- 0:05Speaker 1: You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 0:08Speaker 1: the best youth football coverage. Here's O.C.
- 0:11Speaker 2: From the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in our
- 0:30Speaker 2: college football and pro football and everything insider, Jeff Schwartz. Hey, buddy.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Welcome back to the show. Glad to be here. Did
- 0:39Speaker 1: I hear correctly in the update, I think it was,
- 0:43Speaker 1: that Utah, the last time they played Idaho, they lost
- 0:47Speaker 1: to them in 93 or something? Did I hear that correctly?
- 0:49Speaker 2: It's 99, I think, a revenge game.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Revenge spot, yeah. Yeah.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Morgan Scali was a player on that team, if I'm
- 0:58Speaker 2: not mistaken.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I know Utah hasn't always been what they are, but
- 1:04Speaker 1: that feels odd that they lost the last time they
- 1:07Speaker 1: played each other.
- 1:08Speaker 2: What do you want me to say about it?
- 1:11Speaker 1: This is odd. What did you make of the NFL
- 1:13Speaker 1: head coach going after me this week? I need your
- 1:16Speaker 1: opinion on this. What do you think? I didn't see it.
- 1:20Speaker 1: You saw it. I didn't. You're online. I forgot. Yeah,
- 1:24Speaker 1: Sean Payton, I talked about the Broncos, and I didn't
- 1:27Speaker 1: think Bo Nix was going to get any better, and
- 1:29Speaker 1: I misspoke on one thing about him throwing the ball deep,
- 1:32Speaker 1: and Sean Payton tweeted at the clip of me talking, saying,
- 1:36Speaker 1: you can tell who works at it and who doesn't.
- 1:39Speaker 2: What?
- 1:40Speaker 1: Sean Payton went after my guy? It was his second
- 1:43Speaker 1: tweet of the year. The other one was like Drew
- 1:44Speaker 1: Brees Hall of Fame and then Jeff Schwartz. There's two
- 1:47Speaker 1: tweets so far in the calendar year.
- 1:50Speaker 2: You're right, by the way. It was 1993 that Utah
- 1:52Speaker 2: played against... I do listen, believe it or not. Not
- 1:54Speaker 2: to you, but I do listen to the voice guy. Okay,
- 1:58Speaker 2: so look, I guess what we've done now is we're
- 2:02Speaker 2: declaring war on Sean Payton. And now we have to
- 2:06Speaker 2: hate him. If you're a Broncos fan in this market,
- 2:08Speaker 2: you have to choose between Jeff Schwartz and Sean Payton.
- 2:12Speaker 2: And I hope you choose wisely.
- 2:14Speaker 1: They're probably going to choose Sean Payton, but that's okay
- 2:15Speaker 1: with me.
- 2:16Speaker 2: That's probably right.
- 2:19Speaker 1: As far as you can see this, I got more
- 2:20Speaker 1: texts about this than I did about the birth of
- 2:22Speaker 1: my kids.
- 2:23Speaker 2: No.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I didn't know he tweeted me. So what I do is,
- 2:27Speaker 1: you know, whenever a tweet goes on, I just mute
- 2:29Speaker 1: the tweet immediately, right? So I don't see any replies.
- 2:31Speaker 1: It's the only way to do social media. And so
- 2:34Speaker 1: they put this Broncos clip out. I muted it immediately.
- 2:38Speaker 1: So I didn't see any notification. I didn't see any
- 2:40Speaker 1: comments on it. And then I started getting like, hey, man,
- 2:43Speaker 1: hang in there, text messages. I was like, what? because
- 2:47Speaker 1: I talked about the Broncos. Like, hang in there. What
- 2:49Speaker 1: do you mean? Someone DMed me stats to back up
- 2:53Speaker 1: my argument.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, I know.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I know what I said. What are these stats for?
- 2:57Speaker 1: And they're like, hang in there. I'm like, what is happening?
- 3:00Speaker 1: And then someone screenshot and sent me the Sean Payton thing.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I had no idea for probably at least an hour.
- 3:05Speaker 1: No idea. He tweeted at me. Wow. Yeah.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Why do you hate Bo Nix?
- 3:12Speaker 1: I don't think the question on the show was. Will
- 3:14Speaker 1: he get better or worse? Those are my two options.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I chose worse. Okay. It goes fair.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I do think he is just what he is at
- 3:26Speaker 2: this point.
- 3:26Speaker 1: That's what I said.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Looks like the same quarterback he was in college. He's consistent.
- 3:31Speaker 2: He's not going to make mistakes, but he's not going
- 3:32Speaker 2: to push the ball down.
- 3:33Speaker 1: You just copy what I'm saying now.
- 3:35Speaker 2: I'm quoting you directly.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, I know. That's what I said.
- 3:39Speaker 2: That's what you said on first things first.
- 3:41Speaker 1: The only thing that I misspoke on. was I meant
- 3:44Speaker 1: to say he needs to be more accurate throwing the
- 3:47Speaker 1: ball down the field. And instead I said, he needs
- 3:49Speaker 1: to just push the ball down the field. And I got,
- 3:52Speaker 1: you know, everyone got angry at me because he has,
- 3:54Speaker 1: he does throw the ball down the field, but he's
- 3:56Speaker 1: not accurate at it. And I understand people will say,
- 3:58Speaker 1: he's got 19 passes of over 20 plus yards. He'll
- 4:01Speaker 1: be 17th in completion percentage of balls over 20 yards.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Like that's okay. That doesn't mean he's, he's necessarily good
- 4:10Speaker 1: at it. Um, So Broncos fans are not happy with me.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Wow. And apparently neither is Sean Payton. I love that.
- 4:18Speaker 2: That's good to, you know, you get on the radar
- 4:23Speaker 2: for an NFL head coach. It can't be bad. There's
- 4:25Speaker 2: no such thing as bad attention in this business.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I hope Fox pays me a million dollars now to
- 4:30Speaker 1: do TV. We'll see what happens. I'll keep you updated.
- 4:35Speaker 1: All right.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Overrated, underrated, appropriately rated. Garrett Bowles as the 37th best
- 4:41Speaker 2: overall player in the NFL Top 100.
- 4:46Speaker 1: That's very high. 37th best player in the NFL? Yeah, 37th.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Last year, he was ranked number 98. Last year was
- 4:55Speaker 2: his first ever first-team All-Pro nod. He finished with the
- 5:02Speaker 2: highest pass block win rate of his career, which was
- 5:06Speaker 2: 94% top 10 in the NFL.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I think that's still high. The Broncos' line is really good.
- 5:14Speaker 1: They're really fun to watch. They've really grown over the years.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Garrett Bowles has grown. Quinn Miners has gotten a lot better. Obviously,
- 5:21Speaker 1: he's an all-pro now, right guard. That still feels high.
- 5:23Speaker 1: I guess... The thing about this thing is not every
- 5:27Speaker 1: quarterback can be 1 through 30, right? That's why it
- 5:31Speaker 1: feels like 37 feels a little high for him. But
- 5:34Speaker 1: he did great year last year. It's not the worst
- 5:36Speaker 1: spot I've seen someone rate.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Fred Warner at 20.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Feels about right.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Okay. Panay Sewell, your guy, at 13 overall. No, sorry,
- 5:45Speaker 2: 12 overall.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Is there any offensive lineman ahead of him? He's probably
- 5:51Speaker 1: number one, right?
- 5:52Speaker 2: He is the highest-rated offensive lineman on the list.
- 6:02Speaker 1: That's fair. Twelve? Okay.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Twelve.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:05Speaker 2: The blurb says... I think he's a.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I think Dwayne Johnson's better, but that's just my opinion on...
- 6:11Speaker 1: I think that we... One thing in the offensive line
- 6:16Speaker 1: community that we do... I think, to a fault is
- 6:20Speaker 1: we love run blocking, right? We love the cool run blocking.
- 6:24Speaker 1: We love the cool pancakes. We do not take into
- 6:27Speaker 1: consideration pass protection, and Lane Johnson is significantly better than
- 6:30Speaker 1: Penesol with that, and that's a tougher job. Pass protection
- 6:32Speaker 1: is tougher to do than run blocking, and Lane gets
- 6:37Speaker 1: no help. I just think Lane's a better pass protector. That,
- 6:40Speaker 1: to me, weights the offensive lineman differently, and I know
- 6:44Speaker 1: people might not agree with that. I get that, but
- 6:46Speaker 1: I think Lane is the best right tackle in the NFL.
- 6:51Speaker 1: I know Panay's going to the left.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Panay's going to left tackle. What do you think that
- 6:54Speaker 2: looks like? How steep is that learning curve?
- 6:57Speaker 1: Well, remember, he won that one trophy in college at
- 6:59Speaker 1: left tackle. Yeah, that's good. That's pretty good, right, I think.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And if you recall, he played left tackle for, I think,
- 7:08Speaker 1: the first six weeks in Detroit. Remember, he had a
- 7:10Speaker 1: really tough preseason at right tackle, and Taylor Decker got hurt,
- 7:14Speaker 1: and he went into left tackle and played really, really well.
- 7:16Speaker 1: and then went back out to right tackle when Decker
- 7:18Speaker 1: came back. So I have the utmost faith in him.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I really do. I don't think that's going to be
- 7:24Speaker 1: a problem.
- 7:28Speaker 2: Puka Nakua rated number six best player overall in the league.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Only one receiver higher than him. Do you agree? Properly rated, overrated, underrated?
- 7:38Speaker 1: Who's higher than him? JSN?
- 7:39Speaker 2: No. Jamar Chase.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, that's fair. Okay. Yeah, that's fair. I mean,
- 7:45Speaker 1: Pukunuku has got to deal with some of this off-field stuff,
- 7:48Speaker 1: but I think that he's as talented as any one
- 7:51Speaker 1: receiver in the NFL.
- 7:53Speaker 2: The number one overall player in the league, Miles Garrett.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Yeah. That's fair.
- 8:01Speaker 2: And now it's official. We've talked about this. We both
- 8:04Speaker 2: thought it was going to happen, and it is happening.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Aaron Donald, Miles Garrett, officially together on that defensive line
- 8:12Speaker 2: for the Rams.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Oh, buddy, good luck. I don't know. I
- 8:18Speaker 1: don't know. I just talked to my brother on my podcast.
- 8:22Speaker 1: New podcast, always. Schwartz Football Show. Mitch and I are
- 8:24Speaker 1: doing a show now together.
- 8:25Speaker 2: When do I get to be a guest?
- 8:28Speaker 1: Today. I'm going to re-record, actually, for you to come on.
- 8:30Speaker 1: We were talking about this. I don't even know how
- 8:34Speaker 1: do you stop this. There's no great way to stop
- 8:39Speaker 1: both of them on the left side of the line
- 8:40Speaker 1: of scrimmage.
- 8:42Speaker 2: You know what's amazing? So you and I spent all
- 8:44Speaker 2: those years together on Pac-12 radio, and there were some
- 8:47Speaker 2: awesome linebackers that came through. Nate Landman is a guy
- 8:51Speaker 2: that I really liked because of his background. Omar Spates,
- 8:54Speaker 2: we talked about him a lot when he was at
- 8:56Speaker 2: Oregon State. Those guys are going to be playing behind
- 9:00Speaker 2: this defensive line. Nate Landman was already a tackling machine.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Nate Landman is now just unblocked on every down, basically.
- 9:08Speaker 1: It's just going to be... A free throw for everyone.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I mean, even the other side of the line of scrimmage, right?
- 9:14Speaker 1: You have to worry about Miles and Donald. How about
- 9:18Speaker 1: the other defensive linemen? They're going to have such a
- 9:20Speaker 1: fun time this season not getting double teamed ever. And
- 9:24Speaker 1: then Donald will work his way in. I don't think
- 9:25Speaker 1: right away he's going to play. I'm not even sure
- 9:27Speaker 1: he plays in Australia. That's a long fight for an
- 9:30Speaker 1: old guy to have to endure and then go play football.
- 9:32Speaker 1: He hasn't played in three years. But I do think
- 9:34Speaker 1: that he's going to be good. I don't think Aaron
- 9:36Speaker 1: Donald will come back. Will he be 100% of himself?
- 9:38Speaker 1: Probably not. But he's definitely not going to come back
- 9:41Speaker 1: if he thinks he's going to stink.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Speaking of that Australia game, Sean McVay said that they
- 9:51Speaker 2: are arriving in Melbourne 24 hours before the game, like
- 9:55Speaker 2: a normal road trip.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:58Speaker 2: What do you think of that? I mean, that feels crazy.
- 10:02Speaker 2: I don't know how many people have traveled that far
- 10:05Speaker 2: have gone to New Zealand or Australia. It is one
- 10:08Speaker 2: of the toughest trips you're going to make from a
- 10:11Speaker 2: body clock standpoint. So I don't know how they manage that.
- 10:15Speaker 2: The Niners are going out a week early. The Rams
- 10:19Speaker 2: are showing up a day early.
- 10:22Speaker 1: So I think their thought is about recovery, that this
- 10:28Speaker 1: keeps them on the same, close enough to the same
- 10:34Speaker 1: time zone calendar, you know, not time zone, just time
- 10:37Speaker 1: zone they would be on back home. Like it just
- 10:41Speaker 1: keeps them more uniform for when they return, Sean. And
- 10:45Speaker 1: that's what I think their thought process is here. it's
- 10:49Speaker 1: just that, you know, we, we have less on the
- 10:51Speaker 1: way back. We have less to worry about than we
- 10:55Speaker 1: do going there. And we could suck it up to
- 10:58Speaker 1: go there, but that coming back, we want to be
- 11:01Speaker 1: as close as possible to our time.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Zone right now, as we are speaking, it is five
- 11:07Speaker 2: 19 in the morning on Wednesday in Melbourne, Australia. So
- 11:13Speaker 2: it's a big, it's a big time difference.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it is. But I think they're hoping on the
- 11:17Speaker 1: way back that there's less of an adjustment period coming
- 11:19Speaker 1: home if they just are there for 24 hours. That's
- 11:22Speaker 1: my guess.
- 11:24Speaker 2: This is a fun fact. It's apropos of nothing. But
- 11:27Speaker 2: if you look it up right now, you can confirm.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Right now it's 519 a.m. Wednesday morning in Melbourne, Australia,
- 11:34Speaker 2: which is close to the east coast of Australia. The
- 11:38Speaker 2: middle of Australia, South Australia, Adelaide, where I fought one time.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Is a half hour different. It's a half hour time
- 11:44Speaker 2: zone change.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Interesting. Did you win that fight?
- 11:49Speaker 2: I did. But isn't that such a weird thing?
- 11:52Speaker 1: That's odd.
- 11:53Speaker 2: A half hour difference time zone?
- 11:55Speaker 1: How did you win that fight? What was the decision?
- 11:57Speaker 1: How did it happen?
- 11:58Speaker 2: I knocked out the guy in like 45 seconds or something.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Good for you. What a waste of a trip. 45
- 12:03Speaker 1: second knockout?
- 12:03Speaker 2: Oh, it was awesome though because the fight, when they
- 12:08Speaker 2: take you like super far away sometimes.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 2: You fight at a super strange time locally so that
- 12:14Speaker 2: it's on television in the U S at like a
- 12:16Speaker 2: normal time. So we fought at like noon on a
- 12:20Speaker 2: Sunday so that it would be on it, like whatever
- 12:22Speaker 2: it was, 10 PM on a Saturday. And so walked
- 12:27Speaker 2: out of the arena after fighting and it's like the
- 12:30Speaker 2: middle of the day. And we just went to an
- 12:32Speaker 2: Aussie rules football game later and just hung out.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Nice. Okay. That's cool. No swelling, no bruising for you.
- 12:39Speaker 1: I like it.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Uh, TCU North Carolina played at the Aviva Stadium Dublin kickoff, whatever,
- 12:46Speaker 2: the Aer Lingus kickoff classic, and TCU stunk. They looked terrible.
- 12:52Speaker 2: They looked undisciplined. They looked sloppy. I know first game
- 12:56Speaker 2: of the season, you kind of expect a little bit
- 12:58Speaker 2: of this. I didn't expect them to be so bad,
- 13:01Speaker 2: especially offensively, because Sonny Dykes kind of butters his bread there.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Should I be overreacting the way that I am?
- 13:09Speaker 1: So I think that the general rule of thumb is
- 13:12Speaker 1: that you're never as good or bad as your first game, right?
- 13:16Speaker 1: Like it's your first game. It takes time to work
- 13:19Speaker 1: into what you want to be as a team. But
- 13:22Speaker 1: I will say, Sean, I've kind of been hardened by
- 13:25Speaker 1: this over the years. I'm going to steal this a
- 13:26Speaker 1: little bit from Dan Rubenstein, who does Solid Verbal, a
- 13:29Speaker 1: good friend of mine, and we've had him on many
- 13:31Speaker 1: times when we used to do radio. It's like the
- 13:35Speaker 1: FCS transfer from FCS– to power for a ball at quarterback,
- 13:42Speaker 1: not very good a lot of times. Like, we love
- 13:46Speaker 1: to talk about him in a way that, like, is grand.
- 13:51Speaker 1: But this was a Harvard kid making his first start
- 13:55Speaker 1: against a real, actual, like, defense, you know? Like, it's just...
- 14:03Speaker 1: it's hard. And we do this all the time where
- 14:05Speaker 1: we just look at these FCS quarterbacks. Like, yeah, they
- 14:08Speaker 1: could just do it. They're moving up. How cool is this?
- 14:10Speaker 1: The best quarterback at UC Davis is now playing for
- 14:12Speaker 1: Oregon state. It's hard, dude. I, I, I think that
- 14:19Speaker 1: we overlooked that every single time. This is another situation
- 14:21Speaker 1: where you had the same situation pop up where this
- 14:24Speaker 1: Harvard kid just wasn't ready to play in North Carolina yet.
- 14:27Speaker 1: And he might, well, there's, he might be ready in,
- 14:31Speaker 1: in three weeks to play. better, but he just wasn't
- 14:34Speaker 1: ready yet offensively. Okay.
- 14:38Speaker 2: I'm now scratching off TCU as a threat in the
- 14:41Speaker 2: Big 12 Conference.
- 14:43Speaker 1: I don't think it's great. North Carolina didn't play well either.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Both teams tried to lose this game. They didn't, but
- 14:49Speaker 1: they both tried.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Week one, the week one slate is pretty lackluster, actually.
- 14:56Speaker 2: Week one slate. What games have your attention? I know
- 15:00Speaker 2: it's not really Utah-Idaho.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Is that Thursday, too?
- 15:04Speaker 2: Thursday night, yeah.
- 15:06Speaker 1: You going to that?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Colorado-Georgia Tech also, same night, which is maybe.
- 15:10Speaker 1: So, I took Colorado plus seven. Okay. I hate it,
- 15:15Speaker 1: but I think Georgia Tech, like, lost a lot last season,
- 15:19Speaker 1: from last season. Quarterback, OC. The thing about it is that, like,
- 15:23Speaker 1: I think seven points allows me to at least push
- 15:27Speaker 1: on any sort of Deion Sanders coach management issues in
- 15:30Speaker 1: the game. You know what I mean? Like... Let's say
- 15:36Speaker 1: they're up three. He does a dumb clock management and
- 15:39Speaker 1: they lose by four. I'm good. I'm set. Game's tied.
- 15:42Speaker 1: They lose by seven or three. I feel like I'm
- 15:45Speaker 1: set with seven to avoid... I do not like betting
- 15:49Speaker 1: on coaches I don't think are good. And Dion has
- 15:51Speaker 1: shown game management is not his strong suit. But I
- 15:55Speaker 1: think Juju Lewis is an interesting quarterback. His first game
- 15:58Speaker 1: with a brand new offense, it really... Georgia Tech won't
- 16:02Speaker 1: be prepared for it. They won't have seen this go-go
- 16:04Speaker 1: in the flesh. I think Colorado covers that game. What
- 16:10Speaker 1: are the games on the weekend? Of course, LSU, Clemson,
- 16:16Speaker 1: Ole Miss, Louisville. I've got to do some more on that.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I've done a lot of the West Coast schools already
- 16:21Speaker 1: and prepped for them. I'd be pretty upset if Oregon
- 16:25Speaker 1: did not cover 24.5 against Boise State. I think we're
- 16:27Speaker 1: much better than that Boise, and we should be able
- 16:30Speaker 1: to handle business there. I think USC-Fresno State is going
- 16:34Speaker 1: to be over. I do really think that they're going
- 16:38Speaker 1: to score a lot in that game. Look, I know
- 16:42Speaker 1: USC fans that didn't show up for the game on Saturday,
- 16:44Speaker 1: but I got them covered with the film review. Sean,
- 16:50Speaker 1: if I told you that USC played San Jose State,
- 16:55Speaker 1: who defensively turned like 24% of production from their bad
- 16:58Speaker 1: defense last year And they had zero explosive plays on
- 17:02Speaker 1: offense the entire game. Do you think that's odd, right?
- 17:05Speaker 2: It's not great.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Right? People think it's weird when I say that. That's
- 17:09Speaker 1: the truth of it. They didn't know explosive plays.
- 17:12Speaker 2: What is an explosive run in the NFL, Jeff Schwartz definition?
- 17:20Speaker 1: I think it's different in college NFL because it's harder
- 17:25Speaker 1: to get. Yeah. But I think explosive plays in college,
- 17:29Speaker 1: I've got a running account that's 15 yards in college football. Okay.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Explosive run play college football. I'm looking right now. Yeah,
- 17:40Speaker 2: a rushing play of 10 or more. They had a
- 17:42Speaker 2: couple rushes of 11 and one of 16 in this game.
- 17:46Speaker 2: But it went down as no explosive plays on.
- 17:50Speaker 1: The website. So I don't know. Yeah.
- 17:53Speaker 2: I mean, even if you only have, I mean, you
- 17:54Speaker 2: had fewer than San Jose State did.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Okay.
- 17:57Speaker 2: In that game, if you're USC.
- 17:59Speaker 1: The two starting running backs for USC, the longest rush
- 18:02Speaker 1: was 9-11. That's tough. In the first half, they rushed
- 18:08Speaker 1: for like 111 yards, and 56 of that were on
- 18:11Speaker 1: the first drive.
- 18:15Speaker 2: You and I have talked over the years a lot
- 18:16Speaker 2: about UCLA. We were covering the conference when they hired
- 18:19Speaker 2: Martin Jarmond, who was supposed to be this wunderkind 39-year-old guy.
- 18:25Speaker 2: save everything, athletic director, your parents are UCLA alum, if
- 18:29Speaker 2: I'm not mistaken. They just fired the guy. He's $ 220
- 18:33Speaker 2: million in the hole over the last five years, despite
- 18:36Speaker 2: the fact that they joined the Big Ten, which is
- 18:39Speaker 2: supposed to be the thing that solves your problems. What
- 18:42Speaker 2: do you make of UCLA's leadership problem?
- 18:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know how you get out of $ 260
- 18:48Speaker 1: million in debt and still be competitive in sports, right, Sean?
- 18:52Speaker 1: Feels like impossible to do.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Yeah, it feels like Unless you have a mega-billionaire donor
- 19:00Speaker 2: that can wipe out that debt and hit a reset
- 19:02Speaker 2: button for you, which I don't even know if that's allowed.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know what you do. Yeah.
- 19:09Speaker 1: I mean, wasn't the change to the Big Ten supposed
- 19:12Speaker 1: to alleviate some of this?
- 19:13Speaker 2: Yes, and it hasn't.
- 19:15Speaker 1: You know what's funny is the only school that really
- 19:17Speaker 1: has benefited from that is Oregon. I'm not sure USC
- 19:20Speaker 1: can claim they've benefited from being the Big Ten or
- 19:22Speaker 1: UCLA or Washington. Oregon's the only one that seems to
- 19:25Speaker 1: have actually benefited from this move.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Have they?
- 19:29Speaker 1: I think we have. We're still out. The $ 35 million
- 19:34Speaker 1: that Oregon doesn't get because we get a half share
- 19:37Speaker 1: is really impactful for other sports. Oregon had, I think,
- 19:41Speaker 1: two freshman All-American baseball players leave for the SEC this
- 19:44Speaker 1: past year, this past portal, like in June. And the
- 19:47Speaker 1: reason why they just can't pay as much. And part
- 19:49Speaker 1: of that is they can't pay as much because sec
- 19:52Speaker 1: schools make more money than they get.
- 19:54Speaker 2: You know, we could do like a whole segment on
- 19:59Speaker 2: whether or not Oregon actually benefited from going to the
- 20:02Speaker 2: big 10, but.
- 20:03Speaker 1: Well, it was me. Are we saying that like, if, if,
- 20:06Speaker 1: If USC and UCLA stayed out west, I would have
- 20:09Speaker 1: said stay in the Pac-12. Once they left, you had
- 20:10Speaker 1: to leave. Sure.
- 20:12Speaker 2: You had to leave. I just don't know that, I mean,
- 20:15Speaker 2: I don't know that, is Oregon better off from a
- 20:19Speaker 2: national perception standpoint?
- 20:21Speaker 1: I think so. Interesting. Winning the Big Ten, obviously, just
- 20:25Speaker 1: feels more impactful than winning the Big 12. You're on Fox.
- 20:29Speaker 2: I don't think winning the conference matters like it used
- 20:31Speaker 2: to because of the expanded college football playoff. That's what
- 20:34Speaker 2: we judge you on. Like Texas Tech won the Big
- 20:37Speaker 2: 12 last year, but everyone's looking at them through the lens.
- 20:41Speaker 2: If you got mollywhopped in your playoff opportunity, winning a
- 20:46Speaker 2: conference championship is great on the conference level. but Oregon
- 20:49Speaker 2: is now playing in the national waters and has been
- 20:52Speaker 2: for years.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Sure, but you're not getting a second. You can't say
- 20:56Speaker 1: you have one upset in the Pac-12. You're out of
- 20:58Speaker 1: the playoff berth, right? That's not going to happen in
- 21:00Speaker 1: the Big Ten. That's fair. And so that's, I think,
- 21:04Speaker 1: a big difference for Oregon.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Buddy Stevens got fired at East Mississippi. Are you okay?
- 21:11Speaker 1: Thank you for asking. There are things in life you
- 21:16Speaker 1: just can't explain your pain from, and this is one
- 21:18Speaker 1: of them. Uh, I'm just, uh, I've been in a
- 21:21Speaker 1: bad mood all day. Meredith called me. I'm like, I'm heartbroken. Just,
- 21:25Speaker 1: it just was, man, it's so sad. There are a
- 21:28Speaker 1: lot of Saturday stupids we have not been able to
- 21:30Speaker 1: do recently, including the home homeboy decided to be a
- 21:33Speaker 1: fake 49er.
- 21:35Speaker 2: I love that so much.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Kurt Herbstre explaining his method for getting boys. I'm like,
- 21:40Speaker 1: do you really have to? Is that really necessary to
- 21:42Speaker 1: talk about that?
- 21:43Speaker 2: Well, some of us don't have a son, so I
- 21:46Speaker 2: need to be paying attention.
- 21:47Speaker 1: You should pay attention to that. I think the dog
- 21:50Speaker 1: thing has got it. We've got to be over there
- 21:52Speaker 1: pretty soon, right? Like the dog thing. People don't find
- 21:54Speaker 1: that cute anymore, do they?
- 21:55Speaker 2: They do, and he got his own NIL deal this year,
- 21:58Speaker 2: so you're not going to get less of him. You're
- 21:59Speaker 2: going to get more.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Did you realize that he replaced the dead dog with
- 22:03Speaker 1: a new dog within like four days? Yes.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Well, he never just had one dog, though.
- 22:08Speaker 1: He has four dogs. But the new Pete, he was
- 22:14Speaker 1: on the road with him within three days. There was
- 22:16Speaker 1: just a transition right immediately to the new dog. No
- 22:18Speaker 1: mourning period whatsoever for the old dog.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I know. It's tough.
- 22:23Speaker 1: But yeah, the fake 49er guy is incredible.
- 22:28Speaker 2: I'm sad I didn't come up with the idea and
- 22:31Speaker 2: scam Pete. scam my way into some success.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Did you watch him running routes on the, on the,
- 22:35Speaker 1: in the sand? Just incredibly funny. Yes.
- 22:38Speaker 2: I'm so like, I thought that catfish, the television show
- 22:43Speaker 2: and catfish, the documentary made it. So you can't catch,
- 22:46Speaker 2: you can't catfish people anymore, but you still can. Folks
- 22:50Speaker 2: don't realize like you don't learn from other people's mistakes.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Apparently it blows my mind. He left a voice memo
- 22:58Speaker 1: on one of these girls phones. It was like, To
- 23:00Speaker 1: clear waivers in the NFL, they have you to clear emotionally, mentally, physically,
- 23:05Speaker 1: and emotionally, and I only cleared one of the three.
- 23:09Speaker 1: So funny, dude.
- 23:12Speaker 2: All right, we're overclocked because that's what I do every
- 23:15Speaker 2: single time.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Oh, Dan Lynch is texting us. Hello, Dan. No, he's
- 23:20Speaker 1: not listening right now, but he's texting me.
- 23:22Speaker 2: He would never actually listen to my show, our former producer,
- 23:25Speaker 2: Dan Lynch.
- 23:26Speaker 1: No, he never would.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Appreciate you, dude. Enjoy the games this weekend. We'll chat
- 23:30Speaker 2: next week.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I'm going to Eugene, by the way. It should be fun.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Oh, you are?
- 23:34Speaker 1: Bring the kids up.
- 23:34Speaker 2: For the Boise game? Yeah.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Nice. Should be fun.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Bringing the kids.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Bringing the kids.
- 23:39Speaker 2: By the way, we got the save the date invitation thing.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Sure. Whatever Meredith is doing.
- 23:46Speaker 2: And my wife, she doesn't. get excited about anything that
- 23:52Speaker 2: involves my life ever. But I showed her that and
- 23:56Speaker 2: she like jumped up and down celebrate. She's like, yes,
- 23:59Speaker 2: I've always wanted to go to a bar mitzvah.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Can I tell you how we're, how this is being framed?
- 24:05Speaker 1: I think like, so Merritt did not get a wedding
- 24:07Speaker 1: in Charlotte. Our wedding was in Los Angeles. It was
- 24:10Speaker 1: mostly my friends. This is, this is her like, get back.
- 24:15Speaker 1: This is like her, like, she's like, we're inviting 400 people.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Wow.
- 24:19Speaker 1: She claims. All right. So she was texting everyone the
- 24:23Speaker 1: exact information. I was like, can you just create a
- 24:25Speaker 1: link for people to look at? You don't have to
- 24:27Speaker 1: text everyone the same exact text. Send them a link
- 24:30Speaker 1: with all the information. So I've told you about where
- 24:34Speaker 1: we're doing this party, right? Yes.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Don't repeat it. It's going to be incredible. We're the
- 24:39Speaker 2: only one who's doing it like this. It's not going
- 24:42Speaker 2: to be public information, but it is going to be awesome.
- 24:44Speaker 1: It's a great idea.
- 24:45Speaker 2: It's a wonderful idea.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Yeah. We're going to hire a band. I think we
- 24:49Speaker 1: looked at some bands recently.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:53Speaker 1: All my son wants is wings. That's what he said.
- 24:55Speaker 2: To eat. He wants just wings?
- 24:58Speaker 1: He's like, you better have wings there. I was like, okay, sure.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Whatever you want, man. The greatest.
- 25:05Speaker 2: I also showed my wife the video of him prepping
- 25:08Speaker 2: to go to the bat mitzvah.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah.
- 25:10Speaker 2: It was awesome.
- 25:11Speaker 1: He went to a second one this week. He's so
- 25:13Speaker 1: much cooler than me. He just runs into all his friends.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I didn't have friends. Good for him.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Well, now you got one.
- 25:22Speaker 1: It's me. Who, foe?
- 25:23Speaker 2: No, it's me.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Oh, you. Okay. Sorry.
- 25:26Speaker 2: All right.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Thanks, dude. All right. Bye, buddy. Talk to you guys later.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz. I love that we can just go anywhere
- 25:32Speaker 2: when we talk to Jeff.
