- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith, friends. I am
- 0:02Tracie. I will be your host today for Fostering
- 0:04Faith. And we are all in new seasons in this
- 0:07household. Gia has officially started high school
- 0:10and she has officially fell in love with high
- 0:12school. She was very anxious and nervous about
- 0:14starting, but then she realized how many people
- 0:16that she knew and how she was able to find friends
- 0:19in all her classes. She was able to make her
- 0:22travel volleyball team. She was able to make
- 0:25the school volleyball team. And so we are all
- 0:27going to be starting off. In new seasons, I get
- 0:31to start school again next week. And so I have
- 0:33been studying and reading already to get ahead
- 0:35of the game. As you know, I feel like this program
- 0:39is going to be challenging, and I want every
- 0:41opportunity just to soak in and not just kind
- 0:43of run over the material, but just to really
- 0:45read it and soak in. And we've had an opportunity
- 0:47to use this computer program called Logos. And
- 0:51if you guys don't have it, if you've never heard
- 0:53of it, look it up. I've been playing with it
- 0:55now for almost two weeks. And there's just so
- 0:58much that is packed into this program. There's
- 1:01probably a free version. We get a version with
- 1:03our school, which is just loads and loads and
- 1:05loads of books in here. I've wrote like six sermons
- 1:08in this program. I mean, it just, it's so good.
- 1:10I just, I'm so excited to get back to school
- 1:14and learn and to do a deep dive and just be surrounded
- 1:16with people to challenge me and to grow me and
- 1:19just, you know, just walk with me in this faith.
- 1:21And so as I foster my own faith, going back to
- 1:24school for my master's in theology. Bible study.
- 1:27I'm super excited to dive into this with you.
- 1:30And so as we get into this episode, we're going
- 1:32to call it Chasing Joy in a Storm. And so welcome
- 1:35back to Fostering Faith. I'm so glad that you're
- 1:36here today because in this episode is for every
- 1:38single one of us who has ever said, Lord, I can't
- 1:41handle the storm. I am not Tinto's Down. I am
- 1:44not Moses. Like I'm not your girl. I'm not your
- 1:46man. Now, I'm not talking about thunderstorms,
- 1:49you know, rolling across Midwest right now. I'm
- 1:51talking about storms in your mind, in your heart
- 1:53and in your soul. Anxiety that keeps you up at
- 1:56night, fear that paralyzes you, stress that makes
- 1:59you feel like you're drowning. But I want you
- 2:01to know something right up front. Joy is not
- 2:04canceled by storms. Happiness? Happiness runs
- 2:08away real fast when life gets hard. But joy?
- 2:12Joy is anchored in Jesus, and it doesn't move
- 2:14just because the wind blows. And so today's episode,
- 2:17we're going to be calling it Chasing Joy in the
- 2:18Storm. But spoiler alert, the whole point is
- 2:22you don't chase joy. You receive it and so in
- 2:25this episode I want you to think about anybody
- 2:27that's suffering with anxiety or feeling overwhelmed
- 2:30and send this episode Send it and then just listen
- 2:32to it with them and then go over it and talk
- 2:34through the points and it's about building community
- 2:36It's about having a tribe. And so if you guys
- 2:38are liking this Episodes make sure that you comment
- 2:42leave us a rating. Let's grow a community together
- 2:45And so let's dive in and so let's start with
- 2:47one of my favorite verses when life feels overwhelming
- 2:49We have Isaiah 41 10 It says do not fear for
- 2:52I am with you. Do not be anxious look about you
- 2:55for I am your God I will strengthen you and surely
- 2:57I will help you. I will uphold you with my right
- 3:01righteous right hand now, please pause Doesn't
- 3:05that sound too good almost too good like if we're
- 3:08being honest because we're in the middle of a
- 3:10panic attack and if you were Been losing sleep
- 3:13at night. Your first thought is not gonna be
- 3:15oh, yeah, I feel God strengthening me. No We're
- 3:18like, where are you, Lord? Because I'm not okay.
- 3:23But that's why this verse is so powerful. Notice
- 3:25that God doesn't start with, here's how I'll
- 3:27fix all your problems. He starts with, do not
- 3:30fear, for I am with you. Bible scholars point
- 3:33out that God's answer to fear isn't a plan. It's
- 3:36His presence. One commentator even said, the
- 3:39antidote to fear is not courage, but company.
- 3:44But isn't that good? It's not about mustering
- 3:46up your inner strength, it's about realizing
- 3:48who you're walking beside. And Matthew Henry,
- 3:51in his old school way, said it like this, when
- 3:53God is with us, we need not fear the most powerful
- 3:56of enemies. In other words, the storm may rage,
- 3:59but the storm doesn't get the last word if God
- 4:01is holding you up with his righteous right hand.
- 4:04Now, let's be real. Fear makes us forget things,
- 4:07doesn't it? When panic hits, your brain goes
- 4:09into survival mode. Your heart races, your palms
- 4:11sweat. And your mind goes, I'm alone. No one
- 4:13understands me. No one can help me. Oh my gosh,
- 4:15what am I going to do? Like all these negative
- 4:17thoughts just race in. But God interprets that
- 4:19lie with his truth. Do not be anxious. Look around
- 4:23you, for I am your God. So think about that image.
- 4:26Anxiously looking about. So if you can't, like
- 4:28if you're panicked, like if you're a mom and
- 4:30you've lost your kid, or they're hiding underneath
- 4:32a clothing rack because I have no idea why kids
- 4:34do that. And it's like this anxiety of looking
- 4:36about. Can't you picture it? It's like being
- 4:39lost in a crowd. It's like you're looking for
- 4:40your kid. You're looking for your kid. Your head
- 4:42is floating around searching for just their voice,
- 4:44their hair, their t -shirt. But then you finally
- 4:48lock eyes with your kid. And he knows you. And
- 4:52that moment feels a flood of relief. And that's
- 4:55what God offers you in panic. Let me put it in
- 4:59everyday terms. Imagine you're in the airport.
- 5:00You're late for a flight. You've panicked. You're
- 5:03scanning signs. And you're running in the wrong
- 5:04direction. And you hear a voice call your name.
- 5:07You turn, and there's your best friend, waving
- 5:09you over, pointing you this way. That's what
- 5:11Isaiah 41 10 is describing. God's saying, stop
- 5:14spinning. I'm right here. I'll lead you. I'll
- 5:17strengthen you, and I'll hold you up. And here's
- 5:20the part that blows me away. He doesn't just
- 5:22say, I'll strengthen you. He repeats himself.
- 5:24I will help you, and I will uphold you. Bible
- 5:27teachers often say that when God repeats something,
- 5:30it's because we need reminding. It's his way
- 5:33of saying, hey, you can count on this. And let's
- 5:37be real for a second. How often do we try to
- 5:39hold ourselves up? We white -knuckle it. We see
- 5:41all the memes of, like, the disarrayed hair.
- 5:43I seen one the other day, and it was this woman
- 5:45carrying up a washer off the subway, um, up the
- 5:49stairs. And I, like, messaged my friend, and
- 5:50I was just like, um, I thought I was gonna have
- 5:52to send this to you because it's, like, this
- 5:54crazy lady, uh, carrying a washer up the stairs
- 5:56and saying, you know what, I'll just do it myself.
- 5:58And so we white -knuckle it. We say things like,
- 6:00I'll just have to push through. I just need to
- 6:02be stronger for my kids, for my spouse, for my
- 6:04job. And God says, actually, you don't. I'm the
- 6:08one holding you up. I don't know what you're
- 6:14facing. I don't know about you, but that takes
- 6:18a weight off of my shoulders. One scholar pointed
- 6:21out that the phrase righteous right hand doesn't
- 6:24mean strength. It means faithful strength. God's
- 6:27right hand never slips. It's not shaky. It's
- 6:30not uncertain. It's perfectly just, perfectly
- 6:32steady, and perfectly good. which means his grip
- 6:35on you is more secure than your grip on him.
- 6:39So if you're listening right now and you feel
- 6:40like you're barely holding on, I've got good
- 6:43news. You don't have to hold on perfectly. God's
- 6:46righteous right hand is already holding you.
- 6:48Let me ask you, what would it feel like if you,
- 6:51instead of trying to run out of panic, you've
- 6:55paused and reminded yourself, wait, God's here.
- 6:58He's got me. He's not letting me fall. That's
- 7:02joy in the middle of your panic not because the
- 7:04storms gone because but because your Savior stayed
- 7:07and So let's let's keep flipping to Philippians
- 7:114 6 through 7 because my biblical boyfriend Paul
- 7:15He writes do not be anxious about anything, but
- 7:17in everything by prayer and supplication with
- 7:19Thanksgiving Let your request be known to God
- 7:22in the peace of God which surpasses all comprehension
- 7:25will guard your hearts in your mind in Jesus
- 7:27Christ Okay, so let's be real Do not be anxious
- 7:31about anything. Paul? Paul's my guy. But that
- 7:35feels impossible. Like, I can't even get through
- 7:38Monday morning without real anxiety creeping
- 7:40in. I mean, what about the bills? What about
- 7:42the doctor's report? What about the interview?
- 7:44What about these kids going back to school and
- 7:46wanting and needing new clothes, and we have
- 7:48lunch bills, and we have this? The kid that just
- 7:50will not listen? Don't be anxious about anything?
- 7:56Paul apparently was never married, never had
- 7:58a mortgage, and didn't have... No kids. But here's
- 8:01the thing. Paul isn't saying, hey, stop it. Just
- 8:05don't be anxious. That would be the worst advice
- 8:09ever. Have you ever had someone tell you in the
- 8:11middle of a panic? Just calm down. Well, that
- 8:14doesn't work. Spoiler alert. It doesn't. It doesn't
- 8:16work. What Paul is doing here is pointing us
- 8:19to exchange. He's saying, yes, you feel anxiety,
- 8:22but here's where you do with it. You hand it
- 8:24over to God in prayer. And one Bible scholar
- 8:27points out it like this, prayer isn't just a
- 8:29conversation, it's a transaction. We bring God
- 8:32to our worries. He gives us his peace. We unload
- 8:40the weight and his hands give us rest in return.
- 8:45And so let's look at the language in everything
- 8:47by prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving.
- 8:50That means all of it, not just the big scary
- 8:54things. but the everyday stuff too. The stress
- 8:57about what to wear, the worry about whether you
- 8:59said the wrong thing in a text message, even
- 9:01the small details that you think are too silly
- 9:03to bring to God. He says everything. We have
- 9:07had this conversation in this house so many times
- 9:11about, did you take that to God? Did you take
- 9:13that to God? And even just in my conversations
- 9:15throughout the day, I mean, did you take that
- 9:17to God? No, I'm not going to bother him with
- 9:19that. It says everything. There is nothing too
- 9:21small and there is nothing too big. And so now
- 9:24I would love what Warner points out where he
- 9:27says, the way to be anxious about nothing is
- 9:30to be prayerful about everything. Isn't that
- 9:33good? Prayer becomes an antidote to anxiety.
- 9:36It's not about ignoring your feelings. It's about
- 9:38inviting God into them. And then Paul says, peace
- 9:41of God, which surpasses all comprehension will
- 9:43guard your hearts and minds. The word guard is
- 9:46a military term. It paints a picture of a soldier
- 9:48standing at the gate of the city. Anxiety tries
- 9:51to storm in. But God's peace is literally standing
- 9:54there saying, nope, not today. And so let me
- 9:58ask you, have you ever prayed and then felt calmer,
- 10:01even though nothing changed about your situation?
- 10:04That's the verse. That's the peace of God. It
- 10:07doesn't always change the circumstances, but
- 10:09prayer changes you. Tim Mackey from The Bible
- 10:13Project explains it like this. Peace or shalom
- 10:15isn't just absence of conflict. It's wholeness.
- 10:18It's everything in its right place. So when God's
- 10:22peace guard your heart, he's putting your chaos
- 10:24back in order. Even in the storms around you,
- 10:26you're still raging. So here's the part I love
- 10:28the most. This peace, the surpassing understanding,
- 10:31which means sometimes you can't explain why you're
- 10:33okay. You just are. You should be falling apart.
- 10:36You should be panicking. And yet you're steady
- 10:39because God's peace is holding you. It's not
- 10:43logic. It's the Holy Spirit. Let me paint this
- 10:46for you. Imagine your life is a castle. Anxiety.
- 10:50is invading army, pounding at the gates, let
- 10:53me in, let me in. Normally, you just let it in
- 10:57and suddenly your mind is filled with panic.
- 10:59But whenever you pray, God's peace literally
- 11:02stations soldiers at the gates of your heart.
- 11:05They're standing guard. And so when anxiety comes
- 11:07screaming, let me in, peace answers the door
- 11:09and says, sorry, this place is protected. And
- 11:13I can say that sometimes prayer itself is the
- 11:17hardest part. Right? Because whenever you're
- 11:20anxious, you don't even have the words. You don't
- 11:21even have the... You don't even have to feel
- 11:23eloquent. You don't even have to feel spiritual.
- 11:25You just feel heavy. And there's a saying, God
- 11:28isn't greeting your vocabulary. And thank God
- 11:31for that. He's listening to your heart. And sometimes
- 11:33the most powerful prayer is help. Lord, help
- 11:37me. And let me ask you this. When was the last
- 11:40time you actually gave your anxiety to God instead
- 11:42of carrying it yourself? I'm not asking whenever
- 11:44you last talked about your anxiety. I'm asking
- 11:47whenever did you lay it down, open hands and
- 11:50say, God, I can't carry this. It's yours now.
- 11:54I think a lot of us pray like we're holding the
- 11:57weight and we say, God, please take this from
- 11:58me. But we never let it go. We walk out the prayer
- 12:01and carry the same baggage that we walked in
- 12:03with. But true prayers, the Lord says, the Lord,
- 12:07I'm done. This is yours. And so here's a challenge.
- 12:11The next time that your chest feels tight, your
- 12:13thoughts are racing and you're spiraling. Stop.
- 12:17Just stop. Put your hands out like you're holding
- 12:19something heavy and then slowly release it as
- 12:22you pray. It's a physical act that says, Lord,
- 12:25I'm not carrying this anymore. I lay it down
- 12:28because here's the truth. Joy is found whenever
- 12:30you finally stop wrestling with your thoughts
- 12:32and let God guard them instead. And so let's
- 12:37talk about Elijah. If there's ever a prophet
- 12:41who had a front seat row to the power of God,
- 12:43it was him. And you have 1 Kings 18. You have
- 12:46Elijah on Mount Carmel, standing against 450
- 12:48prophets of Baal. And it's the epic showdown.
- 12:51His prayers fire literally falls from heaven.
- 12:54God proves himself in a jaw dropping dramatic
- 12:56way. And I mean, it would be on all of the news
- 13:00reels. It would be all over Instagram. It would
- 13:01be all over the things. I mean, if you and I
- 13:03were thinking Elijah is untouchable, this guy
- 13:06has all of the faith in the world. But then you
- 13:11have chapter 19 and suddenly Elijah is running
- 13:13for his life Terrified of Jezebel and collapses
- 13:16under a broom tree. So he's discouraged that
- 13:19literally asked God to take his life Talk about
- 13:21a crash out talk about your he's ready to crash.
- 13:23He just crashed He just crashed out and and can
- 13:26we just pause it for a second because this isn't
- 13:29That isn't that kind of like real life one day
- 13:31you feel like you're on top of the world spiritually
- 13:33strong full of faith and quoting scripture and
- 13:34like all the things and God send me where you
- 13:36want to go in the very next day your burnout,
- 13:38like, I'm not your girl, I'm not 10 toes down,
- 13:40like, pick somebody else, I'm Moses, like, go
- 13:41get Aaron. You feel overwhelmed, and you're wondering
- 13:43if you can even keep going on. Bible commentators
- 13:46note that Elijah's despair doesn't make him weak.
- 13:49It makes him human. Even the strongest believers
- 13:51hit walls. Even prophets who call down fire get
- 13:54tired, discouraged, and feel hopeless. Now notice
- 13:57what God does next. He doesn't rebuke him. He
- 14:00doesn't say, are you serious? After everything
- 14:03I just did, you're going to doubt me now? No.
- 14:07God sends an angel. And what does the angel bring?
- 14:11Food, water, and rest. Sometimes the most spiritual
- 14:14things you can do is take a nap and eat a sandwich,
- 14:17hopefully without bread. Can I get an amen? I
- 14:20mean, get you some salami and cheese, wrap it
- 14:22up, and call it a day. And we have Warren Wartersby
- 14:27that makes this point. God knows our frame. He
- 14:29remembers that we were dust. In other words,
- 14:32God knows that we're fragile. He doesn't treat
- 14:34us like we're superheroes. He treats us like
- 14:36children. who need Him. And I love this. Elijah
- 14:40sleeps, eats, drinks, and then sleeps again.
- 14:44The angel doesn't even rush him. It's like God
- 14:46is saying, I know you're at the end of yourself,
- 14:49so let's start with basics. Let me put this into
- 14:53our world now. Maybe your despair isn't fixed
- 14:56by another Bible study or another motivational
- 14:58podcast. Maybe you want and need a first time
- 15:01to rest, to hydrate, to let God remind you. you're
- 15:04human because here's the truth sometimes the
- 15:06spirit isn't lack of faith it's lack of margin
- 15:08you've been running so hard carrying so much
- 15:11that your body and soul finally crashes and god
- 15:13in his kindness says rest child i'm still here
- 15:17and i'll be here whenever you get up isn't that
- 15:20like whenever you were sick and you like laid
- 15:22in your mom and dad's lap and um like whenever
- 15:25you woke up like he felt you slept for 10 years
- 15:26and they were still there I remember times whenever
- 15:29Dia was like little or just even maybe mid teenager
- 15:32and she's, you know, just 14 now. But I mean,
- 15:35she was like, oh my gosh, I can't believe that
- 15:36you're still here. Maybe I am not going to leave
- 15:38you. I am a busy person and I love, love to be
- 15:41on the move. But if you need me, I am here. And
- 15:44just think of that because your Heavenly Father
- 15:46loves you more. And then maybe you came from
- 15:49an environment where you didn't have parents
- 15:50to sit down. You didn't have that luxury of them
- 15:52and of parents that were loving. But know that
- 15:54you have a Heavenly Father that says child rest.
- 15:57I am here, and I'll be here whenever you get
- 15:59up. And so let me ask you, have you ever felt
- 16:02guilty for being tired? Like you should be stronger,
- 16:05more spiritual, more put together. And Elijah
- 16:07shows us that even God's prophets hit burnout,
- 16:10and God's response wasn't guilt, it was grace.
- 16:13And here's the part that gets me. After Elijah
- 16:15is strengthened, God speaks to him again, not
- 16:18in the wind, not in the earthquake, and not in
- 16:21the fire, but in a gentle whisper. Isn't that
- 16:24beautiful? That sometimes that whenever we're
- 16:27in despair, we're looking for God in dramatic
- 16:28ways and like earthquakes and fire and a burning
- 16:31bush. But he comes in close and quiet. And one
- 16:35commentary puts it this way. God does not always
- 16:37manifest himself in extraordinary ways, but often
- 16:39in the simple, the ordinary, and the gentle.
- 16:43That means joy doesn't come with fireworks. Sometimes
- 16:45it comes like a whisper in the dark that says,
- 16:48I'm still here. Let me... say this like a different
- 16:52way. So picture a mom who's going non -stop,
- 16:54which we just talked about, packing lunches,
- 16:55doing laundry, working full -time, and she finally
- 16:58sits down on the couch, literally spent, and
- 17:00her little one crawls in her lap, rests her head
- 17:03on her shoulders and says, I love you. In that
- 17:06moment, nothing on her to -do list changed, but
- 17:10joy showed up. Or think about someone who's grieving.
- 17:14The loss is heavy, the house feels empty, but
- 17:16a friend stops by with a meal, sits quietly on
- 17:19the couch. and just listens. No big speeches,
- 17:22no fireworks, just presence. That's God's whisper.
- 17:27So here's the takeaway. Joy in despair doesn't
- 17:30always look like God removing the storm. Sometimes
- 17:33it looks like God's spinning and sending you
- 17:35to rest, reminding you to eat and whisper, I've
- 17:38got you. So if you're in despair right now, please
- 17:41hear this. God is not disappointed in you. He
- 17:43knows that you are human. You are not perfect.
- 17:46This is not a shock to him. And his provisions
- 17:48will meet you. in ways that you might overlook
- 17:51through sleep, through a meal, through a friend's
- 17:54encouragement, and through his word softly reminding
- 17:57you, do not fear, for I am with you. And so as
- 18:02we are getting close to the end, I do want to
- 18:05encourage to rate and review and share this podcast
- 18:08with people that you feel need rest, that are
- 18:11in the middle of a storm, that does not know
- 18:13where joy is. And so let's jump into Matthew
- 18:1511, 28 through 30. Jesus says, come to me, all
- 18:19who are weary and burdened, and I will give you
- 18:20rest. Take upon my yoke and learn from me, for
- 18:23I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will
- 18:25find rest in our souls. For my yoke is easy and
- 18:27my burden is light. Now, let's stop, because
- 18:30that doesn't just look like, you know, so great,
- 18:35does it? Because it doesn't just sound like water
- 18:37to a dry throat. It's I will give you rest. I
- 18:41don't know about you, but I feel like those words
- 18:43hit different in today's world. We live in a
- 18:46culture that glorifies busy, hustle harder, grind
- 18:48longer, sleep when you're dead, right? Even compete
- 18:52over who's the most exhausted. I only slept for
- 18:54four hours last night. Oh, I only slept for three.
- 18:56Oh, I've not slept in 24 hours. But Jesus comes
- 18:59in and flips the whole culture upside down. He
- 19:01doesn't say, come to me and I'll give you a longer
- 19:04to -do list. He doesn't say, come to me and I'll
- 19:06give you more hustle. He says, I'll give you
- 19:09rest. Now, here's the kicker. He's not talking
- 19:12about taking a nap. He's talking about a weekend
- 19:14getaway. He's not talking about a weekend getaway
- 19:16with Netflix binging or whatever. Those might
- 19:19give you distraction, but not rest. Jesus is
- 19:21talking about soul rest, a deep healing and a
- 19:24renewal that nothing in the world can duplicate.
- 19:27Bible scholars point out that the word rest here
- 19:29is an act of rest. It's not laziness or avoidance.
- 19:33It's renewal. It's the kind of rest that restores
- 19:35you whenever you're walking. And there was a
- 19:38quote by Warner Warpsy that says, true rest is
- 19:41not the absence of activity, but the presence
- 19:43of God in our activities. In other words, Jesus
- 19:45isn't inviting you to run away from life. He's
- 19:48inviting you to walk with him in life at his
- 19:51pace, under his strength. And we've done some
- 19:53episodes and I've done some videos about pace
- 19:56and, you know, fast husband or fast wives and
- 19:58slow husbands. It's about walking with him. He's
- 20:00saying, take my hand. And now look at the invitation.
- 20:02Take my poke, my yoke upon you and learn from
- 20:05me. I know, yoke isn't a word that we use today.
- 20:08A yoke was a wooden harness placed over two animals,
- 20:11usually oxen, so they could plow the field together.
- 20:14So here's the thing. A yoke always has one stronger
- 20:16ox that carried most of the weight, and the weaker
- 20:19one walked alongside him and kept step. Do you
- 20:22see the picture? Jesus is painting. He's saying,
- 20:25walk with me. I'll carry the weight. You stay
- 20:28close. You don't have to force... This field
- 20:31alone like you're not doing this alone. I'm here
- 20:33with you I love this because it doesn't just
- 20:35say take my yoke. He says learn from me This
- 20:38means the rest isn't about collapsing. It's about
- 20:40this. It's about discipleship It's about letting
- 20:43Jesus teach you a new rhythm a new way of living
- 20:46That's not crushing not suffocating but life
- 20:48-giving and then he describes himself gentle
- 20:50and humble and hard Can we pause right there?
- 20:53Because for some of us, it's not the picture
- 20:56of God we grew up with. Some of us grew up with
- 20:58a God that was harsh, demanding, impossible to
- 21:00please. But Jesus says, no, that's not who I
- 21:03am. I am gentle. I am humble. My heart towards
- 21:09you is kind. And one commentator pointed out
- 21:11that this is one place in the gospel where Jesus
- 21:13describes his own heart. Isn't that wild? Out
- 21:16of all the things that he could have said, he
- 21:18says, I am gentle and humble. That's the heart
- 21:21that offers you rest. And notice the promise
- 21:23that you'll find rest for your souls. And not
- 21:26maybe. Not if you earn. Not if you get it together.
- 21:31He says, you will. And let me make this real.
- 21:35Think about the times that you've chased rest
- 21:37in counterfeit ways. Maybe it's scrolling through
- 21:39social media for an hour. You don't feel rested
- 21:41after. You feel more drained. Maybe it's real
- 21:44tail therapy. You buy the things and for five
- 21:46minutes you're happy. Then the package arrives
- 21:48and now you've got more clutter. and less money.
- 21:51Maybe it's numbing with food or binging a show
- 21:53or even throwing yourself into work to avoid
- 21:55dealing with your feelings. And yet none of it
- 21:58touches your soul. Jesus says, come to me, not
- 22:02go to that thing, not escape to that distraction.
- 22:06Come to me and I will give you what none of those
- 22:09can. And can I just get real practical here?
- 22:12Coming to Jesus doesn't always mean packing up
- 22:15your life and moving to a monastery. Sometimes
- 22:17it's what? as simple as pausing in the car before
- 22:19work and saying, Lord, I can't do this day without
- 22:22you. Be my strength. Sometimes choosing to listen
- 22:26to worship music instead of news. Sometimes it's
- 22:28reading a single verse and carrying it in your
- 22:30pocket all day. Those little moments come from
- 22:34Him and add up to real rest. And so let me ask
- 22:36you, what would your life look like if you actually
- 22:41lived at Jesus' space instead of the world's?
- 22:44Instead of running 100 miles an hour trying to
- 22:46prove yourself, You walked with him, trusting
- 22:49he's carrying the heavier end of the yoke. How
- 22:51would your life look? I'll tell you what it looked
- 22:55like. It would look like joy. Joy isn't shaken
- 22:59by storms, joy that doesn't come from everything
- 23:02being perfect, but from walking with the one
- 23:04who is perfect. And here's the thing. Jesus'
- 23:06rest isn't passive. It's not an escape from responsibilities.
- 23:09It's not empowerment to live differently. It's
- 23:12empowerment to live differently. He's saying,
- 23:14walk with me, trust my heart. and let me carry
- 23:17the weight. And you'll find joy even there, even
- 23:19now, even in the storm. And maybe that's exactly
- 23:22what you need today. Maybe you're running at
- 23:23the pace that's crushing you. Maybe you're trying
- 23:26to carry the load that was never yours to carry.
- 23:28And I have a picture on my computer in my office
- 23:30that says, it's a little wagon that I drew. And
- 23:33I have a message out and it says, was I meant
- 23:36to carry this burden? And if I wasn't, I hand
- 23:38it over because I have to have daily reminders
- 23:40everywhere in every room. And Jesus is looking
- 23:42you in the eye with gentleness and humility saying,
- 23:45come to me. Let it go, and I'll give you rest.
- 23:48And so here's the invitation. That's the promise.
- 23:51And that's where joy is found. And so I hope
- 23:54this episode inspired you. In this world of illusions,
- 24:03how can you find joy in your real life? What
- 24:06does this look like in real life? Could it look
- 24:09like if you're a teacher stressed out about testing
- 24:11and students leaving you a kind note, joy shows
- 24:14up? If your mom in the garden weeds everywhere
- 24:17and your child brings you a flower with sticky
- 24:18fingers, joy shows up. If you're a college student
- 24:21drowning in finals, but you share your faith
- 24:25with a friend, joy shows up. You're at work,
- 24:28deadlines are crushing you, but you pray at lunch
- 24:31and joy will show up. If you're a student and
- 24:33you're feeling the pressure to fit in and you
- 24:36choose integrity, joy will show up. If you're
- 24:39a parent that is exhausted, but you carve out
- 24:41five minutes with your Bible, joy will show up.
- 24:44If you're serving at church in your community
- 24:46and you will feel God's smile, joy will show
- 24:48up. If you're in a small group, tired from the
- 24:51week, and the laughter and the prayer remind
- 24:53you, you're not alone. Joy will show up. Joy
- 24:57doesn't always come with fireworks, but sometimes
- 24:59it comes with a whisper, sticky fingers, and
- 25:01little reminders that God is with you. And so
- 25:05let's put it all together. Presence and panic,
- 25:07God says, I'm with you. Peace with prayer, hand
- 25:11him your worries, and he guards your heart. Provision
- 25:13and despair, God meets your physical and spiritual
- 25:16needs with grace. And rest in Christ. Joy comes
- 25:19whenever you stop chasing and start receiving.
- 25:22And so here's my challenge for you this week.
- 25:24Whenever you're feeling the storm arise, panic,
- 25:26fear, anxiety, don't chase joy in people, purchases,
- 25:30or performance. Pause, breathe, and pray this.
- 25:35Lord, I don't want to chase joy anymore. I want
- 25:38to receive yours. Anchor me in your presence
- 25:40and fill me with your peace. Provide me in the
- 25:43weakness and give me rest in you." And so friends,
- 25:47the storms will come, but joy doesn't run whenever
- 25:51the rain starts. Joy stays because Jesus stays.
- 25:55So thank you so much for listening to us today
- 25:58at Fostering Faith. If this encouraged you, share
- 26:00with a friend who's in a storm right now and
- 26:02remember that joy in the Lord isn't fragile.
- 26:05It's unshakable. And so until next time, keep
- 26:07fostering your faith, keep walking in joy. that's
- 26:09already yours in Christ. Have a great week. We
- 26:12love you guys.
