- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eat your podcast, coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: bug bitten, and in my case, underwear. Listening to Hunt
- 0:16Speaker 1: e podcast, you can't predict anything presented by First Light,
- 0:22Speaker 1: creating proven versatile hunting apparel from Marino bass layers to
- 0:26Speaker 1: technical outerwear for every hunt first Light Go farther, stay longer, Phil,
- 0:35Speaker 1: We're going to see you. Are you okay? You're coming
- 0:37Speaker 1: to turn the podcast? Turn the podcast on? Alright? First six?
- 0:44Speaker 1: First here Phil? Uh, this morning, my wife was buying
- 0:50Speaker 1: tickets for the whole family black panther to know, Oh,
- 0:55Speaker 1: for the whole family to go see you in Uh,
- 1:00Speaker 1: what's it called Christmas Carol? Christmas Carol? Yeah, Evan, he's
- 1:03Speaker 1: a Scrooge. Well I'm not Scrooge, but he's in the play.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Yet it's great. What is you? Who are you in? There?
- 1:10Speaker 1: A couple of guys play a guy who takes out
- 1:12Speaker 1: a predatory loan with Scrooge, gets really really screwed over,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and then a guy who remember I don't remember that part. Yeah,
- 1:20Speaker 1: it's it's it's in the book. I don't think it's
- 1:22Speaker 1: in like any of the movies. You're seeing the Muppets
- 1:23Speaker 1: version Michael, where he forgets to act a lot of
- 1:26Speaker 1: the times, like the Mumps will start singing and he forgets.
- 1:31Speaker 1: He looks like he's lost. He seems so baffled by
- 1:34Speaker 1: these puppets around him singing. Yeah, he like totally stops
- 1:36Speaker 1: acting for whole songs. Yeah, it's charming. I love it.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I didn't like that. So you can play that. Then
- 1:42Speaker 1: you come back out and do what. Now, the ghost
- 1:45Speaker 1: of Christmas future comes. I'm not the ghost, but he
- 1:49Speaker 1: comes and shows like what's going to happen to Scrooge
- 1:51Speaker 1: after he dies? And I'm robbing his house, I'm cleaning
- 1:54Speaker 1: cleaning it out. Yeah, that's great. Yeah, it should be fun.
- 1:57Speaker 1: So when I'm there how many minutes? Well, I be
- 2:00Speaker 1: how many? How many minutes when I'll be able to
- 2:02Speaker 1: like have a chance to yell or heckle or anything.
- 2:04Speaker 1: When you're on there, up there, Oh you'll be up
- 2:08Speaker 1: there fifty or twenty minutes, maybe, I think. So I'm
- 2:11Speaker 1: doing other stuff. Yeah, I'm on stage. Um my little
- 2:15Speaker 1: boy's gonna price sleep. That's fine. I fully expected I
- 2:18Speaker 1: expect you to sleep as well, which is also I'll
- 2:20Speaker 1: be rivet. That's one of my favorite stories. Man, that's good.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I like it. I'm excited you're coming, also terrified. I
- 2:27Speaker 1: saw a thing one time where it was like Christmas
- 2:30Speaker 1: Carol Part two and everybody took horrible advantage of him.
- 2:35Speaker 1: This was not like a Dickens story though, just like yeah,
- 2:39Speaker 1: like later, and everybody would like manipulate him and tell
- 2:44Speaker 1: him lies and sobs stories and con them out of
- 2:47Speaker 1: his money and take advantage of his generosity. So scrooges
- 2:50Speaker 1: the victim in this sequel comes a victim. Yeah, this
- 2:53Speaker 1: sounds bad. I can't remember what I was looking at.
- 2:55Speaker 1: What what makes the Christmas Carol one of your favorite stories? Uh? Well,
- 3:01Speaker 1: I imagine it being in the same vein as Jimmy
- 3:04Speaker 1: Stewart in UM It's a Wonderful Life, which is a
- 3:07Speaker 1: great story if you like the story of the making
- 3:09Speaker 1: of UM. I don't know if you know, but that
- 3:12Speaker 1: production company went bankrupt. It was a huge flop. UM
- 3:17Speaker 1: Kappa had been a World War Two veteran came home.
- 3:21Speaker 1: UM wanted like desperately to do something positive. They put
- 3:25Speaker 1: all their money into it. Everything was horrible, and then
- 3:29Speaker 1: the ultimate redemption of it being UM, no one went
- 3:32Speaker 1: to it. It was panned by critics, oddly and then
- 3:36Speaker 1: now it's an American ritual to watch it every year.
- 3:40Speaker 1: But the idea of being able to see your life
- 3:43Speaker 1: when you're not around it is kind of an eye
- 3:46Speaker 1: opening story. Yeah, so like seeing your life and one
- 3:51Speaker 1: Jimmy Stewart sees the world without him around and it's horrible. Um,
- 3:56Speaker 1: Scrooge has a face with you know, the life of
- 3:59Speaker 1: him not around and yeah, just fine. Yeah, I like
- 4:05Speaker 1: that ship man. That's good. Um, I'm excited to go
- 4:09Speaker 1: see you. Phil good. You would never lie to me, Steve.
- 4:13Speaker 1: How often do you practice every every weekday now on Saturdays? Yeah,
- 4:18Speaker 1: it's getting up that final stretch. You put a lot
- 4:21Speaker 1: into it. Yeah, that's a cool. A lot of time.
- 4:23Speaker 1: He's a song and dance man keeps me off the xbox.
- 4:28Speaker 1: How do you rehearse being a robber? You just like, oh,
- 4:32Speaker 1: it's so much fun. Look, so I get to kind
- 4:34Speaker 1: of ham it up for that scene, Like I put
- 4:35Speaker 1: on my like Dick Van Dyke Cockney accent and really
- 4:38Speaker 1: really go go next. How does that Cockney accent sound?
- 4:41Speaker 1: You'll have to go see the play. Come on, But listening,
- 4:45Speaker 1: why are you talking? Who are you talking to while
- 4:46Speaker 1: you robbed? Like I I picture robbers being more discreet. Oh,
- 4:50Speaker 1: I'm with my my, my buddy. We're robbing it together, ran.
- 4:53Speaker 1: So yeah, we're having a little dialog. Yeah that's great. Yeah,
- 4:56Speaker 1: I'm excited. It's fun. Um join to us about Garrett Long.
- 5:02Speaker 1: What's up, dude? There you go. I'm coming down from
- 5:06Speaker 1: a high high. So I'm just like in this very
- 5:08Speaker 1: mellow state right now. No, I told Johnnie you'll be chill.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Why did you have to tell Johnnie that? Because he's
- 5:13Speaker 1: talking about coming down? He said, how crowded is? Its crowded?
- 5:18Speaker 1: But my name came up and he said I'd be chill, didn't.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I don't think if you guys this guy like me
- 5:24Speaker 1: like just talking about stupid ship all the time. You're like,
- 5:27Speaker 1: you know, getn't there when you need to get in
- 5:29Speaker 1: there and get done. Yeah, I like in this self
- 5:31Speaker 1: reflection phase, self reflection, Are you gonna tell us about
- 5:36Speaker 1: this high of all highs? Will? Yeah? Crin's here song
- 5:41Speaker 1: dance Phil j honest is here, has no idea what
- 5:43Speaker 1: we're here to talk about today. He's gonna be in
- 5:45Speaker 1: an interviewer role. That's not true. Yeah, I rushed down here. No,
- 5:50Speaker 1: you know we're talking about but you're gonna be you
- 5:51Speaker 1: don't know the aunts like you're the only one who
- 5:53Speaker 1: doesn't know correct no, no, no, correct um seth Morris howdy.
- 5:59Speaker 1: And then we have industry over there. I've been on
- 6:05Speaker 1: the show Trivia Player. Corey used to be the guy
- 6:08Speaker 1: that when you wrote an email in, that was your guy.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Yeah not anymore. Yeah easy now talked to a lot
- 6:16Speaker 1: of great people. You were always good about sending me
- 6:19Speaker 1: the interesting emails. Yeah. Well we're saying on on the
- 6:22Speaker 1: show when we say, like, uh, you know, a guy
- 6:24Speaker 1: wrote in and then we tell something that happened to him.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Corey used to vet all that. Yeah, a lot of
- 6:31Speaker 1: a lot of folks didn't make the cut. Gatekeeper Corey
- 6:35Speaker 1: makes me wonder what didn't make the cut that I
- 6:37Speaker 1: should have known about? Not great stuff? Do you think so? Yeah,
- 6:41Speaker 1: but we appreciate everybody writing in. We had a guy
- 6:44Speaker 1: right in recently, No, he we had a guy write
- 6:46Speaker 1: a great story and recently where he got caught stealing
- 6:48Speaker 1: a tree stand and wrote us in about it. He
- 6:52Speaker 1: got caught, The guy got the guy he stole tree stand,
- 6:54Speaker 1: got caught and wrote us a letter. No, he didn't
- 6:56Speaker 1: steal it. Kind of just go listen to the epis.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I was there, Yeah, yeah, I got mad that he
- 7:06Speaker 1: was surfing ship, not that he took a stand. Wow,
- 7:09Speaker 1: what a story. Did he have an accent like Phil? Oh?
- 7:13Speaker 1: We didn't. I couldn't tell. M hmm, okay, we gotta
- 7:18Speaker 1: do a couple of things. If you listen to Col's
- 7:21Speaker 1: weekend Review, you've been getting a weekly synopsis of what
- 7:24Speaker 1: are going What is going on with UM? An important
- 7:28Speaker 1: piece of legislation that sitting in Washington, d c. Right
- 7:30Speaker 1: now called RAWA Recovering America's Wildlife Act. We're gonna get
- 7:36Speaker 1: a lesson on UM. It passed the House, so you
- 7:43Speaker 1: know we have our like bifurcated legislature where we have
- 7:47Speaker 1: how many how many Congressmen? Almost four hundred? Right, maybe
- 7:51Speaker 1: more than four hundred, not the personal any congress. Don't
- 7:54Speaker 1: look at anybody. Look how close to right I was?
- 8:00Speaker 1: What is it? It changes all the time? Last like
- 8:05Speaker 1: just Montana's added a seat changes all damn time. It's
- 8:07Speaker 1: a moving number. Let me tell you what never changes.
- 8:11Speaker 1: The number of senators is fixed at one each state.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Having to you all can do a quick civics lesson
- 8:17Speaker 1: for Americans younger, younger, folks older. If you don't know, okay, seth,
- 8:24Speaker 1: explain to me your young Explain to me how and why?
- 8:29Speaker 1: How and why do we have a bifurcated legislature. And
- 8:33Speaker 1: what is the difference between the House and Senate. I
- 8:35Speaker 1: thought you were giving a lesson if I'm trying to see,
- 8:39Speaker 1: I'm trying person that needs that lesson. Uh So to
- 8:45Speaker 1: give an equal equal balance. Um, something you get your congressmen,
- 8:49Speaker 1: is you get those are rewarded on population. Okay, um?
- 8:55Speaker 1: And then every state gets two senators. One might look
- 8:59Speaker 1: and be, well, how would a state like I don't
- 9:01Speaker 1: mean to pick out Wyoming. Here, you have a state
- 9:04Speaker 1: with six people and they sent two senators to d C.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And then you have a state. How many people are
- 9:13Speaker 1: in California over thirteen million? Is that why Montange just
- 9:18Speaker 1: got a senator? Because our population is going no, No,
- 9:25Speaker 1: one was thirty nine point to four million. Okay, So
- 9:29Speaker 1: do this. Divide that number by two and divide Wyoming's
- 9:34Speaker 1: population by two, and notice how skewed it is how
- 9:42Speaker 1: much senatorial representation you get in Wyoming. So let's say
- 9:48Speaker 1: that half of California's population is twenty million in Wyoming's
- 9:52Speaker 1: population in one was five hundred, So divide that by
- 9:59Speaker 1: two three thousand. Roughly one million Californians get a Senator
- 10:06Speaker 1: and hundred thousand Wyoming wyomings. Here's about here's the really
- 10:13Speaker 1: cool thing about being in Wyoming. How many of those
- 10:17Speaker 1: people are legal? So pull out the pull out everyone
- 10:20Speaker 1: under eighteen. You now shrunk the number way down. Pull
- 10:25Speaker 1: out who actually votes. It's like a very small number
- 10:30Speaker 1: of individuals sends a person to the Senate in Wyoming,
- 10:37Speaker 1: and meanwhile in California they gotta split the same number,
- 10:41Speaker 1: but then they get a shipload of representation in Congress,
- 10:46Speaker 1: which is doled out by I'm assuming Wyoming has a congressman. Yeah,
- 10:49Speaker 1: they would have a congressman. California has a fifty something right. Yeah,
- 10:53Speaker 1: there you go, Seth. That make you feel proud to
- 10:56Speaker 1: be an American that they thought all this through. So
- 11:00Speaker 1: um Rawa back to RABA passed the House and everybody
- 11:07Speaker 1: loves it. Um all you know, wildlife people all like it.
- 11:10Speaker 1: They all worked on it, and it'll pass the Senate
- 11:12Speaker 1: if it votes. But they just don't vote. And we're
- 11:16Speaker 1: gonna learn about what rawa is, why it isn't getting
- 11:23Speaker 1: across the finish line and what it would take to
- 11:24Speaker 1: get across the finish line? From um. Senator Martin Heinrich
- 11:29Speaker 1: from New Mexico. Who's been, who's joined us on the
- 11:30Speaker 1: show before, so he'll be joining us right now, all right,
- 11:35Speaker 1: Senator Martin Heinrich from New Mexico. Layout layout for us
- 11:41Speaker 1: real quick, remind everybody what is rawa rawa? How do
- 11:46Speaker 1: you guys? What do you like to say? Yeah? I
- 11:48Speaker 1: usually call it raka? What is raba and what exactly
- 11:52Speaker 1: is the problem? So ra is the recovery in America's
- 11:57Speaker 1: Wildlife Act, and it really creates a mechanism for being
- 12:05Speaker 1: able to conserve species um all the various species of
- 12:10Speaker 1: wildlife that people care about before they get into an
- 12:14Speaker 1: emergency room kind of situation. If you think about like
- 12:18Speaker 1: the Endangered Species Act, if if a species ends up
- 12:22Speaker 1: on the Endangered Species list, there are already so far
- 12:26Speaker 1: gone that it's incredibly expensive then really difficult to bring
- 12:31Speaker 1: them back from the brink. And this shines a spotlight
- 12:34Speaker 1: on all those species that that are nowhere close to
- 12:38Speaker 1: being listed but are in decline and gives us a
- 12:41Speaker 1: tool to be able to recover them and maintain healthy populations.
- 12:46Speaker 1: And who who was on the who's on the hook
- 12:50Speaker 1: for it? Financially? You know, what is the money? Where
- 12:53Speaker 1: does the money come from? That has always been sort
- 12:56Speaker 1: of the rug with this legislation. Uh, And we're in
- 13:00Speaker 1: the midst of negotiating that literally as we speak, and
- 13:04Speaker 1: I think we're getting close to being able to announce
- 13:08Speaker 1: a way to raise the money in a way that
- 13:11Speaker 1: doesn't increase the deficit and has both Republican and Democratic support.
- 13:16Speaker 1: What is the how long has it been ready to
- 13:21Speaker 1: vote on or when you say that you're literally that
- 13:24Speaker 1: you're working on it as we speak, Do you mean
- 13:26Speaker 1: you're that they're they're finally drafting the final bit of
- 13:31Speaker 1: the legislation or what the main portion of the policy
- 13:35Speaker 1: has already passed the House and it's also pass the
- 13:39Speaker 1: relevant committee in the Senate. UM. So we're very close
- 13:42Speaker 1: to being able to get this done. Um most likely
- 13:46Speaker 1: because there's not a lot of time left in this Congress.
- 13:49Speaker 1: It would be included in the end of year spending package.
- 13:54Speaker 1: What were the tell people how it went when in
- 13:57Speaker 1: the House? You know, I mean when you factor in
- 13:59Speaker 1: total Republican support, Democrats support, we've had really strong Republican
- 14:05Speaker 1: support for this legislation. It's been vary bipartisan because it
- 14:09Speaker 1: was literally drafted from the ground up with the input
- 14:13Speaker 1: of the state wildlife agencies. They're the groups that would
- 14:17Speaker 1: implement this legislation. And if you look, if you're looking
- 14:21Speaker 1: for something that is like government that is popular, look
- 14:26Speaker 1: at your state game and phish agencies and so all
- 14:29Speaker 1: of them have a plan in place called the State
- 14:31Speaker 1: Wildlife Action Plan with a bunch of species that they
- 14:35Speaker 1: just don't have the money to work on um and
- 14:38Speaker 1: this bill would really change that dramatically. How does it
- 14:42Speaker 1: happen in d C. When there's a there's a bill
- 14:47Speaker 1: that has bipartisan support and there's really no doubt that
- 14:52Speaker 1: if it came to a vote that it would pass.
- 14:55Speaker 1: How does it come to be that you just can't
- 14:57Speaker 1: get it up for vote. There's a couple of and
- 15:00Speaker 1: eamics at play. One is just a lack of time.
- 15:03Speaker 1: If you if you watch the Senate at this point,
- 15:06Speaker 1: you'll see things constantly filibustered, and it only takes one
- 15:11Speaker 1: person to really gum up the works. So you can
- 15:14Speaker 1: have something that has well over sixty votes, as RABA does,
- 15:19Speaker 1: and still not be able to get it on the
- 15:21Speaker 1: floor and get it past Give me. Is there only
- 15:27Speaker 1: one argument against it or is there an argument against
- 15:31Speaker 1: it coming from each side? Now? I think I think
- 15:35Speaker 1: this is this has been worked on for so long,
- 15:37Speaker 1: and it's so bipartisan that I mean, there are there
- 15:41Speaker 1: are always a handful of people that will find a
- 15:43Speaker 1: reason not to do something. But I think what is
- 15:47Speaker 1: really attracted by partisan support about this legislation is if
- 15:51Speaker 1: you wait until some species is on the endangered species list.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Let's take the monarch butterfly as a great example. It's
- 15:58Speaker 1: the monarch where to get listed to morrow, the compliance
- 16:02Speaker 1: costs for agriculture all across the Midwest would be in
- 16:06Speaker 1: the tens of billions. And we have a tool here
- 16:09Speaker 1: where you can you know, if if the Endangered Species
- 16:12Speaker 1: Act is like the emergency room, this is like primary care.
- 16:16Speaker 1: This is spending a small amount of money early in
- 16:19Speaker 1: the process to really maintain the wildlife that does so
- 16:23Speaker 1: much for our economy. Yeah, and then also it gets it,
- 16:29Speaker 1: you know, taking care of the problem before it's too
- 16:31Speaker 1: late helps you avoid the inevitable blood bath that happens
- 16:36Speaker 1: when people really have to start sacrificing on behalf of
- 16:39Speaker 1: something that's really imperiled. I mean, that's when things get
- 16:44Speaker 1: ugly right now. If you look at some of the
- 16:47Speaker 1: endangered species battles we've had, we can avoid those and
- 16:51Speaker 1: make sure that we're avoiding um, both the political battle
- 16:55Speaker 1: and the compliance costs that come with trying to break
- 16:59Speaker 1: bring something back from the very brink of extinction. So, uh,
- 17:03Speaker 1: when when you I spoke about this the other day,
- 17:05Speaker 1: you brought up that you know, we've had our um,
- 17:08Speaker 1: we've had midterm elections. It creates turnover, new people coming
- 17:14Speaker 1: in priority shifts. You feel that to get this across
- 17:18Speaker 1: the finish line, you feel a sense of urgency. Absolutely.
- 17:22Speaker 1: I think this is an important window and we have
- 17:26Speaker 1: you know, we have our ducks in a row right now.
- 17:29Speaker 1: It would be a terrible missed opportunity if we can't
- 17:33Speaker 1: get this across the finish line. And I can tell
- 17:36Speaker 1: you know, John Dingle, one of the great uh sort
- 17:40Speaker 1: of conservation heroes of the House of Representatives, tried to
- 17:44Speaker 1: pass very similar legislation multiple times and and came very close.
- 17:50Speaker 1: People have been working on this problem for fifty years.
- 17:53Speaker 1: We've got an opening right now, and we need to
- 17:55Speaker 1: take advantage of it. So what what do you recommend
- 17:58Speaker 1: to to listeners who care about wildlife. I want to
- 18:03Speaker 1: see these problems addressed early before they become emergencies that
- 18:06Speaker 1: are incredibly divisive and expensive. Uh what what do people
- 18:11Speaker 1: do to get it that that you guys, get it
- 18:14Speaker 1: in front of you and vote on it before the
- 18:17Speaker 1: end of the year. I would really recommend people reach
- 18:21Speaker 1: out to their member of Congress and both of their
- 18:23Speaker 1: senators and say that this is something that's important. And
- 18:27Speaker 1: given the breadth of support for this, I mean, all
- 18:29Speaker 1: the state agencies support this. You have all of the
- 18:34Speaker 1: conservation at hunting groups from the UM, the National Wildlife
- 18:38Speaker 1: Foundation to t RCP, to pheasants forever you name it.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Go to their websites. Most of them have some sort
- 18:45Speaker 1: of alert on their side about how to engage your
- 18:48Speaker 1: member of Congress and your senators and say this is important.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Let's get this done now. All right, man, we'll get
- 18:54Speaker 1: people on it. And Uh, I appreciate you taking the
- 18:57Speaker 1: time to come and talk to us. Oh, it's my pleasure.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Keep up the great work, all right, everybody that's a senator.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Martin Heinrich from New Mexico, UM friend of the show
- 19:07Speaker 1: been on a handful of times, Big Hunter, Big Fisherman.
- 19:11Speaker 1: He does all the stuff he's supposed to do, Um,
- 19:14Speaker 1: and while he's doing that, he really just keeps his
- 19:17Speaker 1: eyes peeled on access issues, things that affect hunters and anglers.
- 19:21Speaker 1: He is a friend of outdoorsman, Um Martin. Thanks for
- 19:27Speaker 1: coming on man, Best luck to you. Always a pleasure, Steve, alright,
- 19:31Speaker 1: take care, al right, Everyboddy. This this is this is
- 19:35Speaker 1: one of our special hunt recap issues and episodes. And
- 19:39Speaker 1: the reason this episode is special and you really ought
- 19:41Speaker 1: to listen because it is what I think is the
- 19:43Speaker 1: most politically Is this fair to say in terms of
- 19:49Speaker 1: elk hunts, is the most politically convoluted, contentious, weird little
- 19:55Speaker 1: elk hunt in America America's weirdest little elk hunt. The
- 20:01Speaker 1: podcast would be a great title for the podcast. If
- 20:03Speaker 1: I was just a dude at home and I was
- 20:04Speaker 1: thinking about what listened to and I saw that pop
- 20:06Speaker 1: up some bitch, I'd be listening in. Yeah, it sounds
- 20:09Speaker 1: kind of like the what's the Reno America's best little
- 20:13Speaker 1: horhouse close? I'm talking about what is that movie? Ye? What?
- 20:19Speaker 1: I was thinking that what wasn't Reno has a catchphrase
- 20:21Speaker 1: that's sort of like America's favorite little big city or something. Yeah,
- 20:24Speaker 1: but help me out, Delly parton. Isn't a isn't a movie? Right,
- 20:30Speaker 1: that's it's an a music something about a favorite little horhouse. Yeah,
- 20:34Speaker 1: best little horrhouse in Texas. Yeah, something like that. I
- 20:37Speaker 1: never saw that one. Not familiar good family movie for tonight. Um,
- 20:43Speaker 1: what was it? Was the weirdest little elk count in America? Yeah, Okay,
- 20:48Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about that. We're gonna talk about actual
- 20:50Speaker 1: l COHNT. But first I want to lay I want
- 20:52Speaker 1: to lay out why, um, what makes this the weirdest
- 20:57Speaker 1: little elk hunt in America? Okay, Yanni, I'm listening. And
- 21:00Speaker 1: then and then you can you can ask about like
- 21:04Speaker 1: there will come a point where you'd be like, so
- 21:05Speaker 1: what was the elk cunning? Like, Yeah, I've heard a
- 21:08Speaker 1: lot about this elk hunt ever since I moved here.
- 21:11Speaker 1: I know several people that have hunted it, including Garrett.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Prior to this one, his grandpa, his great grandpa. Grandpa
- 21:19Speaker 1: Garrett pretty much guided him though Grandpa Garrett described his
- 21:24Speaker 1: grandpa to me, Okay, I wish I remember the sentence
- 21:27Speaker 1: exactly a lifelong public land cow elk killer. Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:33Speaker 1: The first twenty five points we saw up there, it
- 21:36Speaker 1: was like, should I shoot him, Grandpa, No, it's gonna
- 21:39Speaker 1: have six on each side at least. Yeah, he said
- 21:42Speaker 1: it was hard for him to get used to the
- 21:44Speaker 1: idea of passing up and elk man. He's like, his brow,
- 21:47Speaker 1: time's long enough on that bowl. I'm like, god, dang, Yeah,
- 21:51Speaker 1: it is a coveted tag. Well, I'll tell you. You
- 21:53Speaker 1: wanna know how coveted. Let's go um roll up stats.
- 21:58Speaker 1: I first, I'm gonna roll out what it is. So
- 22:00Speaker 1: there's a thing called there's a there's a thing called
- 22:03Speaker 1: the Buffer Zone UM in Montana and it sits it's
- 22:06Speaker 1: it's it's fifty square miles and it kind of straddles
- 22:08Speaker 1: the northwest corner of Yelstone National Park. UM. Historically it
- 22:12Speaker 1: was like a general unit thing and you can hunt
- 22:15Speaker 1: right up to Yellastone Park border and they would now
- 22:18Speaker 1: and then have a little bit of a blood bath
- 22:19Speaker 1: over there where weather and such would really start forcing
- 22:24Speaker 1: elk out of the park. There was a couple of
- 22:26Speaker 1: places like this UM. There's one in Gardener They used
- 22:28Speaker 1: to call up the firing line was at the shooting line,
- 22:30Speaker 1: fire the firing line firing line, because things would just
- 22:34Speaker 1: hit a crescendo now and then like a crescendo of
- 22:37Speaker 1: elk killing would occur in these places. Um, they then
- 22:42Speaker 1: for a while closed this little portion of land to
- 22:47Speaker 1: give elk room to move out of the park, disperse
- 22:53Speaker 1: a little bit and go about various paths and not
- 22:56Speaker 1: be in such a funneled situation. So it'll be like
- 22:59Speaker 1: a man a funnel if you will imagine an hour glass. Okay,
- 23:06Speaker 1: the buffer zone is the neck on the hour glass.
- 23:11Speaker 1: The cone on one side is like the park portions
- 23:16Speaker 1: of the park. The cone on the other side is
- 23:18Speaker 1: national forests and ranch land you know, at large. And
- 23:22Speaker 1: that neck is just this place where a lot of
- 23:25Speaker 1: animals come through. And so they closed it to give
- 23:28Speaker 1: elk a chance to get out of there and go
- 23:30Speaker 1: about either hang tight in the neck of the funnel
- 23:33Speaker 1: or take various routes and spread. When when did they
- 23:36Speaker 1: close that? What was it? Krins? I told her to
- 23:40Speaker 1: find it out, sent a message I try to up.
- 23:42Speaker 1: It was nineteen eleven. Nineteen eleven, Yeah, is the where
- 23:45Speaker 1: the handgun name comes from. That long ago I had
- 23:52Speaker 1: no idea. Yeah, seriously, I thought it was in the
- 23:55Speaker 1: sixties and seventies. Now I did like real quick math
- 23:59Speaker 1: on that for some stats, there's been in there in
- 24:03Speaker 1: the last hundred and twelve years. Man, you should you
- 24:07Speaker 1: want to get a job produced in the podcast? Yeah?
- 24:11Speaker 1: Where's that on these notes? It's actually not in here,
- 24:15Speaker 1: that's all Later Garrett's little noodle, Damn Garrett, good job man.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Then well I got a little I got a little
- 24:23Speaker 1: factoid for you. When they first opened the buffer zone,
- 24:26Speaker 1: how many elk takes? For so decades went by, and
- 24:33Speaker 1: then eventually a region three biologists with Montana Fish, Wildlife
- 24:38Speaker 1: and Parks put some effort and work into creating the
- 24:42Speaker 1: buffer zone. Hunt and this gentleman, um, he's still alive.
- 24:47Speaker 1: I've emailed with him. This gentleman brought up, you know,
- 24:52Speaker 1: we got hundreds of elk coming through here and winnering
- 24:54Speaker 1: and whatnot. Is it really gonna hurt anything if a
- 24:56Speaker 1: few guys take a poke? Great question. And so they
- 25:01Speaker 1: started issuing some tags, and for long it was four
- 25:05Speaker 1: and then it became five this year. Has it ever
- 25:08Speaker 1: been more than five? I don't believe. So, I haven't
- 25:11Speaker 1: seen any mention. I know, and so they shut it
- 25:13Speaker 1: down in nineteen eleven. When did they reopen it? Not
- 25:16Speaker 1: just recently two three They started talking about in two
- 25:21Speaker 1: thousand three, but opening two thousand. This guy is just
- 25:26Speaker 1: like nobody likes to show off. That's great that you
- 25:28Speaker 1: think that when he dies, the gonna mount him and
- 25:30Speaker 1: hang that fishing game. Gart longs passed gar Long passed
- 25:36Speaker 1: nab Long Long Creek's amazing trail. Speaking of getting mounted
- 25:45Speaker 1: at fishing game, I don't want to give it to
- 25:46Speaker 1: the details because I don't know if this is true,
- 25:48Speaker 1: but I think this is true. There's a guy like
- 25:52Speaker 1: I'm sure it's true, but I know it's true because
- 25:55Speaker 1: I've even seen where it happened. I've seen it and
- 25:58Speaker 1: I've seen where it happened, and I had the whole
- 26:00Speaker 1: thing explained to me. There was a feller that has
- 26:04Speaker 1: a plane, his own private plane. One time he sees
- 26:07Speaker 1: a giant mule deer on a someone's ranch land. Do
- 26:13Speaker 1: you know the story? Just shaking my head because lands,
- 26:16Speaker 1: the plane kills the mule deer, gets in trouble. The
- 26:20Speaker 1: mule deer gets confiscated, and it hangs in a regional
- 26:24Speaker 1: It hangs in a regional fishing game headquarters. On occasion,
- 26:30Speaker 1: the gentleman who got it will still take his friends
- 26:32Speaker 1: down to show him there was there was another story.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Just that's the story I heard. He still was like,
- 26:42Speaker 1: let me take it down. Didn't we have another story?
- 26:49Speaker 1: You had another story just like that where someone got
- 26:51Speaker 1: busted and would take friends down to fishing game. That's it,
- 26:55Speaker 1: that's the one I never remember. The plane part. Yeah, yeah,
- 27:00Speaker 1: that's the story. Um so last year twelve is he
- 27:06Speaker 1: bringing out a couple of beers. I was like, yo, mine,
- 27:11Speaker 1: i gonna put some camp chairs and ship and I've
- 27:13Speaker 1: had like a little fake campfire I'd like to set.
- 27:16Speaker 1: His man cave has hours like, well, we gotta be
- 27:20Speaker 1: out here by five. Boy, thinking about having everybody over,
- 27:24Speaker 1: but it's at four o'clock on Monday, not at my house. Um.
- 27:32Speaker 1: The so the buffer zone, what year did it come in? Okay?
- 27:36Speaker 1: So it came in two thousand five. Um, and you
- 27:40Speaker 1: know people really want to hunt the buffer zone. They
- 27:44Speaker 1: had twelve thousand people applied for the buffer zone permit.
- 27:48Speaker 1: That was one five got it. So you might be like, well,
- 27:52Speaker 1: what astounding odds? And it is it's astounding odds. But
- 27:55Speaker 1: keep this little detail of mine. Um. We've explain bonus
- 28:00Speaker 1: points thousand times. I'll do a real quick rundown again. Oftentimes,
- 28:05Speaker 1: as in the case of the buffer zone, which is
- 28:07Speaker 1: an extreme version, the demand um for a specific hunt
- 28:13Speaker 1: um is greater than the supply. Right, So we all
- 28:16Speaker 1: know that if you live in pretty much anywhere in
- 28:20Speaker 1: America that has white tailed deer, Let's say you live
- 28:22Speaker 1: in um, New York State, anyone that anyone that legally
- 28:28Speaker 1: can't go down and buy a deer license, you just
- 28:30Speaker 1: go deer hunting. The amount of deer tag sold is
- 28:32Speaker 1: like has a lot to it. How many people wanted one?
- 28:34Speaker 1: There's no cap, there's never a point which they like,
- 28:37Speaker 1: you cannot have a deer take um. But you take
- 28:40Speaker 1: something like big horn sheep for instance. Hell, everybody like
- 28:42Speaker 1: to go hunt in big horn sheep with aren't that
- 28:44Speaker 1: many big horn sheeps. So you need to allocate the permits,
- 28:47Speaker 1: and they do it generally. There are notable exceptions, UM,
- 28:50Speaker 1: which we've covered in the past. Generally, it's a democratic
- 28:54Speaker 1: it's they're allocated democratically, meaning you have a lottery, you
- 28:57Speaker 1: have a raffle draw um, a lot of states were
- 29:01Speaker 1: reward return customers. So every year that if you throw
- 29:05Speaker 1: your hat in the ring and you you enter a
- 29:07Speaker 1: tag lottery and you don't win, you get what's called
- 29:10Speaker 1: a bonus point or a preference point. In Montana, UM,
- 29:15Speaker 1: they they square your preference points. So they used to
- 29:20Speaker 1: not do this. So if you had two points, your
- 29:21Speaker 1: names in the hat twice, if you have three points,
- 29:23Speaker 1: your names in the hat three times. Um, some years
- 29:27Speaker 1: element how long ago it was less than ten years ago,
- 29:31Speaker 1: they started to square your points. Meaning if you're going
- 29:33Speaker 1: in with I have never drawn a special Elk tag
- 29:38Speaker 1: in Montana in my life. I don't know how. I
- 29:39Speaker 1: had a shipload of bonus points. So your name might
- 29:41Speaker 1: be in the hat four hundred times if you've got
- 29:43Speaker 1: twenty bonus points, which is how long they've been doing
- 29:45Speaker 1: the bonus point system. Roughly, Um, you're going with twenty
- 29:48Speaker 1: bonus points is twenty times. Twenty people applied, but a
- 29:52Speaker 1: lot of them their names only and once, and some
- 29:55Speaker 1: of them their names in the hat four hundred times,
- 29:58Speaker 1: So it's not like that crazy, but it's still crazy
- 30:01Speaker 1: to draw it. Well, yeah, because you still have other
- 30:04Speaker 1: people in there that have their name in the four
- 30:06Speaker 1: hund Yeah, you're not the only one for sure. It's
- 30:08Speaker 1: to the point where people would when I drew it,
- 30:11Speaker 1: people would congratulate me as though I had a baby.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Oh yeah, they'd call you congratulations. I mean I felt
- 30:18Speaker 1: like we had a moment on the phone right when
- 30:20Speaker 1: you drew it and you called me. It was like
- 30:23Speaker 1: I think it was. I thought it was like I
- 30:25Speaker 1: thought they'd made a mistake. You're like refreshing it. Yeah,
- 30:28Speaker 1: oh yeah, I texted you when I found out. I
- 30:30Speaker 1: was pissed. Yeah that was your response. Garrett was happy
- 30:32Speaker 1: you were pissed. Yeah, really shows you know, different ways
- 30:35Speaker 1: you can go out through life. It's Christmas. I was
- 30:41Speaker 1: happy because he wanted it. Well, you know, some of
- 30:45Speaker 1: these coveted tags might need to be restricted to Montana
- 30:49Speaker 1: natives one of these things. That's a good idea, don't
- 30:55Speaker 1: you think that's a good idea, great idea. I could
- 30:58Speaker 1: get on board with that. But I was happy before
- 31:00Speaker 1: you right away. I was like, God it out of
- 31:02Speaker 1: state here. You know, I wouldn't even if that happened
- 31:05Speaker 1: on some things, that'd be like, yeah, whatever, that's fine,
- 31:07Speaker 1: I won't be pissed. Um, that's a good idea, especially
- 31:12Speaker 1: now that I did it. No, that got mine. Here's where,
- 31:15Speaker 1: Here's where the thing get Here's where the tag is tricky, contentious,
- 31:18Speaker 1: So there are certain access issues. Um, try to picture
- 31:25Speaker 1: in your mind, close your eyes, and picture in your
- 31:27Speaker 1: mind's eye that you have trying to think of how
- 31:32Speaker 1: you explain this Yellowston National Park where you're hunting. The
- 31:39Speaker 1: border of Yellowston National Park is a river. Okay, it's
- 31:44Speaker 1: the upper Galloton River. If you're facing we're gonna do
- 31:49Speaker 1: this where you're facing upstream looking into the park. So
- 31:52Speaker 1: you're you're fit, You're you're you're facing south, look king
- 32:00Speaker 1: upstream on the Galatain River into the park, and you're
- 32:05Speaker 1: on a highway. It just so happens that the highway
- 32:09Speaker 1: is not down the center of the river. The highways
- 32:12Speaker 1: off to the side of the river. Right. The highway
- 32:15Speaker 1: sits to the east of the river. But the park
- 32:19Speaker 1: border is the river. So you have a little strip
- 32:26Speaker 1: of ground between the edge of the highway in the
- 32:32Speaker 1: edge of the river because the highway parallels the river.
- 32:35Speaker 1: So picture this you have. It could be thirty yards
- 32:40Speaker 1: mm hmm, it could be two yards. Where you would
- 32:44Speaker 1: leave the road and need to is this. How clear
- 32:48Speaker 1: is this to someone who doesn't when I'm talking about No,
- 32:50Speaker 1: it's good. I got it, I got it. Okay, lay
- 32:53Speaker 1: your hand down flat, listeners, lay your hand down flat.
- 32:56Speaker 1: This is perfect. Lay your left hand down flat on
- 32:58Speaker 1: the ground. Unless you're driving. Then just look at your fingers. Okay, now,
- 33:02Speaker 1: never mind, okay, never mind your pinky and your thumb.
- 33:08Speaker 1: We're only focused on your three middle fingers, which are
- 33:10Speaker 1: laid flat on the ground on the table. Your index finger,
- 33:19Speaker 1: of your your yelso, National Park is off your fingernails,
- 33:24Speaker 1: your this is your left hand land flat. You don't
- 33:26Speaker 1: have a thumb and pinky. Your index finger is the highway.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Your middle finger is the upper Gallanton River. Your ring
- 33:42Speaker 1: finger is public land. You need to get from your
- 33:50Speaker 1: pointer finger to your ring finger right now. At a
- 33:57Speaker 1: time that was illegal m hm, because you couldn't have
- 34:02Speaker 1: a gun in the park. Right This is where the
- 34:07Speaker 1: story gets interested. I couldn't have a gun in the park.
- 34:10Speaker 1: I was shocked to hear what president signed the legislation
- 34:13Speaker 1: that made it that you could have a gun in
- 34:15Speaker 1: the park. It starts with the oh and ends in Obama.
- 34:32Speaker 1: People in the press were not happy. Corin't read that
- 34:35Speaker 1: line from that that headline you found her that that
- 34:37Speaker 1: line that lays out So once they made it that
- 34:40Speaker 1: you could cross through the park with guns, here's how
- 34:42Speaker 1: I was described in the newspaper article. Well, I mean
- 34:45Speaker 1: it's like it was all over mainstream media, right, so ABC, NBC,
- 34:50Speaker 1: I mean anywhere you guys get but give the new realities.
- 34:52Speaker 1: But um so which source this comes? Okay? So this
- 35:01Speaker 1: was just an ABC News article from February. Hikers in
- 35:07Speaker 1: the Grand Canyon, visitors to Old Faithful in anyone else
- 35:10Speaker 1: sleeping at hundreds of National park campsites across the country
- 35:14Speaker 1: might now be surrounded by other tourists carrying shotguns or rifles. Surrounded, surrounded.
- 35:21Speaker 1: This is like, thanks to a new law that took
- 35:32Speaker 1: effect today, they got us surrounded. Thanks to it is
- 35:35Speaker 1: now legal to carry loaded guns into our national parks.
- 35:39Speaker 1: So they did that, which made it now once you
- 35:44Speaker 1: could do this, you could now with a gun, cross
- 35:49Speaker 1: your middle finger back to the hand on the ground.
- 35:52Speaker 1: You could take a gun on the highway for wearing
- 35:55Speaker 1: Hunter's orange. And just as I can tell you for
- 35:57Speaker 1: personal experience, now this causes some constant asian with motorists
- 36:02Speaker 1: because they know they've just passed a huge sign that
- 36:04Speaker 1: says Yellowstone National Park and then lo and behold, what
- 36:08Speaker 1: do we have here? A bunch of rednecks wearing their
- 36:12Speaker 1: crazy ass orange clothes with guns look doing what looks
- 36:17Speaker 1: a hell of a lot like going hunting. And they
- 36:20Speaker 1: hit the brakes, they slow down and they look and
- 36:26Speaker 1: it is not a friendly look. It's a what and
- 36:30Speaker 1: Sam hill And they're like, I need to report this.
- 36:36Speaker 1: These people are blazing. People are blazing surrounding me. Did
- 36:43Speaker 1: it get reported on often? I don't know, but judging
- 36:46Speaker 1: by the part, let me continue my story because it
- 36:50Speaker 1: gets better. It gets better. What that left off, though,
- 36:54Speaker 1: was that left off archery equipment. So for a while
- 37:02Speaker 1: like no, okay, the the idea that you can cross
- 37:04Speaker 1: the park with a gun is no longer contested. The
- 37:06Speaker 1: Park Service don't like it. You can tell the park
- 37:10Speaker 1: rangers hate it. They don't like it none. But there's
- 37:14Speaker 1: nothing you can do about it. Some years ago, though,
- 37:17Speaker 1: they had to take on the issue of archery equipment.
- 37:20Speaker 1: And if you draw the buffer zone tag and you
- 37:22Speaker 1: get to calling around, you will not get a straight
- 37:26Speaker 1: answer from anyone about what the situation is with archery equipment.
- 37:30Speaker 1: It is very similar to if you happen to be
- 37:33Speaker 1: a hunter from Missouri and you wanted to go corner
- 37:36Speaker 1: crossing and Wyoming, and you talked to a lot of
- 37:38Speaker 1: different law enforcement people who all told you it was
- 37:41Speaker 1: okay up until you got arrested by one of them,
- 37:45Speaker 1: until you got arrested by the one that told you
- 37:48Speaker 1: was okay. Right. It's like, no one will give you
- 37:52Speaker 1: the straight answer on archer equipment. But where's the lock
- 37:55Speaker 1: ran that they had? What is the wording for the law?
- 37:58Speaker 1: I know by heart, I don't need If you just
- 38:00Speaker 1: pull up the year why I say it some years
- 38:03Speaker 1: ago for archery? Yep? What year do they address it
- 38:06Speaker 1: with archery? Because it's like a little weird. You can
- 38:11Speaker 1: have a gun there, but you can't have a bow
- 38:13Speaker 1: there or a cross boat. For a while, you it
- 38:16Speaker 1: was the way they were reading the rules. You had
- 38:18Speaker 1: to disassemble your boat. You couldn't have an assembled boat.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Then they made it no, Yeah, why are you yawning?
- 38:26Speaker 1: This is fascinating. What do they mean by disassembled? Assembled?
- 38:33Speaker 1: People think it means if it's a if it's a
- 38:35Speaker 1: stick boat, just take the string off. If it's a
- 38:37Speaker 1: compound boat. You gotta have a bow press to put
- 38:38Speaker 1: it back together once you crossed the park. Like, I
- 38:43Speaker 1: know the law, I know it now, but I'm more
- 38:45Speaker 1: I'm trying to paint the picture of how you cannot
- 38:47Speaker 1: get a straight answer. And I got a great story
- 38:49Speaker 1: from a guy that had to take a couple of
- 38:51Speaker 1: years ago. So what year was? They said you can
- 38:59Speaker 1: cross the ark with a unloaded And then I asked, like,
- 39:04Speaker 1: what does unloaded mean? It means you don't have an
- 39:05Speaker 1: arrow in it. Okay, not like just it's just like
- 39:07Speaker 1: you know, it's unloaded, there's not an arrow in it.
- 39:11Speaker 1: You can cross the park with a boat if if
- 39:15Speaker 1: it was impossible or otherwise impractical to get to that
- 39:23Speaker 1: location by other means impossible or otherwise impractical. Right, there's
- 39:33Speaker 1: so much room for interpretation. A friend of mine in
- 39:35Speaker 1: law enforcement, when I was discussing with him the other day,
- 39:37Speaker 1: he says, Man, the minute you throw a word like
- 39:39Speaker 1: impractical into a law, you have just opened up the floodgates.
- 39:45Speaker 1: He says. No person in law enforcement, he says, wants
- 39:47Speaker 1: to see the words impractical. The hell does that mean? Well,
- 39:54Speaker 1: this same individual years ago, a couple not years ago,
- 39:58Speaker 1: a couple of years ago drew the buffer zone tag,
- 40:01Speaker 1: and if you call the park Service, the Park Service
- 40:04Speaker 1: will tell you that you can't cross that little strip
- 40:12Speaker 1: with a bow. They'll say you have to go. It's
- 40:16Speaker 1: about a nine mile trip to get back into some
- 40:18Speaker 1: of these areas by horse, some of the areas, some
- 40:20Speaker 1: of the areas now here listen to this too, though, Well, no,
- 40:24Speaker 1: to get to the to get to the area that's
- 40:26Speaker 1: like that people would want to go hunt for archery
- 40:28Speaker 1: if they had the buffer zone tag is nine miles
- 40:31Speaker 1: from a trailhead, and then you wind up a few
- 40:36Speaker 1: d yards from the road. So you're doing a nine
- 40:38Speaker 1: mile trip to wind up a few hundred yards from
- 40:41Speaker 1: the road. Because you cannot recover game across the park anyways.
- 40:51Speaker 1: So it opens up this thing that you could go
- 40:53Speaker 1: in with a gun or go in with a bow,
- 40:58Speaker 1: which we'll get to. But if you kill elk, you
- 41:00Speaker 1: can't retrieve it across the park. You have to find
- 41:03Speaker 1: another way out of there. Okay. So this individual that
- 41:08Speaker 1: I know had a plan. He's got he's got access
- 41:11Speaker 1: to horses. He's like, oh no, if I kill one,
- 41:13Speaker 1: if I crossed the little strip with my bow and
- 41:15Speaker 1: kill one. I'm gonna go get my horses. He's gonna
- 41:19Speaker 1: go get his buddies horses and these ride nine miles
- 41:21Speaker 1: and get the damn Elk fully plans on it where
- 41:25Speaker 1: he runs into a park ranger from a Yellowstone park ranger.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Park ranger says, if I catch you doing that, I'm
- 41:29Speaker 1: gonna write you a ticket. He says, Man, I just
- 41:32Speaker 1: got off the phone with the people in Washington, d C.
- 41:34Speaker 1: About how that rule be interpreted. I also brought it up.
- 41:37Speaker 1: I brought it up with with Fosburgh, President and CEO
- 41:40Speaker 1: of Theater Rose about conservation partnership. Not an Elk hunter
- 41:44Speaker 1: doesn't put in for the buffer zone tag has zero
- 41:46Speaker 1: skin in the game. He was. He basically was like
- 41:50Speaker 1: he remembered, he remembered working on codifying the legislation around this,
- 41:57Speaker 1: and he said, hold on, Mante, there's an argument about
- 42:00Speaker 1: other it would be impractical to walk a couple hundred
- 42:03Speaker 1: yards versus a nine mile trip. He's like, I'd love
- 42:07Speaker 1: to see someone make that case. Anyways, This ranger that was,
- 42:13Speaker 1: that was I don't want to use the word harassing.
- 42:14Speaker 1: This ranger that was, yeah, I don't know, semi harassing.
- 42:18Speaker 1: A friend of mine was putting it that. His interpretation
- 42:21Speaker 1: was that's not impractical. I had a person from the
- 42:26Speaker 1: National Park come and check my license a couple of
- 42:29Speaker 1: days ago. I said to him after he checked my license,
- 42:32Speaker 1: I didn't know. I didn't know they could do that apparently.
- 42:35Speaker 1: I mean, you can't help the park anyway, So I
- 42:36Speaker 1: don't know what it has to do with him, but
- 42:38Speaker 1: check my license. I then said, sir Um, I got
- 42:42Speaker 1: a question for you, and listen both seasons over and
- 42:44Speaker 1: I'll never have this tag again. This has nothing to
- 42:45Speaker 1: do with me. I'm just curious what's your read on
- 42:47Speaker 1: the law. And he didn't want to answer it. He
- 42:52Speaker 1: wanted to have like an ethical he he wanted to
- 42:55Speaker 1: have an ethical conversation with me Um. He felt that
- 43:01Speaker 1: this tag is meant for the kind of person who
- 43:05Speaker 1: would want to go nine miles. Oh give that a
- 43:10Speaker 1: lot of people now just want that easy hunt. He said,
- 43:13Speaker 1: no offense to anyone here, but they just want that
- 43:15Speaker 1: easy hunt for Instagram. No, he brought it up, that
- 43:17Speaker 1: easy hunt for Instagram. Yeah, with the odds against him,
- 43:20Speaker 1: five people getting it, it burns their ass so bad
- 43:26Speaker 1: that they could have a dude, that they could have
- 43:29Speaker 1: a dude crossing that little chunk of park to go hunting.
- 43:31Speaker 1: It tears them up. And then he kind of tried
- 43:35Speaker 1: to be a little bit misleading to you on how
- 43:37Speaker 1: to get to some other else. I was looking at,
- 43:38Speaker 1: we were looking at, we weren't looking at. We're looking
- 43:40Speaker 1: up a mountain um not too far above us. And
- 43:44Speaker 1: we're standing there in waiters okay, And he's like, you guys,
- 43:48Speaker 1: got your eyes on the bulls we had we were
- 43:50Speaker 1: watching when we're trying to see if we can find
- 43:52Speaker 1: him again. And he said, oh, so you'll go around
- 43:55Speaker 1: to a trail. There's a trail a few miles down,
- 43:59Speaker 1: So you'll go around into that trail and take that
- 44:01Speaker 1: trail up in there. And I'm staying there at chess
- 44:04Speaker 1: waiters said, no, we're across the river. Zero reply. So
- 44:13Speaker 1: it's it's contentious, like they don't like they really zero
- 44:19Speaker 1: interesting to that. And then did you go across the river? Oh?
- 44:25Speaker 1: And my friend a couple of years ago, he hunted
- 44:27Speaker 1: the piss off with his bow walking across. I think
- 44:30Speaker 1: I never got a citation because he's like he because
- 44:33Speaker 1: he like I said, he called d C. He's like,
- 44:35Speaker 1: I'm not, I don't want to deal with any I
- 44:36Speaker 1: don't want to deal with the ranger there. I want
- 44:38Speaker 1: to just call the National Park Service and get their
- 44:41Speaker 1: take on it. I don't want to have it be
- 44:43Speaker 1: I don't want to have someone like interpreting what this means,
- 44:47Speaker 1: because I just want to know the truth. Once I
- 44:49Speaker 1: knew the truth, there's no thing an individual is going
- 44:51Speaker 1: to tell me there, because I knew the truth and
- 44:54Speaker 1: I was more than ready to hash this out with
- 44:57Speaker 1: them in a court if I needed to. M hmm,
- 45:03Speaker 1: sounds like a great hunt so far. Okay, let's look
- 45:07Speaker 1: at the flip side though. The first day we're there,
- 45:10Speaker 1: we saw twenty seven bulls or something like that. First
- 45:16Speaker 1: five minutes we were there, we saw hard hunt for
- 45:20Speaker 1: video because he can't. He can't. You can't, you can't,
- 45:25Speaker 1: you can't. Even so we even looked into this, like,
- 45:28Speaker 1: you know, there's like certain right away stuff, um like
- 45:32Speaker 1: normal you can film off a road, you know, but
- 45:35Speaker 1: when the park owns both sides of the road, you can't,
- 45:37Speaker 1: like you can't use in it. You can't film anything
- 45:40Speaker 1: like that, right, you can't be on that road filming
- 45:44Speaker 1: off the It's it's strict permission. Yeah, even this guy
- 45:48Speaker 1: weirdly too, knew like he knew even though he's with NPS.
- 45:53Speaker 1: He knew where we had film permits. Asked me, and
- 45:56Speaker 1: before I could answer, he told me, huh, hey, there's
- 46:00Speaker 1: some weird information sharing that needs to happen. Well, they've
- 46:04Speaker 1: been sharing it. No, it was weird because he asked
- 46:07Speaker 1: me a question, but I didn't get a chance to
- 46:08Speaker 1: answer it. I was bummed out because then he told
- 46:09Speaker 1: me the answer. It was so he was setting you
- 46:13Speaker 1: up for a gotchair. I want to know, like, I'd
- 46:17Speaker 1: love to have to do a Freedom of Information Act
- 46:20Speaker 1: to get the body cam conversation. It was such an
- 46:25Speaker 1: interesting conversation, especially when I got shamed, and I was
- 46:28Speaker 1: getting shamed a little bit. I would love to have
- 46:30Speaker 1: the body cam conversation to be like, this isn't interesting,
- 46:34Speaker 1: just play. The conversation was he was he shaming you
- 46:37Speaker 1: about being skinny? No? No, no, no, he he has
- 46:41Speaker 1: like a body camera. No. I didn't get body shame. No.
- 46:44Speaker 1: It was like it was like that this hunts. You know,
- 46:46Speaker 1: this hunt's kind of for people. What you mean you
- 46:49Speaker 1: mean how there's like two ft of snow and it's
- 46:51Speaker 1: negative thirty degrees and and and you're not gonna like
- 46:55Speaker 1: go up Skyline Ridge. He had he had mentioned how
- 47:00Speaker 1: there was another tag holder that killed a bowl far
- 47:02Speaker 1: In did everything, he did it the right way. And
- 47:06Speaker 1: then you know what I had to point out to
- 47:08Speaker 1: him it was two people that had they had party tags,
- 47:13Speaker 1: and so he's talking about one of the people in
- 47:15Speaker 1: the party. I had to point out to him, Oh,
- 47:17Speaker 1: you know, right now, while you're telling me this, those
- 47:21Speaker 1: two individuals are right down the road with waiters on,
- 47:26Speaker 1: like literally right now. The guys that did it right,
- 47:29Speaker 1: did everything right, they're down there in waiters. And it's
- 47:34Speaker 1: not like that's just what we wanted to hunt was
- 47:35Speaker 1: right by the river either. I mean, if I was
- 47:39Speaker 1: a buffalo hunter, I'd go where the buffalo are. That's
- 47:42Speaker 1: where the buffalo are. And we tried to make it
- 47:45Speaker 1: as hard as we could, like we we we were
- 47:47Speaker 1: all over them place. Yeah, we were way back there.
- 47:50Speaker 1: There just wasn't any out there. But it's but it's
- 47:52Speaker 1: neither here nor there. It's like you get you it's
- 47:56Speaker 1: called the buffer zone. What is it? Buffer? A buffers
- 47:58Speaker 1: Yelso National Park with the surrounding National Forest, And it's
- 48:04Speaker 1: kind of like hate, the hate, the game, not the player,
- 48:11Speaker 1: Like I had zero to do with instituting the buffer zone, right, Like,
- 48:16Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I didn't know that it was such a problem.
- 48:20Speaker 1: I applied for a thing that my state is handing out.
- 48:23Speaker 1: He's just trying to do everything. I'm doing everything. I've
- 48:28Speaker 1: done exhaustive research. I don't understand the problem. Someone feels
- 48:34Speaker 1: away about it. I wonder if there's any park rangers
- 48:36Speaker 1: that are hunters down there. There's He didn't like, he didn't.
- 48:42Speaker 1: He didn't in any way threaten, he didn't. It was
- 48:46Speaker 1: just but it wasn't like, hey, guys, no, welcome to
- 48:51Speaker 1: the yesterday. It's just weird. So anyways, on the That's
- 48:59Speaker 1: all I gotta say about the Have you covered the
- 49:01Speaker 1: contentiousness of the issue, like it's Disneyland Welcome to the
- 49:04Speaker 1: Buffer Yeah, it should be like you jumped through all
- 49:10Speaker 1: the hurdles and preference points and basically got one in
- 49:14Speaker 1: almost dred entries. You went a prize welcome zero to
- 49:20Speaker 1: complain about. I just like, it's like, I've just take
- 49:23Speaker 1: the older I get, the more I'm interested in things
- 49:25Speaker 1: that that. I'm like, how is this not just that
- 49:27Speaker 1: everybody agrees on what the issue is such as the corner,
- 49:31Speaker 1: like with the corner across the thing. I would just
- 49:32Speaker 1: like to see it clarify in the courts. How is
- 49:35Speaker 1: there a question mark over Something's like, how do multiple
- 49:38Speaker 1: states not know whether or not they can't agree on
- 49:44Speaker 1: whether or not something is legal? And to have it
- 49:50Speaker 1: be that you can ask ten different people and get
- 49:52Speaker 1: ten different answers about one you can you can't do
- 49:54Speaker 1: when you hunt the buffer zone is insane. You think
- 49:57Speaker 1: they'd be like a pamphlet. Yeah, like a um ALL
- 50:01Speaker 1: agency alert, you know what I mean? Just like the
- 50:06Speaker 1: letter we got from Alaska efficient game before we went
- 50:09Speaker 1: to a fog knack, like it, heads up, that's what
- 50:12Speaker 1: you're going to deal with. You think this is how
- 50:15Speaker 1: you deal with They said, you're if you kill elk. Well, first,
- 50:17Speaker 1: it's like it's hard. If you kill elk, the carcass
- 50:21Speaker 1: will get confiscated by a bear. And it's like, here's
- 50:24Speaker 1: what's up. When I drew the d I four or
- 50:27Speaker 1: five four bison permit in Alaska, they send you a letter.
- 50:31Speaker 1: The letter basically says, you drew this, but you're kind
- 50:33Speaker 1: of screwed. Here's the deal, HM, And they lay it out.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Access issues blah blah blah blah, historic problems. Um, there
- 50:43Speaker 1: was a there was a Boa State biologist that also
- 50:47Speaker 1: another hunter. I know that they warned the other hunter
- 50:53Speaker 1: of what just what I'm talking about a chili reception,
- 50:57Speaker 1: a chili reception from the park that was that was me?
- 51:05Speaker 1: Oh that was you. Yeah, Oh I was warned. I
- 51:09Speaker 1: was worn before my when my grandpa drew the tag,
- 51:12Speaker 1: I called one of the biologists and uh, they told me,
- 51:17Speaker 1: like it was known, you don't heckled is the wrong word,
- 51:21Speaker 1: but you'd get misleading information, just like him asking if
- 51:25Speaker 1: you're going to go around the trail to go to
- 51:27Speaker 1: the elk instead of right at him through the river. Uh.
- 51:30Speaker 1: That person warned me that that was like it was
- 51:32Speaker 1: a very contentious. And then I think you were talking
- 51:36Speaker 1: about too, about people that were watching elk that were
- 51:38Speaker 1: bought ready to cross out of the park and they'd
- 51:40Speaker 1: have like company to watch them. Yeah, yeah, to help
- 51:43Speaker 1: them interpret whether or not, like oh is that really
- 51:46Speaker 1: far enough? Like is it going to go back in?
- 51:49Speaker 1: Like just making them nervous? Man, which that that's like
- 51:53Speaker 1: I think the most irritating thing about is it's it's
- 51:56Speaker 1: just trying to make you feel uncomfortable with the thing
- 51:58Speaker 1: that you're not doing anything wrong about. Yeah, it's like
- 52:01Speaker 1: borderline harder harassment. Yeah, kind of leaves you feeling that way.
- 52:06Speaker 1: But I can't, I can't good conscience go that far.
- 52:09Speaker 1: But it's something. It's something. Yeah, I think there's a
- 52:13Speaker 1: way to handle. Like I like to imagine, um. I
- 52:18Speaker 1: like to imagine myself in that role, and that I
- 52:21Speaker 1: would have come up and be like, what's going on, guys, Um,
- 52:26Speaker 1: everybody having a good time. Here's what's going on. Listen,
- 52:28Speaker 1: let's uh, you know, have you got any questions by
- 52:32Speaker 1: any this? Let' let's talk with you. I can help
- 52:33Speaker 1: you understand where I'm coming from, X, Y, and Z,
- 52:37Speaker 1: and just so we can all be not cross wires. Yeah,
- 52:40Speaker 1: I mean the point is that people are you know,
- 52:42Speaker 1: they're supposed to be enforcing the law, and if you're
- 52:45Speaker 1: not breaking any laws, it's not like you're showing up
- 52:49Speaker 1: and asking for opinions and weigh ins on you abiding
- 52:55Speaker 1: by the law. Well it's funny too, is he knew
- 52:57Speaker 1: I was Steve Renelly? Yeah? Of course, before I was
- 53:01Speaker 1: even able to identify that I had that I was
- 53:03Speaker 1: a tagholder, you knew he's looking for Stephen. It's pretty
- 53:07Speaker 1: ballsy guy, pretty ballsy guy looking for Renelli. I loved it.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Did that sour things going in? No, because I knew
- 53:19Speaker 1: I had heard so many stories about it and and
- 53:22Speaker 1: um in preparation for it, like I had even gone
- 53:25Speaker 1: to people. Um, I'd even gone to people like trying
- 53:28Speaker 1: to understand the law, understand that rules aren't because I
- 53:31Speaker 1: didn't want to be in a situation debating it. So No,
- 53:33Speaker 1: it didn't because I'm like I knew the law. In fact, Um,
- 53:39Speaker 1: I would say this is gonna sound bold ass statement.
- 53:43Speaker 1: I would say that I perhaps knew it better, I
- 53:48Speaker 1: perhaps more, I had more of an understanding of what
- 53:51Speaker 1: actually said than my interlocutor. That's a word for someone
- 53:56Speaker 1: you're talking to. So when you crossed in your way,
- 54:00Speaker 1: did you turn around to see what his facial experience?
- 54:03Speaker 1: I never stepped footing that goddamn river, had never really
- 54:09Speaker 1: I think never got to is the better? Maybe we
- 54:12Speaker 1: should have? Yeah, we should have never set footing that water. Huh,
- 54:17Speaker 1: never went over there. We hunted stuff we had, We
- 54:21Speaker 1: hunted out stuff. We spent a lot of time looking, Yeah,
- 54:24Speaker 1: across that river, too much time looking, too much time
- 54:27Speaker 1: looking across that river. Couldn't help. But look, it's too
- 54:32Speaker 1: interesting over there, all right, any what else you need
- 54:38Speaker 1: to know? Man, you said you're going to interview, Well,
- 54:41Speaker 1: are we gonna do like a are we doing to
- 54:43Speaker 1: play by players? It's just Yanni asking us he's going
- 54:46Speaker 1: to lead the play by player? Gotcha? You guys were filming?
- 54:51Speaker 1: That's correct? Meier season twelve? That's correct? Who'd you have on?
- 54:56Speaker 1: Is like actually on camera as your guests? These two?
- 54:59Speaker 1: Ye who's nobody can see? Number two over here? Cory
- 55:05Speaker 1: and Garrett number one? Who's filming? New guy? And uh?
- 55:10Speaker 1: I think you spent some time with him? Bobby, Bobby
- 55:13Speaker 1: and Ridge Pounder. Yeah, Bobby saved me on my big
- 55:17Speaker 1: run in September at the top of a big, long,
- 55:20Speaker 1: nasty climb in the heat of the day. He was
- 55:22Speaker 1: sitting there with a backpack full of ice cold water
- 55:25Speaker 1: and was like, hey, you want me to dump this
- 55:27Speaker 1: on your head? It was like, Bobby, where did you
- 55:30Speaker 1: come from? Yes? No, I mean he was hanging there.
- 55:34Speaker 1: He I mean, he's done the race of Bunch and
- 55:36Speaker 1: so he knows that when you're coming out of this
- 55:38Speaker 1: climb and you finally get up on the service road
- 55:41Speaker 1: that you're you're, you're you know, you're wondering who you
- 55:44Speaker 1: are and why you're there, and uh, a little cold
- 55:48Speaker 1: water can do person something good. Um, that explains he
- 55:52Speaker 1: was having not much. We're going through a lot of
- 55:54Speaker 1: snow and a lot of miles at times. He didn't
- 55:57Speaker 1: seem to change tune. No, he's pretty wrong mountain runner
- 56:02Speaker 1: kind of fellow. But that's good. Sounds like a good crew.
- 56:05Speaker 1: And Sam Bass with you too, Sam basis there? Good? Good?
- 56:09Speaker 1: Now that tag was the season was open? How long?
- 56:14Speaker 1: Six weeks archery, six weeks agone okay, and you hadn't
- 56:17Speaker 1: stepped footing there until the final two weeks. I was
- 56:20Speaker 1: gonna bow hunt it with Phelps in the wilderness area
- 56:25Speaker 1: where you can't film. But we're just gonna go in
- 56:27Speaker 1: there and bow hunt it. And that was our big plan.
- 56:29Speaker 1: We got all kinds of time figured out. But then
- 56:32Speaker 1: I uh drew an archery or sorry, I drew Idaho
- 56:37Speaker 1: firearm mule deer permit and scrapped my plans with Phelps.
- 56:41Speaker 1: Canceled on Phelps so I could have best both worlds
- 56:45Speaker 1: and hunt. You just draw so many premium tags. That
- 56:49Speaker 1: drew two good tags and last year I drew zero.
- 56:51Speaker 1: And I'll point out to people I apply for everything everywhere,
- 56:55Speaker 1: and I've been added a long time and have accrued
- 56:58Speaker 1: a lot of bonus points after a I'm an old man.
- 57:02Speaker 1: I'm forty eight years old. I've been applying for ship
- 57:04Speaker 1: for a long time and now I'm cashing in. Yeah,
- 57:07Speaker 1: your investments. No, it's it's a good for all those
- 57:10Speaker 1: people think that it will never happen and it's not
- 57:12Speaker 1: worth I think Steve's a prime example. Like you know,
- 57:16Speaker 1: we've been doing this together ten years, and I remember
- 57:18Speaker 1: when we first started this. We were like I was like, yeah, dude,
- 57:21Speaker 1: let's do all of them. Like I was talking to
- 57:25Speaker 1: a tag draw a consultant. I can't remember if it
- 57:27Speaker 1: was Garth Carter that told me this or Chris denn
- 57:30Speaker 1: denhim He maybe it was Chris Denham from Western Hunter.
- 57:36Speaker 1: He had said, if a guy comes to me, he
- 57:39Speaker 1: we're talking about tag draws, but we were specifically talking
- 57:42Speaker 1: about big horn drawing a big horn permit. He said,
- 57:46Speaker 1: if a guy comes to me in his thirties, I'll
- 57:51Speaker 1: tell him to get in on the tag draws. It's
- 57:53Speaker 1: not too late, and you'll draw one or two big
- 57:55Speaker 1: horn tags. If a guy comes to me in the
- 57:58Speaker 1: four in his forties, I'll tell him, you might save
- 58:02Speaker 1: all the time and hassle and just buy a guided
- 58:05Speaker 1: sheep hunt, because you're gonna be at this for years
- 58:11Speaker 1: and then by the time you get it you might
- 58:12Speaker 1: not be in the physical condition to capitalize on it anyway.
- 58:16Speaker 1: So just save yourself all that heartache and just go
- 58:20Speaker 1: higher by adult she hunt. Yeah, save the money up
- 58:23Speaker 1: and going going to sheep hunt that way, because you're
- 58:25Speaker 1: not gonna draw the tag, or you'll draw it when
- 58:27Speaker 1: you're aiding. It. Won't do any good. Not to hack
- 58:29Speaker 1: on eighty year olds. No, there's some eighty eighty year
- 58:32Speaker 1: olds that can pull it off. But I know a
- 58:34Speaker 1: bunch of you know guys guide those sort of hunts,
- 58:37Speaker 1: you know, hard to draw go hunts, sheep hunts and
- 58:40Speaker 1: stuff all over the country, and they often deal with
- 58:43Speaker 1: the problem of Okay, you know, George's coming in, he's
- 58:48Speaker 1: eighty two, he's got he's got one hunt, like literally,
- 58:52Speaker 1: like he's got one trip up the mountain, because after
- 58:55Speaker 1: he goes up there, once it comes that comes back down,
- 58:57Speaker 1: he's not going up again. So like we have to
- 59:00Speaker 1: find the animals when when the opportunity is the best
- 59:03Speaker 1: and tips to pull it off. So it is is
- 59:05Speaker 1: I mean that I said that often when I had
- 59:07Speaker 1: my sheep tag that was so fortunate to draw at
- 59:10Speaker 1: forty three, I guess that was. Uh, and have legs
- 59:15Speaker 1: to go just cruising around the mountains. You know, Corey,
- 59:17Speaker 1: did you encounter that stuff? Corey guided for how many years?
- 59:21Speaker 1: Fourteen years? Did you come across stuff like that? Christ
- 59:25Speaker 1: Chris still said you had a groove as though you
- 59:26Speaker 1: guided for fourteen years. Yeah. Cool, I wonder what that
- 59:31Speaker 1: looks like. It looks just the way you carried, just
- 59:35Speaker 1: the way you carried around that spotter. He was impressed
- 59:41Speaker 1: by how he didn't even have time to like register
- 59:44Speaker 1: and someone had said something you already had it in
- 59:46Speaker 1: focus about of practice for sure. Yeah. But yeah, I've
- 59:52Speaker 1: definitely had those clients, just old timers. It's like, you know,
- 59:57Speaker 1: they only have a little bit of steam left. Absolutely. Yeah,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: do a lot of driving around sometimes or horsebacking whatever,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: wherever you're at. Yeah, I imagine you know those clients.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: It's probably those guys that come every year as they
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: get older and older, it's like it's probably hard for
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: them to give it up. Oh yeah, it's like the
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: thing they did every year. You tell Seth just got
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: married because he still fiddles with that ring. I can't
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: um being there some folks, Garrett Core, you can win
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: on this. To some folks who say this is possibly
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: the best ELK tag in the state of Montana, I
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: would say it, I would say, and if not, it's
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: top two or three, well let's let's let's qualify. I
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: would say, I haven't been to all the units, but
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: I would say in terms of bp ms bulls per minute,
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: I don't know how you're gonna like bp ms. You're
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: not gonna beat it without paying for it. Yeah, I'm
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: sure you could get greater bpms at like or whatever,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: but like for a for public land, for non guided
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: public land hunting, I don't know how you'd get more
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: bp ms. And this is something I mentioned on when
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: we were filming, probably too much. But I think what
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: makes it the best unit is just the amount of
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: bulls that come in there from nowhere, right Like you
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: got the break stuff that everybody likes to do. But
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of those bulls are named
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: by everybody around there, and we would just like all
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: of a sudden, a bull like al would show up
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: and he's just this freak bowl. That's just maybe he
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: never came out of the park in his life. And
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: then that like one week, he decided to trot across
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: the line, you know, like you just never know what's Yeah,
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: people might have looked at him, and no one ever
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: looked at him lustily. Yeah, no, you never had a
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: lustful glance his way. And then all of a sudden,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: like some crazy bull, he doesn't know you just crossed
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: the line. And also when he crossed the line, you're
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: standing there. But it was the other thing. I don't
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: know how far we want to get ahead of ourselves here,
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: but he was still an elk, right Like he got
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: bumped one time and he disappeared for the rest. We
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: never saw get bumped by someone. He got bumped by
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: someone from a couple hundred yards away, probably three yards away.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Ran never ever laid eyes in at some bitch again.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: And we looked, Yeah, I mean look looked because you
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: were looking at him lustily. He had a hand. He
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: had a freak hand. Back to your hand, imagine you
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: had an elk and then your hand is made out
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: of antler and it's glued to the back of his beam.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: He was a five by eleven well because he had
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: this freak growth like a growth being being that you
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: applied for nearly twenty years one of those coming at
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: tags in the state, but I never applied for that
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: was the first time I applied for SILL apply for
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: different units, sure, but still you put a lot of
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: time in affter you applying for trophy units. I've always
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: there's been four I applied for it, and this is
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: the first time I tried this one. Did you feel
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: the pressure of having such a coveted tag? Yes? Absolutely,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: absolutely changed. It changed everything. M hm. How did it manifest?
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: It manifested like this? We kept telling ourselves we'd be like, um,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: you know, like Garrett and his grandfather's footsteps is a
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: publicly and cow killer. It's like, you don't you know,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: if you're out on the national forest and you see
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: a bull, there's something to get excited about. You're like,
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: you know, during general firearm to be you know, two
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: and then to be like, oh there's eight, just just
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: five little sixes in range here. It's like just it's
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: just different. Do you remember when we had the guy
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: that killed the biggest white tail in America. Uh uh
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: huff the huff buck killed. The buck falls the Indiana
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: state record might being the biggest typical white tail ever
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: killed in the US. That night, like, up until that day,
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: he was trying to get a personal best. His goal
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: every year is to get a personal best, and I
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: think he thought if he could get like a hundred
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: thirty five inch buck the personal best, that's what he
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: was out in the woods for and kills it to
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: something two inch buck. At the end of that podcast,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: I said to him, so what now with the personal
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: best deal? He goes, I go back to the day
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: before I killed that buck that never happened. We had
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: a lot of conversations about um that, you know, like
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: just reminding yourself just how unreal it is. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: reminding yourself hunt real is and being like joking about
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: can you believe that we would have the audacity to
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: be like stupid six points? Yeah, it was like the
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: first night was that he was like mid three twenties
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: bowl Corey got on his on his phone scope there
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: and we were like, I'm not worth going back there.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: I didn't see any interesting back, right, So you passed
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: up how many and how big. Well, there's like I like,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: I was like when people say like I passed up
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: a blank, I'm I was like, meaning meaning what you
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: saw it and didn't go after it? It was in
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: range after like it didn't it didn't you know, get
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: you excited enough to be like, Okay, we're gonna put
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: some effort to close the gap between where we are
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: in that ball. If we were market hunters back in
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: the old days, market hunters, I don't know, we could
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: have killed a lot of balls. I mean the one
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: night Corey was down by the river, he saw seventeen
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: and that same night and this is just bulls that
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: same night what we saw fourteen. We've seen a lot
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: of cows to some some some bands. Yeah, I should
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: I take that back. Yes, more than I expected to
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: see you for sure. Yeah, you see some cows. Bands
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: of cows, not like you know, not like like two packs,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: but but probably the biggest group. I mean, maybe in
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: excess of a dozen. Um. Yeah, I think like they'd
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: have little spikes with them and stuff, you know, with
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: all these bowls. One of the hardest things. We talked
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: about it a lot. Um Yanni, you and I have
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: talked about this cou's hunting. How like you always think
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: the biggest couse deer is at the top of the mountain.
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: M hmm um. Effort, yeah, effort to size ratio, Like
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: it didn't mean anything. So we kept thinking, like, oh,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: we gotta get to that like isolated far back spot.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: You had to hike for the dangers. Yeah, exactly, the
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: big ones if you if you got two and a
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: half miles in the trail ahead, you can see a
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: bunch of dingers, remember the big bulls to go up
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: in the mountains. And remember I saw that single track
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: way up high in the mountain in the deep snow, Like,
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: that's gotta be a giant. No. I was laughing about that.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: I think with Johnny, I was like, how could something
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: that far away be small? Yeah, it has to be big.
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: It was that far away. I think it was al
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: so yeah, um some of that. So the only other
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: bowl before you killed yours that you were lustly looking
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: after was this was this weird awl there was I
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: was lusty for four balls. I was lusty for four
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: What prohibited you from greed? Greed and lust? Available time?
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: We got there one day. The day we got there,
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: we got there at at daybreak, the morning version of
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: dusk by the time we were actually dawn. Yeah, that's
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: what I'm looking for. I'm not kidney man, I'm not
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: kiding you that I think I'm right when I say this.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: The biggest, probably maybe the biggest bull we saw, was
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: the first bull we saw. It would have required a
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: little what in that spot? How far to get off? No,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: you wouldn't. You didn't. There wasn't. It was a straight shot.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: You could have walked, You could have stepped legal the
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: legal distance off the center of the road and shot
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: and shot. He was like sparring his buddy a couple
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: of what he was I don't know, maybe two hundred
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: yards under three hundred yards. And my thought was, if
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: that son of a bitch is standing there, imagine how
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: big of the one that must be behind us. And
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: that set us down a strange path. You know. That
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: happened to me a little bit in Lavia, which we'll
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: get to it another time, but it happened to the
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: other day. When I parked to go deer hunting. I
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: got I got as where I was gonna park on
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: private to go hunt some public but I mean I
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: was literally like on the fence where I parked, and
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: as I'm in the car sort of fiddling around, two
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: dolls walk within rifle range across a little meadow into
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: the woods. I get out, put my pack on and
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: I'm literally grabbing my gun out of the back seat
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: and I look back up the hill and there's a
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: nice eight point buck and like, without having any effort invested,
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: it just didn't feel right. And the same thing happened
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: to me in Latvia, where I had an opportunity. It
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: was so early in the hunt. I was unfamiliar with
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: the land, the woods, the habitat, the animals, and just
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: didn't have the girl in here at all. And I'm
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: sure that you probably had a little bit of that too,
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: That first moment where you're like, oh, well, there's a
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: giant but and you don't want it to end. You
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: want felt totally weird. It would have felt totally weird.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: What what also got us, though, is how how trackable
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: what they were A man like that bowl was two
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: yards the second day from where we saw him on
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: the first day, and then the next day he was
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: in the same exact spot, Like it almost just seemed
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: like they're always gonna be there now I'd always heard
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: it was kind of a migration hunt, where like every
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: day or possibly you're gonna have critters coming out of
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: the park because there's cold weather and snow up higher
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: in the park, they're moving. Did you guys see that
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: that remains? We got there right after a severe weather event,
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: meaning onset of a severe cold snap, a bunch of
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: snow and stuff. Had a stirred up feeling about it, Okay,
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: just weird stuff, but then it stabilized, very clear skies,
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: no precipitation, extraordinarily cold, like we are. The coldest morning
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: we hunt, it was negative twenty nine. We spent whole
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: days in negatives, crept up in like nine or ten
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: or whatever. But like and then it just everything just
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: that frenetic craziness seemed to pass. They did seem like
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: there was like new stuff, you know, I don't know
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: that was my perception anyways, You're like, how could there
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: be this many tracks in brand new snow? Felt feeling
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: about it, you know, like what in the helm hast
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: been going on here to make that number of tracks
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: and snow that hasn't been here forty eight hours? It's like,
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: how could that be possible? And that definitely seemed to chill,
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: but like it was like a wave of stuff happened
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: and then it stabilized. Just very cold. We had that suit.
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: You know what was interesting that negative morning. We were
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: looking at elk at night and the next morning was
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: negative twenty nine, and we were able to find all
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: those elk and they were like six ft away from
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: where we found. There's like they that they didn't they
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: didn't strike out in that. They seem to be like,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: I'm just hunered. Yeah, here feeding. They didn't seem to
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: shuffle and that and that extreme cold. It was like
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: they just they they for whatever reason, they seem to
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: conserve energy. I'm where, I'm not doing some crazy exploration
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: right now. A negative negative weather, Yeah, they can't afford
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: to stop eating right there. I remember kind of getting
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: excited for that cold weather and then realizing that it
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: wasn't helpful. Everything seemed to stop. I was in my mind,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: I was thinking, oh, this cold snap, those bulls are
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: gonna have to move all night long, Like they're just
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: gonna be in the park and be like I'm getting
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: to greener pastures tonight because it's cold. But that's not
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: what happened. I think it was by the third By
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: the third day, I think we saw the last new
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: bowl of significance. Yeah. Whatever day, weird Al showed up.
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: We're you ever glassing into the park. Oh yeah, we wouldn't.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: We wouldn't pour the coals to it, but we would
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: look in there and sea bowls in there. He saw,
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: he's I didn't see it, but he saw far and away.
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: When he said far and away, the biggest bull was
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: in a drainage. He cut Sam and I we went
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: up into an area and and then he cut down
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: and went down this drain the drainage down through the
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: park and he saw a tanker there was he was
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: with fourteen, He was with thirteen other bulls in there. Yeah.
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: We we walked out what it was like one o'clock,
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: I think, and Sam and I would only pull up
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: glass if we could see something with our naked eye,
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: pretty much, and we saw twenty bowls walking out of there,
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: one group of fourteen and yeah, man, like a straight
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: six three eight class bowl in there. That just blew
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: my mind. Wow, Yeah, just good. A little video. No
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: we didn't get a video of and we didn't have
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: a spot or with us, but you know that big
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: landscape called Yellows a National Park got in the way
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: Steve going in there. Yeah, uh, well, I guess to
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: tell me about the one that you did crack in
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: the end. I want to talk about something different first. Well,
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: I'll tell you two interesting things. Um, we're the whole
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: time wondering like a negative twenty nine and then the
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: snow was up to the mid middle of your shin
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: not I don't want to devide, wasn't need you, snow
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: was shin deep snow. And then and then that was
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: the lowest temperatures negative twenty nine, but there was a
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: It was always at least negative ten in the mornings,
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: cold mornings, and we kept thinking, are the grit like,
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: what do the grizzly bears do? Like they gotta go?
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: They don't. They're out wandering around just freezing their little
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: feet off. Can you imagine what that must feel like
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: they're out freezing her asses. I'm I'm I'm anthropomorphizing. I
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: don't know if they're cold. It just seemed like a
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: bad what are you surprised they weren't in their little
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: dans even if they're gonna get back out again later
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: when it warms up. Yeah, there's out pounding the pavement.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: Do you saw quite a few? No? I saw one
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: track in one bear just cruising. One day we're on
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: the highway and Garrett sees a bunch of where all
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: these kinds of stuff was crossing the road and he
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: just stops and looks in his headlights, thinking it's all
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: elk tracks. But it's all wolf tracks. And that day
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: we're gonna do a big hike up of drainage and
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: get on that drainage and wolf tracks just crisscrossing everywhere.
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: But eventually the wolf tracks all lying out and they're
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: just going down the trail round. I mean, it's like
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: it looks like sled dogs going on. It looks like
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: a dog park, like just insane amount tracks, big old
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: beautiful ship pile pissing on stage bushes. You could have
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: got down and ate that pistone wolf wolf piston. He
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: could have. I seriously, I'm like, what you could. I
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: seriously thought about eating that wolf pistol. I don't know
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: about smelling it for the power. Yeah, you might get
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: some pot kind of power out of it. See what
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: they're lifting their little legs and we're going, going, going,
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: And I started getting I just started to be like,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: we are going to see because there's a bunch of
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: elk up here. We're gonna see him in Lo and
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: behold on a far away ridge. There they were m h.
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: Garrett took a poke. Yeah, here's the thing. It's killing me. Well, no,
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: it shouldn't. I had always said to Garrett when we
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: were talking about he's gonna come with, I had said,
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: you can you know, each had a wolf tap. But
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: I'm like, if you see a wolf, but your crack.
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: And he didn't grab his his precision, his own personal
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: precision long range rifle which he shoots competitively with, and
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: you know it's real well like an extension of his
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: hand back to your hand again. Yeah. I think the
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: disappointing part about it is I was having an argument
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: with myself walking up the trail about go because we
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: got on the trail and what it was within fifty
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: yards were on those tracks again, and we're walking up
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: the trail and I'm like, it's the trucks right there.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: All you gotta do is turn around and go grab
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: that gun. But man, I've also borrowed my gun to
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: people and have a miss stuff and then blame the
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: gun be like, oh no, I was on him. So
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: I don't want to even pull that argument like that
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: I used your gun and shot Yeah, Like I don't.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: I don't. I don't want to go there. I think
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: what I'm what eats me the most is just when
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: you've hunted enough and you've shot enough, you think that
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: you can detach from the emotion side of it a
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: little bit, where you can be like, no, I probably
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: shouldn't take this shot, or I should probably maneuver to
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: get a little closer we're getting. Yeah, maybe if I
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: would listen to you. Um, But I think that's what
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: gets me the most is instead of doing that where
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: I like could detach a little bit, I was just
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: it was a wolf man. I've been chasing wolves ever
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: since you could buy a wolf tag, and it's just
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: like I gotta take somebody else's gun at a range
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: it's probably a little bit too far, and had had
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: to do it. M hm oh man, yeah, clean, miss fun,
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: very clean. Miss watched him for a long time after
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: he ran well, yeah, scared him. Yeah, so does that
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: that's fun? M core. You haven't said a whole hell
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: a lot where you at on this whole thing. Oh,
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: just still reliving it. I mean we just got back today,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: so you know, like Garrett said earlier, just coming down
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: from the high. But you've haunted us some, You've you've
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: guided us some premier ELK locations. Yeah. Did it feel
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: different for you? No, it felt very similar. I mean
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: passing up it felt like what it feels like hot
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: guiding that premier ELK location. Yeah, passing up world class
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: once in a lifetime, elp to hopefully see something bigger
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: and then hopefully keeping those big bowls in your back
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: pocket to come back later. But a lot of times
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: it doesn't pan out like that. So did it live
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: up to the hype? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, I mean if
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: you want to, yeah, if you want to look at
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: a tune of bulls and I do. I was talking
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: to Jake about that because after I don't know if
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: you were already shown in pictures, we were getting a
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: lot of pictures those of us that weren't on the
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: hunt from Steve. I mean, like, how much how big
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: is this one? Score this one? I'll figure the fifth
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: on this one. I told, I said, Jake probably like
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: to play this game too, So I don't know if
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: and uh he said that he haunted it like four
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: or five years ago with a buddy had the tag
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: and he said it was the best hunt ever. They
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: spent like almost thirty days in there and just had
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: unbelievable bugling. It's just some people think that the guarantee
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: is not the four Bowl. The guarantee is seeing a
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: lot of bills and to go in there every day
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: and be like, oh, let's just start cow calling and
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: just be almost guarantee, call in after calling, after calling.
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: I mean, that's why our buddy j likes to hunt
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: on some of these ranches like where he used to guide.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: Is like, you ain't gotta go days without seeing an
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: elk or whatever. She's like, you step out of the
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: truck and sometimes they buw go into car door shots.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: You know, you know what you know. Hayden one day
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: said something to me that a little bit listen. It
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: was a tremendous blessing. I had a wonderful time. It
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: was crazy to see all those elk. But here's a
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: here's an issue. Hayden one day said to be something
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: about um that he likes to spend his time exploring
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: replicable experiences mm hmm. Meaning and it's it's like a
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: thing I feel and he put he put a good
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: word to it, meaning you're always looking for like a
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: thing that you can make part of your discipline, that
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: you can make part of your annual cycle. Do you
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: know what I mean? The difference between finding of finding
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: a great fishing spot that you can get to and
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: you understand it. It's like, yeah, man, I've over like
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: take fishing Halibut. Okay, I've got fifteen years into my
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: little Alibi area. And it's a really cool relationship, right
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: to have with the place and to be able to
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: like grow with it and watch it change and be like, oh,
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: I can't believe we used to always go there, and
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: then we realize one day that if you go over there,
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: it's or or if they're not there, go check there.
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: Because and you you established this whole elaborate interplay with
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: something over time, right, and you watch by changes. So
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: to go and do a once in a lifetime situation
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: And I feel this every time it happens to me.
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: You're so thankful to do it, but you go do
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: it and you're already nostalgily, You're already like there's nostalgic
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: is not the right word for it. You're right away
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: get hit by oh I can't go do this again,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: Like now that I know, i'd he's so interesting to
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: go again, nor would I now know. That's why Garrett
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: had Garretts. They were drawn the damn tag. But he
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: had such a good time because he thought when he
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: was there with his grandpa, he'd never get to do
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: it with someone who could know no offense to your grandpa,
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: someone that was gonna go real fast up the trail
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: because he was come on, Grandpa, come on, yeah, yeah,
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: we gotta go. I was way you know, I was
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: so excited when he do that that tag. But you're
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: right having been in there, man, I was a hundred
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: times more excited when you drew it because it was like,
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: I get to go back to this place that I
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: know a little bit about. The thing is, though, is
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: it's elk hunting, dude, and it's like what I experienced
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: with my grandpa was very different than what you and
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: I experienced as far as where the elk were, how
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: the elk moved. And so maybe that's the takeaway is like, yeah,
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: you're not gonna go in there and hunt it next year,
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: but you learned more about elk because you had so
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: many encounters with that. That was you made that point
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: when and I hadn't even brought up the feeling I
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: get of doing when I get to go have those respects,
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: like when I drew the toke the toke doll sheep tam.
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: It's great, but you're like, man, where's that? Go do
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: that next year? Right, but you'll never do that, you
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: know what I mean. But you were addressing that what
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: I hadn't even brought it up, and you said, like,
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: I'll tell you one thing that being here has impacted
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: how I hunt elk, and that I'm able to watch
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: so many bulls relate they're still elk, right, they still
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: gotta eat and they gotta sleep. They you know, they
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: they come out of the timber um right before dark,
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: they go back into the timber you know, right at daybreak.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: And you're like, I got to watch how elk be
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: elk to a degree that that would take a lifetime
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: to accumulate that many experiences of watching how bulls be
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: bulls like what they do. And then true, you could
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: go sit there and and then you imagine that you're
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: shrinking it down to where it's a tenth as many
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: a twentieth as many, a thirtieth as many, but you
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: still have in your head like that little timber patch
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: seems like a place. Yeah, little bull wud want to
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: lay in this cold, snowy ass weather. And I bet
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: you when he comes out, he's gonna do this thing.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: He's gonna do this thing. Yeah, l cutting buddy telling
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: me that he spends his time looking at ten percent
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: of the mountain. M hm, and I you know that's like,
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: we got to see what ten percent of the mountain.
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: Elk live on the river is a little because I would,
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: I would look, I would, I would make a hobby
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: of trying to be like, why can't I ever find
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: a bowl and huge areas and be like, I don't
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: care what you do. You cannot find a bowl and
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: a huge area that I would have thought would be
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: loaded with them. They ain't there right right? And I
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: can tell that because I know we're all the ones
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: that are there are you know, yep, Like no one
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: likes that spot, No elk likes that spot. Yeah it's
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: not always convenient, man, Yeah, you know it's interesting. I
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: like this idea of replicable experiences, but also for me personally,
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: I like, uh because I'm with like, there's nothing better
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: than the second time in the spot where you sort
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: of you got your titilated. The first time you're coming
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: in feeling cocky, you know, like I know where they're
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: gonna be, I know what that hillside looks like, I
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: know where to look. We're not to look the third time.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: Often I'm kind of like, okay, yeah, and I'm starting
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: to all of a sudden juggle in my head like
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: I would be cool if I was just in a
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: totally different spot, learning new country and just back at
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: ground zero, because I enjoy so much just newness, you know.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: So Anyways, the boat we got, there's a lot to
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: talk about. Um we Corey spotted it from the highway
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: in a crazy place like up in like rock up
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: in Rock Pile Cliff, not crazy, but steeping up that
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: he had a time off. I saw when you guys
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: were chopping him. The only reason he didn't go down
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: that whole mountain by himself, as he got hung up
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: on his own rack. It was a bull. We had
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: seen a couple of miles away. Probably a couple of
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: miles Yeah, we've seen it a couple miles away. He's
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: very identifiable because he had busted off his he he
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: had big uh big Royals swords fourths, like really impressive
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: like his other times or whatever. But he had he's
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: like just freaking Narwaltuss coming out of his fourths and
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: he had snapped his rack off behind that, So you
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: knew you knew who you're looking at. Um, here's where
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: this gets interesting. We had seen three bulls that looked
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: like they had rubbed the hide on their backs. If
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: you had saw in September, be like, oh he's been
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: he's been wallowing and has dried mud on his back.
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: But it's not September October, right, We're in the mid November.
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: Three of them to have this. And we had talked
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: even about like what is going out that dude's back?
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: Why is he having that problem on his back? Hold
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: that thought because it had been a very cold morning
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: and the sun was just starting to hit the rocks
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: and he was in this cliffy rocky area like you
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: could imagine an area that would have great radiant heat.
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: And I don't know how in the hell Corey sees it.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: It was like yards above the road we were going
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: sixty two. And it's because it's something not not that
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: the trap, I means, one of the most incredible game
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: spots I've ever seen. But he had come out to
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: sun and was sitting broadside up by a rock, like
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: basking in the sun. Um stock ass still okay, but
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: on his feet not bedded. Keep in mind the ship
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: with the back stuff. Okay. So we turn around and
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: go park at a trailhead and we figure where we
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: could climb up and do it like a ridge to
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: ridge shot. Well, get up there. He's still there. We
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: have a debate about what's up with that bull? Why
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: is he doing that? And at times he's got his
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: eyes closed and he's got his eyes open. We're like,
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: he's like basking in the sun, um and killed him.
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: We get up there, and that stuff on his back,
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: like the hair on his back, you could pull it
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: out in clumps, and he's got a big patch around
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: his mound, around his hump. I later got on the
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: phone with a with a state vat the bulls we
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: were seeing had Maine and she says it's hard for
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: him to keep warm. It can be bad enough where
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: and he was thin, like a big long body, but
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: but he tasted fine. We ate some last night. Just
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: could be curious about it. Um hip bones sticking out,
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: not like small backstraps, small backham smallish back hamp. Just
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: look poor, you know what he looked like. It's like
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: a like a like a milked out dairy cow, that
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: kind of like skeleton here there. Even though like a
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: big heavy rack. He had been feeling frisky enough to
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: snap his to be fighting like built like like a
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: great rack. I'm gonna have a rough rent winter. He's
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: not gonna make the winter. And when I talked to
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: that that she said, I said, well, he was skinny.
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: She said, we see that they can't keep warm and
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: they don't want to bed down, and they're just eating
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: and it takes so much caloric energy. Um. And and
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: it's funny, is that was his that hide there was
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: frozen like wet and frozen. And she said, they're so
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: hungry they can't keep warm. He had gone a couple
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: of miles. Said, they're just on their feet, eating, eating,
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: but they can't keep up with it. And she said,
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: and in a bad winter, it can kill them before
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: they get they can kill him before they get better.
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: I don't think he was gonna live. He didn't have
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: many days left. I don't think he was gonna live.
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: We saw one once when I lived in Colorado. There
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: was a little batch of bulls. There was I don't know,
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: three or four of them. They were up above the
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: hill the house on his hillside, nos Public. We'd watch
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: him every day and one morning I'm laying in bed
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: and I'm looking at him, and I get my glasses
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: out and I can see that he's got like snow
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: on him, and it just snowed like a little dusting.
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: I could see that he's like he's like bedded, but
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: like looks like he's a little leaned over, you know.
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: And that's like finally went got the spot and really
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: looked close. I'm like, man, I think he just perished
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: last night, you know, like we have been watching them
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: the night before. And so Jennifer and I she was
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: actually prego with our first one, and we hike up
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: there real quick, bro saw with us, and uh, sure enough,
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: there he is. Did it as a doornail, and he
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: had that same patch but it wasn't on his mound
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: but right on his hip, but a dinner plate size pass.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: And uh, when I talked to the and it was
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: late I remember as my brother in law's birthday, which
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: is h Nolah Marsch And uh yeah. The wardens said, yeah,
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: winter weekends and spring kills. When I talked, I, we're
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: bringing a patch that high. We got in touch with
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: the state VAT and they want to we're bringing him
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: a sample the hide so she can take a look
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: at it. Um. She said, we see it. Um, we've
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: been dealing with it for some years. We see a
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: lot of it. She named three or four places where
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: you see a fair bit of it. Tends to hit
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: old bulls m more than house. Um. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: And what's funny though, is Zip two shots right through
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: the boiler room on him, and he kept his feet
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: for a long time. He wasn't like unstrong, but at
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: that I mean, it's mid November, man, and he already
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: looks like it's mid November. He looked like what you'd
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: expect him to look like in March. He was gonna
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: make it he's got wolves to deal with. Yeah, I
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: was gonna say, it's an easy wolf snack there, you know,
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: and hanging out in him rock piles like that, he's
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: gonna get cougared. You know. He's just got a lot.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: There's like there's no way that bull is gonna be alive,
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: and a lot against him, there's no I mean, if
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: you're looking at how and then he's not going to
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: rebuild because it's already everything, he's already covered in snow.
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: He doesn't It came so early. Um, we're coming out
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: of weeks of like unseasonably cold weather. I think that
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: I wouldn't be I mean, people killed a lot of
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: elk this year. I had a lot of elker gun
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: die this year. And then the fact that we saw
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: three balls like that, all big bulls. I wonder we
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: saw that bowl down. When we first saw him, he
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: was down along the creek acting weird, acting weird. And
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: then when Corey spotted him, he was way up high
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: and there was always like an inversion every morning it
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: seemed like where it was. Oh no, he wasn't acting weird.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: Done by the creek. I think I met that other
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: bull that had that, that had that patch on his home.
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that's ex poaint that betted right along the road.
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: He was acting weird. He was in the park, Yeah
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: he was, But I wonder if he went all the
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: way up high. They're just too seek warmer temperatures, you know,
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: because downlong in the creek in the morning was freaking cold.
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: I caught his track. He had been he had been
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: zig zagging up that hill, feeding on you know that
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: some of that some of that snow was Um what's
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: it called when snow melts but doesn't melt. Um, that's
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: what you do when you freeze dry something like the
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: snow sublemates right like go from it just vanishes in
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: the sun. And it happens even below freezing like it sublimates,
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: bakes it off without like around stuff that gets radiant
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: heat around rocks, You'll see it around tree trunks. Um,
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: he was, uh, zigzagging up that feeding on that grass
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: that was melting away from the from the tree trunks
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: that were getting sunlight. But yeah, he might have been
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: going there to get warm. I don't know something I
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: forgot to tell you. Uh, because Corey and I talked
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: to the other tag holders last night. Um, they had
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: videos of that ball that you killed in daily and
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: I don't remember the name they had for him, but
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: there was a goofy name because they had him on
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: their space. They had filmed them in the park and Uh,
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: they that he was just acting goofy like they said
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: that he would just like and they had videos of him.
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: He would just turn around and kick up in the air,
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: like spin around, kick up in the air, and then
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: stand there and stare at the ground and then walk
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: a little further. Like when he was walking, he would
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: like it seemed like he was swaying a bunch and everything. Yeah,
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: just acting goofy. And I can't remember the name they had.
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: It was like they were like, what is up with
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: this well I had and I don't. I don't think
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: they've had it in there. I mean I could. I
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: was just gonna ask about it. I don't think that.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: It's like talking to the vet about like the hair
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: loss deal. Yeah, And we sat there talking about what
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: was going on with him. Yeah, we contemplated shooting him
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: because it's like, man, is that we played just shooting
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: him for and then being like, hey we shot him,
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: you know, yeah, manage misery issue another tag place. No,
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: I'm good. I'm good when I got It's a beautiful Elk,
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: yeah for sure, but it's crazy area. It's crazy area.
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: I've never seen anything like. I've never seen anything like it.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you can you do with a Yellowstone and
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: go see. Yeah, let's go hang out in Lamar Valley
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: a little bit. Well, it sounds like a good hunt.
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna start applying again. Yeah, we both know a
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: few people that have drawn with a lot less points
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: than you drew. What you need to do is look
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: up with someone it's got twenty points and do a
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: party tag, give me a shout, be careful what you
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: wish for good anything else you gotta wanna tell us about?
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: Any other real highlights. I don't know, it's been fun epic. Man.
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: If you think going in that like that week of
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: hunting that we did, if everyone still had their tags,
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: that would be a different experience. Oh m hm, you know,
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: just like constantly running into the other tag holder, like
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: I couldn't imagine they're being all like all five there
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: would be interesting. If I'm not saying they should do this,
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: be interesting if you broke it out, you made five
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: chunks of time. M h. I mean I could say
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: in archery season though, there's kind of like the bulls
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: are in one spot right now. Archery season they're more
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: spread out the other in a very confined area. No, man,
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: it was I don't know, it was something. It was interesting.
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: You seem a bit sad or down or something. Well,
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: it's been a lot of time thinking about that, and
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: then you know, and then you do it. You do it,
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: and then it's like listen, when I drew that tope
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: doll sheep tag, we had a big chunk of time,
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: square it up, you know, and got it like a
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: beautiful ram real quick. And then I spent five years
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: thinking about if we'd just run those ridges for ten days.
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: I just I don't know, I don't know, like when
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: you when I imagine Sunday, my kids will leave to
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: go off to college, and I'll be real sad, and
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: I'll think about when my when I my Bufford hunt
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: was over. That's why it's nice to live in a
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: state like Montana, where now we can think about dogs
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: for a little bit, and then we got mountain lions
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: coming right on up, and before you know, we'll be
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: thinking about turkeys. And then I got you turkey at
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: Doug Durn's. That's the highlight of my ear. That's a
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: replicable experience. No, it's just suppressing, man, because it's like
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: it was like so exciting, yeah, because you see you know, Yeah,
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: I don't know, man, it's just like it's all part
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: of the thing. It's all part of the experience. I've
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: drawn some incredible permits, and it's like I did a
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: cool hunt and Idaho this year, and I'll like to
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: if I could just go do that all the time,
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: I would give up everything else. Corey and I were
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: at the cabin this morning and we described it as
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: like the day after Christmas. Yeah, yeah, sure, man, it's
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: all part of it. It's like it's exciting to draw it.
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: You're so happy. You do all the research, you find
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: all the people that had it before, you share notes.
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: You're like living for it, you know, and then you
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: pull the trigger. Then all of a sudden you're done.
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: It's just like it's just sad, not in a bad way.
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: It's just it's it's it's it's it's sad and a
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: great way. It's sad and a great way. It's sad
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: and a great way. This one. When I draw the tag,
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: I'll invite you, Steve. I'll need a second set of eyes.
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: It's pretty fun man, you too, Garrett. It's a little sad.
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: Feel sad for me. Philm We make a musical called
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: The Buffer Zone Musical Theater. We have one guy that
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: can sing and dance. We know that I'll play the
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: park ranger. Mr Ronnelly don't want to go that way.
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: Rules as rules. Oh, I don't tell you. One last thing, man,
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: we got a show like if I ever. It's a
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: new show called Dog Justice. I'll tell you about some
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: our time. It's a great show concept. I'm gonna share
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: them with you. I heard about another new show concept.
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: I was the last night at dinner or on this morning,
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: my daughter after we hunted Wisconsin deer Camp this weekend.
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: She got to come for the first time and U
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: she was on a high last night after dinner. She's like,
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: let's play a game of cribice. You know, I'm like cards.
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: She's been playing cards for a while. But just like, yeah,
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: she was in the in the groove, you know. It
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: was all the guys cooled her, even though she's a girl. Yeah,
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: you're worried about that because the old you know, old
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: fellers deer camp. Yeah. Yeah, they had to say a
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: few jokes, you know, maybe under their breath, you know,
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: or look around before they said something. But not for
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: the most part, it was no, I would not. For
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: the most part, it was all great, but she came
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: at me last night or this morning, was like, I
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: got a new show idea me, Jimmy and Ronnella. We'll
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: call it the Next Generation. I love it. Oh? Was
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: she was? Was I the first woman at deer Camp? Yes,
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: that's crazy. Yeah. Over fifty years she'll be running it. Someday,
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: could be she'll be running deer Camp. Yeah. And in
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: a hundred years there might be a guy who was like,
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: I'm the first guy that's been here in fifty years.
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: It's all women. Well he's coming down, Ni. Yeah, you're welcome.
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: That was enjoyable. I'm glad I got to hear the story,
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: you know, full story. So busy these days we often
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: don't get swapped hunting stories fully like that. Yeah, Steve,
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: I've told you before that my favorite shows are the
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: authors and the archaeologists and the historians, UM and I
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: Usually sometimes I'll scroll my phone during the hunting stories.
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: But that was a good show. This one was Are
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: you saying next? I bought tickets to your thing? Yes?
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: Do you get a cart to the door? No comment?
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: All right, thank you everybody. E
