- 4:26Speaker 13: I could tell you a thousand tales of the men
- 4:28Speaker 13: and women who have hunted this evil bird. But every story.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Has the same ending.
- 4:35Speaker 9: Murder.
- 4:36Speaker 13: Listen to these incredible people, all consumed by their passionate
- 4:41Speaker 13: greed for the Maltese falcon.
- 4:44Speaker 4: What have you ever given me besides money?
- 4:47Speaker 13: Have you ever given me any of your confidence, any
- 4:49Speaker 13: of the truth?
- 4:50Speaker 3: Haven't you tried to buy my loyalty with money and
- 4:52Speaker 3: nothing else?
- 4:52Speaker 1: What else is there I.
- 4:53Speaker 9: Can buy you with?
- 4:55Speaker 14: We were talking about a lot more money than this.
- 4:57Speaker 10: There are more of us to be taken care of now.
- 4:59Speaker 4: Well, that might be, but I've got the falcon. You
- 5:02Speaker 4: may have the falcon, but.
- 5:03Speaker 1: We certainly have you.
- 5:06Speaker 4: I've taken all the writing from you I'm going to take.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Get up and shoot it out.
- 5:11Speaker 15: Stop it.
- 5:11Speaker 2: The police will be here any minute.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Now talk.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Oh, how can you accuse me of such a deal?

- 7:47Speaker 5: you've come to know and love.
- 7:49Speaker 9: Hey guys, I like bologna.
- 7:52Speaker 2: So I took some bologna and I wrapped it around
- 7:54Speaker 2: a hot dog. Rupert Popkin.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Mom!
- 8:01Speaker 2: I'm having a show down here! Keep it down.
- 8:05Speaker 9: I'm trying to tell all the people about this fancy

- 8:55Speaker 12: Movie Meltdown.
- 9:00Speaker 11: Too much?
- 9:01Speaker 2: No, you can never do too.
- 9:02Speaker 9: Much on this show.
- 9:04Speaker 12: You've finally found the place where you belong.
- 9:23Speaker 4: It's part of your problem, you know. You haven't seen
- 9:25Speaker 4: enough movies. All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 9:30Speaker 3: And now, on with the show.
- 9:35Speaker 5: It's time for Sofa Theater.
- 9:38Speaker 18: Brendan?
- 9:39Speaker 8: Emily?
- 9:40Speaker 9: I really screwed up.
- 9:42Speaker 5: Screwed up how?
- 9:43Speaker 4: The brick.
- 9:43Speaker 19: What?
- 9:44Speaker 4: I didn't know it was bad, but the pin's on
- 9:46Speaker 4: it now.
- 9:46Speaker 9: You gotta help me. Slow down now.
- 9:50Speaker 5: This isn't good.
- 9:52Speaker 4: No.
- 9:52Speaker 9: Emily said words I didn't know. Tell me if they catch.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Brick?
- 9:56Speaker 16: No.
- 9:57Speaker 11: Tug?
- 9:57Speaker 2: Tug might be a drink. Like milk and vodka.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Pin?
- 10:01Speaker 5: You know the kingpin.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Dope, right?
- 10:03Speaker 9: Big time.
- 10:04Speaker 1: What are you going to do?
- 10:05Speaker 2: She asked for my help.
- 10:06Speaker 18: I just wanna know if she's okay.
- 10:07Speaker 2: So what's first?
- 10:08Speaker 18: I'm gonna start shaking things up.
- 10:10Speaker 5: Really don't mind if you sit this one out.
- 10:17Speaker 11: My words but a whisper, your deafness a shout I.
- 10:24Speaker 9: May make you feel, but I can't make.
- 10:27Speaker 5: You think Your sperm's in the gutter, your love's in the.
- 10:35Speaker 11: Sink So you ride yourself over the fields And.
- 10:43Speaker 20: You make all your animal.
- 10:45Speaker 11: Deals And your wise men don't know how it feels
- 10:50Speaker 11: It'd be thick.
- 10:51Speaker 2: As a brick.
- 11:03Speaker 5: Brick.
- 11:05Speaker 9: Brick.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Brick.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Brick.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Brick.
- 11:12Speaker 9: Welcome back to Movie Meltdown Sofa Theater. This week's Sofa
- 11:15Speaker 9: Theater feature is Brick. The year is 2005. The director,
- 11:19Speaker 9: Rian Johnson. They plot according to IMDb, and it's actually
- 11:23Speaker 9: not bad. A teenage loner pushes his way into the
- 11:27Speaker 9: underworld of a high school crime ring to investigate the
- 11:30Speaker 9: disappearance of his ex-girlfriend. almost accurate there. So with that
- 11:35Speaker 9: spoiler alert, because we were deciding earlier, if this is
- 11:39Speaker 9: one that, you know, is, is something you can spoil
- 11:43Speaker 9: and it really, I mean, you can spoil the plot,
- 11:45Speaker 9: which I'm sure we will, but there's something going on
- 11:49Speaker 9: within the movie itself that regardless of if you know
- 11:53Speaker 9: the plot or not, you kind of have to experience.
- 11:55Speaker 9: And Hopefully by now you already have. If not, go
- 11:58Speaker 9: watch it.
- 11:59Speaker 2: I don't even know if I remember the plot. It's
- 12:00Speaker 2: been three weeks since I watched it again.
- 12:02Speaker 9: Yeah. I'm sure you'll piece it together.
- 12:06Speaker 1: All the plot bits and stuff, but once you know
- 12:11Speaker 1: what kind of world you're in, you know it's a dame.
- 12:16Speaker 2: It's all a dame.
- 12:17Speaker 9: Well, that's what I realized. This is a love it
- 12:21Speaker 9: or hate it kind of a movie. Right off the bat,
- 12:24Speaker 9: if you get this, you're going to get it. If
- 12:27Speaker 9: you don't, you'll be like, what the hell is this?
- 12:29Speaker 9: And you're going to turn it off more than likely.
- 12:31Speaker 9: So I don't know.
- 12:33Speaker 2: I think if you can get to the point of
- 12:35Speaker 2: putting it in the DVD player and pressing play or
- 12:38Speaker 2: pulling it up and you're good, I think you're going
- 12:40Speaker 2: to watch it because it's slick. It's smart.
- 12:44Speaker 9: I think we would get to that. And I think
- 12:46Speaker 9: a lot of people listening are in that same mind.
- 12:48Speaker 9: I think if you show this to Joe on the
- 12:50Speaker 9: street and he got midway into some of their lines
- 12:54Speaker 9: and I think they'd be like, what the hell is this?
- 12:57Speaker 2: And they'd change it. I think people who don't really
- 12:58Speaker 2: want to bother to watch a movie are not going
- 13:00Speaker 2: to like it.
- 13:01Speaker 9: Yeah, I think this is one of those... Because you
- 13:03Speaker 9: have to watch it.
- 13:03Speaker 2: That divides.
- 13:04Speaker 1: I mean, if you're not really watching it, it's not
- 13:07Speaker 1: going to work.
- 13:07Speaker 9: I just think it divides the people who are really
- 13:10Speaker 9: into movies and want to invest themselves in something like
- 13:13Speaker 9: this from... the casual viewer who wants to watch shit explode.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Right, it's not 13 going on 30.
- 13:20Speaker 1: It's not one of those movies where you kind of
- 13:22Speaker 1: know what kind of story it is so you can
- 13:25Speaker 1: kind of like be doing a few things and come
- 13:27Speaker 1: back and look at it.
- 13:29Speaker 9: You've got to be paying attention.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll get into that later.
- 13:34Speaker 9: Where do you want to begin?
- 13:37Speaker 2: Well, I think, you know, just the dialogue.
- 13:40Speaker 9: So at first, tip the bulls?
- 13:42Speaker 10: Nah, bulls, gum it.
- 13:43Speaker 18: And flash their dusty standards to the wide eyes.
- 13:45Speaker 19: Probably find some yig to pin.
- 13:47Speaker 18: Probably even the right one.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Trample the real tracks.
- 13:49Speaker 19: Scare the real players back into their holes.
- 13:51Speaker 2: If we're doing this, I.
- 13:52Speaker 5: Want the whole story. No cops. Not for a bit.
- 13:55Speaker 5: So what's first?
- 13:56Speaker 2: I don't know. Your mom still have that cell?
- 13:59Speaker 5: In her car.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Borrow it for a few days.
- 14:01Speaker 5: Give me the number. I'll wait for my word.
- 14:05Speaker 21: And, um.
- 14:07Speaker 5: Cover for me first.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I'll be a little late.
- 14:12Speaker 1: For me, it's a really funny movie. In a way,
- 14:18Speaker 1: it doesn't have funny beats. It doesn't have jokes. But
- 14:22Speaker 1: you get caught.
- 14:23Speaker 21: Up in it.
- 14:24Speaker 2: And then after a while, it's just funny how caught
- 14:29Speaker 2: up in it you get.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Because it's very much an old-fashioned noir set in an
- 14:38Speaker 1: unexpected place. place in high school. And so just every
- 14:42Speaker 1: now and then when it takes a little turn or
- 14:45Speaker 1: there's a little road bump in it, actually that makes
- 14:49Speaker 1: me think, actually there are just things in it that
- 14:51Speaker 1: are flat funny.
- 14:53Speaker 2: They are kind of jokes. But not a lot.
- 14:56Speaker 1: It's mostly deadpan and just every now and then you
- 14:59Speaker 1: find yourself laughing because it's like, this.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Is high school. But it kind of works.
- 15:05Speaker 1: And it's just unexpected and funny and you're not really given.
- 15:09Speaker 2: like a beat to laugh, or you couldn't sound... It's
- 15:14Speaker 2: just inherently funny.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Right.
- 15:17Speaker 2: And you're going to laugh in a different spot than
- 15:19Speaker 2: I am. Yeah. It's kind of like your tickle point
- 15:22Speaker 2: in the movie. Like, now it's funny to me, and
- 15:25Speaker 2: I'm going to get it.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Yeah, you just pick your own moment to go, this
- 15:30Speaker 1: is hilarious.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:33Speaker 1: You know.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I don't, it doesn't feel realistic to me, the entire film,
- 15:40Speaker 2: because I was so unaware of the world in high school.
- 15:47Speaker 2: I was, you know, these kids are light years beyond
- 15:51Speaker 2: me that there would be this underworld and there would
- 15:54Speaker 2: be these parties and there would be, I just, you know,
- 15:58Speaker 2: I was, I was just, Well, like Fred, you've referenced before.
- 16:03Speaker 2: There were a few moments of things that I did,
- 16:06Speaker 2: and the rest of the time I was just waiting around,
- 16:09Speaker 2: tying my shoes, or whatever else I needed to have.
- 16:13Speaker 2: I think that's specific kids, though. Yeah, maybe. A lot
- 16:17Speaker 2: of standing around waiting.
- 16:19Speaker 9: There's a lot of other kids. And again, I was
- 16:21Speaker 9: not one of those kids. And that's what I think
- 16:25Speaker 9: is sort of fascinating about this is like, it plays
- 16:30Speaker 9: out like, yeah, it's a Raymond Chandler novel, but at
- 16:32Speaker 9: the same time, it incorporates all the goings-on of a
- 16:36Speaker 9: high school life, not necessarily the day-to-day in the classroom stuff,
- 16:40Speaker 9: but all the other stuff that's going on of relationships
- 16:45Speaker 9: and the buying and selling of goods and or services
- 16:49Speaker 9: that are going on, and all of it is really
- 16:53Speaker 9: going on out there in high schools, and it's easily
- 16:55Speaker 9: as overwhelming and underhanded and the kind of stuff that
- 17:01Speaker 9: went on in your old noir kind of movies is
- 17:04Speaker 9: going on in day-to-day life. We just don't see it
- 17:06Speaker 9: that way right now unless you put on these special
- 17:10Speaker 9: brick glasses. And all of a sudden, again, you get
- 17:13Speaker 9: the joke of it. But at the same time, that's
- 17:16Speaker 9: what I thought was cool is that it doesn't take
- 17:19Speaker 9: anything that to me is that far-fetched the dialogue is,
- 17:23Speaker 9: but the things that are going on is shit. That's
- 17:26Speaker 9: probably going on in every town or at least within,
- 17:30Speaker 9: you know, a couple of towns in every state across
- 17:32Speaker 9: this country, probably the world over this kind of stuff
- 17:35Speaker 9: just happens. Right.
- 17:37Speaker 2: I'm not going to say that there aren't kids that
- 17:39Speaker 2: are more developed and mature and involved in things that
- 17:46Speaker 2: I was too sheltered to see. Cause that's happening. I
- 17:49Speaker 2: know that's happening. Um, It happened to a girl in my,
- 17:54Speaker 2: I mean, things like that. There was a girl in
- 17:56Speaker 2: my grade school that was, or middle school, I guess
- 17:59Speaker 2: is what you would call it, that was involved in
- 18:02Speaker 2: a ring of trouble and ended up, you know, passing
- 18:07Speaker 2: away as a result. And it's that shock of, that
- 18:12Speaker 2: was going on here?
- 18:12Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 18:13Speaker 2: That was going on here. You know, and she was considerably,
- 18:18Speaker 2: considerably in control. middle school terms, younger than me by
- 18:22Speaker 2: a few years. And that's even more of a revelation
- 18:24Speaker 2: that how is that possible? But I just wasn't there.
- 18:30Speaker 2: I mean, I guess I was watching, you know, movies.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I wasn't doing it.
- 18:36Speaker 9: I fell into a burning ring of trouble.
- 18:37Speaker 5: Did you?
- 18:37Speaker 9: Yes, it went down, down.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Well, you're a lot smarter than I am.
- 18:46Speaker 4: No.
- 18:47Speaker 2: No, I don't think that way.
- 18:50Speaker 9: Well, not on these choices.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think that explains the phenomena.
- 18:56Speaker 9: But no, I think, I mean, again, it may be
- 18:58Speaker 9: a little exaggerated for movie-wise, but again, a lot of
- 19:01Speaker 9: the basic goings-on, a lot of the drama that comes
- 19:05Speaker 9: into play is the kind of stuff that goes on in,
- 19:07Speaker 9: you know, in a lot of high schools. It's just
- 19:09Speaker 9: sort of exaggerated and shoved into this little plot line. But,
- 19:14Speaker 9: you know, some of the basic scenes are, like, stuff
- 19:16Speaker 9: that's getting played out every day.
- 19:18Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Except, I think, you know.
- 19:22Speaker 2: The murder thing. I mean, that's a pretty major event.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Or a kid O'Dean.
- 19:26Speaker 9: I wasn't even counting that. I was talking about just
- 19:28Speaker 9: the drama. The goings on. The life and death of
- 19:32Speaker 9: everything that goes on in kids' lives is kind of
- 19:36Speaker 9: represented here. And that part of the story is the
- 19:38Speaker 9: part that's sort of done for the movie. And again,
- 19:41Speaker 9: that happens too on occasion. But that's a little more rare,
- 19:45Speaker 9: I hope, really.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a pretty big amount.
- 19:48Speaker 9: But the other stuff, everything else that's going on in
- 19:50Speaker 9: the day-to-day events is kind of stuff that goes on
- 19:53Speaker 9: in people's lives. I hear some scary stories from people
- 19:56Speaker 9: from them growing up, and even now, so I mean,
- 19:59Speaker 9: there's that stuff going on, and I think it's funny
- 20:02Speaker 9: that when it's happening, I don't know that people realize
- 20:06Speaker 9: it as much. Again, this just sort of puts that
- 20:08Speaker 9: tint on it, and you're like, Oh yeah. Remember when
- 20:11Speaker 9: that guy got involved?
- 20:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:13Speaker 9: I mean, it's like, it sort of puts a different.
- 20:16Speaker 1: You know, discussion of it is making me think of, um,
- 20:20Speaker 1: I talked some kids into watching blue velvet recently.
- 20:23Speaker 9: I wrote that down. That's exactly what it reminded me of.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Although I think the guy was like back home from college,
- 20:29Speaker 1: but it had that feeling though of like a hearty
- 20:33Speaker 1: boys mystery.
- 20:35Speaker 9: Um, that, Well, it reminded me a lot of that, actually,
- 20:38Speaker 9: because it really is that, like, if you go back
- 20:41Speaker 9: and you even get that flashback scene of him, even
- 20:44Speaker 9: like two months before, he's kind of a clean-cut kid.
- 20:47Speaker 9: And he's sort of, you know, just like an innocent
- 20:49Speaker 9: at that point. Sort of like when he comes into
- 20:52Speaker 9: the story in Blue Velvet. And then midway in, he's just...
- 20:55Speaker 9: finds himself knee-deep in this mess and this underworld of
- 20:59Speaker 9: things going on that have always been going on, but
- 21:02Speaker 9: he was clueless out beside the football field, not paying
- 21:05Speaker 9: attention to them.
- 21:05Speaker 2: You know, characters get obsessed in that moment, too. They
- 21:10Speaker 2: have to keep going.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:12Speaker 2: That is the, and I don't want to use the
- 21:16Speaker 2: word heroic downfall of Blue Velvet, but he is obsessed
- 21:22Speaker 2: and cannot pull himself away from throwing himself back into
- 21:26Speaker 2: that world.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:27Speaker 2: When you could go, you know what? Fuck this. I'm done.
- 21:29Speaker 21: I'm going.
- 21:30Speaker 9: And this one, he does it almost on like sheer principle,
- 21:32Speaker 9: you know, because by, by midway into the, not even
- 21:35Speaker 9: that it's maybe a third of the way in the movie.
- 21:37Speaker 9: When we catch up with the opening scene, it's like,
- 21:40Speaker 9: it's already done. I mean, he could leave it and
- 21:43Speaker 9: who cares, but you know, it didn't affect him except
- 21:47Speaker 9: it affected him, you know? But I mean, he could
- 21:49Speaker 9: have been out of it and not gotten involved in
- 21:52Speaker 9: all the rest of the movie that he, crazy stuff
- 21:54Speaker 9: that he gets swept up in it's like he could
- 21:56Speaker 9: have just walked away and it is his like obsession
- 21:59Speaker 9: with finding what happened to her and and almost just
- 22:04Speaker 9: like finishing what she started it's like she came to
- 22:07Speaker 9: me for help and even though you know we've thrown
- 22:09Speaker 9: out the spoiler alert she's not here anymore you know
- 22:12Speaker 9: she's already dead i'm still going to yeah yeah again
- 22:16Speaker 9: if you watch the movie at all But yeah, I'm
- 22:18Speaker 9: still going to finish what she asked me to start.
- 22:21Speaker 9: She wanted help, and I'm going to find out what
- 22:24Speaker 9: was going on, even if it doesn't benefit her anymore.
- 22:27Speaker 9: It's like I'm finishing what she asked me to do.
- 22:30Speaker 2: When a man's partner is killed, he's supposed to do
- 22:33Speaker 2: something about it.
- 22:34Speaker 5: Damn straight.
- 22:35Speaker 2: That's right. Maltese Falcon. Maltese Falcon.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:38Speaker 9: Which this lifts several things from, actually.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Even just the speed of the dialogue. Yeah. Trying to
- 22:44Speaker 2: follow it is just like fun. in and of itself
- 22:48Speaker 2: that that slick nature of it is it is a
- 22:51Speaker 2: lot of fun these kids don't um they they talk
- 22:55Speaker 2: well and it is it it is.
- 22:57Speaker 9: A i mean it's a neo-noir right is yeah how
- 23:01Speaker 9: they now.
- 23:03Speaker 2: And that's that's fine it you know does it kind
- 23:07Speaker 2: of got and i think when seeing it this time
- 23:13Speaker 2: and maybe I should have stopped and thought and continued watching,
- 23:16Speaker 2: but when they were talking about his last name, his
- 23:19Speaker 2: last name is Fry in it. Is that correct? Brendan, Brendan,
- 23:24Speaker 2: something like that.
- 23:25Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 23:25Speaker 2: I kind of got a, a, um, uh, Ferris Bueller's
- 23:32Speaker 2: kind of vibe out of the, out of the film anyway,
- 23:34Speaker 2: that he was just listed as Brendan. Oh, okay. I
- 23:38Speaker 2: thought they used the name Fry. Um, Which doesn't matter,
- 23:42Speaker 2: other than when I was thinking about that.
- 23:45Speaker 9: Later, it shows a line that has him as, yeah, Fry.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Okay. That kids that are in control of their world
- 23:54Speaker 2: like Ferris Bueller, like the pen, I guess.
- 23:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:00Speaker 9: I sort of saw it as another reference. To me,
- 24:03Speaker 9: it's like the peanut's gone wrong. I was like, there's
- 24:07Speaker 9: most of the time midway into those episodes on the Peanuts,
- 24:10Speaker 9: I'm just like, where are these kids' parents? And I'm
- 24:13Speaker 9: the same thing here. It's like these kids do everything
- 24:16Speaker 9: on their own. With the exception of the Penn's mother
- 24:20Speaker 9: and the vice principal, you.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Don't see adults.
- 24:22Speaker 9: There are no adults. Adults don't exist in this world.
- 24:25Speaker 2: They are the adults.
- 24:27Speaker 9: They are just like in the Peanuts, though. It's like
- 24:29Speaker 9: the Peanuts just go off on their own little adventures
- 24:31Speaker 9: and do whatever the hell they want without adults really
- 24:33Speaker 9: coming into play most of the time. So I don't know.
- 24:37Speaker 9: I just thought that was a weird little connect in
- 24:40Speaker 9: the middle of it.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Speaking of Peanuts, and fans of this show will appreciate this. Fred,
- 24:45Speaker 2: you're the one that brought up the Peanuts where you
- 24:47Speaker 2: just show the two frames. Yeah, the three nuts. Watching
- 24:51Speaker 2: over the holidays, I watched a couple of the Peanuts.
- 24:54Speaker 2: There's two or three of them, shows. And every single
- 24:58Speaker 2: scene is a comic strip. They'll show one line, two
- 25:03Speaker 2: line jokes. One line, two lines. Their entire show is
- 25:07Speaker 2: just set up. I was remarking to my wife, I
- 25:11Speaker 2: was like, with the three kids, I wish you could
- 25:13Speaker 2: just remove that last kid and then just watch the shows.
- 25:17Speaker 9: You can.
- 25:17Speaker 2: God, they would be hilarious.
- 25:19Speaker 9: A little editing software. They're all set.
- 25:21Speaker 2: So I want somebody to do that because I don't
- 25:23Speaker 2: have the patience to sit down and do it. But anyway, yeah,
- 25:26Speaker 2: I can see, yeah, in the brick, not the brick. Yeah,
- 25:32Speaker 2: you can see there are no adults. other than the mom,
- 25:36Speaker 2: which the character that... I love that guy.
- 25:39Speaker 9: I know.
- 25:40Speaker 2: He made... I was okay with the movie for the
- 25:43Speaker 2: longest time, and then when he's in it, especially the
- 25:47Speaker 2: person that plays him, it's perfect. Perfect character, perfect part
- 25:52Speaker 2: of the movie, perfect reveal. The pin?
- 25:57Speaker 9: The pin, yeah.
- 25:57Speaker 2: The pin's kind of a local spook store. You know
- 26:00Speaker 2: the kingpin.
- 26:01Speaker 18: I've heard it.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Same thing.
- 26:02Speaker 6: Supposed to be old, like 26, lives in town.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Dope runner, right? Big time.
- 26:06Speaker 6: See, the pin pipes it from the lowest scrapper to
- 26:08Speaker 6: Brad Bramish himself.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Maybe. I mean, ask any dope right where the.
- 26:13Speaker 6: Junk sprang, and they'll say they scraped it off that,
- 26:15Speaker 6: who scored it off this, who bought it off someone
- 26:17Speaker 6: after four or five connections, the list always ends with
- 26:18Speaker 6: a pin. But I bet you you got every rat
- 26:22Speaker 6: in town together and said, show your hands if any
- 26:24Speaker 6: of them actually seen the pin, and you'd get a
- 26:25Speaker 6: crowd of full pockets.
- 26:26Speaker 18: You think the pin's just a tail to take whatever heat?
- 26:29Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 26:30Speaker 2: But what's first?
- 26:33Speaker 18: Show of hands.
- 26:34Speaker 1: I swear, when he starts going on about Tolkien, I mean,
- 26:41Speaker 1: that is from my childhood. That is from when I
- 26:44Speaker 1: was skipping school in ninth grade, and then the girls
- 26:48Speaker 1: you would hang out knew some guy that had an
- 26:50Speaker 1: apartment near, and it was some dumpy little place, and
- 26:53Speaker 1: he was a pothead.
- 26:54Speaker 2: But, you know, he was a thoughtful older guy, a
- 26:57Speaker 2: college guy.
- 26:58Speaker 9: Who dropped out. A really old guy, like 26?
- 27:00Speaker 2: Yeah, something like that. Or something like that.
- 27:04Speaker 1: But then he'd just want to get stoned and lay
- 27:07Speaker 1: around and say, man, I really like the way he
- 27:09Speaker 1: describes things.
- 27:12Speaker 6: See?
- 27:12Speaker 9: Some kids do have that life. It's just not you
- 27:15Speaker 9: or I, Greg. But that was one of my favorites.
- 27:18Speaker 2: He's really old, like 26. Exactly, yeah. And then the
- 27:22Speaker 2: lamp and the That is funny. In the car.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Yes.
- 27:26Speaker 9: I remember you pointing that out.
- 27:28Speaker 2: That was beautiful.
- 27:30Speaker 9: Well, everything about him almost makes no sense, but yet
- 27:34Speaker 9: is completely what he is. He almost needs that to
- 27:39Speaker 9: be anyone, because otherwise he's a skinny, dorky guy. So
- 27:45Speaker 9: you almost need this outfit and the cane. And the
- 27:48Speaker 9: fact that he has a big eagle sculpture sitting next
- 27:51Speaker 9: to this tiny little desk. Like everything about this, first
- 27:54Speaker 9: of all, you go in this horribly finished basement. And
- 27:57Speaker 9: I can say that.
- 27:58Speaker 2: I grew up in a finished basement.
- 28:00Speaker 9: So I just look at it and go, oh, God,
- 28:01Speaker 9: is that my house? So, yeah, it's this cheesy finished
- 28:06Speaker 9: basement with paneling on the walls.
- 28:08Speaker 2: We all went into that basement at some point.
- 28:10Speaker 9: Well, I mean, I kept looking at it going, God,
- 28:12Speaker 9: look how low the ceiling is.
- 28:13Speaker 5: Oh, no way.
- 28:13Speaker 9: I could reach up and touch my ceiling in the basement.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Yep, that's right.
- 28:16Speaker 9: That's exactly what it's like. So, yeah, this horrible finished basement.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Was that the same basement from The Wedding Singer?
- 28:22Speaker 2: I think it was.
- 28:26Speaker 9: But it's like, what sort of kingpin is in this
- 28:28Speaker 9: terrible finished basement?
- 28:30Speaker 2: But it's so true.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Like, those older guys that you knew when you were
- 28:36Speaker 1: in high school, like, looking back.
- 28:37Speaker 2: On it, it's your proportion changes. God, those guys were
- 28:40Speaker 2: unbelievable dorky losers.
- 28:43Speaker 9: Dorks.
- 28:45Speaker 1: But they were the guys who would hang out with
- 28:48Speaker 1: you when you were in high school.
- 28:49Speaker 9: With lame 16-year-olds. But yeah, I don't know. Everything about him,
- 28:54Speaker 9: like the whole outfit, the fact that he has to
- 28:58Speaker 9: have the... The room is almost bare, but he has
- 29:00Speaker 9: the giant eagle sculpture.
- 29:03Speaker 2: You know, he is a fully developed character.
- 29:08Speaker 4: Even....
- 29:11Speaker 2: Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character is a good character, but he really
- 29:15Speaker 2: is the guy that stuff just happens to. And he
- 29:18Speaker 2: reacts well. He's slick about reacting.
- 29:20Speaker 9: He still carries the movie for a moment.
- 29:23Speaker 2: But he's not a character in so much as, well,
- 29:28Speaker 2: in the same way that the pen is.
- 29:30Speaker 9: The pen's almost a caricature. He is so exaggerated in
- 29:35Speaker 9: what he's supposed to be.
- 29:37Speaker 2: But do you think somebody knew that guy?
- 29:41Speaker 9: Maybe pieces of him.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Well, it does give you that feeling.
- 29:46Speaker 1: He's so fully imagined that you start to think he
- 29:50Speaker 1: had to exist.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Because who could like... Nobody would have.
- 29:54Speaker 1: the imaginative nerve to make him up, because they go, no, yeah, right.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Or to put that sculpture there.
- 30:00Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Who goes, when they're writing in front of their computer,
- 30:04Speaker 2: who goes, well, I've got to have that in... No,
- 30:06Speaker 2: they saw it.
- 30:09Speaker 9: Or a lamp hanging like halfway in the room, like
- 30:12Speaker 9: a ceiling lamp.
- 30:13Speaker 2: It's one of those.
- 30:14Speaker 1: It's like when you watch a movie... And the plot
- 30:18Speaker 1: meanders and things happen and you think somebody's.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Writing a memoir here because.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Nobody would make anything up so aimless or random.
- 30:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:29Speaker 9: Well, he did say he stole the outfit from Barnabas
- 30:32Speaker 9: from Dark Shadows.
- 30:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:34Speaker 9: That's like exactly what he based that outfit on.
- 30:37Speaker 1: But it seems like the kid would almost like do
- 30:41Speaker 1: that too.
- 30:41Speaker 9: And I'm thinking, yeah, that's far-fetched, but look at the
- 30:44Speaker 9: way a lot of kids dress anyway. It's like, so
- 30:46Speaker 9: it's like, is it really any different than somebody who
- 30:50Speaker 9: goes to all the trouble that a lot of the
- 30:51Speaker 9: goth kids do or the punk kids do? It's like
- 30:54Speaker 9: they put equally as much effort into their appearance in
- 30:57Speaker 9: a different way, but it's equally as weird and exaggerated,
- 31:01Speaker 9: and so I'm like, yeah, it's still believable when you
- 31:06Speaker 9: compare it to some of the other stuff.
- 31:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:09Speaker 9: Such a funny movie. I do think, I mean... it's
- 31:15Speaker 9: really interesting, especially at the time. I remember this was
- 31:18Speaker 9: sort of the first thing I saw and really saw
- 31:21Speaker 9: Joseph Gordon-Levitt do something else. Like he was still just
- 31:24Speaker 9: that dorky kid from TV. And then this was sort
- 31:27Speaker 9: of the turning point. Like this was before he got,
- 31:30Speaker 9: he got hooked up with, you know, doing Inception or
- 31:33Speaker 9: he's in all of his movies now.
- 31:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:35Speaker 9: He's in Inception. He's going to be in the next Batman.
- 31:38Speaker 9: So yeah, now he's, Now he's doing, like, super A-list
- 31:41Speaker 9: kind of stuff. So, yeah, it's interesting to look back
- 31:44Speaker 9: just a few years, and, yeah, this is sort of his, like,
- 31:47Speaker 9: turning point, at least in my mind, that, like, this
- 31:50Speaker 9: was the first time I saw him and kind of went, oh, okay,
- 31:53Speaker 9: he'd done a couple other movies, but I don't think
- 31:55Speaker 9: I'd seen anything.
- 31:56Speaker 2: He was in that, what was the teenage kid with
- 32:02Speaker 2: Heath Ledger?
- 32:04Speaker 9: Oh, Ten Things I Hate About You.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Ten Things I Hate About You?
- 32:06Speaker 4: Yeah. No.
- 32:07Speaker 9: But again, he's the side character. He's still likable in that.
- 32:11Speaker 9: I like him.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Because I hadn't even watched Third Rock from the Sun.
- 32:17Speaker 2: For some reason, I watched that movie. I think because
- 32:21Speaker 2: somebody pulled that same old, oh, it's the taming of
- 32:25Speaker 2: the shrew.
- 32:26Speaker 15: You know how directors or writers will have a movie
- 32:33Speaker 15: and then they'll say, Oh, it's, it's a, it's a,
- 32:36Speaker 15: it's a King Lear.
- 32:37Speaker 2: No, it's a teen movie and it sucks. And part
- 32:41Speaker 2: of the plot was like that. And somebody pointed a
- 32:43Speaker 2: lot of that out after the fact, and you're using
- 32:45Speaker 2: it just to sell this movie. That's what I got
- 32:47Speaker 2: out of it. And I think I may have watched
- 32:48Speaker 2: it because of that. And I was like, I'm pissed
- 32:51Speaker 2: off at this maybe. And, and I remember taking away
- 32:55Speaker 2: from it that I really liked Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I was like, he,
- 32:59Speaker 2: he is that kid. I know that kid. Um, And
- 33:04Speaker 2: then I started watching old reruns because I liked John Lithgow,
- 33:09Speaker 2: but then I started watching old reruns.
- 33:10Speaker 9: He's so good in that, yeah. I mean, at least
- 33:13Speaker 9: in that type of thing, of him doing comedy, it's
- 33:16Speaker 9: like he's, you know... Well, again, John Lithgow's pretty awesome
- 33:19Speaker 9: as well, but those two are like the main... The
- 33:23Speaker 9: other two are just kind of the goofy ones, but yeah,
- 33:25Speaker 9: those two sort of have the real sense of humor
- 33:27Speaker 9: in that show.
- 33:28Speaker 2: He did such a good job of playing... an adult
- 33:31Speaker 2: playing a kid. Yeah. That, um, it's, it's bad that
- 33:36Speaker 2: it was on a TV show that not a lot
- 33:37Speaker 2: of people, I mean, it lasted several years.
- 33:39Speaker 9: That's the other thing I was like, that thing was
- 33:41Speaker 9: on for years. Like for something that wasn't a major hit,
- 33:45Speaker 9: it wasn't like it was Seinfeld at the time. It
- 33:47Speaker 9: was just, but yet it was on for like five
- 33:49Speaker 9: or six years.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Wasn't it?
- 33:50Speaker 3: It was.
- 33:51Speaker 21: Yeah.
- 33:52Speaker 2: How great of that though, to be able to spend
- 33:53Speaker 2: five or six years as a kid with John.
- 33:55Speaker 9: Yeah, that's true. Which is maybe why he's so good
- 33:58Speaker 9: by the time he gets to this point.
- 33:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 34:00Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Because he can be evil and turn around and be funny.
- 34:04Speaker 9: And yet, yeah, be like slapstick kind of funny when
- 34:07Speaker 9: need be.
- 34:08Speaker 2: I hope he gets... I hope people appreciate him more.
- 34:14Speaker 5: Than they should. John Lithgow.
- 34:16Speaker 9: I think he needs to be appreciated.
- 34:19Speaker 5: Anyway.
- 34:20Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 34:20Speaker 2: We're talking about Greg.
- 34:22Speaker 9: Greg.
- 34:23Speaker 2: But yeah, I don't know.
- 34:23Speaker 9: There was something about him doing that role that sort of... He.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Really.
- 34:29Speaker 9: carries it so much better than I would have expected
- 34:32Speaker 9: coming from his dorky TV background that I was just like,
- 34:35Speaker 9: I didn't know that he could pull a... Because again,
- 34:37Speaker 9: he has to play this super dramatic, even if we're
- 34:41Speaker 9: occasionally responding as though it's funny.
- 34:43Speaker 1: Yeah, everybody had to keep a straight face through it
- 34:45Speaker 1: and commit to it.
- 34:47Speaker 9: He has to pull that off, which I think he
- 34:49Speaker 9: does really well. He also does something I never would
- 34:52Speaker 9: have expected as this dorky little kid on the TV
- 34:55Speaker 9: show is He's kind of a badass. And he's still
- 34:59Speaker 9: the dorky little kid, but he finds a way to
- 35:02Speaker 9: still carry himself where when he's smacking down the druggie
- 35:07Speaker 9: in the parking lot, you buy it. And even more,
- 35:09Speaker 9: the time that I laughed was when he starts talking
- 35:13Speaker 9: shit to the football kid and just– he's a scrapper,
- 35:18Speaker 9: you know? It's like he does not back down. And
- 35:21Speaker 9: by the end, when he just belts him, yeah, I
- 35:24Speaker 9: thought that was the most awesome thing I think I'd
- 35:27Speaker 9: ever seen. When he just, yeah, he does not put
- 35:30Speaker 9: up with his shit and then continues to just not
- 35:33Speaker 9: go down. He just keeps coming back for more and
- 35:35Speaker 9: eventually beats him. That's just awesome.
- 35:38Speaker 2: You know, a lot of time about overthrowing people like
- 35:42Speaker 2: that is about... one upping them at the thing they're
- 35:46Speaker 2: good at. And that's what he does. He's, he's cool
- 35:48Speaker 2: enough and smart enough to realize this guy's thing is,
- 35:51Speaker 2: you know, barking louder than, Than everybody else. So I'm
- 35:57Speaker 2: going to bark louder than him. And he pulls it off.
- 36:00Speaker 9: Yeah, just calling him on it. And, you know, again,
- 36:02Speaker 9: with most people that, you know, have to be a
- 36:04Speaker 9: badass and pick on everybody else, it's like usually all
- 36:07Speaker 9: you have to do is call him on it.
- 36:08Speaker 1: That's the thing that carries that movie is making those
- 36:12Speaker 1: interactions credible and they're observed well enough rather than just
- 36:17Speaker 1: illustrated and you get the idea. They make it convincing.
- 36:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:23Speaker 9: I think that's what, yeah. Cause even in that, it's
- 36:25Speaker 9: like in a different circumstance, I'd be like, yeah, right.
- 36:28Speaker 9: But there's something about the way he plays that kid
- 36:31Speaker 9: that I'm like, no, he did it. He just beat
- 36:34Speaker 9: that dude.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Same thing.
- 36:36Speaker 9: Oh my. The other one I think is awesome is him.
- 36:38Speaker 9: Like when the guy comes at him with a knife
- 36:42Speaker 9: and again, him just kind of thinking on his feet
- 36:44Speaker 9: and like he, he continually like bests everyone that comes
- 36:47Speaker 9: at him and he gets his ass beat throughout this
- 36:50Speaker 9: movie as it goes on. But it's like, he's, again, like, like,
- 36:53Speaker 9: you know, your normal character in one of these noir stories,
- 36:57Speaker 9: they take a beating, but he, he hangs in there
- 37:00Speaker 9: and like, he keeps at it, you know, no matter what.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Do you think, um, the weight of death of the
- 37:08Speaker 2: death was handled as, as well as it should be?
- 37:12Speaker 2: I mean, do you feel the tone of the importance of, Hey,
- 37:16Speaker 2: somebody died is, is, is carried, even though it is
- 37:18Speaker 2: kind of funny throughout the movie, you know.
- 37:22Speaker 9: In a way, I think it, to me, that part felt, again,
- 37:27Speaker 9: referencing different movies, it felt a lot like River's Edge. Like,
- 37:32Speaker 9: it really was one of those, this should be a
- 37:35Speaker 9: big deal, but these kids are so messed up, they're
- 37:38Speaker 9: just kind of like, huh, I don't know how to
- 37:40Speaker 9: feel about that, you know? It's like, he was upset
- 37:42Speaker 9: about her, but he seemed like everybody else just sort
- 37:45Speaker 9: of got over it really fast.
- 37:47Speaker 4: Right.
- 37:47Speaker 9: And then, you know, just dealt with the other stuff
- 37:50Speaker 9: at hand. So I think it was more of that
- 37:52Speaker 9: that I took from it is like these kids, there's
- 37:54Speaker 9: so much stuff going on. They're so like caught up
- 37:57Speaker 9: in their own little world and desensitized everything to the
- 38:00Speaker 9: point where, you know, their friend gets killed and they're
- 38:02Speaker 9: just like, well, okay. You know, that happened to her,
- 38:06Speaker 9: but I've got this to worry about.
- 38:08Speaker 2: I think that's why he's able to get at everybody
- 38:12Speaker 2: else is because it is more important to him. He
- 38:16Speaker 2: does see the weight of it and he wants to,
- 38:20Speaker 2: in a way, honor her and her death or whatever
- 38:24Speaker 2: by completing it. And so therefore he's, he's already got
- 38:28Speaker 2: them beat.
- 38:29Speaker 9: And that's, I think, I guess, especially by the end,
- 38:31Speaker 9: I realized that was also kind of the drive because
- 38:34Speaker 9: he was also sort of pissed at her, you know,
- 38:36Speaker 9: I mean, she, she'd kind of screwed him over and
- 38:38Speaker 9: went off and left him for this world that she
- 38:41Speaker 9: was involved in basically. And you get that little flashback
- 38:45Speaker 9: and she's like, I'm in a different world now and
- 38:47Speaker 9: you can't beat it is what she says. And it's
- 38:49Speaker 9: almost like this, challenge of even when she's gone yeah
- 38:54Speaker 9: i can or i'm going to do my damnedest to
- 38:58Speaker 9: one-up everybody that's in your little world because you told
- 39:01Speaker 9: me i couldn't and i yeah i think that I
- 39:04Speaker 9: don't know, that seemed like a really driving force to
- 39:06Speaker 9: me that's never really spoken otherwise. But I think it
- 39:09Speaker 9: very much that, you know, you can't beat... You, you know,
- 39:13Speaker 9: our relationship isn't strong enough to beat this world that
- 39:15Speaker 9: I'm in. And he's like, fuck that, I'll still do it.
- 39:18Speaker 9: Even when you're gone, I'm still going to follow through
- 39:20Speaker 9: with this.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's a little bit like the motivating force
- 39:25Speaker 1: in The Vanishing.
- 39:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Which is very credible, and it makes.
- 39:30Speaker 1: i mean it makes a character who you only see
- 39:35Speaker 1: for maybe five minutes like loom large in the movie
- 39:39Speaker 1: just because um it's a question of you know whether
- 39:43Speaker 1: you're abandoning you're going to abandon.
- 39:46Speaker 9: Them or not Yeah, I think it becomes more about
- 39:48Speaker 9: that idea because it's almost in her best interest that
- 39:52Speaker 9: we don't see more scenes with her. Because the ones
- 39:54Speaker 9: I do, I'm like, she's not worth all this trouble.
- 39:57Speaker 2: She's not a.
- 39:58Speaker 9: Good character at all.
- 39:59Speaker 2: We don't care about her.
- 40:00Speaker 21: No.
- 40:01Speaker 2: We don't care that she's dead. I mean, as the viewer.
- 40:03Speaker 2: And we don't care.
- 40:06Speaker 9: And it seems like a real relationship because there are
- 40:08Speaker 9: those people you know or have been in this situation
- 40:11Speaker 9: where after the fact you look at it and go,
- 40:14Speaker 9: What was I so enamored with? You know, why did
- 40:16Speaker 9: I stick with that for as long as I did
- 40:18Speaker 9: when really they weren't a good person or there was
- 40:21Speaker 9: nothing there? Or, you know, why was I so caught
- 40:24Speaker 9: up in what was going on?
- 40:26Speaker 2: Who did I think they were?
- 40:27Speaker 9: Yeah, a little distance and you're just like, oh, God.
- 40:30Speaker 9: You're like, why did I want to have anything to
- 40:32Speaker 9: do with any of what was going on there?
- 40:35Speaker 2: You know, people get blind to the ideal person. And
- 40:40Speaker 2: obtaining that ideal.
- 40:41Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 40:42Speaker 2: And don't even pay attention to the reality of whatever
- 40:46Speaker 2: that prize is.
- 40:47Speaker 9: That's what I thought was kind of cool in this
- 40:49Speaker 9: little back and forth between all the other characters. Because
- 40:53Speaker 9: it's like all the other characters saw her for who
- 40:55Speaker 9: she really was. And how messed up she was. And how, like,
- 40:59Speaker 9: it was. You know, that's why I think some of
- 41:01Speaker 9: them aren't as upset either.
- 41:02Speaker 5: Right.
- 41:02Speaker 9: Because they're like, well, we saw this coming. Where she's
- 41:05Speaker 9: still sort of this ideal thing in his mind.
- 41:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:08Speaker 9: And that, you know, true love that won't go away. And,
- 41:11Speaker 9: you know, he hasn't been around her for a while.
- 41:14Speaker 9: And then all of a sudden she's just destroyed. So
- 41:16Speaker 9: I think there is, yeah, I think that's part of
- 41:20Speaker 9: what I think.
- 41:20Speaker 2: That's all very, very credible.
- 41:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Because, I mean, whenever anybody really cares about anybody, you
- 41:27Speaker 2: can always go, well, why? I mean, there's a thousand
- 41:31Speaker 2: other people anywhere you go.
- 41:32Speaker 1: I mean, why?
- 41:33Speaker 9: And usually after the fact, your friends were like, yeah,
- 41:36Speaker 9: we didn't really see it at all. You know, afterwards,
- 41:40Speaker 9: you're always like, yeah, we didn't want to tell you, but...
- 41:43Speaker 9: So I think that has that real feel, too, that
- 41:46Speaker 9: everybody else around him sees her for who she really is,
- 41:49Speaker 9: and he's blind to it.
- 41:51Speaker 1: He's blind to it, but then, I don't know. I mean,
- 41:53Speaker 1: that's always how it is. I mean, nobody's really that
- 41:56Speaker 1: great anyway.
- 41:58Speaker 9: But if you thought that, why would you be with them?
- 42:01Speaker 9: So you do have to be in that mindset of...
- 42:04Speaker 9: of there is something that keeps me with this person.
- 42:06Speaker 1: There's something about them that means something to you and,
- 42:11Speaker 1: and you can't help it.
- 42:13Speaker 21: Definitely.
- 42:14Speaker 1: And that, that thing about, you know, how he keeps
- 42:16Speaker 1: winning is he cares more.
- 42:18Speaker 2: That's so true.
- 42:19Speaker 1: I mean, I'm, uh, the only like experience I have
- 42:23Speaker 1: with fighting and violence goes back to that period of,
- 42:27Speaker 1: time in my life, and really, you did not want
- 42:29Speaker 1: to be in a fight with somebody when they were
- 42:32Speaker 1: more angry than you were. I mean, you needed to
- 42:36Speaker 1: be able to be mad, because, I mean, you can't
- 42:39Speaker 1: be in a fight when you don't want.
- 42:41Speaker 2: To hurt somebody. You're going to lose. Well, the other
- 42:46Speaker 2: thing is... You have to be strongly motivated. You don't
- 42:50Speaker 2: want to... be in a fight with someone who has
- 42:53Speaker 2: nothing to lose.
- 42:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:55Speaker 2: And you don't want to be in a fight with
- 42:56Speaker 2: has a great amount to lose. Yeah. Both, both at
- 43:00Speaker 2: the same time.
- 43:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 43:00Speaker 9: Well, that's again, back to what we'd said weeks ago
- 43:05Speaker 9: on the, on the funny games.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:08Speaker 9: That was that same thing. I was like, when you
- 43:10Speaker 9: don't care about anything, you're also kind of powerful. So
- 43:13Speaker 9: to this, you know, with him, it's like when she
- 43:16Speaker 9: was the only thing he cared about, now all of
- 43:18Speaker 9: a sudden you see this change in him and he's
- 43:20Speaker 9: not that clean cut kid he is in the flashbacks
- 43:22Speaker 9: he doesn't care so he's gonna talk shit to the
- 43:25Speaker 9: football player because the only thing he had he's the
- 43:28Speaker 9: only thing i loved is what he says to her
- 43:30Speaker 9: it's like you take that away at that point he's
- 43:32Speaker 9: kind of like fuck it you know it's just like
- 43:34Speaker 9: i will immerse myself in the middle of this and
- 43:37Speaker 9: if i get killed in the process who cares because
- 43:39Speaker 9: the only thing i cared about is gone now so
- 43:42Speaker 9: it is sort of that power of you know once
- 43:44Speaker 9: you don't care once you take away your inhibitions because
- 43:48Speaker 9: you know there's nothing left for you yeah it kind
- 43:50Speaker 9: of makes you powerful in a weird twisted way.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Yeah there's a lot of truth and in that movie
- 43:59Speaker 1: and in the the noir genre in general did i
- 44:03Speaker 1: say in general the.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Genre in general the genre in general.
- 44:08Speaker 9: It is fun how much it it finds a way
- 44:11Speaker 9: to tie in so much. The first thing I notice
- 44:14Speaker 9: is those loafers he's wearing. I'm like, no high school kid,
- 44:20Speaker 9: maybe a few in the theater department, but no normal
- 44:23Speaker 9: kid like he is would ever be wearing those kind
- 44:26Speaker 9: of shoes, but a gumshoe in the 40s would be
- 44:29Speaker 9: wearing those scuffed up loafers. I thought that was kind
- 44:33Speaker 9: of a cool little touch to it.
- 44:35Speaker 2: My freshman year in high school, we couldn't wear tennis
- 44:39Speaker 2: shoes anymore. And everyone else had Eastlands then. That was
- 44:45Speaker 2: when they were the craze. And I intentionally didn't want Eastlands.
- 44:52Speaker 2: And my mom said, well, you're going to have to
- 44:54Speaker 2: buy something. And I just wouldn't go out and buy
- 44:56Speaker 2: because I didn't want to make that commitment. And she
- 44:58Speaker 2: came home with a pair of heavy penny loafers, black.
- 45:04Speaker 2: And I hated them at the time. But then there
- 45:06Speaker 2: was a friend of mine later in life. He said...
- 45:09Speaker 2: you know what I always liked about you? You didn't
- 45:12Speaker 2: wear the Eastland and you wore those big, awful penny
- 45:15Speaker 2: loafers and you didn't care.
- 45:17Speaker 5: And I was like, I.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Did care. But I'm not going to let you know that.
- 45:26Speaker 5: That's awesome.
- 45:27Speaker 2: So, yeah. I mean, it's amazing one of those wins
- 45:31Speaker 2: that you get by default and you don't realize it.
- 45:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:36Speaker 9: So.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Definitely.
- 45:38Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Anyway, so I was one of the kids that would
- 45:40Speaker 2: wear the loafers.
- 45:41Speaker 1: That reminds me of a guy I used to work
- 45:43Speaker 1: with who, uh, he said he and his roommate, like,
- 45:46Speaker 1: were slobs, but they were setting up a birthday party
- 45:50Speaker 1: for a friend, and they were hiring strippers. And so
- 45:54Speaker 1: they start cleaning up the place.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Because strippers were coming over. Yeah. We're going to have
- 45:59Speaker 2: this thing. Strippers are coming. I'll take the bathroom.
- 46:02Speaker 19: You do the.
- 46:02Speaker 2: And they clean up.
- 46:04Speaker 1: And the guy, he was kind of a jerk on
- 46:07Speaker 1: I had trouble relating to him. He told me, before
- 46:10Speaker 1: I ever saw the South Park movie, I believe he
- 46:13Speaker 1: told me the entire thing orally, but laughing all the
- 46:16Speaker 1: way through it, so I couldn't understand what he was saying.
- 46:21Speaker 1: But he had the strippers come over, and then midway
- 46:23Speaker 1: through the evening, he said, Oh.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Look, this chick only has three fingers on her hand.
- 46:32Speaker 1: And I'm like, dude, that's so rude when somebody's naked
- 46:35Speaker 1: to point out something.
- 46:36Speaker 2: They're imperfectionists. He was like, oh, she didn't care. She's
- 46:40Speaker 2: not going to act like she cares. She's the one
- 46:43Speaker 2: to get paid. Yeah, you're a jerk, man.
- 46:47Speaker 1: And he was telling me, he read War and Peace.
- 46:49Speaker 1: He said, I just couldn't take that one annoying guy.
- 46:52Speaker 2: I'm like, Pierre? What? Yeah, that guy. He just got
- 47:00Speaker 2: on my nerves. He was so annoying. He was a
- 47:03Speaker 2: funny guy. He was from Louisville.
- 47:05Speaker 1: He had straight black hair, and he wore big foreign
- 47:10Speaker 1: student glasses.
- 47:11Speaker 2: He looked like the Japanese.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Guy on Gilligan's Island who didn't know the war was over.
- 47:18Speaker 1: And for some reason in college, he took Mandarin. That
- 47:22Speaker 1: was his thing. But he couldn't understand. People always thought
- 47:26Speaker 1: he was a foreign student. And they would speak to him, and.
- 47:30Speaker 2: He said, I don't get it. Why do people always
- 47:32Speaker 2: think that? And I'm like, I didn't want to tell him.
- 47:36Speaker 1: I think it's the foreign student glasses.
- 47:42Speaker 2: But he spoke Mandarin.
- 47:43Speaker 1: He was out at a bar one night, and some
- 47:45Speaker 1: guy was saying he had these instructions in Chinese, and
- 47:49Speaker 1: he needed them translated. And he's like, yeah, I can
- 47:51Speaker 1: do that. I can do that for you. And then
- 47:54Speaker 1: the guy's wife leans over and says, how long have
- 47:57Speaker 1: you been in this country?
- 47:59Speaker 2: He's like, about 26 years.
- 48:04Speaker 1: I'm beginning to learn your ways. It really frustrated him,
- 48:09Speaker 1: but I could never just bust out and tell him, dude,
- 48:13Speaker 1: it's the look. And he met Lynn once. He came
- 48:18Speaker 1: back from lunch, and he said, I think I met
- 48:21Speaker 1: your wife, but I don't know what I did, man.
- 48:25Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm sorry, whatever. And he mumbled, too.
- 48:30Speaker 2: So I hear his side of the story.
- 48:33Speaker 1: He meets my wife. She was at Mid-City Mall with
- 48:35Speaker 1: the kids. He walks up and says, oh, hi, are
- 48:39Speaker 1: you Fred's wife? And he doesn't know.
- 48:44Speaker 2: She seems confused.
- 48:45Speaker 1: But I piece together the dialogue from hearing both versions
- 48:50Speaker 1: of it and what happened.
- 48:52Speaker 2: I asked her, did you meet this guy?
- 48:54Speaker 1: She's like, no, there was some foreign student came up
- 48:58Speaker 1: and asked me if I spoke French. And I didn't really,
- 49:03Speaker 1: but I don't know. I couldn't really help him. I
- 49:05Speaker 1: couldn't understand what he was saying. So what he said was, hi,
- 49:10Speaker 1: are you Fred's wife? And she thought he said, do
- 49:14Speaker 1: you speak French?
- 49:17Speaker 2: And she said, no. really a little bit. Can I
- 49:23Speaker 2: help you?
- 49:25Speaker 9: She says that every time someone asks, really? I mean, truthfully,
- 49:30Speaker 9: a little bit, a little bit.
- 49:31Speaker 19: Really?
- 49:32Speaker 9: Can I help you?
- 49:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:34Speaker 2: So anyway, that's that, that story.
- 49:36Speaker 1: It reminds me because I don't know, uh, the guy
- 49:40Speaker 1: seems like he could have walked into the world of
- 49:43Speaker 1: brick and found a place somewhere in there.
- 49:48Speaker 9: Next to brain.
- 49:49Speaker 2: Yes.
- 49:50Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 49:51Speaker 2: Does everybody have that super smart friend?
- 49:53Speaker 9: I think so.
- 49:54Speaker 2: I don't have one. That's not fair. I want my
- 49:56Speaker 2: super smart friend.
- 49:57Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 49:58Speaker 9: Well, I just like, again, it felt very noir that,
- 50:01Speaker 9: you know, there's always that guy that they go to
- 50:03Speaker 9: that gets them what they need or that is their
- 50:05Speaker 9: connection and is the information and, So he just sort
- 50:08Speaker 9: of fit all of these kind of crammed into one guy.
- 50:11Speaker 9: And then you definitely have the femme fatale.
- 50:14Speaker 2: You're quite a pill.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Uh-uh.
- 50:17Speaker 2: Where are you going?
- 50:18Speaker 4: Home.
- 50:21Speaker 22: Why'd you take a powder the other night?
- 50:23Speaker 19: Same reason I'm taking one now.
- 50:25Speaker 4: Hold it.
- 50:27Speaker 2: I want to help you.
- 50:28Speaker 4: Go away.
- 50:32Speaker 18: Look, I can't trust you. You ought to be smart
- 50:34Speaker 18: enough to know that. I didn't shake up the party
- 50:36Speaker 18: to get your attention, and I'm not healing you to
- 50:38Speaker 18: hook you. Your connections could help me, but the bad
- 50:42Speaker 18: baggage they bring and make it zero-sum gain, or even
- 50:44Speaker 18: hurt me. Better off coming at it clean.
- 50:47Speaker 2: I wouldn't have to lead you in by the hand.
- 50:49Speaker 18: I can't trust you.
- 50:51Speaker 4: Brad was a sap. You weren't. You're with him, so
- 50:53Speaker 4: you're playing him. So you're a player.
- 50:56Speaker 18: If you're behind me, I'd have to tie one eye
- 50:58Speaker 18: up watching both of your hands.
- 50:59Speaker 2: I can't spare it.
- 51:02Speaker 4: You're not Brad. I don't know.
- 51:04Speaker 9: Yeah. Laura definitely is, but you've even got those other ones.
- 51:08Speaker 9: You've got, like, the theater girl that's, like, the past
- 51:11Speaker 9: flame Femme Fatale thrown in as, like.
- 51:14Speaker 2: An extra little deal to mess with.
- 51:16Speaker 9: Oh, yeah. That's the one, like, all the scenes with her,
- 51:19Speaker 9: I was like, that's the drama. No pun intended since
- 51:23Speaker 9: she's in the drama department. But I'm just like, she
- 51:26Speaker 9: is the kind of girl that is in everybody's high school.
- 51:29Speaker 9: And everything about her really is, like, drama.
- 51:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:32Speaker 9: And she knows it, and she likes it, and kind
- 51:35Speaker 9: of feeds off of it and toys with other people.
- 51:37Speaker 2: She stirs stuff up.
- 51:39Speaker 9: Yeah, and that's the part that I was like, this
- 51:42Speaker 9: kind of stuff is going on in different degrees, not
- 51:44Speaker 9: quite as exaggerated, but that stuff is all going on
- 51:48Speaker 9: in every high school.
- 51:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:51Speaker 1: And what I remember about her, that type, in my experience,
- 51:57Speaker 1: is she's always stirring up drama, and it somehow, it like,
- 52:01Speaker 1: She's like that person who doesn't get in wrecks, but
- 52:04Speaker 1: she causes them.
- 52:06Speaker 3: Nice.
- 52:07Speaker 2: You know, she's through.
- 52:08Speaker 1: The intersection when the other cars hit each other. But
- 52:12Speaker 1: then she gets other people caught.
- 52:15Speaker 2: Up in it, and they do it, and they get burned.
- 52:17Speaker 9: Oh, of course. That's her job.
- 52:20Speaker 1: Yeah. It's like her friends will start to get in
- 52:23Speaker 1: on it and try and stir up stuff.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Oh, and it'll burn.
- 52:26Speaker 1: Bite them in the ass because they don't know how
- 52:30Speaker 1: to cause drama without.
- 52:32Speaker 2: It sticking to them.
- 52:33Speaker 9: Being swept up in it.
- 52:35Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot of truth in that character.
- 52:37Speaker 9: And the other one I thought, the character that I
- 52:39Speaker 9: was like, okay, now it's so much, I mean, it's
- 52:43Speaker 9: so hitting every beat of the noir kind of thing.
- 52:48Speaker 9: The vice principal guy is, he's the cop.
- 52:52Speaker 10: We know you're clean. And you've.
- 52:57Speaker 22: Despite your motives, you've always been an asset to this office.
- 53:01Speaker 22: And you're a good kid.
- 53:03Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 53:07Speaker 10: I want to run some names past you. Hold it.
- 53:11Speaker 10: We're not done here.
- 53:11Speaker 19: I was done here three months ago. I told you
- 53:13Speaker 19: then I'd give you Jer, and that was that. I'm
- 53:15Speaker 19: not your inside line, and I'm not your boy.
- 53:17Speaker 10: That's not very... You know what I'm in if the
- 53:19Speaker 10: wrong Yegg saw me pulled in here?
- 53:20Speaker 5: What are you in?
- 53:23Speaker 4: No.
- 53:24Speaker 19: And no more of these informal chats either. You got
- 53:26Speaker 19: a discipline issue with me? Write me up or suspend me.
- 53:30Speaker 19: I'll see you at the parent conference.
- 53:31Speaker 3: Hold on.
- 53:33Speaker 22: I could write you up for talking back to a VP.
- 53:36Speaker 22: And for looking at me in that threatening way. I
- 53:40Speaker 22: would exercise a little tact, Mr.
- 53:42Speaker 2: Fry.
- 53:43Speaker 5: You can't pull a.
- 53:44Speaker 10: Stunt like that unless there's something I need you for.
- 53:48Speaker 10: So is there?
- 53:50Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 53:51Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 53:53Speaker 10: Maybe there's something you need from me.
- 53:57Speaker 4: Maybe.
- 53:57Speaker 19: All right, I need you off my back completely for
- 54:03Speaker 19: the next few weeks. There might be some heat soon.
- 54:05Speaker 10: If it's something I can't cover, I won't go to
- 54:08Speaker 10: bat for you.
- 54:09Speaker 19: If I get caught like that, it's curtains anyway. I
- 54:11Speaker 19: can't have brass cutting me favors in public. Just letting
- 54:14Speaker 19: you know now so you don't come kicking in my
- 54:15Speaker 19: homeroom door once trouble starts.
- 54:20Speaker 1: Okay.
- 54:22Speaker 5: Okay, here's what I can do.
- 54:25Speaker 10: I won't pin you for anything you aren't caught at.
- 54:27Speaker 10: But if anything comes up with your prints on it,
- 54:29Speaker 10: I can't help you. Also, if I get to the
- 54:31Speaker 10: bottom of whatever this is, and it gets too hot,
- 54:35Speaker 10: and you don't deliver, we're going to need someone to
- 54:37Speaker 10: turn over, police-wise.
- 54:41Speaker 5: I'll have you.
- 54:43Speaker 10: So there better be some meat at the end of this,
- 54:44Speaker 10: like you say. Or at least a fall guy.
- 54:48Speaker 9: He has him in his office. He's giving him that,
- 54:51Speaker 9: you've got the goods on me, and we're going to
- 54:54Speaker 9: use you. I won't come down on you. I mean,
- 54:56Speaker 9: it's almost word for word what every cop behind a
- 54:59Speaker 9: desk gives our hero in every movie. It's like he's
- 55:03Speaker 9: playing the cop role. And the whole thing, it's like
- 55:06Speaker 9: the way that they present it is like, I'm going
- 55:08Speaker 9: to tell the police this in a noir movie, and
- 55:12Speaker 9: I'm going to tell the principal about you in this movie.
- 55:14Speaker 9: But it's exactly the same. I thought that was kind
- 55:17Speaker 9: of well done, and again, just sort of meshing these
- 55:21Speaker 9: worlds into this weird little combination.
- 55:24Speaker 1: And that's what makes you laugh, is when you see those, oh, that's...
- 55:28Speaker 1: It's that.
- 55:31Speaker 9: Well, there's that story stuff, and then I was just
- 55:34Speaker 9: going to go into how impressed I was with ryan
- 55:37Speaker 9: johnson direction wise especially for his first movie oh yeah
- 55:41Speaker 9: this this was his first feature it's.
- 55:45Speaker 1: Well it's so well done for a guy who doesn't
- 55:48Speaker 1: know how to spell his own name it's just amazing.
- 55:51Speaker 9: Take that ryan yeah but yeah i mean there's so
- 55:54Speaker 9: many different shots along the way that i'm like that's
- 55:57Speaker 9: really creative and again maybe it's because he's so early
- 56:01Speaker 9: on it's like sometimes maybe you have those ideas caught
- 56:04Speaker 9: up and You haven't worked in a studio system long
- 56:06Speaker 9: enough for them to beat the originality out of you.
- 56:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:10Speaker 9: So, yeah.
- 56:10Speaker 1: Well, and two, just once you have more money, sometimes
- 56:15Speaker 1: it's hard.
- 56:17Speaker 2: You have too many options.
- 56:19Speaker 1: It becomes like shopping, and shopping takes the creativity out
- 56:23Speaker 1: of it.
- 56:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 56:27Speaker 2: I don't always like to have too much money. Yeah,
- 56:29Speaker 2: me neither.
- 56:30Speaker 1: I've just heard from people who talk about recording back
- 56:34Speaker 1: in the old days, And they would have to get
- 56:35Speaker 1: creative and do things to get the sound they want.
- 56:38Speaker 1: And now that you can just do anything you want,
- 56:43Speaker 1: it's not the same. It doesn't engage your creativity in
- 56:46Speaker 1: the same way. Just to go, oh, well, let's tweak
- 56:50Speaker 1: these knobs this way or let's tweak these knobs the
- 56:53Speaker 1: other way. And so a lot of early recordings have
- 56:59Speaker 1: a kind of charm to them that's.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Hard to imitate. when it gets to this easy think
- 57:08Speaker 2: about like when you talk about sound like when you
- 57:11Speaker 2: when you talk about somebody that's playing with sound that
- 57:15Speaker 2: we take for granted now think about the things that
- 57:17Speaker 2: phil specter was doing with music that it wasn't genius
- 57:22Speaker 2: as far as what was written or or the musicality
- 57:27Speaker 2: of it but the sound that Do you mean the
- 57:32Speaker 2: wall of sound?
- 57:33Speaker 4: Yes.
- 57:33Speaker 9: That sound?
- 57:35Speaker 15: And it was.
- 57:35Speaker 2: I mean, that wasn't just, well, we're going to do
- 57:39Speaker 2: this now. That was like a mad scientist type of,
- 57:45Speaker 2: I've got an idea. There was never anything before that.
- 57:49Speaker 2: And you hear those songs now, especially like when, what's
- 57:53Speaker 2: the Christmas one that comes on that was the Ronnie Spector?
- 58:00Speaker 9: Anyway.
- 58:01Speaker 2: But when you hear that, you're like, oh. And it's
- 58:03Speaker 2: got that distinct sound. You could press a button and
- 58:08Speaker 2: have that sound now, but back then you couldn't do that.
- 58:12Speaker 2: You had to layer and layer and layer. Whatever happened
- 58:15Speaker 2: to his noir drama?
- 58:18Speaker 5: That was a noir drama.
- 58:19Speaker 9: That was a noir drama.
- 58:21Speaker 2: What happened to him? Did he get off? I believe
- 58:25Speaker 2: he did.
- 58:26Speaker 9: I don't even remember at this point.
- 58:30Speaker 2: But he is the mad scientist.
- 58:32Speaker 9: He is. Look at his hair.
- 58:34Speaker 2: I get you. I'm being bad with derailing tonight. I'm sorry.
- 58:42Speaker 2: Or good with it, depending on how you.
- 58:45Speaker 9: Well, I think it is. It does sort of make
- 58:47Speaker 9: you more creative when you have to be that way.
- 58:50Speaker 9: When you don't have any way or anybody else there
- 58:53Speaker 9: to help you. When you're like, okay, I've got to
- 58:55Speaker 9: figure out how to... transition from this scene to that
- 58:58Speaker 9: scene or i've got to show the passage of time
- 59:01Speaker 9: and instead of you know some elaborate montage i'm just
- 59:04Speaker 9: gonna sit on the clock as it switches over to
- 59:08Speaker 9: hours later and go on with that.
- 59:10Speaker 2: About some of those things like he filmed some of
- 59:12Speaker 2: the scenes.
- 59:14Speaker 9: Backwards yeah yeah some of the again especially when he
- 59:17Speaker 9: gets into the weird like dream scenes you see a.
- 59:19Speaker 2: Car coming yeah when the camera comes in front of.
- 59:22Speaker 1: It they did that by Reversing the car away from
- 59:26Speaker 1: the camera.
- 59:27Speaker 2: Yeah, really clever stuff.
- 59:29Speaker 9: And the kind of in-the-camera kind of stuff because you
- 59:33Speaker 9: don't have to pay for that. It's sort of playing
- 59:35Speaker 9: with what you have at your disposal, which is not
- 59:38Speaker 9: that much at this point. I mean, it took him,
- 59:40Speaker 9: I think, six years to get funding for this. Like,
- 59:43Speaker 9: he wrote it. that far back and then spent six
- 59:47Speaker 9: years trying to get money to put all this together.
- 59:49Speaker 1: Some of it was like family money they came into
- 59:53Speaker 1: and that got other people to invest in the pressure
- 59:56Speaker 1: on him you know must have been pretty intense.
- 59:58Speaker 9: Yeah so for him to deliver something that's still this
- 1:00:01Speaker 9: tight and this everything about it is still pretty impressive
- 1:00:05Speaker 9: as far as i'm concerned that that's that's especially since
- 1:00:09Speaker 9: you see and this is probably a good example of
- 1:00:12Speaker 9: what happens when you get more money? I mean, he
- 1:00:15Speaker 9: followed this up with the brothers bloom, which I don't
- 1:00:19Speaker 9: think is near as good. And now he's working with
- 1:00:21Speaker 9: Oscar nominated actors and like, you know, I'm sure they're
- 1:00:24Speaker 9: throwing tons of money at him compared to this movie.
- 1:00:28Speaker 9: I mean, maybe not versus huge blockbusters, but compared to
- 1:00:32Speaker 9: this movie, I mean, he's got a hell of a
- 1:00:34Speaker 9: lot more money to work with, but to me it
- 1:00:36Speaker 9: doesn't hold up the same. There are good performances and
- 1:00:39Speaker 9: there's fun stuff in there, But there's something missing about it.
- 1:00:43Speaker 9: El Mariachi.
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:00:45Speaker 9: Yeah, kind of that same thing.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: Very similar thing.
- 1:00:49Speaker 9: Something different there.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: The early one was so creative and had that comic
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: book sensibility.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: It was so good, and then they remade it. I
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: was like, what is this?
- 1:01:01Speaker 9: It's too polished for its own good sometimes. This just
- 1:01:06Speaker 9: kind of falls right in that spot where it's kind
- 1:01:09Speaker 9: of got everything... working the way it needs to and
- 1:01:12Speaker 9: isn't cluttered by you know what comes with doing huge
- 1:01:17Speaker 9: movies i guess but yeah this i don't know there's
- 1:01:20Speaker 9: just just the way that he shoots it i think
- 1:01:23Speaker 9: the uh you do notice like watching it how many
- 1:01:27Speaker 9: of these upshots he does and how much he bothers
- 1:01:30Speaker 9: to put ceilings and you know he sort of boxes
- 1:01:34Speaker 9: the characters in in ways that a lot of movies
- 1:01:36Speaker 9: don't do it's It's something you don't see in a
- 1:01:39Speaker 9: lot of movies, especially like mainstream movies. You don't see
- 1:01:42Speaker 9: the ceiling in a room. And the fact that he
- 1:01:44Speaker 9: bothers to do that, it's very Citizen Kane-like. But even that,
- 1:01:49Speaker 9: it's sort of imposing. And it does kind of show
- 1:01:56Speaker 9: what the character is in. He's sort of boxed into
- 1:01:59Speaker 9: this situation. And it sort of adds attention to it
- 1:02:03Speaker 9: that I don't think you would have in a normal
- 1:02:05Speaker 9: straight shot. So again, I think it's just creative in
- 1:02:09Speaker 9: that point, but I think that is a little bit
- 1:02:11Speaker 9: of planning too, that he really did think about what
- 1:02:14Speaker 9: the shots are saying about the movie itself, the character.
- 1:02:18Speaker 9: I think, yeah, I think it's just, just well put
- 1:02:20Speaker 9: together visually. And again, has a little, to me, another
- 1:02:24Speaker 9: little winch touch to it. That whole plastic bag thing
- 1:02:28Speaker 9: is very linty.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:31Speaker 9: It's very, especially, I mean, dead girl by the water side.
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: Sure.
- 1:02:35Speaker 9: That's Twin Peaks wrapped in plastic. That's Twin Peaks. So
- 1:02:38Speaker 9: it's like he definitely, again, it's not that weird way.
- 1:02:43Speaker 9: But some of those weird dream sequences have a little
- 1:02:46Speaker 9: touch to that. Yeah, you can definitely see a little
- 1:02:49Speaker 9: lynch in him.
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: Lynch pen.
- 1:02:51Speaker 4: No.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: Lynch and pen.
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: Good job.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: Good job. Brian's saying no, but I'm saying good job.
- 1:03:01Speaker 9: I did like, again, we referenced the Peanuts thing. The
- 1:03:05Speaker 9: other thing I thought that was almost very cartoon-like in
- 1:03:07Speaker 9: this is they all have the same outfits on.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:03:11Speaker 9: At least the guys. The girls, I guess, change because
- 1:03:13Speaker 9: they're girls. But, like, our main character is in that
- 1:03:16Speaker 9: same outfit for days on end or has a whole
- 1:03:20Speaker 9: closet full of them, you know, Einstein-like.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: It's got the Scooby-Doo quality.
- 1:03:23Speaker 9: Yeah, it does have.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: Or the Jimmy Herman, you know.
- 1:03:25Speaker 9: But, like, the pin is always in that outfit. Tug
- 1:03:29Speaker 9: is always in that outfit. It's like every, you know, character,
- 1:03:33Speaker 9: even the jock guy is always in his little football outfit.
- 1:03:36Speaker 9: It's like, you know, everything is like, it is. It's
- 1:03:39Speaker 9: almost like a little cartoon character. world that they live
- 1:03:42Speaker 9: in and it's like everything goes on.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: Shaggy's green shirt. Even at the point Fred's ascot.
- 1:03:49Speaker 9: He's still wearing that coat. Even at the point the
- 1:03:52Speaker 9: guy slices it open he's got a piece of duct
- 1:03:54Speaker 9: tape on it. He continues on with the story. I
- 1:03:58Speaker 9: am not getting rid of this outfit.
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: That's great.
- 1:04:01Speaker 21: I don't know.
- 1:04:04Speaker 9: I just think there's so many things that are well
- 1:04:08Speaker 9: done in it and I think.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: It's a highly recommended must-watch. I've recommended it to many
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: people since I first saw it.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: It's the kind of movie you can watch twice within
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: the first year you see it.
- 1:04:27Speaker 9: It's just you've got to get over that hurdle of
- 1:04:29Speaker 9: the speech. I think that would turn off a good
- 1:04:32Speaker 9: amount of people. But if you're okay with that, it's
- 1:04:35Speaker 9: just so... tightly put together, and the performances are so good,
- 1:04:39Speaker 9: even as weird as they are sometimes, Tug's a weird character.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: It's easy to miss little things in the speech. If
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: you go back, I watched Maltese Falcon with my kid,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: and you have to kind of get keyed up to follow,
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: because they'll just spit it out, and you.
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: Have to keep up. They don't care whether you get
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: it or not.
- 1:05:05Speaker 9: Yeah you're in their world you know they are in
- 1:05:08Speaker 9: their own little world and everybody within that understands it
- 1:05:11Speaker 9: so you just you're kind of playing catch up as
- 1:05:13Speaker 9: you get thrown into it and you're like wait oh
- 1:05:15Speaker 9: okay I see what they're doing hold.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: On so yeah the fat man in that was a
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: pretty weird dude too he was always asking what kind
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: of a man are you are you this kind of
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: a man I don't like that kind of man I
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: like a kind of.
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: A man what.
- 1:05:30Speaker 9: Bizarre But yeah, they definitely draw... Actually, one of the
- 1:05:35Speaker 9: lines is straight out of Maltese Falcon. I think, what
- 1:05:38Speaker 9: was it? The dangerous line? Yeah, when he's talking to Laura,
- 1:05:42Speaker 9: he's like, now your dangerous line is straight out of
- 1:05:45Speaker 9: Maltese Falcon.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:05:47Speaker 9: And even the little horn signal that he tells her
- 1:05:51Speaker 9: in the car, the long, short, long, short, is the
- 1:05:54Speaker 9: same doorbell signal that he tells her in Maltese Falcon.
- 1:05:58Speaker 9: So it's very obviously... pulling from that it's not pretending
- 1:06:02Speaker 9: like it doesn't know what it's doing it's directly sort
- 1:06:05Speaker 9: of referencing that to again I think bring you in
- 1:06:08Speaker 9: on the joke if it's a joke if it's a
- 1:06:12Speaker 9: joke I don't even know that it.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: Is it's just it's its own little world and I
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: think it's just that and as long as you're okay
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: with that yeah I think it's really well put together
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: I think there are enough just clearly funny things in
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: it that it lets you know that It's not unconsciously
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: open to humor.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: It's just not playing toward it. I think, I don't know.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: I'm still hung up. I love the movie. I don't
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: want to get negative about it. But I still have
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: this unsettled, this is so unrealistic. It's so stylized. But
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: real bad guys would come in and kill these kids
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: right away. You know, you're not going to mess around
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: with heroin.
- 1:07:02Speaker 9: Which bad guys are we talking about? The pen?
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: No, I mean.
- 1:07:06Speaker 9: He's far from an organized bad guy.
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: I mean real criminals that you don't see in this movie.
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: Real drug dealers. Real gangsters.
- 1:07:15Speaker 9: Oh, somebody up the line from the pen?
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:07:17Speaker 14: Okay.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: Are going to come in and say, you little kids, wah, wah, wah.
- 1:07:22Speaker 9: I think we just didn't get to that point. And
- 1:07:24Speaker 9: it didn't matter because... They took care of the problem themselves.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: And maybe they're all so small-time anyway.
- 1:07:29Speaker 9: I think that's why they were so worried is, again,
- 1:07:32Speaker 9: somewhere up the line, somebody's going to have to pay,
- 1:07:36Speaker 9: probably with their life, whether it be the pin or
- 1:07:39Speaker 9: tug or whoever. I think somebody's going to be responsible
- 1:07:42Speaker 9: for that, and that's probably why they're at each other's
- 1:07:45Speaker 9: throats by the end there. I think we just didn't
- 1:07:47Speaker 9: get to that point.
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: I guess that's it.
- 1:07:50Speaker 9: I just.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: We get to that point in Blue Velvet where her
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: dad arrives on the scene at the last minute and
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: he looks around. Okay. And I always thought that was
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: such an interesting moment.
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: Because you're not.
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: Sure about him, what exactly is going on and who
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: he's connected with.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: And he comes in and he looks around.
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: Alright then, everybody who I need to worry about is dead,
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: so no need to get into this.
- 1:08:31Speaker 9: Done with this one, alright.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: I'm going to play this straight like I'm a cop,
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: because that's what's left.
- 1:08:42Speaker 9: Well, I think on this movie, I saw someone's response
- 1:08:47Speaker 9: to it later that was like, this is a smart movie,
- 1:08:50Speaker 9: maybe too smart for its own good.
- 1:08:52Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 1:08:52Speaker 9: Which, I don't know if that's what you're thinking. I don't, again,
- 1:08:57Speaker 9: to me, that almost goes back to, again, Funny Games.
- 1:09:01Speaker 9: Funny Games had that, we're going to wink at the camera,
- 1:09:04Speaker 9: and we know, I mean, there's so much on that
- 1:09:07Speaker 9: one where they're shoving it in your face. how smart
- 1:09:09Speaker 9: they are and how much they're playing with you. I
- 1:09:12Speaker 9: don't think this movie ever does that. I think it's smart,
- 1:09:14Speaker 9: but at the same time, it knows... It still works
- 1:09:17Speaker 9: as a movie. It knows how to... I mean, it
- 1:09:19Speaker 9: plays it so straight. It never really winks at the camera, ever.
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: It plays.
- 1:09:24Speaker 9: It knows it's its own little world, and it kind
- 1:09:26Speaker 9: of gives you that option of, if you're on board
- 1:09:28Speaker 9: with it, if you want to get over that and
- 1:09:31Speaker 9: come into the story, it sort of immerses you into
- 1:09:34Speaker 9: their little world that they exist in.
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:09:37Speaker 9: And from that point on... I think, you know, you
- 1:09:39Speaker 9: just sort of go along with the ride. And if
- 1:09:41Speaker 9: you're cool with it, it's a pretty good ride. Yeah.
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: No, no, it's, no, it's, it's, yeah, it's great in that. No,
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: if you're going to funny games is preachy.
- 1:09:49Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: It is.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: It's like, he's telling you something. And the thing that
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: finally doesn't work for me, I keep.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: I'm sorry to interrupt.
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: Go ahead.
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: You're not interrupting.
- 1:09:58Speaker 16: Go.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: I want to hear it.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: Well, just when you get to the end and they
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: throw her out of the boat and they're like, Oh, well,
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: there was still an hour to go.
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: And, Yeah, actually, I was kind of getting hungry. Who
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: does that sound like?
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: That sounds like me sitting on the sofa watching a movie.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: That doesn't work, though. It doesn't work because the nervous
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: system of the movie, it doesn't carry back to the
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: beginning of the movie.
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: It's manipulative.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: I can see how it's a commentary on a movie.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: But it doesn't work for me as a movie because
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: it doesn't earn where it goes.
- 1:10:34Speaker 9: It's very manipulative. I will give it credit for doing
- 1:10:37Speaker 9: some things good, but it's massively manipulative.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: I enjoy watching it. It just doesn't add up for me.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: There were some scenes where my mouth was open. I
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: was like, you did a pretty good job.
- 1:10:50Speaker 9: There's some great stuff.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: But it's the director going... I'm doing a pretty good
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: job of this. Look at this shot. And you still
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: don't understand. That's the part that I don't like.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: Yeah, the thing that I don't like, or the way
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: I would put the thing that I don't like, is
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: it's like in Pulp Fiction.
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: It's like Tarantino. It's like, don't Jimmy me. There's nothing
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: you're going to tell me.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: There's no commentary he's going to make about movies that
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: is so insightful or brilliant that it's going to make
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: me forget that.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: I love my wife. There's nothing he's... I'm the one
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: that buys the fucking coffee.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: I buy the coffee and I buy the good shit
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: because I want to taste it.
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: That's what it's like for me.
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: I resist it and I kind of reject it because
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: it doesn't convince me. And then in the end, it's
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: like he's characterizing the audience.
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: And it's like, no, dude, you don't get to do that.
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: You haven't earned that.
- 1:11:55Speaker 9: I don't think this ever does that. It's like this one,
- 1:11:57Speaker 9: the only thing that would fall into that category is,
- 1:12:00Speaker 9: aside from the dialogue, it gets cute in the way
- 1:12:03Speaker 9: that it is. But again, it's just knowingly accepting what
- 1:12:07Speaker 9: it is. But aside from that, the plot never gets cute,
- 1:12:10Speaker 9: never tries to do anything other than tell a story.
- 1:12:14Speaker 9: And I think that's what works so well.
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: It sticks to its business.
- 1:12:18Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:12:18Speaker 9: It doesn't try to rope you into anything else. It's
- 1:12:21Speaker 9: just like, this is the story we're telling and this
- 1:12:24Speaker 9: is the way we're going to go about telling it.
- 1:12:26Speaker 9: But from there on out, it's, it's just a straightforward
- 1:12:28Speaker 9: story and one that works pretty good.
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: No, I, I, I love the way he dealt with
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: time in the film. I love the way, no, everything
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: about it is, um, is, is, as perfect as you're
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: going to get in a movie. I'm not saying it's
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: a perfect movie, but it's as perfect as you're going
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: to get.
- 1:12:48Speaker 9: It's pretty impressive for... I mean, just for a movie
- 1:12:51Speaker 9: in general, and especially for somebody on their first feature,
- 1:12:54Speaker 9: it's still kind of amazing that it comes together this well.
- 1:12:58Speaker 9: And even something as simple as the music plays in
- 1:13:02Speaker 9: really well, which his cousin did.
- 1:13:04Speaker 19: Again.
- 1:13:05Speaker 9: being broke it's like his cousin writes music and it's
- 1:13:08Speaker 9: like he was you know here do this and it's
- 1:13:11Speaker 9: like this weird like sometimes it's just piano and sometimes
- 1:13:14Speaker 9: it's this really tense little plinking of keys and then
- 1:13:18Speaker 9: other times it's like the fight kicks in at the
- 1:13:21Speaker 9: end and there's like blaring trumpets going on like it's
- 1:13:23Speaker 9: very kind of eclectic with all the different stuff that
- 1:13:27Speaker 9: they throw in and yet it gives it its own
- 1:13:29Speaker 9: sort of signature sound and works really well with the
- 1:13:33Speaker 9: tension in the where it needs it and I don't
- 1:13:36Speaker 9: know I think even just as well pieced together as
- 1:13:39Speaker 9: all that stuff is it's pretty impressive anything else for
- 1:13:43Speaker 9: the break.
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: Good movie yeah see it if you got.
- 1:13:47Speaker 8: Yeah hopefully you've already seen it I know alright I
- 1:13:53Speaker 8: guess that rounds out this week's sofa theater feature we
- 1:13:58Speaker 8: do have feedback.
- 1:14:00Speaker 9: Yay and this one feedback Actually, it came in a
- 1:14:07Speaker 9: while ago, but it's one of those I've kind of
- 1:14:09Speaker 9: just been waiting to get to and waiting for the
- 1:14:13Speaker 9: party involved to actually be on hand. So the title
- 1:14:16Speaker 9: of this one, this time we hear from Brad, and
- 1:14:19Speaker 9: the title is Carpenter Wasn't My Babysitter, Sadly. He says, Hello, Meltdowners.
- 1:14:25Speaker 9: In my ongoing quest to find new quality podcasts, I
- 1:14:28Speaker 9: stumbled across Movie Meltdown's Carpenter Was My Babysitter episode. After
- 1:14:32Speaker 9: I got back up, I listened to it and really
- 1:14:33Speaker 9: enjoyed it. I live in Bowling Green, and my uncle
- 1:14:36Speaker 9: met Carpenter and Adrian Barbeau at Western in the 80s.
- 1:14:39Speaker 9: Halloween is my favorite film of all time, so it's
- 1:14:41Speaker 9: nice to hear someone from Bowling Green representing. Not only
- 1:14:45Speaker 9: do we not have a statue of him in town,
- 1:14:47Speaker 9: we don't even have a sign or a plaque. Maybe
- 1:14:49Speaker 9: I'll work on that. Anyways, thanks, and I'll be listening
- 1:14:52Speaker 9: to more.
- 1:14:53Speaker 8: Brad.
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: Check out the brain on Brad.
- 1:14:57Speaker 9: You've got somebody representing from the.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: I think I know why he was there in the 80s.
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: He did go and talk there.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: My mom saw him. And I guess Adrian and the
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: twins came along.
- 1:15:12Speaker 9: It was probably when they did The Fog.
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: You're probably right.
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: Awesome.
- 1:15:18Speaker 9: So yeah, I thought that was cool and just wanted
- 1:15:20Speaker 9: to be sure and pass it along while you were here, Fred.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: Yeah, cool.
- 1:15:24Speaker 9: Thank you once again to Brad.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: Yeah, there is at Western, there's a log house down
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: at the foot of the hill next to a little
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: building that used to be a burger place. And John
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: Carpenter's parents actually lived in the cabin. It was faculty
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: housing back then. Now it's part of the Kentucky Museum stuff.
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: But that's the way I've heard the story. Because John
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: Carpenter's parents live there.
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:15:57Speaker 9: And they should put a plaque on it and a
- 1:15:59Speaker 9: statue out front.
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: That's right.
- 1:16:03Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:16:04Speaker 9: Anything else to round out this week?
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: Well, somebody mentioned to me that they guess Jess doesn't
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: have a plaque up at Atherton.
- 1:16:17Speaker 9: I think we should do something about that.
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I think we should.
- 1:16:20Speaker 19: Why not?
- 1:16:22Speaker 9: We'll see if we can get that petition going to
- 1:16:24Speaker 9: get our new inductee into the little gang here. I
- 1:16:28Speaker 9: don't know if she's willing, but we're taking her anyway.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: Hey, she's been on three episodes.
- 1:16:36Speaker 9: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: That she's in.
- 1:16:38Speaker 9: Whether she likes it or not, she's part of the family.
- 1:16:41Speaker 21: That's right.
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:16:44Speaker 9: Otherwise, I guess we can get the hell out of here.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: Yeah, bye everybody.
- 1:16:49Speaker 9: That about does it. We will return next week. Same
- 1:16:51Speaker 9: geek time, same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:16:54Speaker 7: Six a.m.
- 1:16:56Speaker 20: Day after Christmas I throw some clothes on in the dark.
- 1:17:04Speaker 7: The smell of coal.

- 1:17:40Speaker 17: home to find this out now that.
- 1:17:51Speaker 7: I've found someone i'm feeling more alone.
- 1:17:57Speaker 20: Than i ever have before.
- 1:18:03Speaker 11: She's a brick and i'm drowning slowly off the coast.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: And i'm.
- 1:18:17Speaker 20: They call her.
- 1:18:20Speaker 7: Name at 7.30 I pace around the parking lot.
- 1:18:42Speaker 11: And I walk down to buy.
- 1:18:47Speaker 17: Her flowers and sell some gifts that I got Can't
- 1:18:55Speaker 17: you see? It's not me you're dying.
- 1:19:02Speaker 7: For And she's feeling more alone.
- 1:19:07Speaker 17: Than she ever has before She's.
- 1:19:14Speaker 11: A brick and I'm drowning slowly Off the coast and
- 1:19:20Speaker 11: I'm headed nowhere She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
- 1:19:42Speaker 11: As weeks went.
- 1:19:43Speaker 12: By, they showed the shield.
- 1:19:46Speaker 11: Was not fine They told me, son, it's time to
- 1:19:53Speaker 11: talk of line driving back to.

- 1:20:39Speaker 11: She's a-breakin' up, drownin' slowly Off the coast and I'm
