- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Don't build the barn before you plant the field.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: It's easy to dream about the rewards of success,
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: but if we skip the planting stage, we'll have nothing to harvest.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: In the marketplace,
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: as in life,
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: true growth starts with adding significance to others before chasing personal gain.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Today, our focus is Proverbs 24-27 because it's the 24th day of the month.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Marketplace Proverbs and Coffee with Ernie,
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: where a proverb a day keeps stinking thinking away.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Hi, I'm Ernie Lansford,
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: and it truly is my desire to help you connect the biblical wisdom
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: to everyday marketplace decisions,
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: allowing you to build relationships that outlast any transactions.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: We do our best here to bring timeless biblical truth into the marketplace,
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: where influence is real.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Choices are constant, and frankly, relationships matter more than results.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: So grab your cup of coffee or tea or latte or soda or water
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: or whatever it is you drink,
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: if you drink something when you're listening to this podcast.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: So let's get started.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Today, I'm sharing from Chapter 24 of the book,
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Marketplace Proverbs,
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Volume 2,
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Micro to Macro,
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: The Ripple Effect of Influence, written by yours truly and co-author John Cluter.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: So reading from the ESV, English Standard Version, Proverbs 24, verse 27.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: First plant your fields, then build your barns.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Perhaps your work outside,
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: or make that prepare your work outside,
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that, build your house.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: All of us have dreams of success,
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: whether it's career milestones, financial freedom, or enjoying the finer things.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: But scripture reminds us that our order of priorities really matters.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Planting fields before building barns is about laying the right foundation
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: that serves others,
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: adds significance to everyone we encounter, creating value and honoring God.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: All of that before focusing on ourselves.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: We've all been subject to what I call, or others have called, the shiny object syndrome trap.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: And too often,
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: and I'm just as guilty as anyone,
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: if not more so, we measure success by what we can buy.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: A bigger house, a nicer car, more toys.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: And while those things aren't inherently wrong,
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: they can become distractions if they come before our calling to serve.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: I've seen people, myself included, justify major purchases as rewards.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: For hitting career goals.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: You know, that Rolex watch that keeps time just as well as the $25 watch at Walmart.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: that really nice European auto that I bought that works just as well as
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: a Toyota Corolla or Camry.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I've done that because I was justifying it as, oh, this is my reward for doing so well.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: But you know what happened?
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: I created a burden of debt.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: And then unexpected things happened because of that.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: My virtual mentor and coach, John Maxwell, summed it up perfectly.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Quote, success is what we do for ourselves.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Significance is what we do for others.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: Real success isn't about accumulations.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: It's about the difference we make in the lives of others.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: So let's think about this from success to significance per Dr. Maxwell.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Proverbs 24, 7 calls us to plant fields first.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: That means,
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: in my perspective,
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: building trust, serving well, adding significance, and cultivating relationships.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Now, in a coffee shop drive-thru,
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: you've heard me say this many times,
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: the quality of the coffee doesn't change based on whether it's served to us,
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: driving a $100,000 European auto or a $10,000 car with a quarter of a million miles
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: on it.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: What matters most is how we treat the person across the counter, handing us the coffee.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: In every interaction, we can choose to add significance or we can chase status.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: One leaves a legacy.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: The other fades when the shine wears off.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Today's customer success code, success fades when the shine wears off.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Significance grows roots that last.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: O Lord, hallowed be your name.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: May your kingdom come in me and my house as it is in heaven.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Through your Holy Spirit,
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: convict me and those that are listening to examine our hearts and determine
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: if we honor you by adding significance to others rather than success to ourselves.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Your word clearly shows that success comes from As a byproduct of loving,
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: praising, and worshiping you above all else and serving others.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: So please guide us to live with a steward-leader mindset.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Always seeking to serve, to add significance, to add value to others.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Jesus' name we pay.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: I've got some expanded action points for you this morning.

- 7:51SPEAKER_00: At the end of the day, reflect.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Did I focus on adding significance and value to others?

- 9:15SPEAKER_00: So,
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: I'm just asking you,
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: if it is influential,

- 9:38SPEAKER_00: please share it with others and ask them to subscribe.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: And I'll leave you with my standard customer success statement.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Success is temporal.
