- 0:17Find yourself in.
- 0:23Hi, I am Nola Simon.
- 0:25I'm the host of the Hope and Possibilities Podcast, and this episode is really
- 0:30to talk about what my, what I'm seeing for 2026 and for the future.
- 0:36And honestly, what I'm seeing is a move away from my work with
- 0:42hybrid, remote and actually just embedding that into leadership.
- 0:47In my personal opinion, we are not going away from flexibility.
- 0:53We are not going away from hybrid, remote.
- 0:55What we are going away from, and what some of us will go away from is the debate
- 1:01about who has permission to grant us the access to the type of work that we want.
- 1:10It's what the people want.
- 1:11If you talk to people a lot of times what they need is flexible schedules,
- 1:18the ability to make a decision on the day, because of what's happening with
- 1:23childcare, what's happening with elder care, what's happening with the weather,
- 1:27travel schedules, all kinds of different things, all kinds of different reasons.
- 1:32But that flexibility to treat each.
- 1:37Individual as a person capable of making decisions that are in
- 1:42the best interest for themselves personally and for the business.
- 1:47That's something that people want, right?
- 1:50And people are going to start working in ways that give
- 1:54them more of what they want.
- 1:56There's all kinds of studies that have recently come out that basically said
- 1:59that, that wellbeing, that sense of wellbeing, that sense of autonomy,
- 2:03that sense of flexibility, it's work life integration, and that's more
- 2:08valuable to people than compensation.
- 2:12Now people are gonna get that bent because people hear the word
- 2:16money and they automatically think that's the be all and end all.
- 2:20But in practice, what we're seeing is people actually making choices
- 2:25that are in line with what they need financially, but also how they.
- 2:31Embed their work into their life so that they get more of what they need
- 2:35to make their families function.
- 2:38And family could look like anything, right?
- 2:41Whatever's important to that specific person.
- 2:44How does your day look?
- 2:45Who do you live with?
- 2:46Who do you interact with and where does work fit into that?
- 2:50And how do you choose what makes the most sense for you now?
- 3:00The circular debate is really caused by people who are trying to retain identity.
- 3:10They're trying to retain process, they're trying to retain power and control.
- 3:14And they have ingrained narratives about how the way.
- 3:19About the way the world works, right?
- 3:22Real estate is a big factor of that.
- 3:24But it's also identity, if you are a leader and real estate has been good
- 3:31to you both personally, professionally how do you make the choice to actually
- 3:35back away from real estate and recognize that the depreciation that people have
- 3:43been talking about is a real thing?
- 3:44How do you convince your board of that?
- 3:46It's a challenging thing because what you're asking people to do is
- 3:50reset mindsets about the way the world works, and that's where that
- 3:55circular debate comes in because so many people are invested in this.
- 3:59If you have 20 years of working in building maintenance, in, designing
- 4:04offices and ex employee experience built around in-person events, you
- 4:11have a vested interest in the way that.
- 4:14Real estate and space contain people, and that's your track record.
- 4:22That's your CV in moving away from that's a pivot that you then have to explain.
- 4:28People don't do that kind of thing unless they're really motivated to do that and
- 4:34to have external forces push them in that direction, that's a challenging thing.
- 4:39But what we're actually seeing is convergence because, since the
- 4:43pandemic, there's been a distinct move, obviously towards flexibility
- 4:46and the hybrid remote way of working.
- 4:50But what now is happening is AI is being introduced, right?
- 4:53And.
- 4:55Depending on who you are, what you think about ai, that's still going to change
- 5:00how people work because AI never sleeps.
- 5:03So if you're integrating AI into your role and AI is doing transactional things
- 5:09that AI is capable of doing right now, AI doesn't need to be in a building.
- 5:14AI doesn't need to be in a physical space.
- 5:17AI can be influenced without.
- 5:20Monitoring body language.
- 5:22So what does that look like?
- 5:24The current narrative that's going on right now is that AI is likely to shrink
- 5:29the workforce, meaning that there's going to be fewer and fewer people.
- 5:34So this push, this narrative to bring people back to an office is in
- 5:38direct conflict with the narrative that we're seeing around ai.
- 5:43Now, I personally don't think either narrative is right.
- 5:46I think that there's going to be something new and creative because
- 5:52I'm always suspicious about a narrative where, people are told that
- 6:01human beings aren't worth betting on, that human beings are gonna go away.
- 6:05We're gonna reduce head count.
- 6:07If you reduce head count.
- 6:08Who's actually gonna be buying your products because nobody's
- 6:11gonna actually have money.
- 6:14Then you get into the whole government benefit scheme and what
- 6:18does that look like, and how long is that gonna take to work out?
- 6:21So I personally don't think we've come across a narrative of what
- 6:25the future is actually gonna be.
- 6:26That's compelling, that's persuasive.
- 6:29I think the truth is somewhere in the middle.
- 6:31But again, that's going to be.
- 6:35Developed over years.
- 6:37It's going to be incremental in the way that we approach that.
- 6:41So what really matters are the choices we make, and that's where my
- 6:47pivot from focusing just solely on.
- 6:52What up until now I've been most proud of, which is my ability to actually influence
- 6:57the hybrid remote adoption of policy.
- 7:01How to make that work smoothly, how to advise companies on how to adopt it.
- 7:06It feels restricted right now because I don't think.
- 7:13That it ends solely there.
- 7:14I think it's a leadership decision.
- 7:16I think it's more of a question about reinvention and ongoing, continual change.
- 7:22Change is not a project anymore.
- 7:24It's actually a reinvention that's never gonna stop because there's so
- 7:29many variables coming at us in all different aspects of life and work that.
- 7:38What we're looking at is how do we reinvent identities?
- 7:41How do we reinvent organizations to redistribute work, redistribute
- 7:45tasks, redistribute value?
- 7:48What matters to people?
- 7:49How do we make people matter?
- 7:51People show up and do a good job when they feel that they have a sense of purpose
- 7:56and they feel that they themselves matter.
- 7:59And what we're seeing in the narratives right now, especially the AI narrative, is
- 8:06there's a certain type of leadership out there that
- 8:09basically says people don't matter.
- 8:12That's.
- 8:12Is never gonna be something I'm gonna put my weight behind because I think people
- 8:19and wisdom, all the things that matter.
- 8:23To human beings are far more important than this narrow story that tech founders
- 8:31are going are spending right now.
- 8:34That's really only going to benefit a very narrow section of the population,
- 8:39and it's really gonna be detrimental to others when somebody is telling
- 8:42you that something is guaranteed and this is the way it's gonna be, and
- 8:46they're giving you that prediction.
- 8:48Futurists don't.
- 8:50Give prediction.
- 8:51They look at trends and scenarios and convergences, and that's what I'm seeing
- 8:59is we have to look at the decisions that we're making and that leads me into a.
- 9:05The leadership aspect, right?
- 9:07And that's, how are you reducing your risk?
- 9:10How are you growing your potential and your business?
- 9:14And how are you doing this credibly and sustainably?
- 9:19That's really what the choice is gonna be because you don't know the
- 9:22future, and the future is coming at us faster than ever before.
- 9:30It's important to look at the way that we're making those decisions,
- 9:33what data we're using to support them and how we trust that any of
- 9:39this is the right direction, right?
- 9:42So this is where I'm going to be pivoting to the business into more of that.
- 9:46It's really a matter of discernment as well too.
- 9:49And discernment is a really tough thing too.
- 9:54Teach anyone because it's fundamentally based in emotional intelligence, but
- 9:58it's also based in what your history has been, what your skills are who
- 10:04you trust pattern recognition how you connect the dots, and how do you take
- 10:12that from an individual level and apply that at an organizational level.
- 10:17And discernment is important for everyone, especially with the way that
- 10:22misinformation is becoming so prevalent.
- 10:24And even, how day AI is pulling data and how it's being trained.
- 10:29How do you know that what you're reading is actually true
- 10:33and reliable and trustworthy?
- 10:36Discernment has become.
- 10:38Honestly, one of the biggest things that I'm concerned about as well too,
- 10:42and especially in a leadership aspect,
- 10:47you really have to be able to have those tough conversations about
- 10:52how all of that feeds into the decisions you're making, both EU as an
- 10:56individual and you as an organization.
- 10:59And I think that's the bigger conversation where I can be.
- 11:05More useful.
- 11:06So again, it's not that I don't believe in hybrid, remote, or flexibility.
- 11:10I absolutely do.
- 11:10I think it's the way of the future.
- 11:12We're seeing all these things about the four wheel four day work week.
- 11:16That all ties into this conversation about the universal benefit and
- 11:21how people are gonna make money.
- 11:22And it's going to be not necessarily just what they're able to earn from
- 11:27employment, but it's also, the.
- 11:30The side projects the portfolio careers, all of these things are converging to make
- 11:37work be something completely different than what we've seen up until now.
- 11:42But there are forces that are gonna drag us backwards.
- 11:45How do you anchor yourself?
- 11:48So that you feel safe and stable.
- 11:50And then how do you make that trust leap to move into the next?
- 11:55How do you crash that threshold into what's going to be your future?
- 11:59That's the more interesting conversation, right?
- 12:02And that's where I think that I can be of more value.
- 12:06So fundamentally, it's all.
- 12:07Part and partial of it.
- 12:09And again, this is more of a a love letter to the future of work.
- 12:12So I'm gonna be changing how I work on LinkedIn how I do
- 12:15newsletters, how I do email.
- 12:17You're probably gonna see less of me on a lot of the social media that I do because
- 12:21I do think that long form is really where I need to be more than anything else.
- 12:28And I am, I'm gonna be switching up what I do with the podcast.
- 12:30I don't think I'm gonna be doing guest episodes unless there's a guest.
- 12:34I just can't resist in the opportunity to have a conversation is irresistible.
- 12:40I think that I'm going to be using this as a way to flesh out conversations
- 12:46that need to be had that the nuance and.
- 12:50That's something I'm going to be experimenting with more.
- 12:54What can the podcast be?
- 12:56Who knew it was gonna be a Global Globes category.
- 12:59Now, podcasting has come so much further than I ever thought it would going to
- 13:04be when I started this five years ago.
- 13:06Now.
- 13:07I have issues with the way that the Global Golden Globes actually
- 13:11created the criteria and who's eligible to win those awards.
- 13:15But realistically, I'm also not doing podcasting because I wanna win awards.
- 13:19I'm using it for a specific reason directly related to my business and how I
- 13:27communicate and help people think through.
- 13:32These types of thorny types of problems.
- 13:35And it's not thought leadership.
- 13:37It's how do you lead thought, and that's what I'm interested in.
- 13:40So that's how I plan to use the podcast as well.
- 13:42So you'll see more of that.
- 13:44My plan really is podcast newsletters, so LinkedIn, substack and also email.
- 13:52I'm really going to lean into email because I really have not.
- 13:55Done a good job.
- 13:56I have created email lists.
- 13:57I do have a whole raft of people who have subscribed to newsletters and things that
- 14:02I write, but I'm going to be tweaking that and cleaning those lists and asking
- 14:07people to unsubscribe if the new direction isn't necessarily what they're after with.
- 14:11So I can identify people that truly want to be in conversation with me.
- 14:16'cause what I find is a lot of people follow me, but nobody really ever.
- 14:20Has those conversations on an ongoing basis.
- 14:23The people who actually speak to me about things that matter to them, that's
- 14:27a really small kind of group of people, and I'd like to get more of the people
- 14:31who are willing to commit to actual change and have those conversations
- 14:40and then work through that, right?
- 14:42So I haven't found.
- 14:45The magic in terms of how I create a safe space for those types of conversations
- 14:51that lead into actual business.
- 14:53So that's what I'm.
- 14:55Working on an ongoing basis.
- 14:57So anyways, that's my plan for 2026.
- 15:01I will be trying to lay up content that will support that more.
- 15:04But this is the first thing that I wanted to start with and
- 15:08hopefully you find that interesting.
- 15:10I will actually be including a link of been testing out a way for
- 15:14you to interact with the podcast.
- 15:15You can actually leave a voicemail and send with questions.
- 15:19If you record a message, you can indicate to me whether you'd like me to be able
- 15:23to use that as clips in the podcast.
- 15:26Questions are the lifeblood of how you stay on top of what people are thinking
- 15:31and getting that type of information.
- 15:33That's really such a valuable, so what ways work for that?
- 15:38I. TikTok.
- 15:39Lots of people talk about TikTok being A F for questions, but I just find TikTok
- 15:45to be a little bit toxic, not to mention it's also really dominated by certain.
- 15:53Demographics and countries.
- 15:57So I'm interested in the people who are willing to speak directly to me in a way
- 16:02that feels safe to them without actually having to go through the gates of hell
- 16:06on public comment forums like TikTok.
- 16:09So that's what I'm experimenting with as well too.
- 16:12So check the show notes for that.
- 16:14And I'll also put it in my LinkedIn thing when I share this, so I'll
- 16:17put it on Substack as well too.
- 16:18So anyways, hopefully that's interesting to you.
- 16:21I'd love to know what you're thinking about what questions
- 16:24are keeping you up at night.
- 16:26The thorny pieces of identity that really keep on coming up
- 16:30is who are you going to be if
- 16:35you have to move away from what has always worked for you?
- 16:40So that's an interesting thing.
- 16:41A lot of times people don't find these questions until they've actually been
- 16:45laid off or they retire or they move or whatever happens to interrupt their life.
- 16:50A lot of times it's called life quakes.
- 16:53Life quakes are an interesting thing to you to explore.
- 16:56But those are the types of questions I'd love to hear more about.
- 16:58What keeps you.
- 17:00Awake.
- 17:01What helps you think about the future in a different way?
- 17:05And we don't have to have answers.
- 17:07It's more about how are you thinking about it?
- 17:09That's the fun part.
- 17:10So anyways, talk soon.
- 17:12Bye.
