- 0:07The Kansas City Royals faced the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for game 3 of the ALCS on October 12, 1976.
- 0:15The best of five series was tied at one game apiece.
- 0:19This is the national broadcast of game 3 featuring announcers Ernie Harwell and Ned Martin.
- 0:24Inside Hywens, ball runner John.
- 0:306-90, one day game today from the Phillies and 6-90.
- 0:33And the Chief Benashley Championship Series, three victories for none.
- 0:38Here's the pitch. He claims there's a bite from up center, it's in for a hit.
- 0:42That comes over to field it. Brett racing for third before we go to second.
- 0:45Man on first, man on third. One man down, Royals lead 1-0.
- 0:50Mayberry getting his second hit of the playoff. Moving Brett into third.
- 0:55You notice Ernie how without any hesitation at all, Brett went right on into third base as they ran on Roy White's arm.
- 1:03And they'll do it on Mickey Rivers the same way.
- 1:05And anything hit out there, usually a runner with that play in front of him will kind of wait a minute to see if there's a chance.
- 1:11But there was no sweat at all. He just went on in there and White 3 wins the second.
- 1:16Here's Hal McRae now who finished second through his teammate Brett in the batting race, but he's 0-7 in the championship series so far.
- 1:24He's had one walk. Right-hander against the right-hander.
- 1:29Alice delivered to the lay. Cut him in the neck to slide a fool in.
- 1:33Royals lead it, one to nothing in the opening inning. They got a man at first and a man at third.
- 1:43Grant Jackson throwing in the Yankee both end, the left-hander.
- 1:46As they fly ball him into medium depth right-hander. Now it's a little shorter.
- 1:50Maddox comes in, makes the catch. His Brett heading for home. He's a throw to the plateThe monster, he slides and he is safe.
- 1:56Maddox was not too good a throw. A good throw might have picked him off.
- 2:05The Royals now lead it to the loving. Mayberry held it first.
- 2:10It will be a petrified fly off the batting of Gray for the second out. Getting Brett home after the catch with each score from third.
- 2:18Royals still in the jumping for a inning.
- 2:23East Polkette batting 3-3-3The left-hander batting right fielder with 2 for 6 for the series.
- 2:30And the three runs batted in. That's a cop down the Kansas City club in that department.
- 2:37East of the left-hander batting. Tom Polkette.
- 2:40He takes the ball. It gets by Muntzen. There goes Mayberry to second. We'll wait for the score decision on that one.
- 2:47The pitch is a little bit low and toward the end side of the left-hand batter.
- 2:52It is a cast ball.
- 2:58Billy Martin has gone out to the mound now to talk for Daly and with his special Muntzen.
- 3:05The Royals have jumped in for up. They've got a 2-0 lead over the Yankees.
- 3:10Incidentally, the Yankees now have opened up the left field bleachers for the first time since they've reconstructed Yankee Stadium.
- 3:17And that will expand the capacity to about 57,000The original capacity around 54,000 in this ballpark.
- 3:26Up they've opened up those bleachers now in the left for the first time.
- 3:30The conference is over at the plate. One and all the count on Polkette. Man on second base, Mayberry.
- 3:36And the Royals have a 2-0 lead in the very first inning.
- 3:40Third game of the championship series. It's tied right now, 1-2.
- 3:46Cut in the mid. That was a fast ball about belt-high from Doc Ellis, Yankee right-hander.
- 3:52Mayberry with a fair-sized lead on second.
- 3:58Polkette leaning and waiting. Here it comes. He swings a bonnie ball to first base hit.
- 4:04Inside the bag, Carom's off the seat. In the score, easily comes Mayberry. Here's Maddox who's slow to second.
- 4:10Not in time. He's five-pin head first. It'll be a double.
- 4:14Maddox went over to play it on the Carom and he slipped a little bit.
- 4:18I believe it would have been a two-bagger anywayThe official score gives him two.
- 4:22And it is three-nothing in favor of the Royals.
- 4:26And Tom Polkette goes on the two and he doesn't get out of it.
- 4:29Didn't play that much against Boston this year, but he comes fully credited with a live bat.
- 4:36And he's a hard-nosed player too. He's run into a few fences and he's a short career.
- 4:41And paid the price, but they say he's quite a batter.
- 4:45This point, White, the right-hand batting infielder.
- 4:49Royals lead at three-nothing against Doc Ellison, the Yankees.
- 4:52There's Ellison. Slider is outside.
- 4:55White has one hit for six.
- 5:01Now the set and the pitch gets a strike on the inside corner.
- 5:05Rivers has played just about every hitter to hit to the opposite side.
- 5:11He's over in the right center down, the right-hand batting White.
- 5:15And it's ready to deliver. Here's a swing and a miss on the breaking ball.
- 5:19One and two to count on White.
- 5:22Three to nothing to the Royals in front.
- 5:30As Tom, he takes the ball, catches the swing and fire and held off.
- 5:35Two to the count on White.
- 5:39Native of Kansas City.
- 5:42Oh, Kett meeting down our second. Ellis delivers.
- 5:44Here's a ball. White, fastball.
- 5:46Over and away. Three and two.
- 5:50Doc Ellison's had a struggle here in the opening inning.
- 5:53He's given up three runs and three hits.
- 5:55He's into the walk.
- 5:57Now Kett, going to be three-two.
- 6:00He's a top-up in the inning. It's over near first base.
- 6:03He's established his hundred. He has it and the side retires.
- 6:10Three runs on the three hits for the Royals.
- 6:12No Yankee errors. One man left.
- 6:14And in the middle of the first inning, Kansas City three, New York coming to bat.

- 7:24There's more to comeThe World Series starts October 16th. That's next Saturday.
- 7:29And you'll hear exclusive radio coverage play-by-play of the 1976 World Series right here on this CBS Radio Network station.
- 7:39Andy Hasler, the hard-crowing left-hander, goes to work by teammates.
- 7:44It's taken to a 3-0 lead. He'll be facing Mickey Rivers leading off for the Yankees.
- 7:49The Yankees are tired tonight and their famous pinstripes.
- 7:57They started wearing those pinstripes across their one-time owner, Jacob Rupert.
- 8:01Thought that Babe Ruth looked a little too fat and pinstripes might make them seem thinner.
- 8:06And they've worn them ever since.
- 8:08Mickey Rivers leaning and waiting. He's a speedster.
- 8:11Braddison close at third base. Hasler about ready to go into action.
- 8:18Hasler with a 5-12 record this year. He didn't have any record against the Yankees, one and all.
- 8:23Here's the pick outside, ball one.
- 8:30Outfield to the left on the Mickey Rivers. 3-0 to the Royals in the lead in the opening inning.
- 8:36Now to wind up by the left-hander, the pick on the way. He takes the ball outside.
- 8:41So the Yankee fans are coming to life a little bit now in the opening inning.
- 8:51Brad in very close. He's about two or three yards into the under grass.
- 8:56Inside at third base. Now Hasler, the tall left-hander, picks and delivers.
- 9:00It's a strike on the inside corner.
- 9:09Hasler's carry about even with a bag and wide of it over first base.
- 9:13Leadoff man Rivers waits on a 2-1, but over here it comes.
- 9:16He takes the fastball wide, a 3-1 on Mickey.
- 9:20Hasler says he feels good now, though he's had back trouble.
- 9:24He was hurt when he tried to restrain Don Baylor.
- 9:27You'll remember in that break at the Oakland.
- 9:30And he has a poultice on his back to keep him in shape.
- 9:34There's a strike call. He's got a curve over.
- 9:38Hasler has been consulting with the hypnotist.
- 9:44A gentleman named Dr. Ekin Allen, A-L-L-Y-N in Los Angeles,
- 9:50who helped out Mari Wills, Roberta Fomente, and Ken Norton, among others.
- 9:55Here's a 3-2 serve now to Rivers.
- 9:58He claims a bounty ball, hit wide at third.
- 10:00His contact with it for the first.
- 10:02Down in time, Rivers kicks it out.
- 10:05Speed, and Mickey Rivers picks up the single for him.
- 10:09Man on first for New York, nobody down, and it'll be Roy White to swift batter.
- 10:22Roy, one of the top hitters in the first two games, hitting 375.
- 10:26That's three-three.
- 10:27Two of them double, and he has two runs by the end.
- 10:33So Rivers, who has tremendous speed,
- 10:36taps one on the left out of the infield and beats it out.
- 10:39Royals lead, clean up in first inning.
- 10:42Here's a strike call.
- 10:44George Maloney said so. He's a playdumb by.
- 10:49Buck Martin is going out to talk again with his competitor, Andy Hasler.
- 10:54One thing he might be saying, honey, is that he took a look down there,
- 10:57and a long look at Rivers, who was well off the bag at first.
- 11:00He bluffs the throw down there, didn't throw, and then he kept looking at Rivers,
- 11:04and maybe he wanted to stay to half, or hey, watch him over there.
- 11:07Now White digging in, strike one count on him.
- 11:12He's set by the left-hander, half-frame looks over the first.
- 11:15He pitches at the bunt, missed, throw to first, he's safe.
- 11:18That was close.
- 11:20Bill Haller, umpire, right on top of the player.
- 11:23Strike two with a count on White.
- 11:26In the Yankee system, the Billy Martin system,
- 11:28The runners do not go unless they get permission from the bench.
- 11:31They have to get the sign.
- 11:38Rick Haller coaches his third, Elston Howard, the first base coach for the New Yorkers.
- 11:42Royals play the Yankees first inning clean-hubbing at Yankee Stadium.
- 11:48Now they're set by the tall left-hander, half the river's go.
- 11:51The pitcher's swung on and fouled away.
- 11:53That one hit on a high hop and bounced over the Yankee right-hander into the box seat.
- 11:57The first call was even thrown out by...
- 12:00Cincinnati won their game this afternoon at Riverfront Stadium,
- 12:037-6 over to Philly.
- 12:05They gain a three-game sweep over to Philly and win the National League tennis.
- 12:11They won those games 6-3, 6-2, and today they won 7-6.
- 12:16Our congratulations to the Cincinnati Reds.
- 12:20White digging in now, waiting on a strike two delivery from Haslund.
- 12:25Rivers go where the lead doesn't go.
- 12:27The pitch is wide, and the count is 1-2 now on Roy White.
- 12:35Brett Deeper at third base with two strikes on the batter.
- 12:39Hot-Tec and Randolph, the two-stone combination about in double play depth.
- 12:43And Mayberry trying to keep Rivers close, but Rivers has a team-sized lead at the moment.
- 12:49The pitch to White is outside.
- 12:51Rivers holding on at first.
- 12:54Haslund trying to get the breaking kick over, and the miss on that one.
- 13:10Throw to first to Mayberry, and the bat easily is Rivers.
- 13:21Now White is spread out at the plate, waits on the next delivery.
- 13:25He takes outside, that'll make it 3-2.
- 13:30You know they really keep an eye on Mickey Rivers over their first base.
- 13:39Royos lead the Yanks, 3-0 in the opening inning.
- 13:42Rivers with a bigger lead.
- 13:44He goes, the pitch is put on, missed.
- 13:46Throw to second by Martinez.
- 13:47He is out at second.
- 13:48It is a double play.
- 13:50White covered the bag and took the tie down, Rivers cut down on the seal attempt as Roy White struck out.
- 14:02That makes it two down, but the race is empty.
- 14:05And here is Thurman Munson, a very fine, hanky-panky.
- 14:12Munson hitting 3 for 10 and even 300 for the series.
- 14:15One RBI and one extra base hit, that was a double.
- 14:21Right hand about a wedding and Hasler deals a breaking ball outside.
- 14:26Hasler has good speed, a fast ball that runs away from the right hand batter, down and away to him.
- 14:34Royos 3-0 New York coming, first inning.
- 14:37Yanks took back, they've got the race is empty now in two downs.
- 14:40There's a cap foul right down in the dirt at the plate.
- 14:44Good throw net by Martinez right on the target.
- 14:47If there had to be right on the target too, the Rivers going,
- 14:50they could have got a pretty good jump, but not an exceptional one.
- 14:53But it was a good fast ball and that was a good one to get off the bases for Kansas City.
- 15:01And a half for Chakarie Stein with Martinez ready to work again.
- 15:04They won one delivery, Munson takes a half cut.
- 15:07He'll check with Hasler and he says he won a cross if he strikes.
- 15:11Maloney at a plate umpire took a look to the umpire first base, Joe Haller.
- 15:16Check on that one and Haller said he went across.
- 15:1822 to count on Munson.
- 15:24Hasler, he's a big guy, ready to go to work again.
- 15:28He rocks into action, he pitches, there's a bombing foul down past Hickhouser, the third base coach.
- 15:41There's going to be a difference in a World Series crowd and a playoffs crowd.
- 15:44They're more excited here than they are in a World Series.
- 15:47They sort of sit on their hands a lot of times in the Janky Stadium World Series.
- 15:51They're different folks. I believe you're right about that.
- 15:55It's more of an extension of the regular season too.
- 15:58Here's the pitch. He takes a high curve.
- 16:0222 to count on Munson.
- 16:06Cowan's a set of fielders slightly over the left.
- 16:10Wofford fairly deep in left field on Thurman.
- 16:14Hasler looks him over, goes into action again.
- 16:16The pitch is high again. That's the fastball.
- 16:203-2 and Hasler wants another ball to work with.
- 16:24The Royals picked up three runs on three hits in the opening inning.
- 16:27Wofford to Wolford, a single by Brett.
- 16:29Got Wolford in after he stole second.
- 16:33Mayberry single, sent Brett to third.
- 16:36McRae knocked him in with a sacrifice five and Pochette doubled in Mayberry.
- 16:41Here's the windup, the full count pitch.
- 16:43He swings it back to right, going back, Pochette, he's there, he has it, and the inning is over.
- 16:49The Yankees with no runs.
- 16:52One hit, no errors, nobody left.
- 16:54And at the end of the first inning, Royals 3-7.
- 17:25When you say ball, one hit, no errors, nobody left.
- 17:29And at the end of the second inning, there's only one run by the Yankees.
- 17:35When you say ball, there's nothing that you can't do.
- 17:38When you say ball. When you say ball, you can run all the way.
- 17:43When you say ball, you're not alone.
- 17:46You're not alone.
- 17:48When you say ball, you can do it all.
- 17:51hello
- 17:59I don't believe testosterone
- 18:06The first inning here at Yankee Stadium tonight.
- 18:13Pockets, Martina, San Wilford, also will be the first three batters to face Doc Allen.
- 18:20The managers have not yet named their players for game four. They say they'll do it when this game is over,
- 18:25but speculation is it'll be Larry Gura, probably, for Kansas City.
- 18:29And if the Yankees are lose, they'll probably come back with Patrick Hunter.
- 18:33Should they win, Billy and Martin more than likely would use the Holtzman or Figueroa.
- 18:42Fifth Pockets at the plate.
- 18:44A little right hand batting shortstop facing Doc Allen.
- 18:47And it's a strike call.
- 18:51Fairly batting 286, that's two for seven in the series so far.
- 18:55A couple of ex-teammates against each other. They were both at Pittsburgh together.
- 19:02There's a strike, we got a quick slider over.
- 19:06Two strikes on Freddy Pockets.
- 19:13He stands fairly deep in the batter's boxThe outfield plays in the straightaway.
- 19:16The Yankee are back now. Fred takes the fastball very wide.
- 19:19Very wide.
- 19:22They're nothing royals. They got three in the opening inning.
- 19:25They're batting now in the secondThe Yankees started off as if they might do some damage.
- 19:29Single by Rivers, but then a strike out and he was cut down stealing.
- 19:31Bounding ball wide at first.
- 19:32Chambliss makes a good stop.
- 19:34Throw to Ellis covering and it is out of first base.
- 19:37Good play by Chambliss and Ellis combining.
- 19:40Chambliss had to go very wide, almost into the hole between first and second.
- 19:49Here's Buck Martinez on the right hand batting second.
- 19:54One down, nobody on second inning. Royals ahead, three nothing over the end.
- 19:58Martinez has one for six, but he has seven in two runs.
- 20:02He batted 148 against the Yankees during the regular campaign.
- 20:10Ellis has slowed up his pitching phase a little bit.
- 20:13He was working a lot quicker in the opening inning.
- 20:18Here's a tighter across, good pitch, strike called on Buck Martinez.
- 20:27One out, nobody on.
- 20:30Second is signed by Ellis. He delivers.
- 20:33There's a swing and a miss. That one about ladder high.
- 20:40Just about a capacity crowd here at the remodeled Yankee Stadium.
- 20:49Martinez waiting on the next delivery. Here it comes. He takes the strike.
- 20:53That one got the outside corner and he walks back to the bench to strike out victims.
- 20:58Two strikeouts for Doc Ellis.
- 21:02Here's Wolford who started the three run surge in the first of the day from ball.
- 21:09Seaboard coaches at first, for Kansas City.
- 21:15Chuck Hiller coaches at third. There's a bombing ball up the middle going for Stanley.
- 21:19Back of second he has it, throw to first, he's got it.
- 21:22Another good play by the Yankee infield and the Royals go down one, two, three.
- 21:28At the end of one and one half innings, Royals three Yankee snubbing.
- 21:34There I was, successful business man, wonderful family, nice home, no crabgrass.
- 21:39But I had to work for it all. I never actually won anything.
- 21:43Until I played budget rent-a-tie. I'd stand late to win two-thirds.
- 21:47Then the top of the line, I won. And you can see,
- 21:52we found every Yankee driver with five different prices.
- 22:00and he'll third iron-on. Look, there's no purchase necessary and the offer is fired November 30th.
- 22:05So unless it's prohibited in your area, play the I can't wait for your in-state today at
- 22:10participating budget locations. He has eight different winners.
- 22:13Right is my face and you're a winner. Three-state rules available at participating locations

- 22:21And right now at participating budget locations, you can rent a Chevrolet, a Prius, or a similar car
- 22:25for only $14.95 a day. 16 cents a mile plus gas.
- 22:29Be an ace's winner at budget rent-a-tie.
- 22:33Lou Penella coming about and getting his usual Lou green.
- 22:38Something that follows him wherever he goes.
- 22:43They're not going up and out of there pronouncing his first name.
- 22:48He thought of an extended fashion on how to have.
- 22:52So now I was two for five. That's about a mark of 400.
- 22:59And has not quite ready to deliver yet.
- 23:05Wally Moses told me that he accidentally received one of the greatest ovations ever accorded to play in this ballpark.
- 23:11He was a battered Yankee Stadium when it was announced over the PA that Mussolini had been overthrown.
- 23:15He's premier of Italy.
- 23:18That was a real deal.
- 23:22Here's Penella stepping in now.
- 23:25Royal Spring, New York nothing.
- 23:28And the fifth, Pasquale delivers. It's been close.
- 23:34Big, strong-looking left-hander, Andy Haspel.
- 23:37Started the year, you remember, with a California Angels.
- 23:43Here's the windup and Haspel delivers. There's a bounding ball over his glove.
- 23:47Potec comes up with it. Throw to Mayberry. Good play.
- 23:50Got him. Potec ranging wide to his left.
- 23:54And Ned Frank White almost had a shot at that ball too.
- 23:57It looked as though either one of them could have made the play, but it was easier for Potec.
- 24:00He was crossing to his left and he had the play in front of him in the bag in front of him and of course has a stronger arm.
- 24:07Here's Chris Chambers now. He's hit play for the last nine games of the regular season and the first two in this series.
- 24:13And he's the top hitter on this club in this series, 5.56.
- 24:175 for 9.
- 24:19Left hand about a waiting on Haspel.
- 24:21And he takes the fastball outside.
- 24:23Chambers also batted 383 against Kansas City 15 during the regular season.
- 24:28And a couple of home runs.
- 24:31Left hander against the left hander. One out. Royals lead 3-0 in the second.
- 24:35Here's the slider outside. Almost went for that one, but checked off.
- 24:43Brad White of the Tigers third.
- 24:45Chambers a close stance batter.
- 24:47Waiting on Haspel's two-0 pitch.
- 24:49Swing hard smash on the ground. A white at second. He has it. Throw to Mayberry.
- 24:53And they are two down.
- 24:55Let's pause ten seconds for station identification. This is the CBS Radio Network.
- 24:59With a 97-coin cash box sticker, you could win a set of keys or even money.
- 25:04But without this sticker, you get nothing.
- 25:07KOI and Portland.
- 25:11Along with Ned Martin, this is Ernie Harvada, Yankee Stadium.
- 25:14Three-nulling Royals, second inningThe Nettles get bat. Two out for the Yankees. Nobody on.
- 25:20Left hander batter takes a breaking pitch low.
- 25:24The home run champion of the American League, Greg Nettles, has one hit or double in seven turns at bat in the championship series.
- 25:35Takes the ball high to shoulder. Two-and-oh, the count on Greg.
- 25:44Hartrack has moved to his right side. Moving over toward the bag at second from the shortstop position.
- 25:51There's a low one outside. Three-and-oh on Nettles.
- 25:57Nettles had only one of his home runs against Kansas City.
- 26:01And he batted 143 against the Royals picking through the year.
- 26:07He takes a strike right through the heart of the plate above the knee. Three-and-one, the count on him.
- 26:13Royals lead the Yanks. Three-nulling. Yankees batting. Two out. None on. Second inning.
- 26:18There's a half-cut. Let's get the rulings. It is ball four. He walks in.
- 26:24Humphrey Maloney checking with the third base. Humphrey Larry McCoy. And he said he did not go across. It'll be a two-out walk.
- 26:31That's the first pitch in by Hartrack.
- 26:34And here is Elliot Maddox, the right-hand batting right fielder from the University of Michigan.
- 26:41Big 10 batting champion in his collegiate days.
- 26:45Maddox with one hit and four trips in the championship series.
- 26:51Nettles slightly to first base. Maddox backs away an inside fastball from Haslund.
- 26:56Three runs, three hits to the RoyalsThe Yanks have no runs on one hit.
- 27:00They've got an infield hit off Reuthers leading it off in the first inning.
- 27:04Haslund with a set position on the mound.
- 27:12In close, they're picking in close and low on Maddox.
- 27:17Against New York this year, Haslund didn't have any decisions.
- 27:23And he worked a total of 18 innings. He allowed 10 hits and two runs.
- 27:27One of them was earned.
- 27:30And his walk to strikeout ratio was good. He walked five and struck out 10.
- 27:39Now the little conference is over.
- 27:41Martinez down to give the sign, two-oh pitch to Maddox.
- 27:44He takes his strike. There he's got the breaking ball.
- 27:47Two and one, the count on Elliot Maddox.
- 27:50Maddox out about a year and a half with injuries.
- 27:54Our Nettles are trying to get a little longer lead at first base.
- 27:59It's a two-one pitch coming up.
- 28:02Maddox swings and hits one off his footThe ball bounds down toward Mayberry, South territory.
- 28:08Two-two, the count on Maddox.
- 28:14Maddox hit the old ballpark about fill now.
- 28:17I believe they finally did it.
- 28:19At first when we came on, there were a lot of blues going in those seats.
- 28:22But they've come close to capacity and probably will tomorrow too.
- 28:27And this more than likely now will be the biggest crowd of the year in the New Yankee Stadium.
- 28:34They drew over two million.
- 28:36They led the American League and paid attendance.
- 28:43The bench is trying to move Pochette over toward center field from right a little bit.
- 28:47Now Maddox swings and fouls it away.
- 28:49Pochette was hugging the line a little bit too much down in the right field corner.
- 28:55Riding her dog and killer and all of them were waving their captain arms.
- 29:00Planck may try to get Pochette to move over toward center field a little bit more.
- 29:04Still a two-two count on Maddox. Three nothing lawyers lead.
- 29:07Two outsThe Yankees have the Nettles at first base.
- 29:10The pitch is hung on and this is sucking off.
- 29:14And that's the tires the Yankees with no runs.
- 29:17No hits. They had a lot. No errors. One man left.
- 29:20And at the end of two innings, Kansas City three, New York nothing.
- 29:23Hey, let's go look for a new van this weekend.
- 29:26We've looked for a new van. You know that. There just aren't any vans around.
- 29:29But honey, I know Webster Wilford Ford out in Oregon City has some.
- 29:33We haven't looked there yet. And they not only have vans,
- 29:36they've also got pickups and four by fours and vans ready to be customized.
- 29:40Well, it's going to be the same old story we've heard everywhere else we've looked.
- 29:43We'll have to wait forever on delivery.
- 29:46So what's the rush about looking this weekend?
- 29:48Webster Wilford Ford has vans in stock right now.
- 29:51They're a small dealership, but that's where you get the best deal.
- 29:54From a little dealer that has a low overhead and a large inventory.
- 29:57All right. I'm convinced. But where is Webster Wilford Ford?
- 30:01Here in Oregon City at 11th and Main Street.
- 30:03I'm so excited. I've got the perfect van for us. I'll pick you out.
- 30:07Yeah, well that's just fine. You what?
- 30:10Uh oh. Well, I just happened to be driving by and I just...
- 30:14Webster Wilford Ford, now with a large selection of 76 vans in stock
- 30:18at 11th and Main Street in Oregon City.

- 30:48Rock Ellis on the mound for the Yanks now, 3-0, the Royals lead.
- 30:52Royals coming to bat in the first half of inning number three at Yankee Stadium.
- 30:56Game three of the American League Championship Series.
- 31:00The Yankees took the first one in Chatter City 4-1.
- 31:03The Royals came back on Sunday night tied with a 7-3 victory.
- 31:07Yesterday was an off day and action resumed here tonight in New York.
- 31:16First big championship game in Yankee Stadium since 1964.
- 31:21While here's Collins at the plate, he struck out his first trip against the Yankee right-hander Doc Ellis.
- 31:28There's a fastball in close around the knees.
- 31:32Collins has good all-around ball play and he's in center field because of the injury to Amos Odey.
- 31:38Here's the motion, the pick by Ellis, swing and a foul ball hit into the Royal dugout and it bounds out.
- 31:48Ellis a 1-0 against the Yankees this year.
- 31:55He won 17 in last state.
- 31:57Here's the pitch, he swings a bounding ball up the middle, a big hopper.
- 32:00Randolph deeped second, has it, throw to first.
- 32:02He is there in time and it's a base hit.
- 32:06Collins beat it out.
- 32:09Randolph did well just to get to that ball and then he couldn't get much on him.
- 32:13He was so deep back at second base.
- 32:15And when he hit for Collins, that is the fourth Royal hit.
- 32:23Here's George Fred who is eating up the Yankee picking in this series.
- 32:27He had a single and drove in the first run of the opening inning.
- 32:36He now has five for eight.
- 32:38That's 6.25.
- 32:42Man on first tower, he doesn't go.
- 32:45The pitch to Brett is a strike.
- 32:47And once again we see Rivers over to the left field side of Settick on George Brett.
- 32:52Brett is the dream of a batting coach.
- 32:55He does not try to put a home run every time.
- 32:58He'll go with a pitch, he won't try to pull everything.
- 33:01And he's got a good knowledge of the strike zone.
- 33:06Falls over to first but Collins is back with ease.
- 33:09Now the strike one pitch to George Brett.
- 33:11He takes the fastball outside, one and one.
- 33:18Mayberry waiting at the on deck.
- 33:20Mayberry waiting at the on deck circle.
- 33:27Ellis keeping a rather slow pace now.
- 33:31Royals lead the Yanks 3-0.
- 33:33We're in the third inning in New York.
- 33:35There's a pitch out but Collins is not moving.
- 33:412-1 they count on Brett.
- 33:45Brett stepping out looking down at third base coach Hiller.
- 33:48Brett batted 3-0-8 last season.
- 33:55Now the pitch is caught on and hits down to third base.
- 33:58It'll be foul.
- 34:00Brett got his chance back in 73 when Paul Shaw was put out of action.
- 34:05He came up and played his first major league baseball at that time.
- 34:09And went down later and came back to save.
- 34:12Some people say Ernie that they kind of look good to watch him pitch.
- 34:16Because he's ambidextrous.
- 34:18He can throw equally as well with the left hand as he can with the right.
- 34:22That would be fun.
- 34:242-2 to count on Brett.
- 34:26Ellis delivers.
- 34:28Here's a ball outside.
- 34:34Only one pitcher in major league history has ever done that in a competition.
- 34:38A fellow named Tony Malane.
- 34:40You broadcasted on his plane?
- 34:42Yeah, about 1890 I think it was.
- 34:44Here's the pitch. Runner goes. Bounding ball up the middle.
- 34:46Randolph has it in second.
- 34:48Touches the bag. Throw to first. Double play for the end.
- 34:50Oh, that ball was hit right in the right spot for New York.
- 34:53They had the hit and run on.
- 34:55Brett bounced one over the head of Ellis.
- 34:57Randolph breaking with the pitch.
- 34:59Moving over to his right toward second.
- 35:01Grabbed it. Touched the bag.
- 35:02And then he threw to first.
- 35:04And Brett was out by a good margin for the D.P.
- 35:10Now sometimes the hit and run will work for you then.
- 35:12And sometimes it will backfire just like that.
- 35:17This may bury the flake now.
- 35:21He had a single his first time up.
- 35:23There's a strike on the outside corner.
- 35:26Doc Ellis fed him a fast ball.
- 35:29Now this time Revers is playing him over in right center and very deep.
- 35:33The infield has shifted over on him too.
- 35:35There's a ball outside.
- 35:37Stanley is playing over on the right field side of second.
- 35:40Randolph is back in short right field.
- 35:42And Chambers near the line at deep first base.
- 35:45Only medals on the left side of the infield.
- 35:47Here's a bounding ball up the middle.
- 35:49Stanley grabs it back a second for the first.
- 35:51And the shift pays off for New York.
- 35:53A tricky hit away from Mayberry.
- 35:57No runs on one hit. No errors.
- 36:00Nobody left.
- 36:02And in the middle of the third, Royals 3-0.
- 36:05The final of the third, Royals 3-0.
- 36:35When you say bye, you tell the world you know what makes it all the way.
- 36:42When you say bye, you say you're carrying on.
- 36:46You only want the thing I feel.
- 36:49There is no other one.
- 36:51There's only something left.
- 36:54Because the thing I feel is leading on away.
- 36:58When you say bye, why the?
- 37:02You said it all.
- 37:04Here he comes, 의D.
- 37:11And the former Nashville legger, Winnie Randolph will lead off the New Yorkers.
- 37:14And the third, the Royals have a 3-0 lead over the Yankees.
- 37:17They've got all three of them.
- 37:18Doc Ellis in the opening inning.
- 37:20Fender Hassler ready to deal him in to Randolph...
- 37:23who is looking for his first hit in the championship series.
- 37:27He batted T96 against Kansas City during the regular season.
- 37:31Randolph and McRae are the only two regulars that would house his so far in the playoffs.
- 37:45Here's the right hand batting Randolph at the plate and half for the big strong looking left hander ready to go into action.
- 37:51Three nothing royal, yanked it back in the third.
- 37:54There's a strike, that's breaking down on the lander.

- 55:07Royals got three in the first.
- 55:13The Yanks just returned with two here in the fourth.
- 55:16It's a fastball outside.
- 55:19High and away to Greg Nettles, 2-2.
- 55:22Willie Martin leaning in front of the bug out.
- 55:27Put on the second step, watching the action.
- 55:30The 2-2 fifth.
- 55:31He took it low.
- 55:33That was a curve.
- 55:353-2, they count on Nettles.
- 55:43Now has to check his time with sector Martinez.
- 55:47Wind up the pitch on the way.
- 55:49Swing and a miss.
- 55:50He struck him out on a curve.
- 55:53God retired but the Yankees get two on the double by Pennella.
- 55:56The home run by Shambles.
- 55:58Two runs, two hits, no errors.
- 56:00Nobody left and at the end of the fourth inning,
- 56:02Royals three Yankees two.
- 56:05Now that you're about to buy a microwave oven,
- 56:07know the facts about teaching.
- 56:09These are the facts from the Amana Kuchmatic Radar Range,
- 56:12The first microwave oven with a memory.
- 56:15Set it and it remembers to defrost, cook and call you when dinner's ready.
- 56:19Freeze it to table one, two, three.
- 56:21Amana Kuchmatic Power Shift lets you select the cooking speed you need.
- 56:26Put you in full control of everything you cook.
- 56:28Amana's 675 watts of cooking power cooks almost everything in one-fourth
- 56:33The usual time and saves energy.
- 56:35Uses 50 to 75 percent less energy than a conventional electric range.
- 56:40The stainless steel interior is big enough to roast a family-sized turkey.
- 56:44The removable glass oven tray catches, fills and boil overs.
- 56:47All this plus Amana's full five-year warranty on the Magnitron.
- 56:51Covered Magnitron costs, labor charges, even the service man's travel expenses for five years.
- 56:57These are the facts.
- 56:59Amana believes once you know the facts, you'll buy an Amana Kuchmatic Radar Range.
- 57:03Simple as that.
- 57:07It's the first one now, Royals 3, Yankees 2.
- 57:10We go to the fifth inning of game number three in the American League Championship Series.
- 57:14This one at Yankee Stadium.
- 57:16The first here in New York after the two teams divided their first two games
- 57:21in Royals Stadium in Kansas City.
- 57:24Doc Ellis on the mound for the Yankees.
- 57:27And the hasler is the pitcher for Kansas City.
- 57:31And now Ellis getting ready to pitch to the Royals in the fifth inning.
- 57:34It'll be Freddy Potec that leads it off.
- 57:36Followed by the number nine batter, Buck Martinez.
- 57:39And then the leadoff man, Jim Wolford.
- 57:42Potec bounced out the first base his first time at bat.
- 57:47Samus made a good play going wide to his right over toward second base.
- 57:52And Ellis also made a good play combining with Samus as he raced for the mound to take the 12 from Chris.
- 58:01So here's the rubber shot top Potec who is spotful with the glove already.
- 58:06Now comes up with a bat.
- 58:09Ellis looking around at his infield alignment.
- 58:12Now he's ready for action. He pitches and Fred takes his sights.
- 58:23Now the floor of the game was all Kansas City for a while and now it seems to belong to the Yankees.
- 58:28Potec swings a bombing ball up the middle. It'll be through for a hit.
- 58:32Ellis made a method to grab that ball as it went by but he couldn't get it.
- 58:36And Potec is down with a single.
- 58:45In four to five innings the Royals have put their leadoff man on base against Doc Ellis.
- 58:50But only in one inning have they scored. They got all three of their runs in the first.
- 58:54Here's Buck Martinez who's took a called third strike.
- 58:57He has only dripped to the plate.
- 59:00Nattles is in close in case Martinez wants to bunt.
- 59:03Shambler's holding on the bag with Potec and there's a throw over there.
- 59:07Fred gets back safely.
- 59:10Excellent base runner, Freddy Potec.
- 59:15Shambler's trying to keep him close to the bag at first.
- 59:18One run lead for the Royals, three to two.
- 59:21It's a ball in too close on the catcher Martinez.
- 59:25It'll be followed by the leadoff man Wilford here in the Royal fifth inning.
- 59:32Candice Philly with three runs and five hits and no errors.
- 59:36And the Yankees have two runs, three hits and no errors.
- 59:39Now the set by Ellis, the right hander, pitches out but nothing happens.
- 59:43Potec's holding it first.
- 59:45Freddy had 51 steals in the regular season and they nipped him 15 times.
- 59:55Jacksson and Dick Sidrow throwing the Yankee ball in now.
- 59:58Left handed and the right handed.
- 1:00:00The first Potec is back easily.
- 1:00:04He and Odey are the only Royals who are allowed to go strictly on their own on a steal.
- 1:00:14He goes, a 50 is one on miss.
- 1:00:16Here's Munson's throw.
- 1:00:18He is out at second.
- 1:00:20And Potec doesn't believe it.
- 1:00:22He's putting up a big argument with Tronc.
- 1:00:24Stanley came across, took the throw.
- 1:00:27It was a high throw on the right field side.
- 1:00:29Freddy thought he'd split under it.
- 1:00:31But Odey, the second of ace on fire, signaled him out.
- 1:00:35And there'll be an argument out there.
- 1:00:36Why did his ball get gone out?
- 1:00:38Go have your two coaches.
- 1:00:40Close play, I think they're arguing that he had split past the tag and the tag never had been made.
- 1:00:46The throw was there and so was Freddy.
- 1:00:49And he was awfully mad for a moment and immediately Hiller came out to take the heat off Potec so he wouldn't be ejected from the game.
- 1:00:56You've got to do an awful lot of course to be ejected from a World Series.
- 1:01:00Freddy was not quite that skinny, but he had a few things to say to our French, the second base on fire.
- 1:01:07And that Jimmy Martin's gone out now and he's taken up an argument with Bill Haller exactly about what I couldn't say.
- 1:01:14I don't know either, Bill. You'd better stop it. These things are going your way right now.
- 1:01:24Anyway, Potec is out on the steal attempt.
- 1:01:28And a very tough argument out there around second base is over.
- 1:01:34But Martin continues his discussion with the first base on fire, Haller.
- 1:01:43He keeps pointing out towards second.
- 1:01:50And the argument continues down there just inside of first base.
- 1:01:55As of right now, I don't see any Royal runner down there, so Billy has had his say.
- 1:02:00Maybe he wants him to watch something about base running or somebody going out of the line or not.
- 1:02:04That project didn't go out of the line.
- 1:02:08Martinez at the plate and they count on him as two balls and one strike.
- 1:02:13The action resumes here, 3-2, the Royals in the lead.
- 1:02:16They're batting in the fifth inning against Doc Ellis.
- 1:02:18Bounding ball hit to Randolph. He has a nice, easy hop, throw to Chambliss, and there are two down.
- 1:02:24That's all he can show, Scott, in fourth time.
- 1:02:30That'll bring up the leadoff man, Jim Wolford.
- 1:02:34Jim has walked him short a run and bounced him shortstop.
- 1:02:36That gives him hope of one official in the night.
- 1:02:40He has one hit and eight turns so far in the series.
- 1:02:46Right-hander against the right-hander. He starts the run and takes the ball wide.
- 1:02:50Ball one.
- 1:02:553-2, Royals lead the game. We're in the fifth inning in New York.
- 1:03:00Tryck, Ellis at the outside corner. Ellis has settled down a little bit.
- 1:03:04He's had good defensive support tonight.
- 1:03:11Neither team has made an error so far.
- 1:03:14They cut in a miss on a knee-high pitch, and the doubt now is one ball and two strikes on Wolford.
- 1:03:24Now Cowan's right on deck for KC.
- 1:03:28Now the look of a sign for Ellis. Here's the windup on the pitch.
- 1:03:32He swings, fly ball, sort of feel. Rivers backing up. He's there. He has it.
- 1:03:36And the five retire.
- 1:03:40One run, one hit, no errors, and nobody left in the middle of the fifth inning.
- 1:03:45The score is Royals lead the Yankees 2.

- 1:04:46TBS Radio 4 is bringing you the play-by-play action in the American League Championship.
- 1:04:56And there's more to comeThe World Series starts October 16th.
- 1:05:00That's next Saturday, and you'll hear exclusive radio coverage play-by-play of the 1976 World Series
- 1:05:07right here on the TBS Radio Network station.
- 1:05:14Halfway through the game here at Yankee Stadium, we're going into the last half of the fifth inning,
- 1:05:18The Royals three runs five hits, no errors. New York two runs three hits, no errors.
- 1:05:23And it's my pleasure now to bring in my colleague, a longtime voice, to the Boston Red Sox, Ned Martin.
- 1:05:29Thank you, Ernie Hywell. And here we go in inning number five, bottom half.
- 1:05:34The Yankees trailing by a run. And you get the feeling it's somewhere along the line.
- 1:05:38This game is going to develop into a beauty because there is a tension.
- 1:05:42Each team has played well, has hit in timely back in time.
- 1:05:46There have been no errors. There's been one pass fall, but that didn't really figure any out there in runs.
- 1:05:51Elliot Maddux will lead it off. He struck out swinging to end the second inning.
- 1:05:55Andy Hassler's only real mistake was a ball out over the plate to Chris Shambler,
- 1:06:01who landed in the right center for a two-run homer.
- 1:06:04Right before that, the hit by Panella was a ball that just eluded George Brett at third.
- 1:06:09He went over to backhand it, flipped away from him, and then got involved in that ground rule double ruling.
- 1:06:17Maddux stands in, right-handed batter. Andy Hassler all set to pick to it.
- 1:06:26Left-hander kicks and throws and curves him down and in, ball one.
- 1:06:33Again, an appeal. More appeals toward the corner umpires tonight than there have been in the first couple of games on check-swing.
- 1:06:41A plate umpire will tell you that's probably his toughest call.
- 1:06:48Ground ball, shortstop way again. A busy Freddy Patek up and over in time.
- 1:06:54Maddux grounds to short. Freddy Patek continues to have heavy traffic down there at shortstop.
- 1:07:02Five assist for him and a putout.
- 1:07:06Charlie Randolph grounded to Patek in the third.
- 1:07:13Right-handed hitting the second baseman for the Yankees.
- 1:07:19The hit by Hassler and it's up high, ball one.
- 1:07:22Hassler can throw hard, features a fast ball that's...
- 1:07:26...sinked for the most part.
- 1:07:28Will run away from the right-handed batter and tries to keep it around the knees.
- 1:07:32But he's got good velocity on it, unlike a lot of sinker ball pitchers who just keep it there and change speed.
- 1:07:38The next pitch is high, ball two, and the count is two and over to Randolph.
- 1:07:42Hassler has a sinking fast ball and a slider.
- 1:07:482-0 pitch.
- 1:07:49Fast ball way outside to Randolph, ball three.
- 1:07:54So Willie has the count entirely his way, three balls, no strikes.
- 1:08:01Royals three, Yankees two, bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:08:05Hit it.
- 1:08:06Strike called right there.
- 1:08:11Randolph now checks off with third base coach Dick Hauser.
- 1:08:17Hitter take on three and one.
- 1:08:20One out.
- 1:08:21Hassler works inside ball four.
- 1:08:26Randolph on with a one-out walk and he represents the tying run.
- 1:08:31Bringing to the plate the number nine hitter, Mickey...
- 1:08:34...Fred Stanley.
- 1:08:37He's already in the flip sometime when he's confused that it's Mickey Stanley.
- 1:08:41The Evergreens, center fielder, infielder, whatever you want with the Dodgers.
- 1:08:46The veteran along with Fred Stanley, the Yankee shortstop.
- 1:08:50Fred pops up to Patek in the third.
- 1:08:55Big lead by Randolph.
- 1:08:57He shoots back to first on a throw over there.
- 1:09:04Willie Randolph can steal a base for you also.
- 1:09:12He gets back and another throw over there and Nelson Howard is claiming box.
- 1:09:17It is not ruled a box, but L.A. Howard immediately went up to Bill Haller and said,
- 1:09:21Hey, what about that move to first?
- 1:09:27But it was declared a legal throw over there and no motion toward the plate made.
- 1:09:31Here's the fifth to the plate.
- 1:09:33Strike called on Stanley.
- 1:09:35Shortened up on the bat and took a fastball inside corner.
- 1:09:41In the royal bullpen, their first action, left-hander Tom Hall and right-hander Marty Tappen.
- 1:09:50The count is all in one with Stanley.
- 1:09:54He backs out asking for time.
- 1:09:58Now sets himself.
- 1:10:03Randolph leads away from first, a four or five step lead.
- 1:10:06A curve ball, but a bad miss for a strike.
- 1:10:11They did call it a strike.
- 1:10:13They haven't put it on the board yet.
- 1:10:16Nope, he called the ball.
- 1:10:17One ball, one strike.
- 1:10:19One and one.
- 1:10:21It appears that the strike call had been given, but it's one ball, one strike now with one out.
- 1:10:32Barely seeing about advancing that run to second base or hitting behind the runner.
- 1:10:37Good lead by Randolph.
- 1:10:39Back he goes to first.
- 1:10:40Low throw dug out by Maybury.
- 1:10:45Tight ball game.
- 1:10:46He's trailing three-two as they bat in the fifth.
- 1:10:52Randolph goes into a good-sized lead at first base.
- 1:10:56Which is high and tight.
- 1:10:59Two and one.
- 1:11:03Depending on the runner, as a matter of some, runners like to take a lead like Randolph takes.
- 1:11:10Some get a better jump and will take only about a four-step lead.
- 1:11:14Some like Randolph take five-steps.
- 1:11:16Tommy Harper, who's a fine base dealer in the American League for years, likes a five-step lead.
- 1:11:23Others will get a walking start.
- 1:11:26Some like Lou Brock try to move the top part of their body.
- 1:11:30And that's what they call the jump instead of the feet.
- 1:11:34It's the lean.
- 1:11:36Here's the pitch.
- 1:11:38Inside, ball three.
- 1:11:43Time call by Maybury as he goes to the mound to talk to his sister, Hassler.
- 1:11:48Trying to settle Andy down now.
- 1:11:52There's one out in the Yankee fifth inning.
- 1:11:55Willie Randolph at first.
- 1:11:58The count is three and one to Stanley.
- 1:12:01And Dick Hauser, the third base coach, just had his word with Fred Stanley.
- 1:12:07Randolph had 37 stolen bases in the regular season.
- 1:12:13In the bunch toward first, it's foul, strike two, three and two.
- 1:12:18Stanley tried to push one down the first base line.
- 1:12:22Randolph was holding wide at first.
- 1:12:27So now a three and two count.
- 1:12:29We'll watch Randolph on this one with one out.
- 1:12:32Both teams now playing it close, tight, trying for inside baseball, getting a run.
- 1:12:39So one run ball game now, and the Yankees can play it differently.
- 1:12:43They needed the home runs from Shambler, first of all.
- 1:12:47Go to first.
- 1:12:49Randolph was dancing around out there at first.
- 1:12:51I don't believe at that particular time he had a notion of going.
- 1:12:54But he drew the throw over there.
- 1:12:58Three and two to Stanley.
- 1:13:02In field at double play depth around second.
- 1:13:04Hit, runner goes, fouled off.
- 1:13:07Randolph was on his way, but will have to come back.
- 1:13:10Three and two.
- 1:13:13And that moon, which is a waning moon, not a waxing moon,
- 1:13:16but a moon we saw with a left field fence in Kansas City over the right field fence, rather,
- 1:13:21is coming up over the left field fence here at Yankee Stadium.
- 1:13:28Over the river and over the drive.
- 1:13:31Three and two.
- 1:13:32Here goes Randolph, ground ball right side.
- 1:13:35Mayberry plays it alone, has to go to first, steps on the bag,
- 1:13:38and Randolph moves into scoring position.
- 1:13:44Stanley did his job well as far as hitting behind the runner,
- 1:13:47but big John Mayberry was right there to field it and prevented him from going into right field,
- 1:13:52which would put Randolph at third.
- 1:13:54So Randolph holds up at second base, and he is in scoring position with two outs.
- 1:13:59Then I was wandering over to the press box, and most of the people over there seemed to think the argument by Billy Martin
- 1:14:05might have been because the project threw his helmet when he got up and started the argument.
- 1:14:10Maybe Billy wanted to put out the game.
- 1:14:13Billy will press every advantage in a ball game.
- 1:14:17Pitches outside to Mickey Rivers, ball one.
- 1:14:21Rivers is one for two, had an infield hit, was short in the first inning,
- 1:14:25and thrown out trying to steal on a double play as it turned out when White struck out into a double play.
- 1:14:32Last time up, Mickey Mickey fouled out the third.
- 1:14:35The 1-0 pitch to him by Hassler, ground ball right side, taken by Frank White.
- 1:14:40Fires to Mayberry, that's all.
- 1:14:43Rivers grounds out second to first to end the fifth for New York.
- 1:14:47No runs, no hits, they leave one and threw five full innings.
- 1:14:51It's the Royal Three of the Yankees, too.

- 1:16:39The Royals coming up from the top of the sixth inning, leading the Yankees 3-2.
- 1:16:44They got their three runs right off the bat in the first inning off Doc Ellis.
- 1:16:48On a walk, a stolen base, a single, another single, a pass ball, a sacrifice fly, and a double.
- 1:16:55The Yankees came back later on in the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Chris Tamblitt,
- 1:17:00a pistol run of the playoff series.
- 1:17:05The National League Championship Series is all over.
- 1:17:09For the second straight year, the Reds sweep their opposition.
- 1:17:12They did it to Pittsburgh last year, they did it to Philadelphia this year.
- 1:17:15Today going up with three runs in the ninth inning to win 7-6.
- 1:17:20As Ernie said, our congratulations to Sparky Anderson and his Cincinnati Reds.
- 1:17:24Check swing by Al Cowans as they go into the top of the sixth, it's fouled off, let us strike one.
- 1:17:34Al FitzMorris, a right-hander, is throwing now in the bullpen for Kansas City.
- 1:17:40These fellows just haven't seen in ballgames yet.
- 1:17:43Short series and the starters have gone along except for Leonard. There's a foul tipped.
- 1:17:49Stepping into the Cowans, now struck out in the first and singled in the third.
- 1:17:57All the series so far, three for ten.
- 1:18:05Doc Ellers, settling nicely since the first inning.
- 1:18:08Cowans grounds one to the left side, stabbed by Nettles going to his left, falls down, gets up and throws him out.
- 1:18:16Nice play by Greg Nettles.
- 1:18:23He used to come hard with the brush of good hit no field, but he has fielded his position very well this year.
- 1:18:32He made a fine play that time, going far to his left, knocking the ball down, loving it rather, and then falling to his knees and writing himself to make the play.
- 1:18:40He's seen some good fielding plays in the infield by both sides and it's gained a nice.
- 1:18:45George Breda, singled home a run in the first, pitches down low to him, ball one, and he grounded into a double play on a hit and run in the third.
- 1:18:56Brett, five for nine on the series.
- 1:18:59There's a drive in the right field, a hit, a solid line drive, and he's two for three in this game.
- 1:19:05Now, six for ten. He continues to wail away at Yankee pitchers.
- 1:19:11Hitting them about as effectively as Philadelphia's Jay Johnstone did against Cincinnati.
- 1:19:16He went seven for nine against Reds pitching in their series, National League, but it didn't do any good at all.
- 1:19:23Brett has six hits in the series and so does Sambler for the Yankees.
- 1:19:28A lead in hit production.
- 1:19:31John Mayberry is one for two. He's singled and grounded out.
- 1:19:35By Ellis. Ground ball to first.
- 1:19:40Sambler steps on the bag, throws the first, a run down, back to his first base, tagged by Randolph.
- 1:19:46Three to six to four.
- 1:19:50Three to six to three to four is the way the run down went, and it turns out to be the double play because Sambler took off the fourth.
- 1:19:59And it had to go three to six to four with Willie Randolph making the play to put him out. So it's a double play ending the inning.
- 1:20:06No runs, one hit, and nobody left.
- 1:20:09And at the middle of the sixth inning, the score remains.
- 1:20:12Kansas City three, New York two.
- 1:20:15Don't know why you find someone you know for two. That's someone you can't talk to. Don't know why you find someone who cares about you. Someone you can't talk to.
- 1:20:35For life and health insurance, at which your individual needs first, talk to your life underwriter. In a trice, personal service, and that special expertise in making the future secure. Your life underwriter. Only a phone call away.
- 1:20:50We all need someone to talk to. Someone who will argue. Don't make those people do. Your life underwriter.
- 1:21:05There are many, many celebrities here tonight. Big people. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
- 1:21:24Lowell Thomas is here to watch the series.
- 1:21:28This game and my man, Frank Sinatra. He's here tooThe chairman.
- 1:21:37And they're seeing quite a ballgame as the Royals lead the Yankees three to two with the Yankees coming to bat in inning number six.
- 1:21:45A game that is very important to both clubs. I would think especially so to the Kansas City Royals because they know that tomorrow afternoon, win or lose tonight, they are going to face Catfish Center again.
- 1:22:00Roy White has struck out into a double play and grounded the short. Freddie Potek has made some outstanding plays in short. Meadow just made one a third. A good run down on the double play ball that just took the Royals out of the inning.
- 1:22:19And they're playing it on God's grass here.
- 1:22:22They do like is outside and high ball one.
- 1:22:30On the third.
- 1:22:34Teddy Teddy ball player for the Yankees through the years.
- 1:22:38Take that outside ball too.
- 1:22:53Playing him about straight away with the center fielder out.
- 1:22:57Left center.
- 1:23:10We mentioned before during this period a better left handed hitter than right.
- 1:23:14But one of his big hits in this set was the opening day double the game for the Yankees off Larry Gura.
- 1:23:24The ball low.
- 1:23:27There's a careful at all by Maloney.
- 1:23:30It's three and one now to fight.
- 1:23:34Various and sundry people have been up in the Royals bullpen mostly just get them work.
- 1:23:39Just a person like that.
- 1:23:43The left field line over for it.
- 1:23:55This is a CDS radio network.
- 1:24:10The Yankees stadium with the Kansas City Royals leading the New York Yankees 3 to 2 the Yankees batting in the sixth inning.
- 1:24:19White Munson and Pennella up against Andy Hasler.
- 1:24:23Hasler has given up only three hits.
- 1:24:25So one of them that big blast by family.
- 1:24:28The homer with Pennella aboard.
- 1:24:31All came with two out.
- 1:24:33The White ball for right leads with a walk in the sixth.
- 1:24:42Second walk on Hasler tying run at first and a big man coming up.
- 1:24:47Herman Munson.
- 1:24:49Munson has gone three for twelve in a series.
- 1:24:52Tonight he is lined up the right field and grounded the short.
- 1:25:00Now Patek and White confer around second base as to the matter of coverage in the event of a ground ball.
- 1:25:07Or an attempted move toward second by Roy White.
- 1:25:15Munson getting set.
- 1:25:18Now Tommy Hall and Marty Patton get up again to throw in the bullpen for the Royals.
- 1:25:22Left and right handed.
- 1:25:25Munson has gone through with the Blutens at home plate and here's the pitch.
- 1:25:29Five on the right field is going to be trouble.
- 1:25:31It's going to be up against the wall on one hop.
- 1:25:34White is coming around and being held at third.
- 1:25:37Double for Munson. Two on, nobody out.
- 1:25:53Herman Munson has gone to the opposite field with a long drive that took one hop on the dirt out there and banged against the wall.
- 1:26:02Dick Hauser, the third base coach with nobody out playing it very safely, held the runner, Roy White, not wanting to run into an out at home plate and spoil a potentially big inning.
- 1:26:14The runners are at second and third and Whitey Herzog is coming out.
- 1:26:19He is not sending Galen Cisco this time, his pitching coach.
- 1:26:23He's looking out for the bullpen.
- 1:26:25Hall and Patton have just gotten up to throw and Whitey would like to buy some time if indeed he doesn't make the move.
- 1:26:31He's going to call to the bullpen for the right hander.
- 1:26:34Marty Patton, the bulldog right hander, is going to come into this ball game right now with Lou Pennella, the designated hitter, scheduled up.
- 1:26:42Now we'll see if Billy Martin changes around to his left-handed hitters, something he did not do with his right-handed hitters in Kansas City.
- 1:26:52So Andy Hassler leaves the ball game. He went strong really by the names but gave up a walk and a double here and so goes five close innings, going to two men, facing two men here in the sixth inning.
- 1:27:09He has given up four hits and two runs, responsible for a couple of runners, walked through and struck out two.
- 1:27:16New picture coming on and right now for a brief news update, we return you to CBS News in New York.
- 1:27:23I'm Rita Sands reporting on the CBS Radio Network.
- 1:27:27Auto workers have ratified a proposed settlement with a Ford Motor Company.
- 1:27:31Production at some plants could resume as early as tomorrow.
- 1:27:35Self-officials in at least a dozen states are either holding up their swine flu inoculation programs or altering them because of the deaths of three elderly people in Pennsylvania who died just hours after taking the vaccine.
- 1:27:48Self-officials say there is no evidence that the vaccine contributed to the deaths. Investigations are underway.
- 1:27:54President Ford told ethnic leaders in Washington today he did make a mistake characterizing Eastern Europe as free of Soviet domination. A resident sent arrested today campaigning in New York. Jimmy Carter rested in Georgia.
- 1:28:07China has confirmed the appointment of Lao Tse-Tung as the new chairman of China's Communist Party, including the late Mao Tse-Tung.
- 1:28:14Japanese news correspondents today report the arrest of more than 30 Chinese leaders, including Mao Tse-Tung's widow. There has been no official confirmation.
- 1:28:23I'm Linda Sahan, PBS News New York.
- 1:28:26Back at Yankee Stadium, this is Ned Martin with Ernie HarwellThe Yankees have a threat going here in the sixth inning. Kansas City leads by a score of 3-2.
- 1:28:35The Yankees have Roy White at third and Thurman Munson at second with nobody out.
- 1:28:39Carlos May is going to back so Billy Martin is making his move.
- 1:28:43He will back for Panella and Marty Patson is taking his warm-up, Ernie.
- 1:28:47Well, Marty, the 33-year-old veteran, probably the talkie right-hand pitcher, is the regular season record. He had a earned run average of 2.49.
- 1:29:00He won eight games and lost 14, and he had 15 starts. So he has been used both as a reliever and a dirty pitcher.
- 1:29:11He's taking his tune-up crosses right now. Billy Martin, meanwhile, has come out to speak with his third base coach, Dick Houser.
- 1:29:18The Yankees with a big threat, they go by a run, 3-2. They've got a man at second, they have a man at third, and there's nobody out.
- 1:29:28And Carlos May has been inserted now as a pitch batter for Luke Panella. So Martin gets the left-hand batter up against the right-hander Marty Patson.
- 1:29:38And let's go back to Ned Martin. Okay, a big spot right here for Carlos May, who's become the designated hitter and locked into that spot.
- 1:29:46And they're going to put him on. They're not going to mess with him. They will walk in intentionally below the bases and set up a fourth and or double play situation.
- 1:29:56Marty Herzog will not pick to May a tough left-handed hitter in a spot like this.
- 1:30:02Carlos has been in this series now. He came into it with two hits and five times at bat.
- 1:30:10And they are putting him on, so the intentional walk will be given right away.
- 1:30:15Some people say, why bring in a pitcher to do that? One reason is that it gives him a little bit more time on the mound in the game situation, getting himself into a rhythm there.
- 1:30:26Mark Lattell has joined Tom Hall in the bullpen now for the Royals. And now, let's see, here comes Whitey again.
- 1:30:35Herzog is moving with Chris Samworth up there, and they won't tell me Hall right this moment.
- 1:30:42Marty Patson has been the long and short-release man, a spot starter, and actually during September, when the Royals were really having their troubles, he was about their most effective pitcher.
- 1:30:53But his job tonight is done, and he will lead in favor of Tom Hall, a left-hander who has been in postseason play and World Series before.
- 1:31:04So, Carlos May, the now designated hitter, gets the intentional walk. They've loaded the bases, and Marty Patson has a rather peculiar tour of duty here this night.
- 1:31:17Comes in with his four intentional pitches outside the strike zone and then goes to the dugout.
- 1:31:24So, actually, Patson will not be a very part of an inning, although, should May score, his run would be charged to Patson.
- 1:31:34So now, Tommy Hall is coming in, left-hander, he will pitch when he gets ready to Chris Samworth and Greg Middell.
- 1:31:43Tom Hall has won one and lost one so far in the regular season, and he made 31 appearances.
- 1:31:50They were all in relief, and he had one save. He's the former Minnesota twin and Cincinnati Reds pitcher.
- 1:31:57Taking over now for Marty Patson, who came in and gave up the intentional walk and then leaves the contest.
- 1:32:05You're tuned to your CBS Radio Network station for game number three in the American League playoffs. That means you're tuned to the only radio spot for the World Series.
- 1:32:15Starting Saturday, October the 16th, CBS Radio Sports brings you exclusive radio play-by-play coverage.
- 1:32:24Follow the series on radio right here.
- 1:32:31If ever anybody had a job to do, it's this thin left-hander, Tom Hall, now. He's coming into a bases-loaded, no-out situation.
- 1:32:43And some of the folks here in New York, Bowingson, he was a one-time Mets pitcher in addition to the other clubs that we mentioned.
- 1:32:52And that little con-pav at the mound, and my penis out there to talk to Hall, and he'll take you soon enough to like him.
- 1:32:58This afternoon, the Cincinnati Reds completed a three-game suite of the National League Championship series,
- 1:33:05going three runs in the ninth inning, the beat the Fulbright's to the league 76.
- 1:33:10Cincinnati had won the two earlier games by scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
- 1:33:16So now they'll wait to see who wins the playoffs here in the American League, and then the World Series will get underway as we mentioned on Saturday afternoon in Cincinnati.
- 1:33:26Bases loaded, it'll happen this way, White, he'll walk to opening inning.
- 1:33:30And Munson's life will double down the right field line. It looks for a moment as if White might be able to score.
- 1:33:35Those kids played the ball pretty well off the wall, and Hell White at third base.
- 1:33:39Munson cruising easily into second for the second double of the series.
- 1:33:43And then May was inserted as a pinch hitter for the designated batter, the right-hand hitting Lucenella.
- 1:33:50May, the left-hand batter, was lost.
- 1:33:52And now that brings up the man who has produced the two Yankee runs, Chris Kamlitz.
- 1:33:57With the bases loaded, nobody out and his net again.
- 1:34:01Tommy Hall worked with the Mets last year, won four and lost three.
- 1:34:05He has had this championship playoff experience though.
- 1:34:09He was with the Minnesota Twins in the 69 playoff, with the Minnesota Twins in 70 also, where he got in a couple of ball games, and with Cincinnati in 72 and 73.
- 1:34:20Now he faces the rough tough Chris Kamlitz with the bases loaded and nobody out.
- 1:34:25Yankee's frail by a run.
- 1:34:30Here it is. Kamlitz takes the breaking ball for a strike.
- 1:34:36What they try to do is jam Chris Kamlitz with hard stuff up and in, and then try to back him off the plate a little bit, and then throw him breaking the stuff away,
- 1:34:45which is a normal kind of playoff, but you try to get him more back in motion, to really jam him hard, or curve him a lot.
- 1:34:55There's a foul ball out of play down the third base line, and now quickly Tommy Hall is ahead of Kamlitz, 0-2.
- 1:35:02Another left-handed hitter, Greg Nettles, is on deck.
- 1:35:09Big crowd eating this one up right now.
- 1:35:11The Yankees have come from a 3-0 deficit to trail 3-2 and have all those people on base.
- 1:35:19Paul the flim left-hander from North Carolina, whines and throws, waste the fastball outside.
- 1:35:29When he first came up into the major, he could throw very hard, using whip-like arms.
- 1:35:35He's been primarily a relief pitcher in his career.
- 1:35:40One ball, two strikes.
- 1:35:44Infield pokes behind him, they're a double play depth around second base.
- 1:35:48One-two pitch, bouncing ball to second, this will score a run.
- 1:35:51Let's throw to second base, that's all it can get, one out, and it's tied up 3-3.
- 1:35:58White scores, Kamlitz gets his third RBI.
- 1:36:04In front of his second base, Carlos May was fourth, the only player they had, White to Potec, 4-6.
- 1:36:10The ball was not hit sharply enough to turn the double play.
- 1:36:14So Roy White scores a tying run.
- 1:36:17Munson moves in the third base, save at first on a fielder's choice, is Kamlitz.
- 1:36:22There is one out now with runners at the corners and Greg Nettles up.
- 1:36:27Duk Martinez, motioning to John Mayberry, about playing with Nettles there, a pull hitter, an uppercut hitter.
- 1:36:39Nettles has walked and struck out.
- 1:36:44Andy Hassler has gone, that run is charged to him, the one that just scored.
- 1:36:49He's also responsible for Munson at third.
- 1:36:55The other Royals really want to turn the double play.
- 1:36:58Ball works for Nettles, it's high and outside, ball one.
- 1:37:16Ben Gori throwing in the bullpen, Lattell has been out there with him, butt swinging, and the count evens up one and one to Nettles.
- 1:37:27Left-hander Steve Menjoy is the primary left-hander in the bullpen for Whitey Herzog, and the hard-throwing youngster Mark Lattell.
- 1:37:38One and one to Nettles.
- 1:37:44Munson off first, Munson off third, sweet three.
- 1:37:47It is.
- 1:37:48Line drive to center field, and it is in there for a base hit.
- 1:37:53Here comes Munson with a go-ahead run, runners at first and second on the Yankees lead, 4-3.
- 1:38:10Mike Nettles slamming one that hit right in front of center fielder Al Collins.
- 1:38:15For a moment it appeared that Collins would catch the ball, but he held up, and the ball dropped right in front of him for a clean single.
- 1:38:22Goering Munson and sending Shambliss to second, and now Whitey Herzog is out again.
- 1:38:27He wants the other left-hander, Menjoy, right now.
- 1:38:31He does not want the right-hander to face Elliott Manick, he wants Menjoy.
- 1:38:37So Tommy Hall faces two batters in his fifth, gets one of them out, a run of score that is not charged to him.
- 1:38:48Pitches to two batters and gives up one hit.
- 1:38:51He is responsible for a base runner.
- 1:38:55The two runs that have scored are charged to Andy Hasler, who is complete record now, 5-6, gave up four hits and four runs.
- 1:39:03The Yankees have gone ahead for the first time in this ball game and are still fussing around with runners at first and second and only a couple of one outs.
- 1:39:12And Manick, Randolph, and Stanley scheduled up.
- 1:39:15Though it's still not over, as Whitey Herzog has seen a free run lead put it away, and the Yankees playing like the Yankees they have all year long are in command at this point.
- 1:39:25It's the sixth inning with the Yankees leading the Royals 4-3.
- 1:39:30I want to remind you that tomorrow on CBS Radio, game number four will be broadcast right here on your CBS station, the Yankees versus the Royals.
- 1:39:38Airtime will be seven minutes past three o'clock, 3.07 Eastern Daylight Time and 2.07 Central.
- 1:39:46That's tomorrow at 3.07 Eastern and 2.07 Central for game four on the CBS Radio Network.
- 1:39:54And also, don't forget that starting next Saturday, October 16th, you'll hear the World Series action exclusive radio play-by-play right here on this PBS Radio Network station.
- 1:40:04So, Hansler has gone, Patsy has gone, Hall has gone, and Steve Mingare is on for his second appearance in the playoffs series to face Elliot Manick when he does come up.
- 1:40:18Mingare during the regular season then had a 5-5 record. All his appearances were in relief. He was in the 55 games and he came up with 10 saves.
- 1:40:18After which Monson's single, a Sam
- 1:40:27His only appearance in this series, the one you mentioned, came in the second game when he released Swidow in the ninth inning.
- 1:40:48He got the final batter made on a strikeout and picked up a save in the Kansas City victory in game number two of the series, a victory for the Royals that evened it at that point one and one.
- 1:41:04The Royals were out in front early in this game. They got three in the opening inningThe Yankees came back with two on a home run by Shambler from the fourth.
- 1:41:12And they picked up another pair here in the sixth inning and they are still alive with one out and two men on.
- 1:41:21And Steve Mingare takes over.
- 1:41:24We've seen in this series a show that can come back from a definiteThe Yankees, of course, were out in front all the way during the first game.
- 1:41:35The Royals came back to win it in the second, although the Yankees had come back to go ahead. And the Royals had a strong three nothing lead with Hasler looking good, but that's all gone.
- 1:41:46Elliott Maddox has struck out and grounded a short.
- 1:41:49It's hit by Mingare, a ball outside.
- 1:41:54Mingare, a smaller swept bender, with good breaking stuff, keeps the ball down.
- 1:42:01And now the slider and the sinker.
- 1:42:05Check on left-handed hitters.
- 1:42:10Right now, picking the right-handed batter, Elliott Maddox.
- 1:42:13This ball, the sinker ball, will tail away from the right-hander. There's one outside, ball two.
- 1:42:20So it's two and nothing to Maddox.
- 1:42:25And the winning drawing here with three, four pitchers having worked here in this inning.
- 1:42:32Two only, five batters. Now six. Six batters, four pitchers.
- 1:42:40Talk about the wheels spinning in the dugout.
- 1:42:44Here's a set by Mingare, and set one is called.
- 1:42:48It comes in across that inside corner.
- 1:42:51It's two and one to Maddox.
- 1:42:54One thing among several that went wrong with the Philadelphia Phillies and their national display-off losses
- 1:42:59was a failure of the bullpen to respond, a bullpen that had worked so hard all year.
- 1:43:04See how Kansas City does now. Curve is outside, ball three.
- 1:43:12Three balls, one strike for Maddox.
- 1:43:24At second base, Chris Gambler. At first, Greg Nettles.
- 1:43:31Three-one-six, rides in and has popped up down the right field line, curving foul, and is going to be out of play.
- 1:43:38Long strikes in the towers, three and two.
- 1:43:42Full through Maddox with Randolph on deck.
- 1:43:49Right-lead the inning with a walk, went to third on Munson's off-field double.
- 1:43:54That exited Andy Hasler. Marty Patliss brought in the pinch.
- 1:43:57Six to Carlos May, who was batting for Panella in the D.H. spot, walked in intensely, then left the game.
- 1:44:04Tommy Hall works with Sam Wood, got a field of choice and a run scored.
- 1:44:07He got the single and Nettles, and now it is Mingori, three and two, to Maddox.
- 1:44:12Here it comes.
- 1:44:14Fly ball in the right center, in the gap, they hit.
- 1:44:17Coming out there by Callan. A run will scoreThe throw comes in to White.
- 1:44:21Runners at second and third is five-three, New York.
- 1:44:35A double into the right center field alley by Elliott Maddox.
- 1:44:39Scoring, Sam Wood, and sending Nettles to third, and the Yankees are running wild here.
- 1:44:46And again, from the dugout, comes manager Whitey Herzog.
- 1:44:49He is down to about his last man out there, except for Doug Bird.
- 1:44:53He's going to bring Mark Lattell in while this game is still close.
- 1:44:57The bullpen has not worked for him.
- 1:45:00The bullpen, which had been effective throughout the year with fellows like Patton, Hall, Mingori, Lattell, so far has fallen down tonight.
- 1:45:10So, Mingori, which is no part of an inning, gives up one hit, is responsible for a run.
- 1:45:17The run that's scored by Sam Wood is charged to Marty Patton.
- 1:45:21So, Patton, which is no part of an inning, gave up no hits, one run, one walk.
- 1:45:27And anything that's left now is charged to Hall and Mingori.
- 1:45:32So, Steve Mingori, facing the right-handed batter, gives a bank hit to the right center field.
- 1:45:38And we'll see in the morning, Ernie, or after the game, whether the people who like to second-guess these things and look at it in hindsight will say,
- 1:45:47why did they bring Mingori, a left-hander, in, if they tell Elliott Maddox, the right-hander, unless they fear that maybe a left-handed batter will be installed by Billy Marcus.
- 1:45:54Well, there'll be plenty of time for that, and I'm sure a lot of colors and ladies here will take a panic of the old American pastime to right-the-second-guess.
- 1:46:05Here's the country-lotel, as they're calling, big right-hander coming into play, L-I-T-T-E-Double-L.
- 1:46:11He won eight and lost four in the regular season, and had 60 appearances, and all of those were in relief except one time he started.
- 1:46:24The town had 16 saves through his credit throughout the 1976 season.
- 1:46:31And now they have a little conference coming on for you, Paul.
- 1:46:35And we're getting a practice of big-legged, and I can't tell you that. He picked the one batter that went on in Norwich, and he's on the walk.
- 1:46:42The runs going in, and Hattler, Patton and the thick-finning, all here in the thick-finning.
- 1:46:50Mingori in the thick-finning, and now L-I-T-E-L, they make a hard-throwing right-hander in the thick-finning.
- 1:46:57Not too many left out there now in the royal bullpen, and as far as he heard, the royal manager starts to spin the Yankee tide here.
- 1:47:06He picked up three runs to pick the lead, and he survived the three.
- 1:47:09The total's right now, he's seen the thick-finsThe Yankees, five runs, thick-fins, no errors.
- 1:47:13The Royals had three runs, thick-fins, and no errors.
- 1:47:17Doc Ellis, incidentally, has gone all the way for the Yankees, and he's settled down after a thick-fins first-finning.
- 1:47:23Looks like he might not survive that opening inning when the Royals picked up three runs on three hits.
- 1:47:28Then he's allowed only three singles since then, and he's been hated by two Yankee double plays since that first inning.
- 1:47:35Well, the Yankees riding high now. They've got a two-run lead. Let's go back to the end.
- 1:47:40All right, it'll be Willie Randolph up. Randolph has rounded it short and walked.
- 1:47:45Still only one out. That was on a fourth out.
- 1:47:49Ramblers forcing May at second base, and on that even, a run short.
- 1:47:54Now the Royals will bring their infield in. They have to. They don't want any more runs possible to cross.
- 1:48:00Keep it on a two-run basis, but right now the Yankees are in the seat. They are driving.
- 1:48:06Infield in all the way around. Pottsack two steps off the grass. Everybody right out the edge of the grass.
- 1:48:12Pitch to Randolph. Fastball strikes off. Patel can hum it. He is maybe as fast a right-handed relief pitcher as there is in the American League.
- 1:48:25More than Missouri.
- 1:48:33Here's the studies working from a stretch with runners at second and third.
- 1:48:37Pitching. Inside fastball. Ball one. One ball, one strike.
- 1:48:42Now this is a kind of spot where Billy Martin likes to use the old squeeze once in a while. I'm sure that the Royals will be looking out for it.
- 1:48:50Well, think about it. They really have it somewhat in their favor because they are drawing in.
- 1:48:56To the point they're not beaten. But Martin does a lot of things.
- 1:49:03One ball, one strike. Here's a step by Patel.
- 1:49:08Drops to the belt. There's a squeeze. A sense it fouls.
- 1:49:14Well, they tried itThe infielders were looking for it a little bit because they had Brett charging from third, Mayberry from first.
- 1:49:22They had the pitchers coming straight in, Patel. And they had Freddy Pottsack trailing the play and covering third.
- 1:49:29But it didn't work and now the count is one ball, two strikes. So Randolph didn't get the bunt down.
- 1:49:35And we'll see what the league's like now.
- 1:49:38Mainly the All-American expedient of getting a two-base hit with the two or both runs.
- 1:49:48Al Fitzmarsh gets up the throw and a royal bullpen. Fitzmarsh is out there. So is Doug Byrd.
- 1:49:56Yankees lead 5-3, batting in the sixth inning. It's been a long one. Here it is.
- 1:50:03And they took this foul on a checked swing by Randolph.
- 1:50:06He was in on it and just picked this bat and got away from Martinez.
- 1:50:10Count one ball, two strikes.
- 1:50:13With all of this, there have been just two hits, there's been three hits this inning, a double by Munson, a single by Nettles, a double by Maddox.
- 1:50:20There have been two walks, one intentional.
- 1:50:27Now we're ready again as Latel looks to third.
- 1:50:30So the plate strikes three, swinging a slider.
- 1:50:34Latel has a good hard slider and he used it that time to strike Randolph out.
- 1:50:38So the youngster comes on and fans his first batter and now here is Stanley.
- 1:50:43Fred Stanley is 0-2.
- 1:50:51Stanley pops the shortstop and grounded the first. Martinez is out talking to Latel.
- 1:50:57One thing that you don't do is let down on the number nine hitter. There's a fellow like Stanley, which some clubs have.
- 1:51:03And he hurts it. He is 4-9 at this point in this series.
- 1:51:08That's three hits in one game. They don't play in the bowl.
- 1:51:13Cowens is over toward right center.
- 1:51:17Low outfield is pushed around to right. They get in the left field line.
- 1:51:22But Betts banned the pitch to him.
- 1:51:25Slider away, ball one.
- 1:51:28Jackies lead by two. They've scored three runs in this sixth inning.
- 1:51:32They've got their other two in the fourth. On campus there's two run homers.
- 1:51:35The Royals picked up three on the top of the first inning right off the bat off Doc Ellis.
- 1:51:39But Ellis has stepped it out since.
- 1:51:43Hitter.
- 1:51:45By a fastball you could hear that one pop into the glove of Martinez, but it was out of the strike zone.
- 1:51:50Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:51:58Two on that thinking Stanley. Mickey Rivers on Betts.
- 1:52:06There's the fetch.
- 1:52:09And the pitch. Ball three. Almost hit him.
- 1:52:14One thing that you would think the Mattel would not want to do is walk the number nine hitter
- 1:52:20and bring up Rivers, the left-handed batter who can kill you in a lot of ways.
- 1:52:24Now it would bring up Mickey with the bases loaded.
- 1:52:28If you win one pitch you're doing that.
- 1:52:31Three and nothing to Stanley.
- 1:52:36There it is.
- 1:52:38Betts called, three and one.
- 1:52:40Now Fred Betts with Hauser at third.
- 1:52:45He wants him to take another one.
- 1:52:48Or go for it if it's right around the wheelhouse somewhere.
- 1:52:53One balls, one strike.
- 1:52:57Schambler for third base.
- 1:53:00Or Nettles for third rather.
- 1:53:01And Nettles at second.
- 1:53:04Here is the three-one pitch. That is ball four.
- 1:53:06Bases loaded.
- 1:53:10Mattel walks Stanley.
- 1:53:14He's at first.
- 1:53:15Nettles at third.
- 1:53:17And the ninth man of the inning coming up, Mickey Rivers.
- 1:53:22Rivers has had one hit in three trips.
- 1:53:24An infield single and a third.
- 1:53:27Well the infield moves back now.
- 1:53:31Not even worrying about anybody except Rivers himself.
- 1:53:34They don't move back deep.
- 1:53:35They shorten up a little bit at short and second because of Mickey's speed.
- 1:53:40But there is a play at any base.
- 1:53:42So they don't necessarily have to go for him.
- 1:53:45And he shortens up and takes high and he's trying for a ball.
- 1:53:51Galen Cisco, the pitching coach now is sent out by Whitey Herzog.
- 1:53:55He talks to his pitcher and is trying to calm the youngster down.
- 1:54:01Mattel is just 23 years old.
- 1:54:07And a sort of situation like this, probably is adrenaline is really running.
- 1:54:15That might run the ball out of the strike zone a lot.
- 1:54:17He's showing very hard but missing high, wild high.
- 1:54:21Last year he won one and lost two in brief activity for Kansas City after spending a year in Omaha.
- 1:54:28Cisco and George Brett and Buck Martinez are all out there talking to Mattel.
- 1:54:34And now they leave simply.
- 1:54:36Catch him on the tailgate and runs back toward the dugout.
- 1:54:48It was about as welcome as a bough of electric eels to a pitcher in this situation.
- 1:54:56There it is.
- 1:54:58Buck's called.
- 1:54:59Rivers just kind of floating the bat back and forth in pendulum style.
- 1:55:03He's fishing on that one all the way.
- 1:55:05One ball, one strike.
- 1:55:08Rivers, as we've mentioned, does not often walk.
- 1:55:11He did Sunday once and surprised everybody.
- 1:55:15There's a fish.
- 1:55:16Strike swinging.
- 1:55:18The challenge by a fastball from Mark Littell.
- 1:55:22The doubt is now one and two to Rivers.
- 1:55:34One ball, two strikes.
- 1:55:38Here's the set.
- 1:55:40Fly ball, back of shortstop, back of third.
- 1:55:43Over for Potts Hatchey.
- 1:55:44He's got it in fairground to end the inning.
- 1:55:47So it mercifully ends for the Kansas City Royals in the sixth inning.
- 1:55:51As nine men come to bat for New York, they score three runs on three hits.
- 1:55:56There were no errors and three were left.
- 1:55:59And the score at the end of sixth is Yappie five, Royals three.
- 1:56:04There I was, successful business man, wonderful family, nice home, no crabgrass.
- 1:56:09But I had to work for it all.

- 1:57:09The Royals three runs and six-pitch.
- 1:57:11Doc Ellis, the beneficiary of all these riches, is now taking his warm-up,
- 1:57:16ready to pitch to Hal McCray, Tom Pochette, and Frank White.
- 1:57:19Doc, which are very shaky in the first inning, gave up the three runs.
- 1:57:24He got the side in order in the second.
- 1:57:26Pitched to only three men in the third, hated by a double play ball.
- 1:57:30Runner got on in the fourth inning on a hit batsman.
- 1:57:33He was out stealing.
- 1:57:34Pochette singled a roll from the fifth.
- 1:57:36He was out stealing.
- 1:57:37And it was a single by Brett in the sixth.
- 1:57:39And he was caught in a double play.
- 1:57:41So the infield and Munchen have backed Ellis up.
- 1:57:43The Royals have gotten people on base in every inning but the second, but they trail five-three.
- 1:57:48In the bullpen for New York now, realizing that maybe Ellis has had a long, long stay in his drug out
- 1:57:54while his team was getting the runs, Cidrow and Lyle are warning.
- 1:57:59Left-handed Sparky Lyle, right-handed Mitch Cidrow.
- 1:58:05So Whitey Herzog, who is making all the moves, getting every pitcher he possibly could in there,
- 1:58:13and has kept this thing relatively close when one big hit, other than the double by Maddux,
- 1:58:20especially if there's been a big one by Rivers, could have put this game out of reach, or just about.
- 1:58:26Well, there's plenty of time left in this one.
- 1:58:29We're at the top of the seventh.
- 1:58:32McCray the batter hasn't been up officially.
- 1:58:35Sacrifice Lyle and hit by a pitch.
- 1:58:37Fly ball right field.
- 1:58:39Not deep enough.
- 1:58:40Underhead is Maddux.
- 1:58:41Kelly has one hand. That's all.
- 1:58:43McCray flies to right. That's one away.
- 1:58:50Tom Pulchett has doubled in his drug out.
- 1:58:54He doubled home a run in the first inning.
- 1:58:57Said three hits and eight times up in the series.
- 1:59:03That's the end of the batter.
- 1:59:04Now the Royals must need to get people on base, and trailing by two runs,
- 1:59:09because they can still run a little, but maybe not as much as when they were ahead.
- 1:59:12Can't take too many chances. They have to get back in that thing.
- 1:59:16The strike is called on Pulchett.
- 1:59:19They get him in on a one-run basis, and they can try to advance that man to second base.
- 1:59:23Right now they need two to tie.
- 1:59:27Change up by Ellis. Bounce foul past Earth.
- 1:59:30Scott came in with a good change that time and had Pulchett off balance.
- 1:59:33He was swinging way ahead of it.
- 1:59:35Nothing in two to Pulchett.
- 1:59:38He's going to back right on deck, but he's not going to back.
- 1:59:40Cookie Rohas has come out and is kneeling on deck, and will back for white. Cookie Rohas.
- 1:59:52At this point, Whitey Herbog needs off end.
- 1:59:56Check swing by Pulchett. Gets away from Munson. Ball one. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:00:02The hits are even here, but the Yankees have a big one.
- 2:00:06The one that's not the equalizer, but the different hit is the homer by Sammler.
- 2:00:12It's a two-run jobThe Yankees are leading by two runs.
- 2:00:19Tipped by Ellis. Little pop foul, third base side is going to be out of play.
- 2:00:26Over the Royals dugout on the third base side.
- 2:00:31One ball, two strikes.
- 2:00:37Get in here tomorrow on the CBS Radio Network. Tomorrow afternoon.
- 2:00:44What? Well, we'll see whether it'll be the finish of this thing or whether it'll be carried over to Thursday, but there will be one tomorrow.
- 2:00:53Strike three, swinging.
- 2:00:55Doc Ellis with the slider, running in on Pulchett, strikes him out.
- 2:01:01That's four strikeouts for Ellis.
- 2:01:06Two out and Cookie Rohas batting for Frank White.
- 2:01:09Cookie Rohas, his second appearance, has a pink hitter in this series.
- 2:01:14Right-handed batter, the veteran who for many years held down second base here, and of course in the National League,
- 2:01:20had some fine years with the Philadelphia Nills.
- 2:01:25The pitch is outside and high for a ball.
- 2:01:29He was a fine second baseman. He played with one of the best shortstop, the best fielding shortstop in the National League, Bobby Wine.
- 2:01:37Pitch is outside for a ball, and some wags somewhere wrote about the fun, the plays of Wine and Rohas.
- 2:01:47That's pretty bad. Down ball to second. Picked up by Randolph, throws to first, that's all.
- 2:01:53Cookie Rohas, downs out second to first, and it's one, two, three in the seventh for the Royals.
- 2:01:59Here's the Fairhands State of Tenden, a new record for the New York City Stadium.
- 2:02:23Coming in now, you may have heard that on the box box right here in the booth, a new record for Yankee Stadium 2, 56,808.
- 2:02:38What were the people in left center field, the bleachers open, as Ernie told you earlier, for the first time.
- 2:02:44That added on to what the capacity had been, 54,002. 56,808 tonight at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:02:52And most of them are having fun.
- 2:02:56Batting left-handed this time, takes a strike from Littell.
- 2:03:00White has struck out, rounded out, and walks. He has scored a run.
- 2:03:07Tomorrow afternoon, it will be Capsaic Hunter against Larry Gura, same matchup as in game one.
- 2:03:13Pitch inside to White. One ball, one strike.
- 2:03:21Herman Munson on deck.
- 2:03:25And Mr. Munson has been instrumental tonight. He's thrown out two runners.
- 2:03:29Coming back from his dismal Sunday, pitches inside for a ball, two and one.
- 2:03:36It's two out two on opening day, Saturday, then the three-two away on Sunday for throwing errors.
- 2:03:42But he's gunned down a couple tonight.
- 2:03:47And the Royals running game has been taken away from them.
- 2:03:52Dry ball, center field. Not too deep coming in toward right center is Cowens.
- 2:03:58And Al Cowens makes the catch. Everybody was out there. They had Patek ranging far from short.
- 2:04:04And the outfielder's coming in, but with Cowens, ball all the way.
- 2:04:10Herman Munson has lined to right, rounded to short, and doubled to right.
- 2:04:14A very big double setting up all this scoring in a thick finish.
- 2:04:18It was after a leadoff walk to Roy White, and the double got the starter, Andy Hansler, out of there.
- 2:04:28Munson, Nevada, with Carlos May on deck. One out, Yankees leading 5-3, seven finish.
- 2:04:35That's New York.
- 2:04:41Now the pitch. Queen strikes.
- 2:04:47Yatelle has a lot of cool for a youngster.
- 2:04:50Earlier in the season, people saw Whitey Herzog go to the bullpen and bring this fellow in in tight spots.
- 2:04:56They were wondering why a youngster, but then when they saw him throw, they knew why.
- 2:05:02So one strike delivery. Line drive, they hit the left field.
- 2:05:07Over and toward the line is Wolford, and holding it first with a long single is Munson.
- 2:05:13He just muscled that one out there. A line drive, they hit the left.
- 2:05:17The Yankees have a runner with one out.
- 2:05:22So the Yankees have cut some people on base off every pitcher that they have faced since the first hit off Letell, and the seventh for New York.
- 2:05:31Carlos May up. That is for Panella, the D.H. bottom of sixth inning, and was intentionally walked.
- 2:05:38Didn't work too well.
- 2:05:42He was forced later on, but two runs surrounded that.
- 2:05:48Patek and Rojas, the double play-dots.
- 2:05:51Pucquerojas playing second base now after batting for Frank White.
- 2:05:57The pitch. Five strikes tall, right at the shoulders.
- 2:06:02Fastball, rolled right in there, and nothing in one.
- 2:06:10Outfield straightaway on May, took way up on the bat.
- 2:06:17Red glove on the right hand and a white glove on the left.
- 2:06:21Fastball up and away, ball one, one ball, one strike.
- 2:06:28Patek banged out proud at Yankee Stadium for the first game in this new ballpark of a playoff nature.
- 2:06:38The strike itself, however, has seen others, many others.
- 2:06:43Here's the threat by Letell, for the first, not in time.
- 2:06:50Rojas is the second baseman, Patek at short, and George Brett at third.
- 2:06:58Wolford, Cowans, and Poquette left the right of the outfield.
- 2:07:02The pitch. Strikes tall outside corner. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:07:09Picture of Mark Letell and the catcher is Buck Martinez.
- 2:07:18If you're looking to the top of inning number eight, Patek, Martinez, and Wolford will be scheduled up for the Royals.
- 2:07:29Got to get into that 90-foot game again.
- 2:07:32Strikes free, swinging. May is out of there, two away.
- 2:07:36Second strikeout for Letell.
- 2:07:41The hand for Chris Dambler.
- 2:07:46He is knocked in free of the five Yankees runs, two of them with a homer in the fourth, and another with a fielder's choice in the sixth.
- 2:07:53He is one for three.
- 2:07:57Six for 11, six for 12 on the series, batting 500.
- 2:08:04Munson edges off first, not a big lead. No threat to go.
- 2:08:09There's a high pop foul over toward the third base dugout. Martinez near it, but it bounces right on top of the dugout and into the ground.
- 2:08:18One strike.
- 2:08:27The Cincinnati Reds are national league champions again, defeating the Philadelphia Phils seven to six this afternoon at Cincinnati.
- 2:08:35Big, nice inning. They were trailing six to four. It appeared the Phils were going to stay alive.
- 2:08:40They had Ron Reid in there. It's been their best reliever all year.
- 2:08:44And immediately, bang, home run, George Foster.
- 2:08:47Next man up, bang, home run, Johnny Bentz.
- 2:08:50Tied it up, and eventually they went on to win on a chopping ground ball to first, with the bases loaded.
- 2:08:56So they will wait, play inter-squad games, and see what happens here.
- 2:09:03It'll start Saturday in the National League City, Cincinnati.
- 2:09:13Six, let her go. Swing, strike, and a foul.
- 2:09:17And Munson, as they had a play going, will have to come back. She was not going as a stealer.
- 2:09:21They had Shambler swinging, and tried to get permanent jumpers if they were to step a few over there.
- 2:09:27The counter is 0-2 to Shambler.
- 2:09:31That's him bleeding, 5-3.
- 2:09:36They're batting at a 7.
- 2:09:47The foul appears down for the time.
- 2:09:56Goes to first, a hard throw over there, but Munson is only two steps off.
- 2:10:01Gets back easily.
- 2:10:14Now the fifth, and the pitch.
- 2:10:18Ground ball, right side, a hit.
- 2:10:20Almost hit Munson, who will go to third.
- 2:10:23Runners at first and third, two out.
- 2:10:27Chris Shambler, right in the middle of things again, strokes the single to right.
- 2:10:31Munson was moving, and almost was hit by that bouncing ball.
- 2:10:35Of course, that would have been the third out.
- 2:10:37But now the Yankees are riding again, with runners at the corners and two away, and Greg Nettles up.
- 2:10:44Nettles had a big hit in the sixth inning, singling home a run to keep things going.
- 2:10:52Nettles is one for two officially, is walk one.
- 2:10:55Yankees leading 5-3 and threatening for more.
- 2:10:59Two out, two on, seven thinning.
- 2:11:10Royal infield, shading Nettles toward right, playing very deep in the infield.
- 2:11:17And Mayberry guarding the line at first base, playing behind Shambler.
- 2:11:22Time called, Martinez out to talk to Lattell.
- 2:11:30Now back behind the plate.
- 2:11:36Greg Nettles, go for Brooks, kind of hitter, American League batting champion in 76.
- 2:11:47Now Lattell is ready and throws, and it's outside low, ball one.
- 2:11:56Elliott Maddox on deck. He's been heard from tonight, a double driving and a run.
- 2:12:13One ball, no strikes.
- 2:12:17Right fielder Tom Puchet playing very deep for Nettles, as well he might.
- 2:12:23And here it comes, check swing, it's outside, ball two.
- 2:12:28Two and nothing.
- 2:12:33Royal pitching staff struggling.
- 2:12:38Somewhat of a disappointment I would imagine to Whitey Herzog,
- 2:12:42except for the brilliant job turned in Sunday by Paul Swidor.
- 2:12:48And not a bad job really on opening day by Larry Gura.
- 2:12:52Pitch to Nettles, a check swing foul off his foot, and it rolls out to third base,
- 2:12:57where it's picked up by Brett and Nettles is down.
- 2:13:01That one right off his right foot, either off the instep or the toe,
- 2:13:05and he's seen so many times, what about it will do that.
- 2:13:09Some hitters will wear a protective flap on his shoe.
- 2:13:13Now help from the Yankee trainer with some ethyl chloride sprayed,
- 2:13:17who's dead in the pain as Nettles just hits his home plate.
- 2:13:22And that gives the hotel time to do a little extra warming up, loosening up as Greg Nettles.
- 2:13:29You know Larry, sometimes you wonder, especially in cold weather,
- 2:13:32not that it's that cold or nice, but in the spring when a hitter does that,
- 2:13:36how he can ever stand again.
- 2:13:38It's hard, but they do it and they manage to stand.
- 2:13:41Their man on hand is looking him over now.
- 2:13:44He's on his feet again, he seems to be all right.
- 2:13:47You wonder how they can get back in there and take a full stride,
- 2:13:51but they're so used to it I guess, and the spray doesn't help.
- 2:13:57The count is two and one to Greg.
- 2:14:03He has walked, struck out, and is single.
- 2:14:06Line drive single, it fell right in front of Al Cowan in the sixth inning.
- 2:14:11He's almost ready to catch it.
- 2:14:16The tell to the stretch, the pause, and the pitch.
- 2:14:21Now here it comes, right up our way, only above us.
- 2:14:25Look at you now, the Nettles.
- 2:14:34Munson at third base and Sam Bliss at first, two out.
- 2:14:40The tell working very, very deliberately.
- 2:14:46Reads his sign from Martinez.
- 2:14:51Now gets set.
- 2:14:55There it comes, there goes Sam Bliss, fouled back.
- 2:14:58Sam Bliss moving to second base, has to return,
- 2:15:01and the Nettles took a big cut and fouled it to the screen.
- 2:15:06Two out remains, two balls, two strikes, two outs and two on.
- 2:15:10Yankees five, Royals three.
- 2:15:13Royals got three in the first, the Yankees two in the fourth, and three in the sixth.
- 2:15:26Two-two.
- 2:15:32Nettles was waiting, leveling the bats back and forth, long looked by Letell.
- 2:15:40Young right-hander, so Sam Bliss goes again and again, it's fouled off,
- 2:15:43and Chris will take off another foul, and the two coming back.
- 2:15:49Two balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 2:15:53Al Fitzmaur working doggedly in the bullpen for the Royals.
- 2:16:00He hasn't been used or yet in this series.
- 2:16:03And of course he was one of the main starters that Whitey Herzog had this year.
- 2:16:09Fitzmaur, Doug Burr coming out of the bullpen to be a starter.
- 2:16:14And of course, Leonard, Dennis Leonard.
- 2:16:21Two-two delivery, round ball foul outside of first, past Shelley Howard.
- 2:16:26Sam Bliss was holding that time at first.
- 2:16:32Two-and-two.
- 2:16:36It was a big three that they had, and Marty Paxton was a starter later on.
- 2:16:40They all were trying to take up slack, the slack left by the injury and eventual operations on Steve Fosby,
- 2:16:48potential 20-game winner.
- 2:16:50He went off without half a season.
- 2:16:54Here comes Diego Shambles.
- 2:16:56There's a ball.
- 2:16:57A bluff towards second, a throw to third.
- 2:16:58Not in time.
- 2:17:00Goal and base for Chris Shambles.
- 2:17:02Martinez went through with a bluff, hoping that Munson would take the bluff and move off the back.
- 2:17:09But Thurman was off in a little bit.
- 2:17:10He drew a throw down there, but not in time.
- 2:17:13Shambles gets the steal.
- 2:17:15Gunners at second and third, and the count is three and two now to Nettles.
- 2:17:19The free kick now would make it even more serious for the Royals, who trail by two.
- 2:17:26Time called by shortstop Fred Potec.
- 2:17:30And he moves over to talk to his pitcher.
- 2:17:34Nettles, a left-handed batter up.
- 2:17:36Now, what do you want to do?
- 2:17:37Do you want to walk him?
- 2:17:38James, this left-handed hitter up.
- 2:17:41And load the base, setting up the force.
- 2:17:44Also risking the walk, and then take your chances with right-handed hitter Elliot Maddux, who is two up next.
- 2:17:51But then, if that happened, it's very possible that they could back for Maddux and put Oscar Gamble, a left-handed hitter in there, who can be tough on right-handed pipping.
- 2:18:03Three and two.
- 2:18:04Be very careful is what they say.
- 2:18:07Careful of Nettles.
- 2:18:11The windup.
- 2:18:12The three-two pitch.
- 2:18:14Ground ball, the first base, taken by Maybury, plays it alone for the final out.
- 2:18:18The Yankees do not score, though they do have a threat going.
- 2:18:22Nettles drowning out to Maybury unassisted.
- 2:18:24No runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 2:18:27There were two hits and two men left on base.
- 2:18:30At the end of seventh, the score of the Yankees five, the Royals three.
- 2:18:37Now, Jim Palmer, the Baltimore pitcher today, was named the winner of the fourth annual Joe Cronin Award.
- 2:18:43Palmer has won 20 more games now for six of the last seven seasons, including a league-leading 22 victories this year.
- 2:18:51They had a ceremonial presentation of the award made prior to the game, near the night between the Yankees and the Royals.
- 2:18:57And Mr. Cronin is celebrating his 70th birthday on this date.
- 2:19:01The award is for, quote, significant achievement in baseball, end quote, and that's sort of a rough equivalent to the player of the year presentation.
- 2:19:10This season, Jim Palmer won 22 games for the Orioles, the most in the league.
- 2:19:14He also topped the American League in innings six, and the game started, and he was fifth with his earned run average of 2.51.
- 2:19:22Jim is among the leading candidates for the Cy Young Award for 1976.
- 2:19:28And if he gets it, he'll be the first American League to win it three times.
- 2:19:32You're tuned to your CBS Radio Network station for game number three in the American League playoffs,
- 2:19:44and that means you're tuned to the only radio spot for the World Series.
- 2:19:48Starting Saturday, October the 16th, CBS Radio Sports brings you exclusive radio play-by-play coverage.
- 2:19:56Follow the series on radio right here.
- 2:20:03Well, a lot of folks talking about the Cincinnati Rays and what a fine ball club they are,
- 2:20:07and deservedly so, prove themselves the best in baseball over the last couple of years.
- 2:20:11They will face the winner of this series, of course, starting Saturday afternoon.
- 2:20:16But a word about the Philadelphia Phillies, who did an excellent job and were an awesome baseball team for most of 1976.
- 2:20:23They won 101 games, just one less than they read to beat them in the playoffs.
- 2:20:28You'll hear from the Phillies for quite a few seasons to come.
- 2:20:31Freddy Potech bounces one foul as we start the eighth inning.
- 2:20:35Potech has ground it out and singles.
- 2:20:39The Royals trail the Yankees five to three.
- 2:20:42We're running out of track here at the eighth inning.
- 2:20:46Potech, Martinez, and Walpers scheduled up, and Martinez will not bat.
- 2:20:51Jamie Quirk is on deck.
- 2:20:55Left-handed hitter, as what he heard is, I feel that he better go to his bench.
- 2:21:01It's one and one now, the Potech.
- 2:21:05Foul back.
- 2:21:15One ball, two strikes.
- 2:21:25Jack Ellis has gone all the way for New York.
- 2:21:28Picked himself a strong ball game since the first inning when he was cold at the start.
- 2:21:35Drive the third, nice play by Nettles on the trap hop, he throws him out.
- 2:21:40Good play on a ball that exploded at his feet.
- 2:21:43He stayed right with it, and throughout Potech, one away.
- 2:21:48Two good plays by Nettles in this game.
- 2:21:51Here is Jamie Quirk, left-handed ten-shitter, coming on to bat.
- 2:21:59Batting for Buck Martinez, there will be another catcher in the bottom of this inning.
- 2:22:05Jamie?
- 2:22:33There will be another catcher in the bottom of this inning.
- 2:22:37Jamie Quirk, left-handed hitter.
- 2:22:42All the years, 246.
- 2:22:45And limited duty for the Royals, but he helped out too.
- 2:22:50Picked his outside to him for a ball.
- 2:23:00One ball, no strikes.
- 2:23:03And the pick to Quirk gets a high foul ball out of play, third base five.
- 2:23:08Let's pause here ten seconds for safe identification.
- 2:23:11This is the CBS Radio Network.
- 2:23:13With the 97-coin cash box sticker, you could win a television set, or even money.
- 2:23:18But without the sticker, you get nothing.
- 2:23:25Back at Yankee City, a med-marching here with Ernie Harwell.
- 2:23:28Yankee is leading the Royals 5-3.
- 2:23:30We're in the top of the eighth inning, and Jamie Quirk is batting for Buck Martinez.
- 2:23:35He was the top left-handed ten-shitter for the Royals this year.
- 2:23:39Inside, a slider from Doc Ellis.
- 2:23:42Two balls, one strike.
- 2:23:44His first full year in the majors, and he backed up George Bledis, third.
- 2:23:49Also played a couple of games at first base.
- 2:23:52Down foul off to the right.
- 2:23:55Two and two.
- 2:24:05Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:24:22He goes to work, and it's way high, off the glove of Munson, who looks out at him,
- 2:24:26and says, that's not what I called for.
- 2:24:30Those bullpens are busy with Lyle and Tidro and the Yankee fan, and Dennis Leonard,
- 2:24:36who started the Sunday game right-handed, going with Paul Splittor in the Royals bullpen.
- 2:24:44The count is two and two, and the scoreboard has three and three up there.
- 2:24:49It's not easy, is it?
- 2:24:52For a while it was two and three, and then they changed it to three and three.
- 2:24:58Ellis working to Quirk.
- 2:25:00And a way outside pitch is off the edge of the glove by Munson.
- 2:25:07Bill is having a time with Ellis right now.
- 2:25:17Three balls, two strikes.
- 2:25:21And her dog is coming out to talk to the plate umpire, George Maloney.
- 2:25:32He has had his word, and I don't know what that was either.
- 2:25:41Danny Quirk from Whittier, California, stands in three and two.
- 2:25:47Fixed by Ellis, a foul ball.
- 2:25:49He went for a pitch around the knees, or maybe lower, but it was close enough to go for.
- 2:25:54And the count hangs at three and two.
- 2:25:57Jim Walford on deck.
- 2:26:05I just saw one of the policemen, and I don't know what that was for.
- 2:26:08They just went over and got a baseball, and I guess they're going to say it's illegal.
- 2:26:15Strike three, swinging.
- 2:26:18Doc Ellis with a shaking fast ball strikes out, then hitter Jamie Quirk.
- 2:26:22They are two away.
- 2:26:28Jim Walford is up.
- 2:26:30He has walked, rounded out, and flied to center, and Billy Martin wants a word with Ellis.
- 2:26:35Johnson is out there talking, and Nettles is over from third.
- 2:26:41Yankees now just four outs away from a very big, big win in this playoff series, and an edge.
- 2:26:49A big edge going into tomorrow afternoon.
- 2:26:55Walford, 0 for 2.
- 2:26:57He's going to run in the first inning, when it appeared for a while as if the Royals were going to
- 2:27:01hit and run and run away from the Yankees and hide, but that is not to be.
- 2:27:07Strike called, slider hitting the outside corner.
- 2:27:16Ellis working smoothly now.
- 2:27:20A 1-2-3 inning in the second, again in the seventh.
- 2:27:25Ball back, one ball, one strike.
- 2:27:30Two outs away, nobody on.
- 2:27:39Ellis reads the sign and goes to work.
- 2:27:43Ball outside, 2-1.
- 2:27:53Al Cowan is on deck.
- 2:27:59Low and outside, ball free, 3-1.
- 2:28:03No doubt about it, the Royals do miss Amos Odo.
- 2:28:07Regardless of what's said or what Lovato has shown, you just don't get a player of that caliber out in a series like this and not feel it.
- 2:28:17Ball four, Walford is on, and that is not to knock Jim Walford.
- 2:28:21He's done a good job playing the outfield and being on base a while.
- 2:28:28Brock Ellis walks his second batter.
- 2:28:32He's hit one.
- 2:28:35And now, as it turns out, the tying runs at the plate for the Royals.
- 2:28:39Al Cowan, who does not hit the long ball, is one for free tonight, singled in the third.
- 2:28:49The Royals have not been able to lay back and wait for the long ball this season, mainly because their main home run hitter,
- 2:28:56John Mayberry, has had an off year.
- 2:29:03Hits the Cowan inside, ball one.
- 2:29:14Ellis is fan five while walking, too.
- 2:29:20Strike, one ball, one strike.
- 2:29:2425, Royals three, Royals batting in the eighth.
- 2:29:27Two out, one on.
- 2:29:33Infield deep, the set by Ellis, and the pitch is fouled back by Cowan.
- 2:29:39So he is behind one and two.
- 2:29:43And he's been pitched outside by Ellis all night long, breaking stuff away, and it's given him trouble.
- 2:29:50He managed one hit, leadoff single in the third, but he was doubled up after that.
- 2:29:56And Nettles made a good playoff in the sixth.
- 2:30:01There's a drive over short, but stabbed by Stanley for the final out.
- 2:30:06Nice play by Fred Stanley. He went to his left, leaked a little bit, and speared a hotline drive.
- 2:30:11And Cowan is hitting in tough luck tonight.
- 2:30:14That's all for the Royals in the eighth inning.
- 2:30:16No runs, no hits, one left.
- 2:30:19In the middle of the eighth, the score of the Yankees five, the Royals three.
- 2:30:24Introducing three new full-size cars from Buick, the 1977 Les Sabres, Amectra, and Riviera.
- 2:30:31Something very special has happened to them since last year.
- 2:30:35There's a new livery in the spring.
- 2:30:38They're impressively agile, easy to maneuver, and they're compact, and they offer better gas mileage.
- 2:30:44In APHS, the new Les Sabres was standard V6 in automatic transmission.
- 2:30:49Got 25 miles per gallon on the highway, 18 in the city.
- 2:30:54Amectra and Riviera was standard V8 in automatic transmission.
- 2:30:57Got 22 on the highway, 15 in the city.
- 2:31:01Now these figures are estimates. In California, their lower annual mileage may vary.
- 2:31:06But those are remarkable mileage numbers for luxurious six passenger automobiles.
- 2:31:11Amectra and Riviera are the full-size cars of the future.
- 2:31:16The only other change is the only change in the sitting for Whitey Herzog.
- 2:31:45The Royals are trailing the Yankees, five to three, and the Yankees will be at bat in the bottom of the eighth inning
- 2:31:53in the lower third of their order coming up against Marc Lattell.
- 2:31:56Maddox, Randolph, and Stanley scheduled up.
- 2:31:59Yankees with two big innings, the fourth from the sixth with two in the fourth and three in the sixth.
- 2:32:05And the Royals got their three runs in the first, so there's been the big inning concept tonight.
- 2:32:12Lattell has not done badly since coming on.
- 2:32:19He came on to put out all kinds of smoldering and raging fires in the sixth inning with a strikeout, a walk, and a pop-up.
- 2:32:27Then got out of a self-made jam in the seventh.
- 2:32:30He had given up a couple of base hits, but he got medals out, and that's to care of that.
- 2:32:36Remember that tomorrow on the CBS Radio Network, Game 4 will be broadcast right here on radio with the Yankees against the Royals,
- 2:32:44airtime 3.07 Eastern Daylight Time, 2.07 Central Time.
- 2:32:51Tomorrow, Game 4, 3.07 Eastern Daylight Time.
- 2:32:56Elliott Maddox first up, one for three. He doubled home a run in the sixth inning.
- 2:33:04Tomorrow, it'll be Captain Hunter for the New York Yankees, trying for a second series win.
- 2:33:10And Larry Gura will come out, try to hold the board as it stands now for Kansas City.
- 2:33:16The Royals do have one more chance here tonightThe pitch is inside the Maddox ball once.
- 2:33:27Mattel leading the sign and going to work on Maddox. Foul ball out of play, so at the right side and toward the upper deck, into the upper deck.
- 2:33:38Three decks at Yankee StadiumThe middle deck are lower, just below press row and radio, though, here.
- 2:33:47Kind of a mezzanine type deck.
- 2:33:51Slide or outside, two balls, one strike.
- 2:33:57Big upper deck, and it goes straight up like a lot of the new parks, like the one in Anaheim,
- 2:34:03which gives everybody a clear shot of the field, good spot, even if you are in the third deck. There's a called strike.
- 2:34:14There was an unevenness in center field earlier in the year. They first landscaped this ground, re-landscaped it.
- 2:34:25Check swing capper to the mound, picked up by Mattel. He throws Maddox out. One away.
- 2:34:33Willie Randolph is up. He's Hitless. He's Hitless in a series, 0-2 tonight and 0-9 in the three games played so far.
- 2:34:42Turns the ninth play around second base, though.
- 2:34:46Turns the double play as well as anybody can imagine. Good fielding second baseman.
- 2:34:54The pitch. Fastball blazed inside, ball one.
- 2:35:03Yankee's leading 5-3 over Kansas City.
- 2:35:07Bottom of the eighth inning, one out. Round ball passed the mound this time and into center field.
- 2:35:12First hit for Willie Randolph in the series.
- 2:35:16It whistled past the mound and floated on the grass, but not enough.
- 2:35:20And Rojas, crossing to his right, contact to his left, did not catch up with it.
- 2:35:25Randolph gets his first playoff hit.
- 2:35:30The third hit off Latel, and Fred Stanley is up.
- 2:35:34Stanley has popped up, ratted out, and drawn a walk.
- 2:35:39Yankee's with their two big innings, leading 5-3.
- 2:35:43Trying for more. They have been buzzing around here ever since the fourth inning.
- 2:35:49After three very strong innings had been worked by Andy Hasler, the starter.
- 2:35:57So the first base, not in time.
- 2:36:01Randolph at first, one out.
- 2:36:14Latel works, and it's way outside, not a pitch out.
- 2:36:20A ball.
- 2:36:23In the Royal Knights, their last chance, they will have their middle three up.
- 2:36:27They're the belt of their batting order, Brett, Mayberry, and McCray.
- 2:36:36Latel to Stanley, runner goes.
- 2:36:38Throw to second base, and he's taped.
- 2:36:41Stolen base, Willie Randolph.
- 2:36:44The pitch was a ball. It counted one ball, one strike for Stanley.
- 2:36:47A strike rather, and a stolen base for Randolph.
- 2:36:52Put a Yankee in scoring position. Willie Martin, ever trying to get that extra edge.
- 2:37:00Never letting up.
- 2:37:03One ball, one strike to Stanley.
- 2:37:07Pre-run game, a lot different from a two-run game in any ballpark.
- 2:37:12Get a man on in a pre-run game, it still isn't enough.
- 2:37:19It is. Fly ball, shallow right center.
- 2:37:23Coming on is the ice fielder, Pochette, who makes the play and throws in the pocket.
- 2:37:29He called off Cowan, who had broken for the ball, but it was in the domain of the right fielder.
- 2:37:34Stanley flies to Pochette, two out. Mickey Rivers up.
- 2:37:43Rivers is one for four, infield hit of the first inning.
- 2:37:57Rivers has three hits and 13 times ups in this series.
- 2:38:03Six to six low and outside, ball one.
- 2:38:12Randolph with speed into his leadoff second base.
- 2:38:18Lattell checks him out and throws to the plate, strike swinging.
- 2:38:25Rivers hasn't had the ball out of the infield tonight really, his hit was too shortstop on the first inning.
- 2:38:31Since then he's fouled out, ratted out, and popped up.
- 2:38:37Fets way over at the plate, pushing the basket.
- 2:38:42Lattell kicks and throws, ground ball to second.
- 2:38:45Up with it's rojas, over the first low throw, dug out by Maybury and that's the end of the year.
- 2:38:51The Yankees in the eighth inning have no runs, one hit, they leave one.
- 2:38:57And at the end of eight innings the score is New York five, Kansas City three.
- 2:39:03In a country with two centuries with the most exciting history on earth, can any one year stand out?
- 2:39:10Oh yes, 1876, when the National Baseball League played its very first season and Alexander Graham Bell made the first home call ever.
- 2:39:20And the mountains, mining towns, and citizens of Colorado became our 38 states.
- 2:39:25And a beer was born in St. Louis, Missouri.
- 2:39:29It was brewed with only the very finest ingredients and slowly beached wood age.
- 2:39:34Its taste, smoothness, and drinkability were in a word, incomparable.
- 2:39:39Its payment appeal spread quickly to all corners of the earth.
- 2:39:42It was Budweiser, and it still is today.
- 2:39:46Still beached wood age.
- 2:39:48Still brewed proudly by people who care about college.
- 2:39:55Budweiser, the king of beers for a hundred years.
- 2:40:00And I support headquarters St. Louis, Missouri.
- 2:40:04Well what's new for baseball fans once the postseason game ends?
- 2:40:07That's easy to hot stove lead.
- 2:40:09That's always a fun time with a season to rehash trades and expansion.
- 2:40:13Talk about rookies.
- 2:40:15And what's the one thing that'll make your hot stove lead season more assuring?
- 2:40:19Knowing that you've already made plans for your season tickets for 77.
- 2:40:23Those plans are as close as a telephone.
- 2:40:26Make a call to any club's ticket department and have your tickets set aside.
- 2:40:30Do it right away.
- 2:40:31Businesses will find their season tickets very useful for entertaining.
- 2:40:36The preceding has been brought to you on behalf of Major League Baseball.
- 2:40:43Sparkey Lyle has been brought in by Billy Martin to work the ninth inning.
- 2:40:47Figuring that Doc Ellis has thrown a lot of pitches.
- 2:40:49Maybe it's maybe retiring a little bit.
- 2:40:52Stiffening up some and he wonders the fresh arm in there.
- 2:40:55Particularly the pitch to Brett and Mayberry who are left-handed batters.
- 2:40:58It will be the first two hitters this inning.
- 2:41:02Doc Ellis went eight innings, gave up six hits and three runs, walked two,
- 2:41:07struck out four, he struck out five, and he hit a batter.
- 2:41:12And just a fine ball game after the rough first inning when they scored three runs off him.
- 2:41:18So Lyle now is seven and eight on the year with a 2.26 earned on average.
- 2:41:24He's on to work.
- 2:41:26And he is warming up right now.
- 2:41:29He'll face Brett, Mayberry, and McCray.
- 2:41:32PBS Radio Sports is bringing you the play-by-play action in the American League Championship.
- 2:41:37And there is more to come.
- 2:41:39The World Series starts October 16th.
- 2:41:42That's next Saturday.
- 2:41:43And you'll hear exclusive radio coverage play-by-play of the 1976 World Series
- 2:41:48right here on this PBS Radio Network station.
- 2:41:56Lyle has completed his warm-up.
- 2:42:02He is making his first appearance in this playoff series.
- 2:42:07Dick Kidrow is the only other Yankee reliever to make an appearance.
- 2:42:13He worked in Sunday's game.
- 2:42:18First man up will be George Brett, and he is two for three.
- 2:42:21Brett is now six for ten in this series.
- 2:42:26He has knocked in one of the runs tonight and scored one.
- 2:42:30And Lyle is here to save it.
- 2:42:38Brett, left-handed hitter, lays back, and Lyle pitches inside and high at ball one.
- 2:42:53Sparky to the windup, throws high and inside again, ball two.
- 2:42:59Lyle was not used much in the second half of the season.
- 2:43:03Mainly he said, and he admitted, that Grant Jackson had done a super job from the left side
- 2:43:07along with right-hander Kidrow.
- 2:43:10High ball three.
- 2:43:13So he said, I haven't had much work, but I'm ready.
- 2:43:17Sparky has the good slider.
- 2:43:19That is his outfit.
- 2:43:24Ball four.
- 2:43:26Brett walks. He's on base again for the third time he's on base.
- 2:43:30That means that Mayberry is a tying run, as will everybody be as long as the man is on here.
- 2:43:35The Yankees lead it five for three as the Royals try to do something here in the ninth inning.
- 2:43:42They're battling now.
- 2:43:47Backed up here with a five-three score against them in game three.
- 2:43:51And the prospect of going against Katz their center with a deciding game, if that's the case, tomorrow.
- 2:44:00There's a strike to Mayberry, taking on that first pitch.
- 2:44:03John has had one hit in free-trip, the single in the left center field in the first inning.
- 2:44:09Wow, works again, and there's a long drive to right field, but it hangs up.
- 2:44:13Under it is Maddox. He comes in, he's got it, and there's one away.
- 2:44:16It started out well, but it just died, and it sounds as if Mayberry may have broken his back.
- 2:44:21I think he did break it, man. He got the wood on it, but then the wood cracked on it.
- 2:44:26Yeah, that held it all up. It just died out there.
- 2:44:29So there's one away as Big John was trying to tie it up right there.
- 2:44:33Now it's Hal McCray, and McCray is due.
- 2:44:36Right now he is the only member on either team of the starting pitch players not to have a hit in this series so far.
- 2:44:44He is 0-4-8. He did have a sacrifice fly in the first inning tonight to drive in a run.
- 2:44:50He was hit by a pitch in the fourth.
- 2:44:52He is 0-4-1 in this game, 0-4-8 on a series.
- 2:44:56In field, a double play depth, the pitch is high, ball one.
- 2:45:03Focky Lowe from Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania.
- 2:45:07Originally, Lowe carved back into his feet by McCray.
- 2:45:13One ball, one strike.
- 2:45:19One thing, as we told you, that Charlie Lowe has said about McCray,
- 2:45:24he's just trying to tone him down a little and try not to have him go for the long ball too much, just hit the way he did all year.
- 2:45:31There's a fly ball going foul down into right field and in the crowd.
- 2:45:36One ball, two strikes.
- 2:45:38Bled at first base, one out. Yankee bullpen as left-hander Grant Jackson, right-hander Dick Kidrill working.
- 2:45:46There's been a lot of work in those bullpens tonight both sides.
- 2:45:49They're all warm. They're ready to go.
- 2:45:52Everybody's been up just about.
- 2:45:56Steph Bird in the Kansas City pen.
- 2:45:58Lowe has the count his way.
- 2:46:00One ball, two strikes to Howell McCray.
- 2:46:02The look short first and the pitch to the plate is high.
- 2:46:06Ball two, two and two.
- 2:46:10McCray, a right-handed batter up there, and Tom Pochette, a left-handed batter, is on deck.
- 2:46:17There it is. Foul again.
- 2:46:19McCray, a left-handed batter, is on deck.
- 2:46:21Tom Pochette, a left-handed batter, is on deck.
- 2:46:23Tom Pochette, a left-handed batter, is on deck.
- 2:46:25There it is. Foul again.
- 2:46:28McCray trying to go to the opposite field on an outside pitch.
- 2:46:35Yankee five, Royals three, top of the night.
- 2:46:41A lot was done in the ninth inning by the Cincinnati Reds today.
- 2:46:45Hills had a two-run lead, and the Reds just overcame it.
- 2:46:50Lyle Reddy pitching to McCray and foul back.
- 2:47:00Well, one half of Howell McCray's dream has come true.
- 2:47:03The Cincinnati Reds, whom he used to play for, won their side of it in the National League.
- 2:47:08What he has wanted to do is get into the World Series against them.
- 2:47:11They're the team that traded him away.
- 2:47:15Good pitch.
- 2:47:17Foul again, spoiling an outside fastball.
- 2:47:22But there's a way to go for Mr. McCray to get that.
- 2:47:25His team's got to get up on his back, from his back, and try to beat the Yankees in the playoffs.
- 2:47:33Time left.
- 2:47:35The step by Lyle.
- 2:47:37The pitch.
- 2:47:38Fly ball right field.
- 2:47:40Back forward is Maddox.
- 2:47:42Towards the line, he's got it throughout.
- 2:47:47McCray did go to the opposite field, but lifted it up there.
- 2:47:51Now there'll be a pen-pitter for Puchet.
- 2:47:59David Nelson, an infielder, has gone aback for Tom Puchet.
- 2:48:04Nelson is a right-handed hitter.
- 2:48:07Nelson on the year in limited play.
- 2:48:10Hit 235.
- 2:48:11He used to be very, very fast.
- 2:48:13He's been hampered by injuries.
- 2:48:15Got in 78 ball games for the Royals.
- 2:48:18Had one homer in 17 runs batted in.
- 2:48:23Had four doubles and a couple of triples.
- 2:48:26David Nelson has been around in the majors.
- 2:48:29Last team he played for, the Texas Rangers.
- 2:48:32Very likeable seller.
- 2:48:37Been a valuable boy.
- 2:48:39Got a have on all the clubs he's played with.
- 2:48:42David Nelson, the Royals down to their last out.
- 2:48:46Try to hang in there.
- 2:48:48Get one up on the Yankees, but they trail by two runs.
- 2:48:52The Yankee bench.
- 2:48:55How's the Yankee bench?
- 2:48:57The Yankee bench.
- 2:49:02How's her motioning nettles at third to come in a half step.
- 2:49:09Nettles can send me.
- 2:49:10Nelson can still run.
- 2:49:11There's a ground ball.
- 2:49:13His short third, it is a foul ball off the foot of Nelson.
- 2:49:20Runner at first is George Brett.
- 2:49:22Led the inning with a walk, but he has stayed there on two fly balls to right field.
- 2:49:33Nothing in one, defensive hitter Dave Nelson.
- 2:49:40While in there trying to nail it down for Doc Ellison.
- 2:49:44He throws and it's a foul again.
- 2:49:47This time up into the upper deck along first base line and a nice catch
- 2:49:51by a young shoe, almost lost it but held on.
- 2:49:58Nelson has played with the Cleveland Indians.
- 2:50:00He's played with Washington Senators when they were still in Washington in 1970.
- 2:50:06Moved to Texas later.
- 2:50:09And now here.
- 2:50:11Yankee crowd roaring, sensing a win.
- 2:50:14As Lyle gets in, the count is 0-2.
- 2:50:17Here's the pitch.
- 2:50:19A ball high, fast ball upstairs and the count is 1-2.
- 2:50:29Not only are they cheering but they're up on their feet.
- 2:50:33There's a little pop foul, first base side and it's going to be out of play.
- 2:50:37Samblers gave it a good try.
- 2:50:39It was just one row past the outstretched glove of Samblers.
- 2:50:43There's hardly any foul room after you pass first base.
- 2:50:47Foul room goes to practically nothing.
- 2:50:49A little isosceles triangle down there toward the foul line.
- 2:50:53Samblers had no room.
- 2:50:55Crowd all up standing.
- 2:50:59Nelson waiting for the 1-2 pitch from Sparky Lyle as the Yankees try to make it game three.
- 2:51:05The winner, period.
- 2:51:07Foul ball back.
- 2:51:09The Yankees leading 5-3 in the ninth.
- 2:51:12They have out hit the Royals 9-6.
- 2:51:20The Royals are just nuts except for brief flashes on Sunday in the first inning today.
- 2:51:25But anything's about mounting any consistent attack.
- 2:51:29Nelson wants time.
- 2:51:30Lyle looks down.
- 2:51:32Get.
- 2:51:33He throws.
- 2:51:35Down foul off to the right again.
- 2:51:37Past Steve Bowes, the first base coach.
- 2:51:40A lot of foul room.
- 2:51:42One on one, Lyle and Nelson.
- 2:51:47The on deck hitters took you real hot.
- 2:51:54Lyle again with another baseball.
- 2:51:57Comes up on top.
