- 0:29SPEAKER_01: The Buffalo Bills win and will make zero apologies.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, they really shouldn't.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: Like, it's a long-ass season.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: There's going to be ups.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: There's going to be downs.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: There's going to be games where you turn the ball over five times like
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: the Buffalo Bills did today.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: You had interceptions from all-galaxy Josh Allen.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: You had another James Cook fumble.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: You've been noting those fumbles from the NFL's leading rusher for quite some time.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: And then you've got Dalton Kincaid fighting like hell for extra yardage.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: And he loses one.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: And in the end, nobody will remember because the defense showed up in a monster way.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: Buffalo beats the L.A. Chargers 24-16.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Initial thoughts, Mr. Monas.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: So a lot to take in.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: But as a first time head coach with Joe Brady, you love these games, believe it or not.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: You go home at night and you're looking around.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: You can't believe you just won.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: How did we just win that game?
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: You might laugh a little bit to your core,
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: whoever your coaches are that you're tight with that night with your beers.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: And you're sitting around, you're just thinking, how?
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: How did we win that game?
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: So, you know, whenever you steal, I always call it steal a game.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: You stole one and it happens.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: And it's a credit to your point.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: And this is why it's called a team sport.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: When things aren't clicking, I like that all galaxy, how you said that.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: When all galaxy isn't clicking,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: there's the defense coming through,
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: making the Chargers earn it Now, let's get into real quickly.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: I think we can pinpoint now finally.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think we've been saying it.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: For me, it started when this all-world quarterback the Chargers have.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: It started for me with Herbert back against Jacksonville in the playoffs years ago.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: I lost my mind that day.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: And honestly, we always make excuses for this player because he has a good arm.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: It's enough.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: At the end of the day, he has a long release.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: He's a slow processor.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: He is a slow,
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: he's a long-legged guy that does take time moving around,
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: even though he made Cole Bishop miss, which I would cut Cole Bishop after that.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: But point is, point is, yeah, no, it is.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: That's real.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: No safety.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: No, Herbert doesn't make anybody miss.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: That's a bad look.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: But point is, Herbert is the issue.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Brady did it yesterday.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: He just glossed over the fact that That he misses a touchdown,
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: blaming McConkie's size, saying he gets smaller, deeper it goes.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: How about put a little air on the ball and drop it on him because he has the guy beat?
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: I've never heard anybody make an excuse.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: When a guy's open, that's on the quarterback.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: And that's Brady can say all he wants.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: That's on the quarterback.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: How many times?
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Bad throws, interceptions.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Oh, he should have seen that.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: I can't believe he didn't see that.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: That's okay.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: He doesn't have the talent around him enough.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Enough.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: The Herbert is the issue.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying they do have a talented team.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: The Bills did what they should do against a bad offense.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: This is officially a bad offense.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: And guess what?
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: And the Bills did what they should do.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: They stopped them.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Good job.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: I think the Bills right now, Tyler,
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: for me on defense,
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: they're like 19th in points per play given up, and that's the stat I use.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: And that's okay when you have a top-rated offense, honestly.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: You're right in the range, and you're going to improve on that, hopefully.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: You don't want to go the other way.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: 19th is about the bottom line.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: You don't want to go lower because you have a great offense.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: But, man, the Chargers, good luck with that quarterback.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: I just don't see him elevating everybody.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Why isn't it – that's the franchise quarterback's job.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: Why don't we ever make this guy elevate people?
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Why is it always – Excuses.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: And he's the greatest ever.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: I'm over it.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: I've been over it since he lost to Jacksonville years ago.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: For me, he's never recovered from that, is what he is.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: There's a reason Tua was drafted ahead of him.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Release quicker, more accurate.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: When Tua was healthy in Miami, compare that offense with McDaniel and Herbert and McDaniel.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Just compare that for a little bit.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: It's embarrassing how much better it was.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: You see why Tua was drafted ahead of Herbert.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Honestly, you do.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Isn't that crazy to say that too?
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: At this point, we have to say it.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, we've said here, we've made so many excuses for Herbert.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: It's like, but let's get back to Tyler.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: I want to hear.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was a, it was 27, nothing.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: I just wanted to confirm that 2023 AFC wildcard game that you're referencing
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: against Jacksonville.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: That was the peak of all things.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: Justin Herbert, they're up 27 to nothing.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: In the second quarter,
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: late second quarter,
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Jacksonville got that touchdown right before halftime,
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: made it 27-7 and then had one of the greatest comebacks in playoff history.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: You've got to bury a team.
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: If we're going to talk about you in that upper pantheon of quarterbacks, I mean, I'm done.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: I'm done.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: We do this every offseason with Justin Herbert.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: We do it every offseason with the L.A. Chargers.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: We all get excited.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Oh, my God, now Mike McDaniel is coming over from Miami.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: Of course, he's going to take him to another level.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: You pair him with Jim Harbaugh.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: Oh, what an oddball couple.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: They should have their own TV show with their distinct personalities.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: At the end of the day,
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Justin Herbert is not a good quarterback, and it doesn't matter what Harbaugh says.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: What do you make of his tactic?
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: All offseason and into this season,
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: what he has been saying about Herbert,
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: like I get wanting to support your guy and throw out this strong gust
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: of 75 mile per hour wind support behind your guy.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: That's what Mike McDaniel did with Tua Tungabaiola, by the way, back in Miami post-Flores.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: And it worked for a while until it didn't,
- 6:20SPEAKER_01: until the truth came out on who Tua is as a quarterback.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Did you see or read the quote?
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: From Harbaugh, I think it was Michael Irvin's podcast, what he said.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is absurd.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: Quote, allow me to call my shot.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: This is Jim Harbaugh.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Allow me to call my shot like Babe Ruth pointing his bat over to center field.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Justin Herbert,
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: when it's all said and done,
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: when his career comes to an end,
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: I predict he will be known as the greatest,
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: best ever to play the position of quarterback.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: When it's all said and done and his career is finished,
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: we're going to look back and say, yep, That's the best that ever did it.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're just going to look and sound like a clown if you're speaking
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: about your quarterback in these terms.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: That's way over the top.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: They're 0-3.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Very little hope.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: The schedule only gets tougher.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: And we'll get to the Bills' defense and what they did, but I'm with you.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: I think Herbert is the headline here because of the way he's constantly hoisted up
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: by those in our business who For six and a half, seven months every offseason.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just can't get over it.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: We don't do that for other quarterbacks.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Like, we just don't.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: And that's why I said, I just, for me,
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: you could say all you want,
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: and sometimes people want to be right no matter what,
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: especially when you're analyzing Herbert as coming out on the draft or,
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: like you said, yeah, he looks prettier than Tua.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: That's a good point.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day,
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: I honestly can,
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: there was a time,
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: and I There was a time when Tua was playing at a high level in Miami.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: I'm talking like making accurate down-the-field throws with McDaniel.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm trying to say.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: I don't think that's a flu.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: And I think Tua had a couple good years.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: I thought the injuries for me is what kind of took Tua to at least derail him.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: I don't think Tua was a generational talent.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: But was he a good starter in the NFL?
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think so.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Same with Herbert.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: I'd say he's a good starter at best.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: But this talk of him being this, take my shot and enough.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Do something.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: Win a game.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: 28-0 or whatever.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: 28-3.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: You could sense it Sunday,
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: couldn't you, where they were getting those turnovers, but
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: they weren't finishing.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: It was 10-0 when it could have been 24-0.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: It was 10-10 when it could have been 28-10.
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: They...
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: We're charging just a little earlier than usual.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: Usually they charger it up in the fourth quarter.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: They were just playing pat a cake.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: And you had to figure that the Buffalo Bills would turn it on at some point.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: And they did.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, James Cook, post fumble.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Play one.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: Couldn't have gone any worse for James Cook.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: He turned it on, man.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: He ran hard.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: And they needed every one of those.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: How many carries did he finish with?
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: James Cook had...
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: 24 carries for $1.53, 6.4 average, along at 23.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: So he was just carving them up in little chunks.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: I have.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, I get the frustration with the fumbles, but that's why you keep feeding them the ball.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: They didn't give the ball to a running back.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: You don't need to.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: It'd be easy for a coach to throw him in the doghouse, get another guy in there.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: They know what they have.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: Here it is, Tyler.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: I've thought about it because we've talked about this on the pod now for two years.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: He leads the NFL in fumbling.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: It doesn't matter.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: He is that good, and I'm with you on all that.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: His slashing cutback style is unique.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: It's hard to find, and he's got the speed to finish.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: He's not a pounder.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: It's not his style, and that's okay.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: What he does is unique.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: But the fumble thing, here's what I want to relate it to because I know you're a Seinfeld fan.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: Think about driving a luxury car like Kramer does,
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: and you're just,
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: basically,
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: you're pushing the envelope because you don't want to pull over to fill that tank.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: You are close to E.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: And that's really what you're going to be dealing with in the fourth quarter
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: with James Cook.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: You have that luxury car.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: You better keep driving it.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: But at some point, man, I don't know.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: I just, the history...
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: I think they're going to have to think about,
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: if it continues,
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: if it continues, they're going to have to think about fourth quarters at some point.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: That's all I would say.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: But honestly, you got to keep rolling.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: He's just that good.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: We're in week three.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: That's definitely a January conversation on the mileage you're putting on these tires.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Because right now, it's easy to...
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: For us to be Kramer and that car salesman just going like this.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Let's go!
- 11:14SPEAKER_01: And passing the exit and just keep rolling on that highway, baby.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: Because he is a rare back.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: And they almost...
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, it wasn't an accident.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: They saw the talent in him.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: But he was number one back at Georgia.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: When they drafted him,
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: they're talking about his receiving ability and how he could be this dual threat.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: Lo and behold,
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: he's just become this bell cow that you can keep feeding throughout the course of
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: a game.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: And I...
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: He's calibrated with that offensive line.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: You heard Connor McGovern and these linemen talking about it after the opener.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: They've been together for a while.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: Even Alec Anderson, the new starter, he's logged a ton of snaps.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: So they can kind of speak the same language up there.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Look, when you then juxtapose that with the mess in Green Bay,
- 11:57SPEAKER_01: and I want to bring them up again in this conversation where
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: that line is you've got guards playing tackle and tackle playing guards
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: and guards playing centers and your Lincoln Tomlinson is supposed to save
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: the day now.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: It's a cluster you-know-what in Green Bay on the offensive line, and it's affecting everything.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: They have zero run game.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: They ran for 17 yards last week against Atlanta.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: Jordan Love is getting pressured more than anybody in the NFL.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: It's awful, and everybody's to blame.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: The head coach, the GM, the O-line coach, the players who are missing the blocks.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: Buffalo doesn't have that synergy.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: They're staying healthy.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: They play together forever.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: You can't ignore the fact that Green Bay is missing a top-five running back.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: That's all I would say.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: I think everything gets heightened because of the lack of Jacobs and Parsons
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: on defense for Green Bay, to be honest.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Those are two top five players at their position.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Now that's going to be LeFleur's,
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: that's going to be his whatever, but good in the GM, but that's on them too.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, you knew it wasn't like you were surprised by any of this.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: These were all things you could have prepared for.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: So that's where I would say you, you can, but
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: you're right.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Hey, I mean, Josh Jacobs last year, he'd get hit behind the line of scrimmage.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: I love Jacobs.
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: I'm a, I think he's a, there's very few backs I think are difference makers.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: I think he's a difference maker.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: So I don't take that lightly with him,
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: but to your point,
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: I don't want to like, it's an excuse to, I mean, do better, have better players.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: But, And it wasn't a surprise that they traded for Caleb Johnson, I guess.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: I don't know, man.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: I talked to Ray Davis in the spring.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: He's pretty frustrated.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: He wants to be a number one back somewhere.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: Hell, he ran for over 100 against a Jets defense that gave Green Bay fits in week two.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know what kind of draft capital you'd part with if you'd ever even want
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: to part with him if you're Brandon beating the Bills, but.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: I'm sure Ray Davis wouldn't mind that opportunity.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: You gotta listen.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: You gotta listen to Green
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: Bay or elsewhere.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Cause I, cause I get Buffalo feed and cook.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: He's too good.
- 14:02SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: It's just, it's going to just be, I don't know how to explain it other than that.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: It's just, you know, you know, it could happen right in the fourth quarter.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: And as long as everybody understands it could happen, support it and keep it moving.
- 14:17SPEAKER_00: Cause he is that good.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Key point of the game.
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: I want to get your thoughts on this.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: So pulling it up here.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: This is when the Bills were down 13 to 10.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: They're still engaged in this pillow fight with Justin Herbert and the gang.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: It's fourth and six at the Chargers 43.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: And Joe Brady goes for it.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Touchdown.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Ty Johnson, the Dawson Knox hold, brings it back, but they still get it down to the LA 24.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: That was the critical moment where you could
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: try to play this field position game,
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: or some coaches might do that because the offense,
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, the offense is, the passing game is playing terribly at that point, right?
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: All these turnovers, all these misfires, nothing's working, but still, you stay aggressive.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: Still, you go for it.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: And that play was ridiculous.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, Josh Allen has that in him.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: Nothing's going right.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: And yet, with bodies all around him, he's getting dragged down at his hip.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: He's able to see Ty Johnson to his left at the last minute.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Flick it over to him.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: And it ended
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: up being a,
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: gosh, you do the math there, what, 19 yards?
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: After all those.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: Huge, huge play.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: Because then, obviously, they later finish the drive.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: They go up 17 to 13 yards.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: And never relinquish.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: I was thinking I was so happy they went for it regardless of what was going to happen.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: And I'm thinking, damn, you know, the play looked dead.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: I was like, Hey, you went for it.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: The play is dead.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: And then would you call them all galaxy?
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: That's what all galaxy does for you.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: He can get you out of a jam or two or three.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: And then another moment.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: A key third down late in the game.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Gotta have it to put this one away.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: This is why you trade for DJ Moore.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: This is why you trade the 60th overall pick for somebody that you believe can be
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: a true number one.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: You don't really hear everyone eats quite as much anymore.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: It's a cool rallying cry of selflessness and seeing the whole field and finding the open man.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: You still need that dude.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: We've been saying it all offseason.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: You need that wide receiver.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: You're in the huddle.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: You know exactly where you're going to go with the football.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: It doesn't matter what they're in.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Kind of plays into that whole,
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: they've got to play us theme that Joe Brady's been talking to us about since March.
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: That's why you get DJ Moore.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: You know he's going to win.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: He's going to go in motion.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: He's going to get loose.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: He's going to get a step.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: And Josh Allen is going to get him the football by any means.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: Huge play.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: I think that this was a game where You saw some of these newcomers step up,
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: and none bigger than DJ Moore.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: Is he that missing piece for this past game?
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, they don't want to get caught into a playoff game throwing
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: to Mac Hollins like they were in the 24 AFC Championship game.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: He's your leading receiver.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: Or throwing to Brandon Cooks on the controversial, was it a catch, was it an interception?
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: He shouldn't be in that position.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: That should be DJ Moore.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Everything's on the line.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: You're getting the ball to DJ.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: More in Kincaid.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: And you can see that Josh Allen has that.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: These are your stud players for a reason.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: You look where they were drafted.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: Look at their production in the NFL.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: Kincaid's health is imperative,
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: I think, for this offense to take it to that next level that they like to.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: But more seamless signing.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: When that happens in the NFL, it's hard to do, but This one is like a home run check mark.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: I mean, it looks like they've been playing together forever.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: And Josh Allen just looks so happy to have a guy that he can trust, a professional.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: He's a professional.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: That's what he is.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: He's playing hurt, too.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: He had this shoulder issue going on.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: You could see him kind of tend into it through the game, and he was not going to be denied.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: He was going to play in this game.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: And DJ Moore,
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: not that he needed to win over anybody in that locker room,
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: but when you play hurt like this and the players all know it,
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: everybody knows it in the inside,
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: they are all just, it's the thump, respect, respect.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: Like that's how you build championships.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: Like this is it.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: And like we said, and the defense came through, that's team effort.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: That's defense helping the offense, huge.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Just knowing what I do about his personality,
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: going back to the Bears series I did last year,
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: he's got the personality to tell trainers,
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: tell the team doctor, tell coaches, no, I'm playing.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: I'm playing.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: That's just his instinct is to overrule whatever you're telling him and will himself
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: onto the field.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: I would not be surprised if that's how the conversation went down with DJ Moore.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: It's week three.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: It's about January.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: It's not about September for the Buffalo Bills.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: He doesn't He doesn't give a damn.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: He's going to play in this game, and that's such a great point, Jim.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: Everybody else notices.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: If one of your leaders,
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: one of the vets in that room is going to play through pain, oh,
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: by the way,
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: Josh Allen couldn't even walk during the week last year on his own at the end.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: He was hurting so bad with that foot, the metatarsal.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: Others are going to follow.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: If you're a backup guard or a linebacker or a saint,
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: anybody,
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: and you're in pain,
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: there's a difference between being sore, Hurting and being injured.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: There's a fine line there.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: And there are players, many players who tap out for a week or two.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: I don't think you see that in Buffalo.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: I think that's what Terry Pagula is talking about
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: when he's stressing how much character is in the locker room when we sat down.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Tyler, I wanted to ask you about that hit that Josh Allen took, though.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: Was there any talk about that?
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: Was there anything from that?
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: Did they say?
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: I guess that'll be something you pay attention to this week during the week,
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: but that hit looked close to being ugly on him late in the game.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: I'm not,
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: that one is a,
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: that's why your whole season,
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: I promise you there was some hold your breath, yes, watching him take that hit.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: That was ugly.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's where it gets tough, right?
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Because they want Josh Allen to be himself and to push the envelope.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: But it's true.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: You lose him.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: But he has
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: to do that.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: It's like that for most teams.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: But man, that's how close it can come.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: No.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: It's tough.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, look at all the quarterbacks that are down.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: All over the NFL.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: They can't lose them.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: I just think they're going to continue to play with fire, though.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: I really do.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: I cannot see Joe Brady, Pete Carmichael, and those coaches telling Josh Allen...
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: To tone it down.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: No, you shouldn't.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: I was just saying how close it can.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: That's how close it can come, though.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: The only team that can beat the Bills is
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: the Bills.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: And the Chiefs, I suppose.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: Hold on.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: Hold on.
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: That's our first take it easy moment.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: When you're 19th ranked defense,
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: I'm going to keep stressing this,
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: I still need to,
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: like, yes, yesterday was a good day against the 29th ranked offense in the NFL.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Like, good job.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: But I'm still,
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: I still get worried if you can't stop people, and that's what we need to make sure.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: Like, when you play Cincy and Baltimore, namely,
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: and Kansas City,
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: those three teams,
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: because it's still the same, we're still talking about the same teams.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Shootouts, that's a tough way to go.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Can you, Can you beat up their quarterback is going to be the key.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm saying that they might beat themselves.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: They had all those turnovers against Denver in the playoffs last year.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Obviously, it can happen.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: It is a tough way to make a living.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: I do think there's just more havoc being created up front, though.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: I don't know what the metrics you're looking at those a lot closer than me.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: I'm seeing more out of the D-line.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: Gregory Rousseau looks like a completely different player.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: He's always been.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: To me, he's all.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: You're not in?
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: You're not buying that Rousseau stock yet?
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Look at Rousseau's history.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: He's always had a good history of pressures.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: That's what they drafted him for.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: But they have,
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: I'm just telling you,
- 23:02SPEAKER_00: this defense,
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: where's the generational talent,
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: the D-tackle that we just talked about for two weeks?
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: How did he do yesterday?
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: Didn't notice him.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: No, he did not do good.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: I watched him.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: He batted the ball.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: He forced that near pick.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Okay, my point is we're going to see soon enough.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: Dwayne Carter had a nice pressure or two.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: Russo's got six sacks and three forced bumbles.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: He's been a good pass rusher every year of his career.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: He's getting more sacks.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: He's getting home more now because they are playing from ahead and they're teeing off on people.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: But a lot of his sacks are scheme.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: Which is a formula.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: We talked about that.
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: I think it's sustainable.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Until they can show me they can stop anybody,
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: it's going to be tough to beat Lamar Burrow or Mahomes.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: I still think it's going to be hard.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: It's a fair point.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: You know, when you've got Max Harrison, Davison, Igbenosan now at corner.
- 23:58SPEAKER_01: We'll see what's up with Christian Benford's toe, right?
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: I want to say it was a toe.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: When he came up lame, hang with me here.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: I didn't see what the injury was for him.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: I saw that he, yeah.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: He's, I mean, Benford has his.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: Right, yep, it was a late third quarter.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: Went down, they lose him, and he was struggling himself.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: For last year and a half, I've seen him get beat plenty.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: CJ Gardner-Johnson had the interception.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Solid game.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Good game.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: You're relying on the front getting pressure.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: That's a dangerous way to make a living, but I like going down swinging if you're the Bills.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: You've done too much of the sit back, make them go 15 plays, maybe they'll screw up.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: That doesn't work against Mahomes and Burrow and Lamar and the best of the best
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: when everything's on the line.
- 24:54SPEAKER_01: They will gladly sit there, pick you apart.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: Bo Nix did it, third and 11, Court and Sutton.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: Take chances.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: Take chances.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: Give up yards.
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: First two games, how they gave up points.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: Just create a culture of turnovers and opportunistic moments where you're going
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: to – Deion Walker is going to get that one pressure that creates that one turnover
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: or that one sack on third down and flips the game
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: because that's all this quarterback needs.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: You're not playing ball control.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: And I think Brady gets that in a way his predecessor did not.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: At the end of the day, they've played two good offenses and didn't stop either one.
- 25:31SPEAKER_00: They played one horrible offense and had some success.
- 25:37SPEAKER_01: They do have a quarterback who nearly won MVP last year coming to town next week in Drake May.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: That's for another pod right now.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: I feel like the godfather.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: They massacred my boy.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: They massacred my boy, Jim.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: No, we'll talk about it later.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: What is going on with
- 25:54SPEAKER_01: Drake May?
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we'll talk about it later.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: It's bad, Bale.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: Right, we'll have real football later this week, but man.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: It's bad.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: It's bad.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: You've got Mike Vrabel doing the full Russini,
- 26:08SPEAKER_01: Sedona, hands on the shoulders to Drake May on the sideline.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: There is nothing worse.
- 26:14SPEAKER_01: You're already at that point.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: You can't go full Russini week three for Braves.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: Well said.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Not good.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Anybody that's ever played quarterback, I mean, get out of my face with that.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Like, there is no way I'd want some coach.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: I never had a coach do that to me when I played.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: But, like, get out of my face as a coach.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Get your arms off me.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: I'm struggling.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: Isn't that the truth?
- 26:37SPEAKER_01: Scream at me instead of that.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: Get in my face and mother F me up and down.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: I was the same way in high school.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: Literally, like, I don't know what was that.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: No way do I want that.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: Bad look.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: Because it's like patronizing,
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: you know?
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: It's babying, patronizing.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: Get out of here with that.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, man.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: I'm not giving up.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: I'm not giving up.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, no.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: I think there's something there, but yeah, he's definitely a ways away.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: The shoulder.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: The shoulder.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: There's got to be something.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: I told you, I wasn't his biggest fan coming out of college.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: We're not doctors, but we do have eyeballs.
- 27:18SPEAKER_00: I wasn't the biggest fan of his coming out of college, so.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Well, clearly it was all Stephon Diggs, right?
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: It was a mix of Diggs and we know.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: It can't be overstated what they did last year as far as who they played.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: It really was an amazing kind of how it lined up for them last year.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: So that can't be underrated.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: It did.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: It did.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: He was so good in these games.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: He was good.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: Really, I'm thinking of that Saints game,
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: some of those deep shots,
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: the deep accuracy, the brain to pick up Josh McDaniel's offense.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: They're watching Tom Brady clips during the week.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: They're doing the stuff that worked for one of the greatest ever.
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: He's got socked in the mouth.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: We'll see how he responds.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: They are desperate.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: I don't know if they need to win, but they need to show a pulse.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: At Highmark Stadium.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: I can't stop laughing.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: They didn't show a pulse in Jacksonville.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: I can't stop laughing, though,
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: because when you're Vrabel and you do what you call the Russini,
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: arms over the shoulder, I love you, to Drake May, like, please help me.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: That's your last.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, if it doesn't get better from here, what do you do?
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: You went all the way in.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: Now you just begged.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: Tommy Salami?
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: That's just a bad look.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: I still can't believe he did that.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: What, throwing DeVito in there at the end?
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love Tommy DeVito.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: No, I'm just talking about his arms over the shoulder on May.
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: You can't put your arms over the shoulder.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: You can't put your arms.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: Last point on the Bills, I think is
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: knowing how to finish, facing some adversity.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: Getting punched.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: Everything's going wrong.
- 29:11SPEAKER_01: And not letting that thing completely snowball on you.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: Again, like the Green Bay Packers.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: Things snowball for Matt LaFleur.
- 29:21SPEAKER_01: They don't have the heart.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: They don't have the guts.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: They start expecting the next thing to go wrong.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: And the next thing does go wrong.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: Repeatedly.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: And they're blown out.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: Or they give up a double-digit lead.
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: It's hard to quantify, right?
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: Point A to point B.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: How...
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: But it is coaching to some extent to psychologically prepare your players to respond
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: through the course of a game like that.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: The Packers have not been able to.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: The Bills did against a bad Chargers offense.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: But a desperate Chargers team.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: Can't underestimate that.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: Good win.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: That was a good win.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: Desperate.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: And that's a dangerous team.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: It's a good win for the Bills to get this.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: And I guess the division's pretty much locked up with a win in week four.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: We're going to talk about this another time.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: Could it get to the point the Bills could, like, sit Josh Allen at the end of the year?
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: It's very possible.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: Are we already having that conversation of rust in week 17, 18, or health?
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's real.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: Possibly.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're...
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: You're going to have to show up every game in your division,
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: but they shouldn't lose any of those teams.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: No, no.
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: And look, we were just waxing poetic about the Cincinnati Bengals defense.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: Aaron Rodgers.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: Week to week league.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: You see Aaron Rodgers and Darnell Washington and Roman Wilson tear them up.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: You called that, Jim.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: I said.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: We were texting or talking on the phone about it last week.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: Week to week league.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: All right, we'll catch us later this week for real football.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: We'll get to the rest of the NFL.
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: Definitely want to make this a habit, though.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: We're both in Western New York.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: I'll be at a lot of these Bills games to kind of put a bow on the Bills,
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: the home team here for all of you.
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: So thanks so much for watching, listening, wherever, however.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: You can catch this podcast right at golongtd.com, the Substack app.
