- 0:46It's that car show live from the LA Auto Show.
- 0:50Lindsay, Michael and I are joined by a friend of the show,
- 0:52Jorge Aquino of Tormenting Tarmac and we're Bronker down in
- 0:56a cubicle in the Auto Show Media Center.
- 0:59Show impressions, new car reveals, people watching and
- 1:03general automotive shooting the shit.
- 1:06It's that car show. That car show is brought to you
- 1:11by Sheffield Watches. Sheffield is the storied
- 1:13watchmaking brand that was revived a couple of years back
- 1:16by her good friend Jay Turkbus, and it's seen wild success in
- 1:19both the car and watch enthusiast communities.
- 1:22Sheffield offers a wide selection of watches, many
- 1:24inspired by the iconic designs of its 1960s dive models, most
- 1:28notably the one that Jay's appearance gave him in 1970,
- 1:31which ignited his lifelong passion for watches.
- 1:34Sheffield watches are high quality, reasonably priced and a
- 1:36great value. Sheffield has truly become the
- 1:39car guy and cargals watch of choice.
- 1:43Order your Sheffield watch at sheffieldwatches.com give them a
- 1:47follow on the gram at Sheffield under score all sport under
- 1:50score watches and tell them that car show sent you.
- 1:56Hey it's that car show live from the LA Auto Show in Los Angeles.
- 2:01I guess that's. Right.
- 2:03LA could be the Louisiana car show, right?
- 2:05That's right, that's a little different.
- 2:07Los Angeles Auto. Show Yeah, we're in a locked
- 2:10room in the Media Center, but the walls only go up about 2/3
- 2:14of the way so everyone else can hear what we're doing here.
- 2:16We're having a good time. So it's me.
- 2:18Dan had to get back to the museum.
- 2:20So Lindsays here, Michael Isasso, our our fifth beetle,
- 2:24our 4th that car show guys here and friend of the show, Jorge
- 2:28Aquino of tormenting tarmac. Hey kids, it's good to see you.
- 2:32It's like we have a sound engineered in that.
- 2:33I like this. You know so.
- 2:35That's the nicest compliment you could give me because Lord knows
- 2:37I have been doing my best to try and figure the fuck out.
- 2:40Sound, but thank you for having me.
- 2:41Swear on that car show. Sorry, where was that 45
- 2:45seconds? Sorry, sorry, sorry kids.
- 2:48Well, it's been a fun day. We just got done with some box
- 2:50lunches I got in. The most exciting part?
- 2:54What did you? Have what did you have go around
- 2:56the table here. I had a Tuscan chicken sandwich
- 2:58and some salt and vinegar chips with a delicious chocolate chip
- 3:01cookie. And now I'm capping it off with
- 3:03a truly delightful latte, which is actually giving me life.
- 3:08And that's one of the one of my favorite parts about Media Day
- 3:11is all of the treats like scattered throughout the
- 3:13Convention Center. They know what they're doing.
- 3:15You've got Sheffield Watch on too.
- 3:17I do have a Sheffield. Watch on Do you have on?
- 3:19Bright pink. I have the bright pink GT.
- 3:21How many Sheffield do you have? I think I have 9 at this point,
- 3:259. Really.
- 3:26I have quite a collection and I am dedicated to the brand and I
- 3:29love them so much. Yeah, but I think we would be
- 3:32remiss if we didn't mention our impromptu picnic lunch in the
- 3:36back of a beautiful Dodge cargo van.
- 3:38You know, thank you to Stelantis and Jeep for the wonderful box
- 3:41lunches. But yeah, we managed to find a
- 3:43little picnic spot and had our own little tailgate.
- 3:46But but nothing good happens in the back of a white van, right?
- 3:50I felt like we're up to something nefarious, you know,
- 3:51for an offload, you know, Chinese speakers or something,
- 3:55you know? For the record, all the doors
- 3:56were open so that I want to make sure that no one thinks that
- 3:59that you know. Anything untoward is.
- 4:01Happening or we were planning anything other than just a meal.
- 4:05Right, a jewel. That's right, those are in.
- 4:08Again, I don't know if you've noticed.
- 4:10Again, for the note, the van was white with 0 windows.
- 4:14Speaking of that jewel heist, our buddy RJ Munt, who works for
- 4:17Mercedes Trucks in Japan, He, he was very proud.
- 4:20He, he saw the footage, he said That's one of our trucks that
- 4:22they used and apparently the company that made the lift or
- 4:26never actually put it in an ad immediately after like talk
- 4:29about like viral marketing and all that.
- 4:31So the company made the boom or whatever that.
- 4:32Was Oh my God, yes. I heard that they had
- 4:34capitalized on the robbery of the Louvre and they were like,
- 4:37well, we're here now. Like we may as well capitalize
- 4:39on it. Yeah, Did they actually do the
- 4:41heist? And then it was just all of
- 4:43giant ruse. And so, yeah, they, they, they,
- 4:46this could all just be viral marketing.
- 4:47Can you imagine that marketing meeting?
- 4:49They're like, all right, just bear with me.
- 4:50Let me go through the whole plan before you share an opinion like
- 4:53so. The Louvre, they were all.
- 4:56The black, the blue and white blueprints, you know, very much
- 4:59like an 80s. Movie You know how we always
- 5:01talk about how our booms are super agile and quick?
- 5:04We've thought of a very unique way to demonstrate that and get
- 5:07the world's attention. So you guys wanted to hear
- 5:10something funny yesterday on my way in.
- 5:12So date of recording, today's the 20th.
- 5:14Yesterday would have been the 19th.
- 5:15So I'm driving in to LA from Phoenix.
- 5:17And so shout out to Zach Clapman of the Smokey Tire.
- 5:20He went ahead and released his second episode of this driver's
- 5:22test and whatnot. And so one of the questions that
- 5:25he's asking had to do with the first car that had been debuted
- 5:27at the Louvre. Mind you, this was hours prior
- 5:31to the Louvre being robbed that same day.
- 5:35And he had no idea. And it was hilarious.
- 5:38And I was like, that's perfect. Additionally, that week, I can't
- 5:41stress enough how much things happen in the world.
- 5:45That to me came straight out of a freaking movie.
- 5:48Like unbelievable. It was the Louvre being robbed
- 5:51and then the FBI getting the NBA players on the gambling thing
- 5:57and stuff like that. I was like, that was pretty same
- 5:59week. I was like, yo, movie scripts
- 6:01are going to be on fire these next two weeks, Tommy.
- 6:04Like it's going to be insane, they say.
- 6:06They take inspiration from real events, right?
- 6:08Hey, there you go. I was like George Clooney.
- 6:10Are you listening for Ocean's 14 bro?
- 6:13Ocean's 17 1/2. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:16Whenever we get together, I feel like we're like scheming, right?
- 6:19It's like summer camp. Whenever we get together, I feel
- 6:21like we're up to, you know, especially when the back of a
- 6:23white van, you know? I was not part of that white
- 6:26van. I'd want to be made that very
- 6:27clear. But to be fair, Ryan was calling
- 6:29him and saying, hey, we're over bringing the back of the white
- 6:31van. He did.
- 6:32Could. Be a little kid.
- 6:33I have a child. I have candy.
- 6:36That's we just write free candy on the side like that.
- 6:38Yeah, that's. This is the last time we'll be
- 6:40coming to the Elliotto Show. After this, it's the airwaves.
- 6:45Yeah, well, at least at least. And Lindsay got a chance to go
- 6:47and enjoy salt and vinegar chips, so that's all.
- 6:49That's right. So if you hear crunching, yeah.
- 6:51That's what matters. The cookies, they always have
- 6:53good cookies show Last year they had these.
- 6:56We've been talking to them ever since these frosted cookies that
- 6:58had the LA Auto Show in the frosting.
- 7:00The logo didn't have this this year, but they have some
- 7:02fantastic lemon cookies. But in any case, we all got in
- 7:05late last night except for Mr. La Sassa, who lives lives here.
- 7:09Jorge's in from Phoenix. I'm in from Denver and Lindsay
- 7:11came down from Seattle and Jorge was kind enough to pick me up in
- 7:16the legend that is the 2017 Kia Sorento from LAX.
- 7:21We're sharing a room at the Fairfield Inn.
- 7:23And where are we? Rosemead, LA.
- 7:25And Rosemead, East LA, Yeah. California.
- 7:28I looked on the map and it was like East LA.
- 7:29Yeah. So we got there.
- 7:30I was pleasantly surprised. It was very nice.
- 7:32Say Ryan. Ryan looked at me.
- 7:34He's like, well, well chosen, Sir.
- 7:36And I'm like, thank you because I was really freaking the hell
- 7:38out for about two seconds. The shower as the most powerful
- 7:42flow of any like quite the opposite of most hotels.
- 7:46You go and he can't get any right.
- 7:48So pretty hair. This thing was like a Firehouse.
- 7:49I thought I blew up my eardrum. When I turned it, it was a full
- 7:52on powerful. Yeah.
- 7:53It's like one of those, so you know that.
- 7:55Showers. Yeah, as I can say, do you know
- 7:56when you're like in a hot tub and you all of a sudden get like
- 7:58at the power like they. Jets.
- 8:01Jets. It was like that, like a.
- 8:02Drain couldn't keep up. Honestly, it really couldn't.
- 8:05And like it was it. Was blogged with someone else's
- 8:07hair, but that. Was the same.
- 8:09Detail. Yeah, Yeah, minor detail.
- 8:11Like my hair was like so pressed down South fast and I was like,
- 8:14wow, now I know what it feels like to go ahead and be someone
- 8:18who doesn't have crazy curly hair like I do.
- 8:20We. Should say this is the first
- 8:21time I've actually met Horton in person.
- 8:23Known the guy for like 3 years. He does have a tremendous head
- 8:27of curly locks. Thank you.
- 8:29It's tremendous. I.
- 8:29For 1:00 AM. Envious, but we should
- 8:32backtrack. So we got in last night and we
- 8:34went, met her, met Dan from the shows, who's back at the museum
- 8:37now. But we got a quick tour at the
- 8:39Petersons. Oh, it's been the new acid
- 8:41exhibit is fire. It is, it really is.
- 8:43It's fantastic and yeah, posted a reel and.
- 8:47You take you down on the vault. No, we never have time.
- 8:50We didn't have enough time. We had to go in there,
- 8:51literally. We'll get into that.
- 8:53Go ahead. Yeah, I was always, I'm always
- 8:55disappointed when I walk in there and the Myers Makes Cafe
- 8:57is closed. That's always a highlight.
- 8:58But I know. Because the food is
- 9:00legitimately. Yeah, yeah, it actually is.
- 9:01But it was better than the Aston Martin exhibit, the Laforza
- 9:06parked out in front. Do you all know what a Laforza?
- 9:08Is I don't. Brian was geeking.
- 9:11So when? You're a kid like all of us.
- 9:13We did this. We maybe not you because you're,
- 9:14you're young. But the three of us, I know,
- 9:17Lindsay, you're also young. Well, actually I'll do this.
- 9:19One but. I'm just, I'm just pulling the
- 9:21wool over everyone's eyes. Yeah, we used to pour over these
- 9:25magazines, right, like Rob Report, DuPont Registry or
- 9:28whatever, and they would always have these cars that like the G
- 9:32Wagon before they imported them to the States, right?
- 9:35They would came to this place in New Mexico called Europa, right?
- 9:39But another sort of just weird vehicle of the time was this
- 9:41thing called La Forza, which I think is built on an Aveco
- 9:45truck, Jassy. But then it's what's a big
- 9:48thing. It's like a Tahoe size vehicle,
- 9:50but it's, you know, it's Italian, so it's got like the
- 9:53Maserati tufted leather, the dash clock, that kind of thing.
- 9:56And I don't know if I've ever seen one in the flesh in my
- 9:59life. And sure enough, there's one
- 10:00parked in front of the museum just like the day it it rolled
- 10:04off the factory. Oh wow, floor just.
- 10:06Do you know what drives that? It's a 5 liter Ford.
- 10:10That's really it's a, it's a charge version even, didn't
- 10:13they? So they couldn't obviously
- 10:15develop their own powertrains. And this is, you know, mid late
- 10:1780s. So it was just your
- 10:19run-of-the-mill Ford GT5 leader. It may have had the old school
- 10:23Cobra GT manifold on it, but it's literally like people that
- 10:28have owned them, at least a couple of people I've known in
- 10:30LA that either worked on them or, or, you know, dealt with
- 10:33them and you're like, they'll run forever because it's pretty
- 10:36much a Ford. And a lot of the, even the
- 10:38suspension pieces, you know, there's switch gear.
- 10:41It's it's old 90s Ford stuff. The rest of it's going to fall
- 10:44apart because it's made in Italy and, and, and, and it's going to
- 10:47rust and it's going to do all the other things, you know, the
- 10:49windshields are impossible to get, etcetera, etcetera.
- 10:51But the drivetrain you could go from here to the moon on.
- 10:54I was more excited to see that than, you know, like the.
- 10:57All the stuff in the museum. Yeah, the 177 or or whatever.
- 11:00But the other interesting thing about that is it looks like a
- 11:01lot of Neva, but that someone sort of like left like the soap
- 11:05too long, like a swollen. It's just it's, it's an odd
- 11:08thing. But I just hadn't thought about
- 11:10that. Cold and yeah, you can't do.
- 11:12Anything like? A little bit a little too much
- 11:15salt the night before. I'd be curious where they found
- 11:17that one because they're getting hard because again, they rust,
- 11:19they rust out. They were hard to find.
- 11:21You see them occasionally around LA and they're usually in, you
- 11:24know, general disrepair, not just because they just they
- 11:26everything rust. You can't get seals.
- 11:28You can't, you know, but that one was BMW had A at a design
- 11:33event at the, at the Peterson last week and, and I saw it
- 11:38there, you know, saw the Lefours and I'm like, seems like really,
- 11:42really well maintained. Like who, who took care of this?
- 11:45Because it's not part of the museum's permanent collection, I
- 11:47don't believe. How many they made originally?
- 11:51Like obviously not many. I mean, there is Google, but
- 11:54we're not going to use it or give them a shout.
- 11:57Out the day. I mean, we're not going to use
- 11:58the TCS research department, right?
- 12:00Is that is that over at the museum right here?
- 12:02At the we gave them the day off because we were going to.
- 12:04Be at the show totally sense. Well, it was, it was pretty
- 12:07great to to see. And then we headed over to the
- 12:10Alfa Romeo event. Yes.
- 12:11Is that where you're going to go, Mike?
- 12:12No, no, real cool guy. I just want to say we are
- 12:14missing the point of like, that's why you go to museums,
- 12:16right? Honestly, like you get to see
- 12:17the thing you never thought you'd see in in whether it's the
- 12:21unobtainable, like of, you know, they have a McLaren F1 there and
- 12:24they do have the, the, the what, what is the new Gordon Murray?
- 12:28Oh, the S1? Oh yeah.
- 12:30Mcmurtry. No the.
- 12:31SLR the Mercedes-Benz. SLR McLaren.
- 12:34No, no the. You know about the Gordon
- 12:36Murray, the newer S1 that looks the basically the 2020 the the
- 12:39current version of what looks like in the Mercleron F1 right
- 12:42thing that. That doesn't have a drivetrain
- 12:43and you stick the steering wheel in the in the back end to steer
- 12:46it around, which is lovely. That's you haven't seen that No,
- 12:49so it doesn't the drivet train doesn't work.
- 12:51So what they do is there's a there's a small little keyhole
- 12:54in the in the little back panel and so you put it in there and
- 12:57it'll help you maneuver the car for display purposes so you can
- 13:00like drive from the back. But where I'm going with this
- 13:02looks. Like a cat's ass at the right
- 13:05angle. But going to a museum, any
- 13:07museum or cars, whatever, you get a chance to see that thing
- 13:11that's either inspiring or you've never seen before or you
- 13:15know, is just kind of an oddball.
- 13:16You're right. And that's what's beautiful
- 13:18about that place in it was. Again, I'm Needless to say
- 13:21there's probably never going to be able to Forza retrospective
- 13:23in the way that there was. The what, Martin?
- 13:26I think that could be our first event.
- 13:27Yeah. I think we need a plan like.
- 13:28Sponsored by that car. Show yeah the the unobtanium
- 13:31event. Yeah, that's a great idea.
- 13:33That's how Ryan gets him to be in there.
- 13:34That's a. Theme.
- 13:35That's a theme for a collection like we always talk about.
- 13:37Like, what would your theme be? Yeah, jokes like the unexpected
- 13:40manual collection or like we saw the white collection and then I
- 13:42think Haggerty just auctioned. Autoblog, this is for you guys.
- 13:46Whenever you decide to go ahead and make Ryan Barkey your
- 13:48respective editor in chief, right you just get ready for a
- 13:51Laforza collection coming out of straight straight out of Denver,
- 13:54Co. Just 24/7.
- 13:55So if you if you build that collection on a Laforza then
- 13:58like what comes after? Oh, you're you're that's easy.
- 14:01You're looking at a macur XKR 1 or whatever that was 4 TI 4 TI
- 14:05XK which was really just a sterling back when the remember.
- 14:09Sterling 827. Yep. 4 Door Sterling's you you.
- 14:14I mean yes you can do an LMMO too because you don't see that
- 14:16many just because those are like Ken's teeth.
- 14:19Yeah, the jewel of the collection.
- 14:21You know you're you can do AG. One at the Peterson.
- 14:23You can do AG500 cab shout out to Doug Romero.
- 14:26Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've always had a thing for
- 14:28this. And and Kendall Jenner.
- 14:30An ESO grifo one of. Those oh, yeah, yeah.
- 14:33Too many of those. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:36Oh, you know what? Shout out to the Isuzu trooper.
- 14:39Or the you know, remember the via cross?
- 14:41That's the Isuzu via Cross, which you still can find.
- 14:44But the the the trick will be they cannot come in unless it's
- 14:47the Iron Man edition. So what else goes in this Museum
- 14:50of misfit cars? I think Michael had a good idea.
- 14:53Yeah, yeah, you have the Nissan Murano cross something.
- 15:00Oh, the that that cabriole. Gabriel, that cabriole, you got
- 15:04to have a Yugo, which I did when I was in Boulder working at a
- 15:07tire store. That was our parts runner.
- 15:09Yeah. Nice.
- 15:10Bulletproof. Really.
- 15:11I kid you not. What I've heard.
- 15:12Like, the whole car's falling apart.
- 15:13The doors, cardboard doors. Yeah, the doors are going to
- 15:15fall apart. The hood's going to flap up.
- 15:16But like, we drove the heck out of that car, abused it.
- 15:19Yeah, like the Hugo actually held up and they're coming back.
- 15:22Nice, Oh. Really.
- 15:23Oh yeah? Well, I yeah, I've.
- 15:25Here in LA right now. But I there was and it wasn't.
- 15:27This is pre AI generated craziness.
- 15:29But yeah. No, I've heard that they're
- 15:31really good. And the trouble is you can't
- 15:33find parts. It's not the cars themselves
- 15:34necessarily. It's maintaining them.
- 15:36They mean they rust out like Swiss cheese but but they run.
- 15:39Huh. Yeah, Yeah.
- 15:40Well, I think that's a great idea.
- 15:41Peterson Museum. I wish we knew someone there who
- 15:43could maybe make that. We'll have to work on that,
- 15:46yeah. Yeah, well, we got, we mentioned
- 15:48the Alfa Romeo gathering last night, which was a lot of fun.
- 15:50So that was with our friends Haggerty Garage and Social in up
- 15:55in Van Nuys and yeah, 8C. Speaking of cars, you never see
- 16:00the Alpha 8C, was he? Like that car, I feel like I I
- 16:03want to be careful how I know. It's built on a 360, right?
- 16:05A Ferrari 360 I think it is. Is it because it's from?
- 16:08Anybody. Oh, no.
- 16:09So what would that be? What what does that mean about
- 16:11that? It's built on a.
- 16:12Can the average person who's really not paying attention as
- 16:14it's going down the road tell the difference between AN8C and
- 16:16A4C? Yes.
- 16:17A. 100% it's about twice the size.
- 16:19No, no. But that's my point though, if
- 16:20you don't know anything, they kind of look like similar.
- 16:22I mean, it's a beautiful. I just.
- 16:24Well, that's a piece. So I'm glad that you mentioned
- 16:26that because I know I went to their party and now I'm going to
- 16:29go ahead and shit on it. I've never thought that the AC
- 16:32is that good looking of a car. I think it's kind of a ring
- 16:34personally. That's just me.
- 16:35I. Love it.
- 16:36I'm a sucker for those alpha wheels.
- 16:38This with this, you know the the circular cutouts, you know the.
- 16:41Phone dial type the. Phone dial Yeah.
- 16:43Yeah, for those of us of a certain age who remember the
- 16:45rotoring phones, yeah. I I dig that thing.
- 16:49Ostensibly it was, I think to release a car that was released
- 16:52two years ago, but the 33 Strandale, which I think is
- 16:56built on another car, I think the Maserati MC 12.
- 16:59But hell of a thing to look at. It was gorgeous, Gorgeous
- 17:02because a lot of the people were there brought their own alphas,
- 17:06you know, it was just, it was fun.
- 17:07It's a nice space and ran into some friends, friends of the
- 17:09show. It was a good time.
- 17:11That's always fun and it's always nice.
- 17:13I mean we were talking earlier about how much we love the
- 17:15Julia's and like good. Definitely would both add.
- 17:18We would each add 1 to our garages like should the
- 17:21opportunity present itself. I think so.
- 17:23I think that, you know, that's a car that they just so this
- 17:26course they don't make anymore, but they did.
- 17:28Right, right. Well, like I always go back to,
- 17:30I had like I knew at least 2 automotive journalists in LA
- 17:33that had them as their primary cars.
- 17:35And I always say, like, that's such a metric where they get to
- 17:38drive. Yeah, so many cars all the time.
- 17:41So if it's a car they're willing to commit to for their lives,
- 17:44you know, and their daily lives, yeah, that says a lot about the
- 17:47car. Yeah, I think so.
- 17:48I mean, I've heard the same thing about GT Fours.
- 17:50Michael, when are you going to get a GT4?
- 17:52Jorge, What's? Hard pass.
- 17:54Hard pass on the GT. 4 Somebody needs to go ahead and sponsor
- 17:56the shit out of tarmac. Let me tell you that right now.
- 17:59One of the things people have talked about those, especially
- 18:01post COVID, was, you know, the death of the auto show, right?
- 18:04Yeah, the other shows going away.
- 18:05And with that, you saw the loss of the events, external events.
- 18:09It's nice this year, especially to see the events that are going
- 18:12on. Scouts here, you know, Slate is
- 18:17doing something like not only are they showing up, but they're
- 18:20also doing the external stuff, which costs money, which which
- 18:23brings people in. And so maybe there's a hope that
- 18:25the auto show isn't dead for, for not just us and having, you
- 18:29know, our dreams met, but for the young people coming in,
- 18:32They're going to do family time here this weekend and for the,
- 18:35you know, over Thanksgiving, whatever.
- 18:36So you know what as old as new again and hopefully auto shows
- 18:40are are not one of those things that go the way the dodo.
- 18:42Yeah, well, not to well, not to go ahead and do a free plug for
- 18:44you guys, but I'm guesting on your podcast, so I'm happy to do
- 18:47it for you. But you guys had a fantastic
- 18:49interview a few weeks ago with Andy.
- 18:51I'm forgetting. Steinhauser yeah, yes, of the
- 18:53auto show of. The LA Auto Show.
- 18:55And obviously, you know, he spoke so highly of wanting to go
- 18:58ahead and bring that prestige back.
- 19:00And it's funny, I didn't know what exactly to go ahead and
- 19:03expect when I came in this morning and when I had an idea.
- 19:05This is your first show. Yeah, it's supposed to be here
- 19:08last year with you guys, right? Well, we already know the story
- 19:10behind that. My point being is, you know,
- 19:12Ryan and I got a chance to go ahead and come yesterday as they
- 19:16were setting up because we went to go ahead and shout out to my
- 19:18friend Kali Moldovan, who you got a chance to meet yesterday.
- 19:20And she's working with Pure PPF here in the LAOC area.
- 19:24So I have a stand downstairs, which we're hopefully going to
- 19:26get a check chance to go check out later.
- 19:28And she brought a couple of the cars and Ryan and I are looking
- 19:30around in the setup like it was way different than than was up
- 19:35here where we are with, you know, the, the the manufacturer.
- 19:38The underground. The underground and the
- 19:40underground was sick as hell, man.
- 19:42Like we saw the low riders and stuff like that.
- 19:44That was so cool that we saw a Ferrari F8 in this ridiculous
- 19:47like spec yellow with the blue roof, with the blue seats, with
- 19:51the blue wheels. It was that full on University
- 19:55of Michigan spec, but that's what that was.
- 19:57Well now I can't then see that, but it.
- 19:59Was it really much was? And so like, I didn't when I
- 20:01came in this morning and I looked in, we went through the
- 20:04Convention Center and whatnot and took us 19 hours to find
- 20:08Lindsay, Dan and Michael. But it was really, really cool
- 20:13to go ahead and walk in and be like, oh man, yeah, this layout
- 20:16is kind of rad because it's not like anything else that you go
- 20:19to. And again, maybe it's because
- 20:21it's media day, but I do find the vibe.
- 20:23Lindsay, you and I were talking about this earlier when we
- 20:25coming over here and what not. I got this vibe of like.
- 20:28Yeah, it's business. Yeah, it's LA, but there's a
- 20:30vibrancy to it and I really, really like that.
- 20:33Yeah, yeah, it's nice. I mean, it's always nice to come
- 20:36to media day because there are like there are the nice little
- 20:39touches with the coffee stands and the refreshments and all
- 20:42that stuff. And you have a good
- 20:45concentration of the automotive media both from LA but also
- 20:48people travel like yourself and and.
- 20:51Internationally, yeah. Yeah.
- 20:52And it's, you know, and it's there.
- 20:54There's an excitement, even if auto shows are on, like they've
- 20:58been on a downswing in terms of like, manufacturers coming to
- 21:00them, there are still reveals. Like we got to see the Kia
- 21:03Telluride reveal today, the new one, you know?
- 21:06And so there's still excitement. And, you know, and it's, I
- 21:10remember coming to the auto show as a child with my grandfather.
- 21:13And then, you know, when I was in college, that was a thing to
- 21:15do with my friends. And it's still, it's one of the
- 21:18great ways to get up close to these cars.
- 21:21And that's, you know, for car people.
- 21:23That's Mecca. Yeah.
- 21:26I think it seems very vibrant. Well, but LA specifically, I
- 21:29don't know where it started, but they scheduled this around
- 21:32Thanksgiving for families and for for many, many years.
- 21:36I mean, I don't know for since the beginning, I don't I can't
- 21:38speak to that, but it's always been something that some
- 21:41families do pre Thanksgiving, post Thanksgiving as as you
- 21:44know, as a. It's a family tradition like
- 21:46Thanksgiving weekend. That's one of the things you do
- 21:48because it's a long weekend and it's fun.
- 21:49And and I, you know, at least in the past when people would come
- 21:53when they were shopping for a car and most of the
- 21:56manufacturers were here, it was a low stress way to check the
- 22:01cars out with your whole family. And like, especially if you have
- 22:03kids like that can be really stressful to go to a dealer lot.
- 22:05You feel kind of pressed and this was a way to explore and
- 22:09they wanted you to get up close and climb all over the cars and
- 22:12check them out. And you can still do that.
- 22:14It's just not as many manufacturers right now.
- 22:16But like you said, Michael, I think that may be maybe that's
- 22:19going to keep growing hopefully there.
- 22:21Are only a handful of emissions right that you know, I saw but.
- 22:26I think the list is bigger this year, yeah, I think for Ford.
- 22:30Yeah, OK. We just haven't and I heard that
- 22:32their I heard their booth is fantastic, so we need to go
- 22:35check that out after. That we'll go check that out.
- 22:37Is there anything in particular that impressed you guys?
- 22:39Like really, because you obviously you just mentioned
- 22:41Kia, I feel like the Hyundai Genesis area was actually they
- 22:45had some great stuff over there. Yeah, they had the is the magma
- 22:48that weren't. Yeah, yeah, the new magma.
- 22:50The the reveal today. I mean, that's a fantastic name.
- 22:53Can we just like? Has been used before by.
- 22:56Like I know. Sting or some magma.
- 22:58The Mustang Magma Edition. I.
- 23:02Know and then Hyundai had this like cool, like off and you
- 23:05know, I think Ryan, you said that there was like a really big
- 23:08over landing presence earlier this morning and whatnot, but
- 23:10which is cool because I also feel like that's just the vibe
- 23:13of the last couple years. Everybody's doing over landing
- 23:15stuff. But Hyundai had this right next
- 23:18to the ionic 6. They had this big off roading
- 23:21concept, which now I'm blanking on the name, but it was really
- 23:25cool. And I'm like Hyundai, if you
- 23:27guys build this, like God bless you because you guys are really
- 23:32taking it to a different level. And it's I told you this the
- 23:35other day, actually this morning when we were coming in tonight.
- 23:37And and I'm not just saying this because I own IKEA.
- 23:40I'm not and. Trying to wait, you do.
- 23:42What? No, actually.
- 23:43And it was you. You and I were having this
- 23:45conversation early this morning, Michael.
- 23:46It's his Tiguan. Yeah, that's.
- 23:50No, but in all sincerity, for anybody who thinks to
- 23:54themselves, Hyundai and Kia is one of those brands that is
- 23:59still you drive that you, you, you don't know what you're
- 24:02talking about anymore. Because I think that they're
- 24:04better than half of the manufacturers out in the world
- 24:07right now. And I'm not just saying that
- 24:09because I actually happen to own one of the ones that is older.
- 24:12So I'm talking about the new ones like we.
- 24:14Yeah. We drove.
- 24:14You weren't there, but we drove the is it the what is it the
- 24:17six? The.
- 24:18Yeah, the EV6. The GT6 EV, Yeah, the could.
- 24:22Used a little more for GT, right?
- 24:24But it was a great car. It drove as well as any of the
- 24:27other EVs really. Nice.
- 24:28Yeah. So we got to Michael and Ryan
- 24:30and I got to drive that this morning and it was.
- 24:35It caught my eye because the color is very similar to
- 24:37maritime blue, the Porsche color, which is one of my
- 24:40favorite colors. So I was already, you know,
- 24:42looking at it favorably before we got in.
- 24:44Yeah. And yeah, the interior was a
- 24:47really cool, like kind of cream and black like, which was very
- 24:51striking. And it had, you know, nice
- 24:53interior lighting. I thought the layout was very
- 24:54intuitive in the interior. It was easy to adjust all the
- 24:57things that you need to adjust before you take off, obviously.
- 25:00And I thought I had good pick up for what it's designed to do.
- 25:03And Michael and I were remarking on how much cargo space there
- 25:06actually was. So it would be cargo space.
- 25:08Yeah, actually functional cargo space.
- 25:10And I know that our vehicle host said he'd done some long road
- 25:13trips and it had been what? Was his name shout out?
- 25:15To him. John.
- 25:15John. Yeah, I.
- 25:16Think he was the best vehicle host we've had?
- 25:17Remember. John John from Maine when?
- 25:20Was the last time you met someone from Maine?
- 25:22Where is Maine again? Is that?
- 25:24Is that a Canadian province? Might as well be as maritime.
- 25:27Provinces. North America.
- 25:31No. Well.
- 25:31Jorge brings up a really good point, though.
- 25:32I think the thing that that is missing in the world by and
- 25:36large and not trying to get political or anything, is
- 25:38there's a lot of color here. Like Lindsay pointed out, this
- 25:42blue on this, on this Kia was a very attractive blue.
- 25:45But when you go out into the world, you don't see those cars
- 25:47right. They have the the Mustang GTD
- 25:51here, of course, and it's it's stunning.
- 25:53But in the corner they have a regular style.
- 25:57It's probably AV6 Mustang in such a beautiful like teal and I
- 26:01and I photographed it, you know, like on my phone and I have a a
- 26:04Samsung 24. So it's not the latest and
- 26:06greatest, but you think you get these great images through the
- 26:08phone. And honestly, it doesn't
- 26:11photograph as well as it looks in person.
- 26:13It doesn't. It doesn't do.
- 26:13It doesn't. Yeah.
- 26:14And what's nice about what you're seeing or at your point
- 26:17about what's going on is what impressed me personally is
- 26:19you're getting you're seeing color in cars again.
- 26:22They're not just map. They're not fancy map.
- 26:23Yeah. Paint jobs.
- 26:24They're not all. The blue on the ionic 6 N was
- 26:28so. Great.
- 26:28Gangster. Setup those cars look so.
- 26:31Good. It begs the question.
- 26:32And obviously they're, you know, yes, you want something to pop
- 26:34because you're, you know, an auto.
- 26:36Yeah. But.
- 26:37Can't why are why are they not showing people that more?
- 26:41I mean, you brought up the orange like get those into the
- 26:43hands of the customer. Yeah, so they get.
- 26:44Lost in a parking garage between the silver car, the black car
- 26:47and the white car at every, every mall and every, you know,
- 26:50shopping, you know, at every. Disneyland parking lot 100%.
- 26:53Yeah. Well, there was, there was a
- 26:56like it's been reported on in the last couple years like the
- 26:59decline in cars that are a color not white, silver and black
- 27:04because the cost of the pigment went up so much that the
- 27:07manufacturers just went like volume wise, we can't do it.
- 27:11And I think that's also why you've seen the rise in like
- 27:14charging for a color, the markup on that.
- 27:17But you're right. I mean, when you look back at
- 27:19like the 50s and 60s, it was these super cool, like teal and
- 27:23wire. You had these amazing, you know,
- 27:24like look at. Saying the two tones again to
- 27:26the combinations which. Is interesting.
- 27:28Well, I mean the ID buzz is an exception, but unfortunately
- 27:31they haven't sold as well. But they are an example of color
- 27:35in the modern marketplace at. Least in LA they're selling so
- 27:38poorly. I don't know if it's still a
- 27:40deal, but if you go and buy an ID Buzz they actually have an
- 27:44allotment. A dealer allowed allotment for
- 27:46you to wrap it. They'll wrap it for.
- 27:49You. Oh, that's right.
- 27:49Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because.
- 27:50Because you know, what's showing up are whites and blacks and
- 27:54silvers and people are like, I don't really love it enough to
- 27:56buy it. And they they're offering at
- 27:58least at least there was. I don't know if it's still the
- 28:00case. They're offering you money.
- 28:02You didn't get to take the money, but they're like, we'll
- 28:04wrap it in any color you want, just the dealership.
- 28:05I just have to say this. I find it very convenient that
- 28:08you and Lindsay are giving Troy more ammunition than he already
- 28:12needs. Hi, Tori.
- 28:13What's up, brother? That's for my guy.
- 28:16Yeah, sweet. That's that's a sweet
- 28:18motherfucker. Not just exterior the.
- 28:20Sweetest. I love that guy.
- 28:22I'm not. I do too.
- 28:23I know, I'm sure you do you. Call him Troy.
- 28:27Yes, it's purpose. OK, when we were on, he said
- 28:30something about Troy and. Then later I could grab my like,
- 28:33was this other man right? I'm like, do you think Tory's
- 28:36gonna get upset when he leaves about Troy?
- 28:38Oh, I hope he, I hope he knows that I do it out of love.
- 28:40Now it's not just the exterior colors too.
- 28:43There's some really great colors and interiors.
- 28:45Somehow I guess we're starting to talk about the trends of the
- 28:47show. So that's what you call this
- 28:48section like what the things we're seeing?
- 28:50Either the trends are more importantly what what should be
- 28:52pushed out more to the pub. Like we'd like to see that.
- 28:55Well, because I don't think people know about it, right?
- 28:57You know, you walk on a lot and all you see is 3 colors.
- 29:00And so if you need a car or you just want a car and, and, and
- 29:03that's what you buy. Whereas if if you had options, I
- 29:06think people would absorb more of these if they even knew about
- 29:09me. Sure, yeah.
- 29:10But that genesis, that blue. I know.
- 29:12What do you call that blue? Talk about the dark blue and the
- 29:14jeans. No, it's sort of like a dusty
- 29:17metallic well. We're on almost like powder.
- 29:21Yeah, I don't know what that one.
- 29:22Yeah, that's right. It's.
- 29:23Just like these. And then silence.
- 29:25Yeah. That's.
- 29:27Something blue. This picture something.
- 29:29Blue, nice blue, the very pleasant blue and like it's kind
- 29:32of. Blue ocean water, like I mean,
- 29:36really pretty. And I think Speaking of trends
- 29:38and color, actually we've seen a lot of blue interiors, which is
- 29:43something I remember, you know, as a child, like the the Navy
- 29:47velour interior that Cadillacs from the 80s had, which is just
- 29:51iconic, obviously. But I think we went through a
- 29:53long period of time where it was unusual to see a blue interior,
- 29:56and we've seen at least 4 on the show floor.
- 29:59Yeah, yeah, yeah, no. And the very shout out to
- 30:02Genesis. I think they're just killing it
- 30:03with some of their cars. Yeah, you mentioned the
- 30:06Hyundai's, the NSPEC cars, you know, look good.
- 30:09Even the Nissan Leafs, the the leaves or whatever.
- 30:12Whatever Michael was photographing where you made the
- 30:14comment of like, hey, they might be going broke, but they still
- 30:16know how to spec a car. I think Was it a Nissan or
- 30:19whatever that was? Oh, the fluorescent yellow one.
- 30:21Yeah, that was which was amazing, Yeah.
- 30:22Yeah. Writing so cheerful, yeah.
- 30:25It's the color and like. You know when you're running out
- 30:27of money, you have to be cheerful.
- 30:28But yes, no disrespect to Nissan, I love you.
- 30:32I don't know, I just think if people saw these cars out,
- 30:36listen, having worked at a dealer years ago and
- 30:39understanding you've got to plan ahead and you're planning for
- 30:41what people buy in your neck of the woods, etc, etc, etc.
- 30:44Yeah, there's a lot of reasons not to buy colors, but there was
- 30:47a time, a prime example is for a long time, Chevy, Chevy dealers.
- 30:51If you were high enough volume, Chevy dealer, Chevy would sell
- 30:54you cars and trucks in any array of color, like in a wide array
- 30:57of colors you want that you want so long as you bought so many of
- 31:00them might be a limited, you know, a minimum number of them
- 31:03and call it what what it is is like you.
- 31:05It's bespoke without having to be bespoke and you're not just
- 31:08offering. They could variety to people and
- 31:11make it easy for. People and it's just too easy to
- 31:13say people don't there's no uptake because they complete
- 31:15like manuals, right? Everybody's like there's not
- 31:17enough uptake on manuals to do manual transmissions anymore.
- 31:19The problem is, is that people either don't know that there's a
- 31:22manual option or they just use that as a reason.
- 31:25Lindsay, to your point about dollars and cents, you know,
- 31:29because it's just. They, well, it's chicken on the
- 31:31egg, chicken on the egg a little bit because obviously demand
- 31:34drives that too. But you're right.
- 31:35Like if you, if you get to the point where that's all the, all
- 31:38the people are offered is this, you know, 3 neutral non colors,
- 31:43then if you do that long enough, people start to forget.
- 31:46But to your point, there was a Chevy truck in the late 90s on
- 31:51the lot at the dealership near where I grew up and it was a
- 31:54single cab, step side short bed and it had the most spectacular.
- 32:00Actually, I think Ryan used a word that I like tremendous.
- 32:04It was the most tremendous paint job and I don't know the story.
- 32:07All I could guess was that it had been custom ordered, but now
- 32:09knowing that the dealers could bring them in, it was Forest
- 32:12Green and bubble gum pink. Oh, wow, with this amazing.
- 32:16I mean the stripes, it was the most.
- 32:17Intricate design or something? Yeah, I mean in the first time
- 32:21and it was prominently displayed on the lot and they had it for
- 32:24like a year sitting out there and.
- 32:26I bet they did. Right.
- 32:27I know amazing that there weren't people weren't clamoring
- 32:31for it. But again, like I think about it
- 32:33regularly. I mean, it was a tremendous pay
- 32:35job. Can I call out some hypocrisy
- 32:37real quick? And I'm I'm going to call out
- 32:39hypocrisy on my behalf, but I'm also going to call it out on the
- 32:42behavior on on the behalf of a multitude of enthusiasts.
- 32:46I think that there are a lot of people, myself included, who
- 32:51crap on manufacturers for choices they make.
- 32:55And then the only people that can go ahead and make said
- 32:57changes are to the extent the board of whatever manufacturer
- 33:02it would can be, but also the general public itself.
- 33:06I think that enthusiasts and just people who like cars to
- 33:10some extent need to do a better job of using their money better
- 33:16in terms of buying what they say that they supposedly like.
- 33:21You know what I'm saying? And the reason I say that?
- 33:23Includes colors it. Includes colors it also include
- 33:26models sure you know we had the pleasure of talking with Subaru
- 33:30north earlier today we're fans of the STI.
- 33:33You guys chose to go ahead and cut it out of the lineup Why?
- 33:37Because we thought that it sold really well, brings the IT
- 33:40brings up to the point it's like everybody who complained about
- 33:43the STI, myself included, being gone could have done something
- 33:46about it by maybe. Well, that's the thing, if they
- 33:48were selling enough of them, the car would still be around.
- 33:50You had a great point there too. There's, there's a math that
- 33:53we're not even Privy to and that's that for them to even be
- 33:56able to sell an STI, they have to sell say, 5 foresters or
- 34:01whatever, right? Carbon footprint needs to go,
- 34:03yes. So, you know, the things that we
- 34:04don't even think about, you know, Subaru had a great display
- 34:08as always. Project Midnight is here.
- 34:10Yeah, it's. Very excited about.
- 34:11That they had a yellow WRX down there, which I don't know if
- 34:14that's coming back or if that was just a one off whatever.
- 34:16That was great to see. Not sure why that ever went.
- 34:18Away I would hope WRX into the auto show then that means that
- 34:21there is a 20. I hope so A.
- 34:22Color that can be available for 20. 26 years.
- 34:25Well, but then you have. Yeah, I'm worried.
- 34:27You get a little worried sometimes because it seemed that
- 34:30they had the Yuzu edition. Isn't that AB on?
- 34:35AGR 86. It's a fruit.
- 34:37It's a fruit. It it it's stunning.
- 34:39It's it's going into production, it's like, but it's a final
- 34:41edition and it's it's called the Yuzu edition.
- 34:44It's it's really beautiful. It's really beautiful, kind of
- 34:46yellowy, whatever. But do you run into Jorge?
- 34:50To your point, do do we run into a situation where much like PTS
- 34:54on Porsche or whatever, they just get Adm to death and stuck
- 34:58in a corner? Like they don't the uptake isn't
- 35:01there to your point, because then it's either you have the
- 35:03money to buy that special thing because it's 1.
- 35:06You know, all of the charters and challengers and the last
- 35:08calls that they did and all the crazy colors and someone's got
- 35:11the one of one of one of one and they never want to drive it and
- 35:14it sits in the corner. It collects dust or they want
- 35:16$50,000 over sticker for it. And so just make them, just make
- 35:20them available. Make as very much so hurry this
- 35:23point. Make as many as you can sell,
- 35:24sell them all. Don't I don't need a plaque on
- 35:26the dash. Sell them all.
- 35:28Make them all the rainbows of the colors of the rainbow.
- 35:30And, and, and I think people would be, I think dealerships
- 35:34and manufacturers would be surprised that people will want
- 35:37their product if they make their product desirable and they make
- 35:40their product. Available that's.
- 35:42Oh my God, the pictures of the choir.
- 35:43The the biggest takeaways for me though, is I think manufacturers
- 35:46are taking chances. You know there were colors on
- 35:49forerunners, right? Also, when did a forerunner
- 35:52become a $72,000 proposition? It was bound to happen.
- 35:55I mean, my God, that's a TRD. I know you know, but I see them
- 35:58everywhere in Denver and, and in my head, I, we talked about this
- 36:01earlier, Michael, I think there's still $40,000 vehicles
- 36:03in my head, right? 40,000 vehicles for like 12.
- 36:06Years. Sure they I'm I'm sure not.
- 36:08I'm sure not five years. Ago.
- 36:11You're telling. Me 2025, but we're living in
- 36:131995. Welcome to the night.
- 36:15Yeah. Hey guys, I'm 6.
- 36:16Years old again. Some credit for the color thing
- 36:18with the Bronco and some of the retro liveries and that thing
- 36:21too. Maybe they'll start with Porsche
- 36:23though. And to your point, paint a
- 36:24sample and all that. Does that mean Porsches are
- 36:25going to go back to black and silver now?
- 36:27I don't know, you know, because I think we.
- 36:29Have to worry about that. If you look at the enthusiast
- 36:31community, I mean look at the number of people that have a
- 36:32rainbow collection of their. Own it's true, you know, did you
- 36:35see that there was a chart I think I passed around to the
- 36:37team a few weeks back that showed the numbers of paint to
- 36:40sample cars for Porsche over the years, right?
- 36:43And how it's kind of it's cyclical, right?
- 36:46Like early on it was pretty popular and then it was not
- 36:49popular at all. And then now it's blown up
- 36:51bigger than ever. But it's, I don't know.
- 36:54I don't. Maybe it's reflection of the
- 36:56times we need a little sunshine in our lives.
- 36:58I don't know. But.
- 36:59I think it's like anything, you have trends and like when it's
- 37:02new, that's the new hot thing and then people kind of get over
- 37:05saturated with it and it kind of goes back the other way.
- 37:09And then once people get a breather from it, they're like,
- 37:12hey, wait, there's all these amazing colours, you know,
- 37:14Michael's point, like. I think Porsche is a hard one to
- 37:16talk about because you know, special wishes and all the stuff
- 37:18that the average Porsche person even back in the 80s and 90s
- 37:21didn't have access to or didn't know about.
- 37:23And then now when you see some of the prices for some of these
- 37:25colours, because when you look at what or A to your point where
- 37:30our enthusiasts are putting their money, especially in the
- 37:33secondary market, you know, when you have that immolate yellow
- 37:37BMW or the you know, though the Esteril blue, you know, whatever
- 37:42what those are the cars that will demand sometimes a
- 37:45multiple, but at least a 2030 forty 50% premium.
- 37:49If conditions the same, the mileage is the same, the people
- 37:52will spend up for color in the secondary market.
- 37:54So why why wouldn't, again, back to Jorge's key point, which I
- 37:58completely agree, put our money where our mouth is as far as if
- 38:01we want this to survive, if we want these things, it's your
- 38:03local restaurant, it's your local watering hole, It's
- 38:05whatever. If you don't go in there and
- 38:07spend your money, they're not going to be around.
- 38:08And then you can't come back and say, oh Jarn, I really love.
- 38:11Yeah. Dave Barnes, see all the.
- 38:13Yeah, you can't be shocked when they go out of business.
- 38:15Where the hell have you been the last 20?
- 38:16Years that's what all these restaurant owners say when
- 38:18they're interviewed on the news right as they're you know,
- 38:20closing up the shop last day you know but it's it's absolutely
- 38:23the same mentality you know other takeaways from the from
- 38:25the auto show what do you see in like trends like what's what are
- 38:30they pushing what's. Like, this is a brief mention,
- 38:34but there's a vintage Bronco across from the Kia stand, and
- 38:37it's in an amazing teal color, so that was really fun to see.
- 38:40Yeah. Lindsay talking about a Bronco?
- 38:43Who would have thought? One thing that was an amazing
- 38:48surprise, and I think a good chunk of our audience will be
- 38:50thrilled to hear this, was when we went to the Volkswagen
- 38:54display. Yeah.
- 38:55And the Volkswagen bus that survived?
- 38:57That's right. Fire.
- 38:58Yeah, it's. Actually here.
- 38:59Super sick. It has been restored by
- 39:01Volkswagen. We knew that was.
- 39:02Happening. Yeah, I think we were.
- 39:03Going to get to see it in person.
- 39:05And it's like, what a joyful, you know, reappearance.
- 39:08If you don't know, this is the iconic van that somehow stayed
- 39:12pretty nice as the world, you know, around it was engulfed.
- 39:15So I mean, either that was, you know, one hell of a.
- 39:19I think we've all seen that picture on social media because
- 39:22especially it didn't hurt that the bus is the tradition, like
- 39:26iconic vintage, you know, bright turquoise.
- 39:28With a white yes so. It stood out against the burned
- 39:31neighborhood even more. And then honest and then in.
- 39:34Southern California, and I mean, it's just was, it was a really
- 39:37sort of iconic. Yeah, so they have a giant copy
- 39:41of that picture blown up on the poster, like on the display
- 39:44behind the bus. And then the bus itself is here
- 39:46having been restored by Volkswagen.
- 39:48So that was really cool. That's obviously.
- 39:50Yeah, that's a, that's a something old and burned is new
- 39:54again. And we got to drive the Lucid
- 39:57Gravity, which so last year, one of the things that has stuck
- 40:01with me from last year's auto show was driving the Lucid Air.
- 40:03The sedan. Yeah.
- 40:05And that was a car that was one of the few cars I've gotten in
- 40:08and just, it was like instantly fell in love with it right at
- 40:11home. It was just so delightful to
- 40:12drive and it felt intuitive and very comfortable.
- 40:16And so this year we had the chance to drive the Gravity,
- 40:18which is, I would have called it a minivan, but they were calling
- 40:21it an SUV. Yeah, I can't call it a minivan.
- 40:23No, we can't. That has no gravity.
- 40:27Like OK. Two, we will be here.
- 40:30For the rest of the day. There were more laughs, but
- 40:32we're passing around 3 microphones with four people
- 40:35just for the record. Like I promise it was a good
- 40:37joke. Just.
- 40:37Trust me. Trust me, we're going to add it
- 40:40in a laugh track. I actually think we've been
- 40:42messing. That set that up on the recorder
- 40:44if I really wanted to, yeah. And it had massaging seats,
- 40:48which I don't remember the air having.
- 40:49Maybe they just weren't on. But they were delightful.
- 40:52Not as delightful as the shower over at the Mile Hotel, but
- 40:54actually, I got you. Was borderline violent if you
- 40:58want to be like I had to prepare him so he wouldn't, you know,
- 41:00injure anything, you know, like watch for that things aiming
- 41:03when you turn that, that flow on, you know, but I really like
- 41:07that car too. And and in a way that I thought
- 41:09it was Michael, you mentioned that it seemed a little home
- 41:12brew in places, but compared to one of those early cars that we
- 41:16had driven way back when, this thing seemed really finished it.
- 41:19I don't know. I really, I dig it.
- 41:20It it's it's yeah, it's a little bit of the handcrafted this, but
- 41:27like in a good. I mean.
- 41:28Yeah, I liked it. We.
- 41:29Got to drive two of them. We were trying to see the
- 41:31different train levels, but we ended up in 2 tourings.
- 41:35Yeah, they have a grand touring here, but that one was occupied.
- 41:39You know, I really liked they had the wood grain like they've
- 41:41had in other cars, and I really liked that most of the roof is
- 41:47glass like it. Yeah.
- 41:49It made it very expansive. Yeah.
- 41:51And you know, I I think the air accelerated more quickly, but
- 41:55that makes sense given the type of.
- 41:57Car, yeah. It's still lovely to drive and
- 42:00they have a bit of a ^2 off steering wheel which I hadn't
- 42:02experienced before and I really liked.
- 42:04It, I liked it too. I didn't mind it at all.
- 42:05It just added to that sort of airiness of the interior.
- 42:08Yeah. It felt like an elevated space
- 42:10to be in. I really like the interior
- 42:12design, kind of a Scandinavian, you know, sort of like in the
- 42:15vein of Tesla, but I think elevated again, just.
- 42:18Yeah, but better. Yeah.
- 42:19And the materials were nice. And it's just.
- 42:22I really. Yeah.
- 42:23Again, is a proposition to put my hard earned money on.
- 42:27I know, but well, I mean, if there was ever a time to lease a
- 42:30lucid, it's right now. The lease deals are ridiculous
- 42:34and the best way and it I think it's AI think it's a good car.
- 42:37They they they still have some growing pains that they're going
- 42:40through and whatnot. But again, again, hypocrisy and
- 42:44not not from us just in general, just you want a better car.
- 42:48That's not to take a shot at Tesla, but this is not a shot at
- 42:51them. I'm saying you want an electric
- 42:53vehicle that's not built by Tesla, and then there's other
- 42:57options out there and then you see them and then you still
- 43:01don't go for it. And it's like the proposition is
- 43:03right there. You can get a Lucid Air at like
- 43:05$600 a month with however much down and whatnot.
- 43:07I mean, really it's. A lot of car.
- 43:09It's a lot of car because that's big.
- 43:11I mean, what was MSRP for Air Sapphire when it first came out?
- 43:14It wasn't that. It wasn't like 100.
- 43:16It was over 200. It was over 2. 100 Yeah, yeah.
- 43:19I mean it was also 1000 horsepower or something too.
- 43:22You know what, honestly, it may have been 185.
- 43:24My point being is it was definitely over 150.
- 43:26And then for you to be able to go ahead and get it on a lease
- 43:28deal at like 600 or 600 and change or whatever, no, maybe 3
- 43:32grand. Down with half the horsepower or
- 43:34whatever, I mean, still. I've driven the service, the
- 43:36service vehicle that they had over at the Phoenix location and
- 43:39it had what is equivalent of 800 horsepower.
- 43:43It's one of it's the second most fastest accelerating vehicle
- 43:46I've ever sat my ass in. It's it's compelling, you know,
- 43:50but there's so much competition. You look at the scouts that were
- 43:52right next to it and and you know, the scout is that's a good
- 43:55looking thing in my eyes. I really like the the vintage
- 43:58vibes, yet it looks modern. Am I going to go in and get a
- 44:03loose it over the Scout, for example?
- 44:05I mean, we don't know because we don't know how much those are
- 44:07going to cost, right? We're going to find out.
- 44:10Yeah, yeah, but I don't know. And that's, and that's really,
- 44:13there's so many just excellent cars right now.
- 44:15Yeah, we were kind of splitting hairs, you know, we're kind of
- 44:17like we know what does it for you, You know, getting into that
- 44:20Kia, that EV6GT after Lucid was shocking because, well, it was a
- 44:25very competent car. The the the quality of the
- 44:28plastics in the interior bits were about 3 steps below what we
- 44:32had just experienced. A Lucid you know, so.
- 44:35Tracks like if you had had to guess ahead of time you would
- 44:38have said yeah, I'm expecting the Lucid to be sure.
- 44:41What's important to you? Yeah, 1, I think, you know, we
- 44:45were commenting like, I think it was a great way to drive like
- 44:50the order to drive them and to drive them right next to each
- 44:52other or one after the other because it LED us.
- 44:54It was a very direct comparison. Yeah, yeah.
- 44:56And. You know, like Michael and I
- 44:58were looking at the cargo space, having just looked at the cargo
- 45:00space and the gravity and like you said, like the headroom in
- 45:03the Kia was much tighter. The passenger envelope, well, I
- 45:07also feel like is the. EV6 as a total?
- 45:10Is it a more? Is it a just smaller car?
- 45:12Than it is. It is.
- 45:13It is too, yeah. Yeah, so it was like the gravity
- 45:15just shrunk. Yeah, kind of tight in the back,
- 45:17Yeah. But hey, what was that?
- 45:19Honda bicycle delivery, so it's called.
- 45:22The fast port. OK, it's kind of and I am.
- 45:27Because like we said, we've given our research assistant the
- 45:29day off, so I am filling in for them.
- 45:33It's kind of scripts like a what's the like, not a rickshaw,
- 45:36it's. A rickshaw with storage in the.
- 45:39Back, yeah. It's like double, like the cargo
- 45:41box is like double the height of a rickshaw, but and it looks
- 45:45like, you know, an ice. Cream.
- 45:46It's a narrow yeah. So it is a new business venture
- 45:50focused on the last mile delivery market.
- 45:53OK. Modular electric Quadra cycle
- 45:56called the E Quad OK and it's in the F fleet as a service fast
- 46:04model and it's providing not just the vehicle, but also a
- 46:07full ecosystem including swappable batteries, cargo
- 46:10boxes, maintenance and a software platform.
- 46:13But what we all kept remarking about because their their test
- 46:17drive area was right by where we passed with the Kia.
- 46:21Yeah. And what was so interesting is
- 46:24the the body position looked like kept catching our attention
- 46:28because you sit sort of vertically.
- 46:30Like a kimbo I think is the word we've used in the past, yes.
- 46:34And the people were definitely focused down and we're not sure
- 46:38if they were looking at their feet because of the pedal
- 46:40position or if there's a. Screen very awkward.
- 46:42But yeah, a lot of people, I think part of the issue is their
- 46:47test area is. Not congested.
- 46:51It's in competition with the turning radius of the fast.
- 46:53Well, would you want to be taking any vehicle, any pedaled
- 46:56vehicle in LA traffic downtown? So I think it's more of a safety
- 46:58issue. Because I think a lot of people
- 47:00were getting hung up trying to back.
- 47:01You could do a three-point turn on this bicycle rickshaw ice.
- 47:04Cream. Yeah.
- 47:05Spotty Hollow? Yeah, you get ice cream.
- 47:06Someone getting run over is not great PR, so we're combined to
- 47:10it. What's the point of the pedals
- 47:11though? Like what is what are those
- 47:13factors? Like if it's got a powertrain
- 47:15anyway? Like is this just I don't know
- 47:17is the delivery guy looking? For at that point you're
- 47:19probably looking at cost, right? Yeah, you're probably looking at
- 47:21it. It's not fully electric, so it's
- 47:23going to cost less. So it's basically, it's
- 47:24basically like a for people that don't want to Google it and you
- 47:28don't definitely need to. It's basically like an electric
- 47:31bike with a big, big cargo box on the back.
- 47:33It's this type of stuff that we were saying earlier Peter Parker
- 47:36would have been using to deliver pizzas in Spider Man 2.
- 47:39#Marble. Hashtag haven't seen that film.
- 47:42Hashtag I love Tobey Maguire by the way.
- 47:46Can I just comment on something really quickly?
- 47:48Shout out to Genesis. Wow, thank you Genesis.
- 47:52You're very kind. They just thanked me for going
- 47:53to their stand. Nice on Instagram.
- 47:55I was going to say this is veering into like if.
- 47:57You guys? Yeah, but do you get a car?
- 47:58I thought, hey, I thought, hey, I already knew what we were
- 48:00talking about in this episode. No like.
- 48:02We heard you like the such and such.
- 48:04May we? Offer.
- 48:05Yeah, By the way, can I just comment on Los Angeles traffic
- 48:07for just one minute, because it's abysmal.
- 48:10We sailed in. What are you talking about?
- 48:12I heard you guys had an LA miracle of.
- 48:14Five in the This morning it was. Hotel in Barstow here was like
- 48:1732 minutes. No, but we were trying to go
- 48:20ahead and get the Van Nuys last night and thank God DP is the
- 48:24absolute in absolute Gent. But the amount of stuff that you
- 48:27and I saw on the way to the Peterson and on the way over to
- 48:30Van Nuys yesterday. We even go through San
- 48:32Bernardino. Dude, it was, it was, it was
- 48:34atrocious. Just the the the driving of some
- 48:37individuals. In this city, it's.
- 48:39Is it it you? Wonder how is this the sent?
- 48:43How is this the? You out of towners?
- 48:45Yeah. This is simple.
- 48:47I mean, like, really? It's like people seeing
- 48:49electricity for the first time. No, I mean, I, I've come out
- 48:52here so many different times. I've driven in the city so many
- 48:54times. But you, it makes you wonder how
- 48:56in tarnations, this is the Mecca of car culture in the United
- 48:59States when people drive as abysmally as they do, in
- 49:02particular in downtown Los Angeles.
- 49:05Like it was ridiculous. Is this like a tell me you're
- 49:08not from LA without telling? Me.
- 49:09That's really what it is. It's the.
- 49:11Aim to deliver a very engaging. That's right, yeah.
- 49:14And you know, you just people just climb your toes.
- 49:18They cross intersections. And I'm like, that's you, Why
- 49:20are you here? It's just that said, I love Lai.
- 49:24Still do call me Randy Newman, but I I always like when I when
- 49:27I come here because Ryan does not live here.
- 49:31I like Denver a lot before I move there.
- 49:33No kidding. No, LA is great and it's always
- 49:36good to be here. And I don't know how long we've
- 49:38been recording. We're at.
- 49:39I think it's about time to head to our next.
- 49:42I think, yeah, we're about 50 minutes.
- 49:44If we include both recordings, let's close.
- 49:46This out with like what is the one?
- 49:47Car that each of you have seen that that will stick with you.
- 49:51Not by the way, it doesn't even be the fanciest, the most
- 49:53expensive whatever, but like what?
- 49:55Well, what's what's the one? What's the one where you would
- 49:56take home regardless of cost, regardless of access?
- 49:59I got 2. I got to.
- 50:01It's that. That Hyundai not to go ahead and
- 50:04to get up on here and stuff like that in you guys podcast, but
- 50:07that Hyundai concept off roader thing was actually you gotta go
- 50:09check that out. Please go check it out and.
- 50:12Based. On my prior appearance on that
- 50:14car show, the ZR1X is in the building and I want my two
- 50:20friends right over here as well as you, Michael, who you are now
- 50:22my friend as well. That's up for debate.
- 50:24The days like your friends and you, by the way, do.
- 50:28You think that's? The first time I've been
- 50:29excluded, does the day end and why?
- 50:32That's the Is that the title of the show?
- 50:34Oh, thank. You guys and.
- 50:36You and teams you in the corner but does the R1.
- 50:39X By the way, I'm not recording this with.
- 50:40Them I'm in the corner while. They're at the table.
- 50:42You're in a different room. I'm such.
- 50:45An asshole for that I'm. So sorry dude, such a Dick.
- 50:49I yeah, no, I offended you. You need to cry later.
- 50:52No. So I have my therapist for.
- 50:55No, but does The R1X is here and I think.
- 50:57That it would be. I mean, it's such a rad car.
- 51:01Yeah, the wing, the wings, not quite as tall as the three Rs,
- 51:04but it's as why it is pretty. It's freaking it takes.
- 51:07Up a lot of room. And the car, it's a really cool
- 51:10spec. It's like silver with the black
- 51:13wheels. Yeah, I mean, that car ran 649
- 51:16at the Nurburgring. Dude, that thing is a real real.
- 51:18That's a that is 30. Seconds faster I think than GT4
- 51:24for example 30 seconds. 30 seconds is a 30 seconds a long
- 51:28minute. That's my biggest question
- 51:31having to now seen one. In person, you look at that
- 51:34thing, it's gorgeous. You're 100% right, Jorge.
- 51:37And this is going to be kind of a weird tangent, the Dis.
- 51:41The the calipers. You know, they're carbon
- 51:43ceramics. The calipers are Alcons, they're
- 51:45not Brembos. Oh, interesting.
- 51:47So you look in this entire building.
- 51:48There's probably. 40% of these cars and Brembo Brembo, Brembo,
- 51:53Brembo Brembo everywhere you go the aftermarket, you know
- 51:56working with O ES yeah and you and they actually say Alcon on
- 51:58them and that that's interesting to me yeah at that level cause
- 52:01by the way you walk over to the 06 that's 40 feet away and
- 52:05everything else you buy is Brembo yeah why why why that's
- 52:08what that's the kind of like little Easter egg that I kind of
- 52:11wonder I'd want to ask AGM engineer like how come you went
- 52:14with a with arguably a smaller manufacturer on your flagship
- 52:17model yeah I I will get that answer I.
- 52:21Would be curious because by the way, they even.
- 52:23Let them put, I mean, because we all know about branding, they
- 52:25let them put that it's on the it's on the caliper.
- 52:27And The funny thing is, and I said this to you guys when I was
- 52:30last. On, and I've said this for a
- 52:31long time, not even on TT, the one thing that you don't have to
- 52:34worry about on performance Corvettes of the last, let's
- 52:37call it 15 years is their brakes because they have some of the
- 52:42best braking power out of any manufacturer on the planet.
- 52:46Like they are like if there was ever one thing you didn't want
- 52:49to worry about on a Corvette, it's those brakes every time
- 52:52they had their carbon ceramics or the Steely's.
- 52:55And so I find it interesting, but it clearly has not made a
- 52:58difference in any way, shape or form that that car has its
- 53:01stopping power. Absolutely Tesla should be
- 53:05talking to GM engineers about their brakes for their plat and
- 53:08I agree and that now that's a shot they should be going ahead
- 53:11and talking to them because Chevy has the braking power
- 53:15right and what not. And just so I just find curious,
- 53:19is it kind of it was more of a curiosity.
- 53:21Than 100% just given you know what?
- 53:23Most. Vehicles have these days, right?
- 53:25Porsche obviously uses Bremos exclusively and it's not to
- 53:28throw shade at either company. It's not even about that.
- 53:30It's just it was an interesting thing out of their flagship car
- 53:33and especially actually not a like a low production or you
- 53:36know, it cost is no object at this point.
- 53:38Yeah, yeah, yeah. Why that why that that's
- 53:39probably that's the R1X. I think I told you probably.
- 53:42About $300,000 no. You had such a passion for
- 53:45stopping. Well, I'm just saying if you're
- 53:47going to go ahead if you got. Ryan is perpetual as much as
- 53:51much as we've. Ever spoke talking about?
- 53:53Brakes, I think well, I mean it's listen when you when you
- 53:56got. 1100 plus horsepower or whatever and you're running
- 54:00under 7 at the ring and this is probably the fastest North
- 54:02American car ever built. You know you would like for it
- 54:05to stop. You know this is true.
- 54:07Well, the irony is. I'm I'm misquoting?
- 54:10The the some of the facts, but you can't when you see a car go
- 54:13by when they when people talk about mods for cars, obviously
- 54:17it's wheels, right? Wheels are the first thing
- 54:18people notice. Maybe it's taller, Easy, but
- 54:20brakes. When you go to semen.
- 54:23Talk brakes is kind of they're the more expensive item, but
- 54:26sure, something that people quickly try to customize because
- 54:30they're the next noticeable thing.
- 54:31Very much so, you know, they don't care about anything else
- 54:34other than what do I look like when I'm rolling down the
- 54:36street? And if you got a big set of
- 54:37brakes, that must mean you have, you know, a bajillion horsepower
- 54:40under the hood. So it's it's it's partially a
- 54:43visual mod too. I agree.
- 54:44What are you taking away? If you can.
- 54:46No, You guys go first. I'm gonna go last.
- 54:48Okay, so I have. A It's got something really
- 54:50good. Stand up.
- 54:52Blow everybody elses choices out of the.
- 54:54Block actually going to be that Honda bike.
- 54:58Yeah. It's like they did not let me
- 54:59ride from the record. No, but if they do, we will.
- 55:01Have video of that? Yes.
- 55:03Only because we have not signed up.
- 55:04Yet. So we did have to take
- 55:08breathalyzer tests this morning, by the way.
- 55:09For for these drives, well, no, Ryan had an error he didn't
- 55:14actually pass remember she said this thing is kind of finicky.
- 55:16They had really terrible breath or.
- 55:19She's like. This is fine.
- 55:22Yeah, they've never seen a BAC so high.
- 55:24At, you know, 9:00 in the morning.
- 55:26But horseshoes and hand grenades, yeah.
- 55:29So Spark SPA. RQ has a big display and they
- 55:32worked with the Peterson to bring in some cars and I had the
- 55:36chance to, I was with Dan and I actually got to help open the
- 55:40door on the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.
- 55:43So that is the one that I take home.
- 55:47That's that's a good one guys. I I saw my baby again today.
- 55:51Did you hear a Corolla? We yes, I'm in red.
- 55:54I have. Absolutely with.
- 55:55A roof rack. The roof rack really threw me.
- 55:57Off I was talking to worry about that like that feels a little
- 56:00that's that's a bridge too far telling you man they could put
- 56:02surfboards on that was also. A bridge too far was that had an
- 56:04automatic, Yeah. But I guess that's hard to money
- 56:07shift. But it had that red, that
- 56:08beautiful red, so. That the color?
- 56:11I'm curious to see how many. Automatics, they end.
- 56:13Up selling for 25, No and maybe it's wonderful.
- 56:15I haven't driven it yet. It will, but.
- 56:17You know, I really again for the money for 30 grand, I walked
- 56:19right past the Supra. I walked.
- 56:21Can you get, I mean, is there a yeah, you can get a pay.
- 56:23Together, can you get them? That's the question here.
- 56:25Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Your point?
- 56:27Or like you know. Being able.
- 56:28To access. These.
- 56:29Cars without a bunch of because like ZR ones?
- 56:31I've already seen a handful ZR ones pop up and they're anywhere
- 56:34from 100 to 200 over stick. The dealership by my house has
- 56:38a. Couple just under 40.
- 56:39I think they have about 3839. That's perfect.
- 56:41Yeah. You know, I hope someone goes in
- 56:43and. Buys in the GR Corolla.
- 56:44You'll have more fun than GR Corolla than you will.
- 56:45In that Corvette I have a mic, Can I drop it?
- 56:49Yes, yeah, good. For it, I mean, yeah, you can.
- 56:51I mean we. We were we, we still.
- 56:53Didn't listen to you what what you had to say, but yeah, that's
- 56:55that's not you can drop it all you want, much like you.
- 56:58It's not the first time. All right, So you're going to
- 57:01end this and then we'll. Yeah.
- 57:02Michael, what you got? There will be no one.
- 57:07Who doesn't make a comment? When you roll up in a Toyota
- 57:11Crown station wagon, the one. The one here, the one.
- 57:14Here is black so. I think it's not doing services,
- 57:18but I liked it. But it has a beautiful.
- 57:20It has a. Beautiful.
- 57:20Like a like almost boss roasted. Yeah, baseball leathery.
- 57:24Colored material. The interior is gorgeous, Yeah.
- 57:27But that car, if that car was in, if they had brought that car
- 57:30out like a color, you could see. Yeah.
- 57:32Yeah. Because it's next to two others
- 57:33that are on darker color. So it kind of gets.
- 57:34Blends in. You miss, you miss kind of.
- 57:36It almost has a shooting break feel a little bit.
- 57:38You didn't know this car existed.
- 57:40I didn't. I pointed it out.
- 57:41That's my. Point.
- 57:41Yeah, no idea. And now he's on, Yeah.
- 57:44And out of anything down there? Someone First off, you're not
- 57:47going to use it in a parking lot because it's not going to look
- 57:49like anything else. And secondly, you're going to
- 57:51use the hell out of it whether you have kids or not because
- 57:53it's actually useful and it drives great.
- 57:56That's I don't know. Time and what you can drive me.
- 57:59Around in it like that'll be like I mean, that'd be.
- 58:00Wonderful. Like, why else would I buy it
- 58:02when he picks me up from LAX? Yeah.
- 58:04Exactly. So 2 Toyotas from.
- 58:07Denver a Chevy and McLaren McLaren Mercedes and that
- 58:12concept yeah, but you know I will say I.
- 58:13Hadn't seen the crown before today.
- 58:15Either yeah, and I know what you mean about in terms of like
- 58:18showing it on the show floor for maximum impact.
- 58:20I really like it in the black and I'm not typically a black
- 58:23car person, but I thought it made it look like a luxury car.
- 58:26Yeah, yeah, like it lends it. The lines lend themselves well
- 58:29to black, and I think with by the way, so did the Jetta, says
- 58:33G. Sedans that you were in the back
- 58:34of that G90 was in, but that was that was a beautiful yeah.
- 58:39That's almost like a BMW metallic.
- 58:40So I agree with you, but not sure that the jet, the Genesis
- 58:42got a shout out. Mainly because they went ahead
- 58:44and honorable mentioned, Yeah, right.
- 58:46Yeah, exactly. But I think.
- 58:48I think it was a good, you know, when you think about which where
- 58:52are you spending your most amount of time with the cars on
- 58:54the interior and that was with the 2 tone.
- 58:56You have like the beautiful kind of baseball glove, you know,
- 58:59tobacco interior. So you get some color there.
- 59:02But yeah, I think like I had the Forester like last spring and it
- 59:07was so useful and I think the the the layout is very similar.
- 59:11I think it would be so useful to have yes, if you order an Uber
- 59:15Black and that showed up yeah, I.
- 59:16Wouldn't I wouldn't be like this is this is garbage.
- 59:18It's like it's actually incredible.
- 59:20Yeah, there there's my 2 car solution.
- 59:22A GR Corolla in a crown wagon or whatever.
- 59:25Is that all-wheel drive? Because it is.
- 59:27It is a hybrid and. It's it's rain.
- 59:28I looked at it. It's a hybrid I.
- 59:30I just I. Think that is a great garage?
- 59:33Actually, right. Like right about that was it?
- 59:34Last year and the GT. 4 unique. Who needs a?
- 59:38GT4 when you get a Toyota Crown, Jorge.
- 59:40Solution plus the fun car, yeah. Anyway, I just, yeah, I think.
- 59:44Toyota's really, really killing it, Right?
- 59:46That's the car that surprised me the most.
- 59:47Yeah. Honest to God.
- 59:48Because. Again, to your point, yeah, I
- 59:50knew they had crowns, but I didn't know they had a crown
- 59:52wagon. Yeah, no, I've seen, never seen
- 59:54an ad, never seen ATV. Spot Toyota has billboards and.
- 59:58All over LA and TV ads every 5 minutes yeah not one of them
- 1:00:02filled that car yeah, not a mention.
- 1:00:04And it's actually, I would argue one of their more useful parts.
- 1:00:07True. Yeah, yeah, the application
- 1:00:09like. It's it has so.
- 1:00:10Many. Yeah, well, and there's so many,
- 1:00:12like if you have kids, you have pets.
- 1:00:13If you're hauling this stuff. Yeah, like you can fold the back
- 1:00:16seats down. It's.
- 1:00:17We're calling this episode Toyota Thon.
- 1:00:19There we are, friends. There we are.
- 1:00:20If you wrap this up. Yeah, let's go see.
