- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:21Let's just get straight into the stories for today.
- 0:24But before I do, Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 0:27We are trying to get to 1000 Spotify star ratings and we are
- 0:31trying to get to 10,000 YouTube subscribers and we are close to
- 0:34that. So please subscribe.
- 0:36All right, the first Ray that I have for you guys, this was
- 0:39requested by you guys. I've done my best to put
- 0:42together all the information, but please let us know in the
- 0:45comments if there's anything that I've missed or any contacts
- 0:48that I've left out. So I'm going to recap for you
- 0:50guys the whole Drew and Enya situation.
- 0:53So host of the Emergency Intercom podcast, Drew and Enya
- 0:56have been facing several weeks of criticism from their
- 0:59listeners. I am not a listener of their
- 1:01podcast, but we did cover them last year when they left TMG
- 1:05Studios, which was Cody KO's podcast network, amid the
- 1:09allegations that Cody slept with Tan Emoja while she was a minor
- 1:12and he was not. So as far as I can tell,
- 1:14criticism from their audience first started after an episode
- 1:18of the podcast on March 28th where they said that Greta
- 1:21Thornburg, quote, fell off because she hasn't been popping
- 1:24up online as much anymore. Oh yeah, Greta Thornburg fell
- 1:27off. Bitches in the gutter.
- 1:30Gretta, stop calling her bitch. OK, so later in the episode Drew
- 1:34kept going saying Malala never fell off like Gretta did.
- 1:38Listeners were understandably very upset.
- 1:41Gretta has been active online. She's continually posting about
- 1:45Palestine and climate change. And I think regardless if it was
- 1:48a joke or not, going after these young female activists who are
- 1:51genuinely trying to make change, even if this was supposed to be
- 1:56a joke, like it just didn't land for people.
- 1:58Like we are not in the mood for jokes about this.
- 2:01So the emergency intercom podcast Instagram page addressed
- 2:05the comments and feedback on April 4th.
- 2:07They said, quote, we've seen all the feedback from last week's
- 2:10episode. And we want to say sincerely,
- 2:11we're sorry. We're incredibly lucky to have
- 2:13this job, this community and this platform.
- 2:15The fact that we get to do what we love because of your support
- 2:18is never lost on us. This past week has made it
- 2:21clearer than ever how much responsibility comes with that
- 2:23privilege. We wrote countless most versions
- 2:25of this trying to get it right, but the honest truth is simple.
- 2:27What we said about Greta and Malala last week was reckless
- 2:30and it goes directly against why we started this podcast in the
- 2:331st place. If we had been more informed
- 2:35about the reality of the work done by Greta for Palestine and
- 2:38human rights across the globe, we wouldn't have made these
- 2:41jokes. They were out of touch and
- 2:43careless. Especially in a moment that
- 2:44calls for sensitivity and awareness.
- 2:46And then they continue saying they will educate themselves and
- 2:50you know, say we love you and are so grateful for making the
- 2:53show possible. So just by addressing it, this
- 2:55situation has kicked off a larger discussion within their
- 2:58fandom, specifically about Drew and Enya's content since finding
- 3:02more fame and money and success. One of their fans tweeted,
- 3:05quote, they're going to call me too woke, but Emergency Intercom
- 3:08is a documentary about people losing their common sense and
- 3:11empathy as they acquire more wealth.
- 3:14So people are saying they're losing relatability, but they
- 3:16also seem to not understand how to connect with their audience
- 3:18anymore because they really built their careers off of
- 3:21themselves as people, like sharing their personal stories
- 3:24and, you know, things like that. And fans are basically saying
- 3:28that the duo have become lazy with their content because their
- 3:33lives have become increasingly unrelatable and they don't want
- 3:37to share such personal stuff anymore.
- 3:39As they become more famous. And probably as the people in
- 3:41their lives become more famous, you know, like their circle has
- 3:44probably changed and they're hanging out with like famous
- 3:47influencers and celebrities and stuff.
- 3:48So they're not going to share as much about their personal lives
- 3:51anymore. But instead of finding a way to
- 3:54pivot their content to suit this kind of new era of their career
- 3:58and their lives, their fans are saying they kind of just tell so
- 4:02many stories with so much redacted information that it
- 4:06loses all meaning and it's boring.
- 4:09Well the main issues are their lack of effort in their job that
- 4:12they get paid heavily for pretty much by us.
- 4:15They need to either stop speaking on anything that could
- 4:17be deemed political as a whole and acknowledge their ignorance
- 4:21or if it's something they truly care about, educate themselves
- 4:23about topics before speaking on them.
- 4:25I will say I don't think people are saying they're bad just
- 4:27because they're rich. We're saying the money has
- 4:29changed their attitudes towards their jobs and made them a lot
- 4:32more out of touch than who we thought they were.
- 4:34So I'm going to say that's like the Cliff notes version of the
- 4:37Drew and Enya situation. But if you search it on TikTok,
- 4:40you'll see a lot of fans like talking about this and sharing
- 4:43their opinions. And it kind of reminds me it's,
- 4:46it's different, but it reminds me of what happened with Emma
- 4:49Chamberlain a couple years ago where that one video popped off
- 4:52where a girl was like, Emma needs to go to college.
- 4:54And then it started this massive discussion within the fandom
- 4:58about kind of how Emma's content has changed and how people do
- 5:03relate to her or they don't relate to her anymore.
- 5:05And it's just like a broader discussion.
- 5:07So it is interesting how this controversy has started almost a
- 5:11bit of like a movement within the fandom itself.
- 5:13OK, the next story that I have for you guys.
- 5:15A couple days ago, Netflix released a new documentary
- 5:17called Bad Influence, The Dark Side of Kid Fluence saying,
- 5:21which explores the world of kid creators, centering on the Piper
- 5:24Squad, the group of young creators led by Piper Raquel.
- 5:28So Piper has been famous online for years despite being only 17
- 5:33years old right now, So she has literally just been a kid
- 5:36influencer her entire career. Piper is managed by her mother,
- 5:39Tiffany Smith. In 2022, Tiffany was sued for
- 5:42$22 million by 11 of Piper's collaborators in the Piper
- 5:46Squad, collaborators being the other kids that would make
- 5:50content with her. Tiffany was accused of violating
- 5:52child labor laws, failing to compensate the members, and
- 5:56sexual misconduct. So this is directly from an LA
- 5:59Times article quote. A Times investigation published
- 6:02later that year compiled dozens of court filings, emails,
- 6:05casting calls, talent releases and filming schedules, as well
- 6:08as interviews with plaintiffs and parents, revealing a pattern
- 6:11of controlling and abusive behavior by Smith.
- 6:14In the aftermath of the lawsuit filing, Raquel defended her
- 6:17mother. But this whole case is based on
- 6:19lies that are driven by financial jealousy, Smith told
- 6:22the Times. This suit was eventually settled
- 6:25for $1.85 million last October. However, the plaintiffs and
- 6:29their parents say they still bear the scars from the time in
- 6:32the squad. OK, so we have covered the
- 6:34dangers of child influencers several times on this podcast.
- 6:38There is a lot of content on our feed that you can go into if
- 6:41you're interested in doing a bit more of like a deep dive into
- 6:44that, but there is this one main take away from the docu series
- 6:49that everyone is talking about online.
- 6:51It's from this one part where they talk about how Piper had
- 6:54this fan named Megan who would send her gifts and post fan
- 6:58edits of her. Despite posing as a woman
- 7:00online, people around Piper, including her mother, found out
- 7:03that Megan was actually an older man.
- 7:05Megan poses as a girl online who's a Piper Rock Health fan
- 7:09has all the pictures of Piper. Tiffany said he likes pictures
- 7:16of Piper. He's her stalker.
- 7:19You can get stuff too if you send him pictures.
- 7:21It's nothing bad. It's just extra pictures from
- 7:24photo shoots. But he's a pervert.
- 7:26Like she knew he was a perfect. Regularly, Tiffany, you'd like
- 7:30Piper, like Megan's on the phone and then Piper would go over and
- 7:34be like. Hi, Megan.
- 7:37Just by flirting and sending him photos, Tiffany got herself a
- 7:41Gucci bag from Megan. Piper got a Gucci bag.
- 7:45And I think this segment really just confirms what a lot of
- 7:48experts have been saying, that the parents of these child
- 7:51influencers often do know who is following their kids and they do
- 7:55know who is behind these fan accounts.
- 7:58But they get a lot out of it. So they pander to them
- 8:01regardless of their child's safety.
- 8:03OK, the last word that I have for you guys is that James
- 8:06Charles has talked about the impact of parasocial
- 8:08relationships on his experience at Coachella.
- 8:12We haven't talked about James in a hot minute, and please put
- 8:15your feelings for him aside, OK? Because I do think that this is
- 8:18an interesting story. I'm using this as like a jumping
- 8:21off point. So James Charles has opened up
- 8:23about the parasocial relationships his fans have with
- 8:25him and how this has impacted his experience at Coachella this
- 8:29year amid several changes to the festival.
- 8:32So I guess this year Coachella decided to combine the VIP and
- 8:36artist passes entrances and this has caused some mayhem for the
- 8:40high profile attendees. So in his video, James was
- 8:44talking about how like he loves meeting his fans.
- 8:48A lot of his fans will have the VIP tickets.
- 8:50So he'll like spend a lot of time in VIP with his friends and
- 8:53like he'll meet his fans and stuff.
- 8:55But he doesn't drink and you know, it can get overwhelming.
- 8:57So with the point of having an artist passes, then you can go
- 9:00into an area that is like way more secure.
- 9:03It's like way more chill. And now that they've combined, I
- 9:06don't think they've combined like the full areas.
- 9:07Please confirm for me if you guys know.
- 9:10I think it was just the entrances.
- 9:11But either way, like there is some type of combination that
- 9:14has happened where, yeah, if you bought a VIP ticket as like a
- 9:18regular person, you are also alongside people that have
- 9:20artist passes. And he was saying that has been
- 9:24difficult because, for example, at one point, like one of his
- 9:28fans came up to him and squeezed his face and was like, Oh my
- 9:31God, you're James Charles. And then started picking the
- 9:33pearls off of his makeup, like off of his face that he had on
- 9:361st makeup. So he was like, why did I spend
- 9:38the extra money and get the artist passes when I'm not
- 9:41getting the extra security that is supposed to go along with
- 9:44that? And that did go along with that
- 9:46in years past. It seems like logistically there
- 9:48have been a few issues with Coachella this year.
- 9:51Like I was seeing a lot of issues with like the camping as
- 9:54well, people waiting in line in their cars in 100° heat for like
- 9:58actually 14 hours to find a camping spot and stuff like
- 10:02that. So I don't know if like, things
- 10:04have changed behind the scenes or what, but it sounds like,
- 10:08yeah, it sounds like everyone across the board is having kind
- 10:11of an interesting time. I coach all of this year.
- 10:13This whole situation is really fascinating because first of
- 10:16all, James, he didn't say parasocial relationship, but he
- 10:19said, I know a lot of you guys have grown up with me.
- 10:21And like, as in, I know a lot of you guys feel like you know me
- 10:24and stuff, but like, you don't, which is what Chapel Run was
- 10:28saying last year when she was like, don't ask me for pictures.
- 10:30Obviously, these are very different situations.
- 10:32I'm not trying to compare them, but it just reminded me of that.
- 10:35I can't figure out if this is just like another indication
- 10:38that people don't understand like the people that are like
- 10:41have the purse strengths, right? The people that are like in
- 10:43charge of things, that have the money that are putting things
- 10:46like this on. If it's just like another
- 10:48indication that they just don't understand this new era of
- 10:51culture when it comes to creators and influencers and
- 10:54parasocial relationships, like I typically would say that must
- 10:59not be the case. Like if you are in charge of
- 11:01these decisions for Coachella, like surely you understand these
- 11:05dynamics. However, we have had several
- 11:08instances in the last just few months really with people who
- 11:12are like on the influencer side of things, like in charge on the
- 11:15influencer side of things, in charge on even like the musical
- 11:18artist side of things. And some of the conversations
- 11:21we're having, I'm like, holy shit, how are you the one in
- 11:24charge of budgets? Like you don't understand
- 11:26anything. So I don't know.
- 11:29I, I, I think maybe that's a case of this because I know
- 11:32like, for example, with like Vidcon, OK, the reason why a lot
- 11:35of big Youtubers stopped going to Vidcon years and years ago is
- 11:38because the people in charge of putting on Vidcon didn't
- 11:42actually understand the parasocial relationship that
- 11:45people had for these Youtubers. And the Youtubers would go and
- 11:50if they were not like the top tier, they wouldn't get like
- 11:52these kind of more tight security measures or whatever in
- 11:55place for them put on by Vidcon. And they would just be swarmed.
- 11:58Their safety would be in danger. Like it was just like a disaster
- 12:02for them. So they stopped going because
- 12:03they were like, this is just not worth it for us.
- 12:05And Tana talked about going to Coachella too, right?
- 12:07She talked about that a couple months ago saying like, it's not
- 12:10worth it because the security that I have to pay for because I
- 12:12just get like fucking swarmed. And she was similar to James
- 12:15being like, I love you guys, like I love it, but it's not
- 12:19appropriate to come up to these influencers and like touch them
- 12:22and like grab their face, try to kiss them, start ripping their
- 12:25makeup off. Like shit like that is crazy.
- 12:28It's so inappropriate. It's so scary for these
- 12:30creators. And no matter how you feel about
- 12:33them, nobody should be subjected to anything like that.
- 12:36ANYWAYS, guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 12:39Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
