- 3:36Speaker 3: forty seven dollars even transportation and all the incidentals I
- 3:39Speaker 3: could think of Hertford, Connecticut to Georgetown, South Carolina. It
- 3:42Speaker 3: am to a dollar for a cab to Continental's office
- 3:45Speaker 3: on Screven Street.
- 3:46Speaker 6: Hi Dollar, I'm Joe Pigotella, glad to see you sit
- 3:50Speaker 6: on Thanks.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Now, look, Joe, before we go into this mata, there's
- 3:54Speaker 3: something I'd like to know. I'll ask you just what
- 3:57Speaker 3: are you doing in the insurance business.
- 3:59Speaker 6: Look, you remember back in New York, just before Tom
- 4:01Speaker 6: Dewey took over his DA, the great Holy Racketbuster.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm sure you do.
- 4:06Speaker 6: Okay, Well, I was just a young punk then, but
- 4:09Speaker 6: I was a bright one, ambitious, you know, finished up
- 4:11Speaker 6: my high school, started taking law.
- 4:13Speaker 3: You studied law? Why not?
- 4:15Speaker 6: I could have cleaned up, you know, mouthpiece for some
- 4:18Speaker 6: of the mob, some of the boys I knocked around with.
- 4:20Speaker 7: But then Dewey came along.
- 4:21Speaker 6: Broke up the rackets, so I gave it up to
- 4:23Speaker 6: do what y'all? Oh, you know, this is that Chicago
- 4:27Speaker 6: for a while with some of the boys al Capone
- 4:28Speaker 6: left behind and down here. The bordered San Diego for
- 4:31Speaker 6: a while, looking narcotics across from Mexico. Then some of
- 4:35Speaker 6: us tried to Las Vegas. We didn't get any What
- 4:37Speaker 6: was that crack? Well, listen, I'm clean. Make a crack
- 4:41Speaker 6: like that.
- 4:41Speaker 7: You can prove it.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Okay, if you can't, don't say it. You were telling
- 4:45Speaker 3: me how you got into the insurance business, all right,
- 4:48Speaker 3: when I'm taking you on this case, don't talk like that.
- 4:51Speaker 3: The gent's idea was don't like it and don't forget
- 4:54Speaker 3: whatever you think about them. You could also be run okay,
- 4:57Speaker 3: y'all two kinds of wrong dollar just playing and dead wrong.
- 5:02Speaker 6: You see what I mean? All right, as I was
- 5:04Speaker 6: saying how I got in this insurance racket, as you
- 5:07Speaker 6: were saying, well, some of the boys from New York
- 5:09Speaker 6: and chicagoing around did pretty good. Instead of blown all
- 5:11Speaker 6: their dough on booze and dames and big times, they
- 5:14Speaker 6: were smart. They least to old plantation up in the
- 5:16Speaker 6: valley north of here on a Pee River, the Old
- 5:19Speaker 6: Carroway Plantation. It's right next to the town of Virtu.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Great name for a hideout. I'll say that.
- 5:24Speaker 6: I didn't say hideout, dollar. It was just a nice
- 5:27Speaker 6: quiet place where they could live. It up in a
- 5:29Speaker 6: nice quiet way. And at the same time they wouldn't
- 5:32Speaker 6: have any cops around their neck.
- 5:33Speaker 3: No police and virtue.
- 5:35Speaker 7: Nobody but Old poly Carroway.
- 5:37Speaker 6: Anyhow, after six eight months had taken an easy mint
- 5:39Speaker 6: julips and hunting and fishing instead of being on the
- 5:42Speaker 6: lamb all the time. Well, Johnny, you wouldn't believe it.
- 5:45Speaker 3: What do you mean?
- 5:45Speaker 7: Well, they all settled down at it spend the rest
- 5:47Speaker 7: of their life.
- 5:48Speaker 6: They all went respectable, every last one of them.
- 5:52Speaker 3: You sure that?
- 5:53Speaker 6: Who has been twenty years now? Can you be any
- 5:55Speaker 6: more sure than there?
- 5:56Speaker 3: I don't know, But go on with what you were saying.
- 6:00Speaker 7: All right.
- 6:01Speaker 6: I got an idea. I signed up with this little
- 6:03Speaker 6: insurance company. Then I went up to vite you and
- 6:05Speaker 6: made the pitch. They were all respectable. Now they got
- 6:08Speaker 6: to make like respectable people and cover themselves with a
- 6:10Speaker 6: lot of insurance.
- 6:11Speaker 3: And it worked.
- 6:12Speaker 7: Now you remember Lefty Stemper.
- 6:13Speaker 3: The old time numbers came for Chicago, right.
- 6:16Speaker 6: Booky slot machines, everything, oh, pal of mine. So when
- 6:19Speaker 6: he told the rest he was buying insurance, well, Johnny,
- 6:22Speaker 6: I got policies on every one of them. The rest
- 6:24Speaker 6: of the town too, on their life, their homes, everything.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Okay, now let's get to the point. What's happened up
- 6:29Speaker 3: there on Virtue trouble? Johnny, old man carroway for me,
- 6:33Speaker 3: what kind of trouble? Now?
- 6:35Speaker 6: Twenty years now, the boys and the people in Virtue
- 6:37Speaker 6: have been getting along fine. The boys been behaving themselves,
- 6:40Speaker 6: and the people in town are all nice people.
- 6:43Speaker 7: Until a couple of weeks ago.
- 6:44Speaker 3: What happened?
- 6:45Speaker 6: Billy Magoon had himself a nice little fishing boat, had
- 6:47Speaker 6: it ever since he went straight and moved in up
- 6:49Speaker 6: there twenty years ago.
- 6:51Speaker 7: Now somebody stole it.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Well, why don't you just pay off his claim and
- 6:54Speaker 3: forget it.
- 6:55Speaker 7: Listen.
- 6:55Speaker 6: A couple of days after that, mister Avery that runs
- 6:57Speaker 6: the general store and Virtue had his boat stolen.
- 7:00Speaker 3: So you'll have to pay another claim, but small ones, Joe,
- 7:02Speaker 3: would you listen?
- 7:04Speaker 6: Ever since then, not a day has gone by that
- 7:06Speaker 6: somebody hasn't had something stolen from him. Mostly the people
- 7:09Speaker 6: invite you boats, cars, money, financial, anything you can think of.
- 7:14Speaker 6: The people blame the boys, and the boys blame the people,
- 7:17Speaker 6: and Johnny, there's going to be a civil war virtue
- 7:19Speaker 6: unless somebody finds out who's doing this, and if that happens,
- 7:22Speaker 6: there's going to be a lot of killing. And well,
- 7:24Speaker 6: with all the insurance I've saw, me and the company
- 7:26Speaker 6: are going to be in trouble.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Well, can't you get the state police to come in?
- 7:29Speaker 7: State police invite you?
- 7:31Speaker 3: You said it's a real respectable community.
- 7:33Speaker 6: Now, yeah, sure it is, but well Dragon im in
- 7:36Speaker 6: might really start things off it. That's why I had
- 7:38Speaker 6: to send for you.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Look, why don't we go up there so I can
- 7:41Speaker 3: see for myself?
- 7:42Speaker 6: Sure, Johnny, Sure, but hey, or open your cut. I mean,
- 7:47Speaker 6: if you're going to take along that lemon squeezer, we'll
- 7:49Speaker 6: take my advice.
- 7:50Speaker 7: And don't you have.
- 7:52Speaker 3: A pretty sure eye, Joe.
- 7:53Speaker 6: Johnny bag and spoder shoulder Hols a mile away that's
- 7:57Speaker 6: taking some of the boys up in the valley on
- 7:58Speaker 6: the plantation.
- 8:00Speaker 7: I don't want you to end up with a slug
- 8:01Speaker 7: between your eye.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Real respectable people, Well, shall we go on my cast
- 8:06Speaker 3: outside into the Valley of Death Road, the six hundred,
- 8:10Speaker 3: at least a couple of them. What are you talking about, nothing, Joel,
- 8:13Speaker 3: Let's go.
- 8:18Speaker 5: Act two of Yours, Truly, Johnny Dollar in a moment.
- 8:22Speaker 8: Our flag now numbers fifty stars, and behind each star
- 8:26Speaker 8: there stands yet another flag, representing one of the fifty states.
- 8:30Speaker 8: Florida State flag bears the red Cross of Saint Andrew
- 8:33Speaker 8: in sympathy with the flag of the Confederacy on a
- 8:36Speaker 8: field of white. Centered over the cross is the state
- 8:39Speaker 8: seal within a golden circle. The sun, an emblem of
- 8:43Speaker 8: glory and splendor representing absolute authority, peers over a highland.
- 8:47Speaker 8: In the distance. Flowers, a symbol of hope and joy,
- 8:51Speaker 8: are scattered by an Indian maiden, indicative of the Indian
- 8:54Speaker 8: influence within the state. Centered is the coco or palm tree,
- 8:59Speaker 8: an emblem of the three justice and royal honor. Florida
- 9:03Speaker 8: State flag, the flag of the twenty seventh state to
- 9:06Speaker 8: enter the Union, was adopted in nineteen hundred.
- 9:10Speaker 5: And now Act two of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar and
- 9:13Speaker 5: the Village of Virtue matter.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Joe Piccateello arstwhile gangster turned insurance agent led me out
- 9:22Speaker 3: to his car and we headed north out of Georgetown,
- 9:24Speaker 3: South Carolina. After twenty miles or so, we swung onto
- 9:27Speaker 3: a side road paralleling the Peedee River, and finally we
- 9:31Speaker 3: came to the old Carroway Plantation. Acres and acres of
- 9:34Speaker 3: huge old live oak trees festooned with Spanish moss flowers,
- 9:38Speaker 3: millions of them, Stadias iris roses rhododendron bushes, a flame
- 9:43Speaker 3: with color in the afternoon sun. Then at the end
- 9:46Speaker 3: of a broad pre lined path, the fine old colonial
- 9:49Speaker 3: mansion with its towering colors. The property faced the curving,
- 9:53Speaker 3: lazy yellow river, and lying across it was a broad
- 9:56Speaker 3: expanse of marshy grass, criss crossed here and there by
- 9:58Speaker 3: canals through which the and olden times haul the rice
- 10:01Speaker 3: crop of the river boats. Yeah, it was a beautiful spot,
- 10:05Speaker 3: a calm, quiet, peaceful spot. Currently, well here we are, Johnny.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Let's go in and see if anybody pumps.
- 10:14Speaker 6: Hey, hey, hold it, hold at your pumps.
- 10:17Speaker 3: It's me, smoky o god, who else?
- 10:20Speaker 7: Put both guns away? You want to get in trouble,
- 10:23Speaker 7: won't you?
- 10:24Speaker 9: Guys?
- 10:24Speaker 10: No better to come passing in this way?
- 10:26Speaker 3: We all know your coming. Come on, Johnny, sure, nice
- 10:30Speaker 3: peaceful spot. Huh.
- 10:32Speaker 9: Who's that you got with your smoky boys.
- 10:35Speaker 6: This is Johnny Dollar. He's from the insurance company, Johnny.
- 10:39Speaker 6: This is Boumagoon.
- 10:40Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 10:41Speaker 7: Hi, And this is Leftys Temper.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Hi, Johnny Dollar and the shrimp. There is slippy lack
- 10:46Speaker 3: of itch. Hi, Johnny, I'm please to patch away.
- 10:51Speaker 2: What did you bring here?
- 10:52Speaker 3: Smoky your dick or something? Yeah, dolla? What's the idea
- 10:54Speaker 3: of packing a ride? All right? All right, let him go,
- 10:58Speaker 3: you guy.
- 10:59Speaker 7: Yeah, he's on our side.
- 11:01Speaker 6: He's up here to find the stuff that's been stolen.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Yeah, we don't need no outside help. Oh, you've found
- 11:08Speaker 3: who's behind the thefts? I, Lefty, No, if it's your business,
- 11:12Speaker 3: my business. You're interrupting me.
- 11:14Speaker 10: Yeah, Dollar shutter, I say, we'll find out who's coming
- 11:17Speaker 10: over here and fight you and taking our stuff ourselves,
- 11:20Speaker 10: and when we do, we'll eliminate it right back to
- 11:23Speaker 10: the old days.
- 11:24Speaker 3: Huh.
- 11:25Speaker 11: If we've got to to protect our rights by letting
- 11:28Speaker 11: me have my gun, well here to flippy.
- 11:32Speaker 6: You wants this gun, You make a move the dollar
- 11:36Speaker 6: and I'll flip yourself fast.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Oh you mean like this? Hey, Hey, hey, you just
- 11:42Speaker 3: flippy gut whip.
- 11:44Speaker 7: By Johnny Ship.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Johnny Dollar. You're okay? Anybody else want to get smarty?
- 11:52Speaker 3: Can you cut me off of the good Guard expert Flippy? Well,
- 11:56Speaker 3: you ain't any more, I'll afty, I'll take my gun.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Oh sure, yeah, yeah, yeah, okay, Jenny. All right, now
- 12:05Speaker 3: let's get things straight. I'm not the cops, but I'll
- 12:07Speaker 3: drag them in if necessary. Oh no, listen, you'll listen.
- 12:10Speaker 3: I'm gonna try to stop what's going on around here,
- 12:12Speaker 3: and if anyone of your interferes, I'll have you locked
- 12:13Speaker 3: up so fast you want know what's happened to you?
- 12:15Speaker 3: Oh wait a minute, I'll listen to me, will you
- 12:17Speaker 3: a dollar? Well? Look, I guess we're all kind of shaky,
- 12:23Speaker 3: you know we well, we were.
- 12:26Speaker 11: Sort of somewhat upset by the events in the past
- 12:30Speaker 11: couple of weeks or two, you know what I mean.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Left the Joe told me that if the burglaries, robberies,
- 12:36Speaker 3: whatever they are, go want much longer, there's not able
- 12:38Speaker 3: to be a war between you and the people of
- 12:39Speaker 3: the town.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Oh, he ain't worried.
- 12:41Speaker 10: Now, we got enough Guncinamo stashed the way around.
- 12:43Speaker 3: The shut up. Well, yeah, yeah, sure, I'm sure you have.
- 12:47Speaker 3: But if you ever expect to make peace again with
- 12:48Speaker 3: the townspeople, if you expect to stay on here, we.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Got at least fifteen years ago.
- 12:55Speaker 11: Okay, all right, Look all we got here is Honting
- 13:00Speaker 11: rifles and were shotguns and a couple of pistols in
- 13:04Speaker 11: case of snake. You know, while we're hunting the fish
- 13:06Speaker 11: in here in the swamps, a lot of cotton mouse
- 13:09Speaker 11: around here.
- 13:09Speaker 7: You know, that's the fact, Johnny.
- 13:11Speaker 3: The point is I didn't come here without providing for
- 13:13Speaker 3: any and every exigency. What what what what's that mean?
- 13:18Speaker 3: By what a dope? It means if anything happens to him,
- 13:22Speaker 3: we're dead. Ain't that Excuseuly? Isn't that right? Dollar?
- 13:28Speaker 2: Right?
- 13:29Speaker 3: You see? Now, give me a hand. Cooperate with me
- 13:32Speaker 3: and maybe we can play this thing up. Don't And
- 13:34Speaker 3: I have only one alternative.
- 13:37Speaker 9: What's that mean?
- 13:38Speaker 3: Shut up? And that's to have you legally ousted from
- 13:41Speaker 3: here out of the state if necessary. Oh, I looked, Uh,
- 13:44Speaker 3: will cooperate now, I don't mind telling you. We love
- 13:47Speaker 3: this place. Look, it's the only real home. We got
- 13:51Speaker 3: Flippy and Sadie, we got Bull and Mary and me
- 13:53Speaker 3: and Nora.
- 13:55Speaker 11: Maybe maybe we got records all right, our some of
- 13:58Speaker 11: us maybe did time for some of the little jobs
- 14:00Speaker 11: we pulled.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Huh. But we've been playing it straight since we come here,
- 14:03Speaker 3: all along the lines. Like I told you, Johnny Earnest,
- 14:07Speaker 3: that's the way we want to keep it. If the
- 14:10Speaker 3: people all virtue will just leave us keep it that way.
- 14:13Speaker 11: And you know something, I don't get it, don't get
- 14:17Speaker 11: we left over twenty years everything's been nice and okay,
- 14:21Speaker 11: huh now they got to stop this.
- 14:23Speaker 3: What about the losses they've suffered? They asked me dollar
- 14:26Speaker 3: their phone used to cover up for Robin our stuff.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Nobody asked you. Maybe they think the same way about
- 14:31Speaker 3: your losses. Huh. Yeah. Now where's the owner of this place,
- 14:38Speaker 3: Sir Carroway? Oh yeah, he's over in vit you in
- 14:40Speaker 3: his office office. Sure, he's a million and a police
- 14:43Speaker 3: all right, Joe and I are going over to see him,
- 14:46Speaker 3: Johnny Smoky, Well you please don't go. They see you
- 14:49Speaker 3: guys coming from here, they're gonna take a shot at you.
- 14:51Speaker 3: That Carowa told me so, yeah, sure take that chance.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Come on, Joe, Well I'll tell you, Johnny tell me
- 14:57Speaker 3: along the way, come on, the more I thought about
- 15:03Speaker 3: the whole thing, a sillier at all seemed. Yeah, it
- 15:06Speaker 3: was obvious that even after twenty years, Lefty and Bull
- 15:09Speaker 3: and Flippy might think of only one way to settle
- 15:12Speaker 3: their problems with a gun. And if the people of
- 15:14Speaker 3: Virtue were feeling the same way, what as Joe and
- 15:17Speaker 3: I walked along the main, the only street of the
- 15:19Speaker 3: little town, there were those signs of hostility or even
- 15:21Speaker 3: suspicion toward us.
- 15:23Speaker 6: Now, look, Johnny, if those bums back at the plantation
- 15:26Speaker 6: and making this trouble, why why would they Joe what
- 15:30Speaker 6: I don't get, but why if they don't like you're interfering,
- 15:33Speaker 6: it decided to knock you off.
- 15:34Speaker 3: And I'll probably go to my grave on more and unremembered.
- 15:37Speaker 6: Yeah, but you're to a Lefty. You'd provided for every
- 15:39Speaker 6: exegen well for if anything should.
- 15:42Speaker 7: Happen to you.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Yeah, And he and the boys believed it.
- 15:45Speaker 7: And if anything does the huh Yeah, all I can hope.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Is that they keep on believing.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Act three of yours truly, Johnny Dollar.
- 16:04Speaker 12: In a moment, sometimes a quotation is a helpful thing
- 16:08Speaker 12: because it points out some wisdom that helps us to
- 16:10Speaker 12: lead better lives. Here's one that struck me as being
- 16:13Speaker 12: very wise and true, Doctor Samuel Johnson. That wise and
- 16:17Speaker 12: witty man immortalized by Boswell said, quote, it matters not
- 16:22Speaker 12: how a man dies, but how he lives.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Unquote.
- 16:26Speaker 12: A man's life may be long or short, but the
- 16:28Speaker 12: way he lives it is the important thing. It's important
- 16:31Speaker 12: no matter what he does. They have integrity, loyalty, and
- 16:35Speaker 12: honor and a sound code of conduct. Enlisting at the
- 16:40Speaker 12: age of seventeen with his parents' permission, Corporal Charles L.
- 16:45Speaker 12: Gelenon found himself soon after his eighteenth birthday in a
- 16:48Speaker 12: narrow defile in the middle of the treacherous, rocky terrain
- 16:51Speaker 12: of Tongueman Knee Correa.
- 16:54Speaker 3: At two thirty a m.
- 16:55Speaker 12: That moonlit morning of April twenty fifth, nineteen fifty one,
- 16:59Speaker 12: Corporal Galian's Army Unit, Company Eye, seventh Infantry Regimental Combat
- 17:04Speaker 12: Team of the third Division became the focal point of
- 17:07Speaker 12: a murderous assault from Chinese Communist forces. The fighting became
- 17:11Speaker 12: brutal and bloody. The brunt of the attack was directed
- 17:15Speaker 12: up to defile guarded by Gililand with his automatic rifle.
- 17:18Speaker 12: The slashing barrage of small arms, automatic weapons, motor and
- 17:21Speaker 12: artillery fire was dropping the men all around him. Geliland
- 17:25Speaker 12: faced the full force of the assault, and, advancing against
- 17:29Speaker 12: tremendous ods, poured a steady fire into the attacking forces
- 17:33Speaker 12: and eventually halted him. For valiant and heroic conduct, Corporal
- 17:38Speaker 12: Charles Gilliland was awarded the Medal of Honor. Although in
- 17:42Speaker 12: age he still may have been considered a boy, he
- 17:45Speaker 12: had lived and died like a man.
- 17:49Speaker 5: And now Act three of yours, truly, Johnny Dollar and
- 17:52Speaker 5: the village of Virtue matter, Shoe Piccatello and I walk
- 18:04Speaker 5: the main street of Virtue of South Carolina, unmolested, virtually, unnoticed,
- 18:08Speaker 5: and we found the Mayor, Parley Carroway, and the little
- 18:10Speaker 5: shack that surf for an office.
- 18:12Speaker 9: I'm all sure, the police chief, mister Dollar. Don't you
- 18:15Speaker 9: forget that, sir.
- 18:16Speaker 3: And you've found no clue as to who has been
- 18:18Speaker 3: committing the robberies, no, sir, none whatsoever. But who else
- 18:21Speaker 3: would do it?
- 18:22Speaker 9: They're all three of the next gangsters, sure, ex gangsters?
- 18:26Speaker 3: Why mister Carroway, Why would these men suddenly want to
- 18:29Speaker 3: make trouble with their friends? You're townspeople.
- 18:31Speaker 9: I don't know. I honestly don't know. Less of course,
- 18:35Speaker 9: they think they can take all the the way they
- 18:38Speaker 9: used to take all the gangs in the old age.
- 18:40Speaker 3: After twenty years of a happy relationship.
- 18:42Speaker 7: Mister Carroway, they never made a bit of trouble in
- 18:44Speaker 7: all that kind I know it, I know it.
- 18:46Speaker 13: But the fact remains that unless this trouble stops, after all,
- 18:51Speaker 13: virtue is here long before they came. Unless it stops,
- 18:54Speaker 13: I say, I shall have to break their leaseh and
- 18:56Speaker 13: make them leave the plantation. Oh, they pay you pretty
- 18:59Speaker 13: well enough to keep it in good repair.
- 19:04Speaker 3: That's a beautiful ring you're worrying.
- 19:06Speaker 7: Eh?
- 19:07Speaker 3: Oh?
- 19:07Speaker 9: Oh, yes, two and a half carrot diamond sir?
- 19:11Speaker 3: And is that your nice new car off front?
- 19:13Speaker 9: It certainly is hinted pretty.
- 19:16Speaker 3: About eight thousand dollars pretty didn't.
- 19:18Speaker 7: You have a new one last year too, mister Carowaine.
- 19:21Speaker 9: Couse, I tried to have one every year. But now, genuine.
- 19:25Speaker 3: If you really think the robberies around here are going
- 19:27Speaker 3: to cause so much trouble, well I do, I do.
- 19:30Speaker 9: That's why I contacted mister Picotello.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Why haven't you called in the state police.
- 19:35Speaker 13: Because I am the mayor of Virtue. I am the
- 19:37Speaker 13: police department, and I can take care of these things myself.
- 19:41Speaker 13: Now that you gentlemen have witnessed a bad blood between
- 19:43Speaker 13: these gangsters and the people of the town, well, I'm
- 19:47Speaker 13: going to throw them off that plantation.
- 19:48Speaker 3: In spite of all the money they've been paying it.
- 19:50Speaker 9: Yes, sir, and I'm sure you general will back me up.
- 19:52Speaker 9: In all the money, did.
- 19:55Speaker 3: You say enough to keep your well dressed, well fed
- 19:57Speaker 3: and fancy car.
- 19:58Speaker 9: And I look here, shir you realize how much that
- 20:01Speaker 9: property will.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Bring one or that depends how much have you been offered.
- 20:04Speaker 3: I'll tell you how much.
- 20:05Speaker 9: One hundred and twenty four thousand.
- 20:08Speaker 3: How did you know? You just tell me? You also
- 20:11Speaker 3: told me why you've been robbing the people of Virtue
- 20:14Speaker 3: and those men at the plantation to stir up bad feeling,
- 20:16Speaker 3: give you an excuse to get them out.
- 20:18Speaker 7: What Johnny, you're right now?
- 20:20Speaker 3: Just harroway. If I do call in the state police,
- 20:22Speaker 3: it'll be to have you locked up, And if Joe
- 20:24Speaker 3: here has any sense, he'll tell the insurance company to
- 20:27Speaker 3: bring charges of fraud against you. You said it, Oh,
- 20:29Speaker 3: but the money you think of all the money I
- 20:31Speaker 3: could make shell in the old place. Now, where's the
- 20:33Speaker 3: stuff that's been stolen. It hasn't been hard.
- 20:36Speaker 9: It stored away, carefully stored away. I was going to
- 20:39Speaker 9: give it back when when those men left and I
- 20:41Speaker 9: could sell the plate.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Give them their stuff too, well, I'd make up for
- 20:45Speaker 3: it in cash.
- 20:46Speaker 13: Every cent of it in cash is I'd say it
- 20:49Speaker 13: was for breaking the leaves. Truly, mister dollars.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Why you listen? You owe money, grubbing crook. You're in trouble.
- 20:53Speaker 3: You you call you the state police? You bet? I
- 20:57Speaker 3: will unless unless what first, you lay off the plantation.
- 21:02Speaker 3: You've leased it to those men, Let them have it
- 21:04Speaker 3: and return all the stuff you stole.
- 21:07Speaker 9: Oh but if they find out.
- 21:08Speaker 3: You figured how to get it away from them, no'll
- 21:10Speaker 3: figure out how to get it back, discover it anything
- 21:12Speaker 3: you like. The point is that if you don't get
- 21:14Speaker 3: it back, I'll tell them where it is. And you
- 21:17Speaker 3: know what that'll mean. Oh, yes, mister, I'll get it back. Also,
- 21:21Speaker 3: respect that lease. I believe it has fifty more years
- 21:23Speaker 3: to run. Yes, you would have I will. Okay, you
- 21:26Speaker 3: all thisten Joe and I will forget the whole thing.
- 21:29Speaker 3: But if you don't and Joe will be checking on you.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Oh but I will.
- 21:33Speaker 9: I will, mister Dona, I promise you.
- 21:35Speaker 3: I'll Okay, come on, Joe, let's go back to the
- 21:38Speaker 3: plantation and have a drink with some respectable citizens.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:47Speaker 3: Less insurance business really has some funny ones. And I
- 21:50Speaker 3: guess it's the funny ones that balance out the bad
- 21:52Speaker 3: the tragic cases. Anyhow, I like it. Expense acount total
- 21:57Speaker 3: including the trip back to Hartford. Call it one hundred
- 22:00Speaker 3: bucks even. And if you of our little secret, Joe,
- 22:04Speaker 3: well maybe you'd better pay it out of petty cash.
- 22:07Speaker 3: And listen, those pals are yours. You better drop in
- 22:10Speaker 3: on them now and then to make sure they do
- 22:11Speaker 3: stay on the straight and narrow as well as that
- 22:13Speaker 3: old coot carraway yours, Trulle, Johnny Dollar.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Our star will return in just a moment.
- 22:33Speaker 14: Our flag now numbers fifty stars, and behind each star
- 22:37Speaker 14: there stands yet another flag representing one of the fifties states.
- 22:42Speaker 14: Michigan state flag was born on February twenty second, eighteen
- 22:45Speaker 14: hundred and thirty seven, because of the strategic role played
- 22:49Speaker 14: by Michigan in the War of eighteen twelve. The word
- 22:53Speaker 14: to a bore I will defend is prominent on the
- 22:56Speaker 14: blue flag of Michigan. Uneath it, arising sun casts its
- 23:01Speaker 14: rays over a lake, and a man standing on a
- 23:03Speaker 14: peninsula with his right hand raised symbolizing peace, while in
- 23:08Speaker 14: his left hand he holds a gun, indicating that although
- 23:11Speaker 14: they love peace, the people of Michigan are ready to
- 23:14Speaker 14: defend their state and nation. Another mottel, the state's official one,
- 23:19Speaker 14: is at the base of the flag. See querras peninsula
- 23:23Speaker 14: emonam circumspiece. If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you.
- 23:30Speaker 14: Thus does Michigan's flag carry its own invitation to visit
- 23:33Speaker 14: one of America's scenic carriers. Michigan State flag, the flag
- 23:39Speaker 14: of the twenty sixth state to enter the Union, was
- 23:42Speaker 14: adopted on August first, nineteen hundred and eleven.
- 23:45Speaker 3: Now here's our star to tell you about next week
- 23:48Speaker 3: story next week a strange series of fires, and believe me,
- 23:51Speaker 3: the reason for him is a strange one too. Join us,

- 26:50Speaker 15: the great detectives of old time radio with Adam Graham.
- 26:53Speaker 15: And now let's get back into the show.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, this was I think a very good
- 27:05Speaker 1: plot idea for Johnny Dollar. This town's got a lot
- 27:09Speaker 1: of atmosphere. Of course, the mystery is wrapped up pretty easily,
- 27:14Speaker 1: but I can forgive that just for the atmosphere and
- 27:17Speaker 1: the characters and Johnny getting a chance to kind of
- 27:21Speaker 1: prove himself against some very tough ombras. Of course, in
- 27:26Speaker 1: that ratio between the tragic cases and the fun cases
- 27:32Speaker 1: in this post serial, as in the five part serials,
- 27:36Speaker 1: I think Johnny's come out pretty good on that count,
- 27:39Speaker 1: though certainly the tragic cases can take a bit of
- 27:42Speaker 1: a toll all right. Well, on to some listener comments
- 27:46Speaker 1: and feedback. Kate says the best radio detective show and
- 27:51Speaker 1: the best Johnny Dollar Bob Bailey, I have a crush
- 27:57Speaker 1: on you hey there in Having You Rock love the Voice,
- 28:01Speaker 1: and Joel says Johnny Dollar is a great entertainment better
- 28:05Speaker 1: than ninety five percent of television series. Given the number
- 28:08Speaker 1: of TV channels that are out there and therefore the
- 28:11Speaker 1: number of TV shows that air, Johnny Dollar might be
- 28:16Speaker 1: better than even more than ninety five percent, but at
- 28:18Speaker 1: least that many. Thanks so much for the comment, Joel,
- 28:21Speaker 1: and that.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Will do it for today.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Join us back here tomorrow for Dragnet and then next
- 28:27Speaker 1: Friday another adventure with that man with the action packed
- 28:31Speaker 1: expense account. In the meantime, send your comments to Box
