- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37I'm just thinking about all the times that we run into a
- 0:40complicated or difficult situation, a circumstance that
- 0:46seems like a mountain that we can't get over or can't move.
- 0:50And how many times do we look into the Word of God, which
- 0:55gives us an assurance that Jesus is there with us, but not only
- 1:00that, He will give us evidence that he's with us?
- 1:05The Easter season is the single most joyous time of the year for
- 1:10those of us who call ourselves followers of Jesus.
- 1:13It's the time of year when we celebrate the resurrection of
- 1:17Jesus. The grave could not hold him.
- 1:20The tomb was found to be empty. All that God had said about the
- 1:24coming Messiah was fulfilled during this time of year.
- 1:29Today, Pastor Lewis continues unpacking the story of the
- 1:32resurrection, highlighting the evidence of the resurrection as
- 1:36a way for us to have increased faith and trust in God.
- 1:41Now here's Pastor Lewis in Matthew chapter 28 with today's
- 1:45edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:48This Angel, he, he's giving them an invitation now, an invitation
- 1:52to come and validate what he just said.
- 1:56So they go when they look in and they see, well, he's not there.
- 2:00He's not there. I've never been to Israel, I've
- 2:04never been to Jerusalem. I've never been to this tomb,
- 2:07but I know many people who have my pastor have a Clark, you've
- 2:11been to this tomb, correct? So and I know many people have
- 2:15been there several times, several times.
- 2:20So I want to ask a question because I know that when the
- 2:25people that I asked when they were there at this tomb and they
- 2:28said, well, you want to go over to Jerusalem, I said I don't
- 2:31need to. You were there.
- 2:32You said he wasn't in there. You said he wasn't there.
- 2:40So I believe he wasn't there. The Bible says he wasn't there.
- 2:43That's two witnesses. Pastor Clark, when you went to
- 2:48Jerusalem, when you went to the tomb, when you looked in, was he
- 2:55there? I have no reason to have to go.
- 2:58My pastor said he wasn't there, He's not there, and indeed he is
- 3:04going before you into Galilee. There you will see him.
- 3:08Behold, I have told you. And he did.
- 3:11He told him just that. Jesus told them on the last time
- 3:16in the book of Matthew when he told him that he was going to be
- 3:20killed and he was going to be buried and he was going to rise
- 3:24again. He said, but I will go before
- 3:26you in Galilee. If you go back to Matthew
- 3:30chapter 26, which is a should be just a couple pages over and
- 3:34verse 32 and I'm going to start reading here in verse 31.
- 3:39Then Jesus said to them, all of you will be made to stumble
- 3:43because of me this night. For it is written, I will strike
- 3:47the shepherd, meaning that he was going to be stricken,
- 3:52beaten, He's going to suffer and he's going to die, and the sheep
- 3:57of the flock will be scattered. And that's exactly what they all
- 4:00did when he was being beaten. They ran, they left them.
- 4:04Even Peter who said that he wouldn't.
- 4:07Verse 32 But after I have been raised, I will go before you to
- 4:14Galilee. So just like the Angel said,
- 4:16look just like he said, just like he told you, OK, He's going
- 4:21to go before you into Galilee. So so far, everything that Jesus
- 4:24has said was going to happen is coming to be verse 8 and 9
- 4:30Martha do 10/2. He says so they went out quickly
- 4:36from the tomb with fear and great joy and they ran to bring
- 4:41his disciples word. So let's stop there for a
- 4:44second. So they left with both fear and
- 4:48joy. I I, I can certainly understand
- 4:51that. And you just saw this Angel
- 4:53sitting on a the stone of this tomb that it probably would have
- 4:58taken about 30 men plus a machine to move of some type.
- 5:03But this Angel was there by himself.
- 5:05But the other accounts actually show that there were more than
- 5:08one Angel there. We don't know exactly how many
- 5:10angels were there, but there were more than one Angel.
- 5:12There was more than one Angel there.
- 5:14But this Angel was sitting there on this on a stone as in victory
- 5:18over this thing. This is not important.
- 5:20You know, he's sitting there on a stone.
- 5:23So I would imagine because everybody that sees an Angel,
- 5:27the first thing the Angel has to say to them is fear.
- 5:29Not because it's so horrific to see an Angel, so terrifying to
- 5:33see the face of an Angel. So he says, so he says here that
- 5:38he, they left there with fear in that fear, I'm sure from the
- 5:42fact of having that encounter with the Angel, but also fear,
- 5:45the fact that they don't know where their Lord is.
- 5:49They don't know where their Lord is.
- 5:50The Lord is not here in this tomb and we don't know where he
- 5:53is. I'm sure there's fear there, but
- 5:56also great joy because the Angel has told them that he is risen,
- 6:02so they have the hope that he is alive.
- 6:05He's alive. So they ran there with great
- 6:08joy. But once again, the Providence
- 6:11and the foreknowledge of God to know that I need these women to
- 6:16be convincing witnesses for me. I need them to have a conviction
- 6:22about the fact that Jesus Christ has risen and not just take it
- 6:26from hearsay, but I need them to know.
- 6:29So look at what happens in verse 9.
- 6:32So as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met
- 6:36them, and he said, rejoice. So they came and held him by the
- 6:43feet and worshipped. Then Jesus said to them, do not
- 6:47be afraid, go and tell my brethren to go to Galilee, and
- 6:52there we they will see me. So they got the testimony from
- 6:59the angels, but then the Providence and the foreknowledge
- 7:03of God, they knew that their hearts had to be settled on
- 7:07this. So as they were going on the
- 7:09way, Jesus appears to them and he meets them on the way.
- 7:20I'm just thinking about all the times that we run into a
- 7:23complicated or a difficult situation, a circumstance that
- 7:29seems like a mountain that we can't get over or can't move.
- 7:33And how many times do we look into the word of God, which
- 7:37gives us an assurance that Jesus is there with us, But not only
- 7:43that, he will give us evidence that he's with us.
- 7:48He will either send somebody with a with a word of
- 7:51confirmation or send help from somewhere, or he will turn the
- 7:55situation around supernaturally that we can't even explain.
- 8:00He meets us right where we need him, where he met then and they
- 8:07were able to see that he was alive.
- 8:10Man, what that must have felt like, What that must have been
- 8:13like. You're crying one night.
- 8:16You're crying Friday night. You're crying all day Saturday.
- 8:19I'm sure they cried missing their savior early morning
- 8:23Sunday on the way to the tomb. They're probably crying carrying
- 8:26their spices. And then they get there and the
- 8:29Angel said he's not there. Whoa, wait a minute.
- 8:31He's not here. Hell, he's risen.
- 8:34Oh, OK, OK, you say so and I'll go tell him like you told me to.
- 8:39But then on the way they see Jesus standing there and he says
- 8:43rejoice, He doesn't have to say anything else, just rejoice,
- 8:49rejoice. So the Bible says that they
- 8:53grabbed him, they held on to his feet and worship him.
- 8:57Which also deals with another issue that those who are want us
- 9:02to deny Christ and those who want us to refute his deity and
- 9:08want us to refute the fact that he was not only man but he was
- 9:11also God. They said that he grabbed him by
- 9:15the feet, which means this was not a phantom, this was not an A
- 9:19figment of their imagination, this was not a just a spirit,
- 9:25this was Jesus. Not only did they recognize him,
- 9:29but they were able to touch him. They grabbed him by the feet and
- 9:34they worshipped him. Glory to God.
- 9:38So now they're leaving there and they're going there with a heart
- 9:42filled with peace, a heart filled with joy.
- 9:47They can't wait to get to the apostles.
- 9:49Now I know he's alive. So these women become the first
- 9:55evangelist and tell the true story about Jesus Christ was
- 10:01dead and now he's alive. So they go and they and, and he
- 10:06says go and tell, go and tell. This is the second time he said
- 10:08that. He also said that back in verse
- 10:117. He said go and tell, go quickly
- 10:14and tell his disciples. And then over here Jesus tells
- 10:18them go and tell, go tell it, go tell it.
- 10:22We have the truth. He revealed the truth for us.
- 10:26We see the truth, go tell it. We should go tell it to share it
- 10:32with other people. He gave it to us for us to do
- 10:35that. So now looking at these next few
- 10:39verses, verse 11 through 15, we're going to take it all
- 10:42together. Now while they were going,
- 10:46behold, some of the guard came into the city and reported to
- 10:51the chief priests all the things that had happened.
- 10:55Now I just want to say this. For generations upon generations
- 10:58upon generations upon generations, Satan has
- 11:00consistently try to use people to defy the name Jesus, to deny
- 11:13the name Jesus, and to deny the truth of Jesus.
- 11:19Done it for generations. This lie about Jesus did not
- 11:24resurrect from the dead. This lie starts here.
- 11:31So verse 12, now the Bible says they went to the chief priest
- 11:36and he reported all things that had happened.
- 11:39We don't know if rather or not they actually saw Jesus.
- 11:42In fact, I don't think that they actually did see you.
- 11:44I think they were knocked out when Jesus came on out of that
- 11:47tomb. They're probably knocked out
- 11:48just by the fact that they saw those angels and they knew they
- 11:51couldn't beat them. You know, you know, these are
- 11:54these are tough men, but these angels come down looking like
- 11:57lightning and dressed in all white.
- 12:00I don't know if we I don't know if my spear is going to go.
- 12:02It's going to work here. So I'm sure these men were so
- 12:06frightened and they like you said, they were they were out.
- 12:09So when Jesus came out of that tomb, they probably didn't even
- 12:11see them, but they know what had happened.
- 12:14They know what had happened. So in verse 12 it says when they
- 12:17had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they
- 12:20gave a large sum of money. Here we go.
- 12:23Here we go, a large sum of money to the soldiers, saying tell
- 12:28them his disciples came at night and stole him away while we
- 12:33slept. And if this comes to the
- 12:35governor's ears, pilot's ears, if we we will appease him and
- 12:41make you secure, we're going to make sure you're OK Don't worry
- 12:44about it. So they took the money and did
- 12:49as they were instructed. And this saying is commonly
- 12:53reported among the Jews until this day.
- 12:59So many questions in this group of Scripture here, so many
- 13:03questions. But the main question comes
- 13:06here, the Pharisees who knew that Jesus probably would not be
- 13:15there because they knew that he said he was going to resurrect.
- 13:19So they knew that that was a possibility.
- 13:20He would not be there. They weren't afraid of the of
- 13:23the, the, the believers coming and taking them.
- 13:27They put a guard there. So if you put a guard there, how
- 13:30in the world did some men just come and take Jesus?
- 13:37So that means if you were so sleepy, that means you had to
- 13:40sleep through them moving the stone.
- 13:42You had to sleep through them going in to the the tomb and you
- 13:47had to be asleep as they carried this dead man out of the tomb
- 13:52and away from you. You had to sleep through all
- 13:55that. I mean, that just doesn't even
- 13:57make sense. But that's the enemy.
- 14:00The enemy Satan will will put together lies that don't even
- 14:04make sense might make sense to him, but it don't make sense
- 14:10doesn't make sense. So, so, so they, so they started
- 14:14this lie and just like the Scripture says, so they took the
- 14:17money because you know, you know, if, if you're not in the
- 14:20Lord Jesus Christ, you have a price, you have a price.
- 14:28What would it take for you to compromise?
- 14:31What would it take for you to deny what you know about Jesus
- 14:33Christ? Is there anything in your life
- 14:37that might cause you to compromise Jesus Christ?
- 14:45Is there any ungodly relationship?
- 14:47Is there any possession? Is there any amount of money?
- 14:51Is there anything that's in your life that may cause you to
- 14:58compromise and to deny the truth about Jesus Christ?
- 15:03We all have to ask ourselves those questions and pray that
- 15:06the Holy Spirit will give us strength, will give us strength
- 15:13because we are, we're people and we are prone to wander, we're
- 15:21prone to fail. But through the power of the
- 15:25Holy Spirit, he can give us the strength to stand and to not
- 15:31waver and to not compromise. So it says, and this has been
- 15:38done and, and, and it's, it's, it's been spoken and that's been
- 15:44the story ever since. So there's 2.
- 15:48So there's two stories that's in history today.
- 15:51There's two stories. First of all, no Jesus and one
- 15:53story. Jesus didn't rise, he didn't
- 15:54resurrect. That's one story.
- 15:57Second stories that he did resurrect, He is the Messiah.
- 16:01One story is that he's not the Messiah, but he's some madman.
- 16:05The other stories, no, he is the Messiah.
- 16:07He is the truth. He's the way and he is the life.
- 16:12And the question is, what story do you believe today?
- 16:18There's so much proof here that Jesus resurrected.
- 16:21There's so much proof because it says hereafter.
- 16:24If we read a little further and go into first First Corinthians
- 16:27chapter 15 verses 2 and three, it talks about how not only did
- 16:32these men did he show himself to these men and to these women,
- 16:37but the Bible says that he was seen by more than 500.
- 16:41Now keep in mind you only need 2 to 3 witnesses to make every
- 16:47word confirmed. According to the Jewish
- 16:51tradition and Jewish law, in the mouth of two or three witnesses,
- 16:55every word is established. They have more than 500
- 16:59witnesses that would have that have seen Jesus alive after his
- 17:05resurrection afterwards. Not only that, he has us as
- 17:14witnesses that Jesus is not dead, but he's alive.
- 17:18And how do we know? Because he lives in me, He lives
- 17:23in you. He lives in you, He lives in
- 17:28you. Your life demonstrates the true
- 17:30life of Jesus Christ. So because we know that Jesus
- 17:37did die as he said, he was killed.
- 17:41And because we know that Jesus was buried, as he said, and
- 17:47because we know that he rose again out of that grave from the
- 17:53dead, as he said. So how does that impact our
- 17:56lives? Well, first of all, as we just
- 18:00talked about last week with Jude, Jude tells us that we
- 18:04should contend for the faith that was once delivered to us to
- 18:09stand on the word of God. I was driving through Greensburg
- 18:14yesterday, and I wonder how many of you were driving through
- 18:16Greensburg on Main Street going in front of the courthouse.
- 18:19And they had this protest going on.
- 18:23So on the left side of the street, there was probably about
- 18:26four or 500 people who were, you know, it doesn't matter what
- 18:29they represent. It was 2 or 4, about 3 or 400
- 18:32people, 5 or 600 people on this one side of the street.
- 18:34And over here, there's a little less people, but they were all
- 18:37still protesting. Right through the middle were a
- 18:41number of police cars making sure that it was separated and
- 18:45that there was no, no violence going on.
- 18:49But as I was coming through there, I was thinking, man, look
- 18:55how passionate these people are about whatever it is that
- 19:01they're believing. And I don't even know what it
- 19:04was, but look how passionate they are about it.
- 19:09And I looked to the other side of the street, said, look how
- 19:12passionate they are about what it is they believe.
- 19:16Obviously it's different than what they believe.
- 19:20And then I thought, are we that passionate about what we
- 19:24believe? We're not told that we go out
- 19:27and carry picket signs or anything like that, but we are
- 19:30told to contend for the faith. Do we stand on the truth of
- 19:35Jesus Christ? Do we stand on the truth of the
- 19:38apostles and the and the and the the teaching of the apostles,
- 19:43the doctrines of the apostles when we share our faith with
- 19:47someone or do we flip flop? Do we contend for the truth?
- 19:53And then a little further down in the in the book of Matthew
- 19:56chapter 28, it tells us he says that we should obey the, the
- 20:00Great Commission. He said go and make disciples of
- 20:06all people, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son,
- 20:11and in the Holy Spirit and teaching them.
- 20:14To observe all things that I have taught you.
- 20:18Are we doing that? That's how we live, you know, in
- 20:24the resurrection of Jesus Christ, of knowing the
- 20:26resurrection of Jesus Christ. We don't live for the here and
- 20:29now. We live for what's going to
- 20:31happen for us later, for the life to come.
- 20:37That's what we live for and also tells us over in first
- 20:43Corinthians 5815 and 58. He says that we should stand
- 20:48fast, be steadfast, and we should be unmovable and we
- 20:53should always be abounding in the work of the Lord, the
- 20:56ministry of the Lord, the life of the Lord, abounding in it
- 21:01every day. It should fill our hearts.
- 21:04Regardless of what you do professionally, regardless of
- 21:07what high school you go to, regardless of what middle school
- 21:11you go to, regardless of where you go on your job, from 9:00 to
- 21:155:00 or 8:00 to 5:00 or whatever it may be, are you, are we
- 21:19abounding? Are we abounding in the work of
- 21:21the Lord? When I meet with people in my
- 21:24community, when I meet with people on the street or talk to
- 21:28people in grocery stores, am I abounding in the work of the
- 21:32Lord? It's his spirit, the one that
- 21:36people are seeing or they see in my old fleshly spirit.
- 21:41Am I abounding in the things of the Lord?
- 21:44That's how we should live. And of course, we're not living
- 21:47to build up treasures or to lay up treasures in this life.
- 21:52That's not what we're, that's not what we're doing.
- 21:56That's another part of us not living for this world.
- 22:01You see, the treasures of this life, the moth and the rust, can
- 22:06come in and cause it to be corrupt because it's not
- 22:10permanent, It's temporary. Anything that we achieve in this
- 22:14world is temporary. I was always taught that at one
- 22:18point or another, everything that we have, it's either going
- 22:21to leave us or we're going to leave it.
- 22:24Nothing is permanent in this world, but it's what we have in
- 22:28heaven. The treasures that we lay up in
- 22:31heaven that are eternal. So we lay up treasures in heaven
- 22:35with a moth and a rust does not corrupt, nor can thieves break
- 22:39in and steal, but we have an inheritance.
- 22:43The Bible tells us we have an inheritance in Jesus Christ, an
- 22:48inheritance that is incorruptible, an inheritance
- 22:51that is, that is undefiled, an inheritance that will never,
- 22:57ever, ever fade away. So I pray that with this
- 23:03resurrection and understanding of this resurrection, it means
- 23:08that we too will have a resurrection one day.
- 23:12And this life is not our permanent home, but we're going
- 23:17to be resurrected to resurrecting life one day where
- 23:21not only will our bodies change, but our world will change.
- 23:25It's going to be a new heaven and a new earth and all these
- 23:30old things are going to pass away.
- 23:33And we live looking for that, looking unto Jesus, the Author
- 23:39and the finisher of our faith. That's what Resurrection Day
- 23:46should mean to us all. Thanks for joining us today as
- 23:50we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus here on Living Waters of
- 23:55Grace. Pastor Lewis Harrell has been so
- 23:58excited to share with us about the miracle of the resurrection
- 24:02of Christ. The human race spent thousands
- 24:05of years lost in sin before God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ,
- 24:11to come be a perfect sacrifice for all mankind.
- 24:15His blood is enough to atone for the sins of all mankind, and His
- 24:19resurrection puts an end to death itself.
- 24:24Our desire is to spread this good news of the gospel to as
- 24:28many people as possible, but we need your help to do so.
- 24:32The first way you can help us is by sharing this program with a
- 24:36friend. You can join us here on Grace FM
