- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The feast of saints Cornelius in Cyprian, September 16 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's feast, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following. Cornelius was a Roman and was sovereign pontiff under the emperor's gallus and volusion. He had to oppose Novation, the first antipope.
- 0:39He took from the catacombs the bodies of the apostles Peter and Paul and reverently translated them to the places where they had suffered martyrdom. He was arrested by order of the emperors and beheaded in the year of our Lord 253. Cyprian was a barrister at Carthage when he was converted to Christianity. A short time afterwards, he was ordained a priest and became bishop of Carthage. It would be superfluous, says Saint Jerome, to speak of his genius since his works are more brilliant than the sun.
- 1:25This illustrious father of the Latin church lived in one of the most troubles periods for the church in Africa. He was martyred five years after Saint Cornelius on the day when this holy Pope's remains were translated to Rome. That explains why their names are united by the liturgy at the canon of the mass. Today is commemorated Saint Euphemia. Of her, Monsignor William R.
- 1:57Kelly writes, Saint Euphemia, a virgin of Chalcedon, suffered in the persecution continued by the successors of Diocletian. About the year 03/2007, the Council of Chalcedon was held in her sepulchral church. Saint Lucy and Geminianus, two other martyrs who suffered in the same persecution are commemorated with Saint Euphemia. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen.
- 2:39The introit. Let the sighing of the captive, o lord, reach thy presence. Pour out sevenfold retribution into the laps of our neighbors. Take vengeance for the blood of thy saints that has been shed. O God, the heathen have broken into thy inheritance.
- 3:02They have profaned thy temple, thy sanctuary, and brought Jerusalem low as an orchard wall. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Let the sighing of the captive, O Lord, reach thy presence. Pour out sevenfold retribution into the laps of our neighbors.
- 3:37Take vengeance for the blood of thy saints that has been shed. The Collect. Let us pray. May the festival of the blessed martyrs bishops Cornelius and Cyprian, gain us thy protection, we pray thee, O Lord, and may their holy prayer win for us thy favor. A commemoration of saints Euphemia, Lucy, and Geminianus.
- 4:09Grant, oh lord, a joyful issue to our prayers. May we, who year by year devoutly keep the day on which thy holy martyrs, Euphemia, Lucy, and Geminianus suffered death, follow them also in steadfastness of faith, through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the book of wisdom. The souls of the just are in the hands of God beyond the reach of their tormentors malice.
- 4:59Dead? Fools think so. Think their end loss. They're leaving us annihilation. But all is well with them.
- 5:11The world sees nothing but the pains they endure. They themselves have eyes only for what is immortal. So light their sufferings. So great the gain they win. God all the while did but test them and testing them found them worthy of him.
- 5:36His gold tried in the crucible. His burnt sacrifice graciously accepted. They do but wait for the time of their deliverance. Then they will shine out these just souls unconquerable as the sparks that break out now here, now there among the stubble. Theirs to sit in judgment upon nations to subdue whole peoples under a Lord whose reign shall last forever.
- 6:19The gradual, glorious is God and his saints, wonderful in majesty, marvelous in his doings. How magnificent, Lord, is the strength of thy right hand, that right hand which has shattered the enemy. Alleluia. Alleluia. The bodies of the saints lie in peace.
- 6:47Their renown lasts on age after age. Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time, Jesus said to his disciples, when you hear of wars and revolts, do not be alarmed by it. Such things must happen first, but the end will not come all at once.
- 7:20Then he told them, nation will rise in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes in this region or that, and plagues and famines, and sites of terror, and great portents from heaven. Before all this men will be laying hands on you and persecuting you. They will give you up to the synagogues, into prison, and drag you into the presence of kings and governors on my account. That will be your opportunity for making the truth known.
- 8:05Resolve then not to prepare your manner of answering beforehand. I will give you such eloquence and such wisdom as all your adversaries shall not be able to withstand or to compute. You will be given up by parents and brethren and kinsmen and friends and some of you will be put to death. All the world will be hating you because you bear my name. And yet no hair of your head shall perish.
- 8:42It is by endurance that you will secure possession of your souls. The offertory. How wonderful is God and his saints. The God of Israel will give his people strength and courage. Blessed be God.
- 9:06The secret. Give heed, o Lord, to our entreaties in this commemoration of thy saints so that we who have put no trust in our own right doing may be helped by the merits of those who have won thy favor. A commemoration of Saints Euphemia, Lucy, and Geminianus. Look favorably, O Lord, upon thy people's offerings and give us cause to rejoice in the protection of the saints whose feast thou art permitting us to keep, through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 10:02The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right in for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God. Through whom the angels praise thy majesty. The dominions worship it. The power stand in awe.
- 10:28The heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.
- 11:01Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Men saw only the pains they endured. God all the while did but test them.
- 11:23His gold tried in the crucible. His burnt sacrifice graciously accepted. The post communion. Let us pray. We, whom this holy rite has filled with the bread of life, pray, O Lord, that we may be suckered by the prayers of those whose festival we are keeping.
- 11:52A commemoration of saints Euphemia, Lucy, and Geminianus. O Lord, hear and heed our prayers. May the help of thy martyrs, saints Euphemia, Lucy, and Geminianus, whose festival we are celebrating, bring us unfailing comfort through our Lord Jesus Christ thy son who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost.
- 12:39Amen. Saint Cornelius, pray for us. Saint Cyprian, pray for us. Saint Euphemia, pray for us. Saint Lucy, pray for us.
- 12:56Saint Geminianus, pray for us.
