- 1:31All right, guys, without any further ado, let's
- 1:33kick this show off.
- 1:36This is Inspiration for Your Life, and the
- 1:38master topic for this week of Series 5,
- 1:42Show 19.
- 1:42By the way, this is episode three, but
- 1:44the master topic for the entire week is
- 1:45how people rebuild direction when everything gets disrupted.
- 1:51That's a funny thing because you don't think
- 1:54things are going to get disrupted.
- 1:55By the way, I'm John Seymour, serial entrepreneur,
- 1:58engineer, marketing specialist, video producer, podcast host, coach,
- 2:02keynote speaker, graduate student, lifelong learner, and yes,
- 2:05now grateful to be an author.
- 2:10Today, I'm talking about what happens when everything
- 2:12stops working, when systems break down, when routines
- 2:16collapse, when direction just disappears out of nowhere.
- 2:19This is where most people stop and say,
- 2:22okay, I've had enough, but this is also
- 2:24where the rebuilding comes, where success starts to
- 2:26creep in.
- 2:27Yes, so you have to realize that.
- 2:29Again, today is Monday, guys, and when discipline
- 2:32becomes the foundation, that's key.
- 2:35Number one, everyone, discipline replaces chaos when everything
- 2:40feels scattered.
- 2:42You ever had those moments when you're doing
- 2:43something like everything's just kind of like a
- 2:45mess, so scattered, and the discipline becomes the
- 2:48first anchor that brings the control back to
- 2:51you and your life, and I think that's
- 2:52a very, very important thing to note.
- 2:55Number two, guys, structure becomes essential.
- 2:58Without structure, energy is wasted, but with structure,
- 3:02every action starts to align.
- 3:05Now, not overnight, guys, but it does align,
- 3:08and so when it aligns, it's like things
- 3:11really change for us, and I think that's
- 3:13an important piece that a lot of people,
- 3:15they just don't get that in the beginning.
- 3:18Number three, guys, routine gets rebuilt.
- 3:21New routines create predictability, and predictability, guys, creates
- 3:27stability.
- 3:28Yes, when we can depend on something, someone,
- 3:32even ourselves, we have stability, right?
- 3:35Number four, consistency.
- 3:37Consistency returns, doing the same actions repeatedly, building
- 3:43trust in your own process again, but again,
- 3:47it has to build that trust over and
- 3:48over again.
- 3:49Number five, guys, focus strengthens output.
- 3:52When distractions are removed, results begin to improve
- 3:56naturally.
- 3:58Effort becomes intentional, you stop reacting, and you
- 4:02start choosing where your energy goes.
- 4:05I think when we can become intentional about
- 4:07our actions, about what we're doing, our life
- 4:10starts to change, guys, in a very, very
- 4:13magical way, all right?
- 4:15Number seven, habits are redesigned.
- 4:18Old habits that failed are replaced with ones
- 4:21that support progress.
- 4:24Number eight, guys, action becomes planned.
- 4:27Instead of random effort, every move starts to
- 4:30have a purpose, and the purpose or the
- 4:34intentionality actually is based upon our core values.
- 4:38I was talking to somebody about the other
- 4:39day, and I'm like, that's not a word.
- 4:41I'm like, yes, intentionality is a word.
- 4:43You don't hear it a lot.
- 4:45Intentionality is basically when you are acting and
- 4:48being intentional and doing things in that manner.
- 4:52Number nine, guys, energy becomes controlled.
- 4:56When that happens, you no longer burn out
- 4:58because your effort is directed.
- 5:00It's not scattered everywhere, and I think a
- 5:04lot of people out there don't mean to
- 5:06scatter their energy, but for whatever reason, they
- 5:07do, and then they're like so tired, they're
- 5:10so burned out, and they're like, I don't
- 5:11know what I'm supposed to do, right?
- 5:13I don't know what I'm supposed to do.
- 5:15That's important, guys.
- 5:16So number 10, time becomes structured.
- 5:20Time stops slipping away when you assign a
- 5:23clear purpose, and so I want to say
- 5:25more than just that.
- 5:26I want to say when you become intentional,
- 5:28when you are in the moment, your time
- 5:31starts to matter.
- 5:33The moments matter.
- 5:35I find that when you are careless with
- 5:38time, it kind of just flips away from
- 5:41you, and I think that's something that a
- 5:43lot of people don't understand why it flips
- 5:46away, but I want to tell you that
- 5:48it does flip away when you're not intentional,
- 5:52all right?
- 5:52And you might say to me, John, that's
- 5:54nonsense.
- 5:55Well, if you ever had a day, and
- 5:57you're like, oh my gosh, I started the
- 5:58morning, and it's like the night's here, right?
- 6:00Like, did you just waste the whole day?
- 6:03Were you intentional about every moment?
- 6:04I think that's an important thing to understand.
- 6:06Number 11, guys, systems start forming, and small,
- 6:12repeatable actions begin turning into reliable systems.
- 6:17Now, again, this does not happen overnight.
- 6:19I want to be very, very clear about
- 6:21that whole concept.
- 6:22It does not happen overnight, and that's something
- 6:26we need to be very, very aware of.
- 6:30Number 12, guys, behavior becomes aligned.
- 6:36Your actions start matching your goals instead of
- 6:39working against them, and I think that's a
- 6:43very important thing, guys.
- 6:45So number 13, repetition builds stability.
- 6:49Doing simple, I'm saying simple things, guys, simple
- 6:54things over and over creates a strong foundation.
- 6:57You know, probably one of the very first
- 7:00things you've probably ever learned many, many years
- 7:02ago was learning how to tie your shoelace,
- 7:05and learning how to tie your shoelace is
- 7:08not hard, but when it's the first thing
- 7:11you're trying, you're like, oh my gosh, I
- 7:12don't know what I'm supposed to do, right?
- 7:14And this is a very, very big problem
- 7:17because, you know, when you're younger, and you're
- 7:19trying to learn how to tie your shoelace,
- 7:20it's hard, right?
- 7:22There's, you know, the loop and loop, and
- 7:24going around the mountain, and back, and all
- 7:26these fun things to make it easy, but
- 7:28tying your shoe is, like, the hardest thing.
- 7:30I think tying your shoe and learning how
- 7:32to tie a tie.
- 7:34I remember being in college, and I remember
- 7:38being, I believe it was a sophomore or
- 7:41junior, and I still didn't know how to
- 7:43tie my tie, to be honest with you.
- 7:45And a good friend of mine, like, you
- 7:48know, John, I said, I need help tying
- 7:50my tie.
- 7:51He's like, oh, come here.
- 7:53I was like, I want you to teach
- 7:54me how to tie a tie.
- 7:56And he did.
- 7:57And so when he was tying it on
- 8:00me, it was easy to watch.
- 8:03My dad had showed me a few times,
- 8:04but again, he just expected to pick it
- 8:06up one, two, three, and if he didn't
- 8:07get it, well, too bad.
- 8:08So a good friend of mine taught me
- 8:10that.
- 8:10So doing simple things over and over creates
- 8:12that strong foundation.
- 8:14It creates a sense of stability for us
- 8:16and for people around us.
- 8:18And people want to be with people that
- 8:21are part of that whole process, right?
- 8:26They want to be part of that process.
- 8:29And if they can be part of that
- 8:30process, then I think a lot of people
- 8:32will be like, oh my gosh, that is
- 8:35so amazing.
- 8:35That is so great.
- 8:37But I think people just don't really get
- 8:40it because they're so busy about trying to
- 8:43change something, trying to rework something that's already
- 8:47been built, and then they get frustrated, right?
- 8:53So like I was learning how to tie
- 8:54the tie.
- 8:56And for the longest time period, I remember
- 8:58being in eighth grade.
- 9:00I remember in my school, Arlington Valley, up
- 9:04until about, I think it was usually the
- 9:07fifth grade, people were wearing clip-on ties.
- 9:11You really couldn't tell the difference that well
- 9:13unless you were up close to them.
- 9:14But I would always get teased that because
- 9:17I was still wearing a clip-on tie.
- 9:19I was like, well, it's easy.
- 9:20I just put it around, I just clip
- 9:21it, and I'm done.
- 9:22I don't have to go through making the
- 9:23tie.
- 9:24And so all through grammar school, I wore
- 9:26a clip-on tie.
- 9:28And again, it was just a matter of
- 9:30you just put the tie here, you come
- 9:31around the back, and you just clip it,
- 9:33and you're done, right?
- 9:34Now I know how to tie a tie,
- 9:36but back then, that seemed like a very
- 9:38impossible thing for me.
- 9:40So I think these things put more weight
- 9:43on us.
- 9:43And then because they put more weight, I
- 9:44was like, oh my gosh, if I don't
- 9:46do this thing, what am I going to
- 9:47do?
- 9:47What's going to happen to me if I
- 9:48don't do this?
- 9:48Nothing, guys.
- 9:50Absolutely, absolutely nothing.
- 9:52It's just you're putting this pressure on yourself
- 9:55that you have to be somewhere, that you
- 9:57have to do something in a certain way.
- 10:00I think that's something that a lot of
- 10:01people, well, they don't understand it, okay?
- 10:09And so thinking about that can hopefully get
- 10:12you on a new path.
- 10:14Number 14, guys, small actions matter.
- 10:17It's not the big moves that rebuild the
- 10:19direction of your life.
- 10:20It is the consistent small ones that keep
- 10:23the fire or start the fire, all right?
- 10:27Number 15, guys, distraction decreases.
- 10:31Clarity removes noise, and it allows you to
- 10:33stay focused longer, not shorter, but longer.
- 10:38And I think when we can do something
- 10:40that's pretty amazing, like tying a tie or,
- 10:43you know, tying your shoelace, which doesn't seem
- 10:47like a big deal, it actually gives us
- 10:52a sense of accomplishment.
- 10:53I think a lot of people in life
- 10:55want to feel a sense of accomplishment.
- 10:56And when they do feel a sense of
- 10:58accomplishment, they know what's going on.
- 11:03And that's a very important thing for a
- 11:06lot of people to embrace, right?
- 11:09To embrace, you know, maybe for you, maybe
- 11:12you tied your tie fine.
- 11:14But to me, that was like an amazing
- 11:16accomplishment.
- 11:18Maybe an accomplishment for you might be, it
- 11:21could be lifting weights.
- 11:23It could be losing weight.
- 11:24It could be so many different things.
- 11:27It could be working on your education.
- 11:30It could be being kinder to people around
- 11:32you, even strangers, right?
- 11:35So when we learn how to be in
- 11:38a moment or the moment, we become intentional,
- 11:42and we basically show forth intentionality.
- 11:45A word that you probably haven't heard a
- 11:48lot, because how many times do you hear
- 11:50somebody being intentional?
- 11:51Probably don't hear that, right?
- 11:54Intentional is somebody who does something because of
- 11:57their core values, because they want to do
- 11:58it, not because they just fell into it.
- 12:01Number 16, guys, execution becomes priority.
- 12:05Thinking is replaced by doing, and progress starts
- 12:10to begin.
- 12:11I think when progress can start to begin,
- 12:14our life can basically get a change, okay?
- 12:19Our life can get a change.
- 12:21It can get an upgrade if you want,
- 12:23an upgrade that might take us to a
- 12:25completely new level, right?
- 12:28But again, it's not going to happen overnight,
- 12:31folks.
- 12:31And I think sometimes we beat ourselves up.
- 12:33It's like, oh my gosh, when is it
- 12:34going to happen?
- 12:34When is it going to happen?
- 12:36When we don't expect it to happen, and
- 12:38we go about our day, and we're intentional,
- 12:40and then it happens.
- 12:42You're like, oh my gosh, it happened, right?
- 12:44Clarity improves.
- 12:45Number 17, output.
- 12:48The clearer your direction, the better your results
- 12:51will be.
- 12:52And I think a lot of people, they
- 12:55rush through things because they want to get
- 12:56through it.
- 12:57I mean, let's talk about school for more,
- 12:59right?
- 13:00Maybe there was homework you did.
- 13:01I remember we had these, they weren't mad
- 13:05lists, but they were like, they're kind of
- 13:06like these big books.
- 13:07And they were like these mazes.
- 13:09In one of the classes, we had to
- 13:10do that.
- 13:10We had another class called phonics.
- 13:12And it was this boring book.
- 13:15You open it up, and you had to
- 13:17like say the different sounds.
- 13:19And then you had to write them out.
- 13:22And it was just, it was boring, right?
- 13:26When you make something fun, people want to
- 13:29learn, including yourself, right?
- 13:31Number 18, guys.
- 13:33Number 18, momentum stabilizes.
- 13:37Very similar to training wheels on a bike.
- 13:39The training wheels stabilize you until you're ready
- 13:41to be your own stabilization.
- 13:43You stop starting and stopping, and you begin
- 13:46moving steadily forward toward your goal.
- 13:50But the reason that you don't move toward
- 13:52a goal, I'll tell you why.
- 13:53You're scared.
- 13:55You lack clarity or direction.
- 13:58And when that hits, it's like, oh my
- 14:00gosh, I'm just going to throw the towel,
- 14:01right?
- 14:02How many times you've been in school, and
- 14:04maybe your professor or teacher's going on something
- 14:05like, I'm so lost.
- 14:08And when nobody will explain it to you,
- 14:09you're like, I'll just forget it, right?
- 14:12You try to learn on your own, but
- 14:13maybe you can't.
- 14:14So you start to make the situation that's
- 14:18very easy into a molehill because of an
- 14:22attitude you have.
- 14:24Number 19, guys.
- 14:26Resistance reduces.
- 14:28When structure is in place, when it's in
- 14:31place, hesitation will fade.
- 14:34But a lot of people need to be
- 14:36convinced of what is and what isn't.
- 14:39So you have that situation where a lot
- 14:42of people just don't get that, okay?
- 14:46And I think that's a very important thing
- 14:48for us to know, all right?
- 14:50Very important for us to know because of
- 14:53that whole reason, right?
- 14:56And that whole reason is that you have
- 14:58ability, right?
- 14:59And I want to tell you guys that
- 15:03the reason you have this ability is because
- 15:06of who you are, all right?
- 15:10And I will tell you that sometimes you
- 15:17just don't want to go a certain way.
- 15:20Not because you can't, but because of feeling
- 15:24you get, okay?
- 15:28And so that's something that I think trips
- 15:30a lot of people up.
- 15:31They don't realize where they're going or what
- 15:35they're actually doing.
- 15:37And so that's very, very important.
- 15:40And so when you think about this from
- 15:42a perspective, okay?
- 15:45I think your life can fully change.
- 15:50Your life can fully change because of that
- 15:54whole question, all right?
- 16:00And when you think about it, you're like,
- 16:03oh my gosh, how do I do this,
- 16:06right?
- 16:07And the question is not how you do
- 16:09it, but what do you do, right?
- 16:11What do you do?
- 16:13Is it something that you can do, let's
- 16:16say, right away?
- 16:18Or is it something that is going to
- 16:20take a longer period of time, right?
- 16:24And I think that's hard for a lot
- 16:26of people to really understand because they want
- 16:30everything to be now, right?
- 16:33They want everything to be now.
- 16:35And so they just feel that if they
- 16:38can't do something, then they just gotta just
- 16:39forget about it.
- 16:41And that's wrong.
- 16:42Number 20, control increases you.
- 16:45And you begin to feel in charge, active,
- 16:48and not reactive.
- 16:49We said before over many shows that being
- 16:52proactive is better than being reactive, whether we're
- 16:55talking about preparing for a fire or a
- 16:57disaster or even your own life.
- 16:59If you are proactive, you're more likely to
- 17:03succeed.
- 17:05And that's something that I think a lot
- 17:07of people want to know, but for whatever
- 17:09reason, they don't, okay?
- 17:13They don't.
- 17:15And that don't is something I believe that
- 17:17a lot of people, like want to know,
- 17:20but they just can't.
- 17:24They can't.
- 17:26And that can't is something that I believe
- 17:29a lot of people just don't understand.
- 17:32It's not because they really can't.
- 17:36It's because they become different.
- 17:41And that difference, I think, makes something interesting
- 17:46in their life.
- 17:47See, they put this thought in their head
- 17:49that they can't do it, but really they
- 17:50can.
- 17:51Number 21, guys, identity starts shifting.
- 17:55And you stop seeing yourself as lost and
- 17:58start seeing yourself as rebuilding, as a new
- 18:00person, as somebody that has infinite potential.
- 18:06But when you start, it's like, how do
- 18:09I ever get up that mountain?
- 18:10What am I supposed to do?
- 18:11Number 22, guys, discipline builds confidence.
- 18:15Each complete action proves you can follow through,
- 18:19right?
- 18:20But you got to believe that you can
- 18:21follow through.
- 18:21I think that's probably one of the most
- 18:23important things I can tell you.
- 18:24You've got to believe you can follow through.
- 18:26If you believe you can follow through, then,
- 18:29then, guys, you can actually make a difference
- 18:33in your life.
- 18:35You can make a difference in your life
- 18:37if you actually believe.
- 18:40But belief is not something that happens overnight,
- 18:44guys.
- 18:46No, it's not something that happens every night.
- 18:48It takes time.
- 18:54And I think sometimes people, they put themselves
- 18:59into a corner, into a closet, and they
- 19:02can't seem to get out.
- 19:03And I think that's a very, I think
- 19:05that's a very, very important thing.
- 19:11So that's something for us to all know.
- 19:18And I think a lot of people need
- 19:19to understand that, all right?
- 19:26And so when people realize these things, they
- 19:29change their beliefs of who they are, of
- 19:34what they are.
- 19:35But they sometimes get so stuck that they
- 19:39can't move forward, right?
- 19:41Number 23, stability strengthens, okay?
- 19:46It strengthens.
- 19:50Consistency removes uncertainty and builds trust in your
- 19:54process.
- 19:55So the more consistent you are, the more
- 20:00the process just sort of changes.
- 20:14And I think that's something important to know,
- 20:17right?
- 20:20Very important to know.
- 20:24And I think if you know that, then
- 20:27your life will shift.
- 20:30Not a dime, but it will, let's say,
- 20:35evolve into a new direction.
- 20:39Number 24, growth becomes intentional.
- 20:44You stop drifting and you start directing your
- 20:46path.
- 20:48Not anybody else's path, your own path.
- 20:56Let me ask you a question, everyone.
- 20:58When is the last time that your path
- 21:00got out of alignment because you didn't believe
- 21:07in yourself?
- 21:12And if you don't believe in yourself, how
- 21:14can you ever get somewhere?
- 21:21I think that's a very important thing to
- 21:25understand.
- 21:28And I think a lot of people don't
- 21:30know that.
- 21:31They don't know the why, they don't know
- 21:34the how.
- 21:35All they know right now is that they're
- 21:38somewhere.
- 21:39And that for some reason, they just don't
- 21:43know where to go or they don't even
- 21:44know what to do.
- 21:46I think that's a hard thing for a
- 21:48lot of people to be able to rebuild.
- 21:51They don't know how to rebuild.
- 21:53Some people don't know when to rebuild.
- 21:54And you can rebuild anytime you want, but
- 21:58there is a down to that.
- 22:02And that is the fact that it's not
- 22:05gonna be easy for you, right?
- 22:07There's gonna be some minor setbacks when that
- 22:10happens.
- 22:12Number 25, guys, focus becomes lifestyle.
- 22:16Discipline is no longer forced anymore.
- 22:18It becomes part of who you are.
- 22:22Structure holds progress.
- 22:24Even when motivation drops, structure keeps you moving.
- 22:29It does.
- 22:31Number 27, guys, results become consistent, okay?
- 22:36The output improves because effort is sustained.
- 22:40When you practice and you become a good
- 22:42ball player, right?
- 22:44You get even better over time.
- 22:46But this does not happen in five minutes.
- 22:51It takes time, guys.
- 22:53It actually takes time.
- 22:56And when it takes time, you can understand
- 22:59where things are going, why things are going
- 23:02a certain way, okay?
- 23:04You can understand that.
- 23:06And that may be something that maybe keeps
- 23:09you, I don't know, in a certain way.
- 23:14And that way says, you know, I don't
- 23:17know if I can grow.
- 23:18I don't know if I can change.
- 23:20That you're doubting yourself.
- 23:23Number 28, guys, system support success.
- 23:26You're no longer relying on willpower, but on
- 23:30systems.
- 23:31And we've learned before that when we build
- 23:34good systems, whether that's with technology, whether that's
- 23:38with our process, and we follow those systems,
- 23:42we have two things.
- 23:42We have structure and we have a commitment.
- 23:45Structure and we have a commitment.
- 23:46When we have structure and we have a
- 23:47commitment, guess what happens?
- 23:48We have success.
- 23:52We have reliability.
- 23:55We build trust.
- 23:58Number 29, guys, discipline becomes identity.
- 24:02You are no longer trying to be disciplined.
- 24:04You are disciplined.
- 24:06I think a lot of people, they get
- 24:11into a circle with that.
- 24:14They keep getting the circle with the fact
- 24:16that they are disciplined.
- 24:19They don't have to wait for somebody else
- 24:20to discipline them.
- 24:21Number 30, guys, rebuilding stabilizes.
- 24:25And what once felt broken is now structured,
- 24:29controlled, and moving forward.
- 24:35And, you know, sometimes it's hard to tell
- 24:37whether you're moving forward or not.
- 24:39For example, I can give you, I remember
- 24:41being on a camping trip.
- 24:42I'm an Eagle Scout.
- 24:43And I remember being, I think it was
- 24:45a Wee Willow or Life, which was just
- 24:48before Eagle.
- 24:49And I remember walking around this tree.
- 24:51And I remember that we kept walking around
- 24:53the same tree.
- 24:53So I said to our, we called our
- 24:56patrol leader.
- 24:57We had two patrol leaders, one for each
- 24:58patrol.
- 24:59And I said to the patrol, I said,
- 25:00Brian, he said, yes.
- 25:02I said, Brian, we've been walking around here
- 25:04for over an hour.
- 25:07He's like, you know, quit yapping, be quiet.
- 25:10And, you know, suck it up and, you
- 25:12know, just deal with it.
- 25:14We're going to keep walking till we get
- 25:15there.
- 25:16And I was like, Brian, I'm not against
- 25:20walking or hiking for a long time.
- 25:22However, we've been going around this tree for
- 25:26at least 10 times.
- 25:30And so I said something else.
- 25:33I said, you guys, he's like, yeah, I
- 25:34think you're right.
- 25:35I said, I got a solution, Brian.
- 25:37So what's that?
- 25:38I'm going to tie my string around this
- 25:44tree.
- 25:44And if we come back again and we
- 25:47hit the tree, we know we're going in
- 25:48a circle.
- 25:49You can do that, but we're not doing
- 25:50it.
- 25:50We're not, we're not trying.
- 25:51So we come back around and I was
- 25:53like, Brian, see the rope?
- 25:56He's like, what's that?
- 25:58That's a rope I tied around here about
- 26:0115 minutes ago.
- 26:02We keep walking around the same tree.
- 26:05Oh, so we took the rope off the
- 26:07tree.
- 26:08And instead of walking that way, we walked
- 26:11a different way.
- 26:12But it was like, I had to prove
- 26:14it to them.
- 26:15Ladies and gentlemen, when everything gets disrupted, most
- 26:18people look for motivation, but the motivation itself
- 26:21fades.
- 26:23What actually rebuilds the direction is the discipline
- 26:26that we hold within us.
- 26:27It is not exciting.
- 26:28It is not dramatic.
- 26:30But guess what, guys?
- 26:30It works every time.
- 26:33And once discipline becomes your foundation, guess what?
- 26:36Everything else, that's right, guys.
- 26:39Everything else begins to slowly rebuild on top
- 26:44of it, not quickly.
- 26:48And I think that's something that we might
- 26:52take a long time to not just know,
- 26:57but acknowledge.
- 26:59Because we might know deep inside that we've
- 27:01been doing that, but do we acknowledge it?
- 27:05Because once we acknowledge it, we can make
- 27:07a change.
- 27:08I think that's an important piece, guys.
- 27:12Discipline is key.
- 27:15And when we understand discipline, when discipline becomes
- 27:18the foundation, success becomes inevitable, right?
- 27:25The discipline helps build the motivation, and then
- 27:31we get the results.
- 27:33But sometimes motivation is weak, so discipline has
- 27:36to strengthen the motivation.
- 27:38Ladies and gentlemen, if this resonated with you
- 27:40in any small or big way, please share
- 27:43this with someone who needs to rebuild their
- 27:46direction in their life.
- 27:47When you do it, though, be kind.
- 27:49Don't be like, hey, you got to rebuild
- 27:51your life.
- 27:51And remember, guys, clarity is not found, it
- 27:54is built.
- 27:55Just like leers are not born, they're made.
- 27:59Have yourself a great one, everyone.
- 28:00I'll catch you real soon.
