- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And the multitudes that went before and
- 0:04Speaker 1: that followed cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Hosanna in the highest. Matthew 21.9 My Lord, I know
- 0:19Speaker 1: that you have called me to be a great leader
- 0:22Speaker 1: amongst your people. As you begin to evaluate my life,
- 0:27Speaker 1: give me the perspective and posture of Jesus. Help me
- 0:33Speaker 1: to be confident that I get to reveal that you've
- 0:36Speaker 1: called me to greater things. When the weight of leadership
- 0:41Speaker 1: tries to get me to shift from my identity, I
- 0:45Speaker 1: will stand steadfast like the colt in today's story. I
- 0:50Speaker 1: will remain calm in my resolve to unapologetically be me
- 0:55Speaker 1: and lead how you've created me. As I move in
- 0:59Speaker 1: your presence, Help me to recognize my season. Help me
- 1:05Speaker 1: to remain faithful, even when it's time for me to
- 1:08Speaker 1: step out and live out the mission for my life.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Like Jesus, hide me until it's my time to accelerate
- 1:16Speaker 1: and elevate, for it is in the quiet and obscure
- 1:20Speaker 1: moments that you are building my character and integrity, so
- 1:26Speaker 1: that when I step into my calling, and I'm forced
- 1:30Speaker 1: to carry my cross. I won't buckle under the weight
- 1:34Speaker 1: of the responsibility. As I begin my triumphal entry into
- 1:39Speaker 1: my purpose, I will look to you, Jesus, to see
- 1:43Speaker 1: me through. In Jesus' name.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Listening to these daily prayers strengthens your relationship with God.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Continue hearing from the Lord by listening to today's The
- 2:11Speaker 1: Triumphal Entry In our last story, we learned about the
- 2:15Speaker 1: silent faith of Zacchaeus and the loud faith of Bartimaeus.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Both men were held back by sin or misfortune.
- 2:23Speaker 3: However, everything changed for them when they came in contact
- 2:26Speaker 3: with Jesus. Zacchaeus used his riches to feed the poor
- 2:30Speaker 3: and destitute. Bartimaeus was blind, but had his sight restored.
- 2:35Speaker 3: They were both examples of Jesus' power to change lives.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Now we gaze upon the beginning of the end. The
- 2:42Speaker 3: final week of Jesus' life begins. Although it begins with cheers,
- 2:47Speaker 3: it will soon turn into tears. Inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:55Speaker 2: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:57Speaker 2: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast

- 3:10Speaker 2: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 3:12Speaker 2: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 3:15Speaker 2: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 3:17Speaker 2: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 3:21Speaker 2: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 3:25Speaker 2: to get a copy of the Jesus book, simply go
- 3:28Speaker 2: to jackgraham.org slash Jesus. That's jackgraham.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 3:35Speaker 2: you for your support. I'm so glad that you have
- 3:38Speaker 2: joined us in our journey with Jesus through the Bible.
- 3:42Speaker 2: In our last episode, we heard how the Lord brought
- 3:45Speaker 2: healing and restoration to two different men who had both
- 3:49Speaker 2: lived on the outskirts of society. Their encounters with the
- 3:52Speaker 2: Son of God changed them forever and opened up a
- 3:55Speaker 2: new life for them. Today, we'll hear how Jesus fulfills
- 3:59Speaker 2: an ancient prophecy about the Messiah entering into Jerusalem not
- 4:03Speaker 2: as a king at war, but as one who comes
- 4:06Speaker 2: in to bring peace. The enthusiastic crowd caught up in
- 4:10Speaker 2: the moment will worship and praise the one who would
- 4:12Speaker 2: soon be led to the cross to die for our sins.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Let's hear today's reading from God's Word. It was late.
- 4:22Speaker 3: And Jesus was enjoying the company of Lazarus and his family.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Laughter flowed endlessly into the night. The disciples and Jesus
- 4:30Speaker 3: lounged at the table as Lazarus retold the story of
- 4:33Speaker 3: his death again. The Lord smiled and looked around the room.
- 4:37Speaker 3: His disciples, his friends, he loved them dearly and was
- 4:42Speaker 3: joyful to see God work and move in their lives.
- 4:46Speaker 3: He knew that hard times were ahead, but he was
- 4:48Speaker 3: confident that they all would be steadfast.
- 4:52Speaker 2: All except one.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, lingered at the corner
- 4:57Speaker 3: of the table. Outwardly he was charming and witty, but
- 5:00Speaker 3: Jesus knew what truly dwelled deep within his heart. As
- 5:04Speaker 3: the night went on, Mary, the sister of Lazarus, emerged
- 5:07Speaker 3: from the back of the house. She was carrying a
- 5:10Speaker 3: large jug of ointment made from pure spikenard. She knelt
- 5:14Speaker 3: at Jesus' feet and began to anoint his feet and
- 5:17Speaker 3: head with the oil. The smell of the spikenard filled
- 5:20Speaker 3: the room. Everyone in the room was unsteady. Spagnard was
- 5:24Speaker 3: an expensive ointment used for a very specific purpose.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Burial.
- 5:29Speaker 3: The disciples and other guests watched in awe as Mary
- 5:33Speaker 3: anointed Jesus. The ointment was expensive and no doubt left
- 5:37Speaker 3: over from Lazarus' burial. But more than the ointment itself,
- 5:41Speaker 3: Mary was worshipping at the feet of Jesus. However, Judas
- 5:45Speaker 3: did not find the gesture sweet. All he saw was
- 5:48Speaker 3: money being wasted. What a terrible waste, Judas blurted out.
- 5:54Speaker 3: All the disciples darted their eyes toward him. Judas, realizing
- 5:58Speaker 3: he had just interrupted a holy moment, sought to recover himself. Well,
- 6:03Speaker 3: we should save it and sell it to give the
- 6:06Speaker 3: money to the poor. Jesus looked at Judas. He knew
- 6:10Speaker 3: that the poor was the last thing he had on
- 6:12Speaker 3: his mind. Jesus smiled at Mary, then spoke to Judas, saying,
- 6:18Speaker 3: Do not harass her, Judas. Allow her to keep the
- 6:21Speaker 3: rest of the spikenard for my burial, for the poor
- 6:24Speaker 3: will always be among you. I, however, will not. Judas
- 6:29Speaker 3: shrunk back in embarrassment, and Mary bowed and then left
- 6:33Speaker 3: with the rest of the ointment. The disciples were too
- 6:36Speaker 3: ignorant at the time to truly understand what Jesus meant.
- 6:40Speaker 3: His time was approaching. The next day Jesus drew near
- 6:43Speaker 3: to Jerusalem. The Passover was drawing near, and the time
- 6:47Speaker 3: of Jesus' great sacrifice was at hand. Jesus sat with
- 6:51Speaker 3: his disciples at the Mount of Olives. There he overlooked
- 6:54Speaker 3: the city. He watched over the sea of faces below.
- 6:58Speaker 3: People from all over the world had come to worship
- 7:00Speaker 3: during the Passover. He drew a deep breath and looked
- 7:03Speaker 3: to heaven.
- 7:05Speaker 2: It is time, he whispered.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Jesus stood to his feet and walked to Peter, James,
- 7:10Speaker 3: and John. My friends, I have a special task for you.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Jesus smiled, and the disciples chuckled. Usually that meant Jesus
- 7:19Speaker 3: was going to ask them to do something absurd. They
- 7:21Speaker 3: were excited at the opportunity. Go into the village at
- 7:25Speaker 3: the bottom of the hill. When you enter it, you
- 7:27Speaker 3: will find a colt tied up with its mother. It
- 7:30Speaker 3: will be unruly and dangerous. I want you to take
- 7:33Speaker 3: it for me. If anyone asks why you are taking
- 7:36Speaker 3: the donkey, simply say, The Lord has need of it.
- 7:40Speaker 3: The three men did as Jesus asked. The colt jolted
- 7:43Speaker 3: its neck back when the disciples tried to mount it.
- 7:46Speaker 3: It flailed its hind legs and kicked back. For nearly
- 7:49Speaker 3: three miles, the colt dragged its feet stubbornly into the ground.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Peter was nearly kicked in the head four times, and
- 7:56Speaker 3: James was spat on twice. The colt was truly stubborn
- 8:00Speaker 3: and unruly. However, as it approached Jesus, its spirit calmed.
- 8:06Speaker 3: The wild beast ceased its writhing, and stayed completely still
- 8:09Speaker 3: before its master. Jesus approached it and stroked its face.
- 8:14Speaker 3: The disciples were dumbfounded as Jesus mounted the colt with ease.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Jesus descended down the Mount of Olives towards Jerusalem. Word
- 8:23Speaker 3: spread that Jesus was on his way, the man who
- 8:25Speaker 3: healed the blind, the man who cast out demons, the
- 8:29Speaker 3: man who spoke with authority, the man who raised the
- 8:33Speaker 3: dead to life, the man who fed five thousand. The
- 8:37Speaker 3: man who spoke truth to power was approaching. Citizens of
- 8:41Speaker 3: God's holy nation gathered at the gates of Jerusalem to
- 8:44Speaker 3: gaze upon the chosen king. Jesus rode the colt slowly
- 8:47Speaker 3: and the people parted like the Red Sea to make
- 8:49Speaker 3: way for him. Hosanna, they cried out. Blessed be the
- 8:54Speaker 3: one who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 8:57Speaker 2: They sang.
- 8:58Speaker 3: They laid out palm fronds to make a pathway for Jesus.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Some of them even removed their own cloaks for him
- 9:05Speaker 3: to walk upon. The crowd roared with glee. They saw
- 9:09Speaker 3: Jesus as the chosen savior that would liberate them from
- 9:12Speaker 3: the oppression of Rome. They saw him as a wise
- 9:15Speaker 3: and noble king worthy to sit on the throne of David.
- 9:18Speaker 3: They wanted him to rule with power and wisdom. However,
- 9:22Speaker 3: Jesus was not the king they expected. He was the
- 9:25Speaker 3: chosen king and hero of God. He was the one
- 9:29Speaker 3: whom every hero of scripture pointed to. But his mission
- 9:33Speaker 3: was not to overthrow a temporary government. No, he had
- 9:36Speaker 3: a much greater enemy to vanquish, the sin and shame
- 9:40Speaker 3: that choked humanity since the Garden of Eden needed to
- 9:42Speaker 3: be conquered. This would require Jesus to die. So as
- 9:47Speaker 3: the people stirred and sang, Jesus said nothing. As the
- 9:51Speaker 3: people escorted him into the heart of the city to rule,
- 9:55Speaker 3: he remained silent, for his throne was a cross.
- 10:02Speaker 2: In today's scripture, Jesus and the disciples are dining together
- 10:06Speaker 2: in Bethany, the town where Mary, Martha, and Lazarus lived.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Lazarus was with them, and as they ate, Mary entered
- 10:13Speaker 2: into the room and began to anoint the feet of
- 10:15Speaker 2: Jesus with an expensive oil. She wiped the oil from
- 10:19Speaker 2: his feet with her hair, worshiping at the feet of
- 10:22Speaker 2: our Lord without regard for what others might say or think.
- 10:26Speaker 2: All she wanted was to show her love for Jesus
- 10:30Speaker 2: and to anoint him and prepare him for what was
- 10:34Speaker 2: yet to come. It was a powerful moment that was
- 10:38Speaker 2: more symbolic and more expressive than she could have possibly known.
- 10:42Speaker 2: The oil she used was typically reserved for burial preparations.
- 10:46Speaker 2: She did not know, even as they had dined together,
- 10:50Speaker 2: that Jesus was aware from that moment that his time
- 10:54Speaker 2: was drawing very near for him to go to the
- 10:56Speaker 2: cross and give his life. Not all were touched by
- 11:00Speaker 2: this act of worship, however. Judas Iscariot, the one disciple
- 11:04Speaker 2: who would fall away and betray Jesus, complained that what
- 11:08Speaker 2: he saw is the wastefulness of Mary's gesture of love
- 11:11Speaker 2: and worship. He argued that they could sell the oil
- 11:14Speaker 2: and use the money to help the poor. The reality
- 11:18Speaker 2: was that Judas wasn't really interested in the poor or
- 11:20Speaker 2: helping anyone but himself. But we're told that he often
- 11:24Speaker 2: took money from the disciples' purse for his own gain.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Jesus rebuked Judas, telling him to leave Mary alone, for
- 11:33Speaker 2: she had done what she could and all that she could.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Jesus was telling his disciples that could still not grasp
- 11:40Speaker 2: that his time on earth was coming to an end,
- 11:43Speaker 2: that worship and to serve the Lord Jesus was the
- 11:46Speaker 2: goal of life. This is why we are made. He
- 11:49Speaker 2: was soon, very soon, to be handed over to the
- 11:51Speaker 2: authorities and put to death. Jesus' rebuke of Judas even
- 11:55Speaker 2: helped speed this along, as Judas soon departed to meet
- 11:59Speaker 2: with religious leaders and agreed to betray the Lord. The
- 12:03Speaker 2: next day, Jesus spoke with his three closest disciples, giving
- 12:07Speaker 2: them instructions to go into the nearby village where they
- 12:10Speaker 2: would find a donkey tied up with its colt. He
- 12:13Speaker 2: told them to bring them to him, telling anyone who asked,
- 12:16Speaker 2: the Lord needs them. This was more than just an
- 12:20Speaker 2: arrangement for transportation. Jesus was fulfilling a prophecy from Zechariah 9,
- 12:26Speaker 2: which we find recorded in Matthew 21, verse 5. Here
- 12:28Speaker 2: it is. Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your
- 12:33Speaker 2: king is coming to you, humble and mounted on a
- 12:36Speaker 2: donkey and a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.
- 12:42Speaker 2: At this time, the people of Israel were looking for
- 12:46Speaker 2: a triumphant, conquering king who would enter the scene with
- 12:49Speaker 2: power and dominance and overthrow the Roman government. But if
- 12:54Speaker 2: they paid attention, they would have known that Jesus would
- 12:57Speaker 2: be a different kind of king, for he came in humility.
- 13:01Speaker 2: not as a military conqueror, but as the servant of
- 13:04Speaker 2: God and the Savior who would give his life as
- 13:07Speaker 2: a ransom for many. Just as Jesus descended the Mount
- 13:11Speaker 2: of Olives into Jerusalem, seated on the colt, crowds lined
- 13:15Speaker 2: the street, throwing palm fronds to the ground for him
- 13:18Speaker 2: to walk upon. They shouted praises, saying, Hosanna in the highest.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Cloaks were removed and thrown on the path as well,
- 13:26Speaker 2: and the excitement was palpable. And yet, So many, most all,
- 13:32Speaker 2: were missing the point. They wanted a Savior to fit
- 13:35Speaker 2: their mold and make their dreams come true. They wanted
- 13:38Speaker 2: a kingdom of their own. But Jesus had a greater purpose,
- 13:42Speaker 2: and the people had a much greater need. The greater
- 13:46Speaker 2: need of all is the need of salvation from sin
- 13:49Speaker 2: and to break the chains that bound them spiritually, not
- 13:52Speaker 2: just those who bound them physically. How often do we
- 13:57Speaker 2: also attempt to fit God into our own plans, our
- 14:00Speaker 2: own will, our own desires, rather than yielding and surrendering
- 14:04Speaker 2: our lives to his purpose? Just as the crowd who
- 14:07Speaker 2: wanted to seize Jesus after he fed the 5,000 and
- 14:10Speaker 2: make him a king who would then cast off the
- 14:13Speaker 2: yoke of bondage, this crowd wanted a Messiah who would
- 14:16Speaker 2: establish Israel as a powerful nation free from the power
- 14:20Speaker 2: of Rome. So they sang his praises, leading him into
- 14:24Speaker 2: Jerusalem and to claim a physical throne. But soon most
- 14:28Speaker 2: would turn away, even calling for him to be crucified.
- 14:33Speaker 2: The very ones who said hail him would soon say
- 14:37Speaker 2: nail him. The ones who were saying crown him would
- 14:41Speaker 2: soon be saying nail him to the cross. The crown
- 14:44Speaker 2: would adorn his head, would not be made of gold
- 14:47Speaker 2: and precious stones, but of twisted thorns that spilled his blood.
- 14:51Speaker 2: And yet it was by this blood that true freedom
- 14:54Speaker 2: is found because there is power in the blood of
- 14:58Speaker 2: the Lord Jesus Christ. Dear God, we thank you for
- 15:01Speaker 2: today's scripture and how we are reminded of your love
- 15:04Speaker 2: for us as Jesus came to Jerusalem prepared to die
- 15:08Speaker 2: on the cross for our sins. Thank you for Jesus.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Thank you for salvation and the forgiveness of sins and
- 15:15Speaker 2: eternal life in you. Amen. Thank you for listening to
