- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Yukonaky Coaches Show. We're here every every
- 0:02Speaker 1: other Monday night here bears from six to seven, and
- 0:05Speaker 1: you can always join us here for dinner and a show.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I mean, that's what we're here for, right Colin Stewart's
- 0:10Speaker 1: are the sid helps with the interviews that you're gonna
- 0:12Speaker 1: hear a little later on. And the coach Cavs is
- 0:15Speaker 1: with us here. Let's see, we talked about Hudson shandor
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't say enough about what Tattle, Ryan Tadtle, Tristan Fraser,
- 0:23Speaker 1: Jake Percival. You know, Chuck Kate used to have the
- 0:25Speaker 1: old term with like guys like Dean Evison and Dave
- 0:27Speaker 1: Tippett and Stu Gavin and the heyday of the whale
- 0:32Speaker 1: foot Soldiers and they grind and they grind and they
- 0:35Speaker 1: have their speed and seven shorthanded goals that leads yeah
- 0:41Speaker 1: him too. Oh yeah, but you need those guys. I mean,
- 0:43Speaker 1: you're just rolling four lines and you can get production
- 0:46Speaker 1: from any of them. That's the beauty of this team.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Those four juniors, you know, are a lot of the
- 0:52Speaker 2: heart and soul of the team. Tattle and Perceval and
- 0:56Speaker 2: Fraser and he slip you know, those four guys, they
- 1:01Speaker 2: just bring it every single night. And to your point, yes,
- 1:04Speaker 2: it's nice because I thought Phillips Sitar's line was our
- 1:08Speaker 2: best line at Harvard and we wound up playing them
- 1:10Speaker 2: quite a bit that night. And they're playing a really
- 1:13Speaker 2: good brand of hockey. I know that Maine was trying
- 1:16Speaker 2: to match up against them, you know, throw out one
- 1:19Speaker 2: of their top lines against them, and I didn't really
- 1:22Speaker 2: care because I think they're playing great hockey. So I'm
- 1:25Speaker 2: fine with those matchups. And like you just said, when
- 1:29Speaker 2: you have four lines playing the way we do, you
- 1:31Speaker 2: don't really worry about different matchups.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Last year, when we talked about the penalty kill, you
- 1:37Speaker 3: had said, you know, you decide before the penalty kill. Okay,
- 1:41Speaker 3: we're gonna be aggressive, We're gonna play back, and the
- 1:43Speaker 3: most important thing is that the unit knows that they're
- 1:46Speaker 3: on the same page. A correct Are we being aggressive
- 1:48Speaker 3: or we How are we structuring this? Given the speed
- 1:51Speaker 3: that you have on the penalty kill unit this year,
- 1:54Speaker 3: is it just aggressive? I mean, you know, not revealing
- 1:58Speaker 3: your tricks, but is it just about agressive every time
- 2:00Speaker 3: because of what they're capable of.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I think some of it is some of it is
- 2:10Speaker 2: the scheme, but I think some of it also is
- 2:14Speaker 2: just the them playing to their skill set. I think,
- 2:18Speaker 2: you know, using their ability when they see a break
- 2:22Speaker 2: they go because if you look at our primary penalty
- 2:27Speaker 2: killers Chandor Muldowney, he Slip, Percival, Tattle and Frasier, like,
- 2:34Speaker 2: they can all skate, you know, So if there's a turnover,
- 2:40Speaker 2: they're just using their their their skill. They can all skate,
- 2:44Speaker 2: and they're using that to their ability. And that's what's
- 2:45Speaker 2: creating because a lot of times on what you're gonna
- 2:48Speaker 2: get when you're killing a penalty, the powerplay stands still,
- 2:52Speaker 2: so when the puck turns over, you can catch them.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Are you sensing that other teams are registering this now
- 3:00Speaker 3: and that maybe the power play you're you're getting in
- 3:03Speaker 3: person is a little different against you because they realize that, hey,
- 3:08Speaker 3: this team can go the other way on.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good question. I don't know. I hope not.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I hope they keep taking us for granted. But no,
- 3:17Speaker 2: But to your point, when they that helps too, because
- 3:20Speaker 2: they get nervous and they don't want to turn the
- 3:22Speaker 2: puck over, and that takes them out of what they want.
- 3:25Speaker 1: To do well.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Like the toughest power place to defense are the ones
- 3:29Speaker 2: that are fearless and they'll make any pass and they're
- 3:32Speaker 2: not afraid to make certain plays. And when you can
- 3:35Speaker 2: get a power play to the point where they're second
- 3:38Speaker 2: guessing and questioning whether they should make a play, then
- 3:42Speaker 2: that's a win for the penalty kill.
- 3:44Speaker 1: By the way, in case the listeners didn't tear this,
- 3:47Speaker 1: Joy Muldowney was named Hockey East Player of the Week.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Shocks of shocks there and last week was Hotey. There
- 3:52Speaker 1: was an injury in the game on Saturday night. You
- 3:54Speaker 1: think Guardiolud took a hit from Ross Mitten, who's got
- 3:57Speaker 1: a one game suspension because of the hit. It led
- 3:59Speaker 1: to a five. I've been at major penalty and that's
- 4:02Speaker 1: the goal of the power play scored six on four
- 4:04Speaker 1: when you pulled the goalie to tie the game at two.
- 4:07Speaker 1: How is Ethan doing after that hit? Thankfully? And when
- 4:09Speaker 1: I saw it, the good news is at least his
- 4:11Speaker 1: legs were moving, so you knew it was I mean,
- 4:13Speaker 1: it was bad, but when you saw the movement and
- 4:15Speaker 1: his legs, you can tell, okay, maybe a concussion, but
- 4:19Speaker 1: nothing worse than that. Because that was a pretty nasty.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Glad you felt that way, because I didn't.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And on the bench.
- 4:26Speaker 2: It reminded me of Ruslan's hit at Quinnipilk a little bit.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Yes, I will never forget.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I will never forget.
- 4:32Speaker 2: But it was because he wasn't moving at first, and
- 4:35Speaker 2: then he was just like twitching his legs. So it
- 4:38Speaker 2: was scary situation. But thank god, he's doing much better.
- 4:46Speaker 2: You know, his concussion has kind of subsided, or the
- 4:50Speaker 2: worst effects of it have. He's going to have a
- 4:52Speaker 2: little bit of an upper body injury, but it shouldn't
- 4:55Speaker 2: keep him out too long.
- 4:57Speaker 3: When you look ahead to Okay, so obviously not going
- 4:59Speaker 3: to be available to weekend. Right, who fills in and
- 5:03Speaker 3: kind of plugs some of those gaps if it's not
- 5:05Speaker 3: one guy or.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Multiple, Yeah, I think we'll figure that out. I think
- 5:07Speaker 2: Hugh Larkin's coming back this week, so that'll help certainly
- 5:11Speaker 2: with him coming back. But we'll figure that out this week.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I actually haven't even you know, we're going to practice
- 5:18Speaker 2: tomorrow and we'll probably tinker with a few things lines
- 5:22Speaker 2: wise and see what happens.
- 5:24Speaker 1: What about your decombinations, you really haven't had a tinker
- 5:26Speaker 1: with that too much this year, have.
- 5:27Speaker 2: You No, they're playing pretty well. I think, you know,
- 5:31Speaker 2: I think Nick Carabin had a great game on Saturday night,
- 5:34Speaker 2: and Viking played really well Friday night, and Kai and
- 5:37Speaker 2: Trey have been solid, and Johnny Spetts has been solid
- 5:41Speaker 2: back there. And Masinio, who you have on tonight, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 2: he might be our best two way defenseman. He's he's
- 5:48Speaker 2: very very good defensively and he's outstanding skater. But his
- 5:54Speaker 2: offense I don't think he gets enough credit for it
- 5:57Speaker 2: because he's he's got some offensive up side and he
- 6:01Speaker 2: scored this year against PC, but he can chip in
- 6:04Speaker 2: offensively as well.
- 6:06Speaker 1: One thing I've noticed too from Tom the last three years,
- 6:08Speaker 1: he's either led or been among your leaders. And plus
- 6:11Speaker 1: minus uh huh.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Well, let's just and the plus minus stat is a
- 6:16Speaker 2: little you know, it can be skewed at times, but
- 6:19Speaker 2: when you consistently the one thing about that stat is
- 6:23Speaker 2: you can you could be minus three in a game
- 6:25Speaker 2: and not have any effect like you were it wasn't
- 6:28Speaker 2: your fault that you were on the ice for three goals.
- 6:31Speaker 2: So that can happen at times. But when you see
- 6:34Speaker 2: trends in that stat, then it usually tells you something
- 6:37Speaker 2: and the fact that he's been plus for three years
- 6:40Speaker 2: tells you something.
- 6:41Speaker 3: I mean, he's plus thirty five in about eighty career games, right,
- 6:45Speaker 3: I mean that's pretty to ignore.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah, and he leads a team in block shots too,
- 6:50Speaker 1: does he? Yeah? By one. Yeahypetcy has thirty three, Medio
- 6:54Speaker 1: has thirty four.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Well, John's been traditionally a really good shot blocker. He is.
- 6:58Speaker 2: He takes up a lot of space.
- 7:01Speaker 1: He's a stocky bigs.
- 7:02Speaker 2: He does in the lane, he gets in the lane,
- 7:05Speaker 2: and he uh, he has a he has a great
- 7:08Speaker 2: feel for one to block a shot.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I bet he hits a golf ball long way too.
- 7:12Speaker 1: He's got a big slap shot if he plays golf,
- 7:14Speaker 1: I bet he hits a long way. I don't know.
- 7:16Speaker 2: I would say probably Witcomb might hit it further.
- 7:18Speaker 1: But at six four yeah, okay, good leverage. That's fair enough.
- 7:23Speaker 3: But to me, so I feel like that's fuel for
- 7:25Speaker 3: the fire. If you go to John, I feel like
- 7:27Speaker 3: he's the type of guy if you say, hey, you're
- 7:29Speaker 3: you're not the leader in blocked shots. I feel like
- 7:31Speaker 3: he's going to go out and try and get six
- 7:33Speaker 3: or seven against the.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I don't know, that's not really his personality. Honestly, he's
- 7:39Speaker 2: going to do he's such a student of the game. Yeah,
- 7:43Speaker 2: he's going to be a coach someday, no question about it.
- 7:46Speaker 2: And uh, he's one of those guys that takes what
- 7:50Speaker 2: the game gives him. He's never going to go out
- 7:52Speaker 2: and try to force something.
- 7:54Speaker 1: He's like Thurman months and you know you can get
- 8:00Speaker 1: for you. You know, it's like passed away before you
- 8:03Speaker 1: were born. That's true. That's true, even that effect. I
- 8:06Speaker 1: remember he and Fisk were like, you know, and he
- 8:08Speaker 1: would see Fisk would do this, and he'll get a
- 8:10Speaker 1: couple of pass balls the next day and number fifteen. Yeah, oh,
- 8:13Speaker 1: he he should be in the Hall of Fame. He's
- 8:16Speaker 1: one of those guys that. Yeah.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Him and Dwight Evans.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and we and I met Dwight this year and
- 8:22Speaker 1: met up the Hall of Fame. What a good guy
- 8:24Speaker 1: he is. He had a cannon for an arm and
- 8:26Speaker 1: right field long before.
- 8:27Speaker 2: A lot of gold gloves.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, for sure. All right, Tyler Helton, Thomas Inho
- 8:33Speaker 1: coming up next, We'll give Cab a break here on
- 8:35Speaker 1: a Hockey Coaches Show. We're live at Bear Smoke House Barbecue's,
- 8:38Speaker 1: Connecticut Ice Squeak, and we'll get into the Bobcats a
- 8:40Speaker 1: little later. Here on, Learfield to stay with us
