- 0:00Back with GINO live till the top of the hour. Tomorrow, the women
- 0:04will take on eighteenth rank Louisville at ten and one, coach by Jeff Walls.
- 0:09Dev Fist joins me for the broadcast eleven thirty tomorrow morning with a tip
- 0:13at twelve oh five. That's a Fox National TV game, but we prefer
- 0:17you be in the stands and you can listen to us on the Yukon Sports
- 0:20Network as well. Speaking of Louisville, GINO, Jeff's done a nice job
- 0:25retooling his team. He loses a few, particularly Haley van lifts of the
- 0:28transfer portal, but he brings in a couple including a young lady from JMU
- 0:32and Kiki Jefferson who's off to a fantastic start with his team. And the
- 0:37two things that stand out they force turnovers, they rebound well once again,
- 0:41another opponent that you got a tough matchup against. Yeah, they're a little
- 0:49bit different this year in that they they're used to having a real dominant go
- 1:02to offensive player. You know, whether that was Haleyvanly last year or you
- 1:06know it was Dina Evans or dr you know you Angel Angel. You know,
- 1:12they're used to having really a dominant offensive player. And this year it's
- 1:19more spread out. You know, they've done a better job of putting it
- 1:26together, not having that that one, that one dominant player. So instead
- 1:32of having somebody getting twenty, they've got you know, seven or eight kids
- 1:37all getting between eight, ten, twelve, you know, a game,
- 1:42which makes them a little bit more difficult to defend. You know when you
- 1:45like when there's one dominant player, because you know what what the object is.
- 1:49You know, you know what you've got to do. So that's one
- 1:53thing. The other is they they they try to steal it from you every
- 2:00chance they get. Okay, whether it's full court, three quarter, a
- 2:01coord have court, it doesn't matter. Everything they do is they're trying to
- 2:05steal the vote from me. And they shoot. They shoot forty five percent
- 2:14from the floor, not a lot of three is about five per game.
- 2:19Yeah, but when you look at their true shooting percentage, it's like thirty.
- 2:25So it gets to forty five because all their second shots that they put
- 2:29in they get to the free throw line, and they get to the free
- 2:30throw line a lot, which those two things go together. Yeah, the
- 2:34more offensive rebounds you get and you in a position to go back up with
- 2:38it. The more fouls you accumulate. So that's the you know, the
- 2:45game plan. They've almost taken one hundred more free throws in the opposition.
- 2:49Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, we still do that. We still do
- 2:52that. We used to do that. Right now, your mind is three
- 2:53in that department. Yeah well yeah, yeah, this is a lot of
- 3:00minuses right now. But KK has been getting the line a lot, a
- 3:05la a lot, page a lot lately. Over the last five pages taken
- 3:08twenty six, Elia has taken five. In the last twenty last three,
- 3:13Kk's been a line fifteen times. That's what you need. You know,
- 3:16you need easy baskets, you know, the South Carolina, the North Carolina,
- 3:23the third quarter. Those baskets were generated by by our defense. And
- 3:28you need to get to the free throw line because those are easy baskets.
- 3:30Okay, if you have to constantly bring the ball up the floor and the
- 3:36defense is waiting for you because they just scored, you know, and you
- 3:40didn't get you know, you're not rebounding and running transition, so they just
- 3:45scored. Now their defense is always set. That's a hard way. That's
- 3:50a hard way to win. You know, that's a hard way to win.
- 3:53That's that would be an equivalent of football right now, running the ball
- 3:58sixty times. They can't win like that. You know, you you've got
- 4:02to get easy transition baskets, you know, where you're you're attacking them before
- 4:09they get set defensively. You know, a lot of mistakes are made when
- 4:13people are running back on defense. Who's got that guy? I got that
- 4:15guy? No, I got that guy, No, I got that guy.
- 4:17And you're getting open shots while all that's going on. And when we
- 4:23create that scenario, we we do very we do really really well because that's
- 4:30where most of your wide open threes come from. In transition, is the
- 4:35ball movement on offense as good as you'd like to see it in the half
- 4:40court, there's that's a little work in progress. You know. There's what
- 4:48and slang, you know the besketball shoot the rock, right is now what
- 4:54they say? Shoot the rock? You know, I can really handle the
- 4:57rock, you know, and I got a yeah. It's and there's a
- 5:00sort of thing that the ball when it's moving a lot, it's light.
- 5:08The ball just it's almost like one touch passes in hockey, you know or
- 5:12soccer. You know, the ball's moving from here, to there, to
- 5:15that guy to that guy. Bang the ball's light well, right now it's
- 5:21a huge rock. That ball doesn't move as well as it's ever moved.
- 5:29It's it's this is probably the worst ball movement that we've had over the first
- 5:33nine games of any any team I've ever had. It's just, you know,
- 5:42we have we have too many players playing that have not played, so
- 5:46everything's too fast for them, and players are you know, when we put
- 5:55Page back in the lineup, that's screwed up our whole team. I mean,
- 5:58it sounds stupid, but it's screwed up our whole team because now you
- 6:00know, last year with Dorka and Lou, you know, we had two
- 6:04fifth year seniors, right and Nika had the ball all the time in her
- 6:11hands all the time. So now everybody's had to get used to Paige being
- 6:16in the lineup because obviously, for obvious reasons, Paige is going to have
- 6:20the ball in her hands a lot. So that doesn't just happen overnight where
- 6:26you just go, Okay, that's an easy transition. It's not. It's
- 6:30not. So it's taken some time. That's why sometimes it looks great and
- 6:34sometimes it looks god awful, but it'll you know, the more we play
- 6:40and the more we spend time on the court together, the better it'll be.
- 6:44Okay, all right, we'll update the injury bug for this team,
- 6:46and then we'll get the folks here involved with some Q and A with head
- 6:50coach Gino Riama here on the Yukon Women's Basketball Coaches Show on lear Field.
- 6:54Stay with us,
