- 1:01Speaker 1: quarterback Brad Johnson. We get to talk about his time
- 1:04Speaker 1: with the team, his Super Bowl, his new second career
- 1:08Speaker 1: as trick shot extraordinaire and pop a shot. almost champion.
- 1:14Speaker 1: It's a really fun interview. We think you guys are

- 1:32Speaker 1: to another episode of the Vikings tailgate brought to you
- 1:36Speaker 1: by Ticketmaster, the official ticket marketplace of the Minnesota Vikings.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I'm your host, Cy Amundsen, joined by the one and
- 1:45Speaker 1: only Chad Daniels. We've got an amazing guest coming. But Chad,
- 1:51Speaker 1: before we get to our guest, before we get to Tampa, again,
- 1:56Speaker 1: I don't need to look back a lot. I know
- 1:57Speaker 1: this is a look forward show, but can we take
- 2:00Speaker 1: a minute to celebrate the 2-0 thing?
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yes, let's enjoy looking back for a second. Let's enjoy
- 2:06Speaker 2: looking back at all of the Instagram posts and the
- 2:09Speaker 2: tweets that had the Bears crushing the Vikings and how
- 2:12Speaker 2: poorly they aged and how many of them I commented
- 2:16Speaker 2: on after the game, so I'd be safe. Man, what
- 2:21Speaker 2: a game in the rain. Coached? I thought so well
- 2:27Speaker 2: on both sides.
- 2:28Speaker 1: One of those games that if it would have happened
- 2:29Speaker 1: at US Bank Stadium and you win 9-3, you go, well,
- 2:32Speaker 1: that was the worst football game I've ever watched. But
- 2:34Speaker 1: it felt like a masterpiece in the rain. And I
- 2:38Speaker 1: think I was telling this to somebody the other day
- 2:42Speaker 1: because there's some people nitpicking and I'm one of those people.
- 2:45Speaker 1: I'll nitpick a bit. But if you'd have told Viking
- 2:48Speaker 1: fans before the season started, like, hey, you're going to
- 2:52Speaker 1: go 2-0. It's going to be against the Bears and
- 2:54Speaker 1: the Packers to start. A week after the Bears score 59,
- 2:58Speaker 1: you're going to hold them to three. Oh, by the way,
- 3:00Speaker 1: you're going to do it all without the starting quarterback
- 3:03Speaker 1: that you went through this whole mess with all offseason. Oh,
- 3:05Speaker 1: by the way, in a rain game, you won't have
- 3:08Speaker 1: Jordan Mason and Juwan Jennings, your best pass blocking wide receiver.
- 3:14Speaker 1: And oh, by the way, Harrison Smith will be back,
- 3:16Speaker 1: but it's limited snaps. You'd have gone, well, I'll take that.
- 3:20Speaker 1: How much do I have to pay you? That's Tell
- 3:22Speaker 1: the genie, yes, that's the wish. That's the football wish
- 3:26Speaker 1: I want. And it sets you up for this really cool,
- 3:30Speaker 1: you know, the team, you know, players, coaches, they're not
- 3:33Speaker 1: looking forward, but we're idiots. We can look forward.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yes, why wouldn't we?
- 3:38Speaker 1: We got to look forward. Listen to me. We got
- 3:41Speaker 1: a little Florida run here with a Tampa and then
- 3:44Speaker 1: a Miami coming to us. And then we stay Southern
- 3:48Speaker 1: hot and we go to New Orleans. New Orleans looks good,
- 3:50Speaker 1: but you're now in this universe where a really, really
- 3:55Speaker 1: good start is possible going into the bye. And can
- 3:59Speaker 1: I tell the people something about us, Chad? I hope
- 4:01Speaker 1: you do. If this team is 4-1 going into the bye,
- 4:04Speaker 1: heaven forbid 5-0. These fellas right here are going to
- 4:09Speaker 1: be real insufferable.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it's going to be tough to listen to this
- 4:12Speaker 2: because we will be just looking back quite a bit
- 4:15Speaker 2: and talking about the 5-0 start. But I am excited
- 4:18Speaker 2: about this game we have coming up.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Can I ask you a non-game? Because we have an
- 4:22Speaker 1: awesome guest who is relevant to this matchup. Yeah. But
- 4:27Speaker 1: before we do that, Tampa as a city, I've performed there.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I've spent a lot of time there. It gets made
- 4:34Speaker 1: fun of a lot. I know it's the goth capital
- 4:37Speaker 1: of the world, which is very funny to me. I've
- 4:39Speaker 1: seen them on the streets. I've seen the goths. Love it.
- 4:43Speaker 1: But I'm a huge Tampa guy. I like the whole area. Tampa, St. Pete, Clearwater.
- 4:49Speaker 1: I am one of the few people who thinks Tampa rules.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Clearwater is down where Dolphin Tail was, right?
- 4:56Speaker 2: That dolphin that didn't have the tail and you could
- 4:58Speaker 2: buy the stuffed animal dolphin with the fake tail and
- 5:01Speaker 2: all that stuff. I've been there with my kids, but also.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Never heard of it. You're a thousand years old.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I brought my daughter when she was older. And we
- 5:08Speaker 2: had a rain game at the Tampa Zoo. No one
- 5:11Speaker 2: was there. So we got to sneak into all these
- 5:15Speaker 2: exhibits we weren't supposed to be into. And we got
- 5:17Speaker 2: on top of this makeshift deck. And we got to
- 5:21Speaker 2: just pet giraffes. They came over. And then at one point,
- 5:25Speaker 2: I thought a giraffe was going to eat my daughter
- 5:27Speaker 2: because their tongues are so long and gross. And it
- 5:29Speaker 2: wrapped around the back of my daughter's. It was really disgusting.
- 5:31Speaker 2: But I've always had a great time in Tampa.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Yeah, it's, uh, there's one of my favorite things that
- 5:37Speaker 1: nobody knows is there is a, uh, there is a
- 5:41Speaker 1: park in Tampa. It's 0.14 acres large. And it is
- 5:47Speaker 1: owned by anyone, Chad, anyone, the Cuban government. Yeah. So back,
- 5:54Speaker 1: back before Fidel and you can go visit this park
- 5:57Speaker 1: back before Fidel, there was an artist, a Cuban artist
- 6:00Speaker 1: who came and he would stay at this property and
- 6:03Speaker 1: It was one of his favorite people to stay with.
- 6:05Speaker 1: And he was like, you know, one of the people
- 6:06Speaker 1: who was really in the Cuban liberation process. Anyway, the
- 6:11Speaker 1: house then after that person who owned that died, the
- 6:14Speaker 1: house changed a few people's hands. And then in the 50s,
- 6:16Speaker 1: like I think 56, the people who owned the property
- 6:20Speaker 1: knew the history. And so they decided as a gesture
- 6:23Speaker 1: of goodwill, they would give the deed to the Cuban government.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And then three years later, Fidel Castro came into power.
- 6:35Speaker 1: And then and then it wasn't really like people knew
- 6:40Speaker 1: about it, but it wasn't really found. They found out
- 6:44Speaker 1: what was going on. And in 2021, a Tampa Bay
- 6:47Speaker 1: City Council meeting, there was a councilman who had to
- 6:50Speaker 1: like they were going back and forth about the issue.
- 6:52Speaker 1: And he directly had to ask a city administrator. He's
- 6:55Speaker 1: like the park itself. the land, because it was turned
- 6:59Speaker 1: into a park when Cuba started to own it. He goes,
- 7:02Speaker 1: is it ours or is it Cuba's? And the city
- 7:06Speaker 1: administrator had to answer, it's not the city of Tampa's.
- 7:09Speaker 1: It does belong to the Republic of Cuba. Technically a
- 7:14Speaker 1: frozen asset, but I'm saying I have... I know it's
- 7:18Speaker 1: last minute, but I think there's a world where we
- 7:20Speaker 1: should consider going to Tampa because how many away Viking
- 7:26Speaker 1: games are we going to get to go to where
- 7:27Speaker 1: we can also visit Cuba?
- 7:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that's pretty cool. And that's probably why they have
- 7:31Speaker 2: to beep out Bay of Pigs invasion on Billy Joel's
- 7:34Speaker 2: We Didn't Start the Fire in the City of Tampa
- 7:36Speaker 2: on the radio.
- 7:37Speaker 1: It's going to be a fun matchup. We're both really
- 7:39Speaker 1: looking forward to it. And as... A little treat to
- 7:44Speaker 1: get everybody up and excited for the matchup. The tailgate
- 7:49Speaker 1: has a pretty fun hangout here. I think it'd be,
- 7:52Speaker 1: you know, Tony Dungy is the one other name that
- 7:55Speaker 1: lands on this level. But the main guy who kind
- 7:59Speaker 1: of crosses both universes, former Vikings quarterback, former Tampa Bay
- 8:05Speaker 1: Buccaneers quarterback, former Super Bowl champion and current elite level
- 8:13Speaker 1: trick shot social media guy. Yes. Ladies and gentlemen, we
- 8:17Speaker 1: are now lucky to be joined by former Vikings quarterback,
- 8:21Speaker 1: former Buccaneers quarterback, Super Bowl champion, the great Brad Johnson. Brad,
- 8:26Speaker 1: thanks for joining us. Yeah, man.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I appreciate you having me. Thank you. It brings back
- 8:29Speaker 3: a lot of memories. Good to put back on the
- 8:31Speaker 3: purple and thank you for having me.
- 8:33Speaker 1: You know, back in the day, back when you were
- 8:34Speaker 1: on both teams, this was, this was a twice a
- 8:37Speaker 1: year matchup and now it comes around really rarely. So
- 8:41Speaker 1: it's got to only be every so often that all
- 8:43Speaker 1: your history collides into one week.
- 8:45Speaker 3: But if you play for enough teams, sometimes you get
- 8:47Speaker 3: a little bit of history everywhere. I get a lot
- 8:49Speaker 3: of good, a lot of bad sometimes, but no, it's really,
- 8:52Speaker 3: it's really unique. You know, you know, back when I
- 8:54Speaker 3: was playing, it was obviously Minnesota Packers and, Detroit, Chicago,
- 9:00Speaker 3: and Tampa. There's really five in that division. And so
- 9:04Speaker 3: the divisions changed. But you always knew when we were playing,
- 9:08Speaker 3: you know, Tony Dungy, he was actually our coordinator at
- 9:11Speaker 3: one time. I got to play for Tony for three
- 9:13Speaker 3: years in Minnesota, defense coordinator. And then when he went
- 9:16Speaker 3: to Tampa, that really became a rivalry. And we always
- 9:20Speaker 3: got to play some great Buccaneer games. And now we
- 9:23Speaker 3: kind of get to relive history of, you know, back.
- 9:25Speaker 1: In the day. Yeah, Dungy, I believe when he went
- 9:28Speaker 1: to Tampa, his first ever divisional win was against the Vikings.
- 9:32Speaker 1: And then there's just this like insane storied history there.
- 9:36Speaker 1: You know, you're with us in 98 and you have
- 9:39Speaker 1: that great game to start the season. And then he's
- 9:41Speaker 1: the only coach to beat us. And then you go
- 9:44Speaker 1: there and win a Super Bowl. It's just what an
- 9:47Speaker 1: interesting story. stretch of time. The one thing I don't
- 9:50Speaker 1: think most Viking fans know, and I don't even know
- 9:52Speaker 1: if he was there when you would have been there,
- 9:53Speaker 1: but everybody knows Dungy and Monty Kiffin went there. But
- 9:57Speaker 1: am I crazy? Wasn't Les Steckle the offensive coordinator for
- 10:01Speaker 1: a while in Tampa?
- 10:03Speaker 3: He was. I did not play for Les. But he
- 10:06Speaker 3: was actually both places also. So it's a small fraternity
- 10:11Speaker 3: in the NFL. A lot of teams, a lot of
- 10:12Speaker 3: guys trading places, those kind of things.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Is there a system you were most comfortable in? And
- 10:17Speaker 2: if so, tell us about that.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Well, I love the system that I was in in
- 10:21Speaker 3: Minnesota originally. Denny Green's first year. Jack Burns was the
- 10:26Speaker 3: offensive coordinator. He was actually the one that drafted me.
- 10:29Speaker 3: A big part of me getting drafted. Denny Green wanted
- 10:32Speaker 3: a system coming from Joe Gibbs. The Washington Redskins at
- 10:36Speaker 3: that time, they were the team. They just won a
- 10:38Speaker 3: Super Bowl. And so Jack Burns brought in that system.
- 10:41Speaker 3: He was our coordinator for a year and a half
- 10:43Speaker 3: or so. And then Brian Billick took over and I
- 10:46Speaker 3: think just the verbiage of the system, the names of
- 10:48Speaker 3: the plays, the formations, the way you call the motions,
- 10:52Speaker 3: the shifts, the formations, the snap count. I still could
- 10:57Speaker 3: call it to this day. If I were teaching a
- 10:59Speaker 3: fourth grade team, that's how I would call it. So,
- 11:03Speaker 3: you know, a play in that system might be dot right,
- 11:06Speaker 3: hand right, X, deep over where, you know, West Coast
- 11:09Speaker 3: system using green and red and orange and, F means Z.
- 11:13Speaker 3: It's kind of funky in the West Coast system. So
- 11:16Speaker 3: I think if I were teaching a system, it was
- 11:18Speaker 3: that system I was in originally in Minnesota. It had
- 11:22Speaker 3: the short passing game, had the deep shots, but had
- 11:25Speaker 3: a great running game with it too. And we obviously
- 11:27Speaker 3: had a lot of success in it. So I was
- 11:30Speaker 3: able to play for like five or six different coordinators,
- 11:33Speaker 3: great coaches, but enjoyed my time. It really comes down
- 11:38Speaker 3: to people, coaches being great teachers of the game, players responding,
- 11:45Speaker 3: having great talent around you, and then everyone playing together
- 11:47Speaker 3: and then being able to win in clubs and then
- 11:49Speaker 3: hopefully having, you know, being able to win, you know,
- 11:52Speaker 3: division championships and hopefully try to get to that Super
- 11:55Speaker 3: Bowl level.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Everybody knows when you left the Vikings, you went to Tampa,
- 11:58Speaker 1: but I don't know that everybody knows that Billick chased
- 12:01Speaker 1: you pretty hard. And what was it like to make that?
- 12:04Speaker 1: Because you've got a former coach that you knew how
- 12:06Speaker 1: he worked in Tony and, you know, you'd seen what
- 12:09Speaker 1: Billick was able to do. what was that like and
- 12:13Speaker 1: how hard of a decision was that?
- 12:14Speaker 3: Well, when I was in Minnesota, I was in Minnesota
- 12:16Speaker 3: for seven years at the beginning of my career. And
- 12:19Speaker 3: Brian and I had been together for seven years. A
- 12:22Speaker 3: great relationship. And then after that 15-1 year, he went
- 12:27Speaker 3: to Baltimore to trade for me then. And the trade numbers,
- 12:32Speaker 3: just the way what they were having to give up,
- 12:34Speaker 3: they just couldn't do it at Baltimore and Washington gave
- 12:36Speaker 3: it up. I spent two years in Washington.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right.
- 12:40Speaker 3: I was trying to go to Baltimore and be their
- 12:42Speaker 3: quarterback in free agency. And the contrast got really weird.
- 12:48Speaker 3: I wanted to go play for Brian. Brian wanted me.
- 12:50Speaker 3: It would have been a great fit. They'd actually just
- 12:53Speaker 3: won the Super Bowl the year before. But the numbers
- 12:57Speaker 3: didn't match the contract. What I wanted and what they wanted,
- 13:00Speaker 3: it was just off, just a little bit. And so
- 13:02Speaker 3: I felt like I had to make the right decision.
- 13:04Speaker 3: So I chose to go to Tampa. And when I
- 13:06Speaker 3: did that, Tampa, they obviously had a great, great team,
- 13:09Speaker 3: a great nucleus of players. But also, for me, it
- 13:12Speaker 3: was a place that had never won the Super Bowl.
- 13:14Speaker 3: And my goal was to be the first quarterback to
- 13:16Speaker 3: have won it for that franchise, which ended up happening.
- 13:19Speaker 3: And I also had familiarity with Tony Dungy because it
- 13:23Speaker 3: was really unique with Tony because he ran the scout.
- 13:26Speaker 3: As a defense coordinator, he actually ran the scout team cards.
- 13:30Speaker 3: So I was actually backing up. At that time, I
- 13:32Speaker 3: was backing up Rich Gannon and Jim McMahon and Warren
- 13:35Speaker 3: Moon and But I was always in the huddle with
- 13:37Speaker 3: Tony Dungy. So we kind of actually had a rapport,
- 13:40Speaker 3: even though I was a backup. I wasn't starting games
- 13:42Speaker 3: there in Minnesota at that time. But we had a
- 13:44Speaker 3: working relationship. And then I got to play against Tony
- 13:47Speaker 3: a couple times before we made that move. And then
- 13:48Speaker 3: I went to him as well in 2001 when I
- 13:51Speaker 3: went to Tampa.
- 13:53Speaker 2: We've been talking about some coaches that you've seen in
- 13:55Speaker 2: your travels. But in the Super Bowl, in the Super
- 13:58Speaker 2: Bowl 37, you actually played against Rich Gannon, who you
- 14:01Speaker 2: had been in the quarterback room with here in Minnesota.
- 14:03Speaker 2: I mean, what kind of feeling was that?
- 14:05Speaker 3: Rich and I have very similar careers, to be honest
- 14:08Speaker 3: with you. He came from Delaware, blue hands. He was
- 14:11Speaker 3: running a wing tee offense. I think a lot of teams,
- 14:13Speaker 3: they want him as a free safety, not a quarterback.
- 14:15Speaker 3: And then I thought he got off the first year
- 14:17Speaker 3: in 1992. I was like, man, this guy's a great leader.
- 14:20Speaker 3: He's full of grit, tough. And then they made a
- 14:25Speaker 3: change in Minnesota. He went to Washington. And then he
- 14:28Speaker 3: had some throwing shoulder problem. And then he actually came
- 14:31Speaker 3: back to Eden Prairie and was just throwing had a
- 14:33Speaker 3: bag of balls thrown to equipment manager over there at
- 14:36Speaker 3: Eden Prairie high school. I mean, he's out of football.
- 14:38Speaker 3: His story is incredible. And then he gets a chance
- 14:41Speaker 3: to go back to Kansas city and lights it up.
- 14:43Speaker 3: And they, something weird happens. They want to help us
- 14:45Speaker 3: go back. And then he goes to Oakland and hooks
- 14:47Speaker 3: up my buddy, John Gruden. Incredible. But you know, I
- 14:52Speaker 3: just had so much respect for Rich and just his career.
- 14:55Speaker 3: And then we got to play, obviously play the Superbowl and,
- 14:58Speaker 3: and he was the MVP of the, of the NFL
- 15:00Speaker 3: that year, just lit it up. And, uh, Fortunately for
- 15:04Speaker 3: that day, we had the better day and we won.
- 15:07Speaker 3: But just so much respect for Rich and so many
- 15:10Speaker 3: great players, so many great teams. He got the lead
- 15:12Speaker 3: just watching his career. But our numbers are very similar.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Our careers are very similar. And just all the respect
- 15:19Speaker 3: in the world for him.
- 15:20Speaker 1: You know, they are similar. But I will say, you
- 15:23Speaker 1: have kind of a unicorn career. You have this amazing
- 15:27Speaker 1: thing where the only other guy that I can think,
- 15:29Speaker 1: and it's very different, Fran Tarkenton. Starts with the Vikings,
- 15:33Speaker 1: goes to the Giants, comes back to the Vikings. You
- 15:35Speaker 1: didn't just start with a franchise and come back to
- 15:38Speaker 1: a franchise, which is pretty rare. Like kind of the
- 15:41Speaker 1: the poetry of it, the story of it, where ninth
- 15:46Speaker 1: round pick built all the way up to 98, have
- 15:49Speaker 1: the unfortunate injury. That team goes 15 and one. You know,
- 15:53Speaker 1: you kind of have to have a backseat there. Then
- 15:56Speaker 1: you leave, actually win a Super Bowl, which that team didn't.
- 16:00Speaker 1: The guy, the trade, if I'm not mistaken, the pick
- 16:05Speaker 1: they got from Washington, I think is Dante Culpepper. And
- 16:09Speaker 1: then he hurts his knee and you come back to
- 16:11Speaker 1: replace him and have another run with the team. It's
- 16:15Speaker 1: one of the most amazing. And I think it probably
- 16:18Speaker 1: also speaks to you and the organizations you were part of. Like, that's.
- 16:22Speaker 1: There's a lot of feelings that go into careers and
- 16:25Speaker 1: negotiations and stints with teams. That's a really cool, unique journey.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Do you ever reflect on how unique it is?
- 16:33Speaker 3: Every day I pinch myself. I mean, like in the NFL,
- 16:36Speaker 3: it's like the hardest part is sometimes just getting opportunity.
- 16:39Speaker 3: A lot of times you're good enough to do it,
- 16:41Speaker 3: but you don't have the opportunity, whether it's where you're drafted,
- 16:44Speaker 3: who's in front of you, is it a contract situation?
- 16:47Speaker 3: Does the owner want to play somebody? Does the coach
- 16:48Speaker 3: want to play somebody? Or are you their guy? And
- 16:50Speaker 3: then do you play well enough? Are you healthy? Like,
- 16:52Speaker 3: what's your contract status? Like, so much that goes into
- 16:56Speaker 3: it besides just what people see on Sundays. But, you know,
- 16:59Speaker 3: when I had my chance to go back to Minnesota,
- 17:02Speaker 3: leaving Tampa, I had three or four chances. I looked
- 17:05Speaker 3: at going to Miami, Chicago, and Seattle. And Detroit, actually.
- 17:11Speaker 3: But then at that time, I was like, where I
- 17:13Speaker 3: was at in my career, Mike Tice was the head coach.
- 17:16Speaker 3: And I knew that system coming back to Minnesota and just,
- 17:20Speaker 3: I felt like, you know what, this would be a
- 17:22Speaker 3: good situation for me coming. Cause I actually spent nine
- 17:26Speaker 3: years of my life in Minnesota, in Gage Hall and
- 17:30Speaker 3: training camps up there. I just had a lot of
- 17:34Speaker 3: great fond memories, great relationships up there. I feel like
- 17:37Speaker 3: it was just a great fit for me to come back. My, yeah, my,
- 17:40Speaker 3: my journey is incredible when you actually look at it,
- 17:42Speaker 3: just what you had to overcome, what you had to
- 17:44Speaker 3: go through. and then being able to survive and make
- 17:47Speaker 3: a career out of it. Honestly, I was the 227th pick,
- 17:51Speaker 3: ninth round pick in the 1992 draft, and I only
- 17:54Speaker 3: started one game my senior year in college.
- 17:56Speaker 1: That's crazy. Wow.
- 17:58Speaker 3: You just have to have somebody believe in you, and
- 18:01Speaker 3: you've got to be good enough to come through in
- 18:03Speaker 3: the clutch. My dad always told me it's better to
- 18:05Speaker 3: be prepared and not have an opportunity than have an
- 18:07Speaker 3: opportunity and not be prepared. So when your moment comes,
- 18:10Speaker 3: you have to be ready. And so for all those moments,
- 18:13Speaker 3: I felt like I did all the preparation work.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I have a couple more football questions, at least one more,
- 18:18Speaker 1: but we have to detour for a second. And Chad's
- 18:21Speaker 1: going to not like this, but I'm going to do it.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Until you got on this call, potentially one of the
- 18:28Speaker 1: greatest pop-a-shot players I've ever seen in my life is him.
- 18:32Speaker 1: And like, I I'm so excited to hear him talk
- 18:36Speaker 1: to you because you just, a couple of years ago,
- 18:38Speaker 1: you just up. And I know you've been doing the
- 18:39Speaker 1: trick shots on social media. Everybody can follow you as big,
- 18:42Speaker 1: bad Brad, but at some point you're like, you know what?
- 18:44Speaker 1: I'm going to try to qualify for the Papa shot
- 18:47Speaker 1: world championship. And didn't you become the oldest qualifier and
- 18:50Speaker 1: got all the way through to the world championships?
- 18:53Speaker 3: I did. I mean, I grew up going to alleys
- 18:55Speaker 3: and Chuckie cheeses and bars and playing Papa shot. And
- 19:01Speaker 3: it came on the national Papa shot came on two
- 19:03Speaker 3: years ago. And then, I said, I could do that.
- 19:05Speaker 3: So I got on there, qualified, made the final eight.
- 19:09Speaker 3: We were on the Ocho, ESPN Ocho. I mean, I
- 19:13Speaker 3: had the butterflies. The jitters are going there, man. But
- 19:17Speaker 3: these guys you're competing against, like, you know, I was
- 19:20Speaker 3: shooting 1,500, 2,000 shots a day in preparation for it.
- 19:23Speaker 3: I mean, so these pop shot guys, it's not like
- 19:25Speaker 3: what you see on TV is a little bit different reality.
- 19:28Speaker 3: you're getting off about 70 to 75 shots in a
- 19:31Speaker 3: 55-second period. In the football world, you think of Tom
- 19:35Speaker 3: Brady and Peyton Manning and Mahomes. These are the pop-a-shot
- 19:40Speaker 3: kings that you're going against now. It's a great community
- 19:43Speaker 3: of pop-a-shot qualifiers throughout the country that take place that
- 19:48Speaker 3: you have to make it. And so I got to
- 19:50Speaker 3: do that about a year and a half ago in
- 19:52Speaker 3: the final eight. And I'm going to try to do
- 19:54Speaker 3: it again next year. It's very, very, very competitive. Let
- 19:56Speaker 3: me just say.
- 19:57Speaker 2: That's exciting. I've been watching the trick shot stuff. And
- 20:01Speaker 2: I have a question because Although three quarterbacks.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Have done it, right?
- 20:05Speaker 2: Thrown themselves a touchdown pass. You were the OG. You
- 20:08Speaker 2: were the first. And I'm wondering if that moment lit
- 20:12Speaker 2: the bulb for the trick shot stuff.
- 20:16Speaker 3: No, not really. The trick shot stuff, it started happening
- 20:19Speaker 3: during the pandemic. And my kids were on TikTok. And
- 20:23Speaker 3: I was like, what can I do? I want to
- 20:24Speaker 3: be a part of this. I've made some funny videos
- 20:26Speaker 3: of me playing back in the day or workout videos.
- 20:28Speaker 3: And then I started making all these trick shots with
- 20:30Speaker 3: football and basketball. Those are two things I was really
- 20:32Speaker 3: good at. And so the trick shots, it wasn't just
- 20:36Speaker 3: a one trick shot, it was multiple, four or five
- 20:39Speaker 3: shots in a row. So like in football, I went
- 20:41Speaker 3: to the corner pocket of the end zone and threw
- 20:44Speaker 3: around the first pole and hit the second pole, hit
- 20:45Speaker 3: like five in a row, and then throw in between
- 20:48Speaker 3: the goalposts into a trash bucket in between the goalposts
- 20:52Speaker 3: from the corner pocket. But in basketball, it might be
- 20:55Speaker 3: a shot off my head, spin it off my finger,
- 20:58Speaker 3: throw it over the backboard, make another ball before that
- 21:00Speaker 3: one goes in, and then throw a football to link
- 21:03Speaker 3: the court to the other basketball hoop. And so it
- 21:07Speaker 3: really gave me a lot of exercise. And the difference
- 21:10Speaker 3: with me is like, dude, perfect. It's me, a bag
- 21:15Speaker 3: of balls, a tripod camera, and a bunch of water.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Sometimes it's first time, first take. Sometimes it's call it
- 21:24Speaker 3: a lifetime of practice because I've been doing all this
- 21:26Speaker 3: football and basketball my whole life. And then sometimes it
- 21:29Speaker 3: takes what it takes. And so some trick shots, I'll
- 21:32Speaker 3: be honest with you, I did one the other day
- 21:35Speaker 3: that took, it's taken me three years. Whoa.
- 21:39Speaker 1: What was the shot?
- 21:40Speaker 3: So make a football, then take a Frisbee, I mean,
- 21:45Speaker 3: take a basketball, throw it up as high as I
- 21:47Speaker 3: can the length of the court. It's going to bounce,
- 21:50Speaker 3: but then I have to throw a Frisbee in before
- 21:52Speaker 3: the basketball goes in and then football shot after that.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Like it's a, and every time you miss, you got
- 21:59Speaker 3: to go chase the ball and the frisbee and everything else.
- 22:02Speaker 3: And balls are all over the court. So I got
- 22:05Speaker 3: into making multiple shot kind of thing. So whatever, like
- 22:08Speaker 3: there's a three basketball deal where, I take a basketball,
- 22:12Speaker 3: I'm behind the backboard, and I throw it over the backboard, backspin,
- 22:15Speaker 3: and I take two of the basketballs, and I got
- 22:17Speaker 3: to shoot those over the backboard. Those two balls have
- 22:20Speaker 3: to go in before that original ball that goes over
- 22:23Speaker 3: bounces back and goes in. Like, it's just crazy. When
- 22:27Speaker 3: it happens, it's true jubilation. I'm out there celebrating by myself.
- 22:30Speaker 3: You hear me say, let's go. But I'm hoping the
- 22:32Speaker 3: whole neighborhood's woke up by just, you know, me yelling
- 22:35Speaker 3: and screaming out there. And it's a great feeling. I've
- 22:38Speaker 3: had a lot of fun with it and just sharing
- 22:40Speaker 3: with other people.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Yeah, it probably triggers that like elite level athlete of,
- 22:47Speaker 1: you know, you chase your whole life after titles and
- 22:49Speaker 1: something that's really hard and almost no one can do.
- 22:52Speaker 1: It's kind of like a mini version of that. You
- 22:53Speaker 1: spend three years trying to get that shot. It must
- 22:56Speaker 1: feel like winning a championship almost.
- 22:58Speaker 3: It is. It is. It's setting a goal and it's consistency.
- 23:02Speaker 3: And the more you practice, it's something the better you become.
- 23:05Speaker 3: There's days that some days, yeah, I get it. I
- 23:07Speaker 3: get I make the shot 20 minutes or some days
- 23:09Speaker 3: it takes a week. But when it goes in, it's worthwhile.
- 23:17Speaker 3: And I try to make those shots, those videos as
- 23:20Speaker 3: hard as it can be where I don't think I'd
- 23:22Speaker 3: even want to try it again. So if someone were
- 23:24Speaker 3: able to do it, I'm like, I know what it
- 23:26Speaker 3: takes to have been able to accomplish it. But more importantly,
- 23:30Speaker 3: it's just about me out there having fun and getting
- 23:33Speaker 3: exercise and hoping to make a special moment.
- 23:36Speaker 2: That's great. One of my favorite moments in trash talking
- 23:41Speaker 2: history is 2019 the president's cup tiger woods hits a
- 23:44Speaker 2: putt and before he even watches it go in he
- 23:46Speaker 2: takes his hat off and he shakes the guy's hand
- 23:48Speaker 2: because he beat him and he made the putt so
- 23:50Speaker 2: what i love about your videos is you will shoot
- 23:54Speaker 2: all of all of the trick shots and then your
- 23:56Speaker 2: last ball you'll throw it up you'll take your hat
- 23:59Speaker 2: off and you'll show it to the camera and then
- 24:02Speaker 2: the ball goes in and you go yeah i just
- 24:04Speaker 2: love that so much.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Yeah it's yeah I get the hat like this right here. Yeah,
- 24:08Speaker 3: that's right.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right.
- 24:10Speaker 2: And the arm pump, yeah.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Hello, baby. It is real. It goes in. It goes in.
- 24:15Speaker 3: It's kind of weird. Like, it's kind of weird. You
- 24:18Speaker 3: remember the movie Forrest Gump when he's running in the
- 24:20Speaker 3: desert and he's got all those people chasing him and
- 24:22Speaker 3: then he gets in and he's like, what did I do?
- 24:26Speaker 3: And so when the shot goes in, I kind of like,
- 24:29Speaker 3: I can't believe it actually went in. What's next?
- 24:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:36Speaker 3: I mean, you got to think of the next video
- 24:37Speaker 3: or shots you can do, but it's true jubilation is
- 24:40Speaker 3: what it really is.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you what's next. Next time Tom West
- 24:45Speaker 1: and the boys bring you up to Minnesota for a game,
- 24:47Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you something. It's not a trick shot,
- 24:50Speaker 1: but this duo has an invented shooting game that we
- 24:53Speaker 1: call Gergamu. Don't make fun of the name until you
- 24:56Speaker 1: try it. It's multiple shots from every spot on the court,
- 24:59Speaker 1: multiple rounds with a lightning, like It is the most
- 25:03Speaker 1: fun in the world. You're going to have to come
- 25:05Speaker 1: play it with us. My boy here has the record
- 25:08Speaker 1: and you would absolutely love it. It's a lot of fun.
- 25:11Speaker 3: I mean, that's awesome. That's awesome. Can't wait to do it.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Last thing before we let you go. I'm not going
- 25:17Speaker 1: to make you make a prediction of your two former teams, but,
- 25:21Speaker 1: you know, are you paying attention to the teams? What
- 25:23Speaker 1: do you think is going to happen this week and
- 25:24Speaker 1: anything you're looking forward to in the matchup?
- 25:27Speaker 3: Well, number one, it's going to be hot down there. But,
- 25:29Speaker 3: you know, great teams. Like, you have to look a
- 25:31Speaker 3: lot of times at what they did last year at
- 25:33Speaker 3: the end of the season when they didn't really make
- 25:35Speaker 3: the playoffs. They had grit about them. They found a
- 25:38Speaker 3: way to win those games when they weren't going to
- 25:40Speaker 3: make the playoffs. And they obviously started out 2-0 this year.
- 25:43Speaker 3: Colin Murray's coming back. So, he'll get his first start.
- 25:46Speaker 3: I mean, it's really a first full game kind of thing.
- 25:50Speaker 3: But it's fun to watch Minnesota start out the way
- 25:52Speaker 3: they do. It's great, great people in the building. Great organization.
- 25:56Speaker 3: And you just want to see him have success. So
- 25:58Speaker 3: it's going to be a great matchup. I mean, it
- 25:59Speaker 3: really is. And you go against a Brian Flores defense, like,
- 26:03Speaker 3: you don't know him. Defense, it looks like a pump
- 26:05Speaker 3: block every time. Like, you don't know who's coming or going, man.
- 26:08Speaker 3: So it's going to be a great showdown with him
- 26:09Speaker 3: and Baker Mayfield. And expect a close game. But the Vikings,
- 26:13Speaker 3: they're off to a great start, man. So got a
- 26:15Speaker 3: chance to be 3-0. Excited about it.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Well, we really appreciate it. Thank you so much for
- 26:19Speaker 1: taking time with.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Us, Brad.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks, Brad.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Let's thank y'all.
- 26:23Speaker 1: That was great. Unreal.
- 26:25Speaker 2: What a fun person.
- 26:26Speaker 1: If this is what the tailgate is going to be,
- 26:28Speaker 1: where we get to keep talking to guys that we
- 26:31Speaker 1: watched when we were kids and they're awesome, it's going
- 26:34Speaker 1: to be a fun season of shows throughout this year.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Let's get into the game a little bit. As he
- 26:42Speaker 1: alluded to, we're off to a good start. Tampa Bay,
- 26:47Speaker 1: you never want to play a team. That loss to Cleveland,
- 26:51Speaker 1: there's going to be some hunger.
- 26:53Speaker 2: Of course.
- 26:54Speaker 1: But I think the two things that I'm... They're very basic.
- 26:58Speaker 1: But the two things that I'm super curious about is, one,
- 27:02Speaker 1: what's next for Brian Flores? I know. It's almost like
- 27:06Speaker 1: this season went to this new level where we know
- 27:08Speaker 1: he blitzes a lot. But what they did with the
- 27:11Speaker 1: high pressure rate against Green Bay, and then what they
- 27:14Speaker 1: did against... The Bears, it almost feels like he's at
- 27:17Speaker 1: a different psychological warfare level.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Yeah, what Brad said is it looks like they're trying
- 27:23Speaker 2: to get a punt. Yeah. And that's exactly the way
- 27:26Speaker 2: to describe it. There are so many guys on the line,
- 27:29Speaker 2: and then he's dropping people back that you don't think
- 27:31Speaker 2: he's going to drop back. It is masterful already.
- 27:34Speaker 1: I was talking with Lieber, and he said this thing.
- 27:37Speaker 1: He said he didn't think the blitz rate was very
- 27:39Speaker 1: high after the game on Sunday, and then everybody came
- 27:42Speaker 1: at him that next-gen stats said it was really high.
- 27:45Speaker 1: And then he kind of broke it down this way.
- 27:47Speaker 1: He goes, the whole thing with Flores is it's where
- 27:52Speaker 1: the pressure comes from. Like in a 3-4, you have
- 27:55Speaker 1: five guys on the line. If those five guys come
- 27:59Speaker 1: by themselves, is that technically it's five guys instead of four?
- 28:03Speaker 1: So maybe that's how they qualified as a blitz. But
- 28:06Speaker 1: the fascinating thing about Flores and what seems to have
- 28:08Speaker 1: gone to even another level this year is, which five
- 28:12Speaker 1: guys he's, he's bringing five 70, 80% of the time,
- 28:15Speaker 1: but he's just put on steroids, the which five guys thing.
- 28:21Speaker 1: And I am fascinated to see what that looks like.
- 28:25Speaker 1: And I'm fascinated to see this emergence of Dallas Turner
- 28:29Speaker 1: run up against Tristan Wirfs, who's one of the best
- 28:31Speaker 1: tackles in the league.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Yeah, that's going to be an interesting matchup for sure.
- 28:35Speaker 2: And if Isaiah Rogers can, I mean, keep his momentum going.
- 28:40Speaker 2: He had such a fantastic game.
- 28:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:44Speaker 2: I mean, just really unbelievable.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Can you imagine being fast enough to block a punt? Like,
- 28:50Speaker 1: I know there are guys, there are a lot of
- 28:51Speaker 1: fast guys in the league, but he is just a
- 28:53Speaker 1: different sort of fast. Right. Where in, you block a
- 28:57Speaker 1: punt off the side in the rain on Soldier Field.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Yeah, the field goal block was unbelievable.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Did I say punt? I meant field goal.
- 29:06Speaker 2: That's okay. And then you had all the way down
- 29:09Speaker 2: when they got to the one yard line, Metellus was
- 29:12Speaker 2: in on, it seemed like every single tackle on that
- 29:16Speaker 2: entire drive. So if he keeps that momentum, I mean, man,
- 29:19Speaker 2: this defense is looking so good and it's coming from everywhere,
- 29:23Speaker 2: like really everywhere.
- 29:25Speaker 1: So then that brings me to the second point, which
- 29:26Speaker 1: is also very basic, but Kyler's going to be back. Yeah.
- 29:31Speaker 1: I've loved the commitment to the run so far. I
- 29:35Speaker 1: think most people are like, what is it going to
- 29:38Speaker 1: look like with him? And can they catch up i
- 29:41Speaker 1: don't want to say catch up to the defense as
- 29:43Speaker 1: though they're going to be at the same level doing
- 29:45Speaker 1: this but like can the complementary football catch up because
- 29:48Speaker 1: we all know the weapons on that side of the
- 29:50Speaker 1: ball if this is the defense and we get like
- 29:54Speaker 1: we've all seen when KOC gets good quarterback play, what
- 29:56Speaker 1: the offense and what the team looks like, man, it just,
- 30:00Speaker 1: for as much skepticism and as much, this is the
- 30:04Speaker 1: Vikings over under talk. There was, that wasn't very, you know, glowing.
- 30:09Speaker 1: It could get really, really fun. So I'm, I'm fascinated
- 30:12Speaker 1: at what the offense is going to look like. And
- 30:15Speaker 1: if they're able to take a step towards what they
- 30:17Speaker 1: want to be. Yeah.
- 30:17Speaker 2: It's going to be a different look for sure with
- 30:19Speaker 2: Murray coming back and, uh, But, you know, we still
- 30:22Speaker 2: have all the weapons and the lines playing well. I just,
- 30:26Speaker 2: I'm really looking forward to this matchup. And Brad had
- 30:29Speaker 2: alluded to the heat at four o'clock in Tampa.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I mean, but all you got to remember, we're coming
- 30:35Speaker 2: out of summer here. This isn't like we've been in
- 30:36Speaker 2: winter for a long time and have to go down
- 30:38Speaker 2: and play in a pressure cooker. We're coming out of summer.
- 30:41Speaker 2: So it's not going to be hopefully that big of
- 30:44Speaker 2: an issue.
- 30:45Speaker 1: It always is in Florida, but it feels like Miami
- 30:48Speaker 1: is always worse. But right. I don't know. We'll see. I,
- 30:51Speaker 1: I think it's one of those things where if you
- 30:54Speaker 1: can win these two games the way you did and
- 30:56Speaker 1: then you go win a heat game against a Florida
- 30:59Speaker 1: team that's used to it, now you're two games away
- 31:01Speaker 1: from 5-0 against two teams in situations where you feel
- 31:04Speaker 1: like you should really have a shot.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Yeah, and then we invite Miami up to the U.S.
- 31:09Speaker 1: Bank Stadium.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Let's just leave the windows open. 100%.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Let's just crank that bad boy open. Let the air
- 31:15Speaker 1: run through. How cool would it be if that glass
- 31:19Speaker 1: just peeled open? I know. be wild. No one should
- 31:22Speaker 1: let us be in charge of anything. What? Let's do predictions.
- 31:26Speaker 1: So who's the guy you're watching?
- 31:28Speaker 2: Well, I'm not going to watch a guy in particular.
- 31:30Speaker 2: I'm going to watch the special teams as a whole,
- 31:32Speaker 2: because I think, uh, I think field position is going
- 31:35Speaker 2: to be big in this game. And I think that, uh,
- 31:38Speaker 2: special teams is going to keep them, uh, buried deep.
- 31:43Speaker 2: And so it's, it's never going to be, uh, an
- 31:45Speaker 2: issue like a, like a gimme, there's not going to
- 31:47Speaker 2: be any, huge breakaways for a field goal with four
- 31:51Speaker 2: seconds left, none of that stuff. I think they're going
- 31:53Speaker 2: to keep everything where it needs to be, and then
- 31:56Speaker 2: we can control the game that way.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Back-to-back weeks where a special team's play changed the direction
- 32:01Speaker 1: of a game. Miles Price in week one, the field
- 32:04Speaker 1: goal block in week two. Yeah, I'm going to go...
- 32:10Speaker 1: The team just looked mean on Sunday against the Bears,
- 32:16Speaker 1: and I don't know... when the last time you could
- 32:20Speaker 1: say that against the Bears. I'm not trying to disparage
- 32:23Speaker 1: any past Viking teams. Of course. But it seems like
- 32:27Speaker 1: so often we haven't been put into the mean category
- 32:31Speaker 1: over the years when you go to Soldier Field. So
- 32:33Speaker 1: to go in there and control the line of scrimmage
- 32:36Speaker 1: on both sides in the mean way that we did,
- 32:39Speaker 1: Jalen Redmond on one side destroying people, Caleb Banks finally
- 32:43Speaker 1: having a good game. But then the O-line just making
- 32:46Speaker 1: that run game work. But it's not a rain game now.
- 32:49Speaker 1: It's anything can happen. I am looking to see if
- 32:53Speaker 1: the O-line, because I was really bullish on them. Can
- 32:57Speaker 1: they continue to be who I hoped they were going
- 32:59Speaker 1: to be? Because stepping aside from what we just said
- 33:02Speaker 1: of the offense, if it's that defense and all of
- 33:04Speaker 1: a sudden you have a top eight O-line in the
- 33:06Speaker 1: league and they stay healthy, which is, I think, where
- 33:09Speaker 1: this group could go. that's where it gets real real
- 33:12Speaker 1: fun the history of this team when you go back
- 33:14Speaker 1: to the far of your elite o-line 98 elite o-line
- 33:17Speaker 1: when you have a great o-line you can do a
- 33:20Speaker 1: lot of good things so i'll be watching them and
- 33:24Speaker 1: neither of us will be watching in tampa despite our
- 33:26Speaker 1: desire to attend cuba yeah before the game that'd be
- 33:31Speaker 1: nice but uh are we gonna are we gonna be
- 33:35Speaker 1: at the dolphins game together I.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Mean, I'm hopefully going to be there making it work.
- 33:40Speaker 2: It's the crucial catch game. I'm going to bring my mama.
- 33:43Speaker 1: That's a big one. That'll be a big one for
- 33:45Speaker 1: the Chad Daddy family. Well, hopefully we're 3-0. Thank you
- 33:50Speaker 1: to the great Chad Daniels. Thank you to Trick Shot
- 33:53Speaker 1: and Papa Shot King, Brad Johnson, the former Buccaneer and Viking,
- 33:58Speaker 1: and apparently a bunch of other teams that we forgot
- 34:00Speaker 1: to even think about. We really appreciate him joining the show.
- 34:05Speaker 1: And thank you, guys, for listening to our podcast feed.
- 34:08Speaker 1: While you're here, make sure you give us a good review.
- 34:10Speaker 1: It sure would help us out a lot. Finally, a
- 34:13Speaker 1: huge shout out to Ticketmaster, the official ticket marketplace of
- 34:15Speaker 1: the Minnesota Vikings, for helping make this show happen. Enjoy
- 34:19Speaker 1: the game, everybody.
