- Lucas: We’ve spent a lot of time lately looking at the institutions that held the Ottoman Empire together or tore it apart—the tax systems, the secret police, the grand viziers. But today I want to zoom in on the man who ultimately broke the mold entirely. Luna: Atatürk. Lucas: Exactly. Most people know him as the founder of the Republic, the statue in every square, the symbol of modern Turkey. But before he was a general, before he was a statesman, he was just a restless kid growing up in Salonica, which was still very much part of the Ottoman world back then. Luna: A multicultural melting pot. Lucas: It was chaotic and vibrant. There were Greeks, Jews, Turks, Bulgarians, all living in close quarters. For young Mustafa Kemal, this wasn't just geography; it was his first lesson in how fragile coexistence could be when empires start to crack under pressure. Luna: Did he feel the weight of that instability early on? Lucas: He did. His mother died when he was quite young, and that kind of early loss tends to harden a person or make them incredibly driven. He ended up staying with relatives, which forced him to adapt quickly to different social circles within the city. Luna: That sounds like a tough childhood for someone so young. Lucas: It was. But it also gave him a unique perspective. He wasn't just an observer of the empire; he was part of its demographic fabric. When he started school, he didn't just learn math and history; he learned how different communities interacted, clashed, and relied on each other. Luna: So where did his education take him next? Lucas: He moved to Monastir, which is now Bitola in North Macedonia, to attend the Monastir Military School. This was a crucial turning point because military training in the late Ottoman period wasn't just about tactics; it was deeply political. Luna: Political in what way? Lucas: The sultan, Abdülhamid II, had suspended parliament and ruled with an iron fist, but there was a growing underground movement called the Committee of Union and Progress, or CUP. They wanted constitutional government and reform, and they were recruiting heavily from these military schools. Luna: He joined them pretty quickly? Lucas: He did. Even as a student, he was involved in secret meetings. He wasn't just following orders; he was engaging with the ideas of Turkish nationalism and modernization. He read widely, often borrowing books from local libraries that were otherwise banned or restricted. Luna: Reading banned books must have been risky. Lucas: Very. If you were caught distributing prohibited literature, the consequences could be severe. But this exposure to liberal and nationalist thought shaped his entire worldview. He began to see the empire not as a divine right but as a state that needed to evolve or perish. Luna: It reminds me of how revolutions usually start in classrooms. Lucas: They almost always do. Young minds are eager for change, especially when the current system feels broken. In Monastir, he formed friendships with other future leaders who would later play key roles in the Young Turk Revolution and the subsequent wars. Luna: Like Enver Pasha? Lucas: Yes, though their paths diverged later. Enver became more radical and militaristic, while Mustafa Kemal retained a pragmatic streak. That pragmatism would become his signature trait as he navigated the collapse of the empire during World War One. Luna: I love how you can trace their differences back to school days. Lucas: It’s fascinating when you look at the archives. You can see how their debates in dormitories evolved into national policies decades later. The seeds of Kemalism were definitely planted in those halls. Luna: What exactly is Kemalism in that context? Lucas: At its core, it was about secularism, nationalism, and modernization. He wanted a state that served its citizens, not a religion or a dynasty. This idea was revolutionary for a region that had been ruled by caliphates and sultans for centuries. Luna: A complete break from tradition. Lucas: Precisely. And it wasn't easy. He had to fight wars, negotiate treaties, and reshape society from scratch. But the foundation was laid long before he ever wore a general's uniform. Luna: It really shows the power of education. Lucas: Absolutely. It’s a reminder that history isn't just made by kings and generals; it’s made by students, teachers, and anyone willing to question the status quo. Luna: I’m curious if he kept any journals from those years. Lucas: Some fragments survive, mostly letters to family. They’re surprisingly warm and reflective, showing a side of him that the stern public image often hides. He missed home, he worried about his siblings, and he dreamed of a better future. Luna: That makes him feel much more human. Lucas: It does. We tend to monumentalize historical figures, but remembering them as real people helps us understand their choices better. His humanity was his greatest strength. Luna: How did he handle the pressure of being a leader? Lucas: He leaned on discipline and routine. Whether it was military drill or studying philosophy, structure helped him manage the chaos around him. He believed that order was the prerequisite for freedom. Luna: An interesting paradox to hold onto. Lucas: It is. But for him, it worked. That blend of strict discipline and progressive ideals defined his leadership style throughout the war and into the republic. Luna: Did his teachers influence him directly? Lucas: One teacher, Ziya Gökalp, was particularly influential. Gökalp wrote extensively about Turkish culture and identity, arguing that Turkey should look to its own heritage rather than imitating Europe blindly. Luna: That sounds like a balanced approach. Lucas: It was. Mustafa Kemal took those ideas and refined them, focusing on practical application rather than just theory. He wanted results, not just rhetoric. Luna: He seems very focused. Lucas: Unwavering. That focus carried him through the darkest moments of the war, including Gallipoli, where he famously rallied his troops against overwhelming odds. Luna: Gallipoli changed everything for him. Lucas: It did. It turned him from a promising officer into a national hero. But the roots of that heroism were watered in the classrooms of Monastir. Luna: I never thought of school as a battlefield. Lucas: Ideologically, it certainly was. Every book read and every debate won was a step toward reshaping the nation. Luna: It’s amazing how small moments scale up. Lucas: They are. And that’s why digging into his early life gives us such a clearer picture of the man who stood up and said, 'No more.' Luna: A powerful ending to the story. Lucas: For sure. If you've been stepping into history with us episode by episode, covering everything from the Tulip Era to the birth of the Republic, we want to share a quick honest thing with you. Luna: Yeah? Lucas: A handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo — that's F. E. X. I. N. G. O., and that's literally what funds making this many of these without ads. Luna: It keeps the research going. Lucas: Exactly. It allows us to keep digging into these deeper stories without compromising the content. Thank you to everyone who supports us that way. Luna: Back to the history then. Lucas: Right. So after Monastir, Mustafa Kemal was sent to the Imperial General Staff College in Istanbul. Luna: The highest level of military education. Lucas: Yes. And this is where he truly sharpened his strategic mind. He wasn't just learning how to command armies; he was learning how to think like a statesman. Luna: That transition from soldier to leader is key. Lucas: It is. He understood that military victory alone wouldn't save the empire; only political reform could do that. That insight guided his actions for the rest of his life. Luna: A visionary thinker. Lucas: Undoubtedly. And it all started with a curious kid in Salonica who refused to accept the world as it was given to him. Luna: Here’s to the rebels who build something new. Lucas: To Mustafa Kemal, and to the enduring power of ideas born in youth.
