- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:05podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:10I'm your host, Andrew Mcgibbon, and this episode is brought to
- 0:13you by the Great News Podcast because great news should be
- 0:18heard. Today's quote comes from Carl
- 0:21Lewis, one of the greatest athletes in Olympic history,
- 0:25winner of nine gold medals and a man who once said he never
- 0:29competed against other athletes. He competed against perfection.
- 0:34He once said if you don't have confidence, you'll always find a
- 0:39way not to win. That phrase find a way not to
- 0:45win is the one that bothers me. Lewis isn't saying that without
- 0:50confidence, you'll try hard and fall short.
- 0:53He's saying something far more unsettling.
- 0:56Without confidence, you will unconsciously engineer your own
- 1:01defeat. You won't even need an opponent.
- 1:04You'll do it yourself. Think about what that looks like
- 1:08in real life. You almost go for the promotion,
- 1:12but talk yourself out of applying.
- 1:14You nearly launched the project, but decide it needs a little
- 1:18more work first. You start strong, then pull back
- 1:22just before the moment of commitment.
- 1:24On the surface, it looks like caution or practicality or
- 1:29timing. But underneath, without self
- 1:32assurance, people subconsciously undermine their own potential
- 1:36and subvert opportunities for victory.
- 1:39The lack of confidence finds a way every single time.
- 1:44Here's what Lewis understood from decades of elite
- 1:46competition. Talent gets you to the starting
- 1:50line. Preparation gets you through
- 1:52training. But in the decisive moment when
- 1:56it counts, confidence is the variable that determines
- 2:00everything. Lewis's approach was to channel
- 2:03his energy and focus, run his race and stay relaxed.
- 2:09Because when you believe in yourself fully, you stop
- 2:12interfering with your own performance.
- 2:15Confidence isn't arrogance. It isn't certainty that you'll
- 2:19succeed. It's the decision to stop
- 2:22sabotaging yourself before you've ever begun.
- 2:26So here's the question. Where are you currently finding
- 2:30a way not to win? Not because the obstacle is in
- 2:33front of you, but because the doubt is inside you?
- 2:37Because that's the game Carl Lewis is describing, and the
- 2:41only way to stop losing it is to decide right now that you're
- 2:47going to back yourself. Confidence first, the winning
- 2:51follows. That's it for today.
- 2:53I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 2:57tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 3:02with another daily quote.
