- 0:00Unknown: It's the Karen Kenney show. Hey you guys, welcome to
- 0:04the Karen Kenney show. I'm so happy to be here with you for a
- 0:07bunch of different reasons, but the first one being is, I'm just
- 0:13sitting here. I can't believe it's March. March 7 is just a
- 0:17couple of days away, and March 7 will be the seven year
- 0:21anniversary of the Karen Kenney Show podcast, which is just
- 0:25crazy to me. This is episode 356
- 0:29so that's a lot, that's a lot of years, that's a lot of shows,
- 0:32that's a lot of me talking, running my big mouth, that's a
- 0:37lot of you guys tuning in. So just thank you so much to all of
- 0:41my loyal listeners. And if you're new here, welcome. I'm so
- 0:45happy to have you. I just can't believe so much time has passed.
- 0:49And you know I mean, God willing, I'll be able to keep
- 0:52doing another seven you know what I mean. Okay, so just
- 0:56wanted to say that thank you so much for being here. And this
- 1:00episode, I'm going to try to keep my thoughts straight, man,
- 1:03but I have so many things on my hat and on my mind these days,
- 1:07and I wrote down a few notes for myself, and I'm just going to do
- 1:11my best. But one of the things I want to, I think I want to kind
- 1:13of dive into this episode, saying this so much of the work
- 1:18that I do with people, and I work with people in a lot of
- 1:21different ways. You guys know that, right? I've been a yoga
- 1:23teacher forever. I do Thai Yoga, massage, Thai Yoga, body work,
- 1:27spiritual mentor, coach, hypnotism, right? I do gateless
- 1:31writing. I'm a writer. Really. What I am more than anything is
- 1:34a writer and a storyteller.
- 1:36You know, guest teacher, fucking retreat leader, whatever. I do a
- 1:39lot of shit, but so much of the work that I do is an extension
- 1:43of the work that I do and have done with myself, right towards
- 1:47myself, all of the tools, all the skill sets, all the
- 1:51different things that I have gathered were for me first,
- 1:53because I had to go first, because I had some stuff I was
- 1:56navigating right. I'm like, Hello, have you met me right? My
- 2:00childhood, my life, whatever. And so one of the things that I
- 2:05became aware of back in the day when I started really, do we
- 2:11want to call it a journey? I don't know. Man, I was just
- 2:14living my life and trying to be the best person I could be and
- 2:18learn about myself. And so that's my point. So much of my
- 2:21work is built around this. This like self awareness, having more
- 2:26self awareness, having more self knowledge, really understanding
- 2:30yourself better, starting to know why you think, what you
- 2:34think, and say what you say, and believe what you believe, and
- 2:36hold the prejudices you hold, and and understand the systems
- 2:40that you're existing in, whether that's your family or your
- 2:43culture or just the greater, the systems of racism, the systems
- 2:48of patriarchy, the systems of whatever right just
- 2:51understanding who you are, where you are in the world, and how
- 2:54you got to be and behave and believe the way that you do. And
- 3:00so when I'm working with others, this is gonna just stay with me,
- 3:04because this is gonna tie into today's episode. I'm just trying
- 3:07to make a point so much of this, and I used to say, and I still
- 3:10say to all of my clients, right? So much of this is about owning
- 3:15both your brilliance like knowing who you really are,
- 3:18knowing your skill sets, knowing your talents, knowing how loved
- 3:22you are, how how much you matter. Notice, notice the
- 3:25positive impact you have the on the world, right? Owning your
- 3:29brilliance. But then you also have to own your bullshit. You
- 3:32have to own the places where you get triggered. You have to own
- 3:35the places where you tend to drop the ball. You have to own
- 3:38the places where you act like a dick, right? You know what I
- 3:41mean, where you lose your where you're like impatient, or you're
- 3:44unkind or whatever, or you don't keep your word to yourself and
- 3:48others. Whatever we have to, we don't have to. But I would
- 3:53encourage you to understand yourself, to know yourself, and
- 3:56the more that you can do, that you can make better choices that
- 3:59actually represent who you are and who you really want to be.
- 4:04Which brings us to today. You know, I might call this episode
- 4:07the consequences of being yourself, and I want to talk
- 4:10about that word consequences, but I'm also going to tell you
- 4:13where the heartbeat of this came from. So many of you may know
- 4:16that I am a Kripalu Yoga teacher. I have been a Kripalu
- 4:19Yoga teacher. I started teaching yoga in 1999 before I was ever
- 4:23certified. But I became certified in 2001
- 4:26and I lived at the Kripalu center for yoga and health out
- 4:28in the Berkshires in Massachusetts, Western
- 4:30Massachusetts. I lived there for a month, did my ytt, my yoga
- 4:34teacher training there, etc, etc. And every day I would walk
- 4:37by this picture of Swami Kripalu, who we called Bapuji.
- 4:41And the word Kripalu simply means compassion. And I would
- 4:44see this, this picture of this beautiful like, you know, the
- 4:47grandfaire. I call him one of my spiritual grandfathers, because
- 4:50I'm a part of his lineage, the Kripalu lineage, right? And so I
- 4:55would see his beautiful, smiling face throughout the building in
- 4:58different pictures, him and his.
- 5:00Saffron robes, you know. And there was this one quote that
- 5:04said, and people can argue about this, I don't really care
- 5:07whether it's true or real or not, whether it was in the
- 5:09Bhagavad Gita, whether, you know, one of the Kripalu
- 5:13teachers said it, or Swami Kripalu said it. I'm going to
- 5:15say there was a picture of his face. And then there was this
- 5:17quote that said, yoga is tolerating the consequences of
- 5:22being yourself. And you know how we often say, Oh, I saw this
- 5:28thing and it stopped me in my tracks. I mean, when I tell you
- 5:30this quote, literally stopped me dead in my tracks. I'll never
- 5:34forget the first time I saw it. I was coming down the stairs and
- 5:37it like was like, I'm coming down the landing, and boom, it's
- 5:40right there in front of my face. And I literally, kind of
- 5:42stopped, you know, stopped, you know, but like, when a dog, he
- 5:44has a funny sound, and he tilts his head. I kind of tilted my
- 5:46head, and I thought tolerating the consequences of being
- 5:49myself. What is that about? Right? Like, what are the
- 5:54consequences of being myself? And I started to think about
- 5:58this. Now,
- 6:01when I tell people, when I talk to people about this, right,
- 6:04there are consequences for you being the way that you are now,
- 6:09who you truly are underneath all your conditioning and your
- 6:14patterns and your behaviors and your history and your bullshit,
- 6:18underneath your personality and your ego and all that I believe
- 6:21there is the true you, the true blue, real deal, Holyfield, you,
- 6:25right? That, to me, is love. It is compassion, it's kindness,
- 6:29it's eternal. It never dies. When your body falls away, that
- 6:32energy that is you, that loving source of you, it continues,
- 6:36right? You don't have to believe the same thing as me. I just
- 6:39believe this. Okay, this is what I think. This is what I think I
- 6:43could be wrong, and maybe one day I'll find out, right. But
- 6:46for now, I think underneath it all that there is a divine spark
- 6:50that animates all of us, that this is who we are, okay, having
- 6:53said that, okay, I'm like, underneath, underneath that is
- 6:59this. But on top of that beautiful, divine spark of love
- 7:03and goodness and compassion and kindness and mercy and all those
- 7:06things, there is your personality. Your personality is
- 7:11often what I'm talking about, or what I believe this quote is
- 7:14talking about the consequence of being yourself. Now here's the
- 7:18thing about this word, consequence. Consequences. This
- 7:21word has a negative connotation. In our society, we often think
- 7:25of consequences as being something bad, right? Like, oh
- 7:29my god. But here's the thing, there can also be positive
- 7:33consequences. In fact, the word consequences is actually
- 7:36neutral. So as I often like to do, you guys know, I'm a little
- 7:40bit of a word nerd.
- 7:42So here's the definition. I'm going to read it to you. I'm
- 7:44just holding up the paper consequence noun. This is what
- 7:48it means a result or effect of an action or condition. Here's
- 7:56it. Here it is in a sentence, right? Many have been laid off
- 7:59from work as a consequence of the administration's policies.
- 8:03So it doesn't say that consequences are negative. There
- 8:06can also be positive consequences, and you can just
- 8:09switch out the word result or outcome, right? Sometimes there
- 8:13are positive outcomes, sometimes there are negative outcomes,
- 8:16sometimes there are negative results, and sometimes there are
- 8:19positive results. So the word consequence, and I thought this
- 8:22was important in this context, because the consequences of
- 8:26being yourself can have both positive impact on yourself and
- 8:32others, the world around you, the animals, whoever you're
- 8:35interacting with, it can also have negative consequences,
- 8:39right? So I wanted to get that clear as we move forward that
- 8:42consequences aren't just negative. They can be both, so
- 8:48a lot of times. And the reason why I'm talking about this is I
- 8:51don't think we spend enough time thinking about the consequences
- 8:56of us being ourselves in the way that we are in the world, the
- 8:59way that we talk, the way that we think, the way that we speak,
- 9:02the way that we believe, the way that we vote, the way we spend
- 9:05our money, how we do things. So many of us are on autopilot. So
- 9:09many people at thinking about things. They just are in their
- 9:13little world, on their, you know, when you when we were
- 9:16kids, we were because I was, you know, I always wanted, like,
- 9:20Tomboy, like, I guess you could just call them toys, but toys
- 9:23that, back in the day lean towards, like, being a quote,
- 9:25unquote tomboy or whatever, right? So I like GI Joe dolls. I
- 9:29didn't like dolls and stuff like, I wanted, like Tonka
- 9:32Trucks, and I wanted, like, race car tracks and like, I wanted
- 9:35all that stuff. Right back in the day you would have these
- 9:37little race contracts, and they would have like, little grooves
- 9:40in them. And so your cars would like zip around on the tracks,
- 9:43but they would stay, like, every once in a while we go, they
- 9:46would like go flying. And if you've ever had one, you know
- 9:48exactly what I'm talking about, it would go flying off the
- 9:51track. You know what I mean. And so Wait, how did I get on this?
- 9:56On talking about it? Oh, my God.
- 10:00I'm gonna have to pause because I gotta think about this for a
- 10:02second, Jesus.
- 10:11And I'm back, I just remember what the guy was talking about.
- 10:14Okay, so sometimes we just kind of get into this track, this
- 10:17groove, and we don't question anything. We don't look around.
- 10:20We're just like, oh, that's just how I am, that's just how they
- 10:23are. That's just how he is or she is. And we don't think about
- 10:26right? We don't question things. We just kind of do the same shit
- 10:28over and over and over again, but not realizing I think of it
- 10:32like when you're when there's a boat, and you're driving on a
- 10:35boat, and a boat always leaves a wake behind it in the water,
- 10:38right? Even if you're paddling, if you ever like, if you canoe,
- 10:41even if you don't have a moda, right? And you paddle that
- 10:44canoe, when you look back that little paddle being in the water
- 10:47and that stroke, it causes a little like swirl, a little Eddy
- 10:51in the water, right? It's like, whoo. So who and how we're
- 10:55being. It has consequences, both positively and negatively, and
- 11:00we have to be aware of this. And so I'm going to give you a few
- 11:05stories and a few examples of why this has kind of been on my
- 11:09mind. You know, I talk about, like, when I'm talking with
- 11:12people about creating a daily spiritual practice, right? I
- 11:15don't get too hung up on exactly what they're doing. I'm like,
- 11:18Hey, we created DSP. We create a daily spiritual practice.
- 11:22Because when you do a daily spiritual practice, when you
- 11:25start your day being more aware and being more conscious and
- 11:29having a conscious connection to something greater than you,
- 11:33however you might define that, your higher power, your highest
- 11:37self, Mother Nature, the universe, God source, the divine
- 11:40intelligence, the loving intelligence. I don't care what
- 11:43people call it. When you start your day in your awareness of
- 11:47relationship to that, you spend time in meditation or
- 11:52contemplation or prayer or just quiet time, right? You're doing
- 11:56things to like again, people's DSP can look 1000 different
- 12:00ways, but you're spending time in the morning doing, you know,
- 12:02morning pages you're writing out longhand. You're starting to
- 12:05kind of get your mind right. You're starting to get on board
- 12:08with the kind of day you would like to create and what you're
- 12:10going to get done and who you might come across right? That's
- 12:13why, you know, I say that that prayer every day. Have me go
- 12:16where you would have me go. Have me do what you would have me do.
- 12:18Have me say what you would have me say, and to whom please use
- 12:21me try to put yourself in service to something higher than
- 12:24you, to be used by a greater force, like a force of love, to
- 12:27be in service to love. Okay? Because doing that first thing
- 12:31in the morning, before you get on your phone, before you turn
- 12:35on the news, before you read the newspaper, before you start to
- 12:38become bombarded by the horrors and the tragedies that are going
- 12:41on out there, right? And yes, of course, there are some good,
- 12:44beautiful and holy things and people and stuff happening, but
- 12:47those don't sell papers. Those don't get clicks. So a lot of
- 12:50our news that we're being bombarded with is negative and
- 12:53scary because, oh, and your nervous system gets hijacked and
- 12:56you're just exhausted before you even go out the door. So having
- 13:00a daily spiritual practice at DSP, right? And when I talk to
- 13:03my clients about this, it helps to set you up for success. It
- 13:06helps to point you in the right direction, get you on the right
- 13:09track. You declare, this is the kind of day I'm going to have,
- 13:11and I'm going to get my rhyme right, and I'm going to, you
- 13:13know, do my best to do that again, not always successful,
- 13:16but you're way better off than having not done it right. When
- 13:19you start your day with a little gratitude and a little insight
- 13:22and a little like, you know, awareness beyond just you and
- 13:25your own world, right? Like, hello, we're all connected to
- 13:28each other. This is how we get through this thing together.
- 13:31Okay, you start your day like that. It's the difference I
- 13:34often say about going out into the world in an inspired way,
- 13:38versus going out and inflicting yourself on other people. I'm
- 13:42going to say that again, it's the difference between going out
- 13:44into the world in a more inspired way, right, versus
- 13:49going out and inflicting yourself on other people.
- 13:52Because if you're not aware of who you are and how you are, if
- 13:56you've got some sort of an attitude problem, if you're
- 13:58always angry or always complaining, are always
- 14:01miserable, or always just like, you know, whatever, if you're
- 14:06always greedy, if you're always in a place of expectation or
- 14:11privilege, or what's the word I'm looking for? You? What's the
- 14:17word I'm looking for? Entitled? Oh, my fucking god, people who
- 14:21move through the world in such an entitled way, you know what
- 14:24I'm saying? Oh, my God. You don't realize there are
- 14:27consequences to you being you and the way that you are each
- 14:32day, when you go out into the world, and even if you stay at
- 14:34home and work online, right you there are consequences to let's
- 14:39say you're somebody who
- 14:41doesn't I'm not judging people who don't clean. Everybody is
- 14:44different. Everybody has different levels of comfort and
- 14:47neatness around things like that. But, you know, there are
- 14:49consequences to not cleaning up. This is how you start to get
- 14:53bugs or cockroaches sometimes, or like, you know, if you never
- 14:56like cleaned up after your dog or your cat, you'll end up with
- 14:59shit and.
- 15:00Kiss everywhere in your house. You know what I'm saying. So
- 15:02there are consequences to the choices that we make and who we
- 15:05are and how we are. We're constantly teaching people. We
- 15:08are constantly demonstrating what we believe by what we do
- 15:12and don't do, by what we say and don't say by our actions, right?
- 15:16Okay, now I saw this really funny. Now I often do episodes,
- 15:21because something will keep coming to me in different forms,
- 15:26whether it's from the universe, universal signs. Kismet, you
- 15:30know, what do they call it? Coincidence, whatever people
- 15:32want to call it again. I don't get hung up on it, but I saw
- 15:35this really funny meme, and on it, just imagine there's a light
- 15:38switch on the wall and there's a finger going towards the wall,
- 15:42and the light switch right now is in the on position. It's up
- 15:46and on the up position. Other words, this contribute to
- 15:49society. And in the off position, it says menace to
- 15:53society. I thought this was so freaking funny, right? And it's
- 15:57like, yeah, we're gonna choose. Like, you know when people say,
- 16:00Oh, he woke up today and he chose violence, right? Well, so
- 16:03in each moment, right? Each day, we are deciding, how am I going
- 16:07to be again? Am I going to go out into the world, right and
- 16:10own my brilliance and move in an inspired way, or am I going to
- 16:13go out into the world in my bullshit, in my patterns, in my
- 16:16trauma, in my stuff, right, in my wounds? It's okay if you have
- 16:21wounds, but if you're not aware that you have a wound that you
- 16:24is bleeding out, it will have a consequence ultimately, right?
- 16:28But sometimes your blood is getting all over everybody else.
- 16:31Okay? So it's like, am I going to go out into the world in that
- 16:34more inspired way, or am I going to go out and be a menace to
- 16:36society? Am I going to inflict myself on people? And it's not
- 16:41always in these grandiose ways, right? You ever hear that phrase
- 16:45death by 1000 paper cuts? Right? If you're living with somebody
- 16:49who is in their own insecurity, so they're jealous, or they're
- 16:53whatever, so they'll just take these little pot shots at you,
- 16:56or they'll start to do weird shit, like looking through your
- 16:59phone or like, Now, look, I get sometimes that's necessity,
- 17:02because you understand that somebody's doing something
- 17:05dangerous or whatever. I'm not again, I'm not here to judge
- 17:08people's actions. I'm just saying there are times when we
- 17:12know that, like something is up and it's like, right? But
- 17:15people's insecurity also has consequences. I got a story
- 17:18about that for another time, right? But if you don't check
- 17:22yourself, you're not only going to wreck yourself, you're going
- 17:24to wreck other people that are around you. And this is why I
- 17:27often say to like parents, especially if I'm working with a
- 17:30parent, I'm like one of the greatest gifts you can give your
- 17:33kids is to get your shit together, is to know yourself,
- 17:36to know your history, to know your your your trauma that has
- 17:39been passed down from generation to generation, your happiness,
- 17:43your sense of self, your sense of safety, your sense of knowing
- 17:47who you are, your sense of feeling a connection to your
- 17:51history and your people and your ancestors in your past. Right to
- 17:54be grounded in even if your your origin, your family of origin,
- 17:58was a shit show. You can get out of that once you're an adult,
- 18:01most of the time. Not everybody can. I understand that, but most
- 18:05people can, and they can start to live differently and choose
- 18:08differently and behave differently, right? And so that
- 18:12meme was making me think about this, right? Am I going to be a
- 18:14contribution? Am I going to contribute to society, or am I
- 18:17going to be a fucking menace to society? And I got to tell you,
- 18:19there's a lot of people out in the world right now who are
- 18:21being a menace to society, and whether or not like I'm just
- 18:25thinking about right our current, this current
- 18:27administration, and thinking about Trump, I got to say this,
- 18:31whatever you feel about that. I know strongly how I feel. And
- 18:35this to me, just from not even a political point of view, just
- 18:39from a personal human like in the work that I do observing
- 18:43human behavior. This is a person who has been inflicting himself
- 18:48on others for a really long time. This is a person who does
- 18:53not seem self aware at all,
- 18:57or the story they tell themselves about who they think
- 19:00they are is not as cognitive dissonance there. But I'll tell
- 19:04you this, when a person like that makes a decision to go to
- 19:08war without not even going to the correct channel, just
- 19:12illegally starting a war for his own means, whatever, and then
- 19:16you bomb a girls school and you kill over 150 people, mostly
- 19:21children, mostly little girls. This is a person who is
- 19:25inflicting themselves on the world. This is a person who is
- 19:29there are consequences to that person being who and how they
- 19:34are. And I don't know about you, but I don't want to be that kind
- 19:38of person. I want to be able to own my shit. I want to I want to
- 19:41become more aware of my blind spots and know what pushes,
- 19:45quote, unquote, my buttons and what gets me scared or anxious
- 19:49or worked up or whatever, and not not showing up from a place
- 19:53of love. I want to understand the ways that I go into fear or
- 19:57lack or scarcity or whatever, what my pattern.
- 20:00Have been now, sometimes we need help, right, figuring that stuff
- 20:04out. That's why there are counselors and coaches and
- 20:07mentors and therapists and whatever. This is why we have
- 20:10support groups like Al Anon and AA and over eat is anonymous and
- 20:15this, that and the other thing, that's why there are communities
- 20:18like the nest, like I run, right? Sometimes we need help
- 20:21kind of navigating this whole being human experience, because
- 20:24it's fucking hard. It's hard, but we can only there's only so
- 20:28many excuses you can make. Right? Like I said to a client
- 20:31the other day, trauma explains a lot of things, right? Our
- 20:35trauma, our stories, what happened. It explains how we got
- 20:39here, why we might kind of be the way that we are, but it does
- 20:42not excuse once we understand and once we know what we do
- 20:45going forward, we can't just keep blaming it on our poor
- 20:49childhood and the thing that happened to us at some point.
- 20:53And I understand we're all existing also within systems.
- 20:57I'm not saying that all everybody's starting at the same
- 21:01place, or has the same resources, but I am saying that
- 21:04when we start to get little glimpses of, Oh, when I do this,
- 21:09that happens when I say that, that happens when I say to do
- 21:14this or not do that, or whatever, me being myself, it
- 21:18has consequences both positive and negative. If you think about
- 21:23somebody who's an alcoholic, especially if they're a parent
- 21:27or in a marriage or a relationship or a family, or
- 21:29they just have friends who care about them, right? And they're
- 21:32starting to drink too much, and it starts to get out of control,
- 21:34and now they're driving drunk, and they're doing things right,
- 21:37they're not only having consequences on their own mental
- 21:40well being, sometimes their jobs, sometimes their families,
- 21:43sometimes their relationships. They lose those and there are
- 21:46consequences that they personally pay, but there's also
- 21:49other consequences. I remember when I was a bartender, and I
- 21:52would see people come in and day after day after day just
- 21:56drinking themselves slowly to death and the like I'm not
- 22:00saying like, Oh, poor me, because I was, you know, had to
- 22:04see that. But I will say, as a sensitive person, it weighed
- 22:07heavy on my hat. It's why I stopped bartending. It was one
- 22:10of the reasons I'm like, I don't want to come here every day and
- 22:13watch people slowly kill themselves, watch people get
- 22:16sloppy, watch people get belligerent and mean, watch
- 22:19people, you know, sitting at the bar, coming there every day
- 22:22because they're deathly lonely, but they don't talk to anybody
- 22:25about it, whatever, whatever, whatever. And again, I'm not
- 22:27judging people who drink. These are just examples of how I kind
- 22:32of see it. And one of the most powerful things that I saw this
- 22:35week that kind of points to this consequence of being yourself.
- 22:39Now this video might be months old, a year old. I don't even
- 22:42know. I just saw the video, and it just was like getting punched
- 22:45in the face. And it's a video of this guy, and I tried to find
- 22:49the real story, or the back story. I see different people
- 22:52saying different things about it, but I will say this, there's
- 22:55apparently a woman. She might be a woman of color. She's standing
- 22:58on her porch as she's in her yard, and apparently this guy
- 23:02has done this before. So there's a guy, a white guy, driving down
- 23:07the street in a pickup truck. She's just in her yard,
- 23:10whatever. Now he obviously has a problem with her. Some stories
- 23:14said it was because of her bumper stickers. Some stories
- 23:16said it was because she was black. Some stories said it was
- 23:18because he was a neighbor, and they don't get whatever. I don't
- 23:22really know the reason, and it doesn't on some level, on some
- 23:25level, it doesn't matter to the point that I'm trying to make.
- 23:28So he's driving down this quiet, little residential street in his
- 23:32truck. She's in her yard or on her porch, you don't know,
- 23:35because the vantage point is from her camera. She's filming,
- 23:38and she's filming this guy as he's driving down the street,
- 23:42and as he gets close to her house and he sees her, he
- 23:45basically turns his head to look at her, and he flips her the
- 23:49bird, right? He does the fuck you with his finger. Okay?
- 23:53Because he's distracted, because he's caught up in being himself,
- 23:57which is, I'm going to be this guy that flips off this woman
- 24:00who's in her yacht or whatever, he ends up swerving his car. He
- 24:04hit his truck, he scrapes up a packed car, bounces up onto the
- 24:10sidewalk and then slams into a concrete wall.
- 24:16And I'm watching this, and the whole time I'm just cringing.
- 24:18I'm cringing from everything, from the fact that this woman
- 24:22was filming him, which tells me this has probably happened
- 24:25before. She's been harassed, or he's mean or out of control, and
- 24:28whatever, she's documenting it for a reason that was like, Oh
- 24:32man, that hurt my hat. Then I see what he does, and I'm like,
- 24:36Oh my god. Can you imagine being this woman and having to deal
- 24:39with this shit? Now, again. I don't know that. I don't know
- 24:42the real story of what's going on, but I'm just, you know, from
- 24:45what I saw. Then I watch him wreck another person's car
- 24:50that's just packed on the street. Then he could have, he
- 24:53could have hit somebody, if anybody had been walking on that
- 24:56sidewalk, thank God there wasn't. And then he slams his
- 24:58own truck into the car and.
- 25:00Know what he says
- 25:02first of all, and I don't, I don't usually say this word, but
- 25:05I'm going to say it just so you get the this is not a word for
- 25:08whatever. I swear. I swear like a sailor, but this is just isn't
- 25:10something that you know what I tend to say, but this is what he
- 25:13says. He puts it in pack, he swings open his door, and he
- 25:17screams, god damn it.
- 25:21And the second thing he screams in her direction is, I fucking
- 25:25hate you.
- 25:28And then he says again, God damn it. And now he's having a
- 25:31tantrum like a toddler. He's like stomping his feet. And she
- 25:34just very calmly says, are you okay? And he yells, no. And now
- 25:38he's walking in the street looking at the car he just hit,
- 25:42and she says, are you hurt? And he says, Yes. And she says,
- 25:47physically. And he walks away. And what I hear is, I give up.
- 25:54Somebody else said somewhere that they interpreted it as I
- 25:57need help, but I heard I give up. And then he just kind of
- 26:00like, says, I'm gonna fucking die. And I'm
- 26:05just like, Oh, my God, this right here encapsulates the
- 26:09consequences of being yourself. Because he had no self control.
- 26:15He felt the need to flip this person off. And some people are
- 26:18like, Oh, it's instant comma, whatever. I found no joy in this
- 26:22video at all. The whole thing just made me sad. It was just
- 26:25like such a shit show of dysregulation, and this is what
- 26:30I'm talking about. If you have no self knowledge, if you have
- 26:35no self awareness, if you don't understand the workings of your
- 26:39own mind, like, seriously, we are I'm hitting my body right
- 26:43now. We are operating heavy machinery. You should understand
- 26:47how your brain works. You should get a book at the library, and
- 26:50if you can't read, listen to it on tape or something like that,
- 26:53but start to understand how your body and your brain and your
- 26:57nervous system works. Learn a little bit about trauma, learn a
- 27:00little bit about our history. Learn a little bit about, like,
- 27:03just all of it, right. Like, learn about how we find
- 27:08ourselves, where we are at this particular point in time. But
- 27:11start on the micro start with yourself. Start with yourself.
- 27:17Because whether we like it or not, there are consequences of
- 27:22us being ourselves, and we don't just inflict it on us. Animals
- 27:27pay the price all the time for people being themselves. Animals
- 27:32pay the negative consequences of people deciding that they don't
- 27:36have value, that their products that we wear and that we eat and
- 27:40that we murder and that we use for entertainment, right? There
- 27:43are consequences to us just being here, alive on the planet
- 27:47and what we're doing to the planet, in the environment and
- 27:50Mother Nature. Our choices matter, our self knowledge
- 27:53matters, our self awareness matters.
- 27:57I can literally go on and on and on about this, right? But it's
- 28:01so important you guys, am I going to contribute to society,
- 28:04or am I going to be a menace to society? And when you don't know
- 28:06yourself, when you don't understand the consequences of
- 28:10you being you, right? There are positive consequences, your
- 28:13brilliance, own that that's beautiful, but do not turn a
- 28:16blind eye to the negative consequences, right? Going out
- 28:22and inflicting yourself on others, you're also inflicting
- 28:25yourself, sometimes on yourself. Now, I can't make people want to
- 28:30do that kind of work. I just say I'm here when people are ready
- 28:35to do that work. You know, I'm easy to find. Karen kenney.com
- 28:39you know, this is the work that I continue to do on myself,
- 28:42because I got to keep an eye on my own nonsense and my own
- 28:45bullshit. You know what I mean? If I have a blind spot, I expect
- 28:48my friends, my sweetie, my best friends, right to go like, hey,
- 28:52hey, like, compassionately, right? And, like, do it kindly,
- 28:56or I'm not interested. But you can say anything to me. It's
- 28:58about the way that you say it to me, right? If I know that you're
- 29:02on my team, if I know you're on my side and you're trying to be
- 29:04helpful, I can hear just about anything. So here's the thing,
- 29:08you guys, that's where I'm gonna leave it with. I gotta run. I
- 29:10gotta go. I have a client. Actually, I gotta go. I gotta go
- 29:13give a Thai Yoga massage. So just thank you for tuning in.
- 29:17Thank you for being a part of my podcast. Family. Yay. For seven
- 29:21years, I'm so excited. I hope something that I shared from my
- 29:24heart today also lands in yours. If it was helpful in some way,
- 29:28share it with somebody else. Or send up a flare, let me know,
- 29:32because I got to tell you, sometimes having a podcast or a
- 29:34newsletter or whatever, you're just kind of sending it out into
- 29:38the ethers and you don't know, like you, yeah, I could look at
- 29:41my stats and be like, Oh, this many people listen, but I don't
- 29:43know how long they're listening. I mean, I guess I could really
- 29:45do the deep dive, but it's so nice to feel like there's a
- 29:49connection in a community. So if I share something and it
- 29:52resonates with you, or it makes you think, or you go, Oh, or
- 29:55even if you disagree a little bit, whatever, right? It's nice.
- 29:58Send up a flare. Let me know. Reach out and.
- 30:00Talk to me and let me know I bump into people out in public.
- 30:03Sometimes I have no idea, no idea that they listen to the
- 30:06show, and then all of a sudden they'll say, Oh, I listened to
- 30:09the show. Like, hearing that. It's like, it's nice. It's like
- 30:11getting a little warm hug, right? It's sweet. It's like,
- 30:14oh, maybe this is, like, is landing for people, or making a
- 30:17difference, or whatever. And we all want to know that, don't we?
- 30:20We all want to know that it's something that we're doing or
- 30:23how we're trying, you know, it's it matters.
- 30:26It's not why we do it. You know, I'm not doing it for the likes,
- 30:30the clicks, the follows, the whatever, but it is nice to know
- 30:32that it is landing in people's hats. So I appreciate you so
- 30:37much. Thank you for being here. Thank you for listening wherever
- 30:39you go. May you leave yourself in the animals and the
- 30:42environment and the other people that you come into contact with
- 30:45better than how you found them wherever you go? May you and
- 30:49your energy and your love and your presence? May it be a
- 30:53positive consequence? May it be a blessing? Bye.
- 30:58Hey. Thanks so much for listening to the show. I really
- 31:01love spending some time together. Now, if you dig the
- 31:04show or know someone that could benefit from this episode,
- 31:08please share it with them and help me to spread the good word
