- 1:48Speaker 1: We are on episode twenty three entitled.
- 1:51Speaker 2: The Stars Will Fall from the Sky.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And this is a reference to the passing of Garrison,
- 1:58Speaker 1: and so maybe a trigger warning is appropriate. We are
- 2:01Speaker 1: going to be talking about the passing of Garrison. This
- 2:05Speaker 1: is the episode in which we discuss Garrison's passing, how
- 2:10Speaker 1: it happened, and how it has affected the family. Now,
- 2:14Speaker 1: do you have any takeaways that you want to talk
- 2:16Speaker 1: about at the top or.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Oh this episode made me cry?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Yeah, it was sad. Yeah. My main thought was that
- 2:24Speaker 1: I did not appreciate how this episode was constructed. I
- 2:28Speaker 1: think this subject called for an entire episode, and I
- 2:34Speaker 1: think I saw Nicky's husband, I think his name is
- 2:36Speaker 1: John Nicki Haverstock's husband say like, we can have a
- 2:39Speaker 1: whole I don't know, four episodes special for Christine's wedding,
- 2:44Speaker 1: but we can't have one dedicated episode for Garrison's passing.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Make it make sense, and it doesn't make sense, And
- 2:50Speaker 1: I absolutely echo that sentiment. I think we should have
- 2:54Speaker 1: set aside some real time to talk about it, but
- 2:58Speaker 1: we didn't. Instead, we had, you know, a scene with
- 3:01Speaker 1: Christine and a scene with Mary, which I will go
- 3:03Speaker 1: over very quickly, but I really wish that production had
- 3:08Speaker 1: done it a little differently.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I will never understand their decisions with this kind
- 3:13Speaker 2: of stuff. I thought Mary and Christine's parts in this
- 3:17Speaker 2: were not important, like in this episode. I mean, like
- 3:21Speaker 2: they may have been fine in some of the other
- 3:24Speaker 2: episodes in the season, like they were just not really
- 3:28Speaker 2: needed right here. Like I don't give a fuck by
- 3:31Speaker 2: Lizzie's heritage in being closed. No, I don't really give
- 3:34Speaker 2: a fuck about Christine and David having petty little arguments
- 3:38Speaker 2: like every other married couple does. Like that's cool, that's great, right,
- 3:41Speaker 2: Like we're having a really serious conversation and a really
- 3:46Speaker 2: sad episode talking about Garrison's passing. But I am glad
- 3:50Speaker 2: that they finally addressed it, and I'm glad that they
- 3:52Speaker 2: did actually cover him in an episode, even though it
- 3:56Speaker 2: wasn't a full length one. I'm glad that they covered
- 3:58Speaker 2: him and they talked about him. We got to hear
- 4:00Speaker 2: from other members of the family too.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and I was happy that we got to see
- 4:05Speaker 1: him because they had completely erased him out of the
- 4:08Speaker 1: entire season, so we know that he participated in some
- 4:11Speaker 1: of the things, and yet we never got to see Garrison,
- 4:14Speaker 1: and so just seeing some photographs and him with his
- 4:17Speaker 1: family or doing the things that he loved, I thought
- 4:20Speaker 1: was really very meaningful. So let me just very quickly
- 4:23Speaker 1: run through the top of the episode. We open with Christine.
- 4:27Speaker 1: She has invited some of her friends and family over
- 4:30Speaker 1: to the home in Salt Lake City, and it seems
- 4:33Speaker 1: like a nice festive time. I think this entire segment
- 4:37Speaker 1: was sort of set up to show us that Christine
- 4:40Speaker 1: is assimilating into a regular type of relationship, a monogamous relationship,
- 4:46Speaker 1: and she has previous to this and certainly while married
- 4:49Speaker 1: to Cody, been the one to kind of call the
- 4:52Speaker 1: shots in the home life, like her kids listened to her.
- 4:56Speaker 1: To Christine, not necessarily to Cody. She was the one
- 5:00Speaker 1: who made the rules. She was the one who did
- 5:02Speaker 1: all of the parenting for the most part. But now
- 5:05Speaker 1: that she is married with David, she has to be
- 5:07Speaker 1: a partner and that's actually different for her, so she
- 5:10Speaker 1: has to adjust and figure out how to do that.
- 5:13Speaker 1: She is loving the process. This is illustrated through a
- 5:18Speaker 1: little scene with David where he's kind of defiant to
- 5:21Speaker 1: Christine because Christine doesn't want him to climb over a
- 5:25Speaker 1: very rickety fence, plastic fence which looks like it's going
- 5:27Speaker 1: to fall down, and she doesn't want her grandkids to
- 5:30Speaker 1: see that it's possible to do that, and so she's
- 5:32Speaker 1: telling David, who's going to go climb the fence to
- 5:35Speaker 1: go get something on the other side. She's telling him
- 5:37Speaker 1: not to do that, but it's not in David's nature
- 5:40Speaker 1: to not do what he wants to do, and so
- 5:42Speaker 1: he does it anyway. And Christine again is not used
- 5:45Speaker 1: to this because up to this point, everybody's just done
- 5:48Speaker 1: what Christine has said. But David is his own man,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and he shows up in this relationship in his own way,
- 5:55Speaker 1: and so this was a demonstration of that he's his
- 5:57Speaker 1: own person, meeting her where she is undred percent and
- 6:00Speaker 1: her one hundred percent, and this is a new union
- 6:03Speaker 1: for Christine and we love to see her in it.
- 6:06Speaker 1: The second scene was with Mary, and she's at the
- 6:09Speaker 1: Haunted B and B with Jen. They've had their final
- 6:11Speaker 1: guests at the B and B, which is interesting, and
- 6:15Speaker 1: Mary is currently kind of creating a new vision for
- 6:19Speaker 1: the space. She wants it to not necessarily be like
- 6:23Speaker 1: a B and B, but rather a small events space
- 6:26Speaker 1: where people can have little shindigs, and she's going to
- 6:29Speaker 1: have a professional kitchen and things like that, and so
- 6:32Speaker 1: she's excited about that she's able to bring out her
- 6:37Speaker 1: Lizzie's heritage in tablecloth or something. I don't know if
- 6:41Speaker 1: she's just happy about this new chapter. And she's also
- 6:44Speaker 1: talking about what she's looking forward to in her dating life,
- 6:48Speaker 1: and she references having potentially met some folks out on
- 6:53Speaker 1: the dating scene who were a little put off by
- 6:56Speaker 1: her past. I guess specifically with regard to polygamy, but
- 6:59Speaker 1: also with regard to her fame and her public notoriety,
- 7:03Speaker 1: which is the problem I think that happened with AMOS.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I think so many of the audience members started to
- 7:10Speaker 1: get involved and really curious about AMOS and started posting
- 7:14Speaker 1: about it and interfering with their relationship, which may have
- 7:18Speaker 1: been the thing that's split them apart. And so she
- 7:21Speaker 1: very in a roundabout way addresses this. But what Mary
- 7:24Speaker 1: wants is to find a meet. She wants to find
- 7:26Speaker 1: a man. She wants to do what she wants to
- 7:28Speaker 1: do in the B and B, and she wants to
- 7:29Speaker 1: live her life, and we love this for her. And
- 7:31Speaker 1: then we get this scene of Mary on the couch
- 7:34Speaker 1: and she's being interviewed, presumably about all of this stuff
- 7:37Speaker 1: that's going on in her life right now, and she
- 7:40Speaker 1: gets a phone call from Cody and she's like, Cody's
- 7:44Speaker 1: calling me. She ignores it, and she ignores it because
- 7:47Speaker 1: she's like, I don't want to talk to Cody. But
- 7:49Speaker 1: then he calls right back.
- 7:50Speaker 2: She ignores it again.
- 7:52Speaker 1: She does text him, says, I presume something like I'm
- 7:56Speaker 1: in the middle of stuff, like I'm recording, we're doing interviews,
- 7:59Speaker 1: and then he texts her right back and says it's
- 8:01Speaker 1: an emergency, so she calls him. And some people might
- 8:07Speaker 1: say it's advantageous that we get to see the actual
- 8:09Speaker 1: moment when she hears that it's on camera, like I
- 8:12Speaker 1: don't necessarily see it that way, but like we do
- 8:15Speaker 1: happen to see the moment when Mary hears the news
- 8:18Speaker 1: from Cody that Garrison has passed and that he has
- 8:23Speaker 1: killed himself, and you can see it on Mary's face.
- 8:29Speaker 1: It's this earthquake vibrational energy moment where you hear that
- 8:33Speaker 1: kind of news and she excuses herself, and then we
- 8:39Speaker 1: kind of go through scene after seeing of the various people,
- 8:44Speaker 1: including some of the kids, and how they react to
- 8:47Speaker 1: this news.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yeah, and this is why I didn't really like Mary
- 8:51Speaker 2: and Christine's segments in this, because Mary's segment was filmed
- 8:55Speaker 2: after all of this had happened. Because you can tell,
- 8:58Speaker 2: like Mary's thinner, she looks nice, and.
- 9:01Speaker 1: It's definitely Mary's segment at the B and B.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Yes, it's she's completely different looking than the segment that
- 9:09Speaker 2: we have just after that, which is Mary getting the
- 9:11Speaker 2: call that Garrison has passed away. And so I'm just like, Okay,
- 9:15Speaker 2: this is kind of cobbled together, but like whatever. And
- 9:17Speaker 2: when we go through everyone's initial reactions to this horrible,
- 9:24Speaker 2: tragic loss, like everybody has like quite normal reactions, Like
- 9:28Speaker 2: we have Mary who's visibly emotional, which we don't really
- 9:31Speaker 2: see her cry very often. We don't see her really
- 9:34Speaker 2: let her walls down. She's always very guarded and everything,
- 9:39Speaker 2: and so it was interesting to me to see her
- 9:41Speaker 2: get emotional, and I actually appreciated that. I wish Mary
- 9:45Speaker 2: would be more vulnerable. And then we have Christine obviously
- 9:49Speaker 2: visibly upset. I mean, she was one of the main
- 9:52Speaker 2: like mothers, like she was homeschooling all of these kids,
- 9:55Speaker 2: very involved in Garrison in all of the kids' lives.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Not that Mary wasn't, but you know what I mean.
- 10:00Speaker 2: And then we have Janelle visibly upset and wrecked because
- 10:05Speaker 2: this is her child, her biological child. And then we
- 10:08Speaker 2: have scenes with Gabe, which I was very surprised that
- 10:12Speaker 2: we included Gabe in all of this because Gabe was
- 10:14Speaker 2: the one that found Garrison's body, and you can just
- 10:18Speaker 2: see in his eyes that he is forever changed. And
- 10:23Speaker 2: then we have a scene with like Maddie and Caleb
- 10:25Speaker 2: where she's talking about how the thing that has changed
- 10:29Speaker 2: her brain chemistry or would change your brain chemistry as
- 10:32Speaker 2: a person, is being a sibling and having to call
- 10:34Speaker 2: all of your other siblings and give the news that
- 10:37Speaker 2: one of your siblings has passed away. And I felt
- 10:39Speaker 2: that that was like very poignant that we have her scene.
- 10:42Speaker 2: And then we show Gabe like he's visibly changed his brain,
- 10:46Speaker 2: talk about brain chemistry being changed, seeing his brother dead
- 10:51Speaker 2: and finding him and kind of talking about it, and
- 10:55Speaker 2: I just, man, it was really emotional. It was really heavy.
- 11:00Speaker 1: It was and I was taking notes for this episode,
- 11:03Speaker 1: and I was just like, I don't really know what
- 11:07Speaker 1: to write down, because I just think we should talk
- 11:12Speaker 1: about some of the main themes that they discussed. Obviously
- 11:17Speaker 1: the huge impact to the family, and you know, we
- 11:23Speaker 1: did see Gabe. I think seeing Gabe was very emotional
- 11:27Speaker 1: for me, just because he's such a tenderhearted young man
- 11:32Speaker 1: and I think he was in particular very close with Garrison.
- 11:35Speaker 1: They had a unique bond, and so it was really
- 11:40Speaker 1: sweet and heartbreaking to have him talking about Garrison and
- 11:45Speaker 1: how Garrison was so empathetic and that he felt things
- 11:48Speaker 1: so deeply, and that he was also somebody who brought
- 11:51Speaker 1: peace into a situation and just made people feel good
- 11:53Speaker 1: about themselves. And I think he says something like, you know,
- 11:56Speaker 1: that's a real gentleman or something like that, that's the
- 11:59Speaker 1: mark of a real job. And you know, then we
- 12:02Speaker 1: have Christine talking about Garrison and hearing the news and
- 12:09Speaker 1: just some of the memories of Garrison. We see pictures
- 12:13Speaker 1: of him like playing with fire or not playing with fire.
- 12:15Speaker 1: But he loved to build fires, and he loved to
- 12:17Speaker 1: be out in the stars, and he loved to travel,
- 12:21Speaker 1: and he loved his family, you know, and he loved
- 12:23Speaker 1: these things in his life. We have Janelle also talking
- 12:28Speaker 1: very directly and frankly, which I appreciated, about Garrison's struggle
- 12:33Speaker 1: with alcohol, yes, and revealing something that we did not know,
- 12:37Speaker 1: which is that Garrison struggled also with anxiety and depression
- 12:44Speaker 1: and that I guess during COVID things got pretty acute.
- 12:48Speaker 1: And we know that during COVID like this is when
- 12:51Speaker 1: the family truly started to come apart, and so I'm
- 12:55Speaker 1: sure that affected Garrison in a certain kind of way.
- 12:58Speaker 1: And so he started in COVID to drink a little
- 13:01Speaker 1: bit more then he maybe should. And Janelle describes it
- 13:05Speaker 1: as he he would binge from time to time with
- 13:09Speaker 1: alcohol when he was trying to cope. And so on
- 13:11Speaker 1: the night that this happened, he was drinking. Maybe he
- 13:16Speaker 1: was binging, but he had been talking with Janelle. Ye.
- 13:19Speaker 1: It sounds like they talked a lot, you know, multiple
- 13:22Speaker 1: times a day. And Janelle's in contact with her kids.
- 13:24Speaker 1: She's talking to Maddie multiple times a day, like she
- 13:27Speaker 1: is really involved in that way, And so she had
- 13:30Speaker 1: been talking to him and he sounded like he wasn't
- 13:32Speaker 1: doing that well. It appears that everybody in the family
- 13:37Speaker 1: that cared. I don't know if I should say it
- 13:40Speaker 1: that way, but that was proactive in the relationships, is
- 13:43Speaker 1: what I mean. But everyone in the family, he was proactive,
- 13:46Speaker 1: knew that Garrison was in a season of struggle in
- 13:49Speaker 1: his life. So, you know, Janelle mentioned to Gabe and
- 13:53Speaker 1: to Hunter, hey, can you check on Garrison, Like would
- 13:56Speaker 1: you call him? Would you just let me know that
- 13:58Speaker 1: he's okay. She goes to bed that night and then
- 14:01Speaker 1: she gets the call from Gabe that he went over
- 14:04Speaker 1: there to check on Garrison and found him to be deceased.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and apparently this drinking habit that Garrison had found
- 14:14Speaker 2: himself in was something where like he would have a
- 14:16Speaker 2: binge night and he might he would have gone ghost
- 14:20Speaker 2: a little bit, but then he would always like respond later,
- 14:23Speaker 2: like a few hours later when he may be sobered
- 14:25Speaker 2: up or in the morning or whatever. And so Janelle
- 14:28Speaker 2: recounts this as like, you know, I thought that he
- 14:30Speaker 2: would pull himself out of it. I thought that he
- 14:32Speaker 2: would be okay, and like we have a scene with
- 14:35Speaker 2: Christine where I mean, I pretty much the whole family
- 14:38Speaker 2: like knew Garrison was struggling, and knew Garrison was sad,
- 14:42Speaker 2: and that they gave him all of the support and
- 14:44Speaker 2: love that they could, and they wanted to be there
- 14:48Speaker 2: for him, and they all kind of thought that he
- 14:51Speaker 2: would pull out of it, or that he would get better,
- 14:55Speaker 2: or that maybe he would stop drinking. And then the
- 14:58Speaker 2: night that this happened, it was a complete and utter shock,
- 15:02Speaker 2: just like it was for all of us normies outside
- 15:04Speaker 2: of the family, you know that didn't know him personally
- 15:08Speaker 2: but watched him grow up on TV. Like, it was
- 15:10Speaker 2: a complete and utter shock. So it was interesting to
- 15:13Speaker 2: me to have them talk so frankly about this and
- 15:16Speaker 2: to shed more light onto the struggles that Garrison was having,
- 15:21Speaker 2: because when all of this happened last year, like a
- 15:24Speaker 2: lot of us were like, oh my god, Like I
- 15:26Speaker 2: had no idea because we didn't we didn't know. Why
- 15:29Speaker 2: would we, you know, why would we know what's going
- 15:31Speaker 2: on in somebody's internal, you know, space. But it just
- 15:38Speaker 2: made me really sad for Garrison and made me really
- 15:40Speaker 2: sad for his struggles and like alcohol is one of
- 15:43Speaker 2: those things that I mean, they call it a spirit
- 15:45Speaker 2: for a reason, like it can kind of take over you.
- 15:48Speaker 2: And it's just really unfortunate that all of this happened
- 15:52Speaker 2: and took Garrison from this world and from his family
- 15:57Speaker 2: and everything. And I don't I want to be very
- 16:01Speaker 2: careful with what I say during the rest of this episode,
- 16:04Speaker 2: because I don't want to put any kind of blame
- 16:06Speaker 2: on anyone in the family for Garrison's suicide. But I
- 16:12Speaker 2: had some issues with how Cody and Robin were reacting
- 16:16Speaker 2: to it, okay, because we have interstitials with Robin and
- 16:21Speaker 2: Cody talking about when they found out about Garrison's passing,
- 16:24Speaker 2: and in my opinion, I felt like Robin's were particularly insincere.
- 16:29Speaker 2: I don't think she I don't want to say she
- 16:32Speaker 2: didn't care, but like I just didn't see any tears,
- 16:35Speaker 2: you know, it's Robin Brown, Like we never really see
- 16:37Speaker 2: her cry. There were moments where I thought Cody was sincere,
- 16:41Speaker 2: and I mean, this is his son that he lost,
- 16:43Speaker 2: and he's like talking about how when he found out,
- 16:47Speaker 2: he was just in complete and utter shock, and he
- 16:51Speaker 2: talks about like going to the funeral home and like
- 16:54Speaker 2: just saying sorry, over and over again, like everybody in
- 16:56Speaker 2: the family, I guess, or like everybody around him, just
- 16:59Speaker 2: constantly saying I'm sorry. And I guess he was even
- 17:02Speaker 2: consoling some of his kids. Apparently it's what he said.
- 17:05Speaker 2: He was calling some of his children and consoling them.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Gwendolen came over.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Gwendolen, who was very troubled by this, as anybody would be.
- 17:13Speaker 2: And uh, Cody recounts like when he had like a
- 17:17Speaker 2: moment to himself, I guess, or like in his room,
- 17:20Speaker 2: and he the weight of this actually sat on him,
- 17:23Speaker 2: like he just wailed and was devastated. And I felt
- 17:28Speaker 2: that I felt like that was sincere. I feel like
- 17:30Speaker 2: any parent, no matter how flawed, would feel the devastating
- 17:35Speaker 2: loss of like losing their child. But near the end,
- 17:39Speaker 2: when he starts talking about his pilgrimage to bring Garrison's
- 17:43Speaker 2: body back to Wyoming, I just felt like it was
- 17:45Speaker 2: it was turning back into him and his wants and
- 17:49Speaker 2: his desires instead of reflecting on Garrison's life and reflecting
- 17:55Speaker 2: on how he wasn't really around allegedly the last few
- 18:02Speaker 2: years for Garrison. I don't know, what did you think
- 18:04Speaker 2: about it?
- 18:05Speaker 1: Well, I'd like to offer a counterpoint concerning Robin, because
- 18:11Speaker 1: I think at this point that Robin is very conscious
- 18:16Speaker 1: of any tear that she might cry, because she knows
- 18:18Speaker 1: that everybody watches and looks for the tears, and so
- 18:23Speaker 1: I would imagine she's probably even got some anxiety about
- 18:26Speaker 1: the level of emotion that she is able to demonstrate,
- 18:30Speaker 1: you know, And so I think she's so guarded. I
- 18:33Speaker 1: felt that she, like in her interstitials on the couch,
- 18:36Speaker 1: I felt that she was really buttoned up, almost as
- 18:39Speaker 1: if she was intimidated to be her actual self. But
- 18:42Speaker 1: that didn't mean to me that she wasn't feeling something.
- 18:44Speaker 1: I think she was. She doesn't feel safe. I hate
- 18:47Speaker 1: to say that, but she doesn't feel safe to show
- 18:50Speaker 1: the scope in the scale of what she's actually going
- 18:52Speaker 1: through in her process, because she'll be ridiculed for it.
- 18:54Speaker 1: People will pick it apart, people will call it disingenuous,
- 18:58Speaker 1: and so I can see how she would be appear
- 19:01Speaker 1: more cold in that way, Okay, So I just want
- 19:03Speaker 1: to offer that as a counterpoint. Secondarily, I thought when
- 19:06Speaker 1: she was talking with Cody out by the fire outside
- 19:11Speaker 1: of the mcmaonsion that she was probably more indicative of
- 19:16Speaker 1: who she is in this relationship, just like holding space
- 19:20Speaker 1: for Cody, witnessing what Cody was going through, and just
- 19:25Speaker 1: kind of being a help meet or a friend to him.
- 19:28Speaker 1: I didn't mind Robin here. I would have loved to
- 19:32Speaker 1: see more from Robins, as I did from Mary, and
- 19:37Speaker 1: as I did from Janelle and from Christine. But she's
- 19:40Speaker 1: just not that kind of person. And that could be
- 19:42Speaker 1: because she's got something going on psychologically, you know, like
- 19:45Speaker 1: a pathology of some or she just didn't know how
- 19:48Speaker 1: to do that. As it concerns Cody, I I was
- 19:54Speaker 1: surprised at the things that he admitted to I imagined
- 19:58Speaker 1: him at the funeral home, apologizing to his children that
- 20:02Speaker 1: were there. It sounds like that was a moment in
- 20:06Speaker 1: which he was confronted with what he has done and
- 20:11Speaker 1: this is the result of some of that behavior. And
- 20:14Speaker 1: I'm sorry I'm writing the lightning of blame. I'm just
- 20:17Speaker 1: I'm talking about what he said though, right he's apologizing
- 20:20Speaker 1: and as he's sitting out there with Robin and talking
- 20:23Speaker 1: about all of the moments he never had and the
- 20:27Speaker 1: what ifs and how people are like, don't get caught
- 20:30Speaker 1: up in the what ifs, and he's like, no, I
- 20:31Speaker 1: need to sit in the what ifs. I need to
- 20:33Speaker 1: think about these things because my maybe I'm giving him
- 20:37Speaker 1: a little bit too much grace here, but like he's
- 20:39Speaker 1: sounds like he's saying, my behavior led to the absence
- 20:42Speaker 1: of all these different experiences I could have had with Garrison.
- 20:46Speaker 1: And he even references COVID and how you know, all
- 20:50Speaker 1: of the problems and fighting that happened around COVID are
- 20:53Speaker 1: so unimportant, and these are the reflections of someone who
- 20:57Speaker 1: has just tragically lost somebody. These are the things that
- 21:00Speaker 1: you literally do think about. And it felt to me
- 21:03Speaker 1: that to the degree that he could, he was trying
- 21:06Speaker 1: to sit with the ownership of his part in that.
- 21:10Speaker 1: It felt to me that that, like and notice I said,
- 21:13Speaker 1: to the degree that he can right right, I do
- 21:16Speaker 1: think that he doesn't have the capacity for that compared
- 21:20Speaker 1: to the rest of us or or a lot of
- 21:22Speaker 1: other people. But like for him, it felt like he
- 21:24Speaker 1: was in the process of that. And I'm sure he's
- 21:27Speaker 1: probably also very conscious to the cameras and how many
- 21:30Speaker 1: people hate him out here in these streets, but I
- 21:33Speaker 1: don't know. I felt like he was actually he actually
- 21:36Speaker 1: I saw like an actual person that I didn't hate yeah,
- 21:41Speaker 1: a dad who lost his child. And when he was
- 21:44Speaker 1: talking about taking Garrison home to Wyoming, like I felt
- 21:46Speaker 1: that though, and yet it did become about his pilgrimage,
- 21:49Speaker 1: and it did become about him and his process. But
- 21:54Speaker 1: we're the ones left behind and we have to figure
- 21:56Speaker 1: out that process. So there's something very legitimate and valid
- 21:58Speaker 1: about that as well.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Yeah, And like that was my thing with Cody is that,
- 22:02Speaker 2: like I didn't hate him as much in this episode,
- 22:06Speaker 2: and I thought that for the most part, his feelings
- 22:09Speaker 2: were like genuine, and I don't want to. I also
- 22:12Speaker 2: don't want to like pick apart people's grief processes because
- 22:15Speaker 2: I think everybody grieves differently. And like with your point
- 22:18Speaker 2: about Robin, you know, maybe you are right with her
- 22:21Speaker 2: being buttoned up, but to me, it didn't feel like
- 22:25Speaker 2: she was coming off cold because she was guarding herself.
- 22:30Speaker 2: To me, it felt like she was still trying to
- 22:34Speaker 2: portray some level of emotion to us to make us
- 22:36Speaker 2: think that she cared more than she did. And that's
- 22:40Speaker 2: kind of like my perspective on it. And like maybe
- 22:43Speaker 2: I'm bitter because I don't like Robin, and I will
- 22:45Speaker 2: cop to that, and like maybe I'm perceiving her reactions
- 22:49Speaker 2: to be colder than what they actually are. And again,
- 22:51Speaker 2: I don't want to like shit on people's grieving processes,
- 22:54Speaker 2: because you know, not everybody cries, Not everybody expresses their
- 23:00Speaker 2: their grief in a very open way. Sometimes it's always
- 23:03Speaker 2: just behind closed doors, like nobody will see you cry,
- 23:06Speaker 2: nobody will see you express this kind of stuff. With Cody,
- 23:11Speaker 2: the thing that bothered me really was at the end
- 23:13Speaker 2: when he was talking about the pilgrimage, because it became
- 23:16Speaker 2: more about what he wanted. And this is the only
- 23:19Speaker 2: thing that I wanted is just to bring my kid home.
- 23:21Speaker 2: But I understand the sentiment with it, because he talked
- 23:25Speaker 2: about the importance of bringing him home where they had
- 23:27Speaker 2: family buried out there, and I think that that's completely
- 23:31Speaker 2: fair and valid, and like of course he would want
- 23:33Speaker 2: to bring his kid home. And I found the sentiment
- 23:36Speaker 2: of that, And to your point about to the degree
- 23:39Speaker 2: of Cody, what Cody can express of like his acknowledgment
- 23:44Speaker 2: for his behavior or his regret for how things happened.
- 23:51Speaker 2: I could see like a glimmer of that in him
- 23:54Speaker 2: when he was talking about like what could have been
- 23:57Speaker 2: and he thought that he had more time like I
- 23:59Speaker 2: really felt that, like maybe we're giving him a lot
- 24:03Speaker 2: of grace here too, Like maybe he feels like they
- 24:07Speaker 2: could have worked things out eventually, like they could have
- 24:10Speaker 2: had more time that they would and they would, and
- 24:12Speaker 2: then now he doesn't, And he talked about that like
- 24:15Speaker 2: there's no resolution, there's no reconciliation, like I don't get
- 24:19Speaker 2: to say goodbye, And I think like underneath all of
- 24:22Speaker 2: that is him being like I didn't even get to
- 24:24Speaker 2: like say sorry, and I didn't even really get to
- 24:27Speaker 2: communicate to him that I cared and that I love him.
- 24:30Speaker 2: And I think Cody deep down loves his kids, but
- 24:34Speaker 2: he is a he's a broken man, and he doesn't
- 24:36Speaker 2: know how to initiate those relationships with his kids or
- 24:41Speaker 2: like or not initiate, but what's the word maintain? He
- 24:45Speaker 2: doesn't really know how to like reach out and nurture, yes,
- 24:51Speaker 2: and be the bigger person and like be the mature
- 24:53Speaker 2: parent in these kinds of situations, like he lets his
- 24:56Speaker 2: petty grievances around the wives dictate his relationships with his kids.
- 25:00Speaker 2: And you know, no parent is perfect. I'm sure we
- 25:04Speaker 2: all can relate to that. We all come from our
- 25:07Speaker 2: various backgrounds and stuff, and so I can have compassion
- 25:09Speaker 2: for him for that, and I don't want to be
- 25:11Speaker 2: too critical because he did just lose his kid, and
- 25:14Speaker 2: I do believe that that rocked him. And we do
- 25:16Speaker 2: even have a scene where he's in his workroom and
- 25:19Speaker 2: you see this giant photo of Garrison like right in
- 25:22Speaker 2: front of there in his workroom, and people on Reddit
- 25:24Speaker 2: actually have sleuthed and that scene was most likely filmed
- 25:28Speaker 2: in their new mcmanche oh. Really based on the view
- 25:32Speaker 2: from the window and everything, it's a different scene. His
- 25:35Speaker 2: hair is also thinner, so you can tell that it's
- 25:37Speaker 2: like a newer scene.
- 25:38Speaker 1: I didn't not feel about that, why because I don't
- 25:44Speaker 1: know if this is the episode to talk about it.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Did you feel like it was performative kind of?
- 25:51Speaker 1: I'm like, Okay, well, I don't want to say it.
- 25:54Speaker 1: I'll say it at another time. I wondered about it.
- 25:57Speaker 1: But at the same time, especially if they're in their
- 26:00Speaker 1: new house and he's going through the process of grieving,
- 26:03Speaker 1: like this is what he wants to connect with and
- 26:05Speaker 1: this is how he does it, It's almost like an
- 26:07Speaker 1: alter of sorts. So I mean, I'm just going to
- 26:09Speaker 1: leave it there and maybe the later time I feel
- 26:11Speaker 1: more comfortable to talk more openly about that, But I
- 26:16Speaker 1: felt for him as a parent. Yeah, and no parent
- 26:19Speaker 1: wants to ever have to deal with that, of course not.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And then we pan over to Janelle, who is in
- 26:24Speaker 1: North Carolina visiting with her sister.
- 26:26Speaker 2: This part got me. This is what made me cry.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Carrie. Was that her name, who looks a lot like her. Yeah,
- 26:33Speaker 1: And they're in the kitchen, and it's sometime in the summer,
- 26:38Speaker 1: right after he passed, because they're talking about Savannah going
- 26:41Speaker 1: to school in August or something, or somebody's going to
- 26:43Speaker 1: do something in August. I forget. So it's pretty fresh
- 26:47Speaker 1: and it's pretty new, and so her sister is there visiting.
- 26:50Speaker 1: And I just really related to Janelle in this because
- 26:54Speaker 1: I'm a lot like her emotionally, like how I regulate emotionally,
- 26:57Speaker 1: like as soon as it kind of comes up, I like,
- 26:59Speaker 1: take a moment, and I don't wanted to come up.
- 27:00Speaker 1: I don't want to show that to anybody. I feel
- 27:02Speaker 1: very vulnerable expressing my emotions in that way. So I
- 27:08Speaker 1: just really could feel how much she was struggling. She's
- 27:12Speaker 1: talking a lot about how important it is for her
- 27:14Speaker 1: to stay busy and it's good that she's in North
- 27:16Speaker 1: Carolina because her grandbaby's sit there and they've got the
- 27:18Speaker 1: new farm, and they've got all these things that are
- 27:20Speaker 1: going on, and she's got a new vision and she
- 27:21Speaker 1: can work on that and in doing so doesn't have
- 27:25Speaker 1: to focus and even fixate on Garrison, who she says,
- 27:28Speaker 1: like sometimes she forgets that he's even dead, you know,
- 27:31Speaker 1: like he'll she'll be living her life as if he's not,
- 27:33Speaker 1: and then like come into the clarity of the epiphany
- 27:36Speaker 1: that oh he is dead, and like that's a shock
- 27:39Speaker 1: in that moment, like, oh my god, he's dead. Like
- 27:41Speaker 1: I can't I can imagine because I've lived through similar things.
- 27:44Speaker 1: But I really felt her in these scenes and with
- 27:49Speaker 1: her talking in her interstitials just about everything. I just
- 27:53Speaker 1: wanted to give her such a big hug. And I
- 27:55Speaker 1: feel like as much as we laugh and as much
- 27:57Speaker 1: as we take the piss out of these people, as
- 27:59Speaker 1: much we get in their ass about stuff, like, at
- 28:02Speaker 1: the end of the day, we are all connected because
- 28:06Speaker 1: we care. A lot of us really actually do care,
- 28:08Speaker 1: and a lot of us are mad because we care,
- 28:10Speaker 1: you know, and a lot of us are are here
- 28:13Speaker 1: just because we still care. So I care about Janelle. Yeah,
- 28:16Speaker 1: And I care about Christine and Marryan, and I care
- 28:19Speaker 1: also about Cody. Yeah, I care about all of them.
- 28:23Speaker 2: It's like I care about Robin.
- 28:24Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, I don't like I care about
- 28:27Speaker 1: the kids.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Yeah. It's like I would care more about Robin if
- 28:29Speaker 2: she was more authentic and if she wasn't like always
- 28:32Speaker 2: lying in every.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Single I care about Robin's impact on the family.
- 28:35Speaker 2: Right, Yes, I care about that. And the scene with
- 28:38Speaker 2: Janelle and her sister was just like so oh so
- 28:42Speaker 2: sad to me because it's just like it's the silent
- 28:46Speaker 2: acknowledgment that they're both feeling the loss, like they both
- 28:51Speaker 2: like tear up at a particular point, and like Janelle's
- 28:54Speaker 2: like just doing her best to keep it together and
- 28:57Speaker 2: like keep it together on camera, and even for her
- 28:59Speaker 2: sister because you know, she's having a hard time like
- 29:03Speaker 2: being emotional, and she talks about like having to stay
- 29:06Speaker 2: busy so that way she doesn't feel it. And I
- 29:08Speaker 2: feel like a lot of us can relate to that.
- 29:10Speaker 2: Like I'm like that too, Like I'm a pretty expressive person,
- 29:14Speaker 2: but when it's like really hard emotions like that, I'm
- 29:18Speaker 2: like that. I'm like I just have to keep busy
- 29:19Speaker 2: because I don't want to. I don't want to feel
- 29:22Speaker 2: it right now. I don't want to deal with it.
- 29:23Speaker 2: So that scene was really hard emotionally for me, and
- 29:28Speaker 2: just like I just felt them all. It was just
- 29:30Speaker 2: really sad and I Then we had like a scene
- 29:33Speaker 2: I don't remember what part it was at, but where
- 29:36Speaker 2: Mary talked about when she got the news, she like
- 29:39Speaker 2: immediately called up Janelle and was like, I'm coming over,
- 29:43Speaker 2: I'm bringing food and I'm coming over. And that part
- 29:45Speaker 2: got to me too. I'm like, man for all of
- 29:49Speaker 2: Mary and Janelle's struggles, like with their relationship and how
- 29:53Speaker 2: like Mary has been mean in the past, like she
- 29:56Speaker 2: comes through for Janelle in this moment and is like
- 29:59Speaker 2: their for her and just being supportive because this was
- 30:02Speaker 2: her kid too, this was Christine's kid too, and it
- 30:05Speaker 2: was just I don't know. After twenty three episodes of
- 30:09Speaker 2: this season, I'm glad that we like finally talked about it.
- 30:14Speaker 2: I'm glad we finally talked about Garrison. I'm glad that
- 30:17Speaker 2: we got to see some like real emotion from the
- 30:20Speaker 2: family because it just reminds all of us that they're
- 30:24Speaker 2: real people. Yeah, And like even though they make fools
- 30:27Speaker 2: out of themselves on TV all the fucking time. They're
- 30:30Speaker 2: real people, and we all can relate to losing somebody
- 30:33Speaker 2: that's important. We not everybody has an experience with suicide
- 30:38Speaker 2: or a family member who has committed suicide, but like,
- 30:40Speaker 2: we all know what it's like to lose somebody who
- 30:43Speaker 2: means a lot to us. And so this was just
- 30:46Speaker 2: a really heavy episode.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Yeah, it was just a really heavy episode. Yep. Sorry,
- 30:53Speaker 1: I know, yeah, you know. On a personal note, my
- 30:58Speaker 1: husband's father admitted suicide in twenty at the end of
- 31:04Speaker 1: twenty twenty. Yep, and the same way that Garrison did.
- 31:09Speaker 1: He's a Vietnam veteran and he had, you know, his
- 31:12Speaker 1: struggles and issues. But like that phone call that Mary
- 31:17Speaker 1: got is like the phone call that my husband got,
- 31:21Speaker 1: and just like the waves of energy over her face
- 31:24Speaker 1: and just like, yes, the shock of that moment. But
- 31:27Speaker 1: it doesn't even have to be suicide. It's just the
- 31:31Speaker 1: loss of somebody that you deeply, deeply love. And even
- 31:35Speaker 1: in the healthiest of relationships, when you lose somebody that
- 31:37Speaker 1: you love, you always wonder like, oh God, could I
- 31:40Speaker 1: have shown them love more? Could I have made more time,
- 31:43Speaker 1: or if I just took those calls.
- 31:44Speaker 2: You know.
- 31:44Speaker 1: It's just like all of the things you beat yourself
- 31:46Speaker 1: up over when when they're gone, it's just like, that's
- 31:49Speaker 1: how that's why it was important to do this. That's
- 31:53Speaker 1: why I wish they would have done it a bit
- 31:56Speaker 1: different ly, Yeah, so that we could have really had
- 31:59Speaker 1: a moment of celeb of Garrison and also just a
- 32:02Speaker 1: kind of a sacred space for us all to just
- 32:04Speaker 1: feel that together wherever we are and relate it back
- 32:07Speaker 1: to ourselves and also connected back to them. I just
- 32:10Speaker 1: wish that it had been produced in a different way,
- 32:12Speaker 1: But nonetheless I am grateful that we got what we
- 32:16Speaker 1: got and that beloved young man, I mean, just such
- 32:19Speaker 1: a good young man. And there's so many people in
- 32:21Speaker 1: the world and you really just don't know what people
- 32:24Speaker 1: are going through, and just even especially these folks on television.
- 32:29Speaker 1: I remember, like when the vander Pump scandival was happening,
- 32:31Speaker 1: I'm just like, yeah, what Tom Sandival did was terrible,
- 32:35Speaker 1: but like, I'm very worried about this person right now.
- 32:38Speaker 1: And some of this it's intense on social media and
- 32:42Speaker 1: like what people do and what people say, and like
- 32:45Speaker 1: you just go up on Mary's Instagram right now when
- 32:48Speaker 1: she posts, and just the people like comment after comment,
- 32:51Speaker 1: just being mean and dragging them, and it's just like
- 32:53Speaker 1: it's pretty terrible. Yeah, and so I definitely I felt
- 32:59Speaker 1: this episode. I just feel like we should leave it
- 33:01Speaker 1: right there, Like there's a lot of other things that
- 33:03Speaker 1: we could pick apart and say and like a question,
- 33:05Speaker 1: but like why it's not appropriate? Not right now, it's
- 33:08Speaker 1: it's not appropriate, and so we don't want to do that,
- 33:10Speaker 1: and we want to be respectful. And I realize we're
- 33:14Speaker 1: very disrespectful generally all.
- 33:16Speaker 2: The time here.
- 33:16Speaker 1: We've heard it, but we're real people. I'm a mom,
- 33:18Speaker 1: you're a daughter. You've lost folks in your family. I've
- 33:21Speaker 1: lost folks in my family. You've probably lost folks in
- 33:24Speaker 1: your family. And it's tough no matter what. Yeah, So
- 33:27Speaker 1: is there anything else that we should say to these
- 33:29Speaker 1: beautiful raccoons before we get up on out of here? Beatrice?
