- 0:00Speaker 1: Hype for listeners. We are going to be discussing First
- 0:02Speaker 1: Chronicles twenty two today and the preparation that David does
- 0:06Speaker 1: for God's temple. Speaking of David, he wrote a lot
- 0:17Speaker 1: of the psalms. He wrote all different types of psalms.
- 0:20Speaker 1: He wrote happy psalms, sad psalms, prayerful psalms, joyful psalms.
- 0:27Speaker 1: And he also wrote a type of psalm called an
- 0:29Speaker 1: imprecatory psalm. An imprecatory psalm is when you ask for
- 0:34Speaker 1: God's judgment to be done on somebody. And so my
- 0:38Speaker 1: sister and I talked yesterday about the imprecatory psalms. Can
- 0:42Speaker 1: Christians pray them? Can we pray for God's judgment on
- 0:46Speaker 1: our enemies? So my sister and I talked about that
- 0:49Speaker 1: on the YouTube channel, which I have that video linked
- 0:53Speaker 1: in the description, and I think it's a really important topic.
- 0:56Speaker 1: You know, how do we deal with the anger that
- 0:59Speaker 1: we feel towards people who persecute us or say nasty
- 1:03Speaker 1: things about us? How as Christians do we handle that?
- 1:07Speaker 1: So take a look at that video when you get
- 1:09Speaker 1: a chance. But for now, let's go ahead and read
- 1:11Speaker 1: First Chronicles twenty two. The entire thing. I'll be reading
- 1:15Speaker 1: as I usually do, from the web. I've also got
- 1:17Speaker 1: my delicious cup of seven weeks coffee right here with me.
- 1:21Speaker 1: And yeah, you know, I haven't drank any tea in
- 1:25Speaker 1: a very long period of time, and I couldn't be happier.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I could not be happier over this turn of events.
- 1:31Speaker 1: I love coffee, I love the smell of it, I
- 1:34Speaker 1: love the taste of it, and I am just overjoyed
- 1:37Speaker 1: right now to be sharing a cup of coffee with
- 1:39Speaker 1: all of you wonderful, faithful listeners. So grab a cup
- 1:43Speaker 1: of coffee, or I guess you're a cup of tea
- 1:45Speaker 1: for those of you who prefer tea over coffee. And
- 1:48Speaker 1: let's go ahead and read first Chronicles twenty two, the
- 1:50Speaker 1: entire thing. As always, I'll be reading from the web.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Then David said, this is the house of Yahweh, God,
- 1:57Speaker 1: and this is the altar of burnt offering for Israel.
- 2:00Speaker 1: David gave orders to gather together the foreigners who were
- 2:03Speaker 1: in the land of Israel, and he set masons to
- 2:05Speaker 1: cut dressed stones to build God's house. David prepared iron
- 2:09Speaker 1: in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates,
- 2:11Speaker 1: and for the couplings and bronze, and abundance without weight,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and cedar trees without number. For the Sedonians and the
- 2:18Speaker 1: people of Tire brought cedar trees in abundance to David.
- 2:21Speaker 1: David said, Solomon, my son, is young and tender, and
- 2:24Speaker 1: the house that is to be built for Yahweh must
- 2:26Speaker 1: be exceedingly magnificent of fame and of glory throughout all countries.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I will therefore make preparation for it. So David prepared
- 2:34Speaker 1: abundantly before his death. Then he called for Solomon his son,
- 2:38Speaker 1: and commanded him to build a house for Yahweh, the
- 2:40Speaker 1: God of Israel. David said to Solomon his son, as
- 2:43Speaker 1: for me, it was in my heart to build a
- 2:45Speaker 1: house to the name of Yahweh, my god. But Yahwei's
- 2:47Speaker 1: word came to me, saying, you have shed blood abundantly
- 2:50Speaker 1: and have made great wars. You shall not build a
- 2:53Speaker 1: house to my name, because you've shed much blood on
- 2:55Speaker 1: the earth. In my sight, behold, a son shall be
- 2:58Speaker 1: born to you who shall be a man of peace.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I will give him rest from all of his enemies
- 3:03Speaker 1: all around, for his name shall be Solomon, and I
- 3:05Speaker 1: will give peace and quietness to Israel. In his days,
- 3:08Speaker 1: he shall build a house for my name, and he
- 3:10Speaker 1: will be my son, and I will be his father,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over
- 3:15Speaker 1: Israel forever. Now, my son, may Yahweh be with you
- 3:19Speaker 1: and prosper you, and build the house of Yahweh or God,
- 3:22Speaker 1: as he has spoken concerning you. May Yahweh give you
- 3:25Speaker 1: discretion and understanding and put you in charge of Israel,
- 3:28Speaker 1: so that you may keep the law of Yahweh or God.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Then you will prosper if you observe to do the
- 3:33Speaker 1: statutes and the ordinances with which Yahweh gave Moses concerning Israel.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Be strong and courageous, don't be afraid, and don't be dismayed.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Now behold in my affliction. I have prepared for Yawei's
- 3:45Speaker 1: house one hundred thousand talents of gold, one million talents
- 3:49Speaker 1: of silver and bronze, and iron without weight, for it
- 3:52Speaker 1: is in abundance. I have also prepared timber and stone
- 3:56Speaker 1: that you may add to them. There are also workmen
- 3:58Speaker 1: with you in abundance, utters and workers of stone and timber,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and all kinds of men who are skillful in every
- 4:04Speaker 1: kind of work. Of the gold, the silver, the bronze,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and the iron. There is no number. Arise and be doing,
- 4:10Speaker 1: and may Yahweh be with you. David also commanded all
- 4:13Speaker 1: the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying,
- 4:17Speaker 1: isn't Yahweh or God with you? Hasn't He given you
- 4:19Speaker 1: rest on every side? For He has delivered the inhabitants
- 4:22Speaker 1: of the land into my hand, and the land is
- 4:25Speaker 1: subdued before Yahweh and before his people. Now set your
- 4:28Speaker 1: heart and your soul to follow Yahweh or God. Arise
- 4:31Speaker 1: therefore and build the sanctuary of Yahweh God, and bring
- 4:35Speaker 1: the arc of Yahwa's covenant and the holy vessels of
- 4:37Speaker 1: God into the house that is to be built for
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yahweh's name. So in this chapter David is actually getting
- 4:44Speaker 1: close to death. It kind of seems like the author
- 4:48Speaker 1: of the Chronicles, who by the way, is credited as Ezra,
- 4:52Speaker 1: who was a priest of Israel, you can tell that
- 4:56Speaker 1: he isn't really focusing so much on the ins and
- 4:59Speaker 1: outs of David's life like Second Samuel was, but more
- 5:04Speaker 1: so he's focusing on the things that David did, specifically
- 5:08Speaker 1: regarding the history of the Temple there's already been full
- 5:13Speaker 1: chapters dedicated to David's zeal. I suppose for the temple,
- 5:20Speaker 1: a chapter for him bringing the Ark of the Covenant home,
- 5:23Speaker 1: a chapter for the musicians, the worshippers that David put
- 5:28Speaker 1: in place for the Ark of the Covenant, and also
- 5:32Speaker 1: for the ten of meeting that was in Gibbeon. Not
- 5:35Speaker 1: to mention, in the last chapter, we talked about how
- 5:38Speaker 1: David purchased this entire mountain that would eventually be the
- 5:43Speaker 1: location of the Temple to God, which is what it
- 5:46Speaker 1: says right here in First Chronicles twenty two, verse one.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Then David said, this is the location of the House
- 5:54Speaker 1: of Yahweh God, and this is the location of the
- 5:56Speaker 1: altar of burnt offering for Israel. Now at web words
- 6:00Speaker 1: that a little differently. But what David is discussing here
- 6:04Speaker 1: is the location for the temple, which was the mountain
- 6:09Speaker 1: that he purchased in the previous chapter. So David is
- 6:13Speaker 1: already making all of these preparations for the temple. David
- 6:18Speaker 1: desperately wanted to build this, but God told him no
- 6:22Speaker 1: several chapters ago, but that didn't stop David from doing
- 6:26Speaker 1: a lot of prep work. And I do wonder if
- 6:30Speaker 1: it was because David didn't trust Solomon to get it
- 6:33Speaker 1: all done, or if it was because David just really
- 6:37Speaker 1: wanted to aid Solomon. I don't know. There could have
- 6:40Speaker 1: been two things going on there, you know, this like
- 6:42Speaker 1: kind of parental I got to make sure he's doing
- 6:44Speaker 1: it right. And it also could have been I really
- 6:47Speaker 1: really want to participate in this monumental building of God's Temple.
- 6:51Speaker 1: So in this chapter, that is what happens. David does
- 6:54Speaker 1: all of this prep work for the building of the
- 6:57Speaker 1: temple in order to aid a Solomon. So here's what
- 7:00Speaker 1: it says. In verse two, David gave orders to gather
- 7:03Speaker 1: together the foreigners who were in the land of Israel,
- 7:06Speaker 1: and he set to masons to cut dressed stones to
- 7:08Speaker 1: build God's House. Now, this I believe has talked about
- 7:12Speaker 1: more in depth in First Kings five fifteen through eighteen.
- 7:16Speaker 1: A lot of the stonecutters were actually foreign people that
- 7:22Speaker 1: lived in Israel. This would have included prisoners of war, criminals,
- 7:26Speaker 1: and slaves, not to mention also hired help as well.
- 7:31Speaker 1: That's talked about a little bit in First King's chapter
- 7:34Speaker 1: five one through six, and in fact, King Hiram of Tire,
- 7:39Speaker 1: who was a friend of David and Solomon, actually sent
- 7:43Speaker 1: some workers of his to help Solomon as well with
- 7:46Speaker 1: the building of the temple. Here's what that says, First
- 7:49Speaker 1: Kings five, Starting in verse one, King of Tire sent
- 7:53Speaker 1: his servants to Solomon, for he had heard that they
- 7:55Speaker 1: had anointed him king in the place of his father,
- 7:57Speaker 1: and Hiram had always loved David. And then jumping down
- 8:00Speaker 1: to verse six, Solomon actually sends a letter to Hiram
- 8:05Speaker 1: and he says this, therefore, command that cedar trees be
- 8:09Speaker 1: cut for me out of Lebanon. My servants will be
- 8:11Speaker 1: with your servants, and I will give you wages for
- 8:13Speaker 1: your servants according to all that you say. For you
- 8:16Speaker 1: know that there is nobody among us who knows how
- 8:18Speaker 1: to cut timber like the Sedonians. So there is a
- 8:22Speaker 1: lot of people willing to help Solomon with this project.
- 8:25Speaker 1: So it did include hired help as well, as you
- 8:27Speaker 1: can see in First Kings chapter five, Solomon did have
- 8:32Speaker 1: hired help there as well. So there is a large
- 8:35Speaker 1: amount of people that we're helping with this project. And David,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you know, prepared all of this beforehand. And going back
- 8:42Speaker 1: to our passage for today. Verse three, it says David
- 8:45Speaker 1: also prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the
- 8:49Speaker 1: doors of the gates, and for the couplings, and bronze
- 8:51Speaker 1: in abundance without weight. And what's really interesting about that
- 8:54Speaker 1: is iron was relatively new. In fact, these days are
- 8:59Speaker 1: call the Iron Age. The Iron Age was approximately from
- 9:03Speaker 1: one thousand BC to nine sixty two BC. That included
- 9:08Speaker 1: Iron Age one and two. Now, the people who actually
- 9:12Speaker 1: made iron famous was the Philistines and the Greeks. And
- 9:18Speaker 1: you can actually see back in the days of King
- 9:20Speaker 1: Saul that the Philistines were very hush hush with how
- 9:25Speaker 1: they produced their iron. Israel was not allowed to know
- 9:28Speaker 1: their secrets. In fact, Israel during the time of Saul
- 9:32Speaker 1: wasn't even allowed to have any sharp tools whatsoever. The
- 9:36Speaker 1: Philistines would take them all from the Israelites, so that
- 9:41Speaker 1: there was only like a couple swords found hidden in
- 9:45Speaker 1: Israel during that time. But you can see now during
- 9:48Speaker 1: the reign of David, how all of that is changed.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Israel now knows the secret to iron work because David
- 9:57Speaker 1: went in and completely subdued the Philistines and took their
- 10:02Speaker 1: secrets from them. So now David and his people know
- 10:07Speaker 1: how to produce iron nails. It says David prepared iron
- 10:12Speaker 1: in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates,
- 10:15Speaker 1: and for the couplings, and bronze in abundance without weight,
- 10:19Speaker 1: and cedar trees without number for the Sedonians, and the
- 10:23Speaker 1: people of Tire brought cedar trees in abundance to David.
- 10:27Speaker 1: So David was already in communication with Hiram, King Attire.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Hiram had already been producing cedar trees for David, knowing
- 10:37Speaker 1: that David was preparing this temple for Yahweh, which begs
- 10:41Speaker 1: the question was Hiram a Yahweh worshiper? Many people actually
- 10:47Speaker 1: believe yes, he was, just due to the fact that
- 10:50Speaker 1: he was so gung ho about giving gifts for the
- 10:55Speaker 1: building of God's temple. He was a constant asset to
- 11:00Speaker 1: David and to Solomon when it came to the building
- 11:03Speaker 1: of this temple. However, scripturally we don't know if Hiram,
- 11:08Speaker 1: King of Tire ever became a Yahweh worshiper or not,
- 11:12Speaker 1: but circumstantial evidence kind of says that he was. Then
- 11:17Speaker 1: it says right here in verse five, David said, Solomon,
- 11:21Speaker 1: my son is young and tender, and the house that
- 11:25Speaker 1: is to be built for Yahweh must be exceedingly magnificent,
- 11:29Speaker 1: of fame and of glory throughout all countries. I will
- 11:32Speaker 1: therefore make preparation for it. So that's what I mean
- 11:36Speaker 1: when I think David was in a sense kind of
- 11:40Speaker 1: believing Solomon couldn't do it on his own, like having
- 11:42Speaker 1: this sort of like fatherly thing where he's like, no,
- 11:46Speaker 1: my son can't handle this. I definitely got a step
- 11:49Speaker 1: in and help because he calls Solomon young and tender.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Solomon was not that young when all of this was
- 11:56Speaker 1: taking place. He would have been most likely in his
- 11:59Speaker 1: early twenties. But you can see that David treated all
- 12:05Speaker 1: of his kids as if they were children, even when
- 12:09Speaker 1: they were mature, grown adults. In fact, in two Samuel
- 12:13Speaker 1: chapter eighteen, during the whole fiasco with Absalom, David's son
- 12:20Speaker 1: who tried to kill him and take the throne for himself,
- 12:23Speaker 1: David called Absalom a young man, even though Absalom would
- 12:28Speaker 1: have been most likely in his thirties to early forties.
- 12:33Speaker 1: It seems clear to me that David considered all of
- 12:36Speaker 1: his children just to be young and immature, which was
- 12:40Speaker 1: why it's very likely that David was not a good
- 12:43Speaker 1: disciplinarian because he always thought of his kids as being
- 12:48Speaker 1: like young, innocent children. But unfortunately that was not the case,
- 12:52Speaker 1: specifically with his son Absalom, and actually many of his
- 12:56Speaker 1: other sons as well. There was not just Absalom causing trouble,
- 13:00Speaker 1: but many many of his kids caused a lot of issues.
- 13:05Speaker 1: But regardless, he considers Solomon, who was in his twenties
- 13:08Speaker 1: most likely as young and tender. But right after saying
- 13:13Speaker 1: all this, he calls for Solomon, his son in verse six,
- 13:16Speaker 1: and he commanded him to build a house for Yahweh,
- 13:19Speaker 1: the God of Israel. And notice what David said in
- 13:21Speaker 1: verse five. He said the house for Yahweh had to
- 13:23Speaker 1: be exceedingly magnificent, of fame and glory throughout all countries.
- 13:29Speaker 1: So David wanted God's temple to be a beautiful show
- 13:35Speaker 1: piece showing who Yahweh really was. And honestly, this is
- 13:40Speaker 1: something the church has done for generations. It's only within
- 13:44Speaker 1: the past one hundred to two hundred years or so
- 13:46Speaker 1: that churches have become ugly. Generally speaking, when somebody went
- 13:50Speaker 1: to church, they would experience beautiful music, beautiful art, beautiful
- 13:57Speaker 1: architecture in every church that they stepped foot in. That
- 14:02Speaker 1: was something considered to be very important to show the
- 14:05Speaker 1: greatness of God. And that's something I do think, unfortunately
- 14:09Speaker 1: we have lost over the years. God gives all of us,
- 14:15Speaker 1: each individual person, amazing talents that he wants us to
- 14:19Speaker 1: use for the best of his ability. I mean, look
- 14:22Speaker 1: at David. Just a few chapters before this, he was
- 14:25Speaker 1: putting musicians in place to worship at God's temples, and
- 14:31Speaker 1: these musicians were excellent. It says excellent at what they did,
- 14:36Speaker 1: and they were teaching other people who had talents how
- 14:39Speaker 1: to be even more excellent. So I think that excellence
- 14:44Speaker 1: is something that we've kind of lost over the years,
- 14:46Speaker 1: but I do see it coming back. And I definitely
- 14:50Speaker 1: don't think that Christian churches have to be in poverty
- 14:56Speaker 1: in order to be holy. I know that there's a
- 14:57Speaker 1: Christian poverty movement that a lot of pastors kind of
- 15:02Speaker 1: go for these days, but that's also not a biblical model,
- 15:07Speaker 1: not even in the New Testament. I mean, how many
- 15:09Speaker 1: times do we see Paul telling people that they need
- 15:12Speaker 1: to pay their pastors and their church leaders. He says
- 15:16Speaker 1: it all the time. So, no, the Christian poverty movement
- 15:19Speaker 1: is not biblical. And anybody who thinks that churches are
- 15:24Speaker 1: not holy because they are accepting payment, well that's just
- 15:29Speaker 1: not biblical. It says specifically in scripture that God is
- 15:32Speaker 1: the one who gives financial blessing. He says that, so
- 15:39Speaker 1: God's temple here, David wants it to be beautiful. He
- 15:43Speaker 1: wants it to be a showpiece for all of these
- 15:47Speaker 1: other foreigners that are going to come into Israel and
- 15:50Speaker 1: look at this temple and see how reverent and different
- 15:54Speaker 1: the worship of Yahweh is compared to whatever deity these
- 15:59Speaker 1: foreigners worship. So David says to Solomon his son in
- 16:04Speaker 1: verse seven, as for me, it was in my heart
- 16:06Speaker 1: to build a house to the name of Yahweh, my God.
- 16:09Speaker 1: But Yahwei's word came to me saying, you have shed
- 16:11Speaker 1: blood abundantly and have made great wars. You shall not
- 16:14Speaker 1: build a house to my name, because you've shed much
- 16:17Speaker 1: blood on the earth. In my sight, Behold, a son
- 16:19Speaker 1: shall be born to you who shall be a man
- 16:21Speaker 1: of peace. I will give him rest from all of
- 16:23Speaker 1: his enemies all around. For his name shall be Solomon.
- 16:27Speaker 1: And I will give peace and quietness to Israel in
- 16:29Speaker 1: his days. So David received a prophecy from God. God
- 16:34Speaker 1: had told David the reason I am not having you
- 16:38Speaker 1: build my temple and your son do it instead is
- 16:42Speaker 1: because you are a man of war and because you
- 16:45Speaker 1: have shed much of blood on the earth. Whereas your
- 16:49Speaker 1: son Solomon, he is not going to be a man
- 16:51Speaker 1: of war. He's going to be a man of peace.
- 16:54Speaker 1: I'm going to give Israel peace from every side, and
- 16:59Speaker 1: that is why Saulomn is going to build this temple.
- 17:01Speaker 1: So a lot of people wonder from reading this is
- 17:04Speaker 1: God against war? Well, obviously not in every case, because
- 17:09Speaker 1: in Psalm chapter sixty nine, David actually praises God and
- 17:13Speaker 1: says that God is the one who trains his arms
- 17:18Speaker 1: for war. We also see in Judges chapter one, God
- 17:24Speaker 1: having the Israelites learn how to go to war. So
- 17:27Speaker 1: not in every single case is God against war, because unfortunately,
- 17:32Speaker 1: sometimes war is necessary, especially if aggressive people are coming
- 17:37Speaker 1: up against Israel. God is not going to be against
- 17:40Speaker 1: the Israelites warring against those people. And that goes for
- 17:45Speaker 1: pretty much every other nation. We don't just sit back
- 17:48Speaker 1: and let people like take our nations from us, but
- 17:51Speaker 1: I do think he is against needless war, and it
- 17:55Speaker 1: could be that one of the reasons God did not
- 17:58Speaker 1: allow David to do this, this one thing that David
- 18:01Speaker 1: always wanted to do, was because David may have been
- 18:05Speaker 1: too harsh in war. Now I don't know that for sure,
- 18:09Speaker 1: but there are some stories you know of David getting
- 18:13Speaker 1: pretty crazy in the middle of war, right. But more
- 18:17Speaker 1: so I would say that the main reason God didn't
- 18:21Speaker 1: want David to build a temple was because you can
- 18:24Speaker 1: see here that this would have been a huge distraction
- 18:27Speaker 1: to David. And if David has all of his attention
- 18:30Speaker 1: focused on building this house to Yahweh, you can imagine
- 18:34Speaker 1: the amount of damage that these aggressive neighbors of Israel
- 18:39Speaker 1: would have done during that time period. And so maybe
- 18:42Speaker 1: to avoid more senseless suffering of the Israelites, God wanted
- 18:47Speaker 1: David's attention to be more towards the handling of Israel's
- 18:52Speaker 1: foreign affairs rather than building the temple to God. And
- 18:56Speaker 1: that's kind of actually what Solemn himself alludes to. Remember
- 19:02Speaker 1: when he wrote that letter to Hiram, King of Tire
- 19:06Speaker 1: in First Kings five three. Here's what Solomon writes to Hiram.
- 19:11Speaker 1: You know that David my father could not build a
- 19:13Speaker 1: house for the name of Yahweh his God, because of
- 19:16Speaker 1: the wars which were around him on every side, until
- 19:19Speaker 1: Yahweh put his enemies under the souls of his feet.
- 19:22Speaker 1: But now Yahweh my God has given me rest on
- 19:25Speaker 1: every side, there is no enemy and no evil occurrence. Behold,
- 19:29Speaker 1: I intend to build a house for the name of Yahweh,
- 19:31Speaker 1: my God. As Yahweh spoke to David my father, saying,
- 19:34Speaker 1: your son, whom I will set on your throne in
- 19:36Speaker 1: your place, shall build the house for my name. That
- 19:40Speaker 1: right there is pretty clear that the reason God didn't
- 19:42Speaker 1: want David to build a temple was because there is
- 19:45Speaker 1: too many wars happening, and the building of the temple
- 19:49Speaker 1: would have taken David's attention off of these wars, and
- 19:52Speaker 1: more suffering would have happened in Israel. And that's more
- 19:57Speaker 1: so my viewpoint, because if you go back to First
- 20:00Speaker 1: Chronicles twenty two, even David alludes to that same thing
- 20:04Speaker 1: when he's talking to the princes of Israel as well.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Jumping all the way down to First Chronicles twenty two seventeen,
- 20:13Speaker 1: it says David also commanded all the princes of Israel
- 20:17Speaker 1: to help Solomon his son, saying, isn't Yahweh or God
- 20:20Speaker 1: with you? Hasn't he given you rest on every side?
- 20:24Speaker 1: For He has delivered the inhabitants of the land into
- 20:26Speaker 1: my hand, and the land is subdued before Yahweh and
- 20:29Speaker 1: before his people. Now set your heart and your soul
- 20:32Speaker 1: to follow Yahweh or God. Arise therefore and build the
- 20:35Speaker 1: sanctuary of Yahweh, God, to bring the ark of Yahweh's
- 20:38Speaker 1: covenant and the holy vessels of God into the house
- 20:40Speaker 1: that is to be built for Yahweh's name. So even
- 20:43Speaker 1: David himself alluded to the idea that the reason he
- 20:46Speaker 1: should not build this temple was because there were too
- 20:50Speaker 1: many wars taking place, and that was what David needed
- 20:53Speaker 1: to focus on, not to the building of God's temple
- 20:56Speaker 1: that could wait till there was a time of peace,
- 20:58Speaker 1: but secure furing Israel, making sure that Israel was safe. Now.
- 21:04Speaker 1: I don't know if David took things too far, and
- 21:07Speaker 1: it could have been also a punishment for David, But
- 21:10Speaker 1: once again, I'm more on the side of David needed
- 21:13Speaker 1: his attentions to be on securing Israel. But Jumping back
- 21:17Speaker 1: to verse eleven, David continues his speech to Solomon. He says, now,
- 21:23Speaker 1: my son, may Yahweh be with you and prosper you
- 21:26Speaker 1: and build the house of Yahweh or God, as he
- 21:29Speaker 1: has spoken concerning you. May Yahweh give you discretion and
- 21:32Speaker 1: understanding and put you in charge of Israel, so that
- 21:35Speaker 1: you may keep the law of Yahweh your God. Then
- 21:39Speaker 1: you will prosper if you observe to do the statutes
- 21:42Speaker 1: and the ordinances with which Yahweh gave Moses concerning Israel.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid, and don't be dismayed.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Now we know that Solomon, David's son became the wisest
- 21:55Speaker 1: man in history, and it could be that the reason
- 21:59Speaker 1: Solomon and asked for that wisdom was because of what
- 22:03Speaker 1: David said right here. He said in verse twelve, may
- 22:06Speaker 1: Yahweh give you discretion and understanding and put you in
- 22:11Speaker 1: charge of Israel, so that you may keep the law
- 22:13Speaker 1: of Yahweh R God. I do wonder if this speech
- 22:16Speaker 1: just touched Solomon's heart so much that the one thing
- 22:20Speaker 1: he asked God for was not for riches, not for fame,
- 22:25Speaker 1: not for a long life, but instead for wisdom, and
- 22:28Speaker 1: God in fact did give Solomon exactly what he asked for. Now, unfortunately,
- 22:35Speaker 1: we know that Solomon was kind of the start of
- 22:39Speaker 1: the idolatry that happened in Israel. Even though Solomon started
- 22:43Speaker 1: out really good, it was a very wise man, toward
- 22:48Speaker 1: the end of his life he kind of rejected a
- 22:50Speaker 1: lot of that and started building these little altars and
- 22:54Speaker 1: stuff to foreign little g gods. Because Solomon had a
- 22:59Speaker 1: woman problem. He had like a million wives, and all
- 23:03Speaker 1: these wives worshiped these other gods, and they were asking, Hey,
- 23:06Speaker 1: you know, can you build an altar to my God.
- 23:09Speaker 1: It doesn't have to be like the temple to Yahweh,
- 23:11Speaker 1: it doesn't have to be that grand. But I just
- 23:13Speaker 1: need a little altar, you know, to worship this little
- 23:16Speaker 1: statue that I have, So can you please do that?
- 23:18Speaker 1: And Solomon was like, oh, yeah, yeah, okay, all right,
- 23:20Speaker 1: I'll let you have that. It's not like God's temple.
- 23:24Speaker 1: This little alter doesn't matter much in the grand scheme
- 23:26Speaker 1: of things. That was what started idolatry in Israel, Solomon's
- 23:31Speaker 1: lack of being able to say no, and God punished
- 23:35Speaker 1: Solomon pretty badly for this, as well, and though David
- 23:40Speaker 1: gives Solomon this blessing, this encouragement, unfortunately Solomon did not
- 23:44Speaker 1: follow a lot of what David asked. Yes, he built
- 23:47Speaker 1: the temple, but he did not keep the ordinances that
- 23:52Speaker 1: Yahweh gave to Moses in the wilderness. Solomon broke every
- 23:57Speaker 1: single one of the laws for kings in Deuteronomy, whereas
- 24:02Speaker 1: David and even Saul that we know of, did not
- 24:06Speaker 1: break every single ordinance in Deuteronomy, but Solomon did. However,
- 24:11Speaker 1: David continues his speech here he says, now, behold, in
- 24:14Speaker 1: my affliction, I have prepared for Yaway's house one hundred
- 24:18Speaker 1: thousand talents of gold, one million talents of silver and
- 24:21Speaker 1: bronze and iron without weight, for it is in abundance. Now,
- 24:25Speaker 1: this would have been a lot of gold and a
- 24:27Speaker 1: lot of silver, like thousands of tons of it. And
- 24:31Speaker 1: we do know, you know, Hiram was helping David with
- 24:34Speaker 1: this project, so a lot of that could have come
- 24:36Speaker 1: from Hiram. Not to mention, Israel at this point in time,
- 24:41Speaker 1: was very secure. David was at the end of his life,
- 24:44Speaker 1: Solomon was about to take the throne, and David had
- 24:47Speaker 1: a lot of nations paying tribute to Israel on a
- 24:51Speaker 1: year to year basis, so much of this gold could
- 24:54Speaker 1: have come from them. But some people do wonder if
- 24:58Speaker 1: David was speaking rhetorically here where he's kind of just like, yeah,
- 25:03Speaker 1: I got you tons and tons of gold. But if
- 25:05Speaker 1: I were to take a guest, I would say David
- 25:07Speaker 1: was not being rhetorical, just because twice now in this
- 25:10Speaker 1: chapter it actually says the weight of all of this
- 25:15Speaker 1: stuff that David acquired for the temple was without number,
- 25:20Speaker 1: meaning it was weightless because of how much David was acquiring.
- 25:25Speaker 1: So I'm going to guess that these are real numbers
- 25:27Speaker 1: that David is throwing out there. Even though this number
- 25:30Speaker 1: here would have been thirty six hundred tons of gold
- 25:33Speaker 1: and about thirty thousand tons of silver. I think it
- 25:38Speaker 1: is possible that David actually did acquire that much gold
- 25:42Speaker 1: and silver, But I don't know. He could have been
- 25:44Speaker 1: speaking rhetorically, but I am not inclined to believe. So
- 25:48Speaker 1: then in verse fifteen, there are also workmen with you
- 25:51Speaker 1: in abundance, cutters and workers of stone and timber, and
- 25:54Speaker 1: all kinds of men who are skillful in every kind
- 25:57Speaker 1: of work. Notice here David's specifically wanted skillful workers. That
- 26:03Speaker 1: is something that I think David was very passionate about,
- 26:07Speaker 1: was people doing skillful work for God. Of the gold,
- 26:12Speaker 1: of the silver, the bronze, and the iron. There is
- 26:14Speaker 1: no number. Arise and be doing, and may Yahweh be
- 26:18Speaker 1: with you. And then in verses seventeen through nineteen, we
- 26:21Speaker 1: actually already went over these verses. But David also commands
- 26:26Speaker 1: the princes of Israel, you know, the other leaders of Israel,
- 26:30Speaker 1: to help Solomon build this temple to God, because of
- 26:34Speaker 1: how important this was for Israel to finally, after hundreds
- 26:40Speaker 1: and hundreds of years, finally have a proper place of
- 26:44Speaker 1: worship where God's presence was going to dwell in Israel.
- 26:49Speaker 1: And of course Jerusalem was a perfect location for this
- 26:53Speaker 1: temple because of its prime location in the center, in
- 26:58Speaker 1: the heart of Israel. So, yes, we are finishing up
- 27:07Speaker 1: the life of David. We only have a few more
- 27:09Speaker 1: chapters in first chronicles and then we move into second chronicles.
- 27:14Speaker 1: So I'm trying to go a little bit faster. If
- 27:17Speaker 1: you haven't noticed, we are in first and second Kings
- 27:20Speaker 1: for just under a year, and so now I'm trying
- 27:24Speaker 1: to make my seasons a little bit shorter only because
- 27:29Speaker 1: of the fact that when my seasons get really long,
- 27:33Speaker 1: some podcast platforms like refuse to show the entire season. Specifically,
- 27:38Speaker 1: Apple podcasts will only show one hundred of my episodes,
- 27:42Speaker 1: even though I have significantly more than one hundred episodes
- 27:45Speaker 1: in each season, Apple podcasts will only show one hundred.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Now that being said, I'm not going to rush through
- 27:51Speaker 1: the Bible. I'm going to talk about things as they come,
- 27:54Speaker 1: and if it happens that my seasons are a little
- 27:56Speaker 1: bit longer, then so be it. How Whoever, First Chronicles
- 28:01Speaker 1: so far has been chapter by chapter, mostly because the
- 28:07Speaker 1: chapters are talking about just the same theme. And even
- 28:11Speaker 1: in today's there is no good breakup point, if that
- 28:14Speaker 1: makes sense, And that's what I've found in First Chronicles
- 28:17Speaker 1: so far. I don't know if that's the same in
- 28:20Speaker 1: second Chronicles. We will find out once we get there.
- 28:22Speaker 1: But faithful listeners, check out that episode I did with
- 28:24Speaker 1: my sister on YouTube that is linked in the description.
