Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in our second to
- 0:19last episode of Psalm 1/19, and today we're covering verses 161
- 0:25to 168. That's 161 to 168.
- 0:30And all of these verses start with the Hebrew letter sin or
- 0:36shin, sin or shin. And whether it's sin or shin,
- 0:41the the Hebrew letter kind of looks like AW of sorts in the
- 0:47English language. And if it is sin, it's got a
- 0:52little dot over the third, you know, kind of upper line there.
- 1:00And if it's got a dot over the first upper line, this works a
- 1:05little bit better. If you're watching the video
- 1:06podcast, it's got a dot over that initial line, then it's the
- 1:12letter shin. And so we are, we have been
- 1:17traveling through Psalm 119. This is our 21st of 22 episodes
- 1:23in Psalm 119. And all of these verses have
- 1:26been about the Word of God and the Word of God is not just I
- 1:32hope that this has been really clear as we've gone through.
- 1:35The Word of God is not just the Bible as a literary unit.
- 1:44It is also like the commands of God contained therein.
- 1:49It's the character of God that we find in that.
- 1:52It's not simply. OK.
- 1:54If I read through, you know, the read through a portion of my
- 2:00Bible today, then yeah, I assume that good things are going to
- 2:04happen to me. No, it's it's actually much
- 2:06better. It's much deeper than that.
- 2:09It is as God's Holy Spirit living and working in me and in
- 2:15you. As He uses His Word to inform us
- 2:20about Him and his nature and his character and his victories and
- 2:24his the ways in which He designed our world and our lives
- 2:29to work. We are transformed.
- 2:32We are made new. We find that we can live life in
- 2:38the way that God made us to as a result of Him continuing to work
- 2:45in and through us. And so we can love the Word of
- 2:48God for what it gives us and what it shows us, which is who
- 2:54our God is, what He's like, what He's done, what His promises
- 2:58are, and as a result, who we are called to be and what we are
- 3:02called to do, even in this Dark World.
- 3:06Well, let's begin in verse 161 and we'll see what the Lord has
- 3:09for us today. Princess have persecuted me
- 3:12without cause, but my heart fears only your Word.
- 3:17I rejoice over Your promise like one who finds vast treasure.
- 3:22I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love Your instruction.
- 3:28I praise You 7 times a day for Your righteous judgments.
- 3:32Abundant peace belongs to those who love Your instruction.
- 3:36Nothing makes them stumble. Yahweh, I hope for Your
- 3:40salvation and carry out Your commands.
- 3:44I obey Your decrees and love them greatly.
- 3:47I obey Your precepts and decrees, for all My ways are
- 3:52before You. Well let's look at these verses
- 3:56and see what we can learn for today.
- 3:58Verse 161 Prince's have persecuted me without cause, but
- 4:03my heart fears only your word. I think here of David that this
- 4:08would describe him so many times in his life as he interacted
- 4:12with King Saul and Israel, as he interacted with many of the
- 4:16Philistine kings and rulers, as he interacted with people that
- 4:21were over specific cities many times that abused their position
- 4:28and authority in order to bring him harm.
- 4:32And so he experienced hardship without reason that he was not
- 4:38one at that point in his life that was doing wrong by Saul or
- 4:42doing wrong by whatever Philistine king.
- 4:45And yet they were attacking him. But here he says, God, instead
- 4:49of fearing people, instead of fearing those that can hurt my
- 4:53body, I am going to only fear, respect, tremble before your
- 4:59word. What makes you afraid?
- 5:02Do the threats of other people make you afraid?
- 5:07Does the environment in which you find yourself in 21st
- 5:11century America or Canada or Europe or wherever you might be,
- 5:17does that cause you to fear? Can I ask you why does it cause
- 5:22you to fear? What do you truly have to lose?
- 5:27I've been blown away just over and over again over the past
- 5:32several months by the words of Jesus as he tells us in Matthew
- 5:4010. I want to say I'm going to have
- 5:43to go back through and look at the exact reference.
- 5:44You can. You can Google it or search the
- 5:46verse. You'll find it as well.
- 5:48But in Matthew 10, Jesus says this.
- 5:50Do not fear those who can kill the body and after that can do
- 5:56nothing else but fear Him who can cast you body and soul into
- 6:02hell. And I think for my life I have
- 6:05far too often feared the approval of people.
- 6:10I have feared the displeasure of those, maybe in my church, maybe
- 6:17in my family, maybe, and you know, mentors, teachers,
- 6:21whatever it might be. And I feared them and their
- 6:25opinion of me more than I feared my God's estimation and opinion
- 6:30of me. And the truth is God's opinion
- 6:33is the only one that matters. It doesn't matter if you know
- 6:36every person in Essex and Middle River likes me.
- 6:41If God is displeased with me, then all the approval of
- 6:44mankind, it means nothing. It doesn't matter if everyone,
- 6:48even at Tabernacle Baptist Church is happy with me.
- 6:51If I am not following what I know that the Lord would have me
- 6:54to do, then I am in sin before my God.
- 6:59And so we always have to choose who are we going to fear?
- 7:03Who are we going to be afraid of?
- 7:05We can either choose to fear God or fear man.
- 7:09And when we fear man, we will change what we do in order.
- 7:16We will change what we know that God would have us to do in order
- 7:20that people may be pleased with us.
- 7:22The unfortunate thing is, people will never ultimately be pleased
- 7:26with us. You are never going to be
- 7:28someone's perfect, ideal person in every way.
- 7:31You're always going to let someone down somehow.
- 7:34So don't live for their approval.
- 7:36Live for the approval of God. As you live for the approval of
- 7:39God, you will, you will many times find yourself in people's
- 7:44good graces because they know you're not going to lie to them,
- 7:47you're not going to cheat them, you're not going to gossip about
- 7:51them. You know, all that kind of
- 7:52stuff. And that can be good and that
- 7:53can foster some good relationships.
- 7:56But realize, make obeying and following God preeminent, and
- 8:02then expect that for others as well.
- 8:06Like as you interact with your fellow Christians, make what's
- 8:11most important. Not what you think that they
- 8:14should do, but make the most important thing.
- 8:18Are you doing what you think that God wants you to?
- 8:20Did you respond in the way that you think God would want you to
- 8:24to that situation as Jesus and the word of God and the will of
- 8:28God is that becomes the focus man.
- 8:31All of our churches will be better for it.
- 8:32Our small groups will be better for it.
- 8:35You know, I I think of myself even as an elder with our other
- 8:40elders here at Tabernacle. We will be better off as we
- 8:43don't say, what does Brian want? What does you know Owen want?
- 8:47What does so and so want? No, no, no, let's not look at
- 8:50what people want. Let's look at the word and say
- 8:52what does the word have for us to do?
- 8:54And as we follow the word, we can find out that we really
- 8:59don't need to fear anyone else. We just need to fear God.
- 9:03Verse 162 I rejoice over a promise like one who finds vast
- 9:08treasure does scripture, does the Bible, does it bring joy to
- 9:14your life? I got to tell you guys this.
- 9:17This is something that is probably a little harder for me
- 9:22to imagine being different than the way that I currently
- 9:28experience it. So I, I grew up memorizing lots
- 9:33of scripture. I think I've mentioned on here
- 9:35before, I, I memorized over the course of, you know, my, my
- 9:39childhood and, and teen years, probably 13 books of Scripture
- 9:45from the New Testament. And so I always like learned a
- 9:49lot about the Bible, but in college and especially past
- 9:55college as I began reading, you know, modern translations of
- 9:59Scripture, the word just came alive in such an incredible way
- 10:06that I got so much joy out of it.
- 10:09I've mentioned before on here many times, and I will continue
- 10:12to do so till I'm dead. The Bible Project and their
- 10:16their podcasts and their different like classroom classes
- 10:19and all of that have just made me feel like there is nothing
- 10:23cooler, better, more worthy of my time than the word of God.
- 10:29And so I want to encourage you find whatever really helps light
- 10:35that spark for that love and that joy for the Word of God in
- 10:40you. Frankly, I tell you this, if
- 10:43Tabernacle talk doesn't help you, like get in the Word, then
- 10:47don't listen to me. Like if, if Tabernacle talk
- 10:50makes you go, the Bible's kind of boring, or at least the way
- 10:53that Brian's presenting, it's kind of boring.
- 10:55Well then don't listen to me like I will give you 70
- 10:59different resources. I I regularly look at and listen
- 11:04to other churches preaching, even some from some of my
- 11:08friends in the area, Joel Kurz with the Garden Church, Matt
- 11:12Robinson with Bethlehem Church. I listen to my friend Pastor
- 11:17Michael Bosworth at Ridge Point Church in Wenatchee, WA.
- 11:24Oh, Josh Tice with Southern Hills Church in Las Vegas.
- 11:28I listen to these guys because they help me love the word more.
- 11:34Frankly, I, I think Matt Robinson's a hilarious preacher.
- 11:39I, I love being able to listen to him.
- 11:41Josh Tice is one of those ones that every time that I listen to
- 11:45him, I go, man, I love the word. The word is exciting.
- 11:48The word is vital. It's alive.
- 11:50And so I want to know more of the word of God.
- 11:54I want to tell other people about what I'm learning right
- 11:56now through listening to this. Find people, find podcasts, find
- 12:02sermons and and and churches that you are able to listen to
- 12:06that can help stoke and further your love for the word of God,
- 12:09because it is vast treasure that we need to rejoice over.
- 12:14And so I want to encourage you pursue pursue things that help
- 12:19you have a love for the word. If you have any questions about
- 12:23that or if you're like, all right, Brian, I just really love
- 12:28super practical. Here's what to do as a result of
- 12:33the the Bible stuff. Do you have a resource for that?
- 12:35I absolutely do the strength for the day podcast.
- 12:39That's my, my pastor back in Washington state, Dennis
- 12:43Fountain. He does a strength for the day
- 12:46podcast. That one's incredibly practical.
- 12:49Like he's a very applicational preacher.
- 12:52And so he, he will be able to give you a lot of OK, here's
- 12:54what you walk away and do as a result of the if you're like,
- 12:59man, I really want to, you know, dig deep into it.
- 13:02The Bible Project podcast and the Bible Talk podcast.
- 13:07Both of those would be excellent resources.
- 13:10If you're like, man, I really want just a super, you know,
- 13:16basic kind of look at stuff. You can look at Everyday Truth
- 13:22podcast with Pastor Kurt Skelly down in I think it's
- 13:26Fredericksburg, VA and he's got a great podcast, Everyday Truth.
- 13:33I'm actually this year walking through with my wife, Tim Wilde
- 13:39Smith. Tim Wilde Smith has a book
- 13:43called the Daily Scripture Notebook, or it might be
- 13:48guidebook, and he's doing a podcast as well, going through
- 13:54those weekly readings. And so they're reading through
- 13:57Scripture. And so I'm doing that with
- 13:59Samantha this year just so we can continue to kind of, you
- 14:02know, grow and learn together as as a couple into what God would
- 14:06have for us. And so that would be a great
- 14:10resource to look at. There's one called the Bible
- 14:14Recap. I believe that's the title the
- 14:17Bible recap. It's got a blue cover on it and
- 14:21I think that's with Tara Lee Cobble.
- 14:25My buddy Matt Melton has used it for a couple of the of years.
- 14:29Matt, if you see this, if you're watching this on like Facebook
- 14:31or YouTube, throw in, you know, the link or whatever for that,
- 14:36if you, if you want to, because that's a great resource that
- 14:40even my friend Mike Bosworth uses with his family and with
- 14:43his two daughters that are a little younger.
- 14:47And so there's just so many great resources.
- 14:49There is no excuse for us to not like be in the word of God other
- 14:55than our own, like laziness and willingness to reject spending
- 15:00time. God's made it super easy for us
- 15:02in the 21st century. We have to take advantage of it.
- 15:06That's all I'll say on that end for now, verse 163.
- 15:09I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love your instruction.
- 15:14God's word is truth. All of our stuff, it can be
- 15:18lies. Whatever we have that runs
- 15:22contrary to the word of God is a lie.
- 15:24It doesn't matter what people's thoughts are, what their
- 15:26opinions are. If it runs contrary to the word
- 15:29of God, then we are in the wrong.
- 15:32This is something that can be really easy for some people when
- 15:39it comes to some items. So there's some people, if I
- 15:41would say like, hey, marriage is between one man and one woman
- 15:46for one lifetime, faithfully committed entirely to each
- 15:50other, in which emotional and financial and spiritual and
- 15:58physical intimacy happens only within that relationship.
- 16:03Some people would be like, yeah, you know, tell it to the culture
- 16:07and other people, like they might struggle with those sense
- 16:11of same sex attraction and things like that.
- 16:14And so they might say, OK, well, you know, maybe that's just, you
- 16:19know, old timey thoughts and but but now God, you know, has kind
- 16:24of expanded his mercy. So we're fine to be able to
- 16:28marry a man and a man or a woman and a woman, but we would have
- 16:33to say God is right, we are wrong.
- 16:36And so we we bow to Scripture. And some people might be like,
- 16:40yeah, you tell him, but I might say, OK, God tells us to love
- 16:43our enemies, to love the poor, to love the immigrant, to care
- 16:48for the fatherless. And you might have people that
- 16:51would really champion, you know, biblical marriage when it comes
- 16:55to biblical generosity and love of the foreigner.
- 16:59They might go, well, you don't understand, Like they're all
- 17:03dangerous. And so I can't, I can't like
- 17:06love them or, you know, this, this fatherless person, they
- 17:10haven't earned this money and I have earned money.
- 17:13And so how, why should they get to have any of my money?
- 17:18And I would say by the same token that we say we follow what
- 17:22God says in marriage, we follow what God says when it comes to
- 17:26our other political things. We follow God's instructions
- 17:29when it comes to the generosity with our money.
- 17:31We follow God's instructions when we love everyone,
- 17:35regardless of what their ethnicity is, what their country
- 17:39of origin is, that we say you are a human being created in the
- 17:43image of God. And so I love and I care for
- 17:46you. And anything that would tell me
- 17:48otherwise is a falsehood, is a lie.
- 17:51Any worldview, any political party that says you have to hate
- 17:55the foreigner, you have to dislike people from these
- 17:58particular nations and you should love people from these
- 18:01other nations, that is a falsehood.
- 18:03That is a lie from the devil just as much as those that would
- 18:07say, well, I can do whatever with my body that I want as a
- 18:12consenting adult. Or maybe like, Oh yeah, I will
- 18:16be abstinent until marriage, but I'm going to redefine marriage.
- 18:20I would say to both of these individuals, no, we have to go
- 18:24back to the word of God to say this is the way that we think
- 18:28about things. This is the way that we operate.
- 18:31Not because I a, a, a president or a political party or a
- 18:38senator says, oh, here's the talking points that we should
- 18:41have. No, let's go to the word and
- 18:42say, what does the Bible say? And that's the only thing that I
- 18:45care about. I don't care about being in line
- 18:48with the Republicans. I don't care about being in line
- 18:50or being in vogue with the Democrats or with the
- 18:53Libertarians or with the Green Party or with, you know,
- 18:56whatever else have you. I want to be biblically
- 18:59faithful. If that puts me in line with
- 19:02some things on the the Republican side or with the
- 19:05Democrat side, cool. But I'm not looking to align
- 19:09myself with them. I want them to align themselves
- 19:12with the Lord. So that's a little bit of a
- 19:16rabbit trail, but I, I think that the Lord would want us to
- 19:20remember the falsehoods that we hate are not just the falsehoods
- 19:24that other people embrace, but that we with our idol factory
- 19:29hearts, we prop up falsehoods ourselves as well.
- 19:34And so we should look at the ways in which we have allowed
- 19:38the world and Satan to deceive us and even our own flesh to
- 19:43deceive us. And we say, no, everything gets
- 19:46subjected to the word of God. And if it doesn't line up with
- 19:49the word, it's a falsehood. It's a lie from the Father of
- 19:53lies. All right, I'm going to end here
- 19:55pretty quick 'cause we're hitting about that 19 minute
- 19:57mark. Verse 164, I praise you 7 times
- 20:00a day for your righteous judgment.
- 20:02This is over and over again. It's the number of completion of
- 20:05perfection, of maturity, says God.
- 20:09I'm just going to praise you all the time because your judgments
- 20:11are awesome. It's upright.
- 20:13You have dealt fairly. Verse 165, Abundant peace
- 20:17belongs to those who love your instruction.
- 20:20Nothing makes them stumble. Or in the old King James.
- 20:23Perfect peace have they that love thy law, and nothing shall
- 20:28offend them. Perfect peace, have they that
- 20:30love thy law, and nothing shall offend them.
- 20:34There's some people that are just offended and hurt all the
- 20:37time by everything. And I always want to say look
- 20:43back at the word, like look at this verse.
- 20:45Abundant peace belongs to those who love your instruction.
- 20:49Nothing makes them stumble. If you're constantly being
- 20:52tripped up by I can't believe they said this or I bet that
- 20:55they meant this or Can you believe that they did this?
- 20:59I want to encourage you like love God's word because when you
- 21:01love God's word, you recognize, yeah, people are imperfect.
- 21:04I am imperfect too. I can have grace for them
- 21:07because God has had grace for me.
- 21:09And so I'm not going to constantly be offended by
- 21:13everything that everyone sorry, I'm not going to constantly be
- 21:17offended by everything that everyone else is doing.
- 21:19I'm going to choose to say, Nope, I've got peace.
- 21:23I've got abundant peace because I love the word of God And I
- 21:27know who I am in light of that. And I know who other people are
- 21:30in light of that. I know that I've been extended
- 21:32grace and forgiveness. And so I can show that to others
- 21:35too. I know at the end of the story
- 21:37is I know that God will vindicate me.
- 21:39And so I don't have to take revenge.
- 21:41I don't have to put in all this effort to vindicate myself.
- 21:45I can realize that like my eternity is secure and so I'm
- 21:48fine no matter what anyone else says or does.
- 21:52That is an excuse other people's bad behavior, but it at least
- 21:55means that I don't have to walk around constantly offended and
- 21:58stumbling at everything that others are doing.
- 22:02Verse 166 Yahweh, I hope for your salvation and carry out
- 22:06your commands that salvation that rescue from the Lord.
- 22:10It is coming and I'm thankful that God saved me.
- 22:14It'll be I think about 20 years this this coming December that
- 22:19I've been saved eternally that I was justified, but I'm looking
- 22:22forward to that day when either Jesus returns or he calls me
- 22:27home and I look forward to that salvation.
- 22:30That is the point of the word of God is as we, as we do the
- 22:36things that God has called us to do, we recognize my salvation
- 22:38doesn't come from me doing these things.
- 22:40It comes from God. And so I do the commands, but
- 22:43I'm waiting for God and for his salvation.
- 22:47Verse 167 I obey your decrees and love them greatly.
- 22:51Do you love the word of God verse 168 I obey your precepts
- 22:56and decrees, for all my ways are before you.
- 22:59God sees everything that you do. God sees every word that you say
- 23:03God sees every thought that you think.
- 23:06Do you choose to walk in God's way?
- 23:09Do you choose to follow him knowing that he sees everything
- 23:13that you do unlike the unlike the fictional Santa Claus, God
- 23:22genuinely does see you when you're sleeping.
- 23:25He knows when you're awake. He knows if you've been that are
- 23:27good. And so as a result, the psalmist
- 23:30says there I obey your precepts and decrees recognizing God's
- 23:35omniscience that he sees and he knows everything.
- 23:38Will you choose to follow him. Well, thank you for tuning in
- 23:41today. No, I went a little long, but
- 23:43thank you for your patience. Next episode we conclude Psalm
- 23:49119 and then we'll we'll hit Psalm 1:20 to 1:50 and we'll be
- 23:55off to the races to finish Book 5 of Psalms.
- 23:57Thank you for tuning in. Have a wonderful day.
