• 1:42
  Speaker 4: Today.
• 1:43
Speaker 3: What a weekend. It was heavy rain, snow, flooding watermains
• 1:46
Speaker 3: in downtown Charleston. Now we get ready for another winter store,
• 1:50
Speaker 3: but we got to get through this one first. And
• 1:51
Speaker 3: I think the weather people, with all due respect, might
• 1:54
Speaker 3: have got this one a little bit wrong this morning,
• 1:56
Speaker 3: because it's it's a lot worse than Charleston now than
• 1:58
Speaker 3: what it was like two hours ago. And so if
• 2:01
Speaker 3: you are traveling, please use caution roads or slick even
• 2:05
Speaker 3: the you know, the interstates, downtown streets, and it's it's
• 2:07
Speaker 3: still pouring right now in downtown Charleston. So that's that's
• 2:12
Speaker 3: how that goes. So some good news. It is entrepreneurship
• 2:16
Speaker 3: Entrepreneurship Week, easy for me to say in West Virginia
• 2:19
Speaker 3: Secretary is SAI. Chris Warner is going to join us
• 2:20
Speaker 3: to talk about that a little bit later on. Plus.
• 2:22
Speaker 3: Last week we spent some little time talking about this
• 2:25
Speaker 3: on the show. Has to do with the Trump administration.
• 2:28
Speaker 3: The Trump administration banned, at least from one event, members
• 2:32
Speaker 3: of the Associated Press because they would not go along
• 2:35
Speaker 3: with calling the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.
• 2:38
Speaker 3: One guy who knows a lot about it is in
• 2:41
Speaker 3: the media and services an agent of sorts. So a
• 2:44
Speaker 3: lot of folks in the media and my my quasi
• 2:46
Speaker 3: agent as well, Burke Allen of Valamedia Strategies. He's in
• 2:49
Speaker 3: the nation's capital. He's going to join us to talk
• 2:51
Speaker 3: about that a little bit later on. Plus again, some
• 2:54
Speaker 3: good news. I'm thinking about the beach. The Marshall Quarterback
• 2:58
Speaker 3: Club with Charleston is getting ready for their beach party
• 3:01
Speaker 3: coming up March first and Embassy Suitets. Robert stone Street
• 3:04
Speaker 3: from the organization is going to join us to talk
• 3:06
Speaker 3: about that. Let's go now, though, to Mayor Amy Schulder,
• 3:09
Speaker 3: Good one, Mayor, good morning, Welcome to the show.
• 3:12
  Speaker 5: Good morning, Dave.
• 3:13
Speaker 3: Thank you for being here, and I won't keep you
• 3:15
Speaker 3: any long because I know you're very, very busy. First
• 3:17
Speaker 3: of all, I know your thoughts and prayers with everyone
• 3:20
Speaker 3: in southern West Virginia. This morning, we had some flooding
• 3:23
Speaker 3: in and around the Charleston here. Of course, the Canal
• 3:25
Speaker 3: River had ed, Riverfront Park, Magic Island flooding reported as
• 3:28
Speaker 3: well in North Charleston. Before we get to that, tell
• 3:33
Speaker 3: us what was up with the Gulf of Charleston that
• 3:35
  Speaker 3: developed yesterday afternoon.
• 3:37
Speaker 5: Yeah right, well, let me echo your thoughts and prayers
• 3:41
Speaker 5: as well. And I mean it. I mean having been
• 3:44
Speaker 5: in southern West Virginia during some of our most devastating floods,
• 3:49
Speaker 5: just like you, I worked underneath some gold Dome for
• 3:52
Speaker 5: a long period of my career with Bob Wives and
• 3:56
Speaker 5: Governor Wise and Governor Tomlin. So the twenty twenty one
• 4:01
Speaker 5: or two thousand and one, two thousand and three, twenty
• 4:04
Speaker 5: and sixteen, some of the most devastating floods that we
• 4:08
Speaker 5: have seen. It's hard, it's hard to look back at
• 4:11
Speaker 5: those photos. It's hard to look to see what our
• 4:14
Speaker 5: neighbors are doing now. As a matter of fact, we
• 4:17
Speaker 5: sent out a crew. I don't know if most folks
• 4:20
Speaker 5: know this, but we have an exceptionally exceptionally and good
• 4:24
Speaker 5: for US swift water rescue teams. We sent eight of
• 4:27
Speaker 5: our swift water rescue folks to princes In to rescue
• 4:30
Speaker 5: fourteen folks from a mobile home trailer park neighborhood there
• 4:36
Speaker 5: on Saturday. And so with Chief Nicholson there and a
• 4:41
Speaker 5: lot of our folks, they just did an amazing, amazing job.
• 4:44
Speaker 5: So you know, our eyes are on them and certainly
• 4:48
Speaker 5: we have been in contact to see what can we do.
• 4:51
Speaker 5: So that's first and foremost and most important. When you
• 4:54
Speaker 5: have life issues, those are always priority. So Capitol Street,
• 4:59
Speaker 5: let me, let me get back to Capitol Street and
• 5:02
Speaker 5: I'll talk about our local issues, some of our local issues.
• 5:04
Speaker 5: But Capitol Street. Yesterday there was a what we believe
• 5:07
Speaker 5: is to be a water line burst West Virginia American water.
• 5:13
Speaker 5: That line burst on Capital Capital and Marshington still don't
• 5:17
Speaker 5: know why it bursts, but it was we believe a
• 5:20
Speaker 5: twelve inch water main, so that's a lot a lot
• 5:22
Speaker 5: of water days and that slopes back downwards towards Capital
• 5:27
Speaker 5: so it put more water out than the drains could take. So,
• 5:35
Speaker 5: you know, with the snow, Mother nature, she's playing with us.
• 5:38
Speaker 5: As you said, she's playing with us again this morning.
• 5:41
Speaker 5: So planning of the sidewalks in the streets, yes, it
• 5:45
Speaker 5: is important for us to do that. But we have
• 5:48
Speaker 5: crews out saulting and scraping right now. You know, yesterday
• 5:54
Speaker 5: we had twenty seven crew members out in different parts
• 5:58
Speaker 5: of the city just dealing, you know, for everything from
• 6:01
Speaker 5: back hose to our great alls. Those are those big
• 6:04
Speaker 5: pieces of equipment day that you see if people don't
• 6:06
Speaker 5: know what those big arms you know, you know, trying
• 6:09
Speaker 5: to capture as much debris and getting them out of
• 6:14
Speaker 5: getting the amount of streams and creeks. But you know,
• 6:19
Speaker 5: we'll get to Capitol Street tonight. We have two folks
• 6:22
Speaker 5: that are coming in, so you know, when you get
• 6:24
Speaker 5: home tonight, stay home. We'd like to get some of
• 6:27
Speaker 5: this done. Hopefully the snow will be melted off. Uh,
• 6:30
Speaker 5: so you'll see and hear those folks doing that. Tonight
• 6:35
Speaker 5: and our storm debris will continue to clean up. We
• 6:39
Speaker 5: had some issues on Hannah Drive and Sugar Creek, Grant,
• 6:43
Speaker 5: Sixth Avenue, Vine Elm, you know, places in which we
• 6:46
Speaker 5: normally get flooding and some power outages. Not as massive
• 6:52
Speaker 5: again as our neighboring neighboring friends, but you know it is.
• 6:58
Speaker 5: When my son Joseph was born on the first day
• 7:02
Speaker 5: of spring in March, I cannot wait for the first
• 7:05
Speaker 5: day of spring to come. Spring does bring rain, though,
• 7:08
Speaker 5: I will remind everyone, but it has been a tough,
• 7:11
Speaker 5: tough year, and I just I want to say thank
• 7:14
Speaker 5: you to a couple of folks. Number one, the media
• 7:17
Speaker 5: for keeping everybody alert and factually giving us facts because
• 7:21
Speaker 5: that's what we want. Number Two for the folks who
• 7:24
Speaker 5: are working these very long and by the way, really
• 7:28
Speaker 5: dangerous jobs. It's not just our swift water rescue team.
• 7:32
Speaker 5: I have been out many a day in assault truck
• 7:35
Speaker 5: teetering on a hillside. It's not pleasant day. It's not
• 7:40
Speaker 5: it's not pleasant, and so they're doing it. They do
• 7:43
Speaker 5: it with gusto. They take pride in their jobs, and
• 7:45
Speaker 5: I promise you they're working as hard and as fast
• 7:48
Speaker 5: as they possibly can, so I want to do that.
• 7:52
Speaker 5: And then also to the folks who want to help
• 7:55
Speaker 5: and want to give. You know, I've already received so
• 7:59
Speaker 5: many calls and text this morning.
• 8:00
Speaker 6: What do we do to help?
• 8:02
Speaker 5: Our friends were on standby with our teams and our equipment.
• 8:05
Speaker 5: Obviously we're ready to jump in and help. But if
• 8:09
Speaker 5: you'd like to jump in and help. I always tell
• 8:11
Speaker 5: people my good friend and your good friend Dave Margaret
• 8:15
Speaker 5: O'Neill with United Way, Boy, you can't go wrong helping
• 8:20
Speaker 5: them and giving to them, or of course Red Cross
• 8:22
Speaker 5: of West Virginia, David all right, so.
• 8:25
Speaker 3: Then you're absolutely right about that. We're talking to me,
• 8:27
Speaker 3: Amy Goodwin. What about the with and I know the
• 8:30
Speaker 3: investigation or you know you're looking into the reason for
• 8:33
Speaker 3: the water main break in Charleston yesterday we all saw
• 8:35
Speaker 3: that video County Commissioner Ben Selango. You know, it's kind
• 8:38
Speaker 3: of gone viral with his video that he did yesterday.
• 8:41
Speaker 3: I shared it on my page as well as did
• 8:43
Speaker 3: like ten thousand other people. What about damage just to
• 8:46
Speaker 3: the businesses that were affected by that?
• 8:48
  Speaker 4: Is it?
• 8:48
Speaker 3: Do we know what kind of damage is that those
• 8:50
Speaker 3: businesses incurage? If any Yeah, I think.
• 8:53
Speaker 5: It's too early to tell. I mean, we're getting some
• 8:55
Speaker 5: reports in as you would as you would imagine none
• 8:58
Speaker 5: at all, and some in the basements, and some who
• 9:02
Speaker 5: have reached their front doorsteps. So those assessments are ongoing,
• 9:06
Speaker 5: and certainly we're going to be keeping a close eye
• 9:09
Speaker 5: on that as well, and going to be doing a
• 9:12
Speaker 5: full debrief and an assessment of what happened, how we
• 9:16
Speaker 5: can make sure that things like this don't happen again,
• 9:20
Speaker 5: and certainly our cooperation as well with our utilities. I
• 9:24
Speaker 5: will say this about our guys and gals who work
• 9:27
Speaker 5: for the city. We sprung into action and certainly did
• 9:31
Speaker 5: a great job communicating and being there for everyone.
• 9:34
Speaker 6: Look did our job.
• 9:35
Speaker 5: You pay us to do that, to be there as
• 9:39
Speaker 5: quickly and as safely as we possibly can.
• 9:41
  Speaker 6: But those.
• 9:43
Speaker 5: Assessments will be ongoing, all right.
• 9:45
Speaker 3: Mayor appreciate it, get back after it, Go get a
• 9:47
Speaker 3: shovel and we'll talk again soon.
• 9:49
Speaker 5: Thanks a lot, Dave, Thank you, appreciate y'all.

Speaker 3: the president of the organization. He joins us. Now, I,

• 10:45
  Speaker 3: think I don't know what. I don't know what's wrong
• 10:47
  Speaker 3: with him.
• 10:47
Speaker 7: I'm questioning my decision to j this.
• 10:50
Speaker 3: I was gonna say, now we're not Djane, you have
• 10:53
  Speaker 3: a DJ we're mc Ingyes, it's a big difference, so
• 10:55
Speaker 3: that's okay. It's a big price. Yeah, big price difference.
• 10:58
Speaker 3: Pretty much. You you know, you give us food and
• 11:00
Speaker 3: beer and we're there. That's pretty much all you have
• 11:01
Speaker 3: to do for us. So explain what the Marshall Quarterback
• 11:04
Speaker 3: Club a Charleston is, Robert Sure.
• 11:06
Speaker 7: We're a booster club for the Big Green Scholarship Foundation
• 11:09
Speaker 7: and we raise money for the athletic programs at Marshall,
• 11:13
Speaker 7: primarily the football program.
• 11:15
Speaker 3: Since we're called the Quarterback Club, So this is one.
• 11:17
Speaker 7: Of our annual events. We in the past have done
• 11:20
Speaker 7: a Valentine's themed event for several years, but we decided
• 11:23
Speaker 7: this year we're going to shake it up a little
• 11:25
Speaker 7: bit and have a beach party to help welcome our
• 11:28
Speaker 7: new head coach, Tony Gibson and his staff to Huntington.
• 11:31
Speaker 3: And tickets are available for individuals or couples, or you
• 11:35
Speaker 3: want to buy a table for your business, you can
• 11:37
Speaker 3: do all that right.
• 11:38
Speaker 7: Yes, there are table sponsorships available a start at two
• 11:41
Speaker 7: thousand dollars. That gives you ten seats, complimentary beer and wine,
• 11:46
Speaker 7: which means all you can stomach for the evening and
• 11:49
Speaker 7: individual tickets are available for one hundred and seventy five
• 11:52
  Speaker 7: dollars each.
• 11:54
Speaker 3: And as you said, Marshall football coach Tony Gibson making
• 11:57
Speaker 3: a triumphant return to the out in state. He's gonna
• 12:01
Speaker 3: be there. It's gonna be a great night.
• 12:02
Speaker 7: Yes, you have Boone County native Tony Gibson. We're very
• 12:07
Speaker 7: excited to have him here. He'll be at the event,
• 12:09
Speaker 7: as will his senior staff.
• 12:12
Speaker 3: And animal and I will be serving as the MC.
• 12:15
Speaker 3: What kind of fun can we get into? Well, since
• 12:18
Speaker 3: they canceled the Valentine's staff, my idea was to have,
• 12:21
Speaker 3: you know, Valentine's State massacre.
• 12:23
  Speaker 4: Nobody liked that.
• 12:23
Speaker 3: So we're doing a beach party. I mean, I got it,
• 12:25
Speaker 3: and which is fine. No speedos, State, no speedos, damn it, man,
• 12:30
Speaker 3: No no speedos. But you know by the fact that
• 12:32
Speaker 3: it's going to be a beach party, Robert, it means,
• 12:34
Speaker 3: you know, people like to get all dressed up this time.
• 12:36
Speaker 3: They don't have to they but they're on their Hawaiian
• 12:38
Speaker 3: shirt and go. It is beach attire whatever that means
• 12:41
Speaker 3: to you. Not that kind of beach team, and where
• 12:45
Speaker 3: can people get tickets and learn more about the event.
• 12:47
Speaker 3: I know I've getten up post on my social media,
• 12:49
Speaker 3: but where's the best place to get tickets or to
• 12:51
  Speaker 3: learn more.
• 12:52
Speaker 7: The Marshall Quarterback Club has a Facebook page. You can
• 12:55
Speaker 7: go there or you can go to herd zone dot
• 12:56
Speaker 7: com under tickets there's special events and you can buy
• 12:59
Speaker 7: your ticket. It's online there or call the Big Green.
• 13:02
Speaker 3: And as far as I mean, you're gonna have drink specials.
• 13:05
Speaker 3: You're gonna have beach you know, everything's beach themed.
• 13:07
Speaker 7: Right, Everything is beach themed, be a tropical menu. We're
• 13:11
Speaker 7: gonna have special boat drinks that come with your with
• 13:15
Speaker 7: your tickets, and we'll have Will Almer, former Marshall offensive lineman,
• 13:20
Speaker 7: will be there to play the guitar for the crowd,
• 13:25
Speaker 7: as well as a professional djail not us, a.
• 13:27
Speaker 3: Professional that's going to tackle somebody in the crowd, you know.
• 13:31
Speaker 3: And it's there's a lot of excitement surrounding the Marshall
• 13:34
Speaker 3: football team this year. There are a lot of new
• 13:37
Speaker 3: faces there and again the return of a West Virginia
• 13:39
  Speaker 3: guide a coach.
• 13:40
Speaker 7: Yeah, we're the recruiting class. There's sixty one new players
• 13:43
Speaker 7: coming in high ranked number two ranked by rivals and
• 13:47
Speaker 7: several West Virginia natives. Koy Fagan the quarterback from Martinsburg.
• 13:52
Speaker 7: He is one of the signees for Marshall University and
• 13:55
Speaker 7: some other local players as well.
• 13:57
Speaker 3: All right, now again, where can people get more information?
• 13:59
Speaker 3: And the eight is March first, Saturday night at Embassy Suite.
• 14:03
Speaker 3: Come home, come hang out with me and Steve. If
• 14:05
Speaker 3: nothing else right, Yes, go to herd zone dot com
• 14:07
Speaker 3: to get your tickets. Right and sponsorships are available. So again,
• 14:11
Speaker 3: we've got businesses that listen to this show and they're thinking,
• 14:13
Speaker 3: you know, I like to do something nice for my employees,
• 14:15
Speaker 3: especially with the winter we've had, you know, get them
• 14:18
Speaker 3: out of the house and go let them party a
• 14:21
Speaker 3: little bit at Embassy Suites with the beach theme. So
• 14:23
Speaker 3: and they can just go to that that website or
• 14:26
Speaker 3: that you know to to find out more information about
• 14:28
  Speaker 3: sponsorships too.
• 14:29
Speaker 7: Ray, Yes, and want to do another shout out to Astorgato,

• 14:36
Speaker 7: several years. We very much appreciate their support.
• 14:39
Speaker 3: All Right, and Steve, they're gonna crank us up and
• 14:41
Speaker 3: turn us loose man, Bring on the babes and the beer.
• 14:47
Speaker 3: Really not a good idea, Robert, this was not a
• 14:49

Speaker 3: about the whole thing with Spruce Nobb and Donald Trump? Yeah,
• 17:56
Speaker 3: I'm gonna mention something briefly about it. That's that's all
• 17:58
Speaker 3: I'll say about that. So last week you heard me
• 18:01
Speaker 3: talking about this. You all know by now that President
• 18:04
Speaker 3: Trump wants the Golf of Mexico to be known as
• 18:06
Speaker 3: the Golf of America. The Associated Press, which is a
• 18:09
Speaker 3: nonpartisan basically a collective of several news agencies, have said
• 18:13
Speaker 3: they will continue to refer to it as the Golf
• 18:15
Speaker 3: of Mexico. This White House, though angered by this, as
• 18:18
Speaker 3: banned the Associated Press or AP as we know it
• 18:21
Speaker 3: from at least one White House event that I'm aware of,
• 18:24
Speaker 3: maybe more, And it sets up, in my eyes a
• 18:27
Speaker 3: dangerous president when you start banning news organizations, again, legitimate
• 18:31
Speaker 3: news organizations, because you don't like what they are printing
• 18:34
Speaker 3: or the way that they choose to cover a story.
• 18:37
Speaker 3: Burke Allen of Island Media Strategies, a media company obviously
• 18:41
Speaker 3: happens to dabble in a lot of other things, like
• 18:43
Speaker 3: advising certain radio talk show hosts in Charleston, West Virginia,
• 18:46
Speaker 3: but Burke has seen this happen firsthand. And he's someone
• 18:49
Speaker 3: who's company represents a lot of authors, public speakers, etc.
• 18:54
Speaker 3: From both sides, all sides of the political spectrum. And
• 18:57
Speaker 3: he joins us now from his office in the DC
• 18:59
Speaker 3: metro Plex. Burke, good morning, Welcome to the show.
• 19:02
Speaker 4: Hey, good morning. Before we talk about the associated press. Look,
• 19:06
Speaker 4: my heart just goes out to the folks in Charleston
• 19:09
Speaker 4: after the watermeinon break, but really for the folks in
• 19:11
Speaker 4: southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky. And I know you've
• 19:14
Speaker 4: got a lot of listeners down that way, So thinking
• 19:16
Speaker 4: about all those folks after that flooding over the weekend.
• 19:18
Speaker 3: Yeah, our next of the woods are collective because you're
• 19:22
Speaker 3: from that way too, you know, Logan, particularly Mingo County,
• 19:25
Speaker 3: Wyoming County, McDowell County. This place has just got absolutely
• 19:29
Speaker 3: hammered and TJ and Dave we're going to get into
• 19:31
Speaker 3: more that coming up next hour on talk Line. So Burke,
• 19:34
Speaker 3: most people know you longtime radio fixture in Charleston, Huntington
• 19:38
Speaker 3: and radio markets also major other major cities around the country.
• 19:41
Speaker 3: You serve as manager and agent for some of West
• 19:43
Speaker 3: Virginia is best known loved entertainers from Landau to Homer Hicckham,
• 19:46
Speaker 3: the Dream of Denver, and others. But you also serve
• 19:51
Speaker 3: a lot of people may not know this, and manage
• 19:53
Speaker 3: and serve as a booking agent for a lot of
• 19:55
Speaker 3: other folks, from political writers and speakers to military folks,
• 19:58
Speaker 3: et cetera, many to them from different political ideologies. And
• 20:03
Speaker 3: as someone who resides in the nation's capital, you've seen
• 20:06
Speaker 3: a lot of what we're talking about firsthand. When it
• 20:09
Speaker 3: termed fake news or fake media is thrown out there,
• 20:12
Speaker 3: what do you make of all this?
• 20:14
Speaker 4: Well, so like they old outdate myself, the old dragnet
• 20:19
Speaker 4: reference just to facts, ma'am. So what I'm going to
• 20:22
Speaker 4: talk to you about today has zero political spin. And
• 20:26
Speaker 4: I think that there's a lot of misconception about what
• 20:29
Speaker 4: the Associated Press really does and what it is. You
• 20:33
Speaker 4: mentioned it's collective, So the Associated Press is a nonprofit
• 20:37
Speaker 4: and they share information with newspapers, television stations, radio stations,
• 20:43
Speaker 4: not only in the US but all over the world.
• 20:46
Speaker 4: And if you look at what's called a media bias chart,
• 20:49
Speaker 4: which is something that folks in our industry look at
• 20:52
Speaker 4: on the regular the Associated Press is right there in
• 20:55
Speaker 4: the middle. They don't lean to the left and they
• 20:57
Speaker 4: don't lean to the right. And the new administration got
• 21:02
Speaker 4: been out of shape about the Gulf of Mexico thing
• 21:06
Speaker 4: being renamed the Gulf of America. Well, the Associated Press
• 21:10
Speaker 4: has customers as members of that collective from all over
• 21:14
Speaker 4: the world, not just in the US. And so what
• 21:16
Speaker 4: they've put in their notes in their style guide for
• 21:20
Speaker 4: reporters and journalists and TV and radio folks all over
• 21:23
Speaker 4: the country is not you know, it's got to be
• 21:26
Speaker 4: the Gulf of Mexico. It says it's the Golf of Mexico.
• 21:29
Speaker 4: And President Trump has also renamed it the Gulf of America.
• 21:33
Speaker 4: So they put that in there primarily because they have
• 21:37
Speaker 4: so many folks that utilize the service from outside the
• 21:40
Speaker 4: United States of America.
• 21:43
Speaker 3: So and I get that, but what and I know that,
• 21:46
Speaker 3: as I said, you're somebody that represents people of all
• 21:49
Speaker 3: political ideologies. That's why particularly I wanted to have you
• 21:52
Speaker 3: on the show. Somebody who's not right or somebody that's
• 21:55
Speaker 3: not left. You have them from all sides. Well as
• 21:57
Speaker 3: a media guy or maybe this is an outside are
• 22:00
Speaker 3: possibly looking in. You're not an outsider, but let's just say,
• 22:03
Speaker 3: for you know, for instance, you are what is the
• 22:05
Speaker 3: end game here? I mean, are reporters only going to
• 22:08
Speaker 3: be permitted access to this White House if they go
• 22:10
Speaker 3: along with whatever the president says?
• 22:13
Speaker 4: Well, you know, it's impossible to know what's inside the
• 22:17
Speaker 4: heads of the President and the folks that advise him,
• 22:22
Speaker 4: but I will tell you that you know, within the
• 22:25
Speaker 4: media landscape here in Washington, d C. That you know,
• 22:29
Speaker 4: words like absurd ban against the Associated Press are being
• 22:33
Speaker 4: thrown around an awful lot, and even within the conservative media,
• 22:38
Speaker 4: there are very few folks that are standing up and
• 22:42
Speaker 4: defending the White House's decision. I saw a piece that
• 22:45
Speaker 4: was favorable to them in the National Review, which is
• 22:48
Speaker 4: a conservative website, but even in that opinion piece, you know,
• 22:53
Speaker 4: they talked about this being a bullying tactic and an
• 22:57
Speaker 4: attack on the First Amendments. So it is, it is
• 23:00
Speaker 4: pretty frowned upon. And here's one of the reasons why,
• 23:03
Speaker 4: Dave so they have what's called a White House pool reporter.
• 23:09
Speaker 4: Whenever there's not enough space or for logistical reasons, you
• 23:13
Speaker 4: can't get a whole lot of people in to cover something.
• 23:16
Speaker 4: And the Associated Press pool reporter has been around since
• 23:20
Speaker 4: the Garfield administration in the eighteen eighties and they distribute
• 23:25
Speaker 4: information out to the other hundreds or sometimes thousands of
• 23:29
Speaker 4: media outlets. And you know the reason that the Associated
• 23:33
Speaker 4: Press out of be in their is because they are
• 23:34
Speaker 4: very much down the middle. They're very centrist. So when
• 23:38
Speaker 4: they lose that seat, it's a slippery slope.
• 23:41
Speaker 3: Agree. We're talking to Burke Allen of Aland Media Strategies
• 23:44
Speaker 3: for Dave Island, showing five any line brought to you
• 23:46
Speaker 3: in part by Pinnacle Consultants. Poor indoor air quality can
• 23:49
Speaker 3: cause a variety of health issues. Pinnacle offers specialized indoor
• 23:52
Speaker 3: air quality services for residential, commercial, and industrial type settings.
• 23:56
Speaker 3: Visit Pinnacle court dot net because what you don't know
• 23:58
Speaker 3: can hurt you. Let me be clear on the to bar.
• 24:00
Speaker 3: You know, I'm one hundred percent against anyone stifling free
• 24:04
Speaker 3: speech no matter what they believe. And when certain platforms,
• 24:07
Speaker 3: and I'll go to this, when certain platforms didn't want
• 24:10
Speaker 3: to allow different thoughts or beliefs on let's say COVID,
• 24:13
Speaker 3: let's go by twenty twenty twenty twenty one, I was
• 24:17
Speaker 3: against that too. And so I'm saying that to say
• 24:21
Speaker 3: this isn't exclusive to the Trump White House. It could
• 24:24
Speaker 3: just as easily happen with a Democrat in the White House,
• 24:27
Speaker 3: and it would be just as dangerous then too.
• 24:31
  Speaker 5: Well.
• 24:32
Speaker 4: Yeah, and you know, there are cases where the Biden
• 24:36
Speaker 4: administration barred reporters from participating in things. I remember in particular,
• 24:41
Speaker 4: one reporter that was barred from a Health and Human
• 24:43
Speaker 4: Services call because they asked a question of the HHS
• 24:46
Speaker 4: secretary that they didn't like, and that was the last
• 24:49
Speaker 4: time they were allowed to ask a question on the call.
• 24:52
  Speaker 10: You know.
• 24:52
Speaker 4: The difference there again is that was an opinion based
• 24:56
Speaker 4: in that case, conservative journalist, and so somebody took us
• 25:00
Speaker 4: wife at them and barred them from the call. When
• 25:02
Speaker 4: you bar the Associated Press, then you're barring a very
• 25:06
Speaker 4: centrist voice. And I don't like any of them being barred.
• 25:09
Speaker 4: There are logistical reasons where you can only allow so
• 25:12
Speaker 4: many people in the room. You didn't mention one thing
• 25:14
Speaker 4: that you said, Hey, I don't know what else has happened. Well,
• 25:17
Speaker 4: you know, as it is with this White House, they're
• 25:20
Speaker 4: moving fast. And the next thing that has happened is
• 25:23
Speaker 4: they've now barred the Associated Press reporter and photographer from
• 25:27
Speaker 4: Air Force one as well as from the White House.
• 25:31
Speaker 4: And this has gone on now for almost a week.
• 25:33
  Speaker 6: So this is.
• 25:36
Speaker 4: The fight continues here. And you know, I can't think of,
• 25:41
Speaker 4: to use the old phrase, a better hill to die
• 25:43
Speaker 4: on for the Associated press than this one.
• 25:46
Speaker 3: So, as someone Burke who frequently books authors and speakers
• 25:52
Speaker 3: on shows like this or on book tours or whatever,
• 25:57
Speaker 3: how concerned are you about this? For you, for some
• 26:01
Speaker 3: of your some of your clients.
• 26:04
Speaker 4: Well you make a great point, right, And so we
• 26:06
Speaker 4: do touch based meetings every morning in our company at
• 26:09
Speaker 4: ten thirty Naje Mitch war based here in DC. But
• 26:13
Speaker 4: I'm a West Virginia boy at Hart and we work
• 26:15
Speaker 4: with folks from West Virginia and all over the country.
• 26:17
Speaker 4: And when you talk about authors, what that really means
• 26:20
Speaker 4: is subject matter experts.
• 26:22
  Speaker 8: Right.
• 26:22
Speaker 4: So, for example, I represent a retired Marine Corps colonel
• 26:26
Speaker 4: who was an attack helicopter pilot, and he was all
• 26:30
Speaker 4: over the media a couple of weeks ago when we
• 26:32
Speaker 4: had that horrible helicopter plane crash over Reagan National here
• 26:36
Speaker 4: in DC. Well, you know, colonel Dunn is available to
• 26:40
Speaker 4: do media interviews and did do media interviews on very
• 26:45
Speaker 4: conservative outlets and also on CNN. And so is it concerning.
• 26:51
Speaker 4: It's absolutely concerning all the way around whenever you stifle
• 26:56
Speaker 4: voices that have legit information, Because when Colonel Dumb was
• 27:00
Speaker 4: on the air, it was not about the left or
• 27:03
Speaker 4: the right. It wasn't about the politics. It was about
• 27:06
Speaker 4: what really happened, what could have happened from a very
• 27:09
Speaker 4: experienced helicopter pilot who had flown in that zone. So yeah,
• 27:13
Speaker 4: I think this could be a real issue, and it's
• 27:16
Speaker 4: just one of those things we've all got to watch
• 27:18
Speaker 4: closely and push back against. You know, there's some talk, Dave,
• 27:23
Speaker 4: that the Associated Press is an antiquated institution. You know,
• 27:27
Speaker 4: that's a talking point that I've seen thrown out there,
• 27:29
Speaker 4: that anybody with a cell phone, you know, in video
• 27:33
Speaker 4: streaming can get information, but as you know, that information
• 27:38
Speaker 4: can be really slanted if no one's paying attention, and
• 27:42
Speaker 4: in the Associated Press it's part of their credo to
• 27:45
Speaker 4: keep it in the middle.
• 27:46
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, this would be different in my opinion.
• 27:48
Speaker 3: I wouldn't be a fan of it, but it would
• 27:52
Speaker 3: be much different if this were CNN that they were,
• 27:55
Speaker 3: or or a Fox News for that matter, because those
• 27:58
Speaker 3: are obviously organizations with slant. I mean, Fox News has
• 28:01
Speaker 3: has admitted that, you know, MSNBC whatever. I wouldn't be
• 28:05
Speaker 3: in favor of it, but I would almost understand it
• 28:08
Speaker 3: a little bit more. The Associated Press is far far
• 28:11
Speaker 3: from that, that's right.
• 28:13
Speaker 4: And you know when you hear swipes that are made
• 28:17
Speaker 4: at the media, you know, and don't get me started,
• 28:20
Speaker 4: I've lit a fire under him. You know, the mainstream media,
• 28:26
Speaker 4: the Associated Press supplies information to local and regional outlets.
• 28:32
Speaker 4: And you know, you can't, for example, there in the
• 28:36
Speaker 4: Charleston mar you can't throw someone like Amanda Baron under
• 28:39
Speaker 4: the bus, who's a very down the middle of reporter,
• 28:42
Speaker 4: and throw her in with an opinion host on Fox
• 28:45
Speaker 4: News or MSNBC or any of those. It's a whole
• 28:48
Speaker 4: different thing. And the Associated Press not only supplies information
• 28:53
Speaker 4: to those local and regional outlets, but they also accept information.
• 28:56
Speaker 4: So someone in your shop, like Chris Lawrence, has filed
• 28:59
Speaker 4: many or easy Sociated Press is used to get what's
• 29:02
Speaker 4: happening in Charleston, West Virginia, in the state of West
• 29:04
Speaker 4: Virginia out to the rest of the country.
• 29:06
Speaker 3: All right, interesting stuff, Burke, what's the weather like in DC?
• 29:10
Speaker 3: Because we were supposed to stop snowing in Charleston last night.
• 29:14
Speaker 3: It didn't get the memo, and it's still pouring and
• 29:15
Speaker 3: the roads are horrible, and so on and so forth.
• 29:17
Speaker 3: Plus I got another snowstorm coveted Wednesday. What's it like
• 29:20
Speaker 3: in DC right now?
• 29:22
Speaker 4: It's gonna hit you guys before it hits us. We
• 29:24
Speaker 4: had the big windstorm here and it knocked a lot
• 29:27
Speaker 4: of power out in and around DC. Some of the
• 29:29
Speaker 4: folks in my office that are over in Annapolis, Maryland
• 29:31
Speaker 4: are without power last night, without internet today. And when
• 29:35
Speaker 4: you're in the media business having no internet.
• 29:38
Speaker 3: It's kind of tough. All right, Burt, stay safe, We'll
• 29:41
  Speaker 3: talk soon.
• 29:41
Speaker 4: Man. Thanks a lot, Hey, thanks for having me on,

Speaker 3: This week is an entrepreneurship Week in West Virginia and
• 32:26
Speaker 3: throughout the nation. The new Secretary of Status, Chris Warner,
• 32:29
Speaker 3: Secretary of State's Office, of course, the chief business officer
• 32:32
Speaker 3: of the State. Secretary Warner joins us. Now, good morning,
• 32:35
Speaker 3: welcome to the show, sir.
• 32:37
Speaker 6: Hey, good morning, Dave, thanks for having met on this morning.
• 32:41
Speaker 3: It is National Entrepreneurship Week. What's this all about? Secretary?
• 32:46
Speaker 6: You know, this is something that Congress chartered about twenty
• 32:50
Speaker 6: years ago, actually I think twenty two thousand and six,
• 32:55
Speaker 6: and it's designed to promote core values, education and collaboration
• 33:01
Speaker 6: with entrepreneurs and then among the network of stakeholders that
• 33:06
Speaker 6: support entrepreneurs. And you know, I would just point out
• 33:09
Speaker 6: for our listeners and remind them, you know, I claim
• 33:13
Speaker 6: to have been an entrepreneur once upon a time, and
• 33:16
Speaker 6: you know, it's a little bit different than being a businessman.
• 33:19
Speaker 6: An entrepreneurs one that risks their own money, and that's
• 33:24
Speaker 6: important and they need a network to support them. And
• 33:28
Speaker 6: that's what National Entrepreneurship Week is all about.
• 33:31
Speaker 3: And Secretary, when people when most people think of the
• 33:33
Speaker 3: Secretary of State's Office, they think about elections and voter
• 33:36
Speaker 3: registrations and things of that nature. But the office, uh
• 33:40
Speaker 3: pretty much handles everything related to businesses.
• 33:44
Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, of our you know, roughly fifty employees,
• 33:48
Speaker 6: forty one of the office staff are focused on business.
• 33:54
Speaker 6: You only really have six or seven that are dedicated
• 33:57
Speaker 6: to elections. I've got to tell you this.
• 34:01
Speaker 3: No, no, no, you go ahead, go aheads them.
• 34:03
Speaker 6: I was just getting ready to say, you know, being
• 34:05
Speaker 6: there in the capital this last week, you know, I
• 34:10
Speaker 6: got a chance to go, you know, introduce myself to
• 34:13
Speaker 6: our thirty new legislators, and they were really I mean,
• 34:18
Speaker 6: they're really good and smart legislators. By the way, I
• 34:21
Speaker 6: didn't hear one of them mention anything about Spruce knov
• 34:24
Speaker 6: or Trump Mountain or anything of the sort, and they
• 34:28
Speaker 6: were anxious to hear about. You know, we have a
• 34:29
Speaker 6: Young Entrepreneurs program for those thirty and under, and we
• 34:34
Speaker 6: also have a veteran's Boots to Business program. But both
• 34:37
Speaker 6: of those programs are set up to make sure that
• 34:41
Speaker 6: there's no registration fee if you want to start a
• 34:44
Speaker 6: new business, and no annual fees for the first four years.
• 34:49
Speaker 6: And again on the veterans side of the shop, as
• 34:51
Speaker 6: you well know, you used to run that shop for
• 34:54
Speaker 6: the Secretary of State's office. That is, you know, for
• 34:58
Speaker 6: veterans and their spouse and active duty members and their
• 35:01
Speaker 6: spouses if they want to start a new business. But
• 35:06
Speaker 6: we have some really good, new smart legislators that are
• 35:11
Speaker 6: very engaged with what we're doing on the business side
• 35:14
Speaker 6: of things. Now. We hope to get them involved on
• 35:17
Speaker 6: the election side soon with some bills were encouraging them
• 35:22
Speaker 6: to sponsor. But right now, it's all about entrepreneurs this
• 35:26
Speaker 6: week and focusing on that effort.
• 35:29
Speaker 3: Talk about the business one Stop Center in Charleston moved.
• 35:33
Speaker 3: It's number one. It's changed locations over the last couple
• 35:36
Speaker 3: of years. It used to be on Washington Street down
• 35:39
Speaker 3: a next tricky Fish is the way I used to
• 35:40
Speaker 3: tell people how to find it. But now it's moved
• 35:42
Speaker 3: a little bit. Talk about the one Stop Business center
• 35:44
  Speaker 3: here in Charleston.
• 35:47
Speaker 6: You know that the location now is at thirteen Canoe
• 35:52
Speaker 6: Bulevard West. I call it the Channel thirteen building. They're
• 35:57
Speaker 6: right next to the intersection of the the Interstate on
• 36:02
Speaker 6: the west side. But you know that was the first
• 36:06
Speaker 6: four agency, single location business and licensing center in the nation,
• 36:11
Speaker 6: which includes the Tax Department, the Division of Labor, and
• 36:15
Speaker 6: the West Virginia Small Business Development Center, and then the
• 36:19
Speaker 6: Secretary of State's Office is the fourth agency. Really proud
• 36:24
Speaker 6: of what those guys are doing there. Sarah runs that
• 36:29
Speaker 6: shop right now. And just last week, we had a
• 36:33
Speaker 6: gentleman come into the Secretary of State's Office in the
• 36:36
Speaker 6: state Capitol very frustrated. He had been tossed around three
• 36:40
Speaker 6: or four times at the city and county level and
• 36:43
Speaker 6: was told he needed to have a license to op
• 36:45
Speaker 6: rate who was running a DJ business. We were able
• 36:49
Speaker 6: to provide him a map getting down to the West
• 36:52
Speaker 6: Virginia One Stop Business Center, and it was reported back
• 36:56
Speaker 6: that he was walking out the door twenty two minutes
• 36:59
Speaker 6: later with a business license ready to go and had
• 37:03
Speaker 6: done everything he needed to do to register with the
• 37:07
Speaker 6: State of West Virginia. So we're very proud of being
• 37:09
Speaker 6: able to get people in and out the door very
• 37:12
Speaker 6: quickly and on their way and ready to do business
• 37:16
  Speaker 6: in West Virginia.
• 37:17
Speaker 3: And you're going to have an open house, I understand.
• 37:19
Speaker 3: I guess that's weather permitting at this point, but hopefully
• 37:21
Speaker 3: you're going to have an open house on Wednesday, right.
• 37:25
Speaker 6: It is it sounds like it might be the same
• 37:26
Speaker 6: time that the snow is scheduled, but three to five
• 37:30
Speaker 6: pm we are having an open house. They've done some
• 37:34
Speaker 6: renovations there. The building owner has done renovations for us
• 37:38
Speaker 6: to fit our specific office, and we're going to do
• 37:42
Speaker 6: a ribbon cutting. Even though we've you know, we've been
• 37:46
Speaker 6: set up there and we have hubs and Clerksburg and Martinsburg.
• 37:51
Speaker 6: We're going to celebrate and have an open house for
• 37:54
Speaker 6: the anniversary of the West Virginia One Stop Business Center.
• 37:58
Speaker 3: All right, well, happy Entrepreneurship Week, sir. We'll talk again soon.
• 38:02
Speaker 3: I appreciate you being here, man, Thanks a lot.
• 38:03
  Speaker 4: Hey.
• 38:04
Speaker 6: Let me mention one last thing, the West Virginia entrepreneurs Conference.
• 38:09
Speaker 6: It's coming out to April twenty ninth at Shepherd University,
• 38:13
Speaker 6: and folks can find more information on that online.
• 38:17
Speaker 3: All right, appreciated, Secretary one, and we'll talk soon. Thanks
• 38:19

• 38:42
Speaker 3: other side sent out how many closed in the month.
• 38:44
Speaker 3: Why let me I'll take a stab at that, because
• 38:48
Speaker 3: sometimes if you're going to open up a business, it
• 38:51
Speaker 3: is a specific process that you have to go through,
• 38:55
Speaker 3: not necessarily for closing a business. It Some people just
• 38:59
Speaker 3: cease operation and that's it. Some people file bankruptcy, some
• 39:02
Speaker 3: people there is no Some people will even though they
• 39:06
Speaker 3: go out of business, will keep their business license active.
• 39:09
Speaker 3: And as long as you pay the fee. Again something
• 39:11
Speaker 3: I know a little bit about, as long as you
• 39:13
Speaker 3: pay the fee to the state through the Secretary of
• 39:16
Speaker 3: State's office, you can keep that business license open. So
• 39:18
Speaker 3: it would it would be very difficult for a state
• 39:22
Speaker 3: agency to report how many businesses were closed because there's
• 39:25
Speaker 3: so many different ways to go about it. Again, some
• 39:28
Speaker 3: people just say hey, I'm done, they walk out, and
• 39:31
Speaker 3: you never know, you never know about it. And others
• 39:34
Speaker 3: do go through the whole process of dissolving a corporation,
• 39:36
Speaker 3: and others just say, well, I'm going to close my
• 39:38
Speaker 3: physical shop, but I'm going to pay the money to
• 39:41

• 40:50
Speaker 3: Here you go, he commented on the apiece of several
• 40:53
Speaker 3: days ago. Okay, I will take a look at that,
• 40:55
Speaker 3: all right. So this whole thing with the renaming of
• 41:02
Speaker 3: Spruce Knob or whatever foolishness came out on Friday, and
• 41:06
Speaker 3: I thought it was interesting to hear the Secretary Warners
• 41:09
Speaker 3: say at the Capitol that no one there was talking
• 41:11
  Speaker 3: about it.
• 41:13
  Speaker 4: I guess.
• 41:14
Speaker 3: I guess the story hit around midday and it sets
• 41:21
Speaker 3: the Facebook and X world's ablaze. And I said it
• 41:27
Speaker 3: now and I will say it again. And by the way,
• 41:31
Speaker 3: I did a little video about it yesterday. You can
• 41:34
Speaker 3: see that cheap plug on Dave alland Radio on Facebook
• 41:37
Speaker 3: or at Dave A seventy on X. In my opinion,
• 41:42
Speaker 3: it was never really meant to be taken seriously, but
• 41:48
Speaker 3: yet people lost their collective minds over it. First of all,
• 41:53
Speaker 3: it was a resolution, it was not a bill, and
• 41:58
Speaker 3: it's not going to see the light of day. But
• 42:02
Speaker 3: hang with me here. It did exactly what it was
• 42:06
Speaker 3: intended to do, and that was to excite the masses,
• 42:13
Speaker 3: which it did. The best thing, the single best thing
• 42:20
Speaker 3: that you can do in situations like this is simply
• 42:28
Speaker 3: ignored it for just what it is. But that's not
• 42:32
Speaker 3: what happened. I was in the office upstairs eleven eleven thirty.
• 42:35
Speaker 3: Someone sent me the story. It actually wasn't a story yet,
• 42:40
Speaker 3: it was actually just they sent me a copy, if
• 42:42
Speaker 3: you will, electronically on my phone of the bill. And
• 42:45
Speaker 3: then of course you go to social media and everybody.
• 42:49
Speaker 3: It was all the talk until the flooding hit, which
• 42:52
Speaker 3: you know, you're in our thoughts and prayers go with
• 42:54
Speaker 3: all those folks. But on Friday, Friday night into midday Saturday,
• 42:59
Speaker 3: and it's still floated around out there a little bit.
• 43:01
Speaker 3: It got everybody all in a tizzy about this thing,
• 43:05
Speaker 3: which is exactly what the people wanted that put it
• 43:10
Speaker 3: out there, because it did one of two things. It
• 43:16
  Speaker 3: let's look at a and B thing here. A. It
• 43:19
Speaker 3: pandered to the base that the people that just absolutely
• 43:25
Speaker 3: love Donald Trump and worship Donald Trump. Now again I
• 43:29
Speaker 3: have said, just because you voted for Donald Trump doesn't
• 43:31
Speaker 3: mean you necessarily worship the guy. But a lot of
• 43:33
Speaker 3: people do. Or it made a whole lot of Trump
• 43:38
Speaker 3: haters really really angry. That was, in my opinion, the design,
• 43:44
Speaker 3: that's what was behind this whole thing was to a
• 43:48
Speaker 3: stoke the fires, the pandering of the base, and b
• 43:53
Speaker 3: to piss off Trump haters lack of a better term,
• 43:56
Speaker 3: and it worked, and it worked in both sense. So
• 44:02
Speaker 3: again I saw it, and I you know, as a
• 44:07
Speaker 3: as a responsible member of the media, I did do
• 44:11
Speaker 3: a little something on it. But again it's and we've
• 44:14
Speaker 3: seen this with the legislatures, and I'm and it goes
• 44:16
Speaker 3: on in other states as well. I know people pointed
• 44:18
Speaker 3: out a similar thing that happened in Ohio. Rest assured,
• 44:22
Speaker 3: West Virginia's highest point, Spruce Knob, is not going to
• 44:25
Speaker 3: be called Trump Mountain. It's it's not. It's simply not
• 44:31
  Speaker 3: gonna happen.
• 44:31
Speaker 6: So just calm down.
