1:30
Speaker 2: the hint of fall we had, well, you're going to
1:33
Speaker 2: like this. Metro News meteorologist Brian Hughes says sunny and
1:36
Speaker 2: in the mid to upper 70s today, maybe 80s, maybe
1:40
Speaker 2: possibly clear and cool tonight with a low around 55. Tomorrow, sunny,
1:43
Speaker 2: warmer with a high of a low 80s. Continued sunny
1:46
Speaker 2: and hot on Friday with the chance of scattered showers
1:48
Speaker 2: and storms anytime from High school football Friday night through
1:51
Speaker 2: the weekend, 80s on Friday with some rain around, maybe
1:54
Speaker 2: below 70s on Saturday. Download the Metroduce television app for
1:57
Speaker 2: Brian and his team of weather folks and follow along
2:00
Speaker 2: on social media as well. Coming up, and I can't
2:03
Speaker 2: do it as well as the audience does, but Wheel
2:06
Speaker 2: of Fortune. An area lady by the name of Autumn
2:09
Speaker 2: Martin went on the wheel Monday night and won big.
2:12
Speaker 2: And we are going to talk to her, plus several
2:14
Speaker 2: things in the news to get to, and your calls
2:15
Speaker 2: and texts are always welcome. Guaranteed Bank Hotline 304-345-5858. Tony
2:19
Speaker 2: Vitale or text 304-935-500. I want to welcome you to
2:25
Speaker 2: the show now. A gentleman by the name of Aaron Patton.
2:27
Speaker 2: He's a photographer, but much more than just that. He's
2:30
Speaker 2: a journalist of people, if that makes sense. He's working
2:33
Speaker 2: on a project called The Americans, a national portrait archive
2:36
Speaker 2: documenting America one community at a time. And he's here
2:40
Speaker 2: with us in the JR Construction Studios this morning because
2:42
Speaker 2: his tour landed him in Charleston. Good morning, sir. Welcome
2:46
Speaker 2: to the show.
2:46
Speaker 1: Good morning.
2:46
Speaker 6: Good to be here.
2:47
Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. Now, did I get the
2:49
Speaker 2: setup of everything right?
2:50
Speaker 6: That sounds great, man. Better than I could say it. Okay.
2:52
Speaker 2: So tell us about this project. What's the whole idea
2:54
Speaker 2: behind it?
2:55
Speaker 6: Yeah, so we're just kind of going all over the country.
2:57
Speaker 6: All 50 states started about 18 months ago, and we're
2:59
Speaker 6: just trying to get a picture of what America looks
3:01
Speaker 6: like right now. So here we are in West Virginia
3:03
Speaker 6: to see what West Virginia looks like.
3:05
Speaker 2: So where did the idea come from?
3:07
Speaker 6: You know, I always have something on the back burner,
3:09
Speaker 6: and this has been kind of in my mind for
3:10
Speaker 6: a long time.
3:11
Speaker 2: Now you just moved it to the front burner.
3:12
Speaker 1: Exactly.
3:13
Speaker 4: Yeah.
3:13
Speaker 6: And then made the crazy idea to drive all over
3:15
Speaker 6: 50 states, you know, when gas prices are going crazy.
3:18
Speaker 2: Well, it's not a better time to do it.
3:20
Speaker 7: Perfect time.
3:20
Speaker 2: I mean, well, you're experiencing what Americans are experiencing right now.
3:23
Speaker 4: Absolutely.
3:24
Speaker 2: And whatever all of us are experiencing.
3:26
Speaker 8: All right.
3:26
Speaker 2: So you're in Charleston now, and I was looking at
3:28
Speaker 2: some of the places that you are going or have been.
3:31
Speaker 2: Jefferson City, Missouri, Louisville, Cincinnati, Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Nashville.
3:37
Speaker 1: Why Charleston?
3:38
Speaker 6: You know, heart of the state, right? Got to hit
3:41
Speaker 6: the capital cities when we can.
3:42
Speaker 2: But I mean, I guess why West Virginia? Maybe I
3:44
Speaker 2: should have put it that way. I mean, well, I mean,
3:47
Speaker 2: you're doing all 50. That's why.
3:48
Speaker 6: All 50 states. We're trying to get off the interstates
3:51
Speaker 6: when we can, but this seemed like a real easy
3:54
Speaker 6: stop coming in on our loop back around to back
3:56
Speaker 6: home to Kansas.
3:57
Speaker 2: All right, so that's where you're from is Kansas. What
3:59
Speaker 2: part of Kansas?
4:00
Speaker 6: Wichita, Kansas, middle of everything. People say it's the middle
4:02
Speaker 6: of nowhere. I say it's the middle of everywhere.
4:04
Speaker 2: Well, how did you get involved in doing the whole
4:07
Speaker 2: photography thing and things that you're doing? I mean, was
4:10
Speaker 2: this a passion of yours when you were younger? How'd
4:11
Speaker 2: you fall into this whole thing?
4:13
Speaker 6: Yeah, I've been a photographer professionally for about 19 years now.
4:16
Speaker 6: Started right after we got married, my wife and I.
4:18
Speaker 2: Your wife is here, by the way, with us. She's
4:20
Speaker 2: documenting everything.
4:22
Speaker 6: Yeah, she's the one that makes radio look pretty.
4:24
Speaker 1: Okay.
4:25
Speaker 4: Well, good.
4:25
Speaker 2: We'll hire full time. I need all the help I
4:27
Speaker 2: can get. But go ahead.
4:28
Speaker 9: Yeah.
4:28
Speaker 6: So it started about two decades ago, right after our wedding,
4:33
Speaker 6: decided the wedding photography looked like a good thing. We
4:36
Speaker 6: did about seven weddings, decided that wasn't a good thing.
4:38
Speaker 2: Okay.
4:39
Speaker 6: And I became a commercial photographer, been doing that for
4:42
Speaker 6: magazines and TV shows and things like that all over
4:44
Speaker 6: the place and decided to do something. With this project
4:47
Speaker 6: that was my own idea rather than a client's idea,
4:50
Speaker 6: even though I love my clients.
4:52
Speaker 7: Okay.
4:52
Speaker 2: So, and I went through and looked at some of
4:53
Speaker 2: your work. It's phenomenal, by the way. I don't know
4:56
Speaker 2: the first thing about photography, but I know what I
4:59
Speaker 2: see and what I like. How do you choose what
5:02
Speaker 2: you are going to be documenting?
5:04
Speaker 6: That's a great question. You know, every time I go
5:06
Speaker 6: to one of these stops like this, it's a totally
5:08
Speaker 6: open call. So anybody that shows up is more than
5:10
Speaker 6: welcome to be photographed. I don't turn anybody away. I
5:13
Speaker 6: try not to curate the selection too much. Once in
5:15
Speaker 6: a while, I do try to find like a, you know,
5:17
Speaker 6: into a rattlesnake roundup in Okinaw, Oklahoma.
5:19
Speaker 2: A rattlesnake roundup.
5:20
Speaker 6: Yeah, that was a good time.
5:21
Speaker 2: If you like rattlesnakes, which I don't, but, you know.
5:26
Speaker 2: If I was going to spend time with a creature
5:28
Speaker 2: and you gave me a top 10, they probably wouldn't
5:30
Speaker 2: come in the top 10, but that's okay.
5:31
Speaker 6: You know, they seem to like them down there. Or,
5:35
Speaker 6: you know, we'll go to a rodeo in Mesquite, Texas,
5:37
Speaker 6: but every place else we go, we try to just
5:39
Speaker 6: open it up to see what the public brings us
5:42
Speaker 6: rather than what we... have preconceived in our minds.
5:44
Speaker 2: Okay, so you're going to be setting up shop, right,
5:47
Speaker 2: at a central location. Talk about that.
5:48
Speaker 10: Yes, sir.
5:49
Speaker 6: We will be at the Kanawha County Public Library on
5:51
Speaker 6: the fourth floor in their gallery space there this evening
5:54
Speaker 6: from four to seven, and it is open to anybody
5:57
Speaker 6: that wants to come by and be a part of
5:58
Speaker 6: this project.
5:59
Speaker 2: Okay, so what are, I mean, is there any, I
6:01
Speaker 2: know it's open to anybody, but is there I mean,
6:04
Speaker 2: people may be listening right now going, well, that sounds
6:05
Speaker 2: like a cool project, but I'm nobody. I'm nobody. That's
6:09
Speaker 2: what you want are quote unquote nobodies. And I mean
6:11
Speaker 2: that in the best possible way.
6:13
Speaker 6: A hundred percent. Everybody thinks that I'm not interesting enough
6:16
Speaker 6: to be a part of that. And I tell people
6:18
Speaker 6: all the time, I've never met a single normal person
6:20
Speaker 6: the entire time I've been doing this. So if you're
6:23
Speaker 6: completely normal, I want to meet you because that would
6:25
Speaker 6: be new for me.
6:26
Speaker 2: So what is involved when people come out? I mean,
6:29
Speaker 2: they say, okay, I'm going to do this. What can
6:32
Speaker 2: they expect?
6:32
Speaker 6: Yeah, it is a real simple thing. People don't need
6:35
Speaker 6: to be too nervous about it. You just come in.
6:37
Speaker 6: You've got to sign a model release because my lawyer
6:39
Speaker 6: makes me do that before we put you in a book.
6:42
Speaker 6: And then once we call you up, it's about three,
6:45
Speaker 6: four minutes. I just talk to you for a second,
6:48
Speaker 6: take your portrait, and that's the game. It is pretty simple.
6:50
Speaker 2: And do you do any kind of a bio with people?
6:52
Speaker 2: I mean, do you say like Dave– 56 years old,
6:56
Speaker 2: I mean, you know, radio announcer. I mean, what goes on?
6:59
Speaker 2: I saw your work, but I want you to explain it.
7:00
Speaker 6: To other people. So the core of the project, I
7:04
Speaker 6: don't use names on my own. People sometimes do when
7:07
Speaker 6: they call into what I call the storyline. That's how
7:09
Speaker 6: you get your bios. But for everybody I photograph, I
7:11
Speaker 6: just get simple demographic and who I get, what you do,
7:14
Speaker 6: where you were born, and where I photographed you. And
7:16
Speaker 6: with that, I'm kind of creating this map of almost
7:19
Speaker 6: migration patterns across the country, where people come from, where
7:22
Speaker 6: I meet them. And it's become this really interesting archive
7:25
Speaker 6: database we're building. But then I also have a thing
7:28
Speaker 6: called Storyline where people are welcome to call in and
7:30
Speaker 6: tell their story in their words. Because, you know, a
7:33
Speaker 6: portrait of somebody is kind of my interpretation of them.
7:35
Speaker 6: So I want to give them the chance to give
7:36
Speaker 6: their interpretation to them back.
7:38
Speaker 2: And we want, and again, let me ask this of
7:42
Speaker 2: you so people can go see it. And then I'll
7:44
Speaker 2: follow up with a question. Where can people see what
7:45
Speaker 2: you've done? Because I found it easily on social media.
7:48
Speaker 2: Do you have a website? What's the best way to find?
7:50
Speaker 6: For sure, theamericansproject.com, Instagram at The Americans Project. If you
7:54
Speaker 6: just type in The Americans Project, you're going to find me.
7:57
Speaker 7: Okay.
7:57
Speaker 2: And so the pictures, the photographs that I saw when
8:00
Speaker 2: I was doing some research on this earlier, we don't
8:03
Speaker 2: want people to think that you're coming out like wedding pictures,
8:06
Speaker 2: which you did, or senior portraits, or glamour shots, if
8:09
Speaker 2: you don't know to remember what glamour shots are. This
8:11
Speaker 2: is just people just being themselves.
8:14
Speaker 11: 100%.
8:15
Speaker 6: I call it like a Almost like if I just
8:19
Speaker 6: grabbed you in the middle of your work day and said, hey,
8:21
Speaker 6: come over here and stand for five seconds. That's what
8:23
Speaker 6: I want these to look like. I don't want them
8:25
Speaker 6: to look too posed or too pretty. I just want
8:28
Speaker 6: a good, honest look at who we are right now.
8:30
Speaker 2: And who are we as Americans? There's the loaded question
8:33
Speaker 2: right there, but who are we as Americans right now,
8:35
Speaker 2: in your opinion?
8:35
Speaker 6: You know, I've spent so far 18 months trying to
8:38
Speaker 6: answer that question, and all I've come up with are
8:40
Speaker 6: more questions. And I kind of like it that way.
8:43
Speaker 6: I don't want to answer the question. I want to
8:45
Speaker 6: kind of put the archive out there and let people
8:47
Speaker 6: figure that out for themselves.
8:49
Speaker 2: And, you know, America is a very, and this is
8:52
Speaker 2: going to be the most, the biggest understatement of the year,
8:55
Speaker 2: America is a very diverse place. And like you said,
8:57
Speaker 2: you talked about being with rattlesnakes in Oklahoma, is that
9:00
Speaker 2: where you were?
9:01
Speaker 7: In Oklahoma, yeah.
9:01
Speaker 2: And you couldn't get any more different than downtown New
9:06
Speaker 2: York City in the heart of it all and somewhere
9:08
Speaker 2: in Montana. I'm just using those as examples, which I'm
9:12
Speaker 2: sure you've discovered.
9:13
Speaker 1: Yeah.
9:13
Speaker 6: You know, we are a massive universe all packed into
9:17
Speaker 6: these 50 states. And everywhere you go, you meet some
9:20
Speaker 6: people that you're like, I've met this person. You know,
9:23
Speaker 6: if I'm in Missouri, I've met somebody just like them
9:25
Speaker 6: in Florida. Or if I'm in Indiana, I've met somebody
9:27
Speaker 6: just like in Arizona. Or sometimes you get the people like,
9:30
Speaker 6: you are unique to this location.
9:32
Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
9:33
Speaker 6: And so it's just really fascinating. I don't think there
9:35
Speaker 6: is a single answer to who America is because we
9:40
Speaker 6: are multitudes.
9:41
Speaker 2: And I have always said this, and you were talking
9:42
Speaker 2: with Aaron Patton, I have always said this, that America
9:46
Speaker 2: is not who's in the White House. America is not
9:49
Speaker 2: who is the professional, the top football player in America.
9:53
Speaker 2: It's not the top rock star, the top actor. America
9:56
Speaker 2: is the guy that works in the factory. This is
9:58
Speaker 2: my opinion. You may not agree. America is the guy
10:00
Speaker 2: that works in the factory. America is the lady that's
10:03
Speaker 2: waiting tables. It's the person that's the school teacher that's
10:05
Speaker 2: in the army, the police officer. That to me is
10:08
Speaker 2: who America is. Not to get too deep, but that's
10:10
Speaker 2: who America really, that's who makes up America.
10:13
Speaker 1: Yeah.
10:13
Speaker 6: We get focused on these kind of iconic celebrity types,
10:17
Speaker 6: but that's such a small percentage of what we are.
10:19
Speaker 6: And the rest of us down here, we make up
10:21
Speaker 6: the fabric of the country. Not that I would exclude
10:24
Speaker 6: a celebrity from the project. I've actually had, since I
10:28
Speaker 6: don't name names, I don't throw it out there too much,
10:30
Speaker 6: but I've had Grammy winners. I've had, you know, some,
10:34
Speaker 6: wild different types of people, but they all get the
10:36
Speaker 6: same label. You know, that's just musician in the archives.
10:38
Speaker 2: You never know. I love that. What's been, you talked
10:41
Speaker 2: about the, again, I keep going back to the rattlesnakes
10:43
Speaker 2: in Oklahoma, but as far as the people go, what's
10:48
Speaker 2: been some of the more interesting things that you have seen?
10:50
Speaker 2: Or maybe the cities that you've gone to. Give me
10:52
Speaker 2: a couple of things that you've said, well, I wasn't
10:54
Speaker 2: expecting that.
10:55
Speaker 6: Well, right off the bat, the fourth person we photographed
10:58
Speaker 6: for this project when I was first kind of putting
11:00
Speaker 6: the idea out there in Wichita, Kansas, I got a
11:05
Speaker 6: from somebody who said their job is trimming the hooves
11:07
Speaker 6: of mini pigs. And I was like, that's different. Didn't
11:10
Speaker 6: expect that. But she goes 23 states, has a whole
11:13
Speaker 6: circuit of clients where she just goes around and she's
11:15
Speaker 6: a mini pig farrier. And so we ended up going
11:18
Speaker 6: to her house and she just right there in the
11:21
Speaker 6: middle of the place, flipped a pig over, started sawing
11:23
Speaker 6: off a tusk and I photographed the whole thing. It
11:26
Speaker 6: was a good time.
11:26
Speaker 2: And I bet if you live to be 300, you'll
11:28
Speaker 2: never encounter that again.
11:30
Speaker 6: You know, that's probably a good bet.
11:31
Speaker 2: Yeah. So how's your time? You got to West Virginia when? Yesterday,
11:35
Speaker 2: I think?
11:35
Speaker 12: Yeah, yeah.
11:35
Speaker 2: You and I were talking on the phone. I think
11:37
Speaker 2: you were getting into town yesterday. How's your experience in
11:40
Speaker 2: Charleston been? Everybody being good to you?
11:41
Speaker 7: It's been a good time.
11:42
Speaker 2: We're normally very inclusive people as far as welcoming people
11:45
Speaker 2: in and asking about who's your mom and that kind
11:47
Speaker 2: of stuff. Probably not going to find yours here, but
11:49
Speaker 2: I'm just saying. Your experience been good so far?
11:51
Speaker 1: Definitely.
11:52
Speaker 6: We went to Tudor's Biscuit House.
11:54
Speaker 2: I was going to say, you got to go to Tudor's.
11:56
Speaker 6: Got to check it out. So we went there, had
11:57
Speaker 6: a good time, hit some of the breweries last night.
12:01
Speaker 6: Got to check out the local flavor. That's been great.
12:03
Speaker 2: We got in downtown Charleston specifically, I know we get
12:05
Speaker 2: some really good breweries downtown. And it's an emerging industry here.
12:10
Speaker 2: We kind of got in on it late, but we
12:12
Speaker 2: got several good places downtown. And one thing about West Virginia,
12:15
Speaker 2: you won't starve to death. And I'm glad to know
12:17
Speaker 2: you discovered Tudors because that is an institution.
12:20
Speaker 6: Is that right?
12:21
Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah.
12:22
Speaker 6: We just kind of happened upon it. We were just
12:23
Speaker 6: walking around near Elk City and it was like, well,
12:25
Speaker 6: Biscuit House sounds like a great place to check out.
12:27
Speaker 2: And what'd you have? Do you remember what you had?
12:28
Speaker 6: Chicken biscuit and biscuits and gravy.
12:30
Speaker 2: Okay. There you go. Do you have a lot of
12:31
Speaker 2: biscuits and gravy in Kansas?
12:33
Speaker 6: Not as many as you'd think. I grew up on them,
12:35
Speaker 6: but it's not as common as you think.
12:37
Speaker 11: Okay.
12:37
Speaker 2: All right. Give us the time that you'll be at
12:39
Speaker 2: the library again this evening.
12:40
Speaker 6: 4 to 7 p.m. at the Kanawha County Public Library
12:43
Speaker 6: on the fourth floor.
12:44
Speaker 2: Right downtown.
12:44
Speaker 6: Right downtown on Capitol.
12:46

15:57
Speaker 2: you forgot about the backbone of America, the farmers. I
15:59
Speaker 2: was just kind of throwing things off the top of
16:01
Speaker 2: my head there, but I do appreciate the recommendation there. Texas,
16:04
Speaker 2: the photo guy needs to go to whichever jail is
16:07
Speaker 2: holding the infamous TikTok couple who burned down the house
16:10
Speaker 2: on Maryland Avenue yesterday. Let's do a perfect metaphor, representatives
16:13
Speaker 2: of Charles. I saw that last night. That's just a
16:17
Speaker 2: bizarre story. It's been all the talk around the region
16:21
Speaker 2: over the past few days. A person from our area
16:23
Speaker 2: goes on Wheel of Fortune the other night, wins big.
16:26
Speaker 2: Her name is Autumn Martin, and she joins us this
16:27
Speaker 2: morning via the Guarantee Bank hotline. Autumn, good morning, and
16:30
Speaker 2: welcome to the show. Hi.
16:32
Speaker 11: Hello. Thank you for having me.
16:34
Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. So tell us how you
16:36
Speaker 2: ended up going on Wheel of Fortune, and why did
16:38
Speaker 2: you want to go on it in the first place?
16:41
Speaker 11: Uh, so I wanted to go on it because it
16:44
Speaker 11: has been my favorite show for a very long time. Um,
16:49
Speaker 11: anybody that knows me knows that I don't really watch TV.
16:52
Speaker 11: I'm not really a Netflix girl. I don't really, I
16:55
Speaker 11: just don't, I don't, I don't really watch TV, but
16:58
Speaker 11: the one show that I watch every single day is
17:01
Speaker 11: Will of Fortune from seven to seven 30. I am
17:03
Speaker 11: locked into that show and it's just, it's, it's always
17:07
Speaker 11: been my favorite. So that's, that's why I wanted to
17:10
Speaker 11: go on.
17:11
Speaker 2: Take us through the process of how someone from here
17:14
Speaker 2: ends up out there on Wheel of Fortune.
17:17
Speaker 11: So it's kind of crazy. I actually applied in December
17:21
Speaker 11: of 2024. And I had Zoom auditions in January of 2025.
17:28
Speaker 11: And they told me, if you don't hear back from
17:30
Speaker 11: us within a year, it means that you did not
17:32
Speaker 11: get selected for this season, but you can always reapply
17:35
Speaker 11: after a year. So I'd never heard anything back within
17:40
Speaker 11: a year. And so I thought I just didn't get selected.
17:42
Speaker 11: And And my grandmother was ill. And so I told myself,
17:46
Speaker 11: I'll just wait until, you know, after things settle down
17:49
Speaker 11: with my grandma and then I'll reapply. Well, my grandmother
17:52
Speaker 11: passed away on July 17th. And on July 20th, I
17:55
Speaker 11: got an email saying that I was selected to be
17:58
Speaker 11: a contestant on the Wheel of Fortune.
18:00
Speaker 2: And your grandmother, not to get too personal here, but
18:03
Speaker 2: I have, but I was trying to, you know, get
18:06
Speaker 2: in contact with you. I noticed your grandmother was a very,
18:08
Speaker 2: very big part of your life. It seems in looking
18:09
Speaker 2: at the photographs I saw.
18:12
Speaker 11: Yes, she was. She was definitely my person. And so
18:16
Speaker 11: it was it was a very hard loss. And my
18:20
Speaker 11: birthday was actually the day before we taped Will of
18:23
Speaker 11: Fortune on August 18th. And on July 20th, you know,
18:27
Speaker 11: that was just a few days after she had passed.
18:29
Speaker 11: I was very emotional and I was having a rough
18:32
Speaker 11: day and I was just like, oh, this is going
18:34
Speaker 11: to be the worst birthday ever. It's my first birthday
18:37
Speaker 11: without my mama. And I had actually torn my Achilles
18:41
Speaker 11: on June 24th. So I also wasn't walking at the time.
18:44
Speaker 11: And I was just, you know, kind of throwing a
18:46
Speaker 11: pity party for myself. And then that email comes through
18:49
Speaker 11: and I'm like, oh my gosh, like it's You know,
18:52
Speaker 11: now I'm going to be flying to L.A. on my
18:54
Speaker 11: birthday and then recording my dream show on the next day.
18:59
Speaker 11: So it was just kind of it was kind of crazy.
19:02
Speaker 2: Take us through the behind the scenes. I mean, how
19:05
Speaker 2: does the whole thing work from, you know, from the camera?
19:08
Speaker 2: We only see the 22 minute or so product that's after,
19:12
Speaker 2: you know, the commercials. I mean, before the commercials, I
19:14
Speaker 2: should say. So the show's like 22 minutes long or
19:16
Speaker 2: something like that. Take us through what it's like, you know,
19:19
Speaker 2: from the time you walk into the studio. I mean,
19:21
Speaker 2: how do they greet you? What exactly goes on there?
19:25
Speaker 11: So we had to be at the studio at 6.30 a.m.
19:30
Speaker 11: la time which is 3 30 a.m west virginia time
19:34
Speaker 11: um and so that was that was definitely uh fun
19:39
Speaker 11: um or wait no i think i got that opposite
19:41
Speaker 11: no that's 9 30 a.m okay.
19:43
Speaker 2: Okay uh you're on a roll i wasn't going to
19:45
Speaker 2: correct you but go ahead.
19:46
Speaker 11: Yeah yeah i was like wait a second but yes
19:48
Speaker 11: we had to be there at 6 38 L.A. time. But
19:53
Speaker 11: that's still kind of early for me.
19:54
Speaker 2: Sure, okay.
19:56
Speaker 11: And we had to basically sit in this room and
20:00
Speaker 11: for a very long time and we had to speak
20:03
Speaker 11: to the legal team and they had to go over
20:05
Speaker 11: all the rules with us and we had to sign
20:08
Speaker 11: a bunch of paperwork and all that. And we were
20:10
Speaker 11: in this room for a couple of hours and you're
20:13
Speaker 11: in the room with all the contestants and there's hair
20:16
Speaker 11: and makeup and they're kind of sending us one by
20:19
Speaker 11: one to hair and makeup while the rest of us
20:21
Speaker 11: are doing paperwork. But I will say they run it
20:26
Speaker 11: very well to where you're not like, oh, gosh, this
20:29
Speaker 11: is boring. You know, I'm falling asleep. And every single
20:34
Speaker 11: person that I encountered on the Wheel of Fortune staff
20:38
Speaker 11: was so nice, so warm and welcoming, so friendly. Yeah,
20:43
Speaker 11: it was it was great. And they take us to
20:48
Speaker 11: the studio before we even go to tape. And we
20:53
Speaker 11: practice every single person practices. We practice our bios, like
20:58
Speaker 11: what we're going to talk to Ryan about. We practice
21:01
Speaker 11: spinning the wheel. We practice calling letters. We practice toss-ups.
21:05
Speaker 11: So they make sure that you're prepared before you take
21:08
Speaker 11: the stage.
21:08
Speaker 2: You know, I've always been interested as a geek in
21:11
Speaker 2: this sort of thing when it comes to what the
21:12
Speaker 2: studios are actually like, because I've talked to people that
21:15
Speaker 2: have gone on, let's say, talk shows, for example, just
21:18
Speaker 2: as an audience member. And they'll say, well, the studio
21:20
Speaker 2: was much bigger on television than I expected. It was
21:23
Speaker 2: no more than a theater when I got there. And
21:25
Speaker 2: other people said, my God, it was almost like in
21:28
Speaker 2: some sort of a dome or something. Was the studio,
21:31
Speaker 2: when you physically walked in, was it what you thought
21:33
Speaker 2: it would be? Was it not what you thought it
21:35
Speaker 2: would be?
21:37
Speaker 11: It was very small. So it was actually much smaller
21:40
Speaker 11: than I think it looks on camera. When you're watching
21:45
Speaker 11: on TV, it kind of looks pretty big, but it's
21:49
Speaker 11: actually very small. I would say it's about as big
21:52
Speaker 11: as a... middle school or high school basketball gyms, to
21:56
Speaker 11: be honest. All right.
21:58
Speaker 2: And approximately how many people are in the audience watching?
22:01
Speaker 2: I mean, just approximately, maybe is it a full house
22:03
Speaker 2: or is it just, you know, a hundred people? I mean,
22:05
Speaker 2: how many people are actually watching?
22:07
Speaker 11: So the audience is actually, it's a very small area.
22:13
Speaker 11: It's just kind of like up in the bleachers. Like
22:16
Speaker 11: they're not actually, you know, down low with us. They're
22:18
Speaker 11: up in kind of in bleachers and rafters. And You
22:23
Speaker 11: would kind of split the audience up into about three groups.
22:25
Speaker 11: One side is the contestants that are competing that day
22:29
Speaker 11: because there's 20 people that are there because they taped
22:31
Speaker 11: six shows.
22:31
Speaker 2: That's what I was going to ask you. It's going
22:33
Speaker 2: to be my next question. They taped several in one day, right?
22:35
Speaker 11: Yeah, six in one day. So there were 18 of
22:38
Speaker 11: us as contestants and two alternates there. And so that's
22:40
Speaker 11: kind of one side of the audience. And then there's
22:43
Speaker 11: the live audience that if you were just in L.A.
22:45
Speaker 11: and you just wanted to just go watch Wheel of Fortune,
22:47
Speaker 11: that's like the middle section of the audience. And then
22:51
Speaker 11: the far right side, if you're facing the audience, is
22:55
Speaker 11: the friends and family of all the contestants.
22:57
Speaker 2: Okay.
22:58
Speaker 8: All right.
22:59
Speaker 2: So they have an alternate. I mean, is that like
23:01
Speaker 2: when somebody has a panic attack and just drops? I mean,
23:04
Speaker 2: what's the deal with the alternate?
23:05
Speaker 1: Yeah.
23:07
Speaker 11: Basically, they told us there were actually supposed to be
23:09
Speaker 11: three alternates, but only two showed up. They always have
23:14
Speaker 11: alternates in case somebody gets sick or somebody chickens out
23:19
Speaker 11: or anything. They've got to have people ready to go
23:23
Speaker 11: to step in. I thought it was kind of cool.
23:25
Speaker 11: The alternates actually get paid to be there regardless. Oh, okay. And, yeah,
23:31
Speaker 11: typically the alternates are, like, in the L.A.
23:33
Speaker 4: Area.
23:34
Speaker 2: Okay.
23:34
Speaker 11: So, you know, they didn't have to pay anything to
23:36
Speaker 11: be there.
23:37
Speaker 2: That's a good living if you can do it just
23:38
Speaker 2: to go and sit in a studio. So as far as, like,
23:43
Speaker 2: the way that they record it, is it, like, all
23:45
Speaker 2: in real time? Do they stop it at any point?
23:48
Speaker 2: I mean, or is it just okay as if it
23:50
Speaker 2: were live? You know, I mean, is that the way
23:52
Speaker 2: it's done?
23:54
Speaker 11: No. So we do stop after every puzzle ends. Once
24:00
Speaker 11: they're solved, we stop, take a little break. They, you know,
24:05
Speaker 11: do what they need to do to the wheel. They
24:07
Speaker 11: do hair and makeup to us, you know, get Ryan
24:11
Speaker 11: and Vanna touched up, and then we go right. It's
24:13
Speaker 11: like a less than two-minute break.
24:17
Speaker 2: I mean, it's basically like a commercial break, basically, you know,
24:20
Speaker 2: for all intents and purposes. I know this is the
24:24
Speaker 2: question you're probably going to get from most people and
24:26
Speaker 2: have already, but I'm going to go ahead and throw
24:27
Speaker 2: it out there. Did you get to meet Ryan and
24:29
Speaker 2: Vanna and hang out with them at all?
24:33
Speaker 11: Vanna came out when we were practicing. She came out
24:37
Speaker 11: and waved to us and wished us good luck. That
24:42
Speaker 11: was really cute. But I didn't get to really talk
24:46
Speaker 11: to them aside from on the show. On the actual show,
24:52
Speaker 11: everything you see me talking to them. And then It
24:55
Speaker 11: was kind of funny. I was talking to Ryan before
24:58
Speaker 11: my bonus round, and he told me that he went
25:01
Speaker 11: backstage and actually tried to call Lance Bass that I
25:05
Speaker 11: had mentioned from NSYNC because he was going to have
25:08
Speaker 11: Lance talk to me before the bonus round. But Lance
25:12
Speaker 11: was busy and was not able to.
25:13
Speaker 2: Oh, well, you know. Yeah. So what is your fascination,
25:17
Speaker 2: if you don't mind me asking, with Lance Bass? Of course,
25:18
Speaker 2: he was with NSYNC, as you said. Is it just
25:21
Speaker 2: somebody that you like?
25:23
Speaker 11: Yes. So he, it's kind of funny, he was my
25:26
Speaker 11: literal first crush because I was eight years old when NSYNC,
25:31
Speaker 11: you know, came to be. And so I was just
25:34
Speaker 11: infatuated with Lance. I would always cut him out of
25:37
Speaker 11: all the group photos and tape him to my wall
25:40
Speaker 11: right beside of Britney Spears.
25:41
Speaker 2: Oh, of course.
25:42
Speaker 11: And, you know, he was just my favorite. And so,
25:44
Speaker 11: you know, obviously I am definitely not his type.
25:49
Speaker 2: That's one way to put it.
25:50
Speaker 11: Yeah. Yeah. And you know, he's very happily married. So
25:53
Speaker 11: I just think that we could be best friends and
25:56
Speaker 11: I just adore him. And so, you know, I'm still
25:59
Speaker 11: waiting to hear from him, but I do have my
26:03
Speaker 11: fingers crossed.
26:03
Speaker 2: What was your comfort level as far as going through
26:06
Speaker 2: the game? I mean, for those that didn't see it,
26:08
Speaker 2: cause I mean, it's a highly rated show and not
26:10
Speaker 2: everybody was watching it, but you know, maybe they missed it. Talk,
26:13
Speaker 2: talk about your, your, your part in the game, your
26:15
Speaker 2: comfort level, uh, easy, hard, what you thought it would be.
26:20
Speaker 2: Take us through that.
26:23
Speaker 11: So I literally, like I said, I watch Wheel of
26:25
Speaker 11: Fortune every day and I try to say the puzzles.
26:29
Speaker 11: Like I try to, you know, get them before the
26:31
Speaker 11: contestants on the show and I'm pretty good at it.
26:34
Speaker 11: You know, I'm saying the puzzles and then, you know,
26:37
Speaker 11: three minutes later they're solving them. I've always just been
26:40
Speaker 11: good at, you know, the processing part and plugging letters
26:43
Speaker 11: in and Um, and what's crazy is, you know, I
26:47
Speaker 11: was episode one of the day and I didn't, I
26:50
Speaker 11: didn't want to be episode one. I was hoping for
26:53
Speaker 11: episode two or three. Um, I made a friend at
26:56
Speaker 11: the show. Uh, his name's David. He's actually going to
26:58
Speaker 11: be on tonight. So everyone should watch my friend David tonight. Um,
27:02
Speaker 11: but me and David were sitting beside of each other
27:04
Speaker 11: and we were like, oh, I hope we're episodes two
27:06
Speaker 11: or three. That way, you know, we can watch episode
27:09
Speaker 11: one to kind of get a feel for it. And then,
27:11
Speaker 11: you know, do our episode and then be done for
27:13
Speaker 11: the day. Well, David got episode three and I got
27:15
Speaker 11: episode one. And so, you know, I was episode one.
27:19
Speaker 11: So we were in hair and makeup and I was
27:22
Speaker 11: a little nervous at the time. And then I go
27:25
Speaker 11: to take the stage and a Taylor Swift song is playing.
27:28
Speaker 11: And it's like, I just felt all of my nerves
27:31
Speaker 11: leave my body. And I was just locked in. I
27:34
Speaker 11: was like, I came here to compete. And my goal
27:39
Speaker 11: was to make it. to the bonus round.
27:42
Speaker 2: I mean, they need to recognize that you're from West Virginia.
27:44
Speaker 2: And if you don't win, you'll just start kicking somebody's
27:47
Speaker 2: butt because that's what we do in West Virginia, right?
27:49
Speaker 2: I mean, I'll turn this wheel over right now.
27:52
Speaker 11: Yeah, I'm going to flip the 2,400-pound wheel because I'm
27:58
Speaker 11: the most competitive person in the world. But what was
28:01
Speaker 11: crazy is You know, I'm also an empath. And so
28:05
Speaker 11: it pained me that my competitor, Jordan, didn't get to
28:09
Speaker 11: solve any puzzles and he didn't win any money. Like,
28:11
Speaker 11: it absolutely pained me. I wanted everybody to win.
28:14
Speaker 4: Right.
28:14
Speaker 11: Yeah. You know, in a perfect world, Jordan would have
28:18
Speaker 11: got at least one of the toss ups that would
28:19
Speaker 11: have made me happy.
28:20
Speaker 2: So what did you end up winning on the show?
28:22
Speaker 2: Because you won it that day. So what did you win?
28:25
Speaker 11: I won a trip to Thailand, which is crazy. And
28:30
Speaker 11: then I won, I think it was like.
28:35
Speaker 11: I won $ 26, 000 in cash and prizes, but that included
28:40
Speaker 11: the $ 10, 000 trip to Thailand. So I won around $ 16, 000
28:43
Speaker 11: in cash before the bonus round, and then I won $ 40, 000
28:47
Speaker 11: in the bonus round.
28:49
Speaker 2: Now, I know it's just like a one-night thing, but
28:52
Speaker 2: do they have like a tournament of champions? Will you
28:54
Speaker 2: be invited back at some point? Do they do that
28:56
Speaker 2: with that show?
28:57
Speaker 11: So the only thing that they have had in the
29:00
Speaker 11: past is they've had fan favorites come back and you
29:05
Speaker 11: come back in teams. So like if a mother and
29:09
Speaker 11: a daughter both won or like, you know, a husband
29:12
Speaker 11: and a wife both won or something like that. like
29:15
Speaker 11: you can come back. But I actually have a pretty
29:18
Speaker 11: crazy story. My best friend, like through childhood, through high school,
29:24
Speaker 11: through college, everything, he won in 2019. And he actually
29:27
Speaker 11: trained me for this. And we both won $ 66, 000. We
29:29
Speaker 11: both called the same letters in the bonus round. We
29:32
Speaker 11: both had white vehicles that we could have won. Um,
29:43
Speaker 11: we also both were losing, um, going into the prize
29:47
Speaker 11: puzzle round, um, and ended up winning. And this is
29:52
Speaker 11: the also crazy part. His grandmother passed away before his
29:55
Speaker 11: episode aired. Just, just like mine. Wow. So Yeah, we
30:00
Speaker 11: were looking back on that, and we were like, oh,
30:02
Speaker 11: my goodness, like so many parallels.
30:04
Speaker 2: It was crazy. What was your puzzle? What was the
30:08
Speaker 2: word you had to solve there, or the phrase at
30:09
Speaker 2: the end?
30:10
Speaker 11: It was, what are you doing? And my puzzle was beaming. Beaming.
30:16
Speaker 2: Okay. I mean, that seems a little different, but I mean. Yeah. Okay.
30:23
Speaker 2: All right. So overall, great experience for you, Autumn? I mean, obviously,
30:27
Speaker 2: it sounds like it was.
30:28
Speaker 7: Oh, yes.
30:28
Speaker 11: I mean, from start to finish, you know, I was
30:31
Speaker 11: in a boot because I had torn my Achilles and
30:34
Speaker 11: they were so accommodating of my injury. You know, I
30:38
Speaker 11: thought I was going to go out there and they
30:39
Speaker 11: were like, oh, this girl's hurt, you know. Like, we
30:43
Speaker 11: wish that we had a player that wasn't hurt, but
30:45
Speaker 11: it was the exact opposite. They were so kind, so accommodating.
30:49
Speaker 11: You know, they made me feel so comfortable. And it
30:52
Speaker 11: was just it was great from start to finish. And
30:55
Speaker 11: you never know what you're going to get out in Hollywood,
30:57
Speaker 11: you know. So I was really thankful that my favorite
31:00
Speaker 11: show left me with such a great experience.
31:04
Speaker 2: Well, that's awesome. I mean, it was all the talk,
31:06
Speaker 2: you know, that you were going on this show. You
31:08
Speaker 2: have quite a following on social media anyway, and it
31:10
Speaker 2: was all the talk. Everybody was, and my phone was
31:12
Speaker 2: blowing up, you know, people saying, hey, you got to have,
31:15
Speaker 2: you got to have Autumn on, you got to have
31:17
Speaker 2: this girl on. And so I appreciate you. And I
31:20
Speaker 2: didn't really, I'll be honest with you. I didn't have
31:22
Speaker 2: a lot of, because I've done things similar to this
31:24
Speaker 2: in the past. And sometimes it's a process, man, because
31:27
Speaker 2: I can't just, I didn't know you, so I can't
31:29
Speaker 2: just call you up and There's a process anyway that
31:31
Speaker 2: you have to go through the producers of the show
31:34
Speaker 2: so that they will allow you to do it. But
31:36
Speaker 2: the people out there were cool. I mean, literally, you
31:38
Speaker 2: sent me the email address. I sent it to them.
31:42
Speaker 2: And in like five minutes, they said, sure, just no
31:44
Speaker 2: spoiler alerts. That's all they said was just no spoiler.
31:47
Speaker 2: But I mean, it's after the fact. I don't know
31:48
Speaker 2: what I can spoil, you know, other than your undying
31:51
Speaker 2: love for Lance Bass. I don't know. And I don't
31:54
Speaker 2: know what else I could spoil. Well, it was great
31:57
Speaker 2: to have you on the show, and I know you're
31:58
Speaker 2: busy today. You took time out to be here with us.
32:01
Speaker 2: Thanks a lot. You made West Virginia very proud. And
32:03
Speaker 2: enjoy your winnings. Enjoy that trip to Thailand. Spoiler alert here, though,
32:07
Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you, I don't think they have
32:09
Speaker 2: a Tudor's Biscuit World there, just so you know.
32:11
Speaker 11: Oh, that's diabolical because I eat Tudor's Biscuits pretty much
32:16
Speaker 11: every day, so that's going to be rough for me.
32:18
Speaker 11: All right.
32:19
Speaker 2: Well, Autumn, congratulations. Thank you for being on the show.
32:21
Speaker 2: We'll talk soon.
32:22
Speaker 7: Thanks a lot.
32:23
Speaker 11: Thank you so much.
32:25
Speaker 2: Autumn Martin, again, she was on Wheel of Fortune and
32:28
Speaker 2: won her some cash and won a trip to Thailand. Unfortunately,
32:32
Speaker 2: did not get to meet Lance Bass, and she did
32:33
Speaker 2: not also get to meet Ryan Seacrest, apparently. So there
32:36
Speaker 2: you go. Appreciate her being here. 20 minutes away from 10,

Speaker 13: Hey, this is Bobbi Spry, and last year we purchased
33:43
Speaker 13: a new HVAC system from Best Virginia Heating and Cooling.
33:46
Speaker 13: During the inspection of our old unit, their technician discovered
33:49
Speaker 13: a crack in the heat exchanger that was slowly leaking
33:52
Speaker 13: carbon monoxide into our home. From that moment on, we
33:55
Speaker 13: knew we chose the best. The best technicians and the
33:58
Speaker 13: best service. Every technician is drug tested and background checked,

34:14
Speaker 14: We know how polarizing politics has become. More than ever,
34:16
Speaker 14: we need common sense leaders in government who focus on

Speaker 14: what really matters to you and your family. I've built
34:21
Speaker 14: a record on being that kind of person. Whether it's
34:23
Speaker 14: initiatives to protect children or legislation to help local small
34:27
Speaker 14: businesses thrive, I work on what you care about. It's
34:29
Speaker 14: what I care about too.
34:31
Speaker 2: I'm J.B.
34:31
Speaker 14: Akers, and I will be honored to again have your
34:33
Speaker 14: vote in November and work together to make our local
34:35
Speaker 14: government a positive example of something to be proud of.
34:38
Speaker 14: Paid for by J.B. Akers for West Virginia.
34:41
Speaker 15: Winter storms can bury roads, shut down the grid, and

35:36
Speaker 2: I got to give a big shout out here. I
35:38
Speaker 2: just was quickly during the break there perusing the socials,
35:42
Speaker 2: as they say, and John Jarrett, owner of Jarrett Construction,
35:46
Speaker 2: Of course, we do the show from the Jarrett Construction Studios.
35:49
Speaker 2: Right on time, right on budget, visit JarrettAirsConstruction.com. That's WV0031133133,
35:55
Speaker 2: something like that. But anyway, John's celebrating a birthday today. So, Mr. Jarrett,
35:59
Speaker 2: happy birthday to you. Coming up later today, Metro News
36:02
Speaker 2: Midday with Amanda Barron and me, powered by Selangor Law.
36:05
Speaker 2: It's Wednesday. Mindy, we're going to introduce you to this
36:07
Speaker 2: week's wonderful West Virginian. Jeff Jenkins has the news. TJ
36:10
Speaker 2: Meadows is here with commentary. And you can read his
36:12
Speaker 2: commentary online. over at the website. If you didn't hear
36:16
Speaker 2: it on air this morning, TJ asked a very good question.
36:21
Speaker 2: And that is, we all hear what West Virginians are against.
36:26
Speaker 2: We don't want data centers. We don't want nuclear. We
36:29
Speaker 2: don't want coal. We don't want solar. We don't want windmills. Well,
36:32
Speaker 2: what exactly do we want? And as TJ points out,
36:37
Speaker 2: you can't be against everything if you hope to grow.
36:41
Speaker 2: Great commentary from Meadows. He'll join us to talk about
36:43
Speaker 2: it on the show today. I would urge you to
36:45
Speaker 2: go to the website and read it if you haven't
36:47
Speaker 2: heard it already or didn't read it already this morning
36:49
Speaker 2: or hear it on the air. Last night, the Putnam
36:52
Speaker 2: County Commission met and adopted a resolution as it comes
36:55
Speaker 2: to data centers. Of course, the big one there is
36:57
Speaker 2: the Google Data Center plan for Buffalo. Putnam County Commission
37:00
Speaker 2: President Andy Skidmore is going to join us on the
37:02
Speaker 2: show to talk about it again today. We are talking
37:05
Speaker 2: about SNAP benefits and possible reductions of such, Seth. DeStefano,
37:10
Speaker 2: who is the Senior Policy Outreach Director for the West
37:12
Speaker 2: Virginia Center on Budget and Policy, is going to join us.
37:15
Speaker 2: Fred Persinger here to kick off your high school football
37:17
Speaker 2: week as he and Joe Bricado and the team will
37:18
Speaker 2: have high school sports line tonight. Fred will be stopping
37:21
Speaker 2: by and more on Metro News Midday presented by Salango Law.
37:24
Speaker 2: Programming notes, I will not be here tomorrow or Friday.
37:28
Speaker 2: Dale Cooper is in for me, I think, the next
37:31
Speaker 2: couple days. I will be somewhere on a beach, somewhere
37:34
Speaker 2: with a drink in my hand. Can't be too far
37:37
Speaker 2: because I'm only off two days. Tomorrow and Friday, I
37:40
Speaker 2: will be back, though, on Monday. The Dave Allen Show
37:43
Speaker 2: and 580 Live is brought to you in part by
37:45
Speaker 2: the all-new Generations Ford of Hurricane. Visit generationsford.com. Back to
37:49
Speaker 2: Putnam County for just a moment. And Jack Carlson has
37:52
Speaker 2: a story posted about it at wvmetronews.com. Last night, the
37:56
Speaker 2: Putnam County Commission officially adopted a resolution on proposed data centers. Now,
38:03
Speaker 2: the resolution came about after the group Putnam United had
38:07
Speaker 2: presented a resolution of their own last month to the
38:10
Speaker 2: commission that would ask data centers to be evaluated on
38:14
Speaker 2: more than just the money aspect of it, so to speak.
38:17
Speaker 2: So what the commission's resolution says, and it actually In
38:22
Speaker 2: my opinion, reading it this morning goes above and beyond
38:25
Speaker 2: even what House Bill 2014 that was passed does. Some
38:30
Speaker 2: of the points in the resolution, and again, you can
38:32
Speaker 2: read the entire thing for yourself as part of Jack's story, wvmetronews.com.
38:36
Speaker 2: Data centers will pay their own way by funding 100%
38:40
Speaker 2: of the water, the sewer, the power upgrades, et cetera,
38:45
Speaker 2: as needed. In other words, the taxpayers won't be on
38:49
Speaker 2: the hook for them. There will be extra protections for water,
38:53
Speaker 2: even more, this is important, even more than what state
38:57
Speaker 2: and federal regulations call for. Some sound dampening enclosures will
39:04
Speaker 2: be required. And again, it's a whole list of things,
39:06
Speaker 2: not going to read the entire thing, but you can
39:08
Speaker 2: go to jackstorywvmetronews.com and read it for yourself. Now, the
39:12
Speaker 2: commission says Google, which is planning the big data center there,
39:15
Speaker 2: is all on board so far with all of this.
39:20
Speaker 2: Of course, Google, if you recall, pretty much opened the
39:23
Speaker 2: checkbook already in Putnam County, particularly Buffalo, providing free entry
39:28
Speaker 2: to athletic events for students at Buffalo Highlands. High School,
39:30
Speaker 2: a bunch of other stuff. So it looks like welcome
39:34
Speaker 2: to Putnam County for the Google Data Center. The Dave
39:37
Speaker 2: Allen Show on 580 Live is brought to you in
39:39
Speaker 2: part by Morgan & Morgan, America's largest injury law firm.
39:42
Speaker 2: If you're injured, visit ForThePeople.com. Text said, add legal recreational
39:48
Speaker 2: cannabis to the list of things West Virginia doesn't want. Well,
39:51
Speaker 2: that's a fair point. That's a fair, fair point. And look,
39:55
Speaker 2: going along with what TJ said, and he's going to
39:57
Speaker 2: join me a little bit later on the show, and
39:58
Speaker 2: as I said, he'll join us on midday today as well.
40:02
Speaker 2: That's what we hear a lot of in West Virginia.
40:05
Speaker 2: And I am all about citizens getting involved. If you're
40:07
Speaker 2: concerned about what's coming to your community, what's going on
40:09
Speaker 2: in your community, you have every right to speak out.
40:12
Speaker 2: You have every right, if you don't like what's going on,
40:14
Speaker 2: with your school system. You have every right to go
40:18
Speaker 2: to the Board of Education. You have every right to
40:19
Speaker 2: go to county commissions, city councils, whatever the case may be.
40:23
Speaker 2: But it seems like all we hear is people that are,
40:26
Speaker 2: as we would say in southern West Virginia, against it.
40:29
Speaker 2: We're against it. Well, at some point, if you want
40:33
Speaker 2: this state to grow, we are going to have to
40:35
Speaker 2: be for some of this stuff. I'm sorry. not trying
40:39
Speaker 2: to be the bad guy here, but we can't constantly say,
40:42
Speaker 2: we don't want that here, we don't want that here,
40:45
Speaker 2: while the state continues to suffer because of people saying
40:51
Speaker 2: we don't want things here. Again, I'm not saying you
40:53
Speaker 2: open up the floodgates and you invite every Tom, Dick,
40:56
Speaker 2: and Harry company to come in and do the stuff.
40:58
Speaker 2: I'm just saying we've got to have some open conversations.
41:01
Speaker 2: And I know some of these groups have. I mentioned
41:03
Speaker 2: Putnam United, for example. They've actually had, from what I understand,
41:07
Speaker 2: we'll talk to Commissioner Skidmore, on midday today, they have
41:10
Speaker 2: actually had some really good back and forth. And I
41:12
Speaker 2: mean that in the best possible way, discussions with the
41:15
Speaker 2: County Commission. It's the way things are supposed to work.
41:18
Speaker 2: And I may, somebody may be listening right now going, well,
41:20
Speaker 2: that's not what really happened. Just on the surface, what
41:23
Speaker 2: I am seeing is it looks like that that group
41:26
Speaker 2: has been working with the County Commission. The County Commission
41:28
Speaker 2: has been listening to them saying, okay, we understand your concerns.
41:31
Speaker 2: Let's see what we can do. And that's the way
41:33
Speaker 2: the whole thing, in my opinion, It's supposed to work.
41:36
Speaker 2: The Dave Allen Show on 580 Live is brought to
41:38
Speaker 2: you in part by Pinnacle Consultants, helping to identify environmental
41:41
Speaker 2: concerns like asbestos, lead, mold, and indoor quality issues. Buildings
41:45
Speaker 2: all across the state providing inspections, testing, and accredited lab
41:48
Speaker 2: services you can trust. Check out PinnacleCorp.net, helping you understand
41:51
Speaker 2: your environment because what you don't know can't hurt you.
41:54
Speaker 2: I do want to mention this about my boys in
41:57
Speaker 2: the Amos Steel Band. You hear me talking about the
41:59
Speaker 2: Amos Steel Band all the time. They provide some of
42:02
Speaker 2: our bumper music that For those outside the business, that
42:05
Speaker 2: basically means the music we come back from break from.
42:07
Speaker 2: They provide some of it here. And I told you
42:09
Speaker 2: yesterday they had a big show coming up. And for
42:10
Speaker 2: the life of me, because it's somewhere in this adult
42:13
Speaker 2: brain of mine or somewhere on my phone with 85,000
42:16
Speaker 2: pictures on it, I couldn't come up with it right away.
42:19
Speaker 2: They are going to be playing at TK's Pizza and
42:21
Speaker 2: Sports Bar in Elk View. It's coming Friday night at
42:24
Speaker 2: 8 o'clock. So go see my boys. If you've never
42:27
Speaker 2: seen them in concert, you will not be sorry. This
42:29
Speaker 2: is the guy's. If you know, every Christmas, right around
42:32
Speaker 2: Christmas Eve, I do a special show here called the
42:35
Speaker 2: Jewish Christmas Spectacular, where I bring Mike Pushkin in. Amos
42:38
Speaker 2: Steel Band is the guys that come in the studio
42:40
Speaker 2: here with us. But they're so much more than just that.
42:42
Speaker 2: You like blues, you like harder rock, you like a
42:44
Speaker 2: little southern rock soul thrown in there. They fit the bill.
42:49
Speaker 2: And big, big fans of these guys, great friends with
42:51

Speaker 3: The savings are on all summer long at Walker Chevrolet
43:21
Speaker 3: in Nitro. Listen, if you're planning on dragging that old
43:24
Speaker 3: worn out ride up and down the turnpike one more time,
43:28
Speaker 3: just don't. This is the time to upgrade and make
43:31
Speaker 3: that next trip in comfort and style. This summer, Gene
43:34
Speaker 3: and Ryan have loaded down the lot with inventory, both
43:37
Speaker 3: new and used, and that means they're sure to have
43:39
Speaker 3: the perfect vehicle for you no matter what your summer

Speaker 3: adventures have in store. And you know you're going to
43:44
Speaker 3: get the best deal possible at Walker because Gene and

Speaker 3: Ryan built their business the old-fashioned way by making friends.
43:50
Speaker 3: There are no gimmicks or games at Walker, just honest,
43:53
Speaker 3: fair deals. So don't push that old vehicle beyond its
43:56
Speaker 3: limits for another summer or worse. You have to call
43:58
Speaker 3: that brother-in-law you hate to come pick up your family
44:01
Speaker 3: in Beckley because that car couldn't make it back from
44:03

46:07
Speaker 2: Text says, Google has the money to placate Putnam County
46:11
Speaker 2: residents until they no longer need to placate Putnam County residents.
46:15
Speaker 2: Then it's tough blank for Putnam County residents after that. Well,
46:18
Speaker 2: I mean, I've only lived in Putnam County since 2014.
46:24
Speaker 2: But when we had the anniversary last week of the
46:27
Speaker 2: Toyota facility in Putnam County, I can tell you that
46:30
Speaker 2: I followed in the news closely when, again, years ago,
46:35
Speaker 2: when it was first being proposed that we're going to
46:36
Speaker 2: bring this Toyota facility to Putnam County. I did not
46:40
Speaker 2: move there personally, my wife and I, until 2014. But
46:44
Speaker 2: I can tell you that you could not ask for
46:47
Speaker 2: a better partner in Putnam County than what Toyota has been. Now,
46:51
Speaker 2: I'm not saying that Google is going to be that.
46:53
Speaker 2: I'm not saying that any other company is or isn't
46:54
Speaker 2: going to be that. I don't know. But I will
46:56
Speaker 2: tell you, that there were a lot of people and
46:59
Speaker 2: again i wasn't living there i was just following the
47:01
Speaker 2: news coverage that when when toyota came to putnam county
47:04
Speaker 2: there were a lot of people that were very very
47:05
Speaker 2: skeptical about it and i can tell you as somebody
47:08
Speaker 2: who lives there somebody who's been there you know since
47:11
Speaker 2: 2014 they're the real deal as far as giving back
47:15
Speaker 2: to the community being involved in everything in the community
47:17
Speaker 2: so hopefully google time will tell but hopefully google will
47:22
Speaker 2: follow that model Text, just wanted to remind people your
47:26
Speaker 2: Medicare is going up this month. Thank you, Capito, says
47:30
Speaker 2: a texter. West Virginia Watch is out with a story
47:33
Speaker 2: today that the West Virginia drug czar has resigned. TalkLineBoy
47:36
Speaker 2: is going to get into this, I think, a little
47:37
Speaker 2: bit further. But Dr. Stephen Lloyd has resigned. And the
47:41
Speaker 2: story to me is just kind of downright weird. Reported
47:46
Speaker 2: by Amelia Nicely or Lori Kersey of West Virginia Watch.
47:48
Speaker 2: Not weird from their reporting. Just the whole circumstances around it.
47:51
Speaker 11: Dr.
47:51
Speaker 12: Lloyd resigned.
47:52
Speaker 2: Was appointed by then-Governor Justice to that role in August
47:56
Speaker 2: of 2024. He was the eighth person in that spot,
47:59
Speaker 2: the eighth person since 2017. And before anybody thinks I'm
48:02
Speaker 2: piling on Patrick Morrissey, he wasn't in office as far
48:07
Speaker 2: as the governor goes, 2017.
48:09
Speaker 1: Dr.
48:09
Speaker 2: Lloyd says he's heartbroken. That was his quote, heartbroken about leaving.
48:14
Speaker 2: I mean, if he resigned, why would he be heartbroken?
48:19
Speaker 2: He also said he did not speak with the governor
48:24
Speaker 2: other than just a simple text message while he was
48:28
Speaker 2: in that role. Now, I don't know whether that's the
48:30
Speaker 2: truth or not. I'm just saying that's what Dr. Lloyd said.
48:33
Speaker 2: He did not have any conversations with the governor other
48:37
Speaker 2: than a simple text message or two. That to me
48:39
Speaker 2: in and of itself is somewhat troubling. I'm not pointing fingers.
48:42
Speaker 2: I'm just saying there seems to be some sort of
48:44
Speaker 2: communication issues going on based on what I have been
48:47
Speaker 2: told with this administration. I invite you to join me
48:50
Speaker 2: every Friday morning, 9.06, for the Adopt Me Please Pet
48:53
Speaker 2: of the Week from the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, brought to
48:55
Speaker 2: you by Almost 7 Interiors, family-owned, proudly serving the community
48:58
Speaker 2: for over 50 years. They specialize in custom blinds, shades, shutters, upholstery,
49:03
Speaker 2: and beautifully crafted sewn goods. Homes to hospitals, classrooms, commercial spaces,
49:06
Speaker 2: they do it all. 516 D Street in South Charleston, Texas.
49:10
Speaker 2: West Virginians want to be heard. They have very little voice,
49:14
Speaker 2: and there is very little regard from elected Republicans. What
49:18
Speaker 2: does it mean? say that the entire Republican legislature and
49:22
Speaker 2: governor passed legislation eliminating any control, oversight, or input from
49:26
Speaker 2: communities that have to deal with data centers? The county
49:29
Speaker 2: doesn't even get most of the associated tax money. Is
49:32
Speaker 2: this justified? T.J. Meadows coming up with that talk line.
49:36
Speaker 2: Is this justified?
49:38
Speaker 1: My man is what justified.
49:40
Speaker 2: He wasn't even paying attention.
49:40
Speaker 7: I was paying attention. Look, I know why they did it.
49:44
Speaker 7: You may not like it. They want a uniform system
49:46
Speaker 7: in West Virginia. We don't have a lot of counties
49:48
Speaker 7: that have zoning. Putnam County has some zoning. You know
49:54
Speaker 7: what your remedy is? What's that?
49:56
Speaker 2: Ballot box. Ballot box.
50:00
Speaker 7: No journey, no growth happens in a straight line. Success
50:04
Speaker 7: looks like a mess. Because you have all of these
50:08
Speaker 7: variables that come into play and you have to navigate
50:10
Speaker 7: the situation. Does the good outweigh the bad? I think
50:13
Speaker 7: it does. A few texts back, person talking about Putnam County,
50:17
Speaker 7: bet you my bottom dollar that person's not from Putnam County.
50:21
Speaker 2: As I said, as somebody who's, when did you move
50:23
Speaker 2: to Putnam County?
50:24
Speaker 7: I've been down there 15 years now, a little more
50:26
Speaker 7: than 15 years.
50:26
Speaker 1: Okay.
50:27
Speaker 2: I've been down there for.
50:29
Speaker 11: 12th.
50:30
Speaker 2: Math, Dave, math.
50:31
Speaker 7: We're hustlers down there, man. We like business down there. Seriously,
50:35
Speaker 7: the mentality is different.
50:36
Speaker 11: It is. It is.
50:37
Speaker 2: It is a different mentality down there.
50:39
Speaker 4: It really, really is.
50:40
Speaker 2: And other than people complaining about the traffic down there.
50:43
Speaker 2: And again, as I always say about the traffic, I mean,
50:45
Speaker 2: Number one, it's a great problem to have. I'll set
50:48
Speaker 2: in traffic. It means that you have a growing economy.
50:50
Speaker 2: It means you have people going in. I'll sit for
50:52
Speaker 2: 15 minutes on the Taze Valley exit, wishing I had
50:54
Speaker 2: gone to the bathroom before I left the station. But
50:56
Speaker 2: go ahead.
50:56
Speaker 1: That's congestion.
50:57
Speaker 2: That's not really traffic. That's not really traffic.
50:59
Speaker 7: Go to a major city. Go set the Fort Pitt
51:02
Speaker 7: Tunnel way to get through. That's traffic.
51:03
Speaker 5: Been there.
51:04
Speaker 2: Done that. Not as many times as you have, I'm sure,
51:06
Speaker 2: but I've been there. Philly is traffic. Yeah. Charlotte can
51:09
Speaker 2: be traffic.
51:10
Speaker 7: And you know what?
51:10
Speaker 2: Atlanta is traffic.
51:11
Speaker 7: Most of the people that complain about the traffic are people, oh,
51:13
Speaker 7: I would never move out there because of the traffic.
51:15
Speaker 7: It's not the people that live there. That's the thing
51:18
Speaker 7: about Putnam County. Let's just go.
51:19
Speaker 2: Let's go there.
51:20
Speaker 7: Why not?
51:21
Speaker 4: Here we go.
51:22
Speaker 7: Most of the complaints about Putnam County do not come
51:24
Speaker 7: from people that live in Putnam County.
51:27
Speaker 2: Am I right or wrong? I don't know. I do
51:29
Speaker 2: hear a lot of people. And again, I was at
51:31
Speaker 2: a chamber of commerce event a couple of weeks ago.
51:34
Speaker 2: And I was in the middle of a conversation, and
51:36
Speaker 2: somebody was complaining about all these people moving in and whatever.
51:39
Speaker 2: It was a nice conversation.
51:40
Speaker 11: Don't get me wrong.
51:40
Speaker 2: But I said, you know how many go down to
51:42
Speaker 2: McDowell County and complain about people moving in? And that's
51:46
Speaker 2: not a disrespect to the people of McDowell County. Just saying.
51:49
Speaker 2: Good problems to have.
51:50
Speaker 11: All right.
51:50
Speaker 2: What you got coming up on the show?
51:52
Speaker 7: We'll get into this drug czar story. Amelia Farrell nicely
51:54
Speaker 7: joins us from West Virginia Watch 1006. Brian Helton, Fayette
51:58
Speaker 7: County Senator. He wants to reinstate the death penalty. Excuse me. Tennessee. Tennessee.
52:03
Speaker 7: will execute someone today so we'll get into that with
52:06
Speaker 7: him that and much much.
52:07
Speaker 2: More all right again i will see you later today
52:10
Speaker 2: on metro news midday i will not be here thursday
52:13
Speaker 2: and friday you have been warned i'm on a beach
52:16
Speaker 2: somewhere briefly see you later today though till then have
52:19
Speaker 2: fun i love somebody.
52:32
Speaker 1: WCHSAM, W243DRFM Charleston, and W283AQ Crosslanes, a WVRC media station.
52:40
Speaker 1: We're proud to live here too.
