- 0:15Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome everybody to episode sixty three of Cards
- 0:19Speaker 1: and Categories. I'm Mike coolired from Rasball, joined us always
- 0:22Speaker 1: by my very good friend Jeremy Burr, also from Rasball.
- 0:26Speaker 2: How are you doing tonight, buddy, I am just dandy.
- 0:29Speaker 2: I'm all razzed up about the playoffs play on words
- 0:32Speaker 2: there on purpose, Yes, you got it. It has been
- 0:35Speaker 2: an exciting I've been waiting all week for that one.
- 0:38Speaker 2: It's been an exciting start of the playoffs there. I
- 0:40Speaker 2: don't know about you, but it has been a thrilling
- 0:44Speaker 2: storylin after storyline, and it looks like we're gonna have
- 0:47Speaker 2: some interesting teams trying to sneak through here and make
- 0:49Speaker 2: the fall class take a lot more interesting than a
- 0:52Speaker 2: heavyweight fight might indicate. So very excited to see. We'll
- 0:57Speaker 2: see what comes out next few days here.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Yeah. I've been really sucked into all of these games
- 1:02Speaker 1: recently because they've been ever since that Mets Braves doubleheader
- 1:06Speaker 1: that we had last week that really I thought maybe
- 1:09Speaker 1: that'd be like the high point of the playoffs in
- 1:11Speaker 1: the season, but it just keeps coming. These playoffs have
- 1:15Speaker 1: been tight. We've had lots of great performances, lots of
- 1:18Speaker 1: seminal moments. We're speaking on the evening of October ninth,
- 1:22Speaker 1: so literally, the New York Mets just clinched their spot
- 1:26Speaker 1: in the LCS like five minutes ago. So that was
- 1:30Speaker 1: a little bit of a roller coaster ride with Edwin
- 1:32Speaker 1: Diaz at the end. But we've walked into today when
- 1:36Speaker 1: we've had the four games going in the Division Series,
- 1:39Speaker 1: all four DS's were tied up at one point one.
- 1:43Speaker 1: It's just been a crazy back and forth battle. But
- 1:46Speaker 1: what has really stood out to you the most from
- 1:48Speaker 1: the playoffs or what is kind of like really sunk
- 1:51Speaker 1: into your memory over the past week since we've talked.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think it's you know, two teams
- 1:56Speaker 2: right now just seem hotter than hot is the San
- 1:58Speaker 2: Diego Padres and Roy Tigers. They just seem like and
- 2:03Speaker 2: it's not like the Potters have a good team. Don't
- 2:06Speaker 2: get me wrong, the Tigers have it. I'm gonna call
- 2:07Speaker 2: it a decent team. No offense to the Tigers, but
- 2:09Speaker 2: like they just seem to be hot at the right time.
- 2:12Speaker 2: And I mean, what they want a bullpen game and
- 2:15Speaker 2: it's just like, well we don't have enough starter, We'll
- 2:18Speaker 2: just throw the whole bullpen and we'll just shut you out.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Like it's it seems like they're they are just on
- 2:23Speaker 2: a roll. Nobody can get in their way. And so
- 2:26Speaker 2: those two teams just seem like they're gonna they have
- 2:29Speaker 2: the vibe going, they think. I think a few a
- 2:32Speaker 2: year ago or two years ago, the Phillies just had
- 2:33Speaker 2: that vibe thing going. It didn't work all the way
- 2:36Speaker 2: through necessarily, but they had the vibe just fully going.
- 2:39Speaker 2: And that's you know, that's kind of what I feel
- 2:41Speaker 2: with the Padres and the Tigers right now. So I
- 2:44Speaker 2: don't know if anybody could have predicted you know, Patter's
- 2:46Speaker 2: Tigers World Series, and I'm not fully predicting one yet,
- 2:48Speaker 2: but like it seems like that's a real possibility, and man,
- 2:53Speaker 2: I actually think i'd be fun to watch. So I
- 2:55Speaker 2: don't know, that's kind of what stands out to me. Besides,
- 2:58Speaker 2: you can talk about my name, Machado and a few
- 2:59Speaker 2: other things. Right A true school has just been outstanding.
- 3:03Speaker 2: But what about you? What sticks out to you with
- 3:07Speaker 2: these playoffs?
- 3:08Speaker 1: Well, yeah, you're calling for a forty year anniversary of
- 3:10Speaker 1: the nineteen eighty four World Series there between the Tigers
- 3:14Speaker 1: and the Padres. I mean, certainly, the Tigers have been
- 3:16Speaker 1: a really fun team to watch as they just kind
- 3:19Speaker 1: of keep skating through and have been super hot. I mean,
- 3:21Speaker 1: I've been really intrigued watching the Mets. They've also been
- 3:25Speaker 1: super hot. I think they've had the best record in
- 3:28Speaker 1: baseball since June first, and so they've just been on
- 3:31Speaker 1: a roll. They've got that like Grimace energy and the
- 3:33Speaker 1: OMG energy and all of the celebrities they were, you know,
- 3:38Speaker 1: Jerry Seinfeld was there, Hank Azaria was there. They've got
- 3:41Speaker 1: everybody out in the Queen's there. You could show that
- 3:47Speaker 1: I'm not hanging out in New York too often calling
- 3:50Speaker 1: it the Queens. They look fantastic, and tonight was a
- 3:58Speaker 1: really big test for them, especially when Edwin Diaz came out,
- 4:02Speaker 1: you know, following that huge Francisco Lindor Grand Slam. That's
- 4:05Speaker 1: been great to see. As you know, we've talked about
- 4:07Speaker 1: over the summer how Lindor is really putting in the
- 4:10Speaker 1: final pieces to a Hall of Fame resume and if
- 4:14Speaker 1: he can, especially you know, carry the Mets to the
- 4:17Speaker 1: World Series. I mean, not necessarily win the World Series,
- 4:20Speaker 1: but I think reach a World Series, especially given his
- 4:23Speaker 1: Balky back down the stretch, that would be quite the
- 4:26Speaker 1: story and feather in his cap. But tonight was just
- 4:31Speaker 1: great to see the Mets kind of overcome the nerves
- 4:34Speaker 1: of Like, honestly, I was even getting nervous watching Edwin
- 4:37Speaker 1: Diaz out there after he had walked the first two
- 4:39Speaker 1: batters of the ninth inning. It looked like the Mets
- 4:42Speaker 1: were back to their old selves and on their way
- 4:45Speaker 1: to blowing it against this Phillies team. And then from
- 4:47Speaker 1: there you just knew that the rails were going to
- 4:49Speaker 1: fall off and the Phillies would win Game five. But
- 4:52Speaker 1: they hung in and they look really solid. The pitching's
- 4:56Speaker 1: been going really well. I think the other thing that's
- 4:58Speaker 1: really stood up for me is just for and tattist
- 5:00Speaker 1: Junior has kind of reached a different echelon of bat
- 5:04Speaker 1: I think in the playoffs that when he opened that
- 5:08Speaker 1: series against the Dodgers here with that just giant homer
- 5:13Speaker 1: at home, like it just really has changed everything. And
- 5:18Speaker 1: just watching the Padres, you know, in the face of
- 5:22Speaker 1: the denigration from Ken Rosenthal out there and just it
- 5:26Speaker 1: does seem like they are a team of destiny as well. So,
- 5:30Speaker 1: I mean, I think because of that Padres Mets NLCS
- 5:35Speaker 1: would just be fantastic television, fantastic fireworks. And on the
- 5:40Speaker 1: other side, like the Yankees are, I think the intriguing story,
- 5:44Speaker 1: like it's good to still kind of keep them around
- 5:46Speaker 1: from having just the whole behemoth kind of dark empire
- 5:52Speaker 1: part of it all that it's fun to hate on
- 5:53Speaker 1: the Yankees and have that foil.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it is. It's nice to have a common
- 5:59Speaker 2: enemy at times. Sorry Yankee fans, but that's there. It's
- 6:03Speaker 2: gonna take a long time from the shed that that weight.
- 6:06Speaker 2: But uh yeah, I think you know, you hit on
- 6:09Speaker 2: something for true here is like the Padres Dodgers series.
- 6:13Speaker 2: You know, I look at just even the team the
- 6:16Speaker 2: Dodgers are fielding tonight. Freeman's on the lineup. They got Brazier,
- 6:20Speaker 2: uh you know, taking taking the opener role. Uh, Bueler
- 6:24Speaker 2: has been really struggling. It's like they they be they
- 6:27Speaker 2: got thinned real fast, and I don't think people realize
- 6:29Speaker 2: how then they were getting and that's really really hurt them.
- 6:34Speaker 2: And so they're not too intimidating right now. And when
- 6:37Speaker 2: you're facing such a hot team, and to your point,
- 6:40Speaker 2: Tatis's is doing something probably making a number of folks
- 6:43Speaker 2: that invest in his cards when his market dropped, very
- 6:45Speaker 2: very happy uh at this time as well. So these
- 6:49Speaker 2: playoffs are are are crazy. I'm going to put you
- 6:52Speaker 2: to the test here. What's you call? Who you?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Who you?
- 6:54Speaker 2: Who are you taking at this point for the World Series.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I'm I'm only making take the winner.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Honestly, I think at this point in time, the Yankees
- 7:06Speaker 1: probably pull it off. I think just it's really tough
- 7:10Speaker 1: getting through that lineup with Judge and Soto kind of
- 7:12Speaker 1: hanging around, and I think it's really started to show
- 7:16Speaker 1: more against this this Royals team. And I mean part
- 7:20Speaker 1: of it is just the playoff atmosphere that you're putting
- 7:22Speaker 1: all that pressure on the opposing pitture, it does look
- 7:27Speaker 1: they're tough to get out, even though Judge has been cold,
- 7:29Speaker 1: like the pictures have made great pitches against him. And
- 7:34Speaker 1: part of it too, is like Judge has kind of
- 7:37Speaker 1: been pressing a little bit, but Lon Soto is just
- 7:40Speaker 1: otherworldly and they've got a solid bullpen, They've probably got
- 7:46Speaker 1: the Padres probably have the most starting pitching depth at
- 7:48Speaker 1: this point, but the Yankees have that as well. So
- 7:51Speaker 1: I'm I'm gonna go with the Yankees right now? What
- 7:53Speaker 1: about you?
- 7:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know if this is a brazen or not,
- 7:58Speaker 2: but I think I'm I want to take the Tigers.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I do.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I just can't go that far. I'm going I'm on
- 8:03Speaker 2: the Podres train right now.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Yeah hard like everybody. Yeah, it would be fantastic watching
- 8:08Speaker 1: this Tigers team win, but.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yeah it would, But right now, I have to I
- 8:12Speaker 2: have to leans the Padres. I just I think they
- 8:14Speaker 2: have a mo ojo that you really can't, you know,
- 8:17Speaker 2: argue with. And it's not just the mojo. They have
- 8:20Speaker 2: the talent too, right. They have the talent across the board.
- 8:23Speaker 2: They have a deep lineup, they have a deep bullpen,
- 8:25Speaker 2: they have a really good rotation, and it feels like
- 8:27Speaker 2: all those things going together at the same time is
- 8:29Speaker 2: what's happening right now. And I think that's gonna be
- 8:32Speaker 2: really hard to beat as the series gets longer. I
- 8:34Speaker 2: think that's the thing for the Padres, as the series
- 8:36Speaker 2: could become the seven game series. I think they're scarier
- 8:39Speaker 2: than a lot of the other teams. So I've got
- 8:41Speaker 2: the Podres. I'm I'm gonna take the Padres and six
- 8:44Speaker 2: over the Tigers. Bus bonus points there for that one.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Yeah, so you are going with the eighty four series rematch.
- 8:52Speaker 1: I think that Yankees Padres is probably gonna end up
- 8:55Speaker 1: being the World Series like at this point, and then
- 8:58Speaker 1: I mean, that's a ninety eight World Series, man, So
- 9:00Speaker 1: they'll only two times the Padres have made it event
- 9:03Speaker 1: against the Tigers and the Yankee So it's kind of
- 9:06Speaker 1: funny that it's all working out that way. But okay,
- 9:09Speaker 1: let's dive into some of our normal news and notes
- 9:12Speaker 1: before we get into the second half of our show,
- 9:15Speaker 1: which is we're going to go back on the preseason
- 9:18Speaker 1: staff picks that we had up on ras Ball and
- 9:21Speaker 1: kind of re evaluate what we had in terms of
- 9:24Speaker 1: we made the MVP and cy Young and Rookie of
- 9:27Speaker 1: the Year picks, which are heart is all get out,
- 9:30Speaker 1: so you'll especially see as you know, I will link
- 9:34Speaker 1: to that, and we get into the discussion that injuries
- 9:37Speaker 1: certainly play a big role there. But in terms of
- 9:40Speaker 1: our picks, we also made fantasy ones in terms of
- 9:44Speaker 1: you know, breakout hitters, breakout pitchers, bounce backs, and then
- 9:48Speaker 1: kind of like fantasy MVPs, where considering the cost that
- 9:52Speaker 1: you might have paid for them, how good could this be?
- 9:55Speaker 1: As a piece for your team. So we will review that,
- 9:58Speaker 1: but before we do that, we're to get into some
- 10:00Speaker 1: news and notes that have happened over the past week
- 10:02Speaker 1: that haven't been the playoffs. And if you're looking for
- 10:06Speaker 1: any of the information we're about to discuss, you can
- 10:08Speaker 1: find the news and notes, links and everything else we're
- 10:12Speaker 1: going to talk about in the show notes or at
- 10:14Speaker 1: rasball dot com. So we're going to get into we
- 10:17Speaker 1: have one piece of injury news that our boy, Brent Rooker,
- 10:21Speaker 1: mostly your boy like you love that boys. I was
- 10:25Speaker 1: looking it up because on our historical player rader on
- 10:27Speaker 1: rasball dot Com, the twenty twenty four hasn't quite moved
- 10:30Speaker 1: into there, but Brent Rooker's twenty four season is going
- 10:34Speaker 1: to be in like the top. I think it was
- 10:37Speaker 1: like three hundredsish of all time this season, which is
- 10:42Speaker 1: it doesn't sound impressive, but considering how many years of
- 10:45Speaker 1: baseball there have been it goes back to nineteen oh three,
- 10:48Speaker 1: it's pretty dang impressive. Considering where you probably took Brent Rooker.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Nobody took him as their fantasy hitter MVP. Somebody probably
- 10:56Speaker 1: should have, but he did undergo surgery to repair an
- 11:00Speaker 1: extensor in his right arm. So with that, I was
- 11:03Speaker 1: looking this up what it actually is. It's like the
- 11:05Speaker 1: ligaments that help move your fingers. So he had a
- 11:11Speaker 1: partial tear in one of those, and that means he
- 11:14Speaker 1: had actually been playing with it, I think since like May,
- 11:16Speaker 1: so it wasn't affecting him too much. And if anything,
- 11:20Speaker 1: that Brent Rooker that we saw since May was still
- 11:23Speaker 1: an outstanding player and he's going to be full of
- 11:26Speaker 1: repaired going into next season, doesn't appear that this surgery
- 11:29Speaker 1: is going to have any ill effects on his preseason
- 11:33Speaker 1: start and getting into spring training. So does this even
- 11:37Speaker 1: like kick Brent Rooker up a few notches? Maybe for
- 11:40Speaker 1: you in your mind, because maybe we didn't see the
- 11:42Speaker 1: best Brent Worker could be.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I think for anything it does for me maybe
- 11:47Speaker 2: averages out the potential like regression you just feel might
- 11:51Speaker 2: be there from a career season and so like, yeah,
- 11:55Speaker 2: maybe he's gonna step back May he can't do that again.
- 11:57Speaker 2: But yet he was hurt the whole time, so maybe
- 11:59Speaker 2: he can't. Like I think it kind of averages all
- 12:01Speaker 2: out for me in the wash. So I'm not I'm
- 12:03Speaker 2: not looking at it one way or the other. But
- 12:04Speaker 2: I am looking at his man. That was an incredibly
- 12:06Speaker 2: impressive season, like and and to your point, having such
- 12:10Speaker 2: a good season on the Player Raider for basically free,
- 12:13Speaker 2: like that's that is hard to do.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Uh.
- 12:16Speaker 2: No shameless plug here, but I think my last post
- 12:19Speaker 2: of the of the season was called finding Brent Rooker,
- 12:23Speaker 2: looking for the next Brent Rooker. I'm not sure if
- 12:25Speaker 2: he jumped in and read that one, uh, but it's
- 12:28Speaker 2: a it's a hard task finding a guy that's basically
- 12:32Speaker 2: off the radar, that has potential to just make one
- 12:35Speaker 2: change and and really shoot through the fantasy eschloon there.
- 12:39Speaker 2: And uh, Rooker really took that by storm. And like,
- 12:43Speaker 2: I just don't see anything in his profile to say
- 12:45Speaker 2: it can't continue to happen like it's it is impressive
- 12:49Speaker 2: and us he's gonna be great again next year. So yeah,
- 12:54Speaker 2: injury or not, he had a great season for me.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Yet to your point, gives me maybe a little hope that
- 12:59Speaker 2: the that we're going to have just a repeating it
- 13:01Speaker 2: next year. And I'm signing up for all day long.
- 13:04Speaker 2: So really thrilled to see what's going to happen. Hopefully
- 13:07Speaker 2: he looks fully healthy in the Springs.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree, So we will see where he starts
- 13:13Speaker 1: going in draft season, because I mean, I think he
- 13:16Speaker 1: could end up on either of our phantasy MVP hitters
- 13:19Speaker 1: if he's not being respected in draft tables next year,
- 13:23Speaker 1: because I am also on board that I'm willing to
- 13:26Speaker 1: take him pretty early just to be able to capitalize
- 13:29Speaker 1: on all that good work he's done.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Well, and I have to make that the shameless plug. Yeah,
- 13:34Speaker 2: Michael Toglia is my Brent Rooker for next year. He
- 13:38Speaker 2: on a very official Brent Rooker scale's nine out of ten.
- 13:41Speaker 2: I have no idea what that means, but it's good.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Very scientific, very scientific doctor Jeremy Brew over here, just
- 13:50Speaker 1: like doctor Keelan doing all the injury reports. We got
- 13:53Speaker 1: some PhDs up at Rasball, the PhD sales or something else,
- 13:59Speaker 1: that's for sure. But yes, and I will link to
- 14:06Speaker 1: that piece as well so that people can see it.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Because the number two player that you have on that
- 14:11Speaker 1: Brent Rooker piece is actually was one of your preseason picks,
- 14:14Speaker 1: so you can also hang around in the second half
- 14:16Speaker 1: and find out who that was. All right, next piece
- 14:19Speaker 1: of news that we have is Tomoyuki Sogano is going
- 14:23Speaker 1: to be coming over from MPB this offseason, so he
- 14:26Speaker 1: really broke out back in twenty seventeen during that WBC,
- 14:31Speaker 1: And there's been a couple of times over the years
- 14:33Speaker 1: where Sugano has been rumored to be posted, So he
- 14:37Speaker 1: will be coming over as a thirty five year old.
- 14:40Speaker 1: His birthday's actually Friday, It's October eleventh, So happy birthday
- 14:45Speaker 1: Tomoyuki Sugano out there. He has played for the Yuman
- 14:49Speaker 1: Yuri Giants his entire career and been one of the
- 14:52Speaker 1: best pitchers over there. He's kind of he's more of
- 14:56Speaker 1: like a I would say, like a bulldog pitcher, like
- 14:58Speaker 1: in terms of you get the electric st that came
- 15:00Speaker 1: from Darvish and from Otani and even Roki Sasaki and Yamamoto.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I would almost say that Sugano is I'm trying to
- 15:12Speaker 1: think of like a good like comparison because kind of
- 15:16Speaker 1: like Justin Verlander, where like, you know, maybe mid like
- 15:19Speaker 1: career Justin Verlander when some of like the the stuff
- 15:23Speaker 1: on his fastball degraded a little bit more, or I
- 15:26Speaker 1: think a little bit of like a right handed Kershaw
- 15:28Speaker 1: where just like he's a pitcher's pitcher, he's a fantastic
- 15:32Speaker 1: just piece and he will be thirty five coming over.
- 15:35Speaker 1: But I'm wondering, what are you looking for in terms
- 15:39Speaker 1: of him moving over from NPB. Is there like a
- 15:43Speaker 1: team that would really stand out to you that you
- 15:45Speaker 1: would love to see him land in, And what do
- 15:47Speaker 1: you think he can do in MLB coming into twenty
- 15:50Speaker 1: twenty five.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think he's an interesting use case here.
- 15:55Speaker 2: You have the age curve where he's clearly on the
- 15:58Speaker 2: back end of the that. You have a few years
- 16:01Speaker 2: that he was not living up to maybe the potential.
- 16:05Speaker 2: You know, he had three or four years there kind
- 16:07Speaker 2: of mid threes. In the last year or two he's
- 16:10Speaker 2: been just lights out dominant, And so I think there's
- 16:14Speaker 2: gonna be like a very wide range of interest in Sigano.
- 16:19Speaker 2: And I couldn't tell you if he's gonna sign for
- 16:21Speaker 2: five million or twenty five million or fifty million, Like
- 16:23Speaker 2: I just it feels like it could be a little
- 16:24Speaker 2: all over the place. But I think you're really looking
- 16:28Speaker 2: at any team that's looking for mid rotation depths, and
- 16:32Speaker 2: so I think it's any team it would would probably
- 16:37Speaker 2: have interest. But you are looking at any team with
- 16:40Speaker 2: the good defense that can can make that play and
- 16:43Speaker 2: then also you have the who's who of teams that
- 16:46Speaker 2: tend to play in that Japanese market. So you got
- 16:48Speaker 2: the Giants, you got the Dodgers, you get the the Mariners.
- 16:52Speaker 2: You know, you got those those key teams. You know,
- 16:55Speaker 2: the Cubs have been playing there a little bit more
- 16:57Speaker 2: with Imon Naga, So I think those are kind of
- 17:00Speaker 2: your most likely landing spots, you know, if if I
- 17:04Speaker 2: was to pick one, like, and I do not see
- 17:06Speaker 2: this happening, so sorry for throwing that's out there, but like,
- 17:09Speaker 2: I feel like the Royals are a really great fit
- 17:12Speaker 2: for uh Sugano here as far as like a defense
- 17:16Speaker 2: that seems to be emerging, a ballpark that is a
- 17:20Speaker 2: little tougher to hit in, but like with the control
- 17:22Speaker 2: that he has as somebody can kind of hold up
- 17:24Speaker 2: in that ballpark. So just a random gut feel of
- 17:28Speaker 2: like a team i'd love to see him on. But
- 17:30Speaker 2: I you know, if I was to pick a team
- 17:32Speaker 2: out of the hat right now, I'd say it feels
- 17:34Speaker 2: like the Giants feels like a Buster Posey making a
- 17:36Speaker 2: splash in the international market with the Miles Miclis of
- 17:43Speaker 2: just Japan League here coming over at this point, So
- 17:47Speaker 2: I don't know, how about you, where do you see
- 17:49Speaker 2: Sigano falling?
- 17:51Speaker 1: I mean, when you were kind of lining up what
- 17:54Speaker 1: you're looking at in terms of the team that might
- 17:56Speaker 1: be seeking out Sagano. Honestly, I was thinking of the
- 17:59Speaker 1: Mets a lot too. They're going to be looking for
- 18:02Speaker 1: number two, number three starter type. Sengo should be going
- 18:05Speaker 1: into next year healthy. Obviously, I think they have to
- 18:07Speaker 1: bring back Sean and I at whatever his asking price
- 18:11Speaker 1: is going to be, given how great he's been down
- 18:13Speaker 1: the stretch, and I think Sugano would slot in really
- 18:16Speaker 1: well as like a number two or number three there
- 18:19Speaker 1: for the Mets. And maybe I mean, I think that
- 18:23Speaker 1: this run for the Mets, especially as they've pushed themselves
- 18:26Speaker 1: into the NLCS, it's gonna just like make Steve Cohen
- 18:29Speaker 1: froth at the mouth to get to the World Series
- 18:31Speaker 1: if they don't complete the journey and win it all
- 18:35Speaker 1: this year. Because this team is starting to turn the
- 18:38Speaker 1: corner in some of those prospects that they brought back
- 18:40Speaker 1: from blowing it up last year are making their way up,
- 18:43Speaker 1: so we see the pieces coming together. I also wanted
- 18:46Speaker 1: to bring up Sugano because he has a pretty significant
- 18:49Speaker 1: card history Baseball card history. His rookie card from Japan,
- 18:53Speaker 1: the BBM set is in twenty thirteen, that's when he
- 18:56Speaker 1: debuted in Japan and MPB, so those will be of
- 19:00Speaker 1: available out there, and he had a card in the
- 19:03Speaker 1: twenty seventeen Bowman set as well with the World Baseball Classics,
- 19:08Speaker 1: where that set's actually Morgan so home because it's kind
- 19:10Speaker 1: of like Otani's first Bowman unofficially, and those are some
- 19:15Speaker 1: very pricey cards that the Sagano's. If you're looking to
- 19:19Speaker 1: invest in any of these before he comes over the
- 19:22Speaker 1: way you know yamamotor Imanaga did last year, that's where
- 19:25Speaker 1: you can start looking because I think over these next
- 19:27Speaker 1: couple of weeks it'll be the time where there's a
- 19:30Speaker 1: roll in those prices before it really kind of kicks
- 19:33Speaker 1: in that people realize Sagana's coming over, you.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Know, Yeah, and that's it. I think it's very interesting
- 19:38Speaker 2: card marketing. And I do think that with the best
- 19:42Speaker 2: comp you go back to last year with Shota Imanaga,
- 19:47Speaker 2: y Yoshi was a little bit I think it was
- 19:51Speaker 2: flash year, so I don't think that's a necessarily fair comparison,
- 19:54Speaker 2: like we're talking about Yoki Sasaki or something like that
- 19:57Speaker 2: then you know, that's a whole different ballgame that that
- 19:59Speaker 2: market is going to be crazy. But I think Sugano
- 20:03Speaker 2: will have a market. It's going to be a very
- 20:05Speaker 2: i'll say a prospect call up market is the way
- 20:07Speaker 2: I would look at it. You know, when he gets posted,
- 20:10Speaker 2: there's gonna be a little bump. When he gets signed
- 20:12Speaker 2: wherever he signs that it's gonna go up very fast,
- 20:15Speaker 2: and then it's gonna come back down, uh to kind
- 20:17Speaker 2: of within reason until the season starts and you just
- 20:20Speaker 2: kind of see what see what happens with him. So
- 20:23Speaker 2: I think it is the time to to buy here.
- 20:25Speaker 2: It's a low risk, medium reward, I think, is the
- 20:28Speaker 2: way I look at it. You know, I think it
- 20:31Speaker 2: ultimately comes down to kind of what kind of contract
- 20:33Speaker 2: he signs and what kind of interest. But it seems
- 20:35Speaker 2: like he's committed to trying to come over to the
- 20:37Speaker 2: MLB and and and shows show his stuff. See see
- 20:40Speaker 2: if the sea off the affairs.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. And I mean also kind of a low
- 20:45Speaker 1: key like legend of just baseball Sugana is in terms
- 20:49Speaker 1: of like what he's done in Japan with the Yoma
- 20:51Speaker 1: Yuri Giants, which is more akin to like honestly like
- 20:55Speaker 1: the Yankees over there, yep, in terms of like the
- 20:57Speaker 1: way that that franchise is venerated, so like, uh, if
- 21:00Speaker 1: he can come over and put together a decent Actually,
- 21:03Speaker 1: Tanaka is a pretty good I think comp for him
- 21:06Speaker 1: too coming over that like that sort of stuff where
- 21:09Speaker 1: just a crafty pitcher, maybe even like a tick better,
- 21:12Speaker 1: but obviously with the age. So I'm intrigued, Like I'm
- 21:15Speaker 1: really looking forward to him coming over. I thought he
- 21:18Speaker 1: would come over sooner, but I'm glad that he's getting
- 21:20Speaker 1: the chance.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Now.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Okay, well, let's move on to our next piece of news,
- 21:25Speaker 1: and that is I can't believe that this happened. This
- 21:28Speaker 1: kind of came out of nowhere over the last couple
- 21:30Speaker 1: of days that.
- 21:31Speaker 2: The we jinks this one because we thought I'll skip
- 21:34Speaker 2: Schack the Reds.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Like nope, yeah, the classic podcast jinks is back, but
- 21:40Speaker 1: the Reds higher Terry Francona, which we talked about this
- 21:43Speaker 1: a little bit last week with Puster Posey being added
- 21:46Speaker 1: as the Pobo in San Francisco, that I couldn't believe
- 21:50Speaker 1: that that happened because like Buster Posey partly retired to
- 21:53Speaker 1: like spend more time with his family and like took
- 21:56Speaker 1: the twenty twenty season off to like help take care
- 21:59Speaker 1: of his kids and seemed to just like want to
- 22:03Speaker 1: enjoy life outside of base football. And Francona had a
- 22:06Speaker 1: similar thing where obviously it is a little bit more
- 22:09Speaker 1: health related, but that's why he left the Cleveland Guardians
- 22:12Speaker 1: last year. I mean, he's i think probably a Hall
- 22:16Speaker 1: of fame manager that you know, what he did in
- 22:18Speaker 1: Boston and the stretch that he oversaw in Cleveland have
- 22:22Speaker 1: just been so tremendous. And also he's just like one
- 22:26Speaker 1: of those great guys of all of baseball where nobody
- 22:30Speaker 1: has anything ill willed to say about Terry Francona, that
- 22:34Speaker 1: everybody loves him. He's a great strategist, he's a great
- 22:37Speaker 1: players manager. And so Cincinnati, I mean, this is a
- 22:41Speaker 1: huge pickup for them that you can see maybe also
- 22:44Speaker 1: why that they after signing David Bell to that contract extension,
- 22:50Speaker 1: came back and fired him because they probably had something
- 22:53Speaker 1: cooking with Francona already. And that's a pretty significant upgrade
- 22:56Speaker 1: in terms of managers, in terms of clubhouse presence and
- 23:00Speaker 1: just leadership overall. So what do you think that this
- 23:03Speaker 1: does for the Cincinnati Reds with them hiring Tierry Francona.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know how you quantify the impact of it,
- 23:11Speaker 2: but I think it helps. I think it's it is
- 23:14Speaker 2: with the team. They have, the youth movement, the fun
- 23:18Speaker 2: they're having, Like Francona has always had these teams that
- 23:21Speaker 2: were like high energy. Like Franconia never seemed to have
- 23:24Speaker 2: the high energy, right, he just was like stoic and
- 23:26Speaker 2: just kind of the guy there, like the pulling up
- 23:29Speaker 2: the pump master, pulling the strings there. But like I
- 23:32Speaker 2: do feel like this Red team like needs is somebody
- 23:34Speaker 2: that just had a presence kind of kind of get
- 23:37Speaker 2: the most out of them and just set them on
- 23:39Speaker 2: the path and let them loose at the right time.
- 23:41Speaker 2: And that feels like Francona's model. So I do think
- 23:45Speaker 2: that this is good. I don't is it worth five
- 23:47Speaker 2: wins ten months, I don't know, but I do think
- 23:50Speaker 2: it is going to be impactful and it does make
- 23:53Speaker 2: me a little more intrigued into what the Reds can
- 23:54Speaker 2: do beyond what talent that they already had. So I
- 23:57Speaker 2: am surprised, like that to your point that this one,
- 23:59Speaker 2: like I just didn't see coming came out of left field.
- 24:03Speaker 2: You know, when he took time off for health issues,
- 24:04Speaker 2: I was sitting here going like, you know, did he
- 24:07Speaker 2: move to you know, Ohio and decide to decide to
- 24:12Speaker 2: try things out. Nope, he lives in Arizona. He's out
- 24:14Speaker 2: in Tucson. So it's like maybe, you know, maybe the
- 24:17Speaker 2: health came back together, and it sounds like, you know,
- 24:19Speaker 2: he just he couldn't step away from the game. Just
- 24:22Speaker 2: that itch. It's it's there, it needs to be scratched.
- 24:24Speaker 2: And Francona loves what he does, loves loves the game,
- 24:27Speaker 2: and you know, I think he's gonna probably be around
- 24:30Speaker 2: for a few more years. But man, see he's getting
- 24:33Speaker 2: up there. He's I think sixty five, so he's probably
- 24:37Speaker 2: got a few few years left. And that's what just
- 24:40Speaker 2: what the Reds need.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it's an incredible pull for them, and especially given
- 24:44Speaker 1: that young roster. I think it's going to be a
- 24:47Speaker 1: really significant hire to be able to just round that
- 24:50Speaker 1: team out. That it will be I think a big
- 24:54Speaker 1: booster confidence for Cincinnati Reds fans out there going in
- 24:57Speaker 1: next year. Okay, next piece of news on the other
- 25:00Speaker 1: end of the spectrum from the manager side that the
- 25:04Speaker 1: Colorado Rockies extended Bud Black for another year, so they
- 25:07Speaker 1: didn't even have to do this. He was a free
- 25:09Speaker 1: agent and he could have just walked. But Bud Black
- 25:14Speaker 1: and the Colorado Rockies cannot be separated. He joined them
- 25:18Speaker 1: in twenty seventeen and has gone six hundred and forty
- 25:22Speaker 1: nine and seven hundred and thirteen. That's a four to
- 25:26Speaker 1: seventy seven winning percentage. It's actually kind of impressive considering
- 25:30Speaker 1: how bad they've been the past few years. Actually I
- 25:36Speaker 1: got that wrong. That's what he was with the Padres.
- 25:39Speaker 1: He has been five hundred and thirty seven and six
- 25:41Speaker 1: fifty seven with the Rockies. That's a four to fifty
- 25:44Speaker 1: winning percentage. That makes more sense. And it's just in intriguing.
- 25:49Speaker 1: I think hallmarker, like uh, just lyne in the sand
- 25:55Speaker 1: to see that, like the Rockies are not changing, Like
- 25:59Speaker 1: it's kind of incredible the way that they've been able
- 26:02Speaker 1: to run this franchise and just kind of continue plotting
- 26:06Speaker 1: along and think that what they're doing is working and
- 26:09Speaker 1: will pull them out of whatever tail spin they're in.
- 26:13Speaker 1: And I mean, obviously they're making plenty of money. It's
- 26:15Speaker 1: a great ballpark. Fans still show up, but at some
- 26:19Speaker 1: point that gravy train's got to stop. And you would
- 26:22Speaker 1: think that the Rockies would just kind of want to
- 26:25Speaker 1: win as well. Like I can't imagine being in that
- 26:27Speaker 1: organization just kind of always having the crap kicked out
- 26:31Speaker 1: of you. But what do you think but Black can
- 26:35Speaker 1: maybe do with the Rockies last year, or do you
- 26:37Speaker 1: think that there's another side to this that you know,
- 26:40Speaker 1: this remotivates the Rockies to win, win for the Gipper
- 26:43Speaker 1: in twenty five.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I I don't see that. I don't
- 26:48Speaker 2: see them, you know, really just taking off. I kind
- 26:50Speaker 2: of look at it is a bridge year for the Rockies,
- 26:54Speaker 2: like they've had, they had some good things happening this year,
- 26:57Speaker 2: they have, you know, glimpses of hope. And I think
- 27:00Speaker 2: that the Rockies, I don't I don't really want to
- 27:03Speaker 2: say there's a big strategy behind this. The Rockies is
- 27:06Speaker 2: just always kind of been a team has kind of
- 27:08Speaker 2: just floated around out there. But I look at it
- 27:11Speaker 2: as another year of a veteran manager trying to kind
- 27:14Speaker 2: of get a little bit more out of the young guys,
- 27:16Speaker 2: and that at some point the Rocky is going to
- 27:18Speaker 2: look to try to breach five hundred and then make
- 27:21Speaker 2: a leap and do something different Like I So, I
- 27:23Speaker 2: see it just as the Bridge years, they're still trying
- 27:25Speaker 2: to kind of sculpt some of that young talent like
- 27:29Speaker 2: Tovar and guys like that out there that that should
- 27:33Speaker 2: be coming into their own and do need that veteran presence.
- 27:35Speaker 2: So I look at it just to like a, Hey,
- 27:38Speaker 2: we a lot of other things going on, but Black's
- 27:39Speaker 2: not the issue. Uh. We got to address the rest
- 27:42Speaker 2: of the organ structure and strategy. Uh, So let's keep
- 27:45Speaker 2: something that we know is a consistent, reliable guy at
- 27:49Speaker 2: the help and move on and address other issues.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, as a Waiver Wire writer, I just uh,
- 27:57Speaker 1: there's nothing better than tracking the Rockies to be able
- 28:00Speaker 1: to leverage it for content. So I'm pumped for this.
- 28:03Speaker 1: And also I'm sure that Carrie Ca out there, who's
- 28:07Speaker 1: right in our blurb Stumps, is also very pumped that
- 28:10Speaker 1: the Colorade Rockies are the gift that keep on given.
- 28:13Speaker 1: I love them.
- 28:15Speaker 2: They Oh, they absolutely are.
- 28:18Speaker 1: All right, Well, let's move on to some card news.
- 28:21Speaker 1: So we do have a few things that have come through,
- 28:23Speaker 1: and last week we were trying to leverage some of
- 28:26Speaker 1: the SEO platforms out there that are harvesting all the
- 28:30Speaker 1: data from this podcast and putting it into AI models.
- 28:33Speaker 1: By talking about Paul Skins and Livvy Dunn with the
- 28:36Speaker 1: player at the month PC, I'm doing it again because
- 28:40Speaker 1: it was Livvy Dunn's birthday I think last Thursday, so
- 28:44Speaker 1: we didn't curse the birthday because it does look like
- 28:46Speaker 1: Paul Skins came through with a great gift that she
- 28:49Speaker 1: seemed to enjoy and especially like, yeah, if TOPS is
- 28:52Speaker 1: gonna leverage this for views and clicks and likes, I'm
- 28:57Speaker 1: going to as well on this podcast. But Paul Skin
- 29:00Speaker 1: gifted Livvy done a baseball card actually of her and
- 29:05Speaker 1: their dog together that you can actually do this through
- 29:08Speaker 1: TOPS you can get custom cards from them, and so
- 29:10Speaker 1: that's obviously what Paul Stein's has done here. Also maybe
- 29:14Speaker 1: like low key, like Livvy not that grave of a
- 29:18Speaker 1: gift because like he's got to deal with TOPS, Like
- 29:21Speaker 1: I'm sure he just called up like whoever drops off
- 29:24Speaker 1: all those cards that need to be signed at his
- 29:26Speaker 1: place and was like, Yo, can you hook me up
- 29:28Speaker 1: with one of these cards? I guess a little bit
- 29:30Speaker 1: of thought went into it, though, like he had to
- 29:31Speaker 1: seek out the photo and make sure that he got
- 29:34Speaker 1: all the details on the back right. But have you
- 29:38Speaker 1: ever gotten a custom card or have you seen somebody
- 29:41Speaker 1: that's gotten a custom card for Tops? And what do
- 29:44Speaker 1: you want to say about Livvy Done and Paul Skans
- 29:47Speaker 1: to also just add into this full SEO leverage and scraping.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the only custom cards that I have
- 29:57Speaker 2: is my son's like first grade baseball team and probably
- 30:03Speaker 2: one of me sitting around somewhere too. I have to admit,
- 30:06Speaker 2: like you you know those uh we're all the rage
- 30:09Speaker 2: back in the day. But it's it's an interesting play,
- 30:12Speaker 2: and it does show that TOPS is kind of watching
- 30:16Speaker 2: what's going on social media and to a frank, they're
- 30:19Speaker 2: a little money grab here and there, like just publicity
- 30:22Speaker 2: trying to make things happen. So I think they're they're
- 30:25Speaker 2: leading into Paul skeins and and Lovey Dunn here are
- 30:28Speaker 2: going to be a topic for years to come, you know,
- 30:33Speaker 2: And I think that's that's fine. That's that's good for baseball,
- 30:36Speaker 2: it's good for card collecting. It'll be interesting to see
- 30:39Speaker 2: if there's like Livy Dunn inserts and Alan Ginter, uh,
- 30:43Speaker 2: things like that. Wouldn't be shocked with it.
- 30:45Speaker 1: You gotta be one at one some point, right.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Yeah, you have to think that that's that's definitely gonna
- 30:51Speaker 2: be the case. So I'm I'm all for it. I
- 30:53Speaker 2: think it's fun. Uh And it could be, you know,
- 30:56Speaker 2: the next version of Justin Verlander and Kate Upton or
- 31:01Speaker 2: something like that, you know, Baseball's first couple, whatever you
- 31:06Speaker 2: want to call it. So it'll be interesting to see
- 31:10Speaker 2: if Tops capitalizes further on this pairing.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, and I think they will. So we do
- 31:18Speaker 1: have Allen Ginter coming out soon at the end of
- 31:21Speaker 1: the month. So I also wanted to bring up this
- 31:24Speaker 1: Paul Schiens news because obviously he's going to be featured
- 31:27Speaker 1: in Top Update, which we'll be dropping just next week
- 31:31Speaker 1: on October sixteenth, So certainly next week we're going to
- 31:34Speaker 1: have a huge overview of that set. But you will
- 31:37Speaker 1: be able to get that in stores starting on Wednesday
- 31:41Speaker 1: to sixteenth, and I mean we'll be seeing people breaking
- 31:45Speaker 1: that I think all weekend as people are really getting
- 31:48Speaker 1: pumped for Tops Update, and the Rookie list is outstanding,
- 31:52Speaker 1: maybe one of the best kind of checklists that Tops
- 31:55Speaker 1: has rolled out in any product, especially flagship product, in
- 32:00Speaker 1: a few years. That like it since maybe like the
- 32:02Speaker 1: O tani Ish year, so it's it's gonna be a
- 32:05Speaker 1: huge product. There's gonna be lots going into it, and
- 32:08Speaker 1: so we'll have that overview to help you sort through
- 32:11Speaker 1: what to buy and maybe what to avoid out in
- 32:14Speaker 1: the market. But we also had a few other calendar,
- 32:19Speaker 1: a few other releases added to the calendar, as this
- 32:24Speaker 1: is really the prime baseball season, getting into the holiday season,
- 32:28Speaker 1: especially as you know things are kicking up as you know,
- 32:31Speaker 1: we're digging through cards and putting them on e Bay
- 32:34Speaker 1: and others are as well. That today on October ninth,
- 32:38Speaker 1: we had Bowman Sterling come out. They the surprise release
- 32:41Speaker 1: of TOPS Cosmic Chrome is happening on Friday ten eleven.
- 32:44Speaker 1: So that's a hugely popular one and it's kind of
- 32:48Speaker 1: up to a sh old stick. I love it. It's
- 32:50Speaker 1: beautiful that like, it's certainly something I love picking up
- 32:55Speaker 1: PC singles of and just looking at the cards. They're
- 32:58Speaker 1: fantastic pieces of art, I think, Like I said, Tops
- 33:03Speaker 1: update next week on the sixteenth. We got Allen and
- 33:06Speaker 1: Ginter on the thirtieth, and then they also announced this
- 33:08Speaker 1: week Top Stadium Club coming back on November sixth, I'm
- 33:13Speaker 1: warming up to the design, but it's Top Stadium Club.
- 33:16Speaker 1: I'm obviously gonna love it all the time. But I'm
- 33:20Speaker 1: guessing that's probably what you're most excited for. But what
- 33:23Speaker 1: really stands out to you with this kind of next
- 33:25Speaker 1: week of baseball card releases? And are you already looking
- 33:29Speaker 1: through your bank account to see how many boxes you
- 33:31Speaker 1: can afford?
- 33:32Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a challenge here because I outside of Sterling,
- 33:38Speaker 2: which I actually enjoy Sterling generally, maybe the secondary market
- 33:43Speaker 2: maybe not from a ripping perspective, but every one of
- 33:46Speaker 2: those there's like a reason to go after, there's a
- 33:49Speaker 2: reason to be excited about Cosmic. It is just such
- 33:51Speaker 2: such an interesting news set that to your point, it
- 33:54Speaker 2: has some great designs, great art update this year, it
- 33:57Speaker 2: does feel like this is gonna be one of those
- 33:59Speaker 2: like tops update where you look back three or four
- 34:02Speaker 2: years ago and be like, my goodness, that was loaded.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Like it does feel like it's absolutely gonna be a
- 34:06Speaker 2: loaded product. And I know we'll we'll we'll dig into
- 34:09Speaker 2: that in an upcoming podcast. Alan Giner like just always fun.
- 34:16Speaker 2: There's something about that that set that it's just the
- 34:19Speaker 2: eclectic nature of that. And then Stadium Club like it's
- 34:22Speaker 2: it is Stadium Club. It's well, that's that's a beauty
- 34:26Speaker 2: of a set. And every year it seems like it's
- 34:29Speaker 2: just keeps hitting. It does, it does its thing, and
- 34:32Speaker 2: again I think this is gonna be another strong year
- 34:34Speaker 2: for it with all the rookies gonna be in there,
- 34:37Speaker 2: all the short prints, unique variations that you'll see. So
- 34:42Speaker 2: I if you, if you have to ask me right now,
- 34:44Speaker 2: I think it Tops updates where I'm gonna spend my time.
- 34:48Speaker 2: I just I think it's gonna be just such a fantastic,
- 34:50Speaker 2: uh fantastic product this year. Otherwise, uh, you know, Stadium
- 34:55Speaker 2: Stadium is the way to go. If if you're forcing
- 34:57Speaker 2: my hand, but I think my my pod it's going
- 35:00Speaker 2: to be emptied on on update. I'll probably rip a little,
- 35:03Speaker 2: but mostly chase on the secondary just because man prices
- 35:07Speaker 2: are still rough.
- 35:08Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, you're not the only one that's an
- 35:11Speaker 1: on TOPS update. I did just look up the Allen
- 35:13Speaker 1: and Ginter checklist. Livy Dunn is not on it. She's
- 35:16Speaker 1: not included as like one of this that's a miss. Yeah, exactly.
- 35:21Speaker 1: You gotta think it's coming at some point or maybe
- 35:24Speaker 1: like a dual Paul schemes, Livvy Dune like Auto or something,
- 35:28Speaker 1: but Auto relic like, oh yeah, that could get messy
- 35:31Speaker 1: real fast too. So maybe that's a little bit of
- 35:33Speaker 1: like with the path that they're trying to work through
- 35:37Speaker 1: at Tops, but that is I'm yeah, I'm looking forward
- 35:42Speaker 1: to Allen and Ginter that it is fun. It's got
- 35:45Speaker 1: a lot of cool short prints, and but Tops Team
- 35:48Speaker 1: Club absolutely, that's where it's at that I saw they're
- 35:50Speaker 1: going back to I think the ninety three Beam Team design,
- 35:54Speaker 1: but like the Beam Team that design that they're using
- 35:57Speaker 1: from Stadium Club this year is just like right up our,
- 36:00Speaker 1: It's just like the most classic Beam Team design you
- 36:02Speaker 1: could ever imagine.
- 36:05Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to it. It's gonna be a fun,
- 36:07Speaker 2: fun next month of ripping.
- 36:10Speaker 1: All right. Well, yeah, with that, you can look at
- 36:13Speaker 1: some of those links in the show notes. But we're
- 36:15Speaker 1: gonna take a small break and come back with retrospective
- 36:19Speaker 1: on some of our preseason picks at rasball dot com.
- 36:21Speaker 1: So stick around, all right, Welcome back, everybody. So we
- 36:40Speaker 1: are going to get into some retrospective analysis on some
- 36:45Speaker 1: awful picks maybe we made, but we hit on some.
- 36:48Speaker 1: It is really hard making picks, I would say from
- 36:51Speaker 1: like a preseason perspective, just especially given how much of
- 36:55Speaker 1: fantasy baseball is I've found out over the years is
- 37:00Speaker 1: you can lose the season at the draft table, but
- 37:04Speaker 1: you can't win it at the draft table. So I
- 37:07Speaker 1: don't think that we necessarily had any of these that
- 37:09Speaker 1: would have lost you your league, especially because we're talking
- 37:12Speaker 1: about fantasy analysis. We were really digging deep to try
- 37:16Speaker 1: to find players that can just help those teams out there,
- 37:19Speaker 1: and usually towards the back ends of drafts or middle
- 37:23Speaker 1: tier players that stood out for us. So I will
- 37:26Speaker 1: link to it in the show notes. But back in March,
- 37:29Speaker 1: we made these picks, and we made Rookie of the
- 37:32Speaker 1: Year MVP, and Cy Young for each league across the staff,
- 37:37Speaker 1: as well as more fantasy related ones in terms of
- 37:40Speaker 1: a sleeper, a bust, infatuation, a comeback, a most Valuable
- 37:46Speaker 1: Fantasy player, most Valuable Fantasy hitter, or the Valuable Fantasy
- 37:53Speaker 1: pitcher because it's the FP that is a mouseful. Yeah,
- 38:00Speaker 1: couldn't we just say like yeah, yeah, yeah, best Fantasy
- 38:04Speaker 1: pitcher like or yeah, and so what those were especially
- 38:09Speaker 1: going for is because I think, honestly, like we even
- 38:12Speaker 1: have to explain this to ourselves when we're making these
- 38:14Speaker 1: picks before the season. The sleeper and bust are different
- 38:18Speaker 1: from that most valuable Fantasy pitcher and hitter because, uh,
- 38:22Speaker 1: sleepers we're looking for are guys who just are really
- 38:26Speaker 1: underdrafted in lots of leagues, are maybe even totally undrafted.
- 38:30Speaker 1: As opposed to those most valuable Fantasy pitcher and hitter.
- 38:34Speaker 1: What we were looking for are players that you know
- 38:37Speaker 1: obviously like if you're drafted in the first or second round,
- 38:41Speaker 1: those are your true gems. But these are the guys
- 38:43Speaker 1: that helped carry you through and win leagues because they
- 38:46Speaker 1: are your Brent Rooker for example, where you drafted them
- 38:49Speaker 1: in the middle tiers and they ended up being a
- 38:52Speaker 1: first round player. That they were guys that we were
- 38:55Speaker 1: targeting as a group to look and kind of gain
- 38:59Speaker 1: multiple rounds of value for us. And so yeah, with that,
- 39:03Speaker 1: I think it's just good to kind of also rehash
- 39:06Speaker 1: what we were thinking at being of the season, see
- 39:08Speaker 1: if there's any strategy changes that we've gone through in
- 39:11Speaker 1: twenty twenty four and how we might approach things in
- 39:14Speaker 1: going into twenty twenty five, or you know, what these
- 39:18Speaker 1: picks might have told us about how their seasons went,
- 39:22Speaker 1: and maybe you know other week spots and where we
- 39:25Speaker 1: evaluate or strong spots. So like I said, we've we
- 39:30Speaker 1: made MVP Rookie of the Year, say Young votes. You
- 39:34Speaker 1: can look at those. Some people hit them, but they're
- 39:36Speaker 1: really hard because it is just a war of attrition.
- 39:38Speaker 1: Partly that you know, pretty much everybody picks Spencer Strider
- 39:42Speaker 1: and Ronald Lacunia Junior, so you can check that out.
- 39:45Speaker 1: I will tooot my own horn for my Jackson Merrill
- 39:48Speaker 1: Rookie of the Year in the in the National League.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Pick that that was the only one and you nailed
- 39:55Speaker 1: on the other hand, No.
- 39:57Speaker 2: No, nothing, okay, Yeah, somebody I didn't nail anything I did.
- 40:02Speaker 2: I did, okay, except for my pictures. Got all got
- 40:04Speaker 2: hurt in the first two weeks of the season.
- 40:06Speaker 1: Yeah they did. Yeah, Spencer Strid and Shane Bieber. I
- 40:09Speaker 1: will say Lineup Builder nailed Aaron Judge. He was the
- 40:11Speaker 1: only one with Aaron Judge in the al MVP and
- 40:15Speaker 1: anybody else. I don't think anybody got either of this.
- 40:19Speaker 1: So nobody got an Elsy Young because Chris Taal came
- 40:21Speaker 1: out nowhere. A couple handful of people got toak Schooble,
- 40:25Speaker 1: so that was jkj latchkey kid Laura did and so
- 40:29Speaker 1: just the three of them got the al Cy Young
- 40:32Speaker 1: Rookie of the Year in the al nobody got that's
- 40:36Speaker 1: actually somebody nailed it on the sleeper. Be Don nailed
- 40:39Speaker 1: Colton Kowser for his sleeper, but nobody had Colton Kowsard,
- 40:43Speaker 1: who's probably gonna win that award for Rookie of the
- 40:45Speaker 1: Year and MVP. And we had a handful of people
- 40:48Speaker 1: that went with Otani that that wasn't totally out of
- 40:51Speaker 1: the blue. But I do think also in when we
- 40:55Speaker 1: get into these fantasy picks, we will make our favorite
- 40:58Speaker 1: pick of like who had the best pick. I know
- 41:01Speaker 1: we are Rasball and like usually we ras on people
- 41:04Speaker 1: a little bit, but I figured it'd be a little
- 41:06Speaker 1: bit mean to call people out. And we also represent
- 41:09Speaker 1: the Midwest division of Rasball, so we can't get mean
- 41:13Speaker 1: around here. That's really against our nature. And this I
- 41:16Speaker 1: think our heads mind exploded if we tried to do that.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Yeah, we can do. We're the ones that wait if
- 41:23Speaker 2: people buy at the stop side, so the four way stops,
- 41:25Speaker 2: like we gotta be nice midless nice.
- 41:27Speaker 1: Yes, Okay, so the sleepers, we will start there, and
- 41:32Speaker 1: I think you nailed yours. So you had Carry Carpenter
- 41:36Speaker 1: as your sleeper. I mean part of it is he
- 41:38Speaker 1: didn't get a full season in, but I mean I
- 41:40Speaker 1: think if you're looking for those skills to really come together,
- 41:44Speaker 1: Carry Carpenter showed it this year. And mine was later
- 41:48Speaker 1: to Varis, which not necessarily the biggest hit but returned
- 41:53Speaker 1: flat value in a twelve teamer and a fifteen teamer
- 41:55Speaker 1: was worth Let me pull that up because that is
- 41:59Speaker 1: a especially where I was looking at him. I had him,
- 42:02Speaker 1: I took him in TGFBI, but didn't hold him for
- 42:05Speaker 1: too long. He was worth four bucks there in a
- 42:07Speaker 1: fifteen teamer. So it came around for Laoti ta Varis eventually.
- 42:12Speaker 1: But yeah, what led you to picking Carry Carpenter at
- 42:15Speaker 1: the beginning of the season, And how do you evaluate
- 42:19Speaker 1: yourself here on this sleeper?
- 42:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean Carry Carpenter just you know, he's been
- 42:24Speaker 2: a guy that just has quality of contact and he
- 42:27Speaker 2: had like that basically you know, cleanup spot locked down
- 42:31Speaker 2: for Detroit. Like it's as simple as that. And it's
- 42:34Speaker 2: like we almost at about Brent Rooker's kind of the
- 42:35Speaker 2: same thing. Like not the highlight team, but a guy
- 42:38Speaker 2: that just seems to hit the ball hard and just
- 42:41Speaker 2: can have a little growth. He's a young guy, and
- 42:43Speaker 2: so that's really what it came down to, is that
- 42:46Speaker 2: you know, can can we seal a growth? And we did,
- 42:48Speaker 2: like he did only get eighty games. But I'm not
- 42:52Speaker 2: an expert at math here, but you know, when you
- 42:55Speaker 2: double his what he did, you know it was a
- 42:57Speaker 2: thirty homer on hundred RBI type pace season WRC plus
- 43:01Speaker 2: one fifty six, like somewhere in the range of that.
- 43:05Speaker 2: But it was a great season for him. But because
- 43:09Speaker 2: he missed time, I think that the discounts still there.
- 43:12Speaker 2: I think it's still gonna be another potential breakout year
- 43:16Speaker 2: number two. Sleeper at number two, I think it's I
- 43:19Speaker 2: don't know if the definition between sleeper breakout, but I
- 43:22Speaker 2: kind of see more on the breakout now because he's
- 43:25Speaker 2: he definitely should be on radars if he wasn't already.
- 43:27Speaker 2: So I don't think it's changing anything for how I
- 43:30Speaker 2: look at him next year. And really it's I keep
- 43:33Speaker 2: looking at the sleeper guys, that's just the guy that
- 43:35Speaker 2: just needs the break, needs a little the time, and
- 43:37Speaker 2: just has that really high quality of contact. That's kind
- 43:40Speaker 2: of guy I'm looking for in any sleeper. Don't give
- 43:43Speaker 2: me the guy that needs to figure out a strikeout problem.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Don't give me the guy that needs to change the
- 43:47Speaker 2: launch angle. Give me the guy that hits the ball
- 43:49Speaker 2: really really well, really well to all fields and in
- 43:52Speaker 2: the great spot in the lineup. That's that's gonna come
- 43:55Speaker 2: through more times than that. Yeah.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's a great call. And I mean,
- 44:02Speaker 1: I think using that for evaluating sleepers is right where
- 44:05Speaker 1: you're at too, in terms of like going in twenty five,
- 44:07Speaker 1: I think that's kind of a sound strategy and kind
- 44:10Speaker 1: of mindset as well. So with Lao Tavaris, I know
- 44:13Speaker 1: it wasn't like the biggest hit. It was a slight hit,
- 44:16Speaker 1: I would say, in terms of sleeper. I was hoping
- 44:18Speaker 1: that he would be able to return more twelveteen value,
- 44:21Speaker 1: and part of it is, like what I was really
- 44:24Speaker 1: into about Tavares was the speed. So in twenty twenty
- 44:28Speaker 1: three he had swiped fourteen bags and that's where he
- 44:31Speaker 1: picked up a lot of the value here in twenty
- 44:33Speaker 1: twenty four with twenty three bags, but a lot of
- 44:36Speaker 1: it too is you know, he was lined up to
- 44:38Speaker 1: play center field every day for the Texas Rangers of
- 44:41Speaker 1: solid fielders, so he stays on the field even if
- 44:44Speaker 1: he's at the bottom of the lineup. It kind of
- 44:46Speaker 1: what I liked about Tavares coming into the season is
- 44:49Speaker 1: that like you were buying him at that floor price
- 44:52Speaker 1: already in any kind of ceiling that he gave you
- 44:56Speaker 1: the you know, those extra stolen bases were totally gravy.
- 45:00Speaker 1: I just kind of I think the overall strategy was,
- 45:04Speaker 1: you know, valid overall. I just kind of slightly missed that.
- 45:08Speaker 1: I wish I could have done like Breton Doyle with
- 45:10Speaker 1: this at the beginning of the season. You know, that's
- 45:12Speaker 1: the type of player where I'm looking at, you know,
- 45:14Speaker 1: plays a solid up the middle infield, up up the
- 45:18Speaker 1: middle spot either you know, middle infield, center field. We'll
- 45:21Speaker 1: actually get into this that my infatuation I think is
- 45:24Speaker 1: also part of this kind of strategy and ended up hitting.
- 45:28Speaker 1: But somebody who will play every day and is cheap
- 45:32Speaker 1: cheap price, and if you're in a deep, deep league,
- 45:34Speaker 1: somebody that you can throw into like your last large
- 45:37Speaker 1: starting spot, your first guy off the bench. That these
- 45:39Speaker 1: guys just return value because they're athletic and in today's game,
- 45:45Speaker 1: they don't need to hit more than two twenty nine,
- 45:47Speaker 1: like layouted to various to be able to return positive value.
- 45:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're absolutely right, Like that's there's a
- 45:54Speaker 2: lot more value and these really good, I would say,
- 45:58Speaker 2: fringe athletic guys than they're used to be. And uh,
- 46:02Speaker 2: as long as you're not paying paying up for him,
- 46:05Speaker 2: that's where it's okay. And I think, uh, the go
- 46:07Speaker 2: the other way, and that's where it gets dangerous is
- 46:09Speaker 2: if you start to project more on there. So I
- 46:12Speaker 2: think you're always gonna have an interesting sleeper pick if
- 46:14Speaker 2: you look at the speedy, talented guy and a good team. Uh,
- 46:18Speaker 2: there's gonna you know, it's not gonna be too hard
- 46:20Speaker 2: to eke that value out.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree. Who are you gonna pick from
- 46:24Speaker 1: our squad of writers that had the best sleeper pick
- 46:27Speaker 1: in your mind?
- 46:28Speaker 2: Oh this this this is tough. But I think, you know,
- 46:36Speaker 2: not trying to be a homer here to our editor,
- 46:39Speaker 2: But I think I have to go with trust with
- 46:41Speaker 2: Colt Keith. I think that one, uh you know, was
- 46:44Speaker 2: probably the best one. Beat on. I get Cowser. I
- 46:47Speaker 2: just I've i've cooled on Cowser a little bit. I
- 46:50Speaker 2: just don't know that that's gonna stick around as much
- 46:52Speaker 2: as it could, even though he has the volume there,
- 46:55Speaker 2: and so I'm gonna give us a trust on the
- 46:57Speaker 2: Colt Keith, I think that was a really great, great pick.
- 46:59Speaker 2: I think there's a few other better players, but not
- 47:02Speaker 2: ones that were cheap. As cheap as you can get
- 47:05Speaker 2: them and return the value, and they did. Like Josh
- 47:08Speaker 2: Naylor on there, you just had to pay up for him,
- 47:11Speaker 2: and he did deliver on that value, But I don't
- 47:13Speaker 2: think it was as big of a leap as what
- 47:15Speaker 2: you saw with like a guy like Colt Keith. So
- 47:17Speaker 2: how about you, who are you going to pick as
- 47:19Speaker 2: far as who made the best call come into the season.
- 47:22Speaker 1: Yeah, I think those are solid. I think the one
- 47:24Speaker 1: that also stands out to me is the great knoc
- 47:28Speaker 1: I actually don't know how to pronounce that. I'm only
- 47:30Speaker 1: it's some one of those things where I've only read it,
- 47:31Speaker 1: so sorry out there if I mispronounced it. But with
- 47:34Speaker 1: Jose Caballero, a great pick, you know, pulled in three
- 47:39Speaker 1: or four dollars of value in a twelve teamer and
- 47:41Speaker 1: was really huge for steals and me was able to
- 47:45Speaker 1: cover lots of different positions, and if you had him
- 47:48Speaker 1: in a league, I'm sure he saved you in plenty
- 47:51Speaker 1: of spots. Okay, well, let's move on to the bust,
- 47:54Speaker 1: where I think we both nailed our players here pretty well.
- 47:58Speaker 1: So you picked Nico Horner and I picked Nick Pavetta,
- 48:02Speaker 1: So I was just looking up. Nick Pivetta returned two
- 48:08Speaker 1: dollars of value in our player raider, which is not
- 48:11Speaker 1: where you were picking him early in the season. He
- 48:13Speaker 1: probably would have costed you somewhere in the mid teens,
- 48:16Speaker 1: and Nico Horner returned eleven dollars of value, but certainly
- 48:20Speaker 1: in draft rooms was going more in like the twenty
- 48:23Speaker 1: ish dollars range. So I think these are both hits,
- 48:25Speaker 1: and I will I mean, you can almost rewind back
- 48:29Speaker 1: to the beginning of the year when we both had
- 48:31Speaker 1: these as our bus I think when we did the
- 48:33Speaker 1: Cubs and Red Sox previews. But explain to me what
- 48:37Speaker 1: you didn't like about Nico Horner and are you going
- 48:39Speaker 1: to be carrying that forward going into twenty five.
- 48:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm definitely caring it forward. No change here, and
- 48:45Speaker 2: it all stemmed around the market value for Nico Horner.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Nico Horner is a good baseball player, don't get me wrong,
- 48:51Speaker 2: But his whole game was based on the rum production
- 48:55Speaker 2: like scoring runs and steals, and the power profile just
- 49:00Speaker 2: was there. And I think people were paying for like
- 49:03Speaker 2: this young up and coming bath that was going to
- 49:05Speaker 2: bring more than just the steals. And he did go
- 49:08Speaker 2: so far out of bounds on that. You know, previous
- 49:10Speaker 2: year twenty three on steals, you know, he had over
- 49:13Speaker 2: forty steals, and so to be able to do that
- 49:15Speaker 2: again was gonna take another kind of career year from him,
- 49:19Speaker 2: and he just didn't quite do that. He didn't have
- 49:21Speaker 2: a bad year relative you know, twenty four to twenty three,
- 49:23Speaker 2: took step back in home runs by two, hit seven,
- 49:27Speaker 2: he took a step back in twelve and steals thirty one,
- 49:30Speaker 2: and so he was a valuable player to your point.
- 49:33Speaker 2: But for whatever reason at the draft table, like people
- 49:36Speaker 2: were paying for him, Like if you just looked at
- 49:38Speaker 2: like the like prayer your stats or even some of
- 49:41Speaker 2: the projections for Nico horn or people were paying for
- 49:43Speaker 2: him like he was a twenty thirty guy. Like I
- 49:46Speaker 2: don't understand what it was. And you you couldn't see
- 49:49Speaker 2: it in the numbers, and I remember I got this
- 49:51Speaker 2: stripped a few times in my rankings of you're terrible?
- 49:54Speaker 2: Why are you Nico Horne, Like it's just not there,
- 49:57Speaker 2: Like it's there's nothing more to cut for Nico Horner
- 50:01Speaker 2: because he's a one dimensional guy. You're paying for Leonti
- 50:04Speaker 2: Taveras at twenty bucks, Like, it's just not there. So
- 50:08Speaker 2: and he does nothing to change my opinion this year
- 50:10Speaker 2: because he was Nico Horner. So I don't think this
- 50:15Speaker 2: was out of the limb. It's just Nico Horner. If
- 50:17Speaker 2: he does what Nico Horner does is not could be
- 50:19Speaker 2: worth what people think he is. So to me, that
- 50:23Speaker 2: was just a no brainer. But maybe I'm a little foolish.
- 50:25Speaker 2: So how about you, how are you feeling about your
- 50:30Speaker 2: Nick Povetta pick. You gotta be feeling pretty good.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Right, yeah. I mean he did return positive value and
- 50:38Speaker 1: like he put up plenty of strikeouts for you throughout
- 50:42Speaker 1: the season. But boy, did that era really grind this year.
- 50:47Speaker 1: You know, it was a negative value of e Ray
- 50:49Speaker 1: in terms of negative point four and a lot of
- 50:54Speaker 1: he was just a negative return in wins too when
- 50:57Speaker 1: you were taking him as a starting pitcher. It's a
- 50:59Speaker 1: lot of like what I was talking about in the preseason.
- 51:02Speaker 1: He does well in short bursts, and that doesn't put
- 51:07Speaker 1: him in line for wins. It allows him to give
- 51:10Speaker 1: up a lot of homers. I think when especially he's
- 51:13Speaker 1: giving through that like late second and third time through
- 51:16Speaker 1: the order, that he's never going to go deep in games.
- 51:18Speaker 1: So he's really tough in a five y five roto
- 51:21Speaker 1: league or even a quality starts league where you're trying
- 51:23Speaker 1: to look for a little bit of length out of
- 51:25Speaker 1: you're starting pitcher. That I think lots of people were
- 51:28Speaker 1: viewing him as a possible kind of like number fantasy
- 51:31Speaker 1: number two, and I just can never get there. And
- 51:35Speaker 1: especially when you're in finn My Park for half your games,
- 51:39Speaker 1: it's not a great profile. I love the stuff metrics,
- 51:42Speaker 1: and I think he will always have his fans out
- 51:45Speaker 1: there because of that. He really pops when you're ever
- 51:48Speaker 1: comparing like spin rates and strikeout rates and all that
- 51:51Speaker 1: kind of stuff. But he just is not a real
- 51:54Speaker 1: good life pitcher, and so I think that's a big
- 51:57Speaker 1: factor of it, of like, because he's not gonna stick
- 52:00Speaker 1: around and get those wins. He's just tough for fantasy.
- 52:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you're right, Like he's there, he's a
- 52:08Speaker 2: he's a dreamer, he's a guy you can dream on,
- 52:09Speaker 2: a guy you can reject. And it just doesn't come
- 52:13Speaker 2: together for more than a few starts at a time.
- 52:15Speaker 2: But those two starts are so tempting. It's kind of
- 52:18Speaker 2: like Blake Snell, but Blake's not actually figured it out,
- 52:20Speaker 2: or Blake Snell just puts all the bad.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Ones together and all the good ones together. So yes, okay,
- 52:25Speaker 1: who is your favorite bust pick out of all of
- 52:28Speaker 1: our writers.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm and this one's gonna sound a little fun,
- 52:32Speaker 2: but I'm gonna go with a bunch of singles in
- 52:34Speaker 2: his Yoshinobu Yamamoto pick, just because if you if you
- 52:37Speaker 2: looked at all of our picks for Rookie of the Year,
- 52:40Speaker 2: like Yamamoto like had the slate for the most part
- 52:43Speaker 2: in the NL, and I think it took a lot,
- 52:45Speaker 2: a lot of goll to go out and say he's
- 52:47Speaker 2: not gonna be what everybody thinks he is. And like
- 52:50Speaker 2: he was getting drafted in that top like five ten
- 52:52Speaker 2: pitchers like regularly and he just hit his body just
- 52:58Speaker 2: didn't hold up. I know it's an inch reout because
- 53:00Speaker 2: he had a pretty good, pretty good win loss record,
- 53:03Speaker 2: really good at e RA like good strikers, Like he
- 53:05Speaker 2: was really good when he pitched, which like sounds like
- 53:09Speaker 2: the motto of all Dodgers pitchers, uh kersh Glass now
- 53:14Speaker 2: you know Moto, like they're really good when they pitch.
- 53:18Speaker 2: And so I think it just he went so far
- 53:20Speaker 2: against where everybody else was going. There's some other good
- 53:23Speaker 2: picks here, but I really like that when I appreciate
- 53:25Speaker 2: the the going on on the limb when not just
- 53:29Speaker 2: for people saying that he's gonna be good, they're like
- 53:30Speaker 2: that he's gonna be the NL Rookie of the year.
- 53:32Speaker 2: I think he's gonna be a bust. And yeah, like
- 53:36Speaker 2: you can argue with one or the other, but he
- 53:38Speaker 2: definitely wasn't you know it isn't the rookie of the year.
- 53:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, my pick is honestly yours was really good.
- 53:45Speaker 1: With Niko Horner, I think I have to go with
- 53:49Speaker 1: the real Joey Bart with Adlei Ritchman, who was being
- 53:51Speaker 1: drafted as the number one overall catcher and only turned
- 53:54Speaker 1: in eleven dollars of value on our Player Raider when
- 53:57Speaker 1: he's being drafted more in like the twenty twenty five ish,
- 54:01Speaker 1: you know, dollar range, and that was seventh overall on catchers,
- 54:05Speaker 1: and I think part of it is, like it's just
- 54:08Speaker 1: a good call out of like the reason that J. T.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Rail Muto like used to get drafted really high as
- 54:13Speaker 1: a catcher is because he gave you those stolen bases
- 54:15Speaker 1: when no other catcher would. Until there is like another
- 54:19Speaker 1: unicorn like that, I just don't ever see myself kind
- 54:23Speaker 1: of shopping at that upper tier of catchers because they
- 54:26Speaker 1: get banged up and they you just they're very unpredictable.
- 54:30Speaker 1: The range of outcomes can be so wide on them.
- 54:33Speaker 1: And that's what happened to Ruschmand this year. You know,
- 54:35Speaker 1: he hurt himself and played through it, and it's just
- 54:39Speaker 1: a tough spot to be if you're gonna, you know,
- 54:42Speaker 1: invest a really high draft pick on him. He was
- 54:44Speaker 1: going in the NFBC draft data around pick forty six
- 54:49Speaker 1: so well in the third round, like third fourth round.
- 54:52Speaker 1: So that is a hard pill to swallow when you
- 54:56Speaker 1: just kind of got to eat all that rougher production
- 54:58Speaker 1: than when you were expecting.
- 55:00Speaker 2: Well, we'll talk about Retchmond a little bit later in
- 55:02Speaker 2: one of my picks. So I'll hold judgment for now,
- 55:04Speaker 2: because I have a little different outlook on adly than
- 55:08Speaker 2: you do. I not say that you're wrong. I just
- 55:11Speaker 2: think there might be a market opportunity here, gotcha.
- 55:14Speaker 1: Okay, well, let's move on to our infatuation, where again
- 55:18Speaker 1: I think we had two pretty good hits. So infatuations
- 55:21Speaker 1: also a little bit tough to describe, or you know,
- 55:25Speaker 1: mostly I think these are guys that we were acquiring
- 55:29Speaker 1: in most of our teams. Like I ended up with
- 55:31Speaker 1: tons of shares of my guy, and I think you
- 55:33Speaker 1: did too, just because we love the value that they
- 55:36Speaker 1: were giving us in drafts and what they were doing
- 55:38Speaker 1: in the market. So mine was Ezekiel Tovar shortstop for
- 55:41Speaker 1: the Rockies, and yours was the venerable Sonny Gray, who
- 55:44Speaker 1: we never stopped talking about. So I'll give you another
- 55:47Speaker 1: platform to talk about what you loved about Sonny Gray.
- 55:51Speaker 1: And I already know what you're doing with them for
- 55:53Speaker 1: twenty five, but let everybody else know how much you
- 55:55Speaker 1: love them going to twenty five as well.
- 55:57Speaker 2: Yep, love fest for Sonny Gray over here at the
- 56:00Speaker 2: Brewer Households, and it will continue, strikeouts, up, walks, down,
- 56:06Speaker 2: ground balls exactly where we want to see them at
- 56:10Speaker 2: a mid forties clip. You know, there's a little question
- 56:14Speaker 2: to see where he lands next year if the Cardinals
- 56:17Speaker 2: don't hold on to him. But regardless where he's at,
- 56:19Speaker 2: I'm I'm all in. Really, what comes down to is
- 56:23Speaker 2: the market doesn't necessarily believe in Sunny Gray for some reason.
- 56:26Speaker 2: He's not a flashyist. He's not doing everything outside of
- 56:34Speaker 2: you know, like a Lake Snell esque where he just
- 56:38Speaker 2: is dominant for one start and then blows up on another.
- 56:41Speaker 2: It's just Sunny Grage is always really solid, and you
- 56:45Speaker 2: know he actually was a little i'd say unlucky this
- 56:48Speaker 2: year from an ear a perspective. You know, his his
- 56:50Speaker 2: flip was three point one two, his ex fip was
- 56:53Speaker 2: two point eight nine. He had a three point eight
- 56:54Speaker 2: four e ra A. But if you look at the
- 56:57Speaker 2: underlying metrics, like we just talked about Yeam Moto, like
- 56:59Speaker 2: he looks as good, if not better than Yeah Moto
- 57:03Speaker 2: eleven k for nine to walk for nine. Like I
- 57:06Speaker 2: said earlier, the luck metrics a little bit left on
- 57:09Speaker 2: base perspective, but got the ground balls. Actually was a
- 57:13Speaker 2: little unlucky with the home run for five balls. So
- 57:15Speaker 2: like I just meant he's a workhorse. He's gonna keep
- 57:17Speaker 2: doing it, and it is so hard these these days
- 57:20Speaker 2: to find those workhorses. And I know he did. He
- 57:23Speaker 2: only got one hundred and sixty six innings, but he did,
- 57:26Speaker 2: you know, really bring in he got twenty eight games.
- 57:29Speaker 2: He just they showed him down a little early, so
- 57:31Speaker 2: we lost a few starts. So I love Sonny Gray.
- 57:34Speaker 2: I think it's hard to not love Sonny Gray. But
- 57:38Speaker 2: yet it doesn't seem like everybody will so be on
- 57:41Speaker 2: my team's again next year. He is my Jordan Zimmermann
- 57:44Speaker 2: from about a decade back, and I'm gonna ride the
- 57:46Speaker 2: Sunny Gray train as long as it takes.
- 57:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think it's a great call that, Like,
- 57:53Speaker 1: I think people are scared away by that age and
- 57:55Speaker 1: all of them, all of the projections still don't pick
- 58:00Speaker 1: up like those New York Yankees years correctly, I think
- 58:03Speaker 1: when they're projecting him going forward, and that really skews
- 58:07Speaker 1: what I think his projection should be. So there's always
- 58:10Speaker 1: a little bit of arbitrage there to be able to
- 58:13Speaker 1: invest in. Okay, well, I'm gonna talk about my boy,
- 58:16Speaker 1: Ezekiel Tovar because he was a huge hit. He was
- 58:21Speaker 1: going around like round fifteen sixteen in twelve teamers for
- 58:27Speaker 1: an FBC data and came in clocked in with seventeen
- 58:31Speaker 1: dollars of value in our player Raider, which placed him
- 58:33Speaker 1: in the mid sixties, made him like a fifth sixth
- 58:36Speaker 1: round pick. And this kind of goes back to what
- 58:38Speaker 1: I was talking about with like Later Savers and Brenton
- 58:42Speaker 1: Doyle that Tivar is just a superb athlete. He's never
- 58:47Speaker 1: gonna not be playing shortstop for the Rockies as long
- 58:49Speaker 1: as the Rockies have him. So he's playing half of
- 58:52Speaker 1: his games in Couer's field and hitting towards the top
- 58:56Speaker 1: of that lineup. He's also starting to enter this territory
- 58:59Speaker 1: where or a lot of the reason I was into
- 59:01Speaker 1: Tovar before the season is that, like it reminded me
- 59:05Speaker 1: a little bit of like a Yadier Molina path, where
- 59:08Speaker 1: you just play so much and get so many reps
- 59:10Speaker 1: as a baseball player, eventually you've become a slightly better hitter.
- 59:14Speaker 1: And so that happened this year for Tovar. He rounded
- 59:16Speaker 1: into a ninety five WRC plus hitter. It pops mid
- 59:22Speaker 1: twenties homers for you, you know, he popped twenty six
- 59:24Speaker 1: homers put up eighty three runs. It was a fantastic
- 59:27Speaker 1: year and he I think it's just the beginning. He's
- 59:30Speaker 1: only twenty three and will continue just being like a
- 59:34Speaker 1: franchise cornerstone for the Rockies. He is signed with him
- 59:38Speaker 1: through twenty thirty one, is when they have a club
- 59:41Speaker 1: option on him, so I have for fewing they'll pick
- 59:44Speaker 1: that up. So a great target for Dynasty Leagues two
- 59:48Speaker 1: because I will readily admit Tovar has an awful profile
- 59:54Speaker 1: and an awful played approach. He swings at everything. He
- 59:57Speaker 1: strikes out a ton, but he squares the ball up
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: decently and it's a lot like I said, Yadi Molina
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: was exactly like this too, where he's such a guest hitter.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: I think is part of it that, like he's flailing
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: a lot to bar when he's at the plate, but
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: when he gets the hang of it, he does put
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: good contact on it, and so I think it's just
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: going to continue to work. And even though you know
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: those swing percentages are never gonna look good, as long
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: as he says he's in Koor's field and has that
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: just kind of generous outfield to hit towards. I think
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: he's a great pick, and honestly, I would even expect
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: maybe some speed to pop back for Tobar that. I
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: think there's mercedole and basis in this profile, and I
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: think this might be a career high in Homer's But
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: I think twenty is right where you can pencil him
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: in for every year.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with you. Like I was a little
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: surprised to see the power and not the speed this year.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: I thought I was gonna go the way around. But
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: he's he's a to your point, he's a good hitter,
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: I think, like I'm sure it's tough to judge him,
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: but it just seems like he is a good athlete
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: and he's just gonna get the most out of the talent.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: And he came up so young, so young that he's
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: still growing. It's like he's he's in the minor leagues
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: for well with not the most rockies. Maybe he is,
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: but you know, I think there's more more growth to come.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: So I I think you you nailed it on Tovara.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: You've been You've been in on him for a while,
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: and I think that was a A is a great pick.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Well, thank you, So who was your favorite infatuation? Pick
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: out of the writers. Like I said, it's a little
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: hard to judge, but like, who do you think probably
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: paid off the most handsomely out of the infatuation picks.
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: Well, that's that's a hard to your point, it's very hard.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: We had an Otani infatuation pick that one probably paid
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: off the best.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Honestly, that was gonna be my talking point with Blair
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: picking Otani because honestly, like we should have not been
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: taking Otani at the back of the first round, early
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: second round where he was falling some places. In hindsight,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: I can say that, like back in draft season, because
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: I a lot of like what would have pushed me
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: from like third fourth place on teams to first place
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: would have been taking Otani instead of Freeman. Especially. I
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: took a lot of Freeman shares in first rounds because
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: I was thinking, you know, Freddy Freeman is a set
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: and forget it, like three twenty hitter even if I
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: only get like twenty five homers and fifteen stone bases,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: it's solid and like the average is so huge. Otani
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: just like the ceiling was so high and I never
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: should have been doubting him, but I was because of
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: the Tommy John Surgery the new team, and I think
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: he just continually shows that you can throw out all
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: of your preconceived notions of evaluating fantasy baseball players. That
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: Otani is just gonna seemingly blow it out of the
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: water until he I just don't know when he's ever
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: going to prove us wrong, you know.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: Yeah, And so I didn't want to pick Otani here,
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: but I don't know how you don't. And so there's
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: a lot of other interesting picks. But yeah, I think
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: that's the way to go when you're right, Like, go Tani. Man,
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: it's gonna be fun to watch. It's gonna be fun
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: to watch, Like we're just at the beginning here. Uh,
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: And yeah, I who knows what this guy's gonna do.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree. I can tell you that for
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: our comeback player, we will not be picking Blair's comeback player,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: which was Poplo Sandobal. Remember that Deever dream when he
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: was in camp for the Giants in the year.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: Let's just let's just let's kick off the comebacks with
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: that was rough as a group, the ras ball Riders,
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: there's a few okay ones in there, but like I
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: think an average pick might win this time. Around because
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: everybody else else was was quite a bit off, and
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: even a few the comebacks, I'm like, I don't know,
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: like because of where the dirafts were going. We'll get
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: into it a second here once after we talk about ours,
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: I would rather not not talk about mine.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: Yeah, because I'm gonna say this is probably our biggest
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: l's out of all the picks, as my comeback player
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: was Anthony Rizzo and yours was Mitch Hanniger. And I'm
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: not even gonna look it up in the player raider.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: They're probably like so negative, I can't even find it.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: But the seasons were rough, and so what were you
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: drawn two about Mitch Hanniger at the beginning of the
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: season and like, what are you re evaluating now?
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: I was waiting for you go and what heck were
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: you thinking? Yes, this is one of is lean on
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: the edge of the infatuation for me is that Mitch
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: Hanniger has whenever he's played, he's been a good player.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: And I really saw this, like until this year, I
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: really saw this move back to Seattle of like comfort,
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: and he was a little off in San Francisco, just
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: seemed to be hurt, seemed to not do things, And
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: I just saw this come back to Seattle'll be like,
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: let's come home and let's be healthy, and let's just
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: go hit thirty bombs, knocking a one hundred, like, let's
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: just get back to twenty twenty one, Mitch Hanniger. And
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: it couldn't have been further and further from the truth.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: I mean, we were pretty much we were worse than
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: while we were in San Francisco. Granted that the Sale
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: team was pretty pretty really rough at from any perspective
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: in general. So mittch Schanager, love you, use you many times.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: This was an complete l I will have to pass
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: the next time around on Mitchanniger. I think I learned
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: my lesson.
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: Yes, I found it in the player right negative twelve.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: My Anthony Rizzo beat you though negative fourteen. So a
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: lot of it is volume related, though because Rizzo was
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: banged up again this year. I think what I have
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: learned is especially looking in these comebacks, do not count
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: on mid thirty year olds. For these comebacks that like,
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: try to find somebody with more of like you know,
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: sordid injury history, or you know, an injury that is
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: not necessarily like a recurring one or soft tissue one
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: maybe and try to go that route or like a
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: new landing spot, because I mean, I guess you went
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: with that a little bit with Hanniger trying to move
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: on from San Francisco to Seattle and trying to rekindle
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: what he had found previously there. But with Rizzo is
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: kind of like a retread of last year. And I
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: was hoping that the concussion symptoms he suffered last year
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: would dissipate. But both of us, Yeah, Hanniger was it's
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: this thirty three, age thirty three season that he went through.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: Rizzo is his age thirty four. So I think especially
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: that's my learning lesson going into this for next year
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: is like, do not count on those types of you know,
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: early to mid thirty year olds to find something new
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: unless there is like a specific piece of news I
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: can point to and or like a specific change in
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: their approach or a team change, something that is really
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: driving that that isn't just like, oh, I think he's
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: you know, he's thirty four and he was banged up
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: last year. I think he'll come back because it just
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: doesn't seem to happen. And I think that kind of
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: showed through our staff picks as well.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, And you know, as I look at the
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: staff picks, like there's a decent number of O'Neil Cruz,
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: and I'm not going to give the folks the win
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: on that one because Cruz, even though like yeah he
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: was hurt, like the helium he had, like almost discounted
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: that for me. Like to me, like it's this is
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: like the discussion, is the MVP the best hitter, the
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: one that helps the most, right, Like CRUs clearly had
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: a good comeback year. He is a twenty twenty guy. Like,
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: but from a fantasy perspective, you kind of were pricing
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: that in And so you know, for me going through
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: the list again, we're taking like the best pick. Here's
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: an average pick. I'm giving this to Keelan with any
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: pas I know. Yeah, I'm a vinny guy. Loved the
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: guy and you know he did he was hurt some
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: this year, but when he played, he was exactly what
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: you expected. If he could have had a full season,
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: he we'd be talking about him much more than we
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: have been. So I really like Kielyn's pick there. I
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: wouldn't be surprised if Kielan went there again next year
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: because you can still argue because some of the injuries
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: that Vinnie had that he could make a bigger comeback
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: next year. I'll probably throw more than sleeper category. But
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: that's that's not totally out of balance. But I don't know,
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: the pickings are thin. Where are you going on this one?
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's a great call. The other person
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: I was considering was cool with with the Tyler O'Neal pick.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: I think both of them are a little bit more
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: into what I was trying to say of like, that's
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: the route I think to go for your comeback players,
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: or to like count on comebacks from our guys who
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: have been integered. Although I mean I was scared of
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: Tyro O'Neal and his hammis and even those acted up
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: a little bit this year. But change of scenery, better ballpark, Vinnie,
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: you know, coming back from that shoulder injury again scary,
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: but you know, who knows how long he was he
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: was battling that again, great ballpark, great team kind of
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: coming up around him. That Like, that's I think why
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: those two picks worked out really well.
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think you're right. So we need
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: to reevaluate our comeback player of the Euro criteria going
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: into next year. Yes, we'll make a comeback on the comeback.
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: Yeah, pick ourselves. Yes, Okay. For most Valuable Fantasy Pitcher,
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: you ended up having Hunter Brown, which I think is
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: a big w that especially if you kind of toss
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: out that beginning of the season, which I know you
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: can say that with like a lot of players like, oh,
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: just toss out this bad stretch. But he did make
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: a demonstrative change and was just electric down the stretch.
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: Great pick, And for me, I had Sean Manayah, so
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: I think that's also a win in terms of where
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: you were drafting Sean Manya coming into the season and
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: had one of the best second halves of any pitcher
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: in the league. So I'll let you kick it off.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: What did you like about Hunter Brown coming into the
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: season and like what types of pieces are you going
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: to carry from that going forward?
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean coming to the season under Brown, like
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: he he ticked all the boxes that I look for,
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: And I mean it's it's that profile. It's a decent control,
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: you know, gets a kper per inning and has a
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: high ground ball rate, Like that's that's the guy I
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: look for. And then also he actually had some pretty
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: significant velocity, and his stuff looked like if you'd looked
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: at some of the comps and the stuff, it was
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: really really strong, like we were talking like Verlanders, you know,
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: Sureser type like comps, like he he was just standing
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: out like no other when you started to look at
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: kind of his profile in the actual pitch mix that
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: he had and to your point, like he came out
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: of the gate real rough, real rough. He had a
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: few few bad games, but from May first on, like
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: you said, like I'm stretched like it was, it was
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: just like get rid of really April. And from May
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: first on he had one hundred and forty seven eights
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: on eleven and five with a two fifty one ear,
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: a one hundred and fifty five strikeouts, and one hundred
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: and forty seven Indians and he was just dominant. It
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: was just absolutely dominant. And he carried that literally all
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: the way through to the end of the season. He
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: just got stronger and stronger and stronger. You know, it's
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: that that's a profile that is exciting. And you know,
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: if you actually looked at the very end the season,
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: the last two months he had a two seventeen ERA.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: The last two months of the season, like he he
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: just kept getting stronger. So I think Hunter Brown like
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: he's gonna get a lot of healing in this off season.
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: But I think it's absolutely deserved. And so yeah, to
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: your point, it's hard to just count out a few
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: pieces of the puzzle, but I'm taking Hunter brown victory
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: lap right now, and I'm I'm very, very very proud
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: of that.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: Yeah. So he ended up clocking in at eight dollars
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: of value in our Player Raider. But like you said,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: if you threw out that that April a little bit
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: and he were able to acquire him after that, or
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: you know, throw him in all of those bad starts
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: when he wasn't looking great, it paid off handsomely. So yeah,
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: I think that's a kind of a good sort of
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: profile to look for going forward. Yeah.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: I mean I also drafted him, then drafted him, then
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: required him. So I had two versions of Hunter Brown.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: I was right on one, wrong on the other.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: Here go okay, So Sean and I ended up clocking
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: at sixteen point four dollars of value in our Player
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: Raider wedge right between Mookie Bets and Matt Olson, just
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: like everybody predicted. So he was fantastic down the stretch,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: and like, yeah, was great for you and Whip era
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: wins K's and was just a fantasy ace honestly for
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: some teams out there, made for a great fantasy two
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: or three. And what I really loved about him coming
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: into the season was obviously he had a lot of
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: like great stuff metrics and just good pitching comps the
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: way that like you talked about with Hunter Brown. But
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: when I all like, we're just a few of like
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: the other factors that I look for when I'm shopping
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: for pitchers kind of in those middle tiers that I
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: think can make the jump to number twos, and that
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: is team and park. So the Mets great team, you know,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: lots of games that they won, obviously made the playoffs
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: that they were always projected to be somewhere around like
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: a load to mid eighties wins team. So you knew,
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: Manya could also go that length. You know, I wasn't
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: trying to count on some kind of up and coming
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: young player who would only you know, like a Garrett
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: Crochet or something where you knew that just like there
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: wasn't enough innings in the profile to be able to
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: get through an entire season and to get deep into
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: games four wins. Great home park City Field, like you can't.
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: It's one of the better home parks out there. So
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: that was like another kind of tick in terms of
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: like what I was looking for in the profile. And
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: then lastly going into a contract year. So this doesn't
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: always work because like I took a decent amount of
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: labor tourist chairs for the same reason, where like I think,
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: especially like in New York, so those types of players, like,
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: really it can go one way or the other, as
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: we've seen with Juan Soto and Sean and I hear
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: that going into a walk ear you could just Manaia
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: also struck me traditionally as just this player that like
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: does show up for bigger moments. And I think he
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: really rose to the occasion as he knew that he
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: was going to be able to have a great platform
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: year or have a platform here where he could really
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: leverage it if he did a great thing. And yeah,
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: I mean it paid off handsomely wherever I had him
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: that like he was pretty much free in twelve teamers
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: that like you know, going for a few bucks at
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: the end of drafts or being able to round out
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: a rotation that's kind of the hallmarks or like the
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: things that I'm looking for in profiles as I get
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: into draft season.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: Yeah, and I you know, as we look through the picture,
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: I'm going to give you the victory lap on this one.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: I liked him when I pick, almost better than anybody else's.
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: And part of it is like I had identified Manaia
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: in the off season. He's a drive line guy. He
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: told a lot of things that you called out, like
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: there's a lot of things there, and like it just
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: seems like every draft I was in, like I just
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: left the draft of the draft without him, like nobody
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: picked him. And I was just like on the last pick,
- 1:15:17Speaker 2: like do I grab him? Do I not? And then
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: I just didn't. And so now I'm kicking myself for
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: that and giving you the victory lap on this one.
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: And so I think it's a great pick because your point,
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: like there's other guys on here that pitched better than Manaia,
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: that were probably more valuable than actually probably you know,
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: maybe drove some guys to championships and things like that
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: like that, but Manaiah was absolutely free and he was
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: to your point, he's like a number three plug and
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: play real with what you got out of him and
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: the innings were there. I do question if he can
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: maintain that in the future, Like the innings piece for
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: me is a question for him. But man, you nailed
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: that one, and I'm giving you the victory lap.
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: Yeah baby, Yeah, I mean he was going three hundred
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: and thirtieth in FBC drafts, so he was not going Yeah.
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: So I won't be getting him at that price going
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: into next year, that's for sure. Okay, Well, let's move
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: on to our most valuable fantasy hitter where uh you did?
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: All right?
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: I mean I.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: No, no, no, It's.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: Impossible for me to say anything bad about my boy
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: Tommy Fam, who was your pick, but I think it
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: was good. Well, you also picked him before he had
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: a job, so that is a factor here is that,
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: like you, he was not signed at during spring training
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: when we made these picks, so you were kind of
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: counting on him signing somewhere. And I think it's I
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: can't quite slice and dice the player raider to like
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: see from like when Tommy Fam signed, but when he
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: signed ever since then, he probably provided positive ish value,
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: especially over stretches where he was playing that like it
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: was a little up and down with his three teams.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: But I think it I don't know if what I'm
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: saying is, I don't know if you necessarily have like
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: a ton of reevaluation to do that, Like it's just
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: a weird sequence of events. Mine, Oh, go ahead, good. Yeah.
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: It was like I looked at Tommy fam as like
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: a fifteen to fifteen bat that was free, and then
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: the fact that he did not sign until like mid April.
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: I just I was shocked at that. And to your point,
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: then he just bounced around team after team, Like it's
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: just like he had like four seasons somehow, like three teams,
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: and like he took the beginning of the season off
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: like and that really I think kind of hurt. But
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: he was still like guy who just randomly would pick
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: up and plug and play, and he was the best
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: bench option you had. Now, I was hoping for a
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: little bit more than that. But yeah, at the end
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: of the day, like, I'm not too disappointed that he's
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: probably not the most valuable fantasy hitter, but there's still
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: something to be said for having value for nothing at
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: the draft table.
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, I totally agree. Mine was Sean Murphy, which
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: blew up on literally day one when he tore that
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: oblique on opening day, it was gone. So that was
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: just I think if we're going to go back to
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: like learning lessons with Adlie Richman, certainly will not be
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: picking like a catcher for this type of category again
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: because again it's fluky. Not only do they get banged
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: up you know, catching, but then you have all the
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: other standard issues when you're in the batter's box. Especially
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: for the Atlanta Braves, You're you're bound to break a
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: wrist or a foot or tear and oblique because that's
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: the way that their season went. But so I think
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: that's maybe like my takeaway, especially as we get into
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: twenty twenty five, catchers have it is a stronger class,
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: which also I think makes it that like the importance
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: of like getting a catcher just isn't there for me,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: and going to twenty twenty five that like, I think
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: there's plenty of young catchers, there's plenty of old catchers
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: that have power, like my boy Kyle Goshioka that are
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: still hanging around the league. That the floor I think
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: is higher for the catchers in Fantasy than that has
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: been traditionally, but the ceiling is lower as well because
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: we don't necessarily have like an upperish tier option currently,
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: especially as long as Adlie Rushman's playing with Mount Waltimore
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: down there. So what do you think?
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it's I kind of lude to this Earlier we
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: were talking about Adute, Like, I think their Adli Rushman
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: has a Jill Moller season in him here here or
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: there where He's just gonna hit you know, crazy average.
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: He's gonna hit thirty bombs and everybody's looking me like,
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: why didn't I see this coming? Like, he has so
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: much talent to your point, hitting them Baltimore that field,
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: the way they've redesigned it is really really hurt. But
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: I do think that we will see that. But otherwise,
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: like so I'm only taking that if it's priced in
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: which I think Adley like we come them back to
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: the pack. As far as uh actually being interesting to
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: buy where before he was it was, it was a
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: tough call. So but overall, yeah, I'm generally kind of
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: waiting to the second tier catchers, even towards the back twelve. Uh.
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: You know, I think there's probably a lot of value
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: in like two two catcher leagues taking the back back
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: to the first tier beginning of the second tier, you'll
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: probably getting two guys that are just gonna be up
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: and coming. There's just a lot of guys in that
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: middle middle layer that you can be absolutely happy, happy
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: with to your point from a floor perspective, and somebody's
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: gonna gonna go off and you don't.
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: Know who it is. Yeah, And I think, especially when
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: we're getting into next year, the like young catchers coming
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: into their own, there's gonna be a lot of them
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: between like uh, Gabrielle Moreno Caper Ruis obviously like Janier
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: Diez will be at the more upper end of that
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: catcher pool. Logan O'HAPPI will be around. So like there's
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: a lot of developing is starting to come through the
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: league that like, I think you can play at the
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: back of the back end of that pool and not
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: get burned too bad. But for the staff picks of
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: most Valuable Fantasy Hitter, who do you think was the best?
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm going to go here with I got the
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: player name, I got a look who picked, Okay, it
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: was it was Rudy. I'm gonna go with Anthony Santander
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: from Rudy, I think that was it was a great pick.
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: You know, probably one of the most unappreciated players in
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: the Baltimore system here, Santander had just an outstanding year. Yeah,
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: the average left a little bit desired, but I think
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: there's more in the tank there. But this is a
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: guy that hit forty four homers, scored ninety one runs,
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: and knocked in one hundred and two. Yeah, he stole
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: two bases, but you know he I don't think people
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: saw that coming from him, even though the talent's been there,
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: but a lot of folks were like discounting because of
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: the Baltimore changes there. So I love this pick. I
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: think he was absolutely much more about than anybody expected.
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: And you look across the board of whatever else was picking,
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: and like we just didn't really seem to click, and
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: Santander to me, just kind of jumps out as a
- 1:22:10Speaker 2: guy that had a great season on probably was still
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: undappreciated for what he did.
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and if you look at the NFBC data, his
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: average draft spot was one thirty three, so you know,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: like tenth to twelfth round somewhere in there. But on
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: our Player Raider he was twenty fourth, so returned second
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: round value for you. So that's a huge jump. I
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: think that's a great call. There's also some other great
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: picks here in here. Blair went with Kittel Marte, who
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: was you know, drafted right around pick one hundred and
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: ended up returning you value that gave you. Sorry, I'm
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: doing this on the fly, and he gave you seventeenth overall,
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: just ahead of Santander, so again second round value there.
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: So that's pretty big pickup. A couple of people also
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: picked vlad Garo Junior, which wasn't quite as significant, like
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: of a jump. He was being picked more you know,
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: fourthish round, I want to say, like fourth, fifth sometimes,
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: although you know, some people were kind of popping him
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: in the third as well, and ended up returning great
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: value for you, was fourteenth overall in our Player Raider
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: at thirty three dollars. So I think that kind of
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: spoke to if you had especially made him your second
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: overall like bat and you had paired him like with
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: an Ellie or an Otani, like you're probably out there
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: spending your Fantasy Baseball Championship bucks right now that like
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: he certainly that's the type of pick where if you're
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: in like the third or fourth round, that you really
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: dream of what Vladimir Gero did for you this year.
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, he he was phenomenal, especially in that second half.
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: He he carried some teams championships, that's for sure.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: Yeah, and I should call out that was a Healan
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: made that one. So yeah, she had pretty good uh
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: stretch in here. I won't mention her sleeper and Kelder
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: also picked flag Garo Junior. So yeah, lots of lots
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: of great insights. I will link to all that in
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: the show notes, like I have said, and so certainly
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: I think it's a it's a great piece, So check
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: it out when we when we post it next March,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: because you know, now I'm gonna overthink this way too
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: much and we're just gonna like it's just gonna be
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: like brutal coming in the next year, because this is
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: certainly way more fun when it's like seventy five percent hits.
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: The good news is Islands, we think five or six
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: picks next year because we all know something gree is
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: my infatuation again next year, So I've got a head
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: start on you. What's holding you back? You?
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: Yeah, that defines infatuation right there, Like if it if
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: it's just the same player, they just copy and paste it.
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: It's perfect.
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: I think I picked him like two years ago now.
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: I think that'd be a third year in a row.
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: If I can pray again, just.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: Keep rolling with it. I support that. Okay, Well, we're
