- 0:00Speaker 1: Anything to earn the love but because you exist and
- 0:04Speaker 1: existence is good and the goodness of existence is the
- 0:08Speaker 1: oldest feeling in the world and the oldest feeling in
- 0:12Speaker 1: the world is the first story and the first story
- 0:16Speaker 1: is the only story and the only story is this
- 0:20Speaker 1: it is good to be you hear the whisper you
- 0:25Speaker 1: feel it it enters you the way warped enters you
- 0:30Speaker 1: the way light enters you, the way sleep enters you,
- 0:34Speaker 1: not through the senses, not through the mind, not through
- 0:38Speaker 1: any of the usual channels of perception, but through the
- 0:42Speaker 1: deeper channels, the ones that exist beneath the surface of
- 0:47Speaker 1: the body, beneath the surface of the mind, in the
- 0:50Speaker 1: territory of the soul, if souls exist, which I believe
- 0:55Speaker 1: they do, though I have never seen one, except in
- 0:59Speaker 1: the library. where they are kept on the highest shelves,
- 1:02Speaker 1: in the smallest books, in the deepest sleeps. The whisper
- 1:12Speaker 1: settles into you. It becomes part of you. It joins
- 1:16Speaker 1: the other things that are part of you, the breathing,
- 1:20Speaker 1: the heartbeat, the warmth, the darkness, the silence, the sleep.
- 1:26Speaker 1: It becomes one more layer in the quilt of rest
- 1:29Speaker 1: that is being assembled around you. One more blanket in
- 1:34Speaker 1: the stack of warmth that is being piled on top
- 1:37Speaker 1: of you. One more voice in the chorus of comfort
- 1:40Speaker 1: that is singing you to sleep has been singing you
- 1:43Speaker 1: to sleep, will continue to sing you to sleep for
- 1:46Speaker 1: as long as you need it, which is always, which
- 1:49Speaker 1: is forever, which is the amount of time that the
- 1:53Speaker 1: library has. which is the amount of time that the
- 1:56Speaker 1: books have, which is the amount of time that the
- 1:59Speaker 1: whisper has, which is all the time there is. Fleek now.
- 2:06Speaker 1: The whisper will keep singing. The library will keep holding.
- 2:10Speaker 1: The books will keep dreaming. And you will sleep, and
- 2:14Speaker 1: the sleeping will be good. And the goodness of the
- 2:17Speaker 1: sleeping will seep into you the way the warmth of
- 2:20Speaker 1: the cup seeped into your hands. the way the moonlight
- 2:24Speaker 1: seeped through the arrow slits, the way the candlelight seeped
- 2:28Speaker 1: into the shadows, and when you wake, you will carry
- 2:32Speaker 1: the whisper with you, the way you carry the story,
- 2:36Speaker 1: the way you carry the feeling, the way you carry
- 2:39Speaker 1: the warmth, gently, carefully, close to your heart, in the
- 2:44Speaker 1: deepest part of you where it has always been, where
- 2:48Speaker 1: it will always be, where it is now. Even as
- 2:52Speaker 1: you sleep, even as you dream, even as the night
- 2:56Speaker 1: goes on and on and on deep and warm and endless.
- 3:00Speaker 1: The way a story goes on, the way a dream
- 3:03Speaker 1: goes on, the way love goes on. Without the slightest
- 3:09Speaker 1: trace of stopping. The library is here. The whisper is here.
- 3:22Speaker 1: We are all here, together, in the quiet, in the warm,
- 3:29Speaker 1: in the dark, holding you, watching you, singing to you,
- 3:35Speaker 1: keeping you safe through the long, deep, beautiful night. There
- 3:44Speaker 1: is one more shelf in the library, one more section.
- 3:48Speaker 1: one more room that we have not yet visited and
- 3:51Speaker 1: that I have been saving, because it is the most
- 3:54Speaker 1: important section in the entire library, and the most personal,
- 3:59Speaker 1: and the most tender. And because it is the section
- 4:02Speaker 1: that the librarian considers her greatest treasure, greater than the
- 4:07Speaker 1: weather books, greater than the forgotten feelings, greater than the
- 4:11Speaker 1: sleeping books, greater even than the book without a name.
- 4:17Speaker 1: The Section of Personal Libraries Every person who has ever
- 4:23Speaker 1: fallen asleep in this library, every student, every professor, every ghost,
- 4:29Speaker 1: every house elf, every visitor, every stranger who wandered in
- 4:34Speaker 1: from the corridor and sat down in the chair and
- 4:37Speaker 1: picked up the cup and opened a book and fell
- 4:39Speaker 1: asleep has a book on the shelf, just one. It
- 4:42Speaker 1: is the book that the library has written about them
- 4:45Speaker 1: in the silent, patient, observant way that libraries write about
- 4:50Speaker 1: the people who use them. The library pays attention. That
- 4:59Speaker 1: is what libraries do. They watch. They notice. They record
- 5:05Speaker 1: not in the way that cameras record or the way
- 5:08Speaker 1: that diaries record or the way that memories record, but
- 5:13Speaker 1: in the way that a stone records the warmth of
- 5:15Speaker 1: the sun. Passively, permanently, without effort, without intention, without the
- 5:22Speaker 1: slightest trace of self-consciousness, the library notices the way you
- 5:27Speaker 1: hold a book. Whether you cradle it or grip it,
- 5:32Speaker 1: whether you turn the pages quickly or slowly, whether you
- 5:36Speaker 1: dog-ear them or keep them pristine, it notices the way
- 5:40Speaker 1: you sit, whether you sit upright or slouch. whether you
- 5:44Speaker 1: lean forward or lean back, whether you tuck your feet
- 5:48Speaker 1: under you or stretch them out. It notices the way
- 5:52Speaker 1: you breathe, whether you breathe quickly or slowly, whether your
- 5:57Speaker 1: breathing changes when you read something that moves you, whether
- 6:01Speaker 1: you hold your breath at the exciting parts and let
- 6:04Speaker 1: it out at the quiet parts. And it writes all
- 6:09Speaker 1: of this down. In a book. Your book. The book
- 6:14Speaker 1: that is about you, that is made of you. That
- 6:17Speaker 1: is the story of your relationship with this library. Which
- 6:21Speaker 1: is another way of saying the story of your relationship
- 6:24Speaker 1: with stories. Which is another way of saying the story
- 6:28Speaker 1: of your relationship with yourself. Because the stories you choose
- 6:32Speaker 1: to read tell you more about yourself than any mirror
- 6:36Speaker 1: or therapist or fortune teller ever could. Your book is
- 6:42Speaker 1: on this shelf. I have seen it. I have not
- 6:45Speaker 1: read it. The books in this section are private and
- 6:49Speaker 1: the librarian would not allow anyone to read another person's book.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Not even me. Not even her. But I have seen it.
- 6:59Speaker 1: It is small. It is the size of a paperback novel.
- 7:03Speaker 1: It is bound in a color that is unique to you.
- 7:06Speaker 1: No one else's book is this color because no one
- 7:10Speaker 1: else is this color because no one else is you.
- 7:14Speaker 1: And you are a color that has never existed before
- 7:17Speaker 1: and will never exist again. And the library knows this,
- 7:21Speaker 1: and the library celebrates it. By giving your book a
- 7:25Speaker 1: color that is entirely, perfectly, unmistakably yours. Your book is warm,
- 7:33Speaker 1: not the warmth of the other books. Not the warmth
- 7:36Speaker 1: of the weather books. Which is the warmth of the elements.
- 7:40Speaker 1: or the warmth of the sleeping books, which is the
- 7:43Speaker 1: warmth of dreams. Your book is warm with the warmth
- 7:47Speaker 1: of you, the warmth of your hands on the pages,
- 7:52Speaker 1: the warmth of your body in the chair, the warmth
- 7:55Speaker 1: of your breath on the paper, the warmth of your life,
- 7:58Speaker 1: which is the warmest thing in the library, warmer than
- 8:02Speaker 1: the candles, warmer than the moonlight, warmer than the stone,
- 8:07Speaker 1: warmer than the silence, because life is the warmest thing
- 8:10Speaker 1: in the world, because life is the thing that generates
- 8:14Speaker 1: the warmth, that produces the light, that makes the stories possible,
- 8:19Speaker 1: that gives the books their reason for being. Your book
- 8:24Speaker 1: has been on this shelf for as long as you
- 8:27Speaker 1: have been coming to the library, which may be tonight
- 8:29Speaker 1: this may be your first visit, and your book may
- 8:33Speaker 1: be thin, just a few pages, Just a beginning, or
- 8:36Speaker 1: it may have been years. Your book may be thick,
- 8:40Speaker 1: hundreds of pages, thousands, full of the rich, complex, detailed
- 8:45Speaker 1: story of a person who has been reading and sleeping
- 8:49Speaker 1: and dreaming and living in this library for a very
- 8:52Speaker 1: long time. The book does not contain words. Not in
- 9:02Speaker 1: the usual sense. It contains feelings. Every feeling you have
- 9:07Speaker 1: ever had in this library, every moment of comfort, every
- 9:12Speaker 1: moment of rest, every moment of peace, every moment of
- 9:17Speaker 1: the deep, slow, warm recognition that you are held. That
- 9:22Speaker 1: you are known, that you are part of something vast
- 9:25Speaker 1: and ancient and kind is recorded in this book, not
- 9:29Speaker 1: as a description, but as the feeling itself, preserved in
- 9:32Speaker 1: the pages the way the weather books preserve the feelings
- 9:36Speaker 1: of weather, the way the forgotten feelings books preserve the
- 9:40Speaker 1: feelings that the world has forgotten, the way the sleeping
- 9:44Speaker 1: books preserve the dreams of the books that dream. The
- 9:49Speaker 1: book is yours. It will always be yours. It will
- 9:53Speaker 1: be here, on this shelf, in this section, in this library,
- 9:59Speaker 1: for as long as
