- 0:37Speaker 1: in with maybe towards the end with Amanda Baron and
- 0:40Speaker 1: in the two o'clock hour today on Metro Moves Midday.
- 0:43Speaker 1: So we're gonna have a pretty good day as far
- 0:45Speaker 1: as things like that goes. And we're gonna have a
- 0:46Speaker 1: good day on the radio this morning as well. Joining
- 0:49Speaker 1: me in the first segment here, Steve Animal from ninety
- 0:52Speaker 1: eight to seven the Mountain is going to join us.
- 0:53Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about what's going on at five Street
- 0:56Speaker 1: because you got some beer going on over there again.
- 0:58Speaker 1: And we're back we're back.
- 1:00Speaker 2: We are, and thank you for lowering your standards and
- 1:02Speaker 2: allowing me on here.
- 1:04Speaker 1: I appreciate your coming down. We got a lot of
- 1:06Speaker 1: stuff we're going to talk to Steve about about some
- 1:08Speaker 1: classic music. So hey, if you have a question for Seef,
- 1:10Speaker 1: you're welcome give us a call three through four, three four, five,
- 1:11Speaker 1: fifty eight, fifty eight. You're more than welcome to do that.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Later on in the program, we're also going to have
- 1:15Speaker 1: Steven Allen Adams here from OUTGA Newspapers. I'm going to
- 1:18Speaker 1: get his opinion on the Pittsburgh Post Gazette closing. For
- 1:21Speaker 1: one thing, that's a huge story in our region. Pittsburgh
- 1:24Speaker 1: is going to be the largest city in the country
- 1:26Speaker 1: without a daily newspapers. Yeah. Yeah, they're going to close
- 1:30Speaker 1: in May. They've been two hundred and forty years. It's
- 1:33Speaker 1: a newspaper and they're shutting their doors and it's going
- 1:35Speaker 1: to leave Pittsburgh without a daily newspaper, believe it or not,
- 1:38Speaker 1: no daily newspaper daily, that's right, Thank god, they're pretty
- 1:43Speaker 1: much all gone. Plus up, we have the upcoming legislative
- 1:45Speaker 1: session and what all that means with tax breaks or
- 1:49Speaker 1: no tax breaks, things like that. We'll get Steven's idea
- 1:51Speaker 1: on what to expect in the upcoming legislative session. And
- 1:54Speaker 1: then towards the end of the program, speaking of that,
- 1:56Speaker 1: I've invited onto the program one Hoppy Kruschival is going
- 1:59Speaker 1: to be with it, and I wanted to talk to Hoppy,
- 2:01Speaker 1: not so much about what to expect with this legislative session,
- 2:04Speaker 1: because of course Hopy is in retirement more or less,
- 2:07Speaker 1: and he's handed that off to TJ and Dave. However,
- 2:11Speaker 1: it was Hoppy's back for a long time man, and
- 2:13Speaker 1: so I want to get the documentary perspective from Hoppy.
- 2:16Speaker 1: What made you go do it? What some of your
- 2:18Speaker 1: best experiences things like that.
- 2:19Speaker 2: I was reading actually the Daily Mail over the weekend
- 2:22Speaker 2: and Hoppy has a column in there, and yeah, it
- 2:25Speaker 2: was nice to see. It's like he really hasn't retired.
- 2:28Speaker 2: He still does some stuff. Yeah, he's doing He's still
- 2:31Speaker 2: doing a ton of stuff. So yeah, he is far
- 2:33Speaker 2: from Urchan, just.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Not the Daily Show. So that's what we're going to
- 2:35Speaker 1: do for you on the radio today. So if you
- 2:37Speaker 1: have any questions during the time, you can send us
- 2:39Speaker 1: a text line. That's the threeser of four none, three, five,
- 2:41Speaker 1: fives years of your eight threes are four nine three
- 2:43Speaker 1: five fives years or eight. You can also call us
- 2:45Speaker 1: this morning threezer of four three four five fifty fifteen. Well,
- 2:47Speaker 1: it's no news to anybody that we are back in
- 2:49Speaker 1: twenty twenty six, which means that a lot of things
- 2:52Speaker 1: that maybe went on pause or hiatus over the holiday season,
- 2:56Speaker 1: we're starting to get back into the swing of things.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And that's things all around the city and the valley
- 3:00Speaker 1: and things like that. But one of the things that
- 3:01Speaker 1: we do, and that is Steve Animal over at five
- 3:04Speaker 1: Street Brewing here in downtown Charleston. And then that comes
- 3:07Speaker 1: back tonight.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Yes it does. Now normally it's the first and third
- 3:10Speaker 2: Thursdays of the month, but being January first was the.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Holiday very important.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Yes, so they shut down so their friends and family
- 3:17Speaker 2: could all enjoy, and so we're firing it back up tonight.
- 3:20Speaker 2: It's going to be a good time, starting at four
- 3:23Speaker 2: o'clock before I get there. If you like potato chips,
- 3:26Speaker 2: and who doesn't, they're doing a potato chip and beer pairing,
- 3:30Speaker 2: which should be pretty that's very interesting.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Sure, homemade homemade potato.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Chat like so I saw it up online. I said okay,
- 3:37Speaker 2: so they have all kinds of difference, Yes, the different chips.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I talked to John Q, the manager over there, and
- 3:42Speaker 2: he's like, yeah, we're going to be doing that beforehand.
- 3:44Speaker 2: So I was like, well, very cool, and the weather
- 3:47Speaker 2: is going to be phenomenal. You want to sit outside tonight.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Oh my god, come come, come, come come outside.
- 3:53Speaker 1: It's gonna be great at sixty right, sixty or anything,
- 3:56Speaker 1: going to be sixty two or sixty three at six
- 3:59Speaker 1: o'clock still, so I'm looking forward to it. Yeah, that
- 4:02Speaker 1: is that is very that's very exceptional. So you guys
- 4:05Speaker 1: will be over there. What time is the festivities get
- 4:07Speaker 1: started for you?
- 4:08Speaker 2: So I start setting up about five forty five, six o'clock,
- 4:12Speaker 2: things fire up. I have flowers from Art's Flowers and Dunbar.
- 4:15Speaker 2: I have gift certificates. I have limited edition Mountain Steve
- 4:19Speaker 2: Animal T shirts we give away.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Those are great.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Yeah, those are awesome. And I also have my beer
- 4:25Speaker 2: Animal Ale that's right now. I know it's sold out
- 4:28Speaker 2: right now, but they will be brewing more So. I
- 4:31Speaker 2: feel very blessed and honored to have a beer at
- 4:35Speaker 2: one of my favorite places. And the food is awesome.
- 4:37Speaker 2: So you should come hungry, like this buffalo grilled cheese thing.
- 4:42Speaker 2: It's really really good.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I haven't breakfast yet, So let's not talk too much
- 4:46Speaker 1: about food because that's started to sound pretty good. And
- 4:48Speaker 1: you talk about your limited edition T shirts. I had
- 4:50Speaker 1: to go through a special triplicate form just to get
- 4:52Speaker 1: one of those, Like I had the regular Mountain T shirt,
- 4:54Speaker 1: you know, I mean they get one of those first.
- 4:56Speaker 1: But to get like the Collector's edition, the Steve the
- 4:59Speaker 1: Animal Mountain T shirt, I had to go through some
- 5:01Speaker 1: you know, I had a paperwork man, Yeah, go through
- 5:04Speaker 1: an interview. Like I finally got one. I keep it
- 5:07Speaker 1: hung on my walle at home and only wear every
- 5:09Speaker 1: once in a while. I can autograph it with my
- 5:10Speaker 1: silver Sharply Different Life. So that's going to be a
- 5:13Speaker 1: five street broom tonight. You can go over there and
- 5:15Speaker 1: catch Steve Animals going to be over there, and and
- 5:18Speaker 1: then are you gonna be over there next Thursday as
- 5:20Speaker 1: well to catch up.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah, So usually first and third Thursdays, and then next
- 5:23Speaker 2: Thursday is going to be pretty cool. It's Mountain Stage night,
- 5:26Speaker 2: So Bob Thompson's going to be there, John Ingram's will
- 5:29Speaker 2: be there. Jeff Sureley, my buddy, he'll be there of course,
- 5:31Speaker 2: and some of the other crew and yeah, so it's
- 5:34Speaker 2: going to be a great party and just lots of fun.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Fife Street voted the best happy hour place in Charleston,
- 5:41Speaker 2: so that's great kinda, it's nice and fun to be
- 5:44Speaker 2: a part of it.
- 5:45Speaker 1: So I'll go anywhere that where you have Johnny Ingram
- 5:48Speaker 1: and setting up to play music as I'm kind and
- 5:50Speaker 1: Bob Thompson. You get Bob Thompson and John Ingram in
- 5:52Speaker 1: a room. I'm there man. Yeah, it's because it's gonna
- 5:54Speaker 1: be cool.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Absolutely, and it's it's a lot of fun. Just grab
- 5:57Speaker 2: your friends, like even here, Rob Reel from our sister
- 6:00Speaker 2: station ninety six, Daniel Woods comes down, some of our staff,
- 6:05Speaker 2: Tracy he'll show up, Bobby he'll show and it's kind
- 6:08Speaker 2: of like a big party.
- 6:08Speaker 1: So fantastic time. Yeah, it's a great time. So you
- 6:11Speaker 1: can check out out over five Street starting. It's gonna
- 6:13Speaker 1: be tonight and tomorrow and then we'll get back on
- 6:14Speaker 1: the regular schedule of the first and third of every Thursday.
- 6:17Speaker 1: So that's going to be a Steve Animal from ninety
- 6:19Speaker 1: eight seven to the Mountain. A couple more minutes with
- 6:20Speaker 1: Steve here, and I thought, I was, We're going to
- 6:23Speaker 1: have one every year on Hotline after the show we
- 6:25Speaker 1: do in the afternoon. We have a rock book author,
- 6:28Speaker 1: his name is Chris mcclintook, who comes on every year
- 6:31Speaker 1: and he'll talk about the upcoming concerts and things like that,
- 6:34Speaker 1: and we have a generally a classic rock vibe on
- 6:37Speaker 1: the show, so we talk about a lot of the
- 6:39Speaker 1: I do listen I do. I hear that you do
- 6:41Speaker 1: do some pretty good stuff with classic rock over over
- 6:43Speaker 1: the time. So I thought that we could talk a
- 6:45Speaker 1: little bit about some of these some of these shows
- 6:47Speaker 1: that are going to be coming around in twenty twenty
- 6:49Speaker 1: six and how you feel about them, like the hot
- 6:51Speaker 1: and cold of these types of shows. The first thing
- 6:53Speaker 1: I wanted to ask about because I have been on
- 6:55Speaker 1: this huge playlist that I made recently. I recently made
- 6:57Speaker 1: this playlist that's it's about seven hundre songs that's from
- 7:00Speaker 1: nineteen sixty five to two thousand and five, okay, and
- 7:03Speaker 1: I did it's curated, so I went through and found
- 7:06Speaker 1: like top albums, like experimental music, genre breakers, like all
- 7:11Speaker 1: these different things to create this playlist. I like it
- 7:13Speaker 1: a lot but I've gone through like I've always listened
- 7:16Speaker 1: to music from all eras, but I've been listening to
- 7:19Speaker 1: a lot of music and being reintroduced to music that
- 7:21Speaker 1: I'd forgotten about. Like I know all the sixties and
- 7:23Speaker 1: seventies music that are the headliners and stuff, and I've
- 7:26Speaker 1: heard it all, but you hear stuff that was like
- 7:28Speaker 1: a great hit in nineteen seventy four that maybe wasn't
- 7:31Speaker 1: by one of the great bands that carried on a
- 7:33Speaker 1: one hit was exactly or even three hit wonders that
- 7:35Speaker 1: you just kind of forget about, you know. But I
- 7:37Speaker 1: was thinking one of the bands that are that's making
- 7:39Speaker 1: a reunion tour this year that I was really surprised
- 7:41Speaker 1: about is the Guess Who. Yes, so the Guess Who
- 7:43Speaker 1: is coming back, and it's it's still a great name
- 7:45Speaker 1: because you could kind of guess who's going to be
- 7:47Speaker 1: part of the band. I just played them this morning.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I love the Guess Who. But but there's some controversy
- 7:52Speaker 1: about the naming and the people that's going to be
- 7:53Speaker 1: in the band and stuff like that. But if the
- 7:55Speaker 1: Guess Who was coming near by high or cold, is
- 7:57Speaker 1: that a band you'd want to go see? I would
- 7:58Speaker 1: go see them. I think I would too.
- 8:00Speaker 2: I did not get to see them in their heyday obviously,
- 8:03Speaker 2: so it'll be uh, you know, the best version they
- 8:05Speaker 2: can offer.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Whatever that is, right.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Clear, dude. Some of them are on life support, some
- 8:13Speaker 2: of them are still kicking. But yeah, I would go
- 8:15Speaker 2: see it.
- 8:16Speaker 1: So. Yes. Another big, big news in the Classic rock
- 8:18Speaker 1: front is there's rumors that Getty and Alex are going
- 8:21Speaker 1: to be playing some more shows together for Rush, that
- 8:24Speaker 1: they might be doing a tour and it's going to
- 8:25Speaker 1: be a little closer to actually Rush. That's going to
- 8:28Speaker 1: be out there hot or cold one seeing Rush. Yeah,
- 8:31Speaker 1: I would go see that show, especially if you're talking
- 8:33Speaker 1: about a little bit of a reunion. There.
- 8:35Speaker 2: A friend of mine from Boston, Donna Halper, she was
- 8:37Speaker 2: one of the first DJs who broke them back in Philly,
- 8:40Speaker 2: and I think it was MMR she was on. But
- 8:44Speaker 2: she's still in contact with them, so it's kind of
- 8:46Speaker 2: neat to get the you know, her pulse, she's right
- 8:49Speaker 2: on it, so I always check her page every couple
- 8:52Speaker 2: of days and yeah, so definitely it's going to be
- 8:55Speaker 2: a great tour.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I would look forward to seeing that one. A
- 8:58Speaker 1: couple of them that I'm not well a couple of them,
- 9:00Speaker 1: I'm not sure what you feel about, Like, what about
- 9:02Speaker 1: a band like Blue Oyster Cold. Does that have to
- 9:04Speaker 1: do much for you? You fear the me when we
- 9:06Speaker 1: still play them.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I don't know if they would have that, people would
- 9:10Speaker 2: be going crazy about.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Oh god, it's not the same. Yeah. Right, let's see
- 9:14Speaker 1: Robert Plant's going to be on touriling. I think he can.
- 9:17Speaker 1: He owes us a show here in charlestonow. Yes, he does.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I remember he canceled.
- 9:21Speaker 2: I had tickets for it back in the Me Too,
- 9:23Speaker 2: Me Too, Yeah, the Neverland tour that never landed unfortunately,
- 9:28Speaker 2: Heat Loaf and there were a couple others.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Always No, I'm talking that must have been even farther ago.
- 9:33Speaker 1: He was actually supposed to be here during COVID as well. Yes,
- 9:36Speaker 1: and he canceled that show. And I've been told that
- 9:38Speaker 1: he's going to make it up, but I don't know when.
- 9:40Speaker 2: I was kind of hoping, like when they announced the
- 9:42Speaker 2: Wheeling show, that he would have started here.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I know there, so I'd love to go see planting.
- 9:47Speaker 1: I haven't had a chance to see plant yet. So
- 9:48Speaker 1: we're on the same okay. Eric Clapton, Eric Clapton is
- 9:50Speaker 1: apparently doing this more like house shows. He doesn't do
- 9:53Speaker 1: concerts anymore. It's like these intimate little settings where he'll
- 9:56Speaker 1: just play guitar or whatever. He does have any interest
- 9:58Speaker 1: in that, Yes, he wouldn't see that him. I think
- 10:01Speaker 1: that would be interesting, you know.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Like I had the opportunity to see BB King years
- 10:06Speaker 2: ago at the Auditorium and it was just trying to
- 10:10Speaker 2: think Bonamasso opened up for him, and I actually had
- 10:13Speaker 2: him in the studio and fortunate enough to go pre
- 10:17Speaker 2: show and hang out with BB King and Bonamasso before
- 10:21Speaker 2: the show.
- 10:22Speaker 1: That is awesome.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Yeah, And I wish I had like cell phones back
- 10:26Speaker 2: in the day, you know, for the pictures and stuff.
- 10:28Speaker 2: You know, you have your memories now, Yeah, all I
- 10:30Speaker 2: have is like I'm sitting where you're at. Bob's there
- 10:33Speaker 2: and I'm about a few feet closer and he's got
- 10:36Speaker 2: his guitar in his hand, he's just leaning on it. Yeah,
- 10:40Speaker 2: I mean, it's just like one of those things. It's
- 10:41Speaker 2: still burned in my head. So it's I've been very
- 10:45Speaker 2: fortunate through the years to see a lot of great
- 10:47Speaker 2: shows come through Charleston.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Steve Animal here from ninety eight to seven the Mountain.
- 10:51Speaker 1: They're going to be back at five Street tonight, sop
- 10:53Speaker 1: five Street brewing. A couple more hotter cold concert questions here,
- 10:57Speaker 1: and then I'll cutch a loose Steve one of the
- 10:59Speaker 1: guys that want my bucket list. I don't know how
- 11:01Speaker 1: how you feel about him, but David Byrne has been
- 11:04Speaker 1: on tour for a while now, and I've heard that
- 11:06Speaker 1: tour is absolutely amazing. I'm sure it.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Would be amazing. I've never seen him in concert. I
- 11:10Speaker 2: forget one of the show's award shows this past year
- 11:14Speaker 2: and he was on it.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I was just like, it's still amazing. He sounds great.
- 11:18Speaker 1: He does. I mean when you hear him do any
- 11:21Speaker 1: of the stuff from talking Heads or anything else that
- 11:23Speaker 1: he does in the big shows that he puts on,
- 11:25Speaker 1: he still sounds absolutely amazing.
- 11:28Speaker 2: That didn't burn out their vocals. Like when Pat Benattar
- 11:30Speaker 2: came to the Clay Center this year, it's like Bravo
- 11:33Speaker 2: on point man.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Yeah, he's still seeing absolutely she was on it. Let's
- 11:37Speaker 1: see we have farewell tours from Megadeath. Apparently Megadeth fan.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I have to say I did not know that. Thank you.
- 11:46Speaker 1: I love a Sheltered Life. You need to make sure that
- 11:48Speaker 1: you find Megadeth. Leonard Skinnered. I'll go ahead.
- 11:50Speaker 2: I'm yeah, so Megadeth if you are a fan. Sunday
- 11:53Speaker 2: Night's seven o'clock. Charlie Kendall, a good buddy of mine,
- 11:55Speaker 2: does Metal Shop. It's full hour of interviews, all the
- 11:58Speaker 2: old stuff like Pantera, Mega Death and now all that stuff.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Sunday Night, seven o'clock on the Mountain. You can catch that.
- 12:04Speaker 1: It's crazy. Is I go back and listen to stuff
- 12:07Speaker 1: like uh, Megadeath now and back when they first came out,
- 12:11Speaker 1: Like I was like it was noise to me. Like
- 12:13Speaker 1: now I listened to its like, man, there was a dude.
- 12:16Speaker 1: It's good. Yeah, it's like it's not what I remember
- 12:18Speaker 1: when I was a kid. Like I've listened to actually
- 12:20Speaker 1: quite a bit of Mega Death in the last couple
- 12:22Speaker 1: of weeks, and it's like it's it's not on your playlist,
- 12:24Speaker 1: it is? It is? It is now, Judas Priest, how
- 12:27Speaker 1: about Jesis Priest coming out? Definitely, Jethro Tall is going
- 12:29Speaker 1: to be on tour.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Oh, Like I like Tall, but I don't know if
- 12:34Speaker 2: I would make the play today. Yeah, after all that
- 12:39Speaker 2: chain smoking, right, let's.
- 12:42Speaker 1: See anybody else in here that looks interesting.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Uh.
- 12:44Speaker 1: We've had Alice Cooper on Hotline before. I'd love to
- 12:46Speaker 1: go see Alice Cooper us.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Uh.
- 12:48Speaker 2: He's one of the ones I met in the eighties.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Uh.
- 12:51Speaker 2: He played a show when I was working in Providence
- 12:54Speaker 2: and uh uh.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Middle of the night.
- 12:56Speaker 2: He's another one who pulled up at the station knocking
- 12:59Speaker 2: on the way and it was during his poison tour
- 13:02Speaker 2: and a nice guy.
- 13:04Speaker 1: We had him on Hotline. Yeah, and we had a
- 13:06Speaker 1: two part interview with him and Dave Weekly. It's a
- 13:08Speaker 1: very gifted interviewer. So he got Alice into things that
- 13:12Speaker 1: he hadn't talked about forever. Had him talking about leaving
- 13:14Speaker 1: Little keel Wells for his wife and all these different things,
- 13:17Speaker 1: all these great stories, right, and Alice's producer after we
- 13:21Speaker 1: ended the interview, Alice's producer called me back. It was like, Man,
- 13:24Speaker 1: Alice had such a great time. He's still here. Now,
- 13:27Speaker 1: do you want to connect and let him cut some
- 13:28Speaker 1: liners for your show because he would love to do it. Yeah,
- 13:31Speaker 1: what's the coolest thing? And he did and I still
- 13:34Speaker 1: have him. It was really one of the coolest things.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Another fellow Detroit ter Yeah, there you go man, that's right. Yeah,
- 13:38Speaker 1: you got to stick together. Although I'm not from Detroit,
- 13:40Speaker 1: I was born in Charlotte, Michigan, and lived a decent
- 13:43Speaker 1: amount of time near Detroit, so I hear where you're

- 16:51Speaker 1: I appreciate Steve Animal being with us here in the
- 16:53Speaker 1: first segment. Steven Allen Adams is joining us now from
- 16:56Speaker 1: Augden Newspapers, and we have plenty of things we're gonna
- 16:58Speaker 1: talk about. How you doing today?
- 16:59Speaker 10: Man a not too.
- 17:00Speaker 11: I don't know if he saw the breaking news that
- 17:03Speaker 11: just came out right at nine a m. But you
- 17:05Speaker 11: know we're gonna be talking about sort of legislative session preview.
- 17:10Speaker 11: But the longest serving state senator, Senator Donna Bowley of
- 17:15Speaker 11: Pleasants County Republican ninety, is resigning. And I just talked
- 17:21Speaker 11: to her on the phone. I got heads up about
- 17:23Speaker 11: ten minutes before to put out the press release, talked
- 17:25Speaker 11: to her on the phone. You know, naturally, she's having
- 17:28Speaker 11: some health issues being older. She has to go to
- 17:30Speaker 11: physical therapy up in Morgantown, and she is choosing her health.
- 17:37Speaker 11: She can't do both travel to Morgantown for physical therapy
- 17:39Speaker 11: and travel here Monday through Friday or however long for
- 17:43Speaker 11: the floor sessions and committee meetings and that sort of thing.
- 17:46Speaker 11: So she's she says, she's just gonna do the smart
- 17:49Speaker 11: move and go ahead and resign and let the next
- 17:51Speaker 11: generation take over.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Wow, that's really amazing. We've seen a couple of those recently, then,
- 17:55Speaker 1: I guess, right, of long standing folks that are bowing out.
- 17:58Speaker 10: Oh yeah, a couple couple change for sure.
- 18:01Speaker 11: But in the case of Senator Donald Bowley again ninety
- 18:04Speaker 11: appointed by former Lake Governor Archmore nineteen eighty five, at
- 18:09Speaker 11: one point was the only Republican and the thirty four
- 18:12Speaker 11: member state Senate.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Wow.
- 18:15Speaker 11: Tech I mean technically she was a member of every
- 18:18Speaker 11: committee because she had to have a Republican on all
- 18:20Speaker 11: of them, so she could go to any committee she
- 18:22Speaker 11: wanted to, depending on what the was on the agenda
- 18:25Speaker 11: or whatnot. She could go to all of them because
- 18:27Speaker 11: she was technically a member of all of them. And
- 18:30Speaker 11: she's had different leadership positions. She was the longtime Republican
- 18:33Speaker 11: National Committee woman in the state for probably more than
- 18:38Speaker 11: a decade, and just and I feel a little bit biased,
- 18:43Speaker 11: but I've known I'm from Pleasants County. So when I
- 18:46Speaker 11: was in high school, she worked a lot with me
- 18:49Speaker 11: and some of our young people that were interested in
- 18:52Speaker 11: politics and talking about politics.
- 18:55Speaker 10: So I go way back with her.
- 18:57Speaker 11: And so it's a huge institutetional loss for the state
- 19:02Speaker 11: Senate for sure. But I think you know, they'll submit
- 19:07Speaker 11: some names to the governor, three names of the governor
- 19:09Speaker 11: to find a replacement. I've been told to dell Gate,
- 19:12Speaker 11: Trent and Barnhart from up there might be probably a
- 19:14Speaker 11: favorite for that storied career.
- 19:17Speaker 1: And there's something to be said to that you just
- 19:20Speaker 1: mentioned there, how she had outreached that kind of harvested
- 19:25Speaker 1: some of your interests when you were younger in politics
- 19:27Speaker 1: and different things like that. I'm not saying that there's
- 19:29Speaker 1: not that level of engagement anymore, but it's something that
- 19:31Speaker 1: we want to make sure that we continue, that we
- 19:33Speaker 1: have access to our politicians, that we have people that
- 19:35Speaker 1: are on the ground level talking to kids and students,
- 19:38Speaker 1: not in a political raw raw your party this you're
- 19:41Speaker 1: part of that, but in a very civic, engaged, responsible way,
- 19:45Speaker 1: because kids need to learn these things and get engaged
- 19:47Speaker 1: and get interested in a non I guess partisan manner.
- 19:51Speaker 1: They just need to be engaged.
- 19:52Speaker 11: It doesn't happen as much as it used to, for sure, unfortunately.
- 19:57Speaker 11: And and there's sort of a that I feel like
- 20:00Speaker 11: it's that gets filled and it gets filled with say,
- 20:03Speaker 11: TikTok information or social media, and I think that's why
- 20:07Speaker 11: you see a lot of sort of bad things. You
- 20:09Speaker 11: see some of the French partisanship that you see out there,
- 20:14Speaker 11: and it's driven by social media. But when you have
- 20:17Speaker 11: human interaction with somebody who like Senator Bowley, who is
- 20:23Speaker 11: a longtime Republican conservative, more in a traditional sense than
- 20:27Speaker 11: sort of what we currently think of conservatism, it makes
- 20:31Speaker 11: a difference in people's lives and people can kind of
- 20:33Speaker 11: see that sort of stuff and inspires people not always
- 20:35Speaker 11: to go into Republican politics, for sure. I mean I
- 20:38Speaker 11: went into journalism, but it does make a difference.
- 20:42Speaker 1: I think this is kind of a related story before
- 20:43Speaker 1: we get to the legislative stuff. A hardcorn messaging. Of course,
- 20:46Speaker 1: I have to speak to you, as being a print
- 20:48Speaker 1: journalist about the closing of the Pittsburgh newspapers and just
- 20:55Speaker 1: from a I mean, for one thing, it's been around
- 20:57Speaker 1: for over two undred years on this hundred fifty years.
- 20:59Speaker 1: As it goes on and you look at a city
- 21:00Speaker 1: the size of Pittsburgh now without any daily newspaper at all.
- 21:04Speaker 1: And we were just talking about daily interactions from maybe
- 21:06Speaker 1: politicians to students or whatever it might be. But you
- 21:09Speaker 1: zoom out just a little bit and now suddenly you
- 21:12Speaker 1: don't have any on the ground, I mean daily on
- 21:15Speaker 1: the ground, residents of Pittsburgh that live there, that cover there,
- 21:20Speaker 1: that that run the beats. You don't have any of
- 21:23Speaker 1: that on the ground, touching of the stories. And man,
- 21:27Speaker 1: that is where misinformation lives and where exactly less information lives.
- 21:30Speaker 11: Oh yeah, again another situation where nature a bores a vacuum,
- 21:34Speaker 11: so it's going to get filled by some thing or
- 21:37Speaker 11: some one. So Pittsburgh Postcussette's not going to be out
- 21:40Speaker 11: there on the ground covering things.
- 21:42Speaker 10: Somebody's going to.
- 21:43Speaker 11: Now it could be someone that falls good journalistic practices
- 21:47Speaker 11: and things of that nature.
- 21:49Speaker 10: I mean some bloggers do.
- 21:50Speaker 11: I used to teacho in journalism across the country, so
- 21:54Speaker 11: I mean there are people out there to do that,
- 21:55Speaker 11: so good work. But then you got some people that again,
- 22:00Speaker 11: we'll fill that vacuum with misinformation and conspiracy theories and
- 22:05Speaker 11: just false information. And so yeah, you need. Some institutions
- 22:11Speaker 11: are not bad things, and the loss of the Pittsburgh
- 22:15Speaker 11: Post is as huge institution that it will take the
- 22:17Speaker 11: city a while to recover from.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Yeah, we're losing our media quicker than we can gain
- 22:22Speaker 1: the media literacy to replace them. And that's there's gonna
- 22:24Speaker 1: be a huge gap with the people that consume media there.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Moving on from that and talking about what's going to
- 22:29Speaker 1: happen here in the upcoming legislative session, I don't know
- 22:32Speaker 1: what do you think that the tops is the tox
- 22:34Speaker 1: braw the top story going in or what's the top
- 22:36Speaker 1: story you think?
- 22:37Speaker 11: Oh?
- 22:37Speaker 10: Man, Well, I think for sure economic development.
- 22:41Speaker 11: At the House Republican Caucus back in December laid out
- 22:44Speaker 11: a pretty extensive agenda for things that they want to
- 22:47Speaker 11: do to try to continue to improve the economy, grow jobs,
- 22:52Speaker 11: create a cut red tape, create a better environment. So
- 22:56Speaker 11: and the last I've heard from some sources that the
- 22:59Speaker 11: Governor is a least supportive broadly of the House's agenda
- 23:02Speaker 11: on that. So there could be some movement and purchase
- 23:05Speaker 11: on that. Governor did unveil plans for another five percent
- 23:10Speaker 11: to ten percent cut in personal income tax rates. That
- 23:14Speaker 11: might be a harder push, mind you, especially in the
- 23:17Speaker 11: Republican caucuses over in the House, in the Senate. They're
- 23:20Speaker 11: never going to say they don't want to cut or
- 23:22Speaker 11: phase out the personal income tax.
- 23:23Speaker 10: They all do.
- 23:24Speaker 11: But I think some want to leave in place to
- 23:27Speaker 11: mechanism to trigger mechanism that's already there to slowly kind
- 23:31Speaker 11: of do that based on the how well our economy
- 23:33Speaker 11: is doing. I think people want to see that still
- 23:36Speaker 11: in place. They may give the governor some form of
- 23:39Speaker 11: tax cut or tax reform, maybe on the corporate net
- 23:43Speaker 11: income tax side of things, so you'll see some movement
- 23:46Speaker 11: for that for sure. I'd say they walk out of
- 23:49Speaker 11: the session with a tax cut or a taxi form package,
- 23:52Speaker 11: just some story. It may not be what the governor
- 23:54Speaker 11: necessarily wants well see. And then of course there's a
- 23:57Speaker 11: big push on child welfare issues. The governor had a
- 23:59Speaker 11: press conference earlier this week about that, pushing a few
- 24:03Speaker 11: things a to try to bring some of our foster
- 24:05Speaker 11: children that are in out of state placement back into
- 24:07Speaker 11: the state ways, to be proactive, to try to help
- 24:11Speaker 11: at risk children before they become another CPS. Theistic things
- 24:17Speaker 11: that ultimately would a help those families, but also save
- 24:20Speaker 11: the states and money because that's very expensive to do,
- 24:23Speaker 11: so those are going to be some of the priorities
- 24:25Speaker 11: going forward.
- 24:26Speaker 1: I talked to an a new incoming representative yesterday who
- 24:32Speaker 1: on the Republican side, and he was very hopeful that
- 24:36Speaker 1: it's going to be all economic development or mostly economic development,
- 24:40Speaker 1: and that the socialist is shoes are kind of left
- 24:42Speaker 1: on the back burner. I fear that, as much as
- 24:46Speaker 1: we hope that that there's going to be something that
- 24:48Speaker 1: comes up that sucks the oxygen out of the room. Yeah,
- 24:51Speaker 1: I don't know what it could be. This time around.
- 24:53Speaker 1: There always seems to be something, But I fear of that.
- 24:55Speaker 10: It's an election year.
- 24:56Speaker 11: It's an election year, and of course now no no
- 25:00Speaker 11: offense to my Democratic friends, but a lot of your
- 25:03Speaker 11: primaries are won in law elections, won and loss in
- 25:06Speaker 11: the primary, a lot of Republicans challenging other Republicans, and
- 25:11Speaker 11: I think it will be inevitable that someone will go
- 25:13Speaker 11: to a red meat conservative social issue to try to
- 25:18Speaker 11: get to the right of their opponent and election. So
- 25:21Speaker 11: I'd say it's bound to happen. But I do think
- 25:26Speaker 11: especially recent polling over the last year, including the West
- 25:29Speaker 11: Virginia poll. I think even people that do kind of
- 25:32Speaker 11: maybe have some support for some of those social issues,
- 25:35Speaker 11: even though there's not a whole lot left to do
- 25:36Speaker 11: in the state of West Virginia, it's a conservative state already.
- 25:41Speaker 11: They want to see more focus on the jobs issue.
- 25:43Speaker 11: I know affordability has become sort of the key buzzword now,
- 25:46Speaker 11: but I mean it's a good catch all for the
- 25:49Speaker 11: issues of inflation and higher prices at the grocery store
- 25:52Speaker 11: and other things. People want to see that brought down
- 25:55Speaker 11: electricity rates and prices. I mean those were still going up.
- 25:59Speaker 11: People want to see that mitigated. So I do think
- 26:03Speaker 11: that the economic issues should win out, probably before some
- 26:06Speaker 11: of the social issues. But we will see something.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Uh, let's if you don't mind, let's take a break,
- 26:10Speaker 1: if you can hang with me for just a couple
- 26:12Speaker 1: of minutes. On the other side of the break, have
- 26:13Speaker 1: a couple more questions for you before we cut you loose.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Steven Allen Adams is with us this morning from Augun Newspapers,

- 29:30Speaker 1: from Autuga Newspapers just for a couple of minutes here
- 29:32Speaker 1: in this segment before we move on to the end
- 29:34Speaker 1: of the show. We were talking a little bit during
- 29:36Speaker 1: the break about data centers, and I think that that's
- 29:39Speaker 1: an kind of an interesting place that we're going to
- 29:41Speaker 1: explore because there is opportunity there. We see these coming
- 29:45Speaker 1: up all over the country, but it seems like as
- 29:46Speaker 1: quickly as developmental opportunities coming up, the pushback when that
- 29:50Speaker 1: opportunity is coming up, and that's going to be something
- 29:52Speaker 1: that we'll deal with eventually here in West Virginia.
- 29:55Speaker 10: Yeah, of course.
- 29:56Speaker 11: You know, we pass a bill during the last session
- 29:57Speaker 11: House spilled twenty fourteen to allow for these data center
- 30:01Speaker 11: districts and micro grid districts to power those data centers.
- 30:05Speaker 11: Now the bill is in effect, but they're still working
- 30:09Speaker 11: on approval for some of the rules within that, so
- 30:12Speaker 11: that's still pending now. Of course, what's made headlines in
- 30:15Speaker 11: West Virginia have been the data center proposal believe in
- 30:18Speaker 11: Mingo and up and Tucker up in Davis and that
- 30:22Speaker 11: sort of thing. Those are getting big pushback, even though
- 30:25Speaker 11: I think the air permits were approved by DP for those.
- 30:29Speaker 11: So a lot of eyeballs on that, and there is
- 30:31Speaker 11: some heartburn among some lawmakers. Even Center president Randy Smith,
- 30:34Speaker 11: I think said in an article not too long ago
- 30:37Speaker 11: that he kind of regretted pushing that through. So I
- 30:41Speaker 11: think some lawmakers will push back against making any tweaks
- 30:44Speaker 11: because it hasn't been implemented, so we don't know what's
- 30:46Speaker 11: broken with it yet, and I do think there'll be
- 30:49Speaker 11: other lawmakers that do want to curtail the sort of
- 30:54Speaker 11: growth of data centers before they become a big thing.
- 30:57Speaker 11: And we really don't have significant ones, if any major
- 31:00Speaker 11: ones in the state now, but there is some heartburn
- 31:03Speaker 11: about it.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll see how that is. I think it's going
- 31:05Speaker 1: to be maybe not in twenty six, maybe in a
- 31:07Speaker 1: year or two down the road, but that's something we're
- 31:09Speaker 1: definitely going to be tackling here before we cut you loose.
- 31:11Speaker 1: I've heard pretty good chance of teachers and state employees
- 31:15Speaker 1: probably getting raises, or at least that's going to be
- 31:17Speaker 1: one of the main portions on the docket. I guess.
- 31:20Speaker 11: Yeah, Well, the governor has said he's going to do
- 31:21Speaker 11: a public polley pay race, so that would include teachers,
- 31:23Speaker 11: state police, anyone paid out of the general revenue budget,
- 31:27Speaker 11: and the executive branch things of that nature. We don't
- 31:30Speaker 11: know what percentage of that is. Traditionally they've done five percent.
- 31:34Speaker 11: There's a three percent race that's actually built into future
- 31:38Speaker 11: budget assumptions, so it could be three percent, it could
- 31:40Speaker 11: be five percent. You got some people like State Treasurer
- 31:44Speaker 11: Larry Pack that want to go further and focus specifically
- 31:47Speaker 11: on teachers and school service personnel, especially with teachers, raise
- 31:50Speaker 11: them up to fifty thousand as a minimum, and then
- 31:55Speaker 11: raise experienced teachers up by two thousand. We'll see, but
- 32:00Speaker 11: I think they got to take a crack at doing
- 32:02Speaker 11: something because, I mean, school systems are having big financial
- 32:05Speaker 11: problems and a lot of that is trying to hold
- 32:07Speaker 11: on to experienced teachers.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Yeah. I have to tell you, as a it's it's
- 32:11Speaker 1: an interesting dilemma out there. I'm a I have a
- 32:13Speaker 1: seven year old child and we do homeschool, and and
- 32:17Speaker 1: I don't have like an overly negative or positive I
- 32:21Speaker 1: think you know, homeschool is homeschooling. Whatever you whatever you
- 32:23Speaker 1: do with it, you're in homeschool exactly.
- 32:26Speaker 11: School parents, I mean, you can't blanket label them, but I.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Will say that I don't feel I necessarily have the
- 32:32Speaker 1: options for public school that that I would like to
- 32:35Speaker 1: have if like, eventually, you know, I'm not a teacher.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Eventually I can't teach, you know, beyond certain levels, or
- 32:40Speaker 1: my wife can't teach me on certain levels. We can
- 32:42Speaker 1: go to the charter route or do something like that
- 32:43Speaker 1: from our house of course, but if we wanted to
- 32:45Speaker 1: go into public schools, I mean, there was some concern
- 32:48Speaker 1: as a parent out there, like are the schools when
- 32:50Speaker 1: we remain open? Is it going to be in the
- 32:51Speaker 1: middle of the consolidation, what's the student to teacher ratio
- 32:54Speaker 1: is going to be?
- 32:55Speaker 11: Like?
- 32:55Speaker 1: What all these things along on both It's exactly true.
- 32:58Speaker 1: You know, all of these things fact into that as
- 33:00Speaker 1: a parent, and they kind of figure that out somehow.
- 33:02Speaker 11: In this state, we need to make major changes to
- 33:05Speaker 11: the school aid formula. We'll see if they try to
- 33:07Speaker 11: do that this session. It's a heavy lift. They almost
- 33:10Speaker 11: really have to do it in their own special session
- 33:12Speaker 11: that focuses on that because it's so complicated. But I mean,
- 33:15Speaker 11: there's so many schools closing consolidating morse, parents are going
- 33:20Speaker 11: into school choice, which is their choice to do, but
- 33:24Speaker 11: schools need to be public. Schools need to be allowed
- 33:26Speaker 11: to compete better with that, and right now their hands
- 33:29Speaker 11: are kind of tied, especially by the type of money
- 33:31Speaker 11: to get from the state. Not the only funding they
- 33:34Speaker 11: get to get, of course, property taxes from counties and
- 33:36Speaker 11: bonds and levies that sort of thing, but school ad
- 33:38Speaker 11: formula is a big parlad and they got to figure
- 33:40Speaker 11: out how to fix that.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Last question for you, you've been doing this for a
- 33:43Speaker 1: long time. As you get ready to cover the legislative
- 33:45Speaker 1: session that starts next week, is there any anything that's
- 33:48Speaker 1: under the surface of bill or something that you've to
- 33:51Speaker 1: You don't have to give us any scoop, but anything
- 33:53Speaker 1: that you fear or not fear, but that you think
- 33:55Speaker 1: that might be a big story that not everybody's talking
- 33:57Speaker 1: about right now.
- 33:59Speaker 10: Nothing yet.
- 34:00Speaker 11: I mean, the problem with a legislative session in an
- 34:03Speaker 11: election year is they could either play really safe or
- 34:08Speaker 11: there could be some real drop dead fights on the
- 34:11Speaker 11: floor and you don't really known till you get into it.
- 34:15Speaker 11: It could go either way. Election years, people do like
- 34:20Speaker 11: to play it safe, so maybe this might be easy peasy,
- 34:24Speaker 11: but I mean, sessions are unpredictable. You got to you
- 34:27Speaker 11: literally have to take them day by day for the
- 34:29Speaker 11: entire sixty day period.
- 34:30Speaker 10: So we'll we'll see. It'll be a roller coaster.
- 34:32Speaker 1: There's some been with some wild things. I have Hoppy
- 34:34Speaker 1: coming on next and I'm looking forward. I want to
- 34:36Speaker 1: talk to him more about a history of us broadcasting
- 34:38Speaker 1: live from over there.
- 34:38Speaker 9: Man.
- 34:39Speaker 1: It's just got some crazy things that's happened over there
- 34:41Speaker 1: over the years.
- 34:42Speaker 10: I no doubt Hoppy has some great stories on that.
- 34:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm sure we'll get there. Uh, Steven, I appreciate
- 34:46Speaker 1: your time coming in man. I think this is the
- 34:47Speaker 1: first time we've ever been on the air again.

- 37:54Speaker 1: take over with Dave and TJ. But speaking of Talklan,
- 37:57Speaker 1: I'd like to bring on to the air now the
- 37:59Speaker 1: form our host of talk Line, mister Hoppy Kerchival is
- 38:02Speaker 1: joining us this morning. Happy, good morning. How you doing
- 38:04Speaker 1: this morning?
- 38:05Speaker 16: Good morning, Coop, I'm well, how are you.
- 38:06Speaker 1: I'm doing very well as well. Thanks for coming on.
- 38:08Speaker 1: I really appreciate that. And in this time of year,
- 38:11Speaker 1: by the way, Happy New Year to.
- 38:12Speaker 16: You and to you sir, thank you.
- 38:14Speaker 1: This time of year, of course, here in Charleston, we're
- 38:17Speaker 1: always getting ready for Metro News to h to relocate
- 38:20Speaker 1: talk Line down here for broadcasting live from the Capitol,
- 38:23Speaker 1: and of course uh TJ and Dave are going to
- 38:26Speaker 1: start doing that next year. I wanted to talk to
- 38:27Speaker 1: you for a couple of minutes about this though, because
- 38:30Speaker 1: of course when Talklin first started decided to go live
- 38:35Speaker 1: to the Capitol, you were part of that decision and
- 38:37Speaker 1: when we started doing that. Could you tell us a
- 38:39Speaker 1: little bit about why we decided to start broadcasting live
- 38:42Speaker 1: from there and then how it worked out over the years,
- 38:44Speaker 1: because I know that we've covered a lot of stories
- 38:46Speaker 1: that broke in real time while we were on the air.
- 38:49Speaker 16: Absolutely, you know, Coop, what happens to the West Virginia legislature,
- 38:53Speaker 16: whether you pay attention to politics or don't or like
- 38:56Speaker 16: it or don't like it, what happens there typically effect
- 39:00Speaker 16: the entire state. So it's important what goes on over
- 39:03Speaker 16: those sixty days, what laws are passed, what lalls are changed,
- 39:07Speaker 16: what bills don't pass that is relevant to the entire state.
- 39:11Speaker 16: That's the first thing The second thing is it is
- 39:15Speaker 16: a unique setting, and you've been up there. It's a
- 39:17Speaker 16: unique setting, and that here are the most powerful individuals
- 39:22Speaker 16: in West Virginia. The lawmakers, the governor, the Board of
- 39:27Speaker 16: Public Works, the department heads. They're all there. They're all there,
- 39:35Speaker 16: and they're all walking around. Then you have access to them.
- 39:39Speaker 16: So it is the one time during the year, over
- 39:43Speaker 16: those sixty days where all these people are typically in
- 39:46Speaker 16: one place and the public and the media have access
- 39:51Speaker 16: to them. And that's another part is the public is
- 39:53Speaker 16: that look, anybody can come in, right, you got to
- 39:57Speaker 16: go through the metal detector, but anybody can come in
- 40:00Speaker 16: be there in the upper rotunda where wall makers come
- 40:04Speaker 16: and go and department heads come and go, and you
- 40:07Speaker 16: can have access to them. You can buttonhole them and
- 40:11Speaker 16: ask them something. And also any number of groups will
- 40:16Speaker 16: be there over the next sixty days and they will
- 40:19Speaker 16: set up booze and to tell you about what they
- 40:22Speaker 16: do and what they're involved in. So it is a
- 40:25Speaker 16: microcosm of everything that happens in West Virginia, all in
- 40:29Speaker 16: one place for sixty days. I think it's very unique.
- 40:31Speaker 1: And it's amazing. As you said, I've been up there
- 40:34Speaker 1: providing some small assistance from time to time or to observe.
- 40:37Speaker 1: And the energy is immense, I mean, and whatever you
- 40:41Speaker 1: think about what you can pick up like sort of
- 40:43Speaker 1: psychosomatically or whatever it might be. When you walk into
- 40:46Speaker 1: that room and all those people are there and the
- 40:48Speaker 1: business of the days being done, and all the different
- 40:50Speaker 1: media and stuff is around, it literally feels like one
- 40:54Speaker 1: of those moments that you can feel the energy that's
- 40:56Speaker 1: in the room and the things that are happening.
- 40:58Speaker 16: Well, you're exactly right. There is an energy to it.
- 41:01Speaker 16: Which it's funny because at the end of the session
- 41:03Speaker 16: there's the energy because it's the end of the session,
- 41:05Speaker 16: what's going to happen, but also that people are worn out,
- 41:07Speaker 16: you know, they're tired of it. But there is an
- 41:10Speaker 16: energy to it. There's an excitement to it, and if
- 41:14Speaker 16: you're interested at all in policy or politics, it's a
- 41:18Speaker 16: fascinating place to be. And I understand that not everybody
- 41:22Speaker 16: can be there, which is one of the reasons, one
- 41:23Speaker 16: of the big reasons the talk line is there because
- 41:26Speaker 16: it can be your representative. It can talk about policy
- 41:30Speaker 16: that's going on, it can talk about the debates and
- 41:32Speaker 16: also just give you a sense of what is happening
- 41:35Speaker 16: at the Capitol. I really think that us being there
- 41:38Speaker 16: along with other reporters from other news organizations, I think
- 41:41Speaker 16: it's invaluable.
- 41:42Speaker 1: And the way that and as being part of this
- 41:46Speaker 1: media company that I am and I've been you know,
- 41:48Speaker 1: I've been here since twenty ten, not nearly as long
- 41:50Speaker 1: as what a lot of people here, But I have
- 41:52Speaker 1: great pride in what we're able to do with this
- 41:55Speaker 1: from the standpoint is that we present the information, whether
- 41:58Speaker 1: it's you at the Capitol before or teaching they've starting,
- 42:01Speaker 1: we present the information, we bring the people on that
- 42:03Speaker 1: people are listening. We're not trying to steer the ship
- 42:06Speaker 1: in this regard in any way. We're just giving access,
- 42:09Speaker 1: just like the listener was sitting there, and we're trying
- 42:11Speaker 1: to sit there in their stead, ask the questions that
- 42:13Speaker 1: a listener might ask, get the people that the listener
- 42:15Speaker 1: might be interested in that they may not hear from
- 42:17Speaker 1: because they can't sit in community meetings, they can't go
- 42:19Speaker 1: to these different things. And it gives access to people
- 42:21Speaker 1: to listen to these important decision makers in our state
- 42:24Speaker 1: that they wouldn't normally have otherwise. I think that that
- 42:27Speaker 1: is a massive, massive service.
- 42:30Speaker 16: Well that's a fair observation. Let's take, for example, if
- 42:34Speaker 16: there's a discussion and Governor Morrissey has said he wants
- 42:37Speaker 16: to lower taxes, So let's say that that proposal is
- 42:41Speaker 16: up for discussion. Well, you can get lawmakers on from
- 42:44Speaker 16: both sides and say what are the pros and cons?
- 42:46Speaker 16: Or let's say it's about changing the vaccine wall. You
- 42:48Speaker 16: can get lawmakers on and policymakers and others and interested
- 42:53Speaker 16: citizens and talk about both sides or all sides of
- 42:56Speaker 16: an issue. So I have found it when I hosted
- 42:59Speaker 16: the show, and I think Dave and TJ would agree,
- 43:02Speaker 16: is that it's educational for an informative for the public,
- 43:05Speaker 16: but also for the host. I mean, I learned a
- 43:08Speaker 16: ton by being there, and there's no substitute from a
- 43:11Speaker 16: media standpoint, there's no substitute to being there and being
- 43:16Speaker 16: next to it. And also, and this is kind of
- 43:19Speaker 16: a guilty pleasure, and those of us in the media,
- 43:22Speaker 16: I think are all a little bit of this. We
- 43:24Speaker 16: love the gossip too, you know. And there's no secrets
- 43:28Speaker 16: in the Capitol, right, I mean, you pigeonhole somebody. The
- 43:31Speaker 16: people used to tease me because I'd pigeon I'd grab
- 43:34Speaker 16: people and say, what are you hearing? What do you know?
- 43:36Speaker 16: What's going on? And it may change from one end
- 43:39Speaker 16: of the Capitol to the other, but it's it's it's
- 43:42Speaker 16: great drama as well, So I think it's a I
- 43:46Speaker 16: think it's just very unique and I'm glad we're going
- 43:49Speaker 16: to be there with Dave and TJ and Brad Macklin
- 43:51Speaker 16: will be there and other media as well who are
- 43:54Speaker 16: representing there. So I think it's all good.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I love telling the stories. Before I cut you loose,
- 43:59Speaker 1: I have to. I have to touch on just briefly
- 44:00Speaker 1: one of the most monumental moments that I can remember
- 44:03Speaker 1: on this and that was I know you've talked about
- 44:05Speaker 1: it many times, but the teacher strike back in twenty eighteen,
- 44:08Speaker 1: as far as of a confluence of the immediacy of
- 44:12Speaker 1: a breaking story and for there being such great representation
- 44:16Speaker 1: for a radio broadcast to do it, because you had
- 44:18Speaker 1: the chanting and the rotunda and the thing going on.
- 44:20Speaker 1: I mean, you could barely hear yourself in it, but
- 44:22Speaker 1: in the moment and the way all that stuff kind
- 44:23Speaker 1: of played out, and how that was such a fast moving,
- 44:26Speaker 1: breaking story that we were on the entire time. That
- 44:29Speaker 1: is just one of those moments where stories and things
- 44:31Speaker 1: converged together where we were in the perfect place at
- 44:34Speaker 1: the perfect time to be able to follow that as
- 44:36Speaker 1: the story was developing.
- 44:38Speaker 16: Yeah, that was an amazing time. There were literally thousands
- 44:41Speaker 16: of teachers and staff that were jammed into the capitol.
- 44:44Speaker 16: You could barely move and the capital is a pretty
- 44:46Speaker 16: big place, and the ambiance, I mean, you could share
- 44:50Speaker 16: it and you could see it, and that was a
- 44:53Speaker 16: true representation of what was going on at that moment,
- 44:57Speaker 16: and that was powerful then I think enabled people across
- 45:00Speaker 16: the state to see and hear and steal what the
- 45:04Speaker 16: dynamic was as policy was being made concerning what the
- 45:08Speaker 16: uh you know, what benefits and pay raises or no
- 45:11Speaker 16: pay raises the teachers were going to get. And that's
- 45:13Speaker 16: the bit, that's the that's the pro of being there,
- 45:16Speaker 16: of being there when all this is unfolding.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Yeah, it's absolutely amazing to watch them, to watch in
- 45:20Speaker 1: real time. And there's going to be something's going to
- 45:22Speaker 1: come up this session. I have no doubt that's going
- 45:24Speaker 1: to be a big story. And that's what I want
- 45:25Speaker 1: to get you out of here on just I know
- 45:28Speaker 1: you still observe you right about these things all the time.
- 45:30Speaker 1: You're still part of this. If is there anything in
- 45:32Speaker 1: this session that you're following that you think is an
- 45:35Speaker 1: interesting throw line that you want to follow to see
- 45:38Speaker 1: how it comes out at the end. Look, what what
- 45:39Speaker 1: is it that you're picking up one that you want
- 45:41Speaker 1: to see how it concludes?
- 45:42Speaker 16: Sure, a couple of things. One is, you know the
- 45:44Speaker 16: Governy's proposed to tax cut. Obviously that will be big.
- 45:47Speaker 16: What happens with vaccines if anything. And also the third category,
- 45:51Speaker 16: which is probably my favorite, is the stuff that comes
- 45:54Speaker 16: out of the blue. There's always something that comes out
- 45:57Speaker 16: of the blue and takes on a life of its
- 46:00Speaker 16: own and before you know what, everybody's talking about it
- 46:04Speaker 16: and nobody saw it coming. And that's always one of
- 46:06Speaker 16: my favorites. So always be on the lookout for that.
- 46:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm looking. You're absolutely right. And then sometimes it
- 46:12Speaker 1: could be silly. Sometimes it could be you know, a
- 46:14Speaker 1: lot more serious than what you had in mind. But
- 46:16Speaker 1: there's always something that you're not expecting that comes out
- 46:18Speaker 1: and we'll be there for it regardless of what it is.
- 46:21Speaker 16: That's great. I'm glad that Metro just continues to make
- 46:24Speaker 16: that commitment. Dave and TJ are going to be there.
- 46:26Speaker 16: I think that's outstanding, so and I appreciate you focusing
- 46:28Speaker 16: on that this morning.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Coop, Yeah, absolutely happy. I appreciate you taking some time and
- 46:31Speaker 1: joining us. I know you're you on hotline a little
- 46:33Speaker 1: or talk line a little later on today too.
- 46:34Speaker 16: I am eleven oh six. There we go, sem I retired.
- 46:37Speaker 16: They bring the old guy back out when they need something.
- 46:39Speaker 1: So yeah, more Hoppy at eleven oh six on talk line. Hoppy.
- 46:41Speaker 1: I appreciate your time again today and we'll talk to
- 46:43Speaker 1: you later on. It's my pleasure. Thanks Coup, Thanks a bunch.
- 46:46Speaker 1: That's a hoppy Curchiable the retired semi retired dean of
- 46:50Speaker 1: broadcasting here in Western Tain. I always love checking in
- 46:52Speaker 1: with Hoppy. No perspective could be matched there as far
- 46:55Speaker 1: as that go. Dave Allen's show on five of d
- 46:56Speaker 1: Live is brought to you in part by Morgan and
- 46:58Speaker 1: Morgan America is the largest injury firm and by the
- 47:01Speaker 1: Charleston Dirty Birds, your hometown baseball team, the Charleston dirty Birds.
- 47:04Speaker 1: It may be wintertime, but we are already thinking about
- 47:07Speaker 1: baseball at Go Mart Park now would be a good
- 47:10Speaker 1: time to secure your season tickets merchandise at more at
- 47:13Speaker 1: dirty birds baseball dot com. A couple things I want
- 47:16Speaker 1: to tell you about before we cut away out of
- 47:18Speaker 1: here today, just about four minutes left in the program,
- 47:21Speaker 1: and I wanted to go over some of the schedule
- 47:22Speaker 1: that we have coming up here on five EDWCHS. First
- 47:25Speaker 1: of all, one thing you need to be aware of
- 47:27Speaker 1: is Carl Lee has a show that's coming out tonight,
- 47:30Speaker 1: Let's Talk That will be on the air at just
- 47:33Speaker 1: after seven o'clock and the podcast will drop today as well.
- 47:37Speaker 1: Let's Talk with Carl Lee you can find out on
- 47:39Speaker 1: any podcast provider and here at Live at seven o'clock tonight.
- 47:42Speaker 1: But I do want to tell you about next week's show.
- 47:44Speaker 1: Carl already has that booked and next week Carl's guest
- 47:47Speaker 1: is going to be Jim McMahon, the former quarterback of
- 47:49Speaker 1: the Chicago Bears, Super Bowl winning quarterback of the nineteen
- 47:52Speaker 1: eighty five Super Bowl Shuffle Bears. Jimy Man is going
- 47:55Speaker 1: to be on the phone, not in studio, but Jim
- 47:57Speaker 1: will be on the phone next week with Carl Lee,
- 48:00Speaker 1: Lisa Odie and Hollis Lewis, who does that program and
- 48:03Speaker 1: you can find a picture of McMahon and a notice
- 48:07Speaker 1: of that show on our Facebook page if you go
- 48:08Speaker 1: to WCHS Network on Facebook. And if you have any
- 48:11Speaker 1: questions for the Super Bowl champ for Jim mannon, you
- 48:14Speaker 1: can leave those there for him and the crew will
- 48:17Speaker 1: get around to it. So that's going to be a
- 48:18Speaker 1: nice guest. Of course, Carl Show has had tons of
- 48:21Speaker 1: guests recently that are pretty cool if you don't listen
- 48:23Speaker 1: to that program. They've had on Sterling Sharp just after
- 48:26Speaker 1: he was inducted into the National Football League Hall of Fame.
- 48:28Speaker 1: They had Christy Martin on a couple times right around
- 48:30Speaker 1: the release of her movie. They had on Dante Carlpepper.
- 48:33Speaker 1: They've had on Kurt Warner, the football player here from
- 48:36Speaker 1: West Virginia who notoriously media shy, and they had him
- 48:40Speaker 1: one to talk about his time in West Virginia with
- 48:43Speaker 1: the Seattle Seahawks. So that's Let's Talk with Carl Lee.
- 48:45Speaker 1: I encourage you to check it out. JIMT Mann is
- 48:47Speaker 1: going to be on next Thursday. There's a new show
- 48:49Speaker 1: that's dropping tonight with the crew as well, and you
- 48:51Speaker 1: can find that on your podcast providers. That Let's Talk
- 48:54Speaker 1: with Carl Lee. It's a great show. Carl puts in
- 48:56Speaker 1: a lot of work for it, so I encourage you
- 48:57Speaker 1: to check that out if you get a chance to
- 49:00Speaker 1: also coming up on the airwaves here at on five
- 49:01Speaker 1: adw CHS. Otherwise, it's a pretty big Things have calmed
- 49:05Speaker 1: down from the bowl season. We don't have as many
- 49:08Speaker 1: of the balls. We were doing several bowls a week
- 49:10Speaker 1: here for a while, but now we're into the playoffs
- 49:13Speaker 1: and we're down to the final four on the playoffs,
- 49:15Speaker 1: and the first game of the Final four is going
- 49:17Speaker 1: to be tonight, and that's going to be right here
- 49:20Speaker 1: on five eight WCHS. You're going to be able to
- 49:23Speaker 1: get that tonight at seven thirty and after sports Line
- 49:27Speaker 1: the kickoff is at eight o'clock, so you'll be able
- 49:30Speaker 1: to pick that up at seven thirty. That's going to
- 49:31Speaker 1: be Miami and Ole Miss tonight from the Fiesta Bowl.
- 49:34Speaker 1: That is a game one of the college football playoff
- 49:37Speaker 1: of the final four. In game two will be tomorrow night.
- 49:40Speaker 1: That's going to be also at seven thirty. Now we
- 49:42Speaker 1: do have high school basketball when WCHS tomorrow night. The
- 49:45Speaker 1: starts at seven. Those games usually only go a little
- 49:47Speaker 1: bit over an hour, hour and a half something like that,
- 49:49Speaker 1: so that will be over about eight thirty. So we
- 49:51Speaker 1: will join the Peach Bowl, which is the other game
- 49:53Speaker 1: of the Final Four for college football. We will join
- 49:57Speaker 1: that in progress about eight thirty or so. That will
- 49:58Speaker 1: only be about a half an hour in to the game,
- 50:00Speaker 1: so probably still in the first quarter. You can catch
- 50:02Speaker 1: the entire game over on our sister station, fourteen ninety
- 50:05Speaker 1: WSWW on one o six to seven. Charleston Sports Radio
- 50:08Speaker 1: will have the entire thing, but you will be able
- 50:10Speaker 1: to catch most of that over here on five ADWCHS
- 50:12Speaker 1: tomorrow night. And then of course, the National Championship is
- 50:15Speaker 1: a week from Monday. That is a week from this
- 50:18Speaker 1: coming Monday is when the National Championship will be and
- 50:20Speaker 1: we'll have that game on five ADWCCHS as well other
- 50:25Speaker 1: games this weekend. As far as high school basketball goes,
- 50:28Speaker 1: I think I mentioned Hoover in Winfield that is going
- 50:30Speaker 1: to be at seven o'clock tomorrow night on five ADWCCHS
- 50:34Speaker 1: and our sister station, which is a ninety six to
- 50:36Speaker 1: one KWS Superstar Country. They are the home for Hoover
- 50:39Speaker 1: Sports and you will be able to find information or
- 50:42Speaker 1: you will be able to find the game over there
- 50:44Speaker 1: as well on Friday and then this weekend. Kind of
- 50:47Speaker 1: a light sports schedule otherwise on WCCHS as far as
- 50:50Speaker 1: national sports go. We do have a college basketball game
- 50:53Speaker 1: Tennessee at Georgia that's going to be at noon on
- 50:56Speaker 1: Saturday right here on five AWCCHS and our sister station
- 50:59Speaker 1: of course, ninety or one of seven three the Beat.
- 51:02Speaker 1: They are the home for West Virginia State Sports. They're
- 51:05Speaker 1: in basketball season now and there'll be a doubleheader on
- 51:08Speaker 1: Saturday with the men's and women's team West Virginia State
- 51:11Speaker 1: University versus Point Park. That's going to be starting at
- 51:14Speaker 1: two o'clock on Saturday, and those games will be back
- 51:16Speaker 1: to back with a doubleheader for women's and men's basketball
- 51:20Speaker 1: from West Virginia State University. So that's what we have
- 51:23Speaker 1: coming up as far as sports goes. You can catch
- 51:25Speaker 1: the schedule at any time Wcchsnetwork, dot Com, Slash Sports.
- 51:28Speaker 1: We have a ton of high school basketball games that's
- 51:31Speaker 1: going to be on the horizon. We're really getting cranked
- 51:33Speaker 1: up as far as high school basketball goes now. Like
- 51:35Speaker 1: I said, we have a Hoover game coming up this week,
- 51:37Speaker 1: but we have several games coming up next week, and
- 51:40Speaker 1: then every week for the remainder of the regular season
- 51:43Speaker 1: for West Virginia High School basketball here in the valley,
- 51:45Speaker 1: we'll have two or three games every single week, at
- 51:47Speaker 1: least sometimes more. So you want to check the schedule
- 51:49Speaker 1: at WCHS network dot com slash Sports. Wchsnetwork dot com.
- 51:54Speaker 1: Slash sports is where you can find all that. Thanks
- 51:56Speaker 1: for tuning in today. Dave Allen will be back tomorrow,
- 51:59Speaker 1: and I'll back this afternoon at three h six with
- 52:01Speaker 1: Dave weekly on Hotline. Encourage you to check in today.
- 52:05Speaker 1: Jermaine Luciar is going to be on the program today.
- 52:07Speaker 1: He lives out in California, has all the access to
- 52:09Speaker 1: the big Hollywood movies, and he'll have a bunch of
- 52:12Speaker 1: information on what's going on with the movies and TV releases.
- 52:15Speaker 1: Plus we'll have plenty more about West Virginia basketball, all
- 52:17Speaker 1: of the college football playoff action, and more today on
- 52:20Speaker 1: Metro News Hotline. Dave and TJ are coming up next
- 52:23Speaker 1: on talk Line, and then Midday with Amanda Baron and
- 52:27Speaker 1: Daniel Woods will be this afternoon starting at noon. Thanks
- 52:30Speaker 1: so much once again for tuning in. I'm Dell Cooper.
