- 0:00This is the Voices of Life podcast, a broadcast
- 0:03of the Church for Life, where scripture shapes
- 0:07purpose, and purpose shapes the future of America.
- 0:12Today, in Week 10 of America after 2 .50, we
- 0:17explore the future of work, the meaning of calling,
- 0:21and the biblical foundation of purpose through
- 0:25Colossians 3 .23. Your host, Pastor David. Family,
- 0:34friends, listeners across America, welcome to
- 0:36the Voices of Life podcast, where scripture shapes
- 0:39purpose, purpose shapes character, and character
- 0:42shapes the future of our nation. I'm Pastor David,
- 0:45your host. Today we gather with open hearts and
- 0:49expectant faith, ready to hear what God is speaking
- 0:52into our lives for our work, our families, and
- 0:56our future. Wherever you are listening from,
- 1:00your home, your car, your workplace, or somewhere
- 1:03quiet where God meets you, I want you to know
- 1:06this. You are not here by accident. You are here
- 1:10because God is still writing your story. So take
- 1:14a breath, settle your spirit, and let's step
- 1:17together into the word, into the purpose, and
- 1:20into the future God has prepared. Colossians
- 1:243 verse 23. is one of the most quoted verses
- 1:29about work and excellence. But its original meaning
- 1:32is deeper than modern career advice. Paul wrote
- 1:37these words inside the first century household
- 1:40code. Wives and husbands, children and fathers,
- 1:44servants and masters. And to the servants he
- 1:47said, it is the Lord Christ you are serving.
- 1:50This means the value of your work does not come
- 1:54from the person signing your paycheck. It comes
- 1:57from God who shaped your purpose. Think of the
- 2:00reflections of biblical purpose and work as a
- 2:04worship and calling in modern times. What does
- 2:08that mean to you? Because at the end of the day,
- 2:11we're following God's path, but we have to have
- 2:17some meaning there too. And we have to know that
- 2:19that meaning is good, strong, and solid. So we
- 2:24look at... From the soul, the Greek heart of
- 2:29work. Paul uses a powerful Greek phrase that
- 2:34means from the soul. He is not telling believers
- 2:38to simply work hard. He is saying whatever work
- 2:41you undertake, put yourself into it. Because
- 2:44ultimately you are serving the Lord. deeper than
- 2:48just compliance, deeper than productivity, and
- 2:51deeper than ambition. It is soul -level engagement
- 2:55with the responsibility God places in your hands.
- 3:00And look at this as an obedience and calling,
- 3:05purpose beyond your career. Yes, your career
- 3:08may flourish. Yes, you may be recognized. But
- 3:12that should not be the motivation. Your inspiration
- 3:15from God, is the path. It is what good you will
- 3:21do in this world for others, for yourself, for
- 3:25family. You know, our culture often asks, what
- 3:29do you want to do? I know that's something I
- 3:31used to ask people. What do you want to do when
- 3:33you grow up? Because they may be in a job doing
- 3:35something like, is this really what you want?
- 3:38Now scripture asks a different question. What
- 3:42has God given you the opportunity and responsibility
- 3:45to do? Jobs change, careers shift, technology
- 3:50evolves, but purpose, purpose can remain. A job
- 3:54is a position. A career is a path. A vocation
- 3:58is a calling. But work, work is the broader activity
- 4:02through which we serve, create, care, and contribute.
- 4:07And purpose is the why behind it all. A person
- 4:11I met a few months back always looks at the why
- 4:16if you ask him what is the why behind something
- 4:19he'll tell you because that's something he is
- 4:21always seeking because he wants to make some
- 4:24sense of it and if you know the why there's diligence
- 4:29integrity service excellence and gratitude there's
- 4:33so many reasons but the why behind it all that
- 4:39really matters whatever you do the dignity of
- 4:43ordinary work And that's what God works best
- 4:48in. Paul begins with a sweeping phrase, whatever
- 4:52you do. It means it's all -encompassing. Not
- 4:56whatever prestigious job you have. Not whatever
- 4:59pays the most. Not whatever society celebrates.
- 5:02It's whatever you do. This means Christian dignity
- 5:07is not limited to certain occupations. A believer
- 5:10can honor God through ordinary work. faithful
- 5:14work, quiet work, work that may never trend on
- 5:17social media, but is seen by the Lord. Do you
- 5:20find meaning in your work? Ask yourself that
- 5:24question. Is this really what your calling is?
- 5:28And is there purpose in transitions? Sometimes
- 5:33we try something out and it doesn't work out
- 5:36for us. And we transition to something else.
- 5:40Now I've known people that have transitioned
- 5:42maybe a dozen times and they still haven't found
- 5:45what they're looking for, but it depends on what
- 5:48they actually set in their mind as what is their
- 5:54purpose and if they're really truly following
- 5:56that or they're just testing out different things
- 6:00and they haven't really thought it out. And sometimes
- 6:03there are people that do that. The crisis of
- 6:07meaning in modern work. Because across America,
- 6:12people are wrestling with a crisis of meaning.
- 6:14This is something we see more and more, and there's
- 6:17a lot of reasons for this. Work feels disconnected.
- 6:21Purpose feels unclear. Identity feels fragile.
- 6:25But scripture reminds us, meaning is not found
- 6:29in tasks. It is found in who we work for. When
- 6:35work is done unto the Lord, Meaning returns.
- 6:39Purpose awakens. Identity stabilizes. And that
- 6:45goes to your faithfulness in work and your character
- 6:47in your career. And there's a lot of division
- 6:51out there right now. A lot of hate being spewed
- 6:54and a lot of people saying, we can't be working
- 6:57for these millionaires, billionaires, these giant
- 7:02tech corporations, whatever it is. Well, the
- 7:06question is not, Again, who is at the head of
- 7:09the company? It's, are you happy with the work
- 7:13you're doing? Do you feel fulfilled with the
- 7:15work you're doing? Is the work you're doing meaningful
- 7:18to God? That is what really counts here. Because
- 7:23the future of work, technology and theology,
- 7:26there has to be a mix together, a bond. Because
- 7:32the future of work is changing. AI, automation,
- 7:35robotics, remote work. Gig economies, shifting
- 7:39career paths. I think the AI one is the one I
- 7:42focus on the most because they're worried now
- 7:45that AI is going to get out of control. I did
- 7:49a whole podcast that hasn't been released yet
- 7:50on AI. And the reason I did it was because I'm
- 7:55going back to Y2K. And I recall a couple of years
- 8:00before, all the way up to Y2K, the year 2000.
- 8:06There were things that went around, oh, all the
- 8:08computers are going to stop, everything's going
- 8:10to come to an end, the world's going to come
- 8:12to an end. I mean, it was every doom thinking
- 8:15that you could think of came up. And I was a
- 8:18law enforcement officer back then, and I said,
- 8:21you know, I don't necessarily believe it, but
- 8:22I really want to be working during that time.
- 8:25So there was a New Year's Eve party at our War
- 8:28Memorial Auditorium in Columbia, Tennessee at
- 8:31the time. I decided I was going to work it. So
- 8:34I was with a few other deputy sheriffs. We worked
- 8:36it. So I was in uniform, had my gun. Something
- 8:39was going to go wrong. Here it was. Well, midnight
- 8:41came and left. Nothing changed. When I went back
- 8:44to the station later, the next work day, my computer
- 8:48was working fine. So, you know, you can't take
- 8:53all these things that are said seriously. On
- 8:57the other hand, we need to be responsible with
- 9:00that. which we create with AI to make sure we
- 9:04don't do something harmful where AI gets in and
- 9:07turns off power grids or does something like
- 9:10that or affects our clean water. I mean, I can
- 9:13go on and on with what ifs, but there's a million
- 9:15what ifs. You know, we got to get past that.
- 9:20The technological question is, what jobs will
- 9:23humans still do? So AI comes into the place,
- 9:27the automation, the robotics. There's still always
- 9:32going to be a purpose for us. It doesn't matter
- 9:35how many robots are built, how many automations
- 9:38are done. The theological question is deeper.
- 9:42What is human being for if technology can perform
- 9:47more and more of the work? What are we for? Well,
- 9:51Colossians 3 verse 23 answers it. Our purpose
- 9:54is not defined by our employer. Our work whatever
- 9:59it becomes, can still be an expression of our
- 10:03service to Christ. We create these purposeful
- 10:06communities. A purposeful community can be the
- 10:11team you're working on at work. It could be the
- 10:14entire company. It could be a lot of different
- 10:17things. And workplace revival, you know, we're
- 10:22finding so many things that stopped happening.
- 10:26So many different types of jobs or companies
- 10:28or businesses are reinventing themselves and
- 10:32coming back. Sometimes they're, we call it retro,
- 10:35meaning they're coming back and it's like, God,
- 10:37isn't it the same thing we did 50 years ago?
- 10:39Yep, it sure was. And those are part of purposeful
- 10:43communities and workplace revival. A warning
- 10:45to everybody though, excellence is not workaholism.
- 10:49Work with all your heart does not mean work constantly.
- 10:53It does not mean... sacrifice your family it
- 10:56does not mean tolerate exploitation it does not
- 10:59mean measure your worth by productivity biblical
- 11:02excellence is not workaholism it is faithful
- 11:07stewardship balanced healthy god honoring and
- 11:13i wish i really thought about that back in the
- 11:1680s and 90s i'd work 60 70 hours a week and and
- 11:20i actually probably did that all the way up until
- 11:23just a few years ago. I think a lot of people
- 11:26do that. It's not so much about making the money.
- 11:30It's more about accomplishing what you want to
- 11:33or need to accomplish or your productivity and
- 11:40your sign of excellence because you took the
- 11:43time to do everything exactly the way it needed
- 11:47to be done. And that's important. That really,
- 11:50really is. Now let's turn our attentions to purpose
- 11:56and how purpose shapes our identity. Because
- 11:59that's really very important to us. Colossians
- 12:033 verse 23 teaches us that identity is not defined
- 12:06by our job titles, positions, or promotions,
- 12:08but who we work for. When we work unto the Lord,
- 12:12identity becomes stable, purpose becomes clear,
- 12:15and calling becomes visible. Your identity in
- 12:19Christ, your purpose -driven living, Your calling
- 12:23your identity. This is all interweaved and Your
- 12:28calling directs your destiny. This calling is
- 12:31not a career calling in is a direction It is
- 12:35God given compass that points you or your life
- 12:40toward impact Calling directs destiny by aligning
- 12:45your gifts and passions your opportunities and
- 12:48your assignments with God's purpose for your
- 12:50life when Calling is clear. Decisions become
- 12:54easier. Work becomes meaningful. And destiny
- 12:58becomes intentional. But you have to really understand
- 13:02your calling and your destiny alignment. Does
- 13:06everything line up? And you have to ask yourself
- 13:09that question. Work has a changing landscape.
- 13:12And work in America is changing rapidly. Automation
- 13:17is increasing. Remote work is expanding. Artificial
- 13:21intelligence is accelerating. Industries are
- 13:25shifting. But purpose does not shift when culture
- 13:29does. Believers thrive, not because work is predictable,
- 13:33but because purpose is eternal. The future of
- 13:38work belongs to those who work unto the Lord.
- 13:41You have to have your faith and know that there
- 13:45will be changing in work. and that your purpose
- 13:48sometime will find a transition. There is the
- 13:53three layers of calling. Universal calling, which
- 13:57is to love God and love people. Personal calling,
- 14:01your unique gifts and assignments. And seasonal
- 14:05calling, what God asks of you right now. Understanding
- 14:10these layers help believers navigate change without
- 14:14losing purpose. Always striving for excellence.
- 14:19And that's the believer's advantage. Excellence
- 14:22is not perfection. It is devotion. It is doing
- 14:27your best because you are working for the Lord.
- 14:30Excellence is the believer's advantage in the
- 14:34future of work. It stands out. It elevates and
- 14:37influences. It opens doors. Excellence is worship
- 14:41expressed through effort. There is a purpose
- 14:44toolkit. Every believer needs one. It's habits
- 14:50that keep calling clear and work meaningful.
- 14:54Here are five tools every purpose -driven believer
- 14:57must carry. First is reflection, reviewing your
- 15:02direction. There's prayer, aligning your heart
- 15:05with God. There's skill development, stewarding
- 15:09your gifts. There's community. encouragers surrounding
- 15:15yourself with people that really care about you
- 15:20and want you to progress and they keep encouraging
- 15:25you that's your own community and finally consistency
- 15:30which is showing up faithfully that's all you
- 15:34have to do you just have to show up be faithful
- 15:36to your work do your work with all you have.
- 15:40These tools strengthen calling and stabilize
- 15:42identity. And you know, when we talked about
- 15:46America after 250, purposeful citizens. So imagine
- 15:51an America where believers carry purpose into
- 15:55every sphere of influence. where calling shapes
- 15:58careers, where excellence shapes industries,
- 16:01where integrity shapes leadership, and where
- 16:04devotion shapes culture. Purposeful citizens
- 16:07build strong nations. This is the future of work
- 16:11for the people of God. It is part of being a
- 16:16purposeful citizenship. And it's also connected
- 16:21to that work revival we talked about. The prophetic
- 16:25declaration for purposeful believers means that
- 16:29America will rise through these people. Believers
- 16:33who work unto the Lord, believers who carry calling
- 16:36into their careers, believers who bring excellence
- 16:39into everyday assignment, and believers who reflect
- 16:41Christ in every sphere of influence. This is
- 16:46the future of work. This is the heart of what
- 16:49we're talking about this week. Now let's look
- 16:51at how calling shapes influence. Influence is
- 16:54not a platform. Influence is the fruit of calling.
- 16:59When believers work with excellence, when they
- 17:02serve with devotion, when they lead with integrity,
- 17:04influence becomes inevitable. Calling shapes
- 17:08influence because calling shapes trust. People
- 17:11follow those whose character is consistent and
- 17:14whose purpose is clear. And you gain your influence
- 17:17through service and leadership through your calling.
- 17:21Purposeful leaders carry five marks that distinguish
- 17:24them in every environment. There's clarity, meaning
- 17:28they know who they serve. There's courage. They
- 17:32act when others hesitate. There's compassion.
- 17:36They care for people deeply. There's conviction,
- 17:40when they stand for what is right. And then there's
- 17:44consistency. They show up faithfully all the
- 17:47time. These marks prepare believers to lead in
- 17:50the future of work and the future of America.
- 17:53And be clear, the future of work requires character.
- 17:57Technology can accelerate tasks, but it cannot
- 18:00accelerate character. AI can write reports, but
- 18:04it cannot write integrity. Automation can perform
- 18:07labor, but it cannot perform devotion. Robotics
- 18:10can execute assignments, but they cannot execute
- 18:13calling. The future of work. will reward those
- 18:17whose character is anchored by Colossians 3 verse
- 18:2123. There is that mesh of character and technology
- 18:25and that purpose and innovation. There's influence
- 18:28in every sphere of society. Believers are called
- 18:32to carry out influence throughout the world.
- 18:34Homes, workplaces, schools, government, healthcare,
- 18:38business, military, digital spaces. Wherever
- 18:41God places you, purpose follows you, and wherever
- 18:44you... your purpose goes influence grows purpose
- 18:48has to be exhibited in everyday life influence
- 18:52through purpose is your guide america after 250
- 18:56also set a vision for purposeful leadership imagine
- 19:01an america where believers lead with character
- 19:04where calling shapes culture where excellence
- 19:06shapes industries where integrity shapes institutions
- 19:10and where devotion shapes communities. Purposeful
- 19:13leadership is the foundation of a strong nation.
- 19:16This is the future of work for the people of
- 19:20God. We could look so much back at schools, colleges,
- 19:26universities, indoctrinating our children, placing
- 19:31ideology ahead of responsibility and just plain
- 19:39learning. The basics, reading, writing, arithmetic,
- 19:42history, social studies, geography. All these
- 19:47things mean so much because it gives a total
- 19:52vision of the world to our children. But when
- 19:57we speak, well, not us, but when teachers or
- 20:01professors start speaking ideology, it derails
- 20:04them. It puts them on a different path. A pathway
- 20:08from Christ, a pathway from integrity, a pathway
- 20:11from a purposeful future, and certainly a pathway
- 20:16from workplace revival. So the purpose question
- 20:20that changes everything here is, if your job
- 20:23disappeared tomorrow, would your purpose disappear
- 20:27with it? So if a company closes tomorrow, does
- 20:31that mean your purpose disappears with it? Colossians
- 20:353 verse 23 teaches us that purpose is not tied
- 20:37to your occupation. It's tied to obedience. Jobs
- 20:41change, careers shift, industries evolve. But
- 20:44calling remains. So you have to look at purpose
- 20:47beyond the career. And the calling as you are
- 20:52in transition. So today we declare America will
- 20:55rise through leaders of character. Believers
- 20:58will lead with integrity. Believers will influence
- 21:00with compassion. Believers will serve with excellence.
- 21:04Believers will reflect Christ in every sphere
- 21:06of influence. This is the future of work. This
- 21:09is the heart of what we're speaking to today.
- 21:13So now as we get into our final segment for today,
- 21:16we talk about work as a spiritual assignment.
- 21:19Segment 4 brings us to the heart of work as a
- 21:24spiritual assignment. Colossians 3 verse 23 reminds
- 21:28us that every task, every responsibility, every
- 21:31assignment is an opportunity to honor God. Work
- 21:34is not secular. Work is sacred. Especially when
- 21:39it's done unto the Lord. We have to reflect that
- 21:42there's sacred work, there's work as a calling,
- 21:45and there's purpose in labor. We have to understand
- 21:48those and have the meaning attached to it. We
- 21:52have to believe it. And we have to experience
- 21:56it as we do our work. If we have hesitation,
- 22:00we need to clarify that hesitation. To find out
- 22:04the why, we hesitate. Excellence is not a personality
- 22:10trait. It is a culture. A culture that honors
- 22:13God, a culture that elevates communities, a culture
- 22:16that strengthens families, and a culture that
- 22:18inspires others. When believers work through
- 22:21excellence, they raise the moral tone of every
- 22:24environment they enter. We have to keep that
- 22:26excellence culture always ahead of us, where
- 22:30we're going. And excellence and witness, this
- 22:34is all part of our devotion to God and where
- 22:38we move forward in our lives. Purpose. is not
- 22:42limited to ministry or leadership. Purpose is
- 22:46expressed in everyday sphere of influence. We
- 22:49spoke about before about homes, workplaces, schools,
- 22:52communities, digital spaces. And let's talk about
- 22:55digital spaces for a minute. It's the social
- 22:58media posts we do. It's the things we write.
- 23:02It's the reports we make. It's the emails we
- 23:06send. It's all of that. Wherever God places you,
- 23:10purpose follows you. Purpose in everyday life
- 23:13is so important because influence through your
- 23:16purpose can affect someone else's life in such
- 23:19dramatic ways. And the future of work in America
- 23:22will be shaped by believers who carry purpose
- 23:24into their assignments. Technology will evolve,
- 23:27industries will shift, and roles will change,
- 23:30but purpose will remain. Calling will remain,
- 23:33excellence will remain, devotion will remain.
- 23:35Believers will thrive because they work unto
- 23:38the Lord. Now here are five commitments for purposeful
- 23:43workers. Devotion, working unto the Lord, integrity,
- 23:47aligning actions with values, excellence, honoring
- 23:51God with quality, humility, serving without spotlight,
- 23:56and consistency, showing up faithfully. These
- 24:01commitments shape the future of work for believers
- 24:05across America. And purpose also serves as a
- 24:09national stabilizer. When people work with devotion,
- 24:14when families work with unity, when communities
- 24:16work in excellence, and when believers work with
- 24:19integrity, the nation becomes stronger. It becomes
- 24:22less divided. Purpose strengthens civic life.
- 24:25Purpose strengthens culture. Purpose strengthens
- 24:28identity. Now, that doesn't mean that everybody
- 24:31is going to become a Christian. It doesn't mean
- 24:34everyone is going to become Jewish. It doesn't
- 24:36mean everyone is going to become a Buddhist.
- 24:38What it means is there are commonalities within
- 24:43communities, and communities are made up of many
- 24:45different people from all walks of life. Now,
- 24:49there are some parts of life or beliefs in life
- 24:52that are not compatible with what we do, and
- 24:56they're not compatible because of They're destructive.
- 24:59They're not compatible because they assume if
- 25:02another person doesn't share their belief that
- 25:06the other person's belief is wrong. We don't
- 25:09say that. Christ never said that. So we don't
- 25:13believe that. That's not how we work. But we
- 25:15will not allow another belief or religion to
- 25:19try to destroy the good work and the faithfulness
- 25:24of Christ. That's something we must defend, no
- 25:27matter what. So let's look at a vision for purposeful
- 25:30work. Imagine an America where believers carry
- 25:34purpose into every assignment, where work becomes
- 25:38worship, where excellence becomes normal, where
- 25:40calling becomes visible, where devotion becomes
- 25:43cultural. This is the future of work for the
- 25:47people of God. So today we'll declare America
- 25:50will rise through the purposeful work. Believers
- 25:52will work unto the Lord. Believers will carry
- 25:55calling into their careers. Believers will bring
- 25:58excellence into assignment. Believers will reflect
- 26:01Christ in every sphere of influence. This is
- 26:05our calling. This is the future of work. Let
- 26:10us pray. Father, we come before you at the close
- 26:14of this week's session. Grateful for your word,
- 26:18grateful for your calling, and grateful for the
- 26:20purpose you place within every one of us. Lord,
- 26:23teach us to see work the way you see it. Not
- 26:28as a burden, not as a competition, not as a measure
- 26:30of worth, but as a sacred opportunity to honor
- 26:33you in everything we do. Strengthen our hands
- 26:37for assignments ahead. Steady our hearts when
- 26:40work becomes difficult. Guard our minds when
- 26:44culture becomes confusing. And anchor our identity,
- 26:48not in titles, not in positions, and not in achievements,
- 26:52but in Christ alone. Awaken purpose in every
- 26:56listener. Let calling rise. Let excellence shine.
- 27:00Let integrity lead. Let compassion guide. Let
- 27:05devotion define the way we work, the way we serve,
- 27:09and the way we live. As America steps into the
- 27:12future of work, let your people be the ones who
- 27:15carry the light unto every workplace, hope into
- 27:19every industry, and character into every sphere
- 27:23of influence. We dedicate our labor to you. We
- 27:27dedicate our gifts to you. We dedicate our future
- 27:30to you. And we declare with faith, whatever we
- 27:34do, we will work with our heart as unto the Lord.
- 27:39In Jesus' name, amen. As we close today's broadcast,
- 27:44I want to speak directly to your heart. God has
- 27:48placed purpose within you. Not a small purpose,
- 27:52not a fragile purpose, but a calling strong enough
- 27:55to carry you through every season and shine through
- 27:59every assignment. Whatever lies ahead this week,
- 28:02decisions, responsibilities, challenges, opportunities,
- 28:05you do not walk into them alone. The God that
- 28:09called you goes before you, walks beside you,
- 28:13and strengthens you from within. So step forward
- 28:16with confidence, work with devotion, lead with
- 28:19integrity, serve with compassion, and remember,
- 28:21your life is part of something God is building
- 28:24in the nation and in this generation. Until we
- 28:28meet again, may the Lord bless you, keep you,
- 28:32and guide you in every step of your purpose.
