#496 NFL Kicker Harrison Butker Speaks of Self-Sacrificial Love. In Response..."The Demonic Shrieks and Groans" Are Heard Across The World · Claymore: Become Who You Are

• 0:07
Speaker 1: Welcome to Become who you Are podcast, a production of the John Paul II Renewal Center.
• 0:11
Speaker 1: I'm Jack Rigg, your host.
• 0:12
Speaker 1: Hey, thanks for joining me today.
• 0:13
Speaker 1: St Catherine of Siena said that if you become who you are, that you would literally set the world on fire.
• 0:19
Speaker 1: And St Athanasius, an early church father and a doctor of the church, said the son of God became man so that we might become God.
• 0:26
Speaker 1: You know I make a wild guess at this, but I bet you, most of us, are a bit disconnected from this divine life that these saints are pointing us to.
• 0:33
Speaker 1: Yet Saint John Paul II said there's an echo of the story of this divine life that we're created for, inscribed in each human heart, in your human heart, and if you put on the proper lens if I put on the proper lens we can get in touch with this echo within us in such a way that we have that aha moment.
• 0:50
Speaker 1: See, that's the genus of St John Paul II's theology of the body.
• 0:53
Speaker 1: It connects our lived experience of life to the gospel in such a way that our life takes on a whole new meaning and helps us answer those big questions that our whole culture is so confused about today meaning and helps us answer those big questions that our whole culture is so confused about today.
• 1:08
  Speaker 1: Who am I?
• 1:16
  Speaker 1: What's my purpose?
• 1:17
Speaker 1: Why were we created, male and female?
• 1:21
Speaker 1: How do I find happiness here on earth?
• 1:24
Speaker 1: How do I find love that satisfies forever?
• 1:25
Speaker 1: Hey, glad you're with me, I'll be.
• 1:28
Speaker 1: I am here live in the studio with Linda Piper.
• 1:31
  Speaker 1: Linda's in.
• 1:32
Speaker 1: Linda, I don't know if you want to just mention anything about your son, you know, and everybody.
• 1:38
Speaker 1: Just keep me in your prayers.
• 1:40
Speaker 1: He's just had a little setback in his life.
• 1:43
Speaker 1: Linda's here visiting and trying to take care of the family.
• 1:47
Speaker 1: Linda, good to see you.
• 1:48
Speaker 1: Sorry that you have to come in on tough times here.
• 1:53
Speaker 2: Well, we all have tough times, all of us Doing well.
• 1:57
Speaker 2: We have found out that there's so many people praying for him and his recovery.
• 2:04
Speaker 2: Found out that there's so many people praying for him and his recovery that it's very heartwarming to know that people really do care and that has been communicated to him quite well.
• 2:13
Speaker 2: And yes, he continues to have setbacks, with infections and so on and a lot of the medications upsetting his stomach and those kinds of things that you might expect.
• 2:22
Speaker 2: But through it all, it has taught the rest of us a lot about humility itself, watching him go through it and the love being poured out by people which gives us hope.
• 2:37
Speaker 2: And that's really all we can ask for right, pray and be patient in God's time.
• 2:43
Speaker 2: I know I, as his mother, want the recovery to come much more quickly than what it is, and yet I keep telling myself God's will be done in his time.
• 2:54
Speaker 2: So I think there's probably a lot more each of us need to learn as we go through this time.
• 3:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, thank you.
• 3:01
Speaker 1: So keep Chad, linda's son, chad, in your purse.
• 3:04
Speaker 1: He had a stroke, by the way, and so these are not easy things to get over and it's going to be a little bit of a journey to get back.
• 3:13
Speaker 1: So, anyways, keep Chad and Linda's family in your purse.
• 3:17
Speaker 1: So we are on audience number 90, which John Paul II recorded or presented on August 18, 2024.
• 3:26
Speaker 1: As Linda and I are talking about this, you know John Paul is talking about Christ and the church.
• 3:33
Speaker 1: Christ is the head of the church and the analogy is marriage.
• 3:38
Speaker 1: And as Linda and I are unpacking this, you know husbands, love your wives and submit to your wives.
• 3:45
Speaker 1: Submit and we hate that word, submit, right, what does that mean?
• 3:49
Speaker 2: What does that mean?
• 3:52
Speaker 1: And as Christ is the head of the church and the church submits to him, what do we submit to?
• 3:59
Speaker 1: And this is the important thing, because this goes back, and John Paul makes it very clear in here sometimes you have to go back the other way through the analogy.
• 4:07
Speaker 1: You know, christ loves his church and his church needs to submit, and then point back at marriage.
• 4:14
Speaker 1: What does that mean?
• 4:15
Speaker 1: You know, all you got to do is look up at a cross, linda, and you look at a cross.
• 4:18
Speaker 1: What does that mean?
• 4:20
Speaker 1: I'm submitting to what I'm submitting to.
• 4:22
Speaker 1: Redemption and salvation, of course, is the ultimate thing, but I'm submitting to the bridegroom on the cross who's giving his life totally away from us, every ounce, to the point of death death, as St Paul would say, even on the cross.
• 4:37
Speaker 1: It's an amazing story.
• 4:39
Speaker 1: This is what we miss, isn't it?
• 4:41
Speaker 1: In a relationship we're submitting to one another and John Paul calls it a reciprocal, spousal relationship.
• 4:48
Speaker 1: Reciprocal, meaning it goes back and forth, and let me just make this last point as a woman receives a love from a man, she receives in a giving way, and then a man is supposed to give his love in a receiving way.
• 5:02
Speaker 1: So this is very reciprocal.
• 5:03
Speaker 1: It's going back and forth right away.
• 5:05
Speaker 1: The father we call God the father because he initiates the gift, but as soon as he pours that into the son, the son is receiving it and giving it right back to the father.
• 5:14
Speaker 1: So when the bridegroom comes right and this goes right back to the beginning of the story, ephesians and then I'm going to throw this in your lap here, linda, but Ephesians 1, john Paul mentions in here verse 4, this is the way it's supposed to be, even as he chose us in him, in Christ Jesus.
• 5:36
Speaker 1: So this isn't plan B, linda, when Jesus is hanging on the cross, this is still plan A, because the Father chose us in him, in his Son Jesus Christ, before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.
• 5:52
Speaker 1: He destined us in love.
• 5:54
Speaker 1: He destined us in love to be with him in eternal life, linda.
• 6:00
Speaker 1: So why don't you pick it up from there?
• 6:02
Speaker 1: But this is what our marriages are all about when we struggle.
• 6:05
Speaker 1: So why don't you pick it up from there?
• 6:06
Speaker 1: But this is what our marriages are all about when we struggle.
• 6:08
Speaker 1: You see how far we've fallen from this self-giving love.
• 6:10
Speaker 2: You know there's a couple of levels here, because we are dealing with an analogy, and the Pope has told us that analogies are not perfect.
• 6:18
Speaker 2: Yet this is the best analogy that we have, in that, ultimately, where we're headed is that marriage feast of the Lamb, and so marriage is the perfect way for us to think about.
• 6:32
Speaker 2: What is that ultimate destiny?
• 6:35
Speaker 2: What does that mean?
• 6:36
Speaker 2: Christopher West is famous for having said I can sum this up in five words God wants to marry us, right?
• 6:45
Speaker 2: So marriage becomes a very, very important concept, if you will, of what is this love story really all about.
• 6:54
Speaker 2: And so the heavenly marriage is our goal, really.
• 6:59
Speaker 2: That's the ultimate and that's more real than anything really here on earth.
• 7:04
Speaker 2: But our marriages here on earth point to that marriage, you see, and becomes an icon of that, and I think it was our last recording.
• 7:15
Speaker 2: You know that I said, you know, if we think about how our marriages and that relationship between husband and wife is supposed to look really special to the world, people are supposed to look at the couple and see how they treat each other and what is at the root of their family life and say you know, there's really something special there.
• 7:39
Speaker 2: What is special there.
• 7:41
Speaker 2: It's that divine life in their marriage that comes from that heavenly marriage.
• 7:47
Speaker 2: And this is kind of what the Pope is trying to get us to understand here, that he says that our marriages, excuse me, shines light on God's love.
• 7:59
Speaker 2: That love that says he wants to marry all of us right, so he wants to marry humanity.
• 8:05
Speaker 2: That love which in turn then will shine light on our marriages.
• 8:09
  Speaker 2: So it's a two-way street.
• 8:11
Speaker 2: Essentially, that God's love in the Trinity is the model, and it was shown to us on earth through Christ's love for the church.
• 8:22
Speaker 2: So if we kind of just can put that all together in one circle, I guess, in our head to see how it all interrelates and interacts, so that God's love wanting to marry all of humanity reflected in Christ's love for the church and his total self-giving to the church becoming the model for us in marriage as we learn to reflect Christ's love by being that total self-gift to each other and that results in the fruitfulness of children, and you can just see how that whole cycle is brought visible, as we've talked about that.
• 9:03
Speaker 2: Our bodies bring that invisible sign into the visible world.
• 9:08
Speaker 1: Yeah, when you're saying that.
• 9:11
Speaker 1: You see, we're created in the Imago Dei and that means the image and likeness of God.
• 9:19
Speaker 1: God is a trinity and our marriages and our families open to life, our husband and wife open to life, are given this gift of being able to procreate and able to bring new life into the world, eternal lives into the world.
• 9:36
Speaker 1: So this is what's going to be attacked, linda, and so this gets me what's on my mind from our kicker, so from the Kansas City Chiefs, he's got three Super Bowl rings.
• 9:50
Speaker 1: Harrison Butker's commencement speech at Benedictine College last weekend so leave it to an NFL kicker.
• 9:59
Speaker 1: Paul Kangor writes in Crisis Magazine from May 20th, 24th.
• 10:03
Speaker 1: He said leave it to an NFL kicker to give the culture and church a swift kick.
• 10:10
Speaker 1: The best, boldest commencement address of 2024 was delivered not by some politician or pointy headed professor, but by a guy who kicks field goals for a living.
• 10:21
Speaker 1: And so what he talked about there is what we're talking about here this reciprocal love.
• 10:26
Speaker 1: And he said in there and some of you have probably heard this, but he said in there that before careers come for women and also for men, he mentioned in there that marriage and the family comes first, that you put this first and then work is important.
• 10:44
Speaker 1: Right, we have to work, but it's not the most important thing.
• 10:48
Speaker 1: If we lose track of marriage and the family, this love story, then the rest of the things fall apart.
• 10:54
Speaker 1: So he is attacked savagely, linda, savagely.
• 10:59
Speaker 1: It's amazing and I just say it's the.
• 11:03
Speaker 1: You know, you see the demonic coming out and screaming.
• 11:05
Speaker 1: It's the demonic right, sister Lucia, fatima, the last great battle between our Lord and Satan is going to be over marriage and the family.
• 11:12
Speaker 1: And he said that is why I mean, she said that and our Blessed Mother says this, and it's because of what we described earlier.
• 11:19
Speaker 1: Huh, it's the Imago Dei in the world when you stand up for that you're going to get attacked.
• 11:30
Speaker 2: It's amazing, yeah, and he is a physical body, a person there speaking the reality of this mystery of marriage and Christ and the love for his church.
• 11:37
Speaker 2: It's like he embodied it in his commencement speech.
• 11:41
Speaker 2: So, underneath it all, while he becomes the target as a visible person, it still points to.
• 11:49
Speaker 2: What's really being attacked is that love of Christ and those of us who are trying to reflect that in the world.
• 11:56
Speaker 2: I didn't listen to his speech word for word, so I've heard clips of it, and yet he almost came to tears at one point talking about his wife and the love that they share and her commitment to the family.
• 12:11
Speaker 2: And I really had to reflect on that, jack, because as we think about careers, careers yes, we all need to survive, we have to make money, we have to have jobs, everybody knows that.
• 12:25
Speaker 2: But it's kind of pointless to just go out and have a job and make some money to survive if there's no relationship with people.
• 12:34
Speaker 2: We're all about that communio.
• 12:36
Speaker 2: The communion and marriage is the root of it.
• 12:39
Speaker 2: We know it's the marriage and family, the fundamental cell of society, and so I find it a little bit odd that the vitriol is so much too for whether or not a woman has a career.
• 12:55
Speaker 2: There's all this talk with the feminists you know about oh, we can have it all, and then there's the backlash of no, we can't have it all, and so on.
• 13:02
Speaker 2: It's like what do you mean by having it all?
• 13:10
Speaker 2: Let's look at that for a minute, okay, who are we as human beings first?
• 13:12
Speaker 2: And if you have the communion, if you have the relationship first with our God and then with our family, then you do have it all, and the career and the work is just all secondary to that, because now we've each been given gifts and talents and we need to find ways to use those for the common good for all.
• 13:33
Speaker 2: But for women it does begin with our basic nature of that nurturing and since most women do feel in their hearts that they need to nurture and want to nurture, it's the natural law that it comes through with being fruitful and multiplying with our own children, and the fact that that causes so much angst shows us how far we have gone from understanding who we are as human beings and how God made us.
• 14:03
Speaker 1: Yeah Well, what it is?
• 14:05
Speaker 1: It's just the hypocrisy of this culture and the lies.
• 14:09
Speaker 1: I mean, you know how many women grew up when we did in the 60s and in the 70s just with a lie that said that you know, forget about your heart, disengage from your heart, because your heart is wrong.
• 14:23
Speaker 1: This was the lie.
• 14:24
Speaker 1: Look at whether you become president of the United States as a woman, or the governor, or a senator I mean, they're all over the place doctors, lawyers, whatever.
• 14:32
Speaker 1: But the lie wasn't that.
• 14:35
Speaker 1: The lie was to say you don't need your heart, you don't need to find love, that your fulfillment will come in the career.
• 14:41
  Speaker 1: That's the lie.
• 14:42
Speaker 1: The lie is that we have nothing to do with other people.
• 14:46
Speaker 1: Whether you get married or not is not the main thing.
• 14:49
Speaker 1: The main thing is to become a person of love.
• 14:51
Speaker 1: So what you said about relationships is important.
• 14:53
Speaker 1: Whether you get married or not, you do have that natural inkling and we all do to nurture.
• 14:59
Speaker 1: You know, I mean I was crying when my kids were born.
• 15:03
Speaker 2: Sure, and it's amazing joy right to come to that we do all have that call, and we have to live it out, whether it's spiritual motherhood and spiritual fatherhood, or biological or both.
• 15:17
Speaker 2: That's how we're made to nurture and to love, and that outpouring of love is the root of any culture in any society, which is why the Pope stressed we need to become a culture of love, and he did point out, too, that the family is the school of love, and so all of those things should not be controversial.
• 15:40
Speaker 1: Linda, when you look at this guy, he's a good-looking guy, he's an NFL kicker with three Super Bowl rings, and you can come down and spew vitriol and you don't even know that man.
• 15:54
Speaker 1: And I'll tell you what.
• 15:55
Speaker 1: You have an outstanding young man like that standing up and crying right, tearful, because of the love he has for his wife, his family, and you can attack him because you know.
• 16:08
Speaker 1: I mean, it's the most ridiculous.
• 16:09
Speaker 1: So here we have.
• 16:10
Speaker 1: Dei right, diversity, equity and inclusion.
• 16:13
  Speaker 1: I mean, what a hypocrisy.
• 16:16
Speaker 1: What I think about that diversity and what you know, the only diversity there is is they want a diversity in moral and morality.
• 16:23
Speaker 1: In other words, there is no morality.
• 16:25
Speaker 1: Let's have so much diversity in morality that there is no morality anymore.
• 16:30
Speaker 1: No, absolute truth, no, there's no truth.
• 16:33
Speaker 1: And so when you have somebody speaking the truth of themselves, that doesn't mean everybody has to accept that.
• 16:39
Speaker 1: You know, people can have been lying and stealing and cheating and vitriol forever, right?
• 16:46
Speaker 1: So the the what astounds us and shouldn't astound us anymore, is the attack on somebody.
• 16:54
Speaker 1: Diversity, equity and inclusion, and the only thing, that's the only people that are included are the people with no morals.
• 17:02
Speaker 1: No, anything, no anything, because as soon as somebody stands up.
• 17:06
Speaker 1: Where do you attack?
• 17:07
Speaker 1: And let me just say this last thing who are they attacking?
• 17:10
Speaker 1: The Muslims don't believe in gay marriage and all of these things right.
• 17:16
Speaker 1: They don't believe in killing your own babies.
• 17:19
Speaker 1: But nobody attacks the Muslim.
• 17:21
Speaker 1: You know why they attack Catholics?
• 17:23
Speaker 1: Because of this Imago Dei, because of what we're unpacking here that the Catholic Church really looks at Jesus on the cross as the loving bridegroom who comes in and loves his bride.
• 17:33
Speaker 1: And we really are the Imago Dei.
• 17:35
Speaker 1: The marriage and the family really is a reflection of that, a sacramental sign and they're tied together that it's Jesus Christ, his grace that he pours out to us on the cross, that enlivens us so that we can actually be persons of love.
• 17:52
Speaker 1: Without His Catholic faith, he's not the same man there and that's why they attack Lent, isn't it?
• 17:57
Speaker 2: Yeah, it was interesting that the NFL came out with their statement and said very clearly that Harrison was speaking of his own personal opinions.
• 18:08
Speaker 2: And it did not reflect the NFL belief or policy and that they were all about inclusion.
• 18:16
Speaker 2: And I thought again hypocrisy, because we're all about inclusion, except what this star kicker says.
• 18:25
Speaker 2: We're not including that in our policy.
• 18:28
Speaker 2: And you know unless you stop and reflect on it.
• 18:32
Speaker 2: It may just go right past you, but it's just so hypocritical, it just kind of blows my mind.
• 18:38
Speaker 1: We need to stop and pause on it.
• 18:40
Speaker 1: We need to stop and pause on it so you can see the hypocrisy of our culture, the hypocrisy of twisting and distortion of who we are, linda, today.
• 18:50
Speaker 1: So I'm at Mass today.
• 18:52
Speaker 1: I fell asleep last night.
• 18:54
Speaker 1: I was exhausted and I usually read Scripture for the next day and as I was sitting at Mass today, it's the first time I heard the first reading from James and I want Linda's going to read that.
• 19:06
Speaker 1: Linda, I would read the whole thing.
• 19:10
Speaker 1: It's not that long.
• 19:11
Speaker 1: And just everybody, sit back into what we just said.
• 19:15
Speaker 1: The attack on Harrison Butker, the attack on our Catholic faith.
• 19:23
Speaker 1: And then who's it doing the attack?
• 19:25
  Speaker 1: It's the world.
• 19:26
Speaker 1: Right, and look, they crucified Jesus when he came into the world.
• 19:30
Speaker 1: So we already see this.
• 19:32
Speaker 1: You know this crowd that loves Jesus as he's coming in and because he's healing and feeding people and within a very short time, crucify him.
• 19:40
  Speaker 1: Right, it's amazing.
• 19:42
Speaker 1: Right, we're just hypocrites.
• 19:45
Speaker 1: It's amazing what happens when you take God out.
• 19:49
Speaker 1: The creature itself grows unintelligible.
• 19:53
  Speaker 1: It's amazing.
• 19:53
Speaker 1: The demonic comes in.
• 19:54
Speaker 1: The demonic rules the world, linda, and this is what St James is going to be alluding to the demonic.
• 20:02
Speaker 1: We have to remember that when we come in and throw God out.
• 20:05
Speaker 1: We don't live in a neutral zone, right?
• 20:08
Speaker 1: This is not a neutral zone at a young man that just has a dream for a beautiful family and is willing to give it all away at a commencement speech, probably knowing he's going to be attacked probably not as much as he was because he's at St Benedictine College, a Catholic college, speaking to a Catholic audience, not given a political speech, right?
• 20:39
Speaker 1: And then we're going to go attack him.
• 20:41
Speaker 2: I might add, he did get wonderful applause.
• 20:44
Speaker 2: Yes, he did, so that's encouraging.
• 20:48
Speaker 1: And I think I tried to buy his jersey today.
• 20:52
  Speaker 1: I couldn't get it.
• 20:53
  Speaker 1: They're sold out.
• 20:54
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 20:55
  Speaker 1: I guess they're sold out.
• 20:56
Speaker 1: I went on this website, the website, to get it and you can't buy on.
• 21:02
Speaker 2: So let's reflect, reflect.
• 21:03
Speaker 2: Remember we record on tuesday, and so this is the reading tuesday, may 21st that's a good point um, the letter.
• 21:12
Speaker 2: Uh, reading from the letter of saint james beloved.
• 21:16
Speaker 2: Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from?
• 21:20
Speaker 2: Is it not from your passions that make war within your members?
• 21:25
Speaker 2: You covet but do not possess.
• 21:27
Speaker 2: You kill and envy, but you cannot obtain.
• 21:31
Speaker 2: You fight and wage war.
• 21:33
Speaker 2: You do not possess because you do not ask.
• 21:37
Speaker 2: You ask but do not receive, because you ask, wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
• 21:44
Speaker 2: Adulterers, do you not know that to be a lover of the world means enmity with God?
• 21:50
Speaker 2: Therefore, whoever wants to be a lover of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
• 21:56
Speaker 2: Or do you suppose that the scripture speaks without meaning when it says the spirit that he has made to dwell in us tends toward jealousy, but he bestows a greater grace.
• 22:08
Speaker 2: Therefore it says God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
• 22:13
Speaker 2: So submit yourselves to God.
• 22:16
Speaker 2: Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
• 22:19
Speaker 2: Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.
• 22:23
Speaker 2: Cleanse your hands, you sinners, purify your.
• 22:27
Speaker 2: So here you have in the right from Genesis 3, humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you the word of the Lord.
• 22:44
Speaker 1: So here you have the right from Genesis 3, when Adam and Eve turned to sin and Satan says you can be like God, here's pride, right, you can be like God, you can decide morality, and that's what we're trying to do here today.
• 23:00
Speaker 1: As you're reading that, you see how pride comes up Pride, pride, pride, pride is the number one deadly sin and this is one of the reasons they bash Butker right.
• 23:09
Speaker 1: As for the assertion that Butker bashed Pride Month that's what they're saying, which I didn't hear that he made a mere passing reference to the indisputably outrageous reality.
• 23:19
Speaker 1: Paul Kangor writes that our sick modern culture has elevated the first of the deadly sins, pride, to the level of not a day-long celebration.
• 23:29
Speaker 1: We have pride coming up here, linda, for a whole month of pride.
• 23:34
Speaker 1: It was such a fleeting reference by Butker that it was probably an ad-lib one.
• 23:40
Speaker 1: Nevertheless, if the LGBTQ lobby doesn't like it when we and this is Kangor again, including myself he says, and many crisis writers note this painful theological fact about the vice that they've converted into a month-long holiday, then maybe they should choose a different label, right?
• 23:59
Speaker 1: I mean, can you imagine?
• 24:01
Speaker 1: I wonder if the joke is on them or if they knew this.
• 24:04
Speaker 1: Certainly Satan knows this when he says let's make a pride month and everybody votes pride month in right, the counties, the cities, the states.
• 24:13
Speaker 1: Let's have pride for a whole month.
• 24:16
Speaker 1: One of the top, the top deadly sin.
• 24:20
Speaker 1: And in James just now you hear over and over again humble yourself, humble yourself.
• 24:25
Speaker 1: This is what Jesus does again.
• 24:27
Speaker 1: Can you imagine God of the universe comes into the world and humbles himself?
• 24:31
  Speaker 1: Linda.
• 24:33
  Speaker 2: It's amazing.
• 24:34
Speaker 2: Also in James he talks about purifying your hearts.
• 24:37
Speaker 2: You of two minds Another way of saying the hypocrisy.
• 24:42
Speaker 2: You of two minds, another way of saying the hypocrisy.
• 24:49
Speaker 2: You know that, recognize it and humble yourselves and get rid of the hypocrisy.
• 24:51
Speaker 2: Christ, of course, the best model, and our Mother Mary for humility.
• 24:55
Speaker 2: You know thy will be done, and Jesus prayed that right In the garden.
• 24:59
Speaker 2: Not my will, but thy will be done.
• 25:05
Speaker 2: And Mary as well, you know, be it done unto me according to your will.
• 25:07
Speaker 2: And, and this is really saying here uh, take all of it, take the whole ideology of the pride month and everything else, with the trans, uh, transgender, transhumanism, all of this, we're all just saying, god, we don't want you to be God, we want to be God and by golly we're going to do it.
• 25:28
Speaker 2: You see, and that's, and so that's pride in all sorts of ways emanating.
• 25:35
Speaker 2: And it says, right here, god resists the proud.
• 25:40
Speaker 2: So what are you doing, jack?
• 25:42
Speaker 2: We have to recognize this.
• 25:45
Speaker 1: You know, that's why sometimes I just I don't really lose my patience.
• 25:50
Speaker 1: I know what I'm saying and it's not losing my patience.
• 25:53
Speaker 1: I was going to say I lose my patience and start, you know, just bringing this out in the open, but it's's not losing my patience.
• 25:55
Speaker 1: I was going to say I lose my patience and start just bringing this out in the open, but it's not really losing my patience.
• 26:00
Speaker 1: I realize that we have to wake people up because the world is passing by.
• 26:05
Speaker 1: As John says in the first letter of John, this world is passing by and the lusts of it.
• 26:13
Speaker 1: And here we go and St James starts out talking about the wars and the violence.
• 26:18
Speaker 1: Linda, so what we're talking about here is, when you attack the Imago Dei, marriage and the family, when you throw God out, what is left is the vitriol and the destruction of human nature, the trans movement, transhumanism.
• 26:32
Speaker 1: This is an all, an attack on what it means to be a human person, and twisting and distortion of creation that was created good.
• 26:39
Speaker 1: And at the end of the day, if we don't recognize this, linda, there is no hope.
• 26:44
Speaker 1: There is no hope because where is your hope?
• 26:46
Speaker 1: Then You're going to put hope in.
• 26:48
Speaker 1: What A new political leader.
• 26:49
Speaker 1: You're going to put hope in these people online.
• 26:52
Speaker 1: You know, attacking Harrison In what?
• 26:54
Speaker 1: What are they going to put hope in these people online?
• 26:56
Speaker 1: Attacking Harrison In what?
• 26:56
Speaker 1: What are they going to bring to the table that make the world?
• 26:59
Speaker 1: You mentioned the common good before.
• 27:01
Speaker 1: What good are they bringing in?
• 27:04
Speaker 1: They think this lack of morality and bringing pornography to our kids, mutilate and twisting little person's bodies and this is going to change things.
• 27:14
Speaker 1: Aborting children, sex trafficking, uh, divorce children out of what I mean what?
• 27:21
Speaker 1: What are they bringing that's true, good and beautiful into the world?
• 27:24
Speaker 2: yeah, what is the point you want?
• 27:26
Speaker 1: what is the point?
• 27:26
Speaker 1: Yeah, to ask them, yeah yeah.
• 27:29
Speaker 2: So in the audience today, as you have brought up again and again, you know that the cross of Christ, the Pope says, is planted in the ground.
• 27:40
Speaker 2: Under the feet of this spousal analogy, Christopher West comments that here we witness the totality of Christ's spousal love for the Church, and the Pope in Familiaris Consortio, his letter to families, says that we can understand why.
• 28:02
Speaker 2: In Familiaris Consortio, John Paul describes spouses as the permanent reminder to the church of what happened on the cross.
• 28:12
Speaker 2: And I use that in my classes on marriage because that just strikes me Jack to the core, to the heart, that our marriages are the permanent reminder of what happened on the cross.
• 28:28
Speaker 2: This is my body, given for you, and so submit to our husbands.
• 28:38
Speaker 2: I'm submitting to that same love, if he's doing it as he should be that Christ had for the church, and that's why St Paul says husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church.
• 28:53
Speaker 2: So what I am submitting to is the mission that my husband has to love me with that same love, and it's not going to be perfect, but if he's trying, if he's living that way, of course I want to submit to that.
• 29:10
Speaker 2: I want to be loved.
• 29:12
Speaker 2: That's one of my deepest desires and that's what he's trying to do.
• 29:17
Speaker 2: So in James also, we're supposed to submit to God.
• 29:22
Speaker 2: So why do we have this problem with submission if we understand to what we're actually submitting and becomes beautiful?
• 29:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it does become beautiful.
• 29:35
Speaker 1: And again, when you just said that now about a reminder, a permanent reminder marriage is a reminder of what's going on in the cross.
• 29:43
Speaker 1: Don't forget that that cross is painful.
• 29:45
Speaker 1: You know, I was with my parents this morning and you know they're still, you know, arguing once in a while about little things, you know, and my mom just rolls her eyes.
• 29:56
  Speaker 1: You know my dad's 98.
• 29:58
Speaker 1: I, you know, he's always been pretty stubborn anyways, and uh and uh.
• 30:03
Speaker 1: So she just rolls her eyes, you know, and uh, you know he's he, he, he loves everybody, he, you know, but he can't see anymore, he can't hear anymore.
• 30:12
  Speaker 1: He's frustrated a little bit too, but he's a, he's a, you know, he tries.
• 30:15
Speaker 1: My mom's trying, I'm sitting there trying, uh, we're waiting for a doctor to call about his eyes, and uh, and so while this is going on, you're, it's a reminder that we have to be self-sacrificial, love, otherwise you're just going to get mad.
• 30:29
Speaker 1: You know, you're going to lose your patience every 15 minutes.
• 30:32
Speaker 1: And my mom has grown so much over the years with that, you know, being able to just roll their eyes, and I don't mean in a sarcastic way, I mean like, oh God, please give me the grace to get through this moment, you know.
• 30:45
  Speaker 2: Exactly.
• 30:46
Speaker 1: And where are we headed.
• 30:46
Speaker 1: So John Paul alludes to Revelation 19, verse 7 in here, and actually, if you get a chance, everybody read that whole chapter 19.
• 30:58
  Speaker 1: It's amazing.
• 30:59
Speaker 1: But let us rejoice and exalt and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and his bride has made herself ready.
• 31:07
Speaker 1: It was granted to her to be clothed with fine linen, bright and pure, and for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saint, and the angel said.
• 31:18
Speaker 1: So that's where we're going with this.
• 31:28
Speaker 1: And to your point, linda, until you open yourself widely to God in your suffering, in your pain, in your seeking patience, fortitude, I, until you open yourself widely to God in your suffering and your pain and you're seeking patience, fortitude, courage, um, until you do that, you won't know, I don't think you'll know the story.
• 31:43
Speaker 1: You know God will pour himself into your heart.
• 31:45
Speaker 1: Uh, you'll change as you give yourself away.
• 31:49
  Speaker 1: It's just, it's a way, it's that's what's going to go.
• 31:51
Speaker 1: But don't try to give yourself away without opening yourself up to grace, because then you'll just empty yourself.
• 31:56
  Speaker 1: You know right.
• 31:58
Speaker 1: So allow Christ to empty himself on the cross, pour himself into you so that you have your tank right, you have your tank full so you can pour it out to other people and keep turning to him and filling it up again.
• 32:11
Speaker 1: That's the way it works.
• 32:12
Speaker 2: Absolutely, and we can't get around the fact that love requires suffering.
• 32:17
Speaker 2: Love is suffering in many ways.
• 32:20
Speaker 2: The reflection for the readings from today is written by Servant of God Luis Maria Martinez, an archbishop from Mexico back in the 50s, and just a few key points that he brought out as a part of this.
• 32:37
Speaker 2: He says the love of Christ flows chiefly from his wounds, from his suffering.
• 32:43
Speaker 2: Isn't that true in our marriages, jack?
• 32:46
Speaker 2: That when the suffering begins, when the problems begin, that's really when our love flows, if we're trying to love as Christ loved.
• 32:55
Speaker 2: Otherwise it goes the other way.
• 32:58
Speaker 1: Yeah, you get angry, frustrated, walk away.
• 33:01
Speaker 1: Right, how many people have walked away from tough you know, with a kid, because a child maybe is born handicapped or something, and somebody walks away from the marriage and leaves the right Because we're not willing to sacrifice.
• 33:14
Speaker 1: You know, and look at, these are difficult things.
• 33:16
Speaker 2: We're not willing to sacrifice, we're not willing to suffer, I'm not going to do this, I'm not going to suffer.
• 33:23
Speaker 2: He goes on in his meditation here to say that the church, which is Christ perpetuating himself on earth, is a bundle of myrrh.
• 33:33
Speaker 2: He's making an analogy here to the fragrance of the suffering and he says when persecutions wound her, the church and persecutions are never wanting she profusely radiates the good odor of Christ in all directions.
• 33:50
Speaker 2: Harrison Butler, as a solid, staunch, devout Catholic, in many ways was representing the Church at that point.
• 33:59
  Speaker 1: Yes, he was.
• 34:02
Speaker 2: He believes what the Church teaches, which is.
• 34:04
Speaker 2: Christ's teaching and he was expounding on it.
• 34:08
Speaker 2: And was he not then radiating that good odor of Christ, that love of Christ, and look how it gets attacked?
• 34:13
Speaker 2: But that odor, that good odor of Christ, that love of Christ, and look how it gets attacked.
• 34:16
Speaker 1: But that odor, that good odor of Christ, when you see him, linda, even while he's getting attacked, that odor even exudes more, because what you really see then is the weeds and the wheat together.
• 34:29
Speaker 1: You see the vitriol, the evil right, the violence, the attacks just spewing out of people's mouth.
• 34:36
Speaker 1: And then you see this beautiful young man up there that loves his wife and his family and loves God and says you know, this is all a love story, it's always been a love story.
• 34:47
Speaker 1: And when you attack love and the personification of love, doesn't that ooze that myrrh?
• 34:53
Speaker 1: I mean, doesn't that ooze that, that myrrh?
• 34:58
Speaker 1: I mean that's what it really oozes, because because then you see starkly the dark and the gray against this beautiful light that he is.
• 35:04
Speaker 2: You know right and I have to believe that he knew these kinds of reactions would happen or could happen, at least right or?
• 35:12
Speaker 2: Could happen, yeah, um, and yet you know where did he find the courage to carry on with it?
• 35:20
Speaker 2: Um, he's in touch with that divine love, that mercy, you see, and that, and so all of us can be like that if we're in touch with that divine mystery, that trinitarian love that our marriages reflect.
• 35:36
Speaker 1: Yeah, he's encountered Jesus Christ in his life and the grace to do that exactly what you just said.
• 35:42
Speaker 1: Otherwise, why would he do it?
• 35:43
Speaker 1: What's the advantage to going out in the public and getting attacked?
• 35:49
Speaker 1: Right, because we innately when Christ fills us.
• 35:52
Speaker 1: We can't hold it in.
• 35:53
Speaker 1: I remember Jeremiah, you duped me, lord.
• 35:54
Speaker 1: You duped me again.
• 35:55
Speaker 1: The Old Testament, us.
• 35:55
Speaker 1: We can't hold it in.
• 35:55
Speaker 1: I remember Jeremiah, you dupe me, lord.
• 35:56
Speaker 1: You dupe me again.
• 35:57
Speaker 1: The Old Testament prophet right, he didn't want to speak anymore.
• 36:00
  Speaker 1: He's had it.
• 36:01
Speaker 1: Right, he's got his beard plucked and all kinds of things are happening to him and he says I'm not doing this anymore.
• 36:06
Speaker 1: And he walks away and then a little while later he's out there doing it again.
• 36:10
Speaker 1: He goes you dupe me, lord, I can't hold it in anymore.
• 36:13
Speaker 1: Well, that's what happens when you're filled with the grace of God.
• 36:16
Speaker 1: You have to go into the world and bring what's true, good and beautiful into the world, and especially the beauty of love.
• 36:23
Speaker 2: Yeah, I think St Paul also said something similar.
• 36:26
Speaker 2: Woe to me if I do not preach Christ crucified.
• 36:32
  Speaker 1: John Paul II.
• 36:32
Speaker 1: Right, I mean one after another, aren't they?
• 36:34
Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, after another, aren't they?
• 36:36
  Speaker 2: Yes, yes.
• 36:36
Speaker 1: Hey, let's wind this up, Linda.
• 36:37
Speaker 1: Any last comments that take us out of here.
• 36:41
Speaker 2: Well, again, if this seemed too ethereal, not real practical, I would say we can bring it right down and say if I, from listening to this, the next moment on, say I need to find a way to love more, and how am I going to do that?
• 37:00
Speaker 2: Hey, send a little cute emoji to your husband or to your wife thinking about you I love you.
• 37:05
Speaker 2: Right, work on that visible sign of your love, have more patience.
• 37:12
Speaker 2: All of those things that we've addressed.
• 37:14
Speaker 2: Just pick one and just do it for today and see what happens and you'll see that this is what we're talking about, is very real and it will bring you into that love.
• 37:25
  Speaker 1: Yeah, all right.
• 37:26
Speaker 1: Hey, god bless you.
• 37:27
Speaker 1: Thanks, linda, great to be with you, great to be with everyone.
• 37:30
Speaker 1: Talk to you again next week.
• 37:31
  Speaker 1: Bye-bye, thanks, jack.
