Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: An Unhinged 19 Miles On a Treadmill
Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily body here.
- 0:18Speaker 2: You are listening to another episode of Five Minute Friday
- 0:23Speaker 2: from Hurdle. I have survived the unknown. The unknown being
- 0:32Speaker 2: that last weekend I did a nineteen mile run on
- 0:37Speaker 2: the treadmill. Now, the funniest thing about this was that I,
- 0:41Speaker 2: truly from the bottom of my soul, I was like,
- 0:45Speaker 2: there's no way I'm doing this.
- 0:47Speaker 1: There's no way.
- 0:48Speaker 2: For context, many of you are in the loop, but
- 0:51Speaker 2: there has been a really awful air quality here in
- 0:55Speaker 2: New York City, as well as many places around the
- 0:58Speaker 2: country from the wildfires that are happening up in Canada,
- 1:01Speaker 2: and so there was no way that I was going
- 1:04Speaker 2: to do my long run as prescribed outside over the weekend. Truly,
- 1:09Speaker 2: at different points last week I would be outside for
- 1:13Speaker 2: between five and fifteen minutes walking from point A to
- 1:16Speaker 2: point B, and so just like dizzy instant almost headache
- 1:22Speaker 2: felt awful. So even if I wanted to ignore the
- 1:27Speaker 2: air quality, there was absolutely no way that I knew
- 1:30Speaker 2: that I was going to be able to do that
- 1:31Speaker 2: run outside. I digress, I knew I was going to
- 1:34Speaker 2: do it indoors. I am getting ready in the morning,
- 1:39Speaker 2: I mentally know I'm going to go do some sort
- 1:41Speaker 2: of a treadmill run on Saturday.
- 1:43Speaker 1: But in the back of my mind, I'm like, just
- 1:47Speaker 1: get to double digits.
- 1:48Speaker 2: I was fully okay with breaking it up over the
- 1:50Speaker 2: course of two days.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I just wanted to get some effort done.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Now, this is something that I will do more often
- 1:56Speaker 2: than not when I'm traveling and just don't have the
- 1:59Speaker 2: time to clock together a lot of miles at once.
- 2:03Speaker 2: I firmly believe that this is one of those There's
- 2:06Speaker 2: a reason why the training plan is written in pencil.
- 2:08Speaker 2: Do the best you can with what you have moments,
- 2:11Speaker 2: and so if it's I'm going to run nineteen miles
- 2:15Speaker 2: or over the course of two days, or I'm not
- 2:17Speaker 2: going to run them at all, then it's always better
- 2:19Speaker 2: to run them over the course of the two days. Now,
- 2:22Speaker 2: the purpose of running nineteen twenty twenty one miles in
- 2:25Speaker 2: a marathon training block is because you are testing the stimulus, right,
- 2:29Speaker 2: You are working to feel what it's going to feel
- 2:32Speaker 2: like when you are running twenty six point two miles
- 2:36Speaker 2: on the day. Does that mean that if you break
- 2:38Speaker 2: up the nineteen mile run over two days, you're getting
- 2:40Speaker 2: the exact same stimulus.
- 2:42Speaker 1: No, it does not. You are not.
- 2:44Speaker 2: But again I stand by the it's better to do
- 2:47Speaker 2: something than nothing.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So I'm getting ready.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I decide to like film part of this process in
- 2:54Speaker 2: my bathroom, and I say the line that changes it all.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I say, do I think I'm going to do all
- 2:58Speaker 2: of this at once today? Absolutely not. I believe that
- 3:01Speaker 2: you have to be absolutely unhinged to run nineteen miles
- 3:05Speaker 2: on a treadmill. And then in that moment I knew
- 3:12Speaker 2: I am going to be absolutely.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Unhinged.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I mean, if I really got on there and it
- 3:19Speaker 2: felt crazy awful, then I would have decided against it. However,
- 3:24Speaker 2: it didn't feel awful. It didn't feel awful at all.
- 3:27Speaker 1: It reminds me of I in twenty fifteen.
- 3:31Speaker 2: It was I believe I ran the Dublin Marathon and
- 3:35Speaker 2: the New York City Marathon in the same week.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Dublin I believe.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I think, if I recall, they have it on Monday,
- 3:43Speaker 2: like Boston Marathon is on Monday. I ran the Dublin
- 3:45Speaker 2: Marathon on Monday, and then I ran the New York
- 3:47Speaker 2: City Marathon that Sunday. And the only reason I remember
- 3:53Speaker 2: the moment when I realized that I was going to
- 3:55Speaker 2: try to do both was when I realized that Dublin
- 3:58Speaker 2: was the week before New York and I was sitting
- 3:59Speaker 2: in to talking to this woman that worked at ASEX
- 4:01Speaker 2: at the time, and ASEX was the token sponsor for
- 4:04Speaker 2: both marathons. They had invited me to run Dublin and
- 4:07Speaker 2: I said to her, you know, like it would be
- 4:09Speaker 2: kind of crazy if we did both back to back,
- 4:12Speaker 2: and she said, only one way to find out, And
- 4:16Speaker 2: so that year I did them back to back. And
- 4:18Speaker 2: the rule that I had for myself just to disclaim,
- 4:20Speaker 2: I don't think that I would at this age. I
- 4:24Speaker 2: say this like I'm like hobbling around at this age.
- 4:27Speaker 2: I don't think that I would be able necessarily to
- 4:30Speaker 2: do something like that. I told myself that if I
- 4:33Speaker 2: got back to the States on Monday Tuesday and went
- 4:36Speaker 2: for a shakeout on Wednesday and I felt solid that
- 4:38Speaker 2: I would then run the New York marathon on Sunday.
- 4:40Speaker 1: And that's exactly what happened.
- 4:42Speaker 2: And I got very lucky and also so grateful that
- 4:46Speaker 2: the ASEX was sponsoring it and I had the ability
- 4:49Speaker 2: to do something like that. But what a crazy decision. Anyway,
- 4:53Speaker 2: back to this week's story. I get to the gym,
- 4:56Speaker 2: I think I walk in there around seven fifteen, and
- 5:01Speaker 2: there are no two ways about it. A long run
- 5:04Speaker 2: is a mental game. You can be extremely fit, but
- 5:08Speaker 2: if you do not have your mind right, you will
- 5:12Speaker 2: not succeed in the mission. It just won't work, especially
- 5:17Speaker 2: when you are literally standing in one place while moving
- 5:20Speaker 2: in one place. And so I got on the treadmill,
- 5:24Speaker 2: and the entire goal the entire time.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Was just break it up into little doables.
- 5:29Speaker 2: So I went into it thinking that I was going
- 5:32Speaker 2: to listen to music the whole time. Then I was
- 5:35Speaker 2: chatting with a friend, as one does when they're running
- 5:38Speaker 2: on a treadmill. Texting with a friend, she said I
- 5:41Speaker 2: would definitely have to watch a movie, So then I
- 5:42Speaker 2: put on talk about a downer but like great movie
- 5:46Speaker 2: voicemails for Isabelle. Now, my error was that I did
- 5:50Speaker 2: not think about the angle of the neck positioning. So
- 5:54Speaker 2: the phone was like in the tray down below, and
- 5:57Speaker 2: I wish that I had one of those sticky things
- 5:59Speaker 2: on the back so that I could have put it
- 6:01Speaker 2: right in front of me. Smart woman too treadmills over
- 6:04Speaker 2: she was running fourteen. That was actually really fun is
- 6:07Speaker 2: that I was totally in a community of people that
- 6:10Speaker 2: were just as insane and slightly unhinged as I was.
- 6:13Speaker 2: There were people all around me running long, which was
- 6:17Speaker 2: very unifying and just like felt like I was part
- 6:20Speaker 2: of something, and I started bringing it up into little doables.
- 6:25Speaker 2: So it was like, all right, I'm going to run
- 6:26Speaker 2: this five k and warm up and then I'm going
- 6:28Speaker 2: to turn up the pace just a little bit. But
- 6:30Speaker 2: the entire time, in my mind, pace was not something
- 6:34Speaker 2: that was super important. I just wanted to be able
- 6:36Speaker 2: to maintain for as long as I could. So I
- 6:40Speaker 2: run the five k. Then I turned on voicemails for Isabelle.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Then I'm like, okay, well this will take up about
- 6:45Speaker 2: two hours, and I'm just kind of mindlessly on the treadmill,
- 6:48Speaker 2: half listening, half watching again because of the head positioning,
- 6:52Speaker 2: And then I really started to do a lot of
- 6:54Speaker 2: mental gymnastics once I got to thirteen. And you do
- 6:58Speaker 2: the reverse math. I don't think that's actually the right
- 7:01Speaker 2: term for this, but you do the math, and I'm like, okay,
- 7:04Speaker 2: nineteen six miles. I can run six miles. I run
- 7:07Speaker 2: six miles all the time. I ran six miles on
- 7:08Speaker 2: a treadmill the other day. And then you start to
- 7:11Speaker 2: debunk the negative thoughts that might slip in. So it's
- 7:16Speaker 2: giving myself. I am statements, I am capable of doing this.
- 7:19Speaker 2: I am someone who can run six miles. I have
- 7:23Speaker 2: done things that are harder than this. Talking about moments
- 7:26Speaker 2: that have really helped me. Remember who I am. In
- 7:29Speaker 2: the build up to the twenty eighteen Boston Marathon, the
- 7:32Speaker 2: one that does one and it was an absolute insane
- 7:36Speaker 2: downpour and there were winds and it was hailing when
- 7:38Speaker 2: it started wild, I did one training run in the rain,
- 7:44Speaker 2: and at that point I was never someone that would
- 7:48Speaker 2: run in the rain. I was like, this is not
- 7:49Speaker 2: for me. It's not I don't want to get wet,
- 7:51Speaker 2: it's not for me. But that one training run that
- 7:53Speaker 2: I did in the rain on the day of the
- 7:57Speaker 2: very insane weather conditions marathon was what instilled in me, Okay,
- 8:03Speaker 2: you can do this. And that day, truly, out of
- 8:06Speaker 2: any run I have ever done in my life, taught
- 8:09Speaker 2: me that I can do hard things. And so then
- 8:12Speaker 2: in this moment on a treadmill, fast forward eight years later,
- 8:17Speaker 2: I am reminded I can do hard things and that
- 8:21Speaker 2: is something that I want to be. The takeaway from this,
- 8:24Speaker 2: no one needs to run nineteen miles on the treadmill.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I would not recommend this to my worst enemy. It
- 8:30Speaker 2: is a choice that I made on that particular day.
- 8:34Speaker 2: And what happens when you ask yourself what am I
- 8:38Speaker 2: capable of? What happens when you remember who it is
- 8:43Speaker 2: that you really are?
- 8:44Speaker 1: Yeah? For me, I am someone who does hard things.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Fact, maybe it can be interpreted at times, or at
- 8:51Speaker 2: least you can feel that way, But I know that
- 8:55Speaker 2: I am capable of showing up when things feel hard.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I recognize that things can feel hard, and I am
- 9:03Speaker 2: capable of doing them.
- 9:04Speaker 1: It's an and both.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Yeah, And so for me that day, the mental gymnastics
- 9:11Speaker 2: was not a lot of Oh, you can't do this,
- 9:14Speaker 2: Oh are you really going to keep going?
- 9:16Speaker 1: Oh?
- 9:16Speaker 2: Like negative self talk. It was just different affirmations and
- 9:20Speaker 2: reminding myself of the things I knew to be true.
- 9:24Speaker 2: We have the evidence. More often than not, we have
- 9:27Speaker 2: the evidence. We have instances of moments in our life
- 9:32Speaker 2: when we showed up to do hard things.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:35Speaker 2: And so when you reflect on those moments and you
- 9:37Speaker 2: use that evidence to remember who it is that you
- 9:40Speaker 2: are in the next installment of difficult moments and the
- 9:43Speaker 2: next circumstance, when you have just a quick second where
- 9:46Speaker 2: you might doubt yourself, that is going to be the
- 9:49Speaker 2: thing that helps.
- 9:50Speaker 1: You move forward.
- 9:51Speaker 2: And so on Saturday, when I showed up to that
- 9:54Speaker 2: treadmill and I debated if I was going to do
- 9:56Speaker 2: thirteen fifteen, seventeen nineteen, kept bringing that evidence forward. And
- 10:03Speaker 2: so that's what I encourage you to do in the
- 10:05Speaker 2: moments when that gremlin might be kicking in a little bit.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Yeah again, I am not I still think it's unhinged behavior,
- 10:14Speaker 2: but this is an unhinged thing that I did that
- 10:18Speaker 2: is going to remind me exactly who I am the
- 10:23Speaker 2: next time a difficult moment arises, And what a dope opportunity.
- 10:27Speaker 2: That is My listener prompt for you this week. What
- 10:32Speaker 2: was the last difficult thing that you overcame and what
- 10:38Speaker 2: did you learn from that moment? What was the last
- 10:41Speaker 2: difficult thing that you overcame and what can you learn
- 10:45Speaker 2: from that moment? And now let's queue up a listener question.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Here we go.
- 10:53Speaker 2: I just put a questions box on my Instagram from
- 10:56Speaker 2: Kim Emily loved the show. What's your current running lifting
- 11:01Speaker 2: split ahead of Sydney? So right now I am running
- 11:07Speaker 2: four days a week and lifting three days a week.
- 11:11Speaker 2: I don't have a full dedicated rest day, although for
- 11:14Speaker 2: me Sunday's lift feels a lot like a rest day.
- 11:17Speaker 2: There's like one main lift I believe right now it's squats,
- 11:20Speaker 2: and then the rest of it is just accessory work.
- 11:23Speaker 2: And that works for me. That's what feels good for
- 11:26Speaker 2: me in my body. That's what feels good for me
- 11:29Speaker 2: as someone who loves to move in the morning.
- 11:31Speaker 1: That's what feels good for me right now.
- 11:33Speaker 2: With that said, as we get closer to the marathon,
- 11:37Speaker 2: Sydney Marathon is August thirtieth, I am planning on going
- 11:40Speaker 2: down to lifting two days a week and running four
- 11:43Speaker 2: days a week, and so my peak week for mileage
- 11:47Speaker 2: is week seventeen. I'm in week fifteen right now, and
- 11:50Speaker 2: I think for me that might be between thirty five
- 11:53Speaker 2: and forty miles. I'm not in the scheme of marathon training.
- 11:57Speaker 2: There's a wide spectrum of the miles that you could accumulate.
- 12:01Speaker 1: I am on the.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Lower end of the spectrum in terms of miles that
- 12:04Speaker 2: I'm accumulating. I like to do more quality, less quantity,
- 12:10Speaker 2: so I will, like I said, go down to two
- 12:12Speaker 2: days a week lifting, four days a week running, one
- 12:16Speaker 2: full dedicated rest day. On that day, I'll still do
- 12:20Speaker 2: some sort of active recovery, whether that's a walk. I've
- 12:24Speaker 2: been dialed in on closing my Apple watchings for the
- 12:27Speaker 2: past year plus, so for me, that's ten thousand steps
- 12:30Speaker 2: a day. I think the calories although like I'm not
- 12:33Speaker 2: someone who cares too much about that, but the calories
- 12:36Speaker 2: are set at maybe six hundred burned and then ten
- 12:39Speaker 2: standing hours. So for me, even on a recovery day,
- 12:42Speaker 2: I'm making sure that I'm active to an extent, meandering around,
- 12:47Speaker 2: enjoying myself, reading, you know, all the good stuff, norma, tech, booting.
- 12:51Speaker 2: And that's the training split for right now. I've said
- 12:56Speaker 2: this before, I'll say it again. My training split might
- 12:59Speaker 2: not work for you.
- 13:01Speaker 1: This is for me. It's what feels good in my body.
- 13:04Speaker 2: I also work with other people to figure out my coaching,
- 13:08Speaker 2: so specifically with my strength work, I work one on
- 13:11Speaker 2: one with a trainer through the Future app. If you
- 13:15Speaker 2: are listening to this and you're interested in the Future app,
- 13:17Speaker 2: I have a code for you, and I'll also put
- 13:19Speaker 2: it into the show notes. I forget what the discount
- 13:22Speaker 2: is right now, I want to say, maybe it's like
- 13:24Speaker 2: your first month for ninety nine dollars, So I have
- 13:26Speaker 2: that for you if you're interested in it. But I love, love,
- 13:30Speaker 2: love the future app and the trainer that I'm working with.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I'm working with Runna right now for.
- 13:36Speaker 2: My marathon plan, which I have absolutely loved. I also
- 13:41Speaker 2: love it knowing that I have a run coach certification,
- 13:45Speaker 2: so for me, I can look at the workouts that
- 13:47Speaker 2: it creates for me and then interpret and or adjust
- 13:51Speaker 2: based on how I feel in my body what's going on.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I have had workouts over the last few training blocks
- 13:59Speaker 2: that I've done with Runna that have involved workouts that
- 14:03Speaker 2: I've never seen before that I've never done before in
- 14:06Speaker 2: the formatting and the type, in the duration of the
- 14:08Speaker 2: different efforts, and it's just been really fun. It's been
- 14:11Speaker 2: a really fun way for me to diversify my run
- 14:14Speaker 2: training considering that I've been at this for a while now.
- 14:18Speaker 2: So those are the things that I'm doing that's what
- 14:20Speaker 2: works for me. I will say that the closer I
- 14:26Speaker 2: get to the marathon, I'm also extremely attentive, as I
- 14:31Speaker 2: try to be all the time, but to my inputs
- 14:33Speaker 2: and my outputs, I am someone who loves to own
- 14:35Speaker 2: my know I know that saying no is me practicing
- 14:40Speaker 2: self care. So sometimes that's events, Sometimes that's commitments. Sometimes
- 14:44Speaker 2: that's like altering a plan with a friend. Someone wants
- 14:47Speaker 2: to go out to a late dinner and I want
- 14:49Speaker 2: to get to bed earlier. It's like, Okay, I might
- 14:51Speaker 2: not be able to do that, but what if we
- 14:53Speaker 2: did this instead? So my training split might be run
- 14:58Speaker 2: four days left, two days in the last two three
- 15:00Speaker 2: weeks leading up to the marathon. But the biggest thing
- 15:03Speaker 2: I really exercise in that lead up to the main
- 15:07Speaker 2: day is owning my now.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Hope that helped.
- 15:11Speaker 2: As always, I hope that you are compelled to leave
- 15:15Speaker 2: me a listener question, to send me something.
- 15:17Speaker 1: You can email me over at Hello dot us.
- 15:20Speaker 2: You can also comment on YouTube to everyone that watched
- 15:24Speaker 2: over there last week.
- 15:25Speaker 1: This is really fun.
- 15:27Speaker 2: I'm having a really good time with it. To be
- 15:30Speaker 2: someone that launches a podcast every Tuesday and Friday is
- 15:34Speaker 2: one thing. But to launch the podcast, then to put
- 15:36Speaker 2: things on social, then to put things on YouTube. I'm like,
- 15:39Speaker 2: oh my god, there are so many avenues that we
- 15:41Speaker 2: are doing this now. But I hope that you like
- 15:43Speaker 2: watching the podcast, like I said, I'm working on getting
- 15:46Speaker 2: the Tuesday episodes up here as soon as I can.
- 15:49Speaker 2: But in the meantime, your support everywhere means the world.
- 15:52Speaker 2: So please please please comment on the YouTube, subscribe, but
- 15:58Speaker 2: wherever you get your podcasts, please please listen.
- 16:01Speaker 1: To listen to the YouTube, please.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Leave a comment, leave a comment in a review. Oh man, Okay,
- 16:12Speaker 2: I think it's time I wrap this up. I appreciate
