
- 15:45That's right. Go read Romans 8. Children, then heirs, heirs of God,
- 15:49co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share it in his sufferings,
- 15:52in order that we may also share in his glory.
- 15:55That's beautiful. That's right. Then I would say, when we get there, we'd know Christ.
- 16:03We know Christ, we know God, and does he know us? Are we out of time already? No. Okay.
- 16:10And that identity piece in that name that we get from Christ—,
- 16:16It's part of our identity when we get there in Revelation chapter 20. Yeah.
- 16:23Because those books will be opened and the names will be in those books.
- 16:27Yeah, pay attention. And I have to wonder what names are going to be.
- 16:30Which of my names is going to be in there? Yeah.
- 16:33And will Paul's name be in there or Saul's name be in there?
- 16:37But in that book of life, you're either in it or not. Yeah.
- 16:42And there's two books. One has all our deeds, all recorded. one right after
- 16:47another. And then the second book,
- 16:51if anyone's name is not found written in the book of life, he'll be thrown into the lake of fire.
- 16:58And I would say more and more as time goes on,
- 17:03that second book is the ones who really have the relationship with Jesus Christ to God the Father.
- 17:16I stand and saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne,
- 17:20and books were opened, and another book was opened, which is the book of life.
- 17:27The dead were judged according to what they had done, recorded in the books.
- 17:32The sea and everything gave up its dead.
- 17:35Then death and Hades were thrown in the lake, and if anybody's name was not,
- 17:40written in the book of life, he was thrown in the lake of fire.
- 17:43And it's more than just like, it's more than just your name, right?
- 17:47It's because God knows who you are. So what does it tell us about God that he
- 17:51isn't dealing with humanity as this like anonymous crowd of people?
- 17:55He knows who we are. Individually. Yeah. Yes.
- 18:01And can you imagine a God so infinite that the DNA that is in you right now,
- 18:10actually has ancient roots? Mm-hmm.
- 18:14And that he knew that all these Zimmermans from the past would boil down to this Alex guy.
- 18:22God knew that. Yeah. God knew that you'd be able to develop facial hair.
- 18:27Yep. And God knew your heart, even before you did, probably. Right.
- 18:33So we serve, we're given the privilege to serve a God who's willing to reveal
- 18:43himself so completely that, well,
- 18:48a book and black and white didn't quite do it.
- 18:51And these prophets didn't quite do it. And so he felt like a personal revelation
- 18:58of himself was necessary. And he gave us Jesus.
- 19:03And we've got four Gospels that do the best they can in black and white to reveal who Jesus is.
- 19:12But he couldn't reveal himself fully without the Holy Spirit.
- 19:19That's awesome. And what's interesting is the Spirit couldn't come until Jesus went back.
- 19:26And so then when Jesus went back to be with God in Acts chapter 1,
- 19:32there was a little hiatus in there.
- 19:34And then he sent the Spirit. Yeah. And what's interesting is that in 2 Corinthians
- 19:41chapter 5, it is that Spirit that is the seal guaranteeing our future. Yeah.
- 19:49Isn't that cool? That is the coolest part, right?
- 19:54Now, where did I go off? There we go. That's a beautiful gift that then seals
- 19:59our new identity, that God's not abandoning us.
- 20:03God thinks exactly about each one of us every day, all the time,
- 20:09wanting this relationship, pursuing a relationship with us, knowing us by name,
- 20:13knowing exactly who we are.
- 20:15And still, even though we fail, even though we give ourselves all sorts of other
- 20:20identities, still wants a relationship with us. Right. In fact, desires it so much,
- 20:29that he goes to great lengths to get our attention.
- 20:36And his desire is that we really call him Lord. Yeah. And I think we forget what Lord means.
- 20:42I think we think about English lords and saying, Oh, that would have been a no way.
- 20:47But it really would be CEO, chairman, CEO, chief executive officer.
- 20:56Are we going to let God be the chief executive officer of our life?
- 21:00In other words, we order our life in such a way that it reflects what he wants
- 21:04us to be doing, what values he wants us to live out, what vision he has for the day.
- 21:13And so I even have been practicing it to the point, well, okay,
- 21:17I've got these two options, Lord, you know, it's yours, it's you.
- 21:22Which option would you have me do?
- 21:26And it's amazing what comes out of those situations. And now it sort of becomes
- 21:31rote and I do it more often.
- 21:34And then I sort of think, well, it's sort of nice. I can just sit back and let the Lord do it. Yeah.
- 21:40And it's good stuff. It's good stuff. Yes, it is. In fact, it's amazing stuff,
- 21:44as to where he will put us where we haven't been before.
- 21:49And I just nudge you a little bit because when we talk about this identity,
- 21:54oh, yeah, I'm a Christian.
- 21:56And it's a moniker that we wear. And sometimes it's a necklace we wear or something like that.
- 22:02Yeah, you can't just give yourself a better name.
- 22:06The identity goes very deep and it's gotta be that all this Old Testament stuff
- 22:13yeah it reflects the values,
- 22:17but I fulfill that out of relationship rather than out of obligation,
- 22:23and if we do it in relationship it's not much of an obligation I mean big deal,
- 22:29it's gonna be it's gonna happen in us anyway right.
- 22:33Oh, man. Did I catch some of what we had? Oh, tons of it. I mean,
- 22:39we started with, you know, like what's in a name, then God, you know, changes people.
- 22:45So I was giving them a new name, giving us this new identity.
- 22:48And now we're talking about, you know, what does God's name mean for our identity?
- 22:54And so then we started looking at first examining yourself you know what kind
- 22:59of a name are you giving yourselves because a lot of the self-help stuff a lot
- 23:02of the modern culture the counselors the
- 23:04the therapists and stuff they're telling you to look inside yourself you know
- 23:09they're trying to build you up with self-help build up your self-esteem so that
- 23:12you can say okay i am this now oh i am this now okay oh i i am a healthier person
- 23:17because i run i can do these things you You know.
- 23:21You can't do it yourself. No. If you root your identity in that,
- 23:25there's going to be something comes along and is going to knock it down as easy
- 23:28as God docked out of the tower of Babel.
- 23:31And there's probably a better example there, but who you are has to be who God says you are.
- 23:37So it's no longer, you know, okay, I'm a divorced person. I'm a failure.
- 23:41I'm a angry person. I'm addicted. I'm ashamed. Any of those things.
- 23:45No, now it's, you're redeemed. Yes. You're loved.
- 23:50And I special, I'd nudge back and I'd say several of those monikers we give
- 23:56ourselves are actually probably put on there by Satan. Sure.
- 24:02And they're meant to draw us down. And one of the things that I've been working
- 24:06with some young people is the moniker of shame.
- 24:10Yeah. You know, they have lust. Can you imagine? Yeah.
- 24:15There was a day I did. And so it was so natural, and they don't know what to
- 24:21do with it, and they feel so bad about it, and Satan just says, yes.
- 24:25He just celebrates that. And so I practice a healing prayer and a deeper walk
- 24:32if you want to look at it sometime.
- 24:34And to practice that with a believing Christian, you have to be a believing
- 24:38Christian for that to be effective and allow them to hear Jesus.
- 24:43And when Jesus says, you know, I understand. Yes. And I forgive you.
- 24:50And then you ask, what else do you want? Jesus. What do you want this person to know next?
- 24:55And then we go deeper, and then we go deeper, and we go deeper.
- 25:00And it's just amazing how Jesus will speak to us if he's given a chance.
- 25:07And sometimes we don't give him a chance. And I'm just thankful for facilitators,
- 25:14that sometimes will help us.
- 25:15And I go to some as well that will help us hear Jesus more clearly in the here and now.
- 25:23Because we wear the name, we claim the name, but do we live the name?
- 25:38Right. I mean, that's the reflection piece. Are you living under the identity of Christ? Yeah.
- 25:46I just nudge because it's part of each communion service and almost every pastor
- 25:52will talk about it. And in 1 Corinthians 11, I think it's 27 to 35.
- 25:59Anyway, 27 to the end of the chapter. And in there is a piece where Paul says,
- 26:05before you partake in the elements of communion, you should examine yourself.
- 26:12And that is to sort of look at, am I in this relationship with Jesus,
- 26:17the one for whom I'm remembering his flesh and his blood? Right.
- 26:24And if you're just going there for juice and crackers, you could do that about anywhere.
- 26:29But if you're going to remember his body, then that means we've got to examine
- 26:33our relationship to him before we celebrate. Right.
- 26:37And doing that in the right way, too. Like, if we're going to anchor all this
- 26:40together, I mean, I just bring it back to, you know, what Peter was thinking
- 26:43in the garden after the crucifixion or after they haul him away to be crucified. Right.
- 26:48If you're someone who's sitting in that shame, imagine Peter. Yeah. Right?
- 26:53Oh, man. And then three days later, not just Jesus shows up,
- 26:58but Jesus comes looking for him. Yes.
- 27:01Like, guys, that gives me chills. Yes.
- 27:04Had breakfast ready, too. Yeah. Like, man, God is good.
- 27:11And he seeks you out.
- 27:13He wants to be with you. He wants that relationship with you.
- 27:16There's no shame there, guys.
- 27:19This song has been in my heart the last couple days.
- 27:25John Wayne lived right next door to Stuart Hamlin.
- 27:33They had similar lives, and they were drinkers and womanizers and those kind of things.
- 27:38And Stuart ended up going to a Billy Graham crusade and was saved at that Billy
- 27:46Graham crusade. And so when they met, they were next door neighbors.
- 27:52Stuart bought Errol Flynn's mansion and lived there.
- 27:57And John Wing was next door. And so Stuart was talking to John and said,
- 28:03you know, I got to tell you something that's happened in my life.
- 28:07And I said, I gave my life to Jesus and I've done this and I've done that.
- 28:10And I put all this behind me.
- 28:15And John responds and says, well, it's no secret what God can do.
- 28:22And so Stuart, I mean, I think it's took him back. And he created the psalm.
- 28:28It is no secret what God can do. What he's done for others, he'll do for you.
- 28:35With arms wide open, he'll welcome you.
- 28:39It is no secret what God can do.
- 28:46I'm sorry. I like it. I hope YouTube doesn't take it down for that, but.
- 28:52I won't recognize it. Yeah, hopefully. Well, yeah, go listen to it, maybe.
- 28:57But yeah, Stuart Hamlin. And yeah, it's just a neat testimony. Yes, it is.
- 29:03I love those personal stories that we can bring in here.
- 29:06Okay. You know, brothers and sisters, if you don't get anything out of this,
- 29:10other than the fact that God loves you, God seeks a relationship with you,
- 29:16He's brought Jesus as a guide and the Holy Spirit as a seal.
- 29:22If you've experienced the Holy Spirit as a seal and today you don't feel very close to,
- 29:30Ask him why. Just ask him why. That's a brave prayer. And he'll let you know.
- 29:36Maybe get a good Christian brother and have him walk with you.
- 29:40And break the bondage that Satan wants to hold us tight with.
- 29:46I think maybe if the church could, if every Christian who sits in church could
- 29:51find the freedom in Christ that God intends for us, my gracious sakes,
- 29:58Satan would be on the run. Yeah.
- 30:02Alright that wraps up our name series I think that's a good spot is it?
