- 0:00Speaker 1: Northern Illinois is playing Fresno State in the famous sideahoe
- 0:05Speaker 1: potato bow, and Presnent State had driven down and even
- 0:08Speaker 1: centered the ball right in the middle of field a
- 0:09Speaker 1: chip shot to win em sitting there thinking Northern Illinois
- 0:14Speaker 1: had that high water mark of beating Notre Dame in
- 0:17Speaker 1: South Bend early this year, and here's Notre Dame in
- 0:20Speaker 1: the quarterfinals of the college football playoff and NIU is going
- 0:24Speaker 1: to wind up after all is said and done at
- 0:26Speaker 1: seven and six, I'm losing the bowl game.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah, except President of State missed the field goal.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Missed the chip shot straight on field goal. It was
- 0:35Speaker 1: about twenty two to twenty five yards something like that.
- 0:37Speaker 1: So they're going overtime there in Boise, because that's what
- 0:40Speaker 1: you want to do when a cold afternoons, go overtime.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Play more football there than Boise Idahoa.
- 0:44Speaker 1: All right back here and from the head coaches of
- 0:49Speaker 1: this Chick fil a Peach Bowl, let's move on to
- 0:54Speaker 1: something from Kenny Dillingham asked about Quinn Ewers, the long
- 0:57Speaker 1: orange quarterback, and the type of challenges that Quinn poses
- 1:00Speaker 1: for his team.
- 1:01Speaker 3: And Quinn, obviously, I recruited Quinn a little bit out
- 1:05Speaker 3: of high school, so I got to watch him. He
- 1:06Speaker 3: doesn't even know I recruited him because I had no
- 1:08Speaker 3: chance to sign him, so I never really talked to him,
- 1:10Speaker 3: but I watched him, and he's a phenomenal player. He's accurate,
- 1:15Speaker 3: can extend plays, super intelligent. You can tell when he
- 1:18Speaker 3: gets to the line of scrimmage. One of the things
- 1:20Speaker 3: I don't think gets praised enough is smart quarterbacks that
- 1:24Speaker 3: get you into good place And when you watch him play,
- 1:27Speaker 3: you see him getting them into good plays consistently.
- 1:31Speaker 4: And those are the dangerous guys, the guys that.
- 1:34Speaker 3: When there's nine second stuff from the clock checks you
- 1:36Speaker 3: into a touchdown.
- 1:37Speaker 4: And he does that consistently.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I know Coach Sark even alluded to it after their game,
- 1:42Speaker 3: checked them into two runs.
- 1:43Speaker 4: You can see that, and you can see.
- 1:45Speaker 3: That the power and confidence that creates for a quarterback
- 1:48Speaker 3: is huge. He throws the ball downfield very accurately, and
- 1:53Speaker 3: like I said, he makes people miss. I mean in
- 1:55Speaker 3: the pocket. He's hard to bring down. His pocket awareness
- 1:58Speaker 3: is really high. And then when you can throw overs
- 2:00Speaker 3: one eyed teams outside the field numbers as a quarterback
- 2:04Speaker 3: that's a complete eraser.
- 2:06Speaker 4: When you can throw the ball, and.
- 2:07Speaker 3: You have confidence throwing the ball outside the numbers of
- 2:10Speaker 3: the field and single eyed defense. That erases single eyed
- 2:13Speaker 3: defense for the most part. And he has a lot
- 2:15Speaker 3: of confidence in that, and they do a lot of
- 2:17Speaker 3: things to get the ball out there, which puts trust
- 2:19Speaker 3: in the defense.
- 2:20Speaker 4: So kudos to him.
- 2:21Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Sark wasn't asked about his running game because they had
- 2:23Speaker 1: some big runs in the outside zone there to do that. Obviously,
- 2:27Speaker 1: they had two to one hundred yard rushers in the game.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Gene Blue went for one hundred and forty six and
- 2:34Speaker 1: then quin Travian Weise number was held out precautionarily in
- 2:37Speaker 1: the second half, he still had one hundred and ten.
- 2:39Speaker 1: But they also add some short yardage gains or short
- 2:42Speaker 1: yardage attempts that were not gained what they wanted. And
- 2:46Speaker 1: Sark was asked if there were any trends that he
- 2:48Speaker 1: noticed when on those plays when it wound up being
- 2:54Speaker 1: stuffed instead of them getting to the line of the game.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Some bad planning, some bad execution, you know, without getting
- 2:59Speaker 3: in the particulars on which plays were, which you know
- 3:03Speaker 3: there was probably could have planned it a little better
- 3:06Speaker 3: and we definitely could have been a couple of instances
- 3:08Speaker 3: executed better, So you know, I hated that because I
- 3:13Speaker 3: think a couple of those could have really changed the.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Momentum in the game.
- 3:16Speaker 3: The one was after a turnover and you know, we
- 3:19Speaker 3: had an opportunity to go up twenty eight to seven.
- 3:21Speaker 4: We didn't capitalize on that.
- 3:23Speaker 3: And then the other one there we had a you know,
- 3:25Speaker 3: we're I think it was third and goal from the two,
- 3:28Speaker 3: and uh, we lose a couple of yards and we
- 3:30Speaker 3: settle for the field goal, which we got three points.
- 3:33Speaker 3: But those two probably those two instants stand out to
- 3:36Speaker 3: me the most.
- 3:37Speaker 4: But I think it was a combination of things.
- 3:39Speaker 2: All right.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Then, uh, Sark was asked about his the way he
- 3:44Speaker 1: has scheduled this week that they had a standard Sunday
- 3:47Speaker 1: with meet Today they had a practice regular Monday practice day.
- 3:52Speaker 1: But he does plan to give the players tomorrow and
- 3:55Speaker 1: Christmas off, two days off to spendwid family and then
- 3:59Speaker 1: come back on the two, twenty six. So we was
- 4:01Speaker 1: asked about how important it was for them to work
- 4:04Speaker 1: that out for his guys to be able to take
- 4:05Speaker 1: a break for the holiday.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I do think it's important. You know, this has it's
- 4:09Speaker 3: been a it's been a long grind for us.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Uh.
- 4:11Speaker 3: We started August thirty first, went all the way through
- 4:16Speaker 3: the SEC championship there and and had a couple of
- 4:20Speaker 3: weeks and we took a few days before the Clemson
- 4:23Speaker 3: game that that first week to get ready for Clemson.
- 4:26Speaker 3: We felt like the formula worked pretty good. We felt fresh,
- 4:28Speaker 3: we felt fast, we felt felt physical.
- 4:30Speaker 4: I thought the.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Guys had a good grasp of the game plan. And
- 4:33Speaker 3: so coming out of this week's game, you know, coming
- 4:36Speaker 3: back to work Sunday Monday, and then given everybody a
- 4:40Speaker 3: couple of days for Christmas felt like the right thing
- 4:42Speaker 3: to do. We'll get them back to everybody back to
- 4:45Speaker 3: twenty six and.
- 4:46Speaker 4: We'll go to work.
- 4:48Speaker 3: You know that part of that is, you know, we're
- 4:50Speaker 3: in year four and uh, this is you know, year two,
- 4:54Speaker 3: back to back years of being in the College Football Playoff.
- 4:56Speaker 4: I think we've got people in.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Our organization, uh, and players on a team who came
- 5:01Speaker 3: here for reasons that that this is part of the
- 5:04Speaker 3: reason why they came, you know, was to was to
- 5:06Speaker 3: be in these moments. And so if I can't trust
- 5:09Speaker 3: them now, then way can I trust him? You know,
- 5:11Speaker 3: we're there's eight teams left, right and we're one of
- 5:14Speaker 3: the eight.
- 5:15Speaker 4: And if I can't.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Trust our guys for a couple of days to go
- 5:17Speaker 3: home and drink eggnog with their mom, then then when
- 5:19Speaker 3: am I gonna trust them? So well, uh, they'll be
- 5:22Speaker 3: ready to go in.
- 5:23Speaker 2: The twenty sixth quick show of hands out there. How
- 5:25Speaker 2: many people like eggnog? Yeah, I know, I know there's
- 5:27Speaker 2: probably a lot of people. Ronald do you even like?
- 5:30Speaker 2: Ronald does not like eg knock. I'm one of those
- 5:33Speaker 2: weird people.
- 5:34Speaker 1: I do like it, and I and and I know
- 5:36Speaker 1: a lot of people like it if it's got a
- 5:38Speaker 1: little kick to it, like some bourbon in it, or
- 5:41Speaker 1: some Scotch in it or something like that.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I don't mind that. I'm not a bourbon drinker, by
- 5:45Speaker 2: the way. I'm I do prefer Scotch.
- 5:47Speaker 1: But but if I I look at that as being
- 5:51Speaker 1: a perfect a waste of a perfectly good Scotch is
- 5:54Speaker 1: to pour it in an eggnock, I like agnog is
- 5:57Speaker 1: a standalone beverage, and just drink the egg nog. And
- 6:00Speaker 1: then if you're gonna drink Scotts, you drink the scotch.
- 6:02Speaker 1: But that's just me, all right. Dillingham was asked about
- 6:07Speaker 1: the Texas defense and forcing turnovers, because one thing that
- 6:12Speaker 1: really that Arizona State really does a good job of
- 6:14Speaker 1: and has carried him to this point in the season
- 6:16Speaker 1: and winning the Big Twelve and all that sort of stuff.
- 6:18Speaker 1: One thing they like they stay away from turnovers, really
- 6:21Speaker 1: good turnover ratio. So what is it that Dillingham notices
- 6:25Speaker 1: about the Texas defense which has been so good at
- 6:28Speaker 1: forcing turnovers that gives him pause.
- 6:30Speaker 4: Yeah, it all starts with pass rush.
- 6:33Speaker 3: They get pass rush, they get tip balls, their defensive
- 6:36Speaker 3: line gets in throwing windows, and then they're back end.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Obviously the versatility.
- 6:41Speaker 3: They'll drop eight, they'll rush four, they'll rush five, they'll
- 6:45Speaker 3: mix it up a little bit.
- 6:46Speaker 4: And then the corners are sticky. I mean they're sticky players.
- 6:48Speaker 3: There's not much space, there's really I mean, it sounds
- 6:52Speaker 3: like a boring answer, but they're good, they're coached well,
- 6:57Speaker 3: and when the balls their hands, they catch it.
- 7:00Speaker 4: And then the pass rush. Like I said, everything starts
- 7:02Speaker 4: with impacting the quarterback.
- 7:03Speaker 3: When you talk about turnovers, and they impact a quarterback
- 7:07Speaker 3: enough and they get enough tip balls to create some
- 7:10Speaker 3: like bonus turnovers I would call them, which are the
- 7:13Speaker 3: tip ball turnovers. Those are like additionals. So yeah, they're
- 7:16Speaker 3: just well coached or where they're supposed to be. They're talented,
- 7:21Speaker 3: and then those guys play hard, so they're around the
- 7:22Speaker 3: football and that's a good combination to create takeaways.
- 7:25Speaker 2: All right, a couple more things, one from each head coach.
- 7:27Speaker 1: First of all, from Sark, this is about the confidence
- 7:31Speaker 1: level and how much confidence does Sark have in his
- 7:34Speaker 1: football team at this.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Late stage of the season.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Well, I'm definitely proud of our guys.
- 7:39Speaker 3: You know, like I said, it's been a long season,
- 7:43Speaker 3: and you know, having gone to the College Football Playoff
- 7:48Speaker 3: a year ago and literally being inches away from playing
- 7:52Speaker 3: from a national championship, and knowing what the goals were
- 7:57Speaker 3: coming into this season, and to be back in the
- 7:59Speaker 3: College Fotball Playoff when four of us were in the
- 8:02Speaker 3: CFPA year ago, but we were the only team that
- 8:05Speaker 3: made it back into the College Football Playoff in an
- 8:07Speaker 3: expanded version of twelve teams.
- 8:09Speaker 4: There's a lot to be proud of.
- 8:10Speaker 3: But mostly I'm proud of our veterans, our leaders, our
- 8:13Speaker 3: seniors because those guys went through five and seven in
- 8:15Speaker 3: year one, you know, they went through eight and five
- 8:17Speaker 3: and year two, and they didn't jump ship. They hung
- 8:21Speaker 3: in there with us. They believe in what we were
- 8:23Speaker 3: doing going into last year and they not finish it
- 8:28Speaker 3: the way we would have liked. And then to get
- 8:30Speaker 3: back again this year, I just think, like I said,
- 8:32Speaker 3: it's a credit to the leadership on our team, this
- 8:36Speaker 3: is a heck of a challenge. You don't like you're
- 8:39Speaker 3: not a conference championship team, especially in the Big Twelve.
- 8:42Speaker 3: I want to remind everybody, like we were in that
- 8:45Speaker 3: Big Twelve, what twenty seven years we won four? Okay,
- 8:48Speaker 3: this is their first year in and they won a
- 8:50Speaker 3: Big Twelve championship, Like it's a really hard thing to do.
- 8:53Speaker 3: They're playing with a ton of confidence right now. The
- 8:55Speaker 3: last two months. I think they're playing as good as
- 8:57Speaker 3: football as anybody in the country. And that's a credit
- 8:59Speaker 3: to Dillingham and their staff and building their team as
- 9:03Speaker 3: they've gotten better and better as years gone on. And
- 9:05Speaker 3: it's clear as day to see when you wash the tape.
- 9:07Speaker 3: So this is a heck of a challenge for us.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Okay, all right, So there it is the comments from
- 9:11Speaker 1: Sarkim from Kenny Dillingham. We have a few final comments
- 9:15Speaker 1: to get to before we have the Christmas break, so
- 9:19Speaker 1: we'll get to that coming up when we continue on
- 9:21Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
