- 0:43SPEAKER_03: How are you, but?
- 0:44SPEAKER_03: Oh, doing good, doing good.
- 0:46SPEAKER_03: As the intro says, often imitated, never duplicated.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: You know, they say the uh imitation is the best form of flattery, isn't it right, Jake?
- 0:55SPEAKER_04: Something like that.
- 0:56SPEAKER_03: We'll just run with that.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: Um, man, lots of good stuff to talk about on this episode.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: And I'm excited.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: We've got a young man coming on that most haven't heard of, but they're gonna hear about him, which is kind of cool that we're getting to capture him here uh as he starts into his career, Mr.
- 1:12SPEAKER_03: Jonah Finley.
- 1:14SPEAKER_03: Jake, you and I have talked about this episode for a while now, and I think it's important that we do this.
- 1:20SPEAKER_03: This is going to be a little bit of a preview to the Dead Pear Blast, and we have a very special event happening just ahead of that, the Dead Pear Pro Am.
- 1:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Jace.
- 1:30SPEAKER_04: It should be just an all-around collective good end of the week uh celebration.
- 1:35SPEAKER_04: Thursday will be for a great cause, and then hopefully everybody sticks around and shoots what fun you and Mr.
- 1:41SPEAKER_04: Roberts have set for him over the Friday, Saturday of it.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: Well, you know, it's we we try to do it a little better each time, right?
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: And we're still learning, but uh I don't know.
- 1:51SPEAKER_04: Definitely come a wall away since I found you in the cornfields of our Yeah, isn't that the truth?
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: But I don't know, man.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: Um, there's a lot happening in the sport right now, and I think an event like this where everybody can just come and have fun is is important, especially at the end of the year, you know.
- 2:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's what it's about.
- 2:09SPEAKER_04: It's about uh the the experience.
- 2:11SPEAKER_04: So you know again, food.
- 2:13SPEAKER_04: We're gonna finalize our menu for Friday and Saturday night next week.
- 2:18SPEAKER_04: And they'll they'll let you in on what it is, Jace.
- 2:21SPEAKER_04: But you still can't let the cat out of the bag.
- 2:23SPEAKER_03: Oh man, we always gotta keep secrets.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: But we've got uh you you guys coming in and setting targets.
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: It's gonna be a great week.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: I think so.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: And like I said, the main goal here is fun, right?
- 2:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're not gonna make up charity targets by any means, but at the same time, we're not gonna be I don't know, people get beat up all year by hard targets and traveling and all that.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: We just want an event that everybody can come to, have a good time, shoot something they're not used to shooting, and uh hopefully win some good money.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: And oh my gosh, tons of prizes were hanging out.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: So let's get down to the couple nuts and bolts of it.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: So, first of all, uh this event will be at Rocky Creek December 11th and 12th, uh, which is in Richburg, South Carolina, home of Mr.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: Jake Spengler now.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: Trappers are going to be provided.
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: Myself and Chad Roberts are setting the targets.
- 3:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, hopefully the big man can make it down.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: If he does, we'll let him set some stuff as well.
- 3:17SPEAKER_03: Check this out.
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: Clay Shooting USA will be on site to photograph the event.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: I'm not going to well, I might as well go ahead and let this cat out of the bag.
- 3:27SPEAKER_03: David Rudolovich is supposed to be filming and videoing and pictures and all that stuff.
- 3:33SPEAKER_04: Let's get a pool going, Jace.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: I I think we do it right now.
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: I say we just get a side pool going on.
- 3:40SPEAKER_03: I don't know what the how we set the over-under odds on him showing up are and how we divide this purse up, but some somebody will bet on him being there, and then they'll actually like go physically get him and make him show up just so he can win.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: So, no, there's gonna be some good press involved with it.
- 3:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, the tin can kettle corn trailer is gonna be on site.
- 4:01SPEAKER_03: I just checked with her today.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: Uh, she's excited about it, still planning on coming.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: And Jake, tell everybody about the cigar bar you've got plans for.
- 4:11SPEAKER_04: So I found a guide locally that we've done we've done the cigar thing before, Chase, right?
- 4:18SPEAKER_04: We've done it for regionals, we've done it for state chief.
- 4:20SPEAKER_04: It's always a big hit.
- 4:22SPEAKER_04: Um, and I thought just having that for this event, you know, paired with some tectonic would be top notch.
- 4:30SPEAKER_04: And it's just gonna be it's a what they I don't know, how do you describe it?
- 4:34SPEAKER_04: It's a bicycle with like a cigar lounge, not a big lounge, but yeah, a cigar cabinet, if you will, yeah on the back of it.
- 4:43SPEAKER_04: And those guys will be here for tasting stuff, hopefully.
- 4:46SPEAKER_04: And uh talking to shoes about what they're actually partaking in.
- 4:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: Again, just adding to the experience.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: Adding to the experience.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: Uh, speaking of the experience, so the Dead Parablast main event will be$25 back to class plus$1,250 added class purses courtesy of gun and trophy insurance for the main.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: Both of the 75 bird main event courses can be shot on the same day or cross Friday and Saturday.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: Uh, and like you said, Jake, if somebody is only available to come in on Saturday, go ahead and sign up for the event, but then give Rocky Creek a call, let them know, hey, squad me just on Saturday.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: I can't make Friday.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: We're also going to do a 50 Bird 5 stand and 50 Bird Super Sporting.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: Both of those are$10 back to class.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: We have the Fyoki Longbird Competition.
- 5:37SPEAKER_03: Ammo is provided by Fyoki.
- 5:39SPEAKER_03: Uh the daily purse is 50% back to the pot.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, 50% of your entry fee goes towards the pot, and then we'll do a daily on that.
- 5:48SPEAKER_03: We are now up over$12,000 in sponsor door prizes.
- 5:53SPEAKER_03: I mean, this is some really cool stuff.
- 5:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Jason, you worked your tail off for that stuff, buddy.
- 5:59SPEAKER_03: Well, and you know, but I I did, but at the same time, if it wasn't for the sponsors, you know what I mean?
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: I mean, thanks goes to them.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: Every single one of the dead pair sponsors is chipped in and stepped up, and it's gonna be really cool.
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: Dinner will be provided on Saturday night.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: Uh Taconic Distillery Cocktail Hour on both Friday and Saturday nights.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: We're gonna have the trophy girls who'll be on site on Saturday uh for pictures, and I think they're gonna help out with some maybe some 50-50 drawings and whatnot.
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: And uh we are trying, I am in talks right now with Mr.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: Ed Pretchell.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: We are trying to get make a break there for the event.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're working through some logistic things right now, but hopefully we will have him there for the event.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: Uh good stuff, man.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: Good stuff.
- 6:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's gonna like us, like I said, Jace, it's gonna be a good weekend, should be relaxing.
- 6:49SPEAKER_04: You know, you can't shoot a tether targets, but that's not what it's about.
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: It's about shooting quality targets on them.
- 6:56SPEAKER_04: Come in and join some people.
- 6:57SPEAKER_04: Like-minded people.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: And also, we're drawing for the the Kohler gun.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: Um the Kohler Dead Pair gun.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: We'll be drawing it at the event.
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: So make sure you're getting your tickets.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: I've talked to a bunch of people.
- 7:09SPEAKER_03: Oh man, I keep forgetting I gotta get tickets.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: Well, don't wait.
- 7:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, get them, get them while they're getting the good.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: Again, the links to that are right down in the show description.
- 7:18SPEAKER_03: It's on our new website, which by the way, Jake, have you checked out the new website?
- 7:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it looks great, Jay.
- 7:24SPEAKER_03: Oh man.
- 7:25SPEAKER_04: Functional.
- 7:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, extremely functional.
- 7:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, lots of cool stuff there.
- 7:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, like if you click on certain pictures, it takes you to certain pages and stuff.
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: Really cool stuff.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: Good way to interact too.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: There's uh there's a button on there you can click to be notified when new episodes or new content's out.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: We're gonna be working with uh JTEC to integrate Scorechaser.
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: Uh so you'll be able to link right off of the our website to tournaments that we've talked about talk about here on the show.
- 7:52SPEAKER_03: So lots of cool stuff coming with that.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, man.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, I don't know.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: Uh like I said, we're we're trying to do this big, we're trying to do it right.
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: Obviously, we don't have the funds that Jack Lynx does, but we still want to have a good a good event and and lots of fun with good people.
- 8:09SPEAKER_04: Well, well, and you and I have talked about it.
- 8:11SPEAKER_04: Some of these folks are missing something at like a 200, 300 person range.
- 8:15SPEAKER_04: That uh it's not such a rat race, if you will, right?
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: Slow down, enjoy the people, because that's what truly makes us work.
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: No, you're you're exactly right.
- 8:25SPEAKER_03: Jake, one thing I don't know, I think we talked about this on Friday.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: Are we gonna have like lunch available?
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: Like, will there be a food truck running there?
- 8:34SPEAKER_04: We talked there will be food available for purchase on Friday and Saturday for lunch.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: And then obviously the cocktail hour both nights and then dinner on Saturday night.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I mean this is gonna be a good time.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: Now, I have talked to all the sponsors.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: There's quite a few of them that are gonna try and be there.
- 8:54SPEAKER_03: They haven't, well, there's only been a couple that have 100% confirmed, but for sure Kohler's gonna be on site, obviously with the gun.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: We've talked to the folks at Ranger, Atlas, Rhino, Gunning Trophy, Midway is gonna be there.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, I mean, look, all the way down through the list, right?
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: We've we've talked to all of them, and most of them are gonna try and be on site.
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: That'd be good.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: That'd be a good time.
- 9:17SPEAKER_03: So, Jake, you by the way, folks, there is no tourney talk this week, but we do have a make a break update to get to, so let's do that right now.
- 9:27SPEAKER_03: Come on, Ed, fill us in.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: What's been going on on Make a Break?
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: Sure thing, Jason.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: We had an incredible US Open at Game Unlimited in Hudson, Wisconsin.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: We ran a top eight in both level one and level two with a guaranteed purse of 15,000 from Elite Shotguns.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: The competition was fierce.

- 11:28SPEAKER_00: On his third attempt, Shively chipped the Federal number one target but didn't realize it and shot it again.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: That opened the door for Birgett, and he capitalized on it, crushing a Master Class 6, and then a Browning 2 to become the Level 1 U.S.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Open Make-A-Break champion.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: In the level 2 matchups, it went like this.

- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Mike Saccone and Austin Keimstead ended up tied at the end of regulation play, 39-39.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: That forced a Rhinochoke 7 shootoff.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Austin led it off, and he and Socone proceeded to each hit six Rhinochoke 7s in a row.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Then they both missed two Rhinochoke 7s.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Then they each hit two more Rhinochoke 7s.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: And finally, in a record-setting 11th round, Keimstead missed, and Socone crushed the final Rhinochoke 7 for the third place victory.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: In the championship game, Anthony Matarice and Tim Turner went head-to-head.

- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Matarice followed with the Elite Shotguns 4 and got within one point of Turner, 32 to 33.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: At this point, each player had two pairs remaining, and both would call and hit a Federal Master Class 6 in their next pair.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: With the score at 40 to 39 and Turner in the driver's seat, he called and hit another Federal Master Class 6, leaving Matarice to call the Rhino Choke 7 for the tie and forced shootoff.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: However, Matarice missed the shot, making Tim Turner our level 2 US Open Make a Break champion.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: Remember, you can catch the action as well at official Make A Break on YouTube.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Back to you, Jason.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: What do you think, Jake?
- 14:24SPEAKER_04: It's really cool that you and Ed have kind of partnered together, Jace, because I don't know two people who love the game more and want to see growth more than the two of you.
- 14:34SPEAKER_04: So I think that's truly awesome.
- 14:36SPEAKER_03: I I appreciate that, Jake.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: I think it's I think it's kind of cool because you know Ed and I talked about this.
- 14:43SPEAKER_03: There's people, especially like in the lower classes, that get into the shoot-offs on Make or Break that are getting their name announced on a podcast that otherwise you wouldn't have heard from them, right?
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: You know, like we we think of these big tournaments, we think of all the pros at the top of the game and their names get thrown around a lot.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: Well, now all of a sudden you got a guy in, you know, maybe like B class or something that made the make or break shootoff and he's getting his name announced.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: You know, it's kind of cool.
- 15:08SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 15:09SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 15:10SPEAKER_03: Spreading the love a little bit.
- 15:13SPEAKER_03: Hey, listen, uh, I we are on schedule right now.
- 15:17SPEAKER_03: I've got to give Mr.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: Jonah Finlay a call.
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: So everybody sit tight.
- 15:20SPEAKER_03: We'll be right back.
- 15:23SPEAKER_05: The day all right, everyone.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: Help me welcome Mr.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: Jonah Finley.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: What's up, Jonah?
- 15:33SPEAKER_06: Thank you guys for having me on.
- 15:35SPEAKER_06: Really excited.
- 15:36SPEAKER_06: Thank you.
- 15:36SPEAKER_03: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: Well, listen, I I kind of alluded a little bit with Jake uh before we got you on here.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: I'm like, nobody's heard of this kid, but they're about to.
- 15:47SPEAKER_03: So which is kind of cool because we're getting you before you're famous.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: So uh so if you would tell everyone who you are, where you're from, and how you got started shooting sporting clays.
- 15:59SPEAKER_06: So obviously, my name is Jonah Finley.
- 16:02SPEAKER_06: How I got into sporting clays is kind of a long story.
- 16:06SPEAKER_06: Imagine that, a David kid with a long story.
- 16:10SPEAKER_06: But uh, but to summarize it, and that was one of the reasons why I was like so excited to kind of get on and kind of talk with you guys is because I'm really passionate about people.
- 16:22SPEAKER_06: I mean, obviously, if you ask anyone, the best part about our our sport is the people.
- 16:27SPEAKER_06: Yes, you know, absolutely and being being with your friends and experiencing our sport is one thing because it's really, really fun.
- 16:35SPEAKER_06: But it's another thing to have people that are experiencing it and doing it, but also sharing it.
- 16:43SPEAKER_06: And without people that are doing like you, having a podcast and sharing what sporting clays is with people that don't know very much about it, honestly, I would have never found sporting clays.
- 16:55SPEAKER_06: Um when I was younger, uh I started shooting like competition silhouette rifles um when I was like 12 and 13 years old through the NRA.
- 17:05SPEAKER_06: And I knew nothing about clay shooting or sporting clays or any of that.
- 17:10SPEAKER_06: I knew about skeet and trap through 4-H, but I had never seen anything about sporting clays.
- 17:16SPEAKER_06: It's not very big in my area.
- 17:17SPEAKER_06: So where hold on a second, we we skipped over that.
- 17:20SPEAKER_06: Where is your area?
- 17:22SPEAKER_06: In West what so I'm from West Monroe, Louisiana.
- 17:24SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 17:25SPEAKER_06: It's like the northeast part of Louisiana.
- 17:26SPEAKER_06: Gotcha.
- 17:27SPEAKER_06: And when I was about 16 or 17, I was sitting on the couch and I remember it so vividly.
- 17:33SPEAKER_06: I was with my dad, we were watching the outdoor channel, and a commercial came on for the PSCA.
- 17:40SPEAKER_06: And this was groundbreaking stuff for me.
- 17:42SPEAKER_06: First, I'd never seen sporting clays.
- 17:44SPEAKER_06: I had an interest in shooting shotguns.
- 17:46SPEAKER_06: I enjoyed hunting and like, you know, bird shooting, but there was nothing else available for me that at that time.
- 17:53SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 17:53SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 17:54SPEAKER_06: So we saw this commercial for the PSCA, and there was all kinds of different people up there shooting.
- 18:00SPEAKER_06: Like Gavin Miles is up there with like this high rib Krieg off, and Theo Ribbs was up there with like his popped collar, and Zach Keenbaum had the white framed pilas that I thought were so cool.
- 18:12SPEAKER_06: I'd never seen glasses like that.
- 18:14SPEAKER_06: And all these guys were shooting at night, and they would shoot the clays and they would explode.
- 18:18SPEAKER_06: And I saw it, I was like, that is the coolest thing ever.
- 18:21SPEAKER_06: Like, I've never seen anything like that.
- 18:23SPEAKER_06: Like, I and I told my dad, I remember I was like, I think I want to try that.
- 18:27SPEAKER_06: Like, where can we go and find that?
- 18:29SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 18:29SPEAKER_06: And so my dad literally got on the internet and he looked up, you know, sporting clays, you know, what is that?
- 18:34SPEAKER_06: And there was a range about one hour, you know, from our house.
- 18:39SPEAKER_06: And so we went and drove to this range.
- 18:41SPEAKER_06: I'd never done it before, and I shot, and I had just it was it was so much fun.
- 18:46SPEAKER_06: It was not not like anything I had done in rifle.
- 18:49SPEAKER_06: And we were on the way home, and um, I told my dad, I was like, I want to do this.
- 18:56SPEAKER_06: Like, I don't I don't want to shoot rifle anymore, I don't care about practicing it.
- 18:59SPEAKER_06: Like, I just want to I want to try to shoot clays.
- 19:01SPEAKER_06: And so we got we went to a sporting goods store and bought a Browning 725.
- 19:06SPEAKER_06: And my dad told me, he was like, Okay, you know, if if you really like this, and I remember this conversation that we had, he was like, if we're gonna try it and you really like it, let's go.
- 19:15SPEAKER_06: Let's try to find a big tournament.
- 19:17SPEAKER_06: Let's go, you can experience it, you can see it, and then from there you'll know, okay, it's something that you really want to do and you really want to invest in.
- 19:25SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 19:25SPEAKER_06: So the literally two weeks later, we get in we get on a plane and we flew to Tucson, Arizona for I think it was a Western Regional at Coyote Springs in Tucson, Arizona.
- 19:38SPEAKER_06: And I got there on a Tuesday, and we didn't know anything about the tournament.
- 19:43SPEAKER_06: We we were I registered for the main event, and I remember uh Casey Chase was actually there when we went to register, and it was win score at the time.
- 19:53SPEAKER_06: Score chaser didn't exist.
- 19:55SPEAKER_06: This was in 2017, was my first year.
- 19:57SPEAKER_06: So this was when I was 16, turning 17 years old.
- 20:00SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 20:01SPEAKER_06: And so we got there on a Tuesday, and Casey was like, Okay, well, you're registered for the main on Saturday.
- 20:07SPEAKER_06: Do you want to shoot anything else?
- 20:09SPEAKER_06: And we were like, What do you mean?
- 20:11SPEAKER_06: I I thought that was it.
- 20:12SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 20:13SPEAKER_06: And she was like, Well, this is actually uh North American fee task as well.
- 20:18SPEAKER_06: Or I could be wrong, it might have just been a 100 feet task event.
- 20:21SPEAKER_06: So she was like, You can shoot fee task, you can shoot super sporting, you can shoot five stand, you can shoot the prelim.
- 20:26SPEAKER_06: And I was like, uh yeah.
- 20:28SPEAKER_06: Like we're gonna shoot five times as much.
- 20:31SPEAKER_06: I was like, Yes, we'll do it.
- 20:32SPEAKER_06: So she signed us up like last second and put me in all the squads.
- 20:36SPEAKER_06: And we're about to finish registering, and she was like, Well, do you want to pay options?
- 20:41SPEAKER_06: And we were like, Okay, we don't know what that is.
- 20:43SPEAKER_06: And she was like, Well, basically it's you bet on yourself.
- 20:45SPEAKER_06: So if you win, you kind of get everyone else's money that they bet on.
- 20:48SPEAKER_06: And obviously, we're like, okay, we'll try it.
- 20:50SPEAKER_06: And I was in, I don't know if e-class still exists, but it was my you know, my second tournament ever.
- 20:56SPEAKER_06: So I was in e-class.
- 20:58SPEAKER_06: So we registered and I had an amazing experience.
- 21:01SPEAKER_06: Casey registered me with James Gilman and Kelby Senior and Patrick Bartel, I think it was.
- 21:09SPEAKER_06: Um, and they were so nice to me, and they were encouraging me and like giving me tips the whole time, like, okay, like in Fitas, you have to mount below the line and you can't move.
- 21:19SPEAKER_06: And when it comes out, you just you know pick up and shoot it.
- 21:22SPEAKER_06: And this one's come from over here, and this is a rapport and true.
- 21:26SPEAKER_06: And also I'll never forget.
- 21:28SPEAKER_06: Keep in mind where I'm from in Louisiana, you know, it's woods, right?
- 21:34SPEAKER_06: It's creeks and valleys and ridges.
- 21:37SPEAKER_06: And so we'll shoot orange clays and pink clays, but I had never in my life had I seen an all black clay.
- 21:44SPEAKER_06: And so we get to Tucson, and it's nothing but black clays, like in the sky.
- 21:49SPEAKER_06: So I was like, okay, this is crazy.
- 21:51SPEAKER_06: I remember like standing in the hoops, you know, four feet asked.
- 21:54SPEAKER_06: And so it was so different, and everything was so new and exciting.
- 21:58SPEAKER_06: I was just, I Such a blast.
- 22:01SPEAKER_06: It was so much fun.
- 22:02SPEAKER_06: And the week goes on, and this kind of like ties in to the rest of my story in shotgun shooting because I was standing at a make or break then in 2017, and I met a younger guy uh by the name of Hunter Barnes.
- 22:18SPEAKER_06: Hunter Barnes and David Barnes were from Abilene, Texas, and they were just complete strangers.
- 22:23SPEAKER_06: We just kind of ran into each other.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:26SPEAKER_06: And um, we kind of struck up a conversation and had a lot in common, obviously, like we all do in clay shooting.
- 22:33SPEAKER_06: And so we became friends.
- 22:35SPEAKER_06: Well, Sunday comes around.
- 22:37SPEAKER_06: I had shot every event and had so much fun.
- 22:41SPEAKER_06: And we go to a steakhouse there in Tucson.
- 22:44SPEAKER_06: And I remember we're sitting in the booth and we're about to leave the next day.
- 22:49SPEAKER_06: And David and Hunter asked me, they were like, Well, how did it, how did you do?
- 22:53SPEAKER_06: You know, like, like, how did it, how did it turn out?
- 22:56SPEAKER_06: And I was like, I don't know.
- 22:57SPEAKER_06: Like I we were in the clubhouse and saw like uh pages of people's scores and stuff, but I don't know, I I don't know how I shot.
- 23:05SPEAKER_06: And they were like, Well, you've got to look on win score.
- 23:07SPEAKER_06: And I was like, okay, what is that?
- 23:08SPEAKER_06: Like, I don't I don't know what that is.
- 23:09SPEAKER_06: And so I remember Mr.
- 23:11SPEAKER_06: David was sitting in the booth and his glasses on the bridge of his nose, and he's looking down on his phone and he's scrolling, and he went, Uh-huh.
- 23:18SPEAKER_06: Okay, fee task, uh-huh.
- 23:20SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 23:20SPEAKER_06: And then he looked up, pushed his glasses up on his nose, and he went, Finley's buying dinner.
- 23:25SPEAKER_06: And he turned his phone to me, and I'd won like$4,000, like$4,500.
- 23:30SPEAKER_06: So I'd won, I'd done really well in all the events, the fee task in the main and the prelim.
- 23:35SPEAKER_06: And so we got a big laugh out of it.
- 23:37SPEAKER_06: And I did super good.
- 23:39SPEAKER_06: And how Hunter and David kind of come into my shooting story is my freshman year of college in 2019, I went to LSU, and there's not a shooting team or anything at LSU, and there's not many, very many sporting plays ranges kind of in that area.
- 23:57SPEAKER_06: And I did uh civil engineering uh for my degree.
- 24:02SPEAKER_06: And for the way that school was for me, it was a lot of it was super time consuming, so I couldn't shoot very much.
- 24:08SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 24:08SPEAKER_06: So after after I finished my freshman year at LSU, I was kind of thinking about finding other places to go.
- 24:14SPEAKER_06: Maybe I could find somewhere that I could shoot clays more and still do engineering.
- 24:18SPEAKER_06: I didn't really know what to do.
- 24:19SPEAKER_06: So I called David Barnes and he ended up knowing someone in San Angelo, Texas, at Angelo State University, which is where they happened to have a shooting team that had an engineering program.
- 24:30SPEAKER_06: And he called Curtis Neal, who was the coach of that team, and kind of got me connected with him and got me um on a shooting scholarship there.
- 24:40SPEAKER_06: And I started shooting on that team and shot there until I graduated in gosh, 2022.
- 24:48SPEAKER_06: So it's been about three or four years now.
- 24:50SPEAKER_06: So without meeting them by chance, and without seeing that PSCA commercial by chance, I I don't think I would have ever known.
- 24:59SPEAKER_06: First of all, I wouldn't have shot in college and been shooting clays for the last eight years, but I would have never known about sporting clays without the PSCA.
- 25:06SPEAKER_06: That's very cool.
- 25:08SPEAKER_06: So it's pretty awesome.
- 25:09SPEAKER_06: I'm very passionate about people like you that are sharing our sport.
- 25:13SPEAKER_06: And you know, when I was trying to learn about shooting, it's all I was looking up YouTube videos and searching on the internet, but there was not very much.
- 25:20SPEAKER_06: So you doing the podcast and putting out content for people to find, I think is really important.
- 25:25SPEAKER_06: Because without that, I I would have never found it.
- 25:27SPEAKER_06: So I think it's really awesome.
- 25:29SPEAKER_03: I appreciate that.
- 25:30SPEAKER_03: Well, so now I'm to understand you took a lesson early on from Mr.
- 25:36SPEAKER_03: Radilovich, is that correct?
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: In 2020, December of 2020.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: You poor kid.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: So um David was telling me a little bit about this.
- 25:49SPEAKER_03: I think one of the most intriguing things David told me about you is the methods for practicing that you've came up with without even firing around.
- 25:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, can you tell us a little bit about that?
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: Because this is really this is really cool.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: And Jake's already got eyebrows raised over here, so he's like all ears.
- 26:07SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 26:08SPEAKER_06: So in 2023, or it might have been 22, time flies when you get out of school.
- 26:13SPEAKER_06: It's pretty crazy.
- 26:14SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 26:14SPEAKER_06: Um, I got out of college, and like I said, I did engineering.
- 26:19SPEAKER_06: So I took some computer coding classes and design classes.
- 26:23SPEAKER_06: And since I got out of school and I was working a lot more, and as everybody knows, shells are really expensive.
- 26:30SPEAKER_06: I was trying to find a way that I could practice while still working full time and just increase my ability, right?
- 26:40SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 26:40SPEAKER_06: And so with practicing without shells in your gun, you kind of have to know some background about how David how David taught me to shoot, right?
- 26:51SPEAKER_06: And so it's kind of in 10 words or less, or as simple as you can make it without going crazy around about, kind of like how David does.
- 26:59SPEAKER_06: But David provides a lot of like descriptive information.
- 27:03SPEAKER_06: It's it's pretty simple, right?
- 27:05SPEAKER_06: So your conscious mind can't think about two things at once.
- 27:09SPEAKER_06: Okay, so in sporting clays, you have the clay that's moving, and you have to watch the clay and respond with movement to determine where you're gonna put the gun or where you're gonna move your body to determine that forward allowance, right?
- 27:22SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 27:23SPEAKER_06: And so working with how David taught me to shoot, I was like, okay, how can I work with training my brain to learn how to move my body, which is in turn my gun, the same speed as a reaction as something that I'm looking at.
- 27:40SPEAKER_06: And so that's how I came up with this idea of this oscillating laser.
- 27:45SPEAKER_06: So I used this is when I'd first kind of got started working with ChatGPT on cranking out some basically computer code that I plugged into an Arduino board, which is just a little computer board.
- 28:00SPEAKER_06: I connected that to a little tiny motor, and on top of that motor, I put a laser pointer.
- 28:08SPEAKER_06: And you plug it into the wall, and all that it does is you you can sit it on your counter, laser shines on the wall, and it changes speeds and angles to where you can look at the laser and see how fast that laser is moving, and you just follow the laser with your gun.
- 28:27SPEAKER_06: While you're doing that, it's not necessarily focusing on putting a lead on the laser or doing certain moves with the laser, like a swing through or a pull away.
- 28:40SPEAKER_06: All that it is is just like I said, training your brain to say, okay, I'm looking at this thing and it's moving this fast.
- 28:46SPEAKER_06: Here's how I need to move my body.
- 28:48SPEAKER_06: So all I'm doing on that laser is looking at it and feeling how, okay, if it's say a teal, for example, which is just moving vertically, only up and down, how do my hips come forward and backwards?
- 29:03SPEAKER_06: How do my shoulders drop and rise?
- 29:05SPEAKER_06: And all I'm thinking about is how that feels, what muscles I'm using, how, okay, if I want to move with that laser right at the beginning, how much torque do I have to put in my arms?
- 29:17SPEAKER_06: How much torque do I have to put in my hips?
- 29:19SPEAKER_06: And I did that, you know, like I said, I'm working full time.
- 29:24SPEAKER_06: I can't go out and shoot as much as I did in college, which I shot a ton, uh, kind of to the kind of to the fault of my shooting coach.
- 29:32SPEAKER_06: I mean, he might even he might not even know how much I shot, but it was a lot.
- 29:35SPEAKER_06: I got to practice and it was an awesome program, but they have rules now to maximum boxes that you can shoot.
- 29:41SPEAKER_06: And I think I was kind of the culprit of that.
- 29:43SPEAKER_06: Um but it's all just so I can build confidence and not have to go outside and shoot at something and hit it, or go through boxes and boxes of shells trying to determine, okay, this is good technique and bad.
- 29:57SPEAKER_06: So I can go in, you know, late at night and stand in there and focus on how my body moves.
- 30:04SPEAKER_06: And the more that you're training your brain to focus on how your body feels while you're moving your gun with something that's moving, the less you have to consciously focus on that while you're actually shooting.
- 30:16SPEAKER_06: So it actually, it basically what it's doing is freeing up uh space in your brain to focus on what really, really matters, and that's looking at the clay.
- 30:26SPEAKER_06: So when you actually have a shell in your gun or you're in a competition, everything is 100% about visual data.
- 30:34SPEAKER_06: Okay, when I'm looking at that clay, your brain has to be like, you know, connected in thought to okay, what is it doing?
- 30:40SPEAKER_06: Where is it going?
- 30:41SPEAKER_06: What is its trajectory?
- 30:42SPEAKER_06: Is it slowing down and speeding up, or is it peaking and falling?
- 30:46SPEAKER_06: And do I need to increase my movement and my speed or not?
- 30:50SPEAKER_06: So by working with that laser, it kind of just the only thing, the only the simplest way that I can explain it is it puts you on autopilot.
- 30:58SPEAKER_06: You know, you're you're able to point your gun and not have to think about how fast to swing your gun or how to slow it down.
- 31:05SPEAKER_06: It really refines your mechanics so that when you're actually shooting, you're just on automatic.
- 31:10SPEAKER_06: So it really simplifies and clears up your mind.
- 31:14SPEAKER_06: And practicing in that way kind of changed how I shot and it built a lot of confidence in me because I knew, okay, my mechanics are really good.
- 31:23SPEAKER_06: So if I really focus on looking and seeing, okay, how fast it's moving.
- 31:28SPEAKER_06: And like I said, being connected in thought with just consciously focusing on how the clay looks, when the gun hits my cheek, I pull the trigger.
- 31:36SPEAKER_06: So it really simplifies things.
- 31:38SPEAKER_03: Well, this is very valuable information because you know, much like you, there's a lot of cheaters that have a career that prohibits either time on the range or maybe they don't have the finances to get out and burn a bunch of bottles.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: So, but you've obviously have found some great value in these techniques for training like this.
- 31:57SPEAKER_03: Um let me ask you this.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: Let's well, I'll tell you what, let's put some validation into these methods.
- 32:03SPEAKER_03: Uh, maybe even some people are thinking this is a little unorthodox training methods, but you've got some crazy, but you've had some pretty impressive results at major events without even firing the gun at you know, training days.
- 32:18SPEAKER_03: So now's your chance.
- 32:20SPEAKER_03: I want you to brag a little bit on what you've been able to accomplish.
- 32:23SPEAKER_03: I mean, seriously, because you know, if somebody listens to this is like, oh, this is crazy, but go ahead.
- 32:30SPEAKER_06: So so yeah, first of all, it is crazy.
- 32:34SPEAKER_06: It it makes no sense.
- 32:36SPEAKER_06: Like you to to say, okay, I'm not gonna physically shoot and it's gonna help me hit it with no, you know, when you're pointing at a laser on your wall and it's nine o'clock at night and you got sweat on your elbows, because you know, when you mount your gun and you're just shooting at a clay, you hold it up for like a second, and then you put it down, you eject your shells, and you reload.
- 32:58SPEAKER_06: So you're building a lot of stamina, but it doesn't make any sense.
- 33:01SPEAKER_06: And honestly, sporting clays in general doesn't like how can your brain automatically tell you how far to shoot in front of a moving object that is different every time?
- 33:12SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 33:12SPEAKER_06: You know, the clay might the thrower might throw it four foot high or four foot low.
- 33:16SPEAKER_06: So how do you calculate that?
- 33:17SPEAKER_06: So you're right.
- 33:18SPEAKER_06: It it doesn't make sense.
- 33:20SPEAKER_06: And as far as my results, it's hard to remember all of my wins, but I could tell you a lot about my failures, like and all my mess ups, you know.
- 33:30SPEAKER_06: And I have a YouTube channel and I talk about that a lot.
- 33:33SPEAKER_06: Like we are all really hard on ourselves, and you remember the bad times way more than the good.
- 33:40SPEAKER_06: And it's it's opposite of what you think, you know.
- 33:43SPEAKER_06: When I have had success, you have that that time of it just it changes what you think.
- 33:48SPEAKER_06: But I have had some success, you know.
- 33:49SPEAKER_06: I so last year with that's that's when I came out with that laser was last year, okay.
- 33:55SPEAKER_06: And I practiced twice uh physically.
- 33:58SPEAKER_06: I shot about 250 practice rounds, and um I won the Louisiana State five stand, went to the U.S.
- 34:06SPEAKER_06: Open and had a really good showing and feet ask on the first day, and then got so nervous on the second day I couldn't finish it out, so I didn't shoot super well.
- 34:15SPEAKER_06: Um, I think um I finished top five at Louisiana State in the main last year.
- 34:20SPEAKER_06: This year I won the five stand again in the state championship.
- 34:23SPEAKER_06: Um, I practiced again with physical shells very very little this year, and I finished with ties at the world championship.
- 34:32SPEAKER_06: I finished tied 11th.
- 34:34SPEAKER_06: So I shot 177 out of 200.
- 34:37SPEAKER_06: Um and uh let's see, I needed, I think I needed to hit five more, which is oh my goodness.
- 34:43SPEAKER_06: It's so frustrating.
- 34:45SPEAKER_06: As a as a as a as a shooter, you know, everybody always looks back and they're like, I cannot believe that I missed those.
- 34:51SPEAKER_06: If I could have hit just a few more, I would have been right there.
- 34:54SPEAKER_06: But I think for the super final, I think it was like 183 or 184 out of 200 would have put me right there for the super final.
- 35:01SPEAKER_06: And to come down on Sunday and be right there and look down and see Braxton Oliver like grinding.
- 35:08SPEAKER_06: And Wendell and David were right there, Richard Falls was right there, you see George Digwee driving around, like you know it's on.
- 35:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and it's a it's a serious element.
- 35:16SPEAKER_06: So it felt really good to be in it.
- 35:19SPEAKER_06: Like I think I shot a 59 out of 65 on the last day, and I needed to shoot 63 or 4.
- 35:26SPEAKER_06: So I was very, very close.
- 35:28SPEAKER_06: Well, David was some of my success.
- 35:30SPEAKER_03: David was telling me about a runner-up finish you had somewhere that was really impressive.
- 35:34SPEAKER_06: Um, I think runner-up and fee task.
- 35:37SPEAKER_06: Um I'm terrible, and that's it's so funny.
- 35:40SPEAKER_06: Like I said, I'm it's hard for me to ask about my successes because I don't I I truthfully I don't remember them as vividly as I remember losing Louisiana State on the last station, you know, right, or like coming down at the US Open on Fee Task, and I shot a you know a 23 on the third to last parkour.
- 36:00SPEAKER_06: And then the last one being right there and knowing, oh, okay, like, oh my goodness, is this it?
- 36:05SPEAKER_06: Like all of my training, is it coming to fruition and having to handle that?
- 36:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you know.
- 36:10SPEAKER_06: So I think I shot uh fee task at Browning Briley this year, and I shot a 91 and 93-1.
- 36:17SPEAKER_06: I don't know where I finished, uh, but I got to shoot with Brandon actually, and it was so much fun because he's really um intense and on it, and you know, he really wants to win.
- 36:28SPEAKER_06: So it was fun competing with him and uh shooting in that moment, you know.
- 36:33SPEAKER_06: And I don't know if I can't remember what the like I said, I think the finishing score was 93.
- 36:37SPEAKER_06: But that runner-up finish, not sure.
- 36:39SPEAKER_06: Could have been, I've been runner-up a lot, Jason.
- 36:42SPEAKER_06: A bunch.
- 36:44SPEAKER_06: But uh, I've been right there, and really that's what keeps me going.
- 36:49SPEAKER_06: Like when I think about like my success, you know, I don't think about like holding up the trophy.
- 36:56SPEAKER_06: You know, like my vision is always being there and competing in that moment and having a chance to win.
- 37:01SPEAKER_06: And that's what I so you asked me, like what I remember about the world championships this year, and it's that, you know, I didn't I could have focused on, you know, missing two on the second to last station and it, you know, losing me out of it.
- 37:14SPEAKER_06: But I just remember looking down the line and seeing, you know, Braxton was there and all the other people that had won.
- 37:21SPEAKER_06: And I was sitting right there, and that's what fulfills my training, you know, sitting in my room, pointing in the middle of the night, you know, just to stay in it, to stay connected to okay, I'm working on this, I'm training, I'm building my ability, I'll be right there.
- 37:37SPEAKER_06: I believe that I can be right there.
- 37:38SPEAKER_06: And so that's what I remember, like more than anything.
- 37:41SPEAKER_03: Well, I want to I want to get back into your training a little bit.
- 37:44SPEAKER_03: Did you have a question, Jake?
- 37:46SPEAKER_04: So that was an elaborate explanation of the first is that the first question, Jason.
- 37:51SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 37:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's a David kid for sure.
- 37:57SPEAKER_04: He's a David kid for sure.
- 37:58SPEAKER_04: So Jonah, how often do you compete?
- 38:02SPEAKER_06: So this year I shot Browning Briley, the World Championship, and Louisiana State.
- 38:09unknown: Okay.
- 38:10SPEAKER_06: So I've shot three tournaments this year.
- 38:12SPEAKER_04: And then since then lifetime year close to 30,000 registered though.
- 38:16SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 38:17SPEAKER_04: So are you taking a break?
- 38:18SPEAKER_04: Are you shooting big stuff?
- 38:21SPEAKER_04: So that's going to smaller stuff.
- 38:25SPEAKER_06: You know, so I shot, let's see, I shot a a fair amount leading up to college, and then moderately since I've been in college and out.
- 38:33SPEAKER_06: And really what I try to do, because I I think really psychologically, that's like kind of where the laser came from, is because I really like having this long duration of training and anticipation leading up to a tournament where I plan out, okay, these are the things that I want to do.
- 38:52SPEAKER_06: I want to practice on my laser and kind of build my fitness.
- 38:56SPEAKER_06: I, you know, run and work out to where I can try to be the best that I can be, kind of that quality over quantity mindset, basically.
- 39:06SPEAKER_06: So when I go, I try to go to bigger tournaments and really focus on those rather than traveling around and shooting a lot.
- 39:13SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 39:13SPEAKER_06: And especially now with work and just that is a part of it, being, you know, working and being out of school, but it's just kind of how I found I can focus the best and perform the best is when it's anticipated, you know.
- 39:29SPEAKER_06: So I definitely am not competing like every month, I would say.
- 39:33SPEAKER_06: I travel to uh Providence Hill if I want to go and shoot like a monthly register.
- 39:39SPEAKER_06: Providence Hill is about two hours from my house.
- 39:42SPEAKER_06: But other than that, I'll travel to kind of the regional tournaments or the world championships or nationals.
- 39:47SPEAKER_06: And so the national championship is the next tournament I'm going to.
- 39:50SPEAKER_03: So okay, uh like I said, I want to go back to your training here for a minute because the hardest thing for me to wrap my head around with this training method is trust.
- 40:00SPEAKER_03: And what I mean by that is when you train in the field and the methods and the mechanics work, you have the target breaking as an outcome, right?
- 40:08SPEAKER_03: That you kind of like build trust in your abilities and your mechanics.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: With your methods, there is no you don't get that uh I guess you could call it gratification of the target breaking.
- 40:19SPEAKER_03: So with your methods, is it a primarily a focus on the mechanics that's building the trust?
- 40:26SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 40:26SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 40:27SPEAKER_06: So I remember in let's see, 2020 and 21, what I do, because I'm not in tournaments a ton, I watch YouTube videos.
- 40:39SPEAKER_06: I've why I listen to your podcast and other people's podcasts.
- 40:42SPEAKER_06: And I remember someone getting on a shooting podcast and talking about grid, grid training, where you'll go and shoot crossers at 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 yards.
- 40:53SPEAKER_06: And I remember trying to do that, and it was really hard for me because I would start breaking the clay, and then I would say, okay, if this picture of this lead or whatever gets me to break it, I'll just try to repeat that.
- 41:07SPEAKER_06: And I could never hit 10 in a row when I backed up past that 30 or 40 yards, and it was really, really hard for me.
- 41:15SPEAKER_06: And so that reward of, okay, if I do this, then it'll break, is that exact distraction that I felt for me took me away from being able to move my gun really smooth and like hit the clay consistently.
- 41:29SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 41:29SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 41:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 41:30SPEAKER_06: So it does, when you remove, first of all, when you take a shell out of your gun, there's such little anticipation of what's going to happen.
- 41:39SPEAKER_06: You know, you don't, you're not anticipating the recoil, and you're holding your arms out in front of you for a longer duration of time pointing at that laser.
- 41:46SPEAKER_06: It's moving back and forth on the wall, and you're forced with no clut with no shell in the gun, you're absolutely forced to just focus on how your gun is moving and how your body's doing that.
- 41:56SPEAKER_06: And so it really makes you work hard on everything that leads you to where you want to be.
- 42:03SPEAKER_06: You know, it's less about like that doubt of, okay, am I in the right place?
- 42:08SPEAKER_06: Like, do I shoot now?
- 42:10SPEAKER_06: And more about like, okay, I'm always gonna be in the right place because I'm moving really smoothly and I see it.
- 42:16SPEAKER_06: So if I'm if I'm moving smooth and I'm focusing on what the clay looks like, it's time to pull the trigger and you know the result will come after that.
- 42:26SPEAKER_03: Very, very cool.
- 42:27SPEAKER_03: So okay, now you're you're young enough.
- 42:31SPEAKER_03: This is this is gonna be a an important question.
- 42:34SPEAKER_03: When a round doesn't go your way or it was a bad performance, is it a phone call to David, or is it more of a look in the mirror and trying to figure it out?
- 42:45SPEAKER_03: That's a really good question.
- 42:47SPEAKER_06: I think one of the things that I most appreciate about David, and it's kind of a product of who he is, as you know, like he's hard to get in contact of.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's that's the biggest understatement you've made so far on this podcast.
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: But go ahead, no, I'm sorry.
- 43:03SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, it's it's funny, but I think it's very applicable because I always thought that, and it made me want to prepare myself and train even more between the times that we got lessons and between the times that we spoke.
- 43:18SPEAKER_06: Because I feel like as an instructor, David respected me enough to let me alone.
- 43:25SPEAKER_06: You know, one of my friends told me, uh, my one of my friends is a uh flight instructor for private jets, and he teaches people to fly all the time.
- 43:33SPEAKER_06: And he told me something, he said, you know, a student comes to a master, the master gives the student the information, and it is the student's job to take it home and not only like learn it, but make it his own.
- 43:48SPEAKER_06: And I think that's a super important concept when you're trying to learn something from someone.
- 43:53SPEAKER_06: And so I always thought that David respected me and believed in me enough that he was like, okay, here's what I think you need.
- 44:00SPEAKER_06: To learn, I'm giving it to you.
- 44:02SPEAKER_06: And with David, it's like a word vomit.
- 44:04SPEAKER_06: Like, okay, you need to do this, you need to do this, you need to do this.
- 44:06SPEAKER_06: And I love that about him because when I first went to David, I was confused and like lost.
- 44:13SPEAKER_06: I didn't know what, because I would shoot 91, 92, 93.
- 44:17SPEAKER_06: And I always thought, well, why am I, what am I missing compared to the people that shoot 96 or 97?
- 44:24SPEAKER_06: Like, can you tell me that?
- 44:25SPEAKER_06: And then I'll just do that and do better.
- 44:27SPEAKER_06: And David was like, no, it's not really necessarily one thing.
- 44:32SPEAKER_06: And so by doing that, it gave me that ability to just take all that information and work on it myself.
- 44:40SPEAKER_06: And this, you know, focus more on that journey of, okay, if no other person is there, and I have, you know, YouTube, the internet, a podcast, and the time to dwell on it, just mull it over in my own time, how am I going to figure this out in my way?
- 44:59SPEAKER_06: And, you know, that's kind of where the laser came from.
- 45:01SPEAKER_06: And so I think doing that, relying on yourself and not looking at it like, oh, this might be wrong.
- 45:08SPEAKER_06: Like actually, if you show up with an answer that is wrong, but it's your own worked process, it's probably going to take you further than trying to replicate or be a mirror to what someone has given you.
- 45:22SPEAKER_06: You know, because the person, a lot of the pros, they've they have themselves have trained for 20 years, for 25 years, right on that process.
- 45:31SPEAKER_06: So they say, okay, here's what works for me.
- 45:33SPEAKER_06: If you do this on this clay, it's going to work.
- 45:36SPEAKER_06: But if you're trying to be a mirror to that, you're still using a part of what is theirs.
- 45:41SPEAKER_06: And I'm not talking about like rewriting a book and being different.
- 45:45SPEAKER_06: It's just about spending enough time in something to explore it, you know.
- 45:49SPEAKER_06: And when I started being flexible, you know, and realizing, you know, there's a freedom to being coached and also to learning.
- 45:59SPEAKER_06: It doesn't have to be this one thing, it doesn't have to be black and white.
- 46:03SPEAKER_06: You have to find a way to make it work for you and don't uh serve it like, you know, David knows this, and this is the way that it should be, so I can only do it this way.
- 46:13SPEAKER_06: You learn the concept and say, okay, this is why I moved this way, and this is why I need to rely on vision.
- 46:22SPEAKER_06: This is what this how this is how this technique works.
- 46:26SPEAKER_06: When you understand that concept, you can say, okay, I can apply it in a lot of different ways.
- 46:31SPEAKER_06: And so when you look at it from that framework and from that perspective, it opens up a lot of opportunity for you rather than being boxed in and just feeling like, okay, I can only do this or this.
- 46:42SPEAKER_06: And if it doesn't, it won't work for me.
- 46:44SPEAKER_06: And if it doesn't work for me, maybe I'm not cut out for it.
- 46:47SPEAKER_06: You know, because I think a lot of people, they search for that instruction or that tip or that key, and they're trying to constantly change when they never really see the good parts about themselves.
- 46:59SPEAKER_06: You know, and like, okay, really, what am I working with and what can I do?
- 47:02SPEAKER_06: And I think that's the most important part.
- 47:04SPEAKER_06: Like I saw that, I learned about the concepts, I understood it, and then David really motivated me to study myself and learn, okay, where are my my own strengths and weakness?
- 47:14SPEAKER_06: You know, he helps you see that and then turns you loose.
- 47:17SPEAKER_06: And so it was a very freeing thing.
- 47:20SPEAKER_06: David kind of letting me out on my own.
- 47:22SPEAKER_06: And I still believe, you know, yeah, it would help to have that guidance, but you're not gonna learn by somebody constantly guiding you.
- 47:32SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 47:32SPEAKER_03: Well, that's what I think.
- 47:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 47:35SPEAKER_06: But you need you're gonna need help.
- 47:36SPEAKER_06: Well, you know, I'm not sure.
- 47:37SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 47:37SPEAKER_06: I mean, it can be quicker.
- 47:39SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 47:40SPEAKER_06: That's the quickest shortcut.
- 47:41SPEAKER_06: But the thing about it is it is making something really stick and be as effective as it can be.
- 47:47SPEAKER_06: Because every all of all coaches, they've done it.
- 47:50SPEAKER_06: So they they truthfully do know and understand.
- 47:52SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 47:52SPEAKER_06: You know, so it's just about finding what works for you.
- 47:55SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 47:55SPEAKER_03: Well, Jake, David told me, he said uh that Jonah called him for another lesson, said, Man, I you know, I've did all the homework and you told me to do, and I've per I've perfected this move.
- 48:05SPEAKER_03: And David said, I'm sitting here thinking, there is no way in hell this kid has perfected this move and he hasn't even been out shooting, and then that's when the laser thing came about.
- 48:14SPEAKER_06: But that's that's a funny story as well.
- 48:17SPEAKER_03: Uh so uh Jake, you said you're you're motioning to me.
- 48:22SPEAKER_03: Did you have a question for Jonah?
- 48:23SPEAKER_04: So you talked about goals in your shooting career, Jonah.
- 48:27SPEAKER_04: You're I mean, you're a pretty cerebral guy from the 45 minutes.
- 48:32SPEAKER_04: Imagine that a David gave dog for 45 minutes.
- 48:37SPEAKER_04: What do you want to achieve?
- 48:39SPEAKER_04: Right?
- 48:39SPEAKER_04: Like what is you're 27 years old, right?
- 48:42SPEAKER_04: And you're not shooting a bunch.
- 48:44SPEAKER_04: You're shooting more than most 27-year-olds, I'd think, wouldn't you?
- 48:47SPEAKER_04: Trying to stay in it, exactly.
- 48:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 48:50SPEAKER_04: So career goals.
- 48:52SPEAKER_04: If you had to say, here's here's my top three, what are I?
- 48:56SPEAKER_06: So when I think about my career goals, you know, I've always loved shooting.
- 49:03SPEAKER_06: When I was like four or five years old, I saw the Disney adaptation of Robin Hood with the foxes, and that's gonna be crazy to say, but in that movie, the main character that plays Robin Hood shot an arrow and it's it hit the bullseye and split another arrow.
- 49:21SPEAKER_06: And like I I so vividly remember that because it that's what got me really wanting to shoot.
- 49:27SPEAKER_06: Like I wanted to do archery and rifle because of that.
- 49:31SPEAKER_06: And so when I was four and five and up to 10 years old, I shot my BB gun like every day in my backyard.
- 49:39SPEAKER_06: And if anyone knows, you know, you put the copper BBs in your mouth and you spit them down in the red rider.
- 49:45SPEAKER_06: And so I would go outside in our backyard and shoot bumblebees as they were flying around in the flowers.
- 49:51SPEAKER_06: Like that was I just loved shooting.
- 49:53SPEAKER_06: And when I started out shooting, like with my first lesson with David, I told him, you know, I was like, ugh, he asked me what my goals were, and I was like, I want to win a world championship, like I want to try to be the best.
- 50:04SPEAKER_06: And you know, we went from there.
- 50:06SPEAKER_06: That's a very honorable goal.
- 50:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 50:09SPEAKER_06: But as I went, as I've been doing it, and like you said, I'm 27 years old.
- 50:14SPEAKER_06: I shot in college, and it's hard for people to stay in our sport by its nature with the shells and your gun and traveling.
- 50:22SPEAKER_06: And the only thing that's kept me in it, and I've realized this, you know, I was on the last station at the World Championships, and I looked down the line and I saw Braxton, and he looked like he was like putting his life on the line.
- 50:38SPEAKER_06: He was fighting for his life, and he was just grinding, and David was shooting down the line for me, and Wendell was behind him, and Wendell had a like a cigarette in his finger and was pointing at the clays.
- 50:49SPEAKER_06: And so everybody was shooting in this competition.
- 50:52SPEAKER_06: And I realized I was like, I love it.
- 50:54SPEAKER_06: Like I felt like I didn't have this reaction, like, oh wow, this is a world championship and this is serious.
- 51:00SPEAKER_06: Like I had this like fulfilling moment where I was like, this is where I should be.
- 51:05SPEAKER_06: Like this is exactly what I want.
- 51:08SPEAKER_06: And I feel at home.
- 51:09SPEAKER_06: Like I don't feel out of place.
- 51:11SPEAKER_06: And so when I think about my goals, what fulfills me the most is the action of working towards that goal.
- 51:20SPEAKER_06: Like, do I believe that I can be the best?
- 51:23SPEAKER_06: Of course.
- 51:24SPEAKER_06: Do I have to be the best to continue going?
- 51:28SPEAKER_06: No.
- 51:28SPEAKER_06: Because and oh, I get emotional talking about it because it it's a part of my past.
- 51:35SPEAKER_06: It's a part of who I am.
- 51:37SPEAKER_06: You know, all of my memories.
- 51:39SPEAKER_06: I told someone this.
- 51:41SPEAKER_06: Um I went and shot my gun uh at Covey Rise in South Louisiana with one of my friends, and I told them, I said, you know, probably five out of the 10 top memories in my life are from a shooting range.
- 51:57SPEAKER_06: And it's not like me winning, you know, it's not the the victories.
- 52:04SPEAKER_06: It's moments where I had to be there for one of my friends to encourage them, you know, or someone was going through something really bad and they needed me there to support them, or just various things that you wouldn't necessarily think were about results, but just about being a person, you know, and all those things kind of have fit together in a puzzle to where it's like solidified both who I am and obviously who I want to be and how I want to keep going.
- 52:33SPEAKER_06: You know, I go to the state championship every year and I feel like it's mine to win.
- 52:38SPEAKER_06: And obviously everybody's really, really good, but I've dedicated myself as well.
- 52:42SPEAKER_06: So when you practice a lot, you do the work, you're like, okay, well, I should, I should have a victory, or I should do the best that I can.
- 52:49SPEAKER_06: So I should be at the top.
- 52:50SPEAKER_06: And there's a lot of unique emotions that come with that.
- 52:53SPEAKER_06: And this year at the state championship, I think I lost by three shots in the same deal.
- 52:59SPEAKER_06: I'm right there all the way to the end.
- 53:01SPEAKER_06: And ultimately, you know, I don't win.
- 53:04SPEAKER_06: I finish fourth.
- 53:05SPEAKER_06: And I have, let's see, probably four times I've lost, you know, the state championship and got second or third.
- 53:14SPEAKER_06: And as I've gone more in pursuing the sport, my reaction has changed to losing so much.
- 53:21SPEAKER_06: And so that is my goal.
- 53:23SPEAKER_06: Now, when I lost, I don't come away feeling dejected and like, oh, I want to quit.
- 53:28SPEAKER_06: Like I did all this work and I didn't get my vision, I didn't get my goal.
- 53:33SPEAKER_06: Now it's like I feel so much more present and in the moment and realizing like this is amazing.
- 53:38SPEAKER_06: I'm right there and I don't even know how I'm shooting that.
- 53:41SPEAKER_06: It's blowing up and I'm shooting it on the way up.
- 53:43SPEAKER_06: This is amazing.
- 53:44SPEAKER_06: And like competing in that last moment, it's way more fun and fulfilling.
- 53:48SPEAKER_06: And so I think that's my goal is to keep going.
- 53:51SPEAKER_06: You know, the more that I think about the world championship and you know, being the best, the more I worry that I'm I'm projecting too far forward and I'm skipping over what is the best part.
- 54:05SPEAKER_06: And that is what's happening now.
- 54:07SPEAKER_06: You know, like what if, what if I win the world championship and I, you know, I hold the trophy up over my head and it's not what I thought?
- 54:15SPEAKER_06: What if my my friends aren't there or I I win and then what happens the next day?
- 54:20SPEAKER_06: You know, what if I spend so much time anticipating and focusing on that moment that I forget about what's happening right now and it could be the most fun that I ever have in shooting.
- 54:31SPEAKER_06: You know, being 27 and trying to hold on to my past and that this identity that I've made of shooting that has built who I am, you know, and I realize that and I'm like, I want to enjoy it right now and I want to apply myself.
- 54:48SPEAKER_06: I want to, I want to book a tournament two months out and go run in the afternoons and think about being there and realizing my ability.
- 54:57SPEAKER_06: You know, if I can do as good as I can, I think it's gonna take me uh to being at the top.
- 55:02SPEAKER_06: And so that's what I think about.
- 55:03SPEAKER_06: That's a long way again, that's a long way around, but that's what I think about when I think about my goals.
- 55:08SPEAKER_03: That's awesome.
- 55:09SPEAKER_03: Well, Jonah, uh last little set of questions here.
- 55:12SPEAKER_03: You've listened to the show.
- 55:14SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, with new shooters on here, we do a rapid fire.
- 55:17SPEAKER_03: So if you want, let's run through that real quick.
- 55:20SPEAKER_03: Tell everyone uh what gun you shoot, make and model.
- 55:23SPEAKER_06: So I shoot a Kohler Max Light, uh 32-inch barrel.
- 55:29SPEAKER_06: It has stock regular wood on it that got uh bent by stock fitter to have a little bit of twist and drop on it.
- 55:38SPEAKER_06: I shoot uh modified, I improve modified chokes, but currently I'm waiting on a parazzi to be made and it should be done in about two months.
- 55:48SPEAKER_03: Well, see, that's um everything was going up for you there, and then your story just went backwards.
- 55:53SPEAKER_03: No, I'm just kidding.
- 55:54SPEAKER_03: I'm just I'm just kidding.
- 55:55SPEAKER_03: So do you shoot factory chokes or aftermarket?
- 55:58SPEAKER_06: The I shoot the factory chokes that came with my gun.
- 56:00SPEAKER_03: What and what's your go-to constriction?
- 56:03SPEAKER_06: I'm on, so I they say 25 on the sides.
- 56:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 56:07SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 56:07SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 56:08SPEAKER_03: Uh what ammo do you shoot?
- 56:10SPEAKER_03: What brand?
- 56:10SPEAKER_03: What recipe?
- 56:11SPEAKER_06: I go all around trying to find the perfect combination of something that's going to give me a smoke ball, but not really kick me.
- 56:19SPEAKER_06: So I shoot actually, I shoot a lot of 1145 ounce and I eight, uh, like Remington, the Remington STS, because I love how hard the hull is.
- 56:28SPEAKER_06: It's a good shell.
- 56:28SPEAKER_06: It's really slick and it kicks out super easy and it hits really hard and doesn't kick.
- 56:33SPEAKER_06: But I've been shooting out uh one ounce.
- 56:35SPEAKER_06: Let's see, uh B, uh 1250, one ounce 1250 too.
- 56:39SPEAKER_03: Very good shell as well.
- 56:40SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 56:42SPEAKER_03: Um, and are you a seven and a half or eights guy?
- 56:44SPEAKER_06: Or honestly, I like to shoot eights.
- 56:47SPEAKER_06: Because I'm my chokes are tighter, I like more BBs.
- 56:51SPEAKER_06: I don't really notice the distance it harming me or anything.
- 56:54SPEAKER_06: And because my constriction is so tight, I feel like it kind of washes out.
- 56:58SPEAKER_06: So I shoot a lot of eight shots.
- 56:59SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 57:00SPEAKER_03: Uh glasses.
- 57:01SPEAKER_03: What brand glasses do you wear?
- 57:03SPEAKER_03: Pila.
- 57:04SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 57:05SPEAKER_06: I think they're the Outlaw X7s, I believe.
- 57:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 57:08SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 57:09SPEAKER_03: Uh, we need to we need to get you to try a pair of the new Ranger Hyper Shots.
- 57:13SPEAKER_03: I want to try them.
- 57:14SPEAKER_03: I heard about it on your last episode.
- 57:16SPEAKER_03: They're awesome.
- 57:16SPEAKER_03: Uh with the React lenses, they're unbelievable.
- 57:19SPEAKER_06: Um I gotta get to the Dead Pear Blast and we'll we'll try some out and get to see.
- 57:24SPEAKER_03: See that you see there, Jake?
- 57:26SPEAKER_03: I just got a big thumbs up from Jake.
- 57:27SPEAKER_03: Um the man is now speaking our language.
- 57:30SPEAKER_03: Um what about your ears?
- 57:32SPEAKER_03: What do you wear for ear protection?
- 57:34SPEAKER_06: I wore some uh custom molded earplugs for a while, but actually with my YouTube channel that I have, I have a little camera that mounts on my earmuffs, and I've been using that.
- 57:45SPEAKER_06: I use a little uh Go 360 camera that mounts kind of where my right ear is.
- 57:50SPEAKER_06: So I've been wearing earmuffs lately.
- 57:52SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 57:52SPEAKER_06: Uh, and really liking that because it doesn't hurt my ear and fits around, and it holds my glasses on.
- 57:57SPEAKER_06: So that's what I've been using, just some over-ear earmuffs.
- 58:00SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 58:00SPEAKER_03: Are you a vest or shellback guy?
- 58:03SPEAKER_06: Vest.
- 58:04SPEAKER_03: Uh brand.
- 58:05SPEAKER_03: Castellani.
- 58:06SPEAKER_03: Castellani.
- 58:07SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 58:08SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 58:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then we ask everyone what's in your bag.
- 58:11SPEAKER_03: We're looking for that oddball, lucky rabbit's foot, something nobody would be privy to.
- 58:17SPEAKER_06: Uh pink Himalayan salt.
- 58:20SPEAKER_06: Um, if I'm shooting and it's been a long round and I feel like I'm uh you know, sweating a lot, getting tired, I'll do a pinch of the pink Himalayan salt under my tongue, let it dissolve, and it gives you superpowers.
- 58:34SPEAKER_06: You know, uh scientifically proven, I can't describe it, but that's my oddball thing.
- 58:38SPEAKER_06: Do a little salt under my tongue for the uh the sodium.
- 58:41SPEAKER_06: That's my little secret.
- 58:43SPEAKER_03: Well, we're gonna have to investigate this, Jake.
- 58:45SPEAKER_03: I think somewhere along the line, David dated this kid's mom.
- 58:49SPEAKER_03: And this is wild.
- 58:51SPEAKER_04: This is wild.
- 58:52SPEAKER_06: This is we're talking about you with migraines, it'll help all everything again.
- 58:56SPEAKER_04: Talk to the good card.
- 58:57SPEAKER_04: I don't disagree with him, Jace, but yeah.
- 59:02SPEAKER_04: David and Jonah Hill or Jonah Finley went into a bar.
- 59:06SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 59:06SPEAKER_04: They never returned.
- 59:07SPEAKER_03: They never returned.
- 59:08SPEAKER_03: They never returned.
- 59:11SPEAKER_03: Jonah, do you have any sponsors?
- 59:12SPEAKER_03: Anybody you want to thank that's helped you along the way?
- 59:15SPEAKER_06: No sponsors other than my parents at the beginning.
- 59:22SPEAKER_06: And and well, honestly, you could say Curtis Neil at Angelo State, the clay shooting team there.
- 59:27SPEAKER_06: It's called the Rams Clay Target team.
- 59:30SPEAKER_06: He's probably the first person that ever, you know, called me up and said, Jonah, I've you know looked at your shooting, but you know, we want you to be a part of our team and set that up.
- 59:39SPEAKER_06: And there's so many donors for Angelo State there at the shooting team.
- 59:43SPEAKER_06: Uh, that was an amazing program.
- 59:45SPEAKER_06: And so he definitely supported me.
- 59:46SPEAKER_06: That's awesome and kept me going, you know, because it's so hard to stay as you're getting older in our sport.
- 59:52SPEAKER_06: So things like that are just amazing.
- 59:54SPEAKER_03: Very, very, very cool.
- 59:56SPEAKER_03: Well, we hope to see you at the Deadpool Blast.
- 59:58SPEAKER_03: And if you're definitely going to be there.
- 59:59SPEAKER_06: I'm coming.
- 59:59SPEAKER_06: I'm coming.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_03: Oh, perfect.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_03: Text me your shirt size.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_03: I'll have you a deadpo shirt there.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_03: Awesome.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_06: Thank you.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_03: But no, we've enjoyed having you, and um, we appreciate the time you spent with us this evening.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_03: Everyone, please stick around.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_03: Jake and I have a very big announcement about the pro am.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_03: But Jonah, thank you.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_03: Thank you very much for joining us.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_03: We appreciate it, buddy.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_03: Thanks for having me on.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_03: Awesome, thanks.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_04: Jonah, no pleasure, buddy.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_03: Well, Jake Spangler, what do you think, buddy?
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_03: Jonah Finley.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_04: What a guy.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_04: You can definitely tell him and David have spent some time together.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_03: You can tell they've spent too much time together, yes, that's for sure.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_03: But uh no, what what a good kid.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_03: I'm excited to see where he goes.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, if he's already shooting scores like that at 27 and only been shooting for six years.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's uh hopefully he can stay in it.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_04: Like you said, like that's his goal is to stay in the game.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_03: You know what I should have asked him?
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_03: I want to know if he's gonna patent that little robot thing he built for training at home.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_03: That's wild.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_03: Holy cow.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_03: So listen, everyone, we we've talked or we alluded to it a couple of times about the Dead Pear Pro Am.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_03: Uh now, what this is, this is gonna be December 10th, which is a Thursday, right ahead of the Dead Pearl Blast at Rocky Creek.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_03: And it's basically shoot for or shoot with a pro for a day.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_03: Kind of like if you've ever been to a kids and clays event, it's formatted the same way.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_03: 100% of the proceeds uh above expense goes to the Midway USA Foundation, where they will match dollar for dollar with the funds going directly to youth shooting endowments.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_03: Um, this is uh our way for the dead pair to give back.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_03: We are not collecting any money from this.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_03: Jake Spangler's not collecting, Rocky Creek's not collecting any money from this.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_03: This is all the proceeds are going to Midway USA Foundation.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_03: Uh the way this is gonna work, four man squads, that's one pro shooter and three paid shooters.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_03: That's a hundred-target event.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_03: Ammo is provided, golf carts provided, lunch is provided.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_03: We're gonna have salon auctions, rifles, a cigar bar, uh, we'll have some cocktails, sponsorship packages, and every donation made is tax deductible.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_03: Individual spots are available, but they're getting few and far between.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_03: Am I right, Jake?
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_03: I mean, we got teams filling up quick.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the guys are out there working hard trying to get this thing full.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_04: It should be good, Jace.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_04: You know, I uh when I came into the business, I started at Out Creek and the Boomer and Syotin Foundation she did something similar, right?
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_04: And it started small.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_04: But then those guys grew it to something big and it and it, you know, boomer had a lot to do with research with cystic fibrosis.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_04: This is just something that's near and dear to me and you, and it should be to all of us, right?
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_03: So well, it's the future, I mean it's secures the future of shooting sports and it secures the Jonah families of the world, right?
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_03: So there are gonna be some individual spots available and there is sponsorship opportunity in this.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_03: And also, I spoke with Zach over at Midway USA Foundation before we got on a call tonight, Jake.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_03: If you would like to help out, but you cannot be there to participate.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_03: There is gonna be um a spot where you can go to the link and you can donate and pay for uh a spot for a youth shooter, right?
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_03: So in other words, you donate the money and we give that spot to a youth shooter.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_03: Um, we you know, we'll do a random draw or something, we'll have some kind of contest or something once we know how many spots are available, uh, and we'll give that away to a youth shooter.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_03: So sponsorship packages are available.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_03: Uh, if you're a corporation, you want to buy a team to put together, that's available.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_03: Real simple, real easy.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_03: All you got to do is go right down in the show description, click on the link to Midway USA Foundation.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_03: When you go to their page, click on latest news, and you scroll down and you'll see the event.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_03: There's contact information there, uh, ways you can get in touch with either myself, Jake, or Midway USA and be a part of the event.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_03: I can tell you this, I'm not gonna sit here and name names, but the list of pros is comprised is comprised of world champions, national champions, regional champions, and state champions.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:04:20SPEAKER_03: This is not just, you know, these are all pro shooters, okay?
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_03: This is gonna be a good opportunity, uh, right ahead of the dead pro blast to come get some good coaching, all why benefiting youth shooting.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_03: We're putting a lot into this.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_03: Jake and I are a lot of our own money, our own time.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_03: We're investing into this, and it's we believe it's for the best cause going right now in shooting.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_03: Midway USA is gonna do half a billion dollars this year to youth shooting, and this is our little nugget that we can contribute to it.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_03: I know the folks from Midway are gonna be there, they're gonna be present and accounted for the styling aux and stuff.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, we listen, we've got some really cool stuff that's gonna be included in that.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_03: Um, and as time goes on, we get a little closer to the event, we might be able to announce what some of that style and oxen stuff is.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_03: If you can't attend, I really don't like doing this, but if you can't attend and you want to bid on something, um, we might be able to do a phone-in bid on it on a couple of items.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_03: But we really would like to see you there.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_03: And of course, a lot of these folks are gonna stick around and shoot the dead pair blast.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_03: And we hope that if you're gonna attend this event, you'll do the same thing.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_03: Jake, am I missing something?
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_03: Did I forget something about the event, brother?
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_04: No, you didn't leave me anything to say other than come out and see us at the DeadPair Pro in, right?
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_04: Links in the show description, right, Jason?
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_03: Yes, sir.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, like I said, the Midway USA link is down there.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_03: That's all they need.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_04: No, you did a fantastic job there, my friend.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_03: And I and I gotta say a very big thank you to the pros that have already agreed to do this.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're they're spending their money and their time.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_03: To come and and work with the folks that are going to be attending the event.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_03: It's it's really kind of cool because unlike a one-on-one lesson, you know, you got a coach that's working with a group, you could learn something that they're telling the next guy, you know, when they're not working with you.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_03: So it'd be really cool for you.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_03: Um it's gonna be money well spent just like a lesson.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_03: And these pros, like I said, they're spending their own dime to get there, they're taking a day away from their coaching.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_03: Look, some of these guys make upwards of$300 an hour.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_03: And for them to travel across country and come do this, I can't thank them enough.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_03: From the bottom of my heart, I really appreciate those guys and gals.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_03: So thank you very much to them.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_03: Jake Spangler, we say it each and every week.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_03: Take someone new shooting, take them to a tournament, and by gosh, we hope they come to the Dead Pearl Blast and the Pro Amp.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, buddy.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_04: I mean, you nailed it, Jason.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_04: Take somebody new shooting.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_03: Yes, sir.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_03: That's the only way we're gonna grow this sport.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be grassroots, it's gonna be us that does it, so why not be a part of it and be proud of it?
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_04: That's right.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_03: We have gone long again this week.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_03: It seems like we have a day.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_03: I know, right?
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_04: It it was good, Jace.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_04: It was all good.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I and I appreciate you joining me, Jake.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_03: I know you you uh you had to run late.
- 1:07:25SPEAKER_03: Would you have a corporate outing?
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_03: Is that what was going on?
- 1:07:27SPEAKER_04: It's the weather's starting to get nice in South Carolina, so outings are starting to happen.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_04: Uh couple more weeks, baby, and we might not be in the in the I 90s.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_03: Oh, I see.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_03: Hey, speaking of which, if you had to guess, what's weather gonna be like around that time of the year this year?
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_04: Hopefully, hopefully 70 during the day, 65, 70 degrees.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_03: That'd be awesome, man.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_03: Blue jeans and a shirt, and and at night you might need a hoodie.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and if you're around if you're around Rocky Creek in the evenings, there's always going to be a fire on the pavilion.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_03: Yes, absolutely.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_03: Hey, speaking of which, they can get over to the dead pear swag link on our uh at the deadpear.com and get them a hoodie, right?
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_04: Might need one of those if it's 55 degrees at night.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_03: And you're gonna need your cool dead pear shirt to shoot in, right?
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_03: So get over there and get you a hat, get you a shirt, get you a hoodie, or one of the big frig coolers that's available now.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_03: By the way, I did talk to the folks at Big Frig.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_03: They're waiting on some of the coolers to be made in a different color, so but they're coming.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_03: They'll be available here in the next week or so.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_03: Get over and check it out.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_03: Jake, thank you again, buddy.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_03: Really appreciate you joining us tonight.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_03: Thank you for everything you do for us.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_04: As always, thanks to you, Jace.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_04: You know, like like Jonah alluded to, you guys are owed a huge debt of service.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_03: Well, I appreciate that.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_03: It's uh it's a labor of love.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_04: It absolutely is.
