Transcript
- 0:08There is someone at the door and I don't know them, stranger
- 0:15danger. There is someone at the store
- 0:19and I don't know them. Stranger danger.
- 0:25Welcome back to a hamster with a blood pen knife.
- 0:28The BBV commentary podcast. Yes, at least today.
- 0:34Hello. Who's that talking there?
- 0:36It's me, Dylan, BBV superfan. Do you realise this is the third
- 0:40day on the trot? People have had an episode
- 0:42published of you and me talking about BBV classics.
- 0:46Oh wow, what's wrong with them? What time to be alive?
- 0:49What time to be alive, what time for me, what time for us.
- 0:52We're sat. We've watched The Stranger all
- 0:54afternoon. I've come to your house in
- 0:56Eastbourne. Oh, am I seeing the beautiful
- 0:58sea front? Are we going to see a panto?
- 1:01It's nearly Christmas, what are we doing?
- 1:02We've sat in and we've watched The Stranger and I wouldn't have
- 1:05it any other way. What I was going to say,
- 1:07Cecilia, is there anything you'd rather be doing?
- 1:09Well, it involves Nicola O'Brien.
- 1:13OK, fair. Pretending to be a planet.
- 1:15Fair. Fair.
- 1:16No, there is nothing I would rather be doing than sat here
- 1:19with you watching this. You charmer, honestly, I can see
- 1:24why you've got so far in life. Can we now with now the charm
- 1:29and is out of the way. You and me, We've got to have an
- 1:33arm wrestle. We're having an arm wrestle.
- 1:35That's right. I'm going to bring up the two
- 1:37words that are going to call contentious between us.
- 1:41Oh God. Nicholas Briggs.
- 1:43My hero. Now I've got a feeling you think
- 1:47I I'm not keen on Nicholas. Bridge.
- 1:50Well, all you ever do is slag. Yeah.
- 1:53Well, I mean, I did say you read in the podcast that if I don't
- 1:56like what he's doing, I will say so.
- 1:59And I that is true. And sometimes I do exaggerate it
- 2:02for theatrical effects. Of course, yeah.
- 2:04Heard my in the time lash did you?
- 2:05I did, yes. Did you get through that?
- 2:07I got through it and I immediately went and did my
- 2:10episode where I I pulled Nicholas Briggs out of the time
- 2:14lash. You pulled him out.
- 2:16I pulled him off. Oh my God, no.
- 2:18Ever since then, he's had a smile.
- 2:20Lewis. Exactly.
- 2:22What I would like to say he. Modulated my ring 0.
- 2:26That is the best. That is the best euphemism I've
- 2:30heard on hamster ever. A well modulated ring.
- 2:35Excuse me, I think this is Nicholas Briggs at his creative
- 2:42peak, and it's the early days, and I think this is where he's
- 2:45got lots of ideas and he's finally found a platform where
- 2:50he can start doing. Things a training platform.
- 2:54Exactly that. This is a really tight script.
- 2:58I think, I mean Nick Briggs has said this himself about these
- 3:03films and the autumn films and other things that they did, but
- 3:07he was a frustrated film writer. That's what he wanted to do.
- 3:10He wanted to write big sci-fi films, but just his career never
- 3:14took him in that direction. I also think he's a very
- 3:18competent director and I know he didn't direct this.
- 3:21I think he probably had a bit of a hand in this.
- 3:23I know him at Bags had a contentious relationship.
- 3:26He's acting in this, he's written it, he's there.
- 3:28I bet he had some. I reckon there were some
- 3:31conversations, yeah, about how things might look better and
- 3:34Bags is only happy to because work with them on that.
- 3:37This has a lot of the atmosphere and good creative decisions I
- 3:43think that Autumn, the first Autumn video have, and that is
- 3:47it's a small setting, it's a small group of characters, so
- 3:50they can do it on a budget. Am I just fucking direct the
- 3:54hell out of it? Well, this wasn't the first
- 3:58script he wrote. He was commissioned to do
- 4:00something else, which he described as more Blade Runner
- 4:02esque. And bill bags went we can't
- 4:05possibly make this. OK.
- 4:08They really wanted to a. Sapphire and still knock off
- 4:11instead. What this actually is is adapted
- 4:14from his Audio Visual Play Conglomerate, but.
- 4:20Oh really? What the same premise?
- 4:21It's very basically the same premise like Briggs was like, I
- 4:26wrote that four years ago, I'm not going to do it again.
- 4:29So it's more thematic, I believe.
- 4:31And I think there is a train station in it and there's some
- 4:34memory loss. He also does that in the Nowhere
- 4:37place, I think for Big Finish as well.
- 4:39Super. Atmospheric story.
- 4:42So I mean never, never waste a good idea.
- 4:45Can't. I say something a bit
- 4:47controversial. Yeah, I think Nicholas Briggs is
- 4:50at his best when he's not writing Doctor Who.
- 4:53Like I think he can write Doctor Who, Don't get me wrong.
- 4:55I I think stories like Patient 0, Blue Forgotten Planet, I
- 4:59don't know, Lucy Miller to the death, the nowhere place that
- 5:03you mentioned. Dark eyes dark.
- 5:06Maybe, but I I absolutely think he can do.
- 5:09It the Dalek generation. Of.
- 5:16Actually speechless. Best selling book.
- 5:18The Dalek Generation. With amazing good brief reviews.
- 5:21Yeah. I've totally lost my train of
- 5:26thought. You prefer him when he he's not
- 5:28writing Doctor Who. I think he can go to the generic
- 5:31Doctor Who will like of, you know, people being interrogated,
- 5:36soldiers, freighters, things like, you know, and he just, he
- 5:41can churn that stuff out again and again and again.
- 5:43The sort of Orion mode. Yeah, and there is a lot of it.
- 5:47You know, we're in dorm. You know, I could keep going.
- 5:51When he's not writing Doctor Who, he's forced to be a little
- 5:54more creative. And I know you've said this is
- 5:57sort of Doctor Who. This is in no way like any
- 5:59Doctor Who I've ever seen before.
- 6:01It's, it's got a very simple premise.
- 6:04It's got some potent imagery in it, some really great ideas.
- 6:09I don't know. I just think he's on fire here.
- 6:12And I, I think, I think he's stimulated by the fact that he's
- 6:16not writing Doctor Who. Yeah, well, as we'll see, this
- 6:20is sort of an in universe reboot for the series.
- 6:25And then over the course of the next three plays, he takes it in
- 6:28a very different way because he's like, I don't want to write
- 6:31a Doctor Who RIP off. So he does something completely
- 6:34different with the characters after this.
- 6:36But it's like, it's like Dalek Empire.
- 6:38Yeah, I think Dalek Empire, all of those series are really
- 6:42accomplished. They've got some problems, but
- 6:43they are and they're original. Yeah, because he's got his own
- 6:47characters that he's created, and that's obviously the
- 6:50passion. There's passion in it.
- 6:52He didn't create the Daleks, but the Daleks are sort of a
- 6:54ciphers, the wrong word. But they're pretty much at that
- 6:58point because their TV appearances, they were kind of
- 7:01reduced to more sort of foot soldiers.
- 7:03He's really having fun making them benevolent, evil, cunning
- 7:07creatures, and they're more cunning than they are in
- 7:10particular. Generation.
- 7:12But although more cunning than they ever are in the classic
- 7:15series of Doctor Who when he's doing the Dalek universe.
- 7:18Don't you think they're kind of his now?
- 7:19The Daleks. Yeah, pretty much.
- 7:21And I do think he writes them fantastically.
- 7:24I want someone to know a picture of Tom Baker with Terry Nation
- 7:27behind him with his hands out. Yeah, I want then someone to
- 7:30superimpose Briggs behind Terry Nation with his hands out.
- 7:36You, you remember there was an interview with Rusty Davis where
- 7:39he said he actually regrets not getting Nicholas Briggs to write
- 7:43for his first run of Doctor Who. And I think he should have.
- 7:47I think he should have got him to write a really good Darling 2
- 7:50parter. He would have written like a a
- 7:53nuts and bolts Terry Nation style story that would have just
- 7:57flown if you'd given it someone like Joe Ahern to direct.
- 8:02Yeah, absolutely. But, you know, I don't think it
- 8:04would happen now. I don't think that's the
- 8:06direction the show is going in. My, my big issue with Nicholas
- 8:10Briggs, while we're talking about it, it's just that he's
- 8:13written so much, right? So you go from audio visuals
- 8:16right up to the current day. Yeah, he's probably written 200
- 8:21stories. I think he's probably written
- 8:22the most Doctor Who out of anybody do.
- 8:24Get exhausted like you run out of ideas.
- 8:27There are glimmers. I think you sorry sorry you
- 8:31covered one I think recently. Did you do the United latest?
- 8:36Yes, but it's not out. Yeah.
- 8:37Yeah, and that was a good script, I thought.
- 8:40But he doesn't, he only probably writes 1A year now because he he
- 8:42probably, he's probably aware of this himself, that he just
- 8:44doesn't have the stories to tell within the universe.
- 8:46I think there was a point where he was writing a lot, but also
- 8:50you don't know how much of that is Doctor Who fans on the
- 8:53Internet like to go, Nick Briggs's ego, whatever.
- 8:55Maybe it was just that they didn't have scripts ready like
- 8:58any other showrunner and he just had to go and write them
- 9:00himself. We never know what happens
- 9:01beyond the scenes. We just assume.
- 9:03Yeah, it's. You know, someone throwing their
- 9:05way out. It's some sort of ego benevolent
- 9:08bastard, but actually it's probably just like we've got.
- 9:10Like the drama? Yeah, but actually, maybe they
- 9:13just had a lot of slots to fill and the other scripts weren't
- 9:15What? Look, I was a single man once.
- 9:18I had a lot of slots to fill. And I hear you did it.
- 9:21Exactly. Sometimes they don't.
- 9:23They don't call me Nicholas Briggs and the Sheets for
- 9:25nothing. Really.
- 9:27Yeah. How many assholes have you?
- 9:29Exterminated. I am the Nick Briggs of sex in
- 9:32that I could do it quite well, but nothing too adventurous.
- 9:39Not quite generic. Nuts and bolts, Nuts and bolts.
- 9:43More nuts and bolts. Well, I'll tell you what on that
- 9:48note. If the DVDs got off, the telly's
- 9:51been. I've been talking so long, let
- 9:54me try and find the title menu again, you know?
- 9:59But no, just circling back though, it's just wonderful.
- 10:03It is really wonderful to watch something from early in his
- 10:06career where he's just so stipulated by what he's doing
- 10:11and his performance in this as well.
- 10:14What I thought was terrific, and I'm going to repeat what I said
- 10:17about Colin and Nicola, I think he's wasted.
- 10:20I think there was a role for him on television.
- 10:22Agreed. I would like to see, you know,
- 10:25Nick Briggs wrote some of that Channel 5 soap opera.
- 10:29So, so he got an opportunity in television, but he hated it so
- 10:32much. But there used to be a Channel 5
- 10:34soap opera called like, it was like a family thing.
- 10:37And he wrote some episodes of that.
- 10:38I'd like to see those and see what they were like.
- 10:40Can you find them please? I'll I'll see what I can do.
- 10:43That we can call that too hot for too hot for TV.
- 10:46So count us in. Come on.
- 10:48Right. Light up your DVDs at home,
- 10:50everybody, and we're going to watch your memory alone in
- 10:5454321. Go.
- 11:01You know, the first thing I'm going to say is, yeah, no jokes.
- 11:06This is seriously fucking good. It is if you were going to check
- 11:09out one. Strange.
- 11:10Story this is they've slightly pimped this up a bit so there's
- 11:13a new logo for the stranger there in CGI look at that the.
- 11:20The stranger letters shattering all over the screen.
- 11:23There are slightly spruced up special effects here and there
- 11:26in this one, and it's a shame you can't get the original
- 11:28version on DVD sort. Of seeing a screen here POV
- 11:32flying through space. Yeah, so it's the same shot in
- 11:36the original version, but it's animated rather than CGI.
- 11:41Tasty actually isn't. It yeah, that's great.
- 11:44I, I mean, I, I genuinely thought the direction in this
- 11:47was avant-garde in places. No, no, I'm not taking the poo.
- 11:51No, no, I agree. It's like.
- 11:53He has he has the Blake 7 robot. It's not that, but it looks like
- 11:58that Judger. Fuck me.
- 11:59He makes it look like it's hovering about the place
- 12:03convincingly. OK, Oh, look at.
- 12:07That now that's the original shot.
- 12:09Yeah. Lovely shot of the station at
- 12:11night in red with the titles. Above it, it's very assignment 2
- 12:16of sapphire and steel. I can't remember anything about,
- 12:18it's all. Sapphire train platform station.
- 12:20I just remember sapphire and steel being really atmospheric
- 12:24but really fucking long. I don't think I haven't.
- 12:25Finished it long and this isn't, this is very short.
- 12:29It's 42 minutes. It doesn't waste a second.
- 12:34Is that a new special? Effect.
- 12:35Yes, Oh my. God, I saw the old one and it
- 12:39was just inside the square light.
- 12:42Now it now it films the screen. My God, we're at Market Dylan,
- 12:48so seek alternative parcels. I often do now.
- 12:52There's a naked mannequin there. More on that later.
- 12:56I love that the uncanny valley thing the the mannequins start
- 13:00turning into Nicola O'Brien and Colin Baker.
- 13:02Yeah, we've all imagined a mannequin turning into Nicola
- 13:05O'Brien from time to time. All of this stuff and it's all
- 13:08done without dialogue, so the direction has to be on point.
- 13:12Tell the story and the music. 'S yeah, I think it's no, it's
- 13:17somebody. It's Harvey Summers.
- 13:19I think the music. Harvey Summers did all the early
- 13:21the first series of Beneath's and that music was great.
- 13:24So look at that. That looks great.
- 13:27The drudge are flying and you see.
- 13:29Yeah, that's brilliant. And I think the Drudge has got
- 13:34the voice of Nicholas Briggs, hasn't it?
- 13:36He's doing a sort of quirky computer.
- 13:39Voice All the other characters in this that aren't them are
- 13:42Nicholas are Nicholas Briggs. Do you know what I this is the
- 13:47highest possible compliment I could give to this.
- 13:50I will buy the DVD of this one. Wow.
- 13:52Because I don't want to watch that shaky copy next time.
- 13:55Look at that, the mannequin has turned into Nicola O'Brien.
- 13:58'S and the the editing there was great.
- 14:03Nick Briggs. He's doing his best, John
- 14:06Partway from Inferno voice. Oh, look how she look.
- 14:11Red gloves. She's doing a sort of Ramana
- 14:13from Horns of Nylon look. And once again, she is in
- 14:16appropriate clothing. Yeah.
- 14:18Where is this a real train platform roughly?
- 14:21I don't know whether it I don't. I think the sign might be new.
- 14:23It's fake, but yeah. Everybody for the tours will be
- 14:26meeting at roughly station, yeah.
- 14:28And you'll have your pack lunch on the train and we'll get that
- 14:32down to Southampton. Oh, we could put mannequins in
- 14:35every other seat and so everyone can sit next door.
- 14:38We're seeing the outside of this steam train.
- 14:40The thing that lets it down slightly is you can tell the
- 14:42steam train stuff is daytime. A lot of us when you see the
- 14:47exterior, but a code of a a mannequin reading a paper.
- 14:52And the camera just keeps lingering over these mannequins
- 14:54in a creepy way. Drudger comes in looks so good
- 15:00the. Sound effects are fabulous as
- 15:02well. And.
- 15:04I think I think the writer has to have a lot of faith in the
- 15:07director to pull this off. And the mannequin has turned
- 15:10into Colin Baker that. Was effortless that transition.
- 15:14He's wearing a suit and a bowler hat and.
- 15:17Now, this could have been our doctor.
- 15:21We've got a great voice, Roger, isn't he?
- 15:24Tickets, please. And so we're doing the sort of
- 15:29because they've lost their memory, haven't they?
- 15:30Yeah. So nobody really knows who they
- 15:32are. They've got to figure out who
- 15:33they are and what the mystery is and why they are where they are.
- 15:37And maybe a little bit later on we'll find out what the
- 15:42estrangement programme is, but you've got all that to come,
- 15:44John. The estrangement programme
- 15:48really is it about my family. It's.
- 15:52The next three films are just a. Biography of you I've seen
- 15:54they've slapped a filter over the the steam train and it's.
- 15:58Very light in the steam train considering it's night time.
- 16:03Just I just love the idea. I mean, I'd love a Doctor Who
- 16:06story. Just sit on a train platform,
- 16:08yeah. You know, absolutely couldn't do
- 16:12it now, though. No, you'd have to have cat nuns
- 16:16in there or something like that. Why do you always go to RTDI
- 16:22like Catnam? You could have dog people.
- 16:24Oh man, Nicholas Briggs in the bowler hat, right?
- 16:28He looks like the He looks so young, doesn't he?
- 16:31And his cardboard tie. Why has his cardboard tie been
- 16:34snipped in half? Because it's an approximation,
- 16:36it's sort of going that the the guy hasn't quite got everything
- 16:39right, like his glasses putting his eye through his glasses
- 16:42because he hasn't got any lenses.
- 16:44He so just to I'm going to reveal the twist as we go.
- 16:48All right, I think it's fine. So he's a hologram isn't he?
- 16:51Of the fella in the suit? Yeah, in the basement.
- 16:54He's come here to sort of recharge and recuperate because
- 16:57he's battle damaged. And it's he's, he's straight
- 17:00from the battlefield. And trust me, we will see that
- 17:02later. It's very grim and he goes
- 17:05somewhere where he's sort of got a fantasy to be as a like a, as
- 17:10a holiday destination. I'm not sure why a train
- 17:12platform is where he wants to go.
- 17:14On normality, it's normality is craving a normal life of commute
- 17:17to work. So why are the stranger Miss
- 17:20Brown here as mannequins? But they've been pulled into it,
- 17:24although again, you'll find out more in the teller game.
- 17:28It's really, really hard to play that sort of uncanny valley,
- 17:34creepy, not quite right person without it being comical or
- 17:38pony. And it's the decision he makes
- 17:40just to or someone's made to get his make up slightly off so you
- 17:45can tell he's wearing lipstick, but it's because it's supposed
- 17:48to be sort of unreal. I actually thought he looked
- 17:51really pretty and it's my man. He's going to shag Nick Briggs.
- 17:54I probably would at this point. Yeah, I'll stick with Nicola.
- 17:58All right, well we'll both have fun then, not.
- 18:00Quite. Oh, I just.
- 18:03God, I just won the 6th Doctor and Perry in a story as simple
- 18:08as this, as atmospheric as this. And I do.
- 18:13It's right here in front of me. Very true, it is a lovely place
- 18:20to shoot now. Weirdly, this was again shot at
- 18:24weekends, but they had a break due to Colin Baker's commitments
- 18:27and came back about three or four months later to to finish
- 18:29it. You couldn't tell they've
- 18:32they've got a continuity person at this point.
- 18:35You say it's all too light in there.
- 18:37But you could say it's sort of a void outside.
- 18:39Yeah, that is very true. If the train's shooting through
- 18:42the void, yeah, he's just. And he was super Doctor Ish in
- 18:46this as well, I thought. Yeah, he he gets to do lots of
- 18:50fiddling about with wires. Later on when he goes inside the
- 18:52machine and all the wires, he's gonna sacrifice himself.
- 18:56He's wonderful. Michael quite would have liked,
- 18:59actually, an older Colin Baker playing the Doctor.
- 19:01Yeah, I think he sort of looks more like the Doctor here than
- 19:05when he had that crazy blonde hair.
- 19:07Yeah, the the crazy blonde hair was a bit of a sight this step
- 19:10I. Think, Oh no, it's not going for
- 19:11the void, no. Maybe he is.
- 19:14The train has vanished in a puff of smoke.
- 19:19So is that stock footage of the train?
- 19:20No, they hire the train as part of they're in for real.
- 19:24Well, they're in like a heritage sort of site.
- 19:26So it's not like a functioning train station.
- 19:29That ain't cheap. It's not cheap now, but perhaps
- 19:32in the 90s before people had cottoned on to how much these
- 19:35things cost. They're a little bit.
- 19:39It is very nowhere places. They do sort of wander around an
- 19:43empty train for ages, but you know, you've got a good idea.
- 19:48Why not recycle it? And it's Colin.
- 19:51Is it Colin and Nicola in that as well?
- 19:53Colin and Maggie staples. It's like the only thing that
- 19:56could be possibly better than Colin and Nicola is Colin and
- 19:59Maggie. Colin said this was the best
- 20:01script of The Stranger on. I mean, it's the best of the
- 20:05three I've seen so far. Well, it's just because it keeps
- 20:09throwing weird images at you, right?
- 20:11And odd twist and it pays it all off.
- 20:15It's atmospheric as well, isn't it?
- 20:17And just there's there's a great scenes of Colin and Nicola
- 20:21working together in this one as well in a way that the other
- 20:25two, they're sort of separated quite a bit throughout them.
- 20:28Well, I kept seeing them her dressed like that, him dressed
- 20:31like that going. Oh yes.
- 20:34Yeah, just it feels more comfortable than garish and
- 20:39tits, doesn't it? This isn't my train, she said.
- 20:45Oh, it's beautiful, that guy I fucking love.
- 20:47Story set on trains. Yeah.
- 20:49Is that a boy thing or is that just?
- 20:50No, it's a boy. It's a it's a boy thing.
- 20:52As I get older, I'm like, oh, I could get a train set.
- 20:56I want a train set. Yeah, me too.
- 20:58I think I could put it round this rug and just have a train
- 21:01going round the room, but my. Uncle used to collect have a
- 21:07train set, like a big one that you had like you made like loads
- 21:10of stuff for. And I used to love going to the
- 21:12train set shop with them because they also sold Dapple figures
- 21:16because Dapple made train train. You did?
- 21:19Yeah. You could have got another
- 21:20Bonnie. Yeah, well, I did.
- 21:23How many bonnies you got? I've got the two, that's all you
- 21:25need, but when I was younger I had a few because that.
- 21:27Got me the tetrap for Christmas. What he he knows how to please
- 21:30you. Hello, that's all I've needed in
- 21:32life. No, I got the creeping fog
- 21:34coming in. Yeah.
- 21:36And remember I said to you earlier that less is more.
- 21:40Yeah, I think this feels more expensive for being more
- 21:44contained. Yeah, because it doesn't really
- 21:46overreach at any point. There's a point later on where
- 21:51I'm I have to talk about the lighting because what's that
- 21:54fellow's name again? Dick Cursor.
- 21:56Dick, you are incredibly good in.
- 21:58This one, Would you say you love Dick?
- 22:00I mean, look at that. Just that.
- 22:02Just the the, the creeping smoke that's lit from behind.
- 22:07That's very smart. Would I say that I love Dick?
- 22:10Oh, yes. Yes.
- 22:13Especially Dick's Dick. Yeah.
- 22:16Look at this point, you're like, what the fuck is going on?
- 22:18They don't know who they are. They're getting electric shocks.
- 22:22Trains are appearing out of nowhere.
- 22:24The station looks amazing. That bizarre man in the bowler
- 22:27hat who's not quite right. Who's not the guy from Myth
- 22:30Makers I? Think you might be there He is.
- 22:35Yeah, I know what he could have had a Turner's data in next
- 22:39generation, you know. Oh.
- 22:42We got some slight data. I barely knew her.
- 22:45Well done. They're awake, Sorry.
- 22:49Oh, what's that? Oh, we've had cancellations.
- 22:51Sorry, I want to know if roughly is a real place.
- 22:58I mean, it looks like it, yeah, but I.
- 23:00Don't know whether it's the sign they've put up or whether that
- 23:02is actually a station. Over the actual one.
- 23:05When we when we do the terror game in a few weeks time, TuneIn
- 23:08and I'll have an answer. For that, oh, thank you.
- 23:11I didn't think to comment out in the book.
- 23:13Did you say the terror game was the one where it all becomes the
- 23:15police? Procedural.
- 23:16I mean, in the terror game, you've got Louise Jameson.
- 23:19Oh really? Is she playing Patricia Haggard?
- 23:22No. She's playing somebody else.
- 23:24Haggard. They should have given her a
- 23:25better surname than that. And you get Nicholas Pegg do.
- 23:30You know what this felt like to me?
- 23:32Actually, this felt to me like a really grey high concept Star
- 23:38Trek episode, 40 minutes long and mystery at the start.
- 23:41And like, it feels different because it is.
- 23:43It's more sort of English in the atmospheric than Star Trek.
- 23:47You know, great moments for the regular cast and then a top
- 23:51notch conclusion. Yeah, now I get, Yeah.
- 23:55And I think they could have done just lots like this.
- 23:57Yeah. You know, instead of Safari and
- 24:00still you could have said the stranger and Miss Brown have
- 24:03been assigned. Next time they're going to be
- 24:07think of another isolated location.
- 24:09A phone box absorb a sauna. Oh God, no.
- 24:18Sophie Aldridge back A lighthouse maybe?
- 24:21A lighthouse, like The Hobbit of Fang Rock.
- 24:24Predictable. So once we go down the stairs,
- 24:26this downstairs bit, this is all below BBC Nottingham, where Bill
- 24:30Bags was working at the time, and it's actually the underneath
- 24:34of an old brewery. Well, it's well matched because
- 24:37I really can't tell they're not in the same place.
- 24:40And why wouldn't you like, yeah, all these dummies about the
- 24:45place. Oh, they're creepy.
- 24:50Very creepy. I don't like facsimile of human
- 24:52faces. Whatever Doctor Who does masks
- 24:55that are like that. That clown in Black Orchid, that
- 24:58clown face, the period. The robots and robots are deaf.
- 25:03And they just shot mannequins, but they're just like, it's
- 25:06weird that God. Look at that shot there.
- 25:09Yeah, a lovely silhouette of Nicola Bryant.
- 25:11Just with a simple spotlight, yeah.
- 25:15That's that's what you just did. Now it's Colin that screams, not
- 25:19Nicola. Yeah, Joe.
- 25:22I would have loved to unless she wouldn't have touched it with a
- 25:25bulge pulp because she had a career.
- 25:27I would love to have seen Bonnie do one of these.
- 25:30Oh yeah? Oh yeah.
- 25:31I wonder what you do with them? Just give her like a great role
- 25:34like like Nicola gets. You could have put her in zygom.
- 25:39But to be honest, she's probably in America at this point doing
- 25:42cats or something like that, you know?
- 25:44She was like, Doctor what? Well, she says in interviews,
- 25:48like she didn't think that anybody liked her in Doctor Who,
- 25:50so she just sort of put it behind her as like an 18 month
- 25:53gig. She did, and then.
- 25:54And and whatever you think about what has been, it is nice.
- 25:59Then she's reached peace with that for a big finish in the
- 26:02latest series because her return was greeted with huge
- 26:07enthusiasm. But also you've got to remember
- 26:09the people who didn't like Doctor Who's direction towards
- 26:13the end were the vocal group and fandom at that point.
- 26:17But there are a bunch of eight-year olds watching that.
- 26:20By the time she came back were 4550 years old and were like Oh
- 26:24my God, it's my companion. Do you know what's so weird to
- 26:28me? And it's, I mean, I, I do wonder
- 26:31if Doctor Who fans didn't like the McCoy.
- 26:34This is kind of what they wanted, a return to Hinchcliffe,
- 26:37you know, atmosphere, very serious, you know, strong
- 26:42science fiction. Cos there's less cartoony, less
- 26:44comic bookie, less 2000. Ade yeah, I think it is what
- 26:48they wanted and I think this is a direct reaction or there's a
- 26:50boom mica just up the top there. I'll Bill.
- 26:52You can change this. You can CGI so many things out
- 26:55of it, but you can't get rid of the boom.
- 26:57Oh no, there we go. He cut away.
- 27:00Good man. Yeah, look at them together.
- 27:04Fabulous. What's behind the metal door?
- 27:07But think about him in that stupid coat he normally wears
- 27:10and her in her tinfoil tit costume.
- 27:13You know what I mean? Like this just looks.
- 27:17This is kind of what I wanted. Oh man, what was that
- 27:23downstairs? Fucking hear something it.
- 27:25Could be Mark Rowland's Co host of I thought I'd say too well
- 27:30for TV. I was going to make a point then
- 27:33it's totally gone on my head. It was about Bonnie Langford,
- 27:35Sophie Aldrin and Nicola Bryan, you know at the time obviously
- 27:39Sophie was greeted with huge acclaim and Bonnie was a total
- 27:43embarrassment. Wasn't.
- 27:44She well, that was Ian Levine being.
- 27:47Things have shifted though, haven't they?
- 27:49Now? Bonnie's stories, then they've
- 27:53had a huge reappraisal and her character.
- 27:57And you know, ultimately she was the one that was in the 5th, she
- 27:59was the the link to the classic series in the 50th special, so.
- 28:03It's crazy, isn't it? Is Bonnie in the war between the
- 28:06land and the sea? Oh.
- 28:07I hope so. They're all in this.
- 28:09I just want lots of her. I do think Freeman is going to
- 28:12be in that, yeah. Something tells me they added
- 28:16her to that logo. Yeah, universe.
- 28:18Logo for a reason. I might make me watch it free,
- 28:21Mahaja members of that. Oh, you're not going to watch
- 28:23that, however. No, I'll I'll watch that.
- 28:25I just. I just Sea devils so boring,
- 28:27wrote one of next year's episodes.
- 28:30I would TuneIn to see what that car crash looked like.
- 28:35And the Hazel Burrows was the main guest star.
- 28:38I mean, sign me up. I don't really like the Sea
- 28:41Devils. No, I don't either, really.
- 28:43But the story was done like the Cylorians and the Sea Devils.
- 28:47I know people love them, but I they're just not.
- 28:50They're a bit too long and a bit too shoddy around the edges.
- 28:54I don't. Know potent idea yeah and I
- 28:56think I think they do it to death there yeah.
- 28:58So then when they come back for Warriors of the Deep, they're
- 29:00just soldiers. And then, oh, that dreadful 2
- 29:04parter in Series 5, I think that basically killed it dead.
- 29:08And then when she was, you know, the great detective on Baker
- 29:11Street, what's her name? Oh, Madame Vastra.
- 29:15Yeah. Oh, that was it.
- 29:16All interesting. If they've got a new story to
- 29:18tell, but it's not, it's going to be the you've messed up our
- 29:21planet. We want it back again, just with
- 29:23pollution. Anyway, we're not here to talk
- 29:26about the war between the bland and the sea.
- 29:28What they could do is in memory alone.
- 29:31Exactly. Well, Nick Briggs almost hit the
- 29:33stranger. Would you?
- 29:34This is the one, though, I think that, well, Nick, Nick Briggs
- 29:38and Connie Baker are very good friends.
- 29:40You know he'd only do it if he was acting well.
- 29:43There's that Blake 7 robot again.
- 29:44Actually, it's a good design I think as well.
- 29:46Isn't it just a bin? It looks retro.
- 29:49Yeah, you know, but it's like a bin with bits added to it.
- 29:52Do you? Remember Metal Mickey?
- 29:53I do, yeah. Yeah, he looks a bit like that
- 29:55M321. Just the collar's starting to
- 30:01figure it out. Now I see why he's imperfect.
- 30:03I think he might be a hologram. You know Dylan.
- 30:06He might be. Oh, there we go.
- 30:08He's just buffered. I feel like that sometimes,
- 30:11yeah. Me too.
- 30:14Slightly out of step with reality.
- 30:16Usually when I start watching Steven Moffett, Doctor Who,
- 30:19yeah. Well, of course.
- 30:21Nick, he just smack Colin Baker with his brolly.
- 30:25He's like, what's that? What's that?
- 30:28You don't want to be in Sirens at time.
- 30:32Well, I mean, it's a bit like I always get these two mixed up.
- 30:36Heaven sent. The hell bent, yeah.
- 30:38Yeah, it's a bit like that. There's a mystery behind the
- 30:41door. Doesn't know what, what, where
- 30:42he's going to get there. A.
- 30:44Constantly resetting environment.
- 30:47It is done in half the time and with less money. 9/10 Less
- 30:53smugness. Wow, wow.
- 30:55There you go. And better lines.
- 30:57Wow. Oh no, I think this script is
- 31:01better. Do you really?
- 31:03Genuinely wow, this is a great script.
- 31:05He turned the corner. Well-being Briggs, yeah, I think
- 31:10he can do it, just infrequently. I'm not talking about sex now.
- 31:15I'm sure he does do it infrequently.
- 31:18I've heard he's. Quite the goer.
- 31:22What I was going to say was if they had more money, I don't
- 31:28think this would. Apart from a few special effects
- 31:30shops, I don't think this you could do this necessarily
- 31:32better. No, because if you have more
- 31:34money you'd start be adding more characters, adding monsters,
- 31:38things like that, and before you know it, it becomes something
- 31:40completely different. But it's the only one of the
- 31:42three I would say that about because they have gone for this
- 31:45very economic approach. I don't, yeah.
- 31:48I don't think more money would necessarily make this a better
- 31:51story. Agreed.
- 31:53I can't believe that floating robot I don't look great.
- 31:55I mean, is it on a string? It must be.
- 31:58It's a bit like Nomad from Star Trek.
- 31:59Do you know who Nomad is? No.
- 32:01It was wonderful. He's flying all around the
- 32:03Starship Enterprise. You can see the strings in every
- 32:06scene, right? What's going on here now?
- 32:11The colours, Trying to figure out all of the mystery, isn't
- 32:13he? Yeah.
- 32:14But you know, by the end of the story, that was one thing that
- 32:16he doesn't really figure out. He's a stranger, does he?
- 32:18No, because it's an ongoing story.
- 32:20Oh, will this happen for a reason?
- 32:22Something to do with an arc? Yes, Dylan.
- 32:27You get the real answers as to what happened to him in the
- 32:30audio play the one with Elizabeth Slayden.
- 32:34I suggest you all skip over It's too hot for TV.
- 32:37I'll talk about that one that. Happens in between breach of the
- 32:40peace and the final one. I hear that Colin is quite good
- 32:43on audio, you know. He has been known to do the odd
- 32:46big finish. That people enjoy.
- 32:49I believe he only did a couple. Yeah.
- 32:51A couple of 100, yeah. Oh I found this really creepy.
- 32:57But now we're zooming into Nick Briggs, man.
- 32:59Oh, look at his molas. Get to the dentist, Nicholas
- 33:02Briggs. The dentist.
- 33:04That's another range of spin offs from.
- 33:08The orthodontist. Oh, Colin.
- 33:15Yeah, get away from him. You don't want to look in there.
- 33:18There's a thing about the He's not a coward in this, but he's
- 33:21inquisitive, the stranger. But he is like he's, he's not
- 33:26the brave hero at this point, like because he doesn't know
- 33:29what's going on. He's a little bit more cautious,
- 33:32I'd say. He's not the shrieking caladiers
- 33:35in parts of Twin Dilemma. But like the first one, it was
- 33:39Colin really underplaying it because he's in a bad place in
- 33:43his life. The second one, it was his
- 33:45chance to sort of be almost the romantic hero, the sensual hero.
- 33:51I don't know what you want to say.
- 33:52This one is, it's like business as usual, isn't it?
- 33:55He's the improviser, He's the person that's sort of is the
- 33:58detective. This is the one I love though,
- 34:02his depiction in there. So I just loved it.
- 34:07Nicholas Brexton, some crazy eye rolling in the background he's
- 34:11doing. A really great job.
- 34:13Yeah, well, he's got to be sort of still, but automated at the
- 34:16same time. That's kind of hard to do.
- 34:22And they stagger out as well. I think they he staggers out the
- 34:25information. That's what when we're talking
- 34:28about that terrible court book before.
- 34:31Hopefully that'll come out before this.
- 34:34If not, then never mind. But I said to you, you don't
- 34:36just dump all your exposition in one moment.
- 34:40You stagger it out throughout the story.
- 34:42And he does act brilliantly. He does.
- 34:44He keeps adding bits of information.
- 34:46And then in the end, he adds the final piece, which means it all
- 34:50comes together. Yeah.
- 34:53Gosh, I'm being very. Kind you are, you love Nicola.
- 34:55Saxon to me, I think. Why?
- 34:57Don't you just fucking marry him?
- 35:01No, he doesn't want to marry me, no.
- 35:05I, I this is the one. As a kid, I watched again and
- 35:08again and again and again. I've seen this.
- 35:10I can imagine. Hundreds of times probably.
- 35:14I'm surprised you weren't more taken with sapphire and steel
- 35:16then because. I'll I'll probably watch it at
- 35:19some point. I really like the big finish
- 35:20sapphire and steel They're. Fucking.
- 35:23But there's something about that 6 episodes, like 6 episode
- 35:26format for a lot of those sapphire and steels, isn't it?
- 35:28That's just a bit like it's a lot to deal with.
- 35:31When we hit that and finish big, I'm going to tap you up for that
- 35:34because they were I will so great.
- 35:36I will pop in for those and. Then we love David Warner, don't
- 35:39we? Yeah.
- 35:39We can't say enough nice things about him.
- 35:41He's brilliant. Susanna Harker, when she's not
- 35:43having it off with Paul McCann. Yeah, she's amazing in front of
- 35:46the microphone. Really good cast, really good
- 35:49stories, really creepy. Atmospheric.
- 35:51So many little things. Type 2 shots.
- 35:53Yeah, two of them. And it's so weird because this
- 35:57is the one story where they're not the stranger.
- 36:00And yeah, they're just so great together.
- 36:05Oh. It's just creepy.
- 36:07Isn't it? Yeah.
- 36:08Stop. Stop going to his mouth like
- 36:10that. Oh, he.
- 36:12Don't often say that. It's.
- 36:17True. I think I kept thinking this
- 36:22robot was like tickets please. So you must have your tickets
- 36:25from the greatest show in the Galaxy.
- 36:26Well, he does ask for tickets at the start, doesn't he?
- 36:28Yeah. Oh, Nicholas.
- 36:33Nicky B. It's true though, like in in
- 36:36Doctor Who, the new series, I really do think he's given some
- 36:42terrific vocal performances in Dalek in Resolution.
- 36:48You know, when he gets to play Daleks that aren't Daleks.
- 36:50Yeah. Ah, this is.
- 36:53Fabulous, the big monster. So what is it?
- 36:57A war suit. Yeah, it's like, but you're sort
- 37:00of linked to it. And I think he's been linked too
- 37:03long and he's been damaged and he's just a mess.
- 37:06And it's all sort of encased in wires.
- 37:08It's a bit like the controller from Bad Wolf.
- 37:10You know, I think that's probably where they got the
- 37:12idea. From the from this.
- 37:15You can actually trace all new who ideas back to the stranger.
- 37:20But even here it takes a little while before they say that
- 37:23Nicholas Briggs is a hologram of the soldier.
- 37:30But he's the doctors, the strangers, piercing it together.
- 37:36And it's one of those scripts that is always just a little bit
- 37:39ahead of me as well. I was trying to figure all this
- 37:42out as I went along. I hate it when I get it early
- 37:45before the character and I'm going, come on, will you catch
- 37:47up? They're a bit like a Cyberman.
- 37:50He does and he's got a hand that's holding a gun that you'll
- 37:55see it when he breaks loose the, the, the thing and it, it was a
- 38:00thing you could buy in the shops.
- 38:01We had one. It was like a metal robot arm
- 38:03with a gun attached to it and they've used it here.
- 38:07Oh sorry, I thought you meant it was merchandise from there.
- 38:10No, no, no, no. It was it.
- 38:12They just bought it in Toys-R-Us or something.
- 38:15A stranger merchandise Toys R. Us you get a drudger.
- 38:19Oh. Damn Drudger would have been
- 38:21popular. One of those flat ties that Nick
- 38:23Briggs is wearing. Oh, the Drudger's been
- 38:26completely destroyed. RIP.
- 38:28Oh, it does. What is that man?
- 38:33Man The the the the legs. I think, I think it's like they
- 38:37probably got them what they did with the Cybermen and get a
- 38:40flight suit and spray it. But I suppose there is a version
- 38:45of this you could do where as a Cyberman at the heart of it that
- 38:49had regained its humanity to a certain was fighting with it and
- 38:51it would work just as well. I think the only thing that lets
- 38:54it down is the helmet. When it's moving, it looks a bit
- 38:57cumbersome. About but.
- 38:59You're sort of shooting it in slow motion.
- 39:01The the light is still great so it it works.
- 39:04Are you often let down by a helmet?
- 39:06Very rarely. And I'm like, there was this one
- 39:08guy, right? No, seriously, it was sort of
- 39:11curved up. It was very odd.
- 39:14Nah, I'm going nowhere near me, mate.
- 39:17Oh, here we go. The suit's alive.
- 39:21Oh, oh, Colin Baker does great pain.
- 39:25Oh, dear. That's what happens when you
- 39:30don't Lube up. When the Time Team did Ultimate
- 39:40Foe. And can you remember when Colin
- 39:42Baker turned up? Do you remember that in Doctor
- 39:44Magazine? And he said then I love this
- 39:47script because it's doing sort of weird atmospheric things like
- 39:51sapphire and steel, and I really wish I'd had more of this during
- 39:55my time. No wonder he loved this script.
- 39:57Absolutely. But like.
- 40:04Now, So what we missed there is there was a version with three
- 40:07of the suits where it was a little flashback, which is
- 40:09obviously just a split screen, but it, you know, they're really
- 40:11trying, they're really thinking about things.
- 40:14How this is paced? Yeah.
- 40:16How this is edited, the close-ups, the two shots and all
- 40:20of that. I mean, probe went to diet.
- 40:22It had none of this. It was just somebody with a
- 40:25camera. It was all fucking long shots in
- 40:28forests and things. It was just terrible.
- 40:32Look at Nick Briggs with his gammy burnt face.
- 40:36That's pretty good. Who's doing the make up?
- 40:38It's not old Dorka is it? I don't.
- 40:39Know who it is? Dorka nezzer or a ditch.
- 40:43Like, I mean, I can handle this, but in a minute when the face
- 40:47starts melting and they've got these awful Jelly eyes that are
- 40:50falling about the place, I mean, it's revolting.
- 40:53Oh, they love a bit of gore. Look at that.
- 40:56Sort of got blood oozing out of his mouth.
- 41:03Oh, Miss Brown. You look radiant in that light.
- 41:09Oh. There we go.
- 41:09His body's melt. His face is melting.
- 41:12I mean he's always seem to have been bulging out of his face
- 41:16now, but there is a shot in a second.
- 41:19I think it flats up at the end. Look, look, look.
- 41:23Oh crap, that is horrible it. Is.
- 41:26Horrible someone's hands in there.
- 41:28Right. I had a really nice, subtle,
- 41:34creepy skull, yeah as well. Do you think they knew they were
- 41:39on something good with this one? I reckon so.
- 41:40And they were like, all right, let's really try and make this
- 41:43work. No.
- 41:47Oh balls. Yeah, now I was getting
- 41:50confusing. This is the.
- 41:51Repair. This is the repair program.
- 41:53Oh. It's bricks again, isn't it?
- 41:59Yeah. And given a totally different
- 42:01performance again. It's very red Dwarf, isn't it at
- 42:05this point? Nicholas Briggs, I'll salute.
- 42:10You excellent. I mean.
- 42:11Finally. It had to happen when we were.
- 42:15Together. Nick Briggs has finally just
- 42:17woken up and been like he's listened to every episode of
- 42:20this fucking thing. Like you just say something
- 42:22nice. He's finally been endorsed.
- 42:27Nick, all I'll say is go listen to my Creatures of Beauty
- 42:29episode, all right? Yeah, It's our new effect.
- 42:33The No. That's that's how it wasn't the
- 42:35original. It's pretty good, isn't it?
- 42:38It reminds me of it. You know the PR from Shakedown?
- 42:44Yeah, it's all affecting it. You squint.
- 42:47You can just see Caroline Ford on the rigging.
- 42:51I always can lives in my mind. Rent freaks.
- 42:54That's the gun that we used to have.
- 42:57Oh my God. And he's wearing a cricket glove
- 42:58like the Cyberman. Those are big boots as well.
- 43:01They look like ski boots or something.
- 43:02You consider yourself fortunate as a child to have been bought
- 43:06by your pair of stranger merchandise.
- 43:08Well, exactly, yeah. Now, now, this say it's like a
- 43:12war robot, isn't it? But he's dead inside, right?
- 43:16So it's just the suit? Yeah, but I mean, we've all been
- 43:19out with people that are dead inside.
- 43:23I can't really say that about my overall, you know, the amount of
- 43:27sexy dancers. He does, yeah.
- 43:30So the, because he's dead, the suit's just sort of an autopilot
- 43:35and it thinks there's a threat, which it there is, there's the
- 43:37fog. So he's just shooting everybody.
- 43:40Collins Literally there's 2 levels through this, isn't
- 43:42there? 1 is hurrah, This is the sort of
- 43:44thing I wanted to do. 2 He wants to fucking prove himself,
- 43:48doesn't he? He knows how at this point, how
- 43:52in esteem he is held by Doctor Who found.
- 43:55But at this point as well, all these actors were doing this
- 43:58because they genuinely thought Bill Bags was going somewhere,
- 44:01right? And they're actually like they
- 44:03might be cast in a big drama that he makes for the BBC or ITV
- 44:06wonder. As somebody who has studied bill
- 44:10bags a lot and you know, a lot of behind the scenes stuff and
- 44:13you've interviewed lots of people, yeah, was was there ever
- 44:18a possibility that he would have been a mover and a shaker?
- 44:21I think there is a possibility he would have had a fairly
- 44:25decent career in soaps and doing things like the Bill and stuff
- 44:30like that. I don't.
- 44:31Feel ambitious. Though no, it's just that we're
- 44:35looking at this and it is really well done, but it's also, you
- 44:40know, it's not the most cinematic sci-fi film you've
- 44:43ever seen. I think he, I think he had a
- 44:45good eye for shots at one point or maybe it was all his lighting
- 44:49cameraman, but. I mean, you recently watched the
- 44:53latest Alien film which was extremely cinematic.
- 44:58Was it as enjoyable as this? No, but I didn't like that film
- 45:01from it wasn't the direction that was the issue for me with
- 45:03that film. So but he.
- 45:08Oh. Little Peck on the cheek.
- 45:09It's brown. So the doctor's going to get in
- 45:13the software and sort it all out.
- 45:14Sorry, the stranger. This is very doctrine now
- 45:17though, and all the wires are around his body.
- 45:21He looks a bit like Clara Oswald when she was in that Dalek in
- 45:23Asylum of the Daleks. And he's going to put everything
- 45:28in its proper place. That's it.
- 45:29Pumping dry ice in backlit. Oh no, too much dry ice now.
- 45:35Suits vanished. So everything in this proper
- 45:37place. So Miss Brown will go back to
- 45:41where she comes from, and the stranger will go to wherever he
- 45:46was headed before he hooked up with Miss Brown.
- 45:49Oh. Is this the last time we see
- 45:51her? She's gone.
- 45:52Oh no, does she live a happy life?
- 45:55Do we know? Are you all fine that?
- 45:58Oh, they do tell you. Yeah.
- 46:00Oh, is it in a big pink heart? No like.
- 46:03In the ultimate phone, you've. Got it's all to do with the
- 46:06estrangement program. Estrangement program.
- 46:10You keep enticing me with this. I can't wait to find out what
- 46:13it's all about. I mean, when Luke Malloy tuned
- 46:16into the next one, he lost the will to live.
- 46:19But I really like it so. Well, you know, I consider you a
- 46:22man of sound judgement. I do have a theory though, you
- 46:26know that I don't think that Bags was without the talent at
- 46:31this point to take on ATV show. I do wonder if his personality
- 46:37perhaps got in his way and, you know, false promises and things
- 46:42like that, that, you know, I they say a lot of it is luck in
- 46:46television, but I think you kind of have to be something that
- 46:50people want. To work with, I mean, everybody
- 46:53that worked with him, writer wise said.
- 46:54He had very weird ideas about narrative and perhaps that is
- 47:01the sort of stuff that like maybe he was given a script for
- 47:03EastEnders or the builds I take a look at there's like, well,
- 47:06I'd like to do this. And they all went no.
- 47:08Like you can make things look pretty, but.
- 47:12Oh my God that the the helmet just sprung up as the survival
- 47:16suit was strangling the stranger and.
- 47:20Squirted loads of blood. Blood all over his.
- 47:24Back and right now it's looking more like a donor kebab in
- 47:26there, going back to Nicky Briggs, Nicky B.
- 47:30It doesn't even look like a pup. It looks so like, not like an
- 47:34actual pup. No, not a kinky pup.
- 47:36But you know, there's no king in The Stranger.
- 47:38Night what? Except for Sophie Aldrin in the
- 47:41last one. That's not king.
- 47:44It's a no sex scenes coming up in the last three.
- 47:46Oh yeah, it's all heavy bumming. From now on, great.
- 47:49There is, there is, there is actually a plot that involves
- 47:51pornography in the fifth one, but it's very well done.
- 47:55Have you been? I'm not even shitting you.
- 47:58I can't wait. You can do the porno specials.
- 48:04That and Doctor Screw. It it doesn't pay too very, it
- 48:08doesn't play too much into it. This was great.
- 48:10The camera pans out, they're back as dummies again, the
- 48:14smoke's pumping in the voice over, and then it just goes to
- 48:18the credits. It wastes no time with a coder
- 48:23because the story's reached its climax.
- 48:25It's brilliant. That's really great.
- 48:27Bravo. And sometimes you have to know
- 48:30when to stop. And I think he chose the right
- 48:33boy in he did. It might be his most.
- 48:35It might be my favorite Brig script.
- 48:38It's a fucking great. Script all of his scripts.
- 48:42Oh, Alistair Lock was in there. I see.
- 48:43I told you I'd be involved in there somewhere.
- 48:46Of course. A very talented man.
- 48:47Did you do the music? No, I thought, I'm pretty sure
- 48:50that was Harvey Summers. Although maybe Harvey.
- 48:52Yeah, the poster. Harvey Summers.
- 48:54Harvey, we salute you. It was a great score.
- 48:57Thanks, Harve. Can I ask you then you can.
- 48:59Was this your favorite of all the strangers?
- 49:02Yes, it is. It remains my favorite out of
- 49:05all six and I'm always happy to revisit.
- 49:12And I would probably it's this is the one I go back to.
- 49:15I haven't watched a lot of The Strangers in a long time, but
- 49:17this one I have seen in the last few years definitely.
- 49:20And is there a reason why? Because obviously we've had
- 49:25three stories now with a stranger of Miss Brown.
- 49:29Is there a reason why we go off in another direction now?
- 49:33Nick Briggs was uncomfortable about making knock off Doctor
- 49:37Who and wanted to change it. OK, we're looking.
- 49:40T script all the rest then yeah. And Briggs and bags, we're both
- 49:46looking for showreel pieces to try and get work in proper
- 49:48telly. So they're interested in writing
- 49:50different things. And you know, it's not that it's
- 49:53not sci-fi, it's very heavily sci-fi in these next three,
- 49:57although 1 is a lot lighter on the sci-fi, but they're just
- 50:01trying to do new and interesting things and some of it works and
- 50:05some of it doesn't. And then after Air Zone Solution
- 50:08which comes after this, that's when Nicola Bryant falls out
- 50:12with bags. So there was no danger of her
- 50:14coming back. I ever and Baker does eventually
- 50:17doesn't. He, yeah, but not, not for a
- 50:19good while. And even there's a lot of it's
- 50:24not like at the end of The Stranger, he just goes, well,
- 50:27fuck this guy. There is a point where he's
- 50:29going to do an audio a little bit down later down the line and
- 50:32then doesn't do it for whatever reason.
- 50:34People really start to. I think what happens is when it
- 50:38gets to doing the audios, he starts, you know, paying a lot
- 50:42less because they're selling a lot less and then everybody's
- 50:45happy they got paid for their first releases.
- 50:48It's when it comes to the DVD releases, the downloads, sort of
- 50:54in the early naughties, when you really when these things start
- 50:56to get re. So when Keith Barnfather re put
- 51:00out all hits catalogue, he renegotiated with everybody
- 51:04involved with them a small fee like they don't sell loads to to
- 51:08say I want to sell this again in a new format.
- 51:12Legal that you have to do that. It depends on your contract.
- 51:15Or is it like a gentleman's? No, I should do that.
- 51:18I mean you should do that, but here.
- 51:23So these have been re released but they're just.
- 51:24Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 51:26OK, well I can see what people are pissed then.
- 51:28And you might or, and if it's not that he's not paying anybody
- 51:32royalties and they may not, I don't know whether there were
- 51:34royalties in the contracts or not.
- 51:35But as far as they're concerned, he's been selling these films
- 51:39and audios and stuff for many years in different formats that
- 51:43they weren't originally supposed to be released in.
- 51:45And had he just, you know, gone, gone to them and said I'm doing
- 51:48this, you'll get a few quid, I don't think anybody would think
- 51:52worse of him. Although I think I think he did
- 51:54also not pay a few people towards the end of his
- 51:57productions, but. To summarise the work that we
- 52:01have done today, I just want to ask you, what's your main take
- 52:06away from this? Obviously I know you watch these
- 52:08at the time, you haven't watched these for a while.
- 52:10Where does this sort of fall with you now, The stranger?
- 52:13I think I, I really like to believe it's Doctor Who.
- 52:18I really. But then I know where the series
- 52:20goes, and I cannot reconcile that with Doctor Who in any way,
- 52:23shape or form. You can at this point.
- 52:24Yeah, this could be, you know, a little bit of memory loss, this
- 52:28that and the other and this is Doctor Who.
- 52:31So but it just, I just think it's fascinating.
- 52:35I think it's such a like and I can't think of an example of any
- 52:39other TV shows where this has happened.
- 52:42Because when Star Wars does it, they can pump serious money into
- 52:46There's been awesome things, you know?
- 52:48But this isn't a spin off, is it?
- 52:49We call it a spin off, but this is something completely separate
- 52:52technically. And the motive for doing it is
- 52:55so. Yeah, isn't it?
- 52:56It's not to continue, Doctor Who.
- 52:58It's like you said, it's to show what we can do in this format.
- 53:01Absolutely. And I think in the back of their
- 53:03minds, although they've never actually said this, I think they
- 53:05were hoping that maybe the BBC go these are the guys we want to
- 53:09make Doctor Who, the next generation of Doctor Who.
- 53:12What would that have looked like if it had looked like that?
- 53:15Last one, yeah, that's like it. Look, this is what we can do
- 53:18with five quids. But but but science fiction was
- 53:22so out of vogue at that time in the UK.
- 53:24Like the BBC didn't want anything to do with it.
- 53:28Don't. Swallow any sick when I say that
- 53:29it needed somebody like Rusty Davis, who'd always established
- 53:32themselves to say, Do you know what I want to do?
- 53:34Science fiction. Yeah, and even when you're like,
- 53:38you look at things like crime, traveller and bugs, they're set
- 53:41in the contemporary world. And when they are towards
- 53:45science fiction, the creator's got a slap.
- 53:48On the yeah, but it's it's it's covert science fiction and I
- 53:51know Crime Traveller is about time travel, but it's very
- 53:54loosely, Yeah, very loosely. It's like sci-fi is almost a
- 53:59plot point used in those things rather than look at our new
- 54:03exciting sci-fi show. Because for some reason sci-fi
- 54:06in this U sci-fi in the UK have become a joke of Doctor Who and
- 54:10Blake Seven. Look how cheap and shit they
- 54:11were. Bugs is more like James Bond
- 54:14with computers, you know, helicopter chases and explosions
- 54:17and things. You know, my, my biggest take
- 54:20away from this was one, don't have expectations or low ones,
- 54:25because I'm really surprised actually that the highest
- 54:28government I can throw at this series is what I've said several
- 54:32times throughout this is I think Colin and Nicola had a very
- 54:38strong TV role in them, which they prove in this.
- 54:42I think Briggs could have written scripts for television.
- 54:44Absolutely. And at this point I think Bags
- 54:46could have directed television with a bit of guidance.
- 54:49Absolutely. It's good stuff.
- 54:52It is good stuff. I've had a great time revisiting
- 54:55them and I mean I'll always watching Memory alone, but I
- 54:58enjoyed the other two as well. Well, we will return, probably
- 55:01not together on this so far. We will return to the stranger.
- 55:05We will the last three soon. How?
- 55:07Exciting. I'll just say thank you for
- 55:09coming all this way. You know it.
- 55:11Was my pleasure so. Bill Bagsey with me.
- 55:13Oh, I'm always up to do a bit of Bilbo the bastard bagging.
- 55:18OK there.
