- 0:07The Cincinnati Reds faced the Oakland A's at Oakland Alameda County Coliseum for Game 3 of the 1972 World Series on October 18th.
- 0:16The A's led the best of seven series, two games to none, and this is the NBC Radio broadcast of Game 3 featuring announcers Jim Simpson and Al Michaels.

- 0:31Gil Morgan at second base. Bobby Tolan in center field.
- 0:36Johnny Bench-Catchings hitting fourth.
- 0:40Tony Perez at first base.
- 0:43Dennis Menke at third base.
- 0:47Stacey Geronimo in right field hitting seventh.
- 0:51The shortstop, Darrell Cheney.
- 0:55And the pitcher, right-hander Jack Billingham.
- 0:59For the Oakland A's, Bert Campanaris leads off at shortstop.
- 1:05Mattie Allou in right.
- 1:07Joe Rudy in left.
- 1:10Mike Epstein in first base.
- 1:13Sal Vando at third base hitting sixth.
- 1:16Right now, the governor of California, the honorable Ronald Reagan, is getting set to throw out the first ball.
- 1:21Gene Tennis will make the catch, and a wild throw by Reagan.
- 1:26Heading out towards center field over the head of center.
- 1:30George Hendrick will hit sixth.
- 1:32Hendrick in center.
- 1:35Gene Tennis will do the catching.
- 1:39Dick Green at second base.
- 1:42John Blue Moon Odom, the pitcher, he really takes the field.
- 1:45And we far 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:49Lots of people watching on the left of the ball game.
- 1:52Danfield Freeway backs up at 12th Avenue.
- 1:55And the interstate northbound backs up at the Fremont Bridge.
- 1:58Jay Cullen, KGWE Portland.
- 2:03The plate on fire tonight is Mel Steiner.
- 2:06Mike Humon is at first base.
- 2:08Bob Engel at second base.
- 2:10Phil Haller at third.
- 2:12Chris Pelletutis down the left of your line.
- 2:14Jim Connachick down the right of your line.
- 2:17And here is Tuckham, Blue Moon Odom.
- 2:19Shock toward the mound.
- 2:21Getting better, loosing up.
- 2:22Pete Rose will lead off for the Cincinnati Reds in the first inning.
- 2:26The Oakland A's on top two games to nothing.
- 2:29Game three of the 1972 World Series.
- 2:32And with a play-by-play, here is Jim Simpson.
- 2:35Alan, this time that we've had off, and in the two surprise victories,
- 2:39we say a surprise only because Oakland was the decisive underdog.
- 2:42It jumped out to the last two games to non-league.
- 2:45And the travel day we had and the day off we had because of the rainouts,
- 2:50we began to wonder, we began to wonder whether or not the Oakland Athletics,
- 2:54a young ball club in its first World Series,
- 2:57the A's would go back through history here in Oakland, in Kansas City,
- 3:01and back to Philadelphia, go all the way back to 1941, their last series appearance.
- 3:06If one of this young ball clubs, with a two games to non-league,
- 3:09will have that kind of tenacity, that kind of search for the juggler vein,
- 3:13they go ahead and put this away out here in Oakland.
- 3:16Turn it around.
- 3:18Cincinnati all year long has been a fine ball club.
- 3:21Some say if the Pittsburgh Pirates are not the best club in baseball,
- 3:24the Cincinnati Reds are.
- 3:26The Reds beat the Pirates.
- 3:28The Reds have been a very fast, aggressive, base-running ball club.
- 3:32And so if they were to get back in, and fairly two games to none as they are,
- 3:36you've got to look for that kind of baseball.
- 3:38But because of so much rain, the in-field and the out-field are both very slow.
- 3:42So there's another question for you.
- 3:44Can the Reds put together the kind of ball, aggressive baseball, they would like to?
- 3:49Will the field hold them down?
- 3:51Now John Grewmore told them, if the right-hander pitcher changes the, even on his fastball,
- 3:56and I don't mean the straight change, he'll take just that much off the fastball.
- 4:00He's got a dandy curve.
- 4:01He's got a fastball that rides in on the right-handers.
- 4:04It looks like a through ball, but it's a fastball.
- 4:06And he's got another fastball that would go in toward the left-hander.
- 4:09And also a fastball, not a slider.
- 4:12Pete Rose, the flick hitter, hit 307 on the season, steps in.
- 4:18Rose has won for a cluster walk.
- 4:21And Odom's first hit, Banderlyn on the grass, is a high fastball, ball one.
- 4:26Odom, in his last three shots, going back to the regular season,
- 4:29over 19 innings, there's only about one unearned run, eight hits.
- 4:33And in the playoff, he defeated Detroit 5-0 and 2-1.
- 4:37Ready for the second pitch to Rose, this is another high fastball,
- 4:41and Odom is a thinking fastball-type pitcher.
- 4:44But he's showing his nerve again.
- 4:46Those of you who have followed the playoff, remember that at the end of five innings in Detroit,
- 4:50in the final game, Odom took himself out.
- 4:53He became nauseous with the tension.
- 4:55He's thrown two fastballs to the crowd thinking Rose.
- 4:58Tennis is down low, and there's the pitch.
- 5:01It's got to be outside cover.
- 5:02That's a fastball that drives in on the right-hander and rolls away from the left-hander to Rose.
- 5:07On deck is Joe Morgan.
- 5:10Bander remains in on the grass at third.
- 5:14Outfield plays a round on the left.
- 5:17Low-pitched with three balls, one strike.
- 5:19Now Odom pitches from behind a lot.
- 5:22That is, he is down three and one, and three and two.
- 5:26A Hall of Famer by the name of Early Wind used to like to pitch from behind,
- 5:29thinking that everybody's getting fastballed, and that's when he comes in with a breaking pitch.
- 5:33And as him hits the pitch, he wants him to hit.
- 5:36He had one.
- 5:37Odom right-back, round ball to the foul of the third baseline, and Bander picks it up.
- 5:42They mention that Rose has one great puck to walk.
- 5:45Rose, Morgan, and Coler, in 25-times at bat, have been on base five-times, twice by walk,
- 5:52once on an error, and only twice by base hit.
- 5:57As Al Michael said, Johnny Bentz, leader in RBIs and home runs, has come up six times
- 6:03in great appearances with nobody on his red-off.
- 6:06The three-two pitch ready, and back with the pitch, Coler.
- 6:14Well, there's Blue Moon Odom loving to pitch from behind, and he got Rose looking for a pitch
- 6:19that he didn't get.
- 6:21He got a fastball right down the middle.
- 6:23Joe Morgan shifts in.
- 6:25And the Cincinnati Reds say that if Johnny Bentz is not the most valuable player in the
- 6:29National League, this fella certainly should be.
- 6:31Morgan hit.992 on the year, left the majors with 115 walks and 122 runs.
- 6:38But he is 0-for-6, plus the walk, and reaching on an error in the World Series.
- 6:43And he is 0-for-11 in his last three games.
- 6:46Fastball kept him in the outside corner.
- 6:48Morgan, like Coler, in the follow, he's waiting on Jeff Alexander.
- 6:52Now, score one out top of the first, and just begun the third game of the World Series in
- 6:56no-suit.
- 6:57We see no rain anywhere around.
- 7:00Odom working fast now, getting a little confidence off.
- 7:02He takes his up-high.
- 7:04And it's one ball, one strike to Morgan.
- 7:07Morgan came over that trade from Houston, which sent Lee May and Tommy Helms, among others,
- 7:13to Houston and brought Morgan and Dillingham to nice pictures among over here.
- 7:18High and away, and far outside, Gene Kenneth to catch the catch-up, and Odom wants to do
- 7:24baseball, two balls, one strike.
- 7:26Now, Kennedy to first base, victory down to second.
- 7:29Merck Campanera to shortstop.
- 7:31Sal Bando to third base.
- 7:32And your Rudy in left, George Hendricks, 23 years old today, out on center field.
- 7:37Maddie Lewitt-Wrightfield and Gene Kenneth, the one-a-ball game with two home runs behind
- 7:41the plate.
- 7:42Odom ready on the 2-1 pitch.
- 7:44The fast ball is too high, and it's three balls and one strike.
- 7:49Odom went three and one on Rose, and then keeps the two called strikes.
- 7:53Well, check that foul ball up the third base line to strike two, and then to call strike three.
- 7:59Three and one pitch comes in swinging the net on a thinking fast ball.
- 8:04They've all two strikes to Morgan.
- 8:08The Reds remember if they ever get back into this series, and they feel they can, must
- 8:12be Rose, Morgan, and Odom on base.
- 8:18Odom is standing on deck swinging the bat.
- 8:23The three and two, Bando backs up a bit of third base.
- 8:25Swing and a miss on another thinking pitch.
- 8:28And Odom has struck out the first two.
- 8:32I think Jimmy could probably count on one hand the number of times this season that Rose
- 8:37and Morgan have struck out back-to-back.
- 8:41That'll bring up Bobby Tolan.
- 8:42A lot of things said, and it always is, around an all-star game or a world series about the
- 8:47superiority or the lack of superiority of the National League.
- 8:51They talk about either league.
- 8:53And the American Lakers, up two games to none, and taking full cognizance of the fact that
- 8:58Rose, Morgan, and Tolan are fine ball players, just say they're going against the pitching
- 9:02staff the likes of which they never saw throughout the National League season.
- 9:07That's just an argument going on.
- 9:08Tolan hits the first pitch, Johnson up the middle, hop off.
- 9:12Odom has it, crosses it out, and it's an easy one-two-three inning for Blue Moon Odom and
- 9:18the Oakland A's.
- 9:19The Golden Lots to the first.
- 9:21There's no score.
- 9:26Hello.
- 9:27Hello, Mr. Gilbert.
- 9:28This is Ms. Ramsey.
- 9:29I'm conducting a survey.
- 9:31Would you mind answering a few questions about air travel?
- 9:34I'd be glad to.
- 9:35That airline can fund your reservation in three seconds.
- 9:39Delta.
- 9:40And which airline delivers your bags in an average of seven minutes after you land?
- 9:44Delta.
- 9:45Can you name an airline that flies the wide-ride jet to 747 and soon the DC-10?
- 9:52Delta.
- 9:53That airline is known as the airline run by professionals.
- 9:56Delta.
- 9:57Which airline offers total service?
- 10:00Delta.
- 10:01Does the airline you fly most often accept the American Express money card and does it
- 10:06let you extend payment for airfare on the American Express money card sign and fly
- 10:11sign?
- 10:12Delta does.
- 10:13Which airline do you plan to fly on your next trip?
- 10:17Would you like to take a guess?
- 10:19Delta does.
- 10:31Now, Michael is with Gil Simpson back at the Oakland Coliseum.
- 10:34The Reds did not score in the first.
- 10:36The A's will come up.
- 10:37Jack Sillingham working for the Reds.
- 10:40Tinkerball pitcher, slider, good control, came over in the deal from Newton, led the staff
- 10:46in almost every department this season simply because he was just about the only man to
- 10:50be in the rotation all season long.
- 10:52Gary Nolan had his problems and was in and out.
- 10:54Don Gullick was six-goal out.
- 10:56But Sillingham started almost every five days.
- 10:59There was a brief time at the beginning of the year when he resigned of the rotation.
- 11:02He started more games than any other Reds 31.
- 11:05He was 12 and 12 with a 3-1 ADRA.
- 11:07Here's Jeff.
- 11:08All right, now, Kampy Kampenow leads it off against the right-hander, Sillingham.
- 11:13Three-quarter motion, it's flying south on the right-field line and is well dropped by
- 11:18one of the Cincinnati Bullpen men who did not have a glove on.
- 11:21Strike one to Kampenow.
- 11:23Kampenow, for those of you listening around the world that may not have heard,
- 11:26descended for the playoffs.
- 11:27They're throwing a bat at the first pitch to Laren LaGrove.
- 11:30He's allowed to play again in the 4-0 series.
- 11:33He'll be suspended for the first week of next year as further punitive.
- 11:37No score, breaking pitch.
- 11:39It's curveball for him by Sillingham and he's playing it in this, it's a strike two.
- 11:430-1 to Kampenow, it's Matty Allou on deck.
- 11:46No score, last for the first, the third game, Oakland won the first two in the year, the
- 11:5169th World Series.
- 11:53Sillingham takes it all, 6-4, comes back with a breaking pitch and Kampenow strikes out 3.
- 11:58Now both pitches shut off the strikeouts, but for Sillingham, it only took him three pitches.
- 12:03Matty Allou has been around the national league for a long while, 1-7 best of five.
- 12:08He has walked and stolen a base and of course came over to the Oakland A's from the St.
- 12:14Louis Cardinals late in the season, so he has seen Jack Sillingham a lot.
- 12:18Matty Allou is a fastball pitcher, so we would look for the breaking ball from Sillingham
- 12:22to Matty Allou, left-handed batter.
- 12:26Sillingham looks down to Johnny Ventsen, catches it for the side.
- 12:30Allou waits.
- 12:32Sillingham ready.
- 12:34Throw's a fastball, but it's too low.
- 12:36Tony Perez at first base, Joe Morgan the second baseman, Darrell Ganius shortstop,
- 12:41Dennis Menke at third, Steve Rose out on left, Bobby Holden in center, Cesar Geronimo in
- 12:46right, Banks has just flashed his sign to Sillingham, is right back with a breaking
- 12:50curve that stays outside and low.
- 12:522-0 now.
- 12:54Matty Allou.
- 12:56Dennis Menke in on the grass at third, whereas in Cincinnati, it is almost fully
- 13:00carpeted, artificially so here at the regulation baseball field, nothing but green and wet
- 13:06and soggy grass as a result of 10 days of rain.
- 13:09Fastball and Allou's swinging and misses.
- 13:11Sillingham one strike.
- 13:14On deck is Joe Rudy.
- 13:23Sillingham set again and ready to throw, throws a fastball and Allou swings and misses
- 13:27again.
- 13:28C-ball two strikes.
- 13:30As we came in today in Sallio, the mule mascot of the ultimate of things roided around and
- 13:35a helicopter was hovering over the field to dry it out.
- 13:38Someone said, where have you ever been to a World Series?
- 13:40In the newspaper, it's in a helicopter, copter and a mule.
- 13:44Answer nowhere.
- 13:45Changes on this one and Allou just gets a little piece of it and fouls it off behind the
- 13:49catcher, Johnny Banks.
- 13:50C-ball two strikes.
- 13:52Sillingham took a lot off that pitch.
- 13:57He is well rested.
- 13:58Last pitch on our show, the eighth, got 10 days ago.
- 14:01Rose, Logan and Solomon went down in order.
- 14:03Sillingham's trying to do the same thing, fastball outside, to the top three of Oakland.
- 14:09Now, Sillingham, who's got Cappner swinging on three pitches, has gone the full count to
- 14:14Mattie Allou.
- 14:15Three balls, two strikes, comes back and throws him the fastball.
- 14:18Cappner came with short stuff up with his toes on the first and has Allou by five at
- 14:27six steps.
- 14:28That will bring up Joe Rudy.
- 14:30Glad the American Legion hits this year with 181 and a home run that won a ball game on
- 14:38Sunday afternoon and also made a superb test on a line drive hit by Dennis McGee in the
- 14:43last of the ninth of that second game that saved a possible tie and a possible win by
- 14:49Cincinnati.
- 14:50It's turned it right around and it's an Oakland home leading two games tonight.
- 14:54Rudy with a closed pass, right-handed batter, and he gets the breaking pitch on the outside
- 14:59corner or strike one.
- 15:01Two outs in the Oakland first.
- 15:06Sillingham has a three-quarter motion.
- 15:08Kind of cuts that fastball across the plate, trying to get that outside corner.
- 15:13Rudy stepped out for the moment.
- 15:15Cappner struck out swinging.
- 15:16Allou has run about and Rudy standing in with a one-ball, one-strike count.
- 15:20Just coming off that place he's hitting.
- 15:22He swings him making just one ball, two strikes.
- 15:25Alderman Sillingham getting off to impressive size.
- 15:30They very well could be nervous if they don't look it.
- 15:33He'll throw it.
- 15:37He's got the ball around the plate.
- 15:39Back and ready with the fastball right down the middle, and Rudy is called out on strikes.
- 15:43And Sillingham took out two of the first three he met as Jib Blue moved out of them.
- 15:47But the end of one.
- 15:48It is Cincinnati nothing, Oakland nothing.
- 15:51Hi, I'm Johnny Bench for Ankle Windshield Wipers.
- 15:54You know a good baseball manager realizes just when to make a change in order to be a
- 15:58winner.
- 15:59It's the same thing with windshield wiper blades.
- 16:01When they're streaking and burring or driving, you've got more to lose than a ballgame.
- 16:06Just send those streakers to the showers and replace them with a new pair of Ankle Wiper
- 16:10Blades.
- 16:11They're in the big yellow Ankle cabinet you see in service stations everywhere.
- 16:15And don't settle for anything less.
- 16:17Get the big league jobs.
- 16:19Ankle Wiper Blades by Anderson.
- 16:21One of the most important parts of every new car is made of paper, the owner's manual.
- 16:28This year the owner's manual for almost all the new cars are recommending a low octane
- 16:33gasoline like Gulf Tain.
- 16:36What they don't tell you is that Gulf Tain costs even less than Gulf Regular.
- 16:40And it has the performance additive package you'd expect from Gulf.
- 16:45Check your owner's manual and try a tank full of Gulf Tain.
- 16:49A low cost gasoline for a new car.
- 16:55The doors are closed at second inning.
- 17:04Now you have to wonder about the time of day and the effect it is having.
- 17:08The lights are on but they have taken very little effect and it's no secret that it's
- 17:12probably harder to hit at this time of day than at any other time.
- 17:17The players don't like to come up.
- 17:19Everybody except the pitchers that is.
- 17:21And certainly the first inning was the pitchers.
- 17:24Johnny Bench will lead it off for the seventh time and nine world tours at that to 1972
- 17:29as the leadoff man.
- 17:31They've kept the men in front of them from getting on base.
- 17:33And there's a fastball up high from Odom.
- 17:39Bench has had three hits.
- 17:40He's walked twice and scored two of the three runs that the Reds have scored in the first
- 17:45two games.
- 17:46Odom ready again with a one ball one strike hit.
- 17:48He's down low and away and dug out of the dirt by Dean Sender-Sicekki.
- 17:53The last six games of that extends back to that great playoff series, Cincinnati-Edwards
- 17:58and Pittsburgh-Pierce.
- 18:00The last six games, Johnny Bench is hitting at a 429-foot.
- 18:06Odom's tearing in.
- 18:07Jeff Bench 2-0.
- 18:10Back and throws and Bench fouls it off to the right and it's more of a dugout and bounds
- 18:15off the dugout roof from the Cincinnati Reds down the first base line and back up to the
- 18:19three.
- 18:24Two balls, one strike.
- 18:25Bench led the Baltimore Ligon home runs with 40.
- 18:26RBI is 125.
- 18:27He's only twice come to bat in this series with a man on base.
- 18:31Two balls, one strike.
- 18:32No score.
- 18:33Odom back and throws.
- 18:34Ground ball.
- 18:35Fourth third base.
- 18:36Bando there.
- 18:37Long throw and has him by 20-32.
- 18:44Odom has retired to first form and he is safe and that brings up Tony Perez.
- 18:49Perez has had a pretty good series and Perez is intimidated.
- 18:52That's his center and finally what about the demise of unearned, the last of the ninth
- 18:56of the game, second game.
- 18:58Perez is hitting very well.
- 18:59Four for seven.
- 19:001970.
- 19:01He had one hit in 18 times at that.
- 19:021972 in the World Series.
- 19:03Four for seven.
- 19:04Odom throws and the breaking ball.
- 19:05He stays inside off the ball.
- 19:14Odom throws a lot of pitches and walks a lot of men.
- 19:17Another day if you have a two to one ratio of strikes out over walks, that's good.
- 19:22Odom to 115 and lost.
- 19:23Here's a pitch back.
- 19:24Fast ball to low.
- 19:25Odom thought he had it.
- 19:26But it's two and O.
- 19:27Odom struck out 86-50.
- 19:28But walks 87.
- 19:35Walks about four or more men per ball.
- 19:42Perez a big right handed hitter.
- 19:43Rates for the two and O pitch.
- 19:44Odom has to come in with it with his fast ball down low again and it's three and O.
- 19:45On the shelf is Dennis MacKenzie.
- 19:46Odom taking the shot.
- 19:47Here he is in the G center.
- 19:59He gets two home runs in this game.
- 20:08Odom ready and he's taking all the well-prepared strikes.
- 20:09Three balls, one strike.
- 20:10Well apparently the open age will not start white or blue.
- 20:11Last year's most rival player and tri-young award winner.
- 20:12But he will be in the bullpen and available whenever the age needs him.
- 20:18Three and one and there's a swing strike.
- 20:20Or three balls, two strikes.
- 20:22As we said Odom will take something off this fast ball.
- 20:27Not a straight change up.
- 20:28In other words not a very slow pitch.
- 20:29But just a little bit slower than the previous fast ball.
- 20:30And that will have the hitters out in front of the pitch as well.
- 20:31Back to three and two and there's a drive out to left field.
- 20:32Joe Rudy drives it in.
- 20:33And Odom is back to three and two.
- 20:34And that ball doesn't carry too well here.
- 20:46And Rudy started back and had to come well in.
- 20:55He did.
- 20:56Perez had a big cut at the ball.
- 20:57I think he broke his bat.
- 20:58And Rudy started back and almost got caught going the other way.
- 20:59So Perez lies out and there's a little bit of a play.
- 21:00And Odom is rolling along a couple of the strikeouts.
- 21:05He retires five and Odom is facing Menke now.
- 21:08Menke hits the first pitch.
- 21:09It's foul.
- 21:10Backhanded by Bando and back at third base.
- 21:11Menke is 0-7 close to the wall.
- 21:12But part of that 0-7 is due to Joe Rudy on the left field in the ninth inning of the
- 21:13second game when he robbed him of an extra base hit.
- 21:14Dennis Moody is in the bullpen.
- 21:15And he's going to be in the bullpen.
- 21:16And he's going to be in the bullpen.
- 21:17And it's going to be a little bit of a play.
- 21:18And Odom is going to be in the bullpen.
- 21:19And he's going to be in the bullpen.
- 21:20And he's going to be in the bullpen.
- 21:21And he's going to be in the bullpen.
- 21:22And it's one ball, one strike.
- 21:31Dennis Menke at the top of the second.
- 21:38Game three of the World Series.
- 21:39There is no score.
- 21:40In fact, there hasn't been a base run.
- 21:41Odom back.
- 21:42And there's one up the middle.
- 21:43And chasing it is Green.
- 21:44It's over to Outstretched Club.
- 21:45Dogging is Hendrick.
- 21:52And taking the wide turn is Menke.
- 21:53And the ball goes into the second base.
- 21:54And Menke retreats to first.
- 21:55That's the first base hit.
- 21:56First base run of the ball game.
- 21:57You could see the way that he was dying on the grass once he got to the outfield.
- 21:58The ball had broken that looper in the center field.
- 21:59But still, Hendrick came on.
- 22:00And he had just seen.
- 22:01And it was Green who went out to get it.
- 22:02As the ball just died.
- 22:03It's muddy and soggy in the outfield.
- 22:04And that's the case in just about all of the open field.
- 22:05And it's a great game.
- 22:06And it's a great game.
- 22:07And it's a great game.
- 22:08And it's a great game.
- 22:09And it's a great game.
- 22:10And it's a great game.
- 22:11But dementation happens obviously every other Thursday.
- 22:15He's on the defensive.
- 22:17And that's the case in just about all of the open crowds.
- 22:25I think the real bad spot for him.
- 22:27And we'll see it tonight at third base and first base.
- 22:34He has to go over toward the dugout.
- 22:37They're double their slip and fall down.
- 22:39Not a threat to go. With Cedaw and the top of the second, no score, and Geronimo the left hander's batter out.
- 22:46And they're playing Geronimo not to pull the ball at all, although the ball that he pulled down to Higgin at first base was sharply pulled in the ninth inning of that second game.
- 22:55The opposite of swinging him around to the left. Mando's in on the grass at third base.
- 22:59Manke with the leadoff, he is not being held, and now he's going down ball, green at second base, comes up with it, side-on to the first base in the round of the inning. Manke is running on the fifth.
- 23:09Runs one hit, no errors, and Manke is left running between first and second base. He's over the last of the second inning.
- 23:15Four remain, Cincinnati nothing, Oakland nothing.
- 23:19It's a pretty interesting thing how that Gillette track two razor works. It has two blades, and they work like this.
- 23:26The first blade comes along and cuts into a whisker and lifts it part way out of its socket.
- 23:31Now before that little cutter-off whisker can snap all the way back, the second blade comes along and can cut the whisker again, even shorter.
- 23:41Now of course there's just no way a one-blade razor can do that. That's the track two razor. Gillette made it one blade better.
- 23:50Marty Schmidt with it.
- 23:52Marty Schmidt the dry left.
- 23:55Mike Bufolco with it.
- 23:57I don't believe it.
- 23:58Mike Bufolco the dry left.
- 24:00I believe it.
- 24:01People do seem to notice an improvement when a guy switches to the dry look, the aerosol hair control from Gillette.
- 24:07You should try it if you haven't already. Comes regular or extra-hold?
- 24:11Yola Marka with it.
- 24:13With it.
- 24:14Yola Marka the dry left.
- 24:16Fantastic.
- 24:18The dry look from Gillette.
- 24:20Now Michael's with Jim Simpson at the open Tanness Inn. Game number three of the 1972 World Series. No score.
- 24:32One hit in the game, a second-hitting single by Dennis Sentees. Bottom of the second. Mike Epstein the leadoff for Oakland. Here's Jeff.
- 24:39Epstein 0 for 5. Last three ball games he's been 0 for 8. He has run a walk. He did hit the ball very hard in the first game.
- 24:48Geronimo made a fine catch on him near the wall in right field at Cincinnati. Epstein hit 26 home runs during the regular season to lead the Cleveland home run.
- 24:58Billingham the right-hander ready. Epstein is the left-hander batter. Takes outside with a fast ball. Ball 1. Reggie Jackson of course is out.
- 25:05Rolled a hamstring muscle in the sweat. Epstein has been moved up from the number 5 to number 4.
- 25:10Batting spot. Curve ball by Billingham misses and it is 2-0. And Mike it is reported, was reported in the newspapers, there's been an argument with his manager Dick Williams about being lifted in the second game.
- 25:22But he's back and shorting. Takes a break and dips down low. And Billingham is 3-0.
- 25:27Another Billingham hit that's been wild high. It's all just been low and out of the track zone. 3-0. He's a very fast worker. Comes back and now misses high and away on 4-6. He's walked up 2.
- 25:44First place runner for the A's in this nothing-nothing game. And Sal Bando, the team captain, won for 8 on the year. He had 16 game-winning RBIs during the regular season but as of late Sal thinks haven't been doing that well.
- 26:005 singles. And has last 35 times at bat and has committed 143 over the last 9 games. Bando, like so many others, a freak at it. Right hander that is. Flows around the bunk.
- 26:14Bunk before coming in at first base. Coming in goes to second base and there's a man there back to first base at first base.
- 26:20The sacrifice bunk does not work and on the fielder's choice Bando reaches first base. Neither Epstein nor Bando can be called mad men. Epstein, a big man running in that slow footing, was an easy out at second base.
- 26:40That'll bring up George Hendricks. Hendricks the center fielder and in the lineup with Reggie Jackson Ears. Hendricks is 23 years old today. Right hander batter, 1-6 in the series. He's walked and scored a run.
- 26:56Bick the breakies. Bick blown away. Benski digit out of the dirt. It's ball one. No runs, one hit. The Benski single. No runs, no hits. No runs, we're open with one out in the last of the second.
- 27:10Another breaking pick. This one gets the outside summer. Call by no-counter and some of the over-the-maid fans go to work on the Nice and the Gumpires.
- 27:17Three Nice and the Gumpires, three American and the Gumpires and they rotate, changing assignments every day. It goes seven games. Everybody will have worked at least one time behind home plate.
- 27:28Another breaking pitch and it is fouled behind the plate. Feet into the ground and bouncing backwards over the head of Johnny Benski. Now with his mask off retrieves it.
- 27:36Steiner wants to look at it and the umpire keeps the ball in play. One ball, two strikes to Hendricks. Hendricks, he's very little.
- 27:48Drop to regular season, but a very nonchalant young man. Matter of fact, the over-the-maid, as they call him, easy.
- 27:55Whatever it is up to George to do, he does it with a perron nonchalant. Breaking pitch, hits right away center field. Shallow Bobby Tolman coming on. Morgan going back. Morgan waves off, told him, and takes it.
- 28:08And what a deep right center field for the second out and Bando of course goes back to first base.
- 28:15Very interesting what Dick Williams has got at him. Having Bando, but not often you'll see the number five man sacrificing in this particular situation, but maybe Williams feels the way Odom's throwing, the way the Regiment are hitting, and the Turies, one run might be enough.
- 28:29That's right. They've only had three runs and one run has been enough as a margin of difference in the first two games. Gene Kenneth, two for seven and you know what the two hit for.
- 28:38Home runs for first three World Tiers, not the best game. They get the breaking pitch, but it's down low. It looks like they're swotters. And it's one ball, no strikes.
- 28:46Kenneth, Bando still can't get first base. Rez standing behind him at first base. He's not on the bag now. Well, he's still off the bag at first base. He's holding behind the bag.
- 28:57Down ball for truck top, fan is there, goes to second base for the fourth out, and Bellingham and the Reds are out of the open second. No runs, no hits, no errors, one man left. At the end of two it's all tied up since the Maddie Nothing opener level.
- 29:11Let me tell you about some products I sell very proudly. Chrysler's and Plymouth. You know why I love them? They're constantly striving to make stronger cars, safer cars, better cars that run better than any they have ever built.
- 29:29They all have something in common, too. Engineering care. It goes into every Chrysler and every Plymouth. That new midsize satellite Sebring Plus, for instance. That's some car.
- 29:43And they tell me the new Chrysler is the quietest Chrysler ever. And the new Plymouth Fury. Wow, there's a beautiful car. And part of the beauty of it is the way it fights rust and corrosion with all sorts of rust preventatives.
- 30:00See these new Chrysler's and Plymouths at your Chrysler Plymouth dealer, won't you? Chrysler Plymouth. Extra care and engineering. It makes a difference.
- 30:11We call it 30 seconds for station identification. KGW Portland, Oregon.

- 30:51Back in Oakland, Switzer to Barrow Cheney, the shortstop. 0 for 2, plus a walk in the series thus far. Batting left-handed against the right-handed.
- 31:00John Blue Moon Odom steps in to face Odom in this nothing-nothing ball game as he begins third, and Bando moves in at third.
- 31:08On the grass, Odom ready to throw. There's Ketchers-Eason. A fastball, catches Cheney at the knees. Alex Gramm with the short for Cincinnati over third base. He hasn't had too much to do over there in this series. George Sugar down at first base.
- 31:24Odom looking in.
- 31:27He throws fastball and he jammed him off the hands, and it looked like the foul ball went off the foot of Cheney, and rolled George Sugar at the first base. John is out. We're happy to say that after 10 days of rain in the San Francisco-Odom Bay Area, we understand rain is in the neighborhood, but it doesn't look like it's going to rain here.
- 31:48But all kinds of records for rainfall in the Bay Area in the month of October, going back more than 80 years. Two strikes count to Cheney, leadoff man in the third as Odom has his side.
- 32:00Right hander from Mason, Georgia, throws and misses outside and rolls. Breaking pitch down and away.
- 32:18Odom sets the throw again to Cheney who waits. Gets him the big curve, but it's high and away. And a few balls, two strikes to Cheney. Odom went 3-2 on Rose, got him looking at the third base.
- 32:31And at the forester, you know, got into 3-2 and got him on a reply to left field on which he apparently broke his back. He is behind on many of the batters. That's his pattern of pitching. Doesn't mean that he's off. Comes back with a fastball look out, changes the touchdown of the way. In by the knees, gets off the glove of Tennyson all the way back to the back side.
- 32:52He's gone 3-2 again. Third time he's gone 3-2. In the ballgame. Batteries of photography. Lining a newly installed fence just in back of home plate on either side. Well out of the field of play, but given the good shot, he changes there and changes out in front of it.
- 33:11Golden strikes out. Third strike out for Blue Moon Odom. He has a great rep across. Also he comes in from the side, recorder, over the top. Ray Shaw who's scouted open for the Reds.
- 33:27Compares him in a sense with Marichow. Doesn't have the great stuff that Juan used to have, but he's more like Marichow in the sense he can come at you from three different directions with so many different pitches. Jack Billingham, the hitter. Odom ready. Jack, that's as he throws and grounds the ball up the middle. And Odom has it and easily throws him out.
- 33:47On one hit Billingham is out. Now I didn't have a chance to say that in 218 previous major leagues at bat Billingham had 21 hits, 20 of those have been singles. Lifetime average of 096.
- 34:02Here's Pete Rose. Had a 3-2 count on him and just took a look at the third called strike sneak pass him back in the first inning. No score in the Cincinnati third. Game three, open won the first two, 3-2 and 2-1 at Cincinnati.
- 34:20After rain delay we're back in business. Van Buren on the grass again as a high off-speed pitch. Looks like he changed. Well out of the strike zone. Ball on the road.
- 34:34Pete who led the National League in hits with 198 will get on them any way he can. He'll bun his way on, he'll drag his way on and he'll slail away. Occasionally delivered a long ball. Back for the fastball but misses inside. It's 2-0 to Rose.
- 34:49Bill Morgan on deck.
- 34:55The sun now rings the upper tier in right field. Well out in the seats and there is ball three with Pete Rose and just a smidgen of the left field upper deck out of left field.
- 35:11The ball is dropping rapidly and as I said the lights are not only on but they've been on for about an hour before game time. 3-0 now to Pete Rose.
- 35:22Rose is taking or swinging away. Business is to get on base and a breaking pitch misses inside and on four pitches Rose walks and that's the first walk off Odom. Bill again also has walked one man.
- 35:36There's Joe Morgan. The win in the series is over seven. And in his last 12 at bat he failed a hit.
- 35:48One hit only in this ball game that was by Manky with two out in the second.
- 35:53Vanderlip bending over hands on knees at third. Pete Rose leads off at first base. Two out. Odom steps off to get Rose to drop back to first base.
- 36:06He's still 10 bases and 13 tries under regular years. Not the base giving prep to the Morgan or a total but still he might be going with two outs to try to get him scoring territory.
- 36:15Giving the bob. He is on his way. High pitch. Slow down to second base and over everybody. Out of the center field and Rose will continue on to third.
- 36:24Throwing error by Gene Dennis and they might have had him at second base.
- 36:29But Dennis' throw just continued well out into center field.
- 36:34And so now with a count one and all to Joe Morgan. Joe Morgan the only run of the ball game if it is to be a run is at third base.
- 36:45Nobody has gotten nearly that far. Manky reached on a single for the open A's. Epstein drew a walk. Vanderlip forced him so he was on at first base.
- 36:55That's been it for them. Now Rose has made things happen. That's the aggressive baseball that Trinko had used to.
- 37:02No second. They didn't credit for that. Goes on for third base on the throwing error by Tennis.
- 37:09The pitch to Morgan is down low and it is two at oh.
- 37:15Jim that's a red game and I think any time now the balance of this series that you see any of those first three get on are going to run.
- 37:24He's set out. Tennis might have gotten Rose. Was not that good a jump. But that became academic.
- 37:32As the ground ball towards the hole Green knocks it down. Gets up on his knees.
- 37:36Low body. First three by Dick Green. And all to him. And the A's are out of it.
- 37:41All on throw hits. One error and Rose left trying to score from third base.
- 37:46We got her last of the third Cincinnati mother. Oakland mother.
- 37:50My dear I remember when traveling to Florida with an absolute delight.
- 37:54Oh we were treated like royalty believe me. At the airport a sky cap landed the curve and kicked in our luggage.
- 38:00As we struggled to ticket counter a man in a red jacket directed us to the gate.
- 38:04And we never spent a minute waiting in line. Our jet was a wide ride 747.
- 38:10Oh my dear the seats were full of luxury and the food. Oh my god just went by the board.
- 38:17We had the most charming stewardess too. I mean truly professional.
- 38:21Oh darling the flight was all too short. And you know our luggage actually beat us to the claim barrier.
- 38:27My out trip to Florida was such a joy.
- 38:30Was that a long time ago grandma?
- 38:32Just last month my dear when grandpa took me to Miami on Delta Airlines.
- 38:36Enjoy Delta's total service on your next trip.
- 38:39Charge your Delta tickets on the American Express money card.
- 38:43You can even extend payment for your airfare on the American Express money card sign and fly plan.
- 38:49Delta is ready when you are.
- 38:55Mick Green the object of the crowd's affection will leave things off in the bottom of the third inning.
- 39:00He saved the age to run the reds had a sure run and Joe Morgan in going down to first base may have come up a bit late.
- 39:07Now he's got a red cleaner after cleaning and Morgan limping noticeably as he moves around to second base.
- 39:14Now how many times have you seen the man who has made the great play to end an inning lead off the next inning.
- 39:21Mick Green made the great play and now leaves it off.
- 39:24He is the eighth man to bat against Billingham in this quarter fall game.
- 39:27The A's still looking for their first hit.
- 39:29The John Jack Billingham three quarter arm motion and hits that fastball on the outside corner.
- 39:34That's for most of the strikes they're called.
- 39:37Green right handed batter.
- 39:39Odom the pitcher will be on deck.
- 39:43Campanella is dealing there now and there's a breaking.
- 39:45Dick Bunter can't pick it up there.
- 39:47Kershaw has him easy.
- 39:48The ball simply died down the third base line only a foot or two away from the plate.
- 39:53And Bench had an easy chance to get.
- 39:55Dick Green kind of found his way off.
- 39:58Well John Blue Moon Odom comes out.
- 40:00Odom a pretty good hitter.
- 40:02199 lifetime and any time you get a pitcher around 200 he's a good hitting pitcher.
- 40:07He's at 12 lifetime home runs, two of those this year.
- 40:11And can he run 28 times during the regular season as Odom has been used as a pinch runner?
- 40:17Right handed batter, fine athlete.
- 40:20Quarter fall game, we're in the last of the third.
- 40:22Billingham throws and he gets that strike again on the outside corner.
- 40:26A three quarter motion to the right handed hitter.
- 40:28It looks like it's bearing in on you and nips the outside corner.
- 40:32Billingham back and throws again.
- 40:34This is too far outside and it's one ball, one strike to Odom.
- 40:41Lead off batter, Kathy Campanella.
- 40:43She is on deck.
- 40:47Billingham ready and throws and there's a foul.
- 40:49It gets back to the legs of the umpire Mel Sonnett.
- 40:52Picked up by one of the ball boys.
- 40:56Well we were talking back and forth out and I as Rose was charging in from third on the great play by Green and Morgan's ground ball.
- 41:03An unofficial trip at Cincinnati.
- 41:05Would that ball have gotten through or would Morgan or rather Green have been playing so deep he would have been able to get Morgan anyway.
- 41:11Braking pitch down low in the strike zone but down low.
- 41:15We've all seen strikes now to Odom.
- 41:22Next they order to hit the other way not to get the batter out and he swings and strikes out on a curve ball.
- 41:31That is strike out number three for Jack Billingham as Campanella strikes out number one.
- 41:36He comes up.
- 41:39Odom has also struck out three.
- 41:43On the Odom the surrender of a six.
- 41:46Each man has walked about.
- 41:50The third comes Menke breaking pitch fouled and behind the plate and over toward the onbexer.
- 41:55One strike Campanella.
- 42:03Billingham ready again.
- 42:05Back to throw this one's to one ball one strike.
- 42:08He said that Mel Sonnett is behind the plate.
- 42:11Down the right field line is Lynn Harnett.
- 42:13He's the second game in Cincinnati.
- 42:15He is the veteran of this group and comes to World Series at Keery.
- 42:20Bob Engel of the Master League down the second base.
- 42:22There's a curve ball.
- 42:24Look at the slider.
- 42:26On the outside corner breaking pitch and it's a called strike.
- 42:29One ball two strikes.
- 42:30Bob Engel of the Master League working down the second base.
- 42:33He's in his first World Series.
- 42:38Billingham ready in the last of the third and throws an off-feed breaking pitch down under there dug out by Bench.
- 42:43It is two balls two strikes to Campanella.
- 42:45No score last of the third.
- 42:48The Reds very nearly scored making their running game work with Rose going to second.
- 42:53Stealing second and drawing the high throw from Kenneth and allowing them to go on the third.
- 42:57The best of the sports is anybody's thumb.
- 42:59Bench moves outside.
- 43:00The pitch is outside.
- 43:01And it's on three and two to Campanella.
- 43:08With two strikes, Menke is backed up for third base.
- 43:13With all two strikes.
- 43:15And going to Campanella to get out and make things happen for the A's in this sort of ball game.
- 43:19Ground ball, fourth short shot, candy charger, side arms and has for speedy Campanella by four or five steps.
- 43:26The beginning of Billingham around hipster errors.
- 43:29Now it's on to three complete innings and it's riding up.
- 43:32Oakley's nothing.
- 43:33Hello, I'm Johnny Bench for Ann Collin Shield wipers.
- 43:36And I want to talk to service station men who display the bright yellow Ann Collin Shield wipers service cabinet.
- 43:41You can make the wiper business good business simply by asking one little question of every driver.
- 43:46Do your wipers streak your windshield?
- 43:49No high pressure, no hard fill.
- 43:51If the answer is yes, suggest replacing the streakers with fresh Ann Collin wipers and tell them you can do it in second.
- 43:57That's all there is to do.
- 43:59It's as easy as taking the base on balls.
- 44:01That's Ann Collin wipers by Anderson.
- 44:04Now the hard fill is just a little wax and even harder.
- 44:13This year the turtle has the hardest shell in ever.
- 44:16The only thing that gets through is his son Mike Mama.
- 44:19Harder.
- 44:21Liquid or cream car wax, the turtle goes on easy and stays on hard.
- 44:26Now the hard fill is just a little wax and even harder.
- 44:30You improve turtle wax, anything else is mock turtle.
- 44:39Now Michael, Jim Simpson and Jim I know once began to game one of the first questions to be asked is most of the players will be the light at this time.
- 44:47How did it affect you at the beginning of the game?
- 44:49Because we've had only one hit through three, we go to the fourth inning, Collin leads off to the right.
- 44:53Collin swung on the first pitch and rounded back to Odom in the first inning. In the third is Bando, told the left-hander about his plays around his hip to Bum.
- 45:01It's high and it's one and all to Bobby Collin.
- 45:05Collin now is one for nine in serious play.
- 45:12Bando remains in on the grass, making it Collin naturally wants to get on so Johnny Benz can come up and try to drive him in.
- 45:20John Ball scored the second base in green, easy chance for Green.
- 45:23The ball stayed down as he closed him out. Instead of taking Zithoff it looked like it hit a little bit of Muff there.
- 45:28After a second off just got a roll along the ground and Green picked it up and threw out Collin.
- 45:35Now here's Johnny Benz and the big thing is as Benz, right-handed flutter stepping in, he stepped in with nobody on base.
- 45:47John Groome Odom is now allowed no earned runs in his last 22 minutes with only one unearned run over that.
- 45:54Benz, big right-handed batter and there's an overhand breaking pitch that's plenty to miss him.
- 46:02Right ball.
- 46:06The A's won the first two games of this 1970 World Series.
- 46:13Odom ready and the pitch is high and off the glove of Kenneth, one ball two strikes.
- 46:18I'm sure that wherever you are you have read that no team in the history of seven game World Series has lost the first two at home and then gone on to win a World Series.
- 46:30Some have won, lost two on the road and come back to win, fouled away and not a play to the right by Benz, but still one ball two strikes.
- 46:39Nobody's ever lost their first two games at home and then come back to win a World Series.
- 46:46The Reds would like to make a little history in 1970, but here comes the first.
- 46:51Odom ready and changes up and he's called out looking on a third called strike.
- 46:57Change up and perhaps begs his looking back ball, but whatever it was, that's not the pitch that Johnny Benz thought he'd get.
- 47:04Strike out number four for Odom.
- 47:09Odom since the walk to road has now retired the next three men in a row and nobody's hit the ball out of the infield.
- 47:16As a matter of fact against Odom only Perez has hit the ball past the infield and will he set the making of a tether for him.
- 47:22The two men have gotten the ball out of the infield.
- 47:24Perez is up there now and the first pitch is high to him ball one.
- 47:29Perez had a three and 0 count, went to three and two and then broke his bat and swiped softly to short left field.
- 47:36Drop down to fourth, Odom back ready to throw.
- 47:39Overhand breaking pitch down Perez, swings and misses.
- 47:43Odom changes on everything.
- 47:46A curve ball and a fast ball.
- 47:48Moves the ball around.
- 47:53One ball one strike.
- 47:56Breaking pitch stays high and inside, two balls one strike.
- 47:59Odom does have a good fast ball, but he does not have the fast ball that he had before he had elbow problems back in 69-70.
- 48:11He just had a superior fast ball then.
- 48:14Hitting coach now says he's got an excellent fast ball.
- 48:17Two balls one strike.
- 48:19Odom ready to work again to the right hand of Perez.
- 48:21He changes on it at the end of the throw for a three and Odom and Perez brings in the two ball three strike.
- 48:32George Hendricks, if he played any deeper, practically would be on the warning flag.
- 48:36The left center field, expecting Tony Perez who is four for eight in this world too.
- 48:41Two two pitch fast ball, just misses on the outside corner and that was really a just miss.
- 48:49Odom gave Mel Schoenner the big stare and it's three and two with two out to Perez.
- 48:57Here's something with a man like Odom, does he come back with a fast ball, does he go to that big change up curve, what did he come in with?
- 49:02He changes on a breaking pitch and strikes it off clean.
- 49:06Now on to Perez, he's on the last of the fourth.
- 49:09The Oakland fans with a tennis waiting here.
- 49:11Here's Blue Moon Odom, the score Cincinnati nothing, Oakland nothing.
- 49:20Gillette makes a better double edge now than the one your father used.
- 49:24The smoothest edge we can put on a blade, but the smoothest shave we can put on your face.
- 49:30The platinum plus blade.
- 49:32And someday Gillette will make even a better blade for your son.
- 49:35The more things change, the more they stay the same.
- 49:39We made the first blade and we're still the first blade.
- 49:43Gillette, platinum plus.
- 49:45Thrust, wet, broken, lost.
- 49:49That's a match for you.
- 49:51And that's why now there's Cricket, the new disposable butane lighter by Gillette.
- 49:56It's light, rugged, reliable.
- 49:59The Cricket lighter is good for thousands of lights, which means it lasts for months.
- 50:04Time after time, light after light, Cricket gets the job done.
- 50:09Midnight black or fire red, it's more than a match for any lighting problem.
- 50:13Cricket, the new disposable butane lighter by Gillette, only $1.49.
- 50:22Maddie Allure will start the Oakland fours, followed by Joe Rudy and the cleanup hit of Mike Epstein
- 50:27in the short of ball games.
- 50:29Lou works billing end to a three-feet down back in the first inning and then ground it the other way,
- 50:34the shortstop and changes for him out by 20.
- 50:38Billing end has struck out three, allows no hit, and walks one.
- 50:41Oldham has struck out five, allows one hit and walks one.
- 50:53Lou left hand the batter.
- 50:55Mike units third base and Lou gets a look at a slow breaking third inside and low.
- 51:05They blame Maddie the other way in the outfield.
- 51:08It hits to the other field.
- 51:09There's the hit down low and it's two-toed to Lou.
- 51:15No runs in the ball game, only one hit.
- 51:18Irv Norton, coaching a third base, the ultimate, very easy there at first base.
- 51:24Billing end running to the road, there's a three-quarter fastball,
- 51:27a quarter on motion and it's right underneath the court.
- 51:30Two balls, one strike, and a little bit of a beating.
- 51:33He's waiting that one out all the way.
- 51:35As the lead off bat, he's trying to be out just a little while.
- 51:37Billing end is going to be a good one.
- 51:39Comes back, ball is just in the field.
- 51:41George Coleman comes on, still running, is there and has it.
- 51:45Almost came back to second base.
- 51:47Morgan never made a move.
- 51:48George Cheney went out.
- 51:50Morgan has run a long way.
- 51:56Joe Rudy called out on strikes to him in the first inning.
- 52:03Rudy, who had the home run.
- 52:06Rudy, who had the great set.
- 52:08Rudy, who was the big man in the second game of his World Series, stepped in.
- 52:17Joe Rudy has a lot of power, the right and right center.
- 52:20There's a breaking pitch on the outside corner, looks like a winning end spot.
- 52:24And so Coleman flings around in the right center.
- 52:31No score and he's having a heavy hit.
- 52:35That's about his way on and he's not doing it.
- 52:37Joe Rudy bumps his way on and brings up the left.
- 52:48They have a power hitter, Mike F. G.
- 52:50Mike F. G. is doubting for that.
- 52:53Billingham has one major problem.
- 52:55He does not follow through correctly.
- 52:57He is never in position to see if anything hits back toward the mound.
- 53:01The Reds have been working with Jack all season long,
- 53:04but it just seems to be a thing he can't do anything about at this particular point.
- 53:08So I guess somebody with the A's has got to the Reds notice it and Rudy pays off.
- 53:14Mike F. G. stands well back in the batter's box.
- 53:17Looks like a lot of pitches for a big power slugger.
- 53:20He walked on four pitches last time up.
- 53:22Rudy leads off at first.
- 53:24The first pitch is a fastball down low to F. G.
- 53:27All on.
- 53:30Rudy Kamara.
- 53:32Kamara is on deck.
- 53:34Epstein shares to Irving on the third base.
- 53:36So a two-assure signal from Dick Williams, the manager,
- 53:38in the dugout along the third base line.
- 53:41Billingham, pitching from the stretch.
- 53:44Under the throw.
- 53:45Throws, down ball to the right side.
- 53:46Morgan, over.
- 53:47Goes to second base for one.
- 53:49Back to first base.
- 53:50Not in time.
- 53:52Epstein is on after bouncing into a fourth play.
- 53:57And still with one arm, but now with two out, he is down.
- 54:01Who tried to sacrifice energy to long in the second of him.
- 54:05Epstein was one out of second, and Bando reached on the field of score.
- 54:10Bando has been in a horrendous slump in the open age.
- 54:16Over his last 36 times at bat.
- 54:19Touching back through the playoffs.
- 54:21And yet he was the man who won the most games with the winning RBI throughout the regular season.
- 54:27Epstein leads off at first base.
- 54:29And a breaking pitch into the outside corner as Bando steps his way to strike one to foul.
- 54:39Gaze in the yellow shirt.
- 54:40Selly green batting helmet.
- 54:42White pants.
- 54:43White jeans.
- 54:46Very colorful.
- 54:50Bando has taller.
- 54:51He has 15 home runs during the regular season.
- 54:53Billingham back and a three-quarter motion pitch.
- 54:56Almost gets away from Ben.
- 54:58He has to count to keep it in front of him.
- 55:01One ball, one strike to Dough Bando.
- 55:08Only nearly 6 minutes of specific time, and the mountains are beautiful at the time,
- 55:12but it's nice not to have rain.
- 55:15There's a ground ball behind the place, Dough, and it's one ball, two strikes to Dough Bando.
- 55:21A run, one hit, no errors.
- 55:24A run, one hit, and one error for Oakland.
- 55:27Back to the fourth.
- 55:28Game three of the World Series.
- 55:29Goal from one to third pitch.
- 55:36Billingham, Billingham, he's ahead of the batter, Bando, throws, and there's a foul ball.
- 55:39Out of play, off to the right end.
- 55:41Well back into the middle of the game.
- 55:44Down to first base line.
- 55:46Still one ball and two strikes.
- 55:55Bando hardly steps up at the box.
- 55:57He's ready.
- 55:58He's still at Billingham.
- 55:59He steers back at Marquez to his first and throws, and the fast ball gets it.
- 56:02Bando looking, foul strike three, and Billingham is now put down four.
- 56:07A run, one bump, eight hits.
- 56:10No errors, one man left.
- 56:11At the end of four, it's all the same.
- 56:14Oakland and the defensive body, nothing, nothing.
- 56:17I'm sure you've all heard of the Plymouth Duster.
- 56:20It's a great little car.
- 56:22It's an economical, seats five, comfortably.
- 56:26But maybe you haven't heard of the Space Duster.
- 56:29That's what Christ the Plymouth is calling their Duster when you order the new fold down rear seat.
- 56:36Good feature.
- 56:37Gives you all sorts of room in the back.
- 56:39Six and a half feet, in fact.
- 56:42Practically transforms the car into a miniature moving van.
- 56:47It's fully carpeted back there, too.
- 56:50Something else I think you'll like, the optional sliding metal sunroof.
- 56:56Chrysler Plymouth believes that since the 73 Duster is smart looking and offers features like these,
- 57:03it could very well be America's best small car for the money.
- 57:08And I think they're right.
- 57:13Plymouth Duster, extra tier in engineering.
- 57:16Makes a difference.
- 57:21Now, Michael, Jim Simpson, game three of the 1972 World Series at the Oakland Commiseum.
- 57:28Hitting battle.
- 57:29Groom Monodum and Jack Sillingham.
- 57:31They've been top.
- 57:32We've had a broken back single.
- 57:33They only hit for the red by Yannick Manke.
- 57:35A front single.
- 57:36They only hit for the A's by Joe Rudy.
- 57:38Fifth inning.
- 57:39Manke leads off.
- 57:40And here again, he's hit.
- 57:42Manke, Geronimo, and Pena in this sort of thing.
- 57:45Manke, right handed hitter.
- 57:47Van Bell, not expecting him to slide a bonus way on.
- 57:50Is playing behind the back at third base.
- 57:52Autumn was allowed to go for one throw.
- 57:54Ready to throw and throws a fast ball but it's down low.
- 57:57One ball, no strikes.
- 57:58Manke.
- 57:59Manke got his base hit at the second with two out.
- 58:04The standard when Geronimo's round around to end that second inning.
- 58:09Groom Monodum ready again and throws.
- 58:11And just misses again.
- 58:13And on the side, two balls, no strikes.
- 58:15Groom Monodum is 26 years old.
- 58:17Born and still lives in Macon, Georgia.
- 58:20His counterpart, Jack Billingham, is 29.
- 58:23Born in Orlando.
- 58:24Lives in nearby Winter Park, Florida.
- 58:26Throw a couple of sevens.
- 58:27Men hitting tonight.
- 58:29Fast ball is down low.
- 58:31And it's three and oh.
- 58:33Groom Monodum has been here before.
- 58:35He has been to three and ohs on a couple of them.
- 58:40But he has watched none of them and he went three and oh off.
- 58:47Doesn't want to put that leadoff man on base.
- 58:49The left hander Geronimo coming up.
- 58:52Groom Monodum ready.
- 58:53Throws on three and oh.
- 58:54And taking all the way.
- 58:55And the pitch is out of the strike zone.
- 58:57And it's four point on fours.
- 59:00Groom Monodum.
- 59:01Walks Manke.
- 59:02Second base on ball.
- 59:06And Geronimo who grounded the green a second in the second inning.
- 59:13Geronimo out.
- 59:15Left handed hitter.
- 59:16But again, Hendricks is playing him over.
- 59:19And has now been waved over even harder into left center field.
- 59:22Here's the other way.
- 59:23Jim McFerrin is surprising.
- 59:24Most of the players play him straight away.
- 59:26And if anything, they play him to close.
- 59:28He's been played right but nobody's played him the opposite way this year.
- 59:32Mando has now moved him on the grass.
- 59:35As the ball hits down the left field line.
- 59:37Foul there is Geronimo.
- 59:38Mando's over.
- 59:39Rudy's over.
- 59:40Now both watch it drips in oh.
- 59:41Just about the second row of the seat.
- 59:44Well out of reach though.
- 59:45There's a lot of room down the third base and first base line.
- 59:50Until you get about 280 feet away.
- 59:53And then it closes in for the foul line.
- 59:55Both down the left and right field line.
- 59:58Geronimo left hander Better has a count of one strike zone.
- 1:00:02Manke at first base.
- 1:00:03The net team.
- 1:00:04Knowing Manke is not prepared to grace the left flank behind the bag.
- 1:00:08Now she can toward the bag.
- 1:00:11Backs off as Geronimo is ready.
- 1:00:13Mando's in.
- 1:00:14Geronimo squares around the bump before he even throws.
- 1:00:16And the pick is high enough at the strike zone.
- 1:00:18Mando has started in because Geronimo is waiting for Geronimo to go into his windup before he's done it.
- 1:00:24He was just standing there ready to bump.
- 1:00:28One ball, one strike.
- 1:00:30The F team came over and yelled something to John Blue Moon Odom.
- 1:00:34At the top of the fifth.
- 1:00:36There is no score.
- 1:00:39They are really playing Geronimo.
- 1:00:40They hit it to the opposite field.
- 1:00:42Mando is just way around in left center.
- 1:00:46Geronimo now.
- 1:00:47Tennesse needs to be outside of the play.
- 1:00:48Odom throws.
- 1:00:49There's a ground ball court for the F team.
- 1:00:51The runner will get the second.
- 1:00:52And now he flips to first.
- 1:00:53Takes the first base.
- 1:00:54There goes the one to the third base.
- 1:00:56A good shot.
- 1:00:57F team had to play right in front of him.
- 1:00:59The pitcher goes over.
- 1:01:00Green goes over.
- 1:01:01He flips the ball toward Green.
- 1:01:02And there's the second arrow.
- 1:01:04And with none out, we've got one of the first and third everybody's base.
- 1:01:08Big, big break for the Reds.
- 1:01:10He was a Zed team fielder to the ball.
- 1:01:12He didn't know whether the pitcher would be there or Green would be there.
- 1:01:14He touched the Green and Zed team, Odom coming over, was looking for Odom as he reached for the ball.
- 1:01:22And it came out loose and enabled Mendy to move to third.
- 1:01:25And Geronimo stayed to first base.
- 1:01:27So instead of one out or under the second, there's nobody out.
- 1:01:29Let us just first and third.
- 1:01:31Enfield comes in at the corners now.
- 1:01:33As Darryl Jennings, who's stuck out, is up.
- 1:01:36That's the second arrow.
- 1:01:39F team looks to second.
- 1:01:41Saw he had no play there.
- 1:01:42Geronimo was hustling all the way.
- 1:01:44And F team simply had nobody really to throw to.
- 1:01:48He had his choice, really.
- 1:01:50But which one?
- 1:01:51The ball got away from both of them.
- 1:01:54Odom ready.
- 1:01:55Jennings takes out of the play for one, ball one.
- 1:01:58Billy Ham, not a hitting pitcher at all, will be the next to hit.
- 1:02:02Rose, however, the leadoff batter, he is on deck.
- 1:02:04Kenneth walked up to talk to Odom.
- 1:02:06Top of the fifth.
- 1:02:07It all started when Mendy walked up for a second.
- 1:02:10Geronimo topped the ball toward F team at first base.
- 1:02:12He got out to look down to second.
- 1:02:14Mendy had a great jump on the ball, was already in there.
- 1:02:17F team would not move.
- 1:02:19World of throw to first base.
- 1:02:21Flipped it underhand to Odom and Green who was emerging on the back.
- 1:02:25And the ball got away from both of them.
- 1:02:28Mendy, heads up, continued running on the third base.
- 1:02:32A ball no strike.
- 1:02:33Kamee, quick hitter, batting left-handed, waits for the pitch of Odom.
- 1:02:37He throws and there's a foul at the plate, dribbling off towards photographers over to the left side of the plate.
- 1:02:43One ball, one strike.
- 1:02:49Odom really looking to strike out here now.
- 1:02:52If he can get the strike out and Billingham coming up, he has got the opportunity to double play.
- 1:02:57Kamee becomes a very important out for him in this quarterfinal game.
- 1:03:08Mendy is 0-3 in World Series play.
- 1:03:11A ground ball, good score, making even for his base.
- 1:03:17Ready with a 1-1 pitch, playing in the midst of the good tackle.
- 1:03:21One ball, two strikes.
- 1:03:24Now Odom is ahead of Kamee.
- 1:03:26Billingham the next batter.
- 1:03:29He has struck out five.
- 1:03:32This would be his most important strikeout if he can get Kamee.
- 1:03:37And around the other way, the Reds don't want it to happen with their weak hitting Josh Billingham up.
- 1:03:42Kamee swinging that bat, waiting.
- 1:03:49Odom is in the stretch.
- 1:03:52He looks to first.
- 1:03:54Now it's a breaking pitch, and it is fouled high in the air and off the third base side.
- 1:03:59Bando comes over, but it bounds off the top of the A.
- 1:04:02He's got a roof at about six-row side.
- 1:04:04Still one ball, two strikes.
- 1:04:07Bando retreats his hat and heads back to third base.
- 1:04:10Kamee steps back in and Odom has a new baseball.
- 1:04:14Old score, since the night he's hit, making it third and on the other, Geronimo at first.
- 1:04:32The waiting game now, Odom has his sign and is ready.
- 1:04:37The one-two pitch, he's struck him out.
- 1:04:42And he walks away, strikeout number six.
- 1:04:45And that will bring up Billingham, and that will bring in Al Michaels to give me a word here if someone's going down to the dugout here.
- 1:04:55And will bring in Al Michaels to tell me if you can't out, can Mr. Billingham bump?
- 1:05:01Well, Jack got his problems with the hitter.
- 1:05:03That's no secret.
- 1:05:05He's probably the worst hitting hitter on the staff.
- 1:05:09And he's not a very good butter.
- 1:05:11He's laid down a couple this season.
- 1:05:13Dick Williams, by the way, is out of command right now.
- 1:05:15He's been throwing.
- 1:05:16Bando is there.
- 1:05:17Odom and Dennis are talking about the possibility.
- 1:05:20What's Billingham going to do here?
- 1:05:21If they squeeze, I don't think it's going to be the suicide squeeze with the safety squeeze.
- 1:05:25We're going to pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:05:29633 KTW, Portland, Oregon.
- 1:05:33There's something about stopping in at McDonald's for a snack in the afternoon or evening.
- 1:05:38Stopping in for a note at McDonald's fries and a nice and cold Coca-Cola.
- 1:05:43So after school, after shopping or the game, try it.
- 1:05:47McDonald's fries and a nice and cold Coca-Cola.
- 1:05:50It's a nice break in your day.
- 1:05:53You can't help it today. You can't help it today. You can't help it.
- 1:06:03In this game, with one out and runners with the runners, first and third.
- 1:06:09They're all ready. Odom looks in and throws.
- 1:06:12There goes the runner, the second base. The ball is hit to right field.
- 1:06:15In comes Matty Lue in right field and foul.
- 1:06:17Four-point catch. Look for it.
- 1:06:20There's Geronimo off and running towards second base.
- 1:06:24The A's have a lot of plays when they start that time this game, as you most of all thought.
- 1:06:30Whether or not to throw through, whether or not to cut it off and give up the run.
- 1:06:36But of course, Geronimo was going in an effort to erase the possibility of the double play.
- 1:06:43That's the one thing the Reds don't want. That's the one thing the A's do want.
- 1:06:47It is one strike. And now Bando, yelling instructions to Green at second base and camping out the shortstop.
- 1:06:55What to do should it happen again. Where to go with the ball.
- 1:06:58Do you cut off the run? Do you go for the double play?
- 1:07:02One strike, kids. Geronimo may be going again. Nope. It's a pit stop.
- 1:07:05They thought he might be going again. And it's one ball, one strike. Filling in.
- 1:07:11No runs, one hit, no errors for Cincinnati. No runs, one hit, two errors for Oakland.
- 1:07:16And there's an error that has Odum and the A's in deep trouble here on the shortstop.
- 1:07:24One ball, one strike. Odum's bent over, hands on knees. Looks back at first base.
- 1:07:32Hands are dry. Now looks into his second base.
- 1:07:36Makes a glance at third base. Not going plenty in a minute. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:07:46And now Dick Green walks over from second base.
- 1:07:51Say something to Odum. Oakland won the first two games and, in all honesty, they were just like this one. Very low scoring, very close.
- 1:08:06The man at third base could be the only one of them all. You never know. It has just been that close with the pitching team.
- 1:08:12These two teams are getting it. Odum is ready. One, two, strike.
- 1:08:16And now the dangerous deep rows.
- 1:08:22With a strikeout and walks comes up. But there are two outs. And Odum can stand back and fly away.
- 1:08:29And of course, low as we will recall, back in Cincinnati, the runner at third base was wanting to get him in, if he could.
- 1:08:38Finally with two strikes, was forced to fling away. That was in the first game. And Ted Kubiak made quite a play on him to throw him out.
- 1:08:45Alex Ramos says something to Menke at third base.
- 1:08:50Rowe, having left hand, has stepped in. Odum trying to get out of the biggest trouble that anybody's been in in this ball game.
- 1:08:58There goes the runner again. It's down low. Tennis throws to second base and he is, well, he is safe.
- 1:09:06Bob Engel down there did not give the save or out, but obviously, Kafeiner has had to come in front of the bag.
- 1:09:12And Geronimo simply slid around him. And that is the second stolen base for the Reds in this ball game.
- 1:09:21Rowe throws second, back in the third. Now Rowe stares down to Grammys.
- 1:09:26First base is open. Two are out. Morgan on deck. One and O that counts to Rowe.
- 1:09:37Odum ready to throw. Throw a fastball. Tennis is outside the plate, down on his knees to bring that one in.
- 1:09:44The ball's no strike. He wanted to make sure that one did not get away for a wild pitch.
- 1:09:49Cincinnati won the most important game of 1972 on a wild pitch. It was a siding game of a national league playoff.
- 1:09:57And the runner scored from third base. Two and O now to Rowe.
- 1:10:06Odum walking around, taking his time, looking out for both Kafeineros and now in for Deep Rowe.
- 1:10:13Rowe is in that deep south from the left side. Tennis moves to the outside front of the plate and there's the ball fouled back to the plate.
- 1:10:20Two balls, one strike. O Morgan is not kneeling on deck, he is standing on deck.
- 1:10:28That in hand. Best opportunity that anybody has had.
- 1:10:37Although Rowe did get as far as third base with two outs. Now they've got men at second and third.
- 1:10:42That was number 30, this is number six. Good enough score. Nice and good feeling play by Green.
- 1:10:48Fastball hits the other way. Line foul and deep down the left field line.
- 1:10:55Rowe did not get around on the good fastball of Odom. Line up foul. Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:11:06Now a few strikes and seven strikes out from his pocket. The last few minutes he has struck out.
- 1:11:11The A's fans go to work on their favorite pitcher, John Blue Moon Odom, looking for the big pitch.
- 1:11:18Odom tears in. Bando is still on the grass at third base. Maybe Rowe might try to get on and bring him to run anyway he can.
- 1:11:25But it is two strikes on him now. Two and two. Odom ready and throws a breaking pitch. That is full strike three.
- 1:11:32That's a lead. Rowe is serious. A breaking pitch no matter the looking fastball.
- 1:11:39A lead at the knee that is caught on on strike. That's our number eight. Odom has lost that first and third.
- 1:11:48He's on to the last with the fifth. Hope with nothing.

- 1:12:51Delta is ready when you are.
- 1:12:56Back in Oakland, California, the fans are still applauding Blue Bull Norton and Blue and Cute Rose.
- 1:13:04Norton's one game strikeout high, this past season's been eight.
- 1:13:07He's already struck out eight.
- 1:13:09The Delta's last of the center will be Henry Kenneth and Greene.
- 1:13:13And now for the last half of the ball game, the worst of the 690 Reds, Al Michael.
- 1:13:18Back at him, Hendrick popped out in the second and in.
- 1:13:24Right hand batter, 23 years old today.
- 1:13:26In 182 this year, his four homers and takes outside ball one.
- 1:13:32Gene Tennis waiting on that.
- 1:13:34Al, I just looked at the empty replay.
- 1:13:35That's hip to down low, but Rose was in such a trough, it was empty.
- 1:13:39Look at the empty replay on color.
- 1:13:42The next pitch over for his strikeout was down one and one.
- 1:13:44Odom, of course, has something extra to write. He has three as he's a strikeout.
- 1:13:48And here's a fellow who averages about four strikeouts per nine innings this year.
- 1:13:52Outside ball two.
- 1:13:54Turn one account on Hendrick.
- 1:13:56Jack Gimham in four innings has given up just one hit.
- 1:13:59A one single by Joe Rudy in the fourth.
- 1:14:02He's lost one, struck out four.
- 1:14:07Two one-ticks.
- 1:14:08His first strike in the count is even.
- 1:14:10Two and two.
- 1:14:12He's played about an hour and eight or nine minutes.
- 1:14:16Bottom of the fifth inning, no score.
- 1:14:19He's got one hit.
- 1:14:22There are two two-picks.
- 1:14:23Outside ball three.
- 1:14:25Four counts.
- 1:14:29Don Dullup goes for the reds tomorrow in game number four.
- 1:14:34Here's Don from the west coast, five-twenty to skip a time.
- 1:14:38Eight-twenty Eastern time.
- 1:14:40Holton for the A's.
- 1:14:42Three-two-picks.
- 1:14:43Don and Lepin.
- 1:14:44Down goes Hendrick on strike.
- 1:14:46That's five for Billingham.
- 1:14:48So third team strikeout in the game.
- 1:14:52Odom with eight.
- 1:14:53Billingham has his step and he's tenaced about it.
- 1:14:56Down to the line in the second inning.
- 1:15:01Billingham's been raised to a shot.
- 1:15:02The A's have picked just one ball to the outfield.
- 1:15:06Pop-up by Alou, which really could have been caught by Morgan Asheny, one of the infielders.
- 1:15:15Dennis, go for one.
- 1:15:16Two-parade in the World Series.
- 1:15:18Shakespeare breaking through, blowing away.
- 1:15:20Ball one.
- 1:15:22The green will be nice.
- 1:15:23One out with a Baker's empty.
- 1:15:25Bottom of the fifth inning, no score.
- 1:15:28A's leading the series.
- 1:15:30Two games to nothing.
- 1:15:33Billingham and Odom, locked up.
- 1:15:38O'House looking out for.
- 1:15:39World Series game ever in Oakland.
- 1:15:42And it spins.
- 1:15:43Jimmie McDonough's one and one.
- 1:15:46Billingham especially tough on the right-handed hitters.
- 1:15:50Comes in three-quarter and drops down even lower than that from the side.
- 1:15:55One-one-pick into a strike.
- 1:15:56It's the inside part, whether high one or two.
- 1:16:06Billingham working quickly.
- 1:16:07Just two picks.
- 1:16:08And the one-two-pick, Herb, flung on ground to foul by a third.
- 1:16:13The Reds have meant to be a third.
- 1:16:14Caney has enjoyed.
- 1:16:15Morgan has second.
- 1:16:17The Reds are third.
- 1:16:19The outfield, Rose on left.
- 1:16:21Oakland and Kenner, you're on the more right.
- 1:16:29One-two-pick out.
- 1:16:32A wide by Billingham and the one-two-pick to Kenner is outside for all two.
- 1:16:37Two and two.
- 1:16:38Really no threats for the A's so far.
- 1:16:41Epstein-Walk leading off in the second.
- 1:16:43Bando fourth, Simmons is third.
- 1:16:45And Rudy the bun single in the fourth, he's one out.
- 1:16:48But he is third.
- 1:16:50And the next pick outside in the counter is full.
- 1:16:56Three and two on Kenner.
- 1:17:05Mickey well by the third.
- 1:17:06The outfield, Davis, third left.
- 1:17:09Billingham checking with Bengt.
- 1:17:10In his lineup and the three-two-pick called strike three.
- 1:17:14So there's number six and three in a row for Billingham.
- 1:17:19And this time the lineups in the Oakland Coliseum are definitely not the usual.
- 1:17:25I thought maybe Billingham and Odom were exceptionally sharp early in the game.
- 1:17:30Perhaps because it was a try-light, but at the moment the lineups have taken almost full of that.
- 1:17:37So they're doing it on talent now.
- 1:17:39Green the batter outside, ball one.
- 1:17:43Green trying to bun in the third inning.
- 1:17:45Johnny Bengt's going out.
- 1:17:48And the next draft is spending most of the season under the table there.
- 1:17:52One out there is high ball two.
- 1:17:54Had a bad back.
- 1:17:56Tried to this season with the A's as if regular second baseman, Ben Kiel, came back in late August.
- 1:18:07Had three runs battered there.
- 1:18:11Two out, base is empty.
- 1:18:12Two under the couch, Odom on back.
- 1:18:26No runs, one hit, no errors for the Reds.
- 1:18:28No runs, one hit and two errors for the A's.
- 1:18:33Billingham into his lineup and their two under green is outside, ball three.
- 1:18:37Three and one.
- 1:18:39Billingham went to a three ball counter on Epstein in the second inning and walked in.
- 1:18:43The only walks were four and two and three.
- 1:18:48Jack is normally good control.
- 1:18:54And tonight, that's good control.
- 1:18:57Three one pitch is a set playing foul off to the right.
- 1:19:01Full count.
- 1:19:07Billingham with a Dodger chain for many years came up through their minor league system.
- 1:19:12Made his major league debut with the Dodgers in 1968.
- 1:19:16He was a relief that year.
- 1:19:17Then sent to Houston, spent three years there, now with the Reds.
- 1:19:21Three two pitch, it's time slowly for a third touch play.
- 1:19:24Most of the time he's on half note play.
- 1:19:26Then he's slowly coming through the hole.
- 1:19:30Make you feel in the ball, see me, but it was slowly hit on the grass to the left of the mound.
- 1:19:35And by the time that he came up with it, futile to throw to first base.
- 1:19:39So he just held on and green has Oakland's second hit.
- 1:19:43Won a bunch single and now an infield hit.
- 1:19:46And up comes sector blue moon Odom.
- 1:19:49Odom struck out on the third of it.
- 1:19:53Odom hit 121 this season.
- 1:19:55He had two runs banded in and they came on a pair of home runs.
- 1:20:02Right hand batter, Cleveland's in the two, they blew it by 0-1.
- 1:20:10Norton, goes in the third.
- 1:20:13Jori Adair, that's her.
- 1:20:15No score in the fifth, two out.
- 1:20:18Here's their strike one pitch.
- 1:20:20Breaking ball into a strike, inside corner, nothing in two.
- 1:20:25Campanella's gone back.
- 1:20:30Odom turns his back on the plate and looks for the off field with his playing Odom around towards right.
- 1:20:36Every second there was normal depth, making even with the back of third.
- 1:20:40Perez is stepping a half back to green first.
- 1:20:46Billingham has the belt.
- 1:20:48At last the first and the strike two pitch.
- 1:20:50The punter sent missed strike three.
- 1:20:51The shot retired as Jack Billingham strikes out the shot.
- 1:20:55And now has seven strikeouts through five and we've had 15 in the game.
- 1:20:59Two runs, one hit, green left at first, it's an end of five.
- 1:21:03Cincinnati nothing, Oakland nothing.
- 1:21:05Hello, this is Johnny Bench speaking for ANCO Windshield Wipers.
- 1:21:08And I'd like to talk to service station men who display the big bright yellow ANCO Windshield Wiper Service Cabinet.
- 1:21:14You're in a top position for bringing your customers home safe.
- 1:21:18And I'll tell you how.
- 1:21:20Many customers have wipers that streak their windshields and believe me, in a driving rain storm or snow storm,
- 1:21:26they couldn't find first base on their hands and knees.
- 1:21:29It's especially bad on drivers with those hidden windshield wipers because in fair weather they forget all about them.
- 1:21:35Now you know the best wipers are made from pure rubber.
- 1:21:38And the best rubber goes bad from wind, sun, and heat from the engine and it hardens.
- 1:21:42Wipers need replacing after about six months or there could be danger ahead.
- 1:21:47It's up to you to ask every driver if his windshield wipers are streaking.
- 1:21:50If the answer is yes, they need fresh wipers right now.
- 1:21:54Here's a pair of ANCO Windshield Wipers properly fitted to the car's windshield.
- 1:21:58You can bring your customers home safe with ANCO Wipers.
- 1:22:02ANCO by Anderson.
- 1:22:05Hello again from Oakland, California.
- 1:22:10Along with our Michael's sister, Jim Simpson.
- 1:22:13We go to the Cincinnati Sticks of the Stolas ballgame.
- 1:22:16They're dragging the infield.
- 1:22:17Oldham is warming up.
- 1:22:19We meet the men who will try to get on base and get Johnny Bench.
- 1:22:23He's had a few times in this World Series a chance to drive in some runs.
- 1:22:27In this game, Morgan and Toulon are 0-4.
- 1:22:31And Bench led off in the second.
- 1:22:33So a seven-time and nine at bat came up with none other than one out in the fourth.
- 1:22:38Bench has not had a chance to drive in runs.
- 1:22:40Morgan and Toulon will have got to get on base.
- 1:22:42Again, the Cincinnati Sticks can get it out.
- 1:22:45Joe Morgan stuck out in the first, grounded out in the third,
- 1:22:49and was limping after he reached first base in the third inning.
- 1:22:53He was out on a fine play by Green, but no noticeable limp.
- 1:22:57Now as Morgan steps in, time calls for the moment by the third base umpire,
- 1:23:03Gil Hallis.
- 1:23:06Somebody up and moving around over by the Oakland dugout,
- 1:23:10and that situation is cleared away.
- 1:23:12Morgan waiting at the play.
- 1:23:13First bench is up high, ball one.
- 1:23:16Morgan counting the last playoff game against Pittsburgh, now only for his last 13.
- 1:23:240-4-9 in the World Series.
- 1:23:28Here's a 1-0 pitch on the way.
- 1:23:30Slug on and pop in the air and five ground off to the left.
- 1:23:33Bando and Kettis converge. It's playable.
- 1:23:35And Bando has it. 1-0.
- 1:23:42Morgan John, up comes Bobby Tolus.
- 1:23:47Mention that the ladies have hit only one ball to the off field,
- 1:23:50a pop-slide or shadow center by a little, looking at the red,
- 1:23:53Perez slide to left in the second.
- 1:23:57And that's been it for Cincinnati.
- 1:24:01Bobby Tolus, rounded to Odom, rounded to Green in two serves.
- 1:24:060-2, 1-10 in the series.
- 1:24:11One other ball hit to the off field by the Reds, a looping broken back single by Mention.
- 1:24:19Odom to the plate, change in shot.
- 1:24:22Ball one.
- 1:24:23So in the first five innings, between both clubs, three balls hit out of the infield.
- 1:24:34One out, H is at the end of the set.
- 1:24:39Odom to the plate, 1-0.
- 1:24:41Tolan swings and knickers, turned it over, one and one.
- 1:24:46Tolan out on the 19-71.
- 1:24:48Suffered a ruptured killing tendon in the basketball game in January of 71.
- 1:24:54Went to spring training, was with the club in the regular season, but on that her table led.
- 1:24:59And then re-rupted the tendon in Los Angeles in May, cut out the entire year.
- 1:25:05Two one-fifths, written tie, ball two, good one, off two-fifths.
- 1:25:09Thanks, John.
- 1:25:14Odom and Fialen occurred, is allowed one hit.
- 1:25:18He's lost two, struck out eight.
- 1:25:24The right-hander ready, and there's two one-fifths, who's down low.
- 1:25:27Tolan sets the plane, ball three, three at one.
- 1:25:32The reg of that two-threat, Rose Watt in the third, so second, went to third on an error, but was stranded.
- 1:25:39Then they had runners at first and third, with nobody out of the fifth, but Odom then proceeded to strike out the five.
- 1:25:46Three one-fifths, Tolan takes a step swing, they appeal a third, and it is a strike, according to Bill Halleck.
- 1:25:53A ball according to Mel Steiner, so the third-base on five.
- 1:25:58Over Ruehl, and it's three and two, and of course there's the catcher's option to add the blade on fire to check,
- 1:26:07which Steiner did, and Halleckers is trying to do a full-shot, as Tolan comes around.
- 1:26:13Odom ready, and there's three two-fifths to Tolan, swung on in line foul, right field drive back in the red flow pan.
- 1:26:22And then to the net, Cincinnati nothing, Oakland nothing, in the sixth inning where the base is empty and one out.
- 1:26:29Odom into his lineup, and the three two-fifths to Tolan, swung on and missed, strikeout number nine.
- 1:26:40Here comes Johnny Bench, and this is a familiar scene with Bench and the World Juries, coming up with nobody on base.
- 1:26:51Only one time in the three games has Bench come up with a runner on, and that was in the second game.
- 1:26:58He came up at one point with two on the man at first base, and that's it.
- 1:27:03Bench tonight has rounded the third and struck out, he's over two.
- 1:27:08Right-hander against right-hander, Johnny swings it, misses, foul, oh and a run.
- 1:27:14Will Moon Odom in the regular season, 86 strikeouts in 194 innings, and that's not that impressive, but here tonight in five and two-thirds, nine strikeouts.
- 1:27:26Oh, one pitch, breaking ball, a beauty on the outside, far more to.
- 1:27:34This is his five-ish season, nine strikeouts.
- 1:27:43Odom ready, and the O2 pitch on the way, missing the inside, one into the couch, Perez on deck.
- 1:27:53The A's no run, two hits, two errors. The Reds no run, one hit, no errors.
- 1:28:02The Wind and the one-two pitch to Bench, in from the side, curve, all strike three.
- 1:28:09And the ball to Odom, in from the side, his strikeout, Bench, he strikes out two here in the sixth, he has 10 in six innings.
- 1:28:17The Reds go out one, two, three. No runs, no hits, nobody left.
- 1:28:21And at the end of five and a half, Cincinnati, nothing, Oakland, nothing.
- 1:28:27Broadcast has been brought to you in part by right guard, Andy Pursman.
- 1:28:31The one that really helps keep you dry when the action's hot.
- 1:28:35Right here, right guard is free to introduce a brand new Andy Pursman.
- 1:28:39Right guard, natural scent. It's got the same great left first fighter as regular right guard.
- 1:28:45And it's got a great new scent, made from natural ingredients, so it smells light and clean.
- 1:28:50Not heavy or artificial like a lot of other Andy Pursman.
- 1:28:53New right guard, natural scent, Andy Pursman.
- 1:28:57You like the way it works, and the new natural way it smells.
- 1:29:01No runs, one hit, no errors for Cincinnati, no runs, two hits, and two errors for Oakland.
- 1:29:06Hey, are you one of those guys who turns into a rough neck every morning?
- 1:29:10Does shaving leave your neck rough and irritated?
- 1:29:13If it does, let me tell you about a special kind of Gillette Foamy Face Saver, specially made for you rough neck.
- 1:29:20Face Saver has 25% more lubricants than any other foamy shave cream.
- 1:29:25For better protection against shaving irritation, even on the most sensitive part of your face, your neck.
- 1:29:31So if shaving irritation in your neck, get Foamy Face Saver.
- 1:29:35For the rough neck, they go to the open six, it's a bonus ball game, the top of the batting order for the A's, Campanella, Salou, and Rudy, and here's Al Marshall.
- 1:29:44Alright, Jim Campanella struck out in the first, sounded out in the third.
- 1:29:48Left-handed Dave Hamilton and right-handed Bob Locker are throwing in the A's full time.
- 1:29:54Campanella takes outside, ball one.
- 1:29:58Jack Fillingham allowing two hits, two fires.
- 1:30:02He has seven strikeouts. He's yielded one wash.
- 1:30:06Now Lou waits on that.
- 1:30:08Stores to be out, rambled in, day off because of rain, no batting practice in two days.
- 1:30:131-0 pitch, down low, ball two.
- 1:30:15And the pitchers have dominated tonight.
- 1:30:18Odom with a season high in strikeouts, the film was 10.
- 1:30:23Fillingham, who doesn't strike out that many, has seven in five innings.
- 1:30:30And only three hits in the game, one a broken bat hit and the other two infield hits.
- 1:30:35Campanella takes low, ball three. 3-0.
- 1:30:47Nenke in on the grass, the third. The 3-0 pitch, this is low, ball four.
- 1:30:53So Campanella draws a walk, the second given up by Fillingham.
- 1:30:57The A's have a man at first, nobody out.
- 1:31:00Mattie Allou, the batter, rounded out in the first, slide out in the fourth.
- 1:31:14Nenke in on the grass, the third. Staney and Morgan halfway.
- 1:31:19Perez the first, Odom, Campanella, is down.
- 1:31:23Alfield, down low, and the round third left.
- 1:31:25The stretch and the pitch, he's around the bump, takes his strike as he lets it go by.
- 1:31:29And Lou questions the call by Steiner, 0-1.
- 1:31:38Campanella with ten strikeouts, most strikeouts by a pitcher in a third game, 17 by Bob Gibson in 1968 against the Tigers.
- 1:31:47Next would be 15 by Kofax in 1963, Fanny, pitching the empty Yankees.
- 1:31:58Fillingham's set, the checker first, strike one, pitch, is a butt up the line for the third.
- 1:32:03Perez the first, Morgan has to come off the bench, and he stays the first base.
- 1:32:13They will give bench a throwing error.
- 1:32:22And I believe it will be a double error.
- 1:32:27An error on bench and then an error on Morgan, E2 and E4.
- 1:32:33Rocky Anderson is going to the mound in the bullpen for the Reds.
- 1:32:36Pedro Borbosa starts to warm up, and we've got 30 seconds for stations identification.
- 1:32:42Seven o'clock, KTW Portland, Oregon.

- 1:33:18Rocky Anderson out of the mound, and as he made his way out, he was catching with Frank Humon at the first base on fire.
- 1:33:25Then Bench fielded the bunt, wheeled and fired the first base.
- 1:33:29Joe Morgan had to come off the bag on the high throw, so Louis Saver, Campanaris at second.
- 1:33:35Then Bench went toward the first base on fire to start arguing.
- 1:33:39Morgan started to argue. Perez was coming back the first baseman.
- 1:33:44He started on Humon, and nobody called time.
- 1:33:47Then Morgan turned and threw to Bobby Coder in the center fielder.
- 1:33:51He was backing in behind Campanaris, the runner, but just rolling off his glove.
- 1:33:55Campanaris goes to third, and so the A's have their biggest threat.
- 1:33:58Here we go. Rudy is the batter.
- 1:34:00Stuck out of the first.
- 1:34:02Singled in the fourth.
- 1:34:03Infia plays in. Rudy swings and misses.
- 1:34:05Going one.
- 1:34:07A double-air on the flooring. Bench and Morgan, E2 and E4.
- 1:34:11And so each club now has two errors.
- 1:34:15Joe Rudy, three for nine on the World Series.
- 1:34:18Campanaris to third.
- 1:34:20Ballot is first.
- 1:34:22Nobody out.
- 1:34:27Sillingham back to the plate, breaking fifth inside, one and one.
- 1:34:32Pedro Borbon, working in the bullpen for the Reds.
- 1:34:37Bob Locker, in the A's there.
- 1:34:41Hamilton was up.
- 1:34:44Now Locker throws the ball.
- 1:34:50Now it feels stated to his right.
- 1:34:53The stretch and a one-one pitch on the way.
- 1:34:55One out of this.
- 1:34:56Leaping curve.
- 1:34:57One and two.
- 1:34:58On back is Mike Epstein.
- 1:35:00No score.
- 1:35:02Final of the sixth inning.
- 1:35:04Berg Campanaris to third.
- 1:35:06Maddie Lue is first.
- 1:35:08Nobody out.
- 1:35:13Sillingham now calls John Wons Morgan to come in.
- 1:35:20Mike Epstein waiting on that.
- 1:35:25The A's no runs, two hits, two errors.
- 1:35:28The Reds no runs, one hit, two errors.
- 1:35:36Sillingham hands on knees.
- 1:35:39Here is the set.
- 1:35:43The one-two pitch to Rudy is going on and grounded third.
- 1:35:46Manky does not tag Campanaris but throws the first for the outs.
- 1:35:50The Reds almost had a bizarre double play.
- 1:35:52They get one out.
- 1:35:53Lue goes to second.
- 1:35:54Campanaris alertly holds third.
- 1:35:57The ball hit right to the back of third.
- 1:35:59Manky sealed it and tried to tag Campanaris sliding back in.
- 1:36:03But Campy was safe and then Denny alertly got up by the first to get the out there.
- 1:36:08So the Reds almost did a double play, settle for one.
- 1:36:11And with first base open they will walk Epstein intentionally to road to bases and get to Bando.
- 1:36:18A lot of memorable things in this World Series so far, Jim Simpson, in Wally and game three.
- 1:36:26Now each team has had its chances out and they've got them again on the course with first base open and one up.
- 1:36:32They're putting Epstein, a left-handed springer, to clean up battered 20-2-0 runs on the on-base so they can play for the double play and bring up Sal Bando.
- 1:36:42And Bando has not been affected recently, as we said.
- 1:36:45He's had five singles now and has had 37 times a back.
- 1:36:49A little repeater to come up with a basic load.
- 1:36:51He comes up with a basic load and there's only one out.
- 1:36:53Bando led the team in game-winning RBR.
- 1:36:57He's the captain and he now has a chance here in the quarter-six.
- 1:37:02Sal Bando, busted in the second inning, tried to sacrifice Epstein and bunded into a four-shot and then he stuck out in the fourth.
- 1:37:12Holds the two. Reds can feel the double play depth except for Reds' first base.
- 1:37:16He's hit on the grass. Bando takes down low, ball one.
- 1:37:19Base is loaded. Campanera's the third.
- 1:37:25Lewis second. Epstein is first.
- 1:37:30One out, no score, sixth inning.
- 1:37:35Gillingham ready. Back to the play that comes.
- 1:37:37And Bando is at ground to the Morgan. Should be two. Goes to short for one. Chaney the first, double play.
- 1:37:43And the Reds get out of it.
- 1:37:45Sal Bando hits into a four-six-three double play.
- 1:37:49And the A's go down into sixth inning.
- 1:37:51They had runners at first and third with nobody out. No runs, no hits, two errors, two runners left.
- 1:37:57At the end of sixth, no score.
- 1:38:00Once again, I'm very proud to represent Chrysler Plymouth.
- 1:38:05They've got some good-looking new cars for 73.
- 1:38:09For instance, the Plymouth Fury, it's a beautiful automobile.
- 1:38:14And part of the beauty of it is the way they put the engines together.
- 1:38:19They've got an engine plant in Detroit that turns out 15,000 V8s a week.
- 1:38:25And they test every one of them with some machines that they call engine function testers.
- 1:38:33And these testers have electronic sensors. Nobody else has got them.
- 1:38:37These gizmos find things wrong that people don't find.
- 1:38:41And they find them before they put the engine in the car.
- 1:38:46That's the kind of thing that makes the Fury run better inside while it looks good outside.
- 1:38:52Isn't that the kind of car we've all been looking for?
- 1:38:57Plymouth Fury, extra care in engineering. It makes a difference.
- 1:39:03Back in Oakland, California with Al Michaels, this is Jim Simpson.
- 1:39:06Well, everybody has had their chances in this ballgame. They can't go home saying they never have them.
- 1:39:11Quite the Reds have had man as far as their base and they'll bring him in.
- 1:39:16And now for the first time, Oakland loaded the bases.
- 1:39:20The third man put on a dense lead to fill up the double play that's worked out that way.
- 1:39:24Still no scores.
- 1:39:25We now go to the Cincinnati Sevens in the third game of the World Series.
- 1:39:28The News out.
- 1:39:29All right, Jim, Tony Perez lead drop.
- 1:39:32He has hit the most prodigious blast of the game.
- 1:39:35A routine fly ball to left field.
- 1:39:37Believe it or not, for six things, that's the longest ball that's been hit in the game.
- 1:39:43Fly to left and suck out in two steps, go for two.
- 1:39:46In the World Series, he's four for nine.
- 1:39:48Odom to the plate, down low, ball one.
- 1:39:52One and no to count.
- 1:39:57Perez, Menkes, and Geronimo in the seventh inning.
- 1:40:05Odom ready, back he comes, Perez takes a five, all two.
- 1:40:09Two and no.
- 1:40:11Odom has blocked two, he's stuck out ten.
- 1:40:14The only hit for the Reds, a broken back single by Dennis Menkes in the second inning.
- 1:40:22Odom has stuck out at least one Red in every inning except the second.
- 1:40:28And the two-oh pitch on the way.
- 1:40:30Over the first line, two and one.
- 1:40:34Odom coming over the top, three-quarters, giant arm.
- 1:40:38He's thrown just about every pitch in his repertoire except the blooper pitch tonight.
- 1:40:45Here's a two-one pitch on the way.
- 1:40:47Swung on the ground and in the left field for a base hit.
- 1:40:50So the Reds have their second hit.
- 1:40:52Tony Perez singles to left.
- 1:40:55East Club now has two hits.
- 1:40:57Then up comes Dennis Menkes.
- 1:40:59He singles in the second and walks in the fifth.
- 1:41:01And the A's will get busy in the bullpen.
- 1:41:04Final blue, hustling down from the A's dugout to start to heat up.
- 1:41:08Blue will not start in the World Series.
- 1:41:10At least that's the way Dick Williams plans it at the moment.
- 1:41:14He'll work out in the bullpen.
- 1:41:16And that's where he is right now.
- 1:41:21Dennis Menkes, punch, back toward the man.
- 1:41:23Odom has it, has to go to first with it.
- 1:41:25In time there, Epstein covers.
- 1:41:27And down the second goes Perez.
- 1:41:30Sacrifice one to three.
- 1:41:32The Reds have a tie-breaking run at second.
- 1:41:35Perez is there with one out.
- 1:41:36Take time to run them all.
- 1:41:38They're coming up.
- 1:41:39Lolley fingers joining final blue in the open bullpen.
- 1:41:46Dave Concepcion will start to get ready in the Reds' bullpen.
- 1:41:51The other shortstop, Taney, is due to bat next.
- 1:41:55And Clark Anderson may have designed to hit one.
- 1:42:01Geronimo the batter, rounded out, reached down in there, 0 for 2.
- 1:42:07Left-hand batter takes down low, ball one.
- 1:42:10Geronimo Hitless in the World Series, 0 for 9, robbed on a great play by Mike Keegan Sunday.
- 1:42:17Hit 275 during the regular season with four home runs, 29 runs behind him.
- 1:42:24Hold him ready.
- 1:42:25It's check is checking.
- 1:42:27And the 1-0 pitch on the way is lined up the middle for a base hit.
- 1:42:30The ball's going on the grass.
- 1:42:32Perez around third, comes in with fourth.
- 1:42:34He falls down but gets up and fairs scores.
- 1:42:38Big, big break for the Reds.
- 1:42:40As Perez fell down, rounding third, but got up and came in to score.
- 1:42:45And it's 1-0 Cincinnati, and only because the grass is so wet in the outfield.
- 1:42:51And only because George Hendricks thought he had no chance at all.
- 1:42:54And because the cutoff man Green had no idea he hit his back to the play.
- 1:42:58He didn't see the runner fall down.
- 1:43:00He had the ball, leisurely thrown to him.
- 1:43:03By the time it got to Green, he may not have had a play, but still he made no play.
- 1:43:07Had no idea.
- 1:43:08And as the first one in the ball game, Perez crosses home plate.
- 1:43:11Ketter Jean-Tenis just threw up his arms in despair.
- 1:43:141-0 is takes out Geronimo, singles to center.
- 1:43:18And Perez, despite falling down, rounding third, scores to make it 1-0.
- 1:43:23Chaney the batter, he's struck out twice.
- 1:43:29Geronimo at first.
- 1:43:32He's held on by Epstein.
- 1:43:39Hold him ready and goes to first base, and very nearly sets him off.
- 1:43:43Geronimo getting back.
- 1:43:44And there's a throw for Bowen, up and throwing again in the Cincinnati bullpen.
- 1:43:50So a single by Perez, a sacrifice by Minkie, a single by Geronimo, 1-0 red.
- 1:43:56Hold him ready, Atlanta first, and the pitch, Chaney, it's a high fly ball to left center field.
- 1:44:01Hendricks moves to his right, waits for it, makes the cut, two down.
- 1:44:06All the way they talk about things and rehash things in any World Series game.
- 1:44:10This was not a flagrant as when Johnny Pepke held onto the ball in the 46th World Series
- 1:44:14and Boston played the Cardinals, but the fact that Hendricks does not huffle on the ball
- 1:44:18and Green did not look around is going to be talked about quite a bit.
- 1:44:22It's an earned run, but you wonder should it have scored since Perez fell down.
- 1:44:27It is a first earned run against Dodum in the last 25 innings.
- 1:44:37Jack Dillingham bounced out in the third inning, struck out in the fifth.
- 1:44:42Right hand batter hit 170 during the year, hit 070 rather during the year.
- 1:44:47No homers, throw to first base, Geronimo back.
- 1:44:52Now field skating Dillingham around toward right.
- 1:44:55Bando even with a bag of third, another throw to first.
- 1:44:59Matty O'Loughlin right field, there's a weird fact, he is playing so close to the right field line
- 1:45:03against the right handed batter.
- 1:45:10Picks on the way to Dillingham, is chopped on the ground, it is a foul ball.
- 1:45:14Right side fielded by Epstein who is standing in clear territory, but the ball foul 0-1.
- 1:45:24Reds on top, 1-0 in the seventh inning.
- 1:45:29Right side Geronimo at first base, 2 down.
- 1:45:38Time call as the ball got loose from the bullpen, the A's fan where Vita Blue is throwing along with Roddy Fingers.
- 1:45:45More bone back down now in the reds fan.
- 1:45:49Odom ready, 0-1 pick swung on, and that's 0-2. Pidro on back.
- 1:46:08Odom at the belt, and a second pick, Dillingham swings and punches his foul.
- 1:46:15A lot of memorable plays in the game, the confusion at first base on the part of the A's with Epstein and Green and Odom in the fifth inning.
- 1:46:22But Odom worked out of that.
- 1:46:25In the play where the Reds either thought they had scrawled time or neglected to,
- 1:46:29that might have led to an A's run in the sixth inning.
- 1:46:33But Dillingham worked out of that, and Perez falling down and scoring here in the seventh inning to give the Reds a 1-0 lead.
- 1:46:42It's like you pitch down the way, Dillingham swings and misses, and down he goes, it's number 11 for Blue Monota.
- 1:46:48Reds down in the seventh, but they get a run. Two hits leave one at the end of sixth and a half.
- 1:46:54Cincinnati won, Oakland nothing.
- 1:46:58People who don't hate it drink it.
- 1:47:01Don't start on a new diet, try it.
- 1:47:04You don't have to give up good taste to save on calories.
- 1:47:07It's like cola tastes so good, everybody likes it.
- 1:47:26At Rhodes we have got a lot to share,
- 1:47:31and we care about the people who shop here.
- 1:47:36We'll give you good reason to stop here.

- 1:47:51Convenient, accurate focus for home or office, and at Rhodes, downtown and gateway.
- 1:47:56716 KTW Portland, Oregon.
- 1:48:00Since there's only been one run in the ball game, and that's just been scored, we better recount again what happened.
- 1:48:06Reds got a solid ground ball base, this was a left field, was sacrificed along by Menke,
- 1:48:10run of the line to single the center, Henrik did not charge the ball at all.
- 1:48:14Reds had been waged in and Henrik had given up, he thought he would score.
- 1:48:17He fell down, nobody was looking, who did the cutoff man? Green wasn't looking, and Reds got up and scored.
- 1:48:23Very Henrik leads off at the broken bat looper, the left center, Rhodes and Cullen converge, and it's Cullen for the catch.
- 1:48:30One away, one pitch, one out of the seventh inning, Dean Pinnix the batter, the number seven hitter, rounded out of the second inning,
- 1:48:37stuck out in the fifth.
- 1:48:40Jack Dillingham has really been magnificent through sixth and the third, he's allowed two hits, one a bunch single, the other an infield hit.
- 1:48:48One ball has been hit to the outfield and that little looper, just out on the grass, it's down to the center, caught by Cullen.
- 1:48:56A strike to Dennis, 0-1.
- 1:49:01Dillingham has walked three, one intentionally, he's stuck out seven.
- 1:49:05Jack back to the plate, back ball swung on, grounded to the short, Chaney stays with it, straightens up, throws him out, two down.
- 1:49:15Dick Green is due up, and we're going to see a pinch hitter.
- 1:49:19Gonzalo Marquez is coming up.
- 1:49:25Green had done one for Cedar Knight, rounding out and feeding out an infield roller for a base hit.
- 1:49:34And now Marquez comes up to bat for him.
- 1:49:37Gonzalo Marquez, eight for 21 during the regular season.
- 1:49:42All eight hits for singles, delivered a big hit in the first playoff game with Detroit.
- 1:49:49Left-handed batter from Venezuela takes the ball down low, 1-0.
- 1:49:58Dillingham ready, back he comes, Marquez swings and shots it out outside first.
- 1:50:02Marquez in the eighth inning on Saturday appeared as a pinch hitter for Green and popped out.
- 1:50:08Didn't play on Sunday, so he's 0-1 in the World Series.
- 1:50:121-1 to count, two outs, bases empty, bottom of the seventh inning, 1-0 Cincinnati.
- 1:50:23The 1-1 set down the way, off-speed set missing, ball two, 2-1.
- 1:50:29Tomorrow, game four, Don Gullet works for the Reds and Ken Holtzman for Oakland.
- 1:50:37Will be on the air at 520 Pacific Time.
- 1:50:402-1 pick, one down and missed, slider, 2-2.
- 1:50:47Marquez during the regular season as a pinch hitter, seven for 15.
- 1:50:542-2 pick down the way, chops foul off his foot.
- 1:50:58Blue Moon Odom is due up next, nobody is out on deck for the A's.
- 1:51:10By the blue and that's Joe Forland throwing in the bullpen before open.
- 1:51:15Raleigh Fenyers had been throwing.
- 1:51:18Here's the 2-2 pitch on the way, going on grounded off the glove of Dillingham.
- 1:51:22Morgan back in second, is off balance, so not in time.
- 1:51:28And the A's have the time run out.
- 1:51:30Dillingham, I believe, got just a piece of it as it went by the mound.
- 1:51:35Morgan able to glove it behind second, but is so not in time.
- 1:51:41Marquez beats it out.
- 1:51:45Second is now coming out of the dugout to hit for Blue Moon Odom.
- 1:51:55So Odom leaves after working seven and cracking at 11.
- 1:51:59Alan Lewis comes in to run for Marquez at first base.
- 1:52:07Lewis activated when Reggie Jackson did not play in the World Series.
- 1:52:14Lewis is first, held on by Perez.
- 1:52:19The time run.
- 1:52:21The second, the pitch to Mike Egan is hit in the other center field.
- 1:52:24Bobby Holden is there and waiting, makes the catch for a tie on the side.
- 1:52:28A's go down on the seventh, no runs are hit, they leave one and at the end of seventh, Cincinnati won, Oakland nothing.
- 1:52:36Hi, Johnny Bench Fran, Coinshield Wipers.
- 1:52:38Can you imagine the reaction if a manager told his team that he was supplying them with baseball bats that weren't absolutely the best?
- 1:52:44Well your team, that is your family, deserves the best too.
- 1:52:48Anco Winsfield wiper blades.
- 1:52:50If your present wipers are streaking, replace them with Anco wipers.
- 1:52:54Look for the service station with the bright yellow Anco cabinets.
- 1:52:57They can snap on new blades while you are gassing up.
- 1:53:00Tell them you heard about Anco from Johnny Bench.
- 1:53:03This year almost all the new cars have the same.
- 1:53:06Most of the 1973 models are designed to run on low octane gasoline, like Gulf Tain.
- 1:53:13The owner's manual says so.
- 1:53:15Check the recommendation in your owner's manual and try a tank full of Gulf Tain.
- 1:53:20It has the performance out of this package you'd expect from Gulf and it costs even less than Gulf Regular.
- 1:53:26So why pay more than you have to?
- 1:53:28Try Gulf Tain, the low-cost gasoline for new cars.
- 1:53:37Then coming to our Michael, we have a couple of changes since Green was batted for.
- 1:53:41Ted Kubiak has gone into play second base and since Odom was batted for, guess who?
- 1:53:47Byda Blue has come in.
- 1:53:49Blue who sealed the playoff championship with his excellent binnings of relief from the final game against the Swets.
- 1:53:55Now we've got Kenny Holtzman in the first game of the World Series has come on.
- 1:53:59Byda Blue and he'll face the top of the batting order, Rose Morgan and told him as Rose will switch around to the right side.
- 1:54:05One of the keys now we've been talking about at both ends is he keeps the highly favored Cincinnati Red.
- 1:54:11The left-handers have to be able to handle the top three of the batting order, forcing Rose over to the right side and then getting Morgan and told it.
- 1:54:18One-to-nothing on that play back in the seventh inning which Perez fell rounding third base but nobody really threw home considering that he would score easily
- 1:54:28and perhaps a missed opportunity, perhaps the game would still be sorted, but it is not.
- 1:54:33It is one-to-nothing.
- 1:54:35Byda Blue has had to come on in and here comes Pete Rose and here comes Elmer.
- 1:54:41All right, then Pete Rose has stuck out twice and walks.
- 1:54:46He's batting right-handed for the first time in the game and he hits a line drive backhanded by Kubiak.
- 1:54:51Great play for the out.
- 1:54:53So it doesn't matter who plays second base for the eight tonight, they're going to do the job.
- 1:54:57Dick Green had great play earlier this game of the run and Kubiak comes in, Rose hits the first, steps up the middle and Kubiak had great backhand play for the out.
- 1:55:05One down.
- 1:55:06And in the first game of the World Series Kubiak came on in the ninth inning and made two plays, one of them a fine play to retire the side.
- 1:55:13Again, again, great opportunity, same thing happened tonight.
- 1:55:16That is Joe Morgan.
- 1:55:17He stuck out, bowed out and three-tips, takes a back ball very high, ball one.
- 1:55:22Byda Blue on Saturday in game one, picks up a save.
- 1:55:25We're at two in the third inning, no runs, one hit, one walk, one strikeout.
- 1:55:31Here's a one-oh-fix, back ball missing high, ball two.
- 1:55:35Blue in the playoffs, appeared in four games, we're at five in the third inning, gave up no runs, four hits.
- 1:55:40So in postseason competition he has been tough.
- 1:55:45Two-oh-fix, a five, ball three, three and over count.
- 1:55:49Bando in on the grass, the third.
- 1:55:51Poland on back.
- 1:55:53Cincinnati won, Oakland nothing, one out, base is empty, top of the eighth.
- 1:56:00Blue checking into his lineup and the pitch gives his sight.
- 1:56:04Three and one.
- 1:56:05beaches banner side started to go to first base and they're levels behind flat
- 1:56:19Now field is shading Morgan a bit left.
- 1:56:25Hedrick in center.
- 1:56:27Shaded toward left there, Loura in right field playing deep
- 1:56:32Three-one to southback.
- 1:56:34Bandoor third, Rudy in left, Kendrick in center, and Alou in right.
- 1:56:44The one by blue and the three-two pitch to Morgan is high, ball four.
- 1:56:48So Morgan, who led the majors in walks this season,
- 1:56:51draws his first walk of the night
- 1:56:54and his second walk of the World Series,
- 1:56:56and Bobby Nolan is coming up.
- 1:56:58In the bullpen for the Reds, right-hander
- 1:57:01Gary Nolan is throwing and he's getting some work between starting figures to work
- 1:57:07in the fifth game,
- 1:57:09if a fifth game is necessary on Friday afternoon.
- 1:57:16Bobby Nolan, grounded out in the first, grounded out in the fourth,
- 1:57:20struck out in the sixth.
- 1:57:22Blue goes to first base, a high throw, and Epstein has to reach way up to save it.
- 1:57:29This is only the second time that Morgan has been on base in the series.
- 1:57:37Walked in the first game Saturday,
- 1:57:41but he had rows on ahead of him so he didn't steal. He didn't have a chance to steal.
- 1:57:47The next pitch is right.
- 1:57:49Oh, and one.
- 1:57:51He's also been on one other time on an error in checking back, that's right, on Sunday in the fifth inning,
- 1:57:55and he did steal a base.
- 1:58:02Morgan away to a good-sized lead at first.
- 1:58:05Tolan waiting.
- 1:58:06Bando in channel at third.
- 1:58:08Blue is set, a check of the runner, and the pitch to Tolan is bounded right back through the middle.
- 1:58:13It's a day-tick.
- 1:58:14Bill Morgan, around second, on his way to third, in there easily.
- 1:58:17Tolan goes halfway to second and heads back, and Johnny Banks will come up,
- 1:58:21finally, with a chance to do some damage.
- 1:58:24Bobby Nolan,
- 1:58:25coming up to center, and the big play now is Kubiak, otherwise the Reds would have had a runoff, Blue.
- 1:58:30Kubiak, a great play to Rob Rose for the first out.
- 1:58:34Then a walk to Morgan, now a single by Tolan.
- 1:58:36So the Reds look for insurance,
- 1:58:38Bench is the batter, and the A's again will swing into action in the bullpen as Robbie Fingers tries to heat up for the second time.
- 1:58:49Johnny Banks, facing Blue Moon Odom tonight, rounded out and stuck out twice.
- 1:58:54Looking at Odom's line, he worked seven innings, he gave up one run, three hits, walked two, struck out 11.
- 1:59:05Heating at the mound, Bando is there, and Dick Williams is coming out now to discuss the possibilities with Banks.
- 1:59:14Dick Williams making his way to the mound.
- 1:59:16As he does, we will pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 1:59:24KTW, Portland, Oregon.
- 1:59:29At Rose we have got a lot to share, and we care about the people who stop here.
- 1:59:38We'll give you good reason to stop here.
- 1:59:43Think of Rhodes as you soar.
- 1:59:46PhoneBase, the automatic answering service that records incoming messages.
- 1:59:49Gives your pre-recorded message to callers.
- 1:59:51Even lets you know who's calling without lifting the receiver.
- 1:59:53Perfect for home or office, just 139.50 at Rhodes, downtown, and Gateway.
- 1:59:57After the walk, a hard hit for all the Bulls, a walk to Morgan, and a single by Tolan.
- 2:00:02Putting in on first and third, and the right hand of Johnny Banks coming up first.
- 2:00:06Catcher Dean Tennes went out, shot to Vita Blue.
- 2:00:10Then Tennes was standing around talking, started back, and then Sal Vando came over to start the talk to Vita Blue.
- 2:00:17And then when the Empire of Milk Gunners started to wave him away, then Dick Williams came out, and all the while,
- 2:00:23Raleigh Fingers was warming up.
- 2:00:27So Blue, responsible for the two men on base, he worked a third of an inning, gave up a walk, and hit by far and away.
- 2:00:34His least impressive hit-beat performance in either a playoff series game or in a World Series.
- 2:00:44The scores 1-0 here in the Cincinnati 8.
- 2:00:48Running the base as well as Morgan took off, despite the fact he's had a bad foot,
- 2:00:53despite the fact that he pulled up limping noticeably when he was thrown out on the great play by Dick Green.
- 2:00:58Morgan Stewart from first to third, running on the one-out pitch to Bobby Cholum, which he lined up in the middle of center field.
- 2:01:06Raleigh Fingers who comes in connection with Morton comes on, and Fingers warms up.
- 2:01:11Fingers, like, well, you can name them on the Cincinnati ball club, I'm sure, and Jack Villingham was one of them.
- 2:01:17Fingers is one of those, and when he gets out there to throw, he is unaware of the importance of the pressure.
- 2:01:22He is aware of the situation.
- 2:01:24He is aware now that he's got Morgan at third and told on a very fast man at first save.
- 2:01:29He's aware, of course, that he's looking for the double play ball and the strikeout that Johnny meant.
- 2:01:34And Beck has been struck out in white by right-handers tonight, and those right-handers are the same man, John Bluebird Otis.
- 2:01:40First time up, John bounced to third, then he was called out looking at a fast ball of the fourth,
- 2:01:46and he was perhaps guessing fast ball of the sixth, and took a curve called strike three.
- 2:01:52Fingers who fixed them 65 games during the 1972 season.
- 2:01:59That is then very much an evidence for the World Tiers in playoff steps in with one out, then a first and third to fake Johnny Bent.
- 2:02:07Now, Robbie Fingers making his third appearance in the World Tirees.
- 2:02:11Bent goes for three, told and goes, and Bent swings on the first pitch and bounces straight back.
- 2:02:160-1-1. Fingers worked an inning and a third on Saturday. No runs in the hits came on on Sunday to face Fooley and Javier,
- 2:02:24with the tying run on base and retired Javier, the one man he faced to pick up the save and relief of Capsis Hunter.
- 2:02:31During the season, Fingers appeared in 65 games. He was 11-9, 21 saves, a 2-5-1 earned run average.
- 2:02:39The next pitch, Bent swings top to south, back to a deceitful amount of play in the counter zone two.
- 2:02:46Reds won, A's nothing, in the eighth. Gilmorgan is third, Bobby told him in first, one out.
- 2:02:56That scene is holding Tolan on. Campaneras and Kubiak are halfway.
- 2:03:01Fingers a step back of the bag and about six or seven feet off the line, the third. Perez on back.
- 2:03:11Fingers with a sign, Robbie set, and again over to first base.
- 2:03:21The rhythm started, blue in the eighth, working a third of an inning. And now Fingers. Dillon Hamer's done all the way for the red.
- 2:03:32The stretch and the sack to pick down the way. Breaking ball just missing, ball one.
- 2:03:37Tough pitch to lay off with two sacks, but Bent did it and he gets the call. One and two.
- 2:03:46Fingers in 65, Gaines is here most on the A staff.
- 2:03:53Robbie set, and again going over to first.
- 2:04:01Morgan a third, Tolan a first, one out of the eighth inning.
- 2:04:06Fingers at the belt. Here's a one-two, Tolan goes, Bent takes outside, Tennis drops the ball, and an uncontested steal for Tolan.
- 2:04:14So the reds running on Tennis pick up their third, Tolan base of the game.
- 2:04:19Rose stole second in the third. Geronimo stole in the fifth, and now Tolan. The count is two and two on Bent.
- 2:04:29The A's infield is now in on the right side. Campanera's halfway on the left side and Vando back of the bag a third.
- 2:04:40Fingers working out of his set. Here's a two-two pitch on the way. Got him swinging, but a foul tipped, and in and out of the glove of Tennis.
- 2:04:49He just got a piece of it. Foul tipped it and stays alive.
- 2:04:54For an instant it looked like fingers had been stuck out, but Geronimo just got a piece, stays alive, and the count remains two and two.
- 2:05:05Bench, Major League leader in home runs this year with 40, and it runs Vando in 125.
- 2:05:12Three for nine in the World Series. Here's a two-two pitch on the way, foul back again.
- 2:05:20One run, four hits, two errors for the reds. No runs, three hits, and two errors for the A's.
- 2:05:31Outfield deep and around toward left. Fingers with a sign from Tennis.
- 2:05:37The two-two on the way is outside. He comes in from the side, breaking pitch. Bench lays off, full count, and Williams wants to go to the mound.
- 2:05:48I was wondering there after Tolan suited on a second base whether or not fingers might be doing one of those intentional, unintentional walks.
- 2:05:58Allen with first base open. Maybe now they're discussing whether or not to put him on.
- 2:06:04The last couple of times he's thrown Johnny Curbs, one of which just missed for his called strike three.
- 2:06:09And it was a curve ball of which Tolan got the good jump and easily sold second base.
- 2:06:13A slow curve ball, Tennis had no chance to throw him out, and now with a count three and two and first base open, see what they've decided to do.
- 2:06:20When you've got two strikes on a guy like Bench, you want to see if you can get that third. Big man to get. Perez waiting on deck, both out.
- 2:06:28Downing Hall was thought to throw in the Cincinnati bullpen, and the pitch on the way to Bench called strike three.
- 2:06:35Am I wrong or did Tennis have us run out of it? He was calling for let's put him on base, but it did throw him Bench three.
- 2:06:50Johnny pulled on a pitch, now they're going to walk Perez intentionally. And get to Menke with first base open.
- 2:07:06Allen, you are so right. There's so many big plays in this ball game and another ball game.
- 2:07:12Pickoff play at second base does not work, but the back of Bench, I believe, thoroughly was decoyed.
- 2:07:17Tennis put his glove out, and then fingers blazed right down the middle for the call strike three.
- 2:07:26Perez will go to first base as soon as the intentional walk is issued, and Menke will come out.
- 2:07:32Most memorable game in the sense that I think when you go back and rehash it in a one to nothing game, it usually doesn't take a great deal of time to sum it up.
- 2:07:41And going back over this one, so many plays you could go back and talk about and think about and what might have been, what could have been.
- 2:07:51Most interesting one to nothing game I've ever seen.
- 2:07:57Bases loaded. Two down, Menke the batter, single, walk, sacrifice, and three appearances. Fingers to the plate and Menke takes outside.
- 2:08:11One and no the count. Morgan down the line from third. Bobby told him to wait from second.
- 2:08:22Tony Perez off from third. And the one oh pitch on the way. Menke fouls it straight back and the count one and one.
- 2:08:39One nothing red. Bases loaded. Two out. Eight and eight. One one pitch. Missing up and in ball two.
- 2:08:51Fingers is 26 years old. He's from Ohio, born in Steubenville, now makes his home in California in the town of Hewitt.
- 2:08:58Six four, one ninety five. Two one pitch. Popped foul off to the right out of play. Two and two.
- 2:09:06Fingers has been with the A's since the end of the 1968 season. Part-time starter in 1970, started 19 games.
- 2:09:16This year he worked exclusively from the bullpen. Two and two to go. The right hander ready. The two two pitch to Menke, swung on, fouled away again.
- 2:09:33The crowd tonight is 49,410. 49,410 for the first World Series game ever played at the Oakland Coliseum. Two two on the way. Swung on and fouled back.
- 2:09:47Straight back. Menke making fingers work as Robbie tries to work out of the jam. Reds leading one nothing.
- 2:10:03Straight away. In field back with two down. Fingers line. Two two on the way. Swung on, lifted in the air. Right side might be playable. Epstein coming over to the boxy railing has no play. Lands on top of the top as he decided to dive into the stands to make the play but can't come up with it.
- 2:10:23Good try by Epstein and he gets a nice hand. Very tough for Mike. Not only is he fighting the ball and the stands but that ground and foul territory is so soggy. Much soggier than the outfield there.
- 2:10:39And you can hardly make your way through it. It's like trying to walk through a swamp.
- 2:10:51Here's a two two pitch on the way. Menke sling, pops it in the air, foul ground right side. This time it is playable. Epstein is there with Kubiak and it's Kubiak for the count.
- 2:11:02Menke fouls out to the second baseman and fingers get out of the jam in the eighth inning. No runs, one hit, no errors. Reds lead three and at the end of seven and a half. Cincinnati one, Oakland nothing.
- 2:11:15This is Milo Hamilton. I call the play by play for the Atlanta Braves and I do the radio commercials for Delta, the official airline of the Braves.
- 2:11:23When I talk about Delta, well I speak from experience. Last month I flew more than 16,000 miles on Delta. It was a rugged schedule but the Delta people made it as smooth as anyone could ask for.
- 2:11:34Delta is an airline run by professionals, 24,000 professionals. Each highly skilled individual knows his job and gives it his best. That goes for the reservationist who confirms your space by DeltaMatic computer in three seconds, right onto the baggage handler who delivers your bags in an average time of seven minutes after you land.
- 2:11:53It's what Delta calls total service. I'd like to recommend Delta Airlines to you. And I have one other suggestion for people who travel, the American Express Money Card. You can even extend payment for your Delta tickets on the sign and fly plan.
- 2:12:08You're always ready to go with an American Express Money Card and Delta is ready when you are.
- 2:12:16They got out of the last of the eighth inning in the top of the open batting order. Some fans out there, the adjuvants of Cincinnati Reds having left the bases loaded, have thrown some streamers out into deep right center field.
- 2:12:29Could cause some trouble but then again nobody did one nearly that far tonight. As Alan and I have said, now so much as they're racing out and kind of as they cross the left field line, they're going out to pick up those streamers that are out there because somebody could have hit one out there and of course it could end up being a play.
- 2:12:45But then again what else does not happen in this ball game? Men have fallen down. That man who did fall down got up to score the only run of the ball game and the A's were not too alert.
- 2:12:55Johnny Benchapin has been decaught on the 3-2 pitch with men at second and third and was called out on strike. And there have been two errors by each team, two on one play by different men for the Cincinnati Reds.
- 2:13:07The Reds quite had men as far as third base before they scored a run. On the third time they got one that far. And then of course Oakland had a beautiful opportunity in the sixth inning when they had the bases loaded and only one out.
- 2:13:21They got Vando to ground into a double play. So it's one and nothing. It is the last of the eight. It is the top of the batting order. And again is out.
- 2:13:28All right Jim Campanaris leaves off. The Lew and Ernie will follow. Jack Sillingham in seven innings has allowed no runs. Three hits. He's blocked three. One of those an intentional walk and he was stuck out seven.
- 2:13:41Campanaris stuck out in the first. Grounded out in the third. Walked in the third. Right hand batters. Swing and shot to foul. 0-1. In the bullpen for the Reds. Left hander Tom Hall. Right hander Pedro Borbonas.
- 2:14:02Jack Sillingham to the plate. Campanaris another good foul. Off to the right. 0-2.
- 2:14:14Game four of the World Series tomorrow. Two left handers. John Gullick and Ken Holtzman. Back two pitch on the way. Outside ball one. Air time 8.20 each in time. Tomorrow night 5.20 out on the west coast. The Reds in the eighth.
- 2:14:32One two pitch. That is Chloe Dementia third. And he up with it. Goes to first in time. Campanaris is gone. One out of the eighth inning. Out live the batters. What sort of a man is Jack Sillingham?
- 2:14:45Well the Reds call him Rip for short. And that's short for Rip Van Winkle because he sleeps all the time. On planes, on the bus. Everywhere. Where's Sillingham when he's in his room sleeping? If you want him on the road. 10, 12. Up to 14 hours a day.
- 2:15:06Pitch on the way. In first strike. 0-1. He's that relaxed. 0-1 pitch on the way. Breaking ball down. Low 1-1. Crowd tonight 49,410. That's a new attendance record for a baseball game at the Oakland Commiseum.
- 2:15:271-1 pitch. He's hit foul off to the right. 1-2. This is also a football park. Home of the Oakland Raiders of the NFL. And they play here on Sunday. And we'll play here again this coming Sunday.
- 2:15:39So a busy week for the ground through it. All the rain and the World Series and a couple of football games. 1-2 pitch is down and up the line toward first base. It is a foul ball. Just barely foul. Now Lou, remained at the plate. Never even ran toward first base. And it almost cost him because Sillingham came over to try to field the ball.
- 2:16:01And Perez was down with Jack and it just did roll foul. But Perez got to it. Could have been a most embarrassing situation for Lou. Rudy waits on that. And he's close to the bag of third.
- 2:16:231-2 pitch on the way. He's down to the short on three hops fielded by Chaney. Throws, gets him. Two down. But Sillingham has done tonight what he has to do. Kept the ball down. Everybody's been hitting the ball on the ground. Very few balls hitting the air tonight.
- 2:16:39He's a thinker, flatter pitcher. Relies on control. And tonight he has been at his very, very best.
- 2:16:59Joe Rudy the batter. Stuck out in the first. Singled in the fourth. Grounded out in the sixth. Sillingham to the plate. Ocstein ball one. 1-0.
- 2:17:21Reds leading 1-0. In the eighth inning two out faces empty. 1-0 pitch on the way. Line foul right side. Down into the corner. Back of the bullpen. 1-1.
- 2:17:35Mike Epstein waiting on that. The Reds one run four hits two errors. The A's no runs three hits and two errors.
- 2:17:50Sillingham into his lineup. 1-1 pitch on the way. Just missing outside. 2-1. Sillingham from Florida.
- 2:17:59Has a home down there but he also bought a home in Cincinnati. He's going to spend his first winter in the north this year living in Cincinnati. Never seen snow before.
- 2:18:08He'll get a chance. Jack Reddy and a 2-1 pitch on the way. He's lifted foul down the right field line. Back out of play. 2-2.
- 2:18:24Rudy one for three tonight. Three for ten in the series. 5-3-0-5 during the year. Led the American League in hits.
- 2:18:3319 home runs. Reds playing them around toward right. Makes you very close to the line at third. Cutting down the chances of an extra base hit.
- 2:18:442-2 pitch on the way. Capsule. Reds leading 1-0 with a run in the seventh. Perez a single. He was sacrificed a second and then scored on a single by Geronimo despite falling down as he rounded third.
- 2:19:042-2 on Rudy. Sillingham ready in the 2-2 pitch. Breaking ball. Grounded to Manke at third. Dave Riddick straightens up and gets him to retire to size.
- 2:19:15Campanera, Sallou and Rudy down one, two, three in the eighth. No runs, no hits and nobody left. The Reds come up in the ninth with the score. Cincinnati one, Oakland nothing.

- 2:20:11Everybody likes it, everybody likes it, everybody likes it, everybody likes it, everybody likes it.
- 2:20:25This is K3W in Portland at 748.
- 2:20:31All in our Michael's-Ginn-Cincinn-this one to nothing ball game. It's the 7-8-9 hitters for the Cincinnati Reds who lead one to nothing in the ball game.
- 2:20:38In the ball game and then when they go to the last of the night, this course should be the same.
- 2:20:43Revenmint should be knocked the same.
- 2:20:45It is up to Bando and Henrich.
- 2:20:47The last gap for the A's trying to go three games up.
- 2:20:50Reds are coming back here though.
- 2:20:52They saw Geronimo lead drop and pop the foul off to the left out of play.
- 2:20:56It was Geronimo who drove in.
- 2:20:58They only run in the game in the seventh inning.
- 2:21:01He's singled the drive in to Rez.
- 2:21:03It's one to nothing, Cincinnati as the Reds try to close the gap.
- 2:21:07A's won the first two games in the series.
- 2:21:09The Reds trying to take game three.
- 2:21:11As Geronimo takes it in the strike, it's an easy count on two.
- 2:21:15Blake Carroll works in the Reds bullpen.
- 2:21:19Bob Locker and Dave Hamilton work in the Oakland pen.
- 2:21:26Here's their strike two pitch on the way, missing up high, ball one.
- 2:21:30Chaney on back.
- 2:21:33Geronimo one for three tonight.
- 2:21:35One for Ken in the World Series.
- 2:21:39Singer's ready, back to the plate, breaking pitch, foul by.
- 2:21:44One and two.
- 2:21:46Don Gullick for the Reds, Ken Holtzman for the A's tomorrow.
- 2:21:50Game four, game five if necessary, a day game.
- 2:21:53One o'clock coast time on Friday.
- 2:21:57One two pitch, flung on foul, pipped into tennis and glove.
- 2:22:01Singers get their second strikeout, Geronimo the 13th red to strike out tonight.
- 2:22:07Odom had 11 in seven innings.
- 2:22:10Here's Darrell Chaney, struck out twice and flat out.
- 2:22:140 for three, 0 for five in the series.
- 2:22:20Hit 250 during the year.
- 2:22:24Singers to the plate, a strike.
- 2:22:26Chaney used to be a flick hitter, but about halfway through this season
- 2:22:29he decided to just hit left handed.
- 2:22:33Now having his problems, he wanted to concentrate on just one side of the plate.
- 2:22:38Next pitch inside, he's got nice to get away, one and one.
- 2:22:44Sillingham will be up next.
- 2:22:51Singers back to the plate, Chaney takes a breaking ball down low.
- 2:22:55Two and one.
- 2:23:07The right hander ready and a two one touchdown away.
- 2:23:10Chaney swings and golfs it on the ground.
- 2:23:12Epstein is first, he stays with it, steps down the bag.
- 2:23:15He almost got caught between hots.
- 2:23:17Two down.
- 2:23:21Back Sillingham, coming up for the red.
- 2:23:26And gets a fine hand he's put on some shows through eight innings tonight.
- 2:23:37As a hitter, he has rounded out and struck out twice.
- 2:23:48Singers ready, comes to the plate, Sillingham fouls it back.
- 2:23:51Now when the A's come up in the bottom of the ninth, the four, five and six hitters,
- 2:23:55Epstein, Vandal and Hendrick.
- 2:24:01Oh one pick outside, count even, one and one.
- 2:24:05Two out, base is empty, top of the ninth inning, one to nothing Cincinnati.
- 2:24:12Here's a one one pick, long on and missed, one and two.
- 2:24:23Singers winds, one two to Sillingham, calls strike three.
- 2:24:26And that retires the shot as Sillingham becomes the fourteenth strikeout pick tonight.
- 2:24:32Odom with eleven, Singers with three and the Reds out one two three in the ninth.
- 2:24:36So the Oakland A's come up in the bottom of the ninth inning with the score.
- 2:24:40Cincinnati one, open nothing.
- 2:24:43Hello this is Johnny Vance speaking for ANCO Windshield wipers.
- 2:24:46Back before I was playing for the Reds I always thought the right fielder had the best position on the team.
- 2:24:51All he does is stand there waiting for an occasional high fly.
- 2:24:55But you know right fielder can be like the windshield wipers on your car.
- 2:24:58They don't do anything either until some rain comes their way.
- 2:25:01But boy do they have to hustle then.
- 2:25:04A rain storm or a snow storm, clean wiping ANCO windshield wipers or snow blades can save your life.
- 2:25:10But wipers like ball players eventually get old.
- 2:25:13Over a period of time the sun, winds and air pollution gets to them and the rubber gradually deteriorates.
- 2:25:19And they really get aches and pains.
- 2:25:21If your wipers are over six months old, man they could be over the hill and going into a permanent swamp.
- 2:25:27So the thing to do is drench them.
- 2:25:29Drive into any service station where you see the bright yellow ANCO service cabinet
- 2:25:33and tell the man you want a fresh new pair of ANCO windshield wipers.
- 2:25:37That's ANCO by Anderson.
- 2:25:39Definitely major league.
- 2:25:41Well it's all been one run ball game.
- 2:25:47Three to two and two to one at Cincinnati after the rain delay yesterday
- 2:25:50when a very bizarre one to nothing game tonight.
- 2:25:53Epstein, Vando and Hendrick.
- 2:25:57Mike Epstein left hand batter, walked in the second,
- 2:26:01walked out in the fourth, threw an intentional walk in the sixth.
- 2:26:04Jack Fillingham has gone all the way in his first pitch for a breaking ball down low.
- 2:26:08Ball one.
- 2:26:09In the bullpen for the red.
- 2:26:11Left hander Tom Hall, right hander Clay Carroll.
- 2:26:15Fillingham ready, back he comes.
- 2:26:17Epstein takes down low.
- 2:26:18Ball two to a no.
- 2:26:22Fillingham has walked three.
- 2:26:24One unintentional walk has struck out seven.
- 2:26:27He's allowed just three balls to be hit out of the infield.
- 2:26:31All fly balls to Toven and Center.
- 2:26:34Two open, outside ball three.
- 2:26:37Three and oh.
- 2:26:40Flakey Anderson is now going to the mound.
- 2:26:43First time tonight that Anderson has made his way out there.
- 2:26:46Dennis Minkie and Johnny Banks will join the top run.
- 2:26:51The manager making an appearance as he chats with Fillingham will pause 30 seconds for station identification.
- 2:26:59This is KGW in Portland, Oregon, 754.
- 2:27:02When you think of great football authority, who do you think of?
- 2:27:06Howard Cosell, Richard M. Nixon.
- 2:27:09Well most people put their money on Jimmy the Greek.
- 2:27:12The king of the Las Vegas oddsmakers will be back in the Oregonian again this fall.
- 2:27:17Twice a week Jimmy will predict the outcome and the point spread for all the major college and professional football games.
- 2:27:23Call the Oregonian at 226-2121 and have Jimmy the Greek delivered to your door.
- 2:27:32Along with Sal Michaels, this is Jim Simpson and to continue the Bazaar,
- 2:27:37one-to-nothing third game of the World Series.
- 2:27:40Fillingham has just been superb, only in real trouble.
- 2:27:44When errors helped set up that trouble back in the sixth inning, he goes 3-0 on Alina Petarevskina and that's all for Josh Fillingham.
- 2:27:51And on comes Clay Carroll about whom I know he set a record of saves for the Major Leagues of 37,
- 2:27:56but now you're divorced with the Reds and you know a lot more about Clay Carroll than I.
- 2:28:01Clay Carroll had a tremendous season.
- 2:28:03There was really no point during the season when he was ineffective.
- 2:28:06He would have maybe a couple of outings in a row where he would not necessarily do the job.
- 2:28:12But over the course of the season, he was about as consistent as any pitcher in the league,
- 2:28:18certainly any relief pitcher in the National League, setting a Major League record with 37 saves.
- 2:28:23He appeared in 65 games.
- 2:28:25Dow had a record of 6-4 and a 2.25 earned run average in 96th innings.
- 2:28:31He walked 32 and struck out 51.
- 2:28:34So he comes in with a top three ball, no strikes on Mike Epstein.
- 2:28:40Get on, no doubt we will see a pink runner.
- 2:28:43Sal Bando is on deck.
- 2:28:45The Reds are on top 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:28:49Pedro Borbon takes Cal's place now in the bullpen, joining Tommy Hall, the left-hander.
- 2:28:55Cal has finished warming up.
- 2:28:58He's known as the hawking Cincinnati because of his facial features.
- 2:29:05And he looks in and takes his side.
- 2:29:07A 3-0 pick, a strike, 3-1.
- 2:29:10Cal in the 1970 World Series, worked nine innings in relief, allowed no runs.
- 2:29:16Here's a 3-1 pitch on the way, swung on, grounded to Morgan, a second.
- 2:29:20He stays with it, goes the first, one away.
- 2:29:23So Clay Cal comes on to do the job with a top 3-0.
- 2:29:27Epstein takes the strike and then rolls off to Morgan.
- 2:29:30One away, Bando the batter.
- 2:29:34Cal is making his second appearance in the World Series this year.
- 2:29:39Worked two innings Saturday, no runs, no hits, two walks, one strikeout.
- 2:29:45Bando takes the strike, 0-1.
- 2:29:47Sal Bando, bunted into a four-shot, struck out, hit into a double play, 0-3.
- 2:29:531-11 in the World Series, looks for the slider away, 1-1.
- 2:30:01Hendrick is on deck.
- 2:30:05The next pitch is low and outside, ball two.
- 2:30:09Turn to one to count.
- 2:30:13Dave Hamilton throwing in the Oakland fan.
- 2:30:18Reds one, A's nothing, one out, bases empty, bottom of the ninth.
- 2:30:26Allen and his lineup, two-one pitch on the way, swung on a line drive right at Morgan, two down.
- 2:30:34So Bando is gone.
- 2:30:36And the Reds are one out away from picking up their first victory in the series.
- 2:30:41George Hendrick coming up for Oakland.
- 2:30:46Hendrick, hopped out in a second, struck out in a fifth, slide out in a seventh.
- 2:30:51Time is stars, some fans coming out onto the field.
- 2:30:58And Youngfella slides into second, followed by, looks like his twin brother.
- 2:31:06And they will spend a pleasant night at one of Oakland's not-too-fine establishments.
- 2:31:20No resistance, they were not abrasive at all, they simply slid into second base.
- 2:31:25And as the us's came over, they shook hands with them and they're a little away.
- 2:31:28Play back in, Hendrick the batter, takes out side ball one, one and oh.
- 2:31:36On deck is Dean Tennis.
- 2:31:38Now ready, back he comes, the pitch is a set swing and a tie.
- 2:31:42And he's touching down, ball two, two and oh.
- 2:31:48Two out, bases empty, bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:31:52Carroll ready, here's the two, Oakland swung on, nubbed up the line toward first base.
- 2:31:56Carroll has it, looks to Perez and the Reds beat the A's.
- 2:31:59Ray Carroll gets the save, Jack Fillingham the win.
- 2:32:03The A's go down one, two, three in the ninth.
- 2:32:05And Oakland now leads in the World Series, two games to one.
- 2:32:09As the Cincinnati Reds defeat the Oakland A's, the final score.
- 2:32:13The Pinks are adding one, Oakland nothing.
- 2:32:19John Blue Moon Odom is the loser tonight, giving up the only run of the ballgame in the seventh inning.
- 2:32:25And Jack Fillingham with superb help from Clay Carroll in the ninth is the winning pitcher.
- 2:32:30Fillingham allowed no runs of course, only three hits.
- 2:32:34He stuck out seven and walked three and when he went to three and oh on the leadoff batter in the ninth inning,
- 2:32:39Marky Anderson went to his bullpen and Clay Carroll who got up,
- 2:32:43stood on the ground out, banned on the soft line drive,
- 2:32:46there's a short stop and Hendrick ground about the end of all.
- 2:32:49Back to that seventh inning, the last inning worked by Odom losing the pitcher.
- 2:32:54Perez went off on the ground, singled that field.
- 2:32:57Menke laid down the perfect sacrifice, Perez going to second base.
- 2:33:01Then Geronimo singled a short center field.
- 2:33:04In short, Hendrick picked up the ball, Perez was rounding third base and fell down.
- 2:33:10And Hendrick apparently fell, but Perez would score.
- 2:33:13And so he just lazily threw the ball into Dick Green.
- 2:33:17Green the cutoff man at second base, knocked Odom and Perez had fallen down.
- 2:33:21Nor did any of his teammates know who it was, or at least he didn't hear them.
- 2:33:25So he didn't turn around and throw home and Perez scored the only run of the ballgame.
- 2:33:29But Al Michaels in summing up, that's not all that happened in this one-to-nothing ballgame.
- 2:33:35For example, Johnny Bench with two men on base and one out being decoyed on a 3-2 count thinking
- 2:33:41perhaps it was going to be ball for intentionally and he took a call strike down the middle.
- 2:33:46So many things happened and as you, I'm going to use your word, it was a bizarre one-to-nothing victory,
- 2:33:51but nevertheless the Cincinnati Reds are back in the World Series, trailing now two games to one.
