- 0:11SPEAKER_02: Hey everyone, welcome back to Shield Media.
- 0:14SPEAKER_02: I'm Malia Ocampo, and today we're sitting down with RCU's women's basketball head coach, Jared Ocampo.
- 0:20SPEAKER_02: We're gonna take some time today to get to know Coach outside of just being the person you see on the sidelines.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: We'll talk about his basketball background, how he got into coaching, some of the biggest moments he's experienced at RCU, and of course, what we can expect heading into another season of women's basketball for our warriors.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Coach, thanks for being here.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: Let's start simple and tell us a little bit about yourself and how basketball became such a big part of your life.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: Well, first and foremost, I just want to thank you for having me.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: I'm glad to be here and um just being able to spend some time talking about what's ahead, what's what what our program is about, and uh go from there.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: But a little bit about what um, you know, my roles and responsibilities are here at Rochester Christian University.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Um not only am I the head coach of the women's basketball program, but I also help out in the admissions department as a graduate program recruiter for our uh specifically for our Masters of Arts sport leadership program.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: Um and so, you know, just kind of balancing the two things together has has kept me busy.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Um, and um, you know, it's certainly a a place and institution that I I love to uh be at.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: Uh what made you want to become a coach?
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Well, a couple of things that kind of blend in together.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Um I didn't get to have a complete college basketball experience as a student athlete.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: My my college playing career was cut short.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: And so I got into coaching fairly young.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: I was 20, 21 when I first started coaching.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, at first it was just uh me wanting to be a part of the game and stay within the game.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: And um, a large part of me, which I didn't recognize or learn until later on, was you know, my my knack for, you know, just putting people first who are around me and and being able to help develop and grow um student athletes, per particularly in the game of basketball, um, having that ability by nature um really provided me with that vision of becoming a college basketball coach.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: When did you start coaching?
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: So it would have been 2018, heading into 2019 that that winter.
- 2:57SPEAKER_01: Um I first started off coaching a grassroots girls basketball travel program.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Um, like I said, I was about 20, 21 years old.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: And um at the time we had a group of eight eighth grade girls um who were just stepping into the travel circuit as as basketball players.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, once I stepped into that, um, I really found an appreciation for for developing young student athletes who who wanted to grow their game and develop their their attributes.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, that was my main focus at that time, and and I just fell in love with with the process.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, from there I w I had an opportunity to coach alongside my dad at Bishop High School as an assistant varsity girls coach.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: And from there it it kind of just took off.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, my love and passion for for leading on the court um has really just shaped in me into the leader that I am today.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: What brought you to become a coach at RCU?
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: So after a few years of of coaching travel basketball and and coaching at Bishofoli High School, I had an opportunity to connect with a uh uh Rochester at the time Rochester University's head coach who was actually recruiting a few of my travel basketball players.
- 4:37SPEAKER_01: And so from there I was able to develop a a relationship and connection with with that coach.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: And big shout out to Brent Witchner.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Um from there I was able to just connect with them and and kind of just get a gauge for for what it's it was like to to be a college coach.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: And uh at the spring of 22, 2021, um I had asked him, I said, listen, you know, I see myself coaching in college long term.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: Um I want to get my feet wet.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Is there anything that I can do to to help or to support the women's basketball program at Rochester University?
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Um and he brought me on board as a volunteer assistant coach.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: And you know, at that at that time I was very fortunate to to learn from Brent Coach Brent and um really just get a feel for what it was like to be a a college basketball coach.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: As you mentioned, you were on the staff in 2022 to 23 as an assistant coach uh when the team won the WAC championship.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: Can you tell us what that was like for you?
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was a a really cool experience.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Um there were a lot of really good players on that on that team um which really selfishly helped me become a better leader, better coach.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: Um you know, just developing those relationships with them on and off the court.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: I think you know, I I learned that that that's an important factor when when, you know, being in this industry is having those relationships with the people that you are gonna spend a lot of time with um in the process of development and growth.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Um so you know, when when we were able to conquer that whack conference tournament championship, um, I was able to see and and be a part of you know what it took to get there.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: Um and in hindsight, you know, that that shaped my mentality.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Um that shaped the the the things that I value um as a coach.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, I re I was very fortunate to to be in that position as I'm able to, you know, take away a lot of good things that came out of it um in addition to to winning a championship.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: And so um you know, kind of just translating that experience into into what I'm doing now is is essentially the the objective and and something I strive to do every single day.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: The following year you were appointed the head coach of the team.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: Your overall record during your first year was 14 and 15.
- 7:40SPEAKER_02: Your second year it went down to 10 and 19, and then last season you went twenty one and eleven with notable wins against number twenty Indiana Tech, number twenty four Carroll, and Division I University of Detroit Mercedes.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: What changes did you make to turn around your overall record within three years?
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: I don't think it was necessarily changes that I personally had to make.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: Um I had to remind myself constantly that you know the things that I was putting on the surface for our program, I initially was a big believer of it.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, as the years progressed into year two, into year three, um, I had to remind myself to just stay with it um and not jump ship.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: Um and so, you know, the success that we found in in year three, I think that's uh that's a testament to, you know, the the girls buy-in and um just the continuity that we were able to see as the relationships continue to get stronger and our knowledge and understanding of how our system was gonna um be executed, those things were a huge part of of our success.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, certainly something that we want to continue to build on top of moving forward, um, and just growing the belief within our program, the girls in it, and the staff that we have, um, knowing and and understanding that you know we are capable of doing the the unexpected, right?
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Like beating Detroit Mercy, nobody expected that.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Um, but we went into Callahan Hall and and proved everybody wrong.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: And I think that's the mentality shift that that we want to see within that process of development.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: And surely we've we've been able to see that.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, I can't be any more proud of our progression and the strides that we've made.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Um, but we're certainly not satisfied with what what we've we've done so far.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: This last season, you and your team made it back to the WAC championship, but you fell to Indiana Tech.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: What do you think that taught you and your team?
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: Like I said, I think the the belief and the growth of of that belief um is is going to, you know, not only help us push through the adversity, but also give us a baseline of our expectations and our standards.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Um and we have to we have to be aware that, you know, being in that position where we're we're fighting for a another championship, that's a that's a privilege.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: And not everybody gets to have that opportunity.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: And so we got to take ownership of that and and and really put that in the back of our minds as we progress forward.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: Um and and having having the knowledge of what it takes to get there, um, I think that's very important too.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: And and you know, the more we harp on the little things, the the more that we see improvement, the more that we see growth.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: And yeah, like I said, you know, that that that feat, that opportunity that we were presented with, you know, that's that has become the baseline for us.
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: And, you know, anything short of that is gonna be uh it's gonna be tough to to see.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: And so um we just gotta continue to build on top of that and and really tell ourselves, remind ourselves that the more that we believe in our capabilities, the more good things that are gonna happen.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: You also punched a ticket to the NAIA national tournament last year.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: What was that experience?
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: So my first two years as an assistant coach, uh, we actually made it to the NAA not NAIA national tournament both years.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: And you know, both of those years were incredible experiences.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: We um unfortunately lost in the first round of the national tournament both years.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: Um so that alone was was for me a a huge, huge step into the right direction in my in my professional development career.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: Um and then making it to the back to the national tournament and and leading our program back to where it was as a head coach um just really really meant a lot to me.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, it it like I said, it it's a privilege to be in that position.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, having that under our belt, having that experience for our girls, um, you know, that just truly means a lot to me.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: And like I said, we're gonna utilize that opportunity and experience um as our baseline and and you know, remind ourselves like this is where we want to be every single year and have that opportunity to to play for WAC championships, have an opportunity to to get past the first round of the national tournament, get to the sweet 16 and Elite Eight, and you know, hopefully eventually play for an NAI national tournament championship.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, those experiences really do shape you as a person, as a leader.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: And and I certainly hope that it's it's shaping our our student athletes um in a way that that helps them um, you know, not only enhance their competitiveness, um, but also, you know, just their their growth as human beings as as they translate their student athlete experiences in college um into the real world.
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: So um I I like I said, it it's meant a lot to me and and you know I certainly want to get back to the uh national tournament.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: Last season you fell to Rayo Grand in the first round of the NAIA national tournament.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: You'll be seeing them again this season on October 30th.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: What do you think this game means to you and your team?
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: I think this is an incredible opportunity.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Um when Rayo and and myself had this conversation of scheduling this non-conference game for the 26-27 season.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Um, it was actually before we found out we were playing them in the um national tournament um a season ago.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: And so um that just that's just a coincidence.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: However, you know, for me, I'm I'm always looking to play the the best of the best.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: And you know, Ryo Grand has been one of the best teams in the country for a long time now.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, having them on our schedule and it it does mean a lot.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: And um I think our girls are gonna are gonna you know go into that game with with that thought in the back of their minds, like, hey, this is the team that knocked us out in the national tournament.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: And so um we're gonna utilize you know that experience a season ago as fuel, as motivation, as drive to to try and avenge that loss.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, I'm certainly looking forward to it.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: Uh Ryo's got a first year head coach and Coach Brandon Bias.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: And so um consider him one of my good friends in this industry.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: And you know, I'm I'm just really looking forward to competing with him and his team.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: You were named WAC coach of the year last season.
- 15:35SPEAKER_02: Was that something you ever expected to receive?
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: And what did it mean to you personally?
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Certainly not.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: No, it it's it's never expected for me to achieve individual goals and accolades.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: Um, so it did catch me by surprise.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Um, however, you know, I'm I feel very fortunate to have had that feat and accolade under my belt.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's all uh a testament to you know my staff who who comes in and works and um you know provides the girls with that additional support.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, they provide me with support in executing my vision.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: Um and and the girls buying into the system, you know, not being discouraged after a 10-win season.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, in this day and age, it's easy to put your head down when things don't go your way.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, our girls did the complete opposite.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: They they picked themselves back up um and they carried a lot of the weight throughout the season.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, that that Coach of the Year award is certainly not all about me.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: It's it's more so about you know the staff that we've built and the players that we've been able to help develop within their their experience.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, it's big kudos to them, and um we're gonna continue to do what what we can and what we need to do to get back to where we were what are some things that you're excited for this upcoming season?
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Just competing with my team and and seeing the the work that we put in come to fruition.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, we we spent a lot of time in the summer um breaking down our offensive and defensive concepts.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: Um we, you know, we we've really spent a lot of time and invested a lot of time and effort in just making sure that we're not coming into the fall um starting from scratch.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Um as I alluded to earlier, one of the biggest factors to our success from last season was continuity.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: Um and we certainly want to continue the things that that we've done and learn from the mistakes that we made.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Um so I'm I'm really excited to see what the what the work uh put in in the summer, um, how that translates into this season.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: Um and ultimately just a camaraderie that that we will we're gonna have with within our team.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: Um I think that's growing and growing every single day.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: Um and there's nothing, there's no better feeling than seeing you know your girls get closer and closer with one another.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, that's that's extremely important as as you know we progress in into our our careers.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: And so uh just really looking forward to competing with with our team and and seeing those relationships continue to get stronger with one another.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: It's your first year as head coach was having more returning players incoming.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: What do you think this means for your pro coach?
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: I think it's more so about the the buy-in that the girls have had.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Um like I said, you know, in in in the landscape of college basketball, it's easy to to say, yeah, I didn't get my way this year, so I'm just gonna pick up and leave, transfer, find a different school the following year.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: And so um the thing with our group is that they they are fully committed um to one another and to our program.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: Um and so, you know, that's why you see the retention rate that we have, you know, and despite some of those girls not getting what they wanted last year, whether it be playing time or um whatever it is, um, you know, they've they've made the decision to to come back, run it back, and and continue on with the process.
- 19:49SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, just believing in the system, believing in the the the work that we put in, uh, believing in one another, um, you know, those things are very important.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: For me, um it's it's heartwarming to to see um and to to have girls who want to play for you in your program.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: And so I don't take that for granted.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: You know, I I want to make sure that I give our girls the sugar um when it's needed and when it's um warranted.
- 20:23SPEAKER_01: Um, but also I want to challenge them and push them to be better than who were they were uh yesterday, who they were last month, who they were last year.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: And so um, you know, I think that's part of the process too, and that's part of the reason why you know the girls wanted to return for another year, not just because we had a successful season, but um the things that come with it and and the progress that they've seen um, you know, as a reflection of of themselves, you know.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: So um certainly an exciting time and and we're excited to to see, like I said, what that continuity looks like this this season.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: The schedule was released a little bit ago, and you have exhibition games against two Division I programs, the University of Michigan and Oakland University.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: What would you say to someone who looks at the schedule and thinks, wait, RCU is playing Michigan?
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: I would say, yeah, we are.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're we're playing the University of Michigan.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, some people will think that I'm crazy for scheduling that game.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: Some people will look at me and say, Wow, that's a really cool opportunity.
- 21:37SPEAKER_01: But at the end of the day, um, you know, the decisions that I make when it comes to um completing our schedule, um, it it's it's all for the girls and their futures and and and not just short term but long term.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: Um I'm a big believer in you know having opportunities to play against the the best competition there.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: is.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: And you know, fortunately we have this opportunity to play teams like U of M and OU that that will not only provide us with with a an experience of a lifetime, but it it allows us to see kind of just that that competitiveness that we we admire and are very influenced to to pursue.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: And so the more you know the more competition, the better competition that we see, I think in the long run, the better we'll be off.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: And not not just in basketball, right?
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: Like we're gonna have to compete in in the real world and um you know just being able to see those things and experience those things, I think there's there's so many benefits to it.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: And so we're we're we're very excited for for those two exhibition games.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: And I think it's gonna be an incredible opportunity for us to to gain exposure, to gain experience, to get our our name out there, um, to get our school out there too.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: So and we're certainly not going to back down from any competition as you can see in in our non-conference schedule as well.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: What do you tell your players going into a game like this where they're facing a much larger program?
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah I mean there's a there's a few things that are important to to deliver um I think the first thing is just enjoying and embracing the the moment you know and and living where your feet are you know don't look back don't look forward um enjoy the moment that we're in because um it's a privilege it's a privilege to be in in these positions and so um just having an opportunity like that you know you don't want to take it for granted because not a lot of people get that opportunity you know um u of m for example they're they're a top five team in the entire country in NCA division one um coming off an elite eight season um you know those opportunities aren't aren't for everybody and and we have to remind ourselves that and so that's the first thing is is embracing you know the the opportunities that we have in front of us um living in the moment and and not looking back the second thing is you know we are we are a small university compared to teams like that right like U of M, Oakland University we're a very small university and so there's not a lot of people who who know what Rochester Christian University is.
- 24:52SPEAKER_01: And so this opportunity is going to allow us to not only expand that lens of of who we are um but also provide us with the that exposure.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: So the message that I would deliver to the girls is represent yourself represent your families and most importantly represent this university um because in in in those moments you know there's there's a lot that we can get out of it um that's much bigger than the game of basketball and so we're we're very fortunate to have those opportunities.
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: What is one goal that you have for you and your team for this new season I think growth.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: Growth is the biggest thing um you know obviously we can look at the analytics and say yeah we want to be better across the board but um you know the more we can emphasize our our growth and our development in the process the the better understanding that we'll have as to how we're gonna get there.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: How are we gonna shoot better?
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: How are we gonna uh decrease our turnovers how are we gonna increase our rebounding right those things are important when it comes to developing um and it's easier said than done.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: Like yeah we could sit here and say yeah we wanna we wanna decrease our turnovers this season by five turnovers but um you know we all know that that's not gonna happen if we don't know how we're gonna get there.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: And so we kind of have to break things down.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: We got to watch a ton of film and and really see where our decisions are impacting the game and um you know from there we'll we'll begin to see uh a decrease in in turnovers um but yeah just ultimately growth and and development within our game um and then for me too right like seeing our our upperclassmen and and specifically our seniors um they're they're about to jump out into the real world here in in about a year so um just making sure that that that those girls are are well equipped for for the reality um that way you know there there's no worries there's no concerns when they're out in their careers in their workplace um we want to be able to carry those things that we learn within our program into the real world and so um you know ultimately that's that's a goal of mine um and for the team um but yeah and and obviously we all want to win championships right um but as I said earlier it's easier said than done like we could sit here and say yeah we want to win the WAC championship we want to win the conference tournament championship we want to get far in the national tournament um but none of that's gonna happen if if we don't know how to get there and so um you know growing our belief growing our our foundation that we've built um and and relying on the the idea that you know we're all in this together you know those things are are part of the how and then we you know we we'll see we'll see that progress we'll see that development and um you know hopefully we can get there hopefully we can get to our our uh our objectives what do you want the future of this program to look like what are you trying to build here at RCU I want Rochester Christian University to be a place that people want to go to I think it's an incredible institution with uh a lot of really good leaders uh a lot of really good people and so you know for us to have an opportunity to to you know stamp our mark um that's very important to me because I want the future generations to look at our program and our university and say I want to be a part of that program I want to be a part of that university um and so you know when when we walk and talk on a daily basis we we want to make sure that it it's aligning with that objective that you know it there are people watching.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: There are people watching whether it's a future recruit whether it's a it's a parent of a future recruit um there are people who are always watching and we want to make sure we we leave a good impression to the point where you know they want to be a part of our program in our university and so uh we aim to do that on a daily basis and and we'll continue to strive to make a difference and an impact for future generations to come.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: What have you learned as a coach that you want to carry with you into the future?
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: That's a really good question.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: I think the f the first thing that comes to mind is is patience.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: Um I think patience is critical in in anything and everything that we do as human beings um not everything is gonna go our way every single day and so we have to remain patient.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: And the second thing that comes to mind is resiliency and being able to bounce back from difficult situations.
- 30:55SPEAKER_01: And so you know you kind of use that as an example in in life too, right?
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Like if if we spill our coffee this morning, how are we going to respond?
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: Is that going to ruin the rest of our day or are we going to look at it and say okay let me just clean this up and we'll go on about our day and make sure that we have a good rest of our day um you know no matter how magnified the situation is or the adversity that we face um it's important to remain patient and it's it's important to be resilient in those situations.
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: And that's how we're gonna develop ourselves you know that's how we get better as people is we we learn and understand um what and how patience impacts the things that we do on a daily basis but also the the resilience aspect of things.
