- 0:07Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory FIUL Territory Networks Cubs podcast. I'm
- 0:11Speaker 1: Sahada Sharma with my partner Patrick Mooney. We are your
- 0:14Speaker 1: Cubs beat writers over at the Athletic and Patrick. That
- 0:18Speaker 1: weekend in Cincinnati did not go as Cubs have hoped.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Not a great time for their first four game losing streak. Look,
- 0:28Speaker 1: I think I said this either I said this to
- 0:30Speaker 1: some Cubs fans that I was talking to over the weekend,
- 0:34Speaker 1: or I'm pretty sure I said it on the podcast.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I just like this matchup. I don't like Cubs versus Reds.
- 0:40Speaker 1: For the Cubs, they don't match up well against this
- 0:43Speaker 1: pitching staff. Nobody does. This is a really good pitching staff.
- 0:47Speaker 2: And you know, I believe they were shut out twice.
- 0:52Speaker 1: You know, there were some games that the Cubs pitching
- 0:55Speaker 1: looked really good and then some other games where you
- 0:58Speaker 1: were like a little worried about what's going on with
- 1:00Speaker 1: the starters. But uh, I don't know if if fans
- 1:04Speaker 1: are in panic mode, I still felt like the Cub's
- 1:07Speaker 1: offense was coming around. I don't know if I can
- 1:10Speaker 1: make that argument anymore. Uh, But that was that was
- 1:14Speaker 1: not a good weekend. What was what was it like
- 1:17Speaker 1: there in Cincy and what you know, how's the how
- 1:20Speaker 1: was the clubhouse?
- 1:20Speaker 3: How?
- 1:21Speaker 2: How did the team react?
- 1:22Speaker 1: And and I'm assuming knowing this group, there are no
- 1:26Speaker 1: signs of panic.
- 1:28Speaker 4: No, no panic, but I think there's a recognition that
- 1:33Speaker 4: they have to play better. And Counsel didn't really like
- 1:40Speaker 4: the you know, it didn't really go along with the
- 1:41Speaker 4: whole letdown idea or the energy narrative. It was like, look,
- 1:46Speaker 4: we just got to pitch better. And then when they
- 1:50Speaker 4: did pitch better, it's like you gotta score runs with
- 1:54Speaker 4: you know, two one nothing losses. Uh, kind of framing
- 1:58Speaker 4: that four game sweep. And yeah, you're right, the Reds
- 2:03Speaker 4: are that classic team you don't want to face in
- 2:06Speaker 4: a short series. We've talked about Hunter Green throwing almost
- 2:11Speaker 4: one hundred and two miles an hour in the ninth
- 2:13Speaker 4: inning of an almost no hitter. You know, I think
- 2:19Speaker 4: that Ballpark two it's just kind of a it's just
- 2:24Speaker 4: kind of a hard one. I just feel like stuff
- 2:26Speaker 4: happens there in a lot of different ways. It's just
- 2:31Speaker 4: it certainly plays different than Wrigley Field does. So like
- 2:35Speaker 4: if your Cup's pitcher, you're probably gonna feel pretty good
- 2:39Speaker 4: pitching at the friendly confines in October. If you're pitching
- 2:45Speaker 4: at Great American Ballpark when the Reds are fighting for
- 2:48Speaker 4: their playoff lives, like, it's going to be a different experience.
- 2:53Speaker 5: And so.
- 2:56Speaker 4: It is amazing that their longest losing streak of the
- 3:00Speaker 4: season happened immediately after they clinched a playoff spot, and
- 3:05Speaker 4: Council was trying to reframe it as look, three and
- 3:11Speaker 4: four road trip isn't great, but it's not bad. They're
- 3:14Speaker 4: still in a very good position looking forward. I think
- 3:18Speaker 4: there's a little bit of grading against the curve as well,
- 3:20Speaker 4: like the Mets on the verge of an epic collapse.
- 3:26Speaker 4: You see what's going on in the American League between
- 3:29Speaker 4: the Astros and the Tigers. There are teams that have
- 3:34Speaker 4: to answer a lot of tough questions if they don't
- 3:36Speaker 4: turn things around. And within the National League, I don't
- 3:42Speaker 4: think you see any team that's like an overwhelming favorite.
- 3:46Speaker 4: I mean, that was supposed to be the Dodgers, and
- 3:48Speaker 4: maybe they'll kind of flip a switch in October, but
- 3:52Speaker 4: like the Padres, who the Cubs will likely face, are
- 3:56Speaker 4: still kind of grinding through it here. You know, the
- 4:01Speaker 4: Phillies aren't really good shape, but they don't have Zach Wheeler.
- 4:05Speaker 5: And you know, the.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Brewers aren't amazing overachieving rare season team, but haven't really
- 4:13Speaker 4: done that much in the playoffs. So I think there
- 4:17Speaker 4: are certain things you want to see this week, and
- 4:19Speaker 4: we'll get into that later in the show. But I
- 4:22Speaker 4: don't think it's time to be like overly alarmed, as
- 4:26Speaker 4: long as you understand, like, yeah, they just got to
- 4:29Speaker 4: play better.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah, that's kind of how I look at it. They're
- 4:33Speaker 1: in now. I believe it's a three game lead over
- 4:37Speaker 1: the Padres.
- 4:38Speaker 2: So you know, just just.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Win a couple of games this week, and I hope
- 4:43Speaker 1: the Padres don't go undefeated, and you have three home
- 4:46Speaker 1: games against the Padres next week. That's the bottom line.
- 4:51Speaker 1: And you know, you can talk about getting hot at
- 4:54Speaker 1: the right time, getting cold, being too cold right now,
- 4:58Speaker 1: go look at some of the numbers of the players
- 5:02Speaker 1: heading into the playoffs, uh, and then and then what
- 5:04Speaker 1: they do in the playoffs. It doesn't it's not really
- 5:07Speaker 1: that indicative. It can be a mental thing, perhaps, but
- 5:11Speaker 1: baseball is such a random sport sometimes that as long
- 5:15Speaker 1: as the guys are healthy, and that's something we'll talk
- 5:17Speaker 1: about uh a little bit. But as long as they're healthy, uh,
- 5:22Speaker 1: anything can happen.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I thought, uh.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Pete had a pretty good series, and then Sunday he
- 5:29Speaker 1: didn't look good. You know, It's like he had two
- 5:32Speaker 1: at bats he pinch hits and and doesn't look good
- 5:34Speaker 1: in those evats. It's just so like, so I don't know,
- 5:37Speaker 1: I don't know when someone's getting hot. I don't know
- 5:39Speaker 1: when they're going to be cold again. In one bad
- 5:41Speaker 1: game doesn't mean you're cold.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Uh.
- 5:43Speaker 1: So, you know he's he's obviously huge for this team.
- 5:48Speaker 2: You want Ian have to stay hot.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Almost a little weird that he didn't have a crazy
- 5:54Speaker 1: UH game series in Cincinnati. That's probably his first time
- 5:58Speaker 1: going to Cincinnati and not you know, feeling like an
- 6:01Speaker 1: MVP UH caliber player for the entire series. Uh, it
- 6:07Speaker 1: was it. You know, I thought the offense had two good,
- 6:10Speaker 1: two solid games in between there We're seeing a lot
- 6:13Speaker 1: of the same stuff as far as not coming up
- 6:16Speaker 1: with the big hit. That that's the type of stuff
- 6:18Speaker 1: that can just change so quickly. I want them to
- 6:21Speaker 1: put pressure on the opposition, get on base, put it,
- 6:25Speaker 1: you know, find some gaps. That's the one thing that
- 6:28Speaker 1: you know some of this stuff. It's like the Reds
- 6:31Speaker 1: won on Sunday because they hit back to back doubles.
- 6:33Speaker 2: That's all it was. You you hit, you.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Sequenced correctly, your your extra base hits. And the Cubs,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I'm not sure if they did they have an extra
- 6:42Speaker 1: base hit yesterday, maybe one or two.
- 6:45Speaker 2: They just didn't. They didn't do enough. No, they didn't.
- 6:48Speaker 1: They did not have an extra base hit yesterday. And
- 6:50Speaker 1: and they went ohero for seven with runners in scoring position.
- 6:53Speaker 1: And that's the that's the bottom line, that's the difference
- 6:55Speaker 1: in in a close game. And and those are the
- 6:58Speaker 1: types of things that you know, that's how close baseball is.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Like that can and keep you from moving on in
- 7:05Speaker 1: the playoffs. You just hope they get hot at the
- 7:07Speaker 1: right time. On the Reds, like, this is not a
- 7:10Speaker 1: team you want in the playoffs. I just don't like.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I think that's the bigger deal than losing four in
- 7:15Speaker 1: a row. It's you let the Reds in this race.
- 7:18Speaker 1: They're now effectively in the playoffs with the Mets in
- 7:22Speaker 1: free fall. If they get in, the Dodgers are going
- 7:28Speaker 1: to wait not yeah, it's the Dodgers, right that would
- 7:30Speaker 1: face that would likely face the Reds. That's going to
- 7:34Speaker 1: be a really tough three games for them. I you know,
- 7:38Speaker 1: I I would if I were picking, I would pick
- 7:42Speaker 1: the Reds. I just really like this pitching staff, and
- 7:45Speaker 1: they have enough on offense that you know, certain guys
- 7:49Speaker 1: get hot if Ellie has a good series. You know,
- 7:52Speaker 1: they have talent on offense. It's not like it's a
- 7:54Speaker 1: talentless offense, but they have plenty of talent on offense.
- 7:58Speaker 1: They have a Hall of Fame manager and they know
- 8:02Speaker 1: he and he managed that series really well. I thought
- 8:06Speaker 1: that was one thing that he did great. Like he
- 8:08Speaker 1: started basically on Saturday, was it. He started just treating
- 8:12Speaker 1: it like playoff games. And I appreciated that. I was
- 8:16Speaker 1: I was at my son's baseball tournament, so I wasn't
- 8:18Speaker 1: keeping track of every single thing going on, but I
- 8:21Speaker 1: was keeping up on my phone. I was like, oh, wow,
- 8:23Speaker 1: he pulled a pitcher that was doing pretty well, and
- 8:25Speaker 1: he's going, Wow, he's going to some really good relievers here.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Okay.
- 8:29Speaker 1: It was just really interesting to watch how he was
- 8:31Speaker 1: handling the pitching staff and it worked out and it
- 8:35Speaker 1: led to you know, a huge sweep. They're a team
- 8:38Speaker 1: that I would you know I would look at and say,
- 8:40Speaker 1: don't overlook them. That this was the Cubs didn't play
- 8:45Speaker 1: great baseball. They didn't play terrible baseball. The bigger thing
- 8:48Speaker 1: is watch out for the Reds. In my opinion, the
- 8:52Speaker 1: Cubs wouldn't face them if it got that far until
- 8:55Speaker 1: the NLCS. But there's certainly a team that I would say, like,
- 9:00Speaker 1: watch out for them in the playoffs if they if
- 9:02Speaker 1: they finished this off.
- 9:04Speaker 5: Yeah, but I do. I'm with you.
- 9:08Speaker 4: I still think we could be recorded again later in
- 9:10Speaker 4: the week and the Reds have you know.
- 9:14Speaker 5: Crashed and all of a sudden.
- 9:15Speaker 4: It's just the nature of this season and that kind
- 9:18Speaker 4: of muddled middle, but no doubt, and I think it's
- 9:22Speaker 4: a good point in terms of urgency that they were
- 9:26Speaker 4: playing with, and also just there was a point during
- 9:30Speaker 4: the season where you looked at the Cubs rotation of like,
- 9:33Speaker 4: oh wow, you know, Matthew Boyd is an All Star
- 9:36Speaker 4: and kind of on the like on the fringes of
- 9:39Speaker 4: like the Cy Young Award race, and you know, we
- 9:42Speaker 4: all have seen how good SHOWDA has been. Obviously Kate
- 9:45Speaker 4: Horton has taken his game to another level, but you know,
- 9:51Speaker 4: showeda in Cincinnati acknowledge that he's still sort of trying
- 9:56Speaker 4: to find that consistency with his delivery ever since his
- 10:00Speaker 4: injury earlier in the year. He knows he's been giving
- 10:03Speaker 4: up a lot of home runs. He's a flyball pitcher,
- 10:07Speaker 4: and he does a good job of minimizing the damage, but.
- 10:10Speaker 5: His stuff just isn't quite as crisp.
- 10:14Speaker 4: And I think everyone trusts Shoda in a huge moment
- 10:19Speaker 4: and believes he can navigate a good lineup in a
- 10:25Speaker 4: playoff game. He wanted this challenge, that's why he came here.
- 10:30Speaker 4: But he's been like a very good picture rather than
- 10:36Speaker 4: that just kind of ace he was last year, you know,
- 10:39Speaker 4: like winning one nothing games and you know, being in
- 10:44Speaker 4: the Cy Young conversation, he's been kind of more solid
- 10:49Speaker 4: than spectacular, which is right over the course of a
- 10:52Speaker 4: long season. And he's certainly lived up. He's past everything
- 10:58Speaker 4: that they could have hoped for, exceeding expectations with his performance.
- 11:03Speaker 4: But like that will be a moment where if he's
- 11:07Speaker 4: feeling a little off, how you have to figure it
- 11:09Speaker 4: out really quick.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not quite the twenty twenty four show to
- 11:16Speaker 1: that we saw, So I agree he a little bit
- 11:20Speaker 1: of a question Mark not a disaster, but certainly can
- 11:24Speaker 1: help you win game, multiple games in the playoffs.
- 11:27Speaker 2: We'll just see where he's at. He's someone I.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely, it's not as sharp as you'd like it
- 11:33Speaker 1: to be. But he has one more start to I
- 11:35Speaker 1: believe he'll yeah, he'll have one more start to kind
- 11:37Speaker 1: of get right, and we'll see. We'll see where they're
- 11:40Speaker 1: at with their rotation. All right, Let's take a quick

- 12:46Speaker 1: So, Patrick, we were gonna, at least I'm gonna avoid
- 12:50Speaker 1: getting into like the political quagmire of this topic, but
- 12:56Speaker 1: you know, we have to kind of talk about it.
- 12:59Speaker 1: It's come out that at Shaw missed Sunday's game to
- 13:04Speaker 1: attend Charlie Kirk's memorial. Yeah, I mean, this is a
- 13:09Speaker 1: hot button topic and I think we both have our thoughts,
- 13:13Speaker 1: personal thoughts. We'll keep that to ourselves, so you guys
- 13:16Speaker 1: don't have to listen to our political commentary. I know
- 13:19Speaker 1: most people want to just stick to baseball, but this
- 13:21Speaker 1: is the baseball aspect of it. He missed a game
- 13:24Speaker 1: to go to a friend's memorial service. What was What
- 13:31Speaker 1: did you hear when you were in Cincinnati.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll just kind of walk this through and explain
- 13:37Speaker 4: our understanding of the situation. It's a Sunday getaway day
- 13:43Speaker 4: in Cincinnati. Justin Turner is starting at third base, which
- 13:48Speaker 4: is unusual, but there was just a lot going on pregame.
- 13:53Speaker 4: I did not come up during our session with Craig
- 13:57Speaker 4: Council pregame, but then you kind to get into the game.
- 14:00Speaker 5: You don't see matchall in.
- 14:03Speaker 4: The clubhouse or the dugout or out there for the
- 14:05Speaker 4: national anthem. There were opportunities in the game where it
- 14:11Speaker 4: would have made sense to plug Matt in, such as
- 14:15Speaker 4: when Moys is by Asteros is on second base in
- 14:18Speaker 4: a one run game, and Matt Shaw's an excellent base
- 14:22Speaker 4: runner like that was kind of a natural spot. So
- 14:26Speaker 4: Craig Counsel was asked postgame and he said matt Shaw
- 14:29Speaker 4: was unavailable. He was attending the funeral of a friend.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Craig Counsel did not mention Charlie Kirk by a name,
- 14:40Speaker 4: but through our reporting we confirmed that was Matt Shaw's decision.
- 14:44Speaker 4: We don't know the extent of his relationship with Charlie Kirk.
- 14:49Speaker 4: I'd imagine we will learn more this week because Mattaw,
- 14:54Speaker 4: according to counsel, is expected to be back on Tuesday.
- 15:01Speaker 4: We saw on Charlie Kirk's x account that he had
- 15:05Speaker 4: visited Wrigley Field this summer and he was on the
- 15:08Speaker 4: field with Matt Shaw and Michael Bush. I'm assuming it
- 15:13Speaker 4: was postgame. The tag was Cubs win. Charlie Kirk is
- 15:17Speaker 4: from suburban Chicago, and so that is kind of where
- 15:24Speaker 4: what we know to this point. I know you were
- 15:26Speaker 4: in Atlanta earlier in September. That was the day that
- 15:32Speaker 4: Charlie Kirk was shot and killed at a speaking engagement
- 15:37Speaker 4: in Utah, and he was scratched from that game for
- 15:43Speaker 4: personal reasons, And at that point, could you explain kind
- 15:48Speaker 4: of what the club's position was and kind of Matt's
- 15:53Speaker 4: I guess decision to not really engage in that topic
- 15:57Speaker 4: that yeah, yeah, I mean they.
- 15:59Speaker 1: You know, there was plenty of speculation online. We we
- 16:02Speaker 1: kind of wondered the same as the speculation uh and
- 16:07Speaker 1: and to maybe quell that speculation or at least explain
- 16:11Speaker 1: what was going on. We we asked postgame. Megan Montemorro
- 16:15Speaker 1: asked pr post game if Matt wanted to talk and
- 16:19Speaker 1: kind of get ahead of this.
- 16:21Speaker 2: Uh. He chose not to. And and that's obviously like
- 16:23Speaker 2: he's he's allowed to do that.
- 16:26Speaker 1: And you know, like you said, we don't know the
- 16:28Speaker 1: extent of their relationship, but if they're close, that's obviously
- 16:32Speaker 1: a tough day for him. So I totally understand him
- 16:35Speaker 1: not wanting to speak to us. That's you know, I
- 16:41Speaker 1: think this is just a really it's a very hot
- 16:45Speaker 1: button topic for fans. So there are going to be
- 16:48Speaker 1: some that are upset about what happened Sunday, why he
- 16:52Speaker 1: sat potentially why he set out that game in Atlanta,
- 16:56Speaker 1: uh and, and some who understand it perfectly. I think,
- 17:00Speaker 1: you know, we don't know for sure, that's why he
- 17:04Speaker 1: was scratched for personal reasons. You know, I don't want
- 17:09Speaker 1: to as a you know, as per what our jobs are,
- 17:12Speaker 1: I'm not going to say that's what it was. Clearly,
- 17:17Speaker 1: we've got it confirmed that that's what happened on Sunday.
- 17:22Speaker 2: He was at the memorial. So it's a it is.
- 17:25Speaker 1: It's it's something that's coming to the spotlight and has
- 17:28Speaker 1: been speculated about and now confirmed.
- 17:30Speaker 2: As far as where he was Sunday, you know, it was.
- 17:36Speaker 1: It was definitely an odd scene in Atlanta because so
- 17:39Speaker 1: much speculation was happening when he was scratched, and at
- 17:43Speaker 1: first it was like, no way that that's that can't
- 17:46Speaker 1: be what it is. And now you know, with everything
- 17:49Speaker 1: that's come out, it seems pretty obvious what happened.
- 17:52Speaker 4: But look at this is it's unusual for a rookie
- 17:56Speaker 4: to kind of take an excuse absence at this time
- 18:01Speaker 4: of the year. This is going to be this is
- 18:06Speaker 4: a polarizing situation. I can just look at the comments
- 18:10Speaker 4: on the Athletic to a very basic news story that
- 18:13Speaker 4: might have been three hundred words. I can see on
- 18:17Speaker 4: x that this has provoked a lot of strong reactions
- 18:23Speaker 4: either way. I think for me personally, I'm going to
- 18:25Speaker 4: leave it there and I'll be curious to, you know,
- 18:29Speaker 4: hear what Matchaw has to say on Tuesday at Rigleyfield.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I would assume he's going to speak at some
- 18:37Speaker 1: point about this topic. It feels like he kind of
- 18:40Speaker 1: has you at this point, maybe he chooses not to.
- 18:42Speaker 1: I don't know, but we'll see.
- 18:44Speaker 2: I agree.
- 18:45Speaker 1: We can keep our personal opinions to ourselves and let
- 18:48Speaker 1: people argue about it in the comments if they choose
- 18:51Speaker 1: choose to. All right, let's take a break and come
- 18:54Speaker 1: back and talk about another Guess what it's going to
- 18:58Speaker 1: be Patrick, one more update. We'll see what's what's happening
- 19:01Speaker 1: with Kyle Tucker.
- 19:03Speaker 7: When you think fair Harbor, you should think soft, you
- 19:05Speaker 7: should think buttery liner. But it's not just the bathing suits,
- 19:09Speaker 7: are the shorts, it's also sweatshirts like the one that
- 19:12Speaker 7: I'm wearing right now, Kratz.
- 19:14Speaker 2: It is stupid soft.
- 19:16Speaker 3: It's ridiculous that a shirt that can one keep you warm,

- 20:05Speaker 1: The Kyle Tucker saga and his CAF has gone on
- 20:09Speaker 1: much longer than I think any of us expected. This is,
- 20:14Speaker 1: you know, the hardest calf to heal. Apparently, what what
- 20:19Speaker 1: did council have to say? He's out in Tampa or
- 20:22Speaker 1: he should be back. Maybe he's as we record right now,
- 20:25Speaker 1: he's traveling back perhaps to Chicago.
- 20:28Speaker 2: What's what's the latest on Kyle Tucker.
- 20:31Speaker 4: So the expectation kind of heading into the weekend was
- 20:35Speaker 4: the Cubs were not expecting some dramatic report or a
- 20:41Speaker 4: monumental update. Tucker was scheduled to do kind of a
- 20:48Speaker 4: full session whatever is on Sunday, and then also Monday morning,
- 20:55Speaker 4: get back at it and get whatever sort of kind
- 21:00Speaker 4: treatment that has been prescribed, and then leave for Chicago
- 21:07Speaker 4: Monday afternoon. That was kind of the itinerary and then
- 21:11Speaker 4: to be back at Wrigley Field on Tuesday, and so
- 21:15Speaker 4: at that point they could better.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Assess where he was at.
- 21:21Speaker 4: Councils essentially ruling him out for Tuesday's lineup, does not
- 21:26Speaker 4: think that's realistic. So that would put at most five
- 21:30Speaker 4: games before the end of the regular season. Tucker, according
- 21:39Speaker 4: to Council, has said I want to get at bats
- 21:41Speaker 4: in major league games and face real major league pitching.
- 21:47Speaker 4: I would assume that's going to happen, but Council still
- 21:50Speaker 4: had to say, like when, and we have to figure
- 21:52Speaker 4: out when and if he's going to be available. So
- 21:58Speaker 4: until his name is in the lineup, Uh, this is
- 22:00Speaker 4: going to be kind of a lingering question as they
- 22:05Speaker 4: head toward October.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know what, Frankly, even if his name
- 22:10Speaker 1: is in the lineup, it's gonna be one of those
- 22:11Speaker 1: things where it's like, let's hope he doesn't get scratched
- 22:14Speaker 1: after he works out in pregame or something like that. Yeah,
- 22:18Speaker 1: So it's it's become one of those weird situations. Just
- 22:25Speaker 1: to point some people that are going to say this
- 22:28Speaker 1: only happens to the Cubs, you know, I just go
- 22:31Speaker 1: look at the Will Smith situation in LA that that's
- 22:35Speaker 1: a you know, I think he has a fracture in
- 22:38Speaker 1: his hand or some something that he wasn't put on
- 22:41Speaker 1: the IL for almost ten days. They just thought he
- 22:45Speaker 1: was going to be fine, and then finally they found
- 22:48Speaker 1: a I can't I don't want to say exactly what
- 22:50Speaker 1: it was. I thought it was a practure, but I'm
- 22:52Speaker 1: going off my memory, and I don't cover that team
- 22:54Speaker 1: and read every single bit about them. But that's you know,
- 22:57Speaker 1: this happens to a lot of different teams across the game.
- 23:02Speaker 1: We just don't cover them and watch over them every
- 23:05Speaker 1: single day, so we don't notice it as much. But this,
- 23:09Speaker 1: I don't know if this was handled poorly as much
- 23:12Speaker 1: as just like a lot of unexpected turns. And for me,
- 23:16Speaker 1: this feels like it doesn't feel like it was handled poorly.
- 23:20Speaker 1: It just feels like, why isn't this responding? This sounded
- 23:23Speaker 1: like a three or four day thing, and then his
- 23:27Speaker 1: calf wasn't responding and getting better, And you know, it
- 23:30Speaker 1: went from well, we hope he's back by the weekend
- 23:34Speaker 1: to okay, we're gonna put him on the IL to
- 23:37Speaker 1: and hope it's a minimum stay too. Is this going
- 23:40Speaker 1: to be a month without playing baseball? That's you know
- 23:45Speaker 1: that it's one of those that escalated quickly situations, and
- 23:48Speaker 1: I you know, I don't I think a few games
- 23:54Speaker 1: of it bats is all you need to see, and
- 23:57Speaker 1: that whether the results are there or not, I wouldn't
- 23:59Speaker 1: freak out. I think you mentioned it in the last podcast,
- 24:03Speaker 1: and you definitely wrote it in your piece like look
- 24:06Speaker 1: what Kyle Schwarber did. I like you recalling the official
- 24:10Speaker 1: that said, you know, once again for me, that's bring
- 24:12Speaker 1: training is useless. Uh, it's I mean, it's it's purely
- 24:15Speaker 1: for the picture. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's purely for
- 24:19Speaker 1: the pictures. These guys can you know, Uh, these guys
- 24:24Speaker 1: can sometimes just get out of bed and start hitting,
- 24:26Speaker 1: especially the veterans.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Uh.
- 24:28Speaker 1: So you know, you hope that that's the case for
- 24:32Speaker 1: Kyle Tucker. Fans are surely hoping that's the case. The
- 24:34Speaker 1: Cubs certainly are. We'll see when he gets back. This
- 24:38Speaker 1: has just been a weird situation. Uh, And I'm not
- 24:41Speaker 1: going to say anything definitively. Counsel even hesitated when when
- 24:44Speaker 1: I asked, is this going to be a minimum stay?
- 24:47Speaker 1: He said, you know, I said, he's not going on
- 24:50Speaker 1: the I l So I'm not making any guarantees anymore.
- 24:53Speaker 1: So he's I think I think that's when when people
- 24:56Speaker 1: hear if and when they freak out because of it
- 24:59Speaker 1: if if he comes back, Look, he's just covering himself.
- 25:03Speaker 1: He's not saying I'm really concerned that he's not coming
- 25:06Speaker 1: back to because Council would tell us that. He would
- 25:09Speaker 1: straight up say like I'm not sure if he's coming back.
- 25:12Speaker 1: He would tell us like that's he's just he's pretty
- 25:15Speaker 1: frank about this stuff. I still think he's gonna get
- 25:19Speaker 1: in a couple of games. I just don't know when
- 25:21Speaker 1: it's gonna happen. And like, well, we'll see, we'll see
- 25:24Speaker 1: how it reacts, we'll see when he plays. And this
- 25:27Speaker 1: is just this has just gone on far longer than
- 25:30Speaker 1: I expected it to. But hey, uh, it's kind of
- 25:33Speaker 1: been that type of season. Not and I'm not talking
- 25:36Speaker 1: about the Cubs talking about in baseball, it has been
- 25:39Speaker 1: that type of year where just like that, like getting
- 25:42Speaker 1: back to what we started with. I have no clue
- 25:44Speaker 1: who has who's gonna win the World Series this year.
- 25:46Speaker 1: I don't know who the favorite is because I don't
- 25:48Speaker 1: think there is one. Uh, Like teams are banged up
- 25:51Speaker 1: teams like teams don't. There's no dominant team. It's a
- 25:56Speaker 1: it's just been a weird season and and we'll see,
- 25:59Speaker 1: uh who does what the come postseason. Obviously having Kyle
- 26:03Speaker 1: Tucker makes the Cubs a lot scarier.
- 26:06Speaker 4: Yeah, this is just common sense, not like based on
- 26:11Speaker 4: inside information. It's hard to imagine Kyle Tucker not coming
- 26:17Speaker 4: back for at least a cameo appearance here by the
- 26:22Speaker 4: final weekend at Wrigley and playing in the playoffs. Like
- 26:25Speaker 4: he just says, way too much at stake as a
- 26:30Speaker 4: free agent this offseason. He's invested way too much in
- 26:34Speaker 4: this team. He's like, way too good of a player
- 26:40Speaker 4: that I just have a hard time seeing him in
- 26:42Speaker 4: the Cubs not deciding that he's crossed a threshold. Again,
- 26:46Speaker 4: that's more of my just opinion. That's not a guaranteed
- 26:50Speaker 4: Locke And if anyone could do this, it might be
- 26:56Speaker 4: Kyle Tucker, who was a very low maintenance approach, Like
- 26:59Speaker 4: you said, a guy who could just kind of like
- 27:03Speaker 4: roll out of bed and start hitting. That's him, As
- 27:08Speaker 4: Council pointed out, he had a fantastic September last year
- 27:11Speaker 4: coming off of a fractured shin.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Yeah, much more significant injury.
- 27:16Speaker 4: And that you know, he went back to the same
- 27:19Speaker 4: place that he worked with last year and has worked
- 27:22Speaker 4: with in the past.
- 27:23Speaker 5: Maybe that peace of mind will help.
- 27:26Speaker 4: But yeah, man, until he's back out there, it's just
- 27:30Speaker 4: kind of a lot of interpretation and conjecture.
- 27:34Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll see if he when I agree with you,
- 27:38Speaker 1: like he's gonna cut it almost has to just for
- 27:40Speaker 1: himself for his own sake, just come out there and
- 27:43Speaker 1: test it, see what happens. You know, as long as
- 27:47Speaker 1: it's not like some dire situation, I think he'll be
- 27:50Speaker 1: out there. Uh, and you know what, he could very
- 27:53Speaker 1: well be a dominant force if he performs, he performs
- 27:57Speaker 1: like he did in September of last year, or believe me,
- 28:00Speaker 1: Cubs fans will be very happy. Like that was a
- 28:03Speaker 1: superstar performance. It was what we saw earlier this year,
- 28:07Speaker 1: and the Cubs I think could really use that right now.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Just a jolt of energy and confidence throughout that team
- 28:15Speaker 1: would help right now after a four game losing streak
- 28:19Speaker 1: where it just you know, I don't think any Cubs
- 28:21Speaker 1: fan was thrilled with that. All right, We'll be back
- 28:24Speaker 1: later this week with more, probably more Kyle Tucker news
- 28:27Speaker 1: because that's just kind of what we do every episode.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Thanks for listening everyone, This is Northside Territory. Make sure
