Latest / Founder Unfiltered - What Founders Think But Never Say / Your Founder Story Is The Best Sales Asset (You’re Just Not Telling It Yet)
Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to another episode of 6 Figure Secrets for Fractional
- 0:03Experts. My name is Bradley Jacobs, I'm
- 0:06your host, the founder and CEO of Mylance.
- 0:09We have some really exciting things going on at Mylance and
- 0:12really helping you use your LinkedIn as a tool, as a content
- 0:16engine for the sole and primary purpose of attracting customers
- 0:21and clients on LinkedIn. So come check us out.
- 0:23I'll leave it at that for now. Today's episode is about using
- 0:28your founder story as the biggest asset that you are not
- 0:32currently using. And we're going to go into why
- 0:36it's so effective and how it works and on down the line.
- 0:39So let's start with why it's so important.
- 0:43And it's so important because it has never been easier to start a
- 0:47business, to build software, to launch a new service than it is
- 0:50today, which means new business creations and new products and
- 0:55services are skyrocketing, especially with AI.
- 0:59And so it begs the question, what differentiates one product
- 1:04or service from another and how do you really stand out?
- 1:07And the answer is trust. That's why referrals are so
- 1:11effective because when you get sent to me from someone that you
- 1:15know, all of a sudden that trust is transferred and you're so
- 1:19much more likely to buy from me. And so with that many more tools
- 1:23and products and services out there, people are going to buy
- 1:27from the person or company that they trust.
- 1:30And if you're just a random business out there and saying
- 1:33like, hey, buy our product, but I've never heard of you don't
- 1:36know, you don't have any trust build up this sale is so much
- 1:42more difficult. So building that trust is
- 1:45basically everything and you need to have that as a
- 1:48differentiator. So we're going to talk about
- 1:52using LinkedIn to build that trust.
- 1:55And how you're going to use it is basically by showing up
- 1:59consistently in your network and your extended network in their
- 2:04feed, right? So they're going to start seeing
- 2:06your content on a regular basis. And keep in mind, if you posted
- 2:10every day, which you don't have to do, but even if you did, it's
- 2:13not like every person that you're connected to would see it
- 2:16every day, right? That's not how the LinkedIn
- 2:18algorithm works. So you can post it every day and
- 2:21maybe they'd see it like two or three times a week.
- 2:23So you never need to feel like you're being quote, UN quote too
- 2:26much. So know that your customer is on
- 2:29LinkedIn. LinkedIn has like a billion
- 2:31users and only 1% of active users are actually posting.
- 2:36So 99% of active users on LinkedIn, which is still
- 2:40probably like 100 million are just scrolling.
- 2:43They're scrolling and they're reading and they're looking and
- 2:45they're liking here and there and like that's it.
- 2:48So you're going to use LinkedIn to publish content.
- 2:51And then it's always, the question is, well, how do I
- 2:54actually do this? How do I actually use LinkedIn
- 2:57effectively? How do I not be cringy and self
- 3:00promote Y and all this like crap that's out there.
- 3:03And so the main way that you do it is through stories and
- 3:07personal anecdotes. You're sharing from your own
- 3:11personal experience, what happened, what you've learned,
- 3:15what's mistakes you've made, what experiences you've had on
- 3:20down the line, right wins, OK, all this stuff.
- 3:24And you're going to build trust because you are sharing from
- 3:29your own personal experience what's happened to you or what
- 3:34you've been through. And so by definition, you're a
- 3:36person, you're a person that someone is actually building a
- 3:39relationship with, even though you're kind of building this one
- 3:42to many relationship through content, But that's what's
- 3:45happening. Like there's I can't tell you
- 3:47the number of people that have jumped on a call with me for my
- 3:49lands and told me that they've been following my journey for X
- 3:52number of weeks, months, years, and they feel like they know me.
- 3:56It's like, holy shit. I mean, you can't buy that level
- 3:59of familiarity, relationship and trust.
- 4:01You can't, right? You either get it through
- 4:03referral or you build it over time.
- 4:05That's it. So I've been building these
- 4:07relationships over time and this person now trusts me.
- 4:11And then just a quick example, could be something on the lines
- 4:14of, hey, when I first started my Lance, I had no idea what the
- 4:17hell I was doing with XY and Z. And I learned the skill and now
- 4:21I use it in the following way, right?
- 4:23Or when I was at Uber and we launched Raleigh and we had this
- 4:26market share gain over Lyft. These are the three tactics,
- 4:29tactics we use that were the most effective, right?
- 4:32You're getting to know me through my stories.
- 4:35You're getting to know that I'm a real person, that I'm
- 4:37thoughtful, that I care. This is my vision.
- 4:40This is my why. These are my methodologies.
- 4:43Here's mistakes I've made, right?
- 4:44You're just getting to know me just as if we were having a
- 4:47conversation over coffee. So you're going to be building
- 4:53trust through those stories, through the personal anecdotes
- 4:58and the stories that you want to tell are the genuine ones mostly
- 5:03about the problem that you solve.
- 5:05So there's like a, a few different buckets you can use,
- 5:08but the most important stories you tell are about the problems
- 5:11you solve. So when I talk about finding
- 5:14clients in my consulting business, finding clients for
- 5:17Mylans using like I'm doing this right now, right?
- 5:19I'm talking about the problem I solve that our software solves
- 5:24on LinkedIn by telling you my own personal experiences using
- 5:28it. I've been posting on LinkedIn
- 5:29every day for six years. I have 24,000 some odd followers
- 5:34or connections or whatever, and it's been built up through
- 5:38consistency over years. So I'm telling you literally my
- 5:42own stories of what's worked for me so that you can get to know
- 5:46me. You can build trust and
- 5:48familiarity with me. And then you can come check out
- 5:50our products or our community or get some value from our
- 5:53newsletter, whatever it is, and get you into our ecosystem and
- 5:57eventually bring you on as a customer.
- 5:58That's really like, I'm big, I'm not hiding here, right?
- 6:01This is how we do it. And you can do the same thing,
- 6:04right? That's what we hope you do.
- 6:06So let's talk about a common pitfall because there is a lot
- 6:11of crap on LinkedIn and we get to not contribute to that.
- 6:16The what not to do is the common pitfall of the preachy post.
- 6:22So notice I said personal anecdotes and stories.
- 6:25That is not what, hey, you should go to LinkedIn and you
- 6:30should do all these things. No, I'm telling you what I do,
- 6:34what I have learned. I post on LinkedIn every day.
- 6:37I add 100 new connections a week.
- 6:39I introduce myself to those connections.
- 6:41These are things that I do that I've learned that work for me or
- 6:44I can share a mistake that I have made, a win that I have the
- 6:49preachy posts of you should build a marketing analytics
- 6:54dashboard and like, it's just boring.
- 6:57Nobody likes being taught to. No one likes being talked at.
- 7:01And that's what the preachy posts are like.
- 7:05So the more vulnerability that you're willing to share, the
- 7:09more likely you are to really connect with your audience, like
- 7:14truly share what it's like to struggle in running your company
- 7:19or a mistake you made and that you were really embarrassed and
- 7:23you got, you know, whatever criticized by your boss.
- 7:25I don't know. But the more that you're willing
- 7:27to share, it's again, picture that that conversation over
- 7:30coffee where the connection is built based on vulnerability,
- 7:35which essentially creates trust and intimacy.
- 7:38You're allowing somebody into your world.
- 7:41There's like when you try, and we've all done this right, when
- 7:44you try to project that perfect image, it's impossible to
- 7:49connect with. It's not relatable, but
- 7:53everyone's made mistakes, everyone's been rejected,
- 7:56everyone's been told no. And those are hard things to
- 7:59swallow. And when you're willing to share
- 8:01vulnerably what your experience is truly like, you're building
- 8:05connection. And that's what creates trust.
- 8:08And going back to the first point, the entire point of this
- 8:11is building trust with your ideal customer.
- 8:15So they then come into your ecosystem, you can nurture them,
- 8:18and they can buy from you. So what we're going to do here
- 8:22is we're going to share on LinkedIn.
- 8:24We're going to share authentically.
- 8:25We're going to share vulnerably. And in order to do that, we have
- 8:30to get over a few things. We have to get over some fears
- 8:33because there's a lot of common fears that come with posting on
- 8:37LinkedIn. It's that fear of judgement is a
- 8:40common one that I hear. Fear that I will look bad, that
- 8:44people will make fun of me for publishing content.
- 8:46People won't like my content. People will think that it's
- 8:50cringy or I'm self promoting. There's also a fear that I'm
- 8:55contributing to the noise of LinkedIn because so many people
- 8:58post on LinkedIn. It's like how do I stand out?
- 9:01Which is one of my favorite ones because it's such an easy
- 9:05answer. How do you stand out is you
- 9:08publish your own stories because no one has your stories, only
- 9:13you do. No one has the exact combination
- 9:17of experiences and expertise that you have.
- 9:21So if you stick to the eye point of view and you tell genuine,
- 9:24authentic, real stories from your professional life, whether
- 9:29you're AW 2 or a freelancer, fractional doesn't matter,
- 9:33right? It's like this is the value that
- 9:34I added. This is what I learned.
- 9:36This is what happened. You are by definition standing
- 9:40out. You are by definition not
- 9:42contributing to the noise because it's real, it's
- 9:44authentic and it's totally unique.
- 9:47It cannot be posted by somebody else, right?
- 9:49Unless they literally copy and paste and steal your shit.
- 9:52So the fear of being judged, the fear of rejection, the fear of,
- 10:00you know, like an the off comments that those are real
- 10:04fears. Like I get it.
- 10:06And we get to know that like that's just going to happen.
- 10:09And one of my favorite quotes is that man in the arena quote.
- 10:13It's like the I won't read it to you, right?
- 10:15But the whole concept is only the people that are in the arena
- 10:19truly get what it's like. And it's really easy to sit on
- 10:23the sidelines and judge everybody else.
- 10:25That's what the majority of people do.
- 10:27They're like, ha, ha, look at you, right?
- 10:29It's like all the fans are like watching an NFL game.
- 10:32They're like, how could you miss that throw?
- 10:34It's like, yeah, aren't you comfortable in the bleachers?
- 10:36You don't have like a £300 lineman running after you.
- 10:39And so like, yeah, you missed a throw, 'cause you're human and
- 10:41you're imperfect. That's the same thing on
- 10:43LinkedIn. You got these people, the 99%
- 10:46that are sitting on the sidelines critiquing everybody
- 10:48else. And you know what?
- 10:49You can say like get in the arena and then let's talk
- 10:52honestly. And also like your opinion just
- 10:55really doesn't matter to me that much.
- 10:57Like I always ask my customers, say if three people or five
- 11:00people or 10 people say your content sucks, but you get 1000
- 11:04people that love it, can you handle that?
- 11:07Can your ego handle those 351015 whatever people that say, hey, I
- 11:11don't like this. Hey, I don't think your
- 11:13writing's good. Hey, I think your point of view
- 11:14sucks. Great.
- 11:15Yeah, thanks for your opinion. Right.
- 11:18I, I, I would guess you can handle that.
- 11:20And if you can't handle that, I'm going to say you probably
- 11:23shouldn't be a business owner because the bigger you get, my
- 11:26guess is every business owner has ambitions to grow their
- 11:29business. The bigger you get, the more
- 11:32people you're going to have that are kind of coming at you,
- 11:34right? Think about Joe Rogan, one of my
- 11:36favorite examples because he's one of the most polarizing
- 11:39podcaster in the world. He's also the most popular,
- 11:42which just means that like, the bigger you get.
- 11:43Yeah, you're going to have people on both sides that love
- 11:45you and that hate you. You think that you let that gets
- 11:48him. He can't, right?
- 11:51He's not perfect. I'm guessing it does to some
- 11:52degree, but he finds a way to let it go and show up anyway and
- 11:55know that he's adding value to the world and he's adding value
- 11:58to millions. And for every one person that
- 12:00hates him, there's X people that love him.
- 12:03And he's OK with that. And that's where you, you have
- 12:05to get to. So anyway, I'm just going to
- 12:08recap this whole episode. We're going to make it short and
- 12:10sweet. Is that your founder story is a
- 12:13superpower when it's used well, when you're sharing your
- 12:16authentic story, when you are sharing vulnerably, genuinely
- 12:21what you've experienced in your life and showing up on LinkedIn
- 12:25on on a consistent basis. Avoid the common pitfall of
- 12:30preachy post share genuine stories.
- 12:32You have no possibility of contributing to the quote UN
- 12:35quote noise on LinkedIn because it's your genuine story.
- 12:38And you get to just get over the fear of judgement or rejection
- 12:41because the end of the day, you're in the arena, you're
- 12:44doing your best and you're never going to be perfect.
- 12:46And that's OK with that. I'm going to sign off.
