Transcript
- 0:12Hi, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon on a
- 0:15Thursday. The Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:17Trent Condon and Ken Miller for the next couple of hours talking
- 0:21sports with you. Thanks for starting your
- 0:23afternoon here with us. We will take you up until just
- 0:26before 2 off the bench coming up from 2 until 5.
- 0:29Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:32We're going to talk to the voice of the Iowa, the Minnesota Wild
- 0:36boy. They're in O2 deficit down to
- 0:38nothing to the Colorado Avalanche.
- 0:40We'll talk to Joe O'Donnell, how the Wild can get back into this
- 0:43series, what has gone wrong, etcetera.
- 0:46We will talk a little puck at the bottom of the first hour of
- 0:50the program. 115 Brian Walton will be here.
- 0:53Talk about one of the surprises in MLB.
- 0:56Those Saint Louis Cardinals, although they lost yesterday
- 0:58playing pretty good baseball, hanging right in there in the
- 1:01Central Division that is now led by those red hot Chicago Cubs
- 1:05will talk to Brian Walton. And then Scott Agnes, who covers
- 1:08the Indiana Fever, will get a season preview with Scott.
- 1:12Not going to ignore the WNBA. Well, as long as certain players
- 1:17on the floor. And then it gets a little easier
- 1:19to just click and go past it. But that's what's coming up on
- 1:23the program. Trent will have some plays of
- 1:25the day. Circa Sports sponsor those.
- 1:27Speaking of Circa Caxiono and Circa, I have a little
- 1:30announcement. It's going to be more than a
- 1:32little announcement tomorrow at 12:30 when Mike Palm joins us.
- 1:35So a little tease to be listening A, to Mike Palm
- 1:38because he's usually got the chock full of information.
- 1:41But B, we've got a little bit more on top of that as we're
- 1:44going to make an announcement regarding A well, TuneIn
- 1:46tomorrow at 12:30. But I think, but you and I are
- 1:49and the radio station are all pretty pumped about that.
- 1:52How you been? Pretty good.
- 1:53How about you? Good, good.
- 1:55See ya. Nice to be.
- 1:56Here, Yes, absolutely, you're busy.
- 1:59Yeah, yeah, it is. But it's it's it's OK.
- 2:02But my age is I'm kind of feel my age for the first time ever.
- 2:05Maybe. Really.
- 2:06Yeah, I think so. I'm starting to Yeah.
- 2:08I mean, I'm guessing gets up with everybody, right, Except
- 2:11for, you know, elite athletes. But anyways, glad to be back
- 2:16here. Boy, the Cubs have been
- 2:17unbelievable the last three nights.
- 2:19Again last night, PCA boy, I can only imagine wouldn't be like
- 2:23well, a I'd have been gone, so I wouldn't I'd listen to it in the
- 2:26cab. Uh huh, or if I would have been
- 2:28back to the hotel. But that's what you know that's
- 2:30what happens when you leave early.
- 2:32But man, oh man, what a what a fun team to kind of follow,
- 2:37right? And to have as the the baseball
- 2:39team in central Iowa that moves the needle more than any of the
- 2:42others Cubs come from behind fashion beating those Reds.
- 2:45It was a pretty good team in their own right.
- 2:47This is a good team. Got to figure out the back end
- 2:49of that bullpen. That's true when it got a little
- 2:51worse. I think it got better addition
- 2:54by subtractions with Pagan's injury.
- 2:56I think that helps them. You've got some scar tissue.
- 2:59How many games did he blow against the?
- 3:00Guardians. Every single one of them.
- 3:02Man, there was there was a ton of them.
- 3:04But the Cubs have their own issues and it struck again
- 3:06yesterday. Matthew Boyd, who's been maybe
- 3:08not as sharp as he was last year, but he's still a big piece
- 3:11of that banged up rotation. Well, no more.
- 3:14He tore his meniscus of all things, playing with his kids,
- 3:17playing with his kids and tore the meniscus and just add to the
- 3:21heap of of Cubs pitchers that are on the IL.
- 3:26No timeline has been made yet. Surgery apparently was conducted
- 3:30this morning. But I, I don't know, maybe best
- 3:34case August, September. It didn't sound good, did it?
- 3:36Didn't did you see any more? I saw the playing with the kids
- 3:39right away. I mean that that was kind of the
- 3:41the top of the headline part of it and like, oh, what happened?
- 3:44Did you hear the what? Like they're playing ball in the
- 3:46backyard. He stepped on, you know,
- 3:47baseball and that's how he tore it or 'cause when I first read
- 3:51it, it was like he was like playing on the floor with his
- 3:53kids. I mean, that's I, I guess the
- 3:55way that it kind of went. That's what I read too, so you'd
- 3:57think it was more. Than I don't know I hadn't seen
- 3:59more so that's just kind of where the speculation for me
- 4:01when is running around you can definitely see that like hell
- 4:04yeah there's kids yes absolutely I there there's this little hole
- 4:08in our yard that I seem to hit all the time when I'm chasing
- 4:10after Jack and and someday that ACL is going to blow it it's
- 4:13going to be something like that so I didn't know if you saw
- 4:15anything further 'cause that's all I saw but is that how you
- 4:18read at the beginning too like he just on the.
- 4:19Floor on the floor with his kids.
- 4:22That's weird. It is.
- 4:23But baseball injuries, there have been so many of them.
- 4:26Guys sneeze and go in the IL. With a rib.
- 4:29Cartilage, yes. Rib toward ribs, Yeah.
- 4:32Yeah, there's so many of those. What is it about baseball that
- 4:36for whatever reason, there's been so many?
- 4:38Is it? Yeah, I don't know.
- 4:39The sheer volume of games are playing for a long time, but
- 4:42still, the NBA and NHL go forever, too.
- 4:45We don't hear about these kind of injuries.
- 4:47It doesn't feel like at least in the same realm that we do with
- 4:49baseball. Well.
- 4:52Maybe the guys aren't as good athletes too.
- 4:53You could get away with it a little bit more in baseball than
- 4:56those. Others that's that's fairpoint.
- 4:57We'll see where the Cubs go. I don't know.
- 4:59I mean, look at they're in first place in their division.
- 5:01This is a good baseball team. They're a fun baseball team.
- 5:04Everybody seems to be hitting at the at the right time now.
- 5:07Bush has come out of his slump. PCA Suzuki, who missed the
- 5:10beginning of the year. Bregman's hitting the ball.
- 5:12Nico is Nico Kelly behind the Playboy is good with that ABS.
- 5:17He doesn't miss. He does not miss.
- 5:20He's been terrific. Bullpen's been OK with one
- 5:23exception, 1 yesterday and that Martin Kidd who blew the save,
- 5:26he's already been designated for assignment.
- 5:28So we'll see where it goes. But they've got an afternoon
- 5:31game coming up here in about an hour or so.
- 5:34You had Cappy yesterday, I'm assuming?
- 5:36What did Cappy have to say anything?
- 5:38He loves his team. No way.
- 5:39Yeah. And I really like this team too.
- 5:43I I understand you got the Dodgers, They're behemoth.
- 5:45The Braves are playing great baseball and they're finally
- 5:47healthy for the first time in three years.
- 5:48And that obviously changes just the complexion of the whole
- 5:51thing. But he's gone spend.
- 5:54There is no guarantees. You never know when
- 5:56opportunities like this are going to hit and you look
- 5:59through all right, they're going to need maybe another couple
- 6:02arms now. Well, you know one of those arms
- 6:04apparently is Joe Ryan, your squad, but further down the
- 6:08rotation Ober. Have them.
- 6:12So not a glowing endorsement from a Twins fan.
- 6:14No bag of balls. What do you need is.
- 6:16That that's he's that bad. He's not that.
- 6:18Bad, but yeah. Maybe a change of scenery, maybe
- 6:21I mean a good team behind him. I don't know.
- 6:23I don't think he's that good. No, look at if the if Joe Ryan's
- 6:26available and you're going to go after Bailey Ober, Come on.
- 6:28And Joe Ryan avoided what could have been something, really so.
- 6:31What was the fight? What was the Where do we stand
- 6:33on that? OK.
- 6:34They feel like it's nothing that's going to be Is he going?
- 6:37To miss a start or two. Yes, yeah, going to be on the IL
- 6:39something and but overall not as because the early indications
- 6:43was this could be season ender. Yeah.
- 6:45And it's not that, at least that's what they say, right, If
- 6:48you can get any kind of package right now.
- 6:49Do it, Absolutely. I don't think you're going to
- 6:52though. Yeah, because you have to
- 6:53wonder, right? It's the same as Scooble.
- 6:55I mean, Scooble is going to break the bank at the trade.
- 6:57The Tigers worth the trade deadline.
- 6:59What does that mean for? What does that mean for the
- 7:01Tigers? What does this mean for Scooble
- 7:03going forward? This guy was going to break the
- 7:05proverbial bank. Cy Young winner, American League
- 7:08left-handed pitcher. He was going to be able to, you
- 7:11know, write his own ticket. But man, now you've got these
- 7:14concerns as to what you're going to do All right, baseball's been
- 7:17really good the last oh, certainly this week's been
- 7:21fascinating to watch. At least I've enjoyed the heck
- 7:23out of it. I really have the come from
- 7:25behind wins Cubs Monday night, Tuesday night and then again
- 7:30last night and they'll play here this afternoon.
- 7:33Real quick on the NBAI do want to, I do want to mention the
- 7:38Spurs and the Wolves. Look, Minnesota went to San
- 7:42Antonio. Best case scenario.
- 7:44Well, best case scenario, of course it would have bowled, but
- 7:47you wanted a split and they got game one got blown out last
- 7:51night. But you know what?
- 7:52I you, you could see that coming.
- 7:55Oh. Absolutely.
- 7:56I I was talking yesterday about that's an old spread game.
- 7:59Like if you like the spur side, don't lay the whatever what it
- 8:01got to 9 1/2 or whatever it was, it was about 9.
- 8:04And a half 10 or 10 at 1:00. Point late 29 1/2 That's and.
- 8:09That's what we saw. They won by what, 38 something
- 8:11like that? Yeah, I did.
- 8:13You did you do that? I did not.
- 8:15I should have. Yeah, I just believed in the the
- 8:18toughness. But I was just shocked too. 24
- 8:21minutes spraying in that game. Why I even playing him I thought
- 8:25was surprising. Fairpoint and that designation.
- 8:28You got the steal. You stole game one.
- 8:30Give him that extra time, give him that extra rest.
- 8:32Hopefully he can come back and and have a little bit more juice
- 8:35when you get up to Minneapolis for game three.
- 8:37I was surprised by that, but I love Chris Finch after the game.
- 8:41I don't know if you saw him. Last night's game or the game
- 8:43last night? I did not see that.
- 8:44I saw game one. He called them out.
- 8:46Did he? Oh yeah, He's a good coach.
- 8:49He absolutely is. Talked about their toughness
- 8:52that they weren't engaged, said they got punked.
- 8:56Did he and that will resonate, I think in that locker room
- 9:00because those are this is unlike most Minnesota sports teams that
- 9:04for the for the most part feel kind of soft.
- 9:06Usually they kind of there's toughness here.
- 9:08There's a lot of toughness on this squad and because of that,
- 9:11I think they'll bounce back and I think they really do have a
- 9:13shot in this series. I do too.
- 9:15They need more for man, no doubt.
- 9:16He was great in the fourth quarter game.
- 9:17One going to need that continuously and and you're
- 9:21going to have to have him out there 3538 minutes, yeah.
- 9:23Certainly ratch up the minutes for.
- 9:24Sure. The other guy's got to step up.
- 9:26You need and Nasri to have a game where he docks, he's
- 9:29capable for three pointers and and goes off.
- 9:31Randall has to have a out of body experience go off for 40.
- 9:34Those are the kind of things they're going to need.
- 9:35Mike Conley drink from the fountain of youth, as he did in
- 9:38Game 1. He was really good.
- 9:39Absolutely was. They got a little something out
- 9:40of Anderson. Shannon's so good off the
- 9:42bounce. He's so spent.
- 9:43Three, you know what? He's been a revelation, I think.
- 9:46I know he's banged up this year, but just those guys that are
- 9:48like, man, that guy's good, you know?
- 9:51We don't watch good in college. During the regular season, we
- 9:53just don't. And, and then it's those guys
- 9:55remember him in college, remember him maybe from the
- 9:57playoff a year previous or something like that.
- 9:59Like man, this guy barely plays and he's really good.
- 10:02Let's take a call then. I want to move on.
- 10:04What? You know what, Matt, just hang
- 10:06on. I I don't want to forget to do
- 10:07this because it really, it really struck me.
- 10:10Matt, we'll come to you in just a second.
- 10:12Did you see Scott Van Pelt's piece on Stephen Nurse on on
- 10:18Sports Center from the other night?
- 10:19He it is so good. Van Health's excellent.
- 10:22What did they call it? The big story is that.
- 10:24One big thing. One big thing, thank you, one
- 10:27big thing and I'm so glad I clicked on and watched.
- 10:29I had no idea that he is this an every night affair occurrence
- 10:32for him. Yeah, yeah, it's usually a part
- 10:34of the show at some point. Yeah, where SVP, just whatever's
- 10:37on his mind. And that's why his Sports Center
- 10:39is so different than any other. That's one Sports Center that,
- 10:43if I have time, I definitely want to catch.
- 10:45So if and I know the latest is always the greatest, but if you
- 10:49were is this is Scott Van Pelt entering that all time greatness
- 10:53ESPN Sports Center anchors. His for me, there's no doubt he
- 10:57is for me. He is just the way that he does
- 11:00things. He's also got the radio
- 11:01background so that he. Does that's true?
- 11:03Him and Ryan are still together. I absolutely loved.
- 11:05I thought that was my favorite. ESPN Radio 25 years ago, now
- 11:09something like. That How long was it really?
- 11:11Wow. 20 years ago. Good God, we're getting old.
- 11:13But I love the way that he also still incorporates kind of the
- 11:17more radio part of it. There's more opinion, there's
- 11:19the gambling part. I like that.
- 11:21And of course, too, and the bad beats and everything that he
- 11:23does there. Stanford Steve, I think is a
- 11:26great sidekick for him, too. So they do it well.
- 11:28But yeah, the one big thing, he's just so thoughtful.
- 11:30He really is. He's a guy.
- 11:32Genuine. Yes, it's.
- 11:35Because we have so many of the provocateurs over at ESPN and
- 11:37the Stephen A's and and things like that.
- 11:39And apparently Stephen A and the other butt Dart, what's his
- 11:43name? Skip Bayless are reuniting for
- 11:45tomorrow show. And I won't watch a second of it
- 11:47because that's just not my he's my style.
- 11:49Scott Van Pelt is my style. And when he does those kind of
- 11:52things, like he did Nick Nurse's brother, it shows you just
- 11:56there's a lot more there than just a guy talking about sports.
- 11:59If I didn't know, Nick, I'm not saying I'm not sure I would have
- 12:01clicked on it, but I'm so glad that I did it.
- 12:03So well done and so heartfelt. And and you can find it if
- 12:06you're on. XI just retweeted.
- 12:09It's such a, it's, it's 2 minutes and 22 seconds and it's
- 12:12absolutely worth every single one of those seconds.
- 12:15All right, let's get Matt in here.
- 12:16Then we'll get back into a couple of other topics from
- 12:19earlier this week. Hello, Matt, How are you?
- 12:21Thanks for being patient. Matt, what's on your mind?
- 12:24Yeah, you're good. Hey, I was just calling to see
- 12:25if you guys knew about the the Circa is giving away a trip to
- 12:32their spot every time there's a Cubs walk off win.
- 12:36But you know, I don't know if it's every time or if you have
- 12:40to sign up for it and then every time there is a walk up when you
- 12:43get like another entry into the. I, I heard about it for the
- 12:46first time yesterday and we're going to have Mike Palm on
- 12:48tomorrow. And I'm, I'm, I was meaning to
- 12:50ask him about that because I think it's for Illinois
- 12:53customers only. I think because they're over in
- 12:57Illinois and they have a relationship with the Cubs,
- 13:00Matt, but I'll ask Mike Palm, you know, you're going to get
- 13:03some details. Yeah, I don't know if there's
- 13:06every time we're just one, but I was wondering if if it is every
- 13:09time, like I'll be curious to know how many he thought they
- 13:11would give away. I mean, if it's every time three
- 13:15in a row. But I got, I got the details
- 13:18here. It's just real quick.
- 13:19There's seven things. You get a three night stay,
- 13:20Circa $500 Southwest Airlines gift card, a limo from Circa
- 13:27student from the airport, a $2000 credit to stadium swim
- 13:32table at the sports book, a $500 credit to Barry's, and then a
- 13:38$40 credit at the Legacy Legacy Club.
- 13:41So this is every single one of the walk off.
- 13:44Wins. I don't know, I can't.
- 13:45I don't know if it's every. Time, or I'm looking at it now,
- 13:47it is every, every game. They're gonna break them.
- 13:50Yes, absolutely. Yeah, I was wondering how many
- 13:53he thought they'd give away 'cause they're up to like or.
- 13:56And it sounds like it's only at Wrigley, though not on the road.
- 13:59That's correct, yes, yeah, but. But yeah, yeah.
- 14:03Matt, thanks for listening. Appreciate the call.
- 14:06I'll, I'll find out more tomorrow.
- 14:07But So what did you find? So yeah, this is on Circus.
- 14:10This is on Marquee is where I found the link.
- 14:12Gotcha. On Marquee, when the Cubs walk
- 14:14it off at Wrigley Field, you could win a trip to Circa in Las
- 14:18Vegas. You can sign up there.
- 14:19You do not have to be an Illinois resident for this.
- 14:21You don't. So for all of our Iowa residents
- 14:24out there and yeah, quite the deal.
- 14:26Holy mackerel. And now you're, I'm sure a lot
- 14:28of people are kicking themselves a little bit slow sided up.
- 14:30But yeah, sign up because I'm gonna guess there might be
- 14:32another walk off or two at Wrigley this year. $2000 stadium
- 14:37swim credit, you know far $500.00 of gold berries.
- 14:40That's I mean you're giving me a couple of lobster tails.
- 14:43Absolutely yes. Keep the Stella's coming.
- 14:46I love the fact they got Stella on top of berries.
- 14:50That's a really. That's a really good package.
- 14:52Yeah, I heard about it for the first time yesterday and then
- 14:55I'm glad Matt brought that up. We'll bring it up tomorrow with
- 14:57Mike Palm. We'll bring up our own.
- 15:00Well, I can't say anything more but be listening tomorrow at
- 15:0312:30. It's going to be, it's going to
- 15:05be some fun for some kicks and no listeners.
- 15:07And Circa Sports, that's tomorrow at 12:30.
- 15:10All right, real quick on the Minnesota Wild in Colorado.
- 15:12Avalanche, Joe O'Donnell coming up at the bottom of the hour.
- 15:15Colorado's so much faster than anybody I've seen all year.
- 15:18And you know what? And I said it and I was wrong.
- 15:20I thought Minnesota. Then it's again, what's the old
- 15:24expression? The series doesn't start till
- 15:26the home team loses a game. Well, the series has started.
- 15:29They're down to nothing. But they get the they get some
- 15:32rest because of the the Women's Professional Hockey League has
- 15:36the building on Friday night. So they couldn't play Friday.
- 15:40There's something going on tonight.
- 15:41They couldn't play, which is good because they need some time
- 15:44to lick their wounds and decide what they're going to do goalie
- 15:46wise. But Nathan McKinnon is just
- 15:48possessed. He's absolutely possessed.
- 15:51Makar is out of his mind and the goaltending for the Wild has
- 15:54just not been good. Nick, who joined us the last
- 15:58couple of days, He's a hockey guy, is he?
- 16:00Yes. You're gonna like him.
- 16:01He's just moved up in mine. Absolutely.
- 16:03He's a hockey guy, so. Who's his team?
- 16:04Did he say? Does he have a team?
- 16:05He's. Just he's just more of a fan of
- 16:07a sport. He's not a big.
- 16:09He's got like the weird. Well, he grew up.
- 16:10So he's a Patriots fan. Yeah.
- 16:12You know, because of his age, Yeah, just like Lucas and
- 16:14Patriots fans. But so he's got that part of it.
- 16:17He was pretty steadfast in digging his heels in.
- 16:21Keep Wallstead back out there for game two.
- 16:24I was on the other side, got to make a move after giving a big
- 16:26goals. Nine overall in game one and we
- 16:29had Dane. Dane laid it out, I thought,
- 16:31very well. Almost a tiny.
- 16:32Yes, we had Dane on and I thought he laid it out well on
- 16:35Tuesday. Make the change.
- 16:37The change actually just happened when we were talking to
- 16:39Dane is because it's a lot easier with this layoff.
- 16:44Yeah, good point. If it was that quick turn
- 16:46around, then you kind of head games those guys because of this
- 16:49break. I think it makes it a lot
- 16:51easier, simpler to go back to wall state because that's what
- 16:53they're going. To do right, I think so.
- 16:54I think you almost have to. I really do.
- 16:56The Gus bus was not great by any means, but again, the the
- 16:59Colorado just looks as though I don't know who's going to beat.
- 17:03Them. So is it just Colorado,
- 17:04Carolina? Just sign it up right now.
- 17:07Buffalo's really good. Oh yeah.
- 17:10Buffalo impressed the heck out of me last.
- 17:11I think it's Carolina and it's Colorado, but I thought
- 17:16Minnesota was going to give Colorado all they want.
- 17:18And again, I don't. Technically there's a long way
- 17:22to go, but is Minnesota going to beat Colorado for the next 5
- 17:24games? Right.
- 17:25Right. And that's what they have to do
- 17:27in order to win. I just don't see that happening
- 17:29it seems. Incredibly unlikely it does, and
- 17:31they'll get the ducks. And they would they Yes, they
- 17:34will get the ducks. I watched the little ducks.
- 17:36Last night they will get the Ducks.
- 17:37The Ducks were all over in the first period.
- 17:40Should have should have had a lead.
- 17:41It was 1. Nothing.
- 17:42I think they finally got 1 past the past Carter Hart.
- 17:45But yeah, Ducks should have won the first game.
- 17:48They should have won the first game.
- 17:50I thought I thought Utah played as well as the Golden Knights
- 17:53did in the first series. So anyways, we March on just
- 17:57real quick because I know, you know, when I'm here, horse
- 18:01racing kind of gets brought up a little more than not.
- 18:05Golden Tempo is not going to run in the Preakness.
- 18:07Second straight year the Derby winner has not run in the
- 18:10Preakness. If this does not move the Triple
- 18:12Crown committee to say, you know what, we have to adapt or die
- 18:15because that's what the Triple Crown will do.
- 18:18If they don't do something in time for next year, then this
- 18:24will continue to lose its luster because the Preakness is, I
- 18:29don't want to say dead, but it's on life support back-to-back
- 18:34years. The Derby winner is saying, you
- 18:36know what, it's just too fast for me to for me to run my horse
- 18:39back. We're going to keep them five
- 18:41weeks until they run the Belmont.
- 18:43There's no reason, none you couldn't run the Derby as
- 18:46always, first Saturday in May, the Preakness the first Saturday
- 18:49in June, the Belmont the first Saturday in July, you'll get
- 18:53more horses. The Derby winner won't pass on
- 18:55the Preakness as he's done the last couple of years.
- 18:58And it's not going to change. It's not going to change.
- 19:01Correct me if I'm wrong, but a year ago it wasn't just the
- 19:03Derby winner that didn't run, none of the horses that were in
- 19:06the. Derby there might have been.
- 19:07One might have been one. Yeah, and I think this year the
- 19:10there's going to be 1 and maybe the horse that got scratched at
- 19:14the gate. Do you?
- 19:14Remember, Oh yeah, that that was trying to do backflips.
- 19:16He did a backflip. I can't remember.
- 19:19Is it great white? I think might be his name.
- 19:21Yeah, my aunt had just in our family group message and just
- 19:23said my great grandma Mare. Yeah, our grandpa Mare, he
- 19:26always said always bet on the Gray one.
- 19:27She had just sent that message. 3 seconds it's later.
- 19:30Over he goes. Here he goes.
- 19:32And of course. It could have been way worse
- 19:33because the I've seen, and this has been brutal.
- 19:35I've seen horses flip over and the Jack, the jock can't bail
- 19:39out and the horse lands right on you.
- 19:42That that that's not pleasant. Anyways, so that's your horse
- 19:45racing story for the day. We'll get that.
- 19:48Joe O'Donnell coming in here real quick.
- 19:49What about Nixon Sixers? Just want to finish up on the
- 19:52NBA. Any have you seen anything
- 19:55there? They hung around.
- 19:56Sixers did last night without impede.
- 19:58I like the Sixer side in that one last night so.
- 20:01Why did Embiid not play? Is it just Embiid being Embiid?
- 20:05They called, they said that he's got an ankle sprain and his hip
- 20:09is sore. Just Embiid, just Embiid.
- 20:11Just physically the body does not and the.
- 20:14Sixers had a chance to beat them, yeah.
- 20:16Yeah, They were right there in the fourth quarter and had
- 20:18opportunities but didn't score. They put up 12 in the fourth.
- 20:22Another one of those How many clunky second halves and fourth
- 20:26quarters have we seen in these NBA playoffs from the Magic that
- 20:30it's got to be the worst ever? Yeah, for sure.
- 20:32You're up 18 and you score, what was it, 19 points in the whole
- 20:35second-half? Yeah.
- 20:36Brutal. Well, what was the Knicks
- 20:38Atlanta game? Yes, that was when they were
- 20:40down 61, right? And the Hawks, I think scored
- 20:42maybe 21 points in the in the second-half of that one.
- 20:45Just time in and time out, the Mexican went east.
- 20:50I think right now. Knicks Thunder.
- 20:52Yeah, I could see that. A couple other things real
- 20:55quick. NILNIL players era, there's a
- 20:58whole bunch of NILESPN has signed on What now?
- 21:02I've I've been trying to find as much as I can.
- 21:04I don't know how many years they've committed to this, do
- 21:07you know? No, do not.
- 21:08That was left out of the stories.
- 21:10I don't know if there was purposely, I don't know if they
- 21:12just don't know yet, but at least for this year and help me
- 21:15out with this one, because it's two separate tournaments.
- 21:18There's an 18 tournament and then a 16 team tournament,
- 21:21correct? Yes.
- 21:22Why? So what do you mean?
- 21:24Why you want to go back to that stupid cockamie thing that they
- 21:27did last year with point differential?
- 21:29Could you put 12 and 12? Or does the math not math?
- 21:31The math does not math. OK.
- 21:33Do you want to have a no pure bracket with no BIS, no weird
- 21:37consolation stuff, no pigtails, no double cross bracketing, no,
- 21:40none of that. And 18, we know how that you got
- 21:42quarter final, semifinal, championship, you got the
- 21:45backside of the bracket, same with the 16.
- 21:46And this year you were allowed an extra game in non conference
- 21:51scheduling. So I think that also made this a
- 21:53little bit simpler because I remember years ago I posed the
- 21:56question to somebody. It was when Maui was at its
- 21:59height, so 15. Years ago, how was the
- 22:01tournament? When Maui had built itself up to
- 22:04a nice tournament and kept getting and finally it was blue
- 22:06blood after blue blood. And when it got to that point,
- 22:09some national guy I talked to on the radio, I asked them why do
- 22:14we not expand this thing out and get it to a 16 team bracket?
- 22:16Why don't they want to do that? Because of non confidence
- 22:18scheduling. At the time, teams didn't want
- 22:21to give up four of their games. Of course the my games go along
- 22:23with it. Well, now with this extra game,
- 22:25it makes it a little bit more palpable that you can do that
- 22:28because you have more flexibility in your non
- 22:30conference scheduling. Your 16 team bracket will
- 22:32include. Oh my God, some blue bloods.
- 22:34Not just Iowa State, Michigan, Gonzaga, Louisville, Saint
- 22:38John's, Tennessee, Alabama, Miami, Maryland, TCU, Baylor,
- 22:43Tech, Creighton, K State, San Diego State and Oregon.
- 22:47Who's the worst team? San Diego, Oregon State, Oregon,
- 22:50Maryland. Oregon, well, the Big 10 teams,
- 22:52yeah, Maryland and Oregon, they were the ones that were
- 22:54definitely the bottom. And Creighton were the bottom of
- 22:56the pile last. Year and by the way, missed this
- 22:59while I was gone. How about Creighton and Iowa
- 23:02playing downtown Des Moines? That'll be good.
- 23:03That's massive. Absolutely.
- 23:05That's massive. Got a new coach coming in there
- 23:07for Creighton. I haven't seen much of how they
- 23:10did in the portal. Did you?
- 23:11I'm trying to think off the top of my head.
- 23:13Of course. Made headlines last year with
- 23:15Josh Dixon, Owen Freeman going there.
- 23:18Yeah, that's something we'll have to re evaluate.
- 23:20I saw a tweet. I saw an axe a video clip of
- 23:26Owen Freeman on Randazzo's show. OK, Yeah.
- 23:28And, and I'm paraphrasing, I wish I had it.
- 23:31And if I was a Creighton fan, this one just drove me over the
- 23:33edge because Owen Freeman, this is out of his own mouth.
- 23:38He took a lot. He took last year's conduit to
- 23:40learn about himself. What he's had a lot of time to
- 23:43learn about himself. And we paid you $1,000,000 for
- 23:46you to learn about yourself. We paid you to come and play
- 23:49basketball. We learned a lot about him with
- 23:52a finger injury. I think we learned even more a
- 23:54year ago in Omaha. And where did he end up?
- 23:56Auburn. Good luck.
- 23:57Auburn. Yeah.
- 23:58Steven Pearl, if this is the guy that you think is gonna keep
- 24:01your job going into your number. Two, how does this reflect on
- 24:04Matt Gatens? Yes, right, If it doesn't go
- 24:07well. If it doesn't go well.
- 24:08Yes, that's gonna be a problem for Gatens I.
- 24:09Would think, yeah. People know and pitch your wagon
- 24:13to a guy that I had one guy get fired, the other guy that walked
- 24:16away from the sport. Not exactly a glowing
- 24:19endorsement for Owen Freeman. Miller and Condon underway on a
- 24:23Thursday. Joe O'Donnell and hockey talk
- 24:26next. But before we go to break,
- 24:28here's a chance for you to win $1000.
- 24:30Head to kxando.com. The keyword this hour is win.
- 24:33WIN at KX and o.com. Your chance to win $1000.
- 24:37More opportunities coming up throughout the day.
- 24:40Joe O next. Miller and Condon, glad you're
- 24:43with us on the Thursday on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 25:10I'm Melody Condon. Welcome back. 12:30 Late Tom
- 25:14Stomping Tom Connors. What a name.
- 25:17What what made him stomping? I don't.
- 25:19Know I think it was on stage he was like stomping with his.
- 25:21Foot. Oh yeah, yeah, Getting the beat,
- 25:23going with the big the beat. Going and the place would go
- 25:25crazy. Here's Joe O'Donnell, the voice
- 25:27of the Minnesota Wild game. Game three, Saturday night, 8:00
- 25:33puck drop, downtown Saint Paul, Joe Trenton.
- 25:36Ken, thanks for coming on. How are you?
- 25:38Good fellas, always a pleasure. Always a pleasure to talk to
- 25:41you, Joe, and we appreciate you doing this for our audience here
- 25:43in the state of Iowa. Well, I, as you know, I thought
- 25:46Minnesota would win the series. It's not over.
- 25:49But Colorado, they just look a step faster.
- 25:52I don't know if that's the rest that they got after dispatching
- 25:55the Kings and fourth straight. Obviously a much more physical
- 25:58series Minnesota had against Dallas and a longer series.
- 26:01I don't know what's behind it, but Colorado's just just looked
- 26:04a step faster. Joe, how about that?
- 26:06Yeah, they've been, they've been the better team through two
- 26:09games, no doubt about it. You know, it just you always
- 26:13have after playoff games and even throughout regular season
- 26:17games, no matter the sport, you can always go 2020 hindsight or
- 26:21if this bounce had gone your way or this call or I guess what I'm
- 26:25getting at it. So like I just I just wonder in
- 26:27game one or two if the Wild have got one more save at some point.
- 26:30What does that do for the morale of the team?
- 26:34How much closer does the game and the end result ultimately
- 26:37be? And look, you got to you got to
- 26:39get good goaltending to win the playoffs.
- 26:41It's not a secret. It's not a surprise.
- 26:42It's been that way for as long as I can remember watching
- 26:45playoff hockey. And so far, through two games,
- 26:48you know, the Wild haven't gotten that extra stay when they
- 26:51need it. They got it in the Dallas
- 26:52series. So see where it goes from here.
- 26:55Obviously Game 3 is, you know, is the biggest game of the Wild
- 26:58season to this point. And you know, and you hope in a
- 27:01playoff run you get more of these where it's say the next
- 27:04game up is the game of the year. So we'll see how they handle it.
- 27:08So they make the change. They go to Gustafson in Game 2,
- 27:11back to Walstead game three. What's the anticipation after
- 27:14the 96 loss in game one? You make the move, the wall of
- 27:17Saint Paul goes down to the bench.
- 27:19Now you at least have some time to figure this out.
- 27:22What's the conversation happening there?
- 27:25Yeah, I think it's the way you got to look at it is.
- 27:27And you know, when I talked to you guys originally after game
- 27:30one, I don't, you know, I don't think we had all the information
- 27:33that I eventually got by the time we dropped the fucking game
- 27:35too. And that some of the Wilds
- 27:37reasoning for going with Phillip got to send in Game 2 and not
- 27:40yet for Volstead was in part because of the workload for the
- 27:43young kid and just feeling like he needed a little break.
- 27:46He'd never played seven straight games in his NHL career.
- 27:49Those are John Heinz's words, not mine.
- 27:51The Wild head coach telling me that, you know, and the rest of
- 27:54the media as well, like it was part of their decision.
- 27:56They felt like he just needed a break.
- 27:59I don't know how much of that, you know, was Ball said.
- 28:01Like, I doubt the kid would say, hey, I'm fine sitting this one
- 28:05out or hey, start Gus and I'll watch this one.
- 28:07Like, I don't think that that happened, but I do certainly
- 28:10think they factored in talking to Wally.
- 28:12How are you feeling? Right, Like where you at?
- 28:15And the Dallas series was stressful on the young kid.
- 28:18He'd never been in that spot before.
- 28:20He faced a ton of shots in those six games, a double overtime
- 28:24game, a single overtime game. So I think there were some
- 28:26things that, you know, after game one wasn't in his best
- 28:29against the Avalanche and maybe he looked a little tired out
- 28:32there to the staff. They decided to make the switch
- 28:35and they're putting in a guy that has great playoff success
- 28:38numbers wise, not maybe wins and losses, but save percentage
- 28:40wise. Gustafson like a career 9/16
- 28:43save percentage in the playoffs for Game 2.
- 28:46He'd been their number one for most of this year.
- 28:49He's their big ticket. Gold center as far as contract
- 28:51extension goes. So it's not like you're putting
- 28:53in an untested, unproven guy when you were placed Walstead
- 28:57for Game 2. Obviously didn't work out.
- 28:59So my anticipation now is that with the time off, with some
- 29:03practice time, that they will go back to Volstead.
- 29:06My opinion only on that situation.
- 29:08I think it would be the right move.
- 29:10And you let the young kid play the rest of the series, no
- 29:12matter how the injury goes. Interesting.
- 29:15What about Quinn Hughes? What?
- 29:17What does Colorado doing to Quinn Hughes?
- 29:19Do you notice a difference? What they're, you know, trying
- 29:22to take him out of the game as much as possible, jump on him as
- 29:26soon as they possibly It's easier said than done, he's so
- 29:29quick on the skates. But are they doing anything
- 29:31different to Quinn Hughes? No, I mean, I've watched teams
- 29:35now as this season moves along, can like, you know, the more you
- 29:38can pressure them, you think the more you force him to get rid of
- 29:42the puck. But he's so poised with it.
- 29:43He's so confident with it. Sometimes that doesn't even
- 29:45work. Like he's in some vulnerable
- 29:47spots on the ice where, you know, normal hockey logic or a
- 29:51coach's perspective would tell you, move the thing, dump it in,
- 29:53do something just you're in a dangerous area, get rid of it.
- 29:57And Quinn doesn't do that. Like, he'll hang on to it.
- 29:59He'll shift back one more time. He'll make another spin move.
- 30:02We'll cut on his edges. It's a little bit of like a
- 30:05heart attack every time. He's got the bucket times
- 30:07because he's so willing to make some of these high risk moves.
- 30:10But he's so good at it that I think that, you know, obviously
- 30:13everybody's comfortable. He's in those spots.
- 30:15He's confident with the puck. Let him do his thing.
- 30:17He's a unique player in that way.
- 30:19What I have seen from the episode is that they are, you
- 30:22know, in my opinion, really trying to pressure him with
- 30:25sometimes multiple players to force his hand.
- 30:28The forces issue a little bit hasn't changed his game.
- 30:30He still seems like he wants to puck and he wants to do all the
- 30:32magical things he does with it. But I think the ABS are
- 30:35certainly, you know, the quicker you can close on him with 123
- 30:39players sometimes if you have to, depending on where he's out
- 30:41on the ice, force him to give it up and and maybe take him out of
- 30:46his comfort zone. Joe, the series isn't over, but
- 30:48they have to win four out of five.
- 30:50But we just jumped right past what they did.
- 30:53Getting that win. It gets a very good Dallas team
- 30:55in the opening round. What did that win mean for the
- 30:57organization? We know the history, the
- 30:59consecutive losses in the first round of the playoffs, just just
- 31:02getting to the conference semifinals, getting that monkey
- 31:05off their back. How important was that to the
- 31:07organization? Look, it was big.
- 31:10It was big for the fans. It was big for the organization.
- 31:13Helps obviously on a business perspective, because you get
- 31:15more home games, you make more money.
- 31:18It justifies the moves you made in season to get a guy like
- 31:21Quinn Hughes. It justifies trade deadline
- 31:23moves you made if you're Bill Guerin hockey OPS.
- 31:25But it's not nearly the goal for the players and the hockey
- 31:29operations staff Like, and I can tell you this, like after game
- 31:33six and the Wild beat the Stars, I saw Karil Caprice off outside
- 31:37the locker room in the hallway. I think he was waiting to talk
- 31:39to somebody from Dallas. And I said, hey, Congrats.
- 31:43And he literally looked at me and said Congrats for what?
- 31:47So OK no Congrats. Keep it going buddy.
- 31:50Like let's let's. Get it, You know, like that
- 31:53fired me off because like the players didn't act like the fans
- 31:56or the staff or you know, and when I say staff, I'm talking
- 31:59like business staff, right? The ticket sales folks, the
- 32:01marketing folks. Like for a lot of us, myself
- 32:03included, it was really exciting.
- 32:05But for the players, job not near done.
- 32:07And I think they understand that.
- 32:08I don't think they think this series is over.
- 32:10They're going to come out in game three and they're going to
- 32:12put it all on the line and see where the chips fall.
- 32:15John Hines just talked with the local media and he brought up
- 32:18how in the Dallas series they lost back-to-back game, They
- 32:20lost games two and three. They learned some lessons from
- 32:22that. They turn the series around.
- 32:24So I think certainly they can draw on that.
- 32:26They have players of Stanley Cup experience and and having won
- 32:29Stanley Cups in the dressing room and this group just a
- 32:32series ago when the narrative was here they go again, They
- 32:35can't get out of the first round.
- 32:36They were the underdogs and they found a way to get it done.
- 32:38So I think the Wild will come out with the right approach
- 32:41Saturday night game three. The rest will help his team
- 32:43immensely. The practice time tomorrow will
- 32:45help his team immensely. They always respond when they
- 32:48have rest and practice time. They've always come out this
- 32:51year in particular and played really good stretches of hockey
- 32:54after having breaks on the schedule, so I think it benefits
- 32:56them way more than it does the ABS.
- 32:58Is, is Boldy OK? I'm referring to that play by
- 33:01McKinnon, who I think is playing as well as I've seen him play,
- 33:04and he's unbelievable to begin with.
- 33:05But I didn't like that play at the end of the game.
- 33:07I mean, it would have made a difference in the game if they
- 33:09would have been called a penalty or not, but I didn't like it.
- 33:13But Boldy's OK, Joe, as far as you know.
- 33:16Yeah, you're not. A lot of guys skated today.
- 33:19So the team flew back after the game Tuesday night, got in about
- 33:23think I got home just 4-3 in the morning.
- 33:26So yesterday was an off day. Today was an optional skate.
- 33:29A lot of the lesser used time on ice guys skated.
- 33:33Some of the Black Aces skated, you know, the guys that are
- 33:36regularly scratched in the playoffs.
- 33:38So we didn't really get a look at some of the regulars for the
- 33:40Wild, but I think Boldy's fine. I mean, he's such a competitor,
- 33:44such a tough kid. That was a somewhat dangerous
- 33:46hit. Obviously went face first in the
- 33:48boards. Something like that to me only
- 33:51fires up on that Bold. He only hones in his focus a
- 33:54little bit more. So I'd expect him to be ready to
- 33:57go for game three with a chip on his shoulder, knowing he can be
- 34:00better in the series and and he's got to be to help the Wild
- 34:02win. What do you anticipate the early
- 34:05crowds going to be? Like I mentioned to Ken, going
- 34:07into Game 6, that nervous energy, it reminds me so much of
- 34:11the Wild and and the playoff. Just problems that they had is
- 34:15that nervous energy that you got in Boston back in the late 90s
- 34:18and into the 2000s before obviously they broke through.
- 34:21What do you think? It's going to be already down O2
- 34:23Saturday night. You get this extra time to
- 34:25prepare and get ready for it. What's the crowd going to be
- 34:27like Saturday? I think it's going to be off the
- 34:31charts really trend. I do like I, I, I think the
- 34:34anticipation for this game now look, if it's a one one series,
- 34:38you know, the building might collapse with the with the
- 34:40excitement level. But I do think that from a fan
- 34:43perspective, a lot of this is house money.
- 34:45Like they know the team's banged up, missing 2 of their key
- 34:47players in the series, which puts them at a huge
- 34:50disadvantage. But they also know that they
- 34:52just got out of you know, that monkey off their back.
- 34:54They exercise the first round demons.
- 34:56They beat a Dallas Stars team that's a huge rival.
- 34:58Colorado's just as big of a rival and has been for so many
- 35:01years. These teams now meeting for the
- 35:03fourth time in the playoffs in the wild franchise history.
- 35:06So I think with the latest great start, plenty of time for the
- 35:09folks to take care of their pregame festivities.
- 35:13I really think it's going to be a crowd that says, you know what
- 35:16kind of screw it, we're here, Here's cards were dealt.
- 35:19Whoever's in the lineup, doesn't matter.
- 35:21Get behind who I think will be Ballstead, Annette the young
- 35:24goalie and and have this place rocking going.
- 35:27To be fascinating. Did you?
- 35:28Do you watch hockey on your off night?
- 35:30Did you see any? Anaheim, I guess, is where I'm
- 35:32going. I thought they look really good,
- 35:34Joe. You know, I didn't watch.
- 35:36I watched a few minutes last night, the third period when I
- 35:39saw they were up. I think that's going to be a
- 35:42longer series that I think maybe some might have expected and I'm
- 35:46trying to find its way, right. They have such a young core
- 35:48group of guys. They have some bats like an Alex
- 35:51Coloren that's one of Stanley Cup Jacob Troopers been around
- 35:54the block and some deep playoff run.
- 35:56But they are mainly a young, you know, I think they led the
- 35:59league in goals by players under 23 years of age and wasn't even
- 36:03close. So they are a young, young team.
- 36:06They'd like to trade chances, like to get up and down the ice.
- 36:08I think it's going to be a great series.
- 36:11I really do. I think Vegas will have the edge
- 36:13when it's all said and done. I might have mentioned that you
- 36:15guys last week, but I just Anaheim's fun team and they are
- 36:18fun team to watch and they're going to be on the rise for a
- 36:20number of years. Same with San Jose Sharks who
- 36:22just missed out on the playoffs and now I ended up with the
- 36:25number 2 draft. That's another story.
- 36:27Don't get me started. Yeah, with the leaves.
- 36:29My God. Yeah, with the with the shadiest
- 36:32ping pong ball. Unbelievable.
- 36:33Draft lottery truly is it is, you're right and nobody will
- 36:38ever admit to it, but you know, where there's smoke, there's
- 36:40fire and it just seems like it's been weird the last couple of
- 36:42years how how it's worked out. However, I think ultimately
- 36:46it'll be great for the game and the league the way that some of
- 36:48these upstart teams, these young teams are starting to find their
- 36:52footing a little bit and they play exciting brand of hockey
- 36:54because of all the skill they have.
- 36:56No. Doubt.
- 36:57You look to the east, is it Carolina then a gap with
- 37:00everybody else for you or is it a little bit tighter?
- 37:02Ken starting to fall in love I think with the Sabres team.
- 37:05Yeah, look, they're a fun team. They're again high end.
- 37:09They go, they want to play fast. They can they can come at you in
- 37:12waves, they can score on the power play.
- 37:15They've got young mobile defenseman.
- 37:17They got some kids that are just figuring out what playoff
- 37:20hockey's about, which is exciting.
- 37:21And obviously they got a ravenous fan base.
- 37:23So I think whoever comes out of that series, Montreal, Buffalo,
- 37:27they're very similar teams in my opinion.
- 37:29Again, young, you haven't really been there lately in the last
- 37:33handful of years. So like there's an excitement
- 37:35level there. But Caroline has been there,
- 37:37done that. They're their biggest bugaboo
- 37:39has been the conference final. So many years now they get to
- 37:42the conference final and they can't punch your ticket to get
- 37:45to the the last round. I think this year could be
- 37:48different for Carolina, pending they get the goaltending.
- 37:50You know, Freddie Anderson, to me, it's still a question mark.
- 37:53He's been around the block, but he's often injured.
- 37:56He's often not at his best. I think if Carolina gets
- 37:59goaltending, I think they represent the east of the
- 38:01Stanley Cup Final. But you know, this Buffalo and
- 38:05Montreal series is going to be an outstanding one from an
- 38:08entertainment standpoint. I know what a game like is it?
- 38:11Is it like in Montreal is? I don't think there's anything
- 38:13like it personally. What's Buffalo like for a home
- 38:15game? No, it's, it's.
- 38:18And listen, they've had, you know, the last few years, yeah,
- 38:23been fortunate enough to travel there with the Wild and see like
- 38:26they've always been like, here we go again, right?
- 38:29Because they missed the playoffs for 11 straight years or
- 38:31whatever it was. Might have been longer than
- 38:33that. Like that.
- 38:35That's a tough pill to swallow for a passionate, passionate
- 38:38fan. Just take the Buffalo Bills fans
- 38:41and put them in a hockey game. That's what we're talking about
- 38:45here. So for them to finally get in
- 38:47the playoffs, to get out of a round, to be in a battle with
- 38:51one of their hated rivals. I mean, Buffalo is right on that
- 38:54Canadian border basically. So, you know, that's why they
- 38:58sing oh, Canada before every one of their own games.
- 39:00You know, they are, they are Canadian border town
- 39:02essentially. So it makes that Series A little
- 39:04bit more spicy. As you know Joe, I'm a casual
- 39:07and jump in in April. Of course, I didn't see the
- 39:09Ducks last year. Full circle back to the Ducks.
- 39:13This is their second year of that color scheme with the
- 39:15orange. Those have got to be the ugliest
- 39:17sweaters in the league, right? I, I, I don't, you're the second
- 39:22person that's mentioned this to me in like the last 72 hours.
- 39:25I feel like, so you're not alone.
- 39:29But I, I, I, I think I like their whites more like I don't
- 39:32mind the orange, but that's too much orange on the, on the
- 39:35orange ones, right? Like, you know, but again, like
- 39:40I'm always for give me like a scheme.
- 39:42I don't see all the time. Like if, if, if your, if your
- 39:45color scheme is the same as a team in Major League Baseball,
- 39:48the NBA, like then it's like you feel like you've seen it before.
- 39:52And that's why the retros are so much fun few times a year.
- 39:55You know, I'm a big Phillies fan obviously being from
- 39:57Philadelphia. Like the powder Blues that they
- 39:59wear for their Thursday like day games.
- 40:02Dude, I'll take them 162 * a year, you know?
- 40:05The retros at the Wildwear, the 78 N stars throwbacks like
- 40:10amazing look. So unfortunately the leagues
- 40:12don't allow you to wear those too many times for whatever
- 40:15reason, and that's kind of annoying.
- 40:16Yeah, my squad should never change their uniforms from back
- 40:19in the day as well. Joe O'Donnell.
- 40:21Joe, thanks for doing this. Going to pose on you on Monday
- 40:23for game #4 if your schedule allows.
- 40:25Joe, thanks for coming on. Appreciate it.
- 40:28Alright guys, talk to you soon. Good to talk to Joe Donald,
- 40:30voice of the Minnesota Wilds. We talk hockey for the folks
- 40:33that don't like hockey and the listening audience.
- 40:35I'm sorry. I've spent in my last six weeks
- 40:38and I'm going to talk what I want to talk about.
- 40:40I've talked about what you wanted to talk about for 29
- 40:43years and 10 months. I'm going to talk hockey in the
- 40:45final six. Weeks.
- 40:46That sounds great to me. Right.
- 40:47And we've got a story just north of us there.
- 40:50HL affiliate plays downtown Des Moines.
- 40:53I'm sorry, actually, I'm really not and don't think of me any
- 40:57different. But sorry.
- 40:59We'll take a time out, come back.
- 41:00We will finish up the hour. Hour number two, going to talk a
- 41:04little Saint Louis Cardinal baseball as they've been a story
- 41:07so far this year. And then we'll preview the WNBA
- 41:10Kate Martin Wave. What's that?
- 41:11I thought she was maybe not the face of that franchise, but she
- 41:15certainly brought a lot of people into the building.
- 41:18She's well known. I was shocked that she made the
- 41:22team. The The Aces are going back to
- 41:25the Valkyries. Both.
- 41:27Both. Yeah.
- 41:28Surprised. She was surprised to hear her
- 41:30name called a draft night. We remember that story, just how
- 41:32crazy it was. So she's a face.
- 41:36Is she one of those players? And we know how difficult it is
- 41:39to make this league. She made a couple years.
- 41:41That's more than I thought. And we'll see if there's going
- 41:44to be a home for her. I hope there is.
- 41:46I don't think it's going to be in Indiana.
- 41:48I mean, everybody, you know. Yeah, I I get you.
- 41:50I get why you would like to see that.
- 41:53We'll see. We're going to talk to Scott
- 41:54Agnes at 1:30. Miller and Condon, glad you're
- 41:56with us. We talked sports with you on the
- 41:58Iowa Sports Radio Network. Hi, Miller.
- 42:11Condon, welcome back. Final couple of minutes, first
- 42:14hour of the program. Just came across a tweet and
- 42:17boys just spot on. If Ted Turner's funeral is
- 42:20delayed by weather, they better damn well be playing the Andy
- 42:24Griffith Show during the delay. How many?
- 42:28Today. Right, Braves delayed by rain.
- 42:31Let's go to Andy Griffith. Oh man, I I mean, having the
- 42:36Braves on TV, they were so bad. Do you remember back in the?
- 42:39Of course you do. Yes, absolutely.
- 42:41Until 91 they were awful, terrible and.
- 42:44But a great broadcast team or a number of broadcast voices I.
- 42:48Loved it because it was just baseball on yeah me too and be
- 42:51at grandma's house because we didn't have cable and you knew
- 42:54that there was going to be a ball game.
- 42:55He had the Cubs on WGN. He had that and and we see it.
- 42:58I mean, I see it in my era, how many Braves fans there are from
- 43:01baseball Benny to so many of my buddies have grown up and they
- 43:05just become brace fans. And it helped obviously then to
- 43:07run in the 90s and really solidifying things.
- 43:10But watching Dale Murphy and then Dale Murphy and then seven
- 43:13jokers, they were awful. But Ted Turner, what a life,
- 43:19what a career and so many times didn't feel like again.
- 43:23This is when did you first? Hear of him when he was sailing.
- 43:25Well, didn't he win the What did they call it?
- 43:27Is that the America's Cup? Is that what it's called the big
- 43:30sailing event? Yes.
- 43:31Yes. Absolutely.
- 43:32I, I just knew him as the TBS guy.
- 43:35I knew him as the Braves owner. That's how I knew him.
- 43:39And then it was all the extra things that came on then.
- 43:41Oh, he also owned CNN For me. It wasn't, he owned CNN and also
- 43:45TBS. It was the baseball, the sports
- 43:47part of it. Oh, that guy owns that too.
- 43:50And can't they get Larry King a better set?
- 43:53I mean, watching CNN as a youth, and it was weird to me.
- 43:59Like, all right, they're just talking about the news all day
- 44:02long and like, how is this going to work?
- 44:04But what tipped it is staying with my grandma for a while
- 44:08during the Gulf crisis. And that time period, that's
- 44:13where you went because you had your CBS News, your ABC News at
- 44:185:30. Yeah.
- 44:19And it was done by 6. They went local news.
- 44:21SOAP operas on up until that point.
- 44:23And the incredible job that they did, I mean, they made Norman
- 44:25Schwarzkopf into, I mean, what was the guys in that black
- 44:29Bernie something Bernie? The news guy the the main
- 44:35anchor, I think his name was Bernie.
- 44:37Bernie. I don't remember Bernie.
- 44:39If I saw him, I'm sure I would. I think you would, yes,
- 44:41absolutely. Anyways, our two Brian Waltz
- 44:45coming up in 20 minutes. Scott Agnes covers the fever
- 44:48coming up at the bottom of our number 2.
- 44:50Miller and Condon talking sports with you.
- 44:52Glad you're with us on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
